Reviews (page 7 of 7)

I just could not get into this. I'm sure it's fine if you like this style of music, but it put me to sleep - multiple times

This album is supposedly a tight 37 minutes but it felt endless. Every song after the intro sounds identical. This is supposed to be one of the best 1001 albums? I’m so upset one spot was wasted on this monotonous honky-tonk crooning.

Rubbish

i don't really know why this is on here. aside from two songs, "the wild side of life" and "are you sure", this album is a total snooze fest. every song is the same meter, mostly the same instrumentation, same key, same 2:25 in length. it's the epitome of easy listening music, which is the epitome of music that bores the ever living shit out of me. save for the two songs i mention above, this would be a 0 star album for me.

Music goes here to die.

Not for me. Talented singer with a great voice but I feel nothing listening to this.

Not my music...

too country for me

Nope :-(

“Yeah so I drank a bottle of gin and battered my girlfriend. I’ve had a lot of time to reflect whilst in jail and listen... I’m not saying I definitely won’t do it any again but I’ll at least leave a little gap before i do” - Ray Price on ‘Sittin & Thinkin’, 1963.

Kind of soppy country I can't get into.

Very twangy torch songs. Not bad but not really my jam.

This is not an essential album.

Very boring, not even worth a 2

Rating: 3/10 Simply not my thing. A record for listening to in a seedy country bar or nightclub in the 50's except this was even made in the 60's. I was really waiting for it to end, the samey songs never sparked any semblance of joy

Thanks for the introduction Ray. How about you just play and assume the audience can figure out how music works? Willie wrote some of the songs so I'm hopeful. I don't dislike the title track, it's pretty much that post-Hank Williams, 50s/60s Country music; Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, Glen Campbell. This cat is not a fan of partying and loose women. This is a depressing album. I guess all country music was sad back in the day. Maybe the real Outlaw Country change was not having every song make you want to hang yourself. This whole album is like the easy listening Country classics late night CD offer.

Couldn’t finish

Fuck. This.

Oh boy, Ray Price out here trying to make me eat my words on my last review.

It's always nice to listen to something a bit different but this was dull and forgettable.

Old nothing for me music

Dear Lord above, NO

Meh. Slide guitar gets tedeous after a while.

Not a fan at all

Country, 34 eme album => 1/5

50's beach sinatra

Elvis meets Sinatra playing honky tonky country whining about the hardships of living on the road, passing hotels, bars, one-night stands, heartache and regrets? Nah, I pass. 1/1

I still really don't like country music.

The couple on the front of this album cover are almost certainly cousins.

I couldn’t finish this album. After listening to the first 3 songs I had enough. 1.5

God, I just loathe country music, with extra spicy antipathy towards this honky tonk bullshit. I don't know if Ray Price was racist, but I presume he was because country is music made for racists by racists.

Just a misogynistic tool having a sook about women being happy, the big whores!

This is without a doubt a most forgettable album.

Title track was okay, but the rest is garbage 60's country.

Sorry Ray, but it's not great. The kind of music we successfully moved past from. A 2*, but loses a star for some remarkably sexist tracks in the back end.

Not for me

Just another dull country album tbh. 3/10, but gets 1* as it's non-essential.

< the Beatles No thank you.

not technically bad, but all i could think about was how much i wanted it to be over so…

Starting your album thanking people for listening probably means it's not worth listening to. Cheesy.

Nope, thank you.

Music like this is now so Fallout, Lynch or Tarantino coded that I wonder whether this really was ever meant as a genuine, straight-forward expression. "Here are some good, meaningful tunes that are totally not weird or ominous!"? Because, without those pop-cultural references, at face value, I should be able to compare "Night Life" to e.g. John Prine's country from his debut (album #20) from 8 years later. In both musical and lyrical content. And then I would: conclude that this here is irksome, awkward, boring, and insignificant junk - which is precisely what I'm going to do.

Very old timey country. If Sinatra had a cowboy hat and a twangy guitar, this could be it. Nice vocals, but just couldn’t get into it. Still not a country music fan!

I really hated it. Too old-fashioned for me. Didn’t help that I’m not a country music fan.

Frank Sinatra but just as boring

Took a bit of stamina to get through this collection of country crooning. Not for me.

Hell no.

This is so slow, and I like country. It’s crooner but it’s also country, but boring due to single focus on monotone storytelling with guitar. All songs sound the same. How can this be a recommended must listen to album out of 1,001? No

I want you to imagine what you think old 50's and 60's country sounds like. The music, the imagery, the vocals. Whatever it is you've got in your head is exactly what this album sounds like. It's very slow and moody. I can imagine old timers sitting around playing poker in an old saloon. Thirteen tracks over 37 minutes and 8 seconds and it all sounds the same. I know I've said that previously in other album reviews but this one really does. Randomly drop into any of the songs at any time stamp, and then do it again for another song and there's no difference, bar maybe the tempo. It's all very pleasant but it's not my kind of music at all. If you like this genre, then it's probably an easy five stars. If you're having a "Wild West" themed party, stick this on and you'll set the mood perfectly. I found this very boring and very samey. There's absolutely no way that I needed to hear this at any point in my life. Is it culturally significant? Did it inspire other artists? I've never heard of the guy and his Wikipedia page is very short. Night Life? More like Shite Life. One star.

1/5 not for me

Tråk, lyssnade bara på 1 låt

Both blues and country? No can do. Loved the whimsy of the first song, though, having him introduce the album in his sort of transatlantic and affected speaking style.

Fell asleep

For an album with such a high concentration of the word 'honky-tonk' in its lyrics, I sure was bored. And I feel bad, because (after the initial terror of him speaking to me at the start of the album) he seems like a sweetie. 'thanks for being so nice on our last album' 🥺 unfortunately I'm less nice, I guess. I don't have a vehement hatred of it but I really can't give it any other rating. Also, while the song about all your worries coming at night was super relatable, I could only listen in disbelief to the one whose storyline was basically 'sorry I beat you and literally got put in jail and it will happen again but you'll stay with me right'. hm

This classic country album isn’t filled with the twangy whiny crap I hate, I still didn’t enjoy it. It’s just not a genre I find impressive or enjoy. Ray Price’s voice is at least not off-putting, so I’ll give it a 2 for that.

What kind of hell is this? There's some good songs on the album, and good musicians in the band, but Mr Price must be the most bo-ring singer ever. He sucks the life out of every song, and leaves the bones behind. Wish I could give it zero, or minus marks.

I don't like country music. Sorry not sorry.

Eh. Feels like I'm wading through bad music recommendations.

Didn't do much for me. Maybe it was the hottest thing in '63.

Gene Autry type stuff, might be for someone but not for me

No thanks. What a relic of the past. It was funny for 2 songs, but I can't sit through a whole album of this.

Not for me. They felt like pot boilers and I didn't like this album at all.

I enjoy my share of country music, but I really don't care for Ray Price's vocal delivery. I made it through the first 3 songs (and the overlong intro) and bailed on this. His version of "Night Life" is grating. I'll stick with Willie Nelson's.

Alright background music I guess.

Not my cup of tea

Definitely the greatest Ray Price album of all time. 1/2 star.

A pretty decent classic country album, I just don't like country.

I can’t do C&W especially when it’s just songs about women being loose of morals. No wonder America can’t elect a female president.

Not my cup of tea

country halt .. nettes gesäusel nebenbei.

I had to stop halfway through. Good lord this was awful. References to "Honky-tonk angels" and doubts as to whether his girlfriend would make a good wife are the general thrust of this album. 0.5/5.0: Unlistenable

Ahh now

Too twangy for me

Ihan hirvee. Edes tekstit ei pelasta. 1/5

Another occasion where subscribing to this list has expanded my musical knowledge as I’ve never heard of Ray Price before. In this case I didn’t need it expanding as it’s a record I do not like. Cannot say I’m familiar too much with the songs on the album. Although listening to them it took me back to my early years when my Dad was prone to wake up the whole house singing songs whilst shaving (a thing I’ve inherited) A lot of these songs sounded just like the ones on this album. He left us nearly 40 years ago so I cannot check but an album like this would have been right up his street. The introduction on track 1 is not to my liking. Once you’ve heard it once what’s the point of listening to it again? A waste of track space. I bet the majority of the original vinyl albums still in existence have a major click at the beginning of track 2 as evidence of the owners trying to drop the needle past track 1 to avoid spoken repetition. Unless of course, as I am led to believe in those days music lovers had listening parties and played the full album to their friends as if at a concert. Oh what fun they must have had! 1/5 10/7/24

I actually really enjoyed it. However, it was not special in any way.

This is exactly what I would expect from something of this era.

I love that older albums are on this list, but, I don't know if this does anything specific for music that isn't accomplished elsewhere.

I may be shorter than I normally would be to a country western artist, but this is the 3rd country western album I've listened to in 3 days. I do not like the genre, so I did not enjoy any of the 37 minutes and 8 seconds I spent listening to this album. I do think this was the least enjoyable of the 3, but I think that very well could be because each country western album has chipped away at my soul to make the subsequent albums feel worse and worse.

That's a very disappointing one for me. Just getting more into country classics I was excited for this. But, just wasn't doing anything. Bland, monotonic, and not even nighly enough to justify the name. Sad.

Fallen out of time.

Not for me 1/5

Horrible

Blast from the country past

It’s like one sleepy, sleepy 37 minute long country western song. Did make us feel like we were plodding through a dusty desert on horseback. But who wants to do that? (0.8*s)

Oof. Mellow voices and soft music, but this is that old timey shit I dont like at all lol

I really thought the biggest struggle of this challenge would be RnB, Soul and maybe Jazz. But no, who would’ve thought? It’s the dull, depressing 60s Country albums that turn up from time to time. I will be forgetting this one immediately.

There are like 5 albums I can name off the top of my head that are infinitely more inventive than this dullard of an LP, yet didn't make the list. I get the inclusion of Elvis and Ray Charles, but I've never heard someone talk about Ray Price like that, and it really makes this list feel so much weaker.

Seriously????? First twang of that steel guitar and I knew I'd hate this album. Thousands of awesome albums have been made by many artistes for decades, but just ignore them all, as this album generator keeps churning out this wonky tonk country crap. Only good thing I'll say is that the vocals were OK... bit still can't stand country... even if they put a wonky tonk spin on it.

oh god no

Country Music from the 60's.

Pretty awful...I almost dislike this type of country more than modern popcountry. 1/5

Gear: DCA ÆON 2 Noire Mix: unerwartet beeindruckende Soundstage. Vocals und Hula/Country-Gitarre mit absurd-irritierendem Hall. Vernehmbares Rauschen in stillen Parts. Musik: 🤮 Wertung: 🤠/5

Album Nr. 33 Langweilig.

Had a little trouble getting through this album. There were a lot of songs that all sounded the same to me...especially with the sound and style of playing the bass. However, Price's vocals are very good and I enjoyed the pedal steel and sleet guitar work which saved the listening experience for me. If I had to pick favorite tracks they would be: The Twenty Fourth Hour and Bright Lights and Blonde Haired Women.

can't stand C&W

The music is neither interesting nor particularly bad; just a standard slow dance/country sound. But unfortunately, every other song is a PSA against partying specifically for women, with the singer playing the nice guy that the girl should be with. No wonder the women in all those other songs have left him, as he seems like a total buzzkill. Showing the less glamorous side of nightlife is a fine theme for an album - but a bit more variety in how stories are told would be good. As it is, the women get blanket advice, while the singer can make his own decisions, learn from mistakes, and deal with heartache by writing songs (the only option for a woman to be happy again is apparently by getting a boyfriend or better yet, husband).

I can only conclude a honky tonk women killed his parents

God fucking dammit, I loathe country music. Dire.

Feels like listening to Mid West radio or a cd in the car with my dad. I never say I hate a genre but this comes close.

I thought honky tonk shuffle had some movement to it, some energy. This just sits there like a glob of oatmeal. The tempo of the music remains the same throughout, Ray’s singing never changes in inflection or volume, the melodies and themes are of the songs are indistinguishable. It’s the musical equivalent of watching a luggage carousel slowly trudge around and around and around in an empty airport for 37 minutes and 8 seconds.

I hated it. Yup. Moralising and dull. Terrible combo.

This album has ruined my morning and filled me with rage. This album is 100% mysogyny.. I'm on the last one right now and he's just telling this woman that her friends don't like her, look at your life, essentially sort yourself out and I'm the only one who loves you. A song which screams coercive control. There was another really perverse one criticising a woman for being a young fool and how cute it is that's she's not silly but tomorrow her life is fucked and life will ruin her. It appeared to be she was just drinking in a bar and he was observing her and patronisingly saying how her life was going to go shit imminently. Eugh. So many instructions to women in this album. No wonder the 60s were sexist as fuck when the backing track was this absolute nonsense, instructing men how to control women under the guise of a sweet little ballad. Also it's just all boring. Every song sounded the same.

Waste of time

I tried. Really.

too american

I had hoped, on getting a fleeting first glance at the album art, that this might have been a jazz album. It is not jazz. It is the countriest of country music. Not something I'd ever want to listen to.

Not for me

Around the time that people started finding hidden messages when they spun a vinyl album backwards, there was a fun joke circulating: Question: What happens if you play a country music record backwards? Answer: You get your car back, your dog back and your wife back. While I thought this joke was clever, I also considered myself at least a pseudo country fan so didn’t really agree with it. This Ray Price album validates that joke. If you listen to albums like this, your dog will definitely run away, your wife will leave and your car will be repossessed. No doubt about it.

"I didn't know God made honky tonk angels" Zingt Ray ergens op dit plaatje.

Country no

I really hate weepy, moany county music.

It's country and I suffered through it. Thankfully it was less than 40 mins.

boring

My dad would like this. Not me though.

Yes I didn't like this at all 1/5 Cheap Frank Sinatra, literally has the same song twice with a different name. I want my 35 minutes back

Old school country, simpelt

Couldn't finish. Got about 5 tracks before I was bored.

Curious amalgam of Frank Sinatra, Frank Ifield and Hank Williams, but considerably inferior to all three. Surely worst version of 'Wild side of life' ever recorded. Very annoying cheesy slide guitar all over everything. This would have been very popular in the early 50/60s but doesn't stand the test of time very well.

this is what old pubs in liverpool sound like in the daytime. this is turd.

Verfilzt Flokatige 1.4

Looking at the Wikipedia page I expected to find a good Johnny Cash-style style songs, but it was just an old classic country album without any innovation. I understood the importance of this kind of music for music history, but it's not my taste

not for me.
