Reviews (page 4 of 13)

Good old classic rock! Great beats and easy to listen to.

Delicious classic rock with generous portions of guitars, layered with plenty of keyboards, topped with bass and drums for texture.

Well, let's start with the blindingly obvious. This is the one with Smoke on the Water. It sits on the record like Godzilla on Tokyo. You can't take your eyes off it and it crushes everything else. The music on this is pretty damn good. Lord's organ solos go all classical at the drop of a powdered wig, Blackmore's guitar is Ray gun smart. The bass and drum section nail it to the floor and Gillan's voice is, well, distinctive. The lyrics are serviceable at best. I don't think anyone listens to Space Trucking for the poetry. It's a lot off fun without being particularly deep.

This album is like that amazing two month hurricane just after a relationship. You were such a good boyfriend, polite at social gatherings, attentive, present, and always doting on your partner. And she dumped you anyway. Fuck it, time to find solace in the bottom of a bottle. You walk into a bar and order a whiskey. When asked what mixer you want, you call the barman an idiot and tell him you just want the bottle. Your friends are there to check on you. Some are excited that the real you is going to make a triumphant return, some are worried that you are hurting more than you are letting on. Maybe they are both right. You're honestly not sure. Your ex-girlfriend's friend has walked into the bar. She is a babe and you always got the feeling she was pretty keen on you, not that she'd do anything about it while you were in a relationship with her best friend. But that was then, and this is now. You're gonna drink this whole bottle of whiskey first, and if the girl is still there you'll try your luck. End of the night, you're either going home with her or you are smashing a kebab down a dingy alleyway before walking home and cursing the moon. Win win either way.

Крута, еееерок 4/5

I never knew the name of Highway Star or that it was Deep Purple. Smoke on the Water is everyone's first classic rock song, with and iconic riff (bass line? idk). Lazy and Space Truckin' are jams.

Highway Star - 5/5 Maybe I'm a Leo - 3.5/5 Pictures of Home - 4/5 Never Before - 3.5/5 Smoke on the Water - 5/5 Lazy - 4/5 Space Truckin' - 4.5/5 Despite only knowing them as the one band who makes the one song where everyone learns how to play guitar, these guys in a full album can in fact rock. It still suffers from that early heavy metal gig where they can't decide between heavy metal and blues rock so split the album, and the blues-influenced tracks lack behind the hard rock and metal influenced songs. But the highs are high enough to make me forgive that minor flaw. Overall: 4/5 Favorites: Highway Star, Smoke on the Water, Space Truckin'

Really enjoyed this album. Didn't realise how many of these songs I knew. Great back to back. Definitely an album to have in the background and enjoy.

Hello again to Deep Purple who I only discovered through this website. I simply like them and I cannot deny it. Just keep shredding etc. I consider ‘boring me’ the biggest musical sin, and for some reason Deep Purple do not bore me. Pictures of Home slaps. Oh and this album has The Big One! The whole thing feels like one big song, like you’ve stepped into their world for 40 minutes, and I don’t mind being along for that ride at all. I like all the weird shit they keep throwing in. I think I love Deep Purple. Embarrassing but I must be true to myself.

Pretty good for its year. Definitely didn't hate it. But it wasn't as amazing as some other albums. 4/5

This was some good solid rock. I’ve admittedly given Deep Purple more of the cold shoulder than I should have over the years, but hearing this made me reconsider. It’s full of great guitar riffs, they really were a solid band.

i simply enjoy classic rock.

Nice classic.

Love the guitars on the first song. Pictures of home is epic. The melody + the instrumentation really takes me to another place. Lazy is the complete opposite of what it’s called the build up makes me want to hear it live. And the bluesy hard rock rhythm is enjoyable to hear. 8/10

Loved it honestly

Classic rock album, wasn't expecting much but it's pretty cool.

Really liked this album. Just solid classic rock, also the closing track was great.

Unexpectedly good. I knew their big hit and suspected it was a "grandfathered in" song. Turns out there was more there that hit. Good stuff.

Ended up liking this album way more than I expected. Some really cool riffs and enjoyable songs. Lyrically it's a little weak (or at least uninspired) in spots, but overall this was a really fun listen.

Fun album! Love the keyboards and bass, plus some pretty rockin dual guitar solos!

Good rock album.

Listened to the first half yesterday, finished the second half today. Lovely album. I've been craving more prog rock recently and this gives me a nice mix of Pink Floyd and King Crimson sounds. But this album is very different from those groups, they're just the only ones I feel I can compare them to. Its sound has a nice take on prog, it's more upbeat which i love.

I had only heard Smoke on the Water going into this, so I was really surprised by how forward thinking this album feels. A lot of 70s rock, especially the early metal stuff, feels very dated and it's definitely not as hard as it used to be. But this one had some pretty great riffs, and some of the use of distortion felt pretty futuristic. Very impressive album in my mind, it was so much better than I was expecting. Favorites: Highway Star, Smoke on the Water, Space Truckin'

Riffs for days!

Hell yeah this shit rocks. Highway Star and Smoke on the Water on the same LP. Let's fucking go.

Pure rock, fucking liked it

- LIked star truckin' - the album is oldie rock. Similar to other stuff.

Haven't listened to Deep Purple before (apart from Smoke on the Water) and I really enjoyed it. I can definitely see why it's on this list.

Im an absolute sucker for the guitar on the first track JESUS. I think that this is the first truly rock album that I enjoyed the whole way thorugh. The guitarist did an incredible job, whereas the album wouldn't have been on the same level of quality as it is.

I’ve heard this before and i own it. Space Truckin’ kicks ass! It is my go to karaoke song. I was forced to sing it a few weeks ago at a friends birthday karaoke party as i was getting ready to leave and it hurt my voice. This is a big dumb rock album with lots of big dumb rock songs. Half of them are bangers, including the masterpiece Space Truckin (which is dumb as hell and awesome) and half of them are good but pretty forgettable, but they’re all big and dumb and they rock. I would give this a 3 except Space Truckin’ rules so hard it gets a 4. SPACE TRUCKIN’!!!

didn’t realize this was where THE guitar song came from

My cup of tea and have already added the album to my library. Will def be listening to it more frequently

Muy mi estilo de rock, tienen algunos temunes además.

Really great rock album. Powerful guitars. A classic but still somehow sounds modern. Close your eyes and you are in a smoke filled bar in the 70s. Fantastic stuff.

Excellent guitar skills which carried this album

Starting with Highway Star might be the hardest opening an album can have. There are some all timers on here, justifies itself as an important album. As a 1972 metal release it's experimental in a way that's cool but doesn't always work though.

Highway Star is a monster.

I wouldn’t say that I had low expectations, but after being disappointed by Deep Purple In Rock, I wasn’t particularly amped to get Machine Head. Yes, “Smoke On The Water” might have the most iconic riff of all time, if only because of its easiness, and “Highway Star” was fun to play on Guitar Hero back in the day. But what about the rest of the album? I think “Pictures of Home” kind of sold me. Very cool melody. It’s a solid hard rock album, and was a pioneer in the genre (though with LED Zeppelin and Black Sabbath active at the same time, Deep Purple will never quite measure up).

Grappig dat smoke on the water m'n minst favo is

Favorite Track: Highway Star

Killer dad rock

chilliges album. smoke on the water legendary allein wegen dem nintendo game damals

Muito melhor do que o esperado!

Drums, guitars love it, so fastpace can tell they love playing their instruments

8/10 Very good. Exceptional riffery and inventive songs.Perfect length. Textured and always interesting. On the cusp of a 5 star.

for all the cheesy 70s rock this list has given me this is a standout, very enjoyable with some huge songs on here, most notably does not drag or all sound the same like similar albums in the genre

Groovy chill old rock, good instrumental good vocals

smoke on thr waer

An 8.7/10. The first time I heard this, it really blew me away—and it became part of my taste and who I am musically. It just hits. The riffs, the energy, everything feels locked in. Definitely one I genuinely love coming back to.

Me encantó!! TEMAZOS obviously, claramente no iba a decepcionar

Rock classics!! Outside my usual zone of interest but I liked it. Prob would not throw on again if it were just me hanging

The smoke ob the water album i think

Classic 60’s rock. Bluesy,

I can dig

Yup the fuzz

Great stuff, love me some fuzzy riffage

Very good. Enjoyable. But some songs are kinda boring.

It was good but i mainly listen to music while gaming it wasnt that good while doing that bur otherwise its very nostalgic

Great songs, great vocals, great songwriting, great riffs, great everything. Lazy is a phenomenal song that blew me away.

The famous riff to Smoke on the Water alone merits several stars. But, to a non-lover of heavy metal music, this album is actually pretty decent for the most part, primarily a blues-rock album with occasional dips into heavy metal tropes.

Solid hard rock which influenced many. Low 4

Riff based rock music. Good throughout.

This album is pretty fun and captures the rock and roll ethos really well. Smoke on the Water feels like a right of passage for any young rock music fan. From learning that song on guitar, to learning about the history of the song and lore that surrounds it, it feels like it deserves a place in the rock and roll hall of fame. My own personal feelings around this album, aside from the nostalgia factor, feel a bit less favorable. These guys are rockin' out hard but it does feel like it lacks a bit of soul. It's almost like they are making up for some skill by just given er extra hard. I will round up my review based on the importance I feel like this album has but I'm probably being generous.

Algunas canciones buenas, digamos que no me ha super encantado pero si es agradable. no los conocía

solid early rock album. This one was so fun to listen to.

Already a enjoyed Smoke on the Water and Highway Star prior to listening so was pretty excited going into this (especially at 37 minutes long). Very straight forward album, quick and straight to the punch. All killer no filler if you would. Lazy's opening is pretty insane though very cool way to open a track. The story behind this album is also pretty neat, definitely adds to the enjoyment of the record.

Hell yeah.

Some good ole 70s rock! Nothing crazy new or exciting to me here, but enjoyable nonetheless. 7/10

Loved this! Only knew one of the songs, so it was cool to hear some new stuff!

If you want know how Heavy Metal started, this record is the answer. I think this album was the most borrowed/ recorded among my friends

Love Deep Purple, great album culminating in the magnificent Space Truckin.

Meathead rock but enjoyable for sure.

something new, out of my comfort zone. definitely going back2it

Cañero

7/10 I've always felt that Deep Purple were kind of unfortunate to be the slightly forgotten third of the unholy trinity. While Sabbath and Zeppelin managed to maintain their prominance in the decades that followed, it felt like Deep Purple struggled to maintain relevancy in the same way. Perhaps it was the rotating cast of band members, or the lack of prominent personalities like Ozzy and Robert Plant. From relistening to this album, I think it's perhaps that the bands that they inspired managed to nail their sound so well, and develop it so successfully into different forms and styles that, while their influence was strongly felt, many of the bands managed to use the starting point that Deep Purple had built to go on to greater things. There's certainly a lot to like about this record. Strong riffs, some really great drumming and grooves, and some cool bits of production too. It also sounds like they're having a great deal of fun, with solos galore and plenty of opportunities for every band member to flex their considerable talents. Unfortunately, that does result in things sometime becoming a tad self indulgent and bloated, dragging good ideas a little further than they could reasonably be expected to go. You can hear a lot of sounds here that subsequent bands would pick up and the influence of this album is palpable, but it does get a little swamped by the cavalcade of dad rock bands that followed. But that all gets forgiven when gems like Highway Star and Smoke On The Water start to spin. My head is telling me this is a 6, but the influence and importance that you can hear seeping out of the speakers jabs me in the heart and pokes it up a mark. Highway Star - It's a great start to the album. There's a real drive and pace to it, some solid riffs and top quality hooks. The rhythmic beats in the verses are great and it's a really coherent tone. Nice solo work in there too. It sounds a little cliché now, but that's because so many bands came after Deep Purple. Maybe I'm A Leo - Nice swagger and groove to this. The drumming is possibly the highlight here, played with feel and variety but never losing flow. It's not got as many of the engaging riffs or hooks as the opener, but there's still as solid vibe. It does meander a little during the solo sections, which is a shame, but it's still a good listen if you sit back and roll with the groove. Pictures Of Home - Things are driving along a bit more again now. There are some more good riffs, but it still doesn't feel as hooked up and engaging as Highway Star. There's a slightly proggy, psychedelic edge to this in places and the solos are pretty fun, but as with the previous track, perhaps a little meandering. You can definitely hear the echoes of this sound in music that would follow, but while the bones of that are there, it perhaps feels a tiny bit underdeveloped. Never Before - This is another great groove and in places sounds really 80s, despite being from 1972. There are moments that are really cool, particularly from a production point of view, with some of the phasing effects of particular note. They don't necessarily manage to fully grip on to a solid vocal hook though. The solos here feel a bit tighter and are probably the better parts on this one. Smoke On The Water - Ah, the most well known riff of all time? The one that everyone learns to play within about 10 seconds of picking up a guitar. It's a fantastic riff partly because it's so simple, but it also has great feel. The chorus has such a great vocal hook too. The groove of this track is not what people remember it for, but it's got a really funky edge to it. Again, there's some cool production in here in places, and it's got a great, coherent sound. They love making sure they wedge a guitar and organ solo in wherever possible and I guess that's part of the fun, but it does make things a little formulaic. Quality track though. Lazy - A nice Psychedelic start and then it's a slow burn until we get into some nice widdly grooving. There's good pace to it and it sounds like they're having a load of fun with this. It's got a pretty irresistible toe-tapper of a feel and despite it's length, it remains pretty engaging throughout. Is it a bit self indulgent? Yes. Does that make it bad? No. It's a pretty enjoyable, bluesy ride, and they even find time for a harmonica solo! Why not? Space Truckin' - Some great riffs in this. Again, it feels a bit cliché dad rock in places, like something from the "Top Gear Top 40" or some such CD, but it feels a tad unfair to tarnish Deep Purple with the sheer amount of bands that followed in their wake. It does get a bit shrieky in places, but the weight and drive is pretty undeniable.

Está muy bueno este rock de antes. Increíble la bateria, los solos y la voz!

Highway Star rocks so fuckin hard. So does most of this album.

I didn't have time to listen to this album fully but i still really like it. I think it was cool that there were a lot of instrumental as well other than only text. I would very much like to revisit this album again.

Goede gitaren

Space Trucking is such an underrated track. Not full of bangers, but a really solid mid-70s rock/metal album.

So much more fun than I expected. I thought they were dad rock (maybe they are and I'm just into that now). The sound was much more metal than I expected. Love how thick and theatrical the sound is. Excellent to drive to. That epic first track is so good

classic

True hard Rock really doesn't get much better than this. Heavy and memorable. Favorite track: Highway Star

Metal relativament chill, bastant guapo, no sabia que smoke in the water era d'aquest grup

I expected to hate this tbh. Great guitar solos, good vibe overall. 3.5

Deep Purple recorded Machine Head in pretty extraordinary circumstances. in an attempt to create more of a "live" feel in their studio work (and as a possible bid for a double album with one studio LP and one live LP), they took a mobile recording studio owned by The Rolling Stones to the Montreux Casino in Switzerland. the double-album thing didn't pan out, for reasons that were immortalized in "Smoke on the Water"; when I was first learning how to play guitar about 15 years ago, that was still the song pretty much everyone learned as their first riff. I have no idea if the kids even know what this song is nowadays. the simplicity of that riff is indicative of Deep Purple's reverence for the fundamentals of rock 'n' roll, which they nail pretty expertly across these seven songs. far from being a boilerplate hard rock album, however, the band sees fit to incorporate blues jams ("Maybe I'm a Leo"), proto-metal power chord chugging, lengthy instrumental diversions ("Highway Star") and some seriously involved drumming from Ian Paice. Ian Gillan's lead vocals were starting to feel a lot more developed as well! the one complaint I have comes down to the production; I feel like the mix is begging for that Led Zeppelin kind of heaviness and loudness, but instead it feels unusually boxed in. that being said, Ritchie Blackmore's riffs and (especially) solos are some of the best I've come across from the British hard rock boom, which more than covers the difference. light 8/10.

This album just rocks tops to bottom and it has a song called Space Truckin'. Excellent album.

Just a great, solid rock record.

If only everything on this album was like the neo-classical space-rock of Highway Star. When they do more generic blues it passes over me. But Smoke on the Water, Lazy and the B-side (When a Blind Man Cries) which I'll include here as it is included on some version are all great. If only the lyrics caught up with the music.

I feel like I've listened to this before and not been so enamored, but this time I'm really enjoying it. Really heavy parts, strong vocals, driving rhythm section. Kinda wish I had it on louder... I'll just put it on my bigger speakers. Yes. This is good. It slows down a bit at the end and I wasn't a big fan of the last track, but highway star through to space trucking were very enjoyable. Some lovely rock organ playing which seems to be a lost art these days.

épico álbum pensé que iba a ser un rock mas pesado pero ~me agrada buenísimas guitarras y pianitos

3 on first listen, 4 on second. Overall it’s pretty good

This is Deep Purple at their peak. Their three biggest hits are on here, including the famous (or infamous?) beginner guitar tune ‘Smoke on the Water’. I’m a big Deep Purple fan, and this is a very solid record, but I prefer their live stuff to the studio albums. Their live performances are always a little bit funkier and have more energy to them. This is a solid album regardless of the distinction between live and studio, a 4/5 for me.

I regret to inform you that Dad Rock really does rock. 3.5

Very nice album

3.5 / 5

Awesome drum triplets

Killer killer early hard rock record! Fun to revisit this for the first time since I was a kid.

Enjoying this a lot more than the live album. Highway Star is great. I only knew Smoke on the Water before this

That rocked in a cheesy old way but also in a timeless rock way.

Beats 8/10 Fav song: Lazy Not the biggest fan of the lead singer

First, the elephant in the room: "Smoke on the Water". A legendary yet simple riff made into an otherwise-mediocre song about them being unable to record at a venue because it caught fire. The rest of the album is an excellent exposition of early-70s rock including some amazing guitar and Hammond organ work.

Surprisingly badass. And not just the song that Beavis and Butthead love.

I think I liked it better than “Made In Japan”, but probably not enough to bump this up to a 5

I'll admit I had previously dismissed Deep Purple as just another run of the mill rock band from the 70's/80's. A couple hits but nothing with any major staying power from my end. After now listening to a couple albums and talking with a friend who is a big Deep Purple fan I have a much better appreciation for them. Machine Head is a really strong album. It's a great example of hard rock sounds that paved the way for the heavy metal genre without being too aggressive. Smoke On The Water is a well known hit but I never knew the full story about the Montreux Casino fire so that's a cool bit of trivia to add to the whole thing. The album is solid pretty much all the way down and holds up really well 50+ years into its life. All in all I really enjoyed Machine Head and might need to take a Deep-er look at the rest of their catalog at some point. Preferably this will be on vinyl at my buddy's house in the near future. Color me impressed by this one. 3.57 stars

smoke on the water was obviously good but the rest of the album was cohesive and I liked the vibe

wow I forgot about highway star. That whole album was awesome, really cool moments esp in organ and bass. A cohesive work

This was a lot more relaxed comparatively with Deep Purple In Rock, but still energetic and anthemic nonetheless. Just like ...In Rock it has some of the most unique guitar riffs I've ever heard in my life, Ritchie Blackmore must worship the devil or something to come up with all these riffs. This album had a lot more consistent high than ...In Rock, but that album had more drastic highs and lows. Highlight Song/s: "Maybe, I'm a Leo", "Highway Star" and "Smoke on the Water"

pretty sick album 3.5

I know that a lot of the elements on this album now feel like a parody of itself, but to hear it in its entire day reminded me how much this album must’ve hit when it first came out and how influential elements of it were in rock ‘n’ roll after.

A great A-side but getting worse at the B-side

Jooo gaaf! Vet om weer eens een album helemaal te luisteren. Smoke on the water luister ik nooit meer omdat het zo grijs gedraaid is, maar stiekem toch wel vet hoor.

World’s most played riff? Doet me denken toen ik 18 was en met coole boys omging. Logisch dat ie in deze lijst staat

Killer riffs.

Had no idea smoke on the water was on this album

My favourite Deep Purple album

me encanto!!!!! me guarde el disco. discaso. todo me gusto.

This was pretty good. Enjoyed it

What fun

Zappa mention

Dad music but good

I loved this record as a teenager. Nowadays the hits don’t hit quite like they used to, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed some of the deeper album cuts like “Pictures of Home”. It’s still a great “hard rock” album largely due to Gillian’s supreme hard rock voice and was important to the development of heavy metal particularly due to Blackmore’s classical influences. I think I like IN ROCK a bit better though.

"Another" hard rock album, but this one is one of the better ones in the list. The mixing is delicious and smooth, and the songwriting is for the most part, straightforward in a good way, and effective. I am withholding from a 5 since while this is a hard rock classic, it's got a bit too many fillers for me to be able to play this back to back without feeling a need to reach to the "next" button. The highs are high but the rest is pretty meh.

I feel like Deep Purple is often overlooked as a mainstay of rock radio and history. (In my mind and for society.) Occasionally I'll see an article that lists them in the top 10 of rock bands and I think... Really? And then I take the time to listen to an album like this and I get it. They really made some solid music. All the parts fit together well and it's quite good. Great riffs, solid bass and drums (even the 2 mini drum solo bits are fun.) and that all-over-the-place keyboard is awesome! How many 7 song albums have 3 Great hits? PLUS the other songs are pretty good on their own, too! Now, this firmly sounds like a rock band/album from the 70's and I don't think I'll be popping it on again without prompting. But I'm glad I got reminded oof how good they really were. This is quality rock! Is it influential? Did it change Rock? I don't think so. But, it is a decent album to show off and teach someone about the basics of rock music from "back in the day" I'm going all out and giving it a 4 today!

Good heavy Rock Classic.

Dobar, kompaktan, nema nekih skipova, jak vibe classic rock

Everyone has heard the riff, but I've never actually heard Smoke on the water before...

Sick riffs

Terrific

Possibly the first time I’ve listened to this album end to end but a great example of early British heavy metal. John Lord’s Hammond B3 stabs and probes keep this moving on at a fine pace and Richie Blackmore’s guitar solos provide some very nice lead lines. Gets the blood moving in a morning. 4

Bästa sortens rock! Inte hört mer av Deep Purple än Smoke on the water tidigare (tror jag), men det ska det bli ändring på i framtiden! Stark fyra!

rökare på rökare! min inre rockgubbe vaknar till liv med det här projektet!

Man, that album was amazing. But harmonica on Lazy ruined the perfect score

Big dumb rock and I love it. Much has been said about Smoke on the Water and its riff, but that guitar solo is so melodic and tasteful. Blackmore may be an early shredder. The difference for me is compared to van Halen, Blackmore’s playing sounds like it’s so much work. It’s so visceral. 4/5.

Les solos de guitare sont exceptionnels ! Super album, pas grand chose à redire, c'est excellement bien exécuté ! C'est maîtrisé de bout en bout. Incroyable à écouter et à réécouter ! Note : 4 À réécouter : Oui

Vraiment pas mal, construction musicale intéressante 👌

I already listened to Deep Purple in Rock. I think I like that one better, but this is a really good album still. Blackmore on guitar is amazing. This is one of my favorite types of music done very well. I would definitely give this another listen.

That's the rock we're all talking about..

Band cardine dell’hard rock britannico, e questo è uno dei loro album migliori

Nice hard rock haha! Smoke on the water intro is a classic

Holy soooocksssss!!!

7.0/10

There was a time when I listened to this. Really only remember the hits. Highway Star and Smoke on the Water. Guess we’ll see how I like it now. This is fun and rocks. Highway Star is a great rocking opener with Awesome guitars. That solo! After that, there’s a defined heavy metal/hard rock sound throughout the rest of the first half, with guitar riffs and solos dominating the sound. This all sounds like stuff Jack Black would love, and I’m not knocking it. Smoke in the Water is a classic and rightfully so. Great track. One thing this album has is just great guitar solos on every track. Lazy just rocks. Really good. I think this is a solid well deserved 4. Part of me was pushing it to a 5, but don’t know if it gets there for me.

Solid rock album. Terrible album cover

banger

Overall a nice sounding album. I enjoyed the funkier and groovier tracks so it didnt become too stale. Good listen.

Great rock album from seventies giants

Loved it

Classique. Rock n Roll, let’s go.

I liked this very much I remember learning smoke on the water on guitar when I was 7. I quit my lessons soon after :)

A rock classic. 4/5

So much better than their In Rock. Band sounds tighter and the songs are on another level. I was expecting a new producer in the credits, but it turns out they self produce their own albums. In Rock was only the second record they self produced, and it showed. Three legendary tracks on this album, those alone carry Machine Head to a strong rating. Rest of the album is made up of strong, quality songs that hold their own. This is solid rock and roll, no frills, well done hard rock and roll music.

Moins inspirant que d’autre hard rock des années 70. Genre donne moi ledzep et black sabbath avant!

Hard charging classic rock.

I think most everyone is familiar with "Smoke On The Water", as it's probably one of the iconic rock songs of all time. Outside of that, one other song was familiar to me, but the rest of the album was not. This album is exactly what you want in a rock album - classic guitar riffs, lots of guitar solos, and pounding drums throughout. The lyrics aren't deep and aren't going to blow you away, but the music itself is what makes this album a classic. Definitely worthy of the list!

I've never listened to much deep purple, outside their biggest hits. But really enjoyed this album, the drums, bass and guitar are sick, especially love the guitar and the bluesy solos, I have something new to learn

This is music to listen while cruising down the highway, windows down and the volume way up. It's a very specific situation that this abum thrives in but I still really enjoyed it. I have a very vivid memory of playing Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 and playing "Smoke on the Water" as a Rabbid, so of course, the song is very iconic to me. I also enjoyed Never Before, they intended it to be their hit single and I get why, it's very catchy.

Wow this was an amazing listen. I personally do not listen to rock, but this album made me dance and put on a mini performance while working. One thing I appreciate from rock is hearing the instruments as if you're at a live concert. My favourite songs has to be Highway star, smoke on the water, lazy and when a blind man cries. Rock on 🤘

Ты какую группу уважаешь? 8/10

Really fun album. I enjoyed this! Highway star is peak. And I can just here myself playing smoke on the water riff for the first time on my shitty acoustic guitar.

Really good album, Smoke on the Water is the overplayed song unfortunately when there is a lot really good tracks on here

smoke on the water was probably one of the earliest rock songs i was shown and liked when i was really young so i knew i was gonna have a good time with this

What a banger! Including one of the most iconic guitar riffs og all time!

As classic as classic rock gets! Absolutely badass blues rock riffs, crushing distorted keyboard tones, Ian Paice on drums, and nut-crushing high screaming vocals. The only drawback to Machine Head is that it's so influential that it sounds a bit rudimentary and a bit cliche with songs like Smoke On The Water. It's obvious that in the decades following its release, rock bands have built upon the sound, making it deeper, better, and more complex.

Nothing like 70s rock to put you in a good mood

this is almost certainly the best Deep Purple album in this book and also a classic rock record. some of the tracks do feel mildly bloated though.

This album finishes much stronger than it starts. I initially had it pegged as a solid 3, but when “Lazy” kicked in, I had to rethink that pretty quickly. By the end, it feels more like a 3.5, maybe even a 4 on a good day.

So many guitar solos... Smoke on water so cool

Overall an enjoyable album. You can tell what the singles were though because the other songs were so forgettable in comparison Smoke on the Water is the obvious big hit here, but I loved Highway Star. I've not heard that song in years, didn't realise it was by Deep Purple! 4 ⭐️

why is the worst song on the album the most well known lol

+ bass solo, noen jævlig fete riffs - litt lav energi til tider liker litt mer futt i rocken, noen litt chorny cord progressions i ny og ne kanskje 3/5

"Highway Star" has some sick and shreddy guitar and really strong bass - always such good early 70's rock. I didn't know Pictures of Home but that song was good and mad me recognize that Deep Purple has like, a Diet Genesis to them. I'm not sure if it's the anthemic, arena-sounding vocals and driving guitar or what, but I'm getting big Genesis vibes despite the lack of prog. Smoke on the Water, though overplayed, is awesome and has a perfect transition into Lazy, which was mixed in a way that as very ahead of its time. I'm taking big advantage of the fancy headphones I just bought and this was a great testament to their sound quality. I felt like I was levitating through the whole first half of the song, esp those first 30-60 seconds. Also I felt that realll hard when they said "you're lazy, you just stay in bed." Sonically, Space Truckin' is fine but the lyrics are amazing. I miss the space race era of space fascination a la Deep Purple, Queen, and David Bowie. I mean I'm sure this song is about psychedelics but that's fine. With lyrics like "everynaut would dance and sway, we got music in our solar system" and "we had a lot of luck on Venus, we always had a ball on Mars, we're meeting all the groovy people, we've rocked the milky way so far," the hope for the future and grooviness of space travel is palpable. This is a good record that I only knew two tracks from (Highway Star and Smoke on the Water) but really enjoyed listening to the whole way through. 4/5. Standout tracks: Highway Star Lazy

Good album, the basis of heavy metal and harder rock, possibly. Fun songs to listen to especially when lifting, great guitar work from Ritchie Blackmore, kind of a pioneer of shred all the way back in 1972. Really liked Highway Star and also Pictures of Home

Some nice heavy metal here! Smoke on the Water is the standout but some good guitar and drums here. Plus the singer ain’t half bad either. Good stuff. 7.5/10

8/10 Reopened Deep Purple

hella good. not really my type of music but i loved it lol

I actually don't know if I'd ever heard this one in full before, but yah know? Pretty damn good! I'm not as high on Deep Purple as a lot of other folks, but this one feels pretty undeniable (and I definitely prefer it to *In Rock*). The two hits deserve all their praise, but "Maybe I'm a Leo" was the big discovery for me on first listen. 4/5

Pretty solid album. Recognisable songs beyond Smoke on the Water. Yep, decent

Great album, some classic DP

This album is good. It's the kind of album that grows on you as you listen to it. The instrumental sections are long but well performed and don't feel like they stay past their worth. I'd be happy to revisit this album. It's unique in it's genre but don't go so far from it that it's completely foreign. It's a solid middle ground. I can see it being quite enjoyable on relistens. 4.0/5

70er Jahre Rock mit Metall-Einflüssen. Allein schon wegen "Smoke on the water" hörenswert. 4/5

Strong 3 tracks in the beginning!!

very rocky, absolute classic.

Loved the guitar and the progression of each song.

Favoritt sanger: Smoke on the Water, Lazy

Surprisingly great

9/10 It’s been a while since I’ve listened to this album, & yeah, it still kicks ass- especially playing bass along to it, Roger Glover’s lines are so damn tricky. Favorite song: Highway star Least favorite: Space truckin’

Solid dad rock. I know it's overplayed but Smoke on the Water still goes. I grew up with the CD and I still rate it high.

Lots of fun, classic feel. A bit cheesy at times but great

hell yeah

Really good bridge between Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. Awesome bluesy guitar riffs and high energy vocal performances. My least favorite track is Highway Star, mostly because I hate songs about cars. Smoke on the Water is iconic, but not the best on the album. Lazy is probably my favorite here. 8/10

Low 4, super solid rock blueprint

Early heavy rock/metal sound, some good listens on a few of the songs but some of the other ones were not as good as a listen if I’m being honest. The not so good ones just felt quite random like it was the band just messing about rather than an actual written song. Certain parts of songs when they were good, they were GOOD but then there were other parts in the same song which just weren’t for me. Sometimes in these songs I liked I felt the instrumentals went on for slightly too long killing the momentum of the song. I feel like if the songs were more refined and slightly condensed it would improve it for me. The good parts, I mean some fantastic guitar riffs, especially for its time it's impressive and well done. However, whilst the instrumentals are the focus and the highlight here I feel like the lyrics still could have provided a bit more substance as they were very simple and repetitive in parts. That’s why my standout songs selections are ‘Smoke on the water’, ‘Highway star’ and ‘When a blind man cries’ as they appear a little more refined and less random. Whilst this sounds like an overly negative review, on the whole I did like listening to this album and think it is iconic so a worthy addition to 1001 albums but for me it only just scrapes its way into the 4-star bracket.

One of the great things about me going through this 1001 albums list is that you give albums a go that you would have just avoided otherwise. In this case, this really exceeded my expectations. I thought Deep Purple was just soulless boomer rock, this album is much more than that clearly. Genuinely interesting and polished arrangements across the board.

𝘔𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘥 is classic hard rock delivered with precision, grit, and a surprising sense of momentum. Even without relying on its most overplayed hit, the album stands strong — but I can’t resist mentioning the riff that everyone on earth knows: 𝗱𝘂𝘂𝗻-𝗱𝘂𝘂𝗻-𝗱𝘂𝘂𝗻… 𝗱𝘂𝘂𝗻-𝗱𝘂𝘂𝗻-𝗱𝘂𝘂𝘂𝘂𝗻. Beyond that iconic moment, the record shows the band at full power: Ritchie Blackmore playing with a cutting clarity and a sense of controlled fire, Jon Lord’s Hammond roaring like a second guitar, and Ian Paice driving everything with effortless intensity. It’s lean, heavy, and endlessly replayable — a reminder of how tight and inventive Deep Purple could be at their peak.

i'll pull out my guitar and play smoke on the water for my girlfriend later but i could not believe how much i enjoyed this album. the first 2 tracks have heavy solos that are both technically impressive and super fun to listen to and despite the length of the tracks, the overall album does not wear out its welcome at any point. suddenly the metalhead is me?

This was a very enjoyable classic rock album! Catchy melodies and fun guitar solos. I liked the first half of the album more than the second, it really kept my attention but I still think it was an overall good experience. Light 4/5

Dad had this album. We listed to it quite a bit as kids. Still a good album to this day.

Rock clásico, del legendario

Lazy > Smoke On The Water

Thought it was a pretty good hard rock record and I’m not usually a fan of that sort of thing

Var ikke den her på Rock Band?

Positiv overraskelse. Ganske poppete.

Solid hard rock stuff

It's not my favourite riff ever, but it is the greatest riff ever. The rest of the album is also stupendously great - who needs a second guitar when you've got Jon Lord? Roger fucking Glover, by the way! Favourite tracks: Highway Star, Lazy, Pictures of Home, Space Trucking

Solid 4, I didn’t dislike it and I even saved one track and it wasn’t Smoke on the water. I don’t get what the fuss is all about. Maybe I’m a Leo has a nice riff. This is the kind of rock that is inspired by blues and you can hear it in the softness of the electric guitar.

gostei de ouvir o álbum que tem smoke on the water. é um bom álbum, certamente um dos clássicos do rock. achei que não ia gostar tanto, mas é bom

Feels about as hard as hard rock can get before it becomes metal. Dig the sci-fi stuff

Really good Classic Rock album, especially Smoke on the Water and Lazy. 4 stars or B+.

Kick ass album

I think I like Rainbow more, but this a pretty solid hard rock album. Highway Star is my favorite song, and it has a really great solo in it. Maybe I'm a Leo didn't really do anything for me, but the rest of the album was good. Obviously Smoke On The Water is both classic and overplayed, but it's still enjoyable. Lazy was really fun and bluesy, kinda spaced out song. My favorite riff was in Space Truckin though. That was a really groovy riff. 8/10.

Loved it. Big heavy grooves galore. 4/5

++: Highway Star, Maybe I'm a Leo, Pictures of Home, Never Before, Lazy, Space Truckin' +: Smoke on the Water 9,5/10

first listen some GNARLY tone

Haven't heard it since I was very young. surprised how well it's held up.

Best album from the session isnt even on the album. High 7s

cool riff but not rl my type

8/10 Son préf : when a blind man cries

7/10 Chanson pref : Space Turkin'

Could be a five. Classic rock.

ну це ж класіка!!! але зараз я б не слухала його постійно, тільки під настій

Has highway Star and smoke on the water.

I feel like I’m on a motorcycle in a movie scene. 3 minutes into this album! Lol PICTURES OF HOME- 10ish min into this album and why is it kinda good? HELLO? MAYBE I AM A LEO IDK The excitement died down for me towards the end of the album.

There were some pretty good tracks on this

Good riffs but not for me.

Wasn't sure what I was walking into, but FINALLY after years of hearing people play that song on bass for years and no one telling me wtf the song was, I now know it's 'Smoke on the Water' and my millennial ass can rest in peace. Overall, decent album 👌

I enjoyed this one. Some of the songs went on for a while but Smoke on the Water deserves its flowers

Very hit or miss song to song for me

The instrumental are incredible, Besides smoke on the water nothing else hit for me - appreciate the album though

Energetic songs, fun to listen. 😁

Blew my expectations away, gripping from start to finish. So many great riffs beyond “Smoke on the Water!”

7/10 Favorite: Highway Star

Great album. I should listen more to Deep Purple.

i can see myself listening to this when im old lol

A brillant cacophony of brillant instrumental sounds and lyrical perfection, everything worked so well and seamlessly. A Great Album as a way to feel picked up. Very Dramatic and Awakening in the right ways. Very recognisable tracks but I had never known who had actually played them. Would listen again.

Alright, ok, I can see how I had to hear this one. I figured I was going to hate it, but I didn't.

Big fan of this :)

Great riffs

I wasn’t a fan of the last Deep Purple album I got, I found Gillan’s shrieking unpleasant. Thankfully he kept it to a minimum on this album.

A very good album that includes hits like "Highway Star", "Maybe I'm a Leo" and the one I don't love after listening to it to death, "Smoke On The Water".

Montreux casino burns down, smoke on the waters drifts. Frank Zappa, sings to the ends of the earth, and back around.

great riffs

Enjoyed more than expected!

Usually this type of hard blues rock sounds super dated to me. But not this album - it still captures a really great energy and is a really fun listen.

A True classic hard rock album that I have listened to over and over again.

Rock on, Space Truckers

The iconic hard rock album.

Short and sweet! Two classics, including Smoke on the Waters iconic guitar riff. The rest of the album is solid heavy rock, feels like an authentic version of KISS

Almost identical to my feelings/review of the last Deep Purple album "Deep Purple In Rock"...to me, the main draw is Ritchie Blackmore. As a guitarist, hes a 5/5, some of the music is a little Spinal Tap-ish (they were the "world's loudest band", at least pre-Led Zeppelin), but also highly influential and seems to bridge psych and heavy metal. "Highway Star"....what a song....they smoke on that. "Smoke on the Water" is played out but cool if you can listen to it with fresh ears..."Space Truckin" is funny but also badass. I enjoy them and this album, but would get why someone wouldn't.

w ritchie

Old school rock with some classic songs. Very bluesy vibe overall.

This is definitely as classic rock as it gets. Deep Purple have a sound that is the culmination of so many of the “heavier” bands from that time. It’s like part Zep, part Cream, part Sabbath, and it goes on. Somehow they found a way to be as influential with their sound. Hit after hit on this album though; will listen to many times Biggest Hit - Space Truckin Biggest Miss ( if I had to choose) - Pictures of Home Biggest Surprise - Lazy

Hey man, it's that heavy 70s sound as imagined in commercials and the drifting dreams of the media landscape. You take your classic rock and run a driven Hammond organ alongside it while the dimed guitar and bass approach metal riffs without fully crossing over 'cause they've got to continue to sell — wrap all that in a bow of lyrics about highways, driving, spaceships, fires, lovin' and the obsessions of post-hippie youth culture. As a kid decades later, I remember nothing but disdain for Deep Purple, sneering at Smoke on the Water even while learning how to play it on the bass. Revisiting Machine Head now, I hear far more in it that speaks to me than I expected. The record sits closer to the music I enjoy than music I don't. So, give Machine Head a little grace and you might not blow a gasket. Maybe it doesn't blow your mind and you think it's only okay. But man, there are stretches where I can practically hear Iron Maiden, Metallica, Monster Magnet and Clutch (maybe even Queens of the Stone Age) forming in the vapor...

Man I guess I should've paid more attention to Deep Purple beyond just "Smoke On The Water", this album rocks. Definitely of the same ilk as Led Zeppelin. Enjoyed every track. Other standouts are leadoff "Highway Star" and the slow build instrumental "Lazy".

Very good. Driving music

This album is juicy. It has heft and depth. It's a heavy fuzzy ride back to the 70s. The guitars are crushing and the drum beats are tight. It's still a fun album! Highlights are "Highway Star" "Pictures of Home" and "Smoke on the Water" with a shoutout to "Lazy" which is a semi-instrumental journey that I was having a really good time with by the end. Overall I'd give this a 4, it's fun and got some classics on-board that still hit hard today.

Excelente! Pra mim é um sólido 4,5 mas ciente da nota do rosqueiro E, vou de 4 👁️👁️

An epic proto-hard rock album. Smoke On The Water never gets old, and it's only one of the many killer tracks featured here. I know it's considered their best work by many people, and it's probably technically true, but I didn't enjoy it as much as Deep Purple in Rock, though. It just doesn't speak to me the same way - maybe because they dropped the slightly psychedelic vibe and replaced it by something closer to blues, or maybe because it's more "rock" and less "metal", if that makes sense. Overall I find it tamer and cleaner than In Rock, with vocals that feel a bit less powerful. Still a great record I'd listen without hesitation any day of the week ! 8/10

I haven’t listen to this since I was 13 which I think is the best age to listen to this. If I was being a bit harsh it would be 3 stars but gets an extra one because it’s also one of my dad’s favourite albums and I remember it being one of the very first albums I listened to.

Im not a classic rock radio guy. I’m more Portishead/Radiohead than Motörhead/Machine Head. In spite of that, this was unexpectedly great Had me headbanging and air guitaring round my kitchen like I was Jack Black.

Good stuff.

I've already had their live album. This is much better. Highway Star was a ton of fun, great guitar shredding part in there as well. Similar with Pictures Of Home. Maybe I'm A Leo and Never Before were solid. And then that Smoke On The Water riff hits you. It was my pick for best song for the live album, and no surprises, it's my pick for this too. Just hits you and gets you pumped up. Lazy had some killer guitar work, really enjoyed that. Space Truckin' was a nice little romp. And they ended on a great song, When A Blind Man Cries was a wonderful power ballad. Tons of fun, really enjoyed this album. Best song: Smoke On The Water

Amazing album by an amazing band. Fireball is just a bit better though.

Great Songs: Maybe I'm a Leo, Smoke on the Water Good Songs: Highway Star, Pictures of Home, Never Before, Lazy, Space Truckin' Mid Songs: Bad Songs:

Wow, I loved this one, the solos were amazing 🔥🔥🔥 4.5⭐

While this benefits from being a little more concise than In Rock, I also think it lacks some of that album's proto-metal muscle. But there's still penty of hard rock swagger, and the riffs and solos are great. There are 3 all time genre classics here: Highway Star, Smoke On The Water, and Space Truckin'. Smoke On The Water has one of the most iconic, recognizable riffs *ever*. But honestly, this album is pretty consistent. I don't have a lot to say, it's another Deep Purple album which added to the foundation of hard rock and heavy metal. I prefer In Rock, this this has plenty of its own merit.

Speeeeed King

Solid early 70s hard rock. A few monster songs.

Awesome album

Very close to a 5 - great record. Paced well, the sound is fantastic with a very tight unit playing here and some cool stuff like the organ. Smoke on the Water is probably only the fifth or sixth best track which is saying something!

Classic!

Deep Purple is a perfectly named band. The guitar, bass, and organ combine for a deep, even ominous sound, but just as often provide colorful, soaring solos and jams. The drum fills add even more energy to an already hard driving sound. I just really enjoy this music. I recently listened (and re-listened) to “In Rock,” the other studio album on the 1001 list. Each features a band that is in the zone. This album is only slightly more controlled and able to produce a single (“Smoke”) or three. Each of these albums hovers around 4.5/5 for me. Since I rounded up to 5 on “In Rock,” I’ll round down to 4 on this one, with its only deficit being its lack of lyrical depth. But that’s not to say it isn’t a great joy ride.

Gone are the over the top shrieks (musical ones) and broodish jams of At Rock. They are replaced with tighter and mine anthemic work. The trouble is that I can’t tell whether the move is an improvement because this bad does interesting things with each. Lyrically, I am still struggling with them, but the entire genre struggles, so I’m a little more tolerant this time around. Additionally, always keep an ear tuned to drums and bass. The guitar work is solid, but the support work with bass and drums is exceptional.

On the first listen, I was kinda out of it, and it didn't really speak to me. However, three or four songs deep I started to understand it. While it is true so many of the songs run long, the sounds are just so fun to deal with and I feel like I'm at a jam session in a garage feeling the moment. Smoke by the water is an obvious highlight, whilst lazy also speaks to me quite fondly.

Apart from Jon Lord's fannying around with proggy keyboard runs this is a stand out piece of rock.

It's pretty cool for the era, and inspired a massive genre.

Rambly rock, I like the organ

Smoke on the Water!!!

A lot of fun riffs, and very high energy. Metal has come a long, long way since Deep Purple's time - but the foundations of what makes metal so great are all here. There is a grungy sound across the album, but it doesn't take away from how precise the instruments are being played. It's clearer to see the link between Blues > Rock > Metal with songs like "Maybe I'm A Leo," which sounds insanely groovy but still heavy.

I liked it. Good vibes on my end.

Fun listen.

Classis rock as it should be, great bass
