Reviews (page 5 of 13)
Wow how have I not checked out lorde before this album is so great
3.5 - roundup to 4. I’ve only ever listened to single songs off the album. I e joyed it much more as an album. I love lorde’s style and rhythm. I’d definitely listen again.
I thought this was a Madonna album about her daughter. Turns out those online IQ tests I've been taking might have been telling the truth after all!
I wish there weren’t so many ballads because wowwww the loud synth tracks are amazing
Lordy Dordy this is good. It's a really, really atmospheric and well produced album, and Lorde's voice is stellar in parts. She straddles the line of how much breathiness is too much breathiness really well. The instrumentation is also very good. Pop really had a moment in the 2017-2025 era, with regards to female vocalists. All of them are destined to live in the shadows of Taylor Swift, who can't really hold a candle to people like Lorde, Phoebe Bridgers or Lana Del Rey. Weird, innit.
As someone who’s grown up in this 2000’s/2010’s pop era, I find some of the really bad albums on this list easier to listen to than the pop that’s oversatured my listening tastes for virtually my entire life. This is objectively good, and Lorde has a great voice, but something about this modern style just makes me impatient very quickly due to how much I wanna branch out from this. Reading the top review is funny though, considering I’m a millennial who has King Crimson as one of their favorite artists of all time. So maybe they were onto something there.
Intriguing and fresh. I enjoyed this much more than anticipated.
I enjoyed it a lot. Never really listened through the whole album. I also love the remix of Homemade Dynamite. Even more than the OG tbh and i always thought she said don't shit up with homemade dynamite. Cuz you could think that homemade dynamite could be a metaphor for lies but nevermind lol. (3.5/5.0)
Okay Lorde I hear you. Very big Bjork vibes in her style of singing. Glad to have pop that wasn’t 2000s RnB fusion. Felt very unique.
I liked how this album wasnt doing too much, it wasn’t overwhelming and a was great listen. I didn’t think I would like it much but I actually really enjoyed it.
It’s good. You can hear a Kate Bush influence in places. A bit much of the Antiniff touch, but it stands up on its own. Needed a few listens to like this one. 3.75 stars.
I moderately like this one. I think Solar Power is the superior Lorde album but I enjoyed this as an overall listen. I liked Sober and Supercut
Good pop album
I had not really had a lot of exposure to Lorde, although as they explore their gender I have become much more fascinated. Yet listening, really listening to them is a nice experience. I don't think this is pop or some form of dance contemporary radio play music. It is more of a hybrid folk. With deep and meaningful lyrics and a more singer songwriter quality than the typical (not bad in any way) more common stuff. That is the vibe I got at least. I would say musically this is a solid three star album, although because it is deeper in so many ways I will boost it a point.
i enjoyed it! awesome pop record, loved the lyrics with the production. 7.5/10 for me
Good album.
Love it
Espresso on the depresso pop. Like a modern day pop goth this was her highlight before forgettable returns
Første lyt var lidt kedeligt, men albummet åbnede sig op over weekenden. Måske især gennem min ældste datters Billy Eilish fan øre.
Hyvää poppia, hyvät instrut. Tunnelmallista ja diippiä. Elektropoppia ja pianoballadeja. Lorden ääni sopii kappaleisiin hyvin. Parhaat: Green Light, Supercut, Liability
I only really remember Lorde from her big hit Royals, so I was not familiar with this album heading into it. The opening song Green Light (I recognize this one and did not realize this was Lorde before) is epic, starting slow with the piano before building into a poppy house rave. I'm surprised Love Is Blind didn't pay out the ass for this song. It's a banger. The beat on Homemade Dynamite feels like something you'd hear with Nelly Furtado or a similar artist. Another really strong song here. Love the deep emotion on Liability. It's a short, simple, but powerful song. Supercut gives Taylor Swift vibes...*checks the producer credit*....ah, that makes sense. Wow, this was a lot better than I was expecting. Really solid structure and production. There's probably more depth to discover with some of the lyrics on songs like Sober and Liability. The hit pop songs are really strong. Based on 2 listens, I think this is safely in the 4 territory and a High 4 at that. There were a couple spots in this album that didn't work for me, but overall this was really good.
Really great pop album. The “icy” vocal effects are cool and felt influential, inspired a lot of other artists. This was antonoff production IIRC.
Unexpectedly really good! 4.5 stars for me
Great album, needed another listen and there’s more bangers
Ooh, this has got to be the first "they're younger than me!" artist on here. I like Lorde, although I'm not convinced she's top-1001-album worthy. But as far as Jack Antonoff-produced pop girlies of the 2010s, we could do worse. 'Green Light' was already in my liked tracks playlist, but I'd never heard this album in full before. Lorde has a unique "husky falsetto whisper" voice, which ought to be a good thing, but for some reason (sexism? maybe) I find it kind of annoying. All the tracks feel samey to me because of it. This album is the rare case where I like the music a lot (pop electro) but the vocals are not my favorite! Kinda like if someone made a Macy Gray ~ Bleachers ~ Ben Folds mashup (D:). I also thought this, from wiki (about 'Writer in the Dark') was hilarious: "the singer said she felt she made the song unique by implementing words such as "pseudoephedrine", which she said would work better in a hip hop song; she enjoyed taking standard forms and putting "spiky bits on them". Reminds me of my students trying to seem edgy :') I realise it seems like I'm being pretty negative, but as a collection of singles, I like almost every song here. I just don't want to listen to them all at once! Highlights: 'Green Light', 'Liability', 'Hard Feelings/Loveless', 'Supercut'
Enjoyed this one. She's not the best singer but she doesn't have to be for this style of music.
I just know Taylor Swift was seething when this album came out.
This was great. I've always liked Lorde, and this album had a great vibe to it.
I've listened to this before and thought it was fine but really loved it this time around.
Весёленькая музычка, бодрая, можно иногда послушать. 6,5 из 10.
Good sad song
Never listened through a full Lorde album before this, but I was pleasantly surprised. Lots to like here.
One of the more recent entries from the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die list, Melodrama by Lorde delivers a fresh, emotional take on modern pop. I remember when Lorde first emerged, but I don't think I had properly listened to her music until now. I was genuinely looking forward to giving this a proper listen. This is a fine, polished pop record with excellent production, catchy songs, and a strong vocal performance from Lorde. Although modern pop isn’t usually my style, I genuinely enjoyed experiencing this album. Favourite Songs: There are several standout tracks here. "The Louvre" was a particular highlight, blending dreamy production with raw, intimate lyrics. I also loved "Supercut" and the heartfelt ballad "Liability." Overall, it’s a consistently strong collection of pop songs. Least Favourite Song: There really isn’t a bad song on the album — every track feels carefully crafted and meaningful. Album Artwork: The cover art is striking and beautifully artistic, perfectly capturing the album’s emotional and introspective tone.
This was very well done. Catchy and interesting. My only gripe with this is that it all blended in together. I had hard time differentiating the songs, which gave me a little fatigue. I know Lorde is much more versatile than this album shows.
I’ve been meaning to listen to a Lorde album for a while so I’m glad this came up. Off the bat it reminds me quite a bit of Gracie Abrams music but I prefer this. It entertained me the whole time and I like her voice a lot. Finally just gotta say I could really hear the Jack Antonoff in this and take that, positively or negatively, as you will. Good pop stuff tho
"Lorde Lorde Lorde, ya ya ya" is about the sum of my experience with her up until now, so this is going to be a fascinating listen - does her reputedly dark and clever style grab me and hold on for a full album? ---- It's very cool. Great collision of sounds, with massive synths and sequences up against intimate, soulful vocals. The compositions are nice and non-linear, flowing between disparate moods and dynamics with awkward confidence. It's an album which feels like it constantly fights and overcomes its own insecurity - great emotional nuance to the breakup concept! Sounds like it was recorded in a cathedral. Favourite tracks: Green Light, Homemade Dynamite, Liability, Writer In the Dark, Supercut, Perfect Places
Really good album, occasionally a little too whiny but most songs are great
Cool exploration of young love, loss and grappling with the comedown nuanced production and smart lyrics make this one so much more than a Royals one-hit-wonder follow up. Beginnings of Jack Antinoff’s absolute stranglehold on pop production. Really works here, I like it!
8/10…art pop / sad girl /👂
Great listen. Upbeat and mood lifting for sure. Don’t know why I never listened to the whole thing.
Slower pop. Think love song music for a romance scene in a movie.
Melodrama is a sleek, emotionally sharp pop album that dives into heartbreak, loneliness, and self-discovery without ever feeling heavy-handed. The production is clean and bold, full of echoing synths, piano stabs, and shifting rhythms that give it a dramatic, almost theatrical feel—fitting for its title. Songs like Green Light, Liability, and Supercut show off Lorde’s talent for turning personal turmoil into grand, relatable moments. It’s a well-crafted album that manages to be both intimate and stadium-sized, but a few tracks don’t quite stick the landing and feel more like thoughtful sketches than fully realised songs. Still, it’s smart, stylish, and filled with interesting choices, proving Lorde wasn’t just a one-album wonder. Not quite a masterpiece, but definitely a bold and rewarding step forward.
Damn. Ik kende de cover wel, maar ik kende geen enkel nummer. Maar echt een top album! 4.1
kannte vor allem den namen der künstlerin, aber finde den sound mit den druckvollen bässen und den poppigen songs toll!
Not sure why this album isn’t talked about more. I liked it a lot
Enjoyed this one
Very much to my sister’s delight, I can say that New Zealand singer-songwriter *Lorde’s* second album *Melodrama* is a great modern pop record. Going into this I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, as I’m not the most familiar with Lorde’s music. However, this exceeded my expectations. Normally I’m not a big fan of pop albums like this, as more often than not they’re not my thing, but something about this album just felt right and captivated me. The pacing of this album is great, and it really felt like it flew by for being 42 minutes. With so many amazing tracks as well, this really made for quite the experience. This album is very well produced, and the choruses and hooks on this album are immaculate. I think good examples of this are *Green Light* and *Perfect Places*, both being excellent opening and closing tracks respectively. However, she isn’t afraid to get more sentimental when she wants to, with tracks like the piano ballad *Liability*, which is one of the best tracks on the album. Its emotionality is very well put together, and its lyricism can hit at points. Lorde’s songwriting and lyricism are great, and it really shines here. There’s a ton of highlights on this album I wish I could go over. However, I can’t as I have to make room for links. I still really recommend giving this album a listen, especially if you like pop music. There’s plenty of good to be found here, and I can see why my sister likes it a lot, haha.
Lovely album yeh, never listened to this one before. Mid 4.
Is it possible to describe Lorde as a millennial Tori Amos and have that understood as a compliment to both performers?
Me ha encantado, gran album
Fundamental
Yep, I love Lorde.
Effortless style
I’m here to confess I’ve a soft spot for Lorde. Epic pop goodness.
This is a great album, and Lorde is a beautiful singer. Her collaboration with Jack Antonoff perfectly suits her lyrics and unique voice. I'm not a massive pop fan, but I'll make an exception for Lorde. This is a beautifully produced album and I'm glad it's on this list.
Pretty good. Relaxing
Finally some solid millennial bops
This is a great album. It doesn't rise to a 5/5 simply due to a few weaker tracks. Also does this website know I'm going through a breakup and have a weakness to girly pop? First Adele and now this. I also had to listen to some Carly Rae Jepsen after of course. Also I really like the album art.
"Melodrama" by Lorde stands out as one of the best pop albums of the last decade, showcasing her ability to craft deeply personal and introspective narratives wrapped in lush, inventive production. Released in 2017, the album captures the emotional turbulence and introspection of young adulthood, all while maintaining a sharp pop sensibility. Lorde's songwriting shines throughout "Melodrama," with each track offering a unique blend of vulnerability and confidence. Songs like "Green Light" and "Supercut" highlight her knack for catchy melodies and poignant storytelling, while quieter tracks like "Liability" reveal her depth and emotional range. The production, helmed by Jack Antonoff, complements her vision perfectly, creating a rich and immersive sonic landscape. In essence, "Melodrama" is a beautifully crafted exploration of heartbreak, self-identity, and resilience. It's an album that resonates on multiple levels and demonstrates Lorde's evolution as an artist. Its impact and artistry make it a standout in modern pop music, showcasing the power of authentic storytelling in connecting deeply with audiences.
This is probably the hardest album to rate so far. I really do like some of the songs but others I don't like that much but feel like I "should" like them. Maybe I just need to give it more time and it will all come together. The songs that I currently relate to are in no particular order: - Louvre - Green Light (of course) - Sober - Writer In The Dark This is somewhere between 3 and 4 but with time, and I will listen to this album again, I think it will be more like a 4 than a 3.
Vielleicht das beste Pop Album
Not as groundbreaking as Pure Heroine, but still a fun 2010s indie pop record. Good production quality and an intimate vocal performance from Lorde
Honestly, just the artwork alone made me want to like this album and it turned out to be really good. I was in highschool when this record dropped, and hearing this style of music, which was very popular in that era, takes me back. This album feels very intimate thanks to the kind of raspy and quite voice of Lorde and the themes of love and grief of the lyrics. Another two traits to point our are how rich the production is, making the record sound really good; and the diversity on the instruments. For example, there's one song that uses trap beats and there are a couple of songs that are piano valads. Although all the positive points, there are some moments that I'm not crazy about, such as the second part of Hard Feelings/Loveless. Overall, it is still a great pop album.
This album is soo slay
LORDDE
pop gem, supercut is a masterpiece
I was expecting to be sick of this album due to listening to it 1683828 times in grade eleven. However instead I was finding deeper meaning in the lyrics than ever before. Is the homemade dynamite meth? Surely not, right?
As someone who doesn't like pop music too much, I do enjoy Lorde.
Meh
Quality record
Brilliant album, a real pop masterpiece
Bit bland
I love her style of song writing and her voice
Really solid pop album, had good Beata, good lyricism and overall a very replayable album
Another one I have a lot of nostalgia for but this is just a fantastic collection of pop songs!! I love it!
This really hit when released and has held up incredibly well. Sadly, I don't like any other Lorde albums
this album just straight up kicks ass ... undeniable
Lorde is one of my favorite artists, and of her first three albums, this is my least favorite. Her first and third albums seem so fresh, so unique. This one has got some excellent tracks, but seems pretty run of the mill pop. 4/5
Incredible sophomore album. Emotionally-charged vulnerability and quirky pop charm.
1st time listening to Lorde besides the song. “Royals”. This was very unique and interesting, I enjoyed it.
This is one of the best female pop vocal albums of the 2010s. I liked it just as much as back then
прохалявила и вместо мелодрамы слушала книги и релиз радар и коллег на работе. но мелодраму я хорошо помню, хороший альбом (больше нравится чем первый и третий)
Lorde’s music has always been the type where you want to listen on a late night drive, I’ve thought. I’ve never listened to this album but I think it fits in with the theme of the rest of her music. Very calm and vibey. She has a beautiful voice.
Glossier than Pure Heroine, more produced. Same framework. Still leaning on vibe. My favorite moments are the ones that are as spare as Pure Heroine's stripped-down yet haunting sonics.
Solid songwriting and unique sound. I think a lot of pop starts have been emulating this style for the last few years
This album is the deeper, more authentic, and relatable version of what Taylor Swift's recent work tries to do. I had to give this album several listens to ultimately decide on a rating, but on my third listen of "Liability" I realized how beautiful and thoughtful this album is. Lorde is clearly like a fine wine that is only improving since she burst onto the scene with "Royals"
liability and first track were catchy....don't know if this album put her on the map or not but would be happy w strong effort
This merits a 3, but as there are so few women in the list, I'm bumping her up to 4.
3 albums in a row with an incredible opener. Green Light is a sure-fire BOOM!! I love it! The energy remained through the rest of the album too. I’ve listened to this a few times in the past and it’s always a pleasure to come back to. I’m happy to score it a 4.
Listen this shit reminds me of college so my rating is biased and I don’t give a damn!!
This is a solid pop album, and the producer is clearly recognizable. Antonoff did a good job here. There is a good mixture of several catchy tunes, some slower, more sober (pun intended) ones, and some in between.
Melodrama was the backdrop to many a - you’ve guessed it - melodramatic late night drive in my teenage years. From the Louvre to Supercut, Melodrama played to my teenage angst, and grew with me as I experienced heartbreak for the first time. Do I think Melodrama is as strong of an album as Pure Heroine? No, but I love it all the same.
Sympa, mais pas particulièrement mémorable.J'ai quand même beaucoup apprécié mon écoute. 3,4 arrondi au dessus
One of the best pop albums I've ever laid my ears upon.
Good production and singing but the content is a bit bland.
not bad, not bad at all
Like this 7/10
Would give this one a Green Light.
This is a good album. There's some themes that touch depression and loneliness and it really hit for me today.
Solid album, I wonder if her other one is on the list
Sabrosl, buen pop, ligero y disfrutable.
Really good beats, but man every song is like one or two clever lines on repeat. Still, always have to respect a breakup album. Starts strong, stays strong
Really good and fun pop album, brilliantly produced. Want to listen to more like this.
Not usually my scene, but the album title is spot on! I can see why Lorde is popular with her fans
воспоминания
Good!
Crazy that this is 8 years old. Probably just as good as pure heroine, but the vibes just arent as immaculate for me.
Green Light - 5/5 Sober - 5/5 Homemade Dynamite - 4/5 The Louvre - 4/5 Liability - 4/5 Hard Feelings/Loveless - 3/5 Sober II (Melodrama) - 3/5 Writer In The Dark - 4/5 Supercut - 5/5 Liability (Reprise) - 3/5 Perfect Places - 4/5 Total score: 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ this was good, it's neck and neck with Pure Heroine i think. a more melodramatic vibe compared to that album (no pun intended)
That's the kind of pop I can listen to forever, just mindless soft-voiced could very well be tok audios poop. Lemme check, if the girl's attractive I'll rate it 4 Well, she has a few good photos
The album has its highs and lows, but there's something about Lorde's voice that is very engaging.
El álbum es perfecto, aunque no es mi tipo de música en cuanto a alusiones. Bailable en algunos casos, es buen pop.
Preet good, I liked it
lorde's most accomplished album to date, she was always a very good lyricist but melodrama accompanied it in a way that enhances all the details in lorde's songwriting it makes for a very emotional portrayal of breaking up and the chaos that comes before moving on
What's to say? It's Lorde... She only gets better with age. AND THIS album shows her maturity from Pure Heroine. A true artist, always growing. She has reached the top and will influence generations to come. A truly complete pop album with just the right fusion of other genres to keep the instrumentals fresh for new comers and the trained ear alike. Very Realized, intentional, and tastey. 4.5 - 5
Went into this only really knowing Lorde for "Royals" because ya know, that was her huge hit, right? And I haven't listened to the radio in earnest in over a decade, so anything I find is through personal recs and research. Thus, I never landed on Lorde after that point. Now that I'm here, I still greatly respect her artistry and it's cool to hear her grow even more comfortable as a compelling artist. This is a super solid collection of tracks detailing her personal journey through romance, relationships, and self-discovering and it is presented in earnest while maintaining her artistry. It is admittedly difficult for me to personally relate to much of the content within, but I recognize the talent she has for portraying her struggles in song and relating them to anyone who gives it a shot. Very consistent, expertly crafted pop music, and the title is right on the money.
8/10 Very much the “Alt-Pop” Bible, the best aspect of Melodrama by far is Lorde’s songwriting, not only do we obviously get some of the best Pop hits of the late 2010s from this record, we get some pretty evocative lyrics, she details extremely vivid scenes and emotions in each song, and while they do feel extremely specific in their situations, they feel universal to the sad girls who resonate with the emotions and tone of the record (shoutout women). While some of the production does feel like it’s a product of its time, we do get some pretty amazing and moody beats that remain fresh to this day, and of course her vocals and harmonies are phenomenal, sure it spawned hundreds of Lorde clones and forced many Pop artists to sing like her but that’s more of a mark against the industry. While I think a lot of Poptimism in modern Pop is overblown and astroturfed, Melodrama’s an album that deserves its love and influence over others. You like Lorde? Her early work was a little too “Alt” for my tastes, but when Pure Heroin came out in '13, I think she really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. She’s been compared to Lana Del Rey, but I think Lorde has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In '17, Lorde released Melodrama, her most accomplished album. I think her undisputed masterpiece is "Supercut", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the shortcomings of long-term relationships, it's also a personal statement about the Lorde herself! HEY ERIC! *swings shobon at eric* TRY DISRESPECTING WOMEN AGAIN YEW SCHTUPID BASTARD!!!
This is an incredible example of me going out of my comfort zone. I couldn't see myself listening to this without this generator but what an album man. What I originally assumed was just radio fodder turned out to be beautiful. AND AT 19?? This is EXACTLY what a 4 star album is for me. Something immaculate that probably won't be part of my rotation. Just wow.
I did listen to it a while ago and only liked Green Light! I can say now I've enjoyed it more, but Lorde is still an artist that's not really for me. I do have to say it feels very cohesive and the way the songs connect with its own thematic and storyline make it an interesting listen. Some hyperpop elements around there that I appreciate but honestly I don't really enjoy how she did it.
Et af de bedste pop albums fra 10erne
Really enjoyed this album. The layered vocals and the general production is so good!
Much more interesting than I expected.
Very much enjoyed. Will listen again. Even some precursor tunes that sounded like folklore. Raw lyrics.
Honestly, I'm glad they put modern pop albums in this generator. We don't need another Bruce Springsteen album, I'm sorry.
rly liked it
Really enjoyed this. Sober I & II, homemade dynamite. Hadn’t really listened to Lorde before but added this and look forward to listening again.
I got the chance to spin this album 3 times over the weekend. Once with headphones and a few times in a car during a long drive. I have to admit, I didnt think id like it after my first couple of tracks, but it was better with every play. Supercut was my favorite tune overall. Overall, the lyrics were deep, a fair amount of sonic diversity and genuinely unique for its time. Most importantly, I think Lorde paved a wide path for so many artists. I cant help but think Olivia Rodrigo is Lorde under a pseudonym
It seems very in vogue right now to hate on Antonoff productions, especially after we all spent the last few years getting bludgeoned by him and Taylor. Yes he has a pretty clear fingerprint on everything he does, and that can sound like a formula at times, but it works when the artist can find ways to leverage that mold rather than get trapped by it. Lorde and Lana Del Ray the former and Taylor sometimes the latter. I love pop rock with female vocals and a little dramatic flair, have a soft spot for Lorde and the rest of her contemporaries.
I get it now. A fan favourite, highly regarded by many and I now understand why Lorde was the biggest artist on the planet for a time. This is a great album! Lorde uniquely yet in such a relatable way communicates the ideas of a relationship coming to an end and all the emotions felt during. All the elements of sound used to compliment Lorde’s unique voice, melody and style is striking. Every song dances around your ears and keeps you wondering what’s coming next? Supercut is an underrated banger, should get more commercial play. “In my head I do everything right,” a line repeated at the conclusion of song that I felt like I had lived. To start the “in my head…” line is filled in with different emotions and memories that take you on her journey, then; maybe I’m the problem? Did I do everything right? Am I part to blame? Great. Lorde is raw, vulnerable and fun in this album. I haven’t listened to Pure Heroin, but I am Intrigued to hear how she was able to bridge the gap between a MASSIVE success to another. As a fellow Kiwi, proud of Lorde and this music. All her producers, writers and musicians should be too- really enjoyable listen and I will be back.
Bop
Favorite Track: Homemade Dynamite
Listened to this the first time after a major break-up and it hit hard. Always been a major album for me since. But this time, it just didn’t hit me the same way. Still good, but guess getting older means some things fade away.
Not an artist I have explored except Royals. I can hear some L D Ray and Kate Bush in this. Production is really good. Perhaps not enough hooks but it always keeps my attention.
Wow, this is an excellent album! I was not expecting to become a Lorde fan today, but it’s official. Top tier production, great lyrics and vocals, very creative from start to finish. This is a 4.5 with potential to be a 5.
Well well well. Ok I loved the first Lorde album. I remember thinking when this came out that it wasn’t as good. I was wrong. So much growth but Lorde keeps it catchy and textured. Liability hits me in the gut. Love Hard Feelings.
This is a good album. It has good lyrics, And its music is good, which makes a good song. It is a good album to listen to.
Are you looking for an album you can vibe to? "Melodrama" by Lorde is the album you are looking for. It has relatable lyrics, beats that get stuck in your head. "Green light" starts off slow but then it gets up beat and you can bob your head to the beat. very nice Vocals I'm actually surprised I like this album. I've heard about Lorde before but never really listened to their songs/albums. Nice album I highly recommend it.
have you ever heard a song like this I think the album perfect places was pretty good I liked the instruments and the singer why I like the instruments is because they make a sound I like and I cant describe it. and why I like the singer is because they have a pretty nice voice I think this album was good and I recommend listening to this album
1st song-ehh idk I rate it 2/10 2nd song- I rate like 7/10 3rd song- i rate like 8/10 and idk it singer so bad and idk
Do you like pop music? If so, this album is for you. I highly recommend it because I love all of the instruments in the background, the singer's voice, and the background. I love this album, and I hope you get to listen to this album.
What a beautiful and awesome album, I believe it will grow even more in me...
Great album. Standout songs: Sober Homemade Dynamite Liability
What is this list doing to me. First Beyonce then this. It actually... Pretty good. Yes it falls foul of the same afflictions which made me write off this entire genre that's popped up in the last 10 years, the ASMR-like soft low pitched drawl into the mic - see Billie Ellish, Charlie XCX, etc etc. But here the beats are actually pretty good, and lift it up. A couple of songs are skippable as they make me shudder since it sounds like she's 2cm away from my ear whispering at me. But most of it is actually a nice listen. What am I becoming..
Let’s go NZ this is one of the most justified white woman crashouts of all time. Pop artist should use this record as a reference, it’s that good across the board. And is that some Kate Bush influence I hear in Writer In The Dark?
Really good, modern pop music. Excellent.
mostly sparse, low-key pop music, very good
Not your typical* pop princess album! *i assume. I don't listen to anything like this usually.
I was surprised by how much I liked this album. It has a very modern synthpop and electropop feel, and Jack Antonoff’s production really enhances the layered synths and atmospheric soundscapes, giving extra weight to Lorde’s lyrics. The album is a concept piece set during a single house party, with themes of heartbreak, insecurities, and self-discovery. It captures a lot of the challenges and emotions people face in their late teens and early twenties, making it especially relatable for younger audiences, like high school and college-age listeners.
This is kinda like a better version of an average Taylor Swift album, as in it is pop music. Above average, but I thought the synthpop aspects of the record would be more prominent.
My favorite Lorde album. Great songwriting, production and performances. Green Light, Supercut and Perfect Places are highlights for me.
9/10. At first, I was like "Seriously? Another pop album?". However, after listening to it, I must say that my expectations have been exceeded, and I'm thoroughly impressed. The vocals are powerful. The production is great. The melodies are catchy, but not uninspired. Great album!!! :)
I remember this getting a lot of accolades when it came out but I never got around to listening to it. I wish I had checked it out. Before this all I knew was Royals, and I was a big fan of that song so I’m not sure why I didn’t explore her music further. I’m glad this album came up on this list because it is fantastic. Not a dud on here, just a really solid album that I will be returning to.
I've only ever really heard 'Royals' from Lorde and aside from being catchy I never heard anything else. This album was very pleasant and I can see myself returning to it at some point in the future to explore it more Standouts Green Light Sober II (Melodrama) 4/5
pre: not usually my genre but I'm excited about this The arrangement of the back half of Hard Feelings/Loveless (which is maybe just Loveless itself?) is kind of great, it reminds me of old Art of Noise. This is not representative of the whole album, but it was kind of fun to feel my ears perk up when it came on. Solid 4 for me. Won't be in heavy rotation but I will definitely choose to play this again.
NOT first listen Throwback to 2017, where I decided between Lorde's Melodrama or Lana Del Rey's Lust for Life in a music store. I chose the latter. No regrets, even if RYM will tell you it's her worst album -_- Nonetheless, I have returned to this album a few times, usually to get a quick shot of dopamine with "Green Light". Favourite track is "The Louvre", easily the most Bleachers of these Jack Antonoff-produced songs. I don’t have many strong feelings about Melodrama, but it is a great example of 2010’s pop. HL: "Green Light", "Homemade Dynamite", "The Louvre", "Hard Feelings/Loveless", "Writer in the Dark" November 16, 2024
Noch nie ein Album von ihr gehört. Hat mir sehr gut gefallen
Really solid album from Lorde. Very mellow but I think it works overall as modern pop
At first I thought the songs were all gonna sound the same but I ended up really liking the production on this
Next gen pop with competent lyrics and a style of its own.
I liked it
I love this album to begin with, so always happy for a reason to listen to it. It’s an emotional journey that breaks with Supercut - a song that lyrically/musically you can really feel yourself in. Perfect Places feels a bit out of place at the end after the rawness of Liability, but I really like that song so it’s fine. Sorry Lena Dunham
A great album that is basically the magnum opus of what Jack Antonoff can do. Truly not a bad song on the album and vibes that are nearly unmatched
r/popheads would be happy to finally see some representation. I slept on it a bit in real time but looking back it's a great modern pop album, showcasing Jack Antonoff's production at it's finest.
Really enjoyed this one
hell ya
Very soothing music. A lot of good songs that makes me just want to lean back, close my eyes and listen all day long. Love it!
talented
One of the best albums of the 20 teens. This record has a lot going on.
Excellent album
enjoyed this far more than I thought I would. nice 1 m8!
Lorde, Lorde, Lorde... This was better than expected.
Pretty good
Really good stuff. Unusual for music this new to actually have any originality and not be recycled pop designed to be forgotten in minutes
Lorde has a distinctive style and sound which I like. Having said that, thisnis the first full album of hers I have listened to. Good stuff!
This was decent, I had heard a few songs before but never really listened closely. Catchy melodies and lyrics were interesting at times. Favorite songs were: 1. Greenlight 2. Sober 5. Liability 8/10
Prior to this, my only exposure to Lorde was Rulers, and her secretly being Randy Marsh from South Park. I can now pleasantly report that I enjoyed this album. I have a gut reaction to dismiss modern pop, which definitely comes from a place of pretention and is a habit I'm working on breaking. I felt that instinct kick in on the first song, but told myself "Come on Kit, don't be like that now." With that the clouds parted, the sun shone through, and it was revealed to me that this is indeed a good album. It also took me back to when we did 1989, and I would like to demote that from 3 to 2 stars. Album cover: (B+)
I loved Pure Heroine and have listened to it many times. I've never explored her catalog past that, so I am happy to see this album! "Green Light" absolutely rips, very reminiscent of Pure Heroine. "Sober"was pretty good, but not as good as the opener. "Home Dynamite" also excellent. "Louvre" says "Broadcoast the boom boom and make them all dance to it" but doesn't have a lot of dance elements. It feels like a quieter reflection on making people dance to the boom boom. "Liability" is great. Strong lyrics. This album is really good. It's toned down from Pure Heroine but the lyrics are more open and raw. Green Light is my favorite song. 8/10
4.5
Not neccessarily music I'd seek out, but music like this can and does absolutely end up on my big playlist of Everything. Big plus: I quite love her voice. Buuuut... about two thirds in, I kinda grew a bit impatient with the sound and checked out Lorde's Pure Heroine for a comparison. And lo and behold, *that* one has two tracks that already are in aforementioned playlist. Bottom line, imho, not the album that should be in here, but also why not? Proper, contemporary pop music. Not a problem with it.
Listened Before? N Wow! A great surprise here. I loved this album. You can hear Jack Antonoff in the sound (very Taylor Swift-ish), but that's not a bad thing. Lyrics and music are all on point. Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: Green Light
For years I have been absorbing this album through the walls of my daughters bedrooms, and when it popped up I have to admit I wasn't entirely thrilled (I didn't think an album about teenage angst was an album for a 54 year old)... I'll admit I was partially wrong. There are some absolute gems on this album. And the Trip-pop musical style at times reminded me of some great tracks from the 90s. Melodrama is a genius title for this album BTW; the title is a droll wink that acknowledges she knows she's a bit OTT throughout the album. Four outstanding tracks: Green Light - pure anthemic bliss Liability - I have had this conversation with my daughter (also called Ella) and it was as heartbreaking as this song Supercut - a break up song that lyrically says "I have a few regrets" but musically says "it happened, but I have survived to dance another day" Perfect Places - a song about escaping that reminded me, that teenage life hasn't changed much since I was young and trying to figure life outs.
Surprisingly enjoyed this, will listen again
Such a classic. This takes me back so far. I’ve never actually listened to the whole album but I’ve heard a bunch of songs.
I didn't know I was a Lorde fan? I found myself tapping along from the beginning. Pleasantly surprised!
"They'll hang us in the Louvre / Down the back, but who cares—still the Louvre." Not my favorite style, but it's a really well-made pop album. Also I really like the album cover.
This was a strong personal pop album framed very well. Antonoff’s great production is clearly felt but his tropes do weaken the album at times. The last half is the strongest. It is a worthwhile album.
Positiivinen yllätys. Omalta levylautaseltani ei juurikaan löydy tämänkaltaista musiikkia. Arvoin kolmen ja neljän tähden väliltä, menköön neljä.
I liked this, it had an interesting emotional range and good variety in styles.
Really surprised by how much I liked this album. Found myself grooving to most of the songs. Definitely made me more of a fan than before.
pop goodness
a bit dramatic but quite enjoyable
Surprisingly liked this. Sounds like Billie Eilish
I hate to say it, but it turns out I don't mind pop
I didn't think I was going to like this....but by golly, I did.
I love Lorde and I think this is her best album by far. The production is stellar and the songwriting is fresh and interesting. My favorite tracks are The Louvre and Hard Feelings.
Instant appeal and thought provoking lyrics
Much better than I remember it being.
I like Lorde, I listen to her when I’m out running. But this is the first time I’ve listened to this album in full and not just a few songs. I enjoyed it, it has some great songs, but there are a few forgettable ones in the middle. She’s got a great voice, though!
I’ve loved Lorde since her very first album, and I found Melodrama to be an excellent follow-up. Even as someone who isn’t a huge fan of pop music, I can’t deny how fantastic her work is. This album is no exception—it’s another brilliant display of her unique take on pop.
What IS happening to me...!? I quite like this album, please don't tell my younger, angst-y, gen-x self.
It’s wasn’t surprising to find out that Jack Antonoff produced this album having noticed that some of these songs bare a resemblance to some of his Taylor Swift collabs. I like the electro pop sound. My only reluctance is the voice processing. It’s a bit much at times.
Absolutely great subdued pop music. Touching and thoughful
Green Light is a banger! I can guess why they picked this one for the list, but I like other albums of hers better. 3.5.
Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5
Lovely album. Started it thrice and couldn't continue, so heard the first song 3 times. Not sure if that's why I liked that the best, or because it was actually the best one. But in any case, it's now in my Playlist. So are 4 others. Very nice vibe, great music. Something different but not for the sake of it. Lord's voice is fantastic. Will listen to this whole album again tomorrow.
This was super good! I really liked the pacing of it and Lorde's voice is kind of obnoxious but it works. There are some great great tunes on here. Homemade Dynamite however is in contention for my least favorite song on an any album yet.
Not sure it lived all the way up to the hype but the highs are very high. Supercut and Green Light are just genius.
This album is a peculiar one for me. I feel like every track has something to like and something to criticise. Fairly or not, I always felt like this album was Lorde in a way selling out or at least playing up to standards and expectations of the music industry or the listening public at large. Yet on re-listen its quite hard to deny that its a great pop album, with almost no filler. I was not a fan of Green Light when I first heard it. It lacks some of the rhythmic elements that I enjoyed a lot on Pure Heroine. Starting the album with some piano chords and a couplet about putting on make-up and drinking in bars, it strikes me as cliché and naive, particularly in stark contrast to Pure Heroine where the teenage Lorde seemed wise beyond her years. But the racing euphoric second half redeems the track. Its a theme of the album for me that I'll find myself a bit irked by the lyrical content, but then won over by a beautiful chord progression, or low key banger of a chorus. Homemade Dynamite is my favourite track on the album - it retains what I liked most about Lorde's debut, it's catchy and danceable throughout, with a chorus that almost sounds like a Flume song. [side note - just went to double check that Flume didn't actually produce it and he didn't but he has a production credit on "The Louvre", interesting] The rest of the album follows the same sort of oscillations for me. I don't like the hook lyrics on Writer in the Dark, nor the concept of Supercut, but still find them to be well written songs. The only track I think is unnecessary is the Liability Reprise, which reads to me like Lorde deciding she likes the way the word "Liability" sounds when she sings it. So with the constant tug of war on this album I find myself siding more with the positives. I don't like some of the lyricism, but my only other real gripe is that the album doesn't sound enough like her debut album; that's just nitpicking isn't it. What's a few nits on a luscious head of hair? Fave Tracks: Homemade Dynamite, Perfect Places 4/5
Love the driving rhythms. Not as much a fan of the ballads. Sound feels a bit repetitive by the end of the album
i actually very much liked this.
Favs: The Louvre, Hard Feelings/Loveless, Perfect Places Least fav: Liability (Reprise)
Best leuk, 7
Seems I have heard Green Light on some previous occasion. I don't know how, haven't listened to the radio en years. Album was actually alright. Added this and the other 2 albums to favorites for furure listening.
Love Lorde’s voice and style.. this was a bit depressing album but was her intent so can’t really fault it much.
whoa a recentish album she made royals and i think thats pretty cool
Probably better than her debut Pure Heroine production-wise, and a more mature album, but I like it less. I think it is still a good album though. I like "Green Light" as a song but I wish it didn't start with the second line "We order different drinks at the same bars." Yes Lorde, that's how bars work.
Good stuff, big and melodramatic but with some nice intimate touches.
Не ожидал вообще этого, но вполне приятные удобоваримые поп песни.
Catchy pop album, full of raw emotion made entertaining. And then Liability comes along and stomps on you. Powerful song about heartbreak and low self-esteem. The rest of the album is fine but doesn’t really compare.
Atmosphärisch, schön.
A good album, I like Lorde's music.
I'd say its pretty average 2010s pop, but it does have a bit of an edge over other pop albums from that period. Lorde, even with quite simple indie pop, stands out because of her voice and quite meaningful lyrics (for a pop album). Also, some songs did have enough varied elements to not sound too repetitive. I think it deserves a 4 for effort and the fact I found myself enjoying it for the most part.
Really enjoyed this. Maybe no huge hits, but consistent throughout.
Rather enjoyed this album. It was pleasant.
My main issue with this album is putting ‘Green Light’ as the first track. How do you follow that?! I’ve listened to the album before but it never stuck, and I realize now that that’s why — nothing much stands out after the first song. I’m glad I got this album under these circumstances (this list) because I had to actually a little harder this time, and I’m glad I did. It’s a great album! My future self may wish I’d given it a 5 but it just feels a little soon. Four-and-a-half stars!
Mature, powerful music. An artist tuned into the planet and all its angst.
While Jack Antonoff's production is increasingly ubiquitous given his work with T. Swift and Lana del Rey, Melodrama still feels fresh and energetic compared to some of his latest output - the horn flourish on 'Sober' is 10x better than most of Tortured Poets Department. And Lorde is wonderfully Lorde, her sullen delivery giving the impression she's singing these songs against her will. If the lyrics lean too much towards navel gazing self-loathing at times, even the songs that drag are listen-able - and there are enough bangers to raise this far above mediocrity.
Bar a few overly saccharine overproduced moments, this really is all people (the hyping kind) say it is as far as sophisticated commercial pop can be.
It's just a really great pop album. Lorde is the champ. 83/100
This was exciting to see on here - I'd heard good things for years. All in all it's a pretty strong album. Green Light, Homemade Dynamite, Liability, and Sober 2 through the end of the album are amazing. Sober, the louvre and hard feelings aren't all that great. Not perfect, but great listening experience. 4/5
Solid pop songs, but nothing worth rushing back to.
Great album, there’s some tunes that are not fully fleshed out but it has a wonderfully consistent/moody aesthetic and Green Light is one of my personal favorite pop songs!
So wonderfully captures that carefree neo-boho moment of the mid teens, but low energy pop has never been my jam.
Great sounds.
4-
First impressions are good. Although it does suffer from a few jack antonoff-isms. Most songs are fantastic and a few are quite middle of the road. Good listen. Praise the lorde
Great production quality, great vocals, good instrumentation. At the end of the day, this is pop music, but it's good pop music. Enjoyable to listen to. Four stars.
Surprisingly enjoyable for a pop album.
Dark, sad, raw, lovely.
Feel like I'm falling into the trap of "it's new so I rate it higher", but its an easy trap to fall into when the production values on these newer albums is so much better, obviously because they've been able to stand on the shoulders of what has come before. And I think that most of all is what is to be celebrated here, that a young artist is able to capture and communicate their experience so effectively because of the build up to this point in both music production and music distribution. I don't know if I'd come back to this that much, there is still the issue of taste, which is often what keeps 4s at the bay of 5s.
Git
quien sufrió más jesus o lorde
Shit this is part of my dads old snowboarding playliist Like, repetitive but still deffinetly a vibe I do like her voice so so much Fun sounds
Liability, Writer in the Dark, and Supercut are definitely the standouts but the rest of the album forms a great setting to experience them. Great breakup album.
Not my type of thing but enjoyed it, catchy and a good voice.
I have a lot of criticisms over the modern albums on the list. However, this one really does belong. I don't listen to her a ton, but Lorde is such an incredibly talented artist. Great album!
It's Lorde! But It's not my fav Lorde
Wow just wow. Have mever been a fan until today. Thos is a beautiful album great composing amd writing all songs are chronological and have to do with the story she is telling. This is what an album should be, didnt realized they still made these. Incredible how I dont feel any song is outstanding on its own but as an album it is a masterpiece. Easy to listen to Didnt know or had heard one single song so glad I got to listen to it. Will put in my heavy rotation. Her voice sounds great. Only critique is that the pace is too slow for my taste but thats a personal. Its like a story line.
Perfect Places
In my hyper pop-girlie era, what can I say?
Hell yes. Excellent summer pop album. Super Cut and Greenlight are particularly good.
I actually really enjoyed this
Could see myself listening to this more often. Lots of interesting beats and songs on here.
Green Light Liability Supercut Perfect Places
Representative of the 2010s sound of minimalist girl pop
Bangs actually.
I really loved The Louvre and Liability. I think the more I listen to this, the more I would like it. I definitely has potential for me to really like it, so I’m giving it a low 4.
7/10
Why doesn't this feel as exciting as it should. I think because this sounds had become so ubiquitous in pop, pushing this to background music. Some good tracks though
4.1/5 listened 2x and went back and listened to "Pure Heroine"
A masterclass in writing modern pop music
Good chill songs
I have heard of Lorde but was not familiar with any of her music (I did listen to Royals after this album). I enjoyed this quite a bit. Her voice is great, and the songs are interesting. The varied feel of the different tracks keeps it fresh and interesting. I can definitely see myself listening to this again.
This is the epitome of what I would call "night music." The production was atmospheric, moody, but catchy. Lorde's voice is iconic for a reason, and her singing is great here. I'd give it a 4.5 if I could, but as it doesn't quite reach the threshold for 5 I'll round down.
I've listened to this many times previously, and saw Lorde live when she was touring this album. All around great album, I'm particularly fond of the production. I find some of the lyrics to be kinda edgy and cringey.
Really enjoyed this album.
I like Lorde. This isn't an album I'll put on frequently, but definitely fills a craving for when I need it. I like how she's grown from Royals and Tennis Court and evolved her songwriting and sound.
Enjoyed this one.
I was struggling to listen to this until the song Liability. I enjoyed the album from that track on. Definitely not my usual jam but I enjoyed it. I've heard her name but never listened to her. Pretty solid for a pop album.
Just really really really good. but not as good as Pure Heroine. She's got a very distinctive style that's backed up by some terrific melodies. Very refreshing.
Lorde phase incoming….
When this album came out, it was a timely examination of the emptiness of party culture and a generation trying to find meaning anywhere they could. Lorde’s critique of a scene she was clearly involved in shows the frustration of trying to squeeze water out of a stone and then going back for more. She was only 19 when she wrote this album so the definitiveness of her words on heartbreak should be taken with a grain of salt. However, I think she expresses truth here quite well. The middle to late section of the album drags a bit and features the weakest songwriting. Unfortunately, Jack Antonoff’s production style has become so ubiquitous that this album already sounds dated.
Really enjoyed
Pop album with substance, enjoyable listen
The absolute queen of whispery drama pop. This is definitely a pop album, but there was some depth that surprised me. Liability is vulnerable and endearing and was a highlight. Plus Green Light is a certified banger.
Muy linda voz y composiciones, redondeo para arriba
Has flavors of generic mid-2010s era radio pop, but the lyrics elevate it to a 4 in my book.
Liability is an excellent song. Lorde is reliable quality.
4.5, I think tried listening once before because I looove Supercut.
Pretty good
Really good & reminiscent of Kate Bush at times. This is quality pop.
Really quite good. In its genre, much better than a lot of its rivals
It's not my thing, but it's pretty good at what it's trying to be.
So happy weird ass music like this can be popular. If I was 15 years younger this would be right up my alley.
This albums gives off strong early 20s vibes. That coming-of-age era in which you feel both like an adult and a teenager in an adult suit. Lorde sings passionately about lost love, partying, the invincibility of youth, and self doubt in a way that feels larger than life while also feeling intimate. The music is crafted with precision and polish (perhaps too much polish for my taste), and the lyrics are catchy and impactful (for the most part). Green Light is the standout track - if every song was as brilliant, it would be an easy 5 stars.
Great album and will listen again
Lorde's sophomore effort didn't reach the heights of Pure Heroine for me but I have a lot of love for this album since it came out while I was living abroad, listening to more music than I ever have before or since. Whenever I hear Green Light I am instantly transported back to an Uber in Bordeaux.
Digging into to Lorde's "Melodrama" was an intriguing detour for me, given my typical lean towards genres outside of mainstream pop. However, there's no ignoring the album's compelling quality—it's exceptionally catchy, with hooks and melodies that linger long after the music stops. While I might not find myself spiralling into the depths of obsession that I reserve my musical heroes, "Melodrama" has secured a spot in my library. Among the tracks, a few stand out as personal anthems I've happily looped on repeat. "Sober," "The Louvre," and "Perfect Places" emerge as the crowning jewels of the album for me. That's not to say the album is without its skips—"Writer In The Dark," for instance, grates on my nerves in a way that reminds me that no artist, not even my favourites, is capable of producing an album where I adore every single track. And that's perfectly fine. It's this mix of hits and misses that personalizes the listening experience, reminding me of the subjective nature of music appreciation. Favourite Tracks: Sober, The Louvre, Perfect Places
Nice voice.
Loved it. Enjoyed the sound front to end.
it was good!!
good pop album 4/5
Veel goede nummers die ik vooral van de radio ken, maar niet van wist dat het van Lorde was. Verder gewoon een uitstekend 10s pop album.
Very good
Yeah, you know what? This is a pretty good album. But I'm not listening to it again for this project, because it has unfortunate personal connotations.
Not bad, wouldn’t be a personal choice but wouldn’t turn it off if it’s on where I’m at.
Is ok, good background listening, catchy songs
On paper I shouldn't like Lorde and yet I find the brand of pop she's concocted on Melodrama to be a compelling listen. It's not going into heavy rotation but I will play it again and be happy to hear any of the songs when they come on.
Too pop musicy for my tastes, but was enjoyable nonetheless
