This was an interesting listen. Wouldn't mind exploring more.

I never listened to funk before. Great tunes, fun music.

Wild, weird, and fun with lots of great musicianship. They can really shred, too. Best song: One Nation Under a Groove

another album i had to find outside of spotify due to it not being on their platform. my rating excludes the live performance at the end (i'm generally not fond of live albums/performances) One Nation Under A Groove - 5/5 Groovallegiance - 4/5 Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?! - 4/5 Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers) - 5/5 Into You - 3/5 Cholly (Funk Getting Ready To Roll!) - 4/5 P.E. Squad/Doo Doo Chasers - 3/5 Average score - 4/5

This album wasn't on Spotify so I had to hunt it down on YouTube. I left the high energy semi-chaotic funk, didn't love the poop centric song, but overall I was jamming out.

Had to listen to it on YouTube. Always loved Funkadelic but never knew about this album before. What a treat!

One Nation Under a Groove- just one long groove to open the album Groovallegiance- bring the funk to me dammit. Bring the funk to me. Great guitar solo on here- wouldn't have minded hearing it longer Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?! -not me Promentalshitbackwqshpsychosis (Enema Squad) Into You Cholly (Funk Getting Ready to Roll)- so far, easily a four star album, but there isn't much lyrically, not that it is the point- Clinton is clearly a smart guy- that's why he wrote Funk Band, but I would love to know what he is thinking Maggot Brain/Chant- this rocks as hard as anything else from the 70s. Funkadelic was a better rock band than a lot of the stadium rock bands of the 70s. Ugh, Styx.😒 Lunchmeataphobia PE Squad/Doo Doo Chasers

Funky psychedelic rock. I liked it! 7.5/10

Unfortunately this is not on Spotify but I find it on YouTube. The quality was the greatest, so I will seek it out to hear a better mastered version because I feel I lost a lot of the nuance that is Funkadelic. I we familiar with several songs but never listened to the album as a whole before. This album is full of great music, smooth, bouncy basslines, good guitar, great rhythm, soulful and doesn’t take itself too seriously. But the unseriousness can be too much at point with repetitive goofy lines about fear of sandwiches and whatnot. The goody lines themselves aren’t necessarily bad, they make me smirk as my neck swings my head to the groove. But repeating them for 7 minutes is like a 3 year old finding a funny word and saying all afternoon long. I like Funkadelic, and the latter incarnation Parliament and don’t listen for lyrics, but sometimes it just annoying. I love the groove that they bring as well, but a 10 minute track in almost every case is uncalled for. This album that definitely belongs on this list, not because it’s a 5 star album, it’s not, but because it is so influential on not just the funk music that follows but rnb, so much rap, and even alternative rock and jam band rock. Listening to this album I could hear so many different bands and groups putting their spin on things. Good album too listen to but great album for history. 7.8/10 #40/1001

Love the funk

Great album goovy and funky and a cool mix of rock as well. I enjoyed the poop focused break in the middle.

Groove will unite us all. Crazy good energy all the way though this album. The lyrics got a bit weird in the middle but that final guitar solo saved the day.

They have one of the best bass singers

Fun funky album, which also worked as great chill background music. "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock" was the highlight for me (wish this was on Spotify) 4/5

Immaculate Grooves. Who would have guessed. 4 Stars.

I liked this funk album more than the parliament album, which after some research I really couldn’t figure out if they were some of the same people or not. This album was not strictly funk but had some rock in it and the guitar riffs were spectacular. The Doo Doo song was very offputting. Chris’s contribution is that “there were a lot of unexpected sounds I felt so silly.”

Had to listen on YouTube - there were some gaps between songs that probably aren't supposed to be there, but it was a decent version as far as I could tell, and the bonus EP tracks were included. I'm glad this project is educating me on funk! I had Parliament's Mothership Connection already (5 stars) but didn't know George Clinton was behind both of these groups: The "P-Funk" collective. So many incredible musicians were involved with these projects and I'm excited for whichever album I get next. I added the title track to my playlist since it's what's available on Spotify, but my favorite was the bonus track of the live performance, Maggot Brain/Chant (Think It Ain't Illegal Yet!). No one could ever say a funk band can't play rock after listening to that, whew! Overall this was super enjoyable - very high 4 after 2 listens.

Such a shame that this isn't (in full) on Spotify: now I had to listen to it on youtube with ads in between :(( This might be one of the funkiest things I've ever heard. Such rich musical arrangements and I was grooving along the whole time.

About time this list got funky

This album was a funky good time! I would definitely give it another listen in the future and recommend it to others! Funk music is good vibes all around.

Chaotic funk album, their influence is still alive and well 4*

Goofus banger. It’s been a quarter-century since I last listened to this one, but I could feel the anxiety that comes with attempting to be rational in an irrational world lift as the toilet humor pledge was recited.

A strong distillation of Funkadelic's melding of funk and rock. Mike Hampton picks up where Eddie Hazel left off in delivering Hendrix-like guitar virtuosity. But if this album makes the list, are we also in store for Maggot Brain or the band's excellent self-titled debut?

I was unprepared for the scatalogical track, but other than that, a great listen.

Light a joint. Find a comfy chair. Put this on.

Fav: Who Says A Funk Band Can’t Play Rock?! Least Fav: Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers) Lyrics like the one about the fear of being eaten by a sandwich are why I enjoy albums like these

This is the second Funkadelic album that I have listened to. The first was Maggot Brain, which I didn't like apart from the title track, so I wasn't looking forward to One Nation Under a Groove. Unexpectedly, it turned out to be one of the most fun albums I have ever listened to. It put a huge smile on my face.

A high 3

i am vibing with the funk!!

Funky fresh fmusic

Pretty amazing! There is almost as much rock on this album as there is funk. The bass and guitar work is outstanding.

4 stars because I got to listen to Maggot Brain again.

Very funky and fresh.

Freaking awesome!!!

Short but good

Good shi

I like this. Musically, it's really on-point. It has a really cracking opening, with real energy and grooves, and it's just a lot of fun. There's some really funky bass-lines, and I love the squealing guitars. I did find myself getting less interested in the longer tracks that became quite repetitive, otherwise I would have rated this higher. However, when it's good it's really good. 3.5 rounded up.

I listened to what seems to be the original 6 track listing, the Spotify link seems to go to a shorter version of the album Loved the first half, fun and funky and hard not to enjoy. Second half wasn't quite as engaging but still good

Byrjar ekkert sérstaklega vel. One nation under a groove er flottari titill en lag og reggaeskotið Grooveallegiance gerir ekki mjög mikið fyrir mig. En svo fer þetta í gang og er barasta ansi solid og vel það.

Wish Spotify wasn’t so weird with this album. Amazing though.

Funky 😜

Astonishing - extremely fun the whole way through including the bonus 7" with a ripping live Maggot Brain. If I could do half stars I'd give it 4.5 just to make room for other the two other best P-Funk records, the doo doo song is the closest thing to a low light on this album but it still slaps regardless.

It was rather long, but it definitely grew on me as it went on - it started off a bit "yes we get it you're great musicians are you going to do anything meaningful though?", but got more interesting as it branched out and that. Also poop song was a highlight musically and definitely lyrically.

What an album to start this off with! Not my first time hearing this but this time around it, it really clicked for me. Pure groovy funk that you just can’t help but bop along to!

An absolute banger! I loved every song on this album and it lived up to its funky nature. Even if it was hard to find, I much prefer this to Maggot Brain. Great album that more people should know about.

Great funky stuff here. I was especially into "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!" 7.5/10

Before listening: When I first got into Parliament/Funkadelic, I tried to listen while studying. It was my first encounter with music that was too dancey to work to. Ever since then I've loved the *idea* of P-Funk, but my actual listening is rare. Also I'm sour I had to play this on youtube (especially because for a few minutes I hit play on my computer which didn't recognize youtube and played Otis Redding on top of it--me: "I don't remember them being so dissonant"). Anyway, I worry that my (and this group's) having listened to this while working will impact our ability to fully appreciate it. It's not work music Okay, now I'm listening: Less bombastically funky than other of their stuff, more mellow more a fusion of rock and funk, with some great extended riffs that are just jamming. Really cool mixing in of crazy rock-style guitar solos. A little too much aimless jamming for 5 stars, but a worthy entry nonetheless.

You know, I would describe this as a good funk - in that it lifted my mood with the energy and playfulness that they brought to a bunch of their songs - but I would not describe it as great funk - in that it did not immediately make me want to start dancing.

Nice bit of funk nothing too exciting

Excellent

Side B is so much better than side A. The groove is immaculate. The lyrics are practically nonsense.

First and foremost, kudos to George Clinton himself for making this album available on his YouTube channel. Very cool move. I've heard a couple of Funkadelic songs in passing, including the title track for this album. One Nation Under a Groove flexes itself well, as George Clinton and his funk collective constructed some nasty danceable riffs and beats to illicit such blissful vibes. They even took note from the progressive rock movement in going for longer songs with multiple structures and a more aggressive edge, such as on "Groovallegiance" and "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!" Be forewarned that this album gets lyrically weird in places. I was listening to "Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)" where they sung about finding unity and taking collective action through metaphors related to eating lunch and going to the bathroom. I'm not sure what substances Clinton and company were on at the time of writing, but it does stand out. Also, I can't help but feel like giving the slight edge to Clinton's other P-funk group Parliament, as I remember enjoying Mothership Connection earlier on my journey with the more consistent space-age-themed songwriting. Still, One Nation Under a Groove was a great time and worth seeking out.

Funky! Really want something new next, though, please...

4 out of 5. Not my favorite Funkadelic album but I have yet to hear a bad one.

Big and bold and fun. More rock than I expected

🎶 Gettin' down just for the funk of it 🎶 Gotta say, this really put a smile on my face!

this is so fun and such a great culmination of the genres that preceded it. the funk + psychedelic is such a great combo. the ones that leaned more into smooth jazz were less compelling to me but i didn't dislike them. i liked hearing the periodic record scratches that foreshadow the way the genres will evolve into hip hop in the coming decades. really enjoyed this!! Fav tracks: Hit It and Quit It, (Not Just) Knee Deep

Fun and funky. Would listen to it again if it was on Spotify, but oh well. Still enjoyed it even with the youtube ads.

nice groovy funk the 2015 remaster has a live version of Maggot Brain !

Great tunes, would have loved some shorter songs but great tunes

whoooo says a funk band can’t play rock music?

bangers

In my highest of highs I never would have been able to come up with something like Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad. These cats are from another plane of existence. Maggot Brain also continues to be one of the greatest instrumental works of that decade.

I never said a funk band can't play rock. Why would I?

I love funk albums and this one was kinda psychedelic which was cool. Wish it was on Spotify in its entirety!

8/10. I love the combination of rock and funk music. This is a really enticing listen!!! :)

I prefer the slightly more minimal earlier albums but it's Funkadelic!

Title track is an all-time best bop, alongside several other very good ones. Potent analgesic for the Monday morning commute.

нормалек.

Given the state of the world and politics right now, I believe that thinking has indeed become illegal.

It's got everything you could possibly expect from a Funkadelic album. Which is to say that it is, indeed, funky. It's fine as fun party music, but doesn't hit on all cylinders like their album "Maggot Brain" does. Bandleader George Clinton keeps it between the lines (insert cocaine joke here), adding bits of Rock here and there. In the end, though, there just isn't enough variety to push this one into five-star territory.

Yup (4)

This is quite the trip, and it was an incredible journey, where people have the fear of being eaten by a sandwich and where fried ice cream is a reality! Liked Songs Added: Groovalegiance

Who says a funk band can't play rock? Funkadelic certainly can, and they sure as hell can play funk too.

C'est funky, c'est rigolo, tout est pas parfait mais c'est quand même très cool.

Loved this one, a lot of great guitar work, funky rhythms but also spacey and psychedelic at the same time; George Clinton rules. All the tracks are fun even though the song selection does feel like it lacks a little cohesiveness as an album, especially the bonus EP sides. Standouts for me were Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock? and the title track.

Nice mix of funk and rock

According to Wikipedia, the first six songs of the version we found on YouTube were the original LP, and the last two songs were part of a three-song “bonus EP” that came with the record. No word on that third song. Anyway, if it were just the first six songs, probably a 3 for me. They’re all fine. I especially have fond memories of Ice Cube’s “Bop Gun,” which heavily samples “one nation under a groove” and was a staple of high school cross country. But a little long, a little repetitive. But those last two songs, wow. Huge fan. Especially the final one, which sounds like a funk “Cortez the killer.” They were enough to boost this to four.

The funkiest.

Funky funk for the funky bunch. Hard not to groove along to this. And why would you even try not to?

I had to find this album on YouTube to listen to it, so I’m hoping I didn’t miss much. I think I got the main part of the album. The little bonus EP, though, I’m not 100%. The times weren’t very accurate there. And honestly, it was a little forgettable. It didn’t have much of the steam from the main tracks. So I don’t really consider them part of this. Honestly, a funk album that isn’t on streaming and runs for about a hour sounds like a terrible time for me personally. A lot of the tracks have long times and somewhat rely on repetition. But believe it or not, I really dug this. There is a nice variety in the tracks so that the songs sound different. Groovalligence has a slight reggae influence and Who Says a Funk Band Can’t Play Rock convinces me that they can indeed play rock and play it well. And the funk itself is great too. If it weren’t for the EP, this would be a perfect package. And maybe it wouldn’t hurt to put this on Spotify or something. Favorite track: Who Says A Funk Band Can’t Play Rock Other hits: One Nation Under A Groove, Groovalligence, Into You

Funky as hell! I almost considered ordering a CD of this since it's not on streaming services for whatever stupid corporate or legal reason. I mean, it was Funkadelic's most commercially successful album! That kind of acclaim should make it a priority to stream for people. Whatever. Some of the tracks, particularly the slower ones or the rock-ish ones, didn't hit for me as much as the upbeat funk. Still, killer album. Must listen #71.

Gostei

gotta f***** find this album on youtube to listen to it. actually listening to some japanese ripped FLAC files Lovin these basslines standouts: Who says a funk band Into You Liked it. 4

Unfortunately, the album was only available as an incomplete extended version and as a remix of one track from my streaming provider. So I couldn't get a complete picture of it. I liked what I heard. I want to listen to more Funkadelic, but unfortunately I can't rate the album completely. 4/5

Enjoyed this. Time will tell if it is really worthy of a place on this list.

Can’t beat a bit of George :)

One of the first albums I listened to for this project was Clinton's "Maggot Brain." Upon hearing the first track that gave the album it's name, my brain melted. Now we get more George Clinton and my brain is still melting. Amazing!

1 funking me up fr 2 has a great instrumental around 13 minutes in groovy bass 3 is hot, stinky and groovy 4 fucking slaps omg

Disco and prog inflected funk from some of the best players of the 70s should be an instant five but unfortunately this album melts too far into the background for a band full of big, iconoclastic personalities. As promised the title track unites nations under a very groovy and fully fleshed out rythym section. Worrell's synthesizer flourishes add an edge to what is otherwise a very laid back track. Groovallegience invented calypso funk. Not necessarily surprised it didn't go any further than this song but the Belafonte indulgences are redeemed by some excellent bass and drum breaks. Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock? rocks with the confidence of the only bandleader ready to inherit Hendrix's legacy. The Doo Doo song would be a great interlude in a live performance but definitely drags a bit on the album. The album starts to drag after the highs of One Nation. Into You improves things by combining classic blues with some highly technical bass grooves from Collins and a wonderful baritone from Clinton. Cholly reprises the disco themes of One Nation Under a Groove and is a great little low-key tracks. One of my favourite things in a Funkedelic track are the murmurs and chattering that are woven through the backing vocals, they give every recording a wonderful 'playing in the backyard' feel and are in full effect in this song. Lunchmeatophobia goes hard and almost extends into Sabbath territory. P.E Squad (a reprise of the Doo Doo song) and the live version of Maggot Brain weren't really necessary. As you would expect there is lots of brilliant weirdness and crazy ideas that threaten to fall off the brink. The prog-influences are apparent with some of the breaks getting a bit noodly and song-lengths that will have you muttering 'feet don't fail me now'. If they'd taken a razor to the songs and maybe chosen some shorter cuts this would be an instant five.

Jammy, Funky, Rocking!

Not quite the same music I listened to, but I liked it, listen to something new. I definitely recommend this album.

So groovy so funky yeaghhhh

Now Who Says a Funk Band Can’t Play Rock??

Super weird and fun. Not what I was in the mood for but it made me enjoy it anyhow.

Undeniably both funky and groovy, with the most unapologeticly farty bass sound.

Good stuff and seminal title track. Although after almost 10 years across two Bands I think the P-Funk sound was starting to Run out of a little bit of steam by this point.

this was an amazing album to work to, had me grooving in my seat. That said, not the most perfect album, as I did skip a couple of songs when they started to sound samey gave me listening fatigue. 4/5

had a great listening, gospel and punk at the best

Funkadelic getting down just for the fun(k) of it! One Nation Under A Groove is one funky, fun, and well crafted album. Songs run a bit long, lyrics are a bit weird, horns / drums are good, and guitar work is great. Didn’t know these funksters in ‘78, but know ‘em from the recent listen of Maggot Brain and like ‘em even more after this one. (3.9*s) Fried ice cream is a real thing. I’ve never had one so I’m gettin’ one next time I attend a county fair…

Found this one on YouTube. When it hits, it hits hard! Bells, synths, and funky bass lines. This was my second Funkadelic album after Maggot Brain, and I enjoyed it more. I can think of a million r&b cuts that owe their life to this album, at least spiritually.

I realize that it's the most commercially successful album they had, but it's not the best or the grooviest. Still a good intro to their sound.

Apparently I like the P of the P-Funk better. Funkadelic was a little too guitar heavy for me. I prefer the bass driven grooves from George, the Star Child Bootys Colins, and the rest of the Parliament stars from the Mothership. "Hey Baby Bubba"

A chill non-traditional funk album. Less dance tunes and more abstract art. I think I'd give this album a 3.5 but decimals aren't an option so I'm going to round it up to 4.

Possibly their best album, takes the best parts of their normal sound with the exploration of maggot brain. A

Possibly their best album, takes the best parts of their normal sound with the exploration of maggot brain. A

Album #1 - 3.5/5 I've never really listened to funk/psychedelic, so I wasn't sure what to expect, and also don't have much to compare it to. Overall, really enjoyed! I'd give the instrumentals alone a 4.5/5, but the vocals/lyrics brought down the overall rating for me. Standout songs that I really liked were "One Nation Under a Groove," & "Cholly (Funk Getting Ready to Roll!)" Also a huge fan of the instrumental/jam "P.E. Squad/Doo Doo Chasers" - this would definitely go in my regular rotation if it was on Spotify. Wacky lyrics throughout kind of took me out of the enjoyment. I'm all for silly-goofy, but a 10-minute song about poop ("Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad") was a bit much for me (though I'm now obsessed with the concept of sandwichphobia?) Too bad it isn't on Spotify, that probably would've improved my listening experience. Listening to the full album on youtube meant it was hard to tell when one song ended and the next started, plus ads. It's also confusing that there are multiple versions of this album (and a few of the songs) so I'm not completely sure what I listened to. This album makes me want to do more research & listening into Funkadelic, Parliment, & George Clinton! It's an entire universe of music I know nothing about!

Another banger from Funkadelic. So weird, so funky, so fun. With the inability to stream this album, I forgot how amazing Who Says a Funk Band is, absolutely love that tune. Funkadelic again proving why they were such an undeniable force in the funk genre.

Only the one tune is on Spotify for some reason. Love Funkadelic though…

Some of the songs were pretty good but the others were weird and I didn't really understand them. Overall fun experience though.

phonky

Dumb album isn't on Spotify, starting it on Youtube to see if it's worth listening all the way through. Actually pretty sweet to be honest. So far it's two funk songs about funk. Yeah this is rad, bummer it's not on Spotify. Pretty awesome musicianship, obviously groovy as shit. Yeah that was a good album, I really liked it.

I'm not a particularly funky person but I enjoyed this -esp the title track. Side B gets a bit loose but still enjoyed it.

Специфический фанк, местами с очень прикольным звучанием и приятной мелодией. Ударник играет очень по-современному. Возможно, семплы для рэперов взяты из треков этого альбома.

Only listened to the title song because the album isn’t on DAMN Spotify but the one song is great.

I could tell from the first song that this was something special. 4.4.

Funkadelic don't miss

Somehow I missed this album while stuck in a space time Continuum. I won't let this happen again! Feet don't fail me now, ha! First song I wanted to be rolling down the street in my skates grooving to the best with big sunglasses on and my dancers behind me following along. 😜🥳 🛼 🕶️ Love the artwork Can't beat nudity and comic strips fused together Track 2 lacked the energy that I expected and had a strange off beat mess of a production. Track 3 back to the funkadelly extreme that I expected. Can't understand what the fuck they're saying but I love it. Great psycho evil sounding guitar pedal steel. Track 4 was a bunch of drunk & disorderly spoken word stuff. Annoying...my God was it too long! Lol that's what she said! 🤣 Track 5-talking neutron bomb people! Can't take the lead singer on this one seriously but it's fun. Track 6 has a nice beat the kids can dance to. Track 7 had a Neil Young/crazyhorse raunchy guitar and I loved it Track 8 started with a bunch of yelling. But it got better, with some starsky and hutch '70s cop show music. More comic strip porn artwork. My mother wouldn't approve of. Last track more of the same Going 4 here because they dare to be different.

I like the funk.

Enjoyed this but only 3 songs.

Some good genre funk - not a great album. It a good example of the genre. On the fence about it - but since I enjoyed listening to it I feel it passes.

Found on YouTube. I was never in doubt regarding the funkadelic content, so here's what caught my interest: the complete failure of the YT ad engine. Yikes! Don't they have some AI or something over at Google? Here's the list: - corporate document management - dog food - HPV meds - Disney - moderate to severe plaque psoriasis meds - Hilton - Olay body wash - dog food - Disney - bent finger meds - ancestry.com - eye drops And finally, back to the jams, there's soaring rock ballad guitar to finish this record - a nice feat on the back of the funks.

Banger

A highly enjoyable listen with infectious funk throughout. Vibrant and full of energy.

This is funk. This is the sound my mind goes to when I hear someone mention funk music. There’s just so much going on instrumentally that it shouldn’t work but it does. There’s instruments that I don’t think I’ve heard before that mesh well. It’s like birds chirping through a fan and another sound like farting through a megaphone….to name a few new sounds. All in all though, the band is a deep dive band but you have to be ok with the sound. I wouldn’t have called myself a “funk” guy but I explored all these guys had to offer and I was thoroughly impressed. Not that that will influence anyone reading this. I’d be lucky to get 1 like on this review. To sum it up, if you like funk and less confusing Frank Zappa music, here you go.

At the height of disco, this album was released. I detect a bit of disco here, but overall excellent funk music.

Loved this one. Made me happy, and totally confident that i was made to dance and enjoy the Funk. Wonderful commentary for today, and not just a glimpse at the past

Was not able to hear all of the album. Loved what I managed to hear on YouTube. Did not have album on Spotify. *pouty face*. Loved what I heard. Ready to hang out at the party! Want to rate a 5 but will only rate a 4 since, I can’t really determine the whole of the album.

Funk with a big dose of strange, yet tamer than expected.

I feel funkalicious

A pretty good and groovy album. The doo doo song was a bit too long and tedious for my taste... Relistened and actually loved "Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)" - the juxtaposition of the filthy chaotic chanting and the beautiful melodic and hypnotic guitars and vocals is cool, and I like that they take turns going up and down in the mix. Fun album overall though some songs stood out a bit less than others. (4/5)

Really good album. Rhythm and instrumentals are creative and well executed. I’m not usually a fan but this is an exception.

gostei

It’s a stone cold classic. Although strictly speaking I’m more of a Parliament man

Groovy with some great rock guitar. I'd love this on vinyl so adding to my wishlist! 4.5

An absolute culmination. So many ideas - all funky with a touch of nasty. Stellar musicianship abounds and allow grooves to truly fly.

Really like the mix, very enjoyable to listen to. Feels like the songs could've either done with being a minute shorter or had something extra to fill the run time, but had fun listening regardless

This was a fun listen. I had to listen on YouTube so not sure about specific tracks. There was one where he was talking nonsense and about doo doo for a while that was quite hilarious. I’ll have to go back and find that for some quotes I can adopt into my vernacular. I was leaning towards a 3.5 but that jam at the end was amazing. I was half listening while I worked and then it caught my ear and I was like “gawd damn!” Rounding up for that. 3.5

I enjoyed this quite a bit. Shame it’s not widely available streaming outside of YouTube. The ads def mess with the vibes but still a solid album. 3.74/5

Awesome musicianship with lots of character, plenty of funk and character, love the blend of funk and rock

Simply great. Long songs with lyrics about poop over some of the funkiest instrumentation you’ve ever heard. The live version of Maggot Brain was really cool. This is definitely one I would want to buy on vinyl some day.

I like this a lot. Great guitar work, free minds - this is the good stuff I was looking for when I was younger but missed this entirely - I knew of George Clinton and funkadelic but had no idea it was this. Maggot brain live which was released alongside this album on an EP is all time great material. Will be checking out a lot more of funkadelic!

Not as good as Maggot Brain, but very few is

Very funky, I enjoyed

I remember a few friends of mine played stuff like this for us at parties when I was younger, and it's like I'm back there again. This is a lot of fun to listen to.

Fantastic album, great textures, very psychedelic

I love funk music and how different it is from all other genres, and Funkadelic knew exactly what to do. So much funk, yet so smooth. One Nation Under a Groove was so good I had no problem hitting repeat and even listening to the bonus tracks again. I had to laugh at the line "Which one is George Clinton?" from "Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)" because, yeah, this album was definitely George Clinton's brain child. I love that kind of meta acknowledgement. What I couldn't stop thinking about is how much Prince took from funk artists like Funkadelic. Prince touched on so many genres, but he doesn't get enough recognition with funk. At times, I could have been convinced this was a Prince record! Like, there was even a song that had Prince's signature scream. With me being such a Prince fan, I enjoyed hearing where some of Prince's inspiration came from.

I won't lie, I was definitely hesitant about this album. Not being able to find an album on streaming services and song titles that are nonsensical and look like they were conceptualized on the worst kind of acid trips usually don't bode well. I mean, who can even blame me for seeing the title "Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis / Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)" and assuming the absolute worst? But I'll be damned, this is one of THE best funk albums I have ever listened to. Don't get me wrong, it was still very bizarre in places. But this album caused me to think: like a lot of music genres, the spirit of "funk" isn't just in the music itself. It's in the song titles, the lyrics, the delivery. Yes, the song titles and lyrics here are absolutely bonkers, but THAT is funk. And it certainly helps that the music here is absolutely killer; again, it's among the best funk I've heard. The winning combination of all these things make this a tough album to put down, and an easy album to embrace for its pure weirdness.

Funkadelic is just fun to listen to. This band is super tight, yet so funky and smooth - it’s kind of amazing.

Sure is funky. I love the play on words and certainly dig the grooves. Fave: Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock?

Do you promise to funk? This album was fun! I found myself grooving to the whole album. Never did I think to skip a song. 4/5

Wonderful. Layers, texture. Absolutely going on several of my playlists.

Had never listened to a full album by them but fair to say, no Funkadelic, no Prince so far that reason alone they should get a good rating, a lot of high pitch screams and bass lines that the wee man has definitely ripped off, no bad thing

I've decided that I need more Funkadelic in my life.

Never heard of this band, really kinda enjoyed it.

This was way better than I expected, I didn't realize this was the Funkadelic of the Parliament duo. The album is fun, funny, groovy and full of songs that keep your interest. The definition of funk. I want to listen to more.

They brought the funk

Weird funk. I liked it but maggot brain got boring

Cool and iconic, but I was ready for it to end.

Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Solid 4. I don't quite connect to it enough to rate it a 5, but what's not too like? A very enjoyable listen...it's just fun!

Hell yeah.

OG Funk.

instrumental version is better

This was definitely a fun album. I hadn’t listened to Funkadelic until now, but I have to say I really enjoyed the psychedelic elements and the way the synths add to the overall feel of the music.

I love funk and I definitely do not listen to it enough. This album is amazing and I agree that it belongs on this list. I wish it was available on spotify, but I will check out their other music as well and add that to my playlists.

Wild and unhinged! Cutting edge stuff

Love it 4/5

Also didn't get to this til now since it's not on Spotify. This is the same guy whos on Wesley's theory. I love that song. Def would have to be in the mood to listen to this album but it's a vibe.

This was really good. Sucks that it’s not on Spotify

Hard time listening to it due to not being on Spotify, Apple Music etc. listened to a couple tracks on YouTube

While One Nation Under A Groove might be the worst of all the Funkadelic/Parliament albums i have looked at, That still doesn't mean its not great. This album was still an immensely fun and funky ride throughout the whole thing. There were quite a bit of the rock elements that i came to know from these two acts and they were handled greatly here. The vocals were also outstanding just adding to the already funky nature of this album. Some of the songs could get a little bit repetitive with their long lengths and all but the best parts of the album more than made up for it. This album still shows why i love Funkadelic/Parliament so much. Best Song: Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock?! Worst Song: Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)

Thoughts before listening: Everything I have ever heard from Funkadelic has been great so I have no reason to think this won't be the same. I'm sure I'll recognize half of these songs from 90s rap backing tracks. Review: This one isn't on Spotify for some reason, but I found it on YouTube. This is definitely the classic Funkadelic sound, and I love it. Funk mixed with a rock n roll edge with guitar solos throughout. 4-stars

Great Album, Still think Maggot Brain is better but still a great orchestration of music.

Funk meets Rock. Not as bad as expected. Solid album.

Couldnt find album

really enjoyed this. need to get it on vinyl since streaming services don’t have it for whatever reason

Sweet and sour bowl movements. A mental, musical bowl movement. Psychological turd remover. A fun and silly funk fusion album. Not serious, just about the vibe. Not on Spotify right now, so no standouts to list, but it was a good listen and that last song before the outro was awesome. Pink Floyd kind of song.

The opening track kind of starts in the middle and then stays there for a long time before fading out, but by halfway through the second I was into it.

This is great, but it's not as good as Maggot Brain was and it's starting to feel just a tiny bit tired.

Like most of P-Funk's portfolio, this is some fantastic funk. It's honestly kind of hard to even call this a funk album, though (in a good way). The band's prog and rock influences really shine through on several songs. An easy 4/5, just not as quite good as other P-Funk offerings.

Funky as hell

Really funky, really enjoyed it. Mad lyrics too

Strong blues background, mixed with bits of raggae and soul. Fried ice cream is a reality.

Something different unique to hear would love to revisit again

Pretty good!

Perfect funk album. Great grooves, nice feel, just funky and fun. The lyrics and vocals can get a little tiresome, but the album was short enough that I didn't mind much, and the groove made up for it. Four stars.

Middle of the pack as far as 70's P-Funk projects go, but that just shows you how amazing they were. 4 fried ice creams out of 5

There are some good, accessible grooves on here and then there is some stuff that is a little out there (which you might expect if you're familiar with the band). If you can get acclimated, this is a pleasing trip.

Funky! Was going to give it a 3 until Maggot Brain... holy moly! 4/5

Maggot Brain saves this from a lower score

This album was fun, but a bit intense. Definitely a pick me up though, compared to some of the boring albums in the mix

Danceable 👍 but it's a constant energy like that, no breathing room, no real build up.

One Nation Under A Groove is the best album we've had in weeks. It's brilliantly fun funk, disco, good times, great guitar, quality bass, iconic and lasting. Only reason I'm not giving it a 5 is because it's a bit too long and suffers somewhat for it, but it's so creative and vibrant that you can't help but smile and groove along. A strong 4.

This was great - maybe not quite as good an album as the Parliament one we had at the beginning of the run, but not far off.  Don't quite need a whole hour of this, but it's generally really fun, catchy in places, soulful in others, but a great energy the whole way through. 4/5.

Short but sweet! Good fun

Surprisingly hard to find, but definitely worth the trouble. Even after listening to this, I think I'm still slightly more partial to Parliament, but I greatly preferred this to Maggot Brain. Really solid album. I'll probably return to this.

FUnky to the funk

als ik het eerste nummer af moet gaan, dan erg goed

One Nation Under a Groove The world is a toll free toilet Our mouths neurological assholes And psychologically speaking We're in a state of mental diarrhea Talking shit a mile a minute 💩💩💩💩 Playlist submission: Cholly (Funk Getting Ready To Roll!)

Absolutely relentless and a great time

Well this was a tough one to find. I had to resort to a youtube playlist. Musically this is great, interesting and diverse in sound. Lyrically, well they must have been higher than giraffe pussy when writing lines like "The fear of being eaten by a sandwich"

Not on spotify or apple music :\ Youtube ftw. Favorite track: Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock? other picks: One Nation Under a Groove, Cholly

One Nation Under a Groove

I've only listened to it a single time, but this was pretty nice. Some tracks I can do without, some genuine bangers (especially the title track), and a great rendition of Maggot Brain in the end. I would place 3.5 on it if I could, but since this site only allows five stars, I'll round it up to four (and will do that with others albums from here).

This is a really good album. They effortlessly find grooves I never tire of. And their musicianship is off the charts. They can be a little weird, but it does not detract from the listening experience. 4/5

That was fun!

A very funky and energetic album

If you took a drink for every time they say “funk” you would be fucking dead. 4/5

Decent enough album.... Maggot brain is a contender for the guitar solo of the century

Not available on Spotify.

Hard to find this album. A fresh sound, enjoyable vibes. I'm always in for funk. 4* because a couple of meh tracks.

Funkadelic 🤩🤩🤩

8/10 Cracking. I love genre straddling and defying stuff like this A really talented group of musicians doing their thing. Vocals, music all great Some of the rock stuff sounds like Pink Floyd but better to me - more soul in the long guitar solo on the live track One negative is that this seemed about this vibes rather than lyrical depth Best: Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)

it was funky and a great listen

It’s a party!!

Drunk on Funk. (That said, "Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)", fitting with its prolix title and lyrics references to shit and bowels, is basically just psychedelic verbal diarrhea.)

Love it! It doesn't get much funkier, but they rock out more than I have heard on other albums.

Very fun. You can tell the band is enjoying themselves. I don't think I've ever heard prog funk before. I can see this getting stuck in my head very easily.

Amazing! Funky! Fun!

First guess, 3 stars. But after hearing: "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!" I put an additional one especially for this song :-)

Totally funky music. The guitar is screaming!

i honestly don't know what i was expecting from this one, but it was soooo much better than that.

Interesting album. Compared to some other Funkadelic/Parliament albums this one was toned down (for them at least) and had some really good psychedelic guitar work. The bass and groove are as good as always. 4/5 Will listen again

Half of this album made me feel like I was playing Toejam & Earl, the other half melted my face off

This is great. Clinton at his best, straying from funk to rock and back. Love it. Some songs can drag a little though.

FUNky!

The rare album on this list that has the guts to be funny while also being genuinely great. The singing varies from solid rock-soul to whatever the heck is going on in tracks like Groovalegiance. The high-pitched wailing coupled with a tight funk arrangement is almost too much to handle. It's terrible, brilliant, and ridiculous, all at once. I wasn't even listening to it closely, but I was still head-bopping and toe-tapping for nearly the whole hour. The interacting vocals, littering of little flourishy noises in the mix, Latin American sounding percussion, and a slick guitar-bass combo work together pretty well. The percussion could be a little more interesting. There are some things that knock it down a little. It strays away from typical funk, which is definitely easier listening than whatever this is. The backing vocals are, unusually, kind of messy. The mixing is fine, but during most of the tracks I was thinking, "This would be incredible with some better stereo mixing." 4/5 Key tracks: One Nation Under A Groove, Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock, Cholly, P.E. Squad

Funky! And way too short!

Nice, I liked this!

Fried Ice Cream is a reality!

Groovellegiance, Doo Doo Chasers, some good shit on here! See what I did th. But while looking for this album, I passed "Maggot Brain" and in comparison, 'One Nation Under A Groove' wait for it stinks a bit. (Still, I'll put this on the list of Vinyl Records To Own)

Funky fresh!

Having a little familiarity with this band and always having an appreciation albeit not much knowledge with funk as a genre, I was stoked for this listen. And Funkadelic did not disappoint, starting off at 100 mph with "One Nation Under A Groove", "Groovallegiance", and "Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!", admittedly the latter not as good to me as the two former despite rock being my preferred genre. The track "Into You" was reminiscent to me of a local Indy band more active in the 90s called Dog Talk, who blended jazz, funk, rock, and big band much like Funkadelic does on this record. The live version of "Maggot Brain" was mostly guitar solo that melted my brain start to finish - really top-tier stuff. And the last track that made an impression was "Lunchmeataphobia (Think! It Ain't Illegal Yet!)" because honestly it was much heavier of a rock track than WSaFBCPR from previously in the album. I found myself tapping my feet and bobbing my head during 90% of this album, which is exactly what Funkadelic sets out to do here. The quintessential funk band and sound for my money, and this record was a great way to kick off a Friday. 8/10

From Wikipedia: According to Tom Vickers, who served as Minister of Information for Parliament-Funkadelic from 1976 to 1980, during an impromptu performance in front of the United Nations, a woman who accompanied George Clinton to the event witnessed a U.N worker hoisting the flags in front of the building. When Clinton asked the woman what she thought, she replied, "One Nation Under a Groove".

So groovy, very short. 8/10.

A really cool range here. It clearly shines in its funkiest, dance-floor ready moments but it takes you to some wild, trippy, psychedelic places.

This was a difficult album to review as it wasn't on my streaming service, so I had to listen to the whole album in one long YouTube video. However, what it did highlight was how the songs were engaging and sounded good even jumping right into the middle of one. The songs are long, but not in a droning way, like it's a ride with different discoveries along the way. Many goofy and poignant and psychedelic references throughout the lyrics. An interesting album if you're not in a rush and just looking to jam.

What can I say that hasn't been said? One of the funk classics. If it sounds stale to new ears, it is only because so many bands borrowed elements of this record as inspiration for their own voyages in funk. It has been estimated that at least 100 well known artists, including luminaries such as Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Queen Latifah, D'Angelo, and Janet Jackson have sampled the title track on the album, "One Nation Under a Groove". I had to listen to this album on YouTube as it was no available on my streaming service. If it had been available I would have added "One Nation Under a Groove" and "Into You" to my library. "Promentalwashbackpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)" was one of the few tracks on this album that never really worked for me.

This band is just a party. I enjoyed all the tracks

Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock? Not me :) The first 40 minutes are a right old mix of funk psychedelia and craziness (a sermon about a deadly sandwich?) Echoes of Pink Floyd give a hint of where it's heading so I listened to the last 20 minutes lying in dark. Wow, it's fantastic! Like Dark Side of The Moon plus Jimi Hendrix. Earned the album another star as the last section is XXXXX. I will definitely listen to this again and it certainly deserves to be in the top 1001.

Funk really isn’t my thing, but I can see why people enjoy it. This is a pretty approachable example of the style, with tracks that should also appeal to soul and rock fans.

This slapped.

Maybe a hair below 4, but some good funky grooves on this album.

Very cool stuff but a few of the songs near the end were just too repetitive.

Great album. Would have been 5 stars if it wasnt for that 10+ minute section about shit and poop.

groovy

Overall pretty good. Very funky. The guitar is wonderful. However, now it is time for a mini rant. I HATE STREAMING SERVICES. I HATE HOW WHOLE ALBUMS CAN JUST DISAPPEAR LEAVING ME TO LISTEN TO A REUPLOAD ON YOUTUBE RAAAAAHHHH. Thank you for bearing with me. 8/10 Would I listen again? I would IF IT WAS ON ANY STREAMING SERVICE.

I feel like my listening experience to this was like most people's experiences listening to jazz

I'd love to light up a huge blunt with George Clinton. This one can take you places. Really into it.

Half of the songs are "funk" double entendres, the other half are about playing funk music, and the 10% of the 110% is the supercalifragelisticexpitalipsycidelicbootyliscious word play weirdo george p ramblings. Pretty fucking tight. Amazing guitar by kid funkadelic. Fun beats, fun call and response, silly ass but fun lyrics

Pretty great funkadelic record. Maybe 4.5 but the ads ruined it a bit. Fav part we’re the songs with the chromatic riff/motif

So fun. Repetition can be good in the right genre

Love Funkadelic.

Well that was FUNKY as hell. 4.5/5

Funkadelic has always been exciting and controversial, and this album was no different.

Only listened to the title track, why isn’t this on Spotify?

George Clinton really just says whatever he wants

This album was fun. I had to listen on youtube so I'm trusting that the playlist was accurate. The songs had a variety of sounds and I enjoyed the lyrics. You truly can insert the word 'funk' into almost anything. I probably wouldn't seek this album out but I did like it. 7/10

So good. Except ‘promentalshit…’ really rug-pulled the rest of the album. I have heard some Funkadelic before but none of these. Accessibility hurts this one; as good as it is, should be on streaming platforms. 4/5

Interesting that this is the first album in 100+ I've come across that was taken off Spotify. But it's another banger from Funkadelic. Some of it is a little silly, sure, but it's not often you find this kind of mix of great music that is not meant to be take seriously. As always with pretty much anything George Clinton related, the musicianship is what really stands out here. Just fantastic playing all around. Maggot Brain, as always, is a treat. Absolutely one of the best instrumentals of all time. 4.5/5 but rounding down to 4 because of the ridiculous album cover that looks like something I drew in 3rd grade.

What really stands out to me now that I completely missed 45+ years ago is how much this album rocks. The guitar work is fantastic. https://open.substack.com/pub/richcain/p/project-1001-one-nation-under-a-groove?r=4ztyq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

So good, what a shame it’s not on spotify

Excellent Album. Not quite my groove, but worthy of 4 stars...

Funkadelia Smith.

It's funky and it rocks. I dig it's message of peace, the grooves are irresistible and the musicianship (particularly the live version of Maggot Brain!) is amazing. Maybe it gets a bit too much at times, but for the most part it's great.

You cannot find it to listen to it anywhere on line. I selected specific songs and it sounds like it would be a good album (for once!!!)

Pretty groovy.

Funk masterpiece

They really like to say the word funk. This is close to a 5 but something I'm not sure of is holding it back. Maybe if some of the songs were a little shorter/tighter/not as repetitive it would have clicked a little more. However, this album has a lot of really great bass parts, and I will definitely check out some other albums by them.

Overall great, especially the guitar songs.

Totally wild album. It's funky yes, but it's spacey, constantly changing, strange sounds, spoken words in the back ground, crazy synths. It's a fun time and enjoyed it. Unfortunately not available on Apple Music so I had to listen on YT which sort of degrades the experience not knowing the active track. Still recommended!

This is an absolutely fantastic album

Not my favourite George Clinton album - may not even make the top five - but look, it's still four stars. This whips ass.

I kind of love Pfunk, Funkadelic and all of that scene. It was incredibly influential on some great pop but is great in itself. I don't mind the prog funk approach to songs and very happily get into the groove here.

love the unique blend of genres, definitely a great album, didn't settle enough with me for it to be a 5/5 though

Who says a jazz band can't play dance music? Who says a rock band can't play funky? Who says a funk band can't play rock? Dit album is een samenkomst van funk/psychedelische rock, en soms aardig dansbare muziek. De titelsong van dit album pakt me meteen. One nation under a grooooove. Zo catchy. Echt een ontdekking. Highlights: Who says a funk band can't play rock? Maggot Brain, One Nation Under A Groove. Rating: 6/10. Deels omdat het ook niet geheel op spotify te vinden is :(

Ermmmm it's not on spotify!

Super funky. Unfortunate that it's so limited in availability.

So unbelievably funky

It's a funkadelic album. Not my favorite, but it still has that creamy funk sound that I keep coming back for 4/5

Great guitar

It's hard to dislike Funkadelic--they are a genre defining band, and beyond that, they're just great fun to listen to. One Nation Under A Groove sounds a little more disco than their earlier albums, and I prefer the more pyschedelic side of the band. Of course, this album does include the incredible "Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis", "Who Says A Funk Band Can't Rock?!" and the title track--all are sick bangers. If you like this album, look back in their catalog as well as more recent stuff and see what you like. There's a rich body of work to discover.

I could totally see prince and Jimmy Hendrix in this album. They would’ve loved to of played a studio musicians I think on this enjoy the fun edge to all the trucks.

Couldn’t find all of this
