Reviews (page 7 of 13)

I used to have this album. Maybe I still do (somewhere). I think I prefer "To Bring You My Love", but this is pretty good.

This is my 2nd PJ Harvey album since starting and the first one was a very easy 1 so I was pretty bummed when this popped up. That said, where the other album was very experimental, weird, and overall just hard to listent to; this is just more of a straightforward rock album. Really reminds me of Garbage or some of the more grungy female artists from the 90s, would fit right in with that era though I guess 2000 isn't that far behind. This Mess We're In has Thom Yorke out of nowhere. Not only was this album not a 1, I downright enjoyed it.

Very listenable. I do not know all the back stories, but glad this Thom collaboration happened.

Enjoyable album

PJ Harvey is explosive just at the right moments. She strikes a balance between thoughtful contemplative desperation and passionate and energetic anger, and manages to create a memorable and engaging experience with Stories from the City to the Sea. The record flows well and most tracks are cut off just at the right time, with the small exception of the last two. It is a difficult feat for most artists to have a song be engaging for more than a couple of minutes with today’s average attention span, and unfortunately these drag on for too long. As a Radiohead fanatic, Thom Yorke’s presence could never degrade my listening experience. However, his first feature is wasted on ‘Beautiful Feeling’, which sounds like an inferior version of the track that came before it, ‘One Line’. It tries nothing new, and does not have its tight instrumentals or energy. The quality continues on ‘The Whores…”, though I would gladly skip the last 30 seconds to escape from the annoyingly repetitive screaming. When Yorke returns on ‘This Mess We’re In’, it results in something that is hauntingly beautiful, narratively fascinating, and easily the best cut on this album. In the last couple of tracks, ’You Said Something’ and ‘This is Love’ further stand out as great moments. 4/5.

Fairly easy listening from PJ

This is a fine album from a favorite of mine. Favorite songs ...A Place For Us, with some striking rhythm guitar work and a stellar pj vocal performance. The haunting It's the Best Thing. The muscular guitar chords of The Whore's Hustle and the Hustler's Whore. The beautiful duet with Thom Yorke on This Mess We're In and my favorite song the absolutely gorgeous You Said Something with a melody that will haunt you for days. Kamikaze sounds like it could have been straight from the Rid of Me sessions, and the closer We Float is as beautiful a ballad as Polly has ever penned. A solid 4 🌟 album for me.

I have three accounts, and this is the third listen for me. The first two times I gave this album a 3/5 stars rating. I had never heard of her before. Now, I'm kind of a fan. This album is pretty great. Solid 4/5 now.

An album full of highlights - and it's not even her best!

Thoroughly liked this one. I love turn of the century alt rock, and this is no exception.

Wow! Ladies with unusual voices! Vibey rock.

Properly enjoyed this album. Grungey feeling at times, and always a good level of rock music with strong vocals. Highlight was probably "This Mess We're In" with Thom Yorke or "This Is Love". Will probably listen again, and will have a look to see what else PJ Harvey has done.

great - better that my expectations. Good vocals and lyrics but the guitars are the best

Really enjoyed this. It definitely felt indicative of 90s music but also somehow felt fresh. Got New York City vibes throughout

Two songs in, I already love it. How come I'd never listened to this album before?

Tolle Frau, tolle Sängerin!

I haven't really dabbled in PJ after the first couple of albums. Not as raw or barbed down as the earlier albums. This is a good album, with good songs.

I thought this was pretty good, just a strong alt rock album. Her voice is great and it didn't fuck around with being super soft then loud then soft again like Rid of Me does. Like this more for sure

Ace. Great voice and rocks when it rocks

8/10 jiji

Actually really liked this one. An album that was honestly a little heavier than I expected and would go back and forth from that to more of that singer songwriter vibe. Good stuff. Favorite Tracks: “Big Exit,” “Beautiful Feeling,” and “The Whores Hustle and the Hustlers Whore

Great one, never heard it in full until now

Gran disco.

Some songs a bit forgettable but others are excellent

Chill vibes.

Great - had not really listened to this before, but really enjoyed it.

I heard good things about her and I really enjoyed this album. It had some great songs and was really consistent. Thom Yorke feature was also amazing. 8.8/10

Great stuff - everything I hear from PJ Harvey I love.

Great alt-rock album which fits perfectly with the fall weather. Thom Yorke made some great contributions aswell

Nice, but not really my thing.

One can be forgiven for thinking that PJ Harvey had gone metropolitan in regards to this album's cover and that her ambitions had grown wider and higher as a result. While that much is true, it is also a bit of a disservice given what she's offering to the table. Stories... had not abandoned what made PJ one of the more provocative women in rock; if anything, it allowed her to obtain more lenses for storytelling and those lenses give her reason to expand the musical palate. As with all of her records, Stories... is the kind she needed to make for the time. Favorites: Big Exit, Good Fortune, A Place Called Home, Beautiful Feeling, This Mess We're In, Kamikaze, This is Love, We Float.

Heart vibez. Enjoyable album

First listen

One where I like all the elements but have never been able to really get into the final thing. Crunchy alt rock guitars, dissonant chords and dark timbre, moody and expressive, great dynamics, and vocals that range from grunge angst to Jeff Buckley falsetto wail. No hooks, earworms or really standout riffs to hold onto though.

The kind of melancholy music I typically like but didn't really hit right. May be worst a relisten

nice listen, but a bit of too repetitive for my tastes. middle of the album was a highlight

I felt like this album was supposed to evoke emotion in me but it didn't really. Except for This Mess We're In. Banger. 3.5/5

Not my cup of tea

You can hear the influence as PJ sounds just like Chrissie Hynde, especially in the gritty first few songs. I didn't really enjoy the Thom Yorke songs as they added a softness that she didn't really need. Loved the strong female punk aspect of this as well.

Really weird, some songs are nothing more than childish rhymes and thrown together whilst others are quite good.

7/10 Fav Tracks: You Said Something, Big Exit Heard before? ---–- ✅ Saved a Song? ----- ❌ Saved Album? --–-- ✅ Will Listen Again? -- ❌ Album Cover -------Almost 90s-esque. Perfect for a 2000 album

I expect, it rather want, a bit of grit and grime from a PJ Harvey album. But to be fair, I'm not too familiar with most of her catalog. And this felt lacking in that. It wasn't bad but didn't excite me enough to warrant a 4 star rating.

Really like a few of the lyrics

Type of CD you find buried under a bunch of stuff in the glove box.

pretty good album. Not enough to lift it to a four. The song with Tom York is pretty good. Not a huge fan of TJ Harvey’s voice or delivery style, but the tunes are generally solid.

The songs are almost there but don’t quite capture what the vibe is. Very 90s sounding

not my vibe

listened twice even but just didn’t hit

2000. Contains themes of love that are tied into Harvey's affection for New York City.

Good - not necessarily my type

On paper, I should like PJ Harvey. But I don’t.

I'm fond of this album and of PJ Harvey's music, but I wouldn't consider it a must-listen album. Hearing Thom Yorke on this was a nice surprise. Their voices mesh in a lovely way. fav song: one line

THOM YORKE DETECTED, great feature My quest to understand PJ Harvey continues, this one is so different from the last one that popped, so much less abrasive

Having a thom yorke feature on your album that is basically just a thom yorke song, and also have it be the best song on the album is certainly a choice I did enjoy this more than the last PJ album that came up on the list 3.5

Högt och lågt. Får väl bli ett mittenbetyg

Ballt men lite långtråkigt. Stark trea!

An album being generated by this lady is just like a dentist appointment, I knew the day was coming but I tried to forget about it. I have heard a fair bit of this artist’s work as my bro is a big fan but it just doesn’t do anything for me. As I started listening this view was validated but then I heard “The Whores Bundle” which was wonderful and the “Mess We are In” with Thom Yorke was absolutely lovely, the spoken word bits sounding very much like the Tindersticks. Closing track “We Float” was nice too. Now I am actually interested to hear more.

Good fortune indeed

I though this was pretty good

It's good so far, although not quite to my taste. It's pretty iconic to release an album on 1st Jan 2000 though, gotta say I'm jealous I wasn't around to see the beginning of a new millennia and all the art that came out of it. Back to the album, This Mess We're In is probably my favourite so far. I kinda feel like it's making me more depressed just listening to it (the whole album) though.

Favorite Track: Big Exit

I've never really bought into the cult of PJ so I had low expectations coming into this one. I was pleasantly surprised how much I didn't hate it.

Not as dark as her earlier albums with plenty of lush reverb. Reminiscent of Smith, Sioux and Hynde which it a pretty good league. Worth a listen or two

‘Big exit’ turned out to be a weak opening track as the album got so much better (for a bit) after that initial track which felt flat and forced. After that the album had 5 or 6 great melodic rousing tracks including the two with Thom Yorke on. Unfortunately there were 4/5 tracks that went back to a basic boring, nothing special state of mind, a shame as the makings of a great album were there. I really enjoyed the tracks ‘you said something’ ‘this mess were in’ ‘one line’ and ‘this is love’ however my favourite track was - ‘good fortune’ Worst track - ‘kamikaze’ in the end. Overall felt so mediocre by the end but it did have those great tracks mixed in so a slightly above average 6/10.

Pj Harvey Lazy track by track review (ones not there I didn't really notice 🤔) The opening clarion call of chiming guitars announce a brighter more upbeat Polly. Not one I have ever been used to but I really enjoy this. Good Fortune - "threw my bad fortune of the top of a tall building". Fuck me, where has this optimism come from? 😄 Sounds a lot like a Chrissy Hynd song. Maybe Polly showing her influences but this is an absolute banger. One line - one dimensional The Whores Hustle - bit directionless to these ears. This Mess we're In and You Said Something - kind of ran together in my head but both occupied some kind of space of longing. Enjoyed! But what was the "something import"? Kamikaze - sounds like a demo that got on the album by accident This is love - nah it is but when it comes to explaining the uncontrollable desperation of lust and desire then this is spot on. The come down of Horses in my Dreams a welcome change of pace and tone. Even then it feels like Polly is right there in your face. Demo like feel of We Float opens up into a soaring Kate Bush like chorus of "one day we'll float, take life as it comes". A perfect optimistic closer. This Wicked Tongue continues to prove my theory that hidden tracks are hidden for a reason. Best Track - This is Love Worst Track - Kamikaze 7/10

Favorite track: Kamikaze

At various times, PJ Harvey’s voice reminded me of Exene Cervenka (of X), Laura Nyro, and Bjork. The duet with Thom Yorke is cool. And while I enjoyed the album fairly well, it hasn’t really stuck with me. A decent entry, but one I’m unlikely to think about in the future.

Don’t love the voice

Big Exit 3.3 Good Fortune 3.4 A Place Called Home 3 One Line 3.2 Beautiful Feeling 3 The Whores Hustle and the Hustlers Whore 3.4 This Mess We're In 3.6 You Said Something 3.4 Kamikaze 3.4 This Is Love 3.5 Horses in My Dreams 3.2 We Float 3.4 Score: 3.316666667

Probably be told I'm not Gen-X enough cause I was never a big PJ fan. I get told the same thing when I say I don't really like the Pixies.

900th PJ Harvey album on this list, all of them are 2.5

This is a good album. I would rate it 3 1/2 stars. The lyrics are the strong point of the album. The good songs are A Place called home, One time and Kamikaze. If you are a PJ Harvey you might want to pick this album up.

I'm not sure i liked it as much as I did as a teen; it plays differently now. A bit clunky and disjointed in places.

I kept avoiding it all morning. When I did listen, I liked it. I was pleasantly suprised

Fine, I don't think I really get PJ Harvey

A three is a bit low… but I find it a bit uneven.

I think this is a moment in time kind of album. I know people worship PJ Harvey, but it kind of just sounds meh to me; like the same two chords, back and forth for most of the album. I enjoyed the Thom Yorke features!

PJ Harvey is another case of "Want to like it more than I do" for me. I like her but the music ultimately is a bit boring to me. It's not bad, but it's also nothing that I would select conciously, I guess.

I was pleasantly surprised. Sort of sounded like female Radiohead for a decent amount(makes sense with the song This Mess We’re In being written for Thom Yorke). Not sure why I like this less than smashing pumpkins (Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness), because it feels just as varied and high quality in terms of instrumentation and productions, this being a little more produced. I guess I’m just getting a bit sick of this alternative style from this time… Pretty good, and will listen to more of PJ.

+1 for the Thom song

It was good

I fucking love PJ Harvey. It's nice that the randomizer spun up this particular album, which is the one I probably know the least. But maybe I know it least because I like it the least? Mmm, I think that's true. For me it doesn't have the blow-your-socks-off musical violence of the first albums or the stronger subtle songs and arrangements of later ones like Let England Shake and Hope 6. Does that make this album bad? Fuck no, I love PJ Harvey.

My first proper album from PJ Harvey, and I’m still not completely sure what to make of her style. 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘢 has a clean, direct sound and a really strong atmosphere running through it. A few tracks stand out immediately, and the whole album feels very confident and self-assured. At the same time, a lot of it starts to blur together for me after a while. I can appreciate the mood and songwriting, but I don’t fully connect with it emotionally. Still a good album, just not one that completely wins me over.

Not bad, I've heard worse! 3.25 rounded down to 3. Favorite tracks: This Mess We're In, Horses In My Dreams, We Float

Ten un sonido moi interesante, non me encanta pero gardei a de This Medss We're In en favoritas.

Liked this a lot more than I expected to. Maybe not my exact aesthetic, but I have been wanting to get into more female rock musicians, and this was a really fun album from an artist I'd never really thought of listening to before. Just the right amount of grunge influence and lyrics that only rarely cross the line into goofiness or cliche. I'll definitely come back to it.

Like radiohead, but boring. Or like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but boring. Maybe like oasis but boring?

She’s a cool girl

Not a lot of opinions on this one. It was good, had some good listens,

I mean it's alright... Doesn't match the same intensity as rid of me and I think this record just doesn't play to Harvey's strengths as well but she still does okay in this more contemplative state

punk rocks

I don’t love PJ Harvey, but I kind of like the post punk sounds of this one. Especially the opening track. It kind of echoing post punk, grunge and even early hardcore. The Thom Yorke collab on the album is really cool though. Feels very Radiohead.

It is an Alternative Rock album released on 1 January 2000. Enjoyed the “Good Fortune”, “One Line”, “This Mess We’re In” and “This Is Love”.

It never dawned on me until Thom Yorke was featured on this album that PJH is the female Thom Yorke.

Good album. Definitely has a lot of 90s vibes to it. Seems like it has some Radiohead sound, even before I saw Thom Yorker were on a couple of songs. Vocals sound almost 70s/80s with the rest of the music being from the 90s.

PJ is not my particularly favorite singer but the music is fun. My glorious king Thomas Yorkenshire is feature so that adds .5 stars. 3.5/5

I like her voice, the music and the song with the Radiohead guy. Just can't decided if I would actually go back and listen to the album or any of the songs again. 3.5/5

Triple blind. By and large this album didn’t leave much of an impression on me. I was prepared to give it the 2-star treatment, but the final song “We Float” gave me the same haunting vibes as something by NIN. I think this band is worth additional exploration.

Solid if uneven indie alt rock album. Some high points, skippable tracks, and plenty in between. Not for me but far from the worst thing I've heard. Top tracks: A Place Called Home, Beautiful Feeling, We Float

Definitely not a sleeper

Fine but nothing wowed me

good album.

impressive vocal performances and writing (albeit with lyrics that range from quite good to rather terrible), but it's placed over some of the most boring and predictable rhythm section work imaginable.

Way better than I expected!

Her best album. Takes her scruff Nick Cavish hollerings and adapts them to a more polished, radio-friendly U2 setting therefore making this a good companion album to All That You Can’t Leave Behind. Some slight tinges of Coldplay’s High Speed on This Is Love as well. No successful Radiohead tinges though as the tracks that Thom Yorke mewls through are easily the worst ones.

Big Exit is a terrific opener to the album. I’ve never been to NYC, so I don’t immediately connect with the album emotionally, but nevertheless can appreciate this albums themes. The duets with Thom Yorke are enjoyable.

Very punky!

Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea might be the weakest of the PJ Harvery albums i have looked at so far. It isn't bad but it doesn't really have the cool, hard grit of Dry nor the masterful and layered production that Let England Shake had. Its in it's own spot of doing both the things the other two albums did but not doing either of them as well as the other albums. There are still some good things about this album, the music itself was still pretty solid and PJ Harvey herself did a good job on vocals and songwriting. Thom Yorke also appeared on a few tracks and his presence is appreciated here too. Its still a decent album, it just doesn't hold a candle to the other two PJ Harvey works i looked at. Best Song: One Line Worst Song: Kamikaze

Average alternative album, good background music, nothing popped.

Thom Yorke really did show up in the most random places in the 2000s. He did vocals for a Flying Lotus album a few years later. Him being on two songs here is fine, although I never want to hear someone with Thom Yorke's voice say "lovemaking onscreen" the way he did ever again. Anyways, this album doesn't do much for me. All the songs sound pretty similar and I can't think of much of note with the album.

Burnas canciones

interesting and worth additional listening

Day 16 Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea by PJ Harvey I really like some of her newer stuff, but I’ve never really explored her earlier work, so I was excited going into this. It actually started out a bit boring for me, and I wasn’t sure where it was going. Then suddenly I hear this beautiful voice… and it’s Thom Yorke. No idea how I didn’t know he was on this record. Those tracks are easily the highlights. “This Mess We’re In” especially has that emotional In Rainbows kind of vibe. “This Is Love” is another standout, and overall I think the second half of the album is a bit stronger. That said, I feel like this is one I need to revisit. The songs that didn’t land for me just felt like pretty standard 2000s rock and didn’t really do much. But there’s clearly something here, and I could see it growing on me with more listens. Food pairing? Something simple but a bit elevated. Maybe grilled chicken with a fresh salad, or a light pasta. Feels like that kind of album. Wine pairing? A clean, slightly sharp white like Sauvignon Blanc. Nothing too heavy, but still with a bit of character. Vinyl? Don’t want it. First listen? Yes. Overall 3 out of 5.

Take it or leave it

I didn't know this album when it came out, but it certainly sounds of its time now. I was thinking to myself that there was a definite Radiohead vibe when Thom Yorke's voice appeared as if by magic. That's not a complaint.

It felt like all the pieces were there but this didn't quite click for me.

i love pj harvey occasionally

enjoyable 7.4/10

- sounds like it should be from like. 1978 or 1990 - i was honestly not paying close enough attention to have favorites - rating: 2.5/5

Really nice singer-songwriter album. Cool to hear two PJ Harvey albums back-to-back on the list and hear how much her sound has developed and changed over time. But even mid-career with a more melodic focus, she still rocks pretty hard on roughly half this album. The guitars can get pretty gritty. And she’s got a great rock wail.

I think I liked this second PJ Harvey entry more than the other (the other being "Rid Of Me"), but I'm not too sure. As I listen through I find there are cool moments and ideas, and I like the inclusion of Thom Yorke throughout, but I'm not really finding myself blown away. It's as if these songs keep getting close to being ones that I like and enjoy, but they are far too often missing that one special thing that takes them to the next level. That might sound negative, but it's not entirely. These tracks and this overall sound is good, just not really great for my personal tastes.

I think I really enjoyed the lyrics of this album, and it's story, but I don't think I enjoyed the music? Maybe I wasn't in the mood, I definitely think this is the kind of album that could grow on me but right it feel like not for me

This album has some interesting sounds but is overall pretty forgettable. Some of the earlier tracks have some very unique vocal work, which is technically impressive but not very pleasant to listen to.

I'm gaining a better appreciation for PJ Harvey, but I can't really put my finger on which of these albums I've liked more than the other and why. Also, going to start tracking favorite song on the album Favorite song: Kamikaze

Album 159. Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea (https://open.spotify.com/album/0cJAiqO1obIJQGf4YI31q4?si=OuLjmAjJTBacGH18hSYmLA) — PJ Harvey (2000) Good enough, I like it. Not for regular listening, but I added a lot of songs to playlist for occasional shuffle. I don't get why PJ Harvey is called generation X's Joni Mitchell by some reviewer. But I have to admit PJ Harvey has some similarity to Patti Smith music. 3/5 Liked: — One Line — This Mess We're In — Horses In My Dreams — We Float

realmente me termino gustando, es un 3.5 o 4

Zone out a fair bit. It's meh

didn't expect Thom York to show up all over this album, cool little surprise.

'salright. Def better than average 90's alt rock. Couple tunes sound good even outside their context of time & place. Mostly tho I think this can be left in the 90's. Disagree it's a "must." 2.75 stars

low 3.5.

Good enough

I remember these songs from a while ago.

Like the rest of her albums, totally fine but doesn't hook me and have me coming back for more.

Mercury Prize winning fifth album from Somerset's finest featuring an excellent Thom Yorke duet (especially the second one) and the track 'This is Love' was familiar at the time. It has its grungey moments and PJ Harvey is forever associated with the alternative 90s scene, a darling of the music press form that era but this is a more varied collection overall. a decent listen today.

Expectation: -> Not sure if PJ Harvey is a band or person. After listening: -> Going to take me a while to warm up to this album. No standout songs after a couple playthroughs. Track ranking: Fortune Whores A Place Said Something Float This Is Love Mess Exit One Line Kamikaze Horses Beautiful

Not my type of music

Only listened to half cause I got distracted. Didn't dislike it

3.5, cool album

I do love 90s rock, but there are certain sub-genres that I don't vibe with and after the first couple of songs I thought this was one of them. And partially it was, but there were also some songs that I really liked including "This Mess We're In" and "We Float." That all balanced out to a solid mid.

PJ Harvey's music has never been particularly close to me (so much so that I walked out of her last show in my city), so I listened to this album, considered by many to be her most important, in its entirety for the first time. There was no fireworks display of emotion: it's simply solid alternative rock, sometimes measured, sometimes energetic. There are a couple of hits, and it was a pleasure to listen to. The main drawback is that when Polly switches to a high-pitched voice (let's be honest, it's almost a screech), you really want to turn the record off; fortunately, such moments are few and far between. One journalist disagrees with me, however, and considers the album's only drawback the presence of Thom Yorke — on three songs! It's laughable until you try to imagine his vocals on the other tracks and catch yourself thinking the album sounds like early Radiohead. Let everyone decide for themselves whether that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Slightly disappointing.

Pretty good 90s rock. Not a lot of variety though.

Sympa ça s’écoute bien !

Ehh, it’s fine I guess. Not much going on here for me. Like Nick Cave, I don’t see what the fuss is all about. Seems like music for people whose whole personality is being into stuff you’ve never heard of. 2.5⭐️

2.5....I could go either way on this one, but I was never totally bored so I'll round up.

Pretty chill rock, good background noise. A lot of the album is about love, particularly for New York City. Nice theme, it's just love songs haven't been my thing for a long time. The songs featuring Thom Yorke were probably my favorite along with the final track "We Float."

Another fine album that I’ll never listen to again

pretty good

solid album, after a while the album restarted and i didn’t even realize because most of the songs sound the same favorite song: the whores hustle and the hustlers whore least favorite: beautiful feeling

Intriguing one here. Somewhere in the middle it turns from an abrasive girl-punk album to a very good "girl doom metal" album with less distortion. Then shifts again to "adult contemporary". I wish for more cohesiveness, but it's clear that she's talented and in control of the production process.

I prefer living in the city, but hearing stories from the sea.

There is something about the songs on this album that makes me listen only till the half of the song. Then i get bored and forward to the next

A well-crafted and balanced record that ultimately fails to leave a lasting impression. While the technical details are evident, the "indie" mixing choice to bury the vocals within the production creates a frustrating distance for the listener. Despite a solid collaboration with Thom Yorke, the repetitive structures and the natural reverb of the recording make the overall experience feel professionally executed but emotionally hollow.

2000’s Girl Punk pop loathing bed rot

Good I wish it was grungier tho

Instrumental:4 crisp, clean, pleasant Vocals: 2.5 good voice but not my speed I really liked every song until they started singing.

Some good songs. But her voice can’t carry the slow songs.

I wish I had stronger feelings about this

I don't feel very strongly about this one one way or another. High 3

I remember when this came out. I was a big fan of Dry and (especially) Rid of Me, and I thought this was a bit commercial, bland and 'tasteful' by comparison. I think I appreciate it a bit more now, but I'm not sure if it's just because we've had a crappy run of albums on this project recently. 6.9 Fav track: This Mess We're In Least fav: This is Love (sounds like a toothless version of her earlier stuff)

I listened to this one as background music and I liked it, but didn't love it. Thom Yorke on two tracks is always nice. 7 / 10

Meh. I really like some of PJ Harvey's other stuff, but this is very forgettable.

The album is growing on me as I listen through. I liked You Said Something and Kamikaze. Her voice is cool! The collab with Thom Yorke is cool too.

I dig PJ Harvey but... 4 albums on this list? Why?

re new york

Some great songs

I didn’t like this one as much as Let England Shake, which I got less than a week ago, but it was still a very respectable album. Thom Yorke’s haunting vocals work well on their duets. Fine listen.

Nice. Listenable. Good writing. Good melodies - a little haunting. Could use more drive. Beat. To add heft. 3.

it's fine, don't get the hype tho

Patti Smith vibes at times. Some nice moments and melodies, but none of the songs were really sticking in my mind. Pretty meh overall

Better than her other records I've heard, maybe it's just that I'm getting used to her style. Still just a perfectly okay indie album

Am I a bad feminist if my favourite song was the one with thom Yorke? Appreciate it for what it is but I think it’s not majorly a relisten for me, maybe my issue is I don’t like New York so an album written as an ode to the city potentially never going to appeal to me? There are moments of real enjoyment and brilliance, but I think there are albums of this genre/period that scratch this particular itch more for me.

Really good all the way through, give windows down in the car on a nice day vibe.

Another pretty decent album, with some good songs but it didn’t feel super special. So unfortunately, not loads to say on it, there wasn’t a bad song on the album though to be fair. There were still some highlights with cool instrumentals and depth to the songs, a standout to me was ‘The whores hustle and the Hustlers whore’. Overall, a pretty cool album but not quite enough for me to go into 4-stars.

some good songs

I read in a review that this album would have been perfect if it weren't for Thom Yorke's involvement. The track with Thom Yorke turned out to be the best one on the album. Overall, it's mediocre.

There’s so much great material in the back half of this, but I think the first few songs are really just kinda uninspired and sort of generic. Also I think she sounds a lot like Fiona Apple on a couple of these songs, but that’s not a bad thing it’s just interesting. Favorites: Beautiful Feeling, Kamikaze, This is Love

Absolutely fine. Middle of the road.

Glad to finally know what's up with PJ Harvey. But def not for me.

I'm new to PJ Harvey and just a couple weeks ago, this site fed me her 2011 album, "Let England Shake", which I really liked. So it was hard not to compare this one to that, and I really preferred the later album. This one just didn't stand out. Perfectly listenable, but not striking like the other.

It was ok, nothing to write home about but also didn’t feel the need to skip a bunch of songs

Girl rock

Grungeigt Bra röst Favoritlåt: a place called home

There were some high points. The vocals are reminiscent of Christie Hynde, which I like. But then there is the song featuring the singer from Radiohead. Low point.

I like it. If there was a 3.5 i would rate it 3.5, but, i cant give it a 4. Not that good. Going 3

Didn't really stand out much to me.

Great voice. Like a cross between Lucinda Williams and Pat Benatar.

solid. that song with Thom is incredible

I liked the more uptempo songs in the beginning quite a bit, but when the pace slowed down it kind of lost me. The slow songs at the end are too long and Thom Yorke really didn't need to be featured on here. Still, the regular alt rock is nice enough to warrant it from being bad.

Okay album. Nothing flashy though

I liked it wasn’t wowed but some good singles

Didn’t know what to expect, was pleasantly surprised. Found it to be a decent album

This didn't stand out to me. Nice enough and competent. Nothing very musically different;competent writing performance and singing

pretty good stuff with some poignant lyrics and beautiful vocals, but i can understand why i haven't heard of it.

I’ve always thought about diving into PJ Harvey but never did much, so I was excited to have this assigned. But I’m not sure I see what all the fuss is about here. There’s a few solid songs here, but nothing I found stunning. Just a mix of 90s-ish alt rock that ranges from guitar-driven to singer-singer writers to more atmospheric - and while I enjoyed some, nothing was quite groundbreaking or spectacular.

I didn't love it. There were three songs that I enjoyed. But I have to say that if I had heard this album in 2000 when it was released, I would've been all over it. It's interesting, it's the type of music I was listening to then, but I had never heard of her. Songs: This is love We float A place called home

Very raw, just didn’t connect with it too much

It was ok

I dig PJ Harvey

I thought I wasn’t going to like this. The first half of the album was a little bland and didn’t capture my attention. But the second half of the album was much better than the first, and I loved "You Said Something.”

Fav: A place called home 2.5/5

I had only ever heard the name PJ Harvey, and had no sense going in on what to expect except the cover. I expected femail vocalist over soft rock, but the music was harder and more uptempo than I expected. The rock was energetic and satisfying, and the vocals felt like a wall a sound that mostly worked for me. Curious to know what the rest of PJ Harvey sounds like,

Interesting, still after all those years.

It was okay.

Struggled with this one - just not in to her? Have a feeling she’s not an instant artist so will keep trying

This was weird. I didn't like the first few tracks. I was coming around and then boom Thom Yorke, pretty cool. I am sure I would have loved this if I was slightly older and heard it in its heyday

It didn't grab me as I'd hoped. Lyrically beautiful though. The collaborations with Thom Yorke worked really well and The Hustlers Whore was a standout track.

Definitely a step down from Dry or To Bring You My Love. Polly's voice remains compelling, and there are a bunch of great songs, but it veers a bit too close to stadium rock at times and the Thom Yorke song is a bit yuck.

Was not familiar with PJ Harvey. She might be an artist who grows on you. On first listening this seems to be a good album. Several times of listening might produce a better review but it's not currently feeling very memorable.

I thought this album was good, but I didn’t really connect with the material in any meaningful way. I’ll definitely revisit it in the future and maybe come to appreciate it more then, but for now, I think this sits closer to the mediocre end of good than the great end.

This is a really good album. One thing i noticed is the very long song and album titles. You said something is clear about New York. We float is a great song.

New york based (I assume) indi adult alternative rock lady. Nothing exciting was hoping this would be interesting as I have heard of her. It’s fine not breaking any boundaries here. It’s fine.

ehh, not my kind of music. i can appreciate what it's trying to do, however, it's certainly not for me

I have already listened to two albums from PJ Harvey and I have always felt it was a 3, not too bad and not that good.

Don't love this one as much as her earlier works but its fine.

I would definitely give this a 3.5 but unfortunately that's not available on this site so 3 stars it is. But really nice tempo on this one! Favourites would be "We Float" and "This Mess We’re In". It took me a little while to get used to the vibe so right now least favourite would probably be "Big Exit".

PJ Harvey has been one of the more pleasant surprises of my 1001 Albums journey so far – I wasn't previously familiar with her work, but she was one of the best things about Nick Cave's Murder Ballads album and I ended up really enjoying Let England Shake as well. Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea is a weird one for me because my opinions of Side A and Side B are essentially opposite each other. Side A is just solid early-2000s alternative rock and I found every track to be at least decent (if not great). It was really cool to hear Harvey doing her thing in that era and blending in perfectly! Side B gets a little weird. I'm perfectly okay with weird if said weirdness feels exciting and innovative, but the second half of the album just came across as "boring weird" – I'm sure other people in this community have a few albums they can think of like that. The only track I really enjoyed from Side B was "We Float" and the rest was kind of a slog to get through. Side A would probably be a strong three to a light four for me, whereas Side B would be a decent to strong two. I'll average the two and call the full album a light three. Just two more PJ Harvey albums to go! Highlights: Big Exit, A Place Called Home, One Line, The Whores Hustle and the Hustlers Whore, We Float

An artist who has somehow passed me by over the years, even though I like her style of music, this album reminded me of a slightly mellowed out less punky Sleatter Kinney. And what about 'The Whores Hustle and the Hustlers Whore' as a song title, fantastic. I also enjoyed the good combos with Thom Yorke on backing vocals. Enjoyed this 3 out of 5

A little too hard for me.

Enjoyed this, but still not the biggest PJ Harvey guy

It was good, I think though PJ has been on here a lot and I need a little break or just expecting something more because she is on here so much.

It’s been a long while since i’ve listened to this album. It feels like her BIG commercial Rock ‘N’ Roll moment…available for purchase at your nearest Borders, whereas everything before and after this feels like a little underground secret iykyk. Overall it’s a good record with songs that stand up, like A Place Called Home, One Line, and We Float, but it doesn’t even come close to being my personal fave, which is actually Is This Desire? That’s a stone cold classic.

As a Mercury Prize Winner, this album didn't wow me as much as I was hoping for. It feels too restrained for her, and it just wasn't that engaging. The songs were pretty though, and it's interesting to see her veer into this softer, gentler direction.

Solid 3 - enjoyable

Actually a 3.5

Well made alt rock/jangle pop but nothing really substantial. The collab with Thom Yorke was the best part.

Same as below. 3/5

I didn’t know if I would like this since I didn’t care for the last album but it this was alright.

she's really good, I absolutely loved the way that she kinda of remind me of multiple other female artists that I love, like the singer of the cranberries.

Just not my style

Cool vibe. Cool voice.

Liked. Reminded me of Patti Smith

really liked the songs, nothing stood out a lot tho. chill background music

not the biggest fan of 2000s music but some of the songs were pretty good

mulher linda, maravilhosa.

No comments. Cool,

Was okay

Good songwriter. But, a little too dark even for me. A couple of tunes I really enjoyed earning it a 3.

Enjoyed this album

This is actually very much my kind of music

Not sure why there are so many PJ Harvey albums on here, but this is better than the others i've heard.

Heel tof, moet eens gaan discodiven bij haar

Decent alt rock.

Pleasant enough? I was starting to get bored of it being too samey, and then we randomly get a couple of Radiohead songs

Could have done without Thom Yorke telling me how much he wanted to make love to me tbh. Favourite tracks: A Place Called Home, Horses In My Dreams, We Float

3 out of 5 Chill, mellow 90s coffee house vibes. Some were a wee bit too slow but overall good album.

Music was fine. Vocals were irritating. I'm feeling generous.

I just listened to Let England Shake and I really liked it. I was interested in listening to this one, but it wasn't as good in my opinion. Got more loud and annoying. The addition of Thom Yorke was fun, but didn't really add anything for me. Not my style of album, but fine overall

Cigarette mom rock album that is so 2000s it hurts. Think about the interior of a Gloria Jean's Coffee shop in 2003 and you'd get how this album sounds.

British rock 🤨

Couldn’t say much, but it was nice

Something different but seemed similar to something I’ve heard before

I know this is not *the* PJ Harvey album, but for my first time listening to her I thought it was fine. Nothing blew me away and nothing made me want to stop listening.

Maybe it’s the mix? Cool music and cool voice but she grates my nerves.

While I wasn't entertained the entire album, I did find some songs I enjoyed. It's definitely a genre I'm not familiar with, but I actually enjoyed it a little bit.

Prefer Let England Shake

Interestingly better from PJ Harvey. More relaxed vocals without the grating edge of earlier work.

Very solid album

PJ Harvey definitely has something about her but also feel something is missing too that would make me a proper fan. It's not the garagey straightforward approach I have an issue with, loads of my favourite bands are like that. Think the vocals are really good too. Could do with being a bit more dynamic maybe? It's never very loud or very quiet, kinda chugs along. Definitely a 3, wouldn't mind listening to more but not sure at this point if my interest would grow.

Much preferred the sound on "dry" as opposed to this, although this was still decent. I'm not sure if it's just because I know they are connected, but she reminds me of Nick Cave. I recognised "this is love". 3.5 but 3, as I have dry 3.5 too and preferred that

Definite Patti Smith influences. A lot of songs in 6/4. Trip hop influences we're minimal. The duet with Thom York didn't really work. You said something, whores hustle and kamikaze were highlights.

The album sounds surprisingly little like Radiohead, even though Thom Yorke is on it. I think that is a good thing, because any direct comparison would not do this album any favors. Instead, at some highlight moments it reminds me of Tool a little bit. The rest is grungy sounding Indie Rock from the late 90s.

Pretty good but the name made me hope half the album would be sea shanties. Also the last song made me think I went deaf.

Alright, could see myself having it as background music

didn’t love

Was alright, she sounds like Fiona Apple. Not the biggest fan of this style of music but def better in comparison to other albums I’ve listen to so far.

6 Feel so-so about pj Harvey. Feel like there are other similar sounding people who I enjoy much more but her songwriting just feels less compelling

This is an album I admire more than I enjoy. The songwriting is thoughtful, the performances are strong, and there’s a clear sense of place and intention running through the record. I understand why this is often cited as PJ Harvey’s most approachable work. It’s cleaner, more melodic, and more open than much of what came before it. That said, it never quite pulls me in. There are individual moments that stand out, but as a whole the album keeps me at arm’s length. I find myself appreciating the craft and the atmosphere without ever fully connecting to it on an emotional level. I wanted it to resonate more than it did. It’s a solid, well-made record, and I’m glad I spent time with it. But it lands as a respectful listen rather than something I feel compelled to return to. A clear three stars.

I liked this album, but I do not think that it is something that I would enjoy listening to casually, she is a little bit to slow and even for my taste

I enjoyed listening to this album

Alright
