Even better than Maggot Brain, really good vibey funk rock
Thoroughly enjoyable, although I wasn't clear why this was better than the other albums of theirs.
Okay, this was probably the precursor to so many G-funk tracks. Each track flows well, forming a cohesive sound that explores different grooves and tempos. And personally, it just makes me want to dance!! It's a quintessential funk album but also one that's undeniably proud of its Black roots. All that to say, I want nothing but the funk, George!
Only critique is that if a song is going to be in the 1001 songs i need to hear before I die that it is available on Apple or Spotify. Geesh! Once I found it on YT it was a great funk sound.
Growing up, I probably knew this album better than any other Funkadelic. So a lot of good nostalgia vibes.
Groovy. Artist voice is catchy.
This is definitely a strong album, more funk than rock at this point but the elements are there. It is a good time and the title track is classic. I do prefer when the group goes all in on the spacey psychedelic and the funk is the twist. This is much more funk forward which makes it danceable and higher energy. It's a great album, I wish it was easier to play in its entirety.
This is the kind of funk that's generally laid back and more psychadelic which is interestin in its own right. While I prefer Maggot Brain, this album has plenty to hold its own. I particularly liked Prometnalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad, and not just for the title and the lyrics, which are great. The instrumental, also fecally charged title, was really great. It reminded me of a funkier Pink Floyd guitar interlude, in the best way possible. Maybe it was just the effects on the guitars but I really liked it regardless. The songs do tend to drag on and seem repetitive at first, but part of the charm of funk is that all of the instrumentalists are improvising a little bit in every measure. This is a record that can be played at a party and can also be sat and appreciated alone just by looking for those little modifications everywhere. It's all about the groove for this album vs the antics of the faster, more energetic stuff they'd put out later, and it's still great.
It's hilarious to me how a band with such a corny name and corny song titles hits so hard. I really don't care for funk, but after my first Funkadelic album I was really hoping I'd get the chance to see them again on this generator. The music is so fun, and I really did feel thoroughly entertained throughout with the exception of maybe a song or two. The insertion of the guitar on 'Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!' was what really sent this one above for me. I didn't know that was something I needed to hear, but I'm so glad I did. Another great album by Funkadelic.
"Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!" is a banger.
funky
Føles ut som å være del av tidenes jamkveld.
Sprøtt og festlig.
Being not in the best place mentally right now it's hard to make myself listen to genres that are different from the ones that usually give me comfort. But I’m trying not to stay stuck inside my comfort zone when it comes to musicand I also don’t want to build up a huge backlog on this site, so… I don't like funk funk funky funk and I'm not in the mood to listen to this without skipping tracks but i recognize that this is good and might be interesting enough for me to give it a listen sometime. Sounds good enough for a 4
only 3 songs available on spotify but they were great
Funky, layered, and so much fun! I had never even heard of Funkadelic before today, but I'm glad to have discovered them.
7 / 10 - Zweites Album, zweites Funkadelic Record - "Do you promise the Funk, the whole Funk, nothing but the Funk" - Dieses mal mehr Funk als Psychedelic-Rock Favs: - One Nation Under A Groove - Who says a Funk Band can't play Rock?! - Lunchmeataphobia

me gusto muy divertido ojala tocar así
Funky, groovy, and on YouTube because… you know, Spotify, so I had to stay engaged. Anytime an album makes you want to get up and dance… solid.

Funkadelic is the more rocking side of the P-Funk collective. Good stuff, but I kinda prefer the funkier Parliament.
Liked the tracks on this one more overall than Maggot Brain, funk bands can play rock indeed. Favourite track, I mean come on: Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)
8.5/10 Very creative funk music with odd lyrics, awesome production.
I don't think the Spotify link worked properly, just sent me to the one tune? Great tune though
enjoyable but not perfect
This album really is a justice for all Funk fans. I just wish the songs weren't so drawn out. Favorite Track: "One Nation Under A Groove".
What a great find. I love the first track so much.
The ending jam on this album is phenomenal. Had to listen on YouTube unfortunately.
Funky
Nice and funky album
Dirty and funky. Shame it's not on streaming services!
this is when I fell off and forgot to check albums daily. to be fair, I was sorta locked in and focused on researching my for my concept papers etc. okay back to this album now. i really life the art work. songs are funky, as the title suggests. starting to notice that songs in the 70s had a lot that were quite long, between 7-12 minutes. ooooo Groovallegiance is such a vibe. overall the album is a 4 because the amount of stank face i did
In Groove We Trust
Groovy af with a lot of sweet rock licks Fried ice cream is a reality
Was a fun album, makes for a great listening session while doing anything else 4/5
Not as funky as expected, but good.
Funker bra det her, men savner sterkere låtfokus.
Surprisingly more enjoyable than I expected it to be
Amazing vibes all around, but that last track was exceptional. I love me a good guitar solo, and that was no exception. I was cleaning my room while listening to this album, and I just had to stop and just sit down to fully experience that last track. Very good listening experience, I love funk.
You can really tell how James Brown inspired Funkadelic, though, James Brown essentially created funk and inspired all funk bands that followed. The Godfather of Soul was the actual daddy of funk. Then George Clinton was the cool stepdad who came in a raised funk after James Brown went out for cigarettes. Actually, Funkadelic sounds more like Sly and the Family Stone than James Brown, though both groups started out around the same time, and Funkadelic was more rock and roll than soul or R&B. Way more rock and roll. Funkadelic seems to be like a lot of early 80s heavy metal bands. Those early heavy metal bands sang a lot of songs about rocking or how rock and roll was going to save us all. There are about a dozen bands that were out there preaching the gospel of rock. Funkadelic were the evangelists of funk, and they want to baptize you in weed and fat bass riffs. Track 1, One Nation Under A Groove, is funky and very Sly and the Family Stoneish. It's one of their most well-known songs. It has more funk than rock, but the rest of the album makes up for that. It's good stuff, but I was blown away as the album went on. Track 2, Groovallegiance, really shows off the rock chops of the band, and there is a smoky guitar solo in there that Jimi Hendrix couldn't have played as well. Track 3, Who Says a Funk Band Can’t Play Rock, lets you know, they’re a funk band first and a rock band 1A. That main riff is funky, but heavy at the same time. Mike Hampton and Gary Snider are f’n shredders. The guitar solos in this song are INCREDIBLE. I’m blown away. The solos in this song are as good as any that came out in 1978. Blown away, I tell ya, bloooooooooowwwwwn. Track 4, Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad, is just a mess. George Clinton is reciting a pledge, and it's being repeated by the rest of Funkadelic as another person is singing the song. It’s all mixed together to the point where you really can’t make out what either is saying. Worst song by far on the album. The guitars, again, are really good, but the vocals are a mess. Hell, it’s 11 minutes long. I was just going to skip it, but I have 6 more minutes, hopefully it gets better. It didn’t. That song ruins most of the goodwill the first 3 songs built up. Track 5, Into You, is already good. Track 4 is confusing. It really took me out of the album. Track 6, Cholly (Funk Get Ready To Roll), is certainly funky. It’s also the last song on the actual album. I guess Track 4 was one they had to put on to fill out the album? I’m still bumfuzzled about Track 4. The band also released an EP as a companion piece to the album. Not sure if it’s part of the main album really. But, as I’m listening on YouTube, it goes right into the first track on the EP, a live version of Maggot Brain, from Funkadelic’s album of the same name. It’s so good and one of their most well-known songs. I know I keep saying it, but the guitar playing in this band is phenomenal. You don’t really think amazing guitar work with funk bands. You generally think of bass and drums. Track 2 on the EP, Lunchmeataphobia (Think, It Ain't Illegal Yet!), is a nice heavy rock song with a side of funk. Nonsense lyrics, but I’m here for the groove anyway. The final track on the EP is an instrumental version of One Nation Under A Groove. It’s about three minutes shorter, though. The guitar playing on this album is really good, but I think you know that by now. This is a great album. I really liked it, though track 4 kept me from loving it. I just didn’t get it. I don’t get a lot of songs, but if they’re pleasant to listen to, I’m in. Funkadelic, I think, could have been a huge touring rock band today, maybe. I don’t think the 1970s were ready for them. The casual white rock fan probably had no idea who they were. Plus, they were very weird. Very weird. But I love weird, and I love rock and this album provides both. Is it a must-hear before you die? I think so. I think if you were to hear it, you’d be just as blown away as I was and just as confused about track 4 as I was. I’m hoping more Funkadelic is on the list.
Macht extrem viel Spaß! Wie bei Bandname und Albumtitel zu erwarten unfassbar groovy, aber auch ein sehr spannender Genremix mit einigen rockigeren Einlagen und tollen Gitarrensoli. Stark!
Funky. Not quite as good a Maggot Brain. Too bad it doesn't seem to be available on any streaming services. It is on YouTube, though.
Funkadelic, the perfect, bad day medicine.

it's got groove it's got meaning... wat een heerlijk gitaargejengel
Great funk album, stood the test of time. Some great stuff on there, and I'll be giving this another listen soon. One of their other albums has been on my list for a long time; pretty sure it's also on this big 1001 list somewhere. 8 / 10
Pænt groovy, hvem skulle have troet det
Fried ice cream IS a reality! Thanks for the psychic enema.
If I'm ever tasked with getting a dance party going, this will be the album to do it. P-Funk were more than just a band, they were a cultural revolution and a social movement. This album captures that spirit perfectly.
holy funk ! Liked songs: 1 Nation Under a Groove Feb 9, 2026 (7:30 PM)
Hard to find, weird cover, love this era of Funkadelic. Not my favorite but still really goot.
chaotic and fun
Excellent funky baselines (obviously). Very catchy and accessible rocky funk which I am delighted to be exploring.
Gets you movie and shaking…wonderful stuff 🎸
I listened to assorted Funkadelic tracks but not this album. I would say they live up to their name!
When they get it right, they get it *right*. Some incredibly funky grooves, and the guitar is Hendrix like throughout. It does dip a few times - some of the chatter is a bit dull, and it does get repetitive, but still enioyable. Right on the 3/4 boundary, just scrapes a 4
Groovy
Amazing album, and not available on my streaming service of choice (Spotify), which is a goddamn travesty.
Just wish it was easier to stream.
Pieces this together on Apple Music. 4?
This was a rad funky time. Also Today I learned parliament funkadelic is the name of two separate George Clinton bands.
I just had Maggot Brain a few albums ago so this is a fun comparison. This record is much weirder, and funkier, and longer- it’s chockfull of funky grooves and Hendrixian riffs. Excellent stuff. I was surprised to find a live version of “Maggot Brain” close out the album, and even more surprised that it isn’t Eddie Hazel on the solo! Absolutely no dip in quality there, which is astounding. It can only be- FOUR STARS
Oh my funk is this ever groovy! Impossible not to enjoy yourself listening to this album.
Impossible not to move your hips. A little self indulgent at times but groovy none the less.
very enjoyable 4 stars
Some great funk tunes, but some songs went a bit too long for my taste. The last two songs had exceptional guitar playing. Faves: Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!, Lunchmeataphobia
Álbum muito rico musicalmente. Ótimos vocais e instrumentos. Celest Phoenixcall.
This is really fun and funky as hell, the music is great and the group vocals are great too
Just get down with the funk, way to go George. Get your groove on 4.Stars
Listened to it whilst on a journey - very effective no fav song in particular Overall it was decent 7/10
Certainly an experience, this one. The last song had me FLOORED though, and made me bump it from a 3 to a 4.
You WILL funk whether you want to or not. You’ll never be the same after 45 minutes at the altar of George Clinton and Funkadelic. Their religion is Funk and this is unabashed indoctrination extolling the values of, and how to, when to, and why to funk. Clinton and crew display unmatched harmony and skill, serving to beat your ever-funking mind to pieces with a groove that can’t be ignored, thrashing guitars, and a choir that knows the assignment. Through repetitive mantra-esque lyrics, a single listen to any of the 6 tracks on the original LP will have you committed to the funk. By the end you’ll be pledging allegiance to the groove just like all of your favorite artists already have. A fantastic ride - get this thing on streaming services!
I enjoyed this. It's one of those albums where I wouldn't really listen to just one song. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The instrumentation and harmonies were great. A downfall of it is that the only place you can listen to it online, at least as of now, is YouTube. I did get an ad in the middle of Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad The Doo Doo Chasers because of how long it is (which is a bit too long, in my opinion).
No songs, all vibe, charisma and musicianship. I'm not complaining!
As much as I love George Clinton and all he did, I couldn’t really connect with this album. Lots of cool grooves, definitely funky, but probably needs a better listen. Unfortunately, the only platform I could listen to it on was YouTube. Random mid-song commercials really mess a groove.
I developed a fear of being eaten by a sandwich after this.
Good
I couldn’t find a way to listen to this album but I watched a documentary about it and I’m just gonna assume it’s awesome
Very fun listen
wasn’t available on spotify, so i listened to let’s take it to the stage by funkadelic instead
I’m not even going to try to map George Clinton’s exact place in music history. I simply don’t know enough, and that seems like an excellent reason not to pretend otherwise. A quick look at the George Clinton “family tree” already borders on the surreal: seventeen guitarists alone, plus a mysterious “Sir Nose” subsection I still don’t fully understand. Suffice it to say that Clinton’s musical universe is vast, influential, and wildly sampled—over three thousand times, according to WhoSampled. By the late seventies, Clinton’s empire had split its personality across two main outlets: Parliament, leaning toward funk and soul, and Funkadelic, supposedly the rockier counterpart. One Nation Under a Groove is often framed as the place where those two worlds collide, neatly summarized by the song: Who says a funk band can’t play rock? But that collision never quite turns into a full embrace. The album opens with the title track, a straight-up funk anthem. It’s solid, groovy, and historically important—but for all the talk of guitars, they barely register here. The second track starts as smooth soul-funk with a choir that, frankly, I find pretty unpleasant, before abruptly mutating halfway through into a guitar-driven rock passage, as if half the band swapped places mid-song. It’s an interesting idea, but also oddly disjointed. That pattern keeps repeating. Some tracks lean heavily into rock, others resolutely into funk, and a few gesture at synthesis without really committing. “Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad” (yes, that’s the title) sprawls endlessly and tilts rockward; “Into You” does the opposite, funk first with guitar hovering politely in the background. The nominal closer, “Cholly (Funk Gettin’ Ready to Roll),” is pure funk—no rock pretense at all. Complicating matters is the version I heard. On CD, the album continues with bonus tracks, including a live take on “Maggot Brain.” That radically shifts the balance. Suddenly we’re deep into guitar-heavy territory, and “Maggot Brain”—one of the most extraordinary guitar performances ever recorded in its original version—inevitably steals the spotlight. But that song belongs to another album, another moment, and another guitarist entirely. Its presence here distorts the listening experience. All of which leaves me with mixed feelings. This is undeniably a good album, and even the moments that don’t quite land are worth hearing. Still, for a record supposedly about merging funk and rock, it often feels more like alternation than fusion. The two styles dance around each other rather than truly locking in. With the bonus tracks, I’d give it an eight. Without them—judging the original album on its own terms—it’s closer to a seven. And as always, the original album is the one that really counts.
Funk, The Whole Funk, And Nothing But The Funk 1001 Albums Generator 197 (1/2/2025) This album was the hardest one to find so far. It's not on Spotify or YTM, which really sucks because it is quite a great album. The opener and Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock? are great pieces of pure funk that lean a little bit on the rock elements that Funkadelic was known for, while Grooveallegiance shows a much slower, almost jazzy side of the band. Both work fantastically. There is a live version of Maggot Brain here that is just awesome and has, along with Who Says A Funk Band..., my favorite guitar work here. Lunchmeataphobia is really strangely heavy, which is not something that I knew Funkadelic was capable of. I'm not sure I would go so far as to call it metal, but it's a lot closer than you'd expect. This album has this great mix of very serious musicianship and very silly song titles and vocals (two songs have the subtitle Doo Doo Chasers, and one of these is an amazing psych/funk rock instrumental). However, the album isn't perfect. Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis is, like its title, too long in my opinion. I also think that you can tell that the first disk was the original album, since the second disk, starting with the live version of Maggot Brain, feels more disjointed (although not really lower quality), and the album starts to feel a bit too long. However, One Nation Under A Groove is overall a fantastic bit of funk rock that I wish was easier to access. 4/5. Favs: One Nation Under A Groove Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock? Maggot Brain (Live) Least Fav: Cholly (Funk Getting Ready To Roll)
I couldn’t really listen to the album because they took it off of Spotify… but the song with the same name is good! I liked it, it reminded me of sitting in my grandparents truck listening to music they played while they drove me around California.
Good album, nice sound. I like Funkadelic but this is not their best album.
I come for the funk, but I stay for the guitar solos. Michael Hampton, or "Throbbasonic Funkgeetarist Kid Funkadelic" as he's credited, plays insane guitar solos throughout the madcap funk on this album, some that could even rival Hendrix. Seriously some of the best guitar work I've heard in a long time. I once saw George Clinton and the P-Funk All-Stars live at Electric Picnic, and I still talk about how nuts it was. There was so much happening on stage at all times. A big dude dancing around in a diaper. At one point, a tall guy dressed like a swanky pimp was introduced to the crowd - he walked on stage left, waved, swung his cane, and promptly exited stage right. At any given moment there were maybe 15–20 people on stage, some playing instruments, some singing, the rest just contributing to the vibe. So, it's not surprising that a lot of this album is completely nuts. For example, "Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)" is about as normal as its name. Multiple spoken word conversations take place over the music and singing, before the guitar solo silences everyone. And somehow, despite the madness, it's a seriously good song. You get the impression that Clinton throws ideas together without much planning and just trusts that it'll work out. The truth is that he's just operating on a completely different level to the rest of us. His instincts, no matter how crazy they are, are always right. Much like the onstage madness at the Electric Picnic, there's just so much going on all at once throughout this entire album, but it never feels overwhelming. It just always works.

I honestly liked this album more than the previous one. I had to listen to it on YouTube since there is only two songs on Spotify and it was really fun. Had me feeling energised and wanting to dance. It was very enjoyable, I just wish the chance of me listening to it again was bigger if they uploaded it on Spotify. But a nice listen.
That shit Funkaaaay, need to download the album
4.5
Mad how old this is, fantastic to listen to
I’ve been looking forward to some Funkadelic, clearly a big influence on Talking Heads, and of course, founding member Bernie Worrell would later join as a touring member. This album was everything it promised to be; funky, psychedelic with grooves and some outstanding guitar riffs. It got a little soulful somewhere in the middle and I almost started to lose a bit of interest, and that’s the only reason it doesn’t get maximum marks, however, they quickly picked up the pace. I even stayed for the bonus tracks, I liked it so much.
Had to go to Youtube for this one - I hate that. The recording quality was not that great although I found the pauses between songs (as if I was literally listening on vinyl) endearing. This album oozes with impressions and memories of what I thought 1970's NYC life was like all the time. Very groovy record. I especially enjoyed the final 2 tracks - PE Squad and Maggot Brain. I would have favorited both tracks if Spotify. I'm torn a bit on rating this - it's probably a 3 based on my rating criteria (would I seek it out) but in this case I want to encourage a relisten so +1. 4/5
i can definitely hear the james brown influence but also why is it also giving the experimental vibe of pink floyd to me… i had to listen on youtube so that definitely made me feel like i was listening to it on vinyl which is silly. overall it’s very much right up my alley
Funky
Really amazing album, the grooves are immaculate, absolutely love it. It’s a shame it’s not on streaming due to copyright stuff. It doesn’t grip me as much as some of the other albums to be a definite relist, but I’d love to hear more. Solid four star album, very close to a five.
not bad at all, nice sound
I'm not a particularly funky person but I enjoyed this -esp the title track. Side B gets a bit loose but still enjoyed it.
очень даже кайфово и качово оказалось! после первого их альбома прям боялась слушать это, но понравилось
This wasn't available on Youtuber Music. So I listened to a newer version of it. It was really good.
Alright, alright, alright! Busy day today, got a nice jacket and park run so almost no time to re-listen to this, but I do have it on vinyl as it wasn't on Spotify, one of the first records I ever bought actually. Classic funk, robably can go to 4 stars, will see
More classic funk feeling moments that some of the broader Clinton oeuvre, but in no world am I gonna listen to this when Maggot Brain exists, and has a better version of that very same track on it! Strong 3.5*
This is just so very cool and chill. This is great for any party, any sunday morning and any working day, great stuff
groovy as hell, maggot brian is better but this was sick
I really love Maggot Brain but never listened to this one. I don’t think any songs topped ‘Can you get to that’ but the funk was funking.
This one was tough to find? (maybe just in Canada?) anyway, worth the hunt.
as always, with funkadelic, the groove is front and center. this is a funky-ass album. it does not quit. fun listen. off kilter and corny, but that's the name of the game. the music is pure fun. if you are not grooving in your seat, listening to this, then you're doing something wrong. all that said, there was something about it that did not push it into my upper echelon. it's a party of a time, but not enough of a party? i kind of wanted it to be more energetic, more frenetic, more crazy. it feels kind of too subdued. don't get me wrong, i enjoyed it a lot, i just wish it felt more like a rager.
This was wierd... way wierd. Wierder than I expected. And I was here for it.
3 stars, but 4 with the bonus disc with the live version of Maggot Brain and P.E. Squad/Doo Doo Chasers!! Fav tracks: One Nation Under A Groove, Maggot Brain (live), P.E. Squad/Doo Doo Chasers
Excellent lp. It reminds me of slightly less funky version of Trout Mask Replica.
Lots of bangers on here. It feels like it has the vibes of a hyper-produced electronic pop song, but you know they’re just jamming. === Special callouts for Cholly and Maggot Brain
Hard to deny. I'm going to have to listen to Maggot Brain to see which one I like more.
couldn't access it on spotify, found it on youtube. funk is so interesting to me as something you doesnt listen to it. the lyrics make sense but they're absurdist. its like a camus novel with groove and a backing choir. fried ice cream is a reality man. a lot of great songwriting and the penultimate song is a sudden rock-based guitar solo. very accessible funk for a rock fan. 7.5/10 but leans 4/5
A fun and tight album
crazy piece of funk i love this album now all I need is a joint to smoke and then this album will be even more funky.
good album a lot of different tones and pacing throughout
The funk-ler
George Clinton is a legend. Great listen!
To quote The Prodigy from when I was listening to their album earlier this week: "Oh my God that's some funky shit!" 3.5/5 that I have no problem rounding up to a 4.
funk! funk! funk!
Funky
Funk at its best! George Clinton, Bootsy Collins and co. do little wrong here to ensure 'One Nation Under a Groove' is a landmark achievement of the funk genre. While far less commercial than sister band Parliament, Funkadelic certainly ups the experimental stakes with their records, especially on their landmark third record 'Maggot Brain', but 'One Nation Under a Groove' actually finds Funkadelic stepping more into Parliament territory, crafting funk jams that are as toe-tapping as they are experimental. The first half of the record certainly alludes to this, as One Nation Under a Groove, Grooveallegiance and Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock? are all rather catchy, especially the latter with its infectious rhythm and incredible guitar work. The only real Funkadelic-esque song on the album is Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers), with enough experimentation hearkening back to Funkadelic's classic sound, but this album certainly plays like a Parliament album in disguise as a Funkadelic album, which works in this case as 'One Nation Under A Groove' became Funkadelic's most commercially successful record. 'One Nation Under A Groove' stands alongside Parliament's 'Mothership Connection' as the finest funk has to offer, and while I prefer Mothership ever so slightly, this album is a great starting point to explore the depths of Funkadelic's fearless creativity. If you like this record, then go check out 'Maggot Brain' and see if you can stomach it. Best songs: One Nation Under a Groove, Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?, Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)
What a wonderful listen. I think this project is slowly making me more of a fan of funk/soul. It’s an actual crime this gem isn’t on Spotify.
Very easy to bounce your head to Favourites: One Nation Under a Groove Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers) P.E. Squad/Doo Doo Chasers
Leider scheint das Album in Spotify kaputt zu sein und zeigt nur drei Songs - aber die sind recht gut
Funky funny!
Instantly made me happier
"The whole funk, and nothing but the funk!"
Funky goodness.
Not sure what rights fight is keeping this off Spotify, but that's such a bummer. Great album. If I could add to my playlist, I think I would add "Groovallegiance" (track 2) and then either the title track (Track 1) or Cholly (the last track in its original album form). Great listen, even though I tend to be more of a fan of earlier Funkadelic.
Joyous funky psychedelic rock, strong soul / gospel influences, great bass riffs - just fun and I will be listening again
it's a 3.5 for me. i cannot use .5 stars but today i feel good so i give 4 :)
Skall återse.
Funk legends
Super groovy mind bending funk album with a mix of genres thrown in. This one will keep you bouncing. Only one song that I would considered a skip, all others were infectious.
Listened to many times, along with every other P-Funk album. The thing I'll say about this album is that it's probably the least likely album I will listen to with other people. It's less of the upbeat danceable music they've been known to make. Cholly and Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?! are exceptions to that. It's more psychedelic and has a darker tone than the other Funkadelic (and certainly Parliament) albums I listen to more often. But it's really good nonetheless.
Now this is a solid album. Much better than the other Funkadelic album I've listened to (Maggot Brain). An interesting mix of rock and funk, that turns out really well. Plus, it's got some awesome guitar work.
Groovier than it is funk but that's a distinction that doesn't need to be made when the album is that good. First 3 tracks are spectacular, kinda dies out till "Maggot Brain" which just grabs you by the ears and pulls you in. Then P.E Squad; nothing needs to be said besides fried ice cream is a reality These are the kinda albums I needed when joining this group. Would have never went outta the way to check this out but it forced me to listen with a clear conscience, an open mind and enjoyed most of the 59.36 minute time length. Disclaimer: This isn't on Spotify, so get an ad blocker or something for YouTube. 4/5 Stars
Not on Spotify anymore but YT had it. Some great stuff, some weird stuff but liked it
Just gritty, raw, funk rock. George Clinton is one of the greatest songwriter's of all time. The rhythms and rebellious energy fill this album with life. There are probably better Funkadelic albums, but this one's still solid. Favorite songs: Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock, Cholly, Into You.
Couldn't find this one on apple music, found it on spotify and it wasn't playable. Found a stream of the whole album on youtube, glad I did. Here's a link to anyone who might be reading this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmDNMx9FRgI Really cool stuff, awesome guitar work...extended jams are awesome. Not sure why this isn't available on streaming platforms but it's great. Some of the talking over the tracks is a distraction...man, just let this music play, no one needs to hear your coked out ramblings.
Yeah funky I liked it.
Maybe a bit too indulgent for me. Fun though.
Really solid album, more consistent than Maggot Brain but arguably not as many highs. I could see myself listening through this ever now and again even if none of the individual songs would be my go to.
This was great. No doubt about it
El funk, como otros géneros, por periodos me cuesta. Pero es un álbum con el que apetece ponerse a bailar con sonidos ricos. Le pongo un 4 aunque creo que por mi gusto personal sería un 3.5
He’s got the funk
If we really were one nation under a groove, a lot of our problems would be solved.
Finky
Kahju, et seda kulda Spotifys väga pole. Kuulasin albumit hoopis Youtube'st. Siin plaadil on tõesti palju head kraami. Mõned pikemad lood (kuni 10 min!) on täitsa omaette kogemused. Funki-huvilisele tundub see album olevat kohustuslik kuulamine ja mulle see ka tõesti meeldib.
Pleasant durprise
This is good enough that it pisses me off that I've become dependent on streaming (and it's just not easily available).
God damn, I did not know what I was missing. There are some awesome, awesome songs on here. That said, there's some long-winded jam bandy stuff that lost me. Still, 4-stars for some outright classics, and for an album that I'm sure will grow on me with more listens.
I must admit I didn’t finish this, but not because I didn’t like it. I thought it was bright and inventive without being annoying. The funk of Isley Bros without the blandness, and the jam-iness of Yes without quite so much wank.
Vähän katkonaisesti tuli tämä levy kuunneltua läpi. Kuitenkin jäi posit fiilikset, rentoa seiskytluvun meininkiä. Sen kummemmin erottelematta pannaan neljä staraa!
Tons of fun. It's just so funky Favorite Song: One Nation Under A Groove
It might be their most accessible album, even with ‘the doodoo chasers’ appealing to the teenage boy in me, but there is another, earlier album I hold in higher regard. Hint: the title track is on the EP that originally came with this album
Would be three stars but Mike Hamptons Guitar freaking sings! Also, is it mandatory that 95% of funks lyrics have to be the word funk over and over again?
great album
Ameisin
This album is a real mood, and a good one at that. Definitely something I could put on and just have on in the background all day, or actively listen to; it fits both of those for me pretty well. 3.75/5
Fun album. I like this more than Maggot Brain. Doo Doo Squad represent. 3.75/5
Its very weird the way that ONUAG starts by dropping you in what sounds like part way through the song. As if there is a hidden intro (or more) that they thought nah lets just cut that. Why does this album have Maggot Brain on it? Seems a bit unnecessary. This album feels like a debut album - its very loose and jam bandy (obviously). Its weird that its 7 years after Maggot Brain, it feels less mature. Nonetheless it features some absolutely insatiable funk, many many undeniable bops and boppy moments. Fave Tracks: One Nation Under A Groove, Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers), 3.9/5
Do you promise to funk, the whole funk, and nothing but the funk?
This was great. The live version of maggot brain is super cool.
Pretty good
Oh he'll yeah
Had only ever heard Maggot Brain (which I love) so was good to hear more from Fubkadelic. This is definitely not as essential but still has some fantastic, infectious grooves. The riff to Doo Doo Chasers is so good.
These people are making music from another planet in a different dimension. This exists ion its own level. Really impressive.
Obviously funky, but perhaps less obviously rocks pretty hard as well. Guitar is very enjoyable. About as mad a collection of track names as you could imagine having. I'm definitely under this groove though.
Funky. The first song is by far the standout, however overall an album I enjoyed with a bit of variety.
These songs had some great grooves on it. Funky rhythmic easy listening groove music.
A very silly album, in a fun way. I'm glad I listened to it. The comedy songs would be hard to listen to again, but the rest were great.
I had trouble listening to this whole thing as it wasn’t on streaming. But it was a good funk album!
I once had moral diarrhea after going to Wing Stop. Thank god for this album, I can finally clean up my doo-doo.
A solid funk album. Good groves and keeps you interested
George Clinton & the P-Funk All-Stars were my second concert ever, and even with only a vague awareness of their catalog, I was instantly pulled into the party. That same energy lives here. This album is pure Funkadelic- funky, fresh, and irresistibly danceable. It’s the kind of record that makes you realize how impossible it is to talk about funk without talking about George Clinton and everything he touched. Historically, One Nation Under a Groove was their commercial peak, a defining moment where funk stretched out into the mainstream without losing its edge. The title track alone became an anthem, but the whole album showcases that blend of groove, humor, and psychedelic weirdness that made P-Funk a movement, not just a band.
Peak funkiness, they are the masters of this sound and style
Put on your sunglasses and get ready to funkify yourself.
10/10 first track, the rest is good but not great
Love me some funk
Good album. As always, incredible bass coming out of funkadelic.
The album is no longer on Spotify. Listened to the title song though
En nyt tiiä kuuluko tässä olla 3 vai 10 biisiä...koska lukee 10 mut näkyy vaan 3. Mutta oli oikein funky. Mielenkiintoinen. Hyväntuulinen. Laadukas.
Funky and groovy as hell!Absolute fun and bliss to my ears!RnB/hIP-hoP never was sexier and boogie-r than in this album!Clever underground naming of songs definatelly ads to the loose fun/funk factor and maybe ispired others like Underworld's Dubnobasswithmyheadman album titling? i mean there is a little something for all in this album, see Who says a Funk band can't play Rock which says it all! 4 stars for me for some of the long plays except for the live Maggot Brain take which is one of the best phychedelic rock tracks i've ever heard and never wanted to end but it does with the crowd chanting ''think it ain't illegal yet''prologuing next song!
Clinton and the crew manages to craft a mind melding funk psychedelic landscape as only they do best. A milestone in music that would go onto greatly influence modern hip-hop, rock, and other acts
I wish i loved something as much as these guys love funk. A big, sprawling, joyous, filthy, angry, funky oddessy
Top tier bass playing of course. Really melodic and very cool considering it had only been an instrument for like 25 years. I really like the extended jams on Groovallegiance and the subversion of the pledge is classic. I am hearing a lot of what I think has inspired other jam bands. Tim from DMB plays a lot like this. Farther in I am hearing where a lot of Kendrick, Childish Gambino, etc are getting some musical ideas. Maybe this is just what 70's funk sounds like? This is definitely not radio-friendly but it's very jammy and vibey and I could see having it on at a party with more musical friends. It sounds very good if not super hi-fi due to the mix and everything having a nice tape-y saturation to it. Maggot Brain and Pink Floyd have a lot in common (with a much better bassline). This is wild! The cocked wah solo thing was everywhere I guess. Overall very cool and I dig it. Probably 4 stars. Not sure what my criteria for a 5 is but I'll find it I'm sure.
Really really good -- for the life of me, I just can't understand why this album wouldn't be included on their discography on Spotify. Always makes these ones harder to listen to and keep track of, but even so, I can tell this is real special. Love me sum funk!
The spoken stuff meanders a bit much for my tastes but it's still enjoyable. The more traditional songs are absolutely fantastic.
George Clinton feels extremely underrated, the opening track might be the best single song we've gotten on this project. The rest of the songs are still really good but don't grab me quite the same way. I just love how much is going on in these songs, it's overwhelming in the best possible way. Sweet and sour bowel movements is also an amazing throwaway line lol.
There is a lot of layer of instrumentation and vocals for each song, but they weave together well rather than as an overwhelming wall of sound. And got damn is there some incredible stanky funk guitar
It’s no Maggot Brain but FUCK it’s pretty good
Maggot Brain!!!
This shit's goofy but in a good way. The term "Svengää kuin hirvi" was invented to describe music like this.
Classic hard rock. The live version of Maggot Brain is unbelievable.
I could listen to the title track One Nation Under A Groove forever. I think Funkadelic could too that's why they cut it off so abruptly after 7 minutes of ontological funk perfection. That live version of Maggot Brain Insane I wish I could've been around to see Funkadelic in concert.
Good
Funky !
3.5/5
Very interesting. The title track absolutely sets you up for a different record. You think it's going to be completely Clinton/Collins glam funk with a dozen hooks per track.. And then it isn't. It feels like it slowly shifts into quite a mature psychedelic rock record. I do love the p-funk, but this is interesting too
There is so much going on here and I have to tease out the elements I like. I don't connect to the free flowing jams, but when the funk is hard and tight I hop on for the ride.
Forgot to listen to this one, but I love every other Funkadelic album I’ve heard, so I’m sure it’s great
Very interesting album, to say the least. Before the rest, i have to say i love Into You a lot. The groove and the vocals, very tasty, very pleasant music. I like how the vocals are used as an instrument at times throughout the album, how they blend with the music. It further strengthens the groove! I like Cholly (Funk Getting Ready To Roll) but i doubt id ever pull it up to listen to it or even listen to it if it came on shuffle. It is a fun little song but it doesnt really stand out The guitar in Lunchmeataphobia is incredible. Thats all. The song after that one which i will not type the name of, is also very nice. I like what theyre doing with the guitar, though im not sure if the guitar is happy to be violated like that. Maggot brain is insane. Damn. 4/5 Songs are lengthy, while that is not a bad thing in and of itself, when its long bits music i dont care for, it gets boring. A lot of songs are funky and creative but they arent anything special. Generally, it was a nice experience and a few songs i did add to my playlist but even those i might skip occaisonally because theyre not really songs id listen to on shuffle, the way i usually listen to music. But still, quite nice album.
Les goooooo you bloody funkadelic! da bini so ghyped gsi dasi sogar uf e chlini recherche-tour gange bin wie dasi doch s ganz album chan lose -> Youtube my savior. Und het sich glohnt. Was gits bessers wie funk?
It was okay to listen to. Had good rhythm.
Funky album. "Maggot brain" is great. 4/5
8/10
Two 1978 albums in a row. This’s on is certainly more of a vibe album with 6 songs, mostly coming in at around 6 minutes and more. One you can get up and shake your ass to or kick back and groove to. With it's undeniable funk sound, it takes in influence from R&B, soul, and rock, particularly prog rock and its influence can be seen in both rock and rap, especially throughout the 90s. Dr Dre credits the P Funk sound directly on the sounds of his G Funk era. The title track is a classic but personally I love my. Fave track Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock?! ... although surely this is directly responsible for Lenny Kravitz
Eddie Hazel is not to be denied as a guitarist.
It's unfortunate that it's hard to find this album in streaming as i I really enjoyed its sound
I already love Maggot Brain by Funkadelic, and until now, I've never had the pleasure of listening to One Nation Under A Groove from start to finish. Great funk tracks, and a surprising amount of experimental spoken word, extended instrumentals, and surreal humor. Now I want to watch a documentary about George Clinton.
The guitarwork on this thing is fucking nuts. Fried ice-cream is a reality. I didn't really note much else, I just had a good experience and enjoyed the listen with my brain switched OFF.
The only thing more frustrating than an album not being available for streaming? Having it only be very partially available for streaming. Checking the Spotify album for this and seeing only 3 tracks (one of which being an instrumental) despite an alleged 1hr+ runtime is always fun! I can't let this affect my enjoyment of the album itself though (other than wishing more of this was available on spotify). Another great groovy pick for this list with some magically psychadelic rock riffs (and not in the boring way that a lot of beatles wannabes acted in the 60s). We need to return to a time where the peak of lyrical witticism was having some whimsically danceable beat playing with one of the singers saying some goofy shit like 'You are receiving an international call from; THE FUNK, do you wish to accept the charges?'
Legalise crack cocaine
Shoutout to Gary Shider and Mike Hampton for being the 'Throbbasonic Funkgeetarists' who carried this album, the shredding on this was unreal. It is a supremely listenable album, I would wager you to find me a bad Parliament/Funkadelic album. The vibe of the album is great, slightly less goofy than Mothership Connection and I was able to gel with this much more. To be completely frank, I enjoyed side A but was pretty nonplussed. Side B was much better and the bonus tracks that came after it really confirmed this for a very strong 4/5. Fantastic album, makes me want to go back and watch the Parliament/Funkadelic episodes of Tales From The Tour Bus (a show, along with Kenny vs Spenny, that I will never stop pestering every single person I know to watch) Highlights: Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers), P.E. Squad/Doo Doo Chasers
Best Funkalbum I've ever heard!
Interesting and enjoyable funky album
Fantastic
8 I pledga allegiance to the United States of funk
Definitively wet and poppin'. The live version of 'Maggot Brain' is an utter disgusting belter.
Classic funky opener
guitarras fuedas. otimo album!!!!
Side one is a 5, with three amazing funk tracks. Side two is a 3 for me; as with many of these albums, I can see why people would like it, but I find it meh.
An album I would never hear about or listen to as I am not well versed in funk music but absolutely LOVED. Fun, energetic and different this was an amazing listen. Yes, a soul band CAN do rock music. Would love to explore more music by this band.
Not quite as tight as Maggot Brain, but the grooves are undeniable. I get it, I see the light, George Clinton is a trickster god sent to us to get funky as fuck.
Second Funkadelic album - I liked Maggot Brain better. This is a bit more of, what I call Kitsch Funk (yes a genre I have invented). It would be a 3 for enjoyment, but some songs are very good, it's great muscicianship, and an influential album. So a 4 it is.
He’ll yeah! I was familiar with funkadelic, but listening through a whole album was a rewarding experience. Those guys had vision. Long ass songs though
Certainly was funkadelic and rocking
This is a great funk album.
This album just doesn’t exist on Apple Music apparently but the song titled the same thing does?? So I just listened to that and am reviewing that as the album. Great funky song that could no doubt put a whole nation under a groove.
Groovy, great album to vibe to. Drives my mom up the wall. Overall good album.
Ok
One of those albums where its influence has spread so wide and deep that it’s hard for a modern listener to get what’s so special about it at first. It’s good though, slaps even
Snelle inhaal review #2: Ook deze staat ook weer niet op Spotify, maar was wel wat makkelijker te vinden. Aangenaam verrast, een wat funkier Maggot Brain, maar eigenlijk gaat dat ook gewoon heel hard.
Overall: 8/10 I love me some funk. Bootsy Collins on the bass makes this the funkiest album I've ever heard. George Clinton is also an underrated vocalist in my opinion, he gets a lot of praise for being the bandleader but his vocals are so groovy. I wish this was on spotify so I could save some of these songs to my playlist, but oh well. It's still so great. Fav Song: Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?! Least Fav Song: Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)
Первая песня кайф
It was good.
Only three tracks available on Spotify
174/1089 - I don't get the point of the flexatone and whistles, and animal noises in the background and that sandwich fear song went on for too long without changing, but the music is really good. I still think that Maggot Brain solo is a waste of time.
Fun & Vibey I loved
I like funk, I like Funkadelic.
Only one song to download, which is disappointing. Loved the song though
Q: How much cocaine does it take to fly the cosmofunkin Afronauts to utopian galaxy of grooves? A: Funkadelic I love this album: long jams, Hendrixy guitar, deep soulful bounce, and door (and wall) blowing songs that are about political, sexual, rocktacular freedom.
Not into funk in the slightest. But this is funktastic. 4/5 Funks.
a real treat start to finish
I didn't get to listen to all of this in order but pretty good stuff -- can't go too wrong with Funkadelic!
a hidden gem of the GCMU (george clinton music universe). might have to tussle with spotify’s shitty local files mechanism so that this album can be accessible to me all of the time.
A groovy funky album. Nice rythms. Not exactly a album to dance to but it‘s fun while driving.
Funky, chill, and proper fun.
Strangely hard to find but a great catch. Funky grooves forever and a maggot brain to blow out all the leftover blockages in your mind. The humor, groove and jams are great additions.
Good but like George Clinton more
Yeah, it’s pretty good - I’m not massively into this kind of thing but I can tell good music, and I enjoyed this. Better than Maggot Brain (which I was underwhelmed by), not as good as Mothership Connection (which I loved).
This album fucks. It is soooo groovy and catchy. I REALLY enjoyed it. The vocals are great, guitars are fun, drum beats are catchy, and the bass lines rock. Great listen!! (Had to listen on like 2 YouTube Playlists but we got there with the help of Wikipedia). "Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!" is an all-time great! Liked Songs: "One Nation Under A Groove" , "Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!" , "Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)" , "Into You" , "Cholly (Funk Getting Ready To Roll)" , "Maggot Brain / Chant (Think It Ain't Illegal Yet!) (Live)", and "Lunchmeataphobia (Think! It Ain't Illegal Yet!)"
Great…song?! Maybe Spotify is writing my reviews now and just gave me the best of this album, but I only got one, albeit pretty groovy, song from the link. My supper table dancing got a “1” from the fam, but I give this song a “4” for making me try (and making them laugh)
Hard to find the complete album. Great grooves and hits right when I’m in the mood for funk.
Really cool album that blends a lot of different genres into one cohesive work. I'll admit that I am not the most well trained ear for funk muisc, but this goes beyond just funk music. I really like the tasty groove and psych rock vibes in this one. The lead guitar has such an iconic tone and adds incredible depth to the jams included. 8/10. P.S.. Promentalshitbackwashpschosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers) has high contention for the greatest song title ive seen in my life
Funky!
Do you promise the funk? The whole funk, nothin' but the funk? Has a more important collection of questions, ever been uttered? Me thinks not. One has to wonder what an addition of Hendrix to the collective of Clinton, Bootsy and team, would look like.
I was tempted to knock this down a rating for how inaccessible this was but this was totally worth it. Highhhhh quality
This album was so hard to find but was very enjoyable!
honestly a super fun album that fuses funk with psychedelic soft rock and other ballad elements - not on spotify, but found the album on Youtube, and i really enjoy it.
Own it. Fantastic stuff.
Such a fun album. Good energy throughout
Favorite Track: One Nation Under a Groove
Groovy. Liked it a lot, first song goes hard.
Very good, again love to see how albums like these influenced
Super fun
Funkadelic/Parliament could have been the only band(s) in the entire history of funk, and hip hop would still have had enough sampling material to last for decades. Absolutely classic stuff.
Songs were long and repetitive, but also had good beats and made me want to dance. Songs had good lyrics and told stories. Funk may not be my thing but I appreciate the album
This was a great listen with headphones! It's pretty bizarre in some great ways. I don't especially enjoy the mental shit backwash. He's a little too much into the metaphor to the point that it's a little weird. I especially enjoyed the guitar playing. My favorite band is Ween. So much of the guitar work and the vibe of this really reminds me of them. Never realized before how much Ween was probably inspired by Funkadelic. Funk on & be strong with the funk all funky peoples of Funkadelica!
Funk en rock is een combinatie die veel te goed werkt. 4.2
8/10
This felt like it was missing the second oart of the album. It was lovely nonetheless=) might have been a five if it were longer
There's nothing like it. Sounds like a 30-person party. Whole album sounds like an extended outro, so it drags a bit. But extra points for creativity, and for Maggot Brain, which is up there with the best guitar solos of all time.
Pretty cool album, a little too close to psych and prog rock for me. Best song is by far the 4th one Doo Doo chasers. Loved that one, but overall I think Maggot Brain is much better. I would give this one a mid 4. Still loved it
ah da funk... wonderlijk plaatje met aanstekelijke en zappaiaanse muziek en teksten...
Funky
Before punk I was really into disco and funk music. This was quite underground where I lived but really enjoyed the album
Solid album, sucks it's not really on Spotify. Interesting instrumentals and fitting vocal work. A bit repetitive, but still enjoyable.
i need this on streaming immediately close to 4.5 i think
Not available on spotify rn so i listened to their earlier one "Standing on the verge of getting it on". And that was pretty fun. I like their busier more rock funk fusion stuff. Sometimes theyre adding some "bitches" here and "bitches" there that im like hmm idk about that part man
i blinked and my chores were finished! super groovy fun and also enjoyable to listen to, but one of those that you know is enjoyable and impressive at the same time must be the funk and nothing but the funk!
Funky!
