Reviews (page 8 of 14)
Strong 4. There were a few songs though that I was happy when they ended.
dani and david don't like, but I enjoyed!
This album had a lot more hits than the other Queen album we had. Definitely proggy and opera-y (no surprise). Just a good old fashioned rock out!
This was all pretty solid. Only knew the 2 hits from it but enjoyed everything else enough. Good Company sounded like Paul McCartney. Not much to say about You're My Best Friend and obviously Bohemian Rhapsody which is one of the greatest songs of all time. Love that it's pretty much 3 songs mashed into one ala Band on the Run and A Day in the Life.
Couple of absolute classics! Few also rans but great listen
No real standout songs aside from the obvious. Always a joy to listen to Freddie Mercury sing, scrapes a 4
39, best friend made this even prior to bohemian rhapsody. Lost it self a bit mid album but a cracker
Queen is a great singles band that also made albums. But this one comes closest to greatness. Of course, Bohemian Rhapsody and You’re My Best Friend and Love of My Life. Death on Two Legs and ‘39 are also great. I’m in Love With My Car otoh is truly awful. This one feels heavily influenced by Sgt Pepper in the sense of smashing together a bunch of disparate British music styles, which works and doesn’t at the same time. It’s probably a 3.5 but I’ll round up because the best stuff here is truly excellent
Queeny
Excellent Queen album!!
I don't think Queen is a particularly album oriented band, it seems to me that they did a better job of writing singles. This album is no exception, there isn't one clear theme or tone - but there are some damn good songs. Bohemian Rhapsody alone easily makes this album a 4. I don't think the rest of the album is strong enough to be a 5, but it is very good.
Great stuff. Already in Library - You're My Best Friend, 39, Love of my Life, Bohemian Rhapsody Added to Library - Death on Two Legs
What a fantastic album. This feels very different from everything else Queen did (at least that I listened to). I really enjoyed it. Feels like Queen's Sgt Peppers for some reason to me. I enjoyed the entire outside of "The Prophet's Song". It went on for wayyyyy too long and just wasn't good lol. "Bohemian Rhapsody" is obviously epic. There are some GREAT hits here. "Seaside Rendezvous" was so much fun! Actual rating... 4.5. Liked Songs: Everything except for "The Prophet's Song"
4.25
Wildes Album mit diesen verschiedenen Musikstilen. "The Prophets Song" war entsetzlich scheisse, aber der Rest......wow
The kings (or queens) of theatrical pop. Dramatic, over the top, ambitious, glorious.
Goed album, maar Queen is toch niet helemaal mijn stijl.
There are enough fantastic songs to justify this album's existence and a good rating. Not all of the songs are hits and some are just *mid* enough to justify not giving it 5-stars. With that said, it's still the best Queen album that we've had so far in this list and probably one of the best that we're likely to get from the group.
I'm really enjoying this album so far. I'm kind of surprised at how much I'm enjoying it. I don't think I would go out of my way for it necessarily, but if I was in the mood for some Queen I might reach for this album. Did not realize Bohemian was on this album. This album has some late Beatles vibes - especially Good Company.
I listened to this a lot when it was first released. Haven't heard it much since. Most of it still holds up.
vafan jag gillar ju queen
Wildly diverse: songs range from so bad it's good (I'm In Love With My Car) to so good it's bad (Bohemian Rhapsody). Death On Two Legs is an all-timer as far as album openings go.
Sounds like they recorded in a studio: perfect harmonies, solos, etc. Amazing live performance.
Pink Floyd is Queen Unplugged and Uncut. Incidentally, my father isn’t a fan of either! (He *does* like the Beatles, so conclusively, his mild reprovals have been less influential than Mom's prosecutorial, attack-is-the-best-form-of-defense school of musical appreciation.) I will never not sing along to Bohemian Rhapsody, and You're My Best Friend is a longtime fave. I'm in Love With My Car and ‘39 were first listens and also great. Freddie’s pipes and gusto elevates everything, even the gooier bubble gum bits.
Better than Coldplay
An eclectic mix of songs, most of which I like. I played a game with my friend where I had him try and guess the band. It was “I’m In Love With My Car” and “‘39”. He was pretty mad that I cheated by playing two unrecognizable Queen songs.
An album deserving of its status and importance amongst the Rock canon. Endlessly re-listenable and hard not to enjoy. only really suffers mainly from something akin to the Seinfeld Effect, where the sound has been so over-replicated it's missing its originality upon listening half a century later. fav tracks: Lazing On A Sunny Afternoon, Bohemian Rhapsody
Appreciated listening to this album. Fun song that was new to me: Seaside Rendezvous. Enjoyed the instrumentations, harmonies and lyrics in Love of My Life.
Very good.
Bit disappointed by this one. Just didn't live up the name in my eyes. Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the greatest/iconic songs of all time but there are far too many duds for this to be a "great" album. 3.5/5. Raising to a 4.
I wonder how many people coming into this project are listening to a full Queen album for the first time as opposed to the only the hits. A small part of me was expecting to find this album a little overrated, mostly due to some fatigue with Queen being played to death in most places. However, a lot of the deep cuts really showed up here, from The Prophet’s Song to ‘39 to Love of My Life. And yeah, there’s also Bohemian Rhapsody and You’re My Best Friend. There were a few weird songs (Seaside Rendezvous especially) that prevent me from saying this is perfect. But, for what it’s worth, I had a lot of fun with this one. Favorite track: Bohemian Rhapsody (basic I know, but let me have it) Other hits: You’re My Best Friend, ‘39, The Prophet’s Song, Death on Two Legs, Love of My Life
A towering achievement in rock history, A Night at the Opera is Queen at their most ambitious, theatrical, and sonically adventurous. From the operatic grandeur of “Bohemian Rhapsody” to the raw power of “Death on Two Legs,” the album showcases the band’s virtuosity and flair for drama. The production is lush, the songwriting bold, and Freddie Mercury’s vocals are nothing short of iconic. However, the album’s occasional detours into jazzy pastiche—like “Seaside Rendezvous” and “Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon”—while charming to some, for me they dilute the emotional and musical intensity for those who prefer Queen’s rockier edge. They feel more like whimsical sketches than essential statements. Still, it’s a near-masterpiece—just shy of five stars due to those indulgences.
A genre-blending orchestral album. Obviously highlighted by Bohemian Rhapsody, but some other really good tracks as well, with the typical Queen weirdness mixed in. Freddie Mercury is clearly in peak form, with group harmonies also showcased on many songs.
This has a few odd songs, but overall a great album. Amazing that Bohemian Rhapsody made it to radio! That was an accomplishment.
Death on Two Legs, Love of my Life: Good new to me songs. You're My Best Friend, Bohemian Rhapsody: Great not new to me songs. I'm in Love With my Car, The Prophet's Song: Absolute shit songs. Freddie is the best voice in R&R ever, yes. But Queen still belongs on a Greatest Hits album.
Loved it! Queen at their best? Bangers throughout, maybe 1 skip, maybe 0? Will revisit for sure.
Just a 4 by the skin of its teeth as a result of the strength of the obvious songs. There’s a lot of gimmicky shite on here though
Death On Two Legs starts the album strong and it ends quite bombastic with the Bohemian Rhapsody/God Save The Queen combo ending. But why did they put I'm In Love With My Car in here and furthermore was selected as the B-side of the Bohemian Rhapsody single? Fuck knows, Queen albums always have one or two tracks that make it lose the 5 star potential. Their best albums are their first 2 Greatest Hits compilations.
8/10 peam theater kid rock
A little eccentric and showcases wide range. Some truly great songs (Best Friend, bohemian rhapsody) and a few that were more skippable. ‘39 was my pleasant surprise track
Good old friend
Classic, so many great hits.
Fantastic album with some stone cold classics
So good. Loved ‘39 and Seaside Rendezvous
Best Song: Bohemian Rhapsody I am not a huge Queen fan but do appreciate and enjoy them (I had both Classic Queen and Greatest Hits in high school). However, this album is a first from start to finish. It is good, a bit more theatrical than I normally enjoy but their talent is impossible to miss. Plus, Bohemian Rhapsody will always be awesome! I'm sure that there will be more Queen that leans more towards rock and my liking. 4/5.
I love Queen, but I do find their albums messy.
Queen is probably the best rock band of all time but its not talked about enough how many showtunes their albums have. I love showtunes so its great, just not mentioned ever.
!!!
Come for the Bohemian Rhapsody, stay for Brian May singing like a quarter of the songs? BR being on this album puts the floor at a high 3/5. There’s definitely some filler, but there’s also some really solid deep cuts on here, too. “I’m in Love with My Car”, “Sweet Lady”, and “Love of my Life” are all good. Queen was sneaky good at creating beautiful harmonies, but a few too many jaunty, circusy tunes keep this at a 4/5 for me.
This album is epic in a way one could only imagine if you're only familiar with the hits, like I was. Not a moment goes by that I wasn't fully engulfed in the music. Pairs excellent with working on your car or arts and crafts.
"Bohemian rhapsody" +3, lots of filler but several phenomenal songs
Fun circus-like sounds. A handful of very enjoyable tracks other than Bohemian Rhapsody.
When I was a wee-lad, before the Bohemian Rhapsody biopic might I add, I got really into Queen and started rolling the snowball that would lead me to where I am with discovering music in such deep and niche levels. I thought today would be a good day to return back to my roots with listening to what may just be Queen's most iconic project out of a discography of iconic releases. Personally I have always favored The Works, but haven't listened in full in a decent amount of time so that could have easily changed. A Night At The Opera is equally as much Rock as it is also very operatic, this album feels full of emotions and these grand swings that showcase each member's respective skills to their fullest. Brian May makes the guitar parts feel both enjoyable and thoughtful with his masterful guitar playing. John Deacon plays a more unsung role of being a backbone to all the song compositions and providing the final "oomph" the project needs to be seem as huge. Freddie Mercury does what he does best and gives one hell of a vocal performance full of theatrics and swagger unseen by any other artists of his time and beyond. Finally we have Roger Taylor who provides the pace and even some writing credits to help put the final pieces in place to help make this album and Queen as much of a spectacle as they truly are. While not every song on this album is perfect, I do still think the highs make up for some of the more clunky tracks like Good Company and Seaside Rendezvous. Overall I am really satisfied with how Queen has held up through my music listening journey and I hope to adventure through them more later on, but for now I have to say this is solid.
classic
I loved getting to see Queen's "rocky" side. I didn't grow up listening to classics like Bohemian Rhapsody and had very little exposure to essential artists like Queen. This album showed me why they were so renowned. Their theeatrics and dramatic approach to song writing is what I love about them. Many of the songs feel like a true moment, something you want to listen closely to. The opener did a great job of setting the scene. The journey of a "rocky", displayed in "Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon", to a more delicate sound, like in "'39", was really interesting to me. Many elements stayed consistent, but it made the album more engaging to have different levels of energy.
Is This The Real Life? 1001 Albums Generator 93 (08/11/2025) I think the reason why Queen got so popular was that they could appeal to both the rock/metal heads as well as theater kids. Their music always walked the line between the extremely theatric music hall and the truly hard rock. At the center of this juxtaposition was the legendary vocalist Freddie Mercury, who had quite a knack for the dramatic, and guitarist Brian May, who is one of my personal favorite guitarists ever and has a tone that is quintessential rock. Queen's fourth studio album, A Night At The Opera, is their best Queen because it has the best mix of these two aspects of the band. Obviously, the key track here is Bohemian Rhapsody. I almost don't even want to talk about it because like, it's Bohemian Rhapsody. What am I supposed to say? All 5 parts of this through-composed song are legendary in their own right and every member of the band is at the top of their game here. What I do want to talk about however, is the unfairly maligned little brother of this legendary song, The Prophet's Song. It is also through-composed, progressive, epic, and it has some wonderful vocal acrobatics courtesy of Freddie Mercury. The a capella canon is wonderful and gets me every time. I have always loved this song and felt that it deserved just as much praise as BoRhap. Some of the more straightforward songs here are also amazing. You're My Best Friend is another hit that is so goshdarn cute. Love Of My Life is also really sweet. I actually like Roger Taylor's contribution, I'm In Love With My Car, even though people apparently don't like this one. Death On Two Legs is a legendary opener that is kind of experimental in its production choices and also has some of the heaviest guitar on the whole thing. Speaking of heavy guitar riffs, Sweet Lady blew my socks off. I had totally forgotten this deep cut, but it is really good. Vocally, it isn't Freddie's best moment, but it may very well be Brian May's finest moment outside of The Prophet's Song. If anything holds this album back, it's the fact that members other than Freddie were allowed to take lead vocals. '39 is a stompin, hollerin romp that I can't take seriously and Good Company is one of those highly theatrical songs that is kind of nothing. In general, these very theatrical songs are hit or miss. I actually love Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon, and Seaside Rendezvous is sweet. I could do without God Save The Queen but like I get it. A Night At The Opera is the first Queen album I would recommend to people trying to get into it. A combination of very recognizable songs with great deep cuts make it their most consistent album. 4.5/5, rounded down to 4. Favs: You're My Best Friend The Prophet's Song Bohemian Rhapsody Least Fav: Good Company
No private session used for Spotify. I like this album, it's got some overplayed hits but it has some good Queen songs that weren't played to death on the radio and didn't make it on The Greatest Hits album. Interesting to hear the songs that were written by some of the other members of Queen as well.
This was a lot better than Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack. I really enjoyed the song about his car. Ask me about my car dream I had once.
some just weird queen songs but also some iconic ones. bohemian rhapsody automattically ups this
A classic for a reason. Really enjoyed it
I *really* enjoyed this: i T felt like an album I *should* have listened to by now, and it didn’t disappoint. From the first track (one of the best diss tracks I’ve heard), I was hooked - and although I didn’t need a song about being in love with a car, pretty much every song slapped. Despite the hate-filled start, this is an album about love. It’s got two of the sweetest love songs in the world, one about friendship, but written for a lifelong romantic partner, the other apparently romantic, but written for a lifelong friend. And then at the end, in context, Bohemian Rhapsody closes the album like… well, a night at the opera. Astonishingly good.
This album truly begs the question: Can a single indisputably outstanding song lift an otherwise mediocre collection of songs into the realm of greatness? The other songs on this album are certainly serviceable. While taking part in this project, I've listened to dozens of albums (possibly over 100 of the 350 I've rated so far, actually) filled with songs just as competent but forgettable (and occasionally embarrassingly cringe-worthy) as most of the songs on this album. What those other albums lack, of course, is their very own "Bohemian Rhapsody." If two or three other songs here were even one-quarter as good as that song (almost certainly a consensus top 5 of all time, so a big order, admittedly) this is a slam dunk 5 instead of a 4 rating. Or, looked at another way, this would have been Led Zeppelin IV instead of what it actually is. One more note. A couple of weeks ago, I got Queen II, and commented on how it reflected a very talented but ultimately immature group, with somewhat embarrassing tracks about evil trolls versus white queens and other such clearly Tolkien-inspired lyrics not uncommon for the era. The band had largely (but not completely) moved away from that by this point (two albums later), but "The Prophet's Song" is clearly still revisiting that phase of their development. On this listening, though, I came to realize that "Bohemian Rhapsody" is also a song like that. Or a parody of a song like that which somehow spirals into a greatness that a more straight-laced approach could never have achieved.
This album feels like a perfect blend of the hard rock, prog, and glam bits of Queen all blended into one quirked up smoothie, so why is it one of my least favorite I've listened to from the group? Don't get me wrong, this album is good, Bohemian Rhapsody alone would assure that, so all the other stuff here just feels like a neat bonus; I'm especially a fan of the shorter, goofier tracks. However, that's exactly the problem, even the other hits here just don't feel all too special. You're My Best Friend just feels like it is made for commercials, and Love of My Life has a solid base, but I wish it did more with said base. It's a pleasant experience, and worth your time if you like the sillier side of rock, but it feels like they made some momentous shit, and filled out the rest of the of album quickly in order to get that/those songs out as soon as possible. I think a combination of this and its sister album, A Day at the Races, would make one of the best rock albums of all time, but for now I just feel like this is a tad half-baked. In the way where a half-baked cookie still tastes good, but it's missing something.
Well, they certainly did push the boundaries! I don't think I've ever listened to this whole album before. While it does have their biggest hit, it also has some really big flops. Back in the day, when you bought an album, you put it on and listened to the whole thing - all the way through. It gave you a better perspective of what the band was thinking. If I bought this - I don't think I would have made it to Bohemian Rhapsody. 3 or 4 great songs and a lot that are not so great. Give it 4 stars just for Bohemian Rhapsody.
I like this album. I think I enjoyed it a bit above just a like album so I'm going to give it 4 stars.
One of the best, few mid songs but nothing beats Bohemian Rhapsody
Kudos for Queen creating a rock opera that isn’t 4 hours long and overly self indulgent. It’s probs the shortest rock opera since Houmous & Chutneys controversial, satirically charged 15 second long album ‘Gateau Opera le Rock’ 4.0 9/12 Love of My Life
Killer songs, killer album, killer Queen!
So many classics and, of course, one of the best Pop Songs ever written. Fav: Bohemian Rhapsody
4 out of 5. Credit where it's due, and besides the overplayed Bohemian Rhapsody, this was a good time.
Just so far ahead of it's time in songwriting and musical production...def a few skips on it, but so many deep classics. You're My Best Friend and Bohemian Rhapsody get it 4 stars alone.
Had never listened to this as an album, only songs. Strong tunes and production.
This album is big and dramatic and Queen effin rules
It's really good at its best but prophets song and I'm in love with my car are too bad to ignore. Can't be a 5
Incredibly accurate title. Didn't feel like an album. It felt like a whole production
Några starka, några inte lika starka. 4:a
I mean, what can I say that hasn't been said? Seaside Rendezvous had some great alternative instrumentations. The Prophets Song had some great rounds and a really nice string closing leading into Love of my Life so well. Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon is just such a vibe. And of course, there's Bohemian Rhapsody. Quite close to a 5, but not everything hit so it's like a 4.5. would listen again (even to I'm in Love with my Car lol).
Really enjoy this one. Queen brings their theatrical style to the classic rock sensibilities of the time, and they make it work.
incredibly self-indulgant i love it 8.2/10
1001 Albums (Once A Day) - (1/1001) Rating 1 album a day from this random book called 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die by Robert Dimery where a bunch of so called music connoisseurs decide the essential records that everyone must hear Ohhh you think you're SOO smart you think YOU know EVERYTHING about music Huh??? OK pal we'll see come on lets see. Honestly? Not as inconsistent as people make it out to be. There are three songs on here that I consider to be amazing songs. Those three tracks are Death on Two Legs, The Prophet's Song, and Bohemian Rhapsody. Death on Two Legs is punchy, energetic, instrumentally engaging, and catchy. Really a top notch intro. Sets the tone well. The harmonies on The Prophet's Song are gorgeous. The song progresses really nicely and I love how the harmony suddenly stops and the instrumental kicks in it tickles my brain nicely. But Bohemian Rhapsody is (of course) their magnum opus track. Absolute banger. Fantastic riffs, such great vocals from Mercury and the build-up is awesome as well. The rest of the album is consistent within their own realm, but never reach quite as high as the top 3 managed to. Maybe I'm just a sucker for these cliche pop rock tracks but honestly they're done really well for the most part. Some of the lyricism is undoubtedly dated like 'I'm in Love with My Car' (seriously man) and on that end the cliche aspect definitely doesn't work for me but honestly as a whole this album flows really nicely and gives me hope for the rest of this challenge. Admittedly I'm not as in tune with this era of music as I'd like to be so maybe this challenge will change that, and maybe I'll get tired of the cliches presented on this album but as of now, I'd say it's pretty high on the awesome scale. ballsmcgee out 😛🤟🤟🤟 Favs: Death on Two Legs, The Prophet's Song, Bohemian Rhapsody
Queen were one of the first bands I loved when I was younger, they were my favorite band for a long time. This was the first Queen album I heard all the way through I considered it a 10 through and through. However, I find myself having this general issue with Queen albums a lot, they have next to no cohesion as one piece, like you could shuffle almost any Queen song from 1975-1977 and throw a mix on an album and you’d get the same effect. That being said, what usually saves a Queen album is the fact that their songs are all generally very strong. This album opens with “Death On Two Legs” a rocking diss track that gets you pumped to start this album. However, the album they falls into a slump for the next two tracks “Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon” is fine but it lasts barely any time and “I’m In Love With My Car” is well… it’s not great. “You’re My Best Friend” takes us out of the slump though with an excellent song with a wonderful vocal performance from Freddie. “‘39” might be my favorite song on the record it’s folky sound is really pleasant and the lyrics are great. “Sweet Lady” is ok but I’m not that into it. “Seaside Rendezvous” is actually great, it kinda reminds me of songs like “You Gave Me The Answer” and “Honey Pie” by Paul McCartney and I really enjoy those songs and this one. “The Prophet’s Song” is one of the greatest epics Queen wrote the extended vocal break is super cool and the hard rock portions are excellent. “Love Of My Life” is a classically tinged and excellently performed love song. “Good Company” is ok I guess. “Bohemian Rhapsody” is great it truly is but like many Queen hits it has kinda lost its power for me and especially over the last several years since the film came out I’ve heard it soooo many times. This album is good, I have my issues with it but in spite of its issues its a good record and a fun album
Great representation of everything Queen can be. The first half suite is perfect. The rest is great.
man, Queen continues to blow me away with their full records. Brian May absolutely crushes on this album, and its just so fun to listen to. I think the only song I thought was meh was, The Prophet's Song, but otherwise this album rocked. not to mention that it is peppered with all time hits, having 'You're my Best Friend' and the eternally classic 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.
3 iconic songs: you’re my best friend, love of my life, and bohemian. I was kinda surprised that the rest of the album did fall a little flat. Some of the other songs just seem so half baked. I do absolutely love the piano part on love of my life. Now the bohemian rhapsody bit. This song might be one of the greatest compositions of all time. It does one of the greatest things you can do in music which is blend so many different cultures and styles into a completely new entity. The layered voices acapella section, which honestly I really don’t know enough music history to even know what inspired this because there’s really nothing else quite like it but maybe some kind of barbershop vibe with its razor sharp harmonies. The British power ballad section. The operatic section circa Italian/german/austrian influences. The American influenced hard rock section. And then finally a classically themed coda with a simple one handed piano outro that could’ve been written by Bach or Beethoven. I don’t think a song will ever pierce pop culture quite like this song has ever again. Wish I could give it a five just for bohemian but I think as an album it’s a 4.
"Bohemian Rhapsody" has such a pop culture impact that it's hard to even describe. This album could be 37 minutes of silence and then 6 minutes of Rhapsody and it would still get a positive rating. The rest of the album is classic queen sound. You're not going to be disappointed if that's what your into. Shout out to "You're My Best Friend" as well. I think this is a 9/10 for me.
I mean… it’s Queen. Listening to this album front to back made me realize how versatile their sound could be — from hard rock and ballads to vaudeville. I had a fun time discovering some new tracks on this album, with ‘39 being the standout. Favorite tracks: - You’re My Best Friend - ‘39 - Love of My Life - Bohemian Rhapsody
What a fucking album, highs and lows, all in all a good album
Queen cast their musical net further and wider than ever before, pulling off an ambitious vision where expertly layered production allows the complex songs to add even more bombast to the brawn of their previous (and best) albums. I prefer II and Sheer Heart Attack, but this is still a step above anything they made afterwards. A little too cabaret for me compared to the previous two! Favourite tracks: Death on Two Legs, '39, The Prophet's Song (epic), Bo Rhap
a classic
So good. Really high quality. I think I will enjoy relistening regularly. Much more beatles sound and influence than I've noticed before in queen. Paul McCartney style I guess. Some quite progy bits too though. You can hear how they influenced muse. (and the darkness.) Love of my life is really excellent. Borap too of course. Layered guitars and the guitar technique are really impressive in parts.
Listen to this with Good Company.
I was ready to give this a 5 star easy and then I got to the prophet song, and that got too wonky for me. 4.5 from me! extra brownie points after I learned that some of this was recorded in a barn
Hey it's Queen! Pretty fun vibes all around. Fun listening to them play around on their non-hit songs.
It's crazy to me that, despite having maybe the greatest collection of singles and hits of ANY rock band, and having the type of sound where any live cover of any of their songs likely result in thunderous applause, they were just inept at putting together a truly compelling album. There is some treasure here, but songs like Good Company ruin what could easily be a 5 with their level of talent.
Enjoyable overall, with some all-timer songs to elevate it.
Even before Freddie starts singing, the guitar is so Queen in sound, it's awesome. INSANE production quality. The songs are full of theater kid energy that would normally put me off, and yet.... If there's one complaint I have, it's that it's really not structured like an album, more just a collection of songs. Thus, as incredible as Bohemian Rhapsody is, it comes out of nowhere in the context of the album. At least it has a cute outro in God Save The Queen. Standouts: Death On Two Legs • I'm In Love With My Car • You're My Best Friend • Seaside Rendezvous • Bohemian Rhapsody
This album is so fun to listen to. It's really like attending an opera. It has it's highs and lows and everything in between. So many bands attempted to do this after Queen, but nothing compares to the original. The only real reason why I can't give it a 5 stars is that there are a few skippable songs on this album, and I usually only hold out for 5 stars for the albums that I think are perfect pretty much from beginning to end without any skippable songs. Skippable songs: Seaside Rendezvous The Prophet's Song (way too long and boring) God Save The Queen 4/5
Another pretty good album. Certainly not my favorite band of all time, but I do enjoy some Queen. That said, the hits sorta carry this one hard.
I wish I loved my car.
Best so far.
Drama i dusjen
The transition from the "I Love my Car" song to the "You're my Best Friend" song is hilarious
Overall great album with some spectacular moments
A great album and a joy to listen to.
Bohemian Rhapsody, Love of My Life, You’re my best friend, lazing on a Sunday afternoon
This is a classic album.
I know the songs but have not listened to this album. This is great. I love the song ‘39. Queen has such a great and diverse catalog. What a band.
Maybe I would have more fondness if I grew up with it but it’s undeniable, if not overblown. Queen at the top of their game but, while they’re one of the best singles bands of all time, their albums can be uneven. With A Night at the Opera, they come the closest to greatness through the track listing. Also it would be years until they make up for the sins of I’m In Love with My Car by releasing Bicycle Race.
Queen is great.
A few bad songs on the album but 'Bohemian Rapsody' brings it up to a 4 for me. Oddly 'I'm in love with my car' is not the worst song on the album and helps bring it up to a 4
Loved it but wouldn't listen to it over and over - the car song didn't bother me as much as I expected, but it still clashes with the rest of the album
Nice
Dels meus àlbums preferits de Queen. Cançó preferida: Love of my life. La cançó '39 me romp una mica la dinàmica del disc (al menys al inici). Al final m'ha acabat agradant.
Zuhause, Heidenheim, Deutschland Nicht mein liebstes Queen-Album, aber top!
Highly experimental album from Queen that is mostly fairly average apart from two Stella hits and you’re my best friend and the legendary Bohemian Rhapsody that take this album next level
4/5 Undeniable. I don't like the la la la la la la la la la song tho, that blew.
i, too, am in love with my car
A rock opera was promised and 100% delivered. There was drama, humour, love, and tragedy. I give many thanks to Queen for helping popularize rock operas and inspiring some of my favourite albums. That said, the “I love my car” song should never have seen the light of day -1
Of course, Bohemian Rhapsody is a masterpiece
Like most Queen albums, there are a few incredible songs, some good ones, and some straight filler. The amazing (as always) performances keep this at a 4.0/5.0. 4.0/5.0: Great
enjoyed this way more than queen ii. there are a few really great songs on this one
Nice way to start the week
This is a great album. Some absolute top class songs, and possible the greatest song ever.
I didn’t realize this album was so theatrical. It’s a bit silly at times, but “Bohemian Rhapsody” bumps it to a four.
Call me the princess the way I look up to Queen.
Bohemian rhapsody is objectively probly a top 10 song ever, and there are other good ones
Queen Queen are a fantastic singles band. I've never heard an album I've got into start to finish. And this isn't an exception. The harmonies are excellent of course, and May highly proficient, and it offers up some of the best moments in the history of rock. None more so than Bohemian Rhapsody; it's operatic scale and ambition is jaw-dropping (its ubiquity nothwitstanding). Unfortunately it's followed up by 'Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon' an annoyingly deliberate pastiche with arch vocals. So something of a frustrating listen, but with some fine ballads, and some overblown rock epics (with which you just have to suspend cynicism and get carried away). It's right in that 3/4 boundary. For my own sanity I'll choose to ignore the vaudeville stuff, and concentrate on the Rhapsody, Prophet, Death, Love, Best Friend album core. That must tip a four mustn't it?
Not really a massive Queen fan but this one is good, not sure there’s a bad song on it really
I see this as the best queen album, where they went quite weird
Far more interesting and varied than the typical "Greatest Hits" played on repeat would suggest. 4.5
quite good, refreshing
It's Queen. It's iconic.
It’s fucking QUEEN!!!
More of a Rock sound queen guy but it is still one of their classics with a lot of great songs
Some legit bangers and I want to love Queen. However too many different styles colliding here not all of which work for me so I’m stuck at like and admire. Still a lot to admire though
Wow the bohemian rhapsody album
Goes down smooth
Bohemian rhapsody is the only song on this album I like, but it’s an incredible song. The song about the car and the prophet song are both fucking terrible. Like among the worst songs I’ve ever heard. And Freddie mercury is impressive but also I find some of his breathy histrionics grating. On the fence between a 3 and a 4 but I’ll go 4 because boho rhapsody is one of the most original songs in all of classic rock.
I seriously hate Car songs, and I’m In Love With My Car is the worst Car song I’ve ever heard. Freddie is the best, Brian May has such a recognizable tone and style. Boho Rhap - as the kids call it - will never, ever get old.
haven’t really listened to Queen other then their top hits. album really showed off their musical talent beyond simply pop/dance songs. liked it a lot!!
This was the first rock album I ever got. Around age 12. I loved it then and listening now brought back great memories. Also the first concert I ever went to. Back then it was fairly meaningless to others, but the millennials in my life think it’s so cool I got to see Freddy Mercury in his prime.
Rock Opera Gods
Premier réflexe : oouuuf ça me tente pas. 2e écoute : je me surprends à aimer. Il y a des pièces qui pognent pas pour moi mais d'autres très fortes et qui lancent des belles explorations. Coup de coeur pour Love of My Life et The Prophet's Song. Bohemian Rhapsody je me suis forcé à réécouter, et faut que j'avoue que c'est solide. Mama, I don't want to die, I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all!!
Undeniably a bold and groundbreaking album. Bohemian Rhapsody alone makes this legendary. But with that said it has a lot of misses too. I appreciate the egalitarian nature of this band to allow other members to have their own songs on this album. But when you have one of the greatest singers in the history of rock music, it just wastes space not track to have him on every track
Amazing album. Some "deep cuts" if you could call them that, really just tracks that don't normally play on radio or parties, but are so solid (Love of My Life, Death on Two Legs, and then of course You're My Best Friend and Bohemian Rhapsody. Might be the best Queen album, not as close to them as I should be. Still some weird stuff in the interstitial that are absolutely skippable, which is why it's not a 5. But it's close.
V good
Side one is perfect with great song after great song. The Prophet's song gets side 2 off to a shaky start. Nice recovery with Love of my life. All in all a good album. 8/10.
4,5 Sempre um espetáculo
Really wish I could do a 3.5. It's not bad, but queen was never a great album band. They could make great singles, but their not really one definitive queen album. Though this one is pretty good.
I am self-aware enough to know that I am tending to a slightly higher rating as a fan. But I think the things that stand out are - the variety within the operatic, ‘big’ rock. Plenty you would expect but then the experimental Seaside Rendezvous and then The Prophets Song, felt like it could slot into any kind of fantasy rock album. - Superlative guitar as always and good vocals - Bohemian Rhapsody that I reckon easily has to be in the top 10 pop songs ever It’s probably still a bit ‘inaccessible’ for people who don’t consider themselves Queen fans but as one myself think it’s great.
As possibly only Alex knows, Queen had such a hold over me from the age of 15 - 18, it bordered on obsession. At the time I preferred mainly Queen's later work - but time and maturity have drawn me back to the earlier albums. A Night at the Opera is an interesting "mid point" for Queen. The heavy, prog rock style of the first 3 albums is beginning to fade, replaced by the excess and pomp of opera, that became Queen's trademark. What results (and is even more refined in the follow up, A Day at the Races), is a truly special mix of styles, that I don't believe Queen ever got close to again. It's so excessive, so indulgent, but also so fresh, that they absolutely get away with it. My favourite songs on the album actually lean toward "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon," and "Seaside Rendezvous", purely because not a single artist aside from Queen could have pulled them off. You're My Best Friend, and Bohemian Rhapsody are deserved classics, and the rendition of God Save the Queen never gets old. This album is a solid, high four for me.
There are magnificent peaks on this album, and it's not just the radio superhits: tracks like The Prophet's Song (a pleasant surprise which somehow rivals even Bohemian Rhapsody in its scope and execution) and the furious, seething Death on Two Legs prove that this album is much more than its singles. It's a progressive record bursting with creativity, even if some of the material in between the peaks are somewhat grating. I could do without the Taylor/May solo tracks. They’re good singers, good enough that you wouldn't be surprised to find them fronting their own bands in this era, but that's precisely the problem: it’s the moments that Freddie takes a back seat that the album starts resembling the more run-of-the-mill rock of the 70s. Hearing Taylor croon about his Alfa Romeo dispels some of the magic cast by Freddie's bombastic vocals. However: if handing the reins over to the rest of the band for a few tracks is the cost of being able to deliver insane vocal harmonies like in Bohemian Rhapsody and the May-created Prophets Song, I really can't complain too much. Easy 4.
For me there’s too many skippable songs for me to give it 5 stars. Even with the stature of Bohemian Rhapsody.
Ja dit was leuk
Oh man I always thought I really don’t care about the lyrical content of a song but “I’m in Love With My Car” has disproved that. Other than that great album.
I always put Queen in the category of “singles band” and this isn’t really an exception here, but the non hits are pretty good, but nowhere on par with their greats.
Very nice
More like A Night At The Vaudeville. Okay, it's Queen... we expect campness but some of it veered a little to close to cheesy for my taste. Still, even this is incredibly well executed. As for the rest; a great record. Some burning guitars and Freddy magic. Also let's be fair, it has Bohemian Rhapsody. Favourite tunes (aside from the obvious): Death on Two Legs, '39, Sweet Lady.
Yeah
never really spent much time with this one beyond the hits. was pretty enjoyable
I feel like maybe I've not given Queen enough credit (and Brian May in particular). Which sounds weird, since they're often in the conversation of greatest rock bands ever (with one of the greatest rock guitarists). While I never thought that opinion was wrong, I've always personally knocked them for a variety of reasons- inane lyrics, gimmicky songs, etc. This was actually the first time I've listened to an album of theirs all the way through, and maybe that's been the issue. I immediately enjoyed the first track (Death on Two Legs) and thought it was pretty awesome. Second track less so, but then the guitar in I'm In Love with My Car brought it back to good. And so it went, with the rest of the album, that I really enjoyed the majority of everything on it. The music was pretty great and sounded like it could've been composed in the present, decades later. I even enjoyed some of the change-of-pace tracks that I was not expecting, like '39. Of course, I still feel like the lyrical aspect of the songs just underwhelms on a number of tracks. For as much vocal talent they have in the band, I wish they were singing about more complex topics and a greater depth of emotions more often. The songs are written by different members of the band, so it's not one person's fault as far as I'm aware. There's also some of the compositions I just could not get into- Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon and the show tune-esque Seaside Rendezvous, for example, really did nothing for me (conversely, I enjoyed Good Company). The "opera" concept they fed in really was a bit much at times too; it took me until the drop off into the rock riff for Prophet's Song to not consider it an easy skip. Obviously, though, that's more subjective, and the concept worked amazingly on Bohemian Rhapsody to bring the whole thing together. What the album does well, it does incredibly well. Most of the rest is fine at worst. There are a few parts I would say are not good, but mostly because they they didn't stand up to what they did well on the rest of the album. Even so, the album worked as a whole and did a good job of bringing some unique parts together. Definitely something I can see myself coming back to for repeat listens. Overall: 4.2/5
This is Queen at their most ambitious and flamboyant. It's a thrilling, genre-bending ride that showcases their incredible musicianship and Freddie Mercury's unparalleled showmanship. While sometimes bordering on excessive, its sheer creativity and iconic moments make it a masterpiece of rock.
I’d probably attend the opera more if it sounded like this. Bombastic theatricality combined with silly seaside songs? Fuck yeah. There are some classic Queen jams, some silly Queen jams, and some less than classic Queen jams, but this is a very strong album overall. I’d be tempted to give it a 5, though I feel it’s properly a 4. Like a 4.5?
IMO Queen is at their least interesting when they are in straight head rock mode. This album has a lot of twists and turns that let Freddie Mercury really fly. I don't think I'll ever be a huge Queen fan, but I can appreciate what they are doing here.
Great album. Not good background music. Have to listen to intently.
A solid Queen experience including Best Friend and Bohemian Rhapsody, but also B-sides including I'm In Love With My Car. Glad to have finally listened to this one after its mention in the Bohemian Rhapsody movie.
Metal with a lot of polish. The clean blends and multi-tracking make this a perfect listen on headphones. A handful of hits with a few new deep track finds. This was a pleasant surprise.
A classic album with one of the greatest songs of all time, brought down by a few sub-par tracks still a great listen
3 legendary songs and songs others
I like queen, this is good
Mama, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, didn't mean to make you cry If I'm not back again this time tomorrow Carry on, carry on as if nothing really matters
Somehow I'd only heard the big one. Still hits pretty hard. Interesting to hear the story of their old contract, screwing them pretty hard, and then listening to the opener, which is on the nose to say the least. Anyway bigger range then they maybe showed in later years. Good ass band.
• 4/5 • Amazing diversity, yet everything is well executed, interesting, and fun to listen to • hadn’t realized until listening carefully the extent of Freddie’s self-accompaniment through multitrack
WOULD LISTEN again
Amazing album for a rock opera album, however the second part of the album felt a bit weak until Bohemian Rhapsody saved it.
Couple bangers. Couple awful songs. And some in between. Bangers keep it at a 4.
I was a little torn on this one. I do love queen as do most people but maybe a little too theartrical on this one and heavy bias towards it. However to build so many themes and drama into their songs is impressive. This album contains arguably their best song but the style of this album in general may divide. I respect their theatre and show like resonnance but I think they did better albums. A band I would like to have watched for the show more than their music. They were amazing showmen.
Fab
More up my street. Very well sequenced. As someone who's never really gotten into Bohemian Rhapsody, I was surprised how well it fitted into this, so I guess the eclectism of the project really works in it's favour.
Second album proposé par le générateur après Queen II que j'avais noté 3.5/5. Ce second album contient, lui, des titres mémorables tels Sweet Lady, et bien sur Bohemian Rhapsody. Il rejoindra probablement ma collection ! =>4/5
it’s queen, it’s good. no way
Only ever listened to Bohemian Rhapsody. Rest of the album fits the bill.
Great album, more early british-metal sounding than I would expect from queen
Reconheço o talento técnico/artístico mas não fez meu gosto.
Here's a band that plays opera, music hall, jazz, country, carnival and baroque pop and has the right to call itself one of the best ROCK bands in history. Let's put out a wild, eclectic album of varied styles with energy, humor and creative drive and then we'll put GODDMANED BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY as the next-to-last track. Gods.
Obvs some great songs but inconsistent.
Trippy. Good
You could make a Best Of Queen and it would be one of the best albums ever. A lot of variation. Some of it is among the greatest music ever, but not all of it is that great or even good. Favorite song: death on two legs.
A good album. Beyond the greatness of Bohemian Rhapsody, this album still has quite a few gems. Plus even when is messing around and being goofy it still sounds pretty cool. 7/10
When the generator gave me Queen II, I thought it would at least be fun, but instead found it a bit dull. This is more what I had in mind - it’s all over the place, but I can’t say it bored me.
"qUeeN iS tHe MoSt oVeRRaTeD bAnD oF aLL TiMe" bitch shut up! Favourite Songs: Death on Two Legs (Dedicated To...), You're My Best Friend, Love of My Life, Bohemian Rhapsody. Least Favourite Songs: I'm in Love with My Car, God Save the Queen.
Kinda awsome
I mean...it's Queen. They're gods. Album Cover: 6.5/10 Top Songs: Love Of My Life (I sing this to Blaze) Lazing On a Sunday Afternoon Death on Two Legs
Nothing jumped out at me at first listen other than Bohemian Rhapsody but I wasn’t listening too closely. Enjoyed having it on while working.
7/10…glam rock / classic rock
I'm giving this a 4 'cause Queen rules but I'd actually give it a 3.5. Only reason is because if Freddie Mercury is your singer, why are other people singing songs with their sub par voices? Pull your head out of your asses, other guys, and let the man sing.
It's got some good tracks of course, my problem is with the more saccharine ones
This album is Queen. It has the amazing guitar work, great vocals, cheek lyrics. It might not be their best album but you get 100% of the Queen style when listening to it. I had forgotten that Bohemian Rhapsody was on this one. Guess I need relisten to their discography.
A great album with a lot of diverse tracks. Very different listen than just listening to the singles. Only thing that detracts from it is the mixing, making you adjust the volume from track to track sometimes.
A truly unique band that took risks that paid off. Who knew opera with raging guitar solos could be this effective? It's not my favorite of their albums, but I get it.
This album reminded me that in the 70s Queen were seen as part of the metal movement and having a Queen badge on the back of your denims was not seen as odd. There's variety here, obviously a couple of absolutely stand out songs. I still don't quite love Queen enough to give them the full 5. They were right to be annoyed about the car song too.
Liked it!
True to its title
OK, this is one more album that I'm glad I had to check out. Bohemian Rhapsody is of course the highlight, but there was a lot to discover. British music hall inspiration, more gay themes, and just a great polish to all the songs. Great to hear these songs in their original album context
I love this one fr. So iconic and enjoyable
Solid classic rock. I'm in Love with My Car went hard and the other classics still slap.
I am surprised that this is the first full Queen Album I've listedn to. The quality definitely varies a lot between songs. Really liked Love of my Life, and Bohemian Rhapsody is still a classic. You're My Best Friend is great as well. But yeah, it is definitely being carried hard by a couple of bangers. 4/5.
This album demonstrates the wide genres that Queen covered. Some of it is very caberet-like and theatrical, while the rest of it swings to guitar driven hard (almost) hard rock. Bohemian Rhapsody is completely bizarre, yet hugely commercial and no doubt of the most innovative rock tracks ever. Brian May's guitar playing is great throughout the album asnd Freddie Mercury's ability to bounce from genre to genre is very Impressive. Somewhere between a 4 and 5 for me.
Definitely fun! I enjoyed this one a lot it’s engaging and has a lot to offer.
The only reason this rating is so high is because of Bohemian Rhapsody
OK, let’s talk about Queen, and no, I’m not about to start rambling about how they’re the most amazing band ever and how this album is some untouchable masterpiece that proves their unparalleled genius. I’ve heard that speech too many times. Growing up, it felt like every conversation I had about music eventually led to someone telling me how Queen was the greatest band of all time and how everything else I liked was basically trash in comparison. According to them, nothing I’d ever discover in the future could possibly hold up to the magnificent Queen. And then there’s Bohemian Rhapsody! I am beyond sick of that song. Between it being used in movies like Wayne’s World, blasted at every live event, and shoved into every radio format imaginable, I don’t care how good it is, after a while, enough is enough. Now, here’s the part where the Queen fans might actually like what I have to say. Other than the greatest hits album my dad had when I was a kid, I had never actually listened to a full Queen album until recently. About six months ago, I finally played my first one, and to my surprise, it was actually really good. There were a lot of songs I wasn’t familiar with that I genuinely enjoyed. The same thing happened with this album. I went in expecting the worst, but once it started, I found myself really enjoying it. If I could make one small tweak, I’d just remove Bohemian Rhapsody and take the rest. I don’t know if my gut reaction to Queen will ever go away, but at least I’m enjoying their albums a lot more than I expected.
4.2 2x
4* 87%
Good album, classic songs
Queen is the shit. And this album is really good.
Banger, maar wel paar nummers die echt alleen werken binnen de context van t album
Previously rated: Queen II (4/5) Sheer Heart Attack (5/5) *************************** There are some great songs here, though I've heard Bohemian Rhapsody to death - I'm bored with it. There is also a boring lull in the second half or else I'd consider giving this a 5.
Queen is to me one of them few cases where their compilation album makes them seem like a top tier band because of top tier hits. But after my second queen album with top tier hit songs laced i gotta say that i think that i didnt experienced an overall stunning album listen yet. Still entertaining and a good listen but the highs to the lows are still a bigger gap. (3.5/5.0)
This entire album is really spectacular, small moments here and there I lost the flow with but overall had me completely engaged.
bohemian rhapsody >>>>>
First tracks nearly put me off the whole album but then Queen at their finest.
Queen is typically considered a singles band, but this is still a great album! Songs like '39 are underrated.
84% Best: Death on Two Legs; You’re My Best Friend; Sweet Lady; The Prophet’s Song; Bohemian Rhapsody Must-Hear? Sure
It's a long long time since I listened to this album - it will be interesting to see if the reality matches my recollection of an elaborately recorded and produced album with some real standout tracks. Over the years, I wouldn't class Queen as a favourite band, but I'm going into this with a neutral approach.
The bulk of this album gets by purely on the backs of the 3 singles. Half of the songs don't deserve the monumental status given to them by simply existing on an album with Bohemian Rhapsody, You're My Best Friend and Death On Two Legs. That said, I don't think there's any world where I'm In Love With My Car should be released to the world. Seaside Rendezvous and Good Company are fun little bops
It’s got some great hits, but it also has quite a few novelty type songs that I could live without. Probably a 3.5 for me personally, but I’ll round up for their willingness to switch things up.
Just like Sheer Heart Attack, I can't quite bring myself to give this album five stars. I think it's because of the vaudeville-style tracks scattered among the rock bangers. Four stars is all, but I am going to add it to my Tidal library.
Solid album with some really great tracks and energy, including Bohemian Rhapsody.
This was a good listen! I don't think I'd listened to this album before but of course knew the hits. One song I had to check it was definitely Queen as it was so folky! Just solid music.
Great stuff. I never really listen to Queen and I'll admit I think they can get a bit much after a while but this album is definitely a banger, good variety.
Muy bueno, al césar (la reina) lo que es del césar (de la reina), pero sí que un poco...... obnoxious
Lovely record and very accurately titled.
A four tilted towards the hits if im being perfectly honest
Love the hits and the theatrical nature of the album
Theatrical
It’s good. Overplayed for sure. Hey radio DJs… did you know Queen had more than five songs?
In some ways this feels like peak Queen to me. The material is all so varied and, well, operatic, it's all just so fun. Also bonus points for Bohemian Rhapsody.
I'm a bit torn on this one. I love Queen, I love their sound and Freddie's voice. Brian May is one of the greatest guitarist's of all time. But honestly, when I listen to Queen it's almost always the greatest hits. A lot of the songs on this album are downright silly. I would like to give it a 3.5 but I can't so I guess I'll have to bump it to a 4 because it's so progressive and well...Bohemian Rhapsody.
If the 90s is Sega Megadrive and the 80s is nuclear weaponry, then the defining toy of the 70s has to be the yo-yo. Or the space hopper. Or the pogo stick. It’s befitting that a decade so enamoured of things that go up and down should gift us – and pretty much bang in the gravitational middle of itself – “A night at the Opera”. Not that the record’s happy with bouncing up and down just the one axis, of course. It’s quiet-loud at whiplash pace; this way and then that with no warning or, often, return; totally genre-bending (and probably genre inventing); genius and gimmickry (or “effectology” according to one contemporaneous NME review). “Death on two legs” starts us on a high with some devilish guitar work and Mercury giving us full bared teeth bastard-snarl, but from there the quality skips a song each time (the exception being “I’m in love with my car” – which is probably also terrible, but I like because it reminds me of Big Business – into the undeniable classic “You’re my best friend”). While loose enough to get along with a song about auto-vehicular romancing, I will likely never be loose enough to enjoy the genuinely anxiety-inducing taxes of “Seaside Rendezvous” or “‘39”, two songs about which I said, quite sincerely, that I’d like to never hear them again. Not to worry, though – as thanks to their pendulous formula you’re only ever a few minutes away from a stone-cold classic. Hearing Mercury wrestle the spotlight away from May on “The Prophet’s Song” or, of course, “Bohemian Rhapsody” is a true musical treat. In those moments of flight they’re an unbeatable force; ecstatic, elemental. So, while patchy, this is still the album with “Bohemian Rhapsody” on it. And while some songs here might be irritating, they’d have to be capable of launching actual napalm into my ears to detract from the good things Queen’s signature song has done for the world. Silliness is temporary, joy is eternal. 3.5.
Great! 4/5
08/02/2025
"I'm in love with my car" is a jam! Never heard that track until today.
Fav: Bohemian Rhapsody Least Fav: Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon Decent album, but Bohemian Rhapsody is a classic for a reason
Pretty decent, other than that one song near the end that kept going on forever 8/10
Not bad, not my style though
Didn't know they all sing on here and they are all great. Not as tacky as I thought it was. I like mix of piano rock bits and early metal inspired bits. I still really dislike the opera section of bohemian rhapsody but the rest is amazing. Favourite songs: death on two legs, you're my best friend, '39, the prophet's song, good company, Bohemian rapsody. Overall around 8/10
Very good but it didn't give me the feeling I need for a 5 star
Would listen again; even a mediocre Queen album gets high marks from me - i could listen to Freddie sing about anything anywhere. Favorites: bohemian rhapsody, death on two legs; you’re my best friend
Better than I thought! Although I still believe it isn't one of the best albums of all time, it is still good. Probably could be a little longer and doesn't help that one song isn't a Queen song in "God Save the Queen". The music is a unique mix of opera, music hall, hard rock, glam and prog, with a little bit of folk too. 4 stars
This was quirky and fun and I absolutely recognized some tracks on here but the rest was pretty obscure. I like a bunch of these even though the lyrics were pretty corny but I think I'll come back to listening to Queen again. 4 star
This album is pretty campy. Lazing On a Sunday Afternoon is like Queen doing one of Paul McCartney's throwback vaudeville songs with over-the-top harmonies and Freddy doing a carnival barker voice (or maybe early radio show voice). And it leads directly into the song that spawned a questionable French movie ~45 years later: I'm In Love With My Car. '39 is a pretty cool, folky tune. Seaside Rendezvous is another tune on here that is quasi ragtime/vaudeville that's been Queened-up. It's pretty damn ridiculous, but I'm a sucker for all the vocal harmonies and all of the harmonized guitar lines. I mean, it's like "Bicyle Race" is a ridiculous and silly and stupid song, but there's so much cool guitar and vocal harmony stuff going on, that it's possible to overlook even the stupid bicycle bell thing before the guitar solo. But I digress. It's not a song I'd listen to often, but really paying attention to what's going on, it's very impressive and cool as hell, but it's all couched in a campy vaudeville/cabaret act. I don't think this is intended as a "concept album", but the collection of songs really runs the gamut of theatricality, and within that context, the few vaudeville/cabaret songs work. Even if all of the songs on here that aren't "Bohemian Rhapsody" absolutely sucked ass (they don't), this album would still get no lower than 3 stars. I can't go 5 stars on it, but as a whole, it's good enough for 4 stars.
The highs are high, the lows are low, the middling is middling. Weird album, but I guess Queen is a weird band. '39 was a nice surprise, didn't know Queen had that in 'em, or maybe I'm just a dupe. Sounds are all over the place, but some of them are all timers and the production is up to the task of keeping up with the band. Problem is, I don't really care for 70s proggy stuff so there we go.
This is such a strange and quirky album, as I guess as a lot of their stuff is. You have all the Queen hallmarks, with the theatrical singing, vocal harmonies and powerful riffs. There's lots of variation and fun to be had. It is maybe a bit TOO quirky at times, but it's made up for with the number of big songs in there. Not least Bohemian Rhapsody, which as we all know, is a MONSTER track.
Fantastic album, what’s there to really say about Freddie’s vocals? The production is unbelievably crisp. There’s such a varied amount of sounds on this, it’s adorable and I mean that as a compliment. It’s fun and playful. What can be said about Bohemian Rhapsody? The Prophet’s Song is the same in size. Special shout out to ‘39 which might have the distinction of being the ONLY good sci-fi song entirely because it isn’t immediately obvious it is one and it discusses an unbelievably complicated topic like time dilation lol. The only bummer is the amount of fluff. It’s pretty much unbelievable highs and really okay lows
It's got Bohemian Rhapsody and my wedding song.
Amazing album. Queen are awesome and Freddie Mercury is a genius and a great vocalist. Favorite tracks: "Death On Two Legs", "Love Of My Life" and of course "Bohemian Rhapsody".
It's batshit, but I love it. Bohemian Rhapsody is obviously iconic, as is You're My Best Friend. I was less familiar with Death On Two Legs, The Prophet's Song and Love Of My Life, all of which I thought were fantastic. I found myself less enthused with tracks like Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon and Seaside Rendezvous, but I suppose they add to the camp charm of Queen. Overall, it's a lot of hits and none of the misses are catastrophic. A very welcome addition to the list.
This was a really solid album. I'd definitely listen to it again. Some really great tunes. Classic Queen.
This really might be Queen’s best work. It’s the moment where they stop sounding like a promising rock band and start sounding like a ridiculous, theatrical monster that can do anything. They just throw every insane idea they have into the studio and shape it into something huge. This thing was one of the most expensive albums ever made at the time. You can absolutely hear why: endless vocal layers, massive harmonies, weird experiments, and production that feels way bigger than the band should reasonably be. It’s obsessive craftsmanship, not just a bunch of songs slapped together. There’s no concept tying it all together, but it plays like a chaotic stage show: heavy rock one minute, operatic drama the next, then suddenly you’re in some music-hall goof or a folk song about space and time travel. Somehow it never collapses. “Death on Two Legs” opens with Freddie absolutely destroying their ex-manager, theatrical, angry, and hilarious at the same time. “’39” is Brian May going full sci-fi folk and “The Prophet’s Song” pushes their vocal stacking and weirdness as far as it can go. And then, obviously, Bohemian Rhapsody, basically a perfect song. Multi-part, no chorus, totally absurd, It shouldn’t have worked. It did. Completely.
Classic album. Love 39, car, and even the overplayed rhapsody. This could be a fun project.
Milestone
Never listend to this album fully until now. Bohemian Rhapsody makes a lot more sense now it has always been a banger but was sort of out of context for me the album fixed that. Awesome album
I'm convinced there's a movie script hidden away somewhere to go along with this album.
"I think we'll go with a little Bohemian Rhapsody, gentlemen?" "Good call!"
You might come for Bohemian Rhapsody, but stay for the rest. '39 was a nice one.
Fun! TIL that "You're My Best Friend" is by Queen and I have no idea how I didn't know that. Silly lyrics, vocal harmonies, wild stylistic swings. Bohemian Rhapsody in its natural context as the second to last track on the album?! Looking forward to more Queen on this list.
Queen is one of those bands where I don't give a shit about their studio stuff, but love all of the Live stuff I've seen/heard. Everything is so big and grandiose, Freddie's vocals sound so perfect it feels fake/manipulated. I don't love the heavy use of effects on the harmonies and they go back to that well a little too often for my liking. Of course, they rock, guitar player shreds, drummer and bass are perfect in the pocket together. It feels like a pre-pop album thinking about the scope and all of the time the mixing and layering had to take. I don't really care for any of the stuff that sounds ragtime-y, but everything else is pretty damn good. I'd call this a solid 4.75
A Night at the Opera is a diverse and unique record with a few huge hits. When I first started collecting vinyl, I found this at Goodwill and bought it for the hits alone. Now those hits are almost tough to listen to since they are so overplayed. However this record doesn’t miss with its deep cuts. Tracks like Death on Two Legs and ‘39 stand out. None of the tracks are bad by any means, but this isn’t my favorite type of music, and with the massive hits on this thing, I’m not sure I will relisten very soon. Queen is a special band, but they’re just not one of my favorites.
Beaucoup de voix en superposition, grande place au chant mais aussi à l'expérimentation musicale avec l'utilisation d'instruments plus symphoniques :)
Queen's A Night at the Opera is a grand musical experiment, with "Bohemian Rhapsody" soaring as the undisputed masterpiece. It casts such a towering shadow that no other track can possibly match its celestial brilliance. Despite the album's undeniable ambition and a few career-defining tracks like "Death on Two Legs" and "Love of My Life," the album often feels more like a collection of wildly different ideas than a cohesive experience. Brilliant moments are scattered across its tracklist, but at times, the album’s unpredictability leads to some quirky detours that disrupt its flow (I'm In Love With My Car, Seaside Rendezvous). Ultimately, while A Night at the Opera is a milestone in rock history, it strengthens my opinion that Queen’s greatest hits—more than any single album—truly capture their magic.
An iconic british album which signifies the genius of the band Queen. Freddie’s vocals are fearless and the iconic queen sound is showcased throughout .
BANGERS: 1) Bohemian Rhapsody 2) You're My Best Friend 3) I'm In Love With My Car 4) Love of My Life 5) The Prophets Song
love this album, love queen, love that it starts with one of my favorite queen songs ever. im in love with my car, though... hmm.
Very theatrical. Dynamic within songs and from song to song.
Very much enjoyed, added to library and I'm in live with my car was added to liked songs- it was just such a different and interesting song model. I think i should start listening to more queen because they really were talented song writers. I give it more of a 3.5 stars because I gave nevermind 4 and it's not quite on that level. It will definitely be listened to again and would be a lovely relaxing album for the journey to school.
Jesus Christ. I don't even know where to start. This is EASILY the best thing I've listened to so far. The only song I'd heard prior to this was Bohemian Rhapsody which wasn't even my favourite track on here. It's just so whimsical, I don't know how to explain it. I'll listen to it lots more over the course of the day but this is a HIGH 4 or or a 5. Just wow.
Natürlich Bohemian Rhapsody! Das ganze Album ist typisch Queen, melodiös und abwechslungsreich.
Pretty great album. Maybe not the car song.
Supposedly this is Queen's best album. Seems like they're excluding Queen's "greatest hits" from that ranking, but OK, I'll allow it ;P I like Queen a lot, obvi. But as is typical, I like the vocals a lot more than the (guitar-heavy!!) instrumentals. 'Death on Two Legs' is very Pink Floydy. Highlights: 'Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon' (Mercury sure likes bikes, doesn't he), 'You're My Best Friend', '39 (love a good shanty), 'Seaside Rendezvous' (love a silly mouth trumpet)
I can sing bohemian rhapsody without needing to look at lyrics. Never dug deep into Queen. Heard the hits and got a little tired of hearing about them the last couple of years because of the movie and suddenly they were everyone’s favorite band. A Night at the Opera is a great album. It’s impressive all around. Not gonna go out and grab the vinyl or anything but I respect that album. There are a lot of great moments on this and it’s unlike anything else. Production is amazing
Fun album! For the most part. Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon is a lot of fun, Love of My Life is great. And yes, I'm in Love With my Car is pretty bad. Oh right, and this album also happens to have a little known song called Bohemian Rhapsody. I don't think that one will ever catch on. All in all, a solid album. A few songs do keep it from the top rating, but it's a definite high 4. Best song: Bohemian Rhapsody
Freakin eh!! 🥳🥳
Good poprock album. My problem with Queen: this is really their most important album (their only one, to be honest). But it stands like a house!
I had heard singles off of this album, Bohemian Rhapsody of course, but not the entire album. I really enjoyed it listen to it twice I'll keep it on the phone for listening while traveling
#432. A classic album, even if it does get a bit weird at points. 4/5: fantastic.
Incredible how sophisticated and yet accessible this is. The harmonies are gorgeous.
Sweet
What a way to start an album. Hearing these songs for the first time back then must have been like a record scratch.
How I so love ‘’39’, Of course alongside the masterpieces and commercial hits* such as ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, and ‘Love of My Life’. I wouldn’t consider this a perfect album, but by golly do I like it
1曲めのサウンドのカッコよさ、歌詞の毒々しさがすごい。「39」とかも好き。
high peaks low lows
Hadn't actually listened to a Queen album before. This shit is good
You can never go wrong with Queen. Love of My Life and Bohemian Rhapsody are my favorites. Freddie is one of a kind
In 90s Britain it was a legal requirement that every home possessed copies of Queen's Greatest Hits I, Queen Greatest Hits II, and Abba Gold. However most of us aren't too familiar with either artist's studio albums. This is a very decent one, with lots of variation and contributions from the whole band. Look forward to hearing some more.
