Reviews (page 6 of 14)

Bem calmo, pq eh jazz né, as faixas são bem longas, porém sao bem interessantes, achei legal até, para o jazz, que não é um gênero que eu sou mto fã pois conheço pouco, enfim. 8/10

Another really good Miles Davis. I feel like maybe I was undercutting jazz in this early days of this project because I’m sort of surprised how low I’ve rated some iconic albums (besides Bitches Brew, that was… A LOT). In general there hasn’t been any jazz I’ve hated, it’s just not my genre. This was great, though, as Miles always is.

Badap da bap daba doo bap!

I'm so happy I liked a lot this album. I had to listen to 'Birth of the Cool' before, and, while I liked it, I wasn't crazy about it and I was afraid of feeling the same way for any other Miles Davis' work. However, this record demonstrated to be a whole different beast. It goes for a more relaxed, calm and moody sound with a very controlled pace and some chilling melodies, which is basically the opposite direction of the ideas in 'Birth of the Cool'. Instead of being energetic, the album focuses on creating a quite unique dreamy and soothing atmosphere, and it works fantastically. But I always end the album feeling there's more about it. Like there's still a lot to unpack from the record, and that's why it has being growing on. I've heard the album so many times and I yet feel like I don't know it. It truly is mesmerizing. I'll give it 4 stars at the moment, but I do believe it has the potential to become one of my favourite records ever in the future.

Second song in the album was bluish

Really great album clearly paving the way for ideas that come out in Bitches Brew. Or not. What do I know?

This can definitely go into the rotation for albums to listen to when I really want to focus on something else, or just relax and zone out. I'd give it 5 stars but I don't think it is impacting me personally as a musician, that's kind of my line, I am just not that jazzy. Would love to know more about the process of making this record. There is such cool stuff in here.

One of my go-to albums whenever I have a wee jazz phase. Very satisfying when that great bassline finally comes in. Way better than Kind of Blue.

This was so nice. I love long songs and I never heard these before. I'll listen to this again

Nothing like a 2 song album (3 if you count Shhh / Peaceful as 2 songs). Pleasant listen, no flaws. I liked the second half a bit more than the first.

Why is Miles Davis so wonderful? 4

4/5 Actually quite enjoyed. First song much more upbeat than the second, but I prefer the second, "in a silent way" 8.25/10

Bah c'est hyper

My expectations were low for two 20 mins songs but this was pretty great

22 albums in and this is the first really interesting new discovery. Never been more than a passing fan of Davis so haven’t gone in on any of his “electric” work. This is clearly brilliant. It needs more listens than I’ve had time to give it, and I’ll definitely be coming back to it in future. I expect the 4 is very likely to become a 5 over time.

30/09/2025 Long, but not bad. Very much like elevator music. Spotify listeners: 2.9 million

My new favorite album for late-night driving.

Very atmospheric. Dreamy, meditative vibe. I enjoyed the restraint and haziness throughout this LP. The usage of rock instrumentation makes this very accessible for jazz, imo. Trumpet, saxophone, keyboard all interplay with refreshing restraint—I prefer this to the bombastic explosiveness of other Davis records. The texture always has something interesting going on. I thought the cuts in the tracks were weird, and a little jarring. But I liked how the music kept evolving and taking me to new places. Miles and Co. exploring how far you can go musically without ever actually leaving the same chord—mesmerizing. Glad to hear this one on an early fall morning today. 7.5-8/10

I like jazz

Struggled to make sense of this. In some parts it sounds like what I’d imagine experimental hold music for a discount golf store would sound like. Then I start questioning whether I’m kind of down for a bit of experimental hold music for a discount golf store. I’ve concluded it may just be my jam.

I might like jazz? There's a flow to this that's so hard to describe it's basically zen. The music just washes over you like its always been there.

I played this a couple of notches too loud on a rainy Friday with the lights in my office dimmed and the part that brought me joy was students raising their voice to talk to me and then me whispering my nonsensical answers back to them while sipping my coffee. Jokes on them, I took an edible before work and my answer was always gonna be nonsense.

I enjoyed this, great musicianship

Soothing, hypnotic sound that follows a continuous tone almost ambient-like. The guitar-driven bluesy tones were the most fascinating point for me. A bit monotonous at some points, but overall worth listening.

Pretty cool and chill, didn't blow me away but I enjoyed it.

Cool to see him incorporate some more modern sounds but it doesn't quite reach the heights of Kind of Blue

Masterful, elemental.

Haven’t heard this one before. Great two tracks that pair perfectly with a gummy.

Legendary. 4.5* My expectation was obviously not the design for this album. I just want some more improv.

Incredible musicianship but not really my thing

It's Miles Davis.

Tentative 4: need to re-listen in a better environment, where I can lend it more scrutiny.

-very nice listen, the drum work throughout the entire album is extremely solid keeps it all together -i feel asthough this album need to be a bit long - some more variety is needed -amazing listen for when youre working or doing something else that has your attention - the end part of the last songs is very nice

Need to spend more time with this.

I like to read and work to this. It's calm without bordering on sleepy or elevatory. 8/10

First song was good second was great

Not my favourite type of Jazz but still very good.

chill jazz. only 2 tracks

Peaceful night drives

Sometimes challenging but thoroughly enjoyable listen

Nothing much to say, just extremely enjoyable.

Classic jazz album. Miles was on the cusp of change to a more modern way of playing jazz. Great stuff

THAT's the Miles Davis I like to listen to. My trumpet playing son's recommendation.

A classic. Nice.

Although not one of my personal greatests by the greatest, it still holds up as being great

Pas mon préféré, mais je comprends l'importance historique (tournant électrique/fusion) Le groove de bass de in a silent way est bon.

Excellent album! I particularly enjoyed the title track. 8/10

Magical. Ethereal, with just a little edge.

Lofi for my parents

Almost felt like a math rock album dressed up as jazz. Really really liked it.

In A Silent Way is an interesting answer to a question I had: How did we get from stuff like Sketches Of Spain and Sorcerer to Bitches Brew. In A Silent Way is a slightly earlier foray into the kind of more experimental fusion sound that Miles Davis would explore more later. I guess this was pretty controversial at the time, which is kinda odd to me. Like I get that this strays away from more traditional forms of jazz, but I don't hear anything really alienating either. This is honestly one of the best jazz albums I've gotten through this so far. Shhh/Peaceful is tethered to a pretty stable percussion line and features really expressionistic splashed of sax and keys and other instruments. And the title track is a *little* less beholden to a percussion line, so it comes across to me as slightly airier, but a lot of the same elements are in place. This album showcases a more abstract mode of jazz songwriting which really puts Davis and his ensemble's ability to improvise at the forefront. The chemistry on here is second to none, and that tracks: the personnel here are an endless parade of soon to be established '70s jazz genius. At the end of the day this is just such an enjoyable listen for me. And while I do think this isn't Davis' best work in this style, it is still very much it's own, extremely valuable piece of art.

Very good, very groovy

тем кто ставит 1-2 - хватит пиздеть, просто ощутите вайб.

yeah this was pretty cool

Shh/Peaceful: more upbeat, rock, funky In a silent way: more eerie, fluid, airy, dark

Beautiful

Very interesting, easy listening. Enjoyed. Felt like a very well written piece of classical music in that it elicited lots of emotion. Sanguine.

In A Silent Way will be my final Miles Davis album to review. My most recent album of his to review was Bitches Brew, which I listened to in January, and pretty much hated. His other two albums got four stars from me, and I had high hopes for Bitches Brew, but I found it to be a complete slog to get through. Jazz music is a big blind spot for me, but I'm hoping that Miles Davis will go out with a bang on this one. I can’t say that I understood this album, or that it really tracked with me, but it was pleasant to listen to, and I think it’s safe to say that this is the closest I’ve gotten to ‘getting it’ when it comes to jazz music. I enjoyed the piano and organ playing on both sides of this album, and I liked how each of the two songs had their own unique movements that still fit together with the song as a whole. I thought the music was really well arranged too, and even though I enjoyed the piano and organ parts best, it never felt like any particular instrument was trying to wrest away control from the ensemble. I liked the second side of the album a bit more than the first, just because it felt a bit more unique. I’d be down to listen to this album again, and I think it’d be something worth owning a physical copy of.

Very relaxing

This makes #3 of 4 for Miles Davis albums in this collection, and while that might be a bit much for one artist, I'm really glad it was included. I've never heard anything from it, so it's all new to me, and I enjoyed it from beginning to end. I can see why everybody freaked out about how to classify it, as it doesn't really fit into any particular genre, and I'm not sure it really led the way for other artists to follow, but it holds up really well. Miles Davis seems to have been able to collect really great band members for his albums, and the interplay of Chick Corea's and Herbie Hancock's keyboards was a highlight for me of the first side of the album, as was the Davis and the guitarist on the second side. It's funny to see that this album was listed next to the Bee Gees' "Odessa" in the "1001 Albums" book--I can't think of a bigger contrast in terms of sound and sophistication.

I’ve enjoyed all of the fusion albums by Miles Davis but somehow I had never heard this one. Considering it is his first journey into the fusion world, I loved it! I’m a fan of cool jazz, but most other jazz can get a little repetitive if not seen live. I’ve never felt that way about fusion jazz, especially the way Miles uses such a wide variety of instruments and electronic elements.

Short one, but good. Some stressful bits, but very varied listening experience. Felt like ocean waves doing their thing.

For those who are about to rock: skip this album. But if you are into to musically baldly go where no one has gone before: fasten your seatbelts, but not too tight, close your eyes and let miles and his fellow musicians take you to free flow fusion wonderland…

So chill. So so chill. I prefer Coltrane for my jazz tastes, but this is one of Miles' best. Can't help but think that a lot of the instrumental bits remind me of Pink Floyd and/or The Doors (?) I enjoyed this one a lot more than I thought I might, going into it. It will be in my rotation going forward.

Fantastic listen, would listen again. I love the movements of each piece, and the addition of the jingling and jangling electric guitar and keys really highlight the brass when it comes in. Overall, love that this was Miles going electric, and it works. Shows that he and the band he put together could really make some fantastic music. Can really see its impact on funk and R&B that is set to come in the 70s. I can really see some of this influences in Frank Zappa's fusion (Waka/Jawaka)and some of the music of Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye.

If peeing your pants makes you cool, then consider me Miles Davis

A calm and relaxing Jazz album 4/5

Excelente captura en vivo del gran maestro.

As a deadhead, I can hear Miles’s influence on Jerry throughout this album. It’s like I listened to a 38 minute Dark Star. It’s almost comforting in a way that I didn’t know jazz was capable of.

I know very little Miles Davis, and this sort of album is an interesting introduction. My favorite track (of the two on the album) is by far is the title track.

7/10 This was an interesting album. The playing is obviously first class, Miles Davis doesn’t pick any slouches, but while the playing is great, and the sound is also a really interesting step away from his more traditional jazz sound of previous albums, there are areas where things just don’t get moving quite enough for me. There are lulls, which is fine, but those lulls can drag on a little too long. There also isn’t quite enough variation in the rhythm section for me, particularly in the first track. The overall feel does feel like a stepping stone from the old style to the shorter-form more rock style structure of some of the jazz fusion artists, like Weather Report and Mahavishnu Orchestra that would follow. I can really see why the trad jazz heads would have had issues with the album. There are couple of quite glaring edits in there, which detracts a little from the flow, but overall, I think this is a really important step for Miles Davis and was a really decent effort. It’s kind of weird in that it probably rewards close listening, but also background listening, but not so much the sort of half-listenening that I suspect a lot of us do while doing something else. Shhh / Peaceful - This is good stuff. The rhythm section provides a consistent bed that gives momentum to the piece (although you’d be bored as hell being those players, because they don’t really diverge much over the 18 minutes), while the keys, guitar and organ just dance around each other in little bursts and flourishes, lending and taking back phrases and ideas from each other. Miles and Wayne Shorter both take their turns and, while their presence is relatively fleeting, they deliver some really subtle but delightful playing over the top. It could do with a bit more rhythmic variety for me, but it feels like a really chilled out jam where everyone’s having a great time. In A Silent Way - This is multiple tracks in reality. It has one movement that begins and ends the piece, with another in the middle. The opening and closing are almost a pre-cursor to ambient. They sort of drift around and flow without ever really landing anywhere over a droning bass tone. And then after four and a half minutes of ambient prep, the thrust of the track kicks in. It’s definitely got that fusion edge. It comes and goes and everyone gets their turn at the forefront of the sound. It’s definitely still got more of that traditional free-form flow from more traditional jazz, but some of the motifs and tones really hint at some of the fusion sound that would follow, particularly with Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter’s future band, Weather Report.

The sound of a new Miles Davis being born — very, very quietly. Miles goes electric. Causes controversy. Eventually hailed a masterpiece. All true. This isn’t jazz to tap your foot to — it’s jazz to lose yourself inside of. In a Silent Way ebbs and flows and the host himself invites you in, sits you down to indulge his world. Long, hypnotic movements. Trumpet lines barely there — more like a signal from somewhere far off. Electric piano, ambient textures, and the birth of something new. It floats, it breathes, it waits. This is a turning point in jazz and a gentle revolution.

Good stuff. Enjoyable. Don't really know how to rate it. Sounded nice while I got work done

Bardzo przyjemne. Może długo szeptać dzwięki do uszka.

Great jazz (fusion) album. Even though it's just 2 pretty long tracks, it works very well. It's an easy listen, can serve pretty well as background music, but if you pay attention it's very rewarding, the way they move around and explore Davis' compositions is so interesting. The band here is a mythical lineup, they're all amazing musicians and they all bring their best. I loved Davis' trumpet playing and the electric piano as well.

Good, nice vibe.

Man just lovely

This is one I absolutely need to revisit at some point in my life. It took me a while to fully integrate myself into the album but as I listened to the reprise of the main theme at the end of In a Silent Way, it somehow all came together. An absolute journey through sound, with Miles at the front and an absolute unit of a group behind him (including both Hancock and Corea, who led their very own successful fusion groups). I’m thrown between a 4 and 5 because I listened to it broken up and I think I need to listen to it straight though, but Miles is an innovator and this is certainly an innovation of the direction of his music. Gonna settle on a 4 because this is truly unlike what I’m used to with Miles, which is more Birth of the Cool and Kind of Blue

Don't got a ton to say about this, it's just some damn good jazz. Not quite the vibe I look for in jazz, I tend to like jazz that gives me suits, cocktails, and dinner vibes and this is more straight live music setting for me with it's more fusion/almost-verging-on-funk style, but yeah. Can't really explain it better than that. Second song, In A Silent Way is more the vibe I like. I was always more of a Coltrane fan though, to be honest, but Miles is fantastic.

Miles Davis and his mathematical mind. Some of the smartest math people I know love this music. Shh, just listen.

I haven't gotten to this period in Miles career but loved this. Miles tone is beautiful and the other musicians are great

Absolutely beautiful album

Excelent album, synths and jazz

Magical, but you got to be in the right headspace to appreciate it.

I think this would be utterly mesmerising to witness live and I feel the need to go to a dark room and just let this wash over me. It felt like an effortless flow of music and while I am not necessarily a jazz fan I could appreciate this and the talent on show here. Not quite a 5 for me but maybe that’s more a reflection on my tastes than the musical quality. A superb way to spend some time and I’ll be a repeat customer (maybe then at least in spirit I’ll be increasing my rating).

Loved it

Loved this. Such a good vibe - smooth, easy to listen to. The second track on this felt like a few tracks amalgamated into one but the journey was still great. Would absolutely listen to this again.

I dig. It's not often in up for jazz, but when I do, Miles definitely hits the spot. 4/5 #110

I'm not a jazz guy but I like this one.

While not as good as "Kind of Blue", this is still a great album for sitting and chilling. Musicianship is on point.

Feels a pretty boss move to have an album of two tracks. The length of songs really allows easing into it as a journey, the continuation, themes and a pleasurable listening experience, which feels vastly different to 12 4 minute tracks. Just feels a really seamless, organic journey through so many layers and phases. Reminds me a bit of psychedelic trip music and could see it being powerful with that too. Just all feels so easy, smooth and effortless (listener and players). Listened straight through again after finishing first time. Definitely a different type of album to usual, but I like that.

The first half of this didn’t do it for me but the second song, the in a silent way, so so so so good. It made me go back and listen to the first track again and I got it then. Just such good work of rhythmic layering and meter and just like mastery of technical songwriting. It’s not a 5 for me but it’s a great 4.

This took some patience. I didn't really get into this until the second section of In A Silent Way. Once the drummer kicked into a groove, it kinda opened the whole album up and gave me a better appreciation of the other parts of this. I swear I've heard the trumpet lick at around the 14 minute mark before, but I can't place it. The final section was so much more satisfying after having that crescendo. I'm not a jazz guy, but I'm interested to see how Davis's next couple records are. I like the direction. I'm feeling a light 4/5

Some good background music, but IDK if I would listen to it again

(7/10)

never listened to miles davis before. i only know him cause of that tom cruise movie collateral. but i understand it

Damn, that trumpet. I like it.

Great music to listen to while working. Dude had a wild life after goggling him.

A classic. So inventive and still feels so fresh and innovative

yes, it is not the beatles. and i strongly recommend you to listen to it while playing action games, such as dead cells. cause when i was listening to this, i used it as background music for playing dead cells, and its literally the coolest action in the world. 4.5/5

Off the cuff remark: I really like Miles Davis, particularly "Kind of Blue" and "Conceptions", but at the same time I am often left feeling jazz is a bit 'superior' and there's large elements I just don't 'get'?? This is, perhaps, a tiny bit more noodly than I would normally like but right time, right place.... Standout Track: hmmm Shhh (Reprise), maybe? Revisit?: Engaging, will be revisting when the mood takes me

In a nutshell: electrified. Jazz critics: what the hell is this? This isn't jazz! There's no electric instruments in jazz! Rock music critics: It's not jazz, but it's not quite rock, but I think I dig it. Steely Dan: hold our drinks. Me: Miles and his band went electric? Let's see what it's like... *40 minutes later* okay, I'm sold. The boundary pushing, genre shaping, artist defining albums is what I'm here for. This is a masterpiece, a classic for sure. I rarely say 'the other c word' in reviews, but this is warranted. Overall: 8/10

As someone who dislikes 95% of jazz, this is in that small percentage that I do enjoy. I really appreciated that it doesn’t have any instrument where it sounds like the player is having a stroke, which is my biggest complaint of jazz. This is mellow and moody with enough song structure and melody to keep my interest.

Feels like one continuous piece of music and while its emotional scope is not limited it never gets boring. Beautiful toe in the electric sound ocean by Miles.

Possibly the first jazz fusion record? You gotta be in a certain mood for this one.

The first song feels like a very long prelude to a great song, but we never get there. I like what the guitar, piano, drums, and bass are doing it's just that it goes on for quite a while and doesn't quite become the exciting song the instruments are teasing. Almost seems like a jam rather than an actual recording of a song. The guitar work at the beginning of the second song is beautiful. Moving into the meat of the song feels good too. They pick up the pace a bit and it becomes more lively. The second song's pacing is nice too, I like the backing rhythms chugging along waiting waiting for the right moment for Miles Davis and the drums to come in and play more excited. Starting and ending with the same guitar was lovely. The context in which you hear it changes between the first and the second and although it's the same melody it feels different, and I think that is an amazing thing to achieve in music.

Very cool--hadn't heard this one before, first track feels like long stretches of the same chord, sometimes the keyboard sounds like someone randomly banging on it, I'm sure it's some kind of extended chord? Good stuff.

perfect to study to again shout-out eliasje

Peaceful, pleasant Jazz

second track is 5/5

I listened to this as I did data analysis and time flew

Solid, like all Miles Davis.

It helped me focus on work. Feeling very productive. Nice.

I liked this better than Birth of the Cool. Still not sure if my opinion on jazz is worth anything or maybe it’s growing on me but I actually found myself enjoying this instead of just wondering what was happening. The second half in particular was more my speed. Going with a 4 to differentiate from my previous 3 rating ad I definitely enjoyed this more.

With it being a time that jazz hadn’t really brought electronic instruments into the genre yet, I can see how people might have been apprehensive with this album. But Miles Davis brought the heat and merged them together well. Great for some evening listening to wind down to. Would listen to again.

Had a hard time rating this but decided to approach it like an auditory landscape painting. He's creating different soundscapes for you to step into. Not my favorite style but he does it best.

Great album. One of the first Miles Davis CDs I ever bought.

Brilliance from Davis, the ambient and smooth vibes are excellent. They couldn't pick a better album for me to study to. The way he composed it, so sweet. Loved it!

Get it Miles

Two songs, 38 minutes total

that production was kinda vibey!

This album was a great listen and matched perfectly with the landscape of the day - mellow, rainy, but birds are chirping and there is a cool breeze. The moments of piano being the focal point musically were my favorite. I enjoyed the calm tempo across the album. Sometimes jazz can feel very rushed and anxious to me, but this all felt thoughtful and calm.

Miles Davis plays the trumpet

Fucking amazing! I loved it

Lovely background music. Doesn't do as much for me as I imagine it should. Guess I don't get Jazz as much as I thought.

oooooh so good.., oooooh those cats cooking oooooh miles my love

Not my favorite Miles album, but good none the less.

Great moody fusion of jazz with electric/rock instruments. Standouts: Only 2 tracks, both long and enjoyable

7/10…jazz fusion

Last Mile Davis album was a surprise to me, loved the smooth jazz so excited for this one! Really chill vibes, long meditative calm.

I'm not an expert when it comes to jazz, but I enjoyed it. For a track titled 'shh/peaceful' I did find it pretty non-peaceful though as there was a lot happening. Definitely an album worth re-listening to.

I liked it. Very interesting since I've heard a lot of music that must have been pretty directly influenced from this album. Jamming over one chord for 15 minutes is only something this incredible lineup of musicians could pull off.

Very long but interesting

I don't know much about jazz or jazz fusion, but this sounded pretty different from what I expected for that genre, in a good way though! I like it, this is the first time jazz "clicked" for me. I liked the first track better than the second, because the second one fizzled out a little to early for me, but overall enjoyable!

Everything I like about Bitch's Brew, with none of the other stuff.

Cool, dark, and immersive. More than 50 years after recording, it still sounds cutting edge.

Pretty good smooth jazz album. Would recommend.

Great album, I really enjoy the instrumental albums as it allows for a deeper study of the instrumentation. Overall enjoyed side one “Shh / Peacefull” the most as it is really a great mix of instruments and much more upbeat. The keyboards and drums are perfection on this track. Side two “In a Silent Way” was slow and that disappointed me a bit but it does pick up in the middle, which I enjoyed, it ends again as slowly as it started which makes a perfect close to the album.

I remember the first time I heard this album how blown away I was by the guitar tone. It seems less important or notable now than I remember it then. I think in a lot of ways this album also benefits from being pre straightforward than bitch’s brew, which I heard first and which made this seems a lot more focused and accessible. I still think it’s great, regardless of my first time listens.

I liked this. Wasn't prepared to hear long songs again but it was nice. I hear instruments repeating themselves like the bass and it doesn't stop. I think it keeps a tension of the song that is mysterious. When things finally do change it feels like a journey has been reached. The repeating instruments come back and back again and it feels like a never ending cycle. Although this happens, this gives the other instruments room to experiment and breathe in their own sound. Jazz is cool.

I really enjoyed it because this is the kind of music I actively seek out, something that is calming and well made. I loved the opening track. The album felt very well thought out and arranged.

I liked it, but I thought it was a little disjointed in the middle. I listened to it a couple of times and felt there weren't any standout moments but it was consistently enjoyable and interesting.

What a wonderful way to end this 1001 albums challenge - it was exactly what I was hoping for. I need to listen to more Miles Davis cause he's fab. 4 stars.

Favorite Track: In a Silent Way

40 days in and finally a jazz album. Really good album. So different than all his earlier recordings. While I prefer the hard-bop style, it’s tough to say I don’t like this. It was a ground-breaking jazz sound in 1969 and I love risky, game changing albums that are 5-6 years ahead of everyone else. Good listen.

This was great. Definitely I want to come back to it

Quite nice— has a nice vibe to it.

Suprotno očekivanjima, vrlo prijatan album čak i za nekog ko ne podnosi jazz. Dosta eksperimentalno, inovativno, drugačije. Podržavam što se nalazi na listi.

I really enjoy miles Davis vibes but I gotta say I preferred birth of the cool to this album. But he is certainly an amazing musician still, I know that. This was just a little more chill and on the side of “elevator music .” This is something that has a right place and a right time but it doesn’t really hold attention by itself. I enjoyed it but I also might fall asleep to it. And idk how bad of a thing that is or not so

Avoided listening to this until I was in the right mood for jazz. Really enjoyed gardening to it.

I'm not here to say this is his best album, but I love the vibes on this. Plus it's rare to have such a guitar-heavy album by Miles Davis so this feels like a treat. 4/5

I definitely enjoyed this one, but I’m still not very confident in my ability to discuss jazz. I know Miles Davis is a jazz legend, but beyond that I couldn’t tell you much about his career. This was pleasant to listen to, made for great background music while I was working, I will most likely listen to it again.

Enjoyable and fun as hell to listen to.

Listened to this on a walk, and had a jazzy, dreamy soundtrack. It does just kinda keep going on, no real breaks but not exhausting just hard to latch onto something other than album as a whole. Would totally listen to again and enjoy.

Ya like jazz?

To me this sounds a bit like the incredible "A Love Supreme" by John Coltrane, a similar gradual slow burning brilliant collection of music. This one is of course different, slightly more modern, but it has the same rolling onward and sometimes meditative vibe. I feel like the 16th note hi-hats and "i'm taking some big steps" bass lines really just pick you up and drive you around town on a beautiful day. I like a lot of things with this album and it feels so impressively serene and comforting which is apt for the titles. The only thing that would make it a 5/5 for me is if it it would have a few more climactic moments. The guitar solos are really killer and do all the right things, but I can't help but feel like I wanted just a little bit more of some kind of explosion after all of that building. I'm sure there's some dynamic constraints in play here, but that's why it's a little short of a 5 for me.

A really nice listen on a really lousy Monday morning.

My god this is a beautiful album. Have been listening to a lot of Miles Davis recently. The guitar intro of in a silent way is just beautiful. Innovative but still so classic sounding. Fabulous. Structurally so bizarre but the chords on the organ are beautiful. Have to get more familiar with this one

Love a bit of Miles.

4 - great fusion jazz

2 tracks, 40 minutes long, this is a great album to do practically anything while listening to. 4/5

Good album in a four stars way. Album does kinda sound like it restarts itself every 6 minutes or so throughout. Nonetheless, good album in a four stars way. Some very good silently moody playing by Chick Corea and John McLaughlin. Good album in a four stars way.

Favorite Track: Shh/Peaceful

Really pretty jazz-rock fusion album that is just two tracks, all instrumental.

Nice but a bit background music. Wouldn't have it on a run!

I’m not a jazz guy, but these are some good musicians

quizá de los últimos Albums qué sostenían una gran melodia por varios minutos, un genio

I preferred the back half. First half was groovy fast paced jazz. The second half was dark and atmospheric, like a precursor to ambient music.

Cool concept, experimental and improved like bitches brew but more put together. Pretty cool but not not as ground breaking as bitches brew or put together as Kind of Blue

There's nobody like Miles. As George Wein once said, Miles wasn't ahead of his time, he was the time. This is such a wonderful step between the second great quintet era and the fusion era.

If youre more of an instrumental rather than lyrics person then I would lisent to this album, I like it even tho I prefer songs with lyrics but I like the jazz I would lisent to this while I study or bake in the kitchen. I recommend this album.

I rate shhhhhhh peaceful a 3 star because there are no lyrics and I like jazz so Its for me but not really. I rate in a silent way a 4 star because its calming and its relaxeing and the gutire is really good

I thought "Shh! Peaceful" was good. I liked the instrumental music even without the lyrics. "In a silent way" was also great because it very delicate and nice. It's actually good without the lyrics. I recommend this album

No lyrics necessary

Listened several times this weekend.

v chill

Nice album, not his best 4/5

Lovely vibe, very palatable jazz. Beginner friendly. Listening in the wake of trying to listen to Bitches Brew and losing my mind lol.

A breath of fresh air. I've tried to understand A Kind of Blue, but I connect far more with In A Silent Way speaks. Will need to give it a few more listens - there is so much going on.

Jazz Great solos

Delightful, but honestly too short. I could listen to that for hours.

In A Silent Way doesn’t ask for your attention, it grabs it, slowly and effortlessly. This isn’t jazz that swings, pops, or even really moves in the way you expect. Instead, it floats, unravelling time until you forget where one note ends and the next begins. The electric pianos hum like streetlights flickering to life in the dusk, the guitar drifts in and out, and Miles well his trumpet slipping through the mix like the wind blowing gently around you. It’s so delicate that you almost don’t realize how much tension is lurking underneath, like the calm before something either beautiful or a storm happens, and you’re just waiting to see which way the clouds are blowing. This is jazz stripped down to its very bare essence. Space, mood, and the art of not saying too much. Miles is practically daring you to slow down, to stop expecting anything, and just exist inside the music. It’s the sound of a band listening as much as playing, every note hovering on the edge of something bigger. And just when you think you’re about to drift off into some blissful, weightless oblivion, the whole thing fades out—like it was never really there to begin with. Maybe it wasn’t. Maybe I just imagined the whole thing.

3.8 5x

So peaceful, I think the theme which he tries to make works completely. Nothing alike kind of blue but not for the worse. I need to listen more times, and the score could get higher but for now.. Favourite songs: both (obviously). Overall around 8/10

Would be nice to have more distinct sounds on a Davis album on this list (Looking at you Kind of Blue), but still decent.

I love Miles Davis’ trumpet playing of this type. Although it is relaxing there are many passages with tempo, which is also great - this is just the kind of jazz I love. I am dreading, though, the day when I have to listen to Bitches Brew, which is definitely not my taste

for some reason this took like 4 attempts listening to get through it but i really enjoyed it

I need to listen to this intriguing thing more but there's something here I think. Probably? Jazz is weird even when it's not jazz.

9/10 Miles’ first step into Fusion music is well regarded in retrospect similar to someone like Bob Dylan’s Bringing It All Back Home, and while it is a huge departure from his “traditional” work, being much more palatable for mainstream audiences who have begun embracing Rock music. The first side of this record is stagnant, with various isolated performances coming in and out of the mix pristinely playing along to a groove, and while it still has a lot in common with traditional Modal Jazz structures there’s various surprises and experiments that make these 20 minutes feel ominous. Continuing this ominous feeling for another 20 minutes is the other side of the record, this time with a surreal atmosphere, combining Ambient music with Rock, Funk, and Jazz in an incredibly smooth but elusive way, it makes sense why this album pushed some people away at first but it didn’t take long for them to really understand where Miles was headed. In a Silent Way works extremely well as a mysterious and hypnotizing soundtrack for the Manhattan streets at night, but it’s also an exciting teaser for what’s to come in Miles Davis’ career. Cool Jazz more like Drool Jazz! *Drives away in my 1984 Honda Elite*

Electric jazz fusion from Miles Davis. I've couple of his albums that were more traditional jazz ("Kind of Blue", "Sketches of Spain") but also had listened to "Bitches Brew" (released after "In a Silent Way" and also jazz fusion) so this was definitely an interesting listen. His talent as a trumpeter and as a band leader shines in what is his first true electric jazz fusion album after a hard turn in genres, according to Wikipedia. I'm a big jazz fan and this album was no exception.

Awesome possum. Dim lights and nice company. I understand why he is held in high regard. If I found this on vinyl for a decent price I would pick it up.

You finally got me Miles, I quite enjoyed this.

it’s Miles, what do you expect?

Excellent jazz album, especially if you're fine with electric in jazz 👌.

Smooth- really really enjoyed this album. Ups and downs. I heard it was the start of his crazier era.

Love Miles Davis but I'm not the biggest fan of +8min Jazz songs which low-key could be separated songs with transitions. I love progressive rock songs etc. but this album is most likely only listenable when not the whole album get listened streaming wise. But on wax its just a simple Side A and Side B which is cool. Kind of blue still my fav! (3.5/5.0)

Ich bin mir immer unsicher bei Miles Davis. Dem letzten Album hab ich 5 Sterne gegeben, die kann ich hier nicht geben. Das zweite Lied hat mir besser als das erste gefallen.

I've always wanted to listen to Miles Davis, but never jumped in. This is me jumping in. It's really good.

Space age jazz, or perhaps just call it music. At times it is almost like a sound track. It sounds very late sixties and I like that - It could easily be incidental music for something like Mission Impossible. And this album is certainly more accessible than the following Bitches Brew.

I quite like jazz and this was nice, vaguely-on-in-the-background, music.

Solid 4, don’t love jazz but doesn’t get much better

listened to again another banger

First time listening to Miles Davis, really enjoyed it !!!!!!! Funky groovy melancholic cool shit

Hmmm hmmm hmmm, ça c’est du Jazz qui coule tout seul

Calm, cool and collected. What a journey this record takes the listener on, through upbeat rhythms to more docile and relaxed, ethereal tones. What a wonderful and experimental jazz record from the legend himself.

actually really good when doing more mindless things, like puzzling or cooking and just needing noise or drawing put surrounding noise. only 2 songs, but each song felt like several complete journeys. good album overall actually and will likely listen again in the future :)

liked songs: both This is the kind of music you just have to exist in. There's so much going on that it would be impossible to identify everything in the first listen. The layers of guitar flowing in and out of keyboards, relatively simple basslines, and relatively unorganized solos evoke a sense of floating. The use of discord and harmony is so well done, preventing total resolution at any point. This is a master of his craft surrounded by top-tier talent. Miles Davis is an all-time great trumpet player and band leader, and an even better composer. 4.25

way more digestible than Mingus because more predictable

Very groovy indeed. I felt like I was in the middle of a long Doors instrumental break for much of it, which is not a bad place to be. Quite transporting.

Good jazz. A little slow for my taste

While I am obviously no expert, it feels as though there is no note out of place in this exposition. Wonderfully crafted, and truly beautiful music. My ignorance for jazz music makes me feel like I can't properly appreciate this, but nonetheless. Love Miles Davis. Still think he has some better albums in comparison. Best Song: Shh/Peaceful Rating: 8.0/10 4 Stars

This, for me, is like watching a Kurosawa movie in original Japanese. I realize it is brilliant, I recognize the pure genious of the art but I can't understand it. I wish I could since this is probably some of the greatest music ever made. That said, even though I feel I can't truly appreciate what I am listning to, it puts me in a mood and I find it pulls me back in. How awesome is that?

Breathtaking. 4.5.

I have seen this album cover before. Never heard these two tracks. This is solid. Reminds me of Jimi Hendrix with the improv and jamming and guitar solos.

Solid stuff. Really like that each song is just one side of a record

Very chill, loved the drumming

This and Birth of Cool are by far in a way his best....

This is a great and classic jazz record, despite being a transitional album between Davis's Cool Jazz and Jazz Fusion periods. I don't have much else to say here other than I wish there was more jazz on the list. Key tracks: Shhh/Peaceful

A whole vibe. Proto-Bitches Brew, a little more groovy and accessible than that one.

Greta background music

Pretty great to have on in the background. It's interesting and inventive and easy to listen to.

Had never heard before. Was shocked to see just two songs, but they were long. Really nice mood and tonality. Parts reminded me of The Doors (The End) and bits of Atom Heart Mother.

Ethereal sessions of jazz. The guitar work adds an interesting dimension to it. 4.5*

Never thought I was a jazz man but here we are

What a great listen. Only two pieces but they each move in so many directions. You can feel the anguish and disparate realities of 1969 permeate. But the drums, particularly the hi-hats, give them a forward momentum in spite of all they're up against. A glimmer of light through the clouds. Miles Davis at his best.

I really enjoyed this. I know next to nothing about jazz but this was great. Initially I was intimidated with in being 38 minutes with only 2 tracks, but it flew by and I enjoyed every second if it.

That's not my taste in musik. But interesting music. Great musician.

Ok, wasn't differentiating between songs

I really liked this! I preferred the second track to the first, although I'm not sure if I'd listen to it again in the future, as I'm not a fan of super long songs.

Virkelig godt musik at have i baggrunden på arbejde. Kunne lidt bedre lide Kind of Blue men generelt er Miles arkiveret under COOL CAT hos mig

Better than expected experience.

Difficult not to compare to his next, superior, album Bitches Brew, In A Silent Way is a gentle introduction to jazz fusion. It doesn't quite get there for me, and as blasphemous as it might be, I found John McLaughlin's guitar to be downright clunky at times.

Miles fully commits to jazz fusion on In A Silent Way - only to later perfect it on Bitches Brew.

经典,豪庭啊

the trumpet was trumpeting

Stellar line up of musicians. You can really hear what Jazz Fusion was about to become and how the next decade was gonna look.

Chill jazz.

Another classic album by Miles Davis. While I enjoyed listening to this, it did not have the same overwhelming and inspiring feeling of his Kind of Blue album.

When I want Jazz, Mike's is in the mix. I like the album.

Hard to pinpoint, but an engrossing listen. As there are only two pieces around 20 minutes each, the build ups are quite rewarding - when that bassline kicks in at the 14 minute mark on the title track, or in Shhh/peaceful, when after pounding a closed hi-hat for around 9 minutes the drummer releases the pressure a bit and we get a single snare drum hit (I do not fully realize whether that was irony or not.)

Very solid entry

Nice Jazz music. One reminded me of Ella

Presenting Miles as the musician of subtlety and restraint.

A jazz album that's not too long and doesn't get boring. Made in the same year as many other classics. Some jazz records can be monotonous after a few minutes. But Davis avoided that as there's many instruments on "In a Silent Way". In other words, I liked this album. 4 stars for "In a Silent Way".

10/24/24 first time listening!

4.5 Kinda weird but I can appreciate that given its year. Also really beautiful. Big fan!

Cooooool Jazz man.

4 estrelas fácil. Miles sempre esteve milhas à frente.

The last Miles Davis we got was Birth of the Cool. Here he is 20 years later showing he's can take the two chord jams of psych rock into a new kind of cool. appreciated. (⌐■_■)

This guy sorta knew his way around a song eh

Not perfect but really good.. added

Beautiful.

It seems like I've been getting a lot of jazz lately . This album was a little different in that it only had two, rather lengthy songs. It hit me like good jazz is supposed to.

A perfect set of tracks for walking around empty city roads late at night in autumn.

I don't know if I'm really qualified to review this. I like it better than most jazz, but it's also more rock-like than most jazz. The middle section of "In A Silent Way" is basically two long stretches of them just hanging on a riff. It's got more in common with "Band of Gypsies" than with Duke Ellington. But it's cool, it's really cool. It's got a lot of strange, strange sounds - lots of atonal stuff, wide diversity in voices (with the guitar and organ and all that added in). But then there's also very pacifying sequences with a very smooth sound. It's disorienting, in a good way. I listened to this a couple times, in part because it's short and because it's good background music for work. It definitely rewards repeat listens. There's a lot there.

I do not listen to jazz at all so I am completely unaware if this is good, bad or influential in the jazz world. What I do know is I like it. I don't listen to jazz because I don't feel like it has a flow, I feel like it is all over the place and the instruments don't really work together but do their own thing. However, for me this was totally different, worked together and made sense in coherent musical pieces. It was different because it was more electric and not just jazz band instruments, which was also cool and a different experience. It did give me the vibes of background music in an elevator or a store, but it was still enjoyable.

Okay, wasn't expecting pure instrumentals

Pretty chill

Quite pleasant to listen to 4

Smooth and always surprising. David was the bomb, baby!

Huippu. Uusiks!

Miles Davis was such a badass that he could release a record that was two tracks long. And have it be fantastic. This is a typical Davis album in terms of its moodiness and introspective feel. But it’s great and stands out a little because of the statement it makes. Two tracks, one on each side of the record. Done. He didn’t need any more than that. I don’t know what else to say, really. It’s Miles Davis. One of the best to ever do it. Four stars. Standout Tracks: both of them

This was fantastic. Even the parts that were a little more wandering, was there to build up to the next piece of each song. It was calm yet poignant and interesting. 4.5/5 Would definitely listen again

Features a cool blend of rock and jazz, where neither really feels like they're taking center stage. The musicians who played on this are an absolute murderer's row. I preferred side A to side B, but both were solid. Favorite track: "Shhh / Peaceful"

i already own this album on vinyl. this is probably what it feels like when someone reminds you that you have a really good sandwich in the fridge that you then get to indulge in

It's Miles, it's cool.

Need more in my life

Nice in the background

Not fully my type but I enjoyed it quite a lot. Nice work.

Nice Jazz album 👍👍👍

I'm not really a jazz fusion fan but this worked for me. It toes the line where I could still listen to it and enjoy it whereas something like Bitches Brew goes way over the edge and to me, is unlistenable despite multiple tries. I could see revisiting this but I would reach for several other Miles recordings before this one.

Great trip, but it requires your full attention. I had to listen to it in 3-4 different takes.

шшшшшитсокэйшшшшшшшш Лучшая песня - In A Silent Way.

ho finalmente accettato che mi piaccia il jazz. assurdo. che melanconia, che magia.

Great album, very deep and always interesting. The B1 track must have been sampled a gazillion times by the lofi squad, the whole B side is chops galore.

I liked this album, it was very nice background music. It's the kind of thing I'd put on quietly in the background of a nice house party. Not that I've ever had one of those. Jazz doesn't do anything special for me, so I didn't fall in love with this (presumably) iconic record, but I definitely like it. I don't have the developed nose for Jazz that I'd need to say anything intelligent about it here. 7/10

95% of music I listen to I'm working at my office. I put this album on three times. Each time I lost track of it and didn't tune back in until I noticed something else came on after. I can't say whether or not I was extra productive like it put me in some kind of flow state. So many albums in this 1001 project give me a guilty feeling like I'm not giving the art the context it needs to be optimally enjoyed. Like if I heard In A Silent Way in a jazz club? Ugh. Would be pure magic. But instead its coming through my Apple Studio Display speakers. Sounds good but is it even the same thing? What even is life? :P 4 stars for the jazz club daydream.

This was a really cool and varied album. I love how it ebbs and flows through. Shh/Peaceful was really fun to start with. The guitar is really fluid and flowing. What I like though is the play between the guitar and the trumpet. One minute you're locked in kind of psychy sounding guitar riff and then Miles comes in on the trumpet and kind of just takes you to a new level. Also, really cool and moving percussion. The tempos changes throughout, but the drums really keep it tight through all of their jams. In a Silent Way was really interesting. I love how it starts and ends. The ambient soulful somber tones really lock you in. The journey to the fusion jazz / rock in the center is really what captivates me. It ebbs and flows, ups and downs in tempo, pace and instruments. Then it lands you safely back home in that ambient space. I really enjoyed this!

First listen, likey. Fusion…cool. Recorded in one day. That’s one way to make a good album. Think I would like to read his Autobiography.

Jazz, 1969 -> 4

i think jazz music is pretty awesome, but unfortunately i find it very difficult to approach. less made up of songs and more just background noise, but its really good background noise

Based album.

Sottile, ipnotico, incalzante. Non lascia margine all'indifferenza e coinvolge fin dalle prime battute. Ottimo dopo una piatta giornata estiva.

Many jazz albums have flew over my head, but this certainly didn't. Though the first track dragged out for quite a while, I thought it was a nice journey and I didn't get bored. Had an interesting suspense to it, like something crooked was about to happen. The second track started off more mellow, relaxing, and peaceful. Then it ramped up and changed form. This track also took me on a nice journey. Overall really good album, nothing to complain about! Strong 4.

Nice chill jazz! Not as Iconic or catchy as "Kind of Blue" but still definitely worth a listen. Some great solos and vibes here.

Sophisticated Jazz

Wow, you know you have something special when you can release an album with two 15 min tracks. So glad we got another Miles album, and one I hadn’t heard before!

Another great one from the Great One. Only two tracks, and they're all over the place. Parts of this feel surprisingly modern, like a blend of jazz with some pop or rock elements. Really cool honestly, Miles Davis is just consistently that guy. Favorite tracks: I liked 'em both. Album art: Sort of an ominous headshot of Miles, looking....what would we say here, worried? Forlorn? It could even be a positive emotion, hopeful? Really hard to read this guy, he's an enigma. I hate that this picture reminds me of some bigger account on twitter that has this cover as their profile pic. 4.5/5
