Reviews (page 7 of 14)

Classic. One of the first albums I bought.

4.5 for me. Love this album. Great guitar playing.

Sounds effortlessly cool. A few songs here that I knew but didn’t know where they were from until now. Interesting all the way through. Can’t think of skips. Iconic guitar riffs

Not my thing but I can see why it was massive

The album that launched a million other CDs. I remember this was almost the "test" release for new fangled CDs (a bit like "Journey into Stereophonic Sound" a 1950s record that my dad had). As such pretty much every one I know bought it. Stands the test of time. All good songs. Still a bit sick of it though.

Alright

Get another album that took me back into my childhood. If you were an MTV era kid, you definitely remember money for nothing. It’s by far their biggest hit as a band, but it’s probably the fourth best song maybe fifth on this album. The song Brothers in Arms means a lot for those who serve, fought and protected. Mark Knopfler is regarded as one of the greatest guitar players that have ever lived according to many lists. His accolades are well deserved. lol lol

Once signed a petition on Facebook urging to support radio stations to play the f slur version of Money for Nothing when I was in grade 8. Not my proudest moment and my friend mentions this to every person we meet.

i forgot

i have thoroughly enjoyed this album, though some of the song were much longer than necessary my favorite was probably the title track

Great album, feels a bit all over the place but still very enjoyable. A couple of songs were top tier but the fillery ones dragged the album down. Still a solid four nonetheless. Best song: Brothers in Arms Other highlights: Money for nothing, Why Worry 4 stars

So far away is really nice, enjoyable guitar

Gives the same vibe as Lobo

This was one of those albums, the equivalent of coffee table books, which was everywhere in the mid ‘80s, everyone had a copy. It is better than that but not my favourite Dire Straits record. It’s well produced, sounds excellent, and some of the songs are very good but there is nothing on hear to match the best on “Love Over Gold” or “Making Movies” but the second side is better and I could listen to the Hammond organ outro on the title track over and over.

So good! Money for nothing is an unreal song! Surprised they haven't adjusted the F* bomb though... It did go a bit south from there, but not by much. Solid 4!

Really enjoyable. First four tracks are all time bangers. The album does slow down and go in some different places. Enjoyed the guitars. I once helped a man make 2 acts in a feature film in which he would try to get Mark Knopfler to play a show with his band. He tried and tried and there was no reply from Knopfler and his movie fell apart. It was a hilarious film though. Anyways, I didn’t know this band was British. They do not sound that way. Why is that? Are they trying to sound American? Maybe, maybe not.

The homophobic slur is regrettable, especially that it was on the best song. Still a rock solid album. In my opinion, their best. They never topped themselves after this.

Probably the most front loaded album of all time. The first side is absolute perfection, but it tapers off on side two which is a real shame. I have nothing to say about this that hasn't been said already, so I'll just call out that So Far Away is one of my favourite songs of all time.

Who gives a shit if it's crazy front loaded, the 'weaker' songs in the latter end are still nice and I would say are better for calmer easy listening during the long stretches of instrumentals on some songs

The tail end of this album really tapers so damn hard man. Need to be drunk to fully enjoy it.

Wasn't sure what time expect at first, caught on pretty quick. Great album 8/10 Fav tracks - Money for Nothing, Walk of Life, Why Worry?, Ride Across the River, The Man's Too Strong, Brothers in Arms

Good shit

Interestingly, the two most popular hits from this album are my least favorite. The remainder are all consistently repeatable.

A great album I listened to a lot when I was a teenager. Looking back now, I think the two biggest hits are the weakest links. Walk of Life is okay, but Money for Nothing is a bit embarrassing now. All the slurs don't hold up so well. The title song, though, is still amazing. I can't seem to ever tire of it.

Solid album overall with a couple great songs!

Man, seeing the reviews, it seems people either LOVED or HATED the album. Hate seems pretty undue, as it is a spectacular album. Although the vocals are essentially just a pop-ish Bob Dylan impression, which isn't everyone's cup of tea, throughout the album the guitar work CRUSHES it. Money for Nothing, lyrically, is terrible, and yet the iconic guitar and drums makes it a smash hit. Then you have songs like Brothers in Arms, where it lyrically shines, musically conquers, and Knopfler's somber, raspy, singing actually ties it altogether. Then of course you just have to give credit where credit is due when it comes to cultural importance, with the rise of CDs, MTV, and Dire Straits's impact on the game. Bravo.

this album goes crazy. i love how the songs are either 2 and a half minutes or like 6 minutes. i would give this a 4.5 if i could. melds genres so well and has some really impressive geetar

4 of the tracks are phenomenal (So Far Away, Money for Nothing, Walk of Life and Brothers In Arms) but the rest are just okay.

Ok trying to get back into things. I love Dire Straits. I knew a lot of their songs because they, for some reason, appeared in a lot of 90s teen comedies when I was a kid.

This is a great album with a bunch of hits. I missed Dire Straits early on in life, but these guys rock man.

I never really liked this album. I was 8 or 9 when it came out so I heard all the adults in my life play it all the time. The big hits got played out years ago. The gems are the non singles. It stands the test of time

My folks are big Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits fans and I am high key nostalgic for this album - classic tunes!

This is an album that I’ve always been interested in but never gave it a deep dive. I’ve always liked the popular tracks, but now that I’ve listened to the whole thing I can see why it is so highly regarded. Dire Straits has a sound that is all their own, of course led primarily by Mark Knophler’s signature guitar twang. Not every track is a standout favorite for me, but generally I really like it and it’s a solid listen.

• 4/5 • Poppier than I prefer from Dire Straits, but solid tracks throughout

Nice sound. The best part of the album was definitely the songs I already knew.

Album as a whole is give it a 3.5 but the fact it has Money for Nothing makes it 4 at least.

yes sultans of swing!

Juste exceptionnel. Un son de gratte emblématique pour un album super bien construit et équilibré. Quel régal. Coups de cœurs : - Money For Nothing - Walk of Life - Why Worry - Ride Across The River - Brothers In Arms (et autres...)

making movies will always be their best, and would rather listen to their self titled or even communique/love over gold over this, but it's still nothing to be sniffed at best song: money for nothing worst song: one world

Good dad rock. Classic.

Have listened to this album many times. This is Dire Straits at their most crowded pleasing. Filled with hits and hooks and produced with an 80s sheen, this was their best selling album. There are a lot of great songs on the album, and no obvious missteps. Knopfler's guitar work is integrated with the songs so are at first a bit more subtle than their other albums. A really great album, although probably not my favorite Dire Straits album. But it was significant at the time and most of it still sounds great today. If it doesn't transcend to the level of classic, is just a little short of that. Strong 4 stars.

Easy listening. A couple of big hits. Mark Knopfler's call and response guitar playing is as beautiful and clean as ever. I'm saving the five stars for their eponymous album though.

The song Brothers in Arms is an all-time favorite rock song of mine, and in great company here: ✅✅✅✅ So Far Away ✅✅✅✅ Walk of Life ✅✅✅✅✅ Brothers in Arms As a West Wing fan, I will attest that the use of Brothers in Arms in the Season 2 finale brought me to tears. Would almost recommend that people watch TWW on the strength of that episode alone.. Incidentally, my mother bought the Brothers in Arms CD around the start of her prolific pancake-making era. It always timed out that Walk of Life was playing when the batter hit the griddle, and 20 years later, the song still makes me snacky

Always had a soft spot for this. It’s one of those albums you listen to constantly as it’s one of the 3 cassettes your mum and dad in the car. THAT SAID, I still think this slaps. Money for Nothing has one of the greatest rock intros and riffs (and videos) of all times. Fond memories of air drumming with Glenn in his front room. RIP buddy. So Far Away from Me is a gentle little opener with a nice melody, Walk of Life is pure 80’s pop, and Your Latest Trick will always remind me of Rob Hanley getting off with a bird in his front room the suave cunt. Instant knicker dropper. Real James Bond stuff. Very much an album of two halves this though. Why Worry is alright, but Ride Across the River sounds like some background music from Lethal Weapon 2. Riggs playing this as he makes love to a beautiful woman in his static caravan. The rest are a bit pish, but Brothers in Arms (the song) is decent enough. Best tracks: So Far Away from me, Money for Nothing, Walk of Life

My dad played this album a lot in the car when I was a kid. Very fond memories

First half is packed with classic songs. Slows down then ends with a great tune

I saw this tour so I have a soft spot for this album but it got soooo much airplay that I don’t like it as much as I used to. Great recording though.

I like it

8.4 ★★★★

I love Matk Knopfler's guitar playing, but has never really liked his voice, but there are quite a few songs on here that are undeniably great, especially "Money for Nothing", "Walk of Life" and "Brothers in Arms". 4 stars

Some great stuff, but occasionally sounds like a classic rock band trying to navigate the mid-80s. "So Far Away" and the title track are the best tunes. 4 stars.

Lost my write up. Keen to listen to this one again. fun singles. 4.5/5

Pretty amazing at the start, although it fizzles out into mii maker music near the end.

The four well known hits: "So Far Away", "Money For Nothing", "Walk Of Life" and "Brothers In Arms" plus the unique guitar-play make it a really strong album. Some weaker numbers like "Why Worry?" and "One World" cost them the five stars for me.

When I saw this pop up, I started singing "Money For Nothing" immediately lol. I forgot this also had "Walk Of Life". I am pretty sure I've never heard this whole album, and only what was on MTV or the radio as a kid. Overall this is a really good album, and one of the better English groups I've listened to from this list recently that wasn't named The Beatles.

Good album

Classic

Better than I remembered. It’s very smooth and accomplished, but also soulful and peaceful. For a band I don’t always feel we’re either particularly cutting edge or particularly fun-oriented, this is high art.

Solid album. I haven’t listened to much Dire Straits except for their popular songs. Really enjoyed the guitar and drums and late solos and breaks.

Side A is incredible. So far away, Money for nothing and walk of life are all bangers. Side B definitely drops off in quality, but there is some interesting exploration. I actually enjoyed ride across the river after being initially turned off in the intro 10 seconds. Knopfler shows off some great guitar work the entire album. Its almost 5 stars, but not quite. 4.25.

This album gets 3 stars for Walk of Life by itself. Love that song. A real chillllllll vibe through the rest of it – Your Latest Trick has some real smooth cheesy sax and blues guitar that I can't pretend I don't like. Other than Walk of Life nothing really grabs me but I dig it all, man

DS was only on my periphery growing up, loved the greatest hits album and knew Knopfler is one of the guitar greats, but not much beyond that. Didn’t know they are British, or that Mark was also the lead singer (thought he was just the guitarist for a while). Regretting now not going a little deeper on them earlier. I could listen to him play all day - it’s technical but not showy or noodly. Every line he plays is something you could sing back, and I love the way he plays with dynamics. Yes its an odd paced album, but I have something good to say about most songs on the album. And they stick the landing with the final title track. Most of my favorite DS songs are on other albums - Sultans, Tunnel, Romeo and Juliet. Their album Making Movies seems to have more praise from DS fans, so it’s interesting to not see that on the list. I listened to that one yesterday and think it has more playback value.

As I told Grant many times, I have done a deep dive on Walk of Life earlier because I could not remember the name of it for the longest time. Otherwise, a very enjoyable album!

Pretty nice songs throughout. Standout tracks: So Far Away, Money for Nothing, Walk of Life, Why Worry

I love Dire Straits! So many hits on this album

я боялся задушиться, а в итоге нормально кайфанул. с саксофона в Your Latest Trick у меня даже привстал

I have always had in issue with this album. Mainly due to the way it was over hyped upon release. To many it is their seminal album. Not to me. However on a listen many years later, I had forgotten how many good tracks there were on it. One world is the almost only one that didn't greet me like an old friend. The other exception is the title track. As over hyped as U2. It really is a very poor track by their standards. And a very long way from deserving the plaudits it received. The absolute stand out song is The Man's Too Strong. But now to the important bit the score. Is it a 3, well as most of the tracks would qualify for a greatest hits album it's higher than that. Even though before a relisten that's what I expected to give it. Is it a 5? No it still doesn't compare to their eponymous debut album (one of the BEST EVER albums). So 4 it is.

I enjoyed this! I think it needs another listen.

Didn’t think I was much of a dire straits fan but I really enjoyed this

Dire Straits я люблю, но этой не лучший альбом у них

It’s great but feels dated

So smooth it’s borderline boring at times. But still great.

Banger after banger

It’s hard to dislike an album with a song like “Money for Nothing.” That riff alone is worth the price of admission. The whole album has this laid-back, clean sound that just works, even decades later. “Walk of Life” is another easy highlight, and the title track closes things out on a high note. Dire Straits never rush anything, but nothing here drags or feels forced. The production is crisp, the guitar work is top-notch, and Mark Knopfler’s voice fits the vibe perfectly. This one goes down easy every time.

This album straight up reminds me of driving in the car with my dad in the 90s. 4.3 stars

Great songs and will always remind me of dad

Great album

I enjoyed every track on here except Money For Nothing. The f-slur? Repeated three times in one verse, because I guess once wasn't enough? Not cool, man. Otherwise, there's not much to criticise here. Dire Straits have a very refined and precise style, and it works in all kinds of settings – from stadium rock to meditation music to everything in between. I'm a big fan of whatever's going on in Your Latest Trick. Smooth synth-jazz, reminds me a bit of Gaucho-era Steely Dan (which is an incredibly sick style in its own right). You can't go wrong with various sax licks over a chill, future-esque jazz bar cocktail night aesthetic. The synth riff in Walk Of Life is instantly recognisable, and the moody, memorable opener and closer (So Far Away; Brothers In Arms) set the album's tone very nicely. There's some clear influence from prog rock, country, jazz (of course), and classic blues-rock – and despite being from the 80s, it just barely manages to remain timeless. (Or it doesn't, depending on who you ask. I'm 50-50.) 4/5 Key tracks: So Far Away, Walk Of Life, Your Latest Trick, Brothers In Arms

What a great album. Comes out swinging with 3 of their greatest hits, and just keeps rocking from there. Enjoyed it from start to end, and would enjoy it again, and will enjoy it again. How can you not love an album that features Sting?

Can something be cheesy and awesome at the same time? Better believe it, if Mark Knopfler has anything to say about it. Great guitar work. Great album.

Super entspannend

Listened to the vinyl version so some of the tracks were a little shorter in length. Either way really good songs and flowed extremely well. 4/5

One of the greatest guitarists playing some of the most dogshit music

I always forget how deep this CD is -- I love the hits, but some of the non-singles are fantastic, especially the ballads "Your Latest Trick" and "Why Worry." A few tracks could be trimmed a bit, and the CD does lose a bit of steam after the first half.

I've often wondered how much better this album would have been if it had been made five years earlier, or ten years later, and avoided the growing pains of the 80s in the process (too much sax at times, too many keyboards, drum-machine-sounding beats, weird experiments with semi-easy-listening interludes, and those ubiquitous headbands). But despite that, this is still a really entertaining Dire Straits album, with a surprising number of radio hits on it. My favorites of the lot are the mainly the hits, especially the title track (whose video rivals some of the war imagery in Pink Floyd's "The Wall") as well as the iconic "Money for nothing" (whose video doesn't age as well but remains MTV's launchpad, and I never knew that was Sting singing "I want my MTV"!); the video for "Walk of life" is a great 80s sports nostalgia visit. "Your latest trick" seems like a strange coda for their earlier and far superior "Private investigations", and the "So far away" video is a bit puzzling, in that it's fun to see the band having a great time playing and recording a classic of theirs, but also very incongruous to have everyone smiling as they sing about the frustrations of a long-distance relationship... A few of the other songs on this album seem surprisingly disposable, given how strong the good ones are (looking at you especially, Buffett-like "Why worry"). But they're not frustrating enough to downgrade from 4 to 3 stars, and I really enjoyed "The man's too strong", even with the Paul-Simon-"Boxer" sounds. Mark Knopfler has a great and distinctive guitar style that I've always appreciated, and it shines in places on this album. I'm also glad to see there's another Dire Straits album in the collection, as it feels criminal to not get my all-time favorite Dire Straits song "Sultans of swing" (and one of my favorite songs period). And I'm really surprised how acidic the early reviews were for this album (especially UK critics); I mean, the 80s sound wasn't kind to anyone, but it's not *that* awful....

I get it: they're good at what they do and it's very well produced. I practically slid all the way to the end, it's so slick. But does anyone under the age of 63 actually like Dire Straits? Note: I'm technically a Boomer myself so I get say shit like this. I'm giving them 4 stars because I can't ignore their strengths but still.

Ah Nostalgia. Probably the first album played on millions of brand new CDs. I never owned it, but so much of it is so damned familiar. And it is a damned good album. Varied in styles, but always featuring the impeccable plank-spanking of Mark the K. Yes, I rate it.

Great sounding album and some strong songs but it does meander around. This is a 5/5 for some people and that's fine, but it's not tight enough for me to get to that rank. Good album to have on the list.

Cool album art. This album comes in so strong with three hits back to back, then the energy drops off. Starts to feel like a band taking requests. The album lacks a certain cohesiveness. Solid instrumentation and Mark Knopfler is amazing. I kind of wish this was produced in the 1970s to get some of the 1980s stank off of it.

Track ratings: 1. So Far Away - Certified jam / 2. Money For Nothing - f****t (disco elysium reference). Not for me / 3. Walk of Life - Not exactly for me but better than last. That main riff goes hard tho / 4. Your Latest Trick - ABSOLUTE FIRE / 5. Why Worry? - Pretty good / 6. Ride Across The River - DONKEY KONG ASS TRACK (fire) / 7. The Man's Too Strong - bro managed to sing like a country artist and still make a good song / 8. One World - YOOOO THIS SONG IS FIRE 9. Brothers in Arms - Very good / 50 year olds will really hear "buy the mtv you faggot" and say yeah this is the best song and then never listen to the beautiful and somber track that is 'Your Latest Trick.' Seriously, why is 'Money for Nothing' the second most popular track on this album and one of their most popular tracks of all time???? Very good album. I would probably give it a 5 if it wasn't for tracks 2 and 3. There are also certain songs that I like much more than some of the others that I did still did like but yk

Loved the first half, second half was okay. But, those first 4 are amazing! 4/5

A pleasantly surprising album brimming with fresh ideas and maturity. A laid-back but respectful tone with energy bursts thrown in make this a very enjoyable listen. This album sounds so modern; I'd believe it came out in 2020. Top tracks: So Far Away, Money for Nothing, Brothers In Arms

Yeah, pretty good. One of the better ones so far.

Three unreal openers! Knopfler has such unique finger picking playing style…

This album has been in the charts of my country for over 8.5 years. Used to be the longest ever. It's now Adele who is still top 10 after 13 years. It's better than I remembered and definitely much better than their other album on the list. It starts off very strong, the middle is boring, the title track at the end is my favorite song of the album.

I knew a surprising amount of songs from this album considering I wouldn't think of myself as being very familiar with Dire Straits. It's got a lot of their biggest hits on it, some great songs. Striking how long all of the tracks are here, averaging ~6 minutes each, especially considering the increase in sub 3 minute songs released lately. That said, I do feel like some may benefit from being slightly tighter though. For example, turns out I'm familiar with the shortened radio edit of Money for Nothing, and I think I prefer it to the full version, as atmospheric as the intro is. The title track is such an amazing song and a great closer to the album, though I must admit that there's a cover version I prefer to the original.

No idea they were the "Walk of Life" artists! Rest of the album was good, too, enjoyable easy listening and liked 'Brothers in Arms', too.

An all around goodie, Money For Nothing's opening riff still gets me, and I like the variety of styles that Mark Knopfler plays on the album.

Another great album! A lot of hits that still hold up today on it! Super easy to listen to with excellent guitar

First three tracks were solid and ones I've heard before (So Far Away/Money for Nothing/Walk of Life).

A fine album. Chill, and phenomenal guitar work through-out. The repeated use of faggot in "Money For Nothing" did not age well, but it was such a common usage word back then, I have to cut them some slack.

Great album, if not just for Brothers in Arms alone

One of my dad’s favorites from when I was growing up. Can’t hear it without getting nostalgic but there’s also just some really good music on here.

Mom a lot of good stuff on here but a little long and unfocused. Still, a good listen. Light 4.

At first I couldn't understand why this album would start with "So Far Away" and not "Money For Nothing" which is much more dynamic, exciting and energetic, but this album is not about that. It's about vibes. This album features a lot of songs that seem to last much longer than they should but worked as when I thought of them more as structured meditations. In that respect "So Far Away" with its repetitiveness was a much fairer preview of what was to come. I would assume a lot of this album was influenced by the softer moments on Bruce Springsteen's "The River" which came out 5 years earlier. The songs had good stories, some beautiful saxophone parts and most importantly (for me of course) some searing guitar lines. I mean check out the end of "ride across the river", god damn. This album grew on me the more I listened, which must be a good thing right? High 4.

Very good overall. 8.5/10. My favorite song is Money for Nothing, which has a really good guitar intro. One song has some pretty derogatory language which I didn't like.

I was a bit sceptical of this for some reason, but it sure did prove me wrong. Almost all famous Dire Straits songs on the same record, impressive. Particularly ‘Money for nothing’ really is a banger! But there are also a handful of other songs that are good, like ‘Your latest trick’ and ‘One world’. Though famous, I really don’t think ‘Walk of life’ is a particularly good song. It’s too tame or meek, which is enhanced when sitting behind ‘Money for nothing’. I’m don’t think Mark Knopfler is a particularly good singer, quite the opposite actually. It sounds very half arsed and boring. But in summary I found it a surprisingly good record, where not only the hits delivered. Almost want to give it a weak 5, but a 4 feels more balanced.

When Dire Straits are good they are really great. The intro to "Money for Nothing" is a prime contender for top riffs of all time. There is also "Walk of Life" that is very different than the other songs but something about it is just fun! The rest of the album is a bit of a lull but it finishes of with "Brothers in Arms" which is another very good song. 3 hits and leave the rest. I think a weak 4 is warranted.

It's not 'Making Moves', but it's still pretty good

This one is so gooood. I feel like some tracks might overstay their welcome, but that isn’t a big issue as they don’t overstay for too long to me personally. There’s still some killer tracks on this thing.

Such a classic awesome album

Dire Straits are so chill, man. A couple huge hits here, but a lot of the deep cuts were just as good. The vibes are immaculate, soft synthy rock that makes you sit back in your chair. Mark Knopfler is a fantastic guitarist, in no small part due to the fact that he doesn't overplay or show off -- he gives the song exactly what it needs. This is probably a 4.5 star album in my eyes, but I'll round down -- because some of these songs have been just a little overplayed. At no fault of the band's, though!

For some reason this album always puts me behind the lawnmower in the front left corner of my parents' front yard. Side 2 accomplishes more than some well-regarded concept albums.

Moving this one up to 4 stars because it has a few songs that are absolutely A+, but the middle of the album is definitely too slow for my taste. It starts and ends so perfectly though. And Money for Nothing is such a banger that it wouldn’t feel right giving this one a 3. Definitely a quality listen for a mood shifting classic rock album.

Did I hear a jazz flute solo?

Masterful guitar playing with restrained supporting instrumentation. Top tier hifi recording. The track Brothers in Arms is an all time great electric guitar song. Very solid album.

Fun album with fun lyrics

Sept. 12, 2024 I need to stop reading the Wiki and reviews before I finish the album bc I feel like I just bias myself into liking or disliking an album. Anyway, this one was good. I might listen to it again, so 4/5

Front-loaded with all the songs you know and love. The rest are decent to middling.

Good but too old-school for me

The good bits are great, the rest is so so.

Probably their most iconic album in the sense that it’s ubiquitous in music culture. The tracks are solid if varied with several songs that have remained radio mainstays.

nimmtmi sehr wunder, het ja es paar sehr berüehmti lieder uf dem album so far away isch kinda cute aber plätscheret chli vor sich hii iwie DRUMS money for nothing fangt fantastisch ah poahhh so mega ghypede ahfang und denn chunnts chli weirde riff wo iwie laid back isch, mega d synthis passed SO GUET, ener selte ihgsetzt aber würkli taktvoll mmh AH DAS ISCH WALK OF LIFE FUNNY ich hass und lieb s lied glichzitig tbh oeff your latest trick isch sexyyyyyyy s lied als gsamts isch naja aber s sax und d perkussion isch supeeeer joa why worry isch na herzig aber nüt berauschends poah sie chönnd schono gitarre spiele BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSS one world hani jz chli langwilig gfunde uuuund brothers in arms wird wieder dur d giti grettet. de song ah sich isch zwar schön aber nüt krasses. hie und da schöni bassline und de synthi (?) wo nur chli im hindergrund e basis leit isch au sehr guet. ja huere guets album fr fr. gege de schluss chli nahglah aber es starchs 4i. hanmer au es 5i überleit aber ebe.

This album really comes out swinging and then becomes a snooze really fast.

Chill.

I love Dire Straits. Walk of Life is an all-time track. This is a good album with good deep cuts. Came ever so close to a five star, but there were enough just OK tracks to hold it back.

really nice. get's me in the mood

Enjoyed it more than I expected

Good album, but why did it have to get soft on me. I still enjoyed the slow songs but I was kinda hoping for a couple more Money for Nothings

Under the radar great guitar, excellent songs, though it does get a bit slow. But a great album.

Always rather liked Dire Straits but never bought any of their albums. Favorite song is "Romeo and Juliet" with "Brothers In Arms" as a close second.

# Playlist track - Your Latest Trick # Notes - I used to LOVE playing the sax lines of "Your Latest Trick" on the Keyboard back in my teens. - The first side is absolutely brilliant. Banger after banger, no comments. - Side B is a bit weaker, but since A is so great, I'm taking out only a star for it.

Some classic hits on here. So Far Away is the highlight for me. Otherwise a pretty laid-back groove. Mark Knopfler plays some gorgeous guitar. A good late at night with a whiskey album.

Gorgeous, just gorgeous.

Very nice little album. I really like Money For Nothing from back in the day whenever I listened to it when I was young, but there were a few other popular songs as well, which I was surprised to see in one album. The rest of the songs sounded relatively familiar, but I think it's just the "Dire Straits sound". I enjoyed listening to all the songs in the background, very good stuff.

Hørt mange gange før. Min far havde cd’en i bilen - så meget nostalgisk for mig :)) dette giver ekstra point hehe 4/5

This was pretty interesting. Overall a solid rock record with some cool stuff. I don't love his voice but overall I enjoyed the record a decent amount.

Pretty sweet little album! Not quite as bluesy as their self-titled, but still had a lot of cool varied sounds. It feels little "80s" especially in Money for Nothing and One World. However, So Far Away, Your Latest Trick and Ride Across the River kind of all have that classic Dire Straits sound. With the exception of Ride Across the River, which had some incredible saxophone in it. Walk of Life is just a treasure, and one of my favorite songs from the 80s. I was also kind of blown away by The Man's Too Strong. It had kind of a Irish folk ring to it. Brother in Arms is a perfect album ending. This is a really cool record, that I think kind of gets lumped into the mess that is the 1980s. And on some levels it fits right in, and on another level with certain songs it surpasses the 1980s and has a timeless element to it.

I think the slur in Money For Nothing was used satirically and Knopfler is obviously playing a character, nobody in Dire Straits was installing microwave ovens, delivering custom kitchens or moving refrigerators and color TVs. That being said, I also get how to today's ears it comes across as over the top and that's a good thing. Anyway, this album sounds great and I listened to the shit out of it when it was all MTV etc.

7/10, really liked the first song

Buenísimo

A few really nice songs, I enjoyed the whole album

It was quite good! Good combination of voice guitar and occasional synth

Some good old hits, otherwise meh

I think I first heard about the Dire Straits from Nicole’s dad. I had two songs already saved, but this album exceeded my expectations. The final song, Brothers in Arms, is such a good closer to the album.

Great band, and songs. Love this album.

This is a great record, but I have to grade it on a curve, and given that I can think of three Dire Straits records I like better -- without even making an effort, I know I like the debut, "Making Movies" and "Love Over Gold" better than this record -- I can't give this one five stars. The rest of the world discovered Dire Straits because of this record, but that doesn't mean it's the best Dire Straits record. Not even close.

Great Dire straights album. Several really good songs on here.

Brothers In Arms on albumina mainio. Ei huonoja biisejä ja hienosti tuotettu kokonaisuus.

Such an iconic album. Very representative of the 1980s and music video evolution.

A departure from their original sound, a bit more into the foray of soft rock pop, not a terrible thing, but I feel they never excelled at pop. It’s their rock, present on this album, that propels them forward. Mark wrote very tasty riffs and could shred the living hell out of a 6 string. I just think some of these songs lack cohesion, but are ultimately enjoyable.

A great album by a great band. Some fantastic and complex songs with diverse and skilled musicality. Some others drag on a bit, but are still musically interesting. Mark Knopfler's voice does get to be a little hard to engage with after a while.

151/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Unexpectedly calming. There was a point where the album just breezed by and I didn’t realize how wrapped into songs like Why Worried Now I was, until I thought “wow, I’ve been listening for 30+ minutes and it doesn’t even feel like it.” I just felt chill and calm. Not even thinking about the music, I just sat in the feeling and got lost in it.

Love the guitar, a lot of misses. Those slurs come out of nowhere though.

kinda lost me in the middle , knopfler's guitar just whispers to you throughout the album and is sublime.so far away, mfn, brother in arms fav

Man.....I was blown away by that 180 the album took after the first track. So Far Away isn't terrible by any means, but it doesn't sound all that much like the rest of the album. Sorta a boomer-bait song. Money For Nothing is the real start of the album. An instantly catchy almost a little new wavey hard rock track that was so good, I had to listen to it a second time before moving on. The rest of the album dips its toes in to all sorts of genres that make it for a really enjoyable listen. Lots of very atmospheric soft rock and some Americana adjacent stuff too. The title tack, which is also the final, is just as good as Money for Nothing, but for entirely different reasons. Its a seven minute long swansong for the album that is by far the proggiest track here. It ends with a beautiful ambient section that gave me chills. A seriously great listen.

This is a fantastic album. So many great songs, the popular and the unknown to me.

So far away, money for nothing and walk of life are amazing. Three brilliant tracks to open the album with. Kind of makes it hard and sets a very high bar for the rest of the album though. The album takes a turn in pace at this point and slows down considerably. I love the sax in your latest trick. Great slow mover this song. Why worry is another good slow mover. The album definitely lulls slightly in the middle section. However a great finish with brother in arms.

Really good album. Short and sweet with more than a few singles. Pther songs might not be radio friendly but feel great as part of the album and its flow.

I wish we could give half stars. I've had a string of 3 star albums that I feel have all been "fine". Parts of this album were better than fine, but the lows were quite boring. 4 stars almost seems too high, but my dad loves Mark Knopfler, so this star's for you, dad.

Great sound, familiar tunes, Dire Straits always nails it on the head

If this album was Money for Nothing for a straight hour, it would be a 5/5. It still is a really good album, even though none of the other songs really measure up to Money for Nothing (what can, if we're being honest?). It's a lot more vibey than I thought it would be.

20224-07-19...

4 out of 5. It's not their first album but Money For Nothing and Walk of Life are there. So Far Away From Me is too.

Great album, listen to it a bunch.

Amazing singles, knofler was going a bit mental withe the filler, very much 80s filler, singles were great though

Fun album. couple of all-timers on there

I’ve always thought ‘oh cool, dire straits is playing’ in a well alright, kinda unremarkable way but this album raised my awareness beyond good easy listenen’ to here’s a band I fucking respect with some good ol artistry, guts and ambition. Album starts off banger after banger and you know knopfler could keep throwing those catchy guitar licks at ya all day but then, what’s this, he throws some curve balls at ya and settles into something more subdued, weird and yearning. Even his catchy single like MTV make you earn the party with an extended unconventional ambient opening. Some may say incohesive album but those people are boring - I say ambitious, cool, surprisingly slightly left-of-center album. The dudes go for it. Good on ya Knopfler and co.

Excellent Album

Mark Knopfler goes hard!! I never heard the album version of Money for Nothing before. I think there's a good reason for that though. The censored Guitar Hero version used to rock so hard. The album version's weird verse kind of threw me off. Good solid album though.

Super enjoyable background music (?) like I can’t remember any song but I was enjoying it

The first half is great. The lyrics are dated including the use of “f$g”. The second half is kind of “mid”. The riffs are solid. 4

Ein tolles Album. Richtig gute Musik.

Brings me back to the 80’s. Very classic sound from Dire Straights. The album starts off strong with three big hits and then fades a bit. Another strong finish but a little slow through the middle. As an album, all songs go well together stylistically.

It has some classics

I quite liked it. Money for Nothing riff has always kicked ass and will never stop kicking ass.

Pretty solid.

Ahh okay, I thought I detested Dire Straits but that might've been absorbed from somebody else. If I expect mellow then I have a fine time.

This is the first time I have listened to the full Brothers In Arms album, a bit of legendary record amongst rock fans. I've seen plenty of lists of best songs ever with Brothers In Arms and Money For Nothing taking two top places. And those songs are undeniably great. Amazing guitars, great flow, top shelf riffs. The thing is that the rest of the album is just a bit above average and I don't really think Mark Knopfler is the greatest singer ever. If this record would be just few songs, adding Walk of Life and maybe So Far Away, it's easily somewhere at the top. Instead, it's very solid, but largely forgettable.

I really like Dire Straits, and I think this album is great. I'm a big fan of the guitar work, the vocals and the other unusual instruments they use. It's kind of unique in that respect. Classic rock but elevated. 4/5 for me.

Oh, I've still got the vinyl LP I bought when I was 12. This one was on high rotation being one of about a dozen records and tapes I owned and still holds a place in my heart. Like a lot of albums, it's HEAVILY front-loaded. I could listen to Side One and not be too disappointed if I didn't turn the album over. Standouts for me include 'Walk of Life' - a rocking little number, and 'Your Latest Trick' -with sooooo much moody 80s saxophone. The album fades into the background a little on Side Two. Lot's of war imagery that's really incongruous with Side One's more straight forward hits. Finishes solidly with the title track. Hard to tell if I'm just listening through the fog of nostalgia, but overall I still really like this album.

Very good album and being an early digital recorded album it sounds fantastic, love that guitar tone. That being said while there indeed some great songs, the 2nd half of the album is not nearly as strong. I'll listen to the first 3 releases before this one when I'm in a Dire Straits mood.

Pristine recording, Knopfler’s brilliant guitar and singular vocals make this a great record. This was HUGE when it came out. Thanks MTV. Not my favorite Dire Straits but worthy of the list.

This album starts off so strong, the first 3-4 songs make you think you're going to get a 5 star easy, no thought about it album. But it drags quite a bit in the second half. So it's a good album, but not perfect by any means.

Obviously great music. Amazing instrumentation that got better the second time I went through it. It was a bit slow for my taste but definitely one that I think will only sound better the more I listen.

Money for Nothing on heavy rotation on MTV in 1985-88. Still on heavy rotation in my head nearly 40 years later.

Gutes Album mit beruhigenden Songs

Poppiger Einstieg, anschließend wird man auf bekannten Dire Straits Schwingen mitgenommen. Super rundes Album

was gooodddd. great album to listen in the car as well

Starts strong and fades a bit. Guitar work is clean and interesting throughout My sister had this on vinyl back in the day. Bit of a different listening experience.

Tight ass tone, never to be recreated from the half down wah at george martins Caribbean studio. Brought in a ringer for the drums. Walk of life, title track, and of course money for nothing all bonafide classics, even if the organ is annoying on walk. Solid guitar work as always from big M. K. That's the way you do it

Love Side 1, especially So Far Away 💙

Great 👍👍

Already heard this one before this challenge. Dire Straits are (well...were) an awesome band. Mark Knopfler is an fantastic guitarist and also a great songwriter (sure, he can get cheesy at times, but still-), and this album is Dire Straits's biggest achievement. Not sure if I can say this is my favourite album from them, I kinda enjoy Making Movies a bit more, but its safe to say this is a close 2nd favourite. It balances pop rock/new wave energy and atmospheric, ballad-y, introspective vibes really well. "So Far Away" is a great opener. "Money For Nothing" is a classic, of course. I can say this song has my favorite intro in a song (Sting's vocal intro, those synths, those drums and THAT riff, which sure, is overplayed, but its iconic, and also can be hard to master when learning it, especially for a guitarist). "Walk Of Life" is one of my favorites because of its positive vibe. Gives me stadium vibes, but in a good way. "Why Worry?" can be seen as a love song, but I also see it as a comfort song. Whenever I think about the horrors that are happening in this world, I put this song and I feel much better. Most of Side A is awesome, but Side B reduces the quality a bit, still good, but I spin tracks from side B quite rare. The title track is the CLUTCH of this side, which is why I say its another favorite song of the album. This was supposed to be Dire Straits's 'goodbye' album, but they came back in 1991 with On Every Street. Overall, great album, great messages throughout the songs, a classic 80s album that I go back to quite often actually. Definitely a must-hear, and also a great starting point for someone who has never listened to Dire Straits before or someone who only knows the band's hit songs. -favourite songs: So Far Away, Money For Nothing (<3), Walk Of Life (<3), Why Worry?, the title track (<3) -least favourite song: One World

I want my mtv 🤩

Tracks 1-3 - 10000/10 Tracks 4-7 - 6/10 Tracks 8-9 - 8/10 Starts unbelievably strong. Money For Nothing has possibly the best guitar riff of all time. Walk Of Life is also brilliant, always thought it sounded very Bruce Springsteen. A few of the later tracks are more forgettable. Great album but it does lose steam a tad which prevents it from being 5 stars.

Only recently found out knopfler was from Glasgow! Always thought he was from somewhere Salt Lake City or something like that. Maybe Philadelphia? Anyway, got to be the best opening 3 tracks to any album! It’s almost like they knew exactly what I wanted at every point of this album. Totally effortless! There I am thinking this guitar is cool but I really fancy some pan pipes. BAM - hits us with ride across the river! Amazing! 4.4

What a fun treat! Sweet guitar, great songs and memories! Anyone else remember that sweet music video ?!

There's some classic tunes on here. Overall enjoyed this album! 4 ⭐️

Ganske kult, aldri hørt no dire straits før egt. En del som ikke fenga, men my classics og. Tippe æ kjæm te å hør det her på nytt igjen en gang seiner!

Classic still beautiful

Surprisingly fun and an easy listen. The upbeat tracks are especially nice. They're quite unique among other '80s rock acts for not having terrible names, not having annoying vocals, and not having shitty synths ruining the entire thing. Kudos for that!

It’s like two albums: one being greatest hits, the other being these long intro deep cuts. It’s lovely.

I really like this album, but I'm absolutely befuddled by the sequencing. Who doesn't start an album with Money For Nothing? Also, lyrically there are some things that don't hold up today.

i like it 4/5

Enjoyable!! I liked it, banger songs🔥🔥

I've been sleeping on Dire Straits. 4/5

A nostalgic 5

Solid album. Side A is perfect, Side B is less perfect than side A, but still excellent.

Feels like a listening to a movie soundtrack.

Very 1985

Three great jams to kick off an album. Hard to beat that intro. It does however lose it's groove and seems to wonder and get lost a little. The music isn't bad, but it becomes more of a "jam" album that the songs run together a bit. It wakes up again at One World, and then floats off into the distance with the title track.

Straight fire. So chill and so hype at the same time somehow. Highlights would be money for nothing, why worry, so far away and the title track

Pretty chill and enjoyable

For me, 2 songs carried this album - obviously. Overall, I did enjoy the album though

Outstanding record quality, amazing sound and lots of good tracks. Cant say that this album was exceptional, but it was great pleasure to listen it from hifi headphones

Money for nothing is a banger

A great album of its time. A bit dated now, but Mark Knopfler was an inspiration to a generation of skilled guitarists with limited songwriting abilities

Pretty slay, would listen again

Unbelievable that the absolute tearjerker Brothers in Arms is packaged with the goofy CGI fridge movers of Money for Nothing. And where the fuck did the horns on Your Latest Trick come from? Good stuff all around.

Masterpiece is a subjective term. Brothers in Arms walks that line. Mark Knopfler is a master guitarist and master producer. This record is his most accessible, successful project. There are no bad songs. It opens with three hit singles and never lets up. It's a masterpiece. Just not a transcendent, must hear masterpiece. If you like yacht rock, solo Eric Clapton, or The Moody Blues you should definitely listen to this album. 4/5.

This is more my speed. I didn’t think that I’d heard of Dire Straits, but I definitely knew “Money for Nothing.” A lot of these songs are so close to what I’d listen to normally, but just a touch too 80s / sad girl energy. I still downloaded a few songs for the vibes. Also their album covers are absolutely sick from a graphic design perspective.

85/100 Favourite songs: Money for Nothing, Ride Across The River, Brothers In Arms Least favourite song: n/a

Dire Straits has always had awesome guitar playing.

Phenomenal album.

The non hits are more awesome than expected

It's nice relaxing

This is one of those albums, like Rumours or Hotel California that is almost beyond criticism. Easy to dismiss as dull, its ubiquity is a major factor in that conclusion. In fact, like the other two, it’s an exceedingly well crafted album. Important in being the album that the sound quality of cds was demonstrated using this album it is a mix of brilliance and banality. Dire Straits to me at least is a rough equivalent to Creedence Clearwater Revival, insofar as they were made up of brothers and friends and the songs that Mark wrote were much bigger than the band. They are a fine band but not a virtuosic band like, I don’t know, The Police or The Blockheads. Except for the exceptional guitar playing of Mark the band is a bit journeyman. Mark’s limited vocalising works, especially on things like ‘your latest trick’. Of course he wrote the songs and was aware of his limitations. I think it’s telling that the best songs have wiki links. And were singles. I do like this album. I suppose it’s musical RNA to me. There’s a sense that readers in this group may find it dull. It’s not dull but it’s not an album that for me I need to listen to much even though as a guitarist I deeply admire Mark Knopfler’s style. 3.5

I smiled and almost laughed out loud at the 1:30 mark of ”Money for Nothing” . its juts so fun and silly... This is no virtuoso First Clarinetist playing the improvised Glissando from Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin. It is 100% mass produced over polished mainstream stereo candy for the masses. And it's as fun to listen to as ever, especially turned up slightly too loud, and I am back there.. Ranking 80s albums is very risky business. I mean is it here because it is “so quintessentially 80s” or “so loved”. What defines it as “essential” or musical education? Who wins and loses here, the masses, the critics, and what is Art, when so many like it like this. huh!? It isn't great blues guitar, or anything. Its mainstreamed for a simple palate. Which is why it is an almost perfect “SOUNDTRACK” to the (male, mainstream) TASTES of the 80s, (and how to shape and please them - and maybe exploit or pander to them - for better or worse). And how funny watching my now middle-aged myself - I delayed listening due to trepidation (slight cringe - will I still like it?) and anticipation (I want to listen with my good headphones to get the best of it). Like resuming a neglected old friendship, I wanted to give it the best chance ... and not be too critical lest they judge me too. So yes, Its 100% pure mainstream pop rock music. Highly commercial, polished / produced from a well resourced supergroup. Love or hate it, it's pretty far from musical “purity” - hardly raw and live. These are suburban cosy anthems which is why it just “goes in so easily” . I refuse to claim the immunity by way of sophistication and discernment in the face of its moody synth and air guitar charms and - yes, the nostalgia. And how else to demonstrate a totally indulgent excessive stereo separation of drum kits (its almost binaural) to today's generation? I mean , there are only so many warm catchy spine tingling pop supergroup from the 80s to call on. [Alternatives are “Tango in the night” by Fleetwood Mac, “in the air tonight” by Phil Collins,or “I wear my sunglasses at night” preferably played in a 1986 Porsche 928 s4 with a Clarion or a 1989 Nissan Skyline with on Alpine hifi 8 speaker stereo. ] Like a burger, its on occasional guilty pleasure. But its very hard to get a burger to 5 stars.

Solid album, great sounds overall

Love the sound, soft and calming. Already knew ‘Walk of Life’ XD Ironically, this came on as I was studying and ‘Why Worry?’ was a perfect track

Really strong 4, it lost me a bit in the middle. Despite the foul language, walk of life is my favorite

Ok so Dire Straits is the band I never knew that I already knew. Found myself recognizing a few tunes such as Money for Nothing and Walk of Life. I also see they perform Sultans of Swing which is an all time banger. This was a pretty solid rock album. All the songs felt spacious and sonically interesting. It lost a little steam for me in the middle where it was slower, but I enjoyed the majority of the tracks on here. Fav Tracks So Far Away Money for Nothing Walk of Life One World

Wonderful

Still pretty ok, especially the title track

Some popular hits and some cool pieces I'd never heard.

Solid 3 songs to start the album. Walk of Life is great and reminds me of baseball probably because it was used in highlight reels or something. Goes a small distance to redeeming 1985 as the worst year in music. Gets slow in the middle so loses 5th star

Great music

banger ofc

wish i was more familiar with earlier dire straits stuff to make a comparison to their earlier work, especially since it probably isnt fair to keep making springsteen comparisons but thats the rock artist from this era im the most familiar with. anyways this has a great mix of rock with some 80s new wavey atmosphere and synth. no idea how typical that is for them. each tracks has an unreal and unique intro. i love how sparingly distortion is used, you can appreciate the instruments precision when its laid out as clean as it is. knopfler plays guitar with so much grace and had an ear for layering instruments to build a song. track 1 - nice riff, the vocals reminded me a bit of bruce springsteen. easy song to listen to track 2 - very atmospheric intro with the arpeggiated synth and pink floyd style keys. the ramp up with the drums rocks. love a good slur track 3 - joy in a song, lovely organ intro and the rest of the instruments layer in beautifully. a modern take on a 50s song. he got the action, he got the motion track 4 - an intro of a trumpet solo into sax solo is so crazy. the guitar(s?) give great texture with the synths. strong springsteen vibe but more adventurous production for sure track 5 - yet another beautiful intro, this time delivered on a guitar. if track 3 was joy, this is hope and peace. "there should be laughter after pain/there should be sunshine after rain". the jam when the drums get snare-heavy rules, love how the bass sounds here. track 6 - once again the intro tone setting gives so much jungle atmosphere to the song, this time one with very militaristic lyrics. field recordings, the N64 synth sound, the trumpets bursting in and out of the mix, the tribal tone of the drums, the sustained chords of electric guitar and humid guitar solos hanging in the air like you heard them from a distance in a rainforest. i almost expected a lion to roar track 7 - another militaristic track, this time moving from a dense jungle sound to some more like CCR. cool when they play the big loud chord during the chorus you can still hear the rest of the big, nice bit of mastering. track 8 - hits you in the face with its intro, love how funky this one is. dont get how mark can play guitar like this and sing at the time time, mans a wizard. the gothy keys/synth half way are crazy. track 9 - entrancing use of synth and sparing guitar (plus that reverse reverb tone?)). this song has gravity like few ive ever heard. instead of outright anger at injustice, mark's tender vocals give meaning to a wars loss of life and depth to the longing for home that those sent to die must have felt.

Side A is way, way better than side B. There definitely is some filler here, and the back half is a bit tedious at times. But damn if it doesn't start off so strong. And Knopfler's guitar does so much heavy lifting here -- even if the song was a bit meh, it's so fun to hear him work his magic. Good listen overall.

I enjoyed this waaaaayyyyy more than I thought I would. Great sounding record. Still don’t know why So Far Away is the opening track.

Interesting to learn how many of these songs were familiar to me without knowing they were Dire Straits (only could have named Sultans of Swing). Definitely never heard the second verse of Money for Nothing though. Not surprising. No absolute clunkers and lots of great guitar. Your Latest Trick intro is lovely. Minus points for being 55 minutes long on only 9 songs. Could have been better at half the length (lose a few tracks and half the runtime of a few others).

Iconic guitar work. 🎸

Such a cool voice. Great guitar tones. The jams are chill and spacey. 1985 language usage aside…it’s a pretty solid album. As a guitarist you have to appreciate the playing

Walk of Life Your Latest Trick Why Worry Ride Across the River The Man’s Too Strong Brothers In Arms Very chill album. Nice to relax too. Could definitely listen to it again down the road. Feels like it’s missing something tho. I do like more upbeat music so maybe it’s just a tad too slow.

Really enjoyable album. Some big classic hits and then a bunch of other great songs. Probably just on the 4 side of 4.5 for me.

Great album. Would rate as 4.5

something like a "best of", brothers in arms is great

Unapologetically 80s. Some of the latter half of the album felt like filler, but otherwise it's pretty solid. 8/10 Would I listen again? Yes

Ride across the river is wel echt belachelijk saai trouwens.. FAVO: Money for nothing, Walk of Life, Your latest trick, Why worry?, Brothers in arms

This shit slaaaaps. That guitar tone on Money For Nothing is so satisfying to listen to.

Why worry to one world drags a little, but the rest of the album is very good. Money for nothing has a killer riff.

4.3/5 Best Track: Walk of Life

Solid blues rock album that utilizes a bunch of instruments that are typically associated with specific genres yet makes them work together perfectly. 8/10

I ebbed and flowed on liking this one throughout the album. I was very into the first few tracks, then kinda checked out for the middle, then got back into it for the end. In general I liked the songs with more energy, not so much the slower more ambient ones. Walk of Life was a delight. I was stuck in traffic when it came on and was bouncing all around my seat. Also this is such an incredibly 80s sounding album. What a time capsule. 7/10 and I will probably revisit a few more times. C- album cover

I liked the diverse sound and quality of the production a lot

Great sense of nostalgia when this came on - many songs that I’ve heard on repeat during long car rides in my childhood. I’d be interested to know how younger listeners and those unfamiliar find it from a blind listen. Definitely enjoy the album on many levels but worth noted some lyrics are problematic.

Was the first album of the day. I am road tripping to Pittsburgh w my mommy(I drove all 9 hours) so I didn’t get to write an immediate review because #bothhandsonthewheel but I liked this. Have had Romeo and Juliet on repeat since it was in the music league and none of the songs on this album were that good but I still thought the album overall is good. For all the albums I listened to today, I think being on the road made them better bc any gaps in interesting music I just paid attention to the scenery instead. Ca->pa review #1

This is great. I don’t even like rippin guitar stuff that much but this album makes me like it. The first time I heard Brothers in Arms was a cover of it by Home Free (a cappella group) that imo was quite good but doesn’t have the grit of the original. 8/10

Was listening while doing something else so I really enjoyed it. If I was only listening I think I would have gotten kinda bored

Good album, enjoyable the whole way through, but maybe a little boring 7/10

3.9 Even tho I prefer the self titled as an album, brothers in arms definitely has the better singles. Fave songs: Walk of Life, Money for Nothing, So Far Away

Better than I expected. Pretty well produced strong 80's sound. Mark Knopfler is a pretty impressive dude. 3.5/5

Super fun. Made me get into the music even though I didn't really feel like it

Några hits. Två. Svinbra. Sen har vi lite mellanlåtar som, handen på hjärtat, inte är så värst bra, tex your latest trick, why worry (som avslutar kanske skönt), ride across the river (låter som en låt från monkey island). Sen en del sköna. Svårt.

Loved listening to this! It was so interesting.

This album is much more than the song with the hit video from MTV. Pretty good album overall. I especially liked the final, title track, Brothers in Arms

Great voice, great guitar, good writing makes this a very good album. I enjoyed hearing some of those that weren't destroyed by MTV and radio saturation.

If you’re in the right mood

Dad rock in its most concentrated form.

Started with some classics, but tailed off

Every song on the is enjoyable and fun. However, I don't see myself going back to listen to the full album in the future.

Classic 80s music.

Not perfect, but damn close. DS & MK rule!

Iconic album. The sound of Newcastle last century

really enjoyed this album I recognized 2-3 songs that are classics--I simply had no idea they were from Dire Straights.

Never heard the entire album before—put me to sleep. Guess I’m not a huge fan, but classic “dad rock”.

Dad's favorite band, has some good songs on it Money For Nothin holds a special place, Walk of Life is another banger

Have to agree with Jack, first three tracks were superb. Listening to them made me feel strong and confident, ready to take on the world. Almost like an attack. The middle of the album was middling.

Bit of a strange album....First 3 tracks are great, the next 4 leave a lot to be desired, the final track is brilliant. I do like dire straits, but probably more of a greatest hits type fan. This album hasn't persuaded me that I need to hear anything but the hits. I went through a phase of really liking the track brothers in arms. Highlights: So far away Money for nothing Walk of life Brothers in arms Probably could've halved this album and it would've been considerably better, but when it's good it's great. 3.5

Not the best Dire Straits album IMO But still very good

The first half is so amazing I could maybe squeak out a fiver just on its strength. The back half though I think falls right off a cliff.

Felt like I was in ice age, and after the third 3 minute jam break I expected "produced by Dick Wolfe" to appear in front of me. 3.7/5

Was very ready to give this album a five. The first four songs are absolute bangers start to finish. Money for Nothing intro is like top 5 intro's of all time, Walk of Life is the catchiest most uplifting tracks one can imagine. The last half of this album DRAGS though. What gives? There's no return to anything we heard in the first half. Such a shame I thought I was ready to give my first 5 in like 50 albums. So close.

So, the 1-2-3 punch of songs at the beginning of Brothers In Arms is arguably THE most impressive of any album from the classic rock era--and easily among the best from any album in modern music. Let's just get that out of the way first. Thanks to some drug commercial from the 00s that I cannot even remember the name of the drug itself (I Googled it, it was Farxiga! To treat high blood pressure!), Walk of Life will now always be associated with a commercial to me. But that doesn't take away from its awesomeness. I'd never heard Your Latest Trick before listening to this album (apparently it was another single?). Smooth jazz vibes up the wazoo (that sax!) and that's a good thing. Outside of the mega singles, this album sports a relatively contemplative tone (especially on tracks Why Worry, Ride Across the River, and the title track), exploring quieter synth and guitar riffs and themes about war and what's left behind after it ends. Interesting Wikipedia factoids: *The music video for "Money for Nothing" received heavy rotation on MTV, and it was the first to be aired on MTV Europe when the network launched on 1 August 1987. It is one of only two Dire Straits songs on a studio album not to be solely credited to Knopfler (the other being "The Carousel Waltz", which opens Making Movies), with guest vocalist Sting given a co-writing credit due to the melody of the repeated "I want my MTV" (sung by Sting) in the song's fadeout echoing the melody of the Police's "Don't Stand So Close to Me."...The music video for the song features early 3D computer animation illustrating the lyrics. The video was one of the first uses of computer-animated human characters and was groundbreaking at the time of its release. *Mark Knopfler described the writing of (Money For Nothing) in a 1984 interview with critic Bill Flanagan: "The lead character in "Money for Nothing" is a guy who works in the hardware department in a television/custom kitchen/refrigerator/microwave appliance store. He's singing the song. I wrote the song when I was actually in the store. I borrowed a bit of paper and started to write the song down in the store. I wanted to use a lot of the language that the real guy actually used when I heard him, because it was more real...." *"Walk of Life" was a number two hit on the UK Singles Chart in early 1986 and a number seven hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 later that year. The song was nearly left off the album but was included after the band out-voted producer Neil Dorfsman. *Written during the 1982 Falklands War, "Brothers in Arms" deals with the senselessness of war. In 2007, the 25th anniversary of the war, Knopfler recorded a new version of the song at Abbey Road Studios to raise funds for British veterans who he said "are still suffering from the effects of that conflict." *The guitar featured on the front of the album cover is Mark Knopfler's 1937 14-fret National Style "O" Resonator. The Style "O" line of guitars was introduced in 1930 and discontinued in 1941. *Brothers in Arms was one of the first albums directed at the CD market, and it was a full digital recording (DDD) at a time when most popular music was recorded on analog equipment. Mooi album

Honestly, just a lot of very solid pop-rock and new-wave-inspired tunes throughout this thing. Rather than a coherent flow between all the tracks, in both subject matter and theme, it feels more like the greatest hit collection from the band. It's certainly a product of its time (like on the song "Walk of Life) with rasped vocals delivered by Mark over a cutesy and cheesy synth lead melody. Despite it being an 80s pop-rock staple that I've heard many times before, I can safely say it still holds up. Just as cheesy is the saxophone melody that kicks off "Your Latest Trick", maybe less to its benefit though. I can't say I enjoyed the more subdued and intimate sound presented in this song. "Why Worry?" is one of my favorite tracks on here. Something about it reminds me of a later-era VU track (probably because I see many similarities between Mark and Reed's vocals). It's a track with a comforting message but above all else, it's the incredible sounding instrumentation and the patient build-up over its 8-and-a-half-minute runtime. There's almost an ambient element to the serene latter half with the dusty drum loop, guitar plucking, and dreamy synth work. My favourite song though has to be the title track. It's a slow-building, synth-backed song with probably my favorite lyrics by Mark here. Mark's tribute about recovering war-torn individuals or battle-ravaged lands is marked with surreal astronomic imagery relating to the difficulty of overcoming one's self. It's also sprinkled with messages calling for peace in the world by putting everyone's sense of individualism into a grand-scheme perspective. Nothing to dislike about this track, it's a gorgeous closer. Some other favorite production moments are the strange tribal drums on "Ride Across the River" and the sudden crashing guitar chords on "The Man's Too Strong". I will say though, listening to this thing, you tend to notice all the worst tropes and staples of 80s popular music. I also feel like a lot of the songs after the first three tend to be less memorable (aside from the couple I mentioned). Aside from that though, this was still a highly enjoyable first listen.

I will never understand why Mark had to put a slur in Money for Nothing. Yes, I know the backstory. Still doesn't make sense. That aside, it's the Dire Straits.
