Reviews (page 3 of 13)
This is it! This is why I started the journey through these 1001 albums. To find gems like this. For some reason this absolute masterpiece has been under my radar up until now. Amazing, original, thrilling listen.
Album is smoke, from to to bottom.
So great. Love the energy but also the questions of meaning and existence.
This is one of my favourite albums of all all time so I chuckled as it came up as my first of this project. Maybe it’s meant to be. Fave songs: someone great, NYILY, get innocuous. Honorable mention to all my friends as it was the first LCD soundsystem I heard & fell in love with a few summers ago. Just brilliant
I feel like I checked out this album from the public library on CD around the time it came out. The back half of the album got a little more Hives than I wanted. The bass player should be paid double what they are making now. Great stuff, fun, was happy to hear the 1975 connection on All My Friends.
dang hitting all the high notes lately. Perfect indie electronic/rock album.
I had no idea how good this is, and now I feel stupid.
Tremendous. I dare you to keep from moving to the amazing beats on this record.
Loved it 10/10
Howdy James Murphy just wanted to say thanks for bringing these bouncy, crunchy ear worms to the party. I listened to this album a couple of times over now since popping up. Currently making a playlist centered around it, for butt shaking. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6gS489vz9ZXdfTBhHh4ePq?si=4f6ce47cdb434c33
I'm always sad that I was never hip enough to LCD at their peak. I would have played daft punk at my house, at my house, with friends...LCD is the ultimate house party music. It sounds like being 23 to me, and I love it.
So good. I love individual songs, but I haven't taken the time to really listen to this whole album on repeat. Head bobbing track after track. Feels very New York in my 20s.
Amazing album
All criticisms are valid. Nonetheless when he gets it right, examples on this album being "Someone Great" and "All My Friends", I find it hypnotic and cathartic. Full body exorcism of emotional turmoil.
This is an amazing album, there is no way I could say enough about it. I remember the first time hearing this shortly after it was released, easily on of my all-time favorite albums.
Sound of 2007
Excellent
okay i see u there ;p WAAIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIIIIIITTTT THIS ALBUM IS INSANE new york i love you had me BAWLING same with sound of silver that ATE EASY 5 STARs (my first 5 star ever and 100% deserved) Not often i listen to an album fresh and fall in love... usually takes a couple times damn
dance punk is always my thing
I don't like electronic music that much, but these guys always struck a chord with me. A lot of long songs on this album, not a good sign. This feels like the spiritual successor to Blondie in some ways. Get Innocuous! is a good start although I hate titles with punctuation in them. I have always liked the lyrics, there's a combination or earnestness and silliness that's appealing. North American Scum is a perfect example. Someone Great is their best song, not just on this album, but in their repertoire. It's crazy to think they made a great dance song about losing someone. The driving piano on All My Friends should be annoying but it works perfectly. I really like this album. Title track is the first real miss. The lyrics remind me of the Tiny Rick episode of Rick and Morty. New York I Love You is a bit of a downer and a major tonal shift. I'm not sure how I feel about it.
Not heard this in nearly two decades and it's still an absolute blast. All MY Friends is one of the tunes of the 00s.
To me, Murphy's LCD is a beautiful collage of influences expanding on a meandering feeling of meaningless and nihilisim found prevalent the indie sleaze era. Especially noticable was this tendency in the Gen Xers navigating this movement such as James Murphy. Armed with the wisdom of being old enough to have accumulated a thousand influences, scars from lost battles, and the understanding this will likely not end all that well, he had one life lesson that he knew for certain: sometimes you have to turn it up, pop the champagne, and say fuck it. NOTES: Especially well written is this album's encapsulation of the abstract feeling of losing someone we love in "Someone Great". There are some tendencies I could do without in the Murphy cannon such as the over the top melodrama of "New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down", a song with more potential endings than words in the title, but honestly that's what makes him who he is. He's an indulgent hot mess who, like his track record shows, tries to quit but just can't bring himself to commit to an exit. I hope he's made peace with being the last one to leave the party because he's accidentally become the life of a lot of them.
I think I’m in love. I wish there were more than 5 stars to give. Genuine perfection.
Love this album. James Murphy and LCD aren't for everyone but those who dig it it is an awesome record. Great listen for cleaning the house, getting ready for a night out, just wanting to dance around the kitchen like an idiot.
I WOULDN'T TRADE ONE STUPID DECISION FOR ANOTHER FIVE YEARS OF LIFE!
Ton of fun songs, sound of silver has been stuck in my head for days.
My millennial heart can't not give this a 5
Whoa this takes me back to university days. Strong nostalgia trip. Love this album
Someone great is one of the most powerful songs ever made they should send it to space
Im incredibly biased on this review. I’m a huge LCD Soundsystem fan. This is probably my second favorite of their albums. But to be fair I’ll start with all the criticisms I could see. The first and biggest is that the music tends to be fairly long and repetitive but that’s just sort of the nature of dance music in general, and make no mistake, this is a band that (as far as I know) invented the dance-punk genre. So yes the album as a whole is pretty repetitive, and maybe somebody out there doesn’t like cool synth shit. Idk, I honestly can’t find anything else to complain about this album is fucking awesome. If you like punk music and you are interested in something that’s totally different and entirely honest and true to itself, listen to any LCD Soundsytem album (preferably this one, this is happening, or debut self titled, you can’t go wrong).
You can't help but bob your head throughout most of this entire album. Because they somehow managed to make me enjoy EDM I'm bumping it up a bit. ~ 5 Stars
Nunca oí de esta banda, y mi experiencia de hoy casi me transforma en un autista metronomista, multi instrumental, estuve encerrado en ese mundo, con una sonrisa idiota. No necesito ninguna droga para disfrutar esta música.
Perfect record. I wish I could've lived my twenties when rent was affordable. LCD Soundsystem sounds like the swan song of that
Pure electronic goodness
THE electronic album of the indie sleese era.
Never really listened to these guys. Great album.
This is one of those super catchy, fun, upbeat sounding albums that actually goes way deeper as you listen on and pay attention to whats being put forth, lyrically and musically. For being "dance/punk/electronica/rock/whatever" its certainly not shoehorning itself into any one genre, and it has a lot of fun instruments and sounds and lyrics and does a good job of being pretty varied in its sound (track to track, some of the tracks themselves might put people off who dont want to listen to some repetitiveness for 5 - 9 minutes, but for me it was interesting sounding enough to not care). "Get Innocuous!" is a great opening track that slowly builds and the album doesn't really let up until the last track (until that picks up too!). The catchy synth on "Someone Great" flowing into the frantic piano in "All My Friends" really caught me as a great moment. Standouts were "Someone Great" - the synth is fantastic and the lyrics are heavy - "All My Friends," and "Sound of Silver" - just sounds so unique, I loved the synth throughout. I think I've found a new favorite with Sound of Silver. I could see myself putting this on in the background or to chill to, or to jam along to again and again. My only criticism if I had to have one is that "Us V Them" goes on a little too long. Small nitpick though since its a good jam. I really want to dig into more LCD Soundsystem. This album is freaking amazing and gets a pretty easy 5 stars after my first listen through.
magical works, lcd soundsystem are one of a kind, All My Friends and Someone Great are hypnotizing
I was taken in by the hype for LCD in the mid 2000s, but quickly jumped off. Now firmly a fan. Really liked this album.
This is NOT what I expected. I've never heard anything from LCD Soundsystem before and after few seconds and snippets I didn't feel good about it, I expected something obnoxious and not very enjoyable. And well, it had some very goofy parts but it was super fun AND THEN... And then the final track came. This closer blew me away, like literally this song is so good, it's one of my favorite songs right now, I can't stop listening to it on repeat. It's perfect. And of course the rest of the album is also very great and I will be coming back to it a lot probably. Really really pleasant surprise.
The best of the rest. Forever on my mind ;-) 10 STARS!!!
Amazing “being young in the city music”. Impressive how iconic this still is, no skips, every song so fun and memorable and totemic! I still love this thing so much, it was an emotional listen tbh!
Pretty untouchable. Seems like it could theoretically become kinda corny with age but hasn't yet!
Best non joanna newsom album of the 2000s?
Turns out I really like lcd soundsystem. Really pleasent to listen to. Fresh sounding.
This might be my favorite LCD Soundsystem album. It feels like a perfect transitional album. It still has the silliness and energy of their first album but it’s showing signs of where’s they’ll go on the next one. There’s not a bad track on here. I was going to give it 4 stars because I didn’t think I liked the closer. But honestly, everything works so well on here, I think it’s a 5.
I discovered LCD Soundsystem a few years back, so I was already familiar with most of the songs on this album. Unfortunately, I have probably blocked a few of them from my mind, there's a handful that I just don't care for such as "North American Scum" or "Sound of Silver." But what I do like, I love. "Someone Great" found me at the right time of my life, and along with "All My Friends" and "Get Innocuous" was on repeat constantly throughout the COVID pandemic. This was a tough rating to decide, but I think the great outweighs the less good: 4.5/5 stars.
Transcending listening experience. I can't put into words so will just say 5/5. Please just listen to it. "New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down" is one of the most beautiful, incredible and overall one of the greatest songs ever made.
Awesome album. The synth beats are phenomenal. Best experienced with headphones. Favorite picks: "Someone Great", "All My Friends"
Scum into Someone Great into All My Friends is an incredible track run. I came to this album in my 20s and it spoke to everything I was feeling.
Already one of my favorite albums, though I kinda missed it when it first came out, it doesn't take much to get me to listen to this one again. All My Friends is one of my top, all-time songs..
A new favorite. Dunno how I never listened to the full album before
Cannot exaggerate how big of a deal this was for nerds in 2007
Groovy, funny, danceable, human, somewhat deep sometimes. Maybe the definition of "new classic". The band leaded by James Murphy did a hell of a job on this one by blending sounds of their influences (Talking Heads, B-52s, New Order) on a great record for the ages. Recommended for everyone, to listen anytime.
You’re still the one pool, where I’d happily drown
We all like to complain, but there's too much whining here as for me. Sounds retro even for 2007. Still catchy and perfect for 200-400 running reps.
Loooooove
Somehow having an album with a song titled North American scum on the day that our friends over the pond threaten to withdraw from NATO and form an alliance with Russia seems very apt. James Murphy I am sure is nothing like Trump and he is a certainly a great songwriter. This album builds on the first album and is packed full of top songs. My favourites are Us and Them and the come down song of New York I love you.
When LCD Soundsystem crash-landed with their scrappy, self-titled debut, I wasn’t entirely sold — too much hipster posturing, too much clever-for-clever’s-sake irony. But Sound of Silver changed everything. This was James Murphy dancing through a midlife crisis, turning self-loathing, cultural fatigue, and mortality anxiety into the best 3 a.m. party you’ve ever stumbled into — the kind where strangers feel like friends and every beat feels profound. From the motorik pulse of “Get Innocuous!” to the disillusioned cabaret closer “New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down,” every track builds a groove, layering analog synths, sharp live drums, and Murphy’s wry, confessional bark into something that’s somehow both painfully personal and instantly communal. Where the debut felt like a messy mixtape of ideas, Sound of Silver is sequenced like a night out — starting with swagger and detachment, then slowly peeling back layers until you’re left with nothing but raw emotion and ringing ears. “Someone Great” turns personal grief into shimmering electronic catharsis, its childlike melody and heartbeat pulse amplifying every word’s ache. “All My Friends” transforms aging and regret into a communal anthem, one relentless piano riff carrying the weight of an entire generation’s existential panic. Even the production glows — warmer, richer, Murphy evolving from bedroom tinkerer to master architect of immersive, living soundscapes. The album’s influence rippled far past indie dancefloors, shaping the emotional ambition of dance-punk, indie electronica, and even contemporaries like Hot Chip and Caribou. Sound of Silver is LCD’s masterpiece — a disco ball mirror held up to anyone who’s ever danced their way through heartbreak, held together by the beat and the beautiful lie that the night might never end.
influence by Talking Heads, the Strokes, Kraftwerk, Daft Punk and a lit bit of David Bowie. i didn'like it American dream, but this is am awesome Album. 5 stars
Blast from the past. Not listened to it in full for ages
C’mon man. I listened to this again today for the purpose of writing this and I realize that James’ Murphy’s voice is kinda crumby. I enjoyed this in my formative years. Listening to it made me feel like a cool New Yorker.
Understood why they headlined coachella a few years back. Have never heard of this band prior to the headline announcement, thought the festival sold out and was headlining a new sound system. Great sounding album, had enough variety to keep me engaged, and some parts of it were really catchy without being annoying.
I feel like anyone complaining that this is repetitive is entirely missing the point. Best listened to in a sweaty frenzy at a live venue, another long time favorite that gets an easy five.
already loved this album before this popped up. 10/10.
I'm a fan of LCD Soundsystem. This probably isn't my favourite album, but still good. Something weird about them, I tend to like their stuff less the more I listen to it. Some of this i haven't heard before. So I rated it higher now than I probably will a year from now.
Sound of Silver- LCD Soundsystem ||4.5/5⭐️ ༘˚⋆𐙚。⋆𖦹.✧˚ SUCH A STRONG START WITH THE FIRST TRACK. i like the slow build up to the beat and it’s just so funky and futuristic ig idk i kinda love it. the cheering for the first song is so cute too. idk i love when songs do that cuz then it just like lives in my brain for the rest of the day. however the song loses points for that ear piercing ass star wars laser sound effect. i’m excited for what the rest of the album has in store ^^. i feel like im yapping but holy shit. all my friends so SO GOOD. THE EMOTION WITH THE VOCALS AND THE BUILD UP OF THE MUSIC BEHIND MAKES U RLLY FEEL THE IMPACT. the desperation to keep things the same but ultimately being unable to is just so GOOFOFKFIFOI this song hits HARD. easily my favourite. overall this is an album that once again surprised me, i really liked it! however i do find some songs overstayed their welcome (us vs them did nawt need to be almost 7 minutes) and others i find are *good* but not great yk? _______________________ stand out songs: time to get away, north american scum🥈, someone great, all my friends🥇, watch the tapes🥉,
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4[.7] of 5 stars This entire album is a vibe, and it’s probably gonna be one of my new favourite electronic albums. From the first track, this album really captivated me. The mixture of indie rock and electronic music styles created something almost irresistibly groovy, while also having some incredible guitar hooks and vocal work. The mixing of electronic and analog instruments really intrigued me throughout the whole album. This entire thing sounds like The Strokes mixed with Daft Punk and a bit of new wave mixed in there. I loved the vocal lines, guitar hooks, and feel of “All My Friends,” the cool electronic bits of the first track, and the intensity of the closer. Favourites: Get Innocuous!, All My Friends⭐️, Watch The Tapes, Sound of Silver, “New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down.” Dislikes: Us v. Them
This record brings together many musical elements that I love. Unpolished dance rock with a punk-leaning spine, songs that build despite repetition. Brings me back to my grad school days when I would go to my favorite bar which had a great catalog of LCD Soundsystem on the Touchtunes and my friends and I would load up 5-6 songs for an hour-worth of good feels - the real bang for my college buck. I welcome revisiting this record every time it pops up, haters be damned.
Shut up and play the hits. High 5.
Unreal album. Listened before and loved in the past but sort of forgot about it. Was a pleasure coming back to such a great album. Really riled me up and gave me a lot of energy.
Brilliant
It's good. I didn't want to like it, but I really did. North American Scum reminds me of Homosapien by Pete Shelley. Even if with that ripoff I still liked it. Will need a copy of this for the collection.
New York, I love you But you're bringing me down Like a death of the heart Jesus, where do I start? But you're still the one pool Where I'd happily drown
Wunderbar
Hell yeah
The greatest dance album of all time, nothing to say best song: all my friends, get innocuous worst song: watch the tapes (still peak) surprising how this is happening isnt on here and american dream is
James Murphy is a genius artist, simple as. Solid 5 Stars.
I’m at a 5. My big confession is that I know the name LCD Soundsystem, but I’ve never heard them – I thought I had, but for years, I was confusing them with “009 Sound System”, aka the band (or guy?) with that one song that got overused to death on YouTube in 2009. Granted, I did think I had a sense of what LCD Soundsystem actually was, but, uh… Boy, was I wrong. And, boy, was I glad to be wrong. I was expecting indie rock music, but I was sort of expecting the grungier side of it – it does eventually come into play on the last track for a bit, but for the most part, this is electronica indie rock, and it’s the type of electronica (and the type of rock) that I really fucking vibe with. Straight from “Get Innocuous!”, this album hit the ground running and never really slowed down for me. Granted, there are a few things I can point at – a few songs do settle into a rhythm when they could’ve kept building and expanding, and a few tracks got a little boring because of that. However, that “boredom” more so manifested itself into just falling out of the trance that most of the tracks put me into – James Murphy does a fantastic job of finding a rhythm, sticking to it, and pulling the most out of it that he can. Once he hits a wall, it’s a little easier to “wake up” from the trance, and that’s where the ‘boredom’ comes in, but it’s a boredom that’s still tinged with the anticipation of something new. I’m sure someone will complain that this is 55 minutes, and that the soundscapes all blend together & meld together into one long, boring, plodding album, and if that’s the way your ears heard this, then I dunno, I guess I can’t blame you that much. It is an acquired taste to like this sort of thing, but for my money’s worth, I just can’t understand how this might be the electronica album that bounces off of someone. This isn’t Kraftwerk doing FL Studio loops for 10 minutes on Trans-Europe Express (and no shade to Kraftwerk, that’s just their most boring album to me – their influence on this album & electronica as a whole is felt here), this is blended really well with rock instrumentation that evokes everything from Talking Heads to DEVO to the Beastie Boys & Queen. As someone who went into this 1,001 albums thing turned off by really long tracks (and can still easily be turned off by them), I just think that even with most tracks on this album being over 6 minutes long, they’re all captivating in their own way, even if I bounced off of one or two. Ultimately, I just thought this was great – far beyond what I was expecting it to be, but a very welcome surprise. I need to listen to the debut album whether it’s on the list or not, and that includes the ‘really should’ve been a major hint’ track of “Daft Punk Is Playing at My House,” which I’ve read the title of, but never made the connection for. As far as this album goes, it’s a 5, through and through – a really fast 55 minutes, and a really enjoyable listen.
Amazing. One of my new favorites
Please, please watch this video of Kermit singing the final track https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MSXv_YXLmI&t=0s (I love this album so much) Favourite Tracks: Someone Great, All My Friends, New York I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down Least Fav Track: North American Scum
First full album listened though familiar with many of the tracks; great vibes!
New fave
Before writing this review I must confess I have not heard of anything from LCD Sound System other than Daft Punk is Playing at My House. It's been an absolute pleasure listening this album from start to finish. The album starts with "Get Innocuous!", which has a long but increasingly fast paced, 70s/80s retro feel build up that I enjoyed very much. The theme gets further developed in "Time to get away", with lovely percussion and great baseline. "Someone great" sounds like an instant classic, with good lyrics about grief. "All my friends" again another strong track with fast pace piano base to start. Strong lyrics about aging. "Us v them" brings it back to earlier theme in the album - great build up and very immersive. I found "Sound of silver" musically varied and interesting, and "New York, I love you but you are bringing me down" is a great song to close the album. The slow(er) glam-rock ish finish was like finishing a dream-like odyssey back to the past, but yet it's very 00s indie. For the other tracks in the album, musically "North American scum"/"Watch the the Tapes" are good, but compare to aforementioned tracks they are a little bit forgettable. Overall I really enjoyed the album, and I will definitely listen to more albums by LCD Sound Systems! 4.5/5
I’ve always felt that LCD Soundsystem shouldn’t work. It’s like the joke about Losing My Religion; it’s a five minute song with no chorus and a mandolin as a main instrument, why shouldn’t it be a hit? LCD Soundsystem are a Dance Punk band fronted by a middle aged bloke who looks like somebodies uncle, and who writes exclusively about being middle aged, seeing the kids around you overtaking you and being ennui-ish about it. But fuck me, if it works, it works. I am, loathe to admit, still quite young, but since I discovered it at 17 All My Friends has been one of my favourite songs, and it’s sense of melancholy detachment, dissatisfaction and disappointment with how life turned out has always had a special place in my heart, aged 17, 22, or 26. And the rest of the album is also perfect, danceable and devastating all at the same time. All I ever want to do is be with my friends, whether that be tonight or any other night. When listening to James Murphy and Co, I feel among friends
Man, I love LCD Soundsystem. Wish I had got into them earlier! Such a cool sound and so clearly influenced by Talking Heads.
Easy
Love this band, love this album. It’s such an entertaining listen from front to back, but I will say the final track has always been my least favorite. There’s so much to listen for on this album, so many fun noises, so much slowly-morphing synth. It’s easy to just get lost in this album. 5 stars all day.
What a great record. The synths, the keys, the drum machines. During the height of folk indie rock, I would use this album as kind of palate cleanser. It was the perfect antithesis for the music culture of the time. The irony of it all is that this band (and this album) live on. This is one of those records that takes it as close to the edge as possible, but never over the top. Maybe because of conflicting sounds and elements. Its wild, but calm. Its apathetic, but full of emotion. Its dancy but also somehow anti-dancy. This is a really cool and unique album that should be revisited frequently.
Amazing 4 song Run from North American Scum through Us vs. Them (that bassline!) with All My Friends the highlight - although the rest of the album is also more than strong enough to ease this to a 5...
What wonderful
Great album.
One of the best albums of its time
Love LCD soundsystem, super excited to get into this as a whole. The first track reminded me of Blue Man Group. It's arguably repetitive, but it's refreshing, I can vibe with this. 5* Highlights: someone great, watch the tapes
Dance-punk, electronic rock, electronica, indie rock, dance-rock, art rock
What do you rate an album with two 5-star songs, a couple 4 star songs and the rest 3 star songs? I probably won't play the whole thing through often but I'll be listening to the 5 star songs until death do us part.
Finally something in my wheelhouse! Get Innocuous starts with a pretty long drum machine intro with an acid style bass in the background. Funky! James Murphy’s vocals remind me of David Bowie. Also there’s some female vocals and guitar too. And a violin outro. Next is Time to Get Away. Nice funk drum intro. Got some clavinet and some percussion. Very funky. Reminds me of Talking Heads. Next is North American Scum. One of their hits, and a song I remember digging a lot when I first heard it somewhere. The lyrics are hilarious! Next is Someone Great, which I heard is a tribute to James Murphy’s late therapist. It’s very beautiful. Reminds me of This May Be The Place by Talking Heads. Amazing. Next is All My Friends. Very Krautrocky and has a John Cale esque piano part (fittingly enough he actually covered this song) Also they referenced Pink Floyd’s Set The Controls to the Heart of the Sun! Very good song! Next is Us v Them. I remember hearing this song in Burnout Paradise and digging it. Also I like the part where James Murphy says “Bells” and then agogo bells play. Huge banger. And it has an instrument called the “Fun Machine”. I don’t know what that is, but every song should have it. Next is Watch the Tapes. Nice ramonesy punk intro leading into a dancer new wave / post punk main portion. It’s alright. Also some funny studio chatter at the end Next is Sounds of Silver, with an acapella intro and some Linn drum and synth bass, then going into an ethereal section with choir and piano, then a tribal dubby section with lots of reverb and delay, and some xylophone sounds. Really trippy. Pretty minimal lyrics, but that’s ok cuz it’s mostly focused on the instrumental and the progression of the song, with the repeated refrain being a mantra. I like this experimental stuff. Finally is New York I love You But You’re Bringing Me Down. Another song I have previously heard. Mostly cuz of the music video with Kermit and its use in movie trailers. Very scathing critique of Bloomberg era New York City (which still remain prescient under the current Eric Adams regime. Dude was tried for corruption for Christs sake). Love when it goes all balls too the wall with the distortion at the end a la Rock and Roll Suicide by Bowie. Also it has a fake out at the end like Strawberry Fields Forever or November Rain! Damn good album!!!
This one is just a wild ride from start to finish. Not as good as their self-titled in my opinion, but fantastic in it's own right. The whole middle of this album blew me away. Favorites were North American Scum, Someone Great, All My Friends, and Us V Them.
Many people consider this the best LCD Soundsystem album. They might be right. I’m not one of those people however. It’s funny that the two albums representing the band on the list are not the two I would choose. This Is Happening and the debut are some of my favorite albums of this century so it’s hard to compete. I also can’t help but think that Us V Them somewhat sounds like the Home Depot theme. The layers here deserve to be listened to.
:)
Ah I’m so glad this is here. I wrote in my review of american dream review that I really hope Sound of Silver is on this list. This is LCD Soundsystem’s clear magnum opus to me, even if James Murphy and company haven’t had a bad album yet. All My Friends is one of my all time favorite songs. The title track has a way of getting lodged in my head. NYILYBYBMD is a fantastic closer. Brilliant.
If there is ever an end of the world party, the headliner would be LCD Soundsystem
:D
This is one of my favorite albums ever. I don't know where it falls on the list, but it's up there. This is a group that knows how to execute a build. All My Friends never, and I mean never, fails to give me full body chills as it expands on itself over those 7+ minutes. Lyrics like "You spent the first five years trying to get with the plan / And the next five years trying to be with your friends again" kind of punch me in the gut in a cathartic way. Someone Great is my second favorite song. After that, it might be Us V Them, and one of my favorite moments on the album is that first "Cloud, block out the sun". I do think Watch the Tapes and Sound of Silver are the weakest tracks, but I've listened to this album so many times that they've grown on me. Happy day to get this album.
metti giù quell'arma lina D: --> 5 stelle
HELL YEAH!!!!
Quel pied cette musique. Parfaitemente euphorisante. Un 5 étoiles assez évident, quasiment tout est bon, depuis l'ouverture \"Get Innocuous !\", puis l'enchainement \"It's time to get away\", \"American Scum\", \"Someone Great\", \"All my friends\"... C'est le groupe qui me fait regretter de ne pas être cette personne plus extravertie, qui danse pour oublier et célébrer l'instant. Mais jamais je ne m'en suis senti aussi proche.
Oh my God, perhaps one of the most "a good pair of headphones" albums I ever have heard, LCD Soundsystem's Sound of Silver has been elevated for me beyond on unimaginable limit due to not only its masterclass production, pure danceability and funk, as well as its consistency, but also because it is perhaps the best understanding of what made New York acts like Talking Heads so fantastic. There's variation, there's intrigue, there's layers upon layers upon layers, not unlike Eno's production, to every song so that focusing on just one singular instrument in each track can give you its own groove, its own song entirely. Even when the album slows down for the final track, it is so gripping in its blend of amateur vocals and heartbreaking melancholia that it's hard not to be pulled in. This album just feels like a pure passion project executed to the best of all involved's abilities to deliver one of the most outstanding dance albums of all time; one that can still appeal to those from the past looking for a new dance-y post-punk fix, and those just looking for some 2000s alternative goodness, it is an amazing time no matter how you get here. I just heavily recommend good headphones, you won't regret it when you jump out of your chair to dance.
They should play this in clubs. It would make the whole scene so much more tolerable.
Great dance album. I've heard it several times before this, it's pretty popular. Very groovy with nice beats but it's different from other edm, hard to describe. I'm sure I will be listening to this many more times. I think it's a classic and sonically very interesting.
is nice
Some great rhythms and some techno vibes here and there. The vocals were also pretty good, they didn't bother me as much as vocals on similar albums. All My Friends and Get Innocuous are both bangers.
Own it. Love it.
Perfect album front to back. So hard to pick a favourite song
James Murphy & the rest of his Soundsystem have a deep working knowledge of the slow build. these songs often stretch as long as 7 or 8 minutes, and somehow they seem to flash by. even for as glacially paced as some of these builds are, they maintain this electrifying sense of intrigue at every moment. the mark of having fun is time flying, after all! Talking Heads is maybe the most obvious influence at play here (to me, at least), but the influence of sixties and seventies minimal music can't be ignored either. as much as these songs are all undeniable jams, they also have a tendency to put me in a bit of a trance, especially the title track. both LCD Soundsystem and minimalism have a strong association with New York City, so I don't know if I can call that a coincidence! the mix of electronic and acoustic instruments to create these dance grooves is near-perfect in its execution. this is no doubt a studio project, but it always maintains a live feel. there's little blemishes in the percussion, synths so big they sometimes clip, and often unrestrained lead vocals, but it's all in service to the groove. Murphy's topical focus is also quite strong, mostly centered around the passage of time and its effects on his life and his mind. while these songs often feel like they're suspended in time, Murphy is well aware that time never truly stops, for better or worse. I relate a lot more heavily to the sentiment of "All My Friends" at 27 than I did when I listened to this album for the first time at 19. decent 9/10.
I love this album. It's probably a 9/10. It gets a 5 in this format.
I mean, I’ve listened to this album probably hundreds of times at this point. It’s an all-timer, it’s a classic, it’s 10/10.
Such a good album
Tough between this and This Is Happening on what my favorite of theirs is. Still incredibly strong and a fun listen. Perfect music to work to as well. Rating: 4.8
This album hits all the marks for me. Making loops is very fun, but after so many times you find the loop, no matter how many layers you create, ends up feeling hollow. That's why its more fun playing in a band with other people. Murphy took the benefits of loops, technology, endless instruments etc but didn't let that limit the songs. He still created something with substance and variety. It does sound a bit lonely at times, but it works. Uniquely LCD Soundsystem.
Besides the three absolute bangers on this album, there are some nice deep cuts. I really like New York, I love you. Watch The Tapes was also good. This album is played a lot. It doesn’t sound overly 2007. It pushes a unique futuristic retro theme that is iconic. Doesnt get old whenever I hear it in the wild
Pretty much a perfect album for me. All My Friends is one of my favourite songs of all time, but every other track hits too. Fave Tracks: all of them 5/5
“I have a fever and the cure for that fever is More Cowbell!” Luckily, there is Us vs. Them, which I never thought I would say, but has amazing cowbell! I tripped across LCD years ago and have loved this album since, with my absolutely key track being the aforementioned. The way he builds on rhythm and sound is intoxicating in its repetitiveness. I don’t know if there is a bad track on here. In the context of when this was put out, there was nothing like it. This is definitely a modern classic!
I’m a big can of LCD Soundsystem. This album and their debut self-titled one are classics. 100% good. lCD Soundsystem are playing at my house!
Masterpiece from the north American scum
five stars not because i think it's perfect music, but because it's an album that means a lot to me
listened to the songs many times but never the full album
love it
i love
Guay!
10/10
Bowie with an 808, innovative, bouncy and fun
Sumamente recomendable.
I heard “Someone Great” from this album while shopping at The Gap with my future spouse. That prompted me to download the entire album and I listened to it incessantly through a challenging professional period In my life. This is a five star album for me, personally. You may not agree, and that’s OK, but sometimes the emotion and the quality of music intertwine exquisitely.
I mean, come on.
Honestly, every song on this album is at least good, so I feel like I can give it this, even if it’s not necessarily a favorite.
Hell yes dude, this is what dance punk is all about. But this is more like progressive dance punk, it just transcends genre labels. Fucking love this album.
I really liked this album! I ended up listening to it at least twice (mostly because I had shit to do so I was focused on that) and I like the song that the 1975 copied a lot (it's now on my playlist)
My favourite LCD soundsystem album. The best songs I've heard about grief and losing control of your life.
Reminds me of playing Forza 2 at my old place back in the 00s - despite none of these tracks being in that game. I guess LCD Soundsystem have a sound - and that isn't a problem, because that sound is good.
Listened on repeat Never soured, kept moving feet, So fun, so unique
Fantastic album on the borderline between rock and dance. "North American Scum" and "All My Friends" are great songs and the highlight is "Someone Great". All songs deliver a lot of energy and positivity.
I loved this album.
Love!
Truely feels like the begining of the heavy electronica being an obvious novelty but also actually in service to the music. An incredible feat.
I don't know what I thought LCD Soundsystem was, but I was very wrong. I went in to this album expecting more awful electronica and instead found something closer to Talking Heads meets Radiohead. I'm not sure how I missed this band, but I'm sad I did. I was going to do a track by track break down, but there's no point. It's all great. And the video for "New York I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down" — How did I miss this? How? 5/5
As if, we see them at Glastonbury and then have this album! Well it's obviously a certified K-Town BANGER! SO GOOD. Someone Great is my fave LCD song for sure.
Spectacular album. I hear the strokes, depeche mode, and Talking Heads. I cried during All My Friends. Earth shattering shit right here. Easy 5.
A perfect sophomore release. Dancey and prophetic.
A quintessential dance punk album that just happens to end with one of the most beautiful ballads ever recorded. This grows on me every time I hear it and, while I don’t love the title track, it’s an otherwise pretty stellar record
Revelation
I really like this album. It kind of makes me feel like a hipster from GTA4, but thats fine. 5/5
LCD Soundsystem's Sound of Silver is a groundbreaking album that blends innovative production with infectious energy. From the pulsating beats of Get Innocuous! to the introspective anthem All My Friends, each track captivates with its diverse sonic landscape. James Murphy's meticulous production fuses dance-punk, electronica, and indie rock seamlessly. The title track, Sound of Silver, mixes melancholy with uplifting rhythms, highlighting Murphy's introspective lyrics. Themes of aging, friendship, and introspection weave throughout the album, resonating deeply in tracks like Someone Great and energizing in Us v Them. Sound of Silver is more than music—it's a narrative of life's highs and lows, wrapped in pulsating beats and poignant lyrics. It's a defining work for LCD Soundsystem, showcasing their ability to innovate within electronic music. For fans of electronic and indie rock, this album offers both excitement and introspection, making it essential listening. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 5 STAND OUT TRACK - All My Friends
Favourite song - All my friends
I forgot how much I liked this album. I bought this on CD when it originally came out. It still sounds great today. I know this isn’t exactly club music but it’s close. If all club music was like this I would be a big fan.
Magnefique!
So so so so so so so good
LCD Soundsystem: the band that made no longer hate the electronic/dance music genre and opened me up to a wider music world. This album is another of their awesome collection of songs. I like the beats, the synths, and the thoughtful lyrics. I can enjoy music I can spastically dance to without taking MDMA.
The soundtrack for most of my 20s. A lot of great memories listening to this album. Managed to see them before their farewell tour, during the farewell tour, and after. Yes, I was there. Looking back and trying to be objective through the nostalgia, this album is great but it does have some weak spots. Never been a fan of the track Sound of Silver, and Watch the Tapes is somewhat forgettable. The rest of the album is pure joy. I would often pack my headphones for a night out so I could play New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down on the cab ride home. Someone Great got me through the loss of my grandfathers. And I can’t count how many times I danced (or jumped) to All My Friends. It’s an important album and it’s essential listening.
1. Get Innocuous is an instant 5/5, perfect precussion, progression and the vocals are just the perfect cherry on top. 2. Time To Get Awake getting to daft punk, chemical bros ish vibes and the sega genesis bass is preffy nifty too, so far a 4/5 track. Just started listening after that, very beautiful listen. Vocals, instruments and melodies are all super strong and felt like an electronic experience through a variety of genres. Definitely an album worth delving into. 5/5
Took me back to college dance parties
The soundtrack to my mid 20s. A damn near perfect album. James & co. never did manage to top this one, which hit just the right balance of honouring and celebrating its influences while being unabashedly its own thing.
Thank You "One album a Day" (1001albumgenerator.com). Sometimes word of mouth and the youtube algorythm miss something. I almost alway need a second listen to really get sold on an album. Very rarely, I think I can count on just my fingers, has an album shown up and I just crush the like button on. LCD Soundsystem is literally everything I like in music wrapped in a neat, tight package. I am gobsmacked that I never heard them before, not even a single in fact. But that does not matter, as yesterday, I was introduced by this website... I love love love this stuff!
Staan een paar van m'n favoriete nummers allertijden op, zeker het laatste nummer is ongekend goed. Makkelijke 5
GOAT
Some albums have disproportionate importance to your life. This is one of mine. After 10-15 years of nothing but rock and metal, progressively getting heavier and heavier, with the last few years basically being solely death or black metal, I suddenly flipped in my early 20s and got into electronica. This was the gateway album. I'd heard other stuff before, but this was the album that pretty much every track I was hooked to, and it became the soundtrack of my year (although I've forgotten exactly which one). It actually starts off weaker imo, great opening track but then 2&3 are the only low points in the album (though not *that* low), but after that... Wow. Id love to listen to this album completely fresh now I'm 10+ years down the line of non-metal genres but like so many albums on this list that's impossible. All I can give it is the highest honour
if I become a functional drug addict, this will be my soundtrack.
Awesome. Lots of reviews on here all call out different songs as favourites which shows how consistent this album is. The highlight is All My Friends which is an absolute banger, one of the best songs of the 21st century for sure. They're all good though.. I can't stop myself tapping my foot and nodding my head to the beats. I also think James Murphy is an underrated frontman, his voice and lyrics are great This also gives me great nostalgia for being 20 and putting on LCD Soundsystem at parties and trying to look cool. It still sounds amazing
Fun album. Had me moving a bit. Very danceable album. Fun to listen to as well! Will definitely come back to this. Very good.
Good album. May different styles. Good quality.
This album was the soundtrack to a lot of my college days (and nights). LCD Soundsystem were one of the ultimate "cool person" band's of the 2000s, and with good reason. Great blend of genres, some catchy danceable songs, and a few slower, more contemplative ones. "Someone Great" always makes me think of a friend of mine who suffered far too much and died far too young. "All My Friends" is a complex one for me; it's incredibly anthemic, but it also often brings me close to tears, thinking back on my misspent youth and wondering about old friends that I've since lost touch with. On the brighter side, Get Innocuous is a great song to get you pumped up for a night out, I used to listen to it on the bus on the way into town to meet my friends. This album really has it all.
Love the recipe review and I think there is some Talking Heads and a bit more punk rock I tasted in the stew too. But this actually unique and refreshing for an indie 80s dance sound. I agree it was exhausting at times, especially All My Friends. Lyrically this is much more interesting than you’d expect from an dance record
Can't be mad about getting to spend some of easter monday spinning this modern classic. Not a single bad song, maybe the title track is the weakest but that doesn't say much. The double whammy of 'Someone Great' then 'All My Friends' is a real gut punch, songs like the opener and 'Us vs Them' just make me want to dance, and the closer is beautiful. Some of the post-2000 inclusions so far on this list have been questionable, this one is perfect. Where are your friends tonight?
At some point in our history, Christopher Walken heard this album and rejoiced, for the cowbell he'd always wanted had come. The time has come today. Of all the albums on this list, I'd argue this is the one I've listened to the most. It's in my top 10 of all time, and I'll always rate it 5 stars, but it's certainly not everyone's cup of tea. I get it, I used to hate dancing and happiness too.
This groovin’, movin’ masterpiece from the maestro Murphy never, ever fails to get hands in the air or feet on the floor.
Dies ist keine objektive Bewertung <3
Every song is an absolute tune!
One of my favorites
I originally listened to the wrong LCD Soundsystem. Then listened to this one. What a great day. 4.6
Great grass mowing album.
Yasssss. + DTRH ^^
Listened to it several times—enjoyed the energy
Best album you've generated
Smart. Sarcastic. Great stuff
This is a great album, I loved every song. I had no idea!
This album changed my perspective on electro music. Another favorite artist.
Went in blind and I had no idea what genre to expect. Still don't know what to call this, but it's fun. I didn't feel nostalgia because I've never heard the album, but overall not too bad. Fun sounds and I could feel the angst.
Almost as if Talking Heads came up after the rock revitalization of bands like White Stripes and the Strokes, Sound of Silver is an impressively produced batch of bangers ranging from glossy to glitchy. James Murphy’s lyrics and delivery are unique and fitting for the manic, hazily-up-until-dawn nature of a lot of these songs. His controlled chaos is also fitting for the arrangements built often times on one idea or motif and grooves that never end which lend themselves to having anything gliding over the top of them. These melodies are sticky, as are the basslines. In (but not limited to) those two elements, it’s remarkable how timeless they sound regardless of the influence of music released two or more decades prior being so imprinted in them. Furthermore, how did a song like Someone Great not already exist? It sounds like two things, A.) a song that’s been in collective consciousness for decades and B.) a sentient radio slowly learning to control itself. Perhaps that’s one of the direct and necessary takeaways from this album.. the “sound of silver” is that of tech, machinery, and a human life that’s slowly molting into something much less human. Sound of Silver is, at worst, something I can understand not everybody being into. However, if you’re in, you’re in. This tracklist is entirely sturdy and well-sequenced, almost to the point of having a live show quality. It sounds like a party I had no idea I was going to be invited to. Maybe a little bit like life itself 🤔 “Bells..” 9+/10
Amazingly funky and fun album, 10/10 solely because of "Someone Great"
Love always
Groovy
Already love this album
PEAK MUSIC
This is why I'm here
Simply one of the best
I mean what can I say, dangerous band that lcd sound system
I've trauma bonded with this album
Big fan. Not a completely straight forward 5* like Abbey Road etc. but it’s an album I have on rotation a lot. And despite the opinion of my peers I could listen to All My Friends all day everyday and never get bored. Simpsons reference: No
Songs were too long imo and I don’t really like the electronic-y sound or atleast how it sounds in this album. Think it got better towards the end tho. edited: my music taste has changed since I started this. I enjoy the electronicy sound alot and I thinks its done exceptionally well on this album. really great.
Nostalgic, energetic, good indie pop. Parts sound like MGMT. Really enjoyed it 9/10
A great record that my younger self wouldn’t have liked so much. I’m glad I’m older now and listen to more genres than in 2007.
Was dancing around the house by myself. Unexpectedly fun.
Guay!
I am not North American tho
This was a really really pleasant surprise. Amazing album.
One of my favorites. It's perfect.
Could listen to for a long time
An all time favorite, no notes!
One of the best Electronic albums of all time though i do prefer this is happening
Cooles Elektro-Pip Album
I don’t know why I had it in my head that I didn’t like LCD Soundsystem. This album is fantastic. How often is dance music heartfelt and even sad? I hear elements of Talking Heads, Kraftwerk, Bowie… Little Richard even. It also reminds me of peers: Spoon, Cake, White Stripes, Ghostland Observatory… It’s rare that I don’t want a 6 minute song to end, but “Someone Great” fits the bill. This is hype music for millennials. This is music to get you to have fun cleaning the house. This is brilliantly crafted pop music.
OMG!! Laziness made me don't listen to previous album suggestions. This LCD album hit me in the heart ❤️
Pretty damn close to a perfect album. Love the song build ups. Every song is a banger with the exception of maybe read all the tapes. 4.63
just saw them last week (Dec 2023 in SFO). they opened the show with the first track off this album. still fresh.
A favourite album of mine. Influential musically with occasional touches of black humour.
Apologies LCD Soundsystem, I was unfamiliar with your game
This wasn't love at first sight, but it soon seduced me with its charm and wit and effective use of tongue-in-cheek electronica.
As the first track started, my first reaction was that I was going to love love love this album. By the end, it fell a bit short of that mark for me, but it was very good!
What a mood booster! Really helped out my antidepressants today.
I must admit that when this popped up I was slightly annoyed… as I get further into this project artists that are new to me who get multiple albums make me assume they are overrepresented. I grudgingly started this album and I’ll be damned if Get Innocuous! didn’t have me up and dancing from the jump - what a fantastic dance track! My preconceptions dissolved in an explosion of audio glitter! I went back to look at my review for the previous LCD Soundsystem offering - American Dream. There I wrote that this was a group I needed to hear more of. Commendations to my previous self for my prescience! The album does not disappoint from there… I found delight in all the crevices! The music is a ton of fun and while it doesn’t seem to take itself too seriously it does have interesting things to say along the way. The songs are all really, really good and did wonders for my temperament. Goodbye ol’ grouch - time to play this again and get back out on that dancefloor!
Good and easy to listen to. Like it.
Oh yeah, this is different. hard to describe. I got it. Tickled. me. And I love the confessional title. Strewth, mate. (new music for me!)
Amazing iconic stellar legendary
Groooovy
Fucking banger.
I downloaded this album - when that was a common thing. I had this on a collection on a ipod mini that I filled with downloads. I love this album. This is an incredible collection of dance tracks - simple, compelling, and fun. James Murphy can produce fun, catchy tunes with a punk-like attitude.
Still one of my absolute favorite albums
Great Really strong second half Scrapes a 5
Such an awesome album. I already knew like half of these songs and they are only getting nore poignant as I get older. Loved this one.
I forgot how great this album is!
This was my first exposure to LCD and it was pretty influential, as I got pretty deep into them for a time. Saw a few shows, looked up all their in-song references, etc. I love the throwback beats mixed with the creative production and slightly cynical self-aware lyrics. They are one of those bands that represent a certain type of music listener who will not only enjoy their music but also go digging for influences, related bands, and other types of discovery.
5/5. A great collection of dance-ish rock/pop songs. Bias, I have heard this one many times, but each listen is so fun and well conceived. Feels young and fun, while still being concise and amazingly produced. A great road trip album but sounds great on loud speakers. Plus the lyrics are personal on some but also so weird on others that it creates a nice barrier between each.
I loved this. First listen caught me dancing at my desk at work. Every song was a great one.
From start to finish absolute bangers
Absolute cracker of an album. You can feel immediately why it’s a classic. It has that staying power, that weight of being highly influenced but more than the sum of its parts. Loved it, loved listening to it in snowy sunny Reykjavík, will continue to return to it wholesale from now on.
The best from the best
Classic
Absolute classic that I pretty much know inside out now. Easy 5*
Good for working
I opened Spotify to play this album and see I already had North American Scum, Someone Great, and All My Friends markes as liked songs. On this listen I got a new appreciation for Get Innocuous! and Sound of Silver.
God how is this album so good
epic
Loved this
Longtime favorite, it's easy to forget how somber some of these songs are on this album mixed in with fun dancey tunes. Fiest half of the album is stacked. Maybe my favorite overall lcd album. Repeats: time to get away, north American scum, someone great, all my friends, New York I love you Skips: sound of silver (ironic)
Rating: 10/10 Incredible dance-punk album. Very catchy instrumentals, danceable and fun rhythms, and some fantastic emotional slower songs. All My Friends is one of the greatest songs of all time. Absolutely love this album and definitely one of the best albums of the 2000s. Worst song: Sound of Silver, still great though.
I did know this album, but I think I wasn't completely ready for it the first time around. This time I was completely captivated
I love this album, my favorite tracks are North American Scum, All My Friends, and new york i love you but you're bringing me down. There's so much yearning tucked into the corners of each song—yearning for love, for belonging, and for permission to feel alive. You're also trapped in the rush of the crushing expectations of capitalism in Watch the Tapes as the bass-line bounces you along to the rhythm of commuter traffic. Life as a cog in the machine!
4.8
Favorite song: Us V Them Least Favorite: Get Innocuous! One word: Tight
Amazing
One of my all time favorite albums before being assigned it here. Still rings true
Yes
Woah!
I had never heard of LCD Soundsystem until the lineup for Austin City Limits in 2010 was announced. People seemed to be really excited for them to be on the lineup, so I decided to check them out. I looked them up on YouTube and found the video for "All My Friends," and I was immediately hooked. I bought this album and This is Happening, and I wound up enjoying This is Happening more. However, over the years, I've grown to consider Sound of Silver the band's best work. Every track is deep and rich in sound, and I feel like I hear some new detail every time I listen to this album. James Murphy's low-key vocals provide a perfect contrast to the fast-paced dance rhythms, and his lyrics are the perfect combination of punk rebellion mixed with Gen X apathy and nihilism. "All My Friends" is one of my all-time favorite songs, and its catchy piano loop still entrances me every time I hear it. To me, this album is absolutely perfect, and remains one of my all-time favorites. Long live Indie Sleaze.
One of my favorites of all-time. Love Someone Great, All My Friends and NY, I Love You.
BL: Sound of Silver is one of my favourite albums of all time already so I doubt listening to an album I’ve listen to maybe 50+ times is really going to shift on the 51st listen AL: my hypothesis was correct FT: “get innocuous”, “someone great”, “all my friends”, “New York, I love you but you’re bringing me down” 5/5
Good
Still a great album
Really like LCD. This and band make me imagine what the talking heads would sound like if still making music together.
LCD have gained a new fan. Excellent album
I was a decade late to the LCD party but I’m a fully paid-up member these days. First and foremost, this is just irresistibly danceable, in a way that a lot of ‘dance’ music isn’t, for me. Even the weaker tracks are infectious. The lyrics are witty, the vocals are goofy, yet somehow it avoids falling into novelty territory. The secret ingredient must be pathos - Someone Great, All My Friends and New York I Love You are colossal anthems with real emotional heft. Fun AND deep. It moves your body, it moves your soul. To paraphrase a famous internet meme, ’get you a band who can do both.’
indie electronica? yes please
This has received heavy rotation of the years. Still just as good. All My Friends.
I came across this album in my college years and have loved it ever since. I feel like I tend to dislike a number of electronic albums I get on this list because they lack much of a personal connection and feel hollow. This album proves you can make great electronic music that still feels human. Standout Tracks: Get Innocuous!, North American Scum, Someone Great, All My Friends, Us v Them, Watch the Tapes, Sound of Silver, New York I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down
What a cool album! This was a solid 3 for me until the last few tracks. "New York, I Love You" is a gem!
I wish the songs were a little longer tbh(The album’s songs on average is literally 5 mins)
Absolutely love this band and this album.
like
This album is imperfect, but it's incredibly fun and the high highs more than make up for its imperfections. All My Friends is one of the best songs ever written - it packs about as much emotional drive and catharsis as you can fit in one song. The rest of the album is mostly great, with infectious grooves making up for the fact that some songs can get a bit repetitive. I just want to turn up the volume and keep listening anyway.
This has my favourite song of all time on so a bit of a chest. Also reminds me of GTA iv
Easy 5 stars, one of my favorite albums of all time!
James Murphy with a leccy guitar, how can I not give it 5 stars
This album is a four-star continuation of the first LCD album, witty, distanced, ironic NY cool right up to track 4 - then it lifts into something completely different. Its still got the NY scene beats but the melodies, the rhythms, the vocals are something else. Ageing, worrying about still being cool, worried about clubbing being shallow....the next six tracks are as touching as dance music gets. Then there's a full-blown sad ballad to finish...worried that living in New York is not the answer any more.
One of my all time personal favorites. LCD Soundsystem is like electric Talking Heads, and that is the best compliment. Got to finally see them perform live last year, and the show exceeded my expectations. It’s great when a band you liked in high school actually holds up into your adulthood
North American S(cum) Score: 90 Art: 70
Has a lot of bangers. I’ve heard some songs off this album before, but some I’ve never heard before. They’re all very good though.
Brilliant front to back.
one of my all time favourite albums.
LCD sound system always represented a bit of a gap in my listening experience. This was the first time I’ve actually listened to this album in its entirety and I’m struggling to think of why I didn’t do so much sooner. I had so much fun with this, it’s simply infectious. The writing, performances and production were all top notch. Slightly astounded at how effectively layered these songs are, so many grooves and rhythms interplaying in a way that feels organic and alive without ever getting too crowded or muddled. A lovely mix of more emotional hitters and fun bops. 4.5 stars Fave track: all my friends
One of my favorite albums by them. Also, going to see them next Friday. WOOHOO. Favorite track - Someone great. 2nd fav - All my friends Finished @ 8:54AM
I really like LCD sound system and all its hipster glory
One of the best records of the 21st century. Simple as that. Although dedicated to James Murphy's late therapist, Sound of Silver is just as much an homage (or a hate letter?) to New York City with Murphy and co. staggering from rock joints to electronic clubs in their sales force suits. With opening tracks like 'Get Innocuous!' and 'North American Scum', you might get the impression that the record will be filled with danceable jabs at the world, picking up where Talking Heads left off at their most playful. But then things get intimately personal. 'Someone Great' is one of the most accurate portrayals of loss and grief in modern music, and it's incredible that Murphy is able convey so many aspects of the grieving process with so few words. An immense highlight of the album which then immediately gets overshadowed by the monumental 'All My Friends'. Jesus, this track is peak music. An entire adult human life told in just about 8 minutes, with quotable line after quotable line. It's danceable, but simultaneously incredibly moving. 'Us V Them' would be a hell of a track even without vocals, and like most of the songs on the album it's just layer upon layer of electronic and analogue instrument recorded in a room covered in tinfoil. Probably something you would notice, but something magical sure happened during these recording sessions. Finally, the bittersweet 'New York, I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down' sends us off with a reminder that life is multi-faceted and filled with conflicts - but everything is a little easier in the company of others. "You spent the first five years trying to get with the plan And the next five years trying to be with your friends again"
I'll be honest and say that I got this album nearly a week ago. I'm only writing my review now, because I just can't decide how to score this. I come into this review very much impartial, as I've listened to it many a time. I can't not mention how repetitive it is. I can't not mention that it derives a lot of its style to its predecessors like the Talking Heads, and doesn't do it quite as well as they did. But I also can't not mention that it's catchy as hell and puts me into a near trance. It makes me, very much not a dancer, want to shake my little tush. Certain tracks even make me tear up a bit. I can't not admit that for all its faults, this is a damn near perfect album to me.
I am often indecisive as to which LCD Soundsystem is my favorite. This Is Happening has a certain polish to it that it makes for such a high quality record with the best production possible and some of LCD Soundsystem's best-written songs. On the other hand, Sound of Silver has the punkish edge that gives the songs some extra grittiness, with the dirty synths and incredible energy. I love every song on Sound of Silver. Every minute, every beat and note is worth hearing. I love it dearly.
Lyrics you can smirk to. Grooves you can dance to. Real feels for this ex-NYC resident while listening to "New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down." My 11 years there overlaps heavily with LCD Soundsystem which might be why it rings so true. Signed, another North American Scum.
Incredible! Hooks you immediately and doesn’t let go. The album has so much fun rhythm and instrumentals that transport you into another world. The lyrics are thoughtful, the percussion is smacking, and the bangers are banging. All around a great album that I would like to own.
Best album of the 00s. That run of North American Scum, Someone Great and All My Friends would be the career highlight of any band. The fact you also get NY I Love You, Sound of Silver and Get Innocuous on the same album and the other tracks all slap too is just GREEDY. And this isn't always my favourite LCD album either. I think like the Fall, your two favourite LCD albums are the one you just listened to, and the one you haven't heard yet (album 5 plz James)
Was not expecting to like this as much as I did, some real synthy goodness in there and some fun experimental stuff throughout the whole album. Well put together, enjoyable from start to finish
Two albums out of the last 3 would make it into my top 5 of all time (obviously this one included!). LCD are one of them bands that have been a strong favourite of mine since about 2007 and this is my favourite album of theirs. Feel like I say it a lot, but every song is just a grade A belter. They manage to put in so many layers and complexity while making it sound so effortless. Someone Great and All My Friends still feels like a punch in the gut all these years later, and it’s impossible for me not to get lost in Get Innocuous or nostalgic with New York I Love You. North American Scum is the soundtrack of the mid 00s. I can taste the Red Stripe just hearing the intro bars. I’m convinced James Murphy is the best musician of my generation.
What an album, obviously a classic from the first listen. Not quite sure how I didn't get into this at the time, it combines all the best bits of noughties indie and older electronica but does it better. I knew most of the singles but the whole thing is consistently quality.
Heard this album quite a few times already and really like it. I would say the repetitive drum loops and electronic sound isn't usually my thing.... But it kinda reminds me of the postal service in parts too.. Was released and played a lot around uni times too. Highlights are North American scum, all my friends, and new York I love you. All my friends and new York are really great imo. All my friends gives me a really nostalgic feeling. I do think there is some filler in there but largely a great album
None
"Sound of Silver" is the second album by American rock band LCD Soundsystem. It's a combination of dance and rock. No better example of that then this album. It has also been categorized as dance-punk, dance-rock, electronica, electronic rock and indie rock. I love spelling out those genres daily since they might be the first and last time I hear or see some of them and have really no desire to dig deeper...again in some of them. LCD Soundsystem is basically James Murphy who plays everything and then others. This album received universal acclaim...rightfully so. An interesting fact: Murphy covered the entire recording studio in silver fabric and aluminum foil. And this album was recorded before " Better Call Saul." "Get Innocuous" gets the party started with percussion which builds becoming more complex. A repeating synth comes in... now we're dance. Hypnotic. It's a rat race, running people mindless. Of couse, when I hear this nowadays I immediately think of Grand Theft Auto 4. The album gets more funky and bass driven with "Time to Get Away." It's about getting away from an old manager. Cherry Glazerr did a killer cover version of this on their Sirius XMU Sessions. Droning sounds go into a Michael Jackson "Beat It" beat in the first single "North American Scum." I don't think Murphy can go more nasally than this. Annoying female backing vocals. He's going after everyone generalizing all Americans as scum. "Someone Great" was written about and actually the album dedicated to Bulgarian therapist Dr. George Kamen, a pioneer in group therapy, who had recently passed away and his methods were important to Mr. Murphy growing up. This song reminds me of The Talking Heads' movie "Stop Making Sense" in that instruments keep getting added with the momentum gaining. Reverbering, echoing keys to scratching to drums to outstated keys. Outstanding. "All My Friends" has a speedy train-like piano with rapid drums in the background maintaining the pace throughout the song. Murphy realizing he's at the end of his youthful party and where has all his friends gone. "US v Them" keeps the dance party going with more funk. Hey, a fun machine. Some think this is about a rival with a band, in particular, Hot Chip. Funny, I saw Hot Chip open for LCD on this tour. Everything seemed fine then. The last third of the album leans towards more straight-forward rock. "Watch the Tapes" is more new wave. I think about going through the work week in your twenties and waiting to party on the weekends. "Sound of Silver" starts with a cold bass line which transitions to synths and pianos. Is the Silver the silver of cassette tape? I would classify "New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down" as a both a ballad and a love/hate song for NYC. Maybe, a symbol for alcohol as well. "Sound of Silver" is one of my favorite albums of the 2000's. It's rare you listen to album where songs are actually busy and also allowed to breathe, take shape and develop. The songs on this album are those. Absolutely no filler. I hear every one of these songs today on the radio stations and other media that I listen and pay attention to. Obviously, a very high recommendation.
Love me some lcd sound system. I actually haven't listened to them much outside of radio hits. So this was a pretty cool listen.
I'm a big fan of this band. I like all their records. This might be their best.
Good 1st recommendation
