Not their best
Einige Hits dabei. RHCP nicht meins
Its's OK.
Good music, Very innovative! Not for the weak or the faint of heart.
I see why it was so popular in the 90’s. It has a lot of hits but I can’t get past the funk stuff. Under the Bridge is an amazing song, Break the girl amazing. Give it away is over played and suck my kiss is just…annoying. Flea is probably the best bass player ever, Fruscante is a guitar maestro ( just listen to him cover Hendrix), Chad Smith compliments the rhythm perfectly, Anthony’s got front song energy. The album could have been just a few songs shorter.
This album is fine. Highlights include Under the Bridge and (arguably) most of the first half of the album, excluding Suck My Kiss which is pretty terrible. Give It Away is also not great, being too repetitive and droning for my taste. The vocals are largely misses rather than hits, often being a kind of half-spoken-half-sung thing that definitely isn't appealing. The riffs and overall rhythm section often make up for it, especially in the opening few tracks; the band is very well-practiced and in sync with one another, making for a great sonic basis for some good tracks. However, by the latter half of the album, it's pretty clear that the Peppers are padding runtime for the sake of composing a "grand masterpiece". Props to them for making themselves known – arguably superstars – with this album. There's some good material on here, and influence from 80s rock, pop, and (soft) metal is apparent. Shaving the album down to its stronger tracks would've been a good decision.
Music: 5/5. Funky, fun, cohesive, phenomenal Lyrics/vocals: 1/5. Yet another album where the vocals fall way, way, WAY behind. Anthony Keidis's voice doesn't bother me, per se, but at times the rapping felt amateur and the actual lyrics leave a lot to be desired. Nostalgia: 4/5
Music was all over the place. Still some great songs
Mwuah
My first take is that this is an energetic band with a fun funk bend. Flea’s bass lines are on point and Chad’s drums keep up. Anthony is having a great time. His white boy rap style is not taking itself too seriously. When they navigate away from the funk with “breaking the girl” they really feel out of their element. With the drums and bass still standing out, the vocals and flute seem lost. Some redemption to be had with that junkyard breakdown bridge. Such a talented band with a charismatic frontman. The signature Anthony Keidis skittleybapadangdong is ever-present and sometimes clouds the amazing rhythm section and shredding guitar, but not too often. I do find myself wanting some of their grooves to last a little longer without vocal intervention. I realize they need to do it to switch things up, but the sensitive slow crooning is off putting, saved only by some sultry guitar licks. The lyrics and vocals really aren’t built for it. The exception to this is, of course, “under the bridge” which transports you to a place, time and struggle. Too bad they seem to apologize for it with their next track “naked in the rain”, a song that dives head first into all of the things I dislike about this band. Ultimately, I found myself oscillating between wishing this album were over and being impressed by moments of brilliance. I think that speaks to their engulfing style. Either you’re all in, or you’re on the outside looking in. If I had the energy to stand up and join them, I have no doubt I would have a blast. This is album is a great display of the punkfunkgrunge only the Red Hot Chili Peppers bring to life.
Nice and jive-y. Can definitely see the significance of it, but nothing really wowed me. 6/10
Funk rock Some great songs- Under the Bridge, Breaking the girl.
A no to all the rap/hiphop style songs. Lyrics just don't work for me. The music itself is interesting and the idea of a blend is also good. But to me, they are all failures. They fail to capture any real lyrical play, lack an indepth call and response and on-the-fly interplay of voices. Overly stylized and comes across as in-authentic, non-personal, topical or thought to be commerically sellable. The songs that cross from an acoustic to heavy electric rock sound work better although they can fall into a standard rock trope--like a stairway to heaven format.
Mix of good and bad
I loved this album back in the day!!!
some of the songs are a little harder of a sound than i typically choose for myself. iconic voice though -- no one sounds quite like anthony. under the bridge is a classic. silly lyrics (sir psycho sexy). kind of giving dispatch vibes (castles made of sand).
Gear: Fostex TH610 Mix: 🎶FUNFUNFUNFUNFUN🎶 Musik: highest highs & cringiest cringes Wertung: aber dann doch 3-4/5
Kein Riesen RHCP Fan. Aber eins ihrer besseren Alben weil noch rough und nicht so auf Hits ausgelegt. Beste ist aber der Titel
Way too much filler here. Always thought this album was overrated, bar a few decent tracks nothing really sticks. You can see the bridge between their earlier terrible funk albums and more melodic stuff that was to come. 2.5*
Can be fun (Suck My Kiss, Give It Away, Under the Bridge) despite its lyrics. Also appreciated the dynamism within the songs, always staying fresh and new, keeping the listener engaged. The opposite happens far too often in long rock records such.
When this popped up as my next album I just sighed. Then I saw it was 73 minutes and I got angry. I started listening and soon was like “Oh, am I going to like this album?” It was fun, funky, catchy, had some hits - Rubin’s production is extraordinary here! I was thinking this might be the IDEAL RHCP album to listen to. Then the second half of the album came and it’s like Rubin just walked away and let them noodle around for 40 minutes. It’s their worst excesses, FOR HALF AN ALBUM. Ugh. Stop this thing at “Under the Bridge,” it’s honestly a fun, 4 star rock pop album. For subjecting me to another album of garbage after that, I’m dropping it a whole star.
Early peppers were better, but all this showed me is that the chillis haven't evolved their sound AT ALL in 30+ years
In a word: overbearing. Kiedis's vocals wear down the avid listener. Frusciante and Flea provide ample jams as always. Overly long and not always consistently listenable. Far from the worst RHCP have to offer.
Jibbity boo bop. Skibbity itty itty. Antony Keidis just throws out nonsensical lyrics. Funk & fun, but also catchy. Got some killer tracks & got some filla. Boobity boo bah, rigga rigga rilla!
Great guitar / bass
The high points are really high but the low points are really low. I was definitely expecting to like RHCP more.
Not usually a fan of the rapping, but Give It Away is pretty fun. Under The Bridge is great of course. I feel for most of the songs they hadn't really grown into their style yet, if that makes sense. Not my favourite of their work. Low end 3
Solid. Good for a workout too!
Generally I'm not a big fan of the earlier RHCP stuff, though I think on listening to this the funkier album tracks are more engaging than some of the filler on later RHCP albums. The album flows well, though as with most 73 minute albums its too long to sustain the oomph. Give It Away is another one of those songs I've heard a lot and generally don't feel like I enjoy, but within the context of the album its hard to deny it. The drums are so hard. This album is kinda losing me the longer it goes on. The musical ideas aren't diverse enough to be continually engaging. The last song is the epitome of that - super annoying, why?! Fave Tracks: The Power of Equality, Give It Away, Under the Bridge 3.3/5
I'd give a higher score if this album stopped at Under The Bridge. I thought it would be much more obnoxious, as I generally like RHCP in small bursts, but the first 2/3 was surprisingly enjoyable and easy to listen to. However, the whole thing was too long and they put all the bad songs at the end. Stand-out: I Could Have Lied
Redifining 'all over the place,' no?
i fucking love flea like..... hes a legend. The great tracks are amazing (suck my kiss, give it away) and there is way too much horny rapping
What's with all the hate on the Chillis? They might not be the epitome of lyrical genius, but the songs on this album are bops. We enjoyed.
Reminds me of being a kid in the 90s but not in the best way. 3 for nostalgic factor and some fun bass stuff.
I like the band but I think californication is just better.
Maybe it's because we just had a Chili Peppers album recently, I wasn't feeling this one. Sure, there was some nostalgia with a few of the songs, but overall I just wasn't into it.
Geht so - teilweise ganz gut zu hören.
whatthefuck.
Muy buen funk. Me gusta. Yo no lo compraria. Pero es muy bueno
Loooong album, more up’s and downs than I remembered. Highs are really good though, there’s a 4.5 star 13 track version of this album but the “Mellowship Slinky in B minor”s bring it down to a 3 for me.
Aside from the hits I didn't really like it
I thought I would be more excited to hear this as it's been a while since I've listened to the whole album. But I still really don't like their funk music. Half of me feels like I should just listen to Parliament if I want to listen to funk. The other half of me can't stop thinking about what a douchebag Anthony Kiedis probably is. But I'm still going to give it three stars because I love the song "breaking the girl" and I really love the song "I could have lied"
Very good
Out of the 19 songs on this album (2 cover songs tacked on the end), 6 are fantastic and the rest are forgettable. Great musicianship but the lyrics are absolute trash.
Some great songs and some that we couldnt get into.
Some songs felt very generic. Instrumentals were fun sometimes. Not a huge fan of the vocals but the songs where he sings instead of doing the weird talking thing were good. Also not a huge fan of how many songs were just about sex, that just doesnt appeal to me. Also the one or few songs that were about nature, and taking care of the planet, and war is bad and all that just felt really generic and insincere. Idk. Has there ever been a good song about protecting the planet and those other causes? Is that even possible to do? Am I just too cynical? I definitely have heard several of these songs from when i was growing up and my parents played them. Some are good. Breaking the Girl and Under the Bridge were good, I liked those. Overall, not my favorite rock album ever, but I wouldnt change the radio if any random one out of most of these songs started playing.
Remember RHCP being the new big thing in high school. Never listened to this entire album. On the whole good, but long, a few too many songs.
Good songs, but not my vibe
meh. it's not their best work & several songs were so overplayed
Cool
It’s a unique sound and a strong outing with classic songs throughout. The funky naughtiness doesn’t grab me as much as it did when I heard it when I was younger.
Rhcp was one of my favorite bands growing up but this was never my favorite album. Under the bridge is the only song that saves the album for me
A Columbia House staple.
This is like if the Fun Loving Criminals figured out they were actually terrible at hip hop and decided to make an alright rock band. I think this one would be so much better if they cut the runtime in half. Hearing the same pretty good song 9 times is a lot better than hearing the same pretty good song 19 times.
I really don’t like this kind of rhythm section but other than that it’s ok
Not a huge RHCP fan but this is their best album. Double albums can be a bit of a slog at times, and while some fat could have been trimmed this one managed to keep my interest. Some great tracks on this album, loved the bass work on the first side, guitar well done, can hardly believe John was only 21. I hate Suck My Kiss. Under the Bridge is still a great track though.
Some good songs, but too long. Half the length would have definitely improved the overall product.
Some great songs on here but also about 40 minutes of slap bass filler with white men singing about how funky they are
I used to love this album. I still love under the bridge, but most of the songs feel goofy and overly crass. I’m just not into it as much.
I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. The music is very well performed. Chad Smith, John Frusciante, and Flea are incredible musicians. The lyrics were good, when they weren't just sha-ma-na-ma-namana.
There are some genuine hits. The rest is kind of dull slow dance music. This album is a pretty solid of the 90’s vibe.
A good album. In the grand scheme of modern popular music, this band probably served to bring funk back into the popular consciousness. On the other hand, Anthony Kiedis is and has always been both juvenile and overly self-serious, which often limits the Chili Peppers. Under The Bridge is a masterpiece, in part because he's writing something genuine, rather than trying to cram the maximum number of innuendos into his bandmates' work. For me, the combination of braggadocio and sexual reference just combine to give the impression of a creepy young man at a bar. When I hear his words, I find him profoundly off-putting. Like if Iggy Pop were a drunken frat boy. The others in the band are typically excellent here. Flea is a legend, John Frusciante is the smoothest California guitarist of the whole 90s scene and Chad Smith is the ever-morphing glue that holds them together. Good, but deeply flawed, much like the 90s themselves.
A few good songs, lots of disappointing rap. Under the Bridge saved it from 2 stars.
Better then I expected it to be. But there are too many songs which are just fillers.
December 15, 2023 High school album
Fun and thumping with some great hooks and licks, but pretty forgettable in the end – which is what happens when you reach for the middling mainstream. And didn’t need to be nearly this long as it’s awfully f-in’ samey. The schtick feels false given how their obvious desire for big-time fame (hence Rick Rubin), though maybe “sellout” is too strong given that they stuck largely to their well-honed style. (And kept on sticking to it for 70+ minutes). One found this decent and non-transcendent back in the day and that POV holds. Kiedis has a strong voice and mostly convincing delivery but the schtick is a bit much. The Robert Johnson cover is kinda cool. The Hendrix quite a bit less so.
Mid - 5/10
Would not listen to any of the songs on their own but thought the album as a whole from start to finish was pretty good. Feel like this is good passive music to have in the background. 7/10
I thought this one was alright. I listened while I cleaned my car and it felt right. Especially liked the parts where Flea was featured on bass — other than that the songs were solid but not amazing 6.5/10
6/10 - Overall mid but Under the Bridge brings me back so it brought it up a few points
A couple good songs, not a huge fan overall 6/10
I remember this album coming out. Very influential to me. Doesn't hit me the same any more.
Great album, couple hits, ends weird.
Haven’t listened to RHCP in a while. Enjoyed listening again. But I think they are a band you can only take in smaller doses.
only poets rhyme about their willies could i write poetry to this? maybe
overlong. contains probably the most iconic song they ever wrote (under the bridge) but its uneven and just way. too. long. I prefer Californication and Freaky Styley to this album. i know people cite this as their best but it doesn't resonate with me.
Uff, nie rangetraut. Weirde Mischung irgendwie. Klingt sehr 90er. Aber auch gar nicht so übel. Komischer Sprechgesang. Gefällt mir weiterhin erstaunlich gut! Auf Dauer dann aber doch ziemlich nervig. Bin froh, es mal gehört zu haben, werd’s aber vermutlich nicht so bald nochmal anhören.
Occasionally good. It did move things forward. A three.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers suffer from same problem as AC/DC, they have one song and just make it multiple times. Granted it is a pretty good song, but I don’t need to hear it twelve times in a 73 minute album. Too long. As a white man I have to give this credit for how it pushed forward white culture. Subtracting one point for length.
The first couple songs literally gave me a headache
A little long and not always my fave, but there were some funny songs in there!
Yes! J'aime bien le titre de cet album
This album has so many hits on it. It is starting part of the 5 album run of RHCP I enjoy the most (skipping the One Hot Minute Dave Navarro contribution - though I liked Aeroplane)... blend of nonsense lyrics that sound kinda cool (in spite of Keidis generally singing like shite), funky bass, spanky guitar licks, and overdrive guitar licks. Flea is a beast, John Frusciante is a beast. When it works it works, when it doesn't the lyrics are usually the fault because the musical compositions are good. Not a perfect album by any means, the mix is a bit soft and flat and there are some tracks that could have been left on the cutting room floor. It's too long. I was originally going to rate this a 4 but I think I have to bring it down because of all the fluff. Review of Reviews: I think people enjoy this for the nostalgia..it looks like it falls flat to a lot of fresh ears or people that have preconceived notions of RHCP. Best Track: Under the Bridge
3.5 of this album was 12 songs could’ve been a high 4.
well that sure was an album. i didn't hate it but boy is there a lot of mediocre filler on here. the highs are very high (under the bridge) and the lows are oh so low (sir psycho sexy). i'm no prude but sir psycho sexy might be the worst and most generally disgusting/off-putting song i've listened to in 140 albums so far. it's just gross and feels super misogynistic. bleh. before i listened to this album all the way through,, i really lamented that it got delisted from the rock band music store. now i'm pretty much at peace with it (though it'd be nice to have under the bridge back at least). favorites: i could have lied, mellowship slinky in b major, give it away, under the bridge favorites:
Next 5 songs played by my Spotify Algorithm: Pixies - Wave of Mutilation (Doolittle Version) Ramones -Beat on the Brat David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust Alice in Chains -No Excuses Great Day -Dookie
Every RHCP song: Loop a doop, funk suckin mama In the state of california, you know that you wanna Got a big kiss and you know i’m not a faker, Bee bee beep beep, i’m cheering for the lakers Under the bridge is 10/10 though let’s be real
Compared to the last RHCP album we got, I can't believe the performances are even better on this one and the vocals are EVEN WORSE. Some of these songs super overstay their welcome, like funky monks The acoustic track is kinda dreadful, not playing to their strengths Also, god Anthony Keidis is so fucking ugly horny 3 stars.
A couple interesting ones, but it doesn't capture me unfortunately
Funky mix of songs. Good album and one the RHCP's best
I can see this being a technically strong album, but it's really only "just okay" if you aren't a fan of RHCP's sound.
I dunno, just feels kinda dated, especially after numetal co-opted the concept of white dudes rapping with a band. And why is it sooooo long.....
Some great songs but the rest are mediocre.
Quite good.
5. Suck My Kiss é a primeira que eu conheço. A familiaridade deixa uma impressão de ser bem melhor que as outras, que não sei se é real, porque ela não parece tão diferente assim delas. Mas de qualquer jeito, por esse motivo ou não, essa eu já achei daórinha ouvir. 6. I Could Have Lied é uma boa música mais calminha pra dar um respiro no funk intenso que tava até então, não é ruim não, até que é bonita. 9. Give It Away também já conheço, a linha de baixo dela é bem daóra, acima da média do álbum. 11. Under the Bridge, essa música eu acho realmente boa. Disparado a melhor do álbum. Refrão catchy. Linha de guitarra pica demais. 12. Under the Bridge, a melhorinha.
What you would expect from the Chili Peppers. A lot of their funky/white rap/discordant guitar and then one great great song. I don't know how to mark something that is generally a bore to listen to but has a stone cold classic but 3 feels very generous.
The instrumentals were good, but the singing rapping really started to be annoying at the end where I was happy it was over.
Funky classic. These guys were always unique but never a favorite. I bought this in 1991 when I was 13!!
Tight funky sounds as usual with RHCP. Listening to the whole album at once tends to get a little boring.
Funky, upbeat, lots of sexual lyrics, didn’t know this album had 20 songs. Some classics for sure.
Better than I expected, had a Beastie Boys sound to it at times which was welcome. The singles definitely aren't the best songs on this album though
5/5 for flea. The rest are just alright. Definitely foundational, don’t need to listen to a whole album
So much funk. This album is absolutely great. The guitars, bass, and drums all sound brilliant on this. It has some RHCP classics along with some great deep cuts. A few throwaway tracks in my opinion but it’s still a great all around album.
I get why it's on here, but I really don't care for RCHP, their old stuff (like this album) had it's moments tho. Ultimately, the singles on this album are pretty timeless, but the majority of the rest of the album is pretty forgettable.
I have a weird feeling towards this album. At times Red Hot Chili Peppers achieve a sound I resonate with. I finally think: "Now, now I will enjoy it." And then they come up with the most goofy or chaotic song possible. Personally, I fail to understand what is the objective behind this. However, the good songs are incredible and some of them are unmistakable melodies to must of us. Including such legendary tracks in a record surely helps in the rating. Difficult listen, interesting experience and some great hits.
funky but long
Good for the time but besides under the bridge I don’t think it holds up
Meh
Best chili peppers I've heard
Moments of genius and moments of "cock my brain to shoot my load"
not my type.
The chillies are a funny one for me. Some great songs but largely from the later albums for me. This album is pretty good but isn't really for me. Fun fact the chillies is one of the worst live bands I have seen. The show was bland and kinda lifeless.
A funky blend of sub-genres. It must have sounded so different and fresh back then, I can understand why it had the impact that it did. It also makes me wonder what music of today will bee seen as groundbreaking and formative, in the future. Fun fact: This album was released on the SAME DAY as Nirvana's 'Nevermind'.
3/5
Classic RHCP that drove them to wild popularity.
Funk - like a few of the hits but not fussed on the stranger stuff
This album is undeniably fun, especially the first half. However, the runtime is way to long, and the songs begin to sound samey in the second half. A shorter tracklist would help a lot
I had never heard this album before so it was nice to find a couple of new songs I hadn’t heard before. RHCP is a great band but for me it’s one that I need to be in the mood for to listen to a whole album again. 3.5/5
I feel like I’m playing skateboarding game in the year 2005 that isn’t Tony Hawk Do you know what it feels like I’m playing, Tony hawk underground to and if you know you know Pretty good 3.5/5
RHCP heavy bass-forward tracks are on full display here. Lyrically fun and entertaining, but it's the bass that ultimately carries this band for me. Must of the songs don't really hit, with a few exceptions that went on to become his such as "Under The Bridge", where there's a little more depth and vocals are less rap style. 3/5 for the nostalgia and bass.
this album makes you smell like SWEAT!
Some real bops
I really like listening to their playing. Not to cast dispersions on the songwriting and singing, I do like it generally, though I liked it much more on Californication. Really fun guitar and bass parts to listen to. Addendum: I think the album is too long and that makes it less focused. Once again, I feel they improved on that in Californication.
AJ: gibberish and nonsense and great bass and Frusciante and sometimes I love them and sometimes it’s whatever.
Punk rock
Liked this a lot when it came out. Now it seems very long and the opening tracks before you get into the really famous stuff do bang on a lot. I would give this a 3.5 but since that's not an option, it's a 3 again which is a bit harsh but I can't give it a 4. I think the truth of it is that I'm not that bothered about the Chilli Peppers. Ho hum.
Another classic, but honestly, it's not really my thing anymore. Ask 19 year old me, and he'd be well into it, but the funky, dirty sound just isn't what I want to listen to now. There are some stand out tracks (Under The Bridge, of course; Breaking The Girl) but the rest of it feels too much like a "time and place" album.
Good album when I was 11. Still love Breaking the Girl.
Despite being long, I didn't feel the length very much. The songs I liked already were good, but everything else was pretty forgettable. Maybe it could've been stronger if it was a tad trimmed down? I don't know. My favourite song was Breaking the Girl.
yert
Solid instrumentals, weird lyrics.
kan bli litt mykje rhcp i lengden
Streit, men klare meg uten da i kvardagen
Some great songs, a few decent ones and then some that just did not do it for me.
Mixed feelings about that one, takes me back to HS but I'm not entirely sure it's a pleasant kind od journey
Breaking the Girl and Under the Bridge are high points but the rest kind of blends into one big jam which appealed to me much more when I was 15.
I've actually listened to this one before! It's not bad! I always find the vibes are a little off with RHCP when you're not listening to them on a roller coaster, but that's life. Favorite track is probably Under the Bridge (hot take, I know).
That white people shit. First half was horrible. After SUCK MY KISS, it picks tf up. I DONT EVER WANNA FEEELLL. Nothing like seeing a white man try to hit that in public.
I Could Have Lied is the kind of RHCP I like, the rest is the kind of RHCP I dont really care for. I really liked the cover on Jimi Hendrix's song in the end, Castles Made of Sand, really like that song. (Jimi did it better)
decently good
This is far too long and has so much filler but it's rescued by a couple of the hits being absolute bops that stand the test of time. They can only do so much though, 3/5 because Kiedis is really a tough challenge to listen to at length and to really tolerate at all.
Way too long, I don't mind Kiedis' singing style in small quantities, but I definitely don't need over an hour of it at once. Definitely more punky than the stuff that comes later, makes it a harsher listen but a more interesting one. That said, I think the later albums are better executed, this band are just better at pop rock than they are at punk - presumably the success of Under The Bridge sent them that way? 3/5.
The hits are hits for a reason but the album as a whole is really boring. Spaghetti on the wall situation.
It was okay. They all kind of sounded the same though. I would listen to it again.
First song sounds deadass like Mudslide Crush from Lemonade Mouth I like this overall
desolee paternel
3.5 solid.
3.5 Very good.
breaking the girl - catchy asf, I'm a sucker for the flow of this song easily a 9/10 and one of my favorites off the album. other notable songs suck my kiss and funky monk
liked this more than i expected?
Best Songs: -Under the brigde -Breaking the girl
mid, sounds like a mess imo
mid af
It's an ok album. Some great songs in there
The hits are great, couldn’t get into much else
Eh
The highs of this album are fantastic, but it’s just a little too watered down with filler.
its a red hot chilli peppers album all right. 1hr 19mins is too much red hot chilli peppers for the human body to endure. every song is about 2 minutes too long. fav songs: breaking girl, i could have lied, give it away, under the bridge, castles made of sand.
All the songs are very hit or miss.
Rock con toques de hip-hop y con estilo muy particular. Fácilmente identificables. Alguna canción buena, pero nunca me convencieron del todo
Bleh
Instrumentally, this album is very very good. I actually quite liked pretty much everything in that regard and I don't have much more to say about that. Lyrically, however, is where I struggle greatly with this album. Power of Equality started us off, and that is also where my ambivalence towards the lyrics of this album began as well. It is without a doubt a good message, and I absolutely applaud it, but everything here immediately struck me as very on the nose and in your face. Cheesy, almost. I wish that cheesy was the worst description I had for the rest of this album's lyrical content. Kiedis' vocals either lift these songs to higher heights, or just absolutely take me out of the song entirely. The highs are very high, I knew and enjoyed Give it Away and Under the Bridge going into this album, and I still absolutely enjoy them coming out of it. Especially after actually being able to listen to and understand the lyrical content of Give it Away(thank you, Genius). Other high notes were Breaking the Girl, and I Could Have Lied. But man, sometimes I was just jamming away to a track like Mellowship Slinky in B Major and then Kiedis would come in with some stuff like "Blush my lady when I tell her/That I do indeed love to smell her/Sopping wet your pink umbrella" Obviously I have to laugh, but man does it take me out of it. And that's how I felt for the vast majority of the album, honestly. I think I finally started to get it when Sir Psycho Sexy came on and I had the revelation: Is it a Slim Shady alter ego thing where we just say the most absurd shit we can think of for fun? As soon as I looked at these lyrics in that mindset, I laughed out loud at "Believe me, Eve, she gave good reason/Booty looking too good not to be squeezin'/Creamy beaver hotter than a fever." I still don't know if I can say I like it, but I did get quite a few laughs out of this one. I did get a good laugh as I was listening to The Greeting Song and saw that Kiedis also hates the lyrics on that one. Hopefully Rick Rubin enjoyed his song about cars and girls, at least. For a final verdict: This is an album with a lot of very very good music, but very not good lyrical content. With some very very key exceptions that carry the album.
Nirvana's Nevermind and this album, both release on 9/24/1991. I don't really call RHCP a hard rock band but more like and funk n roll band. I think you have to be in a certain mood to get into these guys, but they do have a lot of tunes I do enjoy. This album ran a little long for my taste and I was ready for it to end, but I do have several songs I enjoyed. Blood Sugar Sex Magik, The Power of Equality, I Could Have Lied and maybe the best off the album, Suck My Kiss. Pretty sure I was trying to convince Mindy to let me use a few lines from this song in our wedding vows. I was denied and further proof that my wife is the sensible one in this relationship. There are several songs that I think are solid, but radio managed to ruin for me over the years. Give It Away, Under the Bridge and to a lesser extent Breaking The Girl. This one tough for me to rate. Give me a few beers and tokes and I digging most of it. Trying to get into a good workout or just having as background music, kinda wears on you. I'm going to give a 3.5 but rate as a 3 for the scorecard. To my group, my phone is dead and will be several days before I'm up and running. Mindy has been hesitant to give up her phone for so some of my reviews may be delayed
Pretty good! Pretty familiar with this one. Flea really doing the work.
Man, this is one of those bands where sometimes they are really good, and other times I can't stand them. You really gotta be in a mood to listen to them which I think is due in part to the lead singer. The first track starts out pretty strong and has a really good bass part in it. You know it might just be that most of the time when the lead singer is singing is when I generally don't like the band/songs as much. Their instrumentation is great in this album though. If it were just someone else singing I think this would be a really good album. It's really interesting because the instrumental is actually really good, but the lead just ruins it most of the time. This album has 19 tracks and a run time of 1hr 19 minutes. This is too much of a band that I usually would rather not listen to. This is a low 3/5 only on the merit that the instrumental carries the fuck out of this album
I'd rate the documentary higher than the album itself. Sex-crazed Kiedis hasn't aged well and it isn't going to get better, plus the instrumentals overall don't make up for what's lacking lyrically.
This is my first dive into a full Chili Peppers album. I’ve always enjoyed the singles and… I think they’re gonna stay a singles band for me. The style is fun — really good hard rock and I love that slappy funk bass — but a lot of these songs are… kinda dumb (like “Suck My Kiss”). But I think this album benefits from a not-very-close listen. Not every album needs to be listened to closely on headphones. Some stuff is best played in the background so you can jam out without noticing that the lyrics are silly. But man I do love “Give It Away.” (That boing noise in the mix is so funny too.) And “Under the Bridge” is gorgeous. The album has a pretty even one-to-one ratio of eye-rolling lyrics to head-banging riffs so I can’t get mad at that.
Classic old school Chilis. Never a huge fan but there are some good tunes on here that remind me of my youth.
kiinnostavat instrumentaalit ja basson läpsytys pitää kiinnostuksen yllättäväm korkealla että jaksaa tuplatun, double albumin kuunnella liian pitkä silti. vokalistin köhinä tuhkainen heikko ääni on albumin heikoin osuus + pedofiili + +huumehörhöily breaking the girl
Heard it before?: Yes Enjoy it?: I did (not so much the deluxe version) it’s full to the brim of angelic vocals and snappy guitar work I adore Favourite song: Track 11 - Under The Bridge
Not a huge RHCP fan, but this is probably their best.
Jos ei olisi nostalgia-arvoa, en varmaan yhtään tykkäisi tästä, mutta mennyttä ei voi pyyhkiä. Tämähän on liian pitkä! Mutta "B-puolen" alku on tosi hyvä, huipentuu Under the Bridgeen
eu gostei de californication quando ouvi, mas nesse album as coisas parecem meio bagunçadas ainda pra eles, com rap e hard rock colidindo demais. eu tenho certeza de que é um bom album pros fãs de red hot, mas pra mim nada de mais.
Some gems, also some really samey songs I didn't have much interest in.
Anthony Kiedis is sucking my penis
Didn't really feel it just felt like a bunch of noise.
Great in parts but feels really dated
Wasn't as good as I remembered
Too long, singing is annoying, honks trying to be funky
Hit and miss
"Blood Sugar Sex Magik" is the fifth studio album by The Red Hot Chilli Peppers. This album was noted as having a different style than their previous album "Mother's Milk" with less heavy metal guitar riffs, funk and punk and having more melodic songwriting from guitarist John Frusciante. I will say that's true on their hits but they still bring the funk for the majority of the other songs. It was produced by Rick Rubin and have themes of sexual innuendos, lust, drugs and death. It was interestingly recorded in the mansion owned by Harry Houdini where they also lived. The album was a huge success selling over 13 million copies, propelling them to arena rock status and a seminal release in the alternative rock explosion of the 1990's. The album opens up with two funky songs. "The Power of Equality" has the groove going, singer Anthony Kiedis doing his rap-singing thing and a decent guitar solo (that happens throughout most of these songs). Racial equality, prejudice and sexism. "If You Have to Ask" was the fifth and final single. Kiedis whispering and stream of consciousness lyrics. The melody finally comes to the forefront in "Breaking the Girl." Acoustic guitar and interesting and strange percussion. All band members were involved and those instruments were from a garbage dump. It's Kiedis constantly shifting relationships and being left with nothing. The first song I remember from this album and their third single is "Suck My Kiss." A more aggressive and prominent bass. Kiedis strutting his stuff. A softer guitar is used in "I Could Have Lied" A subtle melody and one of the better guitar solos. Kiedis whispering and about a relationship he had Sinead O'Connor. A hidden gem on this album. "Give It Away" was the first single and was based on a conversation Kiedis had with Nina Hagen. Anytime I have the chance, I will mention Nina Hagen. Chaotic. The band jamming and setting into probably their best groove on the album. "Under The Bridge" is the song that sent them to that arena level. Kiedis writing about his drug addiction and low point. Frusciante tried to counter the sad lyrics with happier chords. Whatever they did, it worked. This album has probably the most popular Chilli Pepper songs that are pretty much rock radio staples. The songs are melodic but there is still very much a funk element throughout. Flea's bass is toned a lot relative to their other albums which was on purpose by the way. It is long at 73 minutes and they definitely could have trimmed it down but you can't argue with that 13 million number. For me, this is agood album ad probably their best along with "Californication."
under the bridge is one of my favorite songs. the rest of the album is ok. it's too long.
Overall this is a really well produced album. Musically I think they're really strong and sound super tight. The drums and guitars are all solid. There's some interesting rhythmic things happening throughout. I agree with another reviewer that I really like the jamming moments and wish there were more of those / they were extended. Like I said, they play well together and those bits are great (found in songs like 'Sir Psycho Sexy'). On the other side I'm not a big fan of the general rapping and musical style for most of the songs, and it's also a long album. RHCP remain a band that I really like a number of songs from, but who I'm not that interested in overall. Under the Bridge remains a stone-cold classic.
Some good tracks but I didn't feel the whole album hung together very well.
I wish every song could be as good as Under the Bridge
I enjoyed myself with this. At least for a short while. And not just because of nostalgia. BSSM is entertaining and impressive in parts. And while there are elements of the wannabe-90s-funk I could do without—especially where it fuses with wannabe-hiphop—I admit, I am mildly interested in the space where RHCP fuses funk with punk. Though I am firmly uninterested where any of this attempts to cross over with alt pop or adult contemporary. Listen, RHCP (or was it Rick Rubin?) saw a hole in the billboard charts that the band’s perverse brand of punk/funk/alt-pop might just party-boy its way into. And it did. There is vision there. And there is immense talent in this band. Flea, for instance, is a vital American cultural and musical icon and one of the best-ever bass players. Kiedis, meh, I’m not so hot on him, his presence, or his voice. Rick Rubin and John Frusciante are likely the forces that made this album the cross-over success that it is and they’re both OK in book, and obviously immensely talented and important to their craft. But the buck stops there. Oh Chad Smith is fine too. Blood’s greatest fault is its runtime. I like the first 6 tracks and very little more than a riff after. It’s just repetitive, monotonous, and sounds quite like a headache. I like that Steve Huey of AllMusic called it "probably the best album the Chili Peppers will ever make.”That’s the best dig at a band that was doing something novel with pre-existing pieces and doing it well but not exactly combing the ocean floor for artistry, poetry, or depth. They really couldn’t and wouldn’t do much better than this using the formula they were using. All they could and would do is lean further and further away from the punk-funk roots that once made them interesting, in favor of an all-out, soft-rock sound designed for arenas, nostalgia, and radios. And I actually disagree with Mr. Huey; the best RHCP album is the George Clinton-produced Freakey Styley. But still, BSSM is a pretty good funk album for a bunch of strung-out white boys living by the beach. If the first 6 tracks are a 4/5, what follows quite nearly approaches a 1, which makes this a 2/5. But I'll give an extra half-point for Flea, and an extra half-point for nostalgia's sake. I used to listen to this album A LOT as a kid.
This is a LOT of album, and I'm not quite interested enough to playlist a shorter one. Brilliantly played with comically strange and horny lyrics. Flea tones it down to great effect. Love the bashy drum bit.
3.5
Rick Rubin earns a star, Flea earns another, and Under the Bridge gets the last. Everything else I'm very much indifferent to. A decent record.
Starts out weaker than I remembered. Gets better
Beetje aparte muziek voor de liefhebber, maar is ook voor anderen heel goed te luisteren. ***
Yeah, just ok. Good funky alternative. Great iconic hits in there as well. But, again, I gotta be in the mood.
Several good songs on this album followed by hard-snare slap-bass low-effort punk and two Hendrix covers. Three stars
This is an album that I owned when I was younger, but it's one that I remember skipping a lot of songs on so that I could get to the good tracks. Now I can remember why. This album is very repetitive. I don't know that I would say that it's a bad album. It certainly has its highlights. Unfortunately, listening to so many albums on this list has introduced me to a lot of music that sounds substantially similar to RHCP, which makes them feel much less revolutionary than I thought they were when I was younger. Now, this album feels very uninspired, and I still have 6 more songs to get through before I get to hear Give It Away. I have been listening to this album for 5 hours, and I'm only on song number 7. Is this album the secret to time travel? 3/5, with a handful of songs doing all of the work, since most of the songs on this album are so boring that I can't be bothered to look up their names to talk about them
Red Hot Chili Peppers thrash their way through 1991, as grunge bursts out of the floorboards all around them. I’ve only heard “Californication” in the past and really didn’t like it, but I haven’t been able to shake a second-hand respect for the Chilis as musicians: it’s an empirical truth that John Frusciante is a peerless guitarist, and that Flea is one of the greatest bassists of his era. In “Blood Sugar Sex Magik”, they’re key ingredients in an intriguing cocktail of blistering hard-rock, slightly abrasive rap and stomping funk, throwing in the odd radio-friendly hook. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn’t, and it’s much longer than it needs to be, but there’s an impressive raw energy running through this album which can’t be ignored. Most of the best songs are in the opening stretch, before things get too stale. I got a kick out of the bone-dry guitar scratching its way through “If You Have to Ask”. “Breaking the Girl” calls to mind the dark acoustic folk of Led Zeppelin III, and “Funky Monks” is the loosest and most enjoyable track to be had: danceable in the best way. There are nice moments scattered across the remainder of the record, including Flea’s liquid bass solo in “Naked in the Rain”, a surprise trumpet hiding in the left channel and singalong wordless refrain in “Apache Rose Peacock”, and the welcome outlier of the nicely melodic, undisputed hit single “Under the Bridge”. The sequencing is well done, with tracks running into each other to keep a nice sense of pace. The closer, a tossed-off cover of Robert Johnson’s “They’re Red Hot”, calls to mind Abbey Road’s “Her Majesty” or Night at the Opera’s “God Save The Queen” as a novelty throwaway coming in after an epic climax. It’s a fun, lighthearted way to finish such an unwieldy album. So “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” is funkier, rawer and- it has to be said- hornier than I expected. It doesn’t all land, and there’s not enough variety for such a long running time, with the band frequently resorting to shouted rap over fairly generic funk riffs. The shoutier it gets, the more grating and wearing: “Suck My Kiss” and “Give It Away” are both a real chore to get through. But at its best, there’s enough strength in this album to keep it lithe and lively. I’d take it over “Californication” any day.
A very well received album, a change in style from the band for sure but not in a bad way. A lot of solid songs here that helped bring RHCP to the top of the charts and into every house at this point. First time listening to it front to back, and it was all very solid, classic songs on there but also found some I haven’t heard that were all so good! Very solid album.
This album is a classic for a reason, and it deserves that credit. Tracks like Breaking the Girl and Give it Away still hold up, but overall it’s a product of its time. RHCP would go on to develop their sound a lot more subtlety and with a better focus on songwriting. The production here is “sharp” in a pretty unpleasant way, and the album is weighed down by filler tracks like They’re Red Hot. Give me Californication, let’s go.
The vibes on this album are absolutely bonkers. I was torn the whole time between whether I loved or hated it, settled in the middle. Excellent musicianship, deeply corny lyrics, mostly very fun but maybe better in short bursts.
Corny lyrics over mostly solid instrumentals. This would be a 2 without Give it Away and Under the Bridge. Most of the rapping is pretty bad and detracts from the overall experience, but Give it Away is hilarious and one of their best songs. I hope that Californication is on this list because that album is a 5.
Some fun, funky songs by a very talented band. The lead singer/rapper wasn't great, but good enough to not derail the whole thing. I award them 3 tube socks, someone is gonna have to go without. 🧦🧦🧦
Interesting stuff but nothing good
I like RHCP, but really only know the singles. I liked the songs I already knew, but none of the other songs enticed me to listen to this album again.
Rick James, James Brown, and RHCP all subscribe to the genre called Funk. Discuss, with examples. This aside (and all three have places in my musical heart, albeit for very different reasons), Under the Bridge is the ultimate bait and switcher. Personally, I think they deserved all the new people it introduced to them.
There are elements of this that are great, and then there are elements that are annoying.
"Give it away" "Under the bridge" spoko, reszta średnia. Californication lepsze. Trochę za długi i byle jaki rap. Takie 3.5, jakby był krótszy to pewnie 4- by wpadło.
1 absolute masterpiece, the rest mediocre rhcp has better albums
Hurr Hurr 'willy'. I've definitely listened to this plenty in the past, I think probably because boys liked it. I guess it would be a 3.5 because I prefer it to other 3 rated albums but I'm not sure it's a 4. Does go on a bit too.
Wasn’t a fan of the first half of the album but the second half was pretty good
1/1- Playing Xbox
One of their most popular albums is also one of their more popular titles. It's good in a commercially accessible way.
So, as I'm listening to this album, I thought to look over my earlier review (Californication), and god damn... it sums it up perfectly. So I copied and pasted it. I'm resolving to working smarter, not harder, in 2023. I can't quite put my finger on what it is about this band I don't enjoy. I appreciate their honesty, but something leaves me flat. As in the case of "Suck My Kiss" — I was thinking, "hey, this is a cool tune," but before the song was over, I was less smitten. Kind of emblematic of how I feel about the RHCP. There are plenty of great moments, and while Anthony Kiedis is a singular presence as a vocalist (and Flea as a bassist), I prefer him when he goes with a "less is more" approach, and that's not usually his style. I also wasn't knocked out by the guitar work. I guess this is just not a band I love. I've had bandmates (bassists, specifically) who love this band, and they've been on my radar from early on (1985's Freaky Styley), but I've never been drawn in. I like them on a song-by-song basis, but not enough to go all in.
i understand why this is here, just never been a fan of their sound. 7/10
I love the guitar but I also got stuck of it by the end. Good album
Really good also really strange in a way
Nostalgic soundtrack Emotes feelings of a time simpler and sunny
Its a low 3 from me. Almost creeping in to 2 terroritory but saved by one or two good songs.
I don't think there were any hidden gems on this album. The good ones all got played a million times on the radio. Reasonably entertaining, but whole album feels fairly juvenile/simplistic (or maybe that's just nostalgia and age-association)
Uh Oh. According to The Good Place I might go to hell for this one. I knew two songs off of this, Under the Bridge and Suck My Kiss. Under the Bridge is easily the big standout from this album. I'm just not in love with the rap singing from the rest of the album. The bass and guitar are solid for sure, the rest is not much to write home about.
It's been about 30 years since I've really given this album a listen. It does show its age, but this was still a fun listen. This is the Chili Peppers at their best - funky, confident and gleefully libidinous. I'm less tolerant of the horndog vibe than I was at age 20, but I will say as a woman that this is more sex positive than exploitative or demeaning. There's just a lot of it. But for all the bravado, there are also surprising moments of introspection and vulnerability that really add a lot of depth to the album. Most importantly, the musicianship on here is no joke, just really excellent. There are quite a few songs that are ultimately forgettable, but the standout tracks are pure classics. High 3, not quite a 4. Fave Songs: Give It Away, Breaking the Girl, Under the Bridge, Funky Monks, I Could Have Lied, The Righteous & the Wicked
ok
There were some standouts but a lot of songs that I didn't like.
Flea's cool, but I never really got into the RHCP. Don't get me wrong - there are a few great songs on this album, but I can only take their "style" for about 3 of them and then I'm out. Still, they warrant a spot on the list given how recognizable of a sound they created.
I've always liked "Mother's Milk" by RHCP. The band is really locked in, the vocals and everything else really grooves. The over of "Higher Ground," holy crap this kicks serious butt. Then this album comes out, and I listen to it and it just... yawn. I have two major gripes about this album: 1) It's too long. It was too long when I first heard it back in the 90s. I was like, "Geez how many songs is this thing?" 2) Anthony Kiedis is really not a good singer. I listen to songs like "Breaking The Girl" and even "Under The Bridge" and I think "man, the band sounds great. Imagine what this song would sound like if there was a better singer doing the vocals." He sounds like he has a cold. Or he's high. Probably both. Really detracts from the song. "Sheeeeee was a guuuuuuuhhhhhrrrrrrllllllll....." Yikes. And his scatting. Dude. Stop. Just, stop. Anyway, then there's songs like "Sir Psycho Sexy" and "Apache Rose Peacock". They just sound dumb and sophomoric today. "Under The Bridge" is still a good song, but "Take me to the place I luuuuuuuuuuuve." Gah. Sorry the vocals detract from it too much for me. He gets better on other ones. "One Hot Minute" is awesome. But this one I never got why it was so great.
I remember being super into this album as a teenager. I still like most of the songs, but the album as a whole runs way too long. 3.5/4
Not bad. Not great either. Why is this 72 minutes long? Some great things on here surrounded in duds. 3/5
i want to like it a bit more than i actually do. the ballad bits (breaking the girl and under the bridge) are phenomenal. give it away is also incredible, though the rest have a very cool RHCP energy and funk that is unique and exciting. though the remainder don't really elevate the album for me.
Liked this one, will give it another listen at some point, different Unique and interesting
A decent album from a very talented group of musicians. The album was perhaps a bit too long for my liking. After Under The Bridge, the album became harder to concentrate on and enjoy since the musical variety in the album is slim. Still, the musicianship in this album is world class. They are one of the most successful groups in the world for good reason. Flea is a master on the bass. Mellowship Slinky, Breaking The Girl and Under The Bridge are probably the best songs on the album. Decent album, but was glad when it was over. Would rate it a 4 if six or seven songs were cut off.
Ok.. I listened to this CD, on my disc man, for probably 6 months straight. It was like '91 and I was like 11 or 12 lol. That summer into fall it was this record, Nirvana's Nevermind and Pearl Jam's 10. There are so many songs about heroin on here which is wild as I had no idea as a pre teen. Also the lead singer and bassist both worked as hustlers in Hollywood before getting famous. So that's hot sort of if we're objectifying sex work. Are we anymore? Not sure. By the end of the 6 or so months, I honestly never touched this CD again. I don't know if it was the fault of RHCP's but also Nirvana just became my whole world and with them came like dozens of new bands from their scene and a bish got put on big time. Still the skill level is there, they were obsessed with funk and I think are owed a debt bringing that funk sound into rock or punk or whatever this is haha.
This is fun. Again, not the closest listen, but this this is a good time.
This band is very nice. I take the songs "Give it away" and "Under the bridge".
We saw these guys live at a small club in Ottawa after the release of their 1985 album. It was a chaotic show that started with Flea smashing a beer bottle on the stage. Most of the band members wore diapers. The punky funk style was new at that time, I loved it, but it didn't hold my interest for long. This LP is more melodic, the guitar playing is great and I think "Give It Away" is one of the top hi energy pop songs of the 90s.
6,5/10
5/10. Couple of good songs on here, but as an album, boy does it drag.
Far more than the recommended daily amount of Red Hot Chili Peppers… 6/10
- First listen - Better than Californication - Way too long, mix of great and meh songs - UNDER THE BRIDGE is the best RHCP song by a distance - Not a fan of SUCK MY KISS at all - Best songs: UNDER THE BRIDGE, THE POWER OF EQUALITY, FUNKY MONKS
This was apparently the first album by the chili peppers that featured their trademark sound and I can definitely tell because it's not quite to the greatness of Californication but still very distinct. Under the bridge is a great song and the album got better as it went along but I still wasn't enjoying it as much as other peppers music. Also give it away is an overrated song.
I recall liking this at the time, but didn't like it this listen.
Pretty decent, not that much to say about it really.
Feeling a 3 on this one. I've heard a number of RHCP songs before, and generally been a fan of them, so I suppose i'm a bit disappointed that this doesn't quite live up to the image of them I built in my mind. There's a number of songs that I like on this album, but very few that I really enjoy. Lots of the songs sound very similar on this album, too. It's a good sound, lyricism similar to hip hop applied to rock, and it sounds great but it's hard to differentiate all the songs on the album.
They’re really just having fun this things goofy and funky but some go too goofy and funny and horny and it shidst
The instrumentals were very well done, and the vocal performance was decent. I liked the funky vibe of the album.
Lots of their classics, decent.
Yep, pretty classic. Not my favorite band or album of all time, but fun.
Im already a fan of the Chili Peppers though hadn't listened to this album in full before.
its alright, not the best for most occasions
under the bridge brings back some memories but there are gaps between good moments
Had like 3 or 4 interesting songs but if it came out today people would laugh
What can be said that Yasi Salek hasn't already explored? The episode of Bandsplain about RHCP really did change my view of the Peppers but this album is a solid work from a band that has evolved so much over the decades.
I remember watching the documentary of the making of this album. It's definitely a classic. I fell off liking them decades ago, but there's no doubt that this album has a great sound and classics. Just not for me.
I had never listened to the whole album. I hadn't realized the extent of rock and jam that was combined.
Mostly good unclean fun. The surfer-slacker vibe is not real credible given how much they wanted to be — and succeeded in becoming — big stars. Repetitive AF with nearly every song having the same gronky and crunching guitars and greasy licks.
I think RHCP are fine, but honestly it was a time and a place in High School for me and this style of rock doesn't do much for me anymore. For 1991 though it's banging.
Some class tracks punctuated by some dross
I was looking forward to this one. "Under the Bridge" has always been a top favorite, and "Give it Away" has always been a solid jam. I loved about a third of the very long album. That third would get a five. But there’s that whole other hour there.
I dig the funk-rock sound of the Chili Peppers. I know that I have listened to this album, but it has been ages. I had fun with the first two-thirds or so of the album. I think that if the album would have ended at Track 12, it would have scored higher from me.
I'm pretty sure I've heard this whole album before but certainly not for a couple of decades. I didn't recognize more than a handful of the song titles and was familiar enough with the first couple of tracks. I love the full, bass-forward sound and the shouty singing that seems very 90s to me now. Oh, yeah, here's Breaking the Girl. That's nice and different. Then a bunch of songs. Then Give It Away, which is fantastic. Eventually Under the Bridge plays and that's ok, especially the key change and, surprisingly, the bridge. And then...there are like six more songs. None of which seem all that necessary. I was really ready for it to be over. Really ready.
its a decent album and what it does, it does well but considering the length of it, i feel it could lose some material without losing much value, under the bridge is a great song obviously
Not my favourite Chili’s album but can keep it on.
Such a push-pull for me and this band. I listened to this album a lot when it was first released, but quite a bit of their work kind of annoys me and I can never figure out why. After a short while, I just stopped listening to them.
Ahh the Red Hot Chili Peppers. A band that is so hard for me to judge. Some songs of theirs I love and other times I'm just like fuck off.
California. Should have warned ya. Played this a lot at the time, too much actually, as it’s over familiar and not in a good way. Still, some impressive riffs and licks and great production
the album has great music background; the lyrics are not what i am used to... but that is the choice of the performer.
Ah! Back when I was not embarrassed to admit I enjoyed RHCP. I could not get enough of this album when it first came out. The union of rock and funk was something my musical ear had apparently been craving. Flea, Frusciante and Smith (and arguably Rick Rubin) put together a masterpiece, that has easily endured the decades since. Smith's jazz drumming is relentlessly precise and uncharacteristically diverse for that era of popular music. Flea elevated the bass guitar to a main instrument and also brought explosive personality to the stage and to recordings. And yet, they together never compromised on remaining the tight-knit rhythm section. In and amongst all of that, Frusciante steers clear of the need for a rhythm guitar part at all by magically weaving a sonic fabric of riffs, solos and powerful chord explosions. What is on a bit shakier ground are Kiedis' contributions. While some of the sincere songs like 'I Could Have Lied' and 'Under the Bridge' are quite powerful, much of the lyrical content across the rest of the songs range from fractional thoughts, to gibberish, to outright celebrations of misogyny. I remember gleefully singing along to all of these songs, so this is definitely also a lot about my sensibilities changing over time, but it's sad how much it takes away from my fond memories of the album.
Rock
A bit hit and miss. Dislike shouty RHCP anyway and this was a bit too much of that.
Strong 3, I see the appeal and I like it but definitely don’t love it
very long
Already familiar. Would have been a 4 once upon a time. Probably just a 3 now
Not RHCP's best album, kind of a mess, really. But has great songs, like Under the Bridge and Breaking the Girl.
I'm familiar with the Chili Peppers, and always liked them, more or less. Not enough to buy any of the albums, though, so I've never listened to this all the way through. About halfway through I'm willing to say this hasn't really aged that well. The actual music, especially the bass, is consistently fantastic. But the vocals, including the lyrics themselves, not so much. I was rather enjoying the groove on Mellowship Slinky in B Major, until the singing started. I can't help but enjoy Give It Away, silly as it is, and Under the Bridge will always be a great song. Otherwise this album is a mixed bag from great stuff (Breaking the Girl) to cringeworthy (the title track/Apache Rose Peacock/Sir Psycho Sexy). Also it goes on. for. ever. I guess I have grown out of RHP?
Quite good but I still prefer Californication better. I much more like the more regular rock or funk rock tracks than the rap rock ones which I feel is a bit dated as a genre nowadays (at least for me).
Did not age well. Some killer songs but the overall start-to-finish album doesn't hold up.
OK I guess
I don’t really like it. The guitar and the bits of rapping sound amazing ,but I don’t enjoy listening to it.
A good, solid album with a number of highlights and not a great deal of filler. It would benefit from being tighter and shorter though.
Too long
Enjoyable but as I often feel with RHCP, becomes tedious. Some songs were hits for me and others misses.
Slightly exhausting album. Very Red Hot Chili Peppers. Several hits one has known for a long time.
7/10, really grew on me as I listened, fantastic riffs, truly excellent, not quite my thing, but so we'll made I like it.
Weow duude
Better than I was expecting with a nice swagger, the talent of the musicians also helps
Despite my growing antipathy towards RHCP, I actually quite enjoyed that album.
Two cracking singles and plus Breaking The Girl and the title track save a bland melange of funk rock rap. Fop? I think I'm saying the bad Fop outnumbers the good Fop 2 to 1, but the good Fop is twice as good as the bad Fop. Middle marks.
There are few songs I like there
Revisiting a staple of my mid teens. Bits really hold up. Other bits… do not.
I have a certain amount of nostalgia for this album, and some of the singles are still absolute tunes, but there's a lot of cringe on here too... Think I prefer RHCP in alt rock mode, rather than funk mode... Fave track - "Give it Away", predictably enough!
Meh
Flea and Frusciante are top tier bass and guitar players but Anthony Kiedis’ vocals and songwriting haven’t aged well for me
Deeply embedded in the college experience of the early 90s, the music jams pretty hard but I can't fully get past the juxtaposition of the extra dirty silliness with the super self-important kinda dumb pontificating.
Will Ferrell is such a talented drummer. Not the best actor really. Not the worst mind. He’s not Alec Baldwin running round the set shooting people kind of bad.
Have you ever rubbed chilli under your foreskin and then nailed a deaf girl? It's total bedlam. We sounded like a broken accordion being squeezed by a cartoon donkey on crystal meth. Similar to this album.
This alternative & funk rock album is the Red Hot Chili Peppers' fifth, and launched the band into worldwide fame. The album achieved a platinum certification in just under a year and is now certified seven times platinum. Fans & critics appreciated the band having less emphasis on the heavy metal style, because it allowed the other musical elements - as well as the lyrics - to shine. "Give It Away" & "Under The Bridge" were the most popular songs on the album. I really enjoyed listening to this earlier work from the RHCP band.
