Mostly repetitive.
Not for me - a bit too repetitive. I guess I'm not a Drum & Bass fan!
This album was a mixed bag for me, ethereal and atmospheric but also some of the relentless repetition nearly tipped me into moments of temporary insanity.
omg, this album makes me anxious Almost 5 stars but -1 because the songs are too long.
Oh jeez thus was just brutal. It's too damn long for one thing. This could be less than half of its length. Its also just not very interesting to me. Maybe people that like this kind of thing see it as a classic. Perhaps it's highly influential (the wikipedia page does seem to indicate this) but I can't say that I enjoyed any of it at all. I was bored from the get go and it just went on and in and on and on. Listening to this, for me, must be like all the people hearing Scum and giving it a 1. At least Napalm Death has the courtesy to be brief.
Took two listens to really get it, but once I did I loved it.
Big Roni Size fan but had not heard this album end-to-end. I really enjoyed it and will probably revisit. This artist sent me down a big drum n bass rabbit hole back in the 90s that I still dive into from time to time. Love the jazz and (light) reggae influences, and the vocals, while not always my cup of tea, aren't overly distracting and in the case of "watching windows" really add to it.

Drum and Bass doesn't do much for me. I understand the appreciation for fast, danceable rhythms but I'm not really that kind of guy. A lot of this album feels very samey and not all that interesting outside of the sort of jazz influence. This reminds me a lot of the music I'd hear in Parkour Fortress servers that I would play on when I was younger, which was a fun soundtrack for running around to. I'm going to go play that now.
Reminds me of an old friend who I haven’t seen in a long time. The most positive thing I can say here. Not my thing.

Didn't mind this one at all and there were some fun bits here and there (Beatbox especially) but it did not need to be so long
New Forms is the debut album by British EDM group Roni Size & Reprazent. It's a drum and bass album that earned a lot of commercial success, including the 1997 Mercury Prize and being certified platinum in the UK. This is one of the first albums centering on drum and bass and it's considered the group's magnum opus. I loved the energetic drums combined with the booming bass, in addition to the nostalgia factor of hearing old school EDM. This is a great album for any EDM lovers, or music history buffs that want to hear one of the albums that blossomed the electronic dance craze.
Perfect for when you're craving a hangover but don't want the empty calories that come from drinking 15 Jack & Cokes.
A really interesting genre, the bare-bones D&B tunes aren't really my thing, but add some melody and some of these are really good.
Didn’t like this one very much. Was able to get through it but I just didn’t care for it. I thought it was kinda creative at times and it made me feel nostalgic for the 90s, but that’s about it.

This is a weird one to review. I didn't hate it but I also didn't notice when the album was over and Spotify autoplayed an unknown number of other drum and bass songs. Good background music. It's possible Roni Size influenced those additional tracks but my untrained ear doesn't know it. Favorite: Brown Paper Bag
Too long! I’ve lost patience and given up before Ben the first hour is up. The drum and bass is good enough, but too much airy-fairy ambience and electro blips. What’s wrong with distilling it down to under 60 minutes of proper songs - even Brown paper bag and Heroes out stay their (admittedly enjoyable) welcome. Another reason to see the Mercury Music Prize as pretentious, overblown and a bit snooty really. I do appreciate that they are trying to be cool, edgy and relevant by praising black music, but really?! I would have given 3 if it was under 60 minutes!

Not a fan of dnb, gives me a headache
The Drum and Bass album it's ok to like. Phat (yep, phat) beats, use of double bass and and faceless waif vocals. It's bloated as a double album, and could be the argument needed when saying some doubles should be trimmed down to one disc. Best Tracks: Brown Paper Bag; Heroes; Hi-Potent

Brown paper bag would make very good telephone hold music.. ..and that's about it for me. Lots of strange noises, beats, electronica - nothing of any interest. Mad cat sounds like a modern version of The Waiting Room from The Lamb.. and that predates this by 45 years - so not as new as he'd like to think.
Jungle DJ has too much rhythm to trip himself up while finding his feet.
Way too long. I don't like the sounds on this one. Maybe I'm just used to a better version of this genre.
Very repetitive. Each song sound like a repetitive loop, played over and over again - repetitively. (Notice how repetitive I was there?) Not one song really stood out as unique or interesting. It is worth playing in the background when you don't care what you're listening to, so, I give it a 2 of 5
Yes, this is great! I already know and love this album. Drum and bass is a style of electronic music I'm not massively familiar with. I guess it's mostly a singles-oriented club genre - but this one is an ambitious, fully-realised album that also makes you want to get on a dancefloor. I love the cerebral ambient moments combined with thumping energy. I love the basslines, which I guess are often being sampled from jazz/funk/soul records? I actually think the shorter version (which was originally the 1CD/cassette release) works amazingly in a single sitting, but I'm not opposed to hearing the whole 140-minute double album anytime! 5*
I knew I'd been served a shit sandwich 3 seconds in. Made it a handful of songs in but the repetitive clicks and pops were giving me a headache so I had to give up.

I remember absolutely hating this when it came out in 1997, I was a guitars-and-bucket-hats indie kid and this was just painful, particularly Brown Paper Bag which was *everywhere*. People were raving about this album and I just didn't get it. 25 years on, and my musical horizons have widened, and although I don't hate it quite as much, I don't really get the fuss. It seems to be the same beat all the way through with noodly moogs. I won't turn off Brown Paper Bag in disgust anymore these days, but I don't really want to listen to a whole album of it. Especially one that goes on for 78min.
Hmmmm. Yeah this is a strange one... there's some musical stuff to be heard on here, but I just don't understand the purpose of this music. Is it techno, is it soul, is it pop? Whatever it is, it sure ain't for me. Strange to deem this one of the 1001.

VERY repetitive. While I’m not huge into electronic music, I’ve been exposed to and enjoyed plenty of it. This was 3 hours of the same beeps and boops over and over and is the FIRST album through 568 reviewed so far that I could not finish. Miss me with that nearly 3 hour run time holy fuck, learn to shorten your shit.
You can't be serious. 2 hours and 19 minutes? I can't actually listen to this album to judge it in its entirety. Maybe if it was a quality album, but just from the time I listened, it felt outdated. Eh. Some of the beats were okay, but man was it repetitive. Good on the people who made it and got a Mercury Prize! But that doesn't necessarily translate to quality listening today. Clearly.
Outdated raver stuff from the 90's. This was hard to get into, the tempo was too fast and the samples outlived their usefulness and were way more repetitive than necessary. Was bothersome to listen to, I felt like I was on the It's a Small World ride at Disneyland or inside a microwave on a carousel that wouldn't stop.

I had already listened to this on a road trip in November based on it being part of jkav’s musical journey. Its looong and I don’t need to hear it again although I tried for about 10 minutes.
Although I could appreciate the quality of this album, no studio release should be over two hours long. I had to skip the final five tracks as it felt as though the same one was continuing indefinitely. This would get a 4 for the quality, but as a listenable album it just makes a 2.
I used to love drum and bass but never really saw the point in Dance Music that you don’t dance to. This album bridges the gap somewhat with more hip hop influenced vocals, jazzy double bass and skittery live drums. I mostly enjoyed the half time triphop stuff like Watching Windows. It didn’t get nearly as much acclaim but Roni Size and DJ Die worked together again a few years later on Breakbeat Era, which I think really nails this style of more “listenable” D&B.

Oh, that nineties sound! Generally speaking, I like that type of music, but I do think there are better choices when it comes to the genre and the period (say, Fat Boy Slim?). Regardless, I could do with worse background music, I guess.

It's a no from me. So long... Some nice beats, but I didn't enjoy this album.
D&B isn't really my style of music, so I wouldn't have listened to this on my own. It was mostly not unpleasant and totally fine in the background, so I guess it was a good experience to expand my general music knowledge. That said, it was never much more than "not unpleasant" and there were a couple of unpleasant parts or tracks, especially on the first disc. Speaking of multiple discs, this album was definitely also way too long. I'm pretty surprised at myself that I finished it, I wasn't expecting to when I started listening to it. Some of the individual tracks were too long considering how repetitive they were and the album quality would certainly be higher by just cutting some of the less interesting tracks.
I went into "New Forms" fully expecting not to like it. Goldie's oh-so-ironically named "Timeless" had done nothing for me a few months back, and drum n' bass is really not my jam. But to give it a little credit, once I tried to zone out from the interminable length, it seemed there would be enough to like in "New Forms". "Brown Paper Bag", the most famous track, boasts an addictive fretless bass refrain and a frenetic beat. It's a freak-out, a riot, and it's fun. The same bass crops up in various tracks across the record and gives a unique, fluid kind of texture. But outside of that, there was a lot of repetition in the first disc alone. "Matter of Fact" is totally needless noodling around with sound effects, different synth lines over a stuttering fractured beat. "Morse Code" and "Destination" were more of the same- I wanted to like them but I just wasn't picking up on many intricacies or shape to them. I couldn't escape the nagging feeling that it was all a waste of time. I struggled my way to the end of the album listed on Spotify, realised it was only part 1 and there was another hour to go, and then put off going near the rest of it for several months. By the time I eventually got through the whole thing (23 tracks, 2 hours 20 minutes!) it hadn't changed my mind on the genre. It's marginally better than some of the other drum and bass albums I've heard (I liked a lot of the instrumentation and the vocal features) but it torpedoes itself with its length. I can't go too in-depth because I'd have to put myself through it all again and I'm going to have to go with my first impression. Some of the individual tracks may have been far better in a shorter album, but as it is I'm unlikely to ever listen to the whole thing again. That makes a one star in my book. I'd go back to: "Brown Paper Bag", "Heroes", "Watching Windows", "Electricks".
I'd have liked this in 1997 but I never bothered with it. Much of it made me feel anxious today. Too much clubbing in 1997.
This album feels so ahead of its time I feel like I heard one or two songs that sound a lot like modern dubstep, while the rest sounded like modern drum and bass. I guess the lesson that I learned is that these specific EDM subgenres are actually older than I realized. This album was fairly standard as far as drum and bass goes, but I really like drum and bass, so this album was enjoyable for me.,
I will confess I didn't get through the whole album, but with about half I think I heard enough to rate. I haven't had a lot of exposure to drum and bass so it was nice to be able to check some out. It was entirely inoffensive but didn't do that much for me and wasn't really very interesting to actively listen to.

Epitomises a genre I love and that was uniquely British in its inception despite obvious influences from hip-hop, jazz etc.
I am extremely surprised to see a DnB/Jungle album on here. The sound is a little dated now but I still love it. I’m probably eating this higher than normal since I love DnB

Jiggly but it's all on cruise control. Choose one for a short journey or both for the longer trips.
I really don't listen to this type of music. Said another way, I really don't take these kinds of drugs anymore but this album was very pleasant to have on as background while working.

Is this what they meant by repetitive beats? It's ok but long-winded. At least Jazz and Prog kind go places. This just plays the same riffs over the same drum patterns without going anywhere
How can something be mysterious and devoid of character?
This was my first and last listen of this album. I listened to all 2+ hours of both discs. The 20th anniversary version on Spotify has additional content bringing the total time to over 5 hours. There's not enough MDMA in the world. I genuinely gave this a true listen through a good sound system and tried to keep an open mind throughout. I was in a state of discomfort by the time I was a few tracks in, but by the end I was internally screaming. I am clearly not the intended audience here, but wow I hated this. 0 stars.

Yes. I remember a couple of these tracks from release, and enjoyed at the time. Listening back now I'm pleasantly surprised at how cohesive, catchy and just plain good this album is. Gets five stars for freshness, even after 25 years.

Could have been a few hours shorter. I appreciate that not every genre can or should appeal to everyone. If it did, it would be so generic and lowest common denominator that everyone would rate it as 2 or 3 at most. While I'm sure this isn't a very popular album on this list, the idea that there are people out there, throwing down the 5-stars and rave reviews, to me, is a good thing. I'm glad you like it!
After 5 songs it all starts sounding the same.
The drum and bass feels pretty dated. But they do some interesting stuff with it.

Started listening to this while doing my taxes. I have to admit that I was occasionally bobbing my head while I was focused on entering 1099s into Turbotax... but that's about all this is good for. Background music while you do something else. Otherwise, it's boring and incessantly repetitive. Why are so many of these songs 7+ minutes?! Life is too short to spend your time listening to this album. Couldn't make it all the way through.

This is my 439th album and the first one I haven't finished. After 7.5 tracks, I know what they're going for. I don't need to listen to 14.5 more of the same thing. They broke my spirit. It's drum and bass with unimaginative lyrics and mediocre vocals. Best track: N/A

Fand ich 1997 langweiliger als heute, und ich mochte Drum'n'Bass damals sehr. Heute trotzdem spannender, was ja nichts schlechtes ist. Vom Hocker reisst es mich aber auch nicht.
Every song was easily a minute or two too long. I have a lot of drum n' bass, but the songs either need to ba shortened or another theme needs to be put in there. They were getting tedious. I appreciated him for what he was trying to do, but... man.
Amazing how certain places can spawn so much in a certain genre - another electronica group from Bristol. I didn't hate it. Well, at least the first 4 tracks, which had cool bass lines and beats (I really enjoyed Railing). But they did get a little too repetitive and monotonous for my liking (don't need 7min of the same bass line and drum beat). I couldn't stand Digital (9min of repetition and not even good beats) and that started a steady decline of electronic junk. So I guess I liked a third of the album. Maybe.
I remember this sounding like the future when it came out. It still sounds fresh, but time has tamed it. Runs out of steam and becomes irritating in places.

There is no universe or reality in which this is an essential album. It does nothing well and is not unique or memorable. 78 minutes of the same mediocre d&b beat over and over again.
Quite dated...excessive break beats, monotonous keyboards, boring vocals. This is interesting only as a representative of its period. I'm giving it two stars to be generous but it's really a 1.5
So 1001 provides multiple listings for hardcore and grunge, but only one for drum and bass - and this is it. I'm not an aficionada of D&B, but I'd say Roni is more melodic and less minimalist than most of what I've heard. The addition of Onallee on vocals is a big plus. Heroes and the other tracks she's involved in are standouts IMO. It would be nice to condense the best stuff down to a single LP.
Back in 97 this drum and bass album may have been very influential and innovative but 2 hrs of it, really? I could only listen to a few tracks before boredom set in.
For me New Forms by Roni Size is one of the best dance albums ever. I personally am a great fan of Drum and Bass and if you want to listen to one album of that genre, this is it.

Not really for me.
Musically this album is fine. You've gotta really love yourself some drum & bass to want this much of it. The beats are pretty repetitive and samey, if fast-shuffling and energetic. It would make for some decent workout music. I really liked "Hi-Potent," but most of the others kind of blur together. And yes, this album is overly long, so very, very long. I wonder when I see these long debut albums if the artist feared they would never get another album, so they throw in all the things. It rarely pans out and Roni Size really needed to pare this down. If the album were half this length, I might have given it a 3, but I don't really see myself revisiting this one at all. Fave Songs: Hi-Potent, Trust Me, Morse Code, Electricks, Paper Bag
Drum & Bass genre album that sounds very typical late 90s. The album is quite long and sounds somewhat experimental. Not really my thing. 4/10.
My complaint about this album mirrors my complaint about David Holmes' body of work; There is just nothing here that warrants a second listen. The album sounds fine and would work well in a movie soundtrack, but there are 1000 artists who do similar music and do it better,

Drums and bass for over an hour. This is some form of cruel torture.
In general, I find listening to double albums a chore, and this album is a good representation of that. I was ready to be done at the end of the first album, and then here is a full other album for me to listen to. I thought I was going to like this more. I'm a fan of DnB in general, and I remember listening to some of these songs when I was younger, but it didn't really do anything for me this time around. Part of the problem may be that I prefer more modern DnB, and this is pretty true to the roots of the genre 3/5

Hard to rate. Probably the best drum and bass album ever but it isn't a genre that suits albums. Brown Paper Bag is still amazing
i feel like this one suffers from the general musical malaise of the late 90s...but it's still interesting, in its way. it holds on hard to the old jungle beats - from back when that term wasn't as problematic as it is now - which i enjoy, since it's such an insect-in-amber thing. but overall, it's just not for me. didn't like it then, don't really care about it now.

I can appreciate that this was somewhat either ground-breaking or genre-defining, but DNB isn't really for me. And the vocals didn't make up for anything. A good album, well produced.
Cool techno lounge
Uh, okay. Don't hate. Don't like. It kinda sounds like my computer is skipping and that's not a comfortable sound.
Encyclopedic, a little repetitive (not within tracks but in the tracklist, too, and in neither place self-referential), long but driving toward its telos. That destination feels a bit hollow, but the music does not: Parts of it are positively live.
Fun intro to techno but not my favorite.
I'd give this album a 4-star rating if the songs were shorter. It's 139 minutes, over two hours of music, which is not necessarily bad, but this kind of compositions can get very repetitive very quickly, even though it's some pretty outstanding, classic drum'n'bass. "Lo bueno, si poco, mejor".

This is one that really shows the UK bias in this list. I don't think anyone (non-UK people, anyway) outside of drum and bass or DJ culture would consider this any kind of essential album - it's cultural relevance is pretty niche in the rest of the world - so I don't know how much it belongs here. That said, giving it a fair hearing, I didn't enjoy it too much. I could get into some of the beats but the overall style and production sounds very dated and I found most of the vocals kind of embarrassing.
I didn’t find this enjoyable, but I can recognize that it’s good. Because it wasn’t my thing I skipped through a lot of tracks after the first minute or so. I really thought I would enjoy some songs based off of their opening riffs, but found they were lacking.

interesting. album art screams 1997 to me haha. its longggggg. first thought: radiohead music but some dude rapping on top instead of toms pitiful singing lol. it's been like 40 minutes and i've liked everything minus that first track. i dont have a lot to say i simply like this type of music. but it also wasnt the absolute best. just pretty cool.

Without a doubt it’s a classic of the genre however drum & bass is now considered quite niche and has stepped in and out of fashion since its late 90’s heyday. New Forms is up there with Timeless & Modus Operandi and is maybe a bit more accessible, Heroes & Watching Windows being big singles. It’s the likes of Brown Paper Bag, Hot Stuff & Down where the surgically produced bass come to the fore. Hadn’t listened to this in a while and to be honest picked out a few tracks for the review. Still stands up!

Erg oldschool drum&bass. Dit is niet hetzelfde op album als in een zaal of op een festival. Nu werd het al snel wat langdradig en zeer veel van het zelfde.
It's between a 4 and 5 for me and it's such and inspiring album for me. But i'm going with a 4 because I know that there are albums that have influenced me even more than this. Buuuuut it is amazing and on top of it I can hear how a lot of of stuff is made and even had (and still have) some of the same vintage synths and samplers that it sounds like have been used on it - which adds to it for me.

Seminal, timeless, silky smooth d&b bangers. A few of the tracks did feel a bit samey
Was a really tough call between a 4 and a 5. On the one hand it’s a seminal album that has influenced a lot of the music that I like nowadays, with some classic d&b tracks in there. On the other, I felt it dragged a bit and some of the tracks went by without really making an impact. I’m also not sure I’d listen to this as a full album all that regularly, which should rule it out as a 5. But it’s difficult to ignore it’s legacy and influence. This is the most torn I’ve been about my scoring of an album yet.

Super new millennium vibes, those drums were amazing
Very rare for an electronic/dance music album to win the Mercury Music Prize but it is completely unprecedented for a drum and bass album. I'd be surprised if it will ever happen again. This is one of the albums that put drum & bass on the mainstream music map. It's a wicked album, super pioneering, blending lots of different influences, particularly jazz and hiphop. You've also got to factor in the timing of it, artist-led d&b albums were not common in 1997. And it still sounds fresh! "In The Mode" might edge "New Forms" for tunage, but it is nowhere near as groundbreaking or influential. 10/10
A classic. This album was one of the first DnB albums I heard and definitely helped send me down the path.
Was between a 3 and a 4 but have rounded up for the Ket song, which I’ll now be sneaking into playlists at appropriate times 😏 a classic album which has grown on me over the years
this has some interesting ideas but it's grating more often than it grooves, and it's honestly pretty audacious to make a 2 hour 20 minute album with such little variety throughout. 3/10

Like this, much stronger at the start than the end where it gets a bit non descript. Nice nostalgia
3/10. Much too long to listen to this whole album. The music itself wasn't terrible, but was a bit too frantic to be great background music, and a bit to samey to listen to actively.
Drum&Bass simple "New Forms"

Album très intéressant. Drum and bass, rap, RnB, tout y est.
I love electronic music in general, and Aphex Twin, Squarpusher, and Autechre in particular. That said, I found this album to be boring.
Liking this a song in - sample based? Sounds like it could be contemporary. Defies genre a bit, which I appreciate. 2hrs 20 minutes? Good Lord. Meant for hookah bars and Amsterdam coffee shops with that kind of length. Halfway through getting a better sense of the "genre." This is what 2am feels like when you're trying to rally but you know you're too damn tired. The first two tracks were great, the other 21 left me wanting.

I gave this more of a fair shot than I might have otherwise because I have a good friend named Roni. I still dislike drum and bass, but this band does it real well
Familiar with the full vocal remix of Brown Paper Bag from an MTV comp called AMP2. Fondly remember watching AMP late at night and am generally a fan of this era of electronic music. 1 cd alone can hold an indulgent amount of music in 70+ mins but a double cd is alot to take in. Had to listen in two separate sessions. Though drum n bass is very "meaty" as far as electronic music goes, the higher BPMs over the course of a double cd can be exhausting if you're not on drugs. Like the upright bass sound. I think I prefer the 2nd disc from "Intro" on. Its more instrumental/atmospheric and has a wider range of moods.
When the drums started I was like "alright this is not bad." Hip hop but sorta jungle electronica-ish? Not bad to have on in the background while working (which I am doing now). I like New Forms... uh huh, uh huh, uh huh. Reminds me a bit of DJ Shadow, there's a darkness here that I like. Oh shit this is the 2hr album. I did enjoy it, but Jungle/DnB is very draining lol, but I was working and trying to stay awake so it worked well. 3.5 up to 4.

JUNGLE IS MASSIVE. Excellent former dnb producer that managed to shapeshift the sound in the 90s with legendary producer like Goldie.
Some funky, cool sounds, but I can't listen to two hours of this.
Der 2. Song ist zu lang. Der 3. Song ist zu lang. Die Synthezizer-Figur im 6. Song nervt kolossal, nach ihrer Ausblendung wird er aber auch kaum erträglicher. Ich habe nach dem 7. Song aufgegeben. Drum 'n bass ist irgendwie doch auch immer nur dasselbe: irgendwo rasselt eine snare, kick, hi-hat oder alles zusammen und das war‘s dann.

More scungy UK electronic shit... guess this is my punishment for complaining about it yesterday? And this time an hour and 20 minutes! About halfway in now and it all sounds exactly the same... ugh, fuck this. 2/5.
