Reviews (page 2 of 13)

Not really a fan of this one, I knew of North American Scum already but the rest of the tracks all drone on for at least 2 minutes longer than necessary.

Endlessly irritating. There is nothing redeeming to repeating the same stupid little snippet a million times in an 8 minute song. The vocals usually make things worse. I don't have the patience to listen to this album today. Other days I might suffer through it. Update: I gave this another attempt a day later. It still sucks.

brother i dont even know when or where someone would actively choose to listen to this, if this starts playing in a bar u would go out for a cig I think if you decide to bust this one out at a party u get shot immediately

The sound of a million adverts. No depth. Like all adverts they can be skipped

Annoying

By golly, I really did not like this album. Yuck. Some of the songwriting is good, but even then, the background instrumentals are just awful. I don't like the looping approach taken on a lot of these songs. The songs will start by slowly adding each layer, and then the song is just kind of stuck with that as it goes on. It can't really change much from then on. The melody will change, and they might add another layer, but that's it. I liked the last song okay I guess, although it was off to a rocky start. The second to last song though...ugh. Too long, and very bad.

It was good length for an album. Has a lot of good songs. Didn't realise I know one of the songs from this.

Listening to this made me feel really cool.

making my triumphant return because arkady told me about today's album. an all-timer, easily 5 stars. lcd sound system is very high school to me, but in all the best ways. this album embodies the total non-chalant try-hard cool of teenagerdom. i was born at exactly the right time to feel this way. like nothing i had ever heard before, but also a perfect epitome of electronic indie of the late 2000s/early 2010s, with that kind of 80s new wave flair. someone great being used in gossip girl 1x12, thank you for introducing me to this album! (wrote this whole review forgetting about the literal lyrics of sound of silver, so well done on that i guess)

Get innocuous! 4.5/5 Time to get away 5/5 North american scum 4.5/5 Someone great 5/5 All my friends 5/5 Us v them 5/5 Watch the tapes 5/5 Sound of silver 4/5 New york i love you but you're bringing me down 5/5

Déjà connu. Un album excellent avec de nombreux hits 9/10

Big time bangers, a true classic that's both very of its time but never really dated. I've listened to this so many times and I still enjoy it every time. It's just fun init, really really really good tunes, sharp lyrics, wry wit. Everything ya want in an indie pop album.

Ummmm...I quite enjoyed this album!! New York I love you but you're bringing me down was a nice change of pace from the other songs. New favorite band!!

Going to give this a 5. Solid throughout and a lot of catchy songs

92/100 One of the last things I would usually consider myself is a dance punk fan but damn bro this album might have changed that. I never thought I would like dance music at all actually. I used to be really into disco but we won't talk about that era. Anyways this is my first LCD Soundsystem album after trying to get into them a couple years ago when someone said they were like talking heads. This is the farthest thing from that ever actually but I don't think they were referring to this album. It's nonstop bangers I saved the whole fuckin thing and am currently relistening to it as I write this review. What an absolute beast of an electronic album it never stops hitting and hitting you don't get a break here. Some people I've seen have said that leads the album to get repetitive easily, which in the case of others like it I could see due to the 7-8 minute runtime on some of these songs. HOWEVER, that is not the case here. These songs are always fun, always catchy, and always a joy to be bumping your head to. This is the kind of music I want to be listening to, tracks and albums from genres I never would've considered, but now am happy to be listening to. Great stuff all around, and I will definitely be listening to more from them. Also feel the need to mention the closer, as it is a piano ballad that is nothing like the rest of the album, but because I fuck with piano so much I love that shit. Seems like lots of other people do too considering the 50 mil listens on spotify and 95 on here. It's in my top 3 on the album alongside All My Friends and the opener Get Innocuous! Really cool album yeah I dig this man

I'm sure many many people will find this annoyingly shouty and bleepy. And it is! But it's exactly my kind of shouty and bleepy. I love it!

Love him and love his wine taste

YIPPIE!! it was so cool to hear where a lot of my fav bands get their influence from. Incredible fun! 9/10

LCD Soundsystem are always amazing.

Pander to me

Incredible

5/5. This record and its follow up “This is Happening” are likely among my most listened albums of all time and in my opinion they probably are the peak of the 2000’s indie boom. Once those drums really kick in on opener “Get Innocuous!” You’ll know you’re in good hands. and the album is chalked full of amazing grooves like that. However where this album really becomes an all timer is in the middle with the three track run of “Someone Great”, “All my Friends” and “Us V. Them.” “Someone Great” is likely the most emotionally potent song in the LCD Soundsystem catalogue, being a tribute to frontman James Murphy’s therapist who took their own life. Lots of gut-punching lines about the moments leading up to him getting the news and the aftermath of it all. Then right after is “All my Friends” which has an almost Krautrock like repetition to it, and sees someone at a party trying to reconnect with old friends. It also contains my favorite LCD Soundsystem line “I wouldn’t trade one stupid decision for another 5 years of life.” It also just has a fantastic build. Then there is “Us V. them” which has the best groove on the album. And though those three are all timers, the rest of this album is stacked too. I love the synth lines of “Time to Get Away” and the more fast paced “watch the tapes.” Then there is also the closer “New York I love you, but you’re bringing me down” which mostly ditches the electronics and forms a fantastic piano led ballad to close the album out.

so sick. hypnotic synth. favorite song: someone great.

I loved this when it came out. Going in again, it brought back all the excitement from when it was released in the aughts. I don't think there's a filler tune, all bangers but especially the title track and Us V Them, the latter causing any normal human to find it impossible to sit still.

Fabulous. Infectious. Great energy. Classic all around.

Highlights: Get Innocuous, Time to Get Away, North American Scum, Someone Great, Us V Them, Watch the Tapes, New York I Love You Cool and hip. Instant classic because it respects the rule of more cowbell. Loved the sound, didn't pay much mind to the lyrics.

LCD soundsystem sounds like early 2000’s Franz Ferdinand Interpol type shit but with Talking Heads erratic shit and also like b52’s blondie but then it’s electronic also. I absolute loved it

A formative album for me. Sound of Silver works because it’s not just a great dance record. It has real emotional weight underneath it. There’s a mix of joy, nostalgia, anxiety, and sincerity that makes the album feel deeply human without losing its infectious energy. “All My Friends” is the standout and one of my all time favorite tracks. "North American Scum" will always make me think of listening to Ron and Fez while delivering pizzas back in the day. This is a beautiful, fun no skip record. 5/5.

I really enjoyed this. He does a great job writing these and I think every track is colorful and enjoyable. It's sad and introspective and meloncholic and I eat shit like that up. He does a great job painting emotions and feelings. Never took the time to understand it before tbh. I do think the quality is lacking a little, and I get that's the point... it feels more authentic that way. But idk, the tracking just feels so compressed together and his voice isn't incredible (conflicted about saying that because he even agrees). I have a lot to say about All My Friends (I pared this down a bit). It's abosultely dripping with nostalgia and that really does something for me, especially in this phase of life. The build is incredible, you can feel the frustation of growing up and missing your friends and regretting not being present in it more. The lyrics just hit and it resonates immensely with me. By the last bit I'm ready to burn it down... but I feel like the climax is a bit of a let down. I want that cathartic release of saddness and meloncoly and regret, kick me right in the balls with it. It just doesn't quite get there in my opinion. But I bet it goes so hard live. Really enjoyed it, just think it could be better. Feel free to tell me I'm an idiot and that's the whole point though. I do think the quality is a little lacking as well, every thing seems pretty compressed and there's not a ton of room between things. Wasn't sure where to put this one tbh, I really wanted it to be a True Five... but I think I've found enough nitpicks with it that it's a 4.5/5. stand outs: Get Innocuous!, Someone Great, All My Friends, Us V Them.

rounding up a bit, prob more a high 4 but YESSSSSSSSS !!!!!! MORE OF THIS ‼️‼️‼️ this is such an iconic album, forgot how much i love lcd soundsystem <33

What a great album. Someone great right into All my Friends is just incredible.

LOVE THIS ALBUM!! the drum samples are incredible, i love the vocals too! all my friends is like a top 50 song ever, i think north american scum is incredible too. So awesome.

It's their best album, what else could I give it?

one of my personal favourites, im such a sucker for good dance/post-punk so this is right up my alley and the indie sleaze feeling is so prominent here it basically transports you to 2010 10/10 Favourite: All My Friends Least Favourite: None

Every day I click on the link that will show me my listening assignment for the day, and some days when I see it I go "oh, YEAH!" because I am so happy about it. This was one of those days. I played the hell out of this album when it first came out.

Enjoyable listen! Sound of Silver & Time to Get Away were highlights for me.

One of the greatest house albums out there!

Amazing. New fave

Best album ever

One of my all-timers

At least for me the opening of the first song feels designed in a lab to make me grin.

James Murphy is one of my favorite lyricists of all time. Number one being Nick Cave. But James Murphy knows how to write about the human psyche in a way that bites you and then licks your wounds without relying on overly verbose prose. Very unlike my thoughts of this album. Sound of Silver is devastating. And fun. It’s incredibly personal. It speaks like a page in a diary entry and it moves like wildfire. I am a much better person because of the existence of this album. I think we all are.

Which LCD Soundsystem album is the best? Depends on my mood, but this one is often a contender. If you get the chance to see them live, you should; you'll see that this album continues to be strongly represented in their live sets, as it has been since its debut.

Faves: Someone Great Sound of Silver

This recording breathes bravado. There’s no moment that isn’t completely confident. Not a single second where the artists doubt that they’re giving you the most awesome and perfect version of this idea. A dance album. An electro freakout. A prototype for so much Indy and pop music to come. Love it.

-recently relistened to their self-titled but haven't listened to much else by them, excited to hear more! -"get innocuous!" is great. playful and fun and opens up the album in a really lovely way. -"north american scum" BANGER. -just one hit after the other w this album... "someone great" is wonderful + beautiful + the other adjectives. -i love this album!!! -Sound Of Silver Talk To Me Makes You Want To Feel Like A Teenager Until You Remember The Feelings Of A Real Life Emotional Teenager Then You Think Again. -"new york i love you but you're bringing me down" so incredibly INCREDIBLY good. hits like a TRUCK in the BEST WAY.

Ridiculous

YES! ABSOLUTELY!

already know and love the album, always glad to relisten tho <3

This album is truly something outstanding. Not because it's great – which isn't, sure there are lower moments in the album – but because it's a very interesting record, and a very enjoyable one too. The melancholic jazzy ending, which somehow becomes a rock ballad is a fantastic way of closing a very energetic album. The mixture between electronic music, and some rock and even disco songs is something fascinating. And it's very cohesive, even in the sound, which is something very difficult in such an eclectic album. The first tracks are great, fantastic, and it makes the following part of the record to be less enchanting. But, still, it's a pretty solid one, and an album that is both, enjoyable and very interesting. I've found its sound so bold and authentic (and, at the same time, so full of influences) that it's been mesmerising and a lovely musical experience.

Not just silver, this is gold standard.

The combination of electronic and funk carved a neural pathway in my brain that makes me want to know everything about this band. Excited to deep dive further, and looking up tour dates next

Tan bueno que podria morir

New York I Love you- But you’re Bringing Me Down! New York’s the greatest if you get someone to pay the rent - I love James Murphy. He’s got that particularly - North American- sense of humor and irony that can be found in a band like the Violent Femmes or The Magnetic Fields- sometimes obnoxious, perhaps a bit in your face, musically astute and gleeful. I saw a review claiming the band’s use of the cow bell was not responsible. Pat Mahoney IS certainly capable of driving a cow bell and a whole percussion machine right off stage and over to my house where he can play with Daft Punk! 5 Boolean: yes, though this album never has soundtracked more than my morning workouts and I have no stories of debauchery and drug use about which to reminisce, it remains a favorite listen as the years pile up and I get closer to death.

All My Friends er den bedste sang!

Bangers from start to finish.

Talking Heads and Depeche Mode have a baby with an early 2K hipster edge? Yes please! Pop, funk, rock, melodic, endlessly hooky…not a weak second.

Strong album. It has some clunkers, but by and large very enjoyable.

Contains a baffling amount of all-timers, perfecting their formula for years to come. All My Friends is one of my top 5 songs of all time, equally heartbreaking, euphoric, life-affirming, funny and dance/jump/thrashable.

Що це? Прикольний гурт.

Love this album! always take me to my 20's

Everything is right with this album.

Dette når sitt climax på 1-2 punchen Someone Great / All of My Friends.

This one is in regular rotation

I have always liked LCD Soundsystem but never really held them in super high regard. Listening to this album front to back changed this perception. Sound of Silver had me locked in from beginning to end. The song structures can be pretty simple and obviously rely heavily on loops and repetition but I can't help but fall into a trance listening to this. There's also a bit of vintage nostalgia in here and I think the use of analog instruments play into this. I think this music is just old enough and unique enough that it kind of acts as a time capsule to a scene I hadn't really realized is now pretty far gone.

The nostalgia hits hard on this one as it was one of the first albums that got me to take off my classic rock blinders. It's not something I really revisit often now, but North American Scum, All My Friends, and New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down are still some of my all time favourite tracks. Also, I have to acknowledge the generator calling me out on my hypocrisy. I literally said in my review of Nightmares on Wax yesterday that it probably says something about me that I like the laid back dub based electronica and can't stand dance based electronica. Well, I admit, Sound of Silver is fully rooted in dance based electronica, but in my defense, it's a lot less "unc-unc-unc, let's get the party started" and a lot more in line with what you get from dub. There are clear influences of krautrock and even Bowie and I am much more likely to throw this on and sit back to listen to it on a pair of nice headphones in a hypnotic trance than I am to hear it in a club.

When to listen: feeling indie but want to bop as well. Really enjoyed this, and obviously New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down is iconique.

album is fun and dynamic and yeah no it is a 5

fuck it i know im biased towards stuff i already listen to but CMON man

Demographically I shouldn't like this, but I really do.

Beautiful; Stunning, bold, rhythmic, catchy - but not cliché. This is an excellent effort and a timeless classic from one of the biggest, nasiest, greeziest shit bags to ever move from New Jersey to New York and I adore it.

Somehow manages to be goofy and heartfelt at the same time. It sounds like it was written by a drake-esque goober in his dinky workshop gluing and duct taping trinkets to create poetry.

NORTH AMERICAN SCUM

I probably would have been insufferable if I discovered lcd sound system earlier in my life mostly because James Murphy is insufferable. But dang do I love this music!

Super cool

such a fucking great album. I find LCD Soundsystem to be a group that makes really engaging and energetic music. But more than that, is the emotion and power that their anthemic songs have. Is sonically optimistic, and with funny and powerful lyrics. I think that the ability to make so much music that is easy to remember, has to do with how even if you think some parts are simple or easy, they are well crafted and well thought songs. And here, in a cohesive and well integrated way, all of their songs work. The way they managed to encapsulate and dictate the optimistic feeling of the 2000s is why every time i listen to All My Friends or Us V Them, i imagine a 2000s movie. Not because they were destined to be overused as music for media, but for how powerful and reaching their music is. Is hard not to like this or to remember it. Really good music.

Great tracks throughout. Lots of dancing opportunities. Even when this is probably my least favourite of their allbums

A classic. I loved the first LCD album. On first listen I remember thinking "this is almost as good". By the third listen I knew it was even better. Every track is wonderful, and even though they're very clear about who they rip off, it's like a collage of all the best music ever written. I don't think it can be faulted. Straight 5.

One the best albums ever

YET ANOTHER 5/5. It’d been a while since i’ve done this one front to back and wow it still BANGS. The nearly hour runtime goes by so quickly.

Rating: 9/10 A great achievement of 2000’s alternative music that feels both contemporary and like worship of 80’s electronic dance and post-punk flavor with its genre blending. I love the upbeat dance-y rhythms juxtaposed with the sarcastic and existential lyrics that feel related to the anxieties of growing up and getting older (in New York). Bangers throughout, with almost entirely amazing songs besides the more middling Watch the Tapes and a personal not favorite in Us V. Them. Fantastic opening and closing tracks with the amazing All My Friends in the middle. I’ve decided it’s a 5, especially because their next album is sadly missing from this list.

Every song bangs so god damn hard. All My Friends is an all-timer for sure. One of the greats of the 00s! 9/10

00s revival of 80s synthy post punk turned into dance music - the best heir to New Order. There's a surprisingly tender genuine break up song and a couple of amazing burnout/hangover songs - the whole thing is a beautifully bittersweet combination of lonely and party music.

LCD Soundsystem Sound of Silver is very well mastered. The sound design really allowed for the percussion to stand out. I unfortunately only listened to the last half of the album with headphones and it was incredible. The first half I listened off my phone speaker in the morning prior to heading to the gym to prepare for youth western regional’s. Half paying attention while connecting with my colleague who arrived in the middle of the night. I’ll have to see if I have time to return to the entire album in one play through in the near future. Winding down the busy day of competition prep while listening to this at the Airbnb was fantastic.

In my humble opinion one of the best albums ever made. I shit you not. Every song is brilliant, the feel is incredible, the percussion fantastic, the lyrics funny and sad in equal measure. So good. North American scum is a disco classic. Someone great is utterly gorgeous. Stone cold classic

What was I listening to in 2007 and why wasn't it this? Incredible - gives the same joyful vibes as Talking Heads, Bowie and Arcade Fire, without plagiarising them or sounding like too much of a tribute.

very talking heads-y, reminds me a lot of Remain in Light. I LOVE THIS ALBUM. Fav Song: New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down Least Fav: Sound of Silver

LCD Soundsystem feels old and new at the same time. A very unique band that makes unique music. My favourite songs have this slowly rising tension in them. Like emotions welling up, refusing to be ignored any longer before exploding in a wide array of colours. The kind of music to play while cycling home from a party at 5 in the morning while the sun is slowly rising. That being said, I need to be in a very specific mood to listen to their music. Outside that mood, their music is repetetive. When I am in the correct mood however, it sweeps me away.

This is a pure nostalgia rating for me. I loved this album and LCD, and it was primed for being a soundtrack to my college years. Does James Murphy pretty shamelessly rip off sounds from his record collection? Absolutely. But he does it in a way that is fantastically fun.

Glad to see some LCD on this list. Say what you want about them now but that initial 3 album run is absolutely generational and this is easily the best record to come out of that. This is quite possibly the best mix of dance, rock and electronic music that there's ever been. Every single song here is great and there's a few which are among the best songs I've ever heard. I love how varied this album is too, with there being a strong mix of the endlessly groovy danceable tracks like Time To Get Away, Us v Them and Get Innocuous and the slower and more introspective songs like Someone Great and All My Friends. Despite the lengthy run times of some of these songs I never found myself bored or ready for them to end. One thing I've noticed when listening to LCD, especially on their first 3 albums, is that they're able to craft these really long songs that just lock you into a catchy groove for 7 or 8 minutes and they do that multiple times across this album on some of the best tracks. Overall, I think this album is basically almost flawless. There's perhaps one song here that's not as good as the rest but this album is so consistently phenomenal outside of that, that i don't think it's too big of a deal. A near perfect album for the most part and one of my favourites ever. Fav Songs: All, but specifically All My Friends, Someone Great, New York I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down, Time To Get Away and North American Scum Least Fav: None but if had to pick, Sound of Silver 9.8/10

buenisimo, puro ritmo

My 100th album here and also one of my favorites. I’ve seen LCD Soundsystem live 5 times and I think you could make a case for each of their LPs being their best, but I’m resigned to this one claiming the distinction, since it filled with a dense array of heaters that became synonymous with the band if not with NYC in the late 2000s and early 2010s. A true time capsule, I bought this at a used CD store in a strip mall in 2007, a fact I think James Murphy would appreciate.

Thank god

My milennialness is showing, I remember playing this album quite a lot in high school. This album is nearly 20 years old and still evokes nostalgia not just through the music influences James Murphy wears on his sleeve but through how it makes you feel. Dancing, drinking and sighing and other hangover blues, back to more dancing and something very melancholic. LCD Soundsystem at their finest.

Shit like this makes me wish I were an elder millennial

It’s this kind of “repetition” that I love to hear in a song; those rhythms and sequences are deeply hypnotic; I can’t stop banging my head - it’s totally addictive :-) A killer beat, man, an absolute banger :-D 10/10

A near-perfect album

Could only be improved by listening/dancing to this in a big top on a sunny evening

One of my favorite albums ever. Full of brilliant and sometimes totally different tracks. All my friends is a national anthem for middle aged hipsters like me.

LCD Soundsystem will never not be great

I wish I remembered that I like these guys more often

This album has Someone Great, one of the best songs of all time, followed by All My Friends, which is THE best song of all time

This came at the exact moment I needed it.

MOAR COWBELL. Seriously though... take some French house and Detroit techno, filter though some mid-2000s Brooklyn bands (thinking of you, !!!), add cowbell, and a good dose of genX angst. It speaks to me.

Another sing-along record! So many songs I love on here: "North American Scum," "Someone Great," "All My Friends," "New York I Love You [etc.]"; I love this record. There are so many memorable lyrics on this album that I feel like listing them all would make this review go to 3 pages. "Someone Great" and "All My Friends" always make me cry because they feel so true. There are a couple songs that aren't all that compelling lyrically (e.g., Us v. Them), but they make up for it with something interesting in the drums or other instrumentation. (OK, "Watch the Tapes" is a bit of a dud that I often skip, but I think the rest of it makes up for it.) I still listen to this record a lot, and always enjoy it: 5 stars

All My Friends. One of the great songs of this century so far. They came along when I wasn't really listening to much new music, so didn't hear it at the time, but their Glastonbury performance the other year was amazing. I really like this album.

good, obviously. all my friends is genuinely the most satisfying song ever recorded.

This was one of, if not THE tippy top, top albums of the year for 2025. I've listened to LCD for a while but I heard Someone Great on the radio and it embedded itself in my head and never left. Today I'm happy for another excuse to listen! This is a mixed bag album. You could argue it doesn't have a strong set of songs as maybe half are nothing special, but the other half!... All My Friends has been listened to hell and back. North American Scum is such a banger. And New York I Love You is one of the best closers to any album. Maybe it's a generous 5 as a whole but I'd be a liar if I didn't rate it by the top of my list. Highlight: I'd normally say Someone Great but on this listen it was All My Friends. When that song hits it truly hits.

Wonderful artist! Already saved some songs to my playlists. So energetic!

"north american scum", "all my friends", and "new york, i love you but you're bringing me down" are highlights. solid discography. never listened to "american dream" tho.

A few years ago I read a memoir by a major figure in American history that really moved me. It made me feel as if I should have read it in school, and actually that my life was less than it should have been because I hadn’t encountered it sooner. Though not quite as profound, I got the same feeling today listening to LCD Soundsystem, which really surprised me. I know the band, the story, the most popular songs, but when they were gaining popularity I was in grad school and mostly checked out of new music. I figured they were a band for other, younger folks. But going through this album today I immediately felt the connection with lots of music that is central to who I am, like Bowie’s Low and Let’s Dance. I didn’t hear any of that until listening in album form. Even the songs I had heard before felt different, which I’ve experienced a few times. Anyway, it feels like something that went wrong in the past has now been set right, and I’m a fan as I should have been in the past

Album so good it makes em hyperfixate and hyperventilate every time

Perfect fucking album

Seriously, this is an UTTER CLASSIC. Good timing on this one since I'm going to Chicago to see them this weekend. the middle section of this album (Someone Great, All My Friends, Us v Them, Watch the Tapes) is unbeatable.

Every single track on here is an anthem. “North American Scum” is perennially relevant to my life. This album felt like a revelation when it came out and I can’t even say it makes me feel nostalgic only because I still listen to many of its songs pretty often. The tone of each track varies widely, but there’s always driving beat tying it all together. Just enough cowbell. Bold to have a dirge dedicated to NYC as the closing track instead of the title song. Definitely a top 100 album, maybe even top 25.

I liked the first 3 songs but the rest of the album really won me over

Firefighters came through the lobby of my work with a stretcher right as I finished listening to Someone Great. I nervously watched a young man, clearly out of it but otherwise alright, be loaded into an ambulance and escorted away. A couple trainers set his bags on the side of my front desk to search through them for his car keys. From the opening moments, I felt pretty sure that I would enjoy this album; Get Innocuous! begins the album with a slow electronic buildup a la Dance Yrself Clean, the intro to their next album which I am already a big fan of. The blend of indie Rock, electropop, and electronic house music, plus whatever other musical influences or random instruments the band wants to incorporate, come together to make LCD Soundsystem the exact right amount of eclectic for my brain. I also the way James Murphy uses his voice, balancing a passable amount of melodic performance with a relatable near-spoken dialect, occasionally broken up with moments of high-pitched breaks that land on account of the sheer energy he puts into them. The band also has a knack for writing lyrics that capture the specific experience of living in America as a disenchanted youth struggling to grow up and make a life for yourself despite the world around us, in a way that still retains an element of wit and humor. I am always a sucker for art which conveys sincerity through a mask of irreverence, and LCD Soundsystem seems to have that emotion tightly dialed in at exactly the right level for me. Highlights: Get Innocuous!, Time to Get Away, North American Scum, Someone Great, All My Friends, Us V Them, Watch the Tapes, Sound of Silver, New York, I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down

Electro dance classic

nice and groovy. some of the songs can be a bit long and repetitive and i think about lowering my score but then a banger comes on fav song: North American Scum

11/10 This is the perfect soundtrack to pretty much anything

First foray back in the day to lcd. All my friends vid was peak. Great buildup and sustained throughout, proper comedown with ny

I have had the last song of this album on my playlist for a very long time, but I had no idea that the rest of this album was as good as it is. House music vibes with alternative and a little bit of funk. Just an incredibly interesting vibe. Absolute treat of an album.

Wow what an amazing surprise. I only ever knew the final track and I've wanted to check out the rest of the album, but I didn't expect it to be that good! Def gonna be a buy on vinyl.

None of my favorite LCD Soundsystem songs are on this album, and yet it might be my favorite album of theirs.

5 - okay i have to do it. a 5. a rare 5. This is one of the most iconic and prolific albums to come when and where it did, ESPECIALLY if you live in NY. I have personally have had some of my favorite moments listening to live music during 2 of the songs on this album. I don't think its perfect, but goddamn it sure is close. Fav songs: Get Innoculous! , North American Scum , Someone Great , All My Friends , NY I Love You...

Iconic. A perfect album.

One of the best albums ever

Godt dance rock album.

Easy recipe to get five stars from me: Step 1: Play the A and E notes on a piano ad infinitum. Step 2: Add drums Step 3: Write a few thoughts down on how hanging out can take on different significance as you get older. and that's it! Thanks, Chef James Murphy!

I’ve given this 5 stars but want to acknowledge that not every track is a 5 star track. Time to Get Away and Sound of Silver aren’t particularly strong even within LCDs own catalogue never mind compared with other artists. But the middle 1-2 punch of Someone Great and All My Friends more than compensates and are probably LCDs best tracks. The rest are 4 stars. And it’s impossible to listen to Get Innocuous without imagining I’m Nico Bellic walking through Liberty City.

One of my favorite bands. And I'd argue one of the most important bands of the last 20 years. I can never pick a favorite album but they're all 5 stars in my book! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Massive album, superb.

Finalmente um álbum realmente clássico. James Murphy no seu ápice criativo. Hino dos millennials.

Things I love about this album: It sounds like it could have come out last year, it’s crazy this was a 2007 release. North American Scum is actually brilliant because I often think they are British for some reason. This is one of the few albums I owned that my mom actually enjoyed and didn’t think was just annoying noise. All My Friends is pretty much a perfect song, it’s a triumph. New York I Love You, but You’re Bringing Me Down will forever remind me of a passive aggressive post my ex made featuring this song because I said the White Stripes were overrated and she took it as a personal attack. I was New York in that context. That’s so funny in hindsight.

Hey, this rules.

Man I adore this record. So many memories of being at parties with one LCD tune or another in the background. All My Friends is quite simply one of the greatest songs ever written.

(100/100)

BUENISIMO

I think nostalgia might be a factor here, but I have always loved this album. It has incredible scope in term of range, an exquisite sound pallet, things to say and ambition in terms of sound. Sure, it might be a bit messy and some songs hit less for me than others, but it is everything I could want in an album. After spending the day with it, I think it has aged a bit, as it is bound to do, but it still slaps.

The first time I listened to this was because of a Stephen King novel. In Under the Dome one of the characters has this song playing as his wife bleeds out next to him in the kitchen. It doesn't fit the situation. But it did introduce me to these monsters of electronica. Heavy hitters on North Amerrican Scum, All My Friends, and Someone Great.

So, I will admit I am a huge LCD Soundsystem fan. I already own this on vinyl and I would venture to say this may be my favorite of the bunch. There are probably 6 songs from this album in my top 10 favorite LCD tracks. Get Innocuous sets the mood and it is infectious electronic dance punk! I love the steady beats throughout the songs with the electronics and other bits dancing around them creating a fantastic sound. Then throw in Someone Great, All My Friends and North American Scum it is a very complete album. Throw this one on and get ready to freak out!

A whole new, weird world of music. Thankfully, I'm digging this

north american scum is EXACTLY what the dare sounds like!!!! all my friends sounds like the blueprint for the 1975!! it's literally sex x the 1975 from being funny in a foreign language. YOOOOOO i just googled it and apparently matty said it's his favorite song ever and it "informs everything he does". the most fun a girl can have is finding parallels, noticing patterns, making connections, contemplating. wow this is one of the best ones yet i looove

I've listened to this one a lot over the years. Question is, do I love it? Yes. Yes I do. Excellent album. We are North Americans!

Masterpiece

I have been meaning to listen to LCD Soundsystem for a while, and I am glad I did.

WOOOOOOOOO

I always appreciate a reprieve for an album that I a) really like and b) already own. This is LCD Soundsystem's best, almost wall-to-wall bangers. "All My Friends" is their best song, and seeing them play it at Pitchfork in 2007 is one of my all-time favorite live moments. Even with the clunky "New York I Love You..." this gets five stars from me.

A great record. Pieces of Bowie, the best parts of disco, and right on the edge early 2000s indie. Brought back some great memories of a really magical time.

I love this album.

Really good not something i would usually listen to but it didn't disappoint! New york i love but your bringing me down is peak!! Gives early 2000s preteen show soundtrack in the best way and makes me want to dance!!

I LOVE THIS

New York is probably one of the best closers I've heard.

All My Friends is one of the greatest songs of all time, so the rest of the album really just needs to be replacement level. But it goes beyond that - North American Scum, Someone Great, New York I Love You are all fantastic and the rest are solid electronic.

LCD Soundsystem is the exception to my general dislike of the electronic genre. While there is repetition, the songs are distinct and individual and interesting. Plus, I love James Murphy's voice. Watch the Tapes is my favorite.

i fuck with this

Dance away the pain.

Lot of fun

I hate spotify. Only using it becouse I want to listen to diffrent album every day and plus I don't have anything to listen on. I am think of bying an ipod or burning cd.

As the quality of both the sound system and copies of the music increase over the years I’m still spotting little new elements in this album. One of my all time favourites.

A modern classic. Almost 20 years old is still modern right?

Top tier

Love Love Love 5*

i loved itttt!!! it was really fun and i enjoyed most of the songs 😛.

perfect

LCD soundsystem will forever be life changing. Already heard a couple songs from this album but never fully listened. My faves still manage to stay those songs I had heard before: all my friends and someone great

Sound Of Silver, Talk To Me 1001 Albums Generator 198 (1/5/2025) One of my biggest blindspots, given the type of music I tend to enjoy, is LCD Soundsystem. I've been aware of them as alternative dance/indie darlings, but have never knowingly listened to them. Oddly, I did have New York, I Love You liked on Spotify, but I don't know when I had listened to it. Anyway, this album is fucking awesome. The first three songs are all really strange and are way more on the "electronica" side of indietronica. Get Innocuous! kind of sounds like a lost David Bowie recording, but North American Scum reassures that we are, in fact, listening to an American band. After these opening three, the album really starts to fall into place with three beautifully building songs. Someone Great is probably my favorite song on the album; the synth work here and the heavily sidechained pads build into a beautiful tapestry. All My Friends is also amazing and is the most popular song on the album. This (along with the closing track) lean much more on the "indie" side of indietronica. Us V Them grew on me throughout its runtime on first listen and by the second listen, I was really into it. It is such a slow burn, but it's so good and totally justifies its length. The final three songs close out the album in a really strange way. Watch The Tapes is the only song that I don't really like, and Sound Of Silver is one that I didn't like on my first listen, but by the second time around, I was chanting the refrain along with it. New York, I Love You is a really slow, somber end to an album that has a lot of energy, but it is quite a beautiful song. Sound Of Silver did not disappoint at all and is one of my favorite albums I have found as a result of this challenge. 4.5/5, rounded up to a 5. Favs: Get Innocuous! Someone Great All My Friends Least Fav: Watch The Tapes

This album is strange to me, very catchy and produced greatly with lots of fun sounds, and this really odd air around the whole thing. Maybe that's just how I always feel with LCD Soundsystem, but I tend to really like them. The closing track is beautiful but I much prefer with the Miles Davis duet which went viral on youtube years ago

The best LCD Soundsystem album

this was excellent

I've never listened to LCD before, I assumed it was of a completely different genre. In this album I hear an amalgamation of some of my favourite artists, past and present. I hear Talking heads to Pavement, to Geese, Alex G and a ton of others. I can see how this was a foundational album to the hipster/indie 2010s wave that came during shortly after. My Highlights were: Someone Great and New York, I Love You (this made it onto my greatest songs of all time playlist)

Not enough stars for this one.

Highly enjoyable, each track offers something different

AMAAAAZING

This is why I am doing this challenge: to hear albums and artists that I have never heard before and exposing myself to those hidden talents. Wow, this album really spoke to me and I had not an inkling of knowledge about LCD Soundsystem. It really is up to par with the other 5 star albums that I have reviewed on here.

Did not really give this much of a rating when I first listened, but it's grown on me steadily. Probably his best album and I can listen to it almost anytime. Favorite Songs: Get Innocuous!, Us v Them

holy shit this was crazy watch the tapes and sound of silver were my favourite i’ve never heard music like this before made me want to dance

I really liked this! It feels like a little Mountain Goats like, and had a song about North America I loved

#214/1001. I’m Losing my edge, but I was there! I was the first to play LCD Soundsystem to the art school students here on the Arctic Circle in 2005. I was there as a computer virus as they released this album on MySpace in 2007! I remixed My Friends for the President of Finland's secret party on new year's eve 2008, and then later a new remix at the prime minister's infamous summer party (sorry Sanna, shouldn't have posted those photos to IG). I'm losing my edge, couldn't do the 45h 33min run anymore, non-stop. I've been losing my edge, since I still play LCD SS. Or am I? DJ's always know the best dance-punk-electronic-rock music. This is my musical history in one album mixed up to make you all dance. I was there!

I love this album. It’s one of the millennial classics if you ask me. But I am extremely biased — this album came out the year I went to college. I felt so mature listening to “Someone Great” after years of being into emo and screamo. “All My Friends” introduced us to the nostalgia that our generation would embrace and hold tight. “Sound of Silver” gave me a hook to sing so I could distinguish myself from the teenagers. I dunno, I think all the beats are great. The songs are fun and wistful and mean something. Must-listen #267.

I listened to this after I listened to their other album on the list about 400 albums ago. Upbeat and enjoyable. I don't think this will be in my rotation anytime soon but it was a solid album for today.

Damn good album

LOVE THIS ALBUM

Fuck it, blir en femma!

Roskilde 2016, take me back! Banger efter banger. Ibland får varje instrument maximalt med space, ibland flyter allt ihop. Som lök på murphy-laxen är ju många av texterna kul! Until you remember the feelings of a real live emotional teenager!

LCD Soundsystem is maybe one of my favourite bands ever. i assume we have all listened to this album, or at least all of these songs, therefore i have no other comments than "PERFECTION". if i could give this a 6 i would.

Sound of Silver... more like Sound of Gold 'cause this album is so freakin' good. The double meaning of the album title: Silver, meaning second best and Silver, meaning greys (aka becoming old) describes the themes of the album really well. Some tracks ("All My Friends", "Sound of Silver", "Someone Great") tackle nostalgia and wishing to go back to simpler times, while others ("Us v Them", "NYILYBYBMD") tackle the feeling of always being in competition and not feeling good enough. The album starts off with "Get Innocuous!", which builds in such a lovely way, slowly adding instruments over time, until the piano enters in and the main groove settles in. Whilst being an incredible and really danceable electronic track, its lyrics also paint a picture of artist burnout, only having one chance to make it, and having to compromise your true self for the public eye. "North American Scum" (to my ears) is a satire that pokes fun at extremely prideful North Americans who believe there's no better place, and are ignorant of what is happening in the rest of the world. I guess this rings true now more than ever because of you-know-who. It's then followed up by "Someone Great," which shows a completely different mood. This is where the album takes a more nostalgic/reminiscent side, and James Murphy is caught wishing he could go back to better times, and be with his “someone great” once more. He tries to move forward, but no one else really compares. This song also sets the stage amazingly for the absolutely incredible track that follows it. "All My Friends." I could literally write an entire review on this song alone. This is one of those songs (at least for me) that you'll listen to on a whim years and years further on into your life, and instantly get transported back to the time you first heard it. The way it builds throughout the entire song and captures that feeling of nostalgia and recounting memories is just perfect. I absolutely love the chorus lyrics, ("You spent the first five years trying to get with the plan / And the next five years trying to be with your friends again / Oh, you're talking forty-five turns just as fast as you can / Yeah, I know it gets tired, but it's better when we pretend"), which paint a picture of someone conflicted between feeling like they're "running out of time" in their journey through life (trying to "get with the plan" that society sets out for us in our lives), but also wanting to stay back and "be with their friends" just one more time. As someone going to college next year, and is uncertain as to what their life is going to be like, this rings true for me. Maybe I don't wanna grow up just yet. "Us v Them" continues the feelings of competition heard in the first bits of the album. Constantly having to be in competition with everything over and over and over again, while trying to "make it big," I feel, can get quite exhausting. It can instil feelings of not being good enough that may drive someone into a state of pessimism ("Cloud, block out the sun / Over me, Over me"). The repetitive nature of the instrumental paint this picture of constantly being at arms: being in a war between Us... and Them... Over and Over again. If "All My Friends" is a set of rose-tinted glasses, "Sound of Silver" rips them right off. It describes the dangers of nostalgia and suggests that one can glorify their past too much, only taking into consideration the good parts, while leaving out the bad parts entirely, which can lead to them to losing focus of their current life and the future they have ahead of them. Also, this song probably has my favourite instrumentals on the entire album. Finally, we arrive at the closing track: "New York I Love You, But You're Bringing Me Down." This track takes all the uncertainty, opposing views, and indecision present earlier in the album and releases it in a final wave of catharsis. My interpretation is this: one can be optimistic about their future life (represented by New York in the song), but the uncertainty and mess that is life can lead to them being dragged down, making them feel like they're not suitable for a life as glamorous and incredible as New York provides. The way this song builds and explodes too is absolutely incredible as well: it backs up the lyrics perfectly - if someone worries and gets caught up in their future and all the different possibilities their life could take, they could go from slightly pessimistic to being in a full-blown state of chaos. However, at the end, the piano and band comes back with a slightly optimistic melody, reminding us that things always have their way of working out in the end. And maybe the real New York was the friends we made along the way. Fav: All My Friends, NYILYBYBMD, Someone Great, Get Innocuous! Dislikes: none :P

All my friends + someone great ❤️

I do love me some Sound of Silver. Amazing album that features some of Murphy's best lyricism (IMO) and a number of my favorite individual LCD Soundsystem tracks: North American Scum, Someone Great, Watch the Tapes, and New York I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down. The album opens with Get Innocuous, which builds steadily out of the gate on top of a shuffling "80s" sounding synth that propels forward supported vocally by long-time collaborator Nancy Whang (recommend if you enjoy LCD Soundsystem to give her other side project The Juan MacLean a listen). Time to Get Away ascends from the basement vibes of Get Innocuous flips into a dancy/funky number featuring some stanky synth lines. North American Scum is an uber-catchy synth-rock jam that plays to the same template as Daft Punk is Playing at My House and is filled with a self-deprecating humor throughout (New York's the greatest if you get someone to pay the rent). Someone Great is a highlight of the album. A slow somber reflection on the death of a loved one. I never knew it was about the death his therapist, but the lyrics make much more sense grounded in that context. Such a beautiful song of loss that, while somber in the tone of the synths, plays as a bright reflection with the twinkling bells. Always felt like All My Friends sounds something like the sun rising after Someone Great. I've always found Watch the Tapes to be one of the catchiest songs on here. Such a fun little track with a stupid, but catchy chorus. New York, I Love You is out of character with the rest of the album, but makes for a fantastic closer. A simple piano ballad where he reflects on his love/hate relationship with the city of New York. Love the swelling climax and coda to close out. I've spent a lot of time with this album and it only gets better with repeated listens. Easy 5.

I have learned after our two LCD Soundsystem albums that I really f'in like LCD Soundsystem. Just the quirkiness and awesome sounds instrumentals and electronics scratch every single itch of what I love with music. Was way too involved in work and just vibing out so hard with the music that I was not paying attention to any of the song titles to call any out that I like in particular, but I will be relistening to this album again maybe later today. Being a brand new album to me, this was a 5 from the very jump and it never looked back.

Every song on this is damn good and easy to dance to. Probably LCD's magnum opus and just has all killer no filler. Easy 5 in my book. Wrote more but it got deleted. Either way I'm going to listen to This is Happening now

Another album where I went "Yessss" when it popped up. "Someone Great" is one of the danciest depressing songs out there, and "New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down" and "All My Friends" are amazing as well. Also found I enjoyed "Get Innocuous!" and "Watch The Tapes"

Albums like this are why I enjoy doing the list. First time hearing it. Absolutely loved it. The ingredients review at the top is a perfect summary. I need not add to it. Instead I've poured a crispy cold Stella Artois, it's 103°F here in Western Australia. I'll enjoy my beer and burn my English Pommy skin as I sit out in the yard and let this album wash over me again, whilst also forgetting about The Ashes 🏏

I'm a big fan of the point where indie/alternative meets dance music - even Radiohead fans want to dance, right? New wave in the 70s, the baggie/Madchester scene in the late 80s, and whatever the scene in the mid 2000s was called (the NME tried to coin the phrase "New Rave", but I don't think it ever caught on, or included LCD Soundsystem). Of those mid 2000s bands, LCD Soundsystem was the most consistent, and has aged best. To my ears this still sounds great today, and it's my favorite of their 3 albums (although I love them all).

This is a great record. It produced a couple of hits but I think there's more to it than that... the band had a really great sound for this record, and the songwriting was on point. I'm a fan.

BOMB. was excited to listen to this bc i know shreeya listens to lcd soundsystem and this did not disappoint. i love the mix between rock and electronic music. feel like this is exactly what ive been looking for (although admittedly feel this way about lots of albums on this list). so cool and surprisingly diverse?? favs may be the first two tracks, i like the theatrical quality to the opening track and the second one is just so fun.

First time listening to this group. Enjoyed it!

It's electronic, it's a bit rough and ready, it's got some attitude. Everything I could ask for, really.

Все хиты. Единственный альбом, из которого я скидывал песни своей психологу. Лучшая песня - Someone Great.

I love this album, and it will always hold a special place in my heart. It was one of the first albums I discovered via the internet, so it's probably safe to say it had a big influence on the person I am today. It's fun, it's charming, and at times, it's even touching. I dare anyone who's ever suffered the loss of a younger family member not to be affected while listening to Someone Great. Sound of Silver is a great album to passively chill to, but even more rewarding to really engage with as well. LCD Soundsystem are masters of slowly building tension before gradually deflating it, all while making you want to get up and move at the same time. It's been around 15 years since I first fell in love with this album, and I've only come to appreciate it more as I approach the age James Murphy was when he wrote these songs, and his experiences become more relatable. All My Friends in particular hits me harder than ever now, for reasons I imagine most 30+ people should be able to empathize with. Their aforementioned skill at creating those moments of build-up and release is most evident there, with that final repeated refrain managing to send chills down my spine every time. I really lament the fact that I never got to attend one of their shows before I became effectively priced out of them by the insane ticket prices they're able to demand. All these songs would be incredible to experience as a crowd. Maybe someday, I guess. Favourite tracks: All My Friends, Someone Great, Get Innocuous!

Saw them in NYC, favorite song from this album: Someone great!

There are two, maybe three thoughts in my head. I have heard This is Happening in full, Daft Punk Is Playing in My House(Fifa 06 throwback) and Time To Get Away, but even after loving the third band's album I never seeked to hear more about them, a mistake, this album is very good. My second thought is why is the reunion album (American Dream) in the list instead of the debut or This Is Happening? Third one, I love when the guitars stay on one chord just jamming it in one place and everything else moves around that hanging chord.

easily sound of gold if you ask me

Brill album, they were great live!

I mean I love the first 3 albums, but I guess if I had to pick one to be on here, sure it can be Sound of Silver.

All my friends is incredible

The variety and versatility of each track is incredible so dancy and deep at points

A gift from Gen X to millennials. We love you.

Excellent album. Love how experimental they are.

It’s an aging man’s dream fully realized, and you can dance to it…

If you don't love this album are you even a millennial? These songs are encoded the DNA of everyone who went to college between 2007 and 2015 probably. Perfection.

Una alegria que me recuerden su existencia

Ahhhhhhaaaaa

Very good, creative and a lot of fun. Smart, cerebral and hip all at the same time. Superb.

94/1089 really enjoyed this album, just some cool fun electronica rock, very electronic britpop vibes. I do feel that it loses it’s steam after Us V Them which is what prevents it from being a 5 star album for me. New York… is a really interesting/odd way to end this album, on the one hand i think it’s a cool twist and change of sound, and standalone it’s decent but i also think the whiplash in style is a bit too much. correction: as i was writing this and relistening to New York… it actually clicked and now 5 stars seems like the only correct rating faves: All My Friends, Get Innocuous!, Us V Them least fave: Watch the Tapes 84/100

A belter of an album. 🔥

Millennial sleeper cell activation

LCD SOUNDSYSTEM IS EVERYTHING I LOVE ABOUT MUSIC

Great album, first time listening to it and loved it.

WHERE ARE YOUR FRIENDS TONIIIIIIIIIIIGHT

10/10 - been a favourite for years

This is one of my favourites.

Amazing. Great beats. Dancing by myself. Never heard it before. 5/5

This album came out when I was 16 and was basically the soundtrack to every awful Skins-aping parting I went to at the time. An incredible album and LCD Soundsystem at their peak. All My Friends is up there with the all time greatest songs, and is certainly the song of my generation for that time. The rest of the album is no slouch either; LCD albums all feel like they have just one or two too many filler tracks, but this one has no fat on it at all - from front to back it goes hard and doesn’t stop until the final track where you finally get a chance to catch your breath.

Ебать я люблю Токин Хэдс.

Love this album.

This album defined my early adulthood. I will never forget seeing them at Hyde Park in 2007 during the heyday of indie sleaze. Not a goddamn smartphone in sight. 7/5

One of the best

LCD Soundsystem nail that hipster shrug I want in NYC rock and yet somehow sneak in actual warmth among the beats and drugs and this is them at their peak. Each song on this album evokes a scene I'm sure I'm not cool enough to be invited to, but I am there. "All My Friends" is the sweetest minimalist song ever.

What a first-three-album run LCD Soundsystem had. I'm more of a This Is Happening guy... but Sound of Silver delivers, and there's a lot to love in the tracklist. Someone Great and All My Friends in particular, but there isn't a dullard in the box.

I was (still am) the target demo for LCD Soundsystem. When the whole DFA oeuvre crashed into my awareness, I was finally able to connect the dots between the parts of me that tore up the pits at punk shows and the parts that danced all night at shady parties. James Murphy made it all make sense, and when Sound of Silver dropped, there he was with the Sad Dad energy that had also become a major part of my life by 2006. I can't argue that this is, like, a masterpiece. But it's five stars from me.

Is this my favorite LCD Soundsystem album? Trick question. They're all my favorite LCD Soundsystem albums. I think I just love Jame's music making process...find a neat sound, loop it 1000 times, make a song out of it. It just works. Over and over again. Saw them on their last tour this summer. They're true talent is how great of a live band they are.

The album always surprises me. When released, behind a glowing pitchfork review I immediately bought, and then immediately dismissed. It just didn't resonate with me at the time as a 25/26 year old. However, now I feel the album is brilliant...and I don't understand how I didn't love it from first listen. 5/5

someone great неплохая, all my friends тоже, но боже как же альбом тяжело слушать порой.

Really enjoyed it, the wholoe album being prominent in an stacatto style brings it energy and power

When I was younger and more outgoing, a local bar called Rocky's had a dancefloor upstairs where all the hipsters would hang out on Saturday nights. Small, always with too many people stuffed in and no AC in the summer, the place was suffocating and claustrophobic. At 2 AM closing time, without fail, the looping piano of "All My Friends" began, and everyone jumped along, inevitably without any actual rhythm or synchronization due to the mess of drunkeness permeating the place. For its nearly 8 minutes, everyone shouted along with the song, "WHERE ARE YOUR FRIENDS TONIIIGHT", screaming into the faces of both friends and strangers, the floor throbbing up and down. The lights slowly went up, revealing people standing on the bar, arms on shoulders. A mess of sweat and stink crescendoed and then faded into the night, LCD Soundsystem our candle leading us to bed. So I have good memories of this album, it's one of my favorites of all time. The sound is ultimately very derivative-- ripping off 1980s dance and electronica and new wave, musicians like New Order and Talking Heads and David Bowie. But it's more of a synthesis of these styles into something greater, and it stands as a pinnacle in the genre. It's both synthetic in its electronica and organic in its live instrumentation and raw vocals. A genre I see this under is "dance-punk" and I guess it captures the sentiment pretty well. I don't know if this is a perfect album. Many of the tracks are similar, the album is a bit long, and sitting through it starts to drag on-- perhaps I should have stood up and moved with it. James Murphy's voice isn't always my favorite, but it's raw and honest. I do feel this album will stand the test of time and be a classic for decades. For its impact and pure enjoyment of listening, it's a 5 in my book.

love LCD Soundsystem!! i've heard this album tons of times already, but never really bothered to rate in the past Get Innocuous! - 5/5 Time to Get Away - 4/5 North American Scum - 5/5 Someone Great - 5/5 All My Friends - 3/5 Us v Them - 4/5 Watch the Tapes - 4/5 Sound of Silver - 5/5 New York, I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down - 5/5 Average score: 4.4/5 (rounding up) whenever Get Innocuous! comes on, it's time to shake some ass. i don't make the rules i'll have to relisten to their other albums to be certain, but i might just consider this their best work. hard to say for sure tho, i love all their albums nearly equally. this one is just so danceable and catchy (with the exception of New York I Love You, but that one's an amazing way to close an amazing listening experience). highly recommend their other releases if you enjoyed this. realistically, this gets 4.5 stars but I'm willing to bump the score up a bit here

This is LCD's best. "All My Friends" is their best song, and this is pretty great from start to finish. ("New York..." is kind of ehh, but I appreciate the sentiment if not the execution.)

Wonderfully weird and heartfelt

Fun, catchy album. I was really busy the last couple of weeks and could only listen to it in the background and noticed it was seriously growing on me and got better with every listen. Lots of different styles on the album - I hear Brian Eno in Get Innocuous and Someone Great, Prince in Time to Get Away, the White Stripes in North American Scum, and the Killers in All My Friends (loved the lyrics in this track - makes you really feel how life changes too fast). Normally I'd call being all over the place a negative, but each track is excellent, so I'm ok with it. Bottom line - I was still enjoying it after putting it on repeat for nearly two weeks. When I finally got to a close listen it was even better. Sounds like a 5. I'm normally not into dance/electronica, but this is in a class by itself. Favorite tracks: liked all of them (weakest track was Sound of Silver - good groove but a little too repetitive). I'll put Time to Get Away, North American Scum, and All My Friends as my favorites.

I've always said that the thing about LCD Soundsystem is that it's not necessarily greater than the sum of its parts, but those parts are all great. James Murphy was the kind of guy who got a later start to his music career. He was off on the sidelines, featured deep in the linear notes of other people's albums and a figure within the New York music scene for many years. I still remember a lot of excitement from his debut single, "Losing My Edge", a song about getting older and not being hip any more. It's an ironic place to have launched a career as one of the darlings of early 2000s New York. For someone who's no longer cool, he sure seemed cooler than most other new bands. The song itself was a giant playlist of other artists, a tribute to a forgotten past, but also a reminder than this guy knows his stuff. The following album brought more of his many influences (and one big name drop for Daft Punk), and proved that Murphy's edge was very much intact. The second album is always a challenge for artists though. There's immense pressure to prove that the debut wasn't just a fluke. Fortunately, Murphy knew plenty about music from his years in the studios with others. "Sound of Silver" brought more of the same as the debut, blending bits of punk, krautrock, glam and other influences, but with more precision and maturity. Murphy takes bits of Can, Television, and Bowie, among others to make them his own. It sounds more like collage than passing the torch, although Bowie was impressed enough that he asked Murphy to produce his final album (which he declined, saying that he felt too overwhelmed by it). But this is the point where James Murphy really sets his own mark, with two songs in particular. The nostalgia-filled ode to keeping friends in adulthood, "All My Friends" resonates in a way that's rare to hear in popular music. And anyone who's ever lived in New York can relate to the bittersweet "New York I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down." The rest of the album is introspective, depressive, sarcastic, and yet very fun to listen to. But those two songs really elevate the rest of the album to something special.

Get Innocuous! Feel like I am an in an underground discotheque rave. Love any sound bites with cheerleader-like expressions. 'You can normalise!' yes! thank you ladies! Yes I can! A useful daily affirmation to quash any autism present in my body. Odd though that the outcome then is to 'get innocuous'. Wait is this an anti-autism anthem. Time to get away: Ok. A certified banger. But nothing compared to the 4-track dream run that proceeds it. I like the good old 'omg it is so hard to be a musician' sentiment, but nothing groundbreaking. North American scum: YES. Amazing beat that only gets better with the bass (as most songs do lol) and makes me bop my head like a fucking pigeon. If writing these reviews to impress a boy was not pick me enough, I could add fuel to the fire by going to a house party, playing this song and dancing on the dining room table like Kat Stratford. Also reminds me a lot of 'Daft Punk is Playing in my House'... one of my favourite LCD songs. Someone great: It's a Talking Heads revival and I am loving it. All My Friends: My favourite song on the album, though arguably this love is fuelled by nostalgia. You know what that means! Get ready for more diabolically cringe pick me behaviour. Between Baba O'Reilly, Bittersweet Symphony, and this, getting from A to B in the first year of getting my red Ps was fun as fuck and made me feel really cool. Us vs. them: Here you have a distillation of all things LCD Soundsystem. The layering of sounds is insane and makes me want to boogie. The cow bell-like instrumentals make me want to shake what my mother gave me (nothing). Rattle them bones sister! Watch The Tapes: bass bass bass bass, nothing else to note. Sound of Silver: Title track kind of gets lost amongst the greats in way. Far more instrumental which I quite like. I was on the fence about whether I wanted to purchase this album on vinyl, but this swayed me. Would be lovely to have on in the background while I puzzle. What is even better is you are then met with a complete energy change as subito the album moves to 'New York I Love You'. Overall, 5/5. This shit rocks. Highlight: North American Scum, All My Friends, Us vs. Them

I don't know why I'm surprised the folks who made "Dance Yrself Clean" made an album of this quality but this blew me away. Tough to pick songs for my 1001 highlights playlist when every song is this good.

Great. I listened to this way back in the day and it was great to revisit. I loved the loops, the bitter sweetness and the nostalgia.

All time Fav

Two negatives make a positive? I'm not a fan of neither post-punk nor disco, but turns out the post-punk disco is definitely a thing! Really interesting combination of groove, hypnotic rhythms and weird (in a good way) sound design Feels like the work of a great musician playing to their strength, effortless and good. Overall I enjoyed most tracks here, both the catchy and the quirky ones.

Love it! Gonna listen again for sure.

Myliuuuu labai geras albumas

If you weren't drinking cheap beer and trying to out-hipster everyone else in Seattle in 2007, were you really living? 🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙

The "North American scum-someone Great-all my friends" run of songs is unbelievable

As soon as Sound Of Silver appeared this morning I knew it was going to be a five star straight away, but I listened to it 4 times before lunchtime anyway just to be sure. This album gives me the energy of a 17 year old. My first 5-star rating, masterpiece.

I LOVE LCD SOUNDSYSTEM!!!!!!! This is one of my all-time favorite albums. It is just sooooo good. If you aren't having fun and dancing while listening to this album maybe you just hate fun. So many of these songs are just have such a great groove, and then there are the songs Someone Great, New York I Love You, and All My Friends which are this weird blend of melancholy, nostalgia, and positivity. I know it's not on this album, but I want to do something a little different for this review. In the song Losing My Edge off of their debut James Murphy lists a lot of bands that he was inspired by, and I thought it would be fun to figure out which ones were (+) and were not (-) included in the 1001 albums. Can + Suicide + Captain BeefHeart + Daft Punk + Larry Levan - Beach Boys + Modern Lovers + Niagra - Yaz - This Heat - Pere Ubu + Outsiders - Nation of Ulysses - Mars - The Trojans - The Black Dice - Todd Terry - The Germs + Section 25 - Althea and Donna - Sexual Harassment - A-ha + Dorothy Ashby - PIL + Fania All-Stars - Bar-Kays - The Human League + The Normal - Lou Reed + Scott Walker + Monks + Joy Division + Lower 48 - The Association - Sun Ra - Scientists - Royal Trux - 10cc + Eric B and Rakim - index - Basic Channel - Soulsonic Force - Juan Atkins - David Axelrod - Electric Prunes + Gil Scott Heron + The Slits + Faust + Mantronix - Pharaoh Sanders and the Fire Engines - The Swans - The Soft Cell + The Sonics + Anyways, I love this album! High 5!!!!!!!!!!

James Murphy has made some amazing albums, but this might be his masterpiece.

I have no idea why this band works so well for me. It's incredibly repetitive, and not a style of music I actually like, but for some reason I just can't get enough.

Love this group and love this album

This is the first album on the project that I didn’t listen to. Not because I don’t like it, but because I’ve played this album from the beginning to end so many times (including recently) that there is no need. James Murphy’s brilliance and uniqueness is infuriating because nothing else before or since has sounded like peak LCD Soundsystem … and I want more!

5/5 for all my friends alone

Really good, catchy on the first listen. Something I will be listening for a long time.

Amazingg!

super groovy. get innocuous, time to get away, north american scum!! us and them. really really good. read all the pamphlets! sound of silver lol. New york rocks. purchased on finishing.

Okay I realize I listen to these while I work, so music like this will always get high reviews from me cause it keeps me jamming. Anyway, loved it, New York is amazing

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

An album I've loved since 2007

"Time To Get Away" is a bad ass song... if you can get past the opener... a seven minute, meh fest... "Get Innocuous"... the album starts sounding like the LCD i know... "North American Scum" is a raucous, party workout... as the album goes along... "All My Friends" is another seven minute song, that sounds like a more alternative anthem type song, ala The Killers... the instrumentation is always fresh with these guys... you don't quite know what's real, what's loops, or whatever... but, sometimes, not all the time, they get into, what i think is their signature sound... like "Daft Punk Is Playing In My House", which is not on this record... but, "Time To Get Away" is in that vein... as is "North American"... "Us V Them" is also in that groove... it's like if Kraftwerk had a love child with CAKE... "Watch The Tapes" is also what i expect from these guys... the album ends with the downtempo song... "New York, I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down"... which picks up and becomes an epic ending to the album... then slows down and the curtain comes down... is it an album you must hear before you die? yes... Five Stars...

Solid all the way through. A very good look at the early 2000’s electronic sound evolving.

Splendid

First time listener and I’m sold!

This might be my favorite album of theirs. It was a really good exercise to listen these songs within context of the album and realize how cohesive the whole thing is. Having lived in NYC for 14 years, the last track will always gut me. That piano at the end….

soundtrack of my summer i adore this album

Wow, what an iconic album. 5 stars from my heart and soul. I cried when I saw them live in 2016.

A classic which has a lot of terrible imitations 4.5*

Modern day alternative classic

5 stars purely for the duo of Someone Great and All My Friends, but North American Scum and New York I Love You have probably been some of my most played songs since this album came out.

I have heard this before and did not remember liking it as much as I do now! Maybe it grew on me, but either way, it feels ahead of its time in some respects. ETA: the more I listen to this, the more I love it. Bumping this up to 5/5

Fantastic album, I listen to this regularly. It has a vibe that is hard to find elsewhere. Danceable, catchy, and fun while keeping it cool

5/5 no notes

I am fond of a few LCD Soundsystem songs, but generally capitalised on the ones more based on melody than the disco/indie/dance sound that they are well known for. As a result, I've never really bothered to listen through a whole album. School boy error! I knew I'd like this from the first song that I'd like this album. And the opener 'Get Innocuous!' was like a demo version of the album. It had the drum machine type beats, the understated disco guitar, quirky vocals and grimey bass. In fact, the grimey/garage bass that ends up on the album throughout was a highlight. I haven't done HUGE research into this group, but I can imagine a guy in his bedroom with drum machines, keyboards and a bass really having a great time coming up with there. Boy! I should have been doing that in 2007. 'All My Friends' and 'New York, I Love You but You're Bringing me Down' are epic indie tunes, and I am a huge fan of the latter. But, the rest of the album was a real pleasure to listen to. My highlight would be 'Someone Great', a dance tune that captured the indie song sensibilities in the lyrics/vocal performance. I enjoyed the dance elements as well. 5 Stars Album 4 (done over the days of 2 and 3) 23/7/2025

Packed full of hits - a definitive electro indie album. More cow bell!

A superb album from the coolest band.

The amount of patience displayed on this record is staggering. Their willingness to let every idea ride out for as long as it can doesn’t dampen the urgency of the LP. For how long and awkward these songs are, they are oddly poppy and accessible. It would be easy for seven minute long, repetitive synth based tracks to alienate a broad listenership, but James Murphy and co seem to have no trouble in making this an album for everyone. Perhaps the most surprising thing about Sound of Silver is how different this LP is from their debut. All the rock elements are gone and are replaced with a much better and more refined set of dance sensibilities (with the exception of the closing song). LCD Soundsystem seem to realise their remit on Sound Of Silver. They take this new, improved sound and manage to fill almost an hour with no duds. Their unique blend of indie infused dance scratches an itch that music fans cannot find elsewhere. ‘Get Innocuous!’ is confident and brave opening track, it doesn’t show its hand immediately but slowly beckons the listener in before rewarding them with a belter of a dance track. We have to wait two minutes and ten seconds to get vocals on this record - which is a statement of intent on an indie album. When the vocals do hit, they are so weird, so bold, so perfect. It’s intoxicating. LCD Soundsystem do have clear influences directing their writing, but it’s their specific blend of these ideas which is inspired. James Murphy is a highly talented and versatile lyricist. ‘North American Scum’ shows off his talent for humorous observation - “And for those who think we are from England. We’re not. No.” Just one track later he is bringing us to tears with ‘Someone Great’, a track which always floors me with its brutally honest sentimentality and kindheartedness. “I wake up and the phone is ringing, surprised as its early. And that should be a perfect warning that something’s a problem. To tell the truth I saw it coming, the way you were breathing. But nothing can prepare you for it: the voice on the other end.” Wow. Perhaps his most well observed moment sits on the title track. “Sound of silver talk to me. Makes you want to feel like a teenager. Until you remember the feelings of a real life emotional teenager. Then you think again.” A line good enough to be repeated a thousand times. The repeating piano line on ‘All My Friends’ is superb and manages to pump through the entire song without getting tired. Also, the trademark DFA records cow bells* throughout this album are so much fun (*see The Rapture’s Echoes). ‘New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down’ is a great closer and acts as a reward for any listener for whom a dance album isn’t their usual bag. You could see this track fitting snugly amongst older songs like ‘Movement’ and ‘Tribulations’. I think it takes a bit of time for some albums to settle into their “classic” status. People never want to believe that 10/10 albums are currently being released. Eleven years on from its creation it is clear now more than ever that this is an almost perfect album.

i love this album. Groovy, fun, chaotic. The closer is one of my all time favourites. Fav tracks - All

Simply one of the best albums ever

5 all day, every day.

This is in my honorable mention list on StoryWorth about my Top Ten albums of all time. Was surprised to see the vast majority of the music came from James Murphy, given he has a huge band in concert. All great tracks, although I have to be in the mood for New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down. Favorites are Us v. Them, Get Innocuous!, and the title track. North American Scum is the title sequence music on an Apple+ show we like, The Buccaneers, done by another artist. If you like the album, check out the 6 track EP, A Bunch of Stuff — cool remixes of songs from SOS. Obvy, a 5 for me.

Certified Banger 5/5

This is a personal one for me. When I first started the 1001 list I got a Miles Davis album as my first one. I expected that for some music history. The second album I got was this one. I had never listened to LCD Soundsystem before, but I absolutely fell in love with this album. The driving beat has me entranced throughout. The first song had me worried about the vocals but then they immediately change for the next. This whole album is a masterclass in pushing a song right to the limit of being too repetitive, but changing it right before it gets annoying. The three song combo of "North American Scum", "Someone Great", and "All My Friends" is one of my favorite music experiences of all time. "North American Scum" is a funny group song. It up beat and light hearted. "Someone Great" does the best job I've ever seen of properly describing grief. When you lose someone it feels like you're whole is crashing down, but everyone else is just going about their day. Don't they know that nothing will ever be the same again? "All My Friends" brings the mood back up. It's a song about growing up and seeing less of your friends over time, but it's still the best thing when you do. I love this album, and it's definitely my most listened to one I've discovered on this list. This album is the reason that we have this 1001 album music group.
