Reviews (page 4 of 13)
Great voice and fresh sound
A good modern album on the list! Nice to bump up the 2010s average
They should hang this in the Louvre Down the back, but who cares - Still the Louvre
Louvre is an incredible number. Just crackles. Liability is such a naked song. "You're a little much for me" Lorde is a lotta much for the world. Hard Feelings/Loveless. So well produced. Like the rest of the album. Which is what I think makes me pull back some. It's because I'm old. I remind myself that "Dark Side of the Moon:" was also super produced, as was all of Steely Dan. I hear her sing "Bet you wanna rip my heart out", then I let this girl's talent wash over me. She's the real deal. Sober II (Melodrama). The centerpiece of the album. The afterparty, the afterglow, the dirty sheets, the toxic cleanup. And what I sense is the loneliness of this generation. The album cover is gorgeous. A post-modernist take on the post-coital moment. She's looking at us as we hold out shoes in our hands and tip-toe out the door... Her looks says it all: "Leaving so soon, bitch?" Writer in the Dark. What a complex track. The layering of voices, tones, meanings. The vocal is louder than on other songs, saying listen. You don't want to miss this. "I love you till my breathing stops, I love you till you call the cops on me." Desperation like I've never heard it before, raw emotion given a cold gloss. Best track on the LP. Perfect Place is too oriented for radioplay. I wasn't enamored. But overall a fine album. I think she's a serious artist.
going by how many times I've put it on again, this actually wants a 4. Splendidly crafted pop with an earnest and restless heart.
Not sure if I like this or Pure Heroine more. Regardless, it’s a very good record.
Talented singer and deep lyrics, but does nothing for me.
Green Light
I really liked the vives
Amazing. Best song: Supercut
Creative and very personal set of songs. Liability in particular, is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in a while. Great album cover too. Faves: Green Light, Hard Feelings/Loveless, Liability
Pleasant and easy to listen to. Pop but alternative enogh to please me.
Do I like her voice? Yes...no..yes...no....yes?? There were actually only two songs on this album that I didn't like. The music was great. Really liked the song Supercut.
Good groove, and lyrics. I quite liked Liability. But overall it didn't blow me away. I'd listen again, because of the groove, and the style. But it's not the best example of this style, to me.
Not heard of Lorde before. Great first listen. Loved the album. Easy to listen to and a great many pop hooks in her songs.
Favorite Song: Green Light
8/10
seeing this was today's album was like winning the lottery very solid release from lorde although i still prefer her debut project notable: green light, supercut 4/5
the alt pop bible but not the best there is i fear highlights: liability, hard feelings/loveless, supercut 3.75/5
Lorde's voice is incredible. Only knew her from Royals but man she vibes.
3.5/5
Im pleasantly surprised. This album is so ahead of its time. Loved it
Pretty good, I really like Lorde's voice. Stands out against most pop artists.
Started strong with green light and kept it fairly well
I really liked her first album but apparently not enough to listen to anything else she's put out. This was very good!
I liked this, but there were no standout songs for me that would bring me back, so I really struggled on what to rate it. I flipped a coin on whether it would be a 3 or a 4, and it got lucky: 4.
It was surprising good! I’ve never really liked any of the lords songs I’ve heard before. But there was something sort of nostalgic about this album
“They say, ‘You're a little much for me You're a liability You're a little much for me’ So they pull back, make other plans I understand, I'm a liability” High quality (semi) contemporary Art Pop that cements Lorde as one of the deeper and more talented artists within the genre that my girlfriend and I affectionately refer to as “Girly-pop”. Lorde was doubtless key in laying the foundations of the female dominated pop landscape that exists today and it is interesting listening to this nearly ten years after its release. Sensitive and personal songs speaking on the female experience find increasing commercial success and resonate with fans in a very meaningful way. Lorde is clearly extremely good at delivering exactly these kinds of tracks and this “Melodrama” is a great example of this.
I like the album, the best things about it are the singers voice and the vibes of the songs Favs songs - Green Light, Hard Feelings/Loveless, Supercut 4/5
Yummy
I have a hard time liking Lorde's vocal style, but it's definitely a me problem — this album is excellent. Gotta listen to more Kiwi musicians I suppose. So much great production and writing.
Some bangers indeed.
fuck yeah.
This is probably my favorite Lorde album from a sonic stance; I think her voice works best with synths and a more electronic sound. I wouldn’t call it her best lyrical work, but it’s not terrible. My favorite is Hard Feelings/Loveless.
Atmospheric, soft, sad and when it needs to be, incredibly vibrant. I've never been big on Lorde outside of a handful of tracks but I understand why this one gets a lot of praise. For some reason it makes me wonder if Olivia Rodrigo is going to make it into the next revision of the book.
Really good album, a nice discovery.
Excellent album. Great feel. Excellent production. Pop + feeling. Well worth several replays.
Favorite Tracks: Green Light / Homemade Dynamite / Liability / Supercut Rating: 3.7 Sounds fantastic in Lossless through a good pair of headphones! That Antonoff production value all over this thing; generally just very tight, dynamic, and interesting touches like some kind of melotron flute on Dynamite or the super distorted piano on Supercut. Loses some steam in the middle for me, and the whole depressed-at-an-EDM-show-but-make-it-pop thing isn't really my vibe, but Lorde's voice is really interesting and works well for this. I preferred Pure Heroin overall but even as a 40 something white dude this is a pretty cool album.
Haha, before listening to this, I was only really familiar with one Lorde song, and it wasn't on this album. The album was good though!
Day 12 — Lorde — Melodrama (2017) Listened: Mar 7, 2026 Genre: Indie Pop / Art Pop / Electropop Vibe: Heartbreak driven and emotionally raw, empowering, melancholic theatrical pop Highlights: • Green Light • Sober • The Louvre • Hard Feelings/Loveless • Writer in the Dark • Supercut • Perfect Places Impression: Great album from top to bottom. This is my type of pop. Great energy and lyrics. Rating: 3.5/5 Keep songs? Yes Revisit album? Yes
This was a very well done album. I enjoyed it quite a bit, more than I thought I would.
Easy to enjoy, familiar tracks
:)
don’t love her style of singing, but besides that this album is so much fun, well written and produced.
I've liked Green Light for a while but I never got around to listening to this album until now. I don't mind Jack Antinoff, but I'm usually not a fan of his work with Taylor Swift and some iof these tracks dip into that sound unfortunately. There are still a lot of fun tracks, and I think it's a well constructed album.
- Green light is so fun and will always remind me of 10th grade homecoming. - Sober suffers from the most 2017 percussion - Broadcast the boom boom boom and make them all dance to it -crazy how many small parts of this album i recognize but didn't know it was lorde before - in your car the radio up :0 Favs - Green Light, The Louvre, Writer in the dark, Supercut
Listened at Albian, great album
Nice, I understand why it is on the list, its pretty good
this was really good, very emotions and some bangers
Album
Thought I'd hate it but I had a fun time.
Breaking up with your boyfriend in a Lowe’s parking lot core.
Favorite tracks: Greenlight, Hard Feelings/Loveless, Supercut Pure charisma in a perfectly produced pop record.
If I'm being brutally honest, I would not have given this album a passing glance if I was twenty years younger. As it stands its not an album I would listen to in full regularly but there are plenty of standout tracks that peaked my interest. Standout Tracks Homemade Dynamite Liability Green Light Supercut
Great songwriting. Not my genre; sounds a lot like Adele when I was hoping for more of an alternative, Kate Bush feel. 3.5
I AM GEN Z!!!!
a modern one! fun! i had never fully listened to this album and i have historically not been a lorde fan. listening to this all the way through was delightful, i may have to give her other albums another chance <3
Super
Great fare from a beautiful singer. She has her own style and really shines well in this album. She has a great, understated voice that is really enjoyable to listen to.
> the Beatles Never listened to a full Lorde album. This was great.
What makes a pop record good to me? When it doesn’t sound like a pop record, and this is a perfect example.
I love the production on this album: dark, dense, pulsing with moody, almost menacing energy. And Lorde's rasp is the perfect voice to deliver it. An album to listen to when you're depressed but still the coolest bitch in the room. The lyrics don't all land for me, but this is definitely going into my regular rotation. Favorite tracks: I really need to listen more to determine because I like it all but on a first listen - Green Light, The Louvre, Hard Feelings/Loveless, Melodrama (Sober II), Perfect Places.
Emotional indie album with the right blend of heart-felt slower songs and some louder bangers with some force behind it. Love her voice! Green light is a banger. Supercut and the louvre are great too.
I am absolutely shocked at how much i enjoyed Melodrama. I've never been the biggest fan of Lorde because all i really knew her for was Royals and not much else. So i was shocked to see that this is some of the best contemporary pop i have heard in quite some time. It was insane to see just how textured, deep and melodic all these songs were. I also think that Lorde's vocals were definitely a highlight and some of the best she has sang. The lyrics are also really good here too with them always sounding deep but never overly melodramatic (get it?). Some of the songs toward the end did get a bit forgettable due to not much happening in them but overall, this is a really good album. Best Song: Sober Worst Song: Writer In The Dark
Really enjoy Lorde's music. Liability and Supercut were already in rotation from this album so it was an enjoyable listen to visit the rest of the tracks here.
can you believe this is my first time listening to this
I am on a worrying run of positivity with our recent albums. I think I listened to this years ago when it was much lauded by critics and it did nothing for me… but I really enjoyed this time. There are obvious Swift comparisons but I found the songs were melodically stronger and topically more interesting than most of Swift’s efforts. As pop albums go, it is up there…
Probably the best from Lorde
I’m biased so I know I’ll be rating this high. Such nostalgic songs for me here :) green light, perfect places
Lana Del Rey dreams of writing songs this good. So do I.
Idk, I like this and there are some crackers on it but there is something lacking and it fails to grab me. It’s a bit lacklustre at times somehow. I imagine it’s a grower though. 3.5
Liked this better than when it first came out. Still can’t get over how affected and inauthentic her voice sounds.
I got taken back to like 2015-2018 time of my life when I used to listen to very similar electronic chill music while gaming and I quite enjoyed this album in that sense. Low 4, since I think my 3's so far have been worse, but "nostalgia" carried this.
Pretty good. I was surprised!
Loved it surprisingly? Wendy has a pt. 4b despite it sounding soooo 2017
Saved? ✅ Would listen again? ✅ Would recommend to anyone? ✅ Would buy on Vinyl? ✅
People always said Lourde was good but never really listened to her stuff. But yeah, she’s pretty good
This came out when I was in college and it had my corner of twitter and tumblr in an absolute chokehold. Really good and super nostalgic for me.
Not exactly my taste, but not bad actually.
7/10
Very good.
Random thoughts: * I think this album is aging really well. I might like it even more than when it came out. * Rarely does the sophomore effort live up to the hype but this one easily does and might even surpass the debut album. * I'm not of Lorde's generation but it feels like she has really tapped into what it is like for people in her generation. I think I'd be okay having Lorde represent for my generation. * This is a much better choice from the 2000s. I think we will look back on this one as a classic and should definitely be included in a list like 1001.
lorde my bbyyyy
Love Lorde although my favorite from her is Pite Heroine I still enjoy this album although I haven’t heard it in awhile
One of my favorite pop artists from the last 20 years, and this is her peak (so far). Her music is cathartic and messy. Her lyrics are best in genre ("They'll hang us in the Louvre / down the back, but who cares? Still the Louvre"). Gets deeper and better on each listen. A modern masterpiece.
Lorde rocks
Very sentimental to the time in which it came out. This album, Lordes vocals, -- are a blueprint to the indie/synth pop that is still being released today. Surreal lyricism and valuable production choices throughout, this album will never not stir some level of adolescent heartbreak within me.
It's great(now I feel like that one music review TikToker who glazes Lorde)
Very sleek production but has enough punch to keep me interested. Very good of it's kind
Enjoyed. Never listened to this one before today
I looked and for some fucked reason there's no Pure Heroine on this list which I think is far and away the superior Lorde album.
Very good pop music. If I’m being picky, some of the lyrics feel a bit cliché and I imagine the production will feel a little dated in the coming years but you absolutely can’t argue with the quality of the songwriting and the vocals. I enjoyed this far more than I expected. Best: Green Light (Writer in the Dark also excellent on many levels) Worst: no bad songs
good solid album with some great songs
A great set of songs
after a dose of depressing 90’s albums i was wondering if i should just drop the project. but seriously, “Melodrama” is one of the best (newest) pop albums ever. anyone who says its soulless is either: a. a man b. a boomer c. all of the above favs: Liability, Homemade Dynamite, Perfect Places
good pop music (rare)
I’m beginning this project while also beginning the project of trying to be a Buddhist. A lot of that requires letting go of assumptions and just being in the moment. So I tried to let go of whatever feelings I have about Lorde, her debut album, and the choice of this one for the book over that. What I heard was a smart pop artist in the vein of those I love now (St. Vincent, Caroline Polachek) and those from the past (Kate Bush). There’s danceable stuff, dark stuff, a great mix. And she doesn’t particularly sound like someone trying to be anything but herself, which is all I want for her after her early stardom. Guess I let that slip in there, but I hope that’s what I’d want for anyone.
Girly but good. Not a bad song on to be honest.
Easily Lorde’s best work. Very cohesive pop record which doesn’t over stay its welcome.
OF COURSE BABYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Lorde’s best album. A bit soft in the middle but a thrilling start and emotional finish.
Lotta melodrama. Brings me back to roadtrips in the PNW for baseball. More nostalgia than actually enjoying the lyrics but overall enjoyable.
I've already listened to this album quite a bit. Lorde's best work so far. I enjoy all the tracks, with Homemade Dynamite and Perfect Places being my favorite songs. 4.25/5.
green light, supercut, liability, perfect places, and the louvre are such standouts. other songs are certainly weaker. probably a 4 star for me?
A classic angsty album with some timeless hits. Favourite tracks: Hard Feelings/Loveless Supercut
7/10 Very cool, but left me asking why she sings like that.
Solid breakup album. Though, she does not seem to have dealt with it well…at all. Some of the tracks sucked me in more than others. Either way, I’m sure this would have been in heavy rotation had I known about it during a previous breakup.
Best song is homemade dynamite
I am familiar with "Green Light" (such a bop) but my first time listening to the whole album. What a talent she is. I really enjoyed this record. Favorites: Green Light, Sober, Liability, Supercut Would I listen to it again: Yes
i listened to this when it came out, and was disappointed off the high of pure heroine. revisiting it, i was much more appreciative of the intentionality of the additional production compared to her first album. the lyrics were hitting this time — maybe i’ve matured. pretty sure i forgave myself for feeling a way about all of my past boyfriends.
fave songs: homemade dynamite, louve, green light, perfect places
Pretty voice. Pretty melodies. Pretty neat lyrics. I feel pretty hearing this album & I like that too.
Already had 4 of the songs on this album in my library and enjoyed listening to the remainder of the album. Solid. Added a couple of additional songs to playlists. Great beats, catchy lyrics. (4)
*Melodrama* Quite honestly I just think this sounds like a Jack Antonoff album . Not that that's a bad thing but whether he's working with Taylor, Lana, or in this case Lord there's a certain sound that is pretty much pervasive through all of it. But there are some really good highlights to this album the opener "Green Light" probably is good as a 2010s pop song can get. The closer "Perfect Places" is quite good as well. But I think the highlights is when she gets a little bit more stark. "Liability" and "Writer In The Dark" really stand out for me they really come off very emotionally bare. I love the Kate Bushisms of "Writer" which she pulls off on pure authenticity. They even left as we get to most of the rest of the album I liked but I just didn't really get 100% moved by it because I kept hearing Antonoff jacking all over the place. But I think the highlights of this album keep it in a mild four level (8.33) ★★★★ Quite honestly I think *Pure Heroine* was a better album. I think it was a unique little debut and should have been the one in the book
Very enjoyable and cool pop album. 4 stars
I thought this album was a pretty good pop album and a pleasant surprise. It most reminds me of Taylor Swift's 1989, which came out a couple years prior. Not everything works for me, but I do think there's some good songs here, including "Green Light", "The Louve", "Liability", and "Writer in the Dark". 4 stars.
I'm not a huge fan of the signature Antaonoff sounds, but it is always incredibly well produced. Lorde brings an edge that balances the glistening synths. The art-pop tracks worked more for me than the pop-pop tracks, outside of Green Light which is my favorite song on the album. There was a lot more to chew on with this record than I expected!
Surprisingly I enjoyed this album a lot, great range between upbeat dancey songs and slower introspective songs. The production on the album is very good, lots of very enjoyable beats. Not perfect but damn close
bop
Better than I expected not my cup of tea but decent- i definitely could re listen to this
This is a really close one. I’m gonna give it a high 4, low 5 (but 4 stars)
The same standard breakup makeup love songs, but with a self awareness to it acknowledging how cliche it all is. I mean, it’s called melodrama, people! Were you never 19? Wrap it in some of Jack Antonoff’s best production (that’s saying something) and you’ve got a winner. I love Charli XCX
I am not a fan of Lorde at all. In fact I do not like her other 3 albums at all, but this came to me at a time where I was about to make a big change in my life, and in her breakup album I found inspiration of the big change in my life. it is a fantastic pop album .Pop songs are my guilty pleasure and this is full of synth and drum. Hard Feelings/Loveless was always my favourite on the album, but it is accompanied by a lot of notable songs. I am not out to own it, but I have it digitally and I am ok with that. 4 stars
greenlight - 9/10 - ok loved this sober - 7/10 - love the prechorus, the rest is not my fav homemade dynamite - 5.5/10 - didn’t love this the louvre - 7/10 - the verses are perfect but i don’t love the “broadcast the boom, boom, boom” part liability - 10/10 - absolute perfection hard feelings/loveless - 8.5/10 - love the hard feelings part but less so the loveless half, the hard feelings section is much longer tho so i lean more towards enjoying this track sober II - 6/10 - meh writer in the dark - 8/10 - so good supercut - 10/10 - PERFECT I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH OMG (knew this previously) liability (reprise) - 9/10 - not as good as liability but still good perfect places - 9.5/10 - amazing overall rating for the album is like an 8/10, some tracks i really loved and some weren’t for me
Is melodramatic indeed. I enjoyed this and will revisit
Dramatic and not my taste but not bad 😁
Not as good as I remember but I'll still give it a 4. Favorite track: Writer In The Dark 3.5/5
Love
Her best album
While Lorde might not be my favorite Pop Queen (that honor belongs to Carly Rae Jepsen), it's hard to deny that her first two albums are damn good. Melodrama is an album that stands today as one of the masterpieces of modern Alt-Pop. While it didn't receive nearly as much widespread appeal as Pure Heroine, it offers a much deeper insight into Lorde as both an artist and a human being. Melodrama is a very personal and introspective album that showcases just how expressive Pop music can be when talented artists are allowed to write about more than shallow love. It helps a lot that Melodrama also boasts arguably the best Alt-Pop production of all time consistently throughout its runtime. Green Light is the perfect start showing just what this album is capable of right out of the gate. It carries that momentum until around the Loveless section of Hard Feelings, but picks it back up quickly with Supercut to finish just as strong as it starts. Melodrama was fundamental in developing my enjoyment of modern Pop music, which I had largely written off for a while. I believe it has helped me appreciate so many other modern Pop artists that I likely would've completely rejected 5 years ago. Whenever I hear somebody say that popular music sucks, Melodrama is usually the album I point them to. Along with Pure Heroine, Melodrama defines a period of mid 2010s nostalgia that has become very personally important to me. It's an album that's able to capture a deep emotional struggle without sacrificing anything in the way of fun and beautiful Pop production. Melodrama remains Lorde's masterpiece and represents the absolute best of modern Pop music.
Good tunes but too melancholic for me.
Green Light is such a banger. Rest of the album holds up well enough.
Finely crafted pop tunes with a delicate touch. Beautiful vocals. A bit juvenile but understandably so. Probably more impressive at the mature aspects given the artists age.
automatic 4 for Supercut
A very pleasant surprise! Really good album.
Emotive heartbreak Green light Writer in the dark Supercut
Peak Album, Pop but in a good way, my 14 year old self would’ve ate that up
So much fun... equal parts poppy and moody, classic "sad pop music" lyrics, bangers and ballads. This is a super solid album from a more recent artist who has really shown that she can write fantastic music. I love seeing this sort of thing on the list. It's a nice change of pace from a lot of the older stuff. I know that stuff is there because of the influence it's had, but it's nice to see some albums that are still relatively new - ones that I hope have that kind of influence in the future.
LUVVV THIS ALBUM CLASSIC CLASSIC CLASSIC fav tracks ALL OF THEMMM
Interesting musically but the lyrics were not relatable
I’d heard this album was supposed to be good. I enjoyed it, I liked how it was bookended by the most popular songs. Some parts reminded me of more recent Taylor Swift songs, which could be because Jack Antonoff was producing.
There’s a few songs on here I def had on repeat at some point but the other ones were kinda meh but vibes wise it’s so very teenage girl in like the best way possible.
It is a good pop album
So unique and different. I love her very odd voice.
Already knew this one, I love it.
I mean the girl was 19!! cam'on
9. amazing nostalgic personal creative enjoyable
I only knew Lorde from Royals so this one was all new to me. I liked it basically with it's spacey electronic backgrounds. I hear some Kate Bush, some Taylor Swift in there. Not bad at all.
nostalgicznie, troche przypomina lekko fioletowy zachod slonca z wiezowca.pop queen, ciezkie teksty ale bujaja
Quite good.
This is fabulous. I need to listen to her library. 4 *
I'm probably in the wrong generation for this album, but gotta say I liked it quite a bit.
Green light rocks. It gets a little too slam poetry feeling for me but way better than a lot of stuff on this list.
I bumped this hard when it first came out. Still her best album imo.
I really like this album and some songs are absolute bangers, but I'm not sure it will keep its charme in years to come, it feels very specific to a certain time, and to the feelings of a very young person
Beautiful and more intense than other contemporary pop divas. I will listen again.
This album is a solid 4 maybe 4.25, but not a 5 star for me. I like it, solid pop album. Jack A knows what he’s doing. I’m surprised to see it was on Rolling Stone’s list of 500 greatest albums ever. I didn’t think it was *that* great. Perhaps it has to grow on me with listening a few more times. Either way; solid, good bops!
I have heard of Lorde but never actively listened to her songs. This was amazing, loved the electropop and how they fully blended in with her ballads. Want to hear more of her now.
Not generally a genre I listen to, but I was pleasantly surprised by this album. Great from top to bottom. Really enjoyed Liability and Perfect Places.
Ya ya ya! Feeling good on a Wednesday...er...Friday. Love the brass on Sober. Good vocals and some fun tracks. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): Green Light, Liability, Supercut, Perfect Places ⭐⭐⭐⭐: Really liked it. Saved a bunch of tracks.
I've always kinda liked Lorde despite not being into the modern pop girl scene. That being said it mostly stayed on the singles from Pure Heroine. This ain't bad for sure, I could see myself lisening to rest of her stuff someday. (Insert Randy Marsh joke here) 7/10
Enjoyable and honestly really good. I never thought much about Lorde beyond her radio hits, but clearly I was missing something.
Surprisingly nice to hear
It's pretty good. Very Kate Bush.
It’s a beautiful electronic pop album with just great vocals. Lorde undoubtedly deserves the attention she has received. Plus green light is just so iconic.
sad party girl music. Redeemed by mostly interesting rhythms (ala Glass Animals before they were bad).
Loved this record when it came out, I had a coworker who played it constantly and I wasn't complaining. Really wonderful album
The louvre, writer in the dark, and one of the best songs lyrically liability will always have such a special place in my heart. Near perfect album and the cover is just so dreamy and beautiful and suits the album’s overall aesthetic so well.
This genre isn't my usual cup of tea, but Lorde does create some good music, and has an incredible voice. There wasn't a song on this album that felt superfluous. Was a solid listen, and could definitely see myself spinning it again.
Not usually my go-to listening style, but a very solid pop album. I can see why she hit so strongly when she first started making it around.
Great lyrics. Reminds me of my early 20s. Love sober and sober II (melodrama)
Somber Happiness
Surprised by how enjoyable this record was. Kind of a bit repetitive in style, but well-written
Definitely no "sophomore slump" on this second Lorde album. Maybe not as groundbreaking as the first but very good throughout.
# Album Name: Melodrama # Artist: Lourde # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Strong opening to the album. First three tracks are solid. Gets a bit long in the tooth after that. Lourde has a great voice and a distinct style. This albums better than some of the stuff ive listened to recently. # Top Tunes: GL / Sober / Dynamite / writer in the dark / supercut # Would I listen to it again? Probably give it another listen
Probably closer to a 3 but liked it more than I expected. Jack Antoff is a good producer
I am not usually a big fan for pop music, no matter how it's sliced (power, indie, pure, etc.). But this was really good and I enjoyed the whole album (I was teary eyed in a couple moments.) She definitely deserves her accolades. 4 poppy stars.
I am Lorde. Ya ya ya. But seriously it’s a good album. The songs have a good range so don’t sound the same as each other. They are catchy but don’t seem overly produced as some pop songs.
Fun album I forgot Lourde made music after 2013
I listened to this album when it was released. It is good, but not quite great. I really like her voice and the variety of songs on this album though
Surprised I never got round to listening to this. Overall, excellent alt-pop with plenty of hooks, great production and strong vocals. Standouts were The Louvre and Hard Feelings.
Listened to this when shit sucks, so now I’m biased. Supercut good as hell tho
Sick
Entusiasma, gusta, gusta
This is such a great album. I used to think Lorde was overrated until I listened to Melodrama for the first time only a few months ago. Green Light is a perfect opener. So full of energy and passion. And then to close it with another piece of pop perfection in Perfect Places. To be this inspired and expressive at such a young age - I could subsist on just this for a long time. What the fuck are perfect places indeed.
A few really strong highlights and some in betweens. Will return to it
Good
Good listen, low and soulful with good beats. - 4/5
Sad girl music that doesn't depress.
Kind of a perfect pop album. No skips; basically every song has really grown on me / become an all-timer imo.
More mellow than drama.
Solid pop all the way through. A surprise hit for me
A pretty good dark and moody album with some decent sense good bass lines, and drums. Still dripping with post teenage angst, the melodies and lyrics are brooding and pull no punches while leaving a message of “this is my art and if you don’t like it then too fucking bad”
I was obsessed with this album in 2017. It doesn't hit quite as hard for me these days, but there are a lot of bangers here. I think Pure Heroine had more of an impact though.
*** 1/2 Knew her name but never listened to Lorde before. Actually thought she is doing hard rock. She doesn't. Must say I like her voice and the relaxed songs with good lyrics. Had the impression it sounds a bit the same over time. Anyway, a discovery.
Feels a bit more electronic version of Taylor Swift. I'm impressed. Solid music. Good songwriting. Interesting pop album
Wow!
*my wife from the other room* “LORDE????” This is a beautiful album, really well produced and extremely well written. I don’t love every song on this thing but it’s such a strong album. I really loved pure heroine when it came out and this is like the refined version. Guess I gotta listen to the whole discography now.
Started as a 5/5 with the first 3 songs but then it became clearly less inspired as the record went on. For a while I thought this was going to be one of the best pop records and then it got boring with all the same Lorde vocal tricks and dramatic instrumentation. I'm still going with a 4/5, but if Lorde can string together a whole album that's engaging, it'd definitely make it's way into a 5 for me.
I think I've listened to this one years ago but truly cannot recall. I've always respected Lorde but never really connected with her radio hits. This albums was very good! Fantastic use of placing her voice within the sound stage. Favorite Song: Sober
Lords is doing unique shit. I don’t like all of it, but I like that she’s singing very personal songs, songs that sound like she crawled out of her hangover bed and wrote down the immediate feelings.
There is no other album that better represents what it felt like to be a teenage girl in the late 2010s. This is like the bible for women currently in their mid/late twenties. Despite my ongoing disdain towards Jack Antonoff, I think this is his magnum opus as a producer. The sound here is electric and alive. Together, he and Lorde utilized an array of contrasting sounds and production elements to create a sonic masterpiece. The songwriting is melodramatic, and it only adds to the album's cohesion and overall theme. This is a story being told through music, and it is done near perfectly. I will always be grateful for Lorde's commitment to giving depth and meaning to the teenage experience. The songs on this album have meant a lot to me throughout my life, and I know many other people feel the same. Everyone say, "Thank you, Lorde."
a solid little pop album that i do have some nostalgia for, but there are little breaks in it i dislike (i internally groan every time at the "still the louvre" or generally every time she drops the singing for a spoken line) and the sort of romanticization you get in songs like Writer in the Dark will never not be annoying to me, but overall very good
So creative and powerful. This is pop for the 2010s and 2020s. Of all the amazing young women making incredible pop music these days, Ella might be my favorite.
I adore lorde's debut album and so when this came out I was always comparing it to that, and in my opinion the first is better. Therefore I always just kind of dismissed this regardless of it's hype. But listening back now I really like it, she has a really interesting way with words and tunes that seem to subvert my expectations of where the song is going. Her hooks are fascinating and the production work behind it has some incredible ideas in it. I'm not so fond of the fact that it went a bit dancier and I still don't really like all of the lyrics "the light up floor" always felt awkward, a bit like when bloc party started singing about sudokus. However I suspect it is this same weird approach to lyrics in other tracks that I actually really like. Plus I enjoy the hounds of love reference drum fill. I can't decide if I enjoyed it enough to make it 5 stars. Maybe her debut is 5 and this is a very high 4.
I defienetly liked this album!!! It was really catchy, but I appreciated it after I listened to it twice. I liked the vocal of Lorde and the vibe of songs. They were really interesting and easy to listen.
The last of her good albums i fear
happy to listen again.
Really like this. Have heard a lot about her but haven’t heard much of her music
I'm a kid of the 21st century of course I love this album
Godt album. Jeg var specielt glad for "Liability"
I like the chronological way the album's setlist is distributed, in one way or another that makes it perfect, the problem is how suddenly there is no noticeable change in the plot, so the last 3 songs could have been better thought out in my opinion.
Love Lorde, great record. I must question this list once again. Pure Heroine probably but man… this guy is super British. It would be on my favorites but don’t know why it’s on all time. Time will tell. 7.4
Really like her sound since her first album
Classic Lorde
Lyrics driven.
An outstanding pop record, Lorde crafts a more nuanced and a bit less catchy album that Pure Heroine, but in turn gains a lot in introspection and gets to showcase her writing abilities accompanied by great production. The highlight of this project is Lorde's songwriting and execution. She's an excellent lyricist, painting vivid images with lyrics that are also catchy. She's also a great singer, delivering different tones and inflexions for different moments. The production is really polished and accompanies her very well. My favourite production was the more pop oriented. I'm not much of a fan of Antonoff's work, but here it works pretty well, complimenting the more stripped down and emotional tracks. My absolute favourite here is "Homemade Dynamite", it's a bop and one of Lorde's best songs. "Green Light" is also great, and I really liked "Supercut" too.
Lorde cements herself at the top of modern day pop with this album.
I wasn't listening to a lot of pop music in 2017, so I did miss this when it came out, but I was at least aware of it. This is a very good pop album, Melodrama took a good few years to release, and that seems to be reflected in the level of detail on display here. The content here also seems very personal to Lorde, it doesn't feel like she felt the need to fit a certain public perception of her, or chase trends. Consequently, we are rewarded with a pretty distinct album. The songs feel as polished as any other mainstream pop album from this time, and it is also quite a bit busier than Pure Heroine, but there is honestly a lot of restraint here too. Like a lot of these songs feel very dynamic and intentional. A lot of the material is really catchy too: (almost) always good for pop. Green Light, Sober, Homemade Dynamite and The Louvre are probably the most immediate songs here, but the more subdued feeling back half also has a lot of good stuff. This is a real success as far as it intended to be an accessible pop album without sacrificing artistic integrity, and I see why this warrants a spot on the list.
more a 7-7.5, but
I enjoyed this album. I like the music of Lorde, she is a very unique writer and singer. I saw her in concert when she was first gaining popularity and she had a cool and calm rapport with the audience.
This isn’t my favorite Lorde album but good nonetheless
Such a fun album. I really enjoy Lorde's songwriting and signature vocals. Pop is a bit out of my comfort zone, so I could feel myself grating against an occasional poppy motif. Overall, excellent.
She is about to cry. I had t read the lyrics to see why she was so depressed. It just brings me down. Not for me.
I have always been underwhelmed by the main single off this album. I ended up not really paying much attention to Lorde since that first big hit she had. But I will say I liked this album more and more as I listened to it. I liked the later songs more and some of her lyrics really capture heartbreak in a very poetic and unique manner.
I didn’t know what to expect from this one but I really enjoyed it. Wasn’t as upbeat as Royals and Team, but I think that worked out better this way. Will definitely come back to this one again.
I really like this album, but why is it on the list and not 'Pure Heroine'? This is a really good sophomore album, but why not give us the best album? A defining album that launched a career and has millions of radio plays. It's making me doubt the list a little bit. I'm just saying why not give us Randy Marsh's best work.
An amalgan of hauntingly nostalgic vocals and Electro-Pop elements. The most well known song is "perfect places".
A really solid modern pop album. I definitely liked it a lot, green lights, and a few tracks really stood out to me as classic hits. I almost kick myself for not looking into Lord as much when I was listening to music at the time, but now is a good time to catch up. I think four stars is good.
Quality pop. Some really cool bangers on here!
Enjoyed
Álbum muito bom! Curti. CVJ Neko.
Það sem ég sagði um the wildest, hélt ég væri að rate-a þessa 👵🏻 hin fannst mér hörkuskemmtileg
I am a fan of the polished art pop style / movement led by female musicians of the 00s.
Supercut is the best song in the album, however the rest of the album is mediocre but I still enjoy it. I love the end of the album the last 3 songs make it. Consistent and lovable but I think it just reaches 4 stars, barely
Great vocals and production
Gaman að heyra ákveðið sánd í gegnum plötuna. Ansi fín plata. Gæti þurft að hlusta aftur til að meta hana betur.
Not my style or an album I would reach for, but I'm not denying that the Lorde sound works. She has the right voice for the specific music and those lyrics, and it all works as a package more than any individual element.
actually didnt expect it to be so enjoyable. i mean ive known about the album for a year or two, also had "Liability" in one of my old playlists, but never considered Lorde as my thing. but liability gave me so many flashbacks.. overall, the album gives such a vibe of the 2016-17 era. when i listened to it, it felt like i was 13-15 again, it was the end of spring, summer was coming and i wanted to have a new era, or smtng like that. the soundtrack to a hot, young and free summer, with nothing that needs to be done in front of me. note - some of the instrumentals really surprised me (in a good way)
I was ready to give this album a not-so-bad-rating but it gradually improved for me. Went from something pop-ish to an ethereal dream right in the middle. Solid work from Lorde in my books.
Strong 3.5
Ricardo. Nota: 3.7
Very surprised with how much I liked this. Almost hints of The Knife on some of the early tracks.
thoughts: an album full of songs i could picture taylor swift doing, but none as well as lorde did here. i didn’t love “handmade dynamite,” but everything else is fantastic. i’m glad she linked “hard feelings/loveless” together too; that’s a great little transition to the back half of the album. songs: “green light”, “the louvre”, “supercut” rating: 8.7/10
First time listening to this album. Enjoyed the music. Will have to look our for more of this musician!
Not the first time I am hearing this. It is an album that I really like. The first track, Green Light, I have heard way too many times without even trying which makes me believe that it was the lead single song of the album. It is a good song but I don't really pay as much attention to what it is actually saying because I have heard it so many times and it immediately turns to background noise. Liability is the song that made me like the album the most. It is also one of the few songs overall that have made me cry. The Louvre: Really enjoyed it except for the "broadcast the boom, boom, boom, boom and make them all dance to it" part, which I also don't really get. At some point during the "I get caught up just for a minute/But lover you are the one to blame" part, it really reminded me of Taylor Swift for whatever reason. Overall, one of the songs that I did not remember and it exceeded whatever expectations I had.
84/100.
I think I like pop
A bit nice songwriter pop
Electropop isn't a genre I'd have explored in my own time, so I'm appreciative towards 1001 Albums for pushing me out of my comfort zone. I began 1001 Albums to expand my music taste last February. Truth be told, I used to be extremely picky about what I listen to, stuck to a strict classic rock diet, and barely even tolerated The Velvet Underground. While my stance towards hip hop has not budged, I have become more tolerant of pop music. "Melodrama" is a funky, musical dream that feels like peeking through a kaleidoscope. The album cover is an accurate representation of "Melodrama's" sound. The production is crisp. Bless my ears. Although I know she's affiliated with Charli xcx, I'm not familiar with Lorde. However, I like her sound.
Sitting by a river is a perfect place to listen to this album. Some damn good songs on here and very enjoyable overall.
Admittedly I’d written Lorde off as something of a one hit wonder after “Royals” came and went over 10 years ago, but apparently she had more to give. Honestly not sure why she’s not mentioned in the same conversations as Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, or Charlie XCX, but I honestly think she fits right in. Good listen
Overall, a real gem of an album by a young artist living up to the hype. All of it done before her 21st birthday. There are worse hands in which to place the future of music. https://constitutioncenter.org/blog/when-the-supreme-court-ruled-to-allow-american-flag-burning
THIS IS MY SHIIIITTTT para mi tiene nota alta vale joder La música qe me ponía con 12 años para cortarme las venas en el baño vamooo NOTA: 4'5
Have had Green Light on repeat since watching Lorde’s Glasto set. Absolute banger, the rest is decent and I really enjoyed Perfect Places as well. Solid four, and with a couple more bangers it could’ve been knocking on the fiver door. Simpsons: No
Starts off with the best song on the album. The others were good/ok, but they didn't hit the same heights. Overall, a good, solid effort from Lorde.
I had some notes here that may or may not be related to Melodrama by Lorde. Now they're gone. I listened to this two times through. "Green Light" shows up on New Girl and I had no real idea it was Lorde. Maybe I knew at some point. The brain is mush. I wish I still cared!
I'm waiting for it that green light I want it
great album! my favs are “Homemade Dynamite” and “Green Light”
yes pls
Pretty cool
Green light is an absolute banger. That song will definitely last the test of time. Production is truly great on this album. The style and vocal gets repetitive at times. Enjoyed the album more than I thought I would. 3.5/5. Raising to 4.
4.3/multiple songs and even their lyrics have been seared into my memory. can't beat that.
Melodrama! Certainly is. This album is one of few that I encounter and feel something original. Lorde is a completely unique artist that does a very nice job of straddling the line of experimental and enjoyable. This album is fantastic start to finish and has some of her best songs. The vocals, production, lyrics, and writing are all great. Love this one. 4/5
Lovely album
Surprisingly more introspective and dreamy than I would’ve thought given her singles. Very good listen.
Melodrama feels like college and late-night chaos in the best way. Green Light and The Louvre still hit, Liability still hurts, and the production throughout is top-tier. I’ve heard it a million times, but it never fully lets go.
Really nice, went well with the day I had
Exceeded expectations by a good bit. Some of the ballad-y stuff was just so-so, but a few of these tracks--"Sober II (Melodrama" "Liability" especially--really hit. It's profoundly un-fun pop music, which is a tough needle to thread. I didn't know her much beyond "Royals" aside from knowing she was lauded across the spectrum, but I may check out more after this.
Distinctive voice.
Amazing
I love Lordes delivery on this album her voice is on point and she uses it as a instrument in itself. The tracks are solid especially Green Light it is a clever pop song with simplisity in the chords but made so much pionient with her voice married to it.
Surprisingly good, especially the back half. I am familiar with other Jack antonoff records and enjoyed this as much as Lana del rays NFR
Only song I knew before this from the album was Green Light which is the highlight of the album Some hits some misses but generally at least okay/good and definitely more hits than misses for me Not the greatest of the pop girlies but a good one nonetheless, and it's a good sad breakup album
I feel the production, songwriting and overall feel of this album are super influential in that so much tries to sound like this from 2017 on, but there are some really stellar moments on here. Influential for a reason!
Green Light Homemade Dynamite The Louvre Liability Perfect Places
Not massively into it but I'm not the target audience. Will trust you lot. Plus gotta back the local lass. I have fond memories of when 95bfm was playing Royals before she'd broken through.
Very pleasant pop with the right dose of teenage angst
I’ve only heard a few songs by Lorde before and never really listened all that closely. As soon as I started this album the Jack Antonoff production was obvious, and I didn’t initially like her voice. But it grew on me as the album progressed. I ended up enjoying it quite a bit, and will now seek out her other albums.
Honestly, pure dubs here. Love the sound, it’s refreshing hearing something that I could stumble across myself in my kinda vibes. 3.5 imo
This music is so familiar that it's difficult to rate. I enjoy it, it's full of emotion, and catchy. I like the story being told. But some of the songs miss, I just don't LOVE it. A strong 4 star album - Modern pop! Very Jack Antonoff - A little bit too plain for 5 stars I think, but strong album, probably earns a 2nd listen - I hear a lot of Taylor Swift in this, but there's a distinct roughness/blurriness to this, where TS is so polished and clean. Gives a different vibe - On 2nd listen and looking at lyrics, I appreciate it more. Still not 5 stars unfortunately.
Strong compositions.
It’s been a few years since I listened to this, and it’s better than I remember, but not as amazing as Pure Heroine.
Really good! Liked it way more than expected and would revisit this one. Just a legitimately good pop album, great chill background music.
It's good, filled with great choruses and pop songwriting, I just can't quite bring myself to give it a 5. It's a 4.
At the beginning of the pandemic when I was working a million hours, I would take dance breaks to Green Light and it was a bright spot in those long days. I’ve loved that song for years but had never listened to the rest of the album. I really enjoyed it, especially Liability, Loveless, and Writer in the Dark. Sober II gave me Imogen Heap vibes and the album as a whole reminded me of Olivia Rodrigo’s slower songs. 4.5 rounded down.
When this came out, it got a large amount of hype, and I really tried, but I didn’t get it. I maybe liked it a little more today, but still not fully there. I want Lorde to be a different artist than she wants to be here. That’s fine. She’s allowed to change as an artist and I’m allowed to not follow her. This is like a 3.5, but I’ll round up.
