Reviews (page 11 of 14)

I mean there are some classics on this, and very nostalgic, but by the end I felt like it was all a bit repetitive funk!

Here we go again. More slappin' the bass and quickly saying 'hoot, hee, hat, badababa heet har' then doing some slow singing then slappin' the bass again. Guess it's okay though.

It is certainty way better than any of there (more successful) albums that followed. But I find the horror of the albums that followed (and much of the garbage that precedes this) can taint the memory of perfectly listenable funk-rock album. "mellowship Slinky in B Major" or "suck my kiss" are probably the best examples of the agreeable funky nonsense on offer.

I loved this album back in the day, but it feels a bit immature and dated to this fortysomething dad now. Still, "Under the Bridge" and "Give it Away" hold up fairly well. God help him, Anthony Kiedis really could have benefited from autotune :)

it was nostalgic, for some of the wrong reasons. does listening to the acoustic version of the album count?

There’s some classic RHCP tunes on this one. The record starts off great with the power of equality down to suck my kiss supply the energy with the whole band in their prime funky state.

Весь альбом скучно слушать. Есть хиты, благодаря которым можно простить всякую вату между ними.

Rhcp was interesting..... Would give it at least a three

Okay, I've liked some pieces, but less than a half :/

3.3 + Back during the Napster days, I downloaded like 3 tracks off this album and didn’t bother to listen to the rest until I found the CD a few years later in some cut-up bin. It’s overlong like so many albums of this peak CD era. The interplay between Frusciante and Flea is exceptional but Kiedis often tanks the sound with his pseudo-intellectual musings and psycho-sexual babble (“Yama daba girl from Alabama…”). To give credit where it’s due, “Under the Bridge”, “Breaking the Girl” have remained among my favorite songs of the 1990s - they are both cinematic and build to dramatic crescendos. “Give it Away” is funky AF. Those would’ve been the songs in my original mp3 stash and 25 years later I stick by that assessment.

I do want to like RHCP, but just can't seem to get into them. Flea and Chad Smith lay down a good groove, but the actual songs don't do that much for me. Maybe a few more listens are needed

Love under the bridge, some of their other stuff I couldn't really get into. It was my first time listening to a full album. I would say it is too long, despite the reasonable range of songs on there. Despite the occasional excellence, a lot of the funk stuff didn't do it for me, as well executed as it was.

RHCP is not my favorite, but they are consistent and they can be a lot of fun. I'm not a big fan of some of the vocal choices that Anthony Kiedis makes, but I can't deny the talent of the rhythm section of Flea and Chad Smith or the amazing guitar playing of John Frusciante. This album has some amazing songs, but I still prefer Californication to this.

Very well put together and produced. Very catchy songs and groovy music

Okay... Funky Bass mixed with brutal rhythmic and vocal styles of funk and rap music with the brutal guitar-driven style of heavy-metal. (6/10) Favorite Tracks: Funky Monks, I Could Have Lied, Under the Bridge

its okay

Good not great

This cd is long and I can see why my mother banned it from the car. Two songs made me laugh out loud literally, some obvious classics from my youth, and a lot of songs I’ll never listen to again. Not my fave but I feel compelled to respect this ridiculous band because of my childhood. But not TOO much respect.

Could use some trimming.

The high water mark for RHCP. The single's from this are all good to great. Some decent deep cuts, but a lot of this album sounds dated now, and dropping the last 6 songs would have resulted in a tighter, better record. Highlights: Breaking the Girl, Suck My Kiss, Give It Away, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Under the Bridge

The best Rhcp album but I don’t vibe with 100% of the tracks

Really in yo face with some bangers sprinkled in

Really not my cup of tea at all. I just can’t get into the Peppers. Can see why people do like it, but just ain’t for me.

Not my favorite Chili Peppers album, but a classic.

voice was pretty low

Funky, fresh, but also super long, could have been edited down tighter. I like this more than most later Chili Peppers albums because it displays a sense of fun that disappeared over the decade.

Fun, different, nostalgic, great instrumentals, 80s vibes, funky vibes, good album but I can't listen to the singer for a full album.

Its allright i think

Meh. OK, but I like their earlier albums better.

honestly just fine they really thought they did something with power of equality idk the angle of their jaws is making me uncomfortable i need a nap i’ll be honest, i am not understanding a word no cause the potential this album has for my ‘on a date with rodrick heffley’ playlist one minute red hot chili peppers make a song under 4 minutes challenge

More funky than I remember.

A good album, with some great tracks, but a little long and repetitive.

Mostly enjoyable, I like the style of music, although the album is way too long... They really could have cut it down to half the length. The production irritated me for some reason: the audio quality seems poor and I don't like the mix. Some of the lyrics are a bit much too, sir pyscho sexy was the worst example of this

Very good

I'm not the biggest fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but this album was diverse in style and still unifying in sound. I enjoyed a couple of the songs and already knew a couple

Give it away now was my favourite song in it. That's all I am saying.

Ja, dit was voor mij destijds wel echt een vernieuwing. Het bandje heb ik dan ook "grijs-gedraaid". Nu weer heel fijn om eens te luisteren, wist alleen niet dat het album zooo lang duurde

I had this album back in the day. I haven't listened to it in years. It's really pretty good. A bit long, but some really good songs.

BSSM by RHCP- I stopped listening halfway through, as the heat death of the universe occurred. This is one of those albums that I think are without any deep cuts, but I’m fine without actually listening to the entire thing to find out. _Breaking the Girl_ is my favorite on this album

"Twisting and turning Your feelings are burning You're breaking the girl (She meant you no harm)" (Breaking the girl) "K-i-s-s-i-n-g Chicka chicka dee Do me like a banshee" (Suck my kiss) Cómo puede ser tan aburrido el disco con una portada de una gente con lenguas de tatuajes tribales dosmileros, no me lo explico. Menos mal que tiene "Give it away" y "Under the bridge".

Bangers'n'cheese. Too long really - trim off the second half of the album and you'd have a classic.

FINALLY AN ALBUM ABOUT SO CAL. This album is too long by half, but I still love some of the hits (Under the Bridge, etc). Weird Al's versions are better though. YOU HEARD IT HERE.

Great bass. Great guitar. RATM vibez at times. The guitar riffs really make the album though. Idk what pedals they're using but it's FUN.

few good songs i'd go to a concert but this one album aint super amazing

It's decent funky rock. I didn't love it, I didn't hate it. Probably not coming back to listen to it again.

This is a long record. Fun to revisit. But... it's a long record. Cut 3-4 tracks and it'd get a fourth star.

War scho in anderer Liste - 3

Too long and gets a little samey but I like the general sound and funk. 7/10

Un disco largo y a ratos repetitivo pero con un energía impresionante. El epítome del sonido de los RHCP antes del cambio del Californication. Un gran disco aunque a ratos cansa. Songs: Under the bridge, Give it away

I enjoy the RHCP, but I am not sure what they are doing on this list. I lost track of how many times the lyric "suck my dick" was sung.

giveitawaygiveitawaygiveitawaynow

Classique

It's overly long but the singles are masterpieces.

Not my favorite RHCP album. They’re clearly talented, but really hit their stride after californication.

Meh. Some catchy songs, but some annoying ones. His voice is kind of annoying too.

I didn’t mind it😎

Wasn't a big fan, just not enough melody and song structure

Rocket som kun red hot kan være det, lidt råt, men et par gode bangers

åbuu dette var kjedelig - mest usexy musikken om sex ever

Flea really outperforms the rest of the band here, why is a professional jamming out with some high school band? I don't really hear the Metal in Funk Metal here. The album is unnecessarily long as well, victim of the CD era. The hits are ok and some deepcuts are alright and a lot of it is ranging from fine to mediocre. Sounds like I hate it, but it wasn't all that bad.

My first introduction to RHCP was through a kid at a summer camp in the early 2010s who was obsessed with them. Now that I’ve listened to both of their albums on this list, I’d like to say that Keenan, if you’re reading this, I hope your music taste improved a little

I know this is good, but I hate the band so much it clouds my judgement. Good points - great production, superb musicianship. Bad points - collectively I find them insufferable. Objectively it’s a 4, but for me it’s a 2.

I’ll say 2.5

The happiest I was listening to this album was realizing that I've already gotten through this list's two Red Hot Chili Pepper albums, which means I will never have another morning ruined by Anthony Kiedis (unless I end up going to a CVS for condoms and hearing "Can't Stop.") I don't need my rock musicians to be upstanding people, but I would prefer if they made music t hat wasn't a fucking slog. Two discs of dumb-fuck scat singing and less dumb-fuck bass thwacking. Would've been a one, but the acoustic songs were cute enough.

Thoughts while listening to this. - Oh cool. I remember when this came out. - Wow, these songs aren't that great. - Give it away now. - This is pretty bad actually. - Under the bridge - Man, I kinda hate Anthony Kiedis now.

With Flea slapping the bass like no other and John Frusciante playing some funky guitar riffs, RHCP could be a decent band if they hurled Anthony Kiedis into the sun. Partially due to all the heinous stuff he has done over the years, but also for being a bad frontman. His lyrics are juvenile and his scatty rap-like delivery of them distract from a lot of the excellent playing of his band mates. This could have been a solid 3 if they didn't bloat this thing with so many throwaway songs. Most of them are inoffensive enough, but "If You Have To Ask" is the worst of the bunch. The song sounds vaguely like Parliament and Funkadelic if they were awful. Both "Give It Away" and "Under The Bridge" are excellent songs, they aren't worth sitting through the 70+ minutes you need to put aside to finish this album.

Albeit their later stuff, I was completely swept up by RHCP as a kid. Them more than anyone else I used to like, I find almost completely insufferable now. RYM: N Saved a song: N

No what the fuck are these guys on about

really cringe and bad but sometimes fun!!

every song feels like it’s 8 minutes long. god this thing is huge. “Under the Bridge” is a great song unfortunately

The instrumentation is great, stuffed to the brim with groove and funk. There is so much talent on display. But jfc do Kiedis' lyrics and vocal stylings get on my nerves. Unfortunately Flea, Frusciante, and Smith's mastery can't quite save this one from 74 minutes of Kiedis rapping about all the sex he has. At least this one doesn't feature a song about a 14 year old girl. 2.5/5. Favorite tracks: The Power of Equality, If You Have to Ask, Sir Psycho Sexy (for going full sludge mode)

Great band, terrible songwriters. I got this album when it came out for Breaking the Girl, and proceeded to hate pretty much the rest of the album. I wondered what it would be like to listen to this now that I have a better ear for rap music. Nope. This album still mostly sucks. The songs sound like the ramblings of a bunch of bored seventh graders in study hall. Too bad these guys never grew up and wrote better songs (Dark Necessities notwithstanding). When a Stevie Wonder cover is one of your best songs, and you’re not a local bar band, it makes it hard to justify this band’s existence.

feels like it's stuck in time of a 13 year old edge fase

3 killer songs on an album of 17 tracks just doesn’t cut it. Breaking The Girl, Give it Away and Under the bridge are indisputably great songs but the rest is filler, they all sound like rehearsal room, sex funk jams rather than complete songs. 2.2

not my tipe, es un rock 2/5

Imagine being an adult and writing a song called Suck My Kiss and being a separate adult thinking that's a good song. And then imagine hearing middling rock for almost the running time of a feature length film

Klassisk RHCP, funky rock, är meh för mig.

The instrumentals are great, which is the only thing keeping this from being a 1

A longer album with some notable hits. Consistent sound through and some nice bass licks

classic rock, little bit of experimentation stuff, not really my style

Hm ist ok

I rounded up the last RHCP album. This one will not be so lucky. Never listened to much of these guys besides the hits, and I wouldn’t call them one tricky ponies, but the songs really do run together. I think that’s due to the singer. This is way too long and I hate their rap-leaning songs. 2.5

Didn’t like

oh my god it's so long give it away is different lmao feeling 3/5

I like the odd song and the sound is cool, but in general feels a bit samey and the lyrics uninspiring

gotta say this is not a record for a calm morning

I like the hits but could leave the rest. I feel the same way for almost all RHCP albums.

Not for me.

Under the bridge is a great track. The rest of the album I would leave though.

Eu odeio o Anthony Kiedis e o pior é que já disseram, com razão, que eu me pareço um pouco com ele. Os outros rapazes são ótimos.

When I was growing up I listened to this tape so much that it broke and I had to buy it again. If I was going to review this on nostalgia it would more than likely have been a 5 star, but knowing what kind of a sex creep Anthony Kiedis is. The bangers from the album are still bangers but the songs that are about women or sex take on a whole new meaning now that we know Anthony Kiedis is a pedophile. And that alone takes is down to 2 stars.

I’m trying to think of another band that’s this good and makes music this bad. They’ll sound so unbelievably locked in and then Anthony will come humping in like an 11yo who just drank too much juice.

5 great songs, 12 skips.

There’s the occasional moment of suspension where you can ignore the vocals and notice some wonderful, sophisticated playing by Flea, Frusciante and Smith. That’s the ONLY reason this doesn’t get one star. It’s quite frustrating…I always wonder what could’ve been if these great musicians had gotten a better lead singer.

Don't get them at all.

RHCP have never done it for me. Music for the most annoying guy in your high school who thinks he's deep and misunderstood, but really everyone hates him for dating a freshman as a senior.

I really like the Frusciante guitar on here and the actual instrumentals are awesome, I even dig the (debated) slap bass. It's got a form factor to it and its immediately recognizable. That said, I think I hate the lyrics on every song & my opinion on Kiedis pinballs from one song to the next. The Frusciante solo albums are dope though. Would probably like this more if it were a few songs shorter, 70+ minutes is too long to spend with Kiedis. Favorite Songs: Under the Bridge, I Could Have Lied, Naked in the Rain, Funky Monks

Yeah funky funky RHCP doesnt do a lot for me unfortunately

made me really angry cause it sounds great but it’s ruined by anthony kuedis’s trash lyrics ‘I’d steal anything that you want me to K I S S I N G chicka-chicka Dee, do me like a banshee Low brow is how Swimming in the sound of ‘bow-wow-wow’ stfu

Si es que instrumentalmente no está mal, pero es que la parte vocal me da aún más lache que Bono. No puc.

boring. nothing sticks out. literally tuned it out bc it was so boring.

No (first listen, made it half way through) Second listen (since *some* people were mad I didn’t like it the first time): Power of equality sounds like the boy band from lemonade mouth just a little Redeeming songs: I could have lied, under the bridge, sir psycho sexy (very funk-y and that last bit where he’s not singing is so so good) Overall still a 2 but those final minutes of sir psycho sexy almost brought it up to a 3. I do appreciate the funk of it all but I don’t think I’ll be revisiting anytime soon

Just too horny for me.

Oh dammit. I used to own this album, really outgrew this band. I do have some fun memories pinned here, but blegh, Anthony Kedis really doesn't do these guys any favors. Nope, not a fan at all.

Instrumentals were fine, but the vocals were shockingly bad. The last track "They're Red Hot" is especially horrendous. My favorite RHCP track "Under the Bridge" is from this album, so I expected it to at least be decent, but I was wrong.

I must admit that i am a Chili Peppers Hater from way back. I also had to admit to never having listened to this entire album. Under the Bridge and Breaking the Girl were just awful songs. But giving them a fair shake I have to admit that this is not the worst band nor the worst album ever. There are 4 or 5 truly original well done songs here (of course there are 17 songs on the album so a blind squirrel am I right?). That being said I cannot give them the 1 I was sure they richly deserved. I can't get them to a 3 either just because 5 out of 17 is not a 3 in my book. A high 2 is all I can fairly muster here. But good on you, you forced me to actually listen to an album I would have bet yesterday I would die without playing. :)

Has two good songs in it with a whole bunch of garbage surrounding them. 2.5/5 at best.

Seems like a terrible mix? One very strong and beautiful song, rest kinda meh. Felt like you could really tell the vocal limitations this band always grapples with.

Rating: 4/10 You know, it's really not that bad but even the 'best' of the chili peppers is really just on the edge of tolerable. In the case of this album, you can absolutely claim that this is a talented group of musicians making shitty music that sometimes turns out ok. I don't care for the funk rock and rap rock sound that they make, and Kiedis's vocals and lyrics are so annoyingly shit to me, sometimes ruining the songs for me entirely on their own. The best part of the album is the run of Give it Away-title track with its guitar work-Under the Bridge, pretty solid. As far as I'm concerned everything after that stretch could have been cut up until Sir Psycho Sexy, with a good outro that of course gets ruined by the inclusion of that last song.

The hits were decent, the rest of the 1hr14min album was offensively annoying. Pretty shallow, while also jumpy and hyper. ADHD in musical form, in a bad way 4.3/10

Nothing that special,. Liked a couple of songs.

Idk didn't really like it. Felt a bit too "I listen to this and therefore I'm cool"

Well one thing is for sure, no one can accuse Anthony Kiedis of being a great lyricist. He's made damn sure of that.

I feel like this is something Reese from Malcolm in the middle would listen to.

Way too long and just ok overall

Yeah its good but not for me...

could listen to Under the Bridge all day but would skip the rest

Anthony Kiedis found dead under the bridge. 2.3/5

These guys are obviously fantastic musicians. And I'm going to sound like my grade four teacher here... but this is why this album is so disappointing. They just didn't work hard enough to reach their full potential. One perfect song (Under the Bridge, or as I call it 'how to compress a strat to the point that you can hear the individual atoms in the strings), a few OK songs (Give it Away), and a lot of boring dreck in-between. Oddly, of the filler tracks, Sir Psycho Sexy was the most interesting song (musically) if one ignores the lyrics. Also, my wife noted that the lyrics to the title track made her vagina as dry as the Sahara. One other point. Why the hell are the snare hits so forward in the mix? They were like ice-pick hits that just annoyed the hell out of me.

I only know "Under the Bridge" as of now, and let's just say I'm not excited to hear "Suck My Kiss" based on the way people talk about it. It's the upcoming song and so far I don't hate this album. It's eh. I've always had a bit of a problem with the vocals in their songs. Okay, it's not the worst song ever. It's just like the rest of this album. So eh. I don't really like the funk element honestly. My little white ass is tickled pink Cock my brain to shoot my load Global abortion please She must be moist "I'm in love with the wilderness", Lottie Matthews at some point probably My dick got hard She liked the looks of me and my willy My hard-on bleeding (I can lend you a tampon for that, man) There's a devil in my dick and some demons in my semen Creamy beaver (just say wet pussy at this point; it's not making me cringe as much) Ooo that's tight Turned a cherry pie right into jam (that poor woman's clit) In your pussy I'd kill Put your kidneys to sleep And for my new favorite poem: "Twinkle twinkle little star Shining down on my blue car Driving down the boulevard She was soft and I was hard" Guys, as a woman I can assure you that talking so much about how hard your dick is will totally get you that woman (to call the police).

4 stars for Under the bridge, minus 2 stars for the rest of the album.

Whenever I listen to RHCP at the start I'm like "oh, this is better than I remembered/thought" and then the singer starts singing and I can bear it no longer. This could've been an amazing instrumental band, man.

Good stuff but bloated as hell

Not for me, never particularly like the RHCP and this went on for far too long and ended upnfeeling like background noise not the focus of my attention. 2 cos I Under the Bridge is a cool tune.

Greatest musicians you know make slime slime music (derogatory)

It is giving variations on a theme. Favourite track: Under the Bridge

Never been a huge RHCP fan. Most of their stuff sounds the same to me, the singer yelps like a dog whose tail has been stepped on. Californication is clearly the better album. There are some good songs here, but the album is way to long overall. Although I enjoyed some songs, most of them didn't appeal to me, and I couldn't find any interesting lyrics.

I was never a fan of RHCP, listening to an entire album doesn't change that. As talented as (at least some of) the band may be, the songs don't really catch my attention. A few titles (the obvious hits, I guess) may be fun pop rock tracks, but overall it's just okay.

A band I’ve never liked. Funk rock, Kiedis’ rapping style singing (or actually any of his singing),too American. And pretty terrible tunes, Suck My Kiss as an example is awful. A 2 all day long and that’s only because Give It Away is ok. Don’t trust a RHCP fan. Last words to Nick Cave- ‘I’m forever near a stereo saying, ‘What the fuck is this garbage?’ And the answer is always the Red Hot Chili Peppers’.

Like Under the Bridge quite a bit but the rest is just, like not really my thing man.

This is a difficult album for me to review because even though I don’t actually dislike the album, unsurprisingly at 79 minutes long, I have always found it a mammoth of a task to get through with an entire album’s worth of RHCP style filler tracks before we reach the Hendrix cover which closes it out. For that reason alone I can’t justify anything better than a two star review. It’s not captivating or consistent enough to score more, though a well edited 50 minute album would admittedly be a solid 3 pushing a 4. If I still owned this album, I’d give it away, give it away, give it away now.

Dude, after listening to that I get the sense that someone sat them down and literally said, cut the shit

For every song I like there are 4 or 5 I don't like at all. 2 stars or D+.

Rock, Rap, 1991 -> 2

RHCP are the greatest trio in rock history.

It was hard for me to listen to every song. I’m just not into it at this point in my life. Def a couple good sing-alongs. Under the Bridge and Breaking the Girl are great songs

Was quite keen to hear this again but honestly, don't much like it. And it goes on and on. 74 minutes of wacky, staccato nonsense, with a couple of transcendent high points. Thank goodness that's the capacity limit for CD as a format or they might still be bouncing, spanking, and gurning away at it even now 😅

Call me basic but I prefer RHCP’s more mainstream albums

Don’t like this 2

It’s sort of a miracle that the music can occasionally rise above Anthony Kiedis’s terrible vocal performances. He really is awful and drags every song down. Under the Bridge really is the standout and the only song on here that doesn’t have something embarrassing happen with his fuckass voice.

this jus sauceless nu metal, get this bullshit away from me

So overplayed … outgrown this band

idk im not a big RHCP fan. I like their popular songs and can see why those are the only popular songs.

Mid everything but bass

2/5 Energetic throughout but man is there a lot of uselessness on here.

1: Under the Bridge 2: If You Have to Ask 3: Give It Away

It was an important and nostalgic album growing up, but there is so much filler on it

Some great stuff on this collection, particularly Under the Bridge and Give It Away So its a shame I have never really enjoyed the bass-forward funky sound or the vocal delivery style

probably closer to a three and i'm definitely biased here by already not really liking rchp... album starts off real rough and i cringed at some of the songwriting throughout. kept thinking about how the rhcp frontman is ostensibly tone deaf and also that tumblr post that's like "why you hating on the red hot chili peppers man?" "although i disagree with your music taste i must applaud you for your ability to type this while skateboarding through campus"

Nah. Not for me. Noen godlåter trekker opp.

Not a fan of em. Heard em to much

This is how I remember RHCP

Only a couple of songs worth caring about.

Disappointed because I love other RHCP albums but this one wasn’t for me. The rap was cringe.

I had this album when I was a kid and thought I would enjoy it more than I did. In reality, the lyrics mostly range from weak to mildly cretinous, the vocals can be grating and the whole album is overlong.

Nice instruments, in particular the bass, shame about the vocals and lyrics.

I listened to all of it. A bunch of it was just noise. One banger

Trash apart from the bangers

As per usual, a good set of songs mixed within a whole lot of filler. Do these guys have an album that isn't like 40 minutes too long? Flea and Rick Rubin are probably the best two parts of the record for me.

Funk-rock doesn’t do it for me. The vocals were super cringy. Some of the Flea bass lines were cool but the overall instrumental feels like watered down funk with really heavy-handed drums and guitar, mostly makes me want to listen to the real stuff.

I thought this would be a 3, but its less fulfilling than that and it's in the process of being inconsequential. In 10 years noone will listen to this.

I’m just not a chili peppers kind of girl. I do not fuck with the vibe they’re putting out. That being said I have a soft spot for flea for some reason? Liked their hits in middle school, so there’s a nostalgia factor, but it’s just not for me. -Ruby Anthony Kiedis is one of the most obnoxious vocalists in rock history. White boy P-Funk can have its moments but this record is mostly too silly enjoy.

Pretty stupid

This album was not good enough to be this long - started out okay, and only went downhill. By the time I got to Sir Psycho Sexy, I was completely over it. The only thing saving me from giving this album a 1 is Under the Bridge and the mildly interesting instrumentation. I can’t believe I was excited for this album, what a disappointment! Listening to this album is what it feels like to interact with most men my age.

This has all of the worst parts about the RHCP amplified to 11. There are songs in here that are so good, ruined by weird shit that is so bad. Best Song: Under the Bridge Rating: 4/10 Stars: 2

I used to like this, but I grew over it, and Anton's lyrics and singing are as nails in a chalkboard now.

muito barulho na minha cabeça não é muito do meu gosto

Biggest issue with this album is how long it is, if they ended it with Under the Bridge, I would have actually quite enjoyed it! Sir Psycho Sexy can fuck off though - that and the 1+ hr running time makes this a 2 for me. I did also enjoy Breaking the Girl, Give It Away, and the title track; and the bass from Flea is pretty sick throughout. Wouldn't want to listen through the whole thing again, though.

some decent singles on here but my god why is this an hour and 15 minutes

Apart from the 2 songs that made it out of 1991 this album is trash

what the heck is this album cover. This album is a long ride and found it uninteresting!

This sounds like a parody of rock music an Evangelical moral crusader would find and make a huge culture war issue

interesting album title lol 5 songs in.. and i want an album by women.. please be one next 19 songs on one album is too many horny guys with instruments. it's not the type of music i would be throwing on personally. I don't really like the cadence the lead singer uses. Choppy sing-talking is not pleasant to me. I like the instrumentals on song of the songs.

Probably the only album I consider tolerable by RHCP.

Meh weet niet wat ik verwachte maar dit was m niet

Not my 90s jams

Huge gap between the best RHCP songs and the worst. Huge. I'd really rather not deal with all the worst ones.

Pre-listen whining: Whyyyy is it so long why are all of these 90s albums so looooong why why why. Maybe CDs were a mistake Post-listen whining: I think I liked this more than ‘Californication’? This is long enough to repeat some ideas and I’m still really not crazy about the rapping, but the production is strong and I really dig Flea’s bass work and Chad Smith’s drumming. Guitar sounds good too. As a whole I understand the RHCP “thing” way better after this album than ‘Californication’. Elevated butt rock. I agree with streaming data: “Under the Bridge” is an obvious hit and the strongest thesis statement for the RHCP sound. The title track did elicit an “oh, yuck” from me.

the best album from a dogshit band

Angerrr

Terrible. Dunno how Antony keidis has made a career out of being a terrible singer with terrible lyrics. Everything starts OK then he starts singing. Stand out - breaking the girl, I could have lied

Music by that guy who doesn’t know how to keep his shirt on. I had a boss when I worked at Starbucks who was obsessed with RHCP. He put on album after album one shift and we teased him for it. He got so butthurt he said we could only play corporate approved playlists after that.

what the hell is this. ok funk rock can be cool but maybe this is also too hip hoppy? I dont like the vocals but the instrumental is good. I dont understand how some people call this red hot chilli pepper’s best album there are loads that are better (getaway, by the way.. etc) this definitely is very different to the rhcp albums i like

Lot of speak singing but the background bass/guitar/drums good. Not really the biggest fan of the vocals. Not for me.

rate: 2/10 fav song: castles made of sand (the only song i actually enjoyed) didn't really enjoy tbh! not my vibe and, potentially controversial, find his voice quite annoying oops. do quite like castles made of sand though!

Not great. A lot of tracks could have been left off in my opinion. 2.1/5.0

RHCP have some songs that I really like, but none of them are from this period. This album is the epitome of style over substance... they sound kind of cool, but the songs are just so dumb. I did not enjoy listening to this.

20 minutes of a good album and an hour of just grating nonsense.

The oversexualised lyrics come off crude and unpleasant. Prince somehow gets away with albums all about sex without sounding like a horny teenager. This just sounds like the work of horny teenagers for the most part, which might be why I quite liked it in my mid teens. Couldn't listen to the full 8 minutes of Sir Psycho Sexy. But listened to Under the Bridge twice to make up for it.

I don’t really know what to say, this was the first full red hot chili peppers album I’ve ever heard and it’s not something I expected but also not something unexpected either. pretty neutral about it, some songs were a bit more questionable than others, but maybe that’s their appeal anyways.

Listen, I know people like music like this. And it's not bad music generally. It is just not my music. This went way too long. Why was the second to last song 9 minutes? I started to lose my mind.

These guys are FUCKING lame. Everyday I thank god that this weird mix of grunge, hip hop and funk was short lived. The music is alright but I cannot get the image of absolute 90s clowns on the other side of the recording. It's genuinely upsetting that this was ever considered cool.

The opening track was so annoying it almost made me a conservative. I could barely turn much of this album up over a low volume because it was so annoying. Under the Bridge and Give it Away were good, and they’re obviously talented, but god please make it stop.

5/10 Favourite: The Power of Equality Least Favourite: Suck My Kiss

Few good song , otherwise boring and a mess

Bestes Lied: Apache Rose Peacock, Under the Bridge Lieder auf Playlist: 0

Apart from a couple of standout tracks this seems very forgettable

It's OK. Red Hot Chili Peppers' music is fine, but a bit gamey.

Ugh I tried to listen to this with an open mind, and there was a time when I liked this, but I think I’m way over RHCP. I tried to look up some criticism from the time and it was mostly good reviews, about their new and varied sound. It doesn’t get it past the point that this is nonsense bro funk rock.

RHCP is like goodish/okayish to me. Maybe because they're so popular I'm like ehh on them as a whole. 2.8 This probably got a 3.4

Oh fun. A RHCP album from when they were actually good. I’m using the word good liberally.

this album couldve been half the length and wouldve been 10 times better

I listened to RHCP for a while as a kid and teenager, but that time is gone. This is a good example of an album that is too long, and on top of that, uneven and toxic.

Such talented musicians and they let Anthony Keidis sing like an absolute dipshit and ruin this whole thing.

Woof, I was expecting better You can tell the band has some chops, but not a great listen at all.

Under the bridge - amazing The rest of the album - not it Sad bc I love a lot of their songs and other albums and I truely thought I’d love this

Every single song is the same. "Brap boo baa brap, bingy bangy bingo" Tedious then, tedious now.

Mærkelig blanding af ok numre og bras. I Could Have Lied sendte mig tilbage på efterskolen.

All pretension.

74 minutes is too long. Under The Bridge the only good song

Is there another band that has such highs and ridiculous lows than the Red Hot Chilli Peppers? Under The Bridge is such a tune, Give It Away isn’t bad either. The rest was slap bass garbage. Simpsons: Yes

Agree with Rozza's review. Under the Bridge is awesome. Give it Away is pretty good. I thought they would drag the album up to a 3... but by the time the album finished, absolutely not. Some really cringey songs on here.

The fun to dumb ratio is off with this one

Unimpressed by this. ⭐️⭐️

Its too long. Some great stuff but theres way too much filler

Lite för funkig för min smak, definitivt inte enkel att jobba till haha.

This album as a whole is pretty aggravating. I liked the vibe better when I was 20, but I think it has aged poorly and isn't really cool at all now. It's a long album filled with similar funky rock and a masterclass in Kiedis rapping. There are enough good parts to save it, but I really don't like this personally.

Vocals have never done it for me.

Not as bad as people make it out to be but I can take it or leave it.

decent album but holy hell it's so long and boring at times i just tune out

Very familiar with this album, know every track, but it's just not my cup of tea.

When I was 14 I thought these guys were cool. Now I’m 41 and think they pretty much suck. The singles are solid, “Under the Bridge” is still great. But the rest oscillates between totally forgettable and downright embarrassing. Anthony Kiedis may be the worst lyricist in rock history.

#762. Look, I know this probably deserves at least a three, but I've had a rough night, and I hate the fucking E̶a̶g̶l̶e̶s̶ Red Hot Chili Beppers, man. 2/5: please, spare me from this

‘Definitely a singles band’ - Luke

Literally only one good song

terrible

Kinda funky in a good way Although it does feel a little like men overcompensating for the fact that they can't pull

Even familiarity doesn't help this. I like their attempt at something funky and I get why a lot of my mates lived them but I can't buy in

Although I remember when this group was popular, I wasn't a fan, so I really never listened to any of their music until this album. After listening to this album, I'm still not a big fan, but I did like "Under The Bridge" which I thought was different than most of their songs, and more of a ballad than most of the other music this group produced.

This was a hard album to get through. I’m mot a fan of the peppers and when I saw how many tracks I let out a groan. It’s so funny cuz I can recognize the individual talent of all members, but put together it leads to results ranging from enjoyable to just kind of a funk-lite bore Standouts include breaking the girl(love that middle breakdown), I could have lied, and under the bridge (their biggest hit and can actually see why, Ive listened to it plenty of times) Everything else is just either annoying funk noises (give it away being the biggest offender) or just consistent 4-5 minute rock rap funk trials I’m just waiting to be over I did like “theyre red hot” as an ended, one of my fave Robert Johnson songs. But either way, not a fan and won’t be revisiting

I liked the more melodic tracks like "Breaking the Girl" and "Under the Bridge," but those felt unfortunately few and far between; maybe I haven't done enough drugs in my life, but the droning, monotonous, bored-sounding rap over funky bass lines did nothing for me. This album did manage to have some of the most blisteringly unsexy songs about sex, so I guess that's some kind of achievement. Best: "Under the Bridge" Worst: "Sir Psycho Sexy"

Ugh I usually enjoy the peppers (when I say this I mean I like their newest album and the hits) but this seems like it’s only the bad parts of whatever they put in all of their songs. I tried getting through this multiple times and Suck my kiss put me off every single time so it’s only so far I can go with this

Unlike other comments, I don’t think Frusciante or Smith are doing anything particularly special here. Both are undoubtly gifted, professional musicians, but what they do mostly serves as a tight but boilerplate backdrop for the songs. Aside from a few intriguing solos maybe (at the end of “I Could Have Lied” for example)… But what keeps this record from being a completely dull funk rip-off disaster is Kiedis’s idiosyncratic singing and the - undoubtedly - brilliant Flea. Of course, Kiedis lyrics are hit or miss (with far more miss than hit - just listen to „Suck My Kiss”, ouch), but at least his delivery is distinctive and charismatic. His full stylistic range - good and bad alike - is on display on “Mellowship Slinky in B Major”. I wouldn’t call anything on Blood Sugar Sex Magik (the Chili Peppers never fail to come up with stupid album titles) genius, or even particularly good, aside from Flea’s bass playing. However, with so many actually great funk (adjacent) records out there, there’s no compelling reason to ever sit through this one again.

Hated it. The funk and rap elements along with the lyricism are ridiculous. Understand The Bridge, Breaking The Girl, and I Could Have Lied are the only listenable songs

Went in with preconceptions. RHCP are a band I should love, in theory - I love so many of their influences: Gang of Four; James Brown; Iggy Pop/The Stooges. But they are so cringeworthy it hurts sometimes. Anthony Kiedis is a paedo.

RHCP is not my kind of rock in the slightest.

This is a long album at an hour and 14 minutes. Somehow it felt even longer than that. I don't like the Chilis, and listening to an entire album through didn't help that. A couple tracks were ok, but most of it I was just counting the seconds until it was over. 2/5

wow that was long

Well, I don’t have much to say about this. I guess if you’ve heard one song from this album you’ve heard them all.

The soundtrack to a Michael Bay porn flick.

Very samey, each song sounded like the previous one. Tough listen

"Ba-di ba-da ba-zumba crunga cong gone bad!" Chili Willy did not age well. I played in a white boy funk band in college in the late 80's so early Chili's were a big part of our set. It all sort of embarrasses me now.

RHCP is fine and the music is well done but I just don't enjoy their sound.

Early 90s rock. Made them famous. California skater rock. 90s.

I like the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Their song "Californication" is one of my favorite songs of all time. However, I didn't really feel connected to this album. It is not bad per se but I did feel it drag on and it just didn't have the same feel that I expected from them. This is an old album, maybe their music evolved as time went on. I am giving this a 2.

1991 RHCP have made one good album and this isn't it. The misogynistic overtone of the lyrics, and Kiedis generally being an unlikable individual make this an unrewarding listen. Musically, in places, there's a decent noise being made, if a bit over-produced, but overall it's a bit '90s teenage lad centric. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Noncy★★☆☆☆ (4/10)

They do some cool things with percussion but I absolutely despise their rancid vibes

Frusciante is the Jonny Greenwood of RHCP. A good musician in the midst of mediocrity.

Totally bloated. I can’t believe they recorded Soul to Squeeze during these sessions and decided to keep it off the record for all this other boring, generic white guy funk shit. I still love Breaking the Girl and Under the Bridge. Suck My Kiss has an amazing bass line but the lyrics are pretty gross. A decent chunk of songs could be cut off the record and you’d lose nothing. I’ve said it before: Anthony Kedis is so lucky he met Flea. But even the immaculate bass playing can’t save almost every song from turning into a snooze fest.

Maybe I don't like these guys as much as I thought I did. Californication, Scar Tissue, Can't Stop, Under the Bridge all fantastic songs, but that album came off as annoying if anything. The 6 minute sex song was not necessary. Under the Bridge is still great though.

I would assume that this was a hip-hop album cover were I a fool, though I fortunately know that Red Hot Chili Peppers are a rock band. Alternative I'm assuming, though I've never willingly listened to a single song of theirs. There's a decent chance I could like this, though that hour-ten runtime is giving me some bad juju. You never go for the hour-tenner. Some pretty interesting genres on this one. I guess I wasn't too far off in my hip-hop appraisal, and "funk rock"/"funk metal" are genres I can confidently say I've never heard of before. I'll just rip off the Band-Aid. This thing is way, way too long. Both in general runtime and individual track length. "Funky Monks" came as a particular surprise, as I checked my YouTube Music thinking I had accidentally repeated it only to realise that I still had a minute left of song to get through. The rocking atmosphere makes for an above-average listen, though much of this music winds up sounding the same - especially during the second half. I normally don't care for lyrics so long as the music is good, though I many of these lyrics also had me rolling my eyes. "Breaking the Girl" is a good tune. The vocals are pretty alright, and the acoustic guitar goes a long way in creating a vast, engaging atmosphere. "The Righteous & the Wicked" has a pretty sweet, silky smooth guitar riff in the middle of the track. The vocal style of "Give It Away" is interesting. I've heard that chorus emanating throughout other songs. Oh, hey. "Under The Bridge". I've heard this song a good number of times before - it used to be in me pappy's driving playlist. Good song. The way that the guitars transition and segue into one another is pretty great, and Kiedis' vocals mellow out into something much more palatable. The transition near the end of the song drives the piece to a solid finish, and I enjoy how his the vocals ride alongside the carefree instrumental. Book time. Genre-blending. Sold very well. Hmm. I'm checking Wikipedia. Stylistic shift for the band. Critical slam dunk. Credited with starting the alternative rock boom of the 90s. Okay, this album has definitely earned it's stripes. I cosign this inclusion.

I don’t love this album, but I don’t hate it. I’ll admit, it’s probably mostly because the singles are played out and everyone’s parents say this is the greatest thing to happen to music since the Beatles, but it’s ok.

That was mean of them to put two RHCP albums in a row. I disliked this album less than I disliked Californication, but I still disliked this album. If the other one is a low 2 star (2.1), this is a mid 2 star (2.6).

Why is it soooo loooong. There’s a couple of songs I enjoyed due to nostalgia, but the rest was a chore to get through. Tbh I feel like I would like this album more if it was instrumentals only

This is a very cohesive album both in style and title. It holds 2 of their better known songs "Give it Away" and "Under the Bridge". This album was okay. It just didn't spark joy.

Musically, this is excellent. Lyrically, it’s poor. It’s also far too long.

Edgelord fedora ahh album

A couple decent tracks, but this is a slog to get through.

My immediate response was to groan when I saw the band. But I did like them when I was younger and so I wanted to try and listen without finding them a bit lame/ annoying. The funk sound was a bit grating for me. I still love californication though.

A boring album that took effort to get through. They only have one sound and it gets old.

Really quite boring. That one track that was a hit stands out.

Some albums just stand the test of time, exposing new layers and depths when you listen at different stages of your own life. Fine wine classics. This is not one of them.

I have pretty much always disliked RHCP and I am sorry to say this album hasn't changed that. There was some good instrumentals here and there but even the best songs have the annoying singer. Whaddayagonnado?

Blood Sugar Sex Magik might have been groundbreaking at the time, but listening now it feels very dated. The mix of funk grooves, rap-style vocals, and rock riffs locks it firmly into the early 90s, and not always in a flattering way. Tracks like “Give It Away” and “Suck My Kiss” still have plenty of energy, but the juvenile lyrics and over-the-top delivery make them harder to take seriously today. There are a few moments that hold up better, like “Under the Bridge,” which shows a more vulnerable side of the band, but much of the album leans into a style that has not aged gracefully. The production is crisp, the musicianship is tight, yet the overall vibe feels stuck in its era. What once sounded fresh and rebellious now mostly comes across as a relic of its time.

Honourable mention for the album’s ability to instantly make everything a bit sleazier

I have never been a fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers so I hadn't listened to any songs not played on the radio. My first impression was a jamming bass line an there's way more funk than I thought there would be. The music videos were more psychedelic than expected. I am definitely stupider after listening to "Apache Rose Peacock".

Solid, but I was never the biggest RHCP fan.

Under the bridge is the only thing that saves this album. Something about RHCP I just cannot do.

I do jot like the Chili Peppers

𝘉𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘚𝘶𝘨𝘢𝘳 𝘚𝘦𝘹 𝘔𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘬 showcases a band playing tightly together, and tracks like 𝘎𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘐𝘵 𝘈𝘸𝘢𝘺 and especially 𝘜𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘨𝘦 prove they could write genuine classics. But at over 70 minutes it drags, bloated by the urge to fill an entire CD. The real weak link is Anthony Kiedis, whose nasal, often grating delivery quickly wears thin. In the alternative landscape of 1991, there were far stronger albums to spend that time on.

Gives me anxiety. 2 for Under the Bridge

I liked "Breaking the girl" and "Under the Bridge", but most of the other songs didn't work for me.

Yikes. “Under the Bridge” is a classic, but most of the rest are forgettable, obnoxious bro rock (well I guess you have to give them credit for helping to invent that category).

I liked how upbeat it was halfway through the album. The drums and bass were good, in fact, the whole rhythm section was good and the guitar gave me hints of metal riffs at times, however, I felt like their were just reheating nachos halfway through the album and I got bored of it. The vocals, which are very important to me, weren’t giving me any or any sort of emotion, so I stopped listening halfway through, but I know people love the red hot chili peppers, so I MIGHT come back later once I’ve listened to more albums.

One decent song that has been overplayed.

This was okay. RHCP are decent enough band but I’ve never really thought they made great albums. They have some good hits but I don’t think they have enough depth to fill an album with truly great songs. It’s very true for this because this album is way too long and full of stuff that just isn’t that great. It’s carried heavily by its instrumentation (I adore Frusciante’s playing and Flea is one of the funkiest bass players around), Keidis just isn’t that great. Under the Bridge is a great song and probably put this album higher than it should be.

"A little boy came along name of Louis Armstrong Said that girl who left me silly she liked the looks of me and my willy"

Funky bass lines. Listened to it a few times while at work. Honestly didn't think much of it. It reminds me of what I think Mom's vibes were when she was all sun-bleached in California. Like a super cool teenager. Definitely not my favorite of the Chili Peppers. I think I like their later stuff better.

It’s a Red Hot Chili Peppers album.

I remember how big of a deal this album was when it was released, but it's really a mixed bag. Most of the songs have goofy lyrics rapped over repetitive funk grooves. But the album does have its surprises, such as the lovely "I Could Have Lied", a standout moment in an otherwise underwhelming group of songs.

It's got the two Red Hot Chili Peppers hits I like (Give It Away and Under the Bridge) on it, so I guess this is my favourite of their albums, if only by default. Ultimately though, they're just not a band I enjoy listening to for more than a couple of songs, let alone for over an hour. By the time Anthony Kiedis started going on about the demons in his semen, I'd mentally checked out.

Tis okay

peak incelcore music

I am familiar with some of their newer songs. I am familiar with Give It Away and Under the Bridge. This is my kind of music I will listen to the rest of their discography at some point. For some reason, this particular album took me awhile to get through. Not sure if it was because of what else was going on or if I was just bored. It could also be because I’m more familiar with their later albums. But I made it through. There were really no standout songs for me on this album.

Hasn’t aged well and the crass sexual innuendo even worse. Quieter songs are OK. Can’t get past the awful lyrics though.

Torn on this one. Minus anthony kiedis they’re a really talented band but it’s hard to enjoy much else because fuck anthony kiedis. They have a good sound overall, but it’s a very one note album. Under the bridge is sweet, some of the other tracks get old fast. Lyrics aged horribly. Did I say fuck anthony kiedis?
