Not bad but didn't like...

The trouble with singers with such distinctive singing style, is that if you really don't care for that style, it sinks the whole album. And I really don't like the singing here. In fact, I's be happy if I never heard this again. That opening track is like nails on a blackboard. For me, this is pretty much unlistenable caterwauling.

I kind of absolutley hate this. Boring vocals with boring instruments. I dont know there is not a single special thing about this album that does it to me. Every song is so emotional it makes the whole album feel just bland. so ahh and made me want to give up album of the day. BUT I AM BACK AND STONG AGAIN. but this was horrible never wanna hear it again.

Mellow dramatic and fucking BOOORING. Jesus this was honestly the worst thing I could’ve listened to with the day I’ve had. I’m open to different stuff but Jesus Christ if this isn’t music they planned in Von Maur growing up then idk what is. It’s crazy how poorly some of these popular 90’s records age. Especially in this songwriter lane. Almost all of them are just trapped in the 90’s and not even in a cool way. I’m sorry Zachary I know you probably loved this shit.

I just rated Kollaps by Einstürzende Neubauten. The German Industrial music was a challenge, with screwdriver noises and cathartic screaming. The reason I bring that up rather than the Tori Amos album I’m supposed to be reviewing is, someone scored Kollaps with a four, writing that it’s better to be interesting than boring. Even though Kollaps is (I believe) the lowest rated album in this list, I’m going to remember it. I just finished listening to Little Earthquakes and I’ve already forgotten all about it. What I remember most about Amos is that she’s so bad at sight-reading music, she named her first band after her weakness. Instead, she claims she sees music as a ray of light, and she uses the choral combinations which look most pleasing to her. Now, I know it’s a vast world full of Mensa-smart people who can visualize math, etc. But I’m going to call bullshit. You’re good at music without having put in the work to learn sight reading. Just own that without the story crafted to make you seem more special/ supernatural. Nope, I have no time to suffer fools.

I guess it's good that a 90's female artist is on this list, but I'm not sure I'm the demographic. Little Earthquakes evidently issued 5 singles off of it, but I'm I'm not sure I've heard any of them. Or perhaps I have and I just blanked them out in my mind as I've certainly heard of Tori Amos but couldn't identify with any of this. The songs all land in the same vein and feel like they could have been interchangeable with anything else from the album. I'm not sure if Tori Amos is known as a one-trick pony but I got that sense after listening to Little Earthquakes. A lot of the songs were really similar and definitely stayed within a certain lane. I didn't think it was bad, but not something I need more than a song or two. I wasn't outright annoyed by the album but when it ended I was pretty relieved I was done with it. Maybe the early 90's were just starving for some emotional female vocalists in the wake of the 80s. Either way, Little Earthquakes didn't do much for me. 1.45 stars

Unbelievably bad album. If I could rate it 0 stars I would. The entire album sounds like the score to a bad Disney movie. Boring Piano, decent vocals singing absolutely terrible lyrics. Singing things like “I was lost in your dream and now I can’t remember how to dream” it’s just bad. People may listen to this because of feminism but not a lot of people. Tori Amos barely breaks 1 Million listeners on Spotify while her peers like Alanis Morissette, Sheryl Crow, Macy Gray, Sinead O’Conner and Tracy Chapman run absolute circles around her. So it’s not a discussion of “oh you don’t like it because of x, y or z” it’s bad and there are so many female artists that emboldened feminism while releasing some of the most classic songs to come out of the 90s and to add this album in the list of 1001 to listen to before you die is disparaging every other female artist who came before and after who got a spot taken away from them because this is on the list.

I’d heard of Tori Amos but never heard any of her songs, so I was intrigued. Too slow for my taste I fear. Fav song is ‘Tear in Your Hand’.

I accidentally went to a Tori Amos concert once and left rather quickly after it started. This album has reinforced for me that I made a good call there. I know people love this, but it is definitely not my jam.

I have to believe there are 1001, if not 2001, better albums than this one.

I could imagine an alternate reality where my parents get divorced and I get a step-mom that loves this album. And it's one of 3 cds she has in the family van. And we listen to it every day on the way to Catholic school. The "wohooos" on Happy Phantom crossed a strict line in the sand for me. The piano parts on this record are super interesting, I just don't care for her voice at all. It's a style of music I don't like. Fiona Apple is like the apex of this genre, and if I don't like this, it makes sense I wouldn't like this. Tear in Your Hand kind of rips. A lot of the songs made me laugh out loud for some reason. I had this marked as a 2, but the last song was so corny, I had to go back and change it to a 1.

Regardless of the experiences that informed this record, the end result is pure melodrama. The vocal stylings are straight out of an overwrought Broadway musical and the music is bombastic enough to rival a Meat Loaf record. I get that the artist wants to make a point but a little subtlety goes a long way.

I just found this album boring really. I wanted to like it but couldn't.

Very underwhelming singer-songwriter album that tried to be too epic at times. Was just hoping for a random 90s single that I had completely forgotten about to come up. That second to last song where it was just her singing made me want to throw my headphones. Waste of an hour when it was new music Friday for other albums that I need to listen to today. #nomore90ssingersongwritersplz

I still don’t understand why this type of literal, paragraph-format word soup is considered good song writing. Obviously she’s an icon, but I just don’t get it personally. I gave it a good try though.

I haven't heard this album. After listening, I've heard Winter and Silent all these years. This sounds like a musical theater. I could never enjoy this. It's for someone else. The affect vocals, the strings. Me and my gun is quite powerful. Tori seems cool in interviews.

Definitely boring— actually bad instrumentation mixed with trite lyrics. The first couple of songs with lines like “crucify myself” are the hackneyed commentary of 90s alternative. The later songs on the record are, like Bryan said, Disney songs without the fun. The best song is White Horses and it sounds like a Joni Mitchell song (but I don’t even really like Joni Mitchell)

I can tell she was giving it her all and I respect her for that but it just didn’t really hit for me

Couldn’t really settle in to this. Just as soon as I started to enjoy an aspect of it, she started up with some weird vocal exercises. Not for me chief.

I got about 4 or 5 songs into this and bailed. If this is one of the 1001 albums I need to hear, I have clearly been doing music all wrong. Bland, unexciting songs, played and recorded in a very obvious way.

If you own a Tori Amos album then you are also statistically likely to own a Queen album.

This was the second time I've heard this album. The first was about 1 1/2 years ago when someone recommended it to me. I didn't like it then. I called it "sad girl with piano" music, a genre I'm not at all into. Listening to it again, the first track (or two?) aren't that bad I guess, but then it just all starts to sound the same. I don't want to listen to this for an hour. She has a fine voice, but for me it's wasted here. Women do seem to love it though, so that's good for them, but I have to give it an honest rating for myself.

So..... Tori Amos is literally just a Kate Bush impersonator. It's quite shocking. Except her USP is ripping off the worst songs from Bush's back catalogue. Amos is the living embodiment of the "We have that at home" meme: -------------------- Kid: "Mom, can I have some Kate Bush please?" Mom: "No. We have Kate Bush at home." *** Mom reveals that what she meant by "Kate Bush at home" is Tori Amos' "Little Earthquakes". It's boring to me, but "in your eyes I saw a future together, but you just look away in the distance" stole my heart somehow.

This sounds like somebody listened to the soundtrack of Reba and decided to make an album mimicking that. This album is the worst parts of 70’s and 90’s music combined. Listening to this is time I will never get back, my disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined.

I am going to be called out sexist or worse but this is the blueprint of girly indie with a trembling but strong voice and cringy display of all sorts of musical aesthetics I really will never tune in liberately. When J. Newsom adds a certain quirkyness I can just hear Amos’ mediocre songs that I cannot relate on any emotional Celine Dionish level. Awful!

My god this is boring

Not a fan of piano echoing vocal pattern style melodies and this is full of them. Feels like she's trying to be Kate Bush minus the interesting lyrics and arrangements. Found absolutely no surprises on this album, sounded exactly how I remember it 25 years ago and it's still tedious to me. Sure it probably gets better with more listens, but doesn't appeal to me at all to want to listen to again.

Not gonna lie…I struggled to get through this. I’d never listened to Tori Amos before but with any luck, I won’t have to again.

I know Tori Amos is beloved by many, so I won't be too brutal. Basically, Tori Amos makes music that I don't like. I came to this conclusion after being surrounded by this album ad nauseam beginning 1993 and stretching through 1995 and again today. To each, their own. This is not for me.

i know the name because of the massive dance track that sampled one of her tracks so i kind of assumed she might be alright. well armand van helden has gone massively up in my estimations to have made such a tune from meagre pickings. this album is shite. it's like a 90s kate bush, and that's not a compliment.

I could see how the sort of people who like this music could like this but I would not trust anyone's music taste who likes this music. 'silent all these years' - and indeed the entire album - sounds like the Frozen soundtrack. After looking at the other reviews it seems that the main factor for people liking this is nostalgia, which is fair considering ill listen to 'I'll Get You What You Want (Cockatoo in Malibu)' off the Muppets Most Wanted soundtrack for the nostalgia of it.
