Reviews (page 6 of 11)

this is what riding journey into imagination stoned is like

Not the sound I would expect from what I have heard from Funkadelic, a lot more electric guitar riffs then I have come to expect. Very fun and chill album, good for cooking in the kitchen or grilling outside.

Fine stuff. Note to self; need to hear more.

It seems like they had fun making this album

fucking so good. unfortunately had to listen on youtube which had ads throughout and kinda messed up the listen. only not a 5 because of the live track at the end that weren’t up to the rest of the album’s standards

really digging this

Some great songs!

One nation, under funk

Fantastic album, found on YouTube

Muy groovy

I thought I always liked Maggot Brain better but this was very good too. More jamming. More rock.

one nation under a groove, groovallegiance, prometalshitbackwashpsychosis and maggotbrain

solid funk album!!

Wish this was on spotify. Didn't think I would be big into this but holy I was by the end.

Really enjoyed it. I do tend to have trouble with the longer jams but still good for what it is. Rating: 4.0

no está en spotify así q en su lugar escuché maggot brain :p iconic, así q esto es p-funk, funk+rock? banco

Favorite song: Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?! My partner wonders why their album "Uncle Jam Wants You" wasn't selected instead for this project.

George Clinton's Parliament/Funkadelic is one of my earliest and strongest musical influences. Shame this album is not really widely available for streaming outside of the generosity of one youtuber. I think it's also one of the only genres that integrates humor really well without sacrificing the artists being taken seriously. Fried Ice Cream IS a reality!! I think the first half of the album is stronger, and the album Maggot Brain remains my fave (unless you count Parliament's Mothership Connection - I prefer the p funk to what here sounds more like funk-infused psychadelic prog rock), but its a really solid album regardless that manages to showcase a wider range of musical ideas.

Let's get funky! The title track here just soars above the others in terms of its quality. These guys are funk icons and their pure funk will always be better to me that this hybrid of funk and rock. Having said that, this is still a very good album with some fantastic guitar work and great bass lines. Longest song title so far? I think so.

Good stuff. Especially maggot brain. Great album 4.2

Dope. Love this way more than PFunk, since each song seems to have a purpose.

plain and simple - george clinton is a funk master. maggot brain is one helluva groove.

Very annoying that this cannot be found in full on Spotify. Chased it down eventually and was glad I did because this is the kind of funk that needs to be heard, that needs to be appreciated loudly and happily. I felt united by the groove and believe we can achieve sonic harmony together.

Love it! Couldn’t listen on Spotify so had so trouble getting all of it

Very enjoyable to listen to Standout songs: Who says a funk band cant play rock Maggot Brain Lunchmeatphobia

4.22 per track. Wish I could give this 5 stars.

I like it!

Great groovy goodness. My highlights are the first three tracks.

Instrumentation is fun. Might go so far as to say funky. The lyrics are a bit lacking for most of it, but that's probably not the point w/George. Really wish you could do half stars. This would be a 3.5 for me.

Cannot help but move my body. Excellent production quality and arrangements.

Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers) - was great. I wasn't sure about each song as they started but at some point you start feeling the groove in each one.

Was a bit distracted for this listen but I loooove funk

I was bopping my head whole time

Classic.album. really enjoyed.

No longer on spotify :( listened to Maggot Brain instead

I'm liking these guys the more and more I hear. Was this album as good as Maggot Brain? Not to this listener, but I think I enjoyed just as much. Seems like they toned down a bit and a few times seemed to carry on a little long, but I am a fan! Really impressed with the guitar and to my surprise, it was Eddie Hazel. Regardless, the guitar really stood out and I thought was pretty amazing. True to their identity, a great mixture of funk, rock and soul. I wish this was on Spotify. I wish I could go back and enjoy their live shows. Funkadelic touches on all things I love about music. Very good album and very good listen. I'm giving a 3.5, but actually rounding up this time. 3.5

Was good!

They’re all so on the same page it’s insane

The best non-rock album that I listened so far. What an amazing display of musicianship. The only problem, is that this album lost me sometimes. One or two tracks made me feel quite bored. It would be a perfect 5/5. 4/5

This album was strange and hard to access - and I loved it!

excellent Funkadelic album. I'm under the groove

pretty solid, Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock?! was a standout track

Damn, I always the guitar on Funkadelic albums was great because of how much I've heard "Maggot Brain" praised, but actually hearing a whole album's worth of it is... Woo boy!

Usual P Funk goodness.

The thing about listening to an album like this is that you sign up for this sort of ethereal experience where once you lose that initial luster of a new soundscape, you start to lose your focus, and once you start to lose the focus, you miss out on the nuances of the performance – the guitar player working overtime to hit every note, the bass player who has to keep the rhythm, the drummer working so fast in syncopation – that once you finally get back into reality, everything that you’ve been listening to hits you like a truck. When you’re listening, it’s a vibe, and it’s a vibe you don’t appreciate until that moment that it ends. The soundscapes in this album do eventually overwhelm you, and your enjoyment of this album is truly dependent on how much of that soundscape you can stay engaged for. This album, sonically, is nothing short of incredible; every instrument mixed to perfection, every drum kick, every bass strum, every guitar solo just lies perfectly where it needs to. At some point, I got lost in it. However, I can’t give it a 5/5 just because at some points, I briefly woke up from that entrancing feeling. My best advice? Just let go. Put in some headphones, walk around, and let this album carry you. it's like a 4.5/5 though

Day 1 of trying new songs and this is a good start. A very different genre than the TS stuff I always listen to. Need to listen more to vibe more.

Damn they funky. Then I was like damn, they rock. Damn they songs go on forEVER.

I swear! 4/5

Nyt on kova funkkiplatta! 4/5

Every Funkadelic record is great. I actually prefer them to Parliament. The psych flare that Funkadelic mastered just does it for me.

One Nation Under a Groove- 8/10 Groovallegiance- 10/10 Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock- 9/10 The Doodoo Chasers- 8/10 Into You- 9/10 Cholly- 7/10 Think It Ain't Illegal Yet- 7/10 P.E Squad- 8/10 Maggot Brain- 10/10 76/90

-never heard of this band or album -another no spotify album which is always fun -oh this is FUNKY i am liking it -i’m going to be honest i really like funk music -based on this song title i think the funk band is about to play rock music -okay but seriously i am loving this song so far -there were SO MANY seriously insane magical guitar solos in this album -i ascended during all of them btw -overall what a FANTASTIC funk album holy MOLY -eassssyyyy four stars

sooo good i wish it was on streaming :(

We love you GEORGE CLINTON we love you PFUNK we love you SONGS ABOUT SHITTING!

Exceptional funk plus ripping rock. I think the poop jokes get a little tired, but these guys really have the music thing figured out. Great to have on in a hangout situation or BBQ

George Clinton is a boss.

I didn't care too much for this at first, but after finding a good audio rip and getting time to relax and actually listen, I enjoyed it a lot more. It's definitely weird and the mix seems odd in places. Much more mellow than I was expecting.

Generally, really good fun. Managed to be both cheesy and mature. Some moments felt repetitive and dull which is annoying an album that's over an hour long where you can definitely shorten it in places But the blend of rock and funk was great! Particularly loved the title track, Who says a Funk Band...., and Cholly, Also, the guitar on Lunchmeataphobia was amazing! Sounded like if Black Sabbath went Funk!

Surprise find! Too bad it's not on Spotify and only on YouTube.

- Not available on spotify ): 1st song. Bop, nothing special but a fun listen 2. Massive downgrade from the first song in terms of the hook and instrumental but still funk music is just so boppy it sort of redeems itself. Some afrocentric elements interlayed in this song. Nice little electric flute solo near the end there. *3. Amazing rock/funk fusion here, loved the guitar in this song, NEED this song on spotify. 4. the actual sound of this song, I love, the actual lyrics though? doodoo. I get what it's trying to convey but was there no better way LOL. The guitar again is just so good, the singing interlayed throughout the song is great. 5. repetitive kind of put me to sleep, liked the chorus 6. ^ **7. laid back in my chair closed my eyes and literally floated into outerspace, the GUITAR how many times have I said that for this album, I could literally sleep to this song, it was beautiful. 8. much more rock centric then anything else on the album, kinda cool not my favourite. Probably one of the first pure funk/funk rock albums I've listened to in my life, was a really cool listen. I can definitely understand the "cult-like" following this album has, I think it's fusion of both these genres is pretty incredible. I feel like this album has a lot of up moments but at the same time track 5,6,8 fell completely short for me and a couple others like 2 or 4 are a few elements away from being a great track. The GUITAR work on this album is incredible and blows everything else out of the water. For my first introduction into this genre, I think it was a great start and while I might not revisit this album too much, I think it has definitely gave me a wanting to listen to more funk records. Rating - //// stand out songs - groove allegiance with its melodic disco rhythm contrasted by the album's central theme of anti-establishment rhetoric makes for a really enjoyable listen. who says a funk band can't play rock might be one of the best songs I've heard in a really long time. it's hook is powerful. maggot brain transported me to another ether for 8 minutes, wow. enjoyed it a lot, definitely a few songs i'll be re-listening to 4/5

More from the funk masters. A god listen

This is funky butt loving. So good. Every part slaps, but it gets a little repetitive here and there.

much enjoy. yus.

As funky as it gets.

Pretty good honestly. I enjoyed the instrumentation. I was always tapping my foot to this.

Great album, obviously incredibly funky. Overall I thought this was a better album than Maggot Brain, although not as good as Parliament's Mothership Connection. Huge pact on popular music, particularly via hip hop sampling. I think some of the songs do run a bit long, but its still a solid 8/10 for me.

Nice and chilled for the weekend while doing some graphical stuff on the computer. No complaints about this, and while I had to listen to this on YouTube I think my stand out track that I really enjoyed was Lunchmeataphobia.

Woo hoo, Funkadelic. But is there any Parliament? And here we witness the early days of the P Funk. I can fully understand why a lot of James Brown's musicians left him for George's more free-form style of funk. This album demonstrates the coming together of your basic funk and the early psychedelic leanings of rock to form the embryonic Psychedelic Funk or P Funk as it is known. By the time George formed Parliament it had been refined into a polished gemstone. But here you can definitely hear its beginnings from the more chaotic Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad to it's more mellow cousin P E Squad. To me it's a great album culminating in the superb Maggot Brain. But not quite the finished item. Really torn here, in reality its about a 4.8. So do I upgrade it to a 5,or downgrade it to 4?

The lazy uncultured part of me after the first track wanted to say ' a loopy KC and the Sunshine Band' all whistles and funky shit, but I'm not that crass. I like it, funk and psychedelia mixed together, it works for me. The bands name is a bit lazy, a portmanteau of obviousness. Shame the Gallagher brothers weren't as lazy and had named themselves 'BeatlesBollocks', then they might have got the recognition they deserved. Anyway, these songs are looong, this is not a problem, they could have benefitted by being trimmed down by a minute or two maybe. Track 2 was great with its off beat rhythms. The 3rd was excellent. The 4th sounded like too many people wanting to share one microphone and arguing over it, which detracted from the very good instrumentals going on behind the ruckus over the mike. Track 5, I'll have a Babysham! (Persons of a certain age will understand) nice lazy groove and at least all the vocalists had sorted out their argument on the previous song and decided to harmonise. Track 6 was again bordering on a KC moment, but infinitely superior, love the big heavy bass! I chose to listen to the bonus tracks, the first seemed like a live jamming session, but the 2nd was proper hard rock funk! Liked that. The others didn't add anything special. The guitarist/s and rhythm section are so good, tighter than Clintons spandex pants im sure. There is a lot going on in these songs, too much to take in on a first listen, bit with repeated plays it will probably be fantastic. However this is not what I would choose to listen to of an evening, not sure when I'll listen to it again (but I intend to), as the songs don't lend themselves well to a dinner party setting (oh yes they don't happen). A low 4, in another universe George and I could have been good LSD buddies.

Funky and fun

Funky! Best tracks: Maggotbrain and Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis

Side one was significantly better for me than the second

It's just…very good. It isn't in my wheelhouse whatsoever, but you can't deny the talent and the attitude that runs through the album. The guitars really shimmer nicely and I love the way the voices intermingle. I think that promentalshitbackwashpsychosis enema squad is (a) the stupidest name for a song ever and (b) the highlight of this album.

Lets go! Funkadelic kicks. Love me some George Clinton and Bootsy. I don't know them aside from what I have discovered from myself - the hits, some weird stuff, but never put myself through a full album from the band. I will say they could shorten the tracks and I wouldnt mind, but I guess these songs are trying to get people to sweat on a dance floor. Review of reviews: People like funk a lot. Best Track: -- didnt get through the entire thing because i'm with my fkn family.

This album will rid you of your mental poopoo.

This should be more accessible.

4/5. This is hot.

I preferred this to maggot brain tbh

I love p-funk and this is a solid album. I like others better though.

Good guitar solo (psychedelic?)

One Nation Under A Groove sets out a clear manifesto: let's unite in dance. And though the manifesto may be noble (yes), well articulated (yes!), and political (YES!), it isn't funky (no). The lack of an opposition to overcome deadens the whole atmosphere. Only a third of the way through the album, on Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock! do Funkadelic introduce the necessary opposition, which sparks the friction and fracas needed to get down and get funky. It's well worth the wait.

if only this was on spotify.

Crazy funky goodness from the highly influential 70s outfit

The mothership has landed.

Funk music has a weird place in my heart. At it's best it is really dance friendly and uplifting. At it's worst it is meandering, monotonic and navelgazy. This album falls clearly in the former category, I really liked it. Favourite track was "Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock" which is just such a fun and groovy track all around. The rest of the album varies just enough in style to be interesting and fun throughout. I do however prefer the studio version of "Maggot Brain" opposed to the live version on here. Too bad this album isn't on Spotify.

Such a fun album to listen to :D I can't get myself to really want to listen it again, but I enjoyed it!

4/5. A lot more groovy and jam heavy than other Funkadelic albums. They have something they want to say and once they say it, they let the guitar speak. The only downside really is the 11 minute epic that seems to be trailing a little too long about poop and brains, like sure, I'll drink to that but feel like they got a little too drunk on it. The album totally funkin rocks just lost me in the middle there.

Classic funky good time

Very cool and funky!!!

Had a lot of fun listening. Lots of stuff like the high pitched synths I liked at their low volume. Those synths feel like they’re trying to come off as zany/wacky now like on a Tyler the Creator song, but on this album those kinds of instrumentals are intentionally subtle to not overwhelm and introduce a new style of drum machine and and synthy funk. Awesome guitar solo on whatever song we were talking about in the chat, love why can’t a funk band make a rock song. Hear a lot of influence in newer stuff today, no surprise George Clinton is on Wesley’s Theory on To Pimp A Butterfly.

Album was very good Cool to see the influence this has on Kendrick and Donald Glover stuff. Worth coming back to for production inspiration. Solo in maggot brain was crazy. Fried is cream is a reality

Funkadelic is the perfect name. Really great guitar. Hendricks vibes. Zappa vibes. Fun album, not too serious. Seems highly original.

Top 3: #3 #7 #10 (Bonus Track)

Unfortunately not available on Spotify in my region. Luckily youtube prevails. Good vibes.

Love anything Clinton

Quite nice. The solo in Maggot Brain is sick. My favorites are One Nation Under A Groove, Who Says A Funk Band Can’t Play Rock?!, and Maggot Brain.

A classic. Couldn't listen to it on Spotify, but I actually listened to a lot of it live this year. Found a few songs on YouTube.

Pretty funky. Not as unmissable and amazing as Maggot Brain or Mothership Connection, though, so 4.

This is my first introduction to Funkadelic, and funk in general. Definitely an aptly named band, as it is an equal parts mixture of funk and psychedelic weirdness. I love the loud bass lines. Favorite song? Probably "Who says a funk band can't play rock?!". I think "Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad" was one of the weirdest songs I've ever heard. The lyrics were all related to bowel movements, food, and cognition. Such a strange combination, but the metaphor kinda works? The outro bass line of Cholly is unbelievably groovy. This album really grew on me after each song. I normally don't like live songs, but the bonus live version of Maggot Brain was exceptionally good. Great guitar solo, great walking bass lines, and nice slow build. Would I listen to this again? Possibly. I can see myself exploring more of this kind of music, but it will take some easing into. It's an acquired taste for sure.

Love it

Funktastic

Incredible funk fusion album. There are times when it gets so full on that it sound messy, a little too self-indulgent. But the musicianship is great and it rock and it funks. Highlights One Nation Under a Grove Promentalshitbackwashpsycho enema squad.

Amazing vibe. Engaging and easy to get lost in without being obnoxiously front and center.

Funky.

Very funky

Not available on spotify but I listened to the titular track and it was funkadelic.

That first song makes me wanna roller skate. In fact, the whole first side is fantastic. I start to lose interest on side two, though, which is keeping this from a 5. I did their whole vibe here, which I think is more fully formed than on Maggot Brain. Fun stuff.

As it is written henceforth…that on the Eighth Day, the Cosmic Strumpet of MOTHER NATURE was spawned to envelop this Third Planet in FUNKACIDAL VIBRATIONS. And She birthed Apostles Ra, Hendrix, Stone & Clinton to preserve all funkiness of man unto eternity…

What a gem. Such a fun listen and the grooves are so great. And then there is Eddie Hazel's maggot brain guitar solo. One of my all time favorites. I'm very jealous or anyone who saw them in the 70s.

Not sure how anyone can not enjoy this. Eddie Hazel is a brilliant guitarist

Funk à l’ancienne avec des voix très belles et un mélange de grattes elec, des passages très tribaux

Milestone funk album complete with rhythmic fusions, eclectic grooves, and ridiculous lyrics. George Clinton performs at his madcap best as performer and producer. Listening to these tracks, it is hard to sit still and even harder not to laugh. "One Nation Under a Groove" is a subversive summit in Clinton's legacy as a primary driver of funk as a form.

was swinging a little

me gustó bastante la vdd 8/10 ese penúltimo que se llama p.e no se que 🥵🥵🥵

Niiice!

I liked it, mainly from maggot brain and so on, One nation under a groove has the original guach perry perro guachooooo.

Fantastic funk. Rich, dense arrangements and songs that stretch out and groove for as long as they feel like. Sometimes that means the back half of the song has guitar shredding and jamming. Sometimes that means the songs loop for a while (and occasionally drag on a little too long). Overall excellent and a lot of fun.

Expectedly good funk music. This band is a standard go-to when I want to hear music that sounds like this and now that I think of it is my first band I go to. Famously led by George Clinton and his wacky bass playing deity-like persona. One of the heavy metal bands I was in used to play this record a lot when we were partying / driving to shows / hanging out. It was a great respite from our usual metal albums. Solid 4/5.

Funky masterclass. Shame it's not on Spotify.

I feel as if I've always been a mere observer of the funk. More Jane Goodall than Tarzan. Funk, to me, is like watching a vivid cartoon, where the episode involves a house party: it hits so hard, even the house itself is grooving along. It's an odd record, but if you surrender yourself, you can truly enjoy the wide palette that the record covers: doo-wop, reggae, and some absolutely shredding rock. Favorite tracks: "Groovallegiance", "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!"

Funkè

No fooling around just funking around. Shame that the record's out of print but nice of Clinton to make available the best-paced project of his I've heard yet. If there's anything wrong, it's that moments sound like a greatest hits record.

Sucks this is only easily available through a YouTube playlist -- makes me wonder how the mixing would be on a consolidated format. Oh well... Album opens with the titular song. Funk that runs par for the course with little in the way of interesting elements. I found myself sort of bored honestly. Some solid bass lines through the outro, but otherwise forgettable. Groovallegiance, on the other hand, fucks. Groovy drum and bass with some slick guitar work throughout the mid-section. The basslines are so buttery smooth. Love the atmosphere they construct on this track. Who says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock is a driving ditty lead by a pulsing bassline. YouTube quality is straight doo doo, but I'm sure a better recording would put more separation between the instruments; as is, the snare feels super flat, which is a shame. Fretwork is once again fire. Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers) is an amazing centerpoint about which to root this album. Not only are the names and lyrics absolutely ridiculous in the best way possible, but the accompanying instrumental is awesome. Love the repeating guitar riff that leads us through the first half of the song and then opens up into a slithering solo with spoken chant overtop. This is the groove I was looking for. Into You and Cholly are both fine songs that got me groovin. I love the album Maggot Brain; unsurprisingly I also love this live rendition. Such a soulful song lead by beautiful virtuoso guitar work and some skittering drums. This is just a pure unadulterated jam. Rest of the album I had on in the background. Funky jams all day. Honestly if it weren't for the disappointment of the title track this would be brushing on a 5. Discounting for that, I'm giving this a 4 because Funkadelic fucking jams. A little cheap of them to double count Maggot Brain with the live cut, but honestly I can't really complain.

Pretty solid funky album. My favorite was P.E.Squad, Doo Doo Chasers ('Going All-The-Way Off' Instrumental) which was one of the bonus EPs. All of the songs were good though. I enjoyed this one! A soft 4.

I'm just getting down for the funk of it. The bass line in Grooveallegience is next level. I pledge allegiance to the funk for sure I don't know what I expected from a song called Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers). But now the name of it definitely makes sense. Solid guitar shreding behind some really strange lyrics Maggot Brain SHREDS! All of these songs names lunch me out so hard

Hmmm must be some licensing problems with this one. Can't seem to find it on Apple Music or Spotify. Bless up Youtube! The whole album isn't on there but there is a playlist with all 9 songs on there. Mad excited for this one. Title track slaps. Found myself singing along at work to it and just overall jamming. Groovallegiance is a baller ass name for a song. I pledge allegiance to the funk. Guitar in Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?! slays. This album is fun I'm into it. Personally I think the Doo Doo Chasers deserve more recognition. They're a musical bowel movement! Into You and Cholly close out a particularly solid album! I listened to the live Maggot Brain. Always makes me want to listen to John Frusciante's Empryean. What a beast of a solo.

Fun! Only george clinton can pull off a song called The Doo Doo Chasers

the second half especially is really good

Definitely a foundational album in the area of Funk Music. A great vibe, but a bit "too much of the same" in my opinion. Still, the respect this album deserves can't be denied. Worth a listen if only to appreciate the socio-cultural underpinnings of funk.

Classic

BEST SONGS: -Into You -Groovallegiance

I have never heard a Funkadelic album. It's a hole in my music knowledge. I wish this album was on Spotify, but alas, it is not. The standout tracks for me was the title track, "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Rock" and "Cholly." I am a sucker for R&B/Funk/Soul music with real instrumentation, so this really should be down my alley. Really interesting and great. I am going to explore more of the back catalog, at least that which is on Spotify, to see what else I may like.

Love the funk

Vannon uskollisuutta FUNKIN lipulle ja sille FUNKILLE, jota se FUNKKAA, yhdelle, jakamattomalle, FUNKIN alaiselle kansakunnalle, joka antaa FUNKIN ja FUNKIN kaikille. piti tuubista ettiä heh ja pistettä pois . the fear of being eaten by a sandwich tuo sen takaisin. hyvä albumi. Who says a Funk band can't play Rock! boonus biisi maggot brain live...the human music is incredible...

Couldn’t find on Spotify or Apple. So listened to Cosmic Slop instead. That was a good record. I assume this was as well. But I’ll leave the rating blank as I didn’t get to hear this one.

Cant find it, listened to maggot brain instead

Great funky songs and playing, especially from the bass. Wholly delivers on having “groove” in it’s title. You also gotta love the 11 minute shit simile song

Nog banger

It wasn't available on Apple Music.

Lekker vrolijk plaatje.

Here in the UK could only listen to 'One Nation Under A Groove' and its instrumental, good song

Some solid funk here. You can hear how this influenced Prince. Just wish Eddie Hazel was on this album. Still, a fine addition to the list.

Not as good as Maggot Brain, but still awesome nonetheless. This is best experienced as an entire body of work, played front to back to really take in the full onslaught of funk and all the goodness that Funkadelic has dripped into it. Who says a funk band can't play rock, or any other genre and style that they could ever possibly want to?

they really weren't lying when they said who says a funk band can't play rock. this is fantastic. Love the tongue in cheek lyrics and the mindbending instrumentation. best tracks: groovalleigance, who says a funk band can't play rock?!, One nation under a groove

Funky, i liked it!

Funky af

Inspired, very easy to listen to and get lost in, best version of maggot brain I’ve heard

Highly fun and enjoyable funk album to listen to. It's the perfect record for a late 1970s retro party. Musically it was a bit too samey for me, though, so it's 4 stars and not perfect 5.

Love it, I dig the funk for sure.

Very good, great musicianship and very upbeat

sykt chill

Pledge a groovallegiance to the funk. Do you promise to Funk the whole funk and nothing but the funk?

Must be one of the absolute highlights of George Clinton’s illustrious career. And so influential on contemporary music. Without Clinton, would stuff like Uptown Funk have ever happened? {Listen to Cholly (Funk Get Ready To Roll) - Uptown Funk would appear to be a direct descendant). Just like Clinton’s success was a direct result of the fact he was influenced by the golden period of funk that preceded albums like thus one - by James Brown (who lost band members to Clinton - principally the great bassist, Bootsy Collins) & by Sly & The Family Stone. And also influenced by the greatness of Hendrix (Who Says A Funk Band Can’t Play Rock?!). This is a terrific record.

Pretty solid funk mixed with progressive rock.

Classic

I had a super hard time finding the album for some reason? I got to listen to the tune with the album title though and I did like it a lot. Tons of early hip-hop and EDM influences I hear. The production is okay though compared to some other albums from the time period it doesn't compete for the best. Inspiring stuff.

A lovely funky album. Really improves the mood from punching numbers in a spreadsheet on a Friday. Favourite tracks are One Nation Under Groove Grooveallegiance Also my favourite album cover so far.

Groovy baby

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: One nation under a groove

Great album!

Frustrating that this isn't available on Apple Music, or I'd want to revisit this a lot more. It is funk at its best, just amazing vibes, incredible instrumentation, and so catchy you don't even realize the lengths of the songs. The title track is incredible, as well as Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock, and I adored the bonus track lunchmeataphobia as well. I'd heard and loved maggot brain in the past, so I was very excited to come into this one, and my high expectations were definitely surpassed. Funk isn't a genre I can put on whenever, but this is where I'd go if I want some of it. Hope it makes its way to Apple Music soon.

Funking love it.

Not really my thing, but it does what it says on the tin.

Hard to find the album but listening on YouTube was good enough. The last song was very chill and groovy instrumental and I loved it

Really enjoyed it.

Huh. Maybe I do like funk. Not all of the songs were available on the album so I patched together a Funkadelic experience and did not regret it. Grateful for this listen.

Overall amazing funk album, track 4 and 5 can be slightly improved I think but still as one of the best funk albums. Favourite tracks: one nation under a groove, who says a funk band can't play rock.

FUNKADELIC FOREVER KILLER TUNES

Groovy sensation. Funkadelic's best album because it is the perfect balance of detailed art and sheer joy, even if it leads to a couple repetitive tracks. A great record.

Was hard to find this one on streaming services, but damn is it funkalicious. 4/5. Favorite Track: Groovallegiance

Standard 70s funk - which means its great fun, obviously.

“A musical bowel movement… designed to rid you of moral diarrhoea” Funky as funk. Instrumentals at the end were decent, but lacked the funk we were fed in the first half and dropped it down a peg for me

som tri

Starts really strong. Gets a little jam bandy at the end. Not a bad listen.

A fun and energetic album, gets a bit repetitive at times but it’s got great vibes

This album seems like it's meant to be played in full at a dance club. I really like the bass and guitar work. It gets a little repetitive in some places but other than that I don't have any real criticisms. This isn't a genre I have a ton of experience with and I don't know if I'll go out of my way to listen to this album in full again, but I had a good time with it today.

Not a fair rating as Spotify had blocked nearly the whole album.

After listening to 500 or so albums, I've really come to appreciate creative, distinctive sounding artists that march to their own beat. Funkadelic is one of those bands. This is such a deeply joyful and fun ride of an album. It's groovy and irreverent and downright ridiculous at times, like all the best funk is. It's an exercise in excess, built with richly textured sounds, stellar musicianship and some of the best guitar work ever put to record. Not on Spotify, but easy to find on YouTube. Fave Songs: One Nation Under a Groove, Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!, Cholly (Funk Getting Ready To Roll!), Groovallegiance, Into You

I really enjoyed this album. A great one. Sucks I couldn’t enjoy this on Spotify or Amazon. Had to listen to this on YouTube and painfully hear ads everything song. Even with that I still enjoyed this great album. Not gonna add any songs to the plays list. I will still give this a 4!

Already here for this.

Great, rambling funk rock from the master.

Today's album was a weird one to fit into a genre. It was funk, rock, psychadelica, and soul all seamlessly mixed into a fantastic listening experience! Funkadelic started life as a sister act to George Clinton's doo wop group, the Parliaments. Funkadelic is where all the experimentation happened, whereas the Parliaments stayed true to the funk genre. It is said that the name Funkadelic came from the fact that most of the inspirations for their music came from LSD trips. This makes sense, given some of the song titles. Notably: Lunchmeataphobia and Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis. The musical talent in this band is amazing! Stand out props to Michael Hampton for blowing the roof off of the place and shredding guitar licks in the song Maggot Brain! Overall, a great album! Will definately listen again! I had to find the album on YouTube though because Spotify doesn't have it for some dumb reason. Favourite songs: Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!, Maggot Brain /Chant (Think! It Ain't Illegal Yet!), One Nation Under a Groove, Lunchmeataphobia (Think! It Ain't Illegal Yet!) Least favourite songs: Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis / Enema Squad (the Doo Doo Chasers) 4/5

Inspired a thousand samples!

Excellent funky, throbbing, rock, groove music. Heady, heavy, thick. Love it

This exercise has helped me realize just how much I like funk. The stankier the better - and this is plenty stanky.

A really nice and exciting combination of funk and rock! The album sounds very fresh, despite being almost 50 years old. The funky flow of the tracks, together with rock-sounding guitar riffs and solos is providing plenty of fun. But what separates this record from any others is just one song - Maggot Brain. It is one of my favourite songs of all time. The version on this album is a little bit different than original, which I find supreme. Still, the atmosphere of the song, slow tempo, extraordinary solos and melodies, every version of this song will be on top of everyone's lists (in my opinion). Actually, in comparison to this track, I don't find the rest of the album that attractive, but the bar is set very high on this one. Maybe that's a bit unfair, but for me it's going to be Funkadelic=Maggot Brain forever.

Only 2 songs were listenable!!! the rest were blocked! Lucky for me i own the album!!

Phenomenal album. Not a single bad song and one song in particular I thought was amazing and gave me goosebumps with that guitar: "Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!" I can see how this album must have been transformative to the music scene at the time it was released.

So good.

Sadly this was not available on Spotify or Amazon Prime :-(

As usual, very funky. Great album by funkadelic. Clinton is a legend.

Was only listen to a few tracks since the majority wasn't available on Spotify. Pleasant to the ears but this genre has been overplayed recently in my area so there wasn't a surprise factor.

4/5 Great. Classic Funk. Best Track(s): One Nation Under a Groove, Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!, Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers), Into You, Maggot Brain (Included on Bonus EP), Lunchmeataphobia (Think! It Ain't Illegal Yet!) (Bonus EP) Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers) also wins the award for the most bizarre song title ever.

Funky AF, as it should be.

My first introduction to funk! Loved it :-)

Lace up dem skates and get funky wit it!! get on the good foot!

Not spending a ton of time with this...can't really figure out why this album is considered better than others by Funkadelic. It's a bit more jam-based, I guess. More "grooves" and sick instrumentals. Great sense of humor. Dancier, certainly. It's good. But I don't know. I kind of prefer Maggot Brain and Standing on the Verge Of Getting it On. Maybe it's because this, as a late-70s cut, was dancier? Also, it appears to be the best performing Funkadelic record which tells something of the story. Whatever the case, I'm probably more likely to revisit other P-Funk records. But still very groovy, indeed. I'll give it a 4 just because I think it will grow on me with time.

Really fun, super creative. Way more variety and just plain quirkiness than I thought there would be coming in. I was thinking a strong 3, but the guitar solo on the last track converted me to a totally new religion.

I like da funk.

Great funk rock, love maggot brain

This album is super awesome

7/10 Honestly could be better (or worse) because it’s my first album using this website. A lot of solid tracks, with a couple of great ones. I havn’t listened to a lot of funk, but I am intrigued and exited to listen to more.

Could only listen to title track on Spotify

Arguably one of the greatest funk jams of all times!!

Funk is good.

Groovy stuff, funky rhythms, and surprisingly inventive melodies. Feel like it earned it's. 4/5

Funky & fantastically arranged. These are some skilled & talented artists, and I can hear where Prince got a lot of his sound from. I've just added this album to my library. 4.5

It funking rocks hard

Was looking forward to this one but not on spotify. Will try to listen to it some time. Got it now. Really good except the toilet song.

Really cool album. Too bad it isn't more accessible since you can't find it on Spotify. Favourite songs from the album: One Nation Under Groove, Lunchmeataphobia (Think! It Ain't Illegal Yet!), Maggot Brain

When funkadelic starts talking about flushing out the mental diarrhea, I felt that. 4.5/5

A fun Monday morning album. Not on Spotify, had to use YouTube.

Bel sound degli anni '70 :) Lo ascolterei ancora.

In generale non sono un amante del funk, ma devo dire che ho apprezzato molto l’originalità di quest’album, soprattutto per il sound che ricorda molto Frank Zappa.

Extremely funky album. This inspired tons of music moving forward and I'd be shocked if this hasn't been sampled hundreds of Times since it's release. Very awesome album all the way through

Maggot Brain is the netter record *****

The magic of 70's funk. I loved it.

Shame this one isn’t on Apple Music because I love Funkadelic! George Clinton was just such a genius - he was excellent at finding perfect roles for every instrument. Really cool record that only gets 4 stars because of its unavailability and because it isn’t quite as good as Maggot Brain.

Psychadelic. Must listen on next mushie trip.

Another band like Gil Scott-Heron that I've wanted to explore more of, I love Maggot Brain and didn't really know what else to check out by these guys. This was a really fun listen, Promentalshitbackwash... was a great track despite the name Will listen again

Couldn’t find the complete album. But Funky single though.

lo confieso, la de 10 minutos no la he escuchado, todas las demás me han gustado mucho, no es mi estilo del todo, lo escucharía en momentos específicos pero eso no le resta valor.

There's so much going on in pretty much every one of these songs - yet it doesn't seem messy or scattered. Each part, each instrument, each voice - sits just right in the arrangement and the mix. Sure it's funky, but in many (most?) places I'd call this rock - even progressive in parts? there are a lot of complex musical passages in here to keep the interest up just where you might think it's about to become repetitive. Killer lead guitar almost throughout the entirety of the record. Contains more than enough weirdness to make it classic Funkadelic yet is oddly accessible, even if to my ears there was absolutely nothing that could have been a hit single (although from online accounts this was their biggest selling album so what do I know). Fun and great party (or probably stoner) music :) 7/10 4 stars.

This album is literally what I think of when I hear the word funk. I can't really describe it beyond, "it is just so funky". Great album.

Pretty much what I think of when I think of funk. This album somehow feels retro and futuristic at the same time in the best way. Love it.

Good album, good bass lines and harmonies, solid jamming, worth another listen. Just wish it was easier to find now that it’s out of print

One Nation Under A Groove - 5/10 Groovallegiance - 9/10 Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock? - 10/10 Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers) - 10/10 Into You - 10/10 Cholly (Funk Getting Ready to Roll!) - 10/10 Lunchmeataphobia (Think! It Ain't Illegal Yet!) - 8/10 P.E. Squad/DooDoo Chasers (”Going All-The-Way Off” Instrumental) - 7/10 Maggot Brain (Live) - 9/10

Had to listen on YouTube so no idea as far as which songs I liked most, but definitely enjoyed the funk. Heard a lot of the west coast rap origins within this album too, since P-Funk was highly influential in building that sound.

Katten det svänger!!

An enjoyable bit of Funk Rock. Favorites: "One Nation Under a Groove", "Groovalegiance", "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!"

Protomatic or whatever that DOO DOO squad song is goes crazy. Pretty fire all the way through. Cool version of Maggot Brain. The bass and guitars are on point.

Great mix here of rock with the funk. As the one song says "who says a funk band can't play rock?" It's obvious where bands like Fishbone & RHCP get their chops from. The guitar solo on Maggot Brain is aMAZing. All hail Funkadelic! Reviews do talk about their owing a lot to progressive rock. I don't know if I see that as much. I see them owing more to jam bands than anything else, longer rock solos and instrumentals are not necessarily only linked to progressive rock. I mean, live versions of "Dazed and Confused" go on (and on and on...) for a half and hour. Even with that, it was really good. I had it on on a long car ride, but I did not get a chance to really *listen* so I listened to it again and really appreciated what was going on there. Definitely one I will come back to. Maybe a 4.3 or 4.4, one that is going on the list to purchase.

Really solid. So much funk, great blend of guitar and other instruments. I really gotta go out and listen to more of George Clinton's work. If anything, the tracks didn't all need to be so long because they didn't vary that much as the songs went along. Still, the title track is a beauty. Groovallegiance has a cool reggae sound and these guys are absolutely right on Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock (they just kill it). The 4th track is annoying with the echo singing and scat motif so it's hard to enjoy the really good guitar work. Into You and Cholly bring it back though not quite as good as side one. I'm not sure I really count the bonus tracks but Maggot Brain has quickly become one of my favorite guitar solo songs of all time. The recorded version on the album of the same name is amazing (so much emotion in Edward Hazel's guitar). And then the guitar work in Lunchmeataphobia is soooo heavy - love it. Waffled between a 4 and 5 (song length and hard to listen to track 4 vs. giving serious weight to the awesome bonus tracks).

Funk-rock. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

Effortlessly funky and cool. There are just so many influences going on here and in turn it influenced those after it. A great sound.

This review for one nation under a re-groove since this album is hard to find

I don't know what I was expecting but this album is insane. Like, made by people I'm pretty sure are actually insane. Also... kind of a jam?

Just what it says

Funk-rock. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

This is not a reviews, but Id like to read about the album @ wikipedia One Nation Under a Groove is the tenth studio album by American funk rock band Funkadelic, released on September 22, 1978 on Warner Bros. Records. Recording sessions took place at United Sound Studio in Detroit, Michigan, with one song recorded live on April 15, 1978 at the Monroe Civic Center in Monroe, Louisiana. The album was the first album to include keyboardist and frequent songwriter Walter "Junie" Morrison. One Nation Under a Groove was Funkadelic's most commercially successful album, reaching number 1 on the Billboard Magazine Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, number 16 on the Billboard 200, and being certified platinum in the US. It reached number 58 in Canada. It was one of the band's most critically lauded albums, and ranks at or near the top of many "best album" lists in disparate genres. The album was later featured on Vibe magazine's 100 Essential Albums of the 20th Century list. The album is ranked number 177 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time in both 2003 and 2012 editions, before moving to number 360 in the 2020 edition. The album is listed as one of the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Really fun album to listen to. Super dance-able and still has some meaning behind the creative lyrics. I just wish it was on Spotify so I could come back to it easily. 7/10

Like damn, yeah, cool and funky and good

tema la taille de la note que j’aurais mis si j’avais pas du l’écouter sur youtube

Love this, superb funk/rock blend

Belle découverte. Visiblement une forte influence sur Prince.

Enjoyed a lot of this, got a little tired of it in places. But it does contain one of my favorite lyrics of all time, “The fear of being eaten by a sandwich.”

Pretty good, though I did not like it as much as Maggot Brain. The presence of a live version of Maggot Brain as a bonus track on this album made this even more evident.

this is great, funk music but every songs tries to really put something new out. Opening track is just a great song and the rock and roll one is cool too

"One Nation Under A Groove" is tirelessly energetic, relentlessly funky and has to be one of the best parties of the 1970s. It radiates positivity, optimism and fun for most of its running time, at the hands of George Clinton and the vast roster of incredible musicians. The album was released originally as a 40 minute set before a bonus EP was added with a great live edition of "Maggot Brain": I've focused just on the original LP here. For its entire seven and a half minutes, the title track never lets up. From its bouncy bassline to the various vocal hooks rippling through it, it's infinitely danceable and impossible to resist. Next, the sprightly "Groovallegiance" brings some levity (Bernie Worrell knocking it out of the park with an uncomplicated keyboard solo, and Clinton with some beautiful falsetto in the verses). "Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock" is another prime cut: a Hendrix-esque riff transforming into a celebration of musical inclusivity and genre diversity. The band pull off the amazing feat of stuffing the arrangements to the rafters with overlapping lead parts, flourishes and production tricks, but leave room for spontaneity in the energetic performances. As an ensemble, they lock together perfectly and keep the songs feeling fresh throughout, despite the length of many of them. There's also a great sense of humour and playfulness running throughout the whole record, but the scales only tip slightly too far with "Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis", the only place the record loses some credibility for me. This jam is long and unfocused by comparison, in an awkward jumble of spoken word prayer with the makings of a lovely soul ballad in the background. I'm too prudish to enjoy hearing about a musical bowel movement to clear my mental diarrhoea. Whether they thought of it as a novel metaphor, a parody of evangelism or just a joke, it just brings down the impact for me. Despite this, though, as a whole it's a sheer delight. The power of Funkadelic is such that they're enough to make you believe fried ice cream really could be a reality.

This was just fun. It’s been years drive I listened to a funk album. This was a great one to listen too.

This is not my favorite Funkadelic album, but that being said, this album is still pretty great. It opens strong and features call backs to earlier songs and lyrically expands the George Clinton universe a bit more. This album is joyous and lighter than Maggot Brain yet still has some absolutely phenomenal bass lines and arrangements.

Greatt

My sort of genre ! An interesting mix of tunes, my favourite being the 1st track of course. Consequently has to be 4* I think.

Fuuuuunky as hell

I got to see Parliament Funkadelic in the early 2000s. Was epic, but I don't think I fully understood the history of the group. This Funkadelic album did a lot for music a the funk scene. They made it fun, while also addressing some issues. A great live version of Maggot Brain, which (to me) is the best song they've produced. It's just so dense. Rarely do I sit down and really listen to a Funkadelic album front to back and I wasn't sure if I'd really enjoy the whole ride. I did. I did enjoy the ride.

Okay, I can dig this. The one about poop was a little weird, but overall a funky little record.

Groovy baby

An enjoyable funk album with some of the better elements of disco music. I like that the overall vibe is lightweight and even a bit humourous, with an emphasis on FUN (perhaps even tongue in cheek). I loved things like the doowop backing vocals on Groove allegiance and the song titles themselves. Overall I felt like I was listening to an album length version of Sly & Family Stone 'Dance to the Music', which is a good thing!

Aside from the overused funk/groove wordplay, and being about 20 mins too long - I enjoyed the album.

Nice album funk, quasiment un côté progressif dedans qui rend ça intéressant.

Damn! Pretty cool. Songs are kind of long though. Found El Michels Affair after listening to related songs.

Cool, funky, of course groovy and a lot mellower than I anticipated. Probably my first run at listening to an entire Parliament album. Good+.

Pretty cool old funk album. Probably would've been a 3 or 3.5 for me, but the final groove on Maggot Brain to end the album was so sick it pushes this one over the line to a 4 for me! front and back cover artwork also whip ass.

Well, I didn't realize how much I enjoyed funk and disco until I started listening to this album list. This album is just delightful to listen to.

Excellent funk

Funk con bastantes toques de rock.

They had me at "Musical Bowel Movement". I'm going to need George Clinton to resolve all of the license issues he has with our go-to streaming services, because this thing slaps and slaps hard. As of this writing, the only way you can listen to this album in its entirety is on YouTube, which, is fine I guess. I seriously considered buying a physical copy of the album on vinyl or CD. Maybe that's what George Clinton wants from all of us. If that's the case, we shouldn't argue with the Godfather of Funk.

Funkabbestia, davvero un gran bel groove.

Excellent - other than the title track i'd never given Funkadelic much attention. Some fantastic guitar action going on both lead and bass! Will be revisiting for sure and it may even get added to the vinyl wants list!

Very funky, and very good

Great funk album with prog rock influences Favorite Track: One Nation Under a Groove Relisten: Yes

Alot of fun to listen to

Fried ice cream is a reality!

I like the funk

Outstandingly funky, but of course it would be. Entertaining, eclectic and electrifying.

This was fun and took some unexpected detours. If you came here for funk (and let’s be honest- of course you did) you won’t be disappointed. But the band plays rock just as well - even getting into prog rock territory on Side Two of the album! Fave tracks: “One Nation Under a Groove” “Lunchmeataphobia (Think! it ain’t illegal yet!)” “Who says a Funk Band Can’t play Rock?”

pretty good. i found it interesting how many elements of hard rock this incorporated, but i'm not sure if i liked that. 7/10

7/10. Funky

Worth the odyssey it took to find it

Full funk, with plenty of long tracks so you can feel the groove all the way through. Only available on spotify and youtube, oddly. This is a high 4 star album for me.

I definitely like this. It felt more energetic and and varied than other funk I frequently come across. another one where context and recent albums come into play. It's a 3.5 for me, but when I compare it to the Parliament from the other day, I liked this a fair bit more. I think I'll bump it to a 4 because of that.

Yeah this was very funky and had some great tracks in there, also my favorite song title ever

I was surprised to learn that Eddie Hazel had nothing to do with this record. The P-Funk roster is DEEP. Obviously this is funky, but there's a prog rock thing happening here that's super interesting. A couple of the tracks (especially the bits with the repetitive call and response) fell flat for me. Best track: One Nation Under A Groove

Fantastic funk with psychedelic prog rock leanings.

Funky! A little too funky at times - I mean, not every word in the song needs to be, or rhyme with, "funk" - but otherwise really fun. The back stretch of the album lost lyrics altogether and went down the path of awesome solos.

I honestly didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did. Funk and rock fused into something wonderful. Energetic and kept me going throughout the work day.

Groovy, still wanna get funked up

This is great, just what I'd expect from Funkadelic.
