Reviews (page 7 of 11)
I don’t know anything about this band or record. But I’ll “get down just for the funk of it.” I don’t know this for certain but there have to be people in this band who played with the Talking Heads in the 80s. Yep. Just looked it up. Bernie Worrell. Synth player on Stop Making Sense. This is probably less conducive to listening while working because it deserves to be played loud at 2:30 am, when you’ve really decided to make a real night of it… Highlights: One Nation Under a Groove; the title “Maggot Brain.”

Fried Ice Cream is a reality!
Nice songs!!
Funkeyh
Said funk way too much
Absolute banger. Legitimate album to listen to before you die - not just for itself but also for everything else that came after: No G Funk, Daisy Age hip hop or Neptunes prosecutions without this band. And it’s just so damn funky - impossible to stay still when listening to this. There are a few tracks that overstay their welcome ("Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)"). But overall an absolute classic.
Gotta have that funk
Ooh I like a bit of funk!!
Just a collection of bangers.
Creative, irreverent & topical.
Good funk rock. Pity about the dross that is "Promental..."
I used to have the title track of this album on a couple of playlists years ago, but never heard much more by Funkadelic. I still absolutely love the title track and there were also some more good parts on this album, especially Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock and the live track Maggot Brain which both have some sick guitars. It's not the kind of music I want to listen to for too long in one go or particularly often. But for every once in a while it's pretty good.
I sometimes eat mice.
I really like this. Funky, interesting and a lot like maggot brain.
Excellent
Da passiert einfach so viel!
It's very clear how much this album influenced many modern songs. This is not exactly my preferred music style, but it's very easy to understand why this is a complete classic.
I like George Clinton I like Parliament I like Funkadelic But I'm still waiting for George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic https://youtu.be/vdj5Ts8asdQ
Classic
Hard to find
Funky and fun and impossible to resist dancing to. Maggot Brain came earlier in this project and this isn't as awesome as that album, but is still a great listen. These guys, despite being the epitome of the 70s, never sound dated, and give everything they have on every track.
I guess I’m supposed to love this. I really like funk and this is one for the most famous, seminal fuck albums of all time. I kind of liked it but it honestly just doesn’t grab me.
I really liked Maggot Brain, and was excited for this one. I was disappointed that 1) It wasn't available on Apple Music (no fault on the band) 2) it felt pretty unfocused. While there are some good grooves, there wasn't anything as immediate as Maggot Brain. Important band, but not sure I'll revisit.
Maggot Brain é melhor que esse álbum
This grooves!! Classic Funkadelic finding their groove and keeping it going for 5-10 minutes while random singing and guitars play over top of it. The guitar solos were FANTASTIC. I loved how almost every song the RHYTHM was practically the/a guitar solo. I loved the grooves. However it just didnt have the staying power for me. It felt a little too cleaned up / mainstream, almost Marvin Gaye for me at times. I liked their rougher more rockin stuff. None of the songs wowed me or got stuck in my head.
A fun listen. Good for a change of pace. Feel like i should break out the roller blades and head to Skate A Way
2026.07.07-08.
Aptly named band, aptly named album.
I woke up feeling funky and low and behold George motherfunking Clinton was the next album. My only connection with him was the movie PCU when I was about twenty so this was a fun funky listen. 7/10 Top song Maggot Brain/Chant
Another good album from Funkadelic of funk and funk rock jams. It's too bad it's not on Spotify. The talking on Promenatal...Dodoo was distracting from the jam.
Those funky funksters are funking funked. It really is the top genre for self referencing, rock is way below in second place. Everything I know about funk came from a 2p machine in metroland arcade, and while I'm vaguely aware of one nation under a groove it didn't make the playlist of this machine so this funkadelic album at least can't be said to be a-tier. It's a lot of fun but I cant really get into it, it sounded exactly what I expected and it's fine. 2.5.
Elevator music for talented listeners. Excellent guitar.
good vibe, but repetitive and songs are too long
Very fun vibes. Songs were long though
It's just fine. Doesn't hold a candle to their older stuff
Just one song but vibe
far out. da funk. groovy.
Solid funk rock & as a result a pleasure. Nothing stand out, except (the hideously named) maggot brain, which could almost be forgotten at the end but is the strongest track.
listened so fast and messy, but I liked filling a diary listening to this half of tracks, btw, not avaliable in my country, what a pity
Sympa
Slightly disappointed … was expecting to love it but it was just OK.
Groovallegiance - ...DARE I SAY,...has a great groove to it. Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad - "The fear of being eaten by a sandwich" "Fried ice cream is a reality!" OBSESSED. Cholly (Funk Getting Ready To Roll!) - great groove halfway through. Maggot Brain - great to hear this transportive one again.
good funky tunes
Gotta love the funk... and I do, but in small doses. This album is definitely a vibe, a great party background mix. They really are great musicians, and they're having a lot of fun. It's just that it can be a bit... much. It's hard to say what songs are best or worst because the album isn't on any streaming service except YouTube. I found the album but no track listing. Finding the listing elsewhere didn't help much because it's often hard to tell when one song starts and another begins. And I didn't have the energy to listen THAT intently. It's funky, it's cool. I like it. But when am I going to listen to it? Probably never in its entirety. It's exhausting.
can't rank because it's not available on Spotify!
Listened to this album while hyping myself up to take my prescribed cough syrup. 3.5/5 ⭐️, solid musical ideas throughout but it all blended together for me. 159/1089
this rules. the musicality is so serious and the lyrics are so silly. i was stuck in traffic singing about fried ice cream is a reality. realized i knew all the guitar solos from my little brother learning guitar growing up. added to the library, fave track who says a funk band cant play rock
Not on Apple Music. Tbh didn’t need another album form this group. First one was cool but nothing life changing.
If you like funk, this is for you. If you don’t like funk, this is for you.
It’s a shame this isn’t streaming anywhere at the moment, because this album is a lot of fun and makes a great first impression.
Decent enough! Felt almost nostalgic having had them back at the start of this saga as my album #4
Good vibing music and upbeat. Enjoyed the album, but not going to be a frequent listen.
Definitely some interesting stuff and also some stuff that I thought was kind of meh and weird.
Not me favourite genre, but some good tunes and music
Even though it's not quite my thing, I've found it fun and interesting.
Groovy
Favourite Songs: Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad P.E. Squad / Doo Doo Chasers
While I thought this was good, I couldn’t help but think it was slightly weaker than Maggot Brain, which we had a while back on this site. I thought the lyrics here were good, but not great. In fact, they became slightly too repetitive for my liking. I think the same can be said for the actual music here, too. It was good, but slightly too repetitive and not as adventurous as Maggot Brain.
Me gustó. Son canciones largas pero tienen buena onda. Estaba estudiando y me concentré mucho!!!
Funky cowbell and dings and whistles are great and so fun. Beat is so clear through whole song. So laid back but still with energy. I like the ensemble feel.
Prog funk, George, bootsy The doo doo chasers
6/10 It seems wrong scoring this album so lowly - it's fun, it rocks and it is the funkiest thing ever. However, some tracks are too long. Way, way, too long. I almost had to skip, and I've not done that on the most misogynistic hip hop nor indulgent prog. Probably the best 3 star album yet.
Still funky but I liked Maggot Brain more. Likes: One Nation Under A Groove; Who Says A Funk Band Cant Play Rock
Fun listen. Hard to find though. Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock?! and Maggot Brain/Chant Live were my favorites. 6.2/10
Funky and groovy. I guess everything you might expect from a band with this name and an album with this title.
A lot that I love as is with every funkadelic album I’ve heard. As compared the other albums I’ve heard it is sadly a little less interesting but still an incredible listen regardless.
Great
Consistently well written, Groovy and part of the founding fathers of Funk music.
3/5
Ultimately quite boring but some great musicianship.
Coool!
Just didn’t feel like my thing for some reason
Solid funk. 3/5
Better than Coldplay
not too bad
Solid record
Not available on Apple Music
so this album is not available on spotify so i listened to a few songs on youtube, not my preferred method and I feel like i lost the flow but overall funk is always a good idea.
cant listen on spotify or apple music
Very fun! "Into You", "Cholly", and "Going All The Way Off" were my favorites
Bit hard to tell as only three tracks were available for me to play. Region locking is rubbish. Anyhoo, what I heard was fine
Very funky, very nice.
Thought this was cool from a music history perspective but not really my personal taste. Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad was wild lol
Lacks the structure and clean simple arc of Maggot Brain, but more ideas, more sounds, more cray-cray, and while not more Funk, possibly more P? It feels long, but it's hella groovy.
I really like Funkadelic but this album is up and down for me. Some great moments with the title track and the rendition of Maggot Brain, but also some stuff I find forgettable.
Stabil trea
Mestadels tungt sväng. Rätt varierande låtkvalitet. Bra inledning. Slutet på skivan känns lite ofokuserad. Eller är det jag som tappar fokus.
Not totally into this, but there's some cool moments. "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!" and "Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)" probably my favorites. 3 stars.
Funkydunkyspelunkybooboobalicious stuff although it gets a bit baggy towards the end and during the extra EP with the Maggot Brain live version. 3 bags of popcorn and a bag of soda.
No available streaming. Found an old, poor copy on Youtube. Poor quality leads to less than ideal listen.
This was more laid back than most of the funk I've heard. It was interesting but I prefer something more upbeat, I think.
One song. Repetitive
Not as much funk as their newer stuff but still funky!
It is a ok album, it is not what I like to hear so I will not add a lot of information here
3.5/5 funky and fun
Seems it’s incomplete on Spotify so I can’t say for sure but this is super anthemic in a way that makes it hard to listen to, say, commuting. Maggot Brain is superior. (Also two Funkadelic albums on this list???)
Funkigt de sa, funkigt det var.
It was surprisingly hard to stream this. Good album, though.
really fun! fantastic musicianship (the guitar playing especially, also some really nice tones) and infectious grooves and free-spirited nature. a bit of a mixed bag but definitely a worthwhile listen

Not on spotify
One of the most irritating aspects of funk music, at least the way Funkadelic plays it, is that the favorite subject for the song is “Funk” and just how fucking funky the song you’re listing to is. It’s a bit like watching a movie you’ve never seen before with the director’s commentary on. It really takes you out of the experience of listening to the music to have the music make reference to itself all the time. However stylistically and musically there was a lot more to this album than I expected. The songs are all a little too long but this is party music, not music for sitting and brooding over so that’s not tragic. Pretty fun all things considered.
3.25. It’s hard to be in a bad mood while listening to funk, the groove is infectious. And I also love a funk pun, but a little goes a long way.
There is a some great funk music throughout this album. Nothing ever quite topped the opening track and it maybe was a bit too long overall but still a classic album.
Very good album. 3,5
Good cooking music. Had to pull this guy up on YouTube, Spotify does not recognize the sovereignty of any nations under a groove.
- Excellent bass - Some interesting ideas - Really long songs, sometimes wears out the rhythm a little too much - Sort of fun once you get into it more - Not for me - Liked 'Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?' and 'Into You'
Some days are funkier than others. Maybe this wasn't one of the funkiest, so i'll give this a solid 3/5
Loving this but can't help thinking how much better this would be live. Live version might have much more sweat and danger that I kinda miss on album listening that feels too sterile.
(4/7) they groove pretty strong but sometimes longer than my attention span
We all need more funk in our lives!!!
Pretty groovy. Sucks the only way to listen to it is on YouTube.
Pretty standard funk album, nothing special in my eyes
I enjoyed the funk of the title track, and the extended guitar solo of the closing instrumental was reminiscent of Roger Waters and morphed into Hendrix after the backbeat faded. The music was good throughout, even if the lyrics were a bit off the wall. The chant at the end, from "Lunchmeataphobia," resonated: "Think! It Ain't Illegal Yet."
the instrumentals are good, but the album isn't really my thing
Would give this a 3.5 but probably fairer to round down than up. This was an enjoyable listen, the first song went into a playlist of mine, but the rest of the album unfortunately sounded too similar. None of the other songs really had their own identity per-say, as good as they all were. An enjoyable listen, but one im unlikely to do much again given the plentitude of more distinct albums. It's good music though.
I need to preface this by saying that funk is (probably) my favourite style of bass playing, and my favourite funk bassist Joe Dart was directly inspired by Parliament-Funkadelic and Bootsy Collins. The album starts really awkwardly; I just didn't gel with the title track or "Groovallegiance". Something about the vocals just made it quite meh for me, exacerbated by the fact they're way too long for my tastes. Fortunately, this album is not nearly that cohesive or consistent. I found the mishmash-ness worked to the album's favour: the rest of the album is a little stronger than the rocky start (the bass vocalist on "Into You" is phenomenal). When I heard it I had expected "Who Said a Funk Band Can't Play Rock" to be the standout track, but I think it's completely blown out of the water by the bonus track "Maggot Brain" — clearly very Hendrix inspired and with the best playing on the whole album. Rating the whole album in one star rating is particularly gruelling here, because as a package I'm just not sure of this album. I wouldn't ever listen to it in full again, and I actively dislike the first tracks, but the funk rock works for me when it works. Ultimately I enjoyed the album more than I didn't, and that's something. Probably 5.5/10
didn't inspire me as much as i thought it would
The second part of the expanded edition, which collects the instrumentals, sounds better due to the absence of the word clutter on the main side of the record in the main tracks
- What I like most about this album is the groove of the baselines. - Some nice guitar riffs, too (especially in the song about Rock). - You can definitely see their influence on later music. - What I don't love: Some dated synths and the singing voices could feel thin and weak (other than the baritone on Into You). The lyrics were pretty unremarkable and repetitive, too. - The title track was, by far, my favourite on the album. The others couldn't really compete. - Also, the songs and album are too long. Each song would have benefitted from some more editing. - Sounds like George Clinton got everyone addicted to drugs and didn't pay people: "As the hit records started piling up, the musicians who played on them started asking about money. According to some, they received only $20 or $50 at the end of tour. Others claim they were paid in drugs. Former manager Robert Mittleman counters that band members owed Clinton for drugs consumed on the road and he merely collected it out of their wages when they returned from tour. When one enterprising band member began selling drugs to his tour mates to cover his meager pay, Clinton allegedly posted a sign which said “No Drug Dealing unless authorized by George.” And was a predator: "Most disturbing are claims from the female members of P-Funk that they were expected to be sexually available for Clinton, who preyed on their insecurities and career ambitions to manipulate them to his wishes." There's also the weird connection to Process Church.
They are funky. Prefer their earlier albums. But this is alright.
Enjoyable album full of funky guitar riffs and groovy melodies
For an album that was this hard to stream, I really appreciated parts of it. Too much talk of diarrhea for my liking, but it was funky! 5/10
They sure say funk a lot
Another great foundational piece. Whole genres stand on these shoulders. A fun listen.
This was a challenge to find, but eventually I got to it on YouTube. The title track is excellent, loved it. After that, it wasn't as great, though I did enjoy Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock and Cholly. Both of these were good tracks. Not as good as Maggot Brain was by Funkadelic, but still solid. 3 stars
Rv
Definitely funky, and overall I enjoyed it as background music. Somehow this didn't resonate with me as much as "Maggot Brain" which came up for me previously. Though I was glad there wasn't another track with fart noises, some of the lyrics were still a bit weird. High 3.
Good Psych stuff in here, I like what this band is going for but for some reason my album ended on maggot brain (live) and I realised how much better that song is than this whole album. 3
When I saw this album, I thought “here we go, another album I don’t understand why I need to listen to”. I didn’t think I’d like it. However, I was mistaken, this was a good album and I enjoyed listening to it. A creative blend of funk, R&B, & rock music & lyrics.
He’s freaked out
it's enjoyable fav song: Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!
So many great guitar solos in this display of (barely) controlled chaos. Gets repetitive, but that's kind of the point. Listened to: at 5MW. Favorite tracks: Groovallegiance, Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad, Cholly (Funk Getting Ready To Roll!)
Melekosta funkkihassuttelua. Ekstra EP kuulosti omaan korvaan mukavimmalta, muuten perus funk-adelic ja lyriikat oli melkoset paikoitellen
A decent listen that has a nice sound, and some genuinely funny lyrics in the first few songs (‘Who Says a Funk Band Can’t Play Rock’ a highlight). But too much of this really drags on, with some songs meandering towards ten minutes. Lots of them are instrumental later on and although the musicianship is good, there was nothing that stuck in my mind.
I really like Funkadelic and it surprised me this was their most commercially successful album, I think they have other albums that are more impactful but maybe I’m just swayed by the song ‘can you get to that?’ being like the best song ever.
damn this is awesome. the first song already pulled me in. why isnt this on spotify?? really funky stuff, and really groovy stuff! alot of the songs overstay their welcome. torn on this, some cool stuff but its way too long. 6/10
great sound, lots of soul, and overall very funky and enjoyable. butttt i did find the songs a bit repetitive and long at times. long album.
Fun but not that impressive, I had higher expectations...
Loved the singing, liked a lot of the music but some of it got a bit too weird or a bit too repetitive for me. Fav song: Who Says a Funk Band Can’t Play Rock? Least fav: Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)
Very fun songs! Lots of long songs- mostly I enjoyed them enough that it didn't really register to me but I was very much aware of all 11 minutes of Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis and all 5 minutes and 43 seconds of Into You. Favourite song: Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock? Least: Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)
Buen ritmo
I preferred the less funky tracks it must be said. Quite enjoyed maggot brain and the back half of the album.
I enjoyed this way more when actively listening than when having it as background. These people are great instrumentalists and it’s better to listen to them grooving together than pretending I want something to dance to.
Standouts One Nation Under a Groove Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock Cholly
Didn’t listen as it is not available on Spotify
Quality old school funk, great stuff
It was good, I enjoyed Mothership Connection a little more though.
Did not listen. Full album not on Spotify.
Nice to listen to in the background but hard for me to engage with beyond that.
i like the funk. i like the groove. the song format makes it hard to me to get invested i think. its good shit though. goes on forever but maybe in like a cool meditative way. the title track is probably my favorite
Rating: 6/10 Ehhhh I don't know, I'm very likely underrating this but as funky and creative and well crafted the music that this collective makes together is, I don't love listening to the whole album in one chunk. It can be pretty cool though. I believe the best song is Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!
Funky long-form and groovy. Lost me a few times with how loose it was sometimes, but overall an enjoyable listen that I would consider listening to again. I also enjoy how addicting the title track is 6.6/10
I liked it initially, but didn't come back to it throughout the day. Not a huge fan.
It was fine. A bit less funk-oriented than I expected in places, given the band and album name. I'm not a big fan of long tracks, and I zoned out for the most part.
Having listened to Maggot Brain a few months ago, I was quite looking forward to this. However, I quickly started to lose interest, and I remembered what it was about Maggot Brain that became tedious. Overlong songs with repetitive grooves. The album is saved by the song that elevated the previously mentioned album - the live version of Maggot Brain absolutely nails an extra star on for this reviewer. Honestly could listen to that track all day. Not so for Groovalliegance or Promentalwhatever. A low 3 stars, but if I get stoned again, I'll relisten.
A good mix of fun, soul and rock.
ACTUAL RATING: 3.5 Songs I liked (for if this album ever comes back to Spotify): One Nation Under A Groove Groovalleigance Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock!? and Cholly (Funk Getting Ready to Roll!)
It’s indeed really funky and the instrumentation and voices are amazing. I find it kinda cool, that, apparently, the only way you can listen to this album, is either via YouTube ore physical media. Makes it feel special to listen to it.
Couldn’t find it. So giving it a middle of the road.
Hard to find, but a good listen.
Very funky, surprisingly
Groovy single, but couldn’t find the full album on my streaming service of choice.
I didn't quite like this one as much as the raw rock-centric funk of "Maggotbrain". But this is probably the more accessible album and still pretty fun.
I couldn’t find this music on my streaming service provider, but I did find a couple of the songs so I got a pretty good flavor of the band and this record. I enjoyed it, but it sounds like another 3 star album for me. The songs are a bit long, though.
A go to funky time!
Its not my sort of thing i'll be honest but i can still appreciate it
fav songs: one nation under a groove into you elastic, polished, groovy 60/100
Well, that was as bonkers as I wanted it to be! Full of grooves, tunes and madness! How did George Clinton access my nightmares? The fear of being eaten by a sandwich is a recurring theme in my subconscious...
it's funkadelic. what do youbexpect
#852. The same thing happened with this one that ends up happening with all of them that aren't on streaming so I have to listen to them on Youtube- I end up just kind of skimming through bits here and there, but not actually giving the album the time it deserves. Maybe you say that's not fair and I'm an idiotperson, and maybe you're right, but I can say with a mild to moderate amount of certainty that it will happen again if I have to look any others up on YouTube in the future. 3/5: seemed nice.
Good background music to smoke some gorilla fingers to.
NA - this isn’t on Spotify unfortunately
Starts strong but overstays its welcome.
#2 - Never Heard Before Ok, quite fun, quite enjoyable, I don’t know if I’ll ever come back to it again.
Total vibes here. I would be losing my mind if I were in a field, intoxicated and had this playing live on stage in front of me, but sat in traffic, in the rain on my drive to work is an entirely different scenario. I actually took to this more as the record went on. I thought it was going to be a real slog, but I can see the appeal here. You just need to be high to really appreciate it.
Not a huge Funk fan but this one is fine. 3 stars
I’m ready to join the funk nation!
I had heard of George Clinton before, but my experience with Funk is very limited. The most I know about this subgenre is the skit by Key & Peele where they poke fun at non-sensical lyrics. There is definitely some of that in this album (special callout to track #4 Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)). All in all the music had great grooves, but I don't see myself going back to this record often.
It's okay, not really a lot to say about it. Didn't hate it, wasn't super locked into it either.
Wasn’t a big fan of the fist half but the last 3 song were incredible. The last 3 songs were almost completely instrumental so maybe that why I enjoyed them more with a bit lesss going on in the mix
I generally like funkadelic but this was mid somehow
A time warping plethora of groove and groans.
Sure
Started very funky and fun, wanted to move around to it. Somewhere a song had singing and talking over it and it was annoying, after that one I felt like the energy disappeared, and it wasn't quite as fun anymore. Just alright.
First half was groocy, funky and delicious. But songs just sort of dragged on a bit too long to my taste.
Listening Notes A Funkadelic album that has alluded me Fried Ice Cream is a Reality! Way more of a progessive rock record than some of their other stuff Standout Tracks "One Nation Under a Groove", "Groovallegiance", "Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)", "Lunchmeataphobia (Think! It Ain't Illegal Yet!)" First time? Yes Will it go into your rotation? There's some jams here

It's fine I'm just not into funk today or probably any other day.
Funky, hard to get in some places due to rights or whatever capitalist BS.
not my favourite but v good
Very groovy indeed!
More groovy and less song-oriented, but this is cool, looking forward to giving it some more spins. Less enamored with Side 2 (especially the 11 minute song about doodoo) than Side 1. I can hear the influence on Fishbone, including the approach to song titles.
Not on Spotify. Listened in YouTube. It's your typical funkadelic, very much a mix of psychedelic rock and soul with more groove and weirdness mixed in. If they'd dropped some of the spoken word I think many of the tracks would be better.
Didnt find the album but the single was noce
Different sound to what I'm used to, prefered it the second time I listened.
This is a fun listen, though being a tiny bit more familiar with earlier Funkadelic I find it somewhat less interesting musically than that stuff, which immediately grabbed me when I first heard it. I waffled between 3 and 4 here but I want to start out setting my scale with "3 is a good record that I enjoyed," which is exactly what this was.
Went straight through me, nothing especially caught my attention but it was a nice listen
I really like when talented musicians don’t take themselves too seriously, and I think funk in particular is a genre that encourages humour. One Nation Under a Groove was a really fun opening track and immediately stuck in my head and I had real high hopes for it - but I the just got a bit bored. Maybe the songs were a bit too long, and could have been tightened up a bit but I think that may have been a feature of the genre at the time. Really torn been giving this a 4 and a 3. But while I might explore the rest of their music, not sure I’ll be coming back to this album, so a 3 it is!
Funky fresh
non lo so mi ha confuso
Good funky jams. "Doo Doo Chaser" was super memorable.
Funk rock, leaned more toward rock than I expected
Yeah this was fun to listen to while I planned my file server migration to SharePoint. One track was like funky Pink Floyd.
Had to go to YouTube to listen to this album. This a trip down funky way.
Wouldn’t listen but pretty chill vibes
production is incredible with instrumentals that keep on hitting however and lacks any sense of a song structure. lyrics seem as in they might have a real message behind them but I cant find it
It was nice, the first song was cool, the others were fine
i dont know why but there were only few songs available, therefore i only listened that one so i dont think thats is a fair rating!
Put the F in the Funk 3.5
Groovy, but for some reason a lot of songs were unavailable
Can’t listen on Spotify but the title track is good.
Funky and groovy Summer party background music would be 10/10
Upvote if you believe fried ice cream is a reality
Well, that got pretty weird
Interesting in overall, but not so good.
Great to hear this again, some dancing for new year's eve
Lots to like. But a bit disjointed. 3*
non c'è su spotify ma la vibe è chiara
The instrumentals are nice. I don't like how some of the songs have people talking as background noise (especially on the track "The Doo Doo Chasers"). I'm including the bonus EP tracks in my final rating, one of which is a live performance of Maggot Brain, one of the best guitar solos.
Its not available in spotify
Like the sound but one one song was memorable
Funk ain't my thing, but this is good funk, particularly One Nation.
very weird, as anything in the george clinton universe typically is, but still entertaining.
7/10 Highlights: Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock Groovallegiance One Nation under a Groove
Pretty good
I don't even know how to rate this. Technically I think it's great, but it's not a genre I'd pick to listen to. Also - fried ice cream?!
Mukavaa funkia ja groovea
Fun but not my favorite
Album #5 Funkadelic: One Nation Under a Groove Music to clean your shit by. I definitely wouldn’t consider myself to be a very funky guy; in fact, I do believe that there is a considerable lack of funk within me most days. Combined with the fact that I am also extraordinarily sober and have potentially the whitest music taste of all time, this album did not seem like one that was likely to resonate with me. However, having never heard a funk album before, I suppose I didn’t really know what to expect. One thing that became immediately apparent to me is that the concept of ‘funk’ is fairly fluid, as most of the lyrics and songs revolved around this idea of funk operating in many different scenarios. Playing funk music, being funky, cleaning your shit to the funk, etc. It reminds me of that Eric Clapton quote about how it is more artistically impressive to continuously explore the same theme over and over again, rather than delve into multiple themes. Though in his case, he was talking about having his body operated like a gundam and in the case of George Clinton and Funkadelic, that theme, which is explored ad nauseam, is the Funk. The lyrics appear nonsensical and repetitive, often talking purely about the funk and its effects in different scenarios, which seems like they are meant to be intentionally open to interpretation, so whoever is tripping whilst listening to the album can feel an extra sense of relatability to fuel their paranoia. I believe that the ‘funk’ actually serves as a metaphor for a deeper and more impactful message. The two concepts that are continuously brought up are funk and shit. In the case of shit, it can be seen in many songs, particularly those involving the infamous ‘doo doo chasers’. My interpretation is that the funk represents all that is good, and the shit is all that is bad, which is why funk music is said to wash away the shit from your ass like an enema, or something along those lines. By giving into the funk and the groove, all the problems you and the nation have fade away for at least the duration of the album, and if everyone were to partake in the funk, the nation would prosper. I particularly enjoyed the spoken-word elements of the album as I found them amusing and thought-provoking at times, and the guitar work was also especially impressive. Overall, a very promising introduction to funk and a very fun album. Interested to hear more from Funkadelic. A very high 3 stars, nearing a 4. Best Tracks: One Nation Under a Groove, Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?! Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers) Worst Track: P.E Squad Rating out of 10: 7.5
There's some weird pot smoking stuff going on here. All very funky. Is it any good? I really don't know!
It’s no maggot brain, but it is fun. Funkadelic i think are the epitome of that cool funk sound, groove and look. Took me bloody ages to find the right album though and that did annoy me. 3.5/5.0 Best Song: groovallegience
A fun album. Difficult to find on streaming. Probably would not revisit as I like other funk sounds more
First album for me that is not on streaming. My third Funkadelic album. So far my favorite is Maggot Brain. I clearly don’t feel the funk I guess. It is funky, groovy, funny. But it doesn’t do much for me.
Not my usual genre but enjoyed this !
I found this to be an overindulgence equivalent of a bar band playing in a studio setting. I like the first song, but I found songs to be too much of a mess to fully enjoy. The playing is good but over exuberant and feels like there’s not enough conceptual depth to have me interested for longer than a song or two I would rather listen to Prince or other funk acts that have some sort of ideas around pushing the genre forward instead of resting the same thing that they had been at this point, this is the 10th album and I feel that it is tired and fortunately, I would not come back to it
Súper funky but too many jams for me, needed at least one catchy song
Good album, felt there were more prolific funk artists at the height of funk. Good vibe. Wouldn’t want in constant rotation but a good addition every now and then.
Tricky to review and album thats not fully available on streaming service. Any how, the main single One Nation Under a Groove is awesome. I kind of was not bothered of needing to play the song on repeat (accidentally), that great of a song. Still, not the full album. I'll now have it three stars and get back to revisit the review, once listened to the whole record.

Decent museum music
Straight walk off
Funky
Hard to find and didn’t blow my socks off.
Not bad
This is a pretty fun listen. I love the positivity and not giving up on the "funk"!
Cool as hell but it does get pretty noodley
It is most definitely a groove.
Hmmm, it's OK. Some alright beats but it's quite meandering at points. E.g. do we really need 10 minutes of that 10 second riff in Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis? One Nation Under a Groove, Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock? and Into You all great songs though
L'album pose d'ailleurs la question directement avec "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!". Note : 3/5

Genuinely couldn't find this on Apple Music, I'm sure it's good though. Edit 6/30/26: I haven't been logging the day I'm going back to these, but this one feels worth it cause it's the one where I tried to find it and just couldn't my first time around. And honestly I really didn't miss much, there's kinda nothing special about this one. It's fine I guess, but it's not like there's not better funk music on here, even better Funkadelic on here. But I'm still glad I tracked it down, it would've been hanging over my head until the end of this thing if I didn't.
Great soundscapes/tones and occasional brilliance among overly repetitious and sometimes obnoxious grooves.
Very funky album. Pleasant to listen to. Pretty diverse, lots of melodies and different sounds, hard to be bored by it. More plays would probably elevate the enjoyment even more.
Not on Spotify but really good jams
Yes but idk, didn't feel it
Good name. Definitely funky.
One nation under a groove is a bit of a banger isn’t it!? But this album version went on unnecessarily too long. Some fine funk throughout.
Not able to find the album available to stream
Day 74 Only had time to listen through once but on first listen I preferred this to maggot brain. 7/10 Highlights One Nation Under A Groove Into You
Don’t love the slobbery sounds at the start Good guitar at the start of I bet you Reverb at the start of music for my mother is nice, then the stripped back guitar Zippy guitar sounds in I got a thing are good Overall it’s not my thing but musically it’s impressive
Short and funky.
Couldn’t find the album but the single was fun!
later
not on spotify
Fun stuff going on but as a whole... Not something I'll be going back to.
Not a huge fan of the middle song in the album, but the rest was enjoyable.
Really funky, as it should. Great listen, not boring, and at least as political as it should be. Fav lyrics: Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Fav music: Who says a funk band can't play rock Honorable mention: Maggot brain
Featuring such hits as "Ladies Night, but it's not Ladies Night". I'm joking, but for a George Clinton record I thought I'd enjoy this more. Instead, it just felt pretty all over the place and never hit me with an "oh yeah!" moment.
This is #day426 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… my second Funkadelic album, the first being Maggot Brain precisely 200 days ago on my #day225, which I rated a 4. One Nation Under A Groove is, you guess, groovy, funky, and... perhaps not as essential as Maggot Brain. This is a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day427.
This was alright. Dug Maggot Brain
I enjoyed this a whole lot more than I expected to. I hate funk. But - well, it's funk, Jim, but not as we know it!
