LOVED this! wasn't on spotify so had to youtube it and am so glad i did. unreal funk beats, so smooth, so clean, so joyous. just had so much fun with this. title track especially is an incredible ear worm, doesn't feel like seven and a half minutes at all. need this on spotify !!!

Music to get your shit together by. Makes painfully clear how trite most of what we listen to really is.

Best Song: Maggot Brain. I don't know if the Maggot Brain album appears on this list, but if it does that'll be the best track on that album too. I don't think I've heard anything that instrumentally strikes such a deep cord with me as this track. Worst Song: Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad. It's funky as hell, but the people all speaking in unison just doesn't work for me. It's like they're not unified enough. Overall: I mean the whole thing if fucking bananas. It's weird and all over the place, while also being fun and musically tight. What happens when you combine the perfect amount of talent with the perfect amount of drugs.

Classic

I really enjoyed this album and the genre isn't one I usually love so even though my enjoyment of it was probably only a 4/5, I will give it a 5 given that it had to work against my own taste.

Heard Funkadelic before, obviously, but not this record. Pretty much every track is amazing. The only one I found a bit lyrically grating was Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers), but still funky AF. Favourite tracks: One Nation Under a Groove, Groovallegiance, Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!, Cholly (Funk Getting Ready To Roll!) - the damn riff in the outro is FIRE

Je l'écoute en terminant les corrections du chapitre 1 :D

Now this is what I'm talking about. I met George Clinton working security at the One World fest in 96. It was the P funk all stars with Fishbone and I think James Brown headlined with Bootsy Collins. This is the fest where I didn't recognize De La Soul and made them take the long way To The Stage cause they didn't have the right passes. I'm an idiot, they were great. Any who this album was fun.

Funk Daddy Pussy. So good.

super enjoyable, and one of the greatest discoveries of 1001 albums for me - who knew i liked funk so much? i wish it was on spotify so i could listen more often!

what a great funk album, damn. the grooves and musicians are all locked in and sound amazing. i wish this album were on spotify so i could hear it more but at least they have maggot brain. favorites: groovallegiance, into you, maggot brain/chant, lunchmeataphobia

NASTY and gorgeous.

The funk gods have blessed me on this day... I really thought I hated funk, turns out I just hate when Prince does it. This album was an amazing experience, it felt just like that moment when you're eating your favorite chocolate and savoring the taste.

Love George and the gang! Fun album

Released in 1978, Funkadelic's "One Nation Under A Groove" stands as a landmark in funk music, achieving both critical acclaim and commercial success. This review delves into the album's lyrical content, musical tapestry, production value, thematic exploration, and lasting influence, while also addressing its strengths and weaknesses. Lyrics: The album's lyrics are a playful blend of social commentary and pure fun. Tracks like the title track and "Groovallegiance" promote unity and liberation through the unifying power of funk. Songs like "Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!" challenge musical boundaries with playful defiance. However, beneath the infectious grooves, deeper social messages emerge. "Can't Judge a Book by Looking at the Cover (Slipe Away)" critiques societal prejudices, while "Lunchmeataphobia" explores anxieties and societal pressures. The lyrics are rarely overt, relying on double entendre and metaphor, adding complexity and leaving room for personal interpretation. Music: Musically, "One Nation Under A Groove" is a vibrant tapestry of influences. It merges the infectious rhythms of funk with the raw energy of rock and psychedelic elements. Guitar riffs, courtesy of Bernie Worrell and Eddie Hazel, are a constant force, ranging from soulful melodies to scorching solos inspired by Jimi Hendrix. The rhythm section, anchored by bassist Bootsy Collins and drummer Jerome Brailey, pulsates with energy. Keyboards by the newly-joined Walter "Junie" Morrison add layers of texture and ethereal soundscapes. The album's musical strength lies in its seamless blending of genres, creating a unique sound that is both danceable and intellectually stimulating. Production: Produced by George Clinton and Eddie Hazel, the album displays a clear vision with a raw and funky aesthetic. The sound is thick and layered, with each instrument occupying its own space while contributing to the overall groove. However, the production occasionally lacks the polish of more commercially-focused tracks, which some listeners may find rough around the edges. Themes: Unity, liberation, and musical evolution are the central themes woven throughout the album. The title track proposes a "nation" united by the groove, transcending societal divisions and fostering joy. This message of inclusivity extends to musical boundaries, as songs like "Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!" challenge genre limitations. Furthermore, the album explores themes of self-discovery and empowerment. "Can't Judge a Book by Looking at the Cover (Slipe Away)" encourages listeners to embrace individuality, while "Electric Miles" celebrates the transformative power of music. These themes resonate with listeners seeking inspiration and a sense of belonging. Influence: "One Nation Under A Groove" exerted a significant influence on music across various genres. It helped solidify funk's presence in the mainstream and paved the way for artists like Prince and Red Hot Chili Peppers who blurred the lines between funk and rock. The album's experimentation with psychedelic and rock elements also inspired future generations of musicians exploring genre-bending soundscapes. Pros and Cons: Pros: Innovative and genre-bending sound Infectious rhythms and catchy melodies Lyrical messages that are both playful and thought-provoking Enduring influence on popular music Cons: Production may sound rough to some listeners Lyrics can be cryptic and open to interpretation Some songs may lack the immediate accessibility of mainstream pop music Conclusion: "One Nation Under A Groove" is not just a funk masterpiece, but a testament to the power of music to transcend boundaries and inspire unity. While it may have minor production limitations and cryptic lyrics, the album's musical innovation, thematic depth, and lasting influence solidify its place as a landmark in music history. It continues to resonate with listeners seeking an uplifting and thought-provoking sonic experience.

Outstanding album! funk, psychodelia, R&B/jazz. Instrumentals are outstanding. Bit of trouble founding online version to listen but was worth the trouble.

That was a treat! Stays on the phone until the next purge.

LOVE ITTTTT LOVE FUNKADELIC AND THIS ALBUM IS ONE OF MY FAVS

Great grooves. This holds up.

A funk classic.

Flawless. 5

Breaking news: Funkadelic is a band you should listen to. I don't know what else to say about this band, or this record in particular. It's a perfect jam record. You don't get funkier or trippier than this.

The only flag I pledge allegiance to belongs to the United Funk of Funkadelica.

Really really enjoyed this album. It's got a lot of the funk you would expect from George Clinton, but there's also a ton of Hendrix-inspired psychedelic rock and even prog rock too ("Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!"—not I!). A lot of the songs are really long, but they kept my interest. You could also just vibe out to it as background music if you wanted. "Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)" is batshit crazy, in the best way possible. Ridiculous but kind of poignant at the same time. The guitar shredding on the last (live) song is something Hendrix and Prince would be proud of. "I love jazz, I love rock, anything with a swing"—this line from "Cholly (Funk Getting Ready To Roll)" sums up the album pretty well. 5/5

Incredible musicianship

Great P-funk album. A good mixture of rock and funk. Not Maggot Brain level but still cool.

I like it. Mood boosting, energizing

Could only listen to the first song of the album(The rest were unavailable). But that one song was enough for me to listen to a majority of their discography.

A funky journey.

If you asked me if I like funk as a genre, I would probably say yes, but in reality I'm not sure whether I like it or more the idea of it. In practice, for my tastes it either seems to be too repetitive or indulges too much in goofiness that takes away from the musical experience. Not so with Nation Under a Groove. The creativity and musicianship here are superfluous. There are a few spots where it threatens to float away into '70's vocal band' territory, but Bootsy and Stingray are ultimately able to keep it grounded (we definitely need more bass singers in popular music). Each track has its own vibe and personality while remaining a cohesive collective, and the exact same can be said for the players; one nation under a groove indeed. This is exactly what it says on the tin, and everything you'd want in a funk album.

This record is so much fun. Had to listen on YouTube, it’s not on the streaming services which is a bummer.

If you’ve heard any Funkadelic or were a fan of g-funk rap from the early 90’s, you’ll definitely hear some musical motifs that are instantly recognizable. One Nation Under a Groove exemplifies how Funkadelic never let themselves get boxed in with pure funk. Groovallegiance brings in some great latin jazz feeling, and while Bootsy Collins might be the best known Funkadelic bassist, Rodney “Skeet” Curtis’ bass grooves have a chance to really shine here. Who Says a Funk Band Can’t Play Rock Music?! would be the 2nd entry in the book on how to understand Funkadelic, right behind any of their myriad tracks about grooving. They want to incorporate the sounds that make sense to them, and even the ones that don’t make sense at times. Predefined genres be damned - Funkadelic will stretch those expectations and pull it together in a nice melting pot that's funky as all hell. I would argue that this album leans in more to their rock sound than other albums. The funk is absolutely still there, but this record is definitely a rocker. Highly recommended; the same that I would say for almost all of their catalog.

If you've got an arse, this is going to set it in motion.

There is not enough good funk in the world. Rounding up because this album should be available to hear in more places than just YouTube.

Amo el funk desde ahora

Can’t believe I had never listened to the full album.

Incredible. Parliament, and this album in particular, unlocked so much new music for me.

Man...this album slaps like nothing else. Heavy, heavy grooves throughout, and I absolutely cannot get enough of it. This is a lovely gift for my 30th from the generator, and now I'll be hunting for this vinyl. Favorite track: Maggot Brain (live) (including bonus tracks), Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?

Such a great album! A few weird songs, but overall, real energetic and lively.

The musicianship on this is excellent. Fantastic bass playing. I greatly enjoyed this album. The Parliament album we got recently was pretty good, but this was a notch above it.

Fresh take of combined genres.

Incredible, infectious funk that influenced countless musicians, perhaps most notably Prince.

Could not listen to it. Did not have access on Spotify.

Funkadelic is an instant 5* band.

Killer record from prime Funkadelic. Heavy rock/funk fusion. Moving live version of Maggot Brain.

What a funky fresh album! From front to back, this album is moving and grooving. It is a terrible shame this is not available on Spotify in this country. I had to listen to it on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmDNMx9FRgI. Apparently "One Nation Under A Groove" was a funk anthem and understandably so. The song "Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)" is hilariously out there.

Delicious and delightful

R&B fulfilling its promise as some outer-space, face-melting sheeeet. 5-2-4

Black Zappa or maybe Frank is White Funkadelic don’t know for sure. Sounds like master class musicians jamming out and having a good time. Of course it’s funky but they mix in a lot of other genres and most songs are pretty guitar driven and the guitar player rips. I love the wacky humor and over the top imagery and antics.

George Clinton can’t go wrong

love me some soul music now

Funk is something I’ve never gone out of my way to listen to before but there’s nothing bad I could really say about this album. It was just really fun to listen to, put me in a great mood. Maggot Brain is such a beautiful song.

Everything George Clinton and bootsy touch is 5 stars

Had to find a rip of the album on Youtube. Pretty decent once i found it and fun overall.

starting off with probably the happiest, possibly SILLIEST funk album ever produced. the sort of collection where you can vividly imagine the group smiling and enjoying every last groove being dropped. bootsy took me on a trip straight to funkytown and i'm still high from the glitz and glamor. i listened to this shit normally, imagine listening to this shit when you're high. put on your seatbelts, it's gonna be a bumpy, exciting ride. there's a track in here called "promentalshitbackwashpsychosis enema squad (the doo doo chasers)". they don't give a damn and i am here for every last second.

Stellar funk album. It's a crime there's not more documentation on it in Wikipedia or the ability to play the whole album on Spotify. I'll probably look for this one on Vinyl I guess. 4.5/5

funky as fuck

Stone cold funk classic. Califunkagroovalicious.

Loved it

Not sure why this isn't on Spotify. Absolutely bangin. G Clinton makes some wild fuckin music

Yooooo, Maggot Brain 12/10.

Is P-Funk my favorite band?

*Listening Note* Not available on spotify but available on youtube. Absolute guitar gods

"Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)" is more prescient now than it has ever been. Funkadelic can always be relied on to open your mind just a little more. Music to get your shit together by. The prune juice of the mind.

wow ok grant me citizenship in this nation

Wow that was really fun. Almost as good as “magot brain”. Will keep this one in rotation

huge parliament / funkadelic fan. the weirder the better!!!

Will not be at all bothered if every other Parliament or Funkadelic album is in this list.

Genius. Love.

Very cool, sounds like it influenced a lot that came after. Didn’t actually get the album itself but rather individual songs

Album banger avec presque que des bangers trop dommage que pe squad soit pas sur Spotify

Earworm

Rock funk fusion at its finest.

One Nation under a groove has been awesome and I love it, the first track is incredible and got me grooving.

so funky!

Damn I wish I could live in the United Funk of Funkadelica. I would definitely pledge groovallegiance. I am weak for that guitar solo at the end of the final song.

Surprised I liked the slowest song ("Into You") the most here but pretty much everything is excellent. Lyrics to "P.E. Squad" are kinda funny sober but the overlapping vocals and lyrical focus would definitely turn a trip sour for me.

Sly and hendrix came from this.so funky fresh, bit of prog rock too

Fantastic from start to finish

This albums incredible especially when it isn’t being interrupted with betting ads and Home Depot commercials. Those Doo Doo chasers really know how to make a beautiful song and that live version of maggot brain was the best I’ve heard absolutely incredible. Also being coked out in a club in the 70s listening to who says a funk band can’t play rock is now on my time travelling bucket list Eddie tore that up too. This album was fucking way better than dirt I wanna go back and rank dirt lower cause of how much I loved this. Front to back it was beautiful the guitar the bass the keys the vocals literally all great maybe the first couple songs went on a little too long but again if I was coked out in the 70s listening to this I’d think those songs weren’t long enough. I need to get this on vinyl 10/10. And We need to start calling ourselves the Doo Doo Chasers -B Funk

not my style, but well done

It's not music I would've listened to before, but definitely will from now on.

This one knocked me on my ass. Wow. What a record.

Maggot Brain puts this completely over the top for me.

Good tunes!

Peak pfunk. Love the opener

Well that sucks! This album is not on Spotify. But I fucking love Maggot Brain by these guys. I'll have to look it up on YouTube. It is on there. I like the name of some of these songs. Groovallegiance, Promentalshitbackwashpychosis, ooooooh and Maggot brain is on this album too. lol Lunchmeataphobia. 5 stars. Pretty unique band!

This was excellent, excellent, excellent

Not available on streaming. Classic George Clinton with some nice guitar at the end

Really fun. Some great guitar.

First listen George Clinton is a motherfunkin’ genius! Favourite tracks: One Nation…, Who Says A Funk Band…, Promental…, Maggot Brain

Sprawling, bizarre-o and a total mess. Also, completely delightful and a total ton of fun. Also also, a masterpiece on its own terms, as all masterpieces must be.

All hail the P-FunK! Who says a funk band can't play rock? Every time a P-Funk album comes up on this list, it's like a massive breath of fresh air. I reviewed Maggot Brain a while back, and it is a masterpiece, but much darker than this. This album is so great; fun and funny and slinky and funky and rockin' and wild and super catchy. The title track is a mission statement of the all-inclusive Funkadelic party, and we are all welcome. I have listened to this album three times through today, and it gets better every time. There is something new to hear every playing. I love Eddie Hazel, but Mike Hampton and Gary Shider are tearing it up in his absence. Interestingly, the bonus tracks on the version I listened to included a 1978 live recording of the Maggot Brain track, which is as majestic as the album version, but a bit more celebratory and less foreboding. Funkadelic are at the height of their powers here, but in a more positive space than at the beginning of the decade. I love this record and could easily listen to it every day. Five stars.

‘One Nation’ is the best and most accessible of the Funkadelic albums for the average punter, but still retains the weirdness and psychedelic elements that made them unique and awesome. Highlights include the title track, the reggae tinged ‘Groovallegiance’, the live version of ‘Maggot Brain’ on the bonus 7” that came with original album, the straight up rock/funk of ‘Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!’ and the whacked out weirdness of Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers). But really, every track is good here. It’s all killer, no filler.

Unfortunately only two songs are available for me, but I found it on YouTube. Love Funkadelic and this album is no exception!

Fonky!

yeah i mean this is exactly what it is meant to be

I tried to listen to this album but couldn’t find it on Spotify or Apple Music and my work stereo system doesn’t connect to YouTube…So instead I'm listening to a different album By the same artist, because it's Funkadelic and I just last year discovered that I like funk. Especially of the George Clinton variety. So I listened to Funkadelic’s Finest and it did not disappoint, I assume this album would have been great too, because George Clinton and Bootsy Collins make a great funking team.

No one can stop us now.

"One Nation Under a Groove" is the 10th studio album by American funk band Funkadelic. The album was recorded in the studio in Detroit and also has one live song. The genres listed are funk, rock, R&B and black album with critics also citing influences of progressive rock, progressive soul, Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone. I agree with all of it; it definitely has the funk going but there is a lot of other musical styles that you hear. This is a large band named the Funkadelic Main Invasion Source in the liner notes with each band area given its own name. For instance. The bassists are named the Bass Thumpasaurians. Oh, the fun they must have had. This album was Funkadelic's most commercially successful album reaching #1 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Hop Albums and is also criticality regarded as their best. Their biggest hit "One Nation Under a Groove" opens things up with hand clapping, 70's dance guitar and a funky bass. Multplie backing vocals reminding me of Talking Heads "Remain in Light." There's also a recurring James Brown-esque vocal. Needless to say, the funk is going on. "Groovallegiance" is a little slower with the rhthym. The backing vocals again shine. There's a killer guitar and organ jam towards the end. "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock" has some absolutely great guitar shredding. "Promentalshitbackwashpyschosis Enema Squad" is dreamy and stretches things out to 11 minutes. You know the recording was let's just say vibrant and enhanced as the line "Fried ice cream is a reality" is repeated several times. "Into You" adds more soul and I see the Sly reference. Raymond (Stingray) Davis steals the song with his bass vocals. "Cholly" ends the second side with its funkiest song. More guitar groove. There is a lot of musical styles going on but the funk is constant which holds this album together. This is a more cohesive album than the previous Funkadelic albums I've heard which are also very good. This is a great time and album and worth a listen if just for their big single.

Finally, a 5 star album, it's been a while. Every track, 5 stars. Plus a bit of Maggot Brain as a bonus track. Spotify don't have this album in 2023 for some reason, they lose a rating star as long as this continues to be the case.

This is funking phenomenal.

Sucks how the album isn't on Spotify! No skips, truly

Really enjoyed this.

One, two, three, four, five People think cause we are here Our jazz ran out the ships won't steer No more. We picked up on the rhythm here If you just take a toot and have a beer We're gonna make it clear Yes, and when the morning gets here Jazz and soul Great funk album. This was a weird time in America's history, and this album does give you some insight into how some people were dealing with it. 5/5

So I'm quite familiar with Funkadelic/Parliament; however, I had never sat down and listened to this album in full. This is some real foundational rock meets funk meets R&B just meets out there kind of stuff. Not having this on streaming sucks as I had to listen to it on youtube. There's real genius hear and I'd love to hear this not on a shitty youtube feed. But even then its genius shines through.

Fuzzy, psychedelic, funk rock. Pretty damn perfect.

This is some of the thickest, stickiest funk ever made. George, Bootsy, and the boys sure know how to get down. There're no negatives here. It's absolutely funktastic from needle drop to full stop.

Awesome will listen to more Funkadelica. The guitar work is stellar.

Man, this was a true eye opener. Loved it on even first ever listen. Going to hit the 5 stars

It's not a perfect heuristic, plenty of exceptions etc, but I'm finding something that separates a lot of good 80s pop music from bad is that the good acts really, *really* took a lot of influence from funk. This is great stuff!

Funking solid!

Absolutely brilliant - maybe falls just short of Maggot Brain, but still a very high 5! Probably my favourite band I have discovered through this project - hope to hear much more from them.

discaralhaço

Amazing album, free your mind

Groovallegiance has the funkiest bass..... then along comes that lead break! The funk band CAN play rock. That is the most driving bit of rock I've heard in ages. Doo Doo chasers had many funny bits, but I'm hearing a falsetto backed by shredded guitar. Remember that a purple clad genius from Minnesota was recording when this came out. This album has so many layers. To think I knew nothing about GC when this came out. So many wasted years.

cant listen on Spotify which is really annoying because its one of my favourite albums of all time. I would sell my soul to funkadelic

It's rare to have a funk album that you can just put on in the background and enjoy. This was one that you could enjoy if you pay attention or if you just want something to listen to while you're doing other things.

What an album, I thought it was gripping the whole time. Each of the jams is really tight despite the repetition and the adventurousness. I was charmed by "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!" - they're saying so explicitly, we're playing dance, funk, and rock music all at the same time, what are you going to do about it?? And they're doing it so well there's no way to argue with them. A great album by a great band.

I love the spirit of Funkadelic. Some of the most unfiltered musical expression you'll ever hear.

Title track, Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!, Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers), Cholly (Funk Getting Ready To Roll!) are all standouts. Lunchmeataphobia (Think! It Ain't Illegal Yet!) grabs you from the beginning as the heavy guitar riff that opens it stands out immediately. P.E. Squad/Doo Doo Chasers is a good closer - still funky but slower in tempo allowing for a cooldown. Great album start to finish - expectedly funky, unexpectedly funny. Funkadelic was the more experimental half of the P-Funk banner, and a lot of psych-rock influences are apparent. Why isn't this on any streaming service?

Very fun upbeat album, every artist on it does a phenomenal job

Couldn't find actual album but listened to some similar songs which were good

i love funk

Because this album is one of a kind, weird and eccentric like nothing you've ever heard, because it has positive energy, because there are so many talented people contributing in so many different ways, because it makes me wanna get up and dance! and because I remember it fondly from my youth, I'm gonna give it a rare 5! So fun to dance and sing along to.

There's a track on this one called The Doo Doo Chasers so what else do you want to know

Un disco importantissimo, che frulla insieme funk, soul, rock e disco music. Consiglio anche Maggior Brain, sempre loro.

Funking brilliant

Awesome groovy/funky album! Love the vibe, the sound and the lyrics. I'll remember this one for sure!

Never fails to deliver!!!

This isn't just one of the great funk albums ever but it is also one of the greatest GUITAR albums of all time. The playing is absolutely sublime as well as tasteful. What an album. I can't understand why it is so difficult to find on streaming services. 5 stars

Great background music

This is a blast. I've always favored Parliament, but Funkadelic is no slouch. It's a gem. The only flaw is that it isn't on Spotify. Good thing I happen to own it. Classic album. I don't know how anyone wouldn't like it. Seriously.

So wide you can't get around it So low you can't get under it So high you can't get over it

Some of the best guitar playing I’ve ever heard. Great vocals and harmonies. Blown away by this album. So full of energy. Standouts: One Nation Under A Groove, Grooveallegiance, Who Says a Funk…, Promental…, p.e. squad, maggot brain

I don't even need to listen to this again to tell you that it's great. I mean, I will listen to it again. But that's mainly because it's great, not because it's on the list.

Always funky, always groovy.

Love funkadelic. For some reason, not on amazon music

Really loved this album, and need to dive more into Funkadelic and their later collaborations.

All time fave.

A classic start to finish.

Pretty great live/studio funk record that I had to go to YouTube to hear. It’s a shame, as this album has an entire collection of funky sounds, grooves and riffs to last the entire hour run-time. Great instrumentation, as to be expected from Funkadelic. Standout is the penultimate track, with its extended guitar solo, and mournful sound that perfectly encapsulates the negative feelings described throughout in the lyrics.

Classic funk album, classic

Buenísimos !!! Ya los conocía pero escucharlos detenidamente me ha encantado.

I will be happy to jump on the funkalicious Funkadelic bus just for the funk of it anytime!!! YES!

Bummer that this isn’t available on Apple Music because I really love this album! I listened to it on YouTube though and it is as funky as one would hope. I love the title track (and have for decades), but there were a lot of other great songs on here. I love getting my day funked up like this!

Great album of course, Who says a funk band and the title song are two of the best Funkadelic songs ever. must have been great to go to a Funkadelic concert in the seventies..

Funky and sexy

6 estrelas foda se

melhor do funkadelic junto com maggot brain

Track 3 Side 1 Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!

Can hear the influence on early Red Hot Chilli Peppers and a ton of Prince . More funky than Psychedelic , but definitely unique . Funkadelic stand in a league of their own stylistically ; moreover , the musicianship is next to none . Some solid bass playing and jam out sessions by all.

Funking Brilliant!

I am certainly grooving

A little hard to find at first but the songs were amazing.

The funk will never die

Excellence

This album is like balm for the soul. The funk rock is just what I needed on this Friday.

Do you pled allegiance to the funk, the whole funk and nothing but the funk? Album incredibil de funky si amuzant dar si foarte simbolic

Not my bag

One of my all time favorite albums...each song a banger.

Absolutely brilliant. You can feel the influence dripping off every note in this album and it doesn't take much to trace that influence directly or indirectly to every other album by any other group since. The power of not giving a fuck what's expected.

One word, Funky.

Great, I just wish this was on Spotify so I could listen to it regularly. 9/10

Zoals ze zelf zingen kan een funkband ook rock-muziek spelen. Heel tof album

Practically flawless funk album. Only previously heard Maggot Brain, so this felt much more traditional. All the tracks are flawless. Didn't even notice how long they were until I needed to use the bathroom but decided not until the song was over. Rock comes in the later tracks. I was a little nervous because Eddie Hazel wasn't in this album, but no, this guitarist is insane. Works really well creating the funk rhythm. Vocals are superb. It's a whole crowd having fun, full of humor and energy. All the vocals, rhythm, and instruments work in harmony together. Everyone works together to create what I consider to be the pinnacle of funk. Gets milder in the last two tracks but still great tracks. Favorite tracks: "One Nation Under a Groove", "Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad"

Great album. Great musicianship. Love it. Where has this been all my life?

not currently available on spotify

Man this just cooks. How dies Prince become Prince without George Clintin leading the way. Also some of the best guitar work ever committed to vinyl. This live versiom of Maggot Brain left me breathless. A 5-star album

Great album. Killer guitar solos. Shame it’s not on Spotify

Groovy dude.

Wooooow. I wish this one was on Spotify. Never listened to these before but absolutely crushing it

FRIED ICE-CREAM IS A REALITY Made back when they knew how to name music the right way. I mean cmon "promentalshitbackwashpsychosis"??? Nobody will ever be this cool again

No lo encontré en Spotify (?), espero que lo que escuché en yt haya sido el bueno. De cualquier forma me gustó un montón, tiene una vibra muy animada (a ratos como para estar pachecx), buen ritmo y mezclas interesantes.

I haven't listened to this before, and didn't expect to like it, but it's fantastic.

Me encanta el funky y no conocía a este grupo

Great! Get it Spotify!

no había escuchado este disco, me doy asco. perdón. maravilla.

Most tracks were unavailable, but the ones that were not were good. This is completely out of left field for me, but based on a few other albums I am forced to believe that this is actually great? The album cover is either worth a 1 or a 5 and I cannot decide which.

Super beast guitar solo awesoomeness

#179/1001 🇺🇸 Funkin' Marvelous. Best Tracks: One Nation Under A Groove, Cholly, Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock.

Great funkin’ record! Surprised to see the live version of Maggot Brain recorded in my home town at a location I’ve been to many times. 4.0/5.0

This was definitely a fun album. I hadn’t listened to Funkadelic until now, but I have to say I really enjoyed the psychedelic elements and the way the synths add to the overall feel of the music.

One nation indeed

Along with James Brown and Sly Stone, George Clinton is one of the founding fathers of funk (which, let’s face it would make an excellent band name). During the late sixties and seventies he was the driving force behind two seminal bands, Parliament and Funkadelic, together known as the P-Funk collective. For this album, Funkadelic play with genre much as a cat plays with a mouse. They combine funk, rock, prog, soul and even a bit of disco into a hugely influential album. You can definitely hear the genesis of Prince’s sound here where rock guitars, keyboards and sexy vocals are seamlessly melded in a funk-tastic whole. It’s a bit scatological in places (and when I say a bit, I mean a lot) which can get a bit tiresome, but I’ll give them a pass on that. The highlights on this release are the title track and an amazing live medley, which showcases what a phenomenally talented group of musicians they were. Who says a funk band can’t play rock?!

Such a cool album, a great blend of funk and rock. Found myself tapping along throughout, a really enjoyable listen. Some brilliant guitar work and a real shame it's not on Spotify. 3.5/5

Hell yeah. How have I never listened to any P-Funk??

It's funking incredible

Just checked and our last funkadelic album was 910 albums ago! I'm not sure I appreciated the previous album was from the early 70s at the time. Anyway, this was so funky, big old ball of funk. I don't think the whole album is of the same quality, but when it's good, it's really good. Recognised a lot of bits that have been sampled too. Not as good as maggot brain I don't think, but still really enjoyed it. 3.5

I like Maggot Brain, but haven't listened to "One Nation Under a Groove" before. Based on one listen, this seems like a really strong album.

Funkyyyyyyy

Such a funky album which makes sense considering it's by THE Funkadelic. So groovy to listen to and filled with such intracasies, a real vibe overall. Fav Songs One Nation Under A Groove Promentals**tbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doodoo Chasers) Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock Is it Top 1001 Worthy (is it essential)? Yes, absolutely, some premium funk right here. A great listen all-round.

Faut que je me rappelle de noter mes commentaires après avoir écouté 😅 dans mes souvenirs c'était cool!

I don't think this group knows how to make bad music. Every record, every track, so groovy and of course...funky. It's just sultry, swinging, wavy, and just so cool. Everything about this gang makes me even further appreciate funk and soul. Great record.

George Clinton is such a legend man. Funk music is awesomesauce

I need to find this on vinyl. I am fortunate enough to have purchased it on compact disc some time in the early 90s. Had to relisten on YouTube (WTF Apple Music???). Of all the albums to miss from the P-Funk discography! Only Maggot Brain was more influential. 4.25 stars (Seriously needs to be on more streaming services)

I've never been a big fan or connoiseur of funk music. So, even if I understand this is pretty good and musicians are very good, I was not terribly excited about it. In any case, the album is indeed very good (and, interestingly, not as "disco-funk" as I thought). I really enjoyed some of the songs, which, all things being said, tend to be too long. In particular, I enjoyed the end section of "Groovallegiance" (nice guitars), "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?", or "Promentals..." (too long though). Interestingly, I enjoyed all three songs in the EP more than I did with any of the songs of the main album. So, I really liked "Lunchmeataphobia", "P.E. Squad...", and "Maggot Brain" (my favourite track in the whole "album"). It's in the range of 3 (without the EP) or 4 stars (if the EP is included) for me.

Cool album

very funkeyy

Kurde I liked it really but aside from that title song the rest would be really nice ambient music

Suuperrr groovy and funky all the way through

Le titre éponyme est trop trop bien, le reste est sympa aussi !

1 star for being the most obnoxious album to find since it’s not on streaming services for some reason Funk is just a cool genre, love a good bass line so it’s nice when the entire genre is just crafting awesome bass lines and having them as the emphasis of each song. I think each song’s the perfect length, much longer than a normal song but right when you think you might get sick of the track it wraps up. Vocals are pretty nice, and there’s some really unexpectedly great guitar solos in there I feel like this is one that’s desperately in need of a remaster or at the very least in need of putting on modern streaming services, since the old YouTube videos I ended up listening to did not have the best quality. I don’t think I’m quite capable of giving this one an honest rating on that front for now, so I’ll try to rate directly off the quality of the music itself. Did not care for Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis (also wow these song names are crazy), thought it was too unfocused and didn’t really feel like it belonged I will definitely have to give this one another listen in higher quality one of these days, but I really did enjoy this one. Looking back on my recent ratings 1001’s been on a roll lately so it’s nice to see it continue

nice album coquette...

niceeee

This was very fun and groovy! This is my first full album exposure to Funkadelic/Parliament cause i still haven’t listened to Maggot Brain, i’m very pleased with this. Standouts are the Title Track, the 4th track (not typing all that) and the Maggot Brain Medley (ik hearing this before the main album is probably a sin).

Who says a funk ban can't play rock music.

Not available on streaming made it tricky to listen to with youtube ads all throughout. Throws you right in on the intro track and doesn't stop the whole time. Basically 50 minutes of groovy funk. Kept my head bobbing the whole time. Review: 7.6/10 Fave line: "Chinese Laxatives - Sweet and Sour Bowel Movements"

Funk's a favourite so I'm inclined to score this highly.

Nice album. Good grooves

May 28th, 2026 Not on Spotify Standouts: one nation under a groove, doo doo chasers, into you

I wish this album was easier to find but it’s not on any streaming service. The YouTube quality was okay, but I actually thought the album was really fun. Fun beat, fun lyrics, overall enjoyed, just wish it was easier to listen to (without YouTube ads in the middle of songs).

Liked it v funky

Groovy

The whole clintonverse is always something ive been interested in but never dove too deep. The little I have has very much impressed me. Maggot brain is one of the best funk records ive heard. Granted its one of a select few I have. But this one might not be thay level but its damn close, ill tell you that. Every song has alot to love. And so much good groves and great playing. Eddie hazel might be one of the best guitarists of this era or of all time. Dude can shred like none other. Some killer bass groves here too. And drums can hang too. Not to mention all the other supporting cast. Some amazing backup singers all over. And Clinton himself doing some weird shit. Preaching on one song and singing on others. Its a wild ride from front to back. And best of all is its enjoyable the whole time. Id love to get some more of this type of music thats for sure. I have many records to dig though cause damn the ly worked hard and I appreciate it to the core

I had already listened to Funkadelic's "Maggot Brain", and I enjoyed it. "One Nation Under a Groove", despite being Funkadelic's 10th album, is a delight. Usually, artists tend to go stale after a few albums. My favourite from "One Nation Under a Groove" has to be "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock". A live version of the title track from "Maggot Brain" makes a surprise appearance near the end of the album. 4 stars for "One Nation Under a Groove".

durchaus funky

"One Nation Under A Groove" was originally released as a six track album plus a three track EP. It's an easy, enjoyable listen and great fun. The standout for me was the blistering guitar work from Mike Hampton and the wonderful keyboards of Bernie Worrell and Walter "Junie" Morrison. The whole band just grooves and flows. Four stars. As funky as can be

The OG Funk album. Love!

RATING:3.8/5Much more my pace genre wise, i liked the funky instramentals and the psychadelic funk style. FAV SONG: Cholly (funk getting ready to roll), i like the instramental and vocals for this track. DURATION: 1hr 4m, 10 songs DATE: 17/05/26

39/1089 One Nation Under a Groove by Funkadelic Fucking hell. What an enjoyable album that was. I was out running while listening to it, and running has honestly never felt easier. This album is just pure fun. The grooves, the rock influences, the psychedelic weirdness that appears out of nowhere—it all somehow works together. God daaaamn. This is exactly why I’m doing this challenge. Discovering albums that I probably never would have put on myself and then ending up loving them. The whole thing just feels alive. Every time I thought I knew where a song was going, it would throw in some strange guitar, weird vocal, or funky groove that pulled me right back in. And the worst part? It's not even on Spotify, so now I need to figure out how to listen to it again. This is a 4 for me right now, but I could absolutely see it becoming a 5 after a few more listens. Wine pairing? Give me some funky natural wine from Alsace. Something weird, alive, and a little unpredictable. Food pairing? Korean fried chicken with way too much sauce, eaten with your hands while the record is playing loud. Favourite song? “Cholly (Funk Getting Ready to Roll!)” or the title track. Depends on the day. Vinyl? Don’t want it. Need it. First listen? Yes. Overall 4 out of 5.

*Awesome funk grooves make this an easy listen, although it blends together a little too much, causing no track to stick out more than another

Very artistic - nothing something I would have found on my own, but I thought it was a very creative and expressive album

1001 albums to hear before you funk until you sunk deep in the ground 101# this funky as heeellll I've heard Maggot Brain and that is miles different from this. Maggot is not really that fun, more introspective meditative. This is pure funkiness. I would ask just that the songs wouldn't be that long cause i wanted to put them on a playlist :) thats a minor thing. The length of the songs is the only complain.

Ya’ll mind if a white boy get a lil quirky in here?

mismo estilo

One one tune on Spotify, so my judgment is based on that. But I liked it!

Only managed to find the version on Spotify that includes 4 tracks of the original album. Nonetheless, a very solid 4 tracks. Raw sound, tends to be a bit dragged out.

Can’t believe it’s not streaming. Glad I have the LP

I've heard this one plenty but decided to give it a full revisit. Title track gets play from me plenty and is as funky as ever. Grovallegiance is just so good, the perfect balance of fun and smooth and well-written and well-played. WSAFBCPR (not typing all that) is a perfect mission statement and I can hear so much of the funk-influenced rock over the next decades I love spawning out of it. The tones, the groove, the self-referentiality of it all. It's really funny how beautiful Promentalshit is musically considering the everything else. I might be a bit inured to it growing up on lots of hip-hop which is obsessed with shit bars, or maybe the music and the background singing is just too pretty, but either way I can overlook it. It's another one I come back to. Into You is one of the main reasons I wanted to come back to the album as a whole, I just couldn't really remember it. The relisten reminds me why; it's just not that great. Technically fine and it works structurally in the album but I just don't really feel anything toward it. Cholly is a nice closer and really could have worked as an intro too, maybe even better. Just a great album and I'm glad I gave it the full listen again.

That was fun!

>"funk rock album" >look inside >prog rock album jokes aside, this really does blow away any expectations you might have had for this album. this album has a soul, but more importantly a Groove. shout out to Bootsy btw love you boss 9/10 FAVOURITE SONGS: GROOVALLEGIANCE, PROMENTALSHITBACKWASHPSYCHOSIS ENEMA SQUAD/THE DOO DOO CHASERS, MAGGOT BRAIN, P.E SQUAD/DOO DOO CHASERS

3 hits and some long, drawn-out jams. The jams are not that exciting, but the hits at the start of the album slap so hard that it launches the whole album into banger territory.

Me encantoo estuvo súper

4/5 favourite- Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock?

This was a fun funk album. I especially liked the first side, but didn't like the second side as much. Amazing bass playing.

realistically a 3.5/5... enema squad was a low point, doodoo chasers gotta chill out fr. fav: cholly

Solo hay 3 canciones disponibles para escuchar

This is another example one song defining the classic status. The title track is heavily sampled and interpolated and many hip hop and soul recordings from the 90s to today for darn good reason; it is one of the most classic funkiest grooves ever created. The rest of the album does a pretty good job backing it, but compared to the Funkadelic trifecta of the early seventies, the s/t to *Maggot Brain* this really feel like funk rehash rather than extending the genre. It definitely sounds dated for 1978 when Funk was watered down and made way for to disco. But there's are some notable exceptions. "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!" and the live "Maggot Brain" both which shows off their incredible new guitarist Mike "Kidd Funkadelic" Hampton. Also "Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)" is at least an entertaining piece of sophomoric sociopolitical satire. I give it props for that even if it doest move the needle. Ice cream is reality (7.8) ★★★½ (4 on the app)

Their best, an all time best

This album will make anyone dance! (Not available on Spotify - had to youtube it, annoying)

Este álbum si es más de mi estilo y lo que me gusta. Las canciones son bastante largas y melódicas. El álbum me hace vivir en vacaciones y en un estado optimista y de felicidad. Viva el R&B. Le doy un 8

4/5. My first brush with the Funkadelic/Parliament funk empire on the generator, and what a good one to start with. Sadly it’s not currently up on streaming (due to a record label dispute from what I understand) but there was a decent rip of it on YouTube. It starts very strong with the title track which has a fantastic bass-line along with some strong vocal delivery. And the album continues on that same pace with several great long funk-rock jams, including a really great live rendition of the Maggot Brain guitar solo near the end.

Helt klart en mycket hög grad av funky!

Not as good as maggot brain, but still good. So many layers in the tracks make any funkadelic track a journey

This album is a lot of fun and an exciting listen. The 11-minute "Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)" drags a bit in my opinion, but it's the only track I dislike on the album (and even then, the ending of the track was pretty great). It looks like some versions of the album even feature the phenomenal live version of "Maggot Brain," a personal favorite of mine. This is a tough one to score, I'm so close to giving it five stars but it's just not quite there for me. Favorite tracks: "One Nation Under a Groove," "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!"

It seems that Funkadelic’s “One Nation Under A Groove” isn’t available in its entirety on Spotify. That’s a shame, because the available tracks—“Who Says A Funk Band Can’t Play Rock” and “One Nation Under A Groove”—are really good, and some of the songs I looked up based on the tracklist are on a similar level. What stands out is Mike Hampton’s guitar work, which is remarkably virtuosic for a funk band—that alone would justify the “rock” label. Otherwise, it’s just 70s funk: pretty nice, well-arranged, and professionally produced, but everything is 3–5 BPM slower than you’d approach it today. It’s fine, I’d say.

8.5 / 10

🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑 Feels so unserious to write serious Funkadelic thoughts when I could just say "fried ice cream is a reality" but my tbh serious thoughts are that this is great—real, real great—and the only thing holding it back is that some jams genuinely feel too diffuse to sustain the groove nation. I prob just need another enema idk 1: Bad | 2: Okay, No Desire to Revisit | 3: Good, Conditionally (OR Inconsistent Mix of Qualities | 4: Great (OR Technically amazing but missing the sauce emotionally) | 5: Amazing

Oooooh I felt the funk alright. Fried ice cream is a reality.

Very good. I think I need to listen to more Funkadelic.

The band name explains it all. Funkadelic!

Not as good as Maggot Brain but still great.

The definition of funk

No one does funk like the Delic.

Love George Clinton

I’ve been on a great run lately. Enjoying this a lot 4 stars just wish it were on streaming!

It sure is groovy, and it's definitely more balanced out than Maggot Brain, and I definitely appreciate an entire 11 minute song about poop, and I can more than definitely appreciate how out there they are with all of these songs. It's ridiculously layered, sometimes to the point of getting way too complicated, but the second half clears itself up a lot. Speaking of the second half, I don't know where the metal guitars came from in Lunchmeataphobia but I wish they did that a little more throughout. It came totally out of left field. It's one of the many albums I can think of that could grow on me with time, but even right now I can say I quite enjoyed it.

good, LOVE funkadelic, works surprisingly well as background music

Yeah that was funky enough to be mildly enjoyable - it did make me dance a bit so mission accomplished on that front.

3,9 1. "One Nation Under a Groove" 2. "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!" 3. "Grooveallegience"

Funkin In Heaven

Really grateful I got to listen to this album. Incredible with great guitar licks. Feeling the funk 🕺 and the psychedelics...

After the first song I though id be bored listening to this album but I was proven wrong. I quite enjoyed this. The lead guitar and bass work is by far the highlight for me (I am a guitar player so I will be biased) especially in the last song, the 2 longer ones, and Lunchmeataphobia. It is very 70s in a good way, very much Hendrix inspired. I'd never heard of this before but I am pleasantly surprised.

Groovy. Me likey

band lives up to their name, i think the song names are strange but i don't think thats a bad thing i like the funk/rock fusion thing they've got going on, the long songs actually don't feel too long and definitely dont overstay their welcome album composition is good too but I don't think this one is a 5/5, maggot brain is a good ending but isnt the intended ending

A brilliant piece of funk, relentlessly entertaining throughout. None of the songs overstay their welcome, despite their long runtime. It's a bit frontloaded, though. Favourite track: Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!

Just one fantastic song after another.

Another great funk album from Funkadelic. I like the more rock parts on here but there's nothing but catchy bangers on here

Chill, funky, enjoyable

Made me want to dance.

Album #55, Funkadelic, One Nation Under a Groove ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I thought every song on this album was going to be about funk, but no…..there’s a 10 minute song about shit as well. I absolutely loved this album. It’s so fun, so inventive, so creative, and just really enjoyable. Despite a lot of the songs being very long, they never lose your interest. Just when you think it might drift, something new comes in, a melodic line, a great vocal, a searing guitar solo, or even just a lovely chord change, and it pulls you right back in. If you’re not into a track in minute one or two, you probably will be by minute four or five because they just keep evolving and grabbing your attention. Similar to ZZ Top yesterday, it’s not an album you need to overthink. You just need to feel it and go with it. It’s made for dancing more than analysing. I’m just really glad this album exists.

This is a great record but in my opinion not the best outing from George Clinton and company. Mothership Connection is one where the funk is stronger.

Some nasty bass from the man George Clinton groove central !

Maggot Brain was one of the first 20 LPs I had to listen to for this challenge – it was an album I enjoyed, but I had hoped for something funkier and more stylistically consistent with my first Funkadelic experience. Now nearly 200 LPs deep, I finally got my wish! This album rules. Full of personality, catchy songs and stellar performances, One Nation Under a Groove is one of those rare LPs that truly earns its "must hear" status any way you slice it. Sure, the songs can be kinda corny, but I feel like that's part of their appeal. There were a couple tracks I wasn't absolutely in love with (notably "Into You" and "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!"), but they weren't bad at all – I just didn't enjoy them to quite the same degree as the title track or "Promentalsh**backwashpsychosis Enema Squad." I'll quickly note that I'm not considering tracks 7-9 in my highlights or rating. I normally include everything from the original release, but two of the three tracks are alternative versions of other songs and are omitted on certain pressings, so I'll stick to the core six here (though the live version of "Maggot Brain" is brilliant). Highlights: One Nation Under a Groove, Groovallegiance, Promentalsh**backwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers), Cholly (Funk Getting Ready to Roll!)

Only prior exposure to George Clinton or Funkadelic was via the 90s frat boy film PCU Pit Party. Oh, and Maggotbrain. What I have come to learn about my musical tastes undertaking this project - I don’t like Psychedelica. Funk is hit and miss. But, I apparently love a mix of Funk and Psychedelica with a heavy dose of rock and roll. Fun album. I can see why Jeremy Piven invited these guys to play at the Pit Party. 4/5

Top ten start to finish.

hell yeah!

really good!

The original dance party band! They've pioneered an entire movement of groups that live off their live vibes of bringing joy and revolution to the people. Groove on!

very poggers

Really enjoyable and also pretty funny lyrically. Highlights are the title track, 'Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!' (which features some outstanding guitar work), and 'Cholly', but the whole album was great. Some tracks are maybe a little bit too long, however, especially ‘Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad’, which definitely didn't need a reprise either (great title though). Of course with a funk album the Rotofunkie Drum and Percussionatin' Thumpdans and Bass Thumpasaurians have starring roles, but I was really impressed with the Throbbasonic Funkgeetarists and Funkadelic Blamgusta Vocaloids too. Really strong 4 stars. Fried ice cream is a reality.

Hard to find on Spotify so didn’t listen to all of it. Favourite song was “who says a funk band can’t play rock music”

Funk yeah. Maggot Brain is absolutely insane.

I love band names that tell you exactly what you are going to get with their music. Funkadelic might be the best example out there. This is so goddamn funky. Most of the songs on here are rather long and feel like a jam session. Sometimes the songs can go on a smingen too long. 'Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)' is a prime example of this, clocking in at a colossal 11 minutes. The amusing spoken word passages and guitar playing keep the song enjoyable enough. They embrace the blending of genres with their cool as a cucumber fusion of funk and rock that had to influence the soulful shredding of Prince. They own this mixing of styles openly on 'Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!'. Its an utter travesty that when your average person on the street hears the words 'funk rock', that they're probably going to think of Red Hot Chili Peppers instead of a pioneering band like Funkadelic. You may not be able to find this record on streaming, but it is well worth going out your way to find it as it will blow your mind and get your ass shaking.
