Reviews (page 5 of 14)
Miles Davis made a lot of great albums. This is one of them. However, "Great" and "Essential" are not the same thing. Two Miles albums should the sufficient. One from his earlier, more traditional Bop era ("Kind of Blue") and one from his more challenging Fusion era ("Bitches Brew"). This is a transitional album that may be an excellent introduction for listeners unfamiliar with his Fusion projects, but occupies space on this list that should have gone to another artist. I would suggest Robert Glasper or Domi & JD Beck. Both are artists who arrived too late for the latest update to the list, but warrant at least one listen.
Its good, I like it. Dont have much to say.
Excellent (of course), but it's still jazz.
Two tracks - both great. I don't like jazz, but for some reason I like this?
The first jazz album I've really enjoyed
Álbum de jazz muito rico musicalmente. Muito legal ouvir o conjunto de instrumentos e o trompete em destaque. QoA Cloudscape.
This album is a near 5 for me. It’s one of my favorite jazz albums. The energy is unmatched and there’s certain moments throughout that really baffled me. The only thing is that I need to spend more time listening to it, but it’s really something.
Elvis Costello - 6 albums... Miles Davis... 4 albums.... jus' sayin'! 🤨 I've never proclaimed to be a big jazz guy; a friend put me onto A Kind of Blue a couple of decades ago and a mid-20s me was perhaps surprised at how much I enjoyed it at the time. I can't say it sparked a huge love in jazz in me, but I did and do still really enjoy it. Same for Bitches Brew, discovered recently; a more complex work but truly engaging, even despite it's length. So onto IASW and I'm starting to think that this guy might be pretty good at jazz! Another really engaging listen and one that people will say makes great background music but, despite me listening to this as 'background music' for my work, actually kept pulling me out of that work to concentrate on the music. That's my gauge of a good listen! Like all of Miles' work, I'm going to have to go back and give this a dedicated listen (which brave soul is going to a Discog on him?!). It deserves that and so do I!
I was worried it would just be silence due to Eno PTSD, but everything worked out
Amazing record, but not Davis’ best
I enjoyed this a lot. Will be listening again.
icon miles david. listened to this last year for jazz presentation
I really liked this. I did listen to the 30-40 min version, because 3.5 hour version felt a little much. Funny thing though, is it was the only version available on youtube music officially. I found someone else built a playlist and listened to it. When it was over, the 3 hour version started playing, and I just let it.
jamas había escuchado algo similar, esta chido
Good, though a bit lengthy, it was unusual for an album to have only two songs.
Beautiful and interesting sounds
Beautiful
This was perfect to update my resume to. Lot of cool parts to each song
Bit of a weird one for me. I don’t really like jazz, or at least I didn’t think I did, but this totally pulled me in. It’s often called the first jazz-rock fusion album, but it doesn’t sound like what I’d expect from that. There’s no big riffs or anything—just this really calm, drifting sound. Loads of electric piano, soft guitar, and everything sort of blends together instead of anyone trying to show off. The main thing I noticed was how atmospheric it is. It almost feels more like ambient music in places than jazz. It kind of just floats along.
Viel besser als "birth of the cool"
Bloody good.
What a cool fuckin album
The utilisation of electronic keyboards and guitars on this album make it a ground-breaking piece of work, and would have been a risky move forward from the more traditional jazz that Miles Davis was associated with at the time. My intrigue comes from how you can get a group of musicians to improvise their music around themes and phrases and for them not to then go off and play completely disparate passages. The album showcases a range of hugely talented musicians combining to make a wonderfully calming piece of music. 4 stars
Goodness. This is a banger.
love the snare drum action at around 13:30 in "Shh/Peaceful". what's not to like?
Beautiful mix of music that drifts between styles and vibes.
So damn good
It's groovy for sure. I like the smooth guitar. Every time I listen to a Miles Davis album I always hope for more trumpet - it's fine there isn't but for some reason my brain always wants more. In any case, it feels like you're sneaking through the house after dark trying to take the last piece of cake. It's slick and I don't dislike it at all. For jazz it's pretty legit.
Always nice to listen to good jazz. I prefer other albums by M Davis.
The first part was hard to listen to when slightly hungover, but everything else was nice. I could see this album evolving to a personal 5 for me with additional plays.
i'm sure if i were a 1969 listener, i would've been guarded about this album because it's so different from everything he's done up until now, but having the benefit of listening now means i really appreciate that davis wanted to something different *and* succeeded in that pursuit. i would be lying if i said this is a commonly rotated miles davis record for me, but i do still like it a lot, and all of his risks pay off. it's different, it stays interesting, and it keeps the spirit of jazz going. i love later pharoah sanders and some of herbie hancock's weirder stuff (emphasis on some), and you don't have either of those contributions, imo, without this album.
A little bit harder for me to stay on top of compared to Bitches Brew, but still great. 4-4.5
Interesting challenge to rate this . I mean I enjoyed it but more as background music almost. Still good jazz - but it feels weird ranking it on the same level as more recent albums. It’s an enjoyable listening experience though- calm and doesn’t go too off the rails? Love the cover art as well. Specific rating - 4.1 Fav song - in a silent way Least fav - shhh/ peaceful
An easy raining morning listen in the campervan whilst catching up on the news
Very soothing
Hymnizing
Shhh...Peaceful in a silent way .
Absolutely brilliant - 4 of the brightest stars!!!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Tom.
Miles Davis, notorious inventor of background music, does it again, innovating on a globally HATED genre of music (jazz), to make it just palatable enough for the general population of this website. This is probably the last time I look at global reviews. Read a book, damn.
lovely and listened while i read and made breakfast. instrumental and nice for background
C’était beau Je m’attendais pas à ça
Plutôt cool en bruit de fond, instrumental sympa! J'aime bien le concept d'avoir que deux pistes dans l'album c'est original
Bom, diferente do que eu esperava. Boa para relaxar
Pretty good!
Miles doesn't rank at the top of my jazz artists lists, but I do tend to like his stuff more often than not. This is no exception. 4 stars
Sick album, sheeit, brother
Not my style, too slow. But a great compositor for a picture and art inspiration
Det va fint, det kommer æ til å vende tilbake til når æ treng nokka å høre på.
Perfect soundtrack for my walk downtown leaving the office today
I think this might be the most I've ever enjoyed a Miles album. The blending of rock and jazz made it easily digestible to my uncultured ears! This was filled to the brim with atmosphere. The first song would feel like it would be right at home soundtracking a tense stakeout scene in a crime drama. Miles was inspired by the psychedelic rock movement going on at the time and you can hear that in the guitar work. This may have divided critics at the time in the same way that Bob Dylan was crucified for going electric, but this willingness to experiment shows why these guys are so timeless. I don't think we would still be talking about Miles the same way if he wasn't willing to move out on from the stuff he put out in the fifties.
I's a very relaxing album. Great music, really puts you in a flow state.
Very comforting and soothing music, really loved the guitar intro/outtro to 'In A Silent Way' Favorite song (50/50 shot): In a Silent Way
I enjoyed this album as it was excellent instrument play and did not drag on.
Very soothing and calming album. A good change of pace
after spending the morning in the dentist chair-this was fantastic to come home to & relax to. great, mellow background music. not sure where this lands on jazz/fusion, but enjoyed the sound
Maybe... Maybe Miles Davis was just the coolest dude to ever live? This is some really smooth jazz, and it's easy to see how Miles became the best to ever do it. Noticed how this also had a bunch of new "electric" sound, which seems like it was something Miles was really experimenting with at the time. It's really good.
That's Jazz
Hudba ke čtení nebo večerní konverzaci. Poslouchala jsem při ranní procházce Brnem a byl to příjemný podklad k přemýšlení
Enjoyed a lot
There are 2 songs: 18 & 20 minutes. Fusion jazz. Unstructured and includes electric guitar and Hammond organ. Once again proving Miles Davis' position as a primary trendsetter in jazz music as he breaks ground again for another genre of Jazz music. Very mellow. Pitchfork: n/a Rolling Stone: n/a
Fun and energetic, kind of playful? Don't really gravitate towards jazz out of my own volition but would enjoy it if it came up on its own!

Nice
Impresionante la música, nunca lo había escuchado. Que no te agarre triste
Not really a jazz person, but I appreciate the class of it
Tering goed. Wel jazz achtergrond
very peaceful, i enjoyed.
In a silent way
good
imagine listening to this in the morning, while it's raining outside, with a cup of coffee.
Good Mellow Stuff
two almost twenty minute adventures into a beautiful wondrous world.
8 / 10 - Jazz-Fusion - hypnotisierend, und doch groovy - monoton, und doch interessant
I don’t know jazz but I know this is very good.
8.5/10
i'm new to jazz. It was really nice and i liked it a lot. I had never seen a two song album before which caught me by surprise. Overall pretty good/10.
This is the kind of Freeform Jazz I am struggling to appreciate. No denying the playing is good.
1 - Shh/Peaceful (easily my favourite of the 2 lengthy suites that make up this album. Love the buildup in the first third and the heavy presence of the organ on this. The melody is so...patient, as though it's always waiting to find the next direction to move in while the song is playing) 4.5/5 2 In a Silent Way (follows a similar structure to the previous suite though in reverse order, going from quiet to loud where the former did the opposite. This one brings everything full circle very neatly especially after the 14 minute mark. A soft and quiet resolution offers a moment to contemplate the moods and changes the album presents) 4/5 OVERALL - 8.5/10
It’s Miles Davis, of course it’s good. Excellent easy listening while getting things done. Very classic 60s organ in “Shhh”. Without looking at the track playing I thought “Peaceful” must have been “In a Silent Way”, so the transition between the two was pretty striking. If nobody has choreographed a modern ballet to “Peaceful” or the last quarter of “In a Silent Way” then someone really ought to.
Really enjoy this classic. Songs are so interesting throughout the whole thing!
Really really really good when I could get into it. At times frustratingly dissonant (though I’m not jazz-pilled enough to really be able to appreciate it in its entirety). The titular track is incredible.
serene and relaxing, sounds highly skilled
I wouldn't have guessed that this was Miles Davis if someone played it for me. My jazz knowledge is very minimal but I like just about everything I have heard by Miles Davis -- including In A Silent Way.
9/10
This is my first album with this one. I didn't expect to be treated with experimental jazz right away, but it's fun! These long songs felt like I was swaying with them. I like how present I felt even with the lack of lyrics. Though I feel some music has a time and place to be enjoyed, atleast for me. This one, I wanted to recline and swirl a glass of wine. But I was at work getting interrupted with distractions. A welcome change. Here are my notes: - wow, these long ass songs - i feel like it's swaying with me - i can feel the breath through the instrument. i dont wanna put a name to it, it makes me feel so present - i like the lack of lyrics. i like being able to sit with this - in a silent way and it's the most music has spoken to me in a while (i also say these things because they're fun to say, they may be half-truths) - this qualifies as an album???? - it's picked up pace and carried me along - i have an imagined glass of wine that im swirling while swaying - okay, i might get a little tired of it - maybe this isn't the right manner of listening: sitting down and getting distracted by calls / messages at work - ? might be causing audio fatigue that way - in a silent way is making me mournful. - how do you review music? - it feels like a sound from just below an ocean's depth - the art is a green hue. this song is blue. - it's picked up now - do they freestyle this? or write it down? or just go with the room? is there an audience? or just a man doing his thing? - reminds me of that excerpt. of that man who thought jazz wasn't anything special, till someone played it in front of him for 16 minutes straight without opening their eyes - from that day he started loving it. - fun! i'll have to build some kind of patience for it though - it's lulling me along -
As far as jazz goes, this is it. Great way to start this 1001 albums journey. Miles Davis was gifted.
Очень хорош, на виниле если, вечером супер
Excellent for meditation and living in the moment.
Is this jazz? It doesn’t swing. It doesn’t have chord changes. There are solos but they are remarkably restrained. There is an electric guitar. Apparently all of these things were vexing to the old guard of jazz, with its various orthodoxies. Well, if it isn’t jazz, what is it? It’s ambient and meandering. In the groove that emerges on the second track, you can hear funk struggling to be born. The bassline predicts Birdland by the Weather Report. I really like this record and find it fascinating. I hadn’t heard it before, but it will enter the rotation.
In A Silent Way - Miles Davis, 1969. Es una buena música para disfrutar en un ambiente cómodo y hogareño, podía usarse para bailar al ritmo lento pero con esa melodía movida que te hace querer mover alguna parte de tu cuerpo con animo. 4.5/5
I’m absolutely miserable about talking through jazz, especially something so ephemeral as 40 minutes of pure jamming. Loved the sound, amazing vibes- can’t quite say it fully captured my attention the whole way through but I listened through it twice
Relaxing. Favorite track: In a Silent Way
Two twenty minute tracks, but really just 40 minute continuous jazz that fits well with the background.
Low-key not my favorite Miles, but everything he does is kind of perfect
Groovy baby, I enjoyed this and I didn't think I would. Four and a half stars.
Moody. I like it!
I liked it while I was just cycling to school. It was calming.
miles davis really tried pushing the boundaries between jazz and other music genres and it worked out very well. this almost sounds like an ambient experimental rock album, especialy the second half of the album. i really enjoyed it, more than i thought i would!
Fun and very listenable, but I won't really return.
Good grooves. Good tunes. 4/5
7/10
I like the concept of this album - only two tracks, it feels well thought-out and polished. 8/10
Miles Davis is a master of his craft. Compared to some of his more monumental works, In A Silent Way is a much more compact album, and I'd say a fair bit easier to listen to too.
Two amazing jazz tracks, not my favourite of his but still great solid 9/10
Loved this, great fusion record. John McLaughlin is excellent throughout the record.
It caught me by surprise to only see 2 songs on this album... then I saw the run time for each song and it made a little more sense. Very interesting to listen to. Even though these songs were quite long, it felt like the music stayed connected instead of switching up throughout - without feeling stale.
Beautiful album that has such a clean improved rhythm
bom, jazz, apenas instrumental
Otro invento de Davis. Este disco puede sonar como música ambiente en cualquier escena de buen cine.
Great listening experience, this had so many different transitions in this album that allowed for a very trippy experience. Also was great for focusing on some work tasks. Would recommend to a friend that is wanting to get into Jazz.
*Great jazz fusion album
Scioccante trovare John che suona così già prima di BB, non so cosa pensare... BB resta nel mio cuore e non ho avuto il tempo di riascoltarlo, darò 4* nella fiducia
Initial views of the album are surprising, two track album with each track being above 10 mins is new to me. I've never heard something in this form before. Music was more neo-soul, experimental Jazz. I like jazz a lot, listened to it a lot in passing haven't really delved into each artist like that though besides Chet Baker and also my favorites from Bossa Nova being Louis Bonfa. Track 1, "Shhh / Peaceful" felt exceptionally long and bloated by the time it was ending but the quiet drums, organs and bass carry an element of suspense and melancholy to the track which even if it drags on and gets repetitive keeps the track somewhat alive. Track 2, "In a Silent Way" it started off slow with guitars and the switch around 4 minutes was exceptionally done and caught me off-guard. I prefer this song over the first one because of its structure and the way the song continues from the beginning till the end. Although it was a minute or so longer than the first song it did not have the same bloated factor for me. Loved the bass work, the drums and the organs and the trumpets that showed up near the end. The slow starting and dreamy de-escalating ending of the song gave it a bouncy (almost hip) structure with a middle that is full of life. Final review: 7/10 Might revisit this again and put it on as background music when i am performing any activity or studying and i need something going on in the back.
This effort has both Chick Corea AND Herbie Hancock?! It was impressive to read about before I even started, and I wasn't sure what to expect since this is that transitioning album that features electric fusion. It was a lot more jazz than expected, but this is 1969, that makes this effort a pioneer in the sound which might now seem normalized. I hear the influence in my latest Kamasi Washington purchase, then again I'm sure this has influenced jazz in a very broad way. Slow texture isn't for everyone. The beauty here is often in the empty spaces, the moments between the solid instruments and their exchanges. This effort also really reflects jazz as communication, the essence of it's beginnings. We hear the musicians edge each other on, call each other out, and these interactions can be agitated or paused, but always smooth. This is not the album I'd recommend a newcomer to the genre. This is a piece for someone who's already learned to listen, or for people who appreciate the art of ambience. 4.4/5
It’s good for relaxing.
Great album. Huge Miles Davis fan. Very relaxing for a weekend morning. 7.5/10
Mesmerizing
This was darn enjoyable.
This is a hard one to rate for me. I need to be in a certain mood to really enjoy this (a late night with a glass of whisky maybe?). It definitely deserves more than 3 stars but I don't entirely feel like it's a 4 star album.
Af en toe iets te langdradig, maar muzikaal top.
Niet mijn favoriet maar wel echt heel erg tof alsnog
Muy experimental y adelantado para la época. Improvisaciones excelentes y magnífica propuesta. 8
I like the title track In a Silent Way. I was familiar with the song from Carlos Santana, but it was my first time hearing the original.
It's funny how this was controversial at the time, considering this seems like nothing compared to Bitches Brew! This is a nice transitional record on its own though.
2 songs and 40 minutes later, I want to go to a jazz club
I really liked this. I do not have some great history in regards to listening to jazz, mainly recognizing some of it from it being sampled in hip hop. I had listened to "Kind of Blue" and "Bitches Brew" before beginning this list. I enjoyed this album, It is very subdued without a lot of soloing over one another but not anything like easy listening.
Miles Davis (from jazz) hears a different kind of silence. Imagine what his noisy is like! I love this skitter-scatter dream of a record. A firetruck just passed as I was listening and it could've been part of the record.
Haunting!!!!
I've discovered that jazz fusion is my favorite kind of jazz so I really enjoyed this. Incredible lineup of players and I was surprised how little Miles actually plays trumpet on this. It's much more focused on his role as a bandleader and what he conjures with this murdererer's row of players. I really love how side 2, "In a Simple Way," moves from stately, kind of somber feel to Latin kind of bossa-nova, then back. This is a phenomenal jazz album that sets the stage for a more experimental approach in the 70's.
Kinda nice having only two tracks to reflect on. First one is a really interesting, slowly morphing sound collage with pretty cool electronic experimentation. But highlight is definitely the title track. I love how it starts with the ambient, almost Americana feel and then suddenly switches up about four mins in. Been watching Twin Peaks lately, and i can see how Badalamenti easily could've been influenced by this song in particular for the soundtrack. I hear a pretty straight line from this to stuff like Audrey's Dance. The mysterious quality of it, never knowing what's around the corner. Gotta love it
Very interesting! Kinda ambient-feeling, lots of unusual chords/progressions and shifting between different modes?keys?somethings. Great cool vibes to work to. The shifting nature of the music sometimes makes it hard to latch onto.
Reminds me of Sesame Street
De Miles isch eifach the goat
Not my cup of tea but a maestro in his domain
Jazz fusion, spacey
Great album

Som ett något mer återhållet intro till Bitches Brew. A-sidan något starkare än b-sidan i mitt tycket. Det är repetitiv, nästan monotont, ändå svänger det. Trots att man maler på i nästan 20 minuter hittas inget avslut utan man tvingas till att tona ut Shhh / Peaceful.
very chill, i like
Could tel that this was revolutionary for the day, reminds me of a nice salon where I’d dance on the table
This was great. Looking forward to more by Miles Davis
Always enjoy Miles Davis, just easy listening in a positive way
Trumpet bangers
Great
Gives lofi vibes and I love it when I need some peace or focus time.

No. 111 Another great listen. Smooth, cool, and classic
This is what im looking for. Previous Miles was a bit too dense for me, but this was lovely and more accessible. Absolutely mesmeric rhythm section and then the lead trumpets providing melody and storytelling.
This feels like I like a precursor to 'Bitches Brew'. Has all the fusion hallmarks that resonate to my ear. Just the right amount of avant-garde, quirkiness, without losing its way. I'll be returning to this and hopefully adding it to my shelves. 20 minute songs?!? Y'all gotta be joking. They are good though I will give you that.
Fjögur rennsli. Mjög næs, mjög töff.
4/5 Bruxão mandou a banda repetir dois acordes pra ficar tocando trompete por 20 minutos. Brabo.
Rock fans don't think it's rock, and jazz fans rejected it as jazz - so I guess that indicates he's created something new. It's serene, it's exquisite - but with less emotional impact than 'Kind of Blue'. But it's certainly more structured and less free-form than 'Bitches Brew'; and so it lands somewhere between those two. Whilst the cover is mildly petrifying, like something from 'Get Out', it's to the higher end of the scale on account of the fantastic title track: and perhaps one day it may tip into outstanding territory.
Entendí al toque lo que el tipo tiene. Vibra distinto. Hermoso album 7/10
Very moody, captures a great atmosphere. Balances between feeling quite heavy and very light. Wonderful musicianship.
so much is going on but I can hear each individual instrumental clearly. very unique experience
I liked the electronic elements and the maximalist sound design
Good, not great, Miles. A def bridge album b/w Hard Bop and Fusion. McLaughlin’s guitar noodling pretty well defines this one.
Takes a while to build but two incredible tracks
2/7/26. 7/10
4.5
Jazz is not my vibe but I felt like a cool cat
It’s a jazz album, can’t say I understand why it is so amazing but I appreciate it.
Listening session: february 4th, while commuting to internship Listened to before: no Thoughts: I’m at a point in my life where I’m trying to appreciate jazz more. This album helped me to see that even an album with two 18-minutes instrumental tracks can be interesting to listen to Favourite track: Shhh / Peaceful
From the man who brought you kind of blue and bitches brew comes another modal masterpiece
Really liked the dreamy quality. It’s really not as trumpet-centric as I expected.
I love this period of Miles and had never listened to the one that kicked it off. Beautiful and compelling, gonna be listening to this more and digging deeper into this era for sure!
This is very lovely
beautifuuuul 🥹🥹🥹 (besonders zweiter song)
V I B E S.
chill af
Great and short !
This was nice background listening. Jazz I will actually listen to. Felt more productive with it.
For whatever reason, this is the one canonical jazz album that's always worked for me! I guess it's because the keyboards sound really cool? I'm not smart enough to know what's going on here, otherwise?
4/5
bitches brew but less
Not my favourite Miles album but still really solid.
Too short, why would you send me a two song album
2 tracks Great flow
S'good jazz.
ya like jazz
favorite - Shhh / Peaceful 8/10
Despite my years of choir, I am a big old normie and know little about jazz. But this was so lovely. Both songs were engaging and dreamy but with distinct vibes.
peak jazz right here really a lot going on but well coordinated overall love it
An amazing Jazz album to for a moment be transported to another world. Great as background music to focus or to just generally day dream to.
The trumpet was my least favorite part, but it was still really good and vibey.
I feel like the pattern with jazz is at first it’s ok but doesn’t make a ton of sense and then you forget about it and catch yourself enjoying it and realising you’ve been listening to this for 20 min. I enjoyed that.
Shhh / Peaceful : ★★★☆☆ In a Silent Way : ★★★★☆ Overall : ★★★★☆
En vrai vraiment banger 😼
My album two days was Bitches Brew by Miles Davis, and while I didn’t like that one, I liked this one a ton more! Really glad I got this one, I especially liked Shhh/Peaceful
Середина "In a silent way".
What a stacked lineup of musicians on this album!
Lowkey weightless.
Two album sides but really several “movements” of music. Ethereal and moody. Not something I’d seek out again unless I were doing an afternoon of Miles.
Never listened to anything by Miles Davis. I was in awe of how long, yet, at the same time thoroughly engaging and beautiful Shhhh/Peaceful is. What a great introduction to this era of jazz music.
I really liked it, it was nice background music. Was surprised it was only 2 songs but I kinda liked it.
First track: Shhh/Peaceful so far, I love the vibes. I've heard of Miles Davis before, but had never listened to it. I feel like I'm at a nice restaurant with an amazing live band. I would say, since the songs dont have a pause between them, the album feels longer. I think it also has to do with the fact that now (2026) songs are like...2 mins long to go viral. AND I can't really say which part I like the most, it just blends in. I would say overall, it moves in waves and its's like the opposite of the name. ok time for the second track "In A Silent Way" started off very mellow and I was loving it, then it was an explosion of noise hahahah but very nice. Can't complain. I think overall, I can listen to this while doing chores, studying, in the morning to relax, at night, while I cook something. Some parts make me feel like I'm in a 90's mafia movie.
Marissa anderson sounds a bit like the beginning of the second song
Eg lige jazz eg, savna litt særpreg
IT LASTS 19 MINUTES'??!?!?!??!?! not a lot my taste but it's cool if you want to chill, actually it's a good song and mind you i feel like im a cool woman with her cafeteria or even a cool detective in a bar after a long day at work. This could be easily something a Persona game would have
Very relaxing musical album
Small jazz combos are sick. This was a small jazz combo. Enough said.
10 years after 'Kind of Blue,' you feel Davis still breezing past the borders and expectations of his art, nonchalantly as ever. Non-standard instruments are at center and wonderfully warm: electric guitar, electric piano (I especially loved this), and electric organ. Splashes of dissonant chords unsettle the listening experience from becoming too 'easy.' There's much here that still feels fresher than today's ambient electronica. The title track was more poignant for me--both the slower bookend themes and when the bassist (I think?) finds that groove in the late middle theme. However, the transitions were too abrupt for me: did I read correctly that this was just a copy and paste? This album does prod me to search for more jazz fusion (Spotify intriguingly suggests 'Japanese Jazz Fusion'--likely influenced very much by Miles) and enjoy in the same way that I did today: winding down the evening, drink in hand, rain outside--and staring blankly at emails before looking up Davis's life on my phone. Solid day.
After listening to Kind of Blue a couple weeks ago, it's cool to hear how Davis evolves his sound to something more funk rock, but in a subtle, quiet way.
so dreamy and chill
- Great instrumental jazz- only two very lengthy tracks, so an interesting way to start this challenge - I don't know a lot about Miles Davis but I do know that I like jazz and want to learn more about it, so it's cool that that's happening basically by chance now - THEY RECORDED THIS IN ONE SESSION??? 0: - Listening while it's dark and rainy outside - God I love that little electric piano
Not my typical genre, way more chill and soothing than I expected.
Don’t believe the negative reviews about this one. I found it easy listening and will definitely revisit it.
Classic as hell. Love a Miles Davis, anytime anywhere. Tempted to say this is Miles at his best, but when wasn’t he. Love everything about it.
Very nice jazz experience. There was a chord progression (I think that's what it's called) that was played multiple times on the guitar that started out very similar to another progression on The Last of Us (2013)'s soundtrack. Just thought that might be interesting to point out. Favorite Track: In a Silent Way
Great listen, never heard it. Miles is the man but I’m still learning to lean into it…
Great, relaxing and entertaining, full of new and great noises and sounds 1/1/26
Really like the freewheeling jazz
Great stuff
Sounds very artistic and intellectual without being boring. Those grooves are irresistible. It's more like a piecing together of jam sessions of Miles Davis and his boys, so it may feel a bit inconsistent tonally. Still those thirty eight minutes flew by. The more I listen to the trumpet, the more I think that it's so lyrical and grand at the same time.
*1969. *Just 2 songs, 38 mins total. *Beautiful, peaceful. Just a really pretty, lovely listen. *As a non-musician, even I know the musicianship is fantastic. RATING - 8/10
Heel chill voor tijdens het lezen
90/100
Sounds like NYC at night
Beautiful jazz!!!
10/10- 2 songs. seemless sax didnt even realize the album had ended. perfect for lazy day craft days
Nice music to walk home to and will be listening to it again for soure.
Mostly some smooth jazz with a splash of experimental sounds here and there. All in all if you like jazz you'd probably like this.
Coldplay left me well, cold
This album gave me a very relaxed time, as well as introducted me, by circumstances, to Mike Oldfiend's album Ommadawn. So, all is well.
Great energy with a lot of variance between tracks!
Beautiful and masterful jazz.
It’s a nice background album, and different to what I knew Jazz to be. Interesting to hear the transition from Acoustic Jazz to Jazz Fushion.
Once upon a time I wouldn’t have touched this with a ten foot barge pole or more realistically got my ears within 100 yards. But what a revelation this album is. I’ve been dabbling with Miles Davis and enjoying his extended compositions for a few years now. Not so much that I would listen on a daily basis but when in the mood a few times a year. Which is enough in my book for this type of jazz. Keep it for a treat every so often and what better time to treat yourself than on Christmas Eve?Welcome relief from Slade, Wham, Wizard etc and before we all get a Christmas album tomorrow- maybe? 4/5 24/12/25
Doesn't get boring & creates a unique and nice atmosphere. Will listen again.
Very cool
It felt like a soundtrack for my day when i listened to it. Couldn't pay attention fully but definitely will go back. It feels rushed but still soothing at the same time.
Cool album from the coolest motherfucker. I like this album just as much as Bitches Brew, which came out a few years later. This was definitely an indication of what was coming.
8-10
Nice jazzy sound. I like how it really is just kinda of one long song but yet doesn’t feel like it’s repeating itself
Tendre et cosmique.
2 tracks is exactly the dose for me
nice music makes my brainjuice pumpin
This is [white] boomers/gen X’ers/“I voted for Obama” music to the max. There’s a loud tranquility to its length; each progression in the two, 18-20 min long track has a sonic undercurrent of prolonged ominousness that adds depth to a single musical motif: reminiscing I bangs w/it but am I gonna relisten to this shit? Prob not.
What a wonderful listen and a wonderful way to spend a morning with Miles!
Lovely album. Shhh/Peaceful didn’t stand out as much to me but still enjoyed it and thought the name was fitting. In a Silent Way is great. It ebbs and flows and it’s energy varies throughout. The changes don’t feel out of place. The beginning is beautiful and gentle, the middle get more energetic and groovy, and it ends with a similar gentleness to the beginning. Wonderful jazz fusion album that I am stuck between a 4 and a 5.
This is good jazz. Will definitely listen again. 4 Stars.
Probably the best jazz album I've heard. Pleasant album, good to study to and overall enjoyable
I love how the second track was bookended by softer parts and sped up in the middle, they were so beautiful (reminded me of “Albatross” by Fleetwood Mac and “Indian Summer” by The Doors); I liked how both tracks included rock band-like instruments to complement the trumpet
It’s probably not my absolute favorite Mike’s Davis album, but it’s a contender. Somehow or other, it’s ambient music that also gestures at jazz-rock. Iconic, anyway.
Like finding your way through the fog of a red light late night
One of his most beautiful albums
It's Miles Davis, so it's solid.
Really enjoyed this. The second track, In a Silent Way is so beautifully chill. The guitars.. I never would have guessed this is Miles really. Sounds more like some 00s ambient prog stuff. 3.8/5
Hard for me to review as I'm not much of a Jazz aficionado. But I did enjoy my listen.
A little repetitive but not boring; held my interest for 38 minutes. I don’t have the music knowledge to understand what makes this album particularly special, but I’d come back to it.
Good jazz album. Nothing obnoxious or annoying and a reasonable length considering it’s two songs. 4/5
This was very nice. Moody and lovely. A good backdrop for me working on report cards
Miles really redefines what jazz can be- jazz is hard, not sure how often I’ll come back to it, but the groovy-ness is of this album is fantastic, especially how early it was and how great it sounds.
Hot take... this album would have been so much better without Miles' trumpet. Not to say I didn't like the album, its really good, but the backing is funky, or chill and his trumpet is just too much... jazz?
Great!
If I’m honest I always preferred the music of the alumni. Mike Stern, Herbie Hancock, Breckers, Marcus Miller, John Coltrane, Ron Carter, Chick Corea, Gil Evans, John McLaughlin. Pat metheny. and on and on. Having said that Miles is quality stuff and while this isn’t quite my favourite it’s pretty good. Miles of course understood that jazz needed to develop to continue to thrive. And so for him to do it unlike others who wanted it frozen and preserved in aspic he is to be admired for those efforts. It’s almost definitely one of my favourite Miles lineups: McLaughlin, Joe Zawinul, Tony Williams, Chick, Wayne. All he needed was one of the electric bassists - Stanley Clarke, say. Having said that Dave Bell is just perfect on double bass. 3.5 stars. (Being Miles- it would be 5 for nearly anyone else.),
This album is split between two parts/tracks. It takes a more jazz fusion experimental approach for Miles Davis and incorporates more electric instruments than his previous albums. The first track has a very ambient jazz feel with an atmospheric and meditative vibe, while the second track leans more towards the avant-garde and experimental side. Released at the perfect time, this album had a significant influence on the musical landscape and the direction things were evolving towards. It contributed to the early stages of ambient and electronic music and played a role in the development of progressive rock. For example, when I started exploring Soft Machine, some of their music reminded me of the second track on this album. Whether they were directly influenced by this album or it’s just a coincidence, I’m not sure. Regardless, for anyone who enjoys innovative and experimental music, this is definitely an important album to check out.
Two classic tracks
It's jazz.
The second track alone would be an easy 5 for me. Sadly, I didn’t like the first one as much, but it doesn’t make it a bad album at all. I look forward to hearing more music by Davis.
First full album listen and second full Miles Davis album. I don't regularly listen to jazz but Davis makes me think I ought to. An excellent vinyl spin for evenings.
absolutely peak background music while locking in when studying
A Miles Davis that I haven't heard before. Wonderful.
Enjoyed this much more than some of his other stuff
It’s a great listen; while it might not reach the heights of Kind of Blue, it’s definitely very good
The man can play.
Sonic delight
Beautiful album with extraordinary playing. There’s a funny reverse pretension among a lot of folks who don’t like jazz - there’s this need to bring it down, claiming its talentless drivel. No, this is not what your insurance company uses for hold music. No, you could not play this yourself if you knew how to play trumpet. These are in fact world class musicians and this is exceptional music. You do not have to like it, and given the experimental nature of it you can find the experiment to be a failure. But why are you even bothering to listen to 1001 albums if you are inclined to demean something that just isn’t for you?
The album contains 2 twenty minute songs. But it’s really more like 2 twenty minute journeys through time and sound.
This took me on a journey! I loved it
Fantastic album. Smooth without becoming background noise, constantly engaging. Nice
It's all about track 2 for me. Track 1 was hard to break into but I got the groove of the second piece. And there it is, an album review discussing two songs that also discusses the entire album.
“in a silent way” is a phrase that sounds really fitting for this album. it’s really like. nocturnal. signals to me that i really need to try more jazz cuz holy i enjoyed this 8/10
one of the best jazz albums. creates a seamless and smooth environment like no other. it doesn't even feel like jazz, or music. fav song: shhh / peaceful
A really interesting album, totally enjoyable and chill. Though in general I don't like jam albums very much, this is an elevated example.
Didn't get on this til Monday morning and glad I saved it. Wonderfully calm and serene. What a nice way to start the week.
Ahead of his time for sure. Not the biggest jazz fan ever but this was different. Definitely good driving or walking music. The faster really jazzy parts weren’t for me. However the first few and last few minutes of in a silent way LP mix was some of the most beautiful music I’ve ever heard. Seriously.
Again for my second Miles Davis album - nice enough! Had in the background for chess and it was chill and nice! But nothing to note really
Another great album from a great musician! Definitely not his best but still pretty good. A chilled listen rather than a challenging one.
Like Miles Davis …
big fan
There is a mood that hits me every now and then, and when it does, I crave hearing In A SIlent Way. Sometimes it needs to be played on repeat. Most of the time though, it's hard to get through it in one go. A truly special album.
The spirit of jazz paid me a visit! I was very much looking forward to hearing a Miles Davis album, it’s absolutely one of the reasons for doing this challenge. It was hard to know what to expect and I know this isn’t for everyone. I found this captivating and I would love to make time to return. It didn’t feel too long, which could have been the case with near 20min jazz tracks. The overall run time is actually very accessible and I could imagine this being background music to whilst I work or an evening drink, whilst equally I could sit and listen with this being my sole focus. Excellent stuff.
I can't believe I hadn't checked this out before! John McLaughlin's tone on In A Silent Way is just so beautifully rich and open. I really like the format of both tracks too — their soft, slow intros opening into more lively jams that then return to their opening themes to wrap things up. Really interesting mixture of major and minor modes in the keyboards on the title track when Miles first comes in.
I sat on my balcony enjoying the view from my new apartment while listening to this tonight and it was a perfect pairing. This is a very cool album. It is so subtle yet intricate and precise. I haven't really listened to jazz fusion before, so this was a great introduction to it. All of the musicians were so skilled that they made the album sound effortless. The best moments for me were the slow, peaceful sections at the start and end of In a Silent Way. 8.5/10.
I've never listened to a full Miles Davis album before. This was really pretty
First time listening to a full Miles Davis album while paying closer attention to whats going on. Feel like I've heard so much about this guy, so it was cool to finally listen to a full album. Enjoyed it quite a bit, interested in hearing more ofnhis stuff now. Album art seems intense for what the music sounds like, that stare goes straight through my soul. 8.5/10

Jazz Fusion really is the coolest. Doing this has introduced me to how much I love Miles Davis' music. You can feel the influence of this album, interesting to read up on the mixed opinions when it releases too. Adored the 1st song, wish I liked the 2nd more.
cool calm collected. nice jazz record that kept me entertained. I usually don’t vibe with 20 min+ songs but I can see myself coming back to this. appropriate cover
I see this as a more progressive, mildly psychedelic version of Davis's earlier records. And it works well. The musicianship is about as high-calibre as it comes. The lineup, man... you can't ask for much better. Wayne Shorter, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland. Wow. The trumpet playing is, of course, utterly beautiful (when it wants to be; it's quite brash and outspoken at other times). The end of track 2, just as all the other instruments fade out, is the absolute peak of the album, I think. Just Davis's slow, crooning notes over a soft drone in the bass. (It's singing, man, the trumpet's singing!) The bassline, which repeats more or less unchanged for almost 18 minutes, is hypnotising. So what brings this album down to a 4, compared to the likes of Kind Of Blue? The main difference is the energy. At a certain point, for a really great album, I'm looking for ups and downs. And though there are technically some of those throughout A Silent Way, they're very subtle and spread out. Fair enough. Extended jazz can be like that. It's just not for me (as much as a faster paced progressive jazz). Davis achieves this extremely consistently chill mood, and nails it to a T – the brass entries are smooth rather than harshly cutting – and though we shift from "chill A" to "chill B", we never escape the chillism. I'm sure there are a mountain of advanced musical ideas here that my rock-loving brain is too feeble to comprehend. Ah, well. You can't comprehend everything. 4/5 Key tracks: Both of them
oh yea jazzy baby
Short and sweet
Really good.
It set a minimal landscape yet it kept me interested throughout. It is impressive to hear them improvise while keeping the minimal atmosphere. It feels like an Eno album a decade too early. The album cover is amazing as well Rating: 4.4
