Reviews (page 8 of 14)
The first song was definitely my favorite since it sounded the most modern but I still enjoyed every song. Crazy to think this album was made in 89 because it sounded like it came from the 60s & 70s. 7/10
These songs are a jam to listen to. Although there weren’t any stand out tracks that really sent me over the top. A solid 7/10
I really like this. The genre and sound varies wildly throughout this album going from a 70s rock to a funky 90s beat. Really great simple production choices that don't overwhelm the tracks here. Some tracks are skippable and the last two songs are good but too long 8/10
This one snuck up on me. Went in thinking “I know a couple of their songs, probably a 2.5 rounded down to a 2.” Gave it the ol’ honest listen, and nope. An easy 4. Very good stuff to me.
Waterfall es floja. Hecha para lucimiento de la guitarra, da la sensación de que le falta algo. Sin embargo también es un buen ejemplo de la diferencia entre una banda de música y un grupo de gente que se junta a tocar.
Slapped
Smooth music. Let’s you think and doesn’t take over.
Wow, that '60s guitar pop influence is strong, even if the '80s shine through. I enjoyed listening, but nothing stood out as a new favorite.
I really liked it!!! Super cool debut album
I liked it! There were a few songs like “pretty in pink” I had heard before.
Some good songs on this album, but found the overall experience overly long and the sound doesn't seem to ever change from one song to another.
I forgot how good this was...seriously!
Never really caught on in the States but I still enjoyed this album
Pretty decent, I like the opening and the songs were all good. Nothing that excited me too much, though.
Liked it
New for me. Enjoyed the messages and rythem
Aika rehtiä ihan perus rockia. She Bangs the Drums GH kappale. Parhaat: Made of Stone, I Am the Resurrection.
The hype about this is a little annoying but goddammit it would have been so much nicer had this band been the "face of the 90s" instead of shitty Nirvana. Melodic, harmonic, actual/real guitar work, dynamics ... I feel like this is an album that can or should appeal to a lot of preferences. If there's any downside there's often a samey-ness to the album in that sometimes it's hard for me to remember or immediately distinguish one song from another. Is that a lack of variety? Might it have to do with the smooth/creaminess of the vocals (that also have a lack of emotion or passion ... he's not great) that have it all blend together? The very-1989 production with a wash of reverb? At any rate that's too much written about nitpicking - this is a great album that while I don't put it near a top 50 of all-time it obviously influenced a whole generation of Britpop to come and was better than pretty much the entire lot of it. 8/10 4 stars.
Nice one
Brilliant album from start to finish, the shimmering guitars, almost shoegaze-esque. Another album I might have to buy. And this was their debut album? It seems like the work of a band more full fledged. High 4.
I Wanna Be Adored is such a fantastic track. Nothing else here is quite as strong, but it's still a solid album.
Very catchy. The one time it all fell into Place for the Stone Roses
I liked it but the second half of it was to similar to the first. I missed the diversity.
Never listened or heard about The Stone Roses, they sound amazing, was listening while doing groceries, in public, this album gave me a really good and nice vibe.
Was surprised by this one. Had previously heard "I Wanna Be Adored" and "She Bangs The Drum". Both these songs are not really my type of music, I feel it is what pretentious people say they listen to (kind of like Arcade Fire for 00s). Anyhow the other songs where really good! Enjoyed the guitar of Waterfall! Not sure why "Don't Stop" is waterfall backwards. Also really liked when the songs picked up energy and pace like the break in "I am the Resurection". Solid 4 from me!
Never listened to this before- loved it. Though of my good friend Nod, and I could see him dancing away to it!!
This album was full of great melodies and layered product. It was a very pleasant listen.
Chill, a variety of sounds. Was never bored with it. Might throw some of these on. Favorite songs: I Wanna Be Adored, Made of Stone
Classic tunes. Was every song a single? Almost. 7/11. This means just about any greatest hits will repeat at least half of this one but for a good reason - the songs are great.
Ok
It’s not really my style, but I get the appeal. It’s a well done album, but nothing groundbreaking to me.
I Wanna Be Adored: There's a lot of reverb in everything, especially the drums sound like played in a big room. Some of the guitars remind me of some song by the Verve. She Bangs the Drums: this sounds so British! Overall, great sounding rock. Hadn't heard much of it before, sounded fresh to me. Interesting guitar parts and sounds.
Oh yes, yes please !
I heard this album for the first time several years ago, and remembered liking it. Listening again, I like it even more. This is such a fun mix of acid-y psychedelic rock, alternative rock, and even a precursor sound to the grungy yet jangly rock/pop that would become popular in the 90s. These guys come out the gate with a debut album and absolutely crush this sound. None of the incorporated sounds are too overdone. It's all very well mixed and makes a pleasant blend. I'm nearly halfway through this project, and I have grown weary of 90s or near 90s British jangle rock/pop. But I am here to say that this album gets it so very right.
bit slow but i liked the later songs in the album where it wasnt just wish wosh singing
Second half is better
I love the 60's of it all. The vibe throughout is very psychedelic and jangly. There are some really interesting production choices that elevate it above just being a retread. The hooks aren't always super catchy, but that's forgivable given how beautiful this sounds
I enjoyed this album. Honestly confused when listening to it that I had never heard of this band before. I would definitely listen to this again. Really enjoyed the guitar throughout.
Solidly enjoyable. Sounds older than 1989, almost mid-Beatles-y. Don't Stop is an interesting one, almost sounds like the music is played backwards.
Rated already
Another band that never really broke through commercially in the US. Enjoyed the blend of melodic, psychodelic, beat heavy, dancy rock. I'm sure Oasis listened to this band a lot.
Sounds halfway between new wave and Oasis (even some psychedelic Beatlesy stuff in “Don’t Stop”). The album sets a cohesive vibe with some nice melodies, but I don’t know if I’d listen to it again. I get why this is on here though.
I quite liked it, and will explore more from this band
Very enjoyable listen, lovely airy guitar pop
I liked it.
Walking home from IDB, to Columbus Circle. Dark and rainy but beautiful. I love this city. Perfect walking album. Will I be doing it from Park? Growing at Bryant Park? Time will tell. Too bad they didn't really do anything else. Learned This is the One is played at Old Trafford before every Man U game. Home and happy.
it's just great rock with a little tinge of 80s production light 4
One I've always wanted to listen too but never got around to. A nice chilled out trippy vibe
Quite pleasant. Which, I'm sure, is exactly what they were aiming for a middle aged bloke to say when they created it :) :) :)
This is a stone cold classic for a reason, they really captured the moment in time and put it on record! I enjoyed the follow-up as well even if it was too many years too late. This had massive bangers on it and some top tier deep cuts, worth a revisit although time and place plays a huge factor in this release so it loses a little something all these years later
a distillation of 60s pop rock through an 80s lense
Gave me beach boys of the 90s vibes. I don't think I was in a good head space for the album yesterday for this album and it probably deserves a second listen from me.
I listened to this right after “the charlatans” and was expecting the same British 90s shtick. But I found this heartwarming and full of toe-tappers. It’s from 1987 but it sounds closer the 2000s indies bands (the shins especially) then the regular Brit rock of the 90s. I was pleasantly surprised
Frábær plata og ótrúlegt að þetta sé fyrsta plata hljómsveitar. Fyrstu þrjú lögin algjör snilld. Ekki margar plötur sem geta státað af jafn sterkri byrjun og svo Fools gold í lokin. Í mínum huga nær hún þó ekki alveg að teljast meistaraverk. Nær því ekki upp í fimmuna, 4,5.
Ziemlich guter Sound
Really interesting sound, fun to listen to
So, so good. Shame we only got 2 albums out of these guys. Both are great, but this one set the bar
Just good
Solid British guitar pop with a little creative edge. Bye Bye Bad Man is a 60s pop tune in the vein of the Beatles or the Kinks but it's got an 80s sensibility to it -- reverby, phaser-ed guitars and a melodic line to the guitar hooks that's clearly informed by Island Records. Waterfall/Don't Stop presents the first real album-oriented creativity of the record. The first presents some guitar ideas (a certain blend of overdrive, slide, blues progression and pocket playing) that they'll revisit to great effect on their 1994 hit, Love Spreads. They transition seamlessly from there to Don't Stop where the drums (Alan "Reni" Wren) and bass (Gary "Mani" Mounfield) start you out in a perfectly stable groove only to be joined by the guitar player (John Squire) with a wicked reverse-delay riff that leads into Ian Brown bringing in his vocal melody with some more reverse-time effects. It's a clever piece of effect/production engagement of an arrangement and something still rare in pop and rock music -- it's interesting and catchy and prominently strange. They show their diversity by repackaging Greensleeves on Elizabeth My Dear and the record does not sag after that point, including some longer and more technically showy tunes later (see the multi-movement, style-hopping, 8-minute jam of I Am The Resurrection). This is a clear pillar upon which the 90s Britpop movement was built -- and perhaps a quality to which it rarely again rose. This beats Blur any day. Give it a go. The Stone Roses are well-remembered by the music geeks of the world but deserve more widespread acclaim than they got in the end. If you've ever wished Oasis were just a better band and better writers, this is that.
Not bad, decent music to have on while working
this good
This was a very pleasant 80s indie rock type thing. I really enjoyed the first couple songs and then the rest blurred into each other but I was still vibing with it by the end. It reminded me a little bit of steve miller band and the smiths but mixed with like 2010s indie rock while still being made to sound like it's from the late 80s. Very unique and very fun.
This album is way ahead of its time. Such an elegant bridge between the tired sounds of the 80s and 60s psychedelia, somehow breeding an early preview of what was to come. Adding to the library.
Very enjoyable album. Fav track: I wanna be adored
I liked this. I felt like I'd heard something else from them, but I guess not. This was good.
Hitazo: I wanna be adored Canción favorita: Made of stone, I am the resurrection Sorpresa: Waterfall Menos favorita: Don't stop
This was great music to work to, good vibes.
2nd listen through added a star
There are 3 songs on here that are great and the rest are a solid 7.5/10. It's good but not great.
I've a lot of satisfaction from this album. The sound is distinctive, vocals atmospheric and it's been an album, or a couple of singles, that I have returned to several times in my life. Good to re-discover.
UK alt rock
Cool
Pretty good britpop, doesn't suck.
Solid Indie Album. Slow start but the later songs made up for the front half.
muy bueno!! aparte le encanta a la victo --> 8/10
I wanna be adored, goedd
Started of pretty boring but picked itself up again after the weird "backwards" song.
pretty great album, never once during listening did I wish that it would end sooner, and each song brought something unique to the album while keeping the overall cohesiveness. really sick funk guitar type sounds, and cool ethereal vocals. One super stand-out track (and the playlist track) is T9- Shoot you down, it has a really nice catchy bassline with the sick funk guitar ontop and a beatles/beach boys type sound on top to create a really addictive track. If someone told me the stone roses were a band from the 60s-70s I wouldn't bat an eye. classic sound with modern melodies. 4/5
Indie rock but old. I like it! Could still be released today if you ask me. The droney vocals could be a little sharper, but it adds to the aesthetic.
Hm never heard of these guys before. Let's see what they're all about. Dig it so far! Has almost a Joy Division sound as far as the music goes but mixed with the voices it gives it a modern day sound like Dope Lemon. Okay the second track does sound more 80s. HA! Elizabeth My Dear was to the tune of Scarborough Fair. This has been an interesting listen. I like the variety of sounds from one song to the next. This Is the One has a good intro. 4 stars
Decent Album with a few classics
Not my cup of tea but this is so far beyond what I’ve heard from similar bands (Oasis, Happy Mondays, Primal Scream). Aye there’s a few fillers in there, but the songs that hit hit well. One of them bands that do sound like they’re having fun and capture a moment. Probably wouldnt return but its very good nonetheless.
Don't think I give Stone Roses enough credit, I think because they are aggressively Mancunian I'm always surprised they make music that sounds like The Cure and put them down a bit. The tone of their songs is always very middle of the road and I think that means they are brilliant songwriters as so many tracks are great. Never listened to a whole album and it was consistently good. Find it hard to get excited about them so can't give a 5 but I understand why they are so popular.
Decent - I recognised many of the songs, and enjoyed listening to the album as a whole. Top tracks: Fools Gold, I Wanna Be Adored, Waterfall.
So is he the resurrection? Or is the devil already in him? Which one is it Ian? Great record though with a lot of pretty iconic tracks on. Getting a 4 as it is quite samey and some of the tracks aren't as good as the big hitters. Highlights: I wanna be adored She bangs the drums Waterfall Made of stone This is the one I am the resurrection Fools gold That's a lot of good tracks! 4.5
Easy to listen to, catchy. I had a tendency to gloss over the lyrics in favor of paying more attention to the melodies and rhythms. "Don't Stop" is unique, played in reverse—not entirely in love with it, but fun. Their overall sound is very enjoyable. Driving beats, nice riffs. Would listen to while on a drive— "Fools Gold" in particular is one of my favorites.
This is a very light and relaxing 80s like rock album. It’s very casual and easy listening while multitasking around the house. The lead singer has a voice similar to the lead singer of The Cure and overall has a “Pictures of You” by The Cure kind of vibe throughout the whole album.
Heard before: yes This record sounds even better now, as there seem to be dreampop/shoegaze inspired bands popping up everywhere. The big secret is that even though this was a tentpole of the Madchester scene and a precursor to shoegaze, it's basically a great jangle-pop record at heart. The Hollies would be comfortable singing a lot of these tracks. And the fade-out of Waterfall into the fade-in for Don't Stop (which is basically the Waterfall track reversed) is one of the coolest sequencing things ever. Top tracks: She Bangs The Drums, I Am The Resurrection, Shoot You Down
great!
A classic
Sweet
Very chilled music, indie rock, great to just tap your feet to and reminisce
Apart album. I Am the Resurrection" is heerlijk.
this was cool
Really really liked this, will relisten many times
Landmark album
Proto Britpop with some surprisingly shoegazey elements. I can fuck with it. A bit middle-loaded (is that a term?), but picks itself back up with the last few songs. I'm an absolute sucker for this kind of music, what can I say. 4/5. Will definitely listen to this again.
Good stuff
Pretty good, 7.5
3.75/5 Here is another band/album that I feel like would be one of my old favourites, but I just grew up in the wrong place. They had beautiful melodies, really catchy songs and I enjoyed the whole vibe of the music. I need to listen again while reading the lyrics cause that could make it a home run for me.
Can't remember ever hearing this band's name or songs, but it sure hits a vibe from the late 80s/ 90s.
A surprise win, missed this first time round but it's a pleasant album
I liked it a lot. Very cool band.
I'm always so skeptical of British music from this time period that I have never heard of, but this album is great. Just a very catchy toe tapping album with banger after banger. Really enjoyed it.
Alright Stone Roses, you got me. Totally expected a nothing burger with this one, having only ever heard the first few tracks. But hot damn, I was surprised. There's so much good stuff happening throughout this album, especially in the back half. I literally looked up from my keyboard while working at the midpoint of I Am The Resurrection. The funky psychedelic breakdown was just sexy. The other later half tracks like Shoot You Down have a great folky pop sound to them that's undeniably catchy.
Dromerige, wel aardig. 3.5
Psychedelic pop rock, sounds a lot like Beach boys Pet Sounds album, didn't like it at first but it grew on me
Overall very solid with summery acoustics
A great swan song to the 80s.
Favourite track of the album She Bangs the Drums.
I liked Made of Stone but didn’t care for the rest
I was very surprised by how good this was. I'll certainly return to this one!
This kind of alternative/jangle british vibe might be one of the only good thing of the late 80s. It was my first listening of this album and I must say that I really enjoyed it. Soothing, creative, luminous and uplifting music.
Skimmed this a bit quick, but definitely enjoying the Madchester sound. Alot more going on than just fools gold. Worth a relisten.
Surprisingly good throughout.
great album, recently got into more of their work. Feels like if you travel trough the greatest generations of music and you just found the center
I wanna be adored. She bangs the drums. Waterfall. Made of Stone. This is the one. All are iconic and for good reason. However, there are too many intermission sort of tracks that drag on this album imo to be able to give this one a 5.
Bon album rock sans flafla
One of my favourite indie albums
4.5
Highly rated by me due to some sentimentality. A Beatles loving guy in early high school who loved college rock and hip hop and everything else but was surrounded by hair metal and AOR. This was great. Shimmery rock with melodic bass. John Lennon singing from a well. Psychedelia. But still great guitar riffs. Every few years when I return to it, I’m always slightly disappointed. That is until I am the Resurrection hits.
This is a great album and some very fine tunes on here. It is however a very hard listen for me. The first day that I heard it, 17 November 1989, someone put on the album when I was back in college and it was a day of some very bittersweet memories. So I still find it hard to listen to it the whole way through. I have to break it down into smaller chunks, and listen to the better known songs that I can sing along to. Otherwise it just becomes a mass of melancholia and ruefulness. And even though Ian Brown may not have great range, those melodies pull you in and I was absolutely a fan of that Madchester movement.
HL: "I Wanna Be Adored", "She Bangs the Drums", "(Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister", "I Am the Resurrection", "Elephant Stone" (bonus track) Nice excursion into jangly, early Britpop
Pretty decent but not enough songs stand out.
Some pretty great songs, some pretty okay, overall pretty good! I’d listen again
Great first impression with the first couple of songs. Right on the end of 80s alt-rock, but it has a retro 60s vibe. You could bump this while hanging out and people would think you're cool. Ohhhh so this is what Oasis was trying to do ok this was a great album to start with. the kind of thing that makes you glad electric guitars exist.
p616. 1989. 4 stars. Manc based Brit pop that taps into 60s jangly guitars and psychedelia. Some classics in here, and fabulous bass playing, but a point deducted for filler, excessively long tracks and the unnecessary wankage that is Don't Stop.
There's 6-7 fantastic tracks here, mostly the ones that open and close the album, I Am The Resurrection being the obvious highlight of those. There's some filler here but still a very good record.
Better than average Brit-Pop, first time listener and I enjoyed what I heard. Of course, I've heard of The Stone Roses, but never got around to listening to them and I can understand why fans and critics like them. Poppy, infectious and even a dose of classic rock in their sound, which exceeded what I was expecting.
Get an Indie vibe from this album, last track has a great groove, had potential to be even better. 3.5 but ill round it up
Liked this album! It kind of reminded me of the My Bloody Valentine musical style but cleaned up and more poppy
Odd that this band doesn’t have the US following that bands like Oasis have since they sound very similar but have a brighter sound.
I wannaaaa beeeeee adoooooreeeeeeed
4/5 Really Good
Lot of good classic songs here. one of those albums where you can clearly hear the influence it had with basically every 90s alt rock album.
Easily enjoyable. Though the vocals and music kind of lose each other in places, it has a cool alternative rock vibe that has UK flavor and enjoyable melodies.
I wanna be adored Made of Stone I am the resurrection Fool's gold Excellent debut album Je pense que second coming est encore mieux et qu'il aura les 5 étoiles
Really nice! 80s but not too 80s, a little bit of a psychedelic feel in places, just overall fun
Great album. Some great tracks and beautiful guitar and vocals.
first listen there's something about this i really like
I have never purposefully put this album on and listened to it front to back. How late I was to the party. Perfect for a Friday afternoon. 4.5
Fun fact: the first time I ever partook in the ding-dang-diddly-do I was listening to Fools Gold in a tent, packed to the rafters with other 15yo’s (some of whom were known locally as “Biggy”, and “Jimmy Barrett”) eating chocolate digestives. Never in my life had a biscuit tasted so good… and never has a biscuit tasted as good since. The bangers are ubiquitous, and my word do they SLAP. But the deeper cuts don’t quite nudge this into 5 territory for me, sorry chaps.
Chilled outt
Never clicked with the stone roses before. Guess I needed to sit there and listen to a whole album to realise how good they are.
4,5 dobar
Very smith-esque and I approve of this band
Liked it on the first listen. I think I'll listen to it again. There's a rather unique, ethereal quality to it. I didn't get around to listening to it again today -_- But I can see myself listening to this album again in the future.
Fav tracks: Don't Stop, Made of Stone, Shoot you Down
Klingt gut, 4/5. Ohne Stone Roses, kein Oasis
8/10
8/10. This was pretty enjoyable, but nothing jumped out at me as being just incredible.
I like a lot of this, it’s just so jangly and British. Maybe worth another listen after I’m done with this list. 7/10
Breathy and pop-ish, a little jazzy/funky (especially Fools Gold) - really like me this one!
v good
Musicians from northern England are the most egoistical cunts to grace the industry but damn do they produce some fine music.
Really great first album and the Stone Roses influenced so many bands that followed them. This isn't quite the perfect album, but deserves placement in this book because of the musicality and the influence.
Not bad I'll put it in the needs second listen someday list
Great name - really dug this album. It seems ahead of its time for when it was released. I didn't see the date before listening to it, and I had guessed late 90s. But, it is also reminiscent of the British Invasion era (especially the Beatles and the Animals). I guess that adds to its appeal. Waterfall was the stand out track for me, but I enjoyed almost all of them.
Takes the standard, overdone Britpop formula and stands it on its head with washed-out, heavily spatial sound design and melodies that break far beyond the usual Brit mold. Strikes an impressive balance between the rock canon of the time and an almost proto-shoegaze with its dense reverb and delay on nearly every track. Found myself enjoying even the mandatory sappy Brit ballads on this one – though definitely the weaker elements of the LP's songwriting, anything is digestible if you wrap it in enough overdriven guitar and reverb.
Good stuff.
pretty cool but idk if i really see all the hype
I've heard of them a lot but never really given them a shot before. This is really cool. You can definitely hear the 60s influence but it does enough to stand out as its own thing and give a modernized (for the time) sound.
Nice album. Fools gold looks so much different from the rest.
Listened twice in a day. Really liked them.
Highlights: "I Wanna Be Adored," "Sugar Spun Sister," "Made of Stone," "Fool's Gold" Very prescient for an album that leans so heavily on its influences, but maybe that's why this seems to set set the standard for the '90s pop rock sound before the decade even got here. The Las wouldn't show up for another year. "I Wanna Be Adored" could be an anthem rock single from any of the subsequent 30 years with the pentatonic riff floating on delayverb over the driving bass and kick. After that though, it's more strictly '90s. Most of it does sound like it's already figured out the next decade as a revision of the '60s for the amen break and '80s effects. Even some of the dated stuff still hits hard, like the super-flanged wurlitzer-sounding riff in the jam of "Fool's Gold". Drags and tries too hard in some parts like "I Am the Resurrection" and "Don't Stop," but absolutely succeeds in synthesizing contemporaries like U2 and Pixies to nail a modern revival of classic sounds.
Really enjoyed listening to this, lots of nostalgia in the sound of this. I definitely hear parallels to rock songwriting of the 60s like The Zombies, Mamas & the Papas, etc but with an updated production style from the 80s. Hearing a breakbeat in the opening bars of Fools Gold was also a fantastic segue into what the 90s had in store for music. * I Wanna Be Adored * Bye Bye Bad Man * Made of Stone * I Am the Resurrection
Very meta album and one of my all time top 100. She Bangs the Drums and Made of Stone are bangers. I Am the Resurrection is an awesome penultimate song. If I'm rating objectively I'd give it a 4.5 just bc it drags at some parts.
sneaky 4/5
4/4
I love that I listened to this on New Year's Eve while quietly walking home. It has such a ravey vibe while also sounding lonely. It was really nice and spacey. I may not listen to it much again but I really liked it, especially the track Waterfall.
Felt like the impetus for that 90’s/00’s alternative sound that I remember growing up with. Favorite songs include (Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister and Made of Stone. Glad this album got out on my radar!
Highly inluential album with a string of stone-cold classics in it. Maybe it is slightly overrated, but you can't deny there's something iconic in such a sound, which looked into the past to better embrace the future... Number of albums left to review or just listen to: more than 700, I've temporarily lost count here Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: approximately a half so far (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: a quarter Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): the last quarter
Very instrumental focused made in 89 but sounds like something straight out of the 60’s
I love The Stone Roses, and frequently thank Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels for introducing me to them.
So much depth, some really pretty moments too. Had never listened all the way and loved it more than I thought I would.
banger album she bangs the drums is the best song
3.5/5. This was fine. Some songs were good, others not so much. Overall, a little above average, but nothing amazing going on here. Something I did not expect to come out of 1989, sounds kind of like 2010s indie, so that was neat.
Very 80s, but enjoyed having it in the background
I'd forgotten I'd got this on cd. My bro gave it a couple of Christmas ago and actually I think I thought it was the greatest hits... Which I guess says it all. I was underwhelmed then, but this time was a good listen.
Good surprise. Awesome bass player. I wanna be adored I am the resurrection
Favorite song: I Wanna be Adored
Helped define an era in the UK. They burnt brightly, but unfortunately it didn't last.
An iconic album although sometimes self indulgent and a little long winded. Moments capture a moment and mood that typifies the Manchester rave indie phenomenon going on in the early 90s. It's also an enjoyable album, upbeat, undeniably cool but loses its way too often to be a true bona fide gem.
I never really listened to this album when it came out but was familiar with a couple tracks. I got turned on to it by a friend years later and it got heavy in the rotation for a while. Great album, great band, really accessible.
Good from start to finish. Worth another spin for sure.
I enjoyed a lot most of the tracks
3rd October 2022 Listened during the day of Jen’s birthday. Watched house of the dragon in the evening then had an early night! A very cool album, while the guitar sound is epic, the record is driven by the bass. Not sure I can love the vocals but overall thought it was great.
stone roses - self titled (1989) notes - Early British dreampop band - blend of catchy pop structures and conventions with fuzzy reverbed guitars and drums - helped to solodify some of the things that would become dreampop genre staples fav - she bangs the drums - high energy and catchy while still full of crunchy guitars and interesting effects usage - kinda sounds like the friends theme song a bit least fav - bye bye bad man - sounds like they had about 25% of a song that they stretched out 4/5 - had never listened before this but i could see myself checking out other albums from them
Iets aan de lange en bombastische kant, maar veel van wat er op dit album staat vind ik echt heel tof!
Alternative. 90s
I’ve been aware of, but never actually heard, The Stone Roses for some time. They sound almost exactly as I expected them to: swirling psychedelic, guitar rock. It’s an awfully pretty record that alternates between jangly Byrds-esque guitars, huge guitar hooks, fuzzed out 60’s psych, and experimental dance music. Great record.
Some classics and a few duff tracks. A strong debut that showed plenty of promise, it's a shame they never realised it.
She Bangs the Drums - Waterfall - I Wanna Be Adored ⭐ - Bye Bye Bad Man Menos Favoritas - Don't Stop Calificación General: 8.9 (⭐⭐⭐⭐)
I thought it was good! Completely unknown to me previously. Fairly relaxing
A classic
This is a surprising type of sound to hear in the 80s, very cool. Psychedelia, 60s style rock, but it's definitely got a more modern sound to it. In some sense it reminds me of some prog rock, where they have a focus on the instrumentation that really improves the experience. All of the songs are good, but it feels better for the experience and I wonder how I'll feel about the individual songs after I give them a couple listens. I'm stuck between giving this one a 4 or 5, but I think I will settle for 4.
actually pretty good me: likey
Pleasant surprise!
Another band that, like Boston, had a ton of potential with their first (self-titled) album but had their career trajectory stifled over squabbles with the record companies over future albums. However, Boston managed to sneak in a second album before their big squabble/lag and did pretty well with their "comeback" album. The Stone Roses were mostly forgettable on their second album, and by the time they got around to it Oasis had elbowed their way in as everyone's UK and Manchester darlings. Also, Boston's debut album is a 4 if not a 5; the Stone Roses debut album is a 3, maybe a 4. Funny because I was reading some of the Wikipedia write-up and saw one UK critic's comments that pretty much match how I feel - first three songs good and then a "right barrel-load of shite afterwards". That's a bit harsh because Made of Stone (track 8), This is the One (track 10), and Fools Gold (final track 12) aren't bad. But they aren't as good as the first three (I Wanna be Adored, She Bangs the Drums, and Waterfall are pretty kick ass) and the other tracks, including the middle third of the album, are kind of garbage. Some folks need to give their heads a shake because these guys are not as good or even as trail blazing as they were made out to be. I'd say they took their sound from bands like New Order and the Jesus and Mary Chain and they were similar to a lot of other artists from that scene in the late 80's and early 90's (I'm not mentioning it again, see earlier posts). Whatever that UK sound, it died out pretty quick though it was reimagined in the 90's brit pop/rock, which was better than this sound. Still, it's a pretty cool album. Just cool your jets talking about it like it was the second coming of the Beatles.
bem bom o sonzinho
Better than expected. Fools Gold is still by far my favourite song from them, but there were some other pretty good tracks as well.
👍👍
4.5
Shoot you down had some cool ass dynamics.
Loved it. Sonically thick, lush sounds throughout, easily danceable and relistenable. Sounded like the precursor to Oasis' Wall of Sound.
4.5 for sure, one of the better unsung albums of history and ushered in an new era in music.
Definitely their best album. 'I wanna be adored' and 'Fools gold' are great tracks to top and tail the album. New found appreciation for The Stone Roses and a good album to work too.
I like this album a lot 4
Beneath the hype is a pretty decent album.
3.5, will round up today. The album definitely grooves but not sure if it did anything unusual or out of the ordinary.
The jangly guitars and lush harmonies of the 60s meet the slick production of the 80s, and the marriage is blissful. To produce a debut this confident and fully-formed is rare indeed, but the Stones Roses manage with flourishes of true brilliance.
Never heard of these guys before - not a bad album. 7/10.
A less depressing Smiths Beach Boys meets late British Invasion
I love this kind of English rock. Great guitar. Chill, and definitely an album I could have on in the background just to pass time. A lot of it feels like music that would’ve been used in the moody teen dramas of the late 90s & early 00s, and I can dig that vibe.
Really enjoyed the dreamy/mesmerizing rock beats. Unfortunately I found the lyrics to be bland and way too repetitive which brings down the album just a touch. I can see myself listening to this passively as background music because the instrumentals are just so good. Definitely not an album I'll forget about.
Solid
Really good, enjoyed a lot
For what these guys were trying to do, I think they nailed it. The variety of sounds is great, and they're woven together well, giving each track a well-polished feel.
Much better than expected
the sheer brilliance of the music overcomes the fact no album with Ian Brown singing should be five stars, or even three.
Wow, does this albums start off super strong. 'I Wanna Be Adored,' 'She Bangs the Drums,' and 'Waterfall' are all fantastic songs that set a strong tone for the rest of the album. The other songs don't quite live up to what was set up, but they're still great to have on. This is one of those albums that introduces you to a band and makes you wonder, "How have I never heard of these guys before?" I don't know if the rest of The Stone Roses albums are of the same quality, but I will definitely be listening to more from them in the future.
Pretty good listen. Loved a lot of the tracks especially Waterfall and it's subsequent track: waterfall in reverse. Was caught off guard but was actually enjoyable. I thought the bass throughout the album was top notch
Really solid Brit pop album, though I prefer Blur more. -1 star because they’re from Manchester and being from Manchester isn’t a personality
I really like this a lot. I only know I wanna be adored and Fools Gold, but i can see the rest of the album growing on me.
You can taste the decades of Brit pop that ooozed out of this record
Jeg tar denne med videre. Behagelig. Alt var behagelig. Trenger mer modning før jeg får det til å sitte i rockefoten, fistpump-armen eller sangstrupen. Good stuff.
This is really, really good. One of the best we've had, comfortable 4 and not far off a 5. It flows really nicely (like a proper album), there are quite a few really good songs on there (it'd still be a decent album even if you only had 2 out of I Wanna Be Adored, She Bangs The Drums, Waterfall, Made of Stone, and I Am the Resurrection, let alone all 5), and there's not a lot of filler. It does dip a bit briefly in the middle (the main culprit being the weird reworking of Scarborough Fair into Elizabeth My Dear), but not a lot. Without a couple of those tracks, it'd be close to a 5; if you tightened it all up and took 30s to a minute out of most of the tracks, it'd comfortably get a 5.
At times soothing, at times exciting, but more "blah" than I prefer. The songs "Waterfall" and "Shoot You Down" really caught my attention.
Not an album I was that much familiar when growing up but I know how influential it was. I like it generally but find it a bit dragging tbh. I am the resurrection is a timeless classic tho
If I was still in high school this album would be on my 'Oldies but Goodies' playlist Definitely would play in the background or something, wouldn't listen to it religiously
Great album and I always forget it came out in 89.
Nice indie pop album. You can hear how the Stone Roses influenced future musicians.
Classic
Some great songs
I thought this was great, obviously knew quite a bit of Stone Roses and this album as a whole was a lot less heavy than some of the other stuff I am familiar with. I was mostly introduced to them when I visited my cousin in Wester Australia, and we had a great time on a road trip blasting his fave Stone Roses songs in his big 4x4. Great times
Strong record from the indie rock movement of the late 80’s college radio scene. 10 minutes of self indulgent Fools Gold can be forgiven.
Stonerrock, maar zeer toegankelijk. Goed album
I remember enjoying it but then forgot to review so now I have nothing interesting to write here.
Liked it but not madly in love with it, great sounds really liked the instrumentals in the album, dare I say fantastic. Although, the vocals from Ian could be a hit and miss, sometimes it suits the song very well but other times it feels out of place
angsty and nice
For this album, we have New Order to thank. Not only did the Stone Roses get their start in New Order's club The Haçienda, but they would be heavily inspired by New Order's alternative dance innovations. Mixing this together with neo-psychadelic sounds and some jangle pop from the 60's, and we have the Stone Roses' debut album. With this new sound in their hands, The Stone Roses, alongside Happy Mondays, would be at the forefront of the Madchester genre, a precursor to britpop which would flourish later in the 90's. In the meantime, The Stone Roses would be releasing music that is rhythmically non-stop and upbeat while pulling from sound textures from the 60's and 70's. It's uniquely British, but still pretty good! Not quite for me I think but I can still appreciate quality music when I hear. Also of note, the official release didn't have Fools Gold which is fantastic song, but streaming services will include it at the end so I'm considering that version to be the official one.
Nice. Good memories of this first time around. Groovy and still fun times from the baggies
Gostei muito, só conhecia a banda de nome. Vou pesquisar mais. Melhor música: Fools Gold
Pretty darn good, although they leaned HARD into the "remastered" nonsense.
Solid. Didn't know much about this band besides the jokes about the second album.
First time hearing this album. And it's very good! This is one of those albums that I'm glad I'm doing the generator for, making me listen to music that I somehow missed.
Man that was some proto Britpop fun
I had heard "I Wanna Be Adored" many times and always liked it, yet for some reason, I don't think I listened to much more of their music. I'm glad this album came up in my rotation. This band is really good. Love their sense of groove, which they interweave wonderfully with nice pop hooks. To me, they seem to include a fun sense of pop and rock composition without getting snarky or cynical about it. Snarky and cynical can work in some music, but at times I must confess I kind of roll my eyes a bit (or a lot) when I hear the same themes on that front. There are some outstanding vocal harmonies here, and the musicians play so well. Everything comes together nicely, production is solid, and it's overall rather enjoyable. "Fool's Gold" is super-fun; such a great track with which to end the album. Nicely done!
Achei bem legal. Ouviria de novo.
This is first time listen for me. I thought the album was arranged beautifully and studio engineered to perfection. Wasn't necessarily in love with the techno rock rave song but the rest of the album is exceptional. They sound they have musical influences from everybody. I heard Morrisey, The Beach Boys , Pink Floyd and others. Really enjoyed and will be doing a deeper dive on the The Stone Roses.
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: I wanna be adored, She bangs the drums, Made of stone
I thought this album was cool. It definitely mirrors a lot of what other alternative rock groups were doing in the 80s, and as a consequence it doesn't stand out as much as some of the other early alt-rock albums I've listened to, like Surfer Rosa. Still, they made a lot of cool choices on this album. 4/5
Onhan tässä hyviä tarttuvia renkutuksia. Oikeestaan melkeen kaikki biisit on hyviä.
Muy buen disco
Eigentlich 3 aber wegen "i wanna be adored" ein mehr
Great album
I hadn't purposely listened to The Stone Roses before, but I really enjoyed this album. They're a new staple.
This could actually be between a six and an eight. I really don't know. I'll very likely listen to it again though.
I think this album was a big step forward in music at the time. It continues to have some appeal but a lot of the songs just don't seem as innovative as I imagine they must have been back then. Still a very solid work, but I just don't see it as belonging in the upper echelons that the critics seem to place it.
Classic. So many hits.
Classic
Excellent. I think there are some stone-cold classics on this album. An easy 4.
Kind of a fun, trippy album from the late 80s! It actually sounds a lot more modern than that to me.
Great stuff, oasis but with more of a kick to it
8/10
-Very cool psychedelic Beatles-esque jamming on sitar and echoed/reversed vocals on "Don't Stop" -"(Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister," "Shoot You Down," and "This Is the One" all get interesting -Becomes a cool jam in "I Am the Resurrection" -Has some really cool bits but is pretty mellow in the other tracks. Overall pretty solid
This album has good sound, intresting story and great cover.
I always slag off The Stone Roses because of their reputation in Manchester despite only having one album. But this happens to be that album and it is a damn good one to be fair and very iconic
I've always thought there was a disconnect between the Stone Roses' lad-rock following and the kind of music they actually made. I also thought they were largely overrated - just accomplished musicians with a few good tunes and a few dull ones. That may still be true, but I'm happy to concede that this is a strong album. I still think I Wanna Be Adored and I Am The Resurrection are clear stand-outs but the jangly stuff in between has grown on me too.
Downloading for later
Pleasureful.
9/10
very nice, had some really chill songs
Its good, but not for me
Very nice smithsy psych
I've listened to this extensively in the past. Remastered version is very mellow and strangely paced but has some excellent songs - she bangs the drums and I am the resurrection are highlights, and fool's gold is a brilliant song. Good start, even if it is unlikely to become one of my favourites.
I was surprised by how much I liked this one - it's like a little psychedelic alt-rock adventure. My favorite track on the album, "Fool's Gold", has a funky almost trip-hop beat that carries it along, and it's very nice. I have a feeling that I'll be coming back to this album.
banger
Classic and seminal, echoing influences without ripping them off in a way Oasis completely failed to do. Album tracks innovative and pleasing. A long overdue full listen.
Listened 27/9/21
Catchy tunes with lots of hooks, jangly guitars, groovy rhythms - what's not to like? I enjoyed this quite a bit. 4 stars.
Man- my love for late 80s early 90s alt rock continues
U top 5 najboljih brit pop albuma, alo. Dakle vrh album, žao mi je što mi nije skroz savršen, ali je dosta blizu. Stvarno kvalitetan album, odličnih pjesama i jedan od glavnih pokretača ovakvog žanra u Britaniji.
Started getting a bit samey towards the end, but still quite good musicianship. I felt as though the band were really a band, if that makes any sense. I enjoyed it for the most part.
So influential and solid
Great music to cross-stitch to. Originally, I was going to say relaxing, but not a sleep sort of relaxing. Then I reflected upon the album and realized everything was fairly upbeat, but not in-your-face up beat. All in all, great all-around album for an all-around average sort of day/task.
First album of the journey for me. This should be fun if they're all half as good as this.
Great album that marked the start of an era! Really enjoyed it
This album manages to bring together a host of influences in a coherent and interesting way. I can hear Beatles, the Smiths, Joy Division, dance sounds and more in this album. The 'Madchester' scene of which the Stone Roses were a key player, was born of the indie dance scene fused with psychedelia and pop sounds. This movement found mainstream success but started to decline in the earlier nineties as Britpop and Grunge became favored.
Great Britpop! Cool sounds and fun songs, unique while also a tribute to the 60s.
Gran disco, grandes canciones, grandes arreglos, grandes solos, etc. A los Stone Roses los conocí hace ya varios años por una amiga muy querida y siempre es grato regresar a ellos. Highlights, porque no hay skips: "I Wanna Be Adored", "Don't Stop", "Made of Stone" y "This Is The One". De las últimas dos, disfruto mucho sus solos. 9/10
Manchester more like Madchester am i right?
Fantastic debut and the bulk of their greatest hits
Awesome tunes. Felt rocky but also with kind of brother bear feel??
Favorite tracks: I Wanna Be Adored, Bye Bye Bad Man, Made Of Stone, I Am The Resurrection, Fools Gold Least favorite tracks: Don't Stop
Really liked it. Will explore more 80s brit rock. um favorite track was This is the One. Least favorite was Don't Stop. Will probably listen to this one again!
"I Wanna Be Adored" started out like I was listening to Pink Floyd. "She Bangs the Drums" gives me Beach Boys vibes. Beach Boys might not be right but it's a band I know I've heard. "Waterfall" is really good, I like it. Probably a good concert song. The beginning of "Don't Stop" sounds like it would be from Aerosmith. "Bye Bye Bad Man" would have been good in Legion or HIMYM. "Elizabeth My Dear" who is this, Garfunkel and Oates? "(Song For My) Sugar Spun Sister" not much to say but I liked it. "Made of Stone" was reallllly good. I like this one. "Shoot You Down" Beach Boys vibes again? "This Is the One" it sounds familiar but I don't know where I would've heard it. OH! Previous songs reminded me of a cross between Beach Boys and The Cherries. That's what it was. "I Am the Resurrection" without listening to the lyrics closely enough, is this Christian themed? "Fools Gold" long, but good. I liked this album. It's not what I typically listen to but I liked it.
3.5 if I could. But after a second listen it tips over to a 4.
