Couldn't find this album. Listened to Funkadelic - Funkadelic. Wasn't as much funk as I expected. It was fine
Alright
Whilst it was funky, it wasn't what I was expecting. Less big band funk, more rock band funk. Enjoyable but didn't make me want to listen again.
Some good funk tunes, but tailed off a bit
Good funky grooves
Three funk songs that have a sum of over an hour. Laced with electric guitar solos in pure squibly-doo style. I admit that my mind was elsewhere while listening, and whilst it was cool to hear something new, I didn't feel particularly captivated by it. 3 Stars.
I'm not high enough for this, and I'm pretty high. Galactic grooves, loads of cheese, not their best work but has some tasty peaks!
This is actually my second listen to this album in this collection, but it was so long ago it's a bit like listening to it again for the first time. The main album is a bit slower than I remember, with only the title track and (to some degree) "Who says a funk band can't play rock?!" standing out, but "Lunchmeataphobia" and the live track part of "Maggot brain" on the bonus EP is also a fun addition. And I like the idea that this album has an element of progressive rock in it, although it feels more like prog funk than anything else (if that's even a thing). It does feel like Funkadelic (or at least the two albums we get in this project) is a kind of red-headed step-child to Parliament, despite having largely the same musicians on most albums; I've enjoyed both of the Funkadelic albums, but not as much as Parliament, I'll admit. And I think I prefer "Maggot Brain" (the album, not the bonus EP song) to this one. "THINK -- THINK -- THINK -- IT AIN'T ILLEGAL YET"
This only took off for me with "Cholly" which I didn't realize was the album's last track because I was listening to the EP, and the next two songs, with Cholly, were the best part. Not their greatest but they've got the funk.
Actually couldn’t find on any streaming platform so gave it a default 3
One Nation Under a Groove is packed with groove, personality, and that unmistakable Funkadelic spirit, but it does not always land evenly. The title track is an undeniable classic, a joyful, infectious anthem that captures everything great about funk in under six minutes. “Who Says a Funk Band Can’t Play Rock?!” brings in the heavier edge with plenty of bite, and “Groovallegiance” keeps the flow loose and playful. Outside of the highlights, though, some of the jams feel a bit stretched, more about the vibe than the songwriting. The musicianship is never in question — the basslines are tight, the guitars sparkle and snarl, and the vocals bring both humor and attitude — but not every track sticks once the album’s over. One Nation Under a Groove is fun, funky, and full of energy, but it works better in parts than as a whole.
Highlight Song/s: Groovallegiance Really solid, not much to say. But solid grooves, solid bass and amazing guitar lines. I found this a lot more tolerable than Mothership Connection, yes its by Parliament, similar enough to me. Mothership was completely un-listenable after the halfway point due to it being insanely repetitive. This was not. Here's hoping Maggot Brain is good.
Ótimos momentos de guitarras (o melhor do disco) nas faixas finais, a partir de "Lunchmeataphobia (Think! It Ain't Illegal Yet!)" - na versão do YouTube que está diferente do álbum original - salvam o disco de seu tom confuso. Estas faixas são realmente incríveis!
I funks with it
S’good!
Groovy and funky.
Not on Spotify? 🤔
Not bad but not for me
So much great groove and playing going on! But I don’t like the songs very much at all, unfortunately
Not necessary my cup of tea. But nice listening wile working.
Couldn't listen because f$ck Spotify, but I know this band slaps. I have to assume a default score of 3 stars
Die Band heißt Funkadelic und man bekommt genau das was von einer Band erwartet die Funkadelic heißt. 4 Sterne, wenn ich Funk mögen würde. 3 Sterne, da ich Funk nicht mag.
Funkadelic always reminds me of annoying people at student parties in the early 90s. I know the album is doing a lot more than that, but for me there's too much weird context.
Me gustó pero siento que perdía el interés y lo volvía a ganar dependiendo de lo que sonaba. No sé si es que hoy estoy con complicaciones de atención o si es el disco. Tendrá una segunda escucha como corresponde próximamente.
Not my style but I still enjoyed.
6/10 does what it says on the tin 9-9-2025
Fun listen.
crazy sounds and a lot of poop jokes in here. gotta love it
Good fun - decent tracks - enjoyed, but not sure I’d revisit
irgendwie nur 3 lieder uf spotify chönne lose & eis devo isch s'instrumental vom erste gsi die sind aber super gsi – trotzdem hani mer d'müeh aber irgendwie nöd gmacht zum s'album uf youtube oder so lose weni mer d'müeh gmacht hetti wär's wahrschinli four nations under four grooves gsi aber da muessi wohl three nations under three grooves gäh… päch gha
Funkeh
"Do you promise to Funk?" This is so typically 70s I'm kinda obsessed with it! Top Picks One Nation Under A Groove Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock? Promentals**tbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doodoo Chasers) P.E. Squad/Doodoo Chasers ("going all the way off") A Strong 3.5!
funky. not really my thing but i can get down to it
Not my style of music.
Gotta love the funk... and I do, but in small doses. This album is definitely a vibe, a great party background mix. They really are great musicians, and they're having a lot of fun. It's just that it can be a bit... much. It's hard to say what songs are best or worst because the album isn't on any streaming service except YouTube. I found the album but no track listing. Finding the listing elsewhere didn't help much because it's often hard to tell when one song starts and another begins. And I didn't have the energy to listen That intently. It's funky, it's cool. I like it. But when am I going to listen to it? Probably never in its entirety. It's exhausting.
Favorites: One Nation Under A Groove, Cholly (Funk Getting Ready to Roll!), Maggot Brain I think One Nation Under A Groove is an album that was meant to be listened via a physical copy, hence its lack of availability on streaming services. Unfortunately, I do not own a physical copy of it, so I had to listen on YouTube, which may have taken a bit of enjoyment out of it for me personally (especially since they kept showing me ads mid-song). I also feel like the longer songs, minus the title track and this rendition of Maggot Brain, kinda dragged and didn't do too much in their runtime. A little disappointed, but I'll probably give this another shot someday. 6/10
groovy crazy funk
A very eclectic and funky set of songs, some jams that last too long, and some not long enough. The back half of the album is really when it takes off. It’s not available for streaming on music services, so I had to listen to the album as a whole on YouTube. I would be curious to see the count on the times the word “funk” is said throughout the album. It’s definitely in the three digit range. Overall, fun and interesting to listen to, although some songs are confusing, and the lyrics a bit dull and repetitive. The music and the musicianship is where this band shines, and this album is a good example of that. The addition of the live tracks at the end is a nice touch.
I think I like this album but it's hard to tell due to the horrendous listening experience of being interrupted 15 times for ads for fuckin Temu.
I don't know that I've ever heard the word "funk" so much in one hour.
I expected all disco this had some funky guitar stuff
This wasn't easy to find. It wasn't on Spotify, and I had to 'watch' a video of each track on Youtube. Youtube showed me an ad that began with a loud fart noise, and then an elderly woman talked about a magical product that could help free the stuck poop from her colon. I didn't understand that one, until I did.
good
I’m doing this “just for the funk of it”
Love this
Weirdly, not available (apart from the title track) on Spotify in my country. With due respect to George Clinton & company, Mothership Connection hits me harder. There's a lot here, including some incredible guitar playing and some great crowd chants. This is an album that surely contributed a great deal to the mainstream of rock, but it's just less compelling in terms of groove (ironically) than other work by Parliament/Funkadelic. Worth an hour of your time, still, but not a masterpiece yet.
Psychedelic funk, nice sound but some tracks dragged on a bit.
I had to go to YOUTUBE to find this album. Enjoyed the variety.
This was a lot less "in your face" than I expected. Maybe that's my misunderstanding of Funk, but I was anticipating something much more frenetic. Spotify doesn't have this one, so I had to fight ads to listen on YT... Probably not the best way to get 'under a groove', but I tried. Overall it's not a difficult listen, but not really my thing. My favorite song might be "Maggot Brain", but that's a bonus track that was added later. Otherwise, "Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis" stood out, and so did "Who Says A Funk Bank Can't Play Rock?!" but the latter only because it's a pure funk song and doesn't seem to support any argument that they can play rock. Ironically, "Maggot Brain" is straight rock & roll and does more to support the thesis. So that’s fun.
elite guitar solo on the live track
This album does not appear to be on Apple Music, so I had to find it on YouTube. Funkadelic songs being interrupted by ads is some bullshit. Of the two Funkadelic albums we've had now, I think Maggot Brain is more "essential" than this one, but this album is cool too.
Didn't really grab me beyond its enjoyable funkiness
Undeniably funky, but it just didn’t quite do it for me. While I can appreciate the grooves and the energy, it didn’t leave a lasting impression.
I love the sound. Of course! And this iteration of funk absolutely captures a certain time and place. There’s some potty humor that might get old on repeat listens, but that’s a small sin.
eh funky I guess 3/5
Love me some funky chunky music. solidest 3 stars I can give
I dont really know what to think of this. I am always up for some funk, especially if they claim to mix it with rock. But most of these songs didnt really do it for me. Not enough funk, not enough rock, no good lyrics or voices, just overall okayish.
Classic. Fun jams. Party music but I would say, great in a mix but the whole album at once is too much funk for me.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1001 ALBUMS- # 72 Keep those funky grooves coming! As cheesy as some of these song titles are, which I suppose is the entertaining charm of this record, the fun and upbeat music will make you feel as intended! One Nation Under a Groove is not just Funkadelic’s most commercially successful album — it's one of the most influential records in Black music history. Released at a time of both political unrest and cultural explosion, it blends funk, rock, gospel, soul, and psychedelia into a genre-defying statement of unity and liberation. At its heart, One Nation Under a Groove is about liberation through rhythm. George Clinton, the mastermind behind Funkadelic and Parliament, envisioned music not just as entertainment, but as a tool of collective empowerment. Where Parliament leaned into outer-space theatrics and sci-fi funk, Funkadelic brought grit, psychedelia, and political edge. 🎧 Classic Track: One Nation Under a Groove 🎧 Deep Cut Gem: Into You 🎧 Personal Favorite: Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock? In 1978, while disco ruled the charts and punk exploded in the underground, Funkadelic released a record that transcended both scenes — One Nation Under a Groove. Equal parts party and protest, spiritual sermon and sonic experiment, it was the album that solidified George Clinton’s Parliament-Funkadelic collective as not just a band, but a philosophy. Over 45 years later, One Nation Under a Groove remains a defining artifact of Black musical innovation and countercultural resistance — a joyous, danceable call to unity that still reverberates in clubs, protests, and playlists alike. In 2025, One Nation Under a Groove still slaps — sonically and spiritually. Whether you’re hearing it in a club, a protest march, or your living room, it reminds us of the transformative power of sound. So put the needle down, turn up the bass, and let the groove do what it was meant to do — unite us. Because, as George Clinton warned and promised: “The funk not only moves, it can remove.”
Sehr abwechslungsreiche Scheibe - gefällt.
There’s a lot of information here. It’s definitely fun. Cool bass throughout. There are so many voices and I don’t have the cultural/genre specific background to differentiate a good vs. great funk album. I enjoyed the experience but I likely won’t listen to this again.
Feel like this is the Funkadelic record I would’ve liked had I had easier access to it back in the day (1990s). More melody and hooks, but still the same basic set-up. Still can’t shake the sense I’m listening to other people having a good time instead of it transporting me, but I get the sense that’s on me.

Funky
Buja
i liked it!
Funky? Yes Psychedelic? Yes Groovy? Absolutely 3.5/4
Very deserving of the name Funkadelic FRIED ICE CREAM IS A REALITY I liked the cult-like repeating of "Fried ice cream is a reality!". That was fun I can just feel the vibes of how this is a great and historic album
2.5 stars I liked it. A bit repetitive and I didn’t feel it all stick with me. But it was enjoyable throughout.
I can see why this album is so revered as one of the great funk albums but it doesn't do it for me. I'll come back and listen another time but I just felt lost in it
Funky. Not my usual taste but not bad either. Best song: One Nation Under A Groove Notable(s): Lunchmeataphobia (Think! It Ain't Illegal Yet!)
Out of all the artists I've reviewed, these guys are the ones I reckon are most improved when seen live. Something about the sound world clearly lends itself so well to a visual performance. The overall vibe is fab, I really enjoy how layered the album sounds as a whole. That being said, it all kinda melds into one timeless clump of funk, so doesn't work quite as well as an 'album' of sorts
Not quite what I expected. A lot more classic rocky.
Fun music
Good party music. Wouldn’t normally listen to this but it’s a lot better than all the hip hop that scraped a 2.
A decent listen, I'm not sure how likely I would be to go back to it as the whole thing doesn't appear to be on Spotify.
Some super funky parts to this but I do feel like the songs are a touch long at times and they need a few more ideas to keep me interested
The hits are good, they were hits for a reason, many of the other tracks are decent. There are a few songs that were a little obnoxious as far as vocal range and/or repetitive soundscape for my tastes, pretty standard 3 stars in my book.
Great album - but had to listen on YouTube. So no idea on which song is which but Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock is incredible and I’d love for someone to cover that. Some good to great stuff here, I’d relisten for sure.
Cool album
Really liked the first half, felt like it lost its way around the second - never heard poop mentioned so much in an album before
-i’ve been OBSESSED with Maggot Brain lately so i was super excited to listen to this, having never heard any other Funkadelic albums -not bad at all. very groovy and interesting if not a bit lacking in overall direction and purpose imho?? def not holding a candle to Maggot Brain for me but whatever i still enjoyed it -Favorites are One Nation Under A Groove and Who Says A Funk Band Can’t Play Rock?!
Pretty nice funk, but does go on a bit too long. The album is also unavailable on Spotify.
Some choice funky grooves masterminded by George Clinton with some meaty driving bass lines courtesy of Bootsy Collins. Fun song titles some of which are nearly prog running times I can see why this album did well even if it's not for me. The funk rock fusion is fun, the title track is the standout and Cholly ends the album on a high note.
me gustó, aunque sean de los inicios del funk no siento que sea lo más funk que escuche como que es algo muy de ellos no se cómo decirlo
Good mix of funk, rock and R&B. Songs felt way too long though
Sure, alright
its good-no maggot brain
LP fails to live up to the excellent title track. A good nog great LP
Really enjoyed this, not what I'd normally listen to, super funky and could easily listen again, only problem 3 songs is very short haha but will definitely add one nation under a groove to the playlist
Bastante repetitivo y alguna canción es pasarse de larga. Pero el instrumental es muy bueno en casi todas las canciones
It's... fine. It's nowhere close to Mothership Connection. It has some moments, but it's mostly letting someone solo for a while, and this is funk. I want jams, not solos. I also don't want people talking. We want the funk, give up the funk.
Wasn't able to fully review. It was taken off spotify
Extremely interesting and eye-opening. Not sure I've ever heard much of them before.
Could only access 3 songs, one of which was the instrumental disco mix version of another one so not much to judge on.
Great funk But once the main track out the way gets a bit messy
Reasonably fun listen
Funk. I was under the impression that funk was upbeat, danceable music. The majority of this album was slow, with a section in the middle that was mostly just noise. The last few songs pulled me back around though.
Kind of a disjointed listen. I'm not totally sure what is part of the album. I have the LP of this and upon initial listen I really liked the title track and "Into You" and the rest was a little disappointing. I had the streaming version on with the bonus material and the live song. And it was a little more pleasurable experience, but what is the actual album here? The LP was a little underwhelming, but surely an 8 year old live song is not part of this album. IDK 3/5 i guess.
Good, not my favorite by them but a good album.
Some nice funk. Enjoyed it
Some of the best guitar licks that I have ever heard.
I liked this album. It's got a bit of a B-sides feel to it, but all of the songs are good. Technical proficiency abounds, but It doesn't all come together somehow. 3.25
Nice album
Funky. Songs were too long for my attention span. Better with sunshine.
Good and groovy, although not my favourite genre. A few too many noisy guitar parts, Songwriting mediocre.
Some decent funky tunes. Not available on spotify.
Fun album to listen to.
funky! nur drei tracks auf spotify - schade, aber OK.
nice 3.5
Really cool album. Not sure I’d save any of it for my own taste but a fantastic background groove. A bit long tbh, but again, more towards the background music.
This is a fun album and it's funky as hell. There are some insanely good bass lines and guitar solos throughout the whole thing!
An okay album but without any outstanding songs. 3 stars or C+.
Funky
No one has ever accused Funkadelic of false advertising
Tracked this down on YouTube. I enjoyed the vibe, and the sounds and rhythms, but it went on a bit. I think we got Maggot Brain ages ago, but I can't remember what I reviewed it. For this one, I can't go higher than 3 despite the obvious musical proficiency on display.
Listens: 1.5 Standout Tracks: Not sure. Something about poop. Couldnt view the track list as I was listening. Could not listen to this on YouTube Music. Not available for some reason. Sounds like a recurring theme based on other reviews/comments. Had to use YouTube. No ads though since I have YTM. Anyways... I enjoyed this album, though I am having trouble rating it. As I continue to rate albums I am torn on what it means for an album to be a 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5. Obviously, 1 and 5 are the ends of the spectrum; either hate it or love it, but in between?? What is the litmus test for a 4? "like it"? Do I expect to listen to an 4-rated album beyond the day I am assigned the album? Do I add a 4 to my rotation? Do I add it to my library? No one knows. I enjoyed the baselines. I enjoyed the lyrics for some of the songs. I enjoyed the artwork for he album (and the art work in general looks great too). I don't think there was anything I actually disliked about the music. 3 Edit: Dropped to 3. I havent thought about this album since listening to it.
Couldn't find this album anywhere, song was good
Personally not for my but there was definitely a high level of funky. Feet were bopping along to the groovy beat
Fav tracks: who says a funk band cant play rock ? , into you , doodoo chasers , maggot brain Play that funky music white boy , some songs were great but others dragged on too long with strange parts interspersed in .
Funky!
Not widely available! Good stuff, though!
Funky and fun. I can see this album influenced a ton of 90s hip hop. There's a clear pipeline from people's parents music choiced, to their kids sample choices. Case and point Ice Cube grew up hearing Funkadelic from his mom's car stereo.
No joke I could find literally every funkdelic album… except for this, I’ll look another time for it but I’ll give it a 3/5
A heavy and stodgy funk stew, if there was a path through this funky quagmire I lost it right about the second track in. There are far superior funk albums then this rambling funk monologue, a low ⭐⭐⭐
This was super groovy and incredible funk in the first half but then I got bored.
Soni think I listened to this album, when I went to go to the album page it didn't have the album so I listened to it somewhere I don't normally do, with that said it was if it was the real album pretty cool actually! I totally was just vibin with it and it was a straight up just funk album lol
It’s got some good beats but it’s kind of long and bloated. Feels less constructed as album but just one long Jam on songs which is kind of dull to my brain
Spotify wouldn’t let me losten
I wish this album had one other element or something going on besides funk. It's a great funk album, but im just not that interested in a full album's worth of it. Decent enough, but wish it was a little more musically complex. Top tracks: Groovallegiance, Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers), Into You
Dobra mi je ona Into you.
oki
Aight
Could only listen to one song because this album is essentially nowhere online streaming.
This album was fun but forgettable. I don't listen to a lot of funk, but I respect how formative it was in music history and how many things came from it musically. I wasn't in love with any of the songs, but they sounded decent enough. The instrumentation was nice and the voices all melded together very well - it just didn't elicit any real feelings from me. Also, I couldn't recall a single song once the album was over. Also, I don't know if anyone else is having this issue but I couldn't stream this on Spotify...
Nunca tinha ouvido nada parecido, não desse jeito, creio que eles tenham pegado várias inspirações da época, e tenham sido inspiração para gerações futuras, no geral bem interessante ver esse pedaço da história e da cultura na forma de musica.
Impossible to find. Listened to the Clinton administration version instead
I liked what little of this spotify has
I usually like Funkadelic, but this was just okay. A few songs are longer than feels necessary, which makes the album feel the same.
Funk. Not too bad. Sounds like this was a major source of inspiration for Prince.
Full album not available in Spotify.
This album sounded so aggressively 70's, and that's just not an era of music that speaks to me. Still, there were some very strong ideas here. My favorite moments were on tracks like "Groovallegience" when the bass just kinda seems to do their own thing, all while still keeping the heartbeat of the song driving. I dunno, I feel like this lands in a category of music where if someone told me it was their favorite album of all time I wouldn't fault them at all, even if I don't love it much myself.
Funk always sounds so strange to my ear since I listen to it so rarely. I love the vibes and the intentional care-free style of it. "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!" is my favorite song with its cheeky lyrics and rocking sonics, "P.E. Squad / Doo Doo Chasers" was also a great jam song. I really liked how I was advertised nutrition bars during it since this album isn't on spotify and therefore requires an ad-filled listening experience. Like every time we listen to an album outside our usual genre, I'm gonna play this safe and give it a 3.5 because I don't have much to compare it to. Since I liked The World is a Ghetto more than this and that was a 4, I'll round this down to a 3.
Clear elements of funk and has a fun cowbell. Picks up towards the end but pretty slow
It's funk. I'll give it a three but it'll be a 2.5 in my book because it was a little long for my taste.
[7/10] Definitely was not expecting this to scatologically beat out Butthole Surfers
One nation under a groove. Like the first track and the final couple however some of those middle ones were a hard old slog. Full respect for the whoever it was on lead guitar though.
preddddy good
Great music, smooth beats. a bit long. 9 out of 10.
I actually enjoy this more than Maggot Brain. If only they could keep themselves from taking a stroll down noodling street at least ever other time.
Achei bom
Echt funky meine Güte
the answer to the age old question 'who got da funk?'
Me aburrí, pero no fue terrible. Nota: 2.9
The lyrics of the first two songs are all about how funky the band is. Which would be a bit cringy if it wasn't undeniably true. In the middle it gets a bit weird. Overall too long, but it's a real foot-tapper for sure
Американский ни то рок, ни то фанк. Это не совсем моя музыка, но не смотря на это, она звучит достаточно интересно
It's good, but not on Maggot Brain level.
Nunca he escuchado funk, pero este álbum me ha mantenido estudiando sistema jurídico administrativo, así que bueno es. ¿Me lo pondría normalmente? No.Pero bastante slay
Can't say I love an 11-minute song about doo-doo but that's just me. The rest of the album is pretty fun. I prefer Maggot Brain ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
did anyone else have this problem? listen to maggot brain instead
I listened to this a ton in high school and college but I don’t think I was ever wild about it. Weirdly it seems to not be available on Spotify. Three stars from memory.
Fun but not my favorite funkadelic
Decent.
Had my feet tapping from the first note. Not usually the kind of music I listen to but I'm going to seek out more Funkadelic.
My inner voice during my trignometry class: Getting bored by all those changes of the sin waves? your life is truly fucked up. So what will happen if you change the "fuck" to "funk"? Me: it will still be as fucked up as it was. 3.5/5
The album wasn't bad at all actually in the last songs the looong guitar riffs were pretty insane so I really loved that and the rest of the album was catchy and good but that's not the type of music I'll listen everyday.
Really nice i hadn't heard of them "One nation under a groove" super catchy super nice "Into you" that voice is insane! "Maggot brain" guitar parts are really cool
It is very funky and I enjoyed it. But there is also a noticeable gap between the title track and the rest... the whole thing is just too playful to think too much or get serious about it. 3.5/5
I love the title track for this one, but the rest of the album didn't live up to that song.
Enjoyable but not quite what I wanted or expected. It's a lot more psychedelic and prog rock compared to funk in a lot of places and it absolutely has tracks that go on too long. Interested in trying some more from George Clinton but this isn't quite it for me. 11/02/25
Had to listen on YT and made it hard to really breakdown song to song what I really enjoyed. Overall very funky and psychedelic. Which makes sense given the bands name.
I hadn't heard this but I've heard Maggot Brain which is really good. I feel like I should like this more but there's something about it I can't out my finger on. It just feels like there's not much for me to latch onto. I think the stupid tongue-in-cheek lyrics and humour puts me off a bit. It just feels a bit stupid My issue could be the sort of repetitiveness or lack of tracks changing it up a bit, those make the album feel like it's dragging on. I wasn't even halfway through Into You but it felt like it should've been nearly finished. There's some wacky guitar soloing going on on that one but it's faded into the background and so doesn't feel like the song is really going anywheren maybe like songs that contain good ideas but weren't actually completed It's definitely well performed though Decent enough, just didn't click with me Highlights: One Nation Under A Groove
Enjoyed parts of this album - some interesting ideas. But it was also bit sonically abrasive at times.
Enjoyed this.
Ok album
Very Groovy But a bit short. But im Interessed in Hearing More Funk
In a nation divided by so many things only one thing can bring us all together … we ALL want the funk.
This was pretty fun to listen to. Very funky.
One nation under a groove
If you like long funk songs then this will be right up your alley. Admittedly, this is groovy as funk, but especially 'Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)' goes on for waaaay too long.
Cool. Much like Alec, this band understands that “The Funk” is a force of nature and that it cannot be defeated.
i will always dig these funk albums. give me some killer instrumentals and a beat to rock to, and its going to get at least a three from me. This one I don't think stood out to me as much as previous funk albums, but was certainly enjoyable to listen to and I had a good time with it.
Short and sweet
++: One Nation Under a Groove, Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!, Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers), Cholly (Funk Getting Ready To Roll!) +: Groovallegiance, Into You 7,6/10
Listened to this while playing Carnegie. I lost. A pretty darn enjoyable funk album. It grooves from the opening seconds, wasting no time. Not my favorite funk album, but still super fun!
Good and fun! Not too special tho
Funky stuff but that one poo song has weird lyrics
Not as funky as I’d expected
Gonna give it a 3/5. Don’t have anything creative or analytical to write.

I had this record in on vinyl, and it burned in the fire. It’s not streaming. It’s got good jams on it, though isn’t my favorite Funkadelic album.
Wow, this one was hard to find! Once I finally found a way to listen to it (YouTube), I started out enjoying it, but got bored fairly quickly. The songs are so long! I liked them, but was ready for them to be over a long time before they actually ended. Could be somewhat enjoyable as background music, I guess? Nothing really stood out to me though. 3/5
Really good album. Just not my genre. Probably would have been a 4 or 5 if I was into classic funk.
This was fine. Rating probably would've been higher if the songs didn't drag out so long. Also it's always kind of annoying when I get an album that isn't available on streaming.
Good but had to listen to a full 58 min video on YouTube lol
Maggot brain is echt 10x beter
Tasty
It's mostly missing from Spotify. Two of original 6 LP tracks available. Still I listened to it all. Title track is one of Funkadelic best and there are a couple of other great tunes. I hate the "Rock" tune and the other two are fillers for me - although still head-nodding mildly groovy. So it's a 3. Which is liking but not in love.
Funky, bubbly, hanging by the beach with a margarita - Great blend of melodies and instruments, catchy and upbeat - Electric guitar is standout - I can see it as a precursor/inspiration behind some modern R&B - Nothing crazy special, listenable but not quite desirable
couldn’t listen to it not on spotify
Gotta groove and jump through hoops to hear
Not bad at all! I could listen to this again. I just wish it was available to listen to on Spotify instead of having to track it down on YouTube.
Fun but not mad about it
Bit too funky for me, not my genre. Got a bit bored 😬 Enjoyed the first song
One Nation Under A Groove // Groovallegiance // Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad // 3.5/5
Not my fav Funkadelic album (Maggot Brain and Standing on the Verge both much better), but still solid
song by the same name is cool, but album not available on spotify
Dobrej funk, ale zas tak me to nevzalo
i didn’t mind it but i think two new genres back to back that are instrumental heavy was a little much. but this was fun! groovy! i see why the word groove was used to describe this haha
Slightly self indulgent but enjoyed it. Probably a 7/10
More R&B and less funk than I was expecting. Never really got into Funkadelic. File with The Pixies under bands I should have liked but never did.
It’s got a funky vibe to it but it also goes around in circles and gets stuck in its own groove for long periods of time. I’m ok with a couple of tracks of directionless funk but after an hour it gets a bit old.
This album is obviously a landmark in the funk/groove genre. It doesn't resonate with me the same as others in adjacent genres as I don't connect with the songwriting itself. There isn't a ton that feels memorable from a catchy standpoint. However, the vibes are immaculate. I read somewhere that it's "more progressive rock than critics like to admit" and I feel that for sure. Sometimes it feels like if Jimi Hendrix joined Pink Floyd. Unfortunately the repetitive nature doesn't vibe with me as strongly. But the bass and guitar playing and the groove generated by the drums make it engaging. The bass especially is just crazy good, not a ton of albums have that attribute but maybe in funk it's not possible to have a great album without great bass. For its instrumental mastery, vibes being created, bringing this kind of music forward, and the tight interplay of the band, along with what I'm sure was major influence on the genre, it's easy to see why this album is on the list. As far as something that moved me and makes me want to recommend it to others, it falls a little short of the others. I'm glad I listened to it, but I don't imagine returning very often.
Not as familiar with this album as Maggotbrain but still a good listen. I'm a fan of anything Funkadelic so my reviews will always be biased. I enjoyed hearing these earlier releases although some of the lyrics get a bit strange and a few of the songs are a tad too long. This is pretty standard for them though. 3.35 for the pure, uncut funk on this one.
This funktastic Main Invasion Force can get down no doubt. For most of this album, I pledged full "Grooveallegiance" to the Funkadelic flag. The Throbbasonic Funkgeetarists shred cheese all over those Rotofunkie Percussionatin' Thumpasaurian bready basslines. Pepper in a little Keybo' Dans. Salt it up with a sprinkle of the Synthezoidees. Smother it all with some Blamgusta Vocaloids gravy and top it off with a sprig of that Banjo'd Muthaplucker. Spark up a fatty before you dig in. Some songs a bit too long but I'd hit this again. Pass dat shit! 3.48
Out of the gate this album sounded really promising. One Nation Under A Groove is a really fun song with a great bass line and tons of energy. Unfortunately, it's also the high point of the album. The rest of the of it is OK, and has a couple decent segments, but overall it overstays its welcome by the end of it. I'm glad I got some exposure to George Clinton and Funkadelic between One Nation and Maggot Brain. I appreciate that they bring something different to the table. Their weird unique vibe is fun and while I don't think I'll come back to these albums I'll likely throw a couple Funkadelic tunes on in the future. 2.71 stars
The instrumentals like the bass are really fun - it’s a vibe album that will get you in a good mood and it’s very short! Easy to listen to - had a good time listening to it.
Almost got a 4 star but I think there are better Funkadelic album so given there aren't any 1/2 stars - so this one gets a 3 for me.
It was OK. I did like it better than his Parliament stuff.
I couldn’t find this one on Spotify so did my best to find most of the songs. Certainly interesting.
Fun but incredibly short? Not sure why I had to hear it
TIL fried ice cream is a reality! This is a perfectly fine funk album. The first half is better than the second half (which loses momentum), but the opening track "One Nation Under a Groove" is very fun. The band is clearly having a great time grooving together.
It's fun. Goes on a bit long on some songs.
Decent guitar riffs
Eigentlich 3.5. Bin eigentlich nicht so der Funk Fan, doch zwischendurch wurde ich durchaus vom Groove gepackt ;)
Sure, George Clinton's Funkadelic / Parliament P-Funk collective offers an important act in music history, and the title-track is a pretty groovy. The thing is, whether I'm right or wrong about this, I feel like Funkadelic's *Maggot Brain* and Parliament's *Mothership Connection* are enough to represent that particular corner of the music world in KY own list of 1001 albums you must listen to before you die. I'm snowed under with work today, and I don't have the time to return to the album in details (especially given that Spotify link is pretty incomplete and I only have a Funkadelic compilation at home), so I'll leave the door open to *One Nation Under A Groove*. But when will I have time to return to it? It would be nice if my nation was under that groove indeed and that album played in supermarkets when I'm doing errands. Unfortunately, it's mostly Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter these days... Bummer. 3/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums 8/10 for more general purposes (5 + 3) Number of albums left to review: the 80-ish extra LPs listed on this app, included because different past editions of the book have mentioned albums that have since been dropped in subsequent editions. Number of albums I'll keep in my own list: half, approximately Number of albums I *might* keep: a small quarter, approximately (including this one) Number of albums I won't keep: a large quarter
Unsurprisingly, very funky. Mid 70s. Some rock, some reggae. Chill. Quite boring, not unpleasant. Great guitar parts.
Fine
This was a fun album, with some good textures and crazy guitar action.
Note: Not available on Spotify. Had to go to YouTube to find this one. Like most Funkadelic, it's all over the place. I mean, it goes *extremely* hard into the depths of funkiness, but sometimes forgets to breathe. 11 minutes of the PE Squad can be a little much, after all. But, in general, it'll make you want to dance your stoned ass right off. Unexpected bangers: Groovallegiance, Cholly, Lunchmeataphobia
Trippy, title song was pretty goated, the rest was weird but pretty good
Some decent funk rocking. A bit odd in places, but still pretty fun.
Pretty funky.
Laid-back and groovy with a weird cult-y undertone.
"These tracks are not available on Spotify." So, I didn't listen. But given my tastes concerning the genre, It could never surpass a 3, so that's what I'll give it.
Heard songs from this many, many times on 6Music. It’s ok. Nothing more than that. I’d have liked it to be funkier.
Again, I forgot how the album sounds as I’m rating it. I seem to remember liking it a fair bit and it growing on me. I’m going to be a coward and give it a measly 3/5
Funkadelic delicious grooves, moved so smooth and boom... you're pregnant!
Funk ✅ Groove ✅ Meandering medley that takes a Pink Floyd turn✅
I’ve tried this kinda genre many times before and I’ve never really got that into it. It’s all a bit too ‘soul funk’ for my tastes. However, this album seems to have more of a rock fusion than others I’ve heard. The star on the album is the guitarist, with great parts and solos on ‘Who says a funk..’ ‘Promentals….’ and ‘Maggot Brain’ (although I’m not sure of the latter counts as being on the original album). However, other than those tunes the rest is a bit meh. Somehow there’s loads happening in the other songs, but they drag without much grabbing the attention.
This isn't on spotify, so I had to go to YOUTUBE. That's a demerit. I like the name Funkadelic. Alas, I am prejudiced against all 70s music. Song #1 gets pretty hype like 4 minutes in though. I like that they say the title in the song. And the f word!? was this on the radio? no, wait a second... it's the word "funk". genius! I googled george clinton and discovered he is NOT who I thought. I wonder who I was mixing him up with. Sorry, george. In general, this was OK, some fun moments but ultimately I just don't love electric guitars.
I could only find this as one long track on YouTube, so I felt a bit disconnected from it while listening, as the songs seemed to blur into one long song. That said, it was fine and I didn't mind it. I had no idea Funkadelic was related to Parliament so that's cool.
Non my favourite genre
Man, I'm so confused when it comes to the funk bands. I clearly need to do a deep dive. This album is great, but is it the best funk music? I'll tell you when you are older. - Joey
Didn’t listen now because I didn’t want to pay for it but I’ve heard it before and it is a good album.
Album 588 of 1001 Funkadelic - One Nation Under A Groove (1978) Rating : 3 / 5 Good album but it just isn't at the level of Maggot Brain, which is a favorite. It was a good listen but I likely won't be craving it again for a while. Doo Doo Chasers is a nice track.
3.5 stars. Funky! Standout is "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!"
Fav song: Into You Proper 70's funk is a little bit lost on me, but I can definitely appreciate what it is for the time period. Some of the lyrics on this album are WILD (especially the entire song which is basically an allegory for listening to trash music dressed up as taking a big poop).
I can appreciate the instrumentals on here but the songs as a whole are nonsense. I think all the lyrics were ad libbed on the spot. The last song they were trying to recreate the magic they had on Maggot Brain. It’s a good song but it doesn’t have the same power as Maggit Brain.
I found this after being directed to YouTube since it was not available on Spotify. I liked the title track, but the rest played a little long to me. Rounding up for the signature 70’s funky grooves and unique style, but I don’t expect to revisit with any regularity. 2.5/5
A very timely title. We need more groove in our lives these days and the funk factor on this one helps. I really dug this listen. The following lyric samples alone deserve a mention: -“A musical bowel movement designed to rid you of all mental diarrhea” -“the fear of being eaten by a sandwich” -“ ice cream is the reality” A good balance of Truth and Soul.
3.5
Was expecting it to be...funkier. Too much psychedelic? Really long songs, first one is the best one. Just okay. Note: found full album on youtube, as Spotify only has the first track available.
不错的funk
First track is very enjoyable, the rest sort of blends together for me. Overall an enjoyable listening experience, but not necessarily my cup of tea.
Well it was definitely funky.
Saved one song
Among the best funk around if you’re into that type of thing. I could be persuaded, but I’m not there yet.
easy listening, sad there's only three songs on spotify lol
Its got a groove, its fun and I like it! Some tracks may be a bit over-long but overall its not boring and has some style. Even though its not my favourite genre I appreciate the groove it evokes and the sounds it makes.
A brilliantf funk album, with a blend of rock and psychedelia all thrown in. Its a very enjoyable listen. Favourite song: One nation and who says a funk band cant play pop Least favourite: All great songs Album artwork: Cool cover
It's not available on Spotify.
Not on Spotify
OK ***
It was definitely a very funk heavy album. I enjoyed the first half a lot more then the second, but overall it was an enjoyable listen. I'm not sure I'd purposely revisit it, but I'd definitely not object to it being put on. Giving it a 3, because I'm rouding up the 2.5
Not good, not bad.
Cool funk grooves
Couldn't find it to listen to it
"The fear of being eaten by a sandwich" is a great lyric. This was fun! Bit more rambly and unfocused than I tend to like my funky music but I had a good time with it.
I like the funk genre, but not to listen to all the time. Some of the songs were enjoyable listening music, and songs like Promentalshotbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad is something I am not used to, but was an interesting experience. I liked Maggot brain a lot. The guitar work was real nice.
The album was unavailable to stream anywhere. I pulled several songs from it to listen to instead. It’s a cool album with lots of great talent. Funk isn’t my exact vibe but I was into it!
This was perfectly listenable to but didn't blow my socks off
I was tapping my foot, but didn't really enjoy this album as much as I had hoped.
Groovy
Actually liked this more than I expected to
this was not really my vibe, but it's masterful and very enjoyable
Me ha gustado más de lo esperado
Is it still funk if they don't use the word funk repetitively?
"Out to lunch with lunch meat" -- couldn't have said it better myself.
Music appreciated. Not in my preference genre.
zabavno
Clear nods to James Brown in the opening track, while also establishing a distinct funk identity of their own. This is done through the heavy layering of synthesizers and inclusion of sound effects that character the sound as more edgy, overt (including the funkin’ lyrics) and modern. This is NOT disco. Solid drum, bass, and guitar solos. I find the some of the use of synths to be excessive, or at least not that well balanced with the remainder of the mix. The lyrical stylings feel more of a social statement than political protest music. “Music to clean your shit by” sums it up perfectly.
As always with George Clinton - there is so much to like, but ultimately it's not focused enough to serve well as album listening experiences. 3.3
Perjantailevy henkeen ja vereen. Tätä groovea kuunnellessa jalka tamppaa aivan itsestään ja suu on hymyssä. Viihdyttävä.
A rights dispute means this isn't available on Spotify which is a shame. One Nation Under a Groove is a great song, maybe the quintessential funk song. This is the album that spawned 1,001 samples. Typical George Clinton ridiculous lyrics. Groovallegiance has a definite reggae influence. The lyrics continue to be a distraction to the music. Each song has gotten progressively worse. Prince was definitely influenced by Funkadelic and added real lyrics, that's why he's one of the greats. My kids come up with better lyrics about poop than Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers) has. The call and response of poop lyrics is so awful. One great song to kick off the album. Honestly this album would be better if it was all instrumentals after One Nation Under a Groove. The groove from Mac Ayres' Soon owes a lot to the instrumental PE Squad/Doo Doo Squad to end the bonus EP.
5/10 - There is something so interesting about how funk is the genre that says their name the most often. And whatever is in second is not even close. Overall this was pretty interesting, but not amazing, at the beginning and then by the end it was just a guitar solo for a while. Do not really want to revisit and the fact it is not on spotify makes that pretty easy to do.
Funky, but a little same-y after a while.
Bien
That's not my taste in musik. But ok.
It is groovy alright. And it is good vibes. But it does not really impress or stick that much.
funky
Some fun stuff on this one. Might enjoy more on a second listen Will I listen to again: 75%
Necesario.
This was a hard album to track down. In the end i listened to it on YT. Not a bad album. Quite smooth sailing with some funky tunes. Was alright man. but then, WOW. am i glad i stuck it out to the end. Maggot brain (was the live 10 min version) was the shit! Helluva song. That guitar. Damn, hendrix would have been proud of that. 10/10 that song for the guitar alone. Ive since listened to the studio version of maggot brain and i think i prefer the live version. both really good versions though.
Grooveariffic.
What a journey. This one is not licensed in the United States on streaming platforms, so proved to be hard to track down. I looked at a few vinyl and physical CD options before resorting to TPB. The music itself was fun, silly, and very human. Maggot Brain, in particular, reminded me a lot of Jimi Hendrix. Overall it was worth the work.
Good psychedelic funk album. Maggot Brain is an awesome jam. Would probably give it another star if some of the songs were just a bit shorter, seemed to overstay the welcome and get repetitive. Still grooved though.
