8/10 Favourite: Lazy Least Favourite: Smoke on the Water

Great album .

First Listen. 4 I actually listened to this one a couple of times and it grew on me. I liked the organ and guitar with octave effects. It certainly has a heavy metal sound, but is much closer to blues than Black Sabbath. Favorite songs: Highway Star, Lazy, Space Truckin'

Good early bluesy hard rock. I struggle a bit to say much more about this, and that's probably why it's a 4 and not a 5.

Classic as it gets

Some seriously cool songs on this record. Particularly like space truckin' and of course smoke on the water.

Highway Star and Smoke on The Water are bangers. Fun album.

Coulda sworn we already had this one, but I guess that was the live in Japan album. Not that I'm complaining Deep Purple is one of those no nonsense classic rock bands that churned out solid jam after solid jam. This album does not disappoint. Loads of crusty guitar, soulful organ, and tasty jams. The album is bookended by two propulsive road-trip anthems: Highway Star and Space Truckin'. And the internals, while less energetic, jam in their own rights. I'll say that at times, the middle tracks (outside of Smoke on the Water) felt a bit like filler; however, the organ work often elevated things out of the mundane (looking at you Maybe I'm a Leo). Hard to give anything other than a 4. Low as it may be this is solid.

Another masterpiece by Deep Purple. Kicks off so hot with Highway Star. Then just rocks its way through to Lazy, which I have never heard, and is a baller instrumental. Space Truckin is a fun ass way to end. Side note, a random Deep Purple song came on afterwards called Burn and that was an incredible song. Not quite enough gas to give this a 5 because a couple songs weren't quite it but a very high 4

Instantly recognize 2 songs on this and they are absolute jams. Highway Star just has it all. Honestly most of these songs do. Smoke on the Water is one of the most recognizable songs out there and for good reason. Just a fun one all around. Easy 4.

Decent

4.5. Solid, enjoyable hard rock classic with killer playing.

A classic among classic rock albums. 4.5 stars

Really good album. "Space Truckin" is the best thing here, but "Smoke on the Water" and "Highway Star" are cool too. 4 stars.

Better than Coldplay

Groovy

Surprised me.

I’m glad I got this one after Made In Japan on this list, because that live album really gave me a new appreciation for Deep Purple after sleeping on them for many years. Machine Head is fantastic. The vocals don’t stand out to me, but there is some seriously fantastic guitar playing on almost every song. The guitar leads stand out even more on the live versions, but Machine Head is a consistent listen with some killer standout tracks like Highway Star, Space Truckin’, and of course Smoke On The Water.

Dad music? Sure it was - I grew up with this album and it introduced me to the world of metal (starting with Black Sabbath, thanks again dad!), then the NWOBHM, culminating in the Bay Area thrash of Metallica, Anthrax, and Slayer. 4/5 - Machine Head, Metal Head! \m/

One of my gateway drugs to metal

Another discovery through doing this. I knew Smoke on the Water but none of their other stuff. This is really enjoyable. Would listen again

Best Song: Highway Star. Something about that rumbling rhythm really does make this song feel well suited for a highway. Worst Song: Never Before. This feels a little too chipper. Like they're trying to get pop radio play or something. Overall: Such an original sound. So crunchy, the piano adds a lot. The whole album is better, and more fun, than I had imagined it would be.

Highway star is such a great opening track Drum solo intro on “Pictures of Home” goes so hard Why didn’t I know that Smoke on The Water had a really good bass line??? Also I really like the mix! Each instruments’ role is super clear Long live heavy metal \m/

Had low/mid expectations of dreary dad rock but this is a proper album. Sounds great with some serious riffage and soloing. Not fantastic for every minute, but an enjoyable listen.

This ripped just as much as I wanted it to

75/100. Smoke on the Water does most of the heavy lifting here, a track so massive it can sometimes overshadow the rest of the album. Decently good, but not all of it hits the same legendary heights.

Good ol' fashioned dirty bluesy hard rock.

Ok, so this surprised me. All I had ever heard of deep purple before was smoke on the water, but this album shreds. Will definitely be digging into their back catalogue.

Decent album - a bit of head banging rock combined with white guy funk

I was thinking from the start that this sounded exactly like something out of school of rock - then smoke on the water came on Opening track a banger prolly my favorite Even for someone that doesn't listen to rock this album is real good B tier

Classic Heavy Rock!!

It has "Smoke on the Water", n'uff said.

An absolute classic. Great listen.

Great and memorable guitar riffs and solos throughout, very good album

a classic, timeless rock album with great range across the genre. 🤘

Banger.

Great guitar, enjoyable singing, and a great 70's rock album. Its not something I will go back to, but for a one time listen its doing a really good job. 4/5.

Natuurlijk kende ik smoke on the water, maar vond de rest eigenlijk ook wel best lekker klinken! Rock on freaky bro

SPACE TRUCKIN'!!!!!

ROCK N'ROLL RACING!! Plein de bonne démesure. On entend souvent l'expression "musique de drogué". Ici c'est plutôt musique d'alcoolique.

Overall: 8/10 This album opens with such a huge banger that the next couple of songs didn't leave much of an impression on me. With that being said, the second half is a masterpiece. The guitar work is what impresses me the most, but I also love that organ. It adds such an interesting flavour to their music. I think more hard rock bands should include organ in their music. Fav Song: Highway Star

Pretty good. They went to a lot of genres that I wasn't expecting. Highway Star smoke on the water are obviously a ton of fun

Maybe I’m a Leo, but Never Before have I been Space Truckin’ with an album like this.

At last, an actual rock album rather than jazz. C’mon let’s go Space Truckin’

An absolute classic. I just love deep purple, hits and deep cuts are always great.

Pictures of Home er til gjengjeld dritbra, underrated. Never Before?

old school rock & roll, can't be beat.

these guys rock

highway star

Real good fun doesn't overstay it's welcome

Much more blues than I expected. Lazy is a great track.

I’ve heard parts of this many times over the years, but never the full album. Rockin stuff and you can definitely see how it influenced countless other prog rock/metal bands. Love the low end sound created by the bass paired with the fuzzed out organ.

A blast from the past. One of my first albums. Made in Japan was better.

Onhan tässä kova meno ja hyvää settiä. 🤘🏼

Onhan se kova lätty.

Top track: Pictures Of Home

Ahh, well. You know, sometimes listening to one of the most famous hard rock albums of the 70s is just a plain old hoot.

Super good time. Rockers rocking.

On my radar for a long time but first experience with full album. It’s great - will come back.

Yeah, pretty good. Some great instrumentals. First album I've heard by Deep Purple. Apparently the original venue they wanted to record this in got burned down like right before the recording. By Frank Zappa. LOL!

Probably should’ve been three stars, but the following pushed it up: 1) The 1994 sega mega drive game ‘Rock n Roll Racing’ had a 16 bit version of Highway Star, complete with the extended solo (pure genius). The solo was like an Easter egg. One only heard it when the race was well and truely over, and you were driving around the track backwards to collect the remaining bonus items. 2) The local speedway - Woodford Glen - had a local broadcast ad with Smoke on the Water blaring way too loud (also genius). It wasn’t until high school that I realised the song was not named Woodford Glen

Deep Purple at their peak—tight, energetic, and brimming with confidence. From the blistering opener “Highway Star” to the immortal riff of “Smoke on the Water,” the album is a masterclass in hard rock. The band’s chemistry is undeniable, especially in the way Jon Lord’s organ and Ritchie Blackmore’s guitar weave around each other with both aggression and finesse.

Classic. Love me a bit of Hammond Organ and nobody does it like Jon Lord. Enjoyed hearing this again after a long long time.

(83/100)

I honestly can't complain, most of the tracks here are pretty great. Maybe one or two sleepers on here but this was quality listening material. An above average hard rock album if I'd ever heard. Top 4: Highway Star, Smoke On The Water, Space Truckin' , and When A Blind Man Cries 3.50-3.75/5

Great great great. Listened to it twice. They really go for it full stop. Not an everyday listen but when you are in the mood this will hit.

Excellent album.

Puts the "classic" in "classical rock", lmao. Very good record, contemporary, awesome set list with a few certified CLASSICS. I would rank it as an essential listen for Deep Purple fans, obvisously, but also as a fan of rock and classic rock as a whole. Very "cool" sounding and fits a few different moods. Overall, a banger of an album, especially as a rock music fan. I mean, "Highway Star" as an opener, "Smoke on the Water" AND "Lazy" on the same album? C'mon now...

”Kenen faija pääs jukeboksille?” Klassikkolevy

When a Blind Man Cries ihan täydellinen lopetus albumille ja löytää kyllä tien moneen omaan soittolistaan.

Letkeää old school rokkia. Kyllähän tätä kuuntelisi enemmänkin.

No onhan tää ny kova levy! Oikeastaan vasta viimeinen biisi When a Blind Man Cries on semmoinen mitä ei kauheasti jaksa kuunnella, muuten kyllä kaikki biisit ihan täyttä timanttia.

Awesome heavy metal! Some blues-leaning hard rock too. Big hooks, heavy riffs, and a soaring energy. Epic, fun music all around. The opening track “Highway Star” is incredible. The solos are killer! "Smoke on the Water" is a classic song and actually one that I haven't gotten sick of despite hearing it countless times on the radio. In fact, the more I hear of Deep Purple, the more I appreciate the song. This is a killer album front-to-back. I’d love to play it again nice and loud and rock out.

Awesome album, head banger for sure.

Classic Dad Rock

Highway Star and Space Truckin' are all time greats.

Deep Purple rocks. Not my favourite band, but they rock.

Highway Star, Smoke & Space Truckin’ are the kind of songs that put Classic in Classic Rock

Love the guitars and the old fashioned riffs that I didn't realise were Deep Purple songs.

Some goddamn great, classic heavy metal. Got the classics here like Smoke On the Water, Space Truckin', and Highway Star. And great deep cuts to back it up. Not much else to say. If you don't like this, you're just wrong, lol.

A classic for a reason.

Good,loud

I feel like the term "dad rock" should be reserved for music that has aged poorly and is only still listened to by old people. But this, this is something great. Considering my expectations going into this one, it holds up insanely well even over 50 years later. The riffs are absolutely insane for their time, and it just doesn't stop going hard for pretty much the whole way through.

Didnt realize Highway Star was by Deep Purple, just know the classic, Smoke on the Water. I really enjoyed the rest of this album though.

YES. this is gold. this is a backbone record. a watershed album. you know Smoke on the Water even if you don't know the name or band. Highway Star as an opener is flat out amazing, you hear that swell and then this crunchy, loud, no bullshit song comes head first. and this is the 6th record they've made, culminating in what is arguably the sound of the 70's. Also Space Truckin' as a closer is perfect. this album has a lot in, blues, metal, throwback rock but modernized and made even more raw. its so concise and consistent at 7 tracks, it is close to a 5. my dad loved this shit and i didn't appreciate it until i was older and could see it for the time it came out rather than what else it stacks against. looking at where they started in the 60's to this, its crazy the trajectory that got to this point. its so masterful, and yet in the gigantic, psychedelic, spacy rock of the time, it sounds so grounded and real.

A delightful jam that was obviously a huge influence on other musicians, enjoyed the solid solos

Classic

Everything about this album is terminal forward velocity. The album kicks off with the blistering "Highway Star", a track that perfectly encapsulates the band's blend of high-octane rock, Ritchie Blackmore's ferocious guitar work, and Jon Lord's virtuosic, classical-influenced organ. While "Smoke on the Water" might be its most recognizable track, with its iconic four-note riff, the album is far from a one-hit wonder. Songs like the funky "Maybe I'm a Leo" and the propulsive "Space Truckin'" showcase a band at the peak of their creative powers, jamming with a purpose.

Is there a more iconic riff than Smoke on the Water? Tasty licks all over this album. 4/5

Rockin. I can see here where Metallica derived a lot of inspiration.

Nice musical elements, catchy

Very deep very purple and oh so good. 4.5/5

Head goes bop.

Didn’t think I knew any deep purple but obviously the baseline to smoke on the water is iconic. Just really great rock music.

I thought I didn’t know any Deep Purple, and then got to Smoke on the Water and realised that, of course, I did! Enjoyed this album lots: really appreciated how intimate the guitar work was and was even singing along at some points because the songs were so bloody catchy

Ladies and gentleman, this is a proper rock n roll album. Hard, guitar forward. “Smoke on the Water” is the song that became and all timer. But “Highway Star” and “Space Truckin” are very good as well.

Great albumn

Solid early metal album!

It has probably one of the most recognizable riffs that you will hear in a Guitar Center every-time you’re in a Guitar Center. Also the other songs on the album are bangers. 8/10

Pretty fun. Smoke on the Water always felt overplayed to me, but the rest have some good magic. I'm a fan of keyboard noodling so this works for me.

i think ive finally gotten over my hard rock distaste. it's cool 90/100

awesome album, not just Smoke On The Water (0-3-5) Kicks off with the pummeling of Highway Star, Pictures of Home is great too. ends with When A Blind Man Cries - tremendous!

Begynnelsen på «Smoke on the Water» e så jævla catchy.

Jeepers! This one is really good. You're telling me this was made in 1972!? It sounds like a 80s metal record, only thing that gives it away is probably the organ being used instead of 80s synth. Really enjoyed re listening to this one. The musicianship is other worldly, especially the guitar and organ solos. My favorite song is Pictures Of Home. Insane!

Loved it

Two recognizable hits, one hell of a story told through song and one of the earlier Heavy Metal albums. Deep Purple's Machine Head is such a fantastic listen, it strikes all of the genre's in one that will develop into the 70s Hard Rock sound that is so recognizable and cliché according to a lot of people on this site - little do they know the influence this album and group wield on the shitty "Indie" hipster drivel they listen to and want to complain about not being on this list. 4/5

Smoke on the Water is the reason why the album is the album, and it's not even the best track. Highway Star is just that good. I could listen to this album again, probably will.

Channeling my inner Dewey Finn while listening to this.

I have a soft spot for this one because I had a phase where I was really into Deep Purple when I was in middle and high school. I still enjoy this album but my tastes have changed somewhat and I don’t really have the patience for an albums worth of plodding repetitive guitar solos anymore. Cut out like 2 minutes of each song and it’d be perfect though

smoke on te water

Surprising.

This album was a total banger. Smoke on the Water took me back to playing Guitar Hero as a kid which was a fun memory. This was very enjoyable to listen to and is such a solid rock/metal album. I would definitely rock out to this album again in the future!

Liked Highway Star and Lazy.

i don’t enjoy this sound much, even tho i hear it’s all well done and the songs are good and stuff. ironically “when a blind man cries” was the only song i really loved and it’s not even on the original release. i’ll probably give it a 4 but enjoyment wise it was a 3.

Great example of the psychedelic and bluesy influence on the evolution of metal music. They get memed for the simplicity of Smoke on the Water but they know how to write a better song and play a more complicated riff. Pictures of Home has the great and surprising bass solo, while Never Before starts with a great bass tone.

I’ve listened to a Deep Purple album before. It was a live album. I thoroughly did not enjoy it. But, that was a while ago and since then, I’ve had friends tell me to listen to their magnum opus, perhaps, Machine Head. And so here we are. And man is it good. I wouldn’t say this album is rock at its finest (it’s not really doing anything new or crazy), but it’s certainly rock at its… rockiest. You have these bluesy riffs that are reminiscent of the likes of Hendrix and vague bluesy lyrics that tie back to rocks roots. You have such killer guitar solos on every track that really end up being the focal point of the record. But it’s not just the guitar doing the lifting. It’s not even the drums (amazing drum solo on Space Truckin’ btw) or bass or singing that carry the record. It’s the chemistry between them. You can really tell all these band mates were born to play alongside each other. Every rock element comes together so well in a way you don’t often see. No where is this seen better than in Lazy, where it seems like the instruments are in almost conversation with one another. The chemistry between the players is really what brings this album together and gives it soul. Now, the singing is also great, yet it seems like more of an afterthought, in that the solos take precedence in most songs here. And I love that. That’s what rock is about. Of course, this album has hits, and one is still amazing while the other may be a little overplayed. Just a tad. However overplayed Smoke on the Water is, though, it doesn’t diminish the other songs and the technical mastery seen on them. Highway Star lures you in with the familiarity, but Maybe I’m a Leo keeps you there. It’s in such a similar level of catchiness and rock that matches the allure of the opening track, despite the opening track already being so popular. In short, what I’m saying is that every song on this album, without familiarly, feels familiar yet a little fresh. Fresh enough to keep you entertained, at least. Ultimately, it seems that I do enjoy Deep Purples music. Just not live music. Except for MTV Unplugged that’s where it’s at (love you Kurt and Lauryn, yeah we’re on a first name basis).

Hard Rock But in a good way. Classic album with some very good songs, riffs. Doesn't feel like they've stolen so much from the blues on this one.

Mucho organo hammond. Best track Highway Star Worst Track: motherfucking smoke on the water

Hard not to be biased on this one- I have a soft spot for Deep Purple because my Dad and brother used to blast them a lot growing up. Enjoyed the album a lot- I think it stands out as a pioneet album for early hard rock / progressive rock. Some good hits as well. Overall- great album

I've been listening to these guys a bit lately. This album is the shit. This is great progressive/psychedelic rock.

Legendary rock album by the mighty Deep Purple. An experience lived from beginning to end with attitude and songs filled with character. Always recommended.

I have heard before that Deep Purple is a "one-hit wonder" band for Smoke on the Water (which, of course, I love). However, after listening to this album, I don't really understand why. The guitar and vocals are on point, and this is exactly the kind of sound I'm into. As far as rock goes, this is a great example of good, hard rock. I thought all the songs were great, even though Smoke on the Water was definitely the standout (Highway Star was also up there).

Dope rock album

Solid album. They still had some psychedelic flair while moving into their heavier work.

This could have been released last year. It sounds ridiculously contemporary for what is effectively a heavy-metal cave painting. Hard to argue the place of this band and this recording in the rock music pantheon.

Blast from the past.

goated

Quite good. Lots of radio play songs here… for the era. Inspired me to listen to the preceding album. Also, so great tunes. Solid drum work that I never gave attention to before.

Some rockers on this.

Oh, I remember buying a couple of songs from this album when I got an iTunes gift card maybe around 2011. Overall, great album, and although there are some songs that are a bit meh, the fact that I am so familiar with it made me enjoy it a bit more. I feel like overall it would be slightly over 3.5 stars, so I'm giving it 4, but it has to be pointed out that it is not a full 4-star rating.

It’s really an amazing album, that Deep Purple sound is instantly recognizable. Just short of 5 stars in my opinion because it can be a bit repetitive.

rockkkkkk good

Deep Purple is much more than Smoke On the Water. I’m not blown away by anything here, but this is some solid 70s metal. Sometimes it’s nice to just turn your brain off and rock out.

This was a nostalgic listen, but it took years for me to realize how influential Deep Purple really is. I'll always remember listening to Highway Star in the car with my dad. Waaay ahead of its time and woefully underappreciated.

Definitely one of the better albums I've heard. Musicianship is amazing alongside experimentation that seemed to work every instance. Some really groovy metal that definitely laid the foundation for future blues/metal/hard rock bands. It also has arguably the most popular riff of all guitar riffs with Smoke On The Water. I really want to give this album five stars, but it will stay at four stars for now.

Never really listened to much of Deep Purple besides my limited exposure on guitar hero/rockband with highway star (10/10 song). This album shreds. Heavy riffs, great tone, great solos. Song is pretty diversified with fast paced and sludgy slower/heavy songs. Had a great listen. Some songs felt kinda long, but a strong 4 is in order.

Deep purple jams way harder than I thought they would. Never gave them a chance until the curators forced me to, and I’m into it. Some of the songs in the middle to end are a little too long but overall this was really good. Prefer the darkness of Black Sabbath but this was still pretty good. Feeling a soft 4/5

My first thought on seeing this come up was along the lines of- "Oh yeah, Smoke on the Water is fine. Anything else worthwhile?" Yes. Yes there was. Deep Purple is another band that I've heard of, but never really listened to. I wish I had earlier. This was a great metal album, but also just an all around solid album in general. It was filled with rocking musical compositions. Blackmore often gets referenced as a great metal guitarist, and he really showed it off here. Killer riffs on the songs, and really nailing that early metal tone and feel. The organ added a cool element to the music that I wouldn't have expected without listening to it. The drums were pretty good too, and the bass really hit. I felt the vocals were a little weaker than the rest, but, as often is the case for hard rock/metal, it's less about the singing talent and more about getting the energy right. The energy was right here. While the album was pretty straightforward, they did change it up a little bit with Lazy. It got more bluesy than the other songs and was a nice diversion from the heavier tracks. Never Before felt a little more subdued compared to other tracks on the album, but was still solid. It's hard to say whether any part of the album was better than the rest, as any two-song stretch could compete with another. It was divided nicely to be a strong listen all the way through. Space Trucking was a great finishing song. The main reason I give this a rating in the 4s instead of higher is that there are better albums out there. Not a knock on this one at all, as it is pretty great. It's just slightly below others I consider better. Overall: 4.1/5

A really solid heavy album, loved the whole thing. Never knew it had so many old hits on it from the band, it’s nice to hear some of the originators of metal from the day that had so much influence on younger bands coming up, I can hear a lot of bands in this album.

Até "Who Do We Think We Are" (1973) ainda tem muita coisa que me agrada bastante, mas daí pra frente já me soa bem "rockão básico".

The perfect exemple of 1970’s rock. Very good songs and instrumentation, especially the guitar (yes, we all know THAT song is here). An authentical piece of art that sums up the whole hedonistic worldview of the rock scene at that time - which, as I review it through a Christian worldview, surely downgrades the rating. Classic! 8,2/10

Maybe the most famous yet simple guitar riff of all time on this album. Love the underlining heaviness on here. I’ll go 4 but barely.

A decent album. I always have great memories anytime I hear Highway Star.

they are good

In the car going fast vibes, very enjoyable

Liked most of the musics

# Album Name: Machine Head # Artist: Deep Purple # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Good Album. Dad rock at its best. Plenty of good tunes, riffs and music going on here. # Top Tunes: Highway star / Im a leo / never before / smoke on the water # Would I listen to it again? Yes

Highway Star absolutely slaps

Too many people automatically use “dad rock” in a derogatory manner. This is pure, unfiltered dad rock in the best possible way.

The guitar works is phenomenal. Just absolutely bites into every riff and tears off the meat from the bone. The music is well produced and recorded, good dynamics and range. However, did I mention the guitar?

The have some awesome guitar licks beyond smoke on the water

Flugzeug, Lombok - Jakarta, Indonesien Als Kind viel gehört, aber bestimmt nie in Albumlänge. Läuft gut durchs Ohr, geht voran und macht Laune.

3.5- just the right amount of excess.

Not bad!! I knew the famous songs but the rest of it was enjoyable too. I liked the song “Lazy.”

Favorite Track: Highway Star

A classic hard rock/heavy metal album. Great stuff.

Really enjoyed the album. Not really a single bad/terrible song on it I thought. Loved highway star. Blackmore's guitar solos and riffs are iconic.

High octane hard rock, a precursor to thrash and speed metal. The shinier, adrenaline-fueled twin of Sabbaths depraved sinister metal sound. The solos are masterfully done on all instruments, with bass, guitar and organ solos on Pictures of Home, and plenty all over the album. Used to listen to this all the time, and it's just as good as I remember, Highway Star will always be one of my favorite songs. Best Tracks: Highway Star, Pictures of Home, Space Truckin

Several bangers. I’ll take it! (Did you know “Smoke on the Water” actually happened to them?) FS: Highway Star

“Highway Star” is prime 70’s rock in my book - enjoyed listening to this again - had been a while

I was already familiar with this album. It's a very solid album. It has some of Deep Purple's best songs, including Highway Star and Smoke on the Water. All the tracks are worthwhile though, with some really nice guitar and organ riffs and solos throughout. I would listen to this again any time.

I fuck with this, har väl vetat ett tag att rock eller hårdrock inte är vad jag tidigare trott men det här albumet är väl bevis på att jag rock with it

Includes one of the most iconic songs of the rock era, of course, in "Smoke on the Water." But "Highway Star," "Space Truckin'," and "Never Enough" are also great tracks.

4.0 - Very Good

Groupe connu. =>4/5

Good album. I recognized a lot of the songs. A nice, driving rock to listen to while I was commuting.

I hope I age as gracefully as this record. This is like the ultimate dad rock and I love it. Maybe I love it too much... gotta check with my exes, make sure there isn't a mini me out there somewhere.

Awesome album.

This band is jamm-o-riffic! They have great synergy and energy. Highway Star, Smoke on the Water, Space Truckin... all great. New favorite: Pictures of Home.

Space Truckin’ and Highway Star rock! This album is worth high marks for those songs, and add in Smoke On The Water for more universal rock star punch. Solid album. Deep Purple feels like a cross between Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Steely Dan…heavy metal testosterone with the general looseness of jazz rock.

Never heard the full album before and it was quite surprised. The album starts with a groovy first track and delivers good riffs throughout the album. It ends with a slower and perfect song to close the album.

Pretty sweet

A true classic, old school rock

Wasn't expecting to like Deep Purple this much, but holy hell is Ian Gillan a compelling singer, and those Blackmore riffs are sublime. 4 stars.

Liked this more than I thought I would. Want to give it some more listens.

Classic Rock!!!

Klassisk.

Guitarrón

weeeew rawk on brothers

Súper Rock Clásico.

Classic rock. Doesn’t feel as groundbreaking today as I imagine it did back then, but still holds up!

Legendary rock album. What else is there to say? If you don't recognize the intro riff to Smoke on the Water then you're uncultured.

8/10 Pretty talented dad rock band. I enjoyed every song on here but nothing super outstanding. Great listened all the way through.

GOAT dad rock, but dont feel like going back to it often.

Roots of hard-driving blues metal. Great mix that sounds like a live band. Surprised by how much I enjoyed this record. Highway Star, Lazy and Space Truckin' are the highlights. Classic seventies rock.

Deep Purple at its best, and 70s rock at its peak. I personally can't stomach too much Deep Purple, because they are a little bit too on the nose for 70s rock, however, I can really appreciate a hard rock album like this one.

Solid album overall. Everyone (rightly) knows "Smoke On the Water" and I've heard covers of "Highway Star", but the rest of this was new to me as I've never sought out their music. I can hear their influence on the metal bands that followed, and I think it's totally worth hearing, especially if you like metal/hard rock. "Space Truckin'" is a new favorite now. And of course if that's the story behind how you found the place to record your album you turn it into a (legendary) song.

Great classic rock. Lots of energetic songs. Still don't care for "Smoke on the Water".

Good, kickass rock n roll. Highway Star and Smoke on the Water are classics. Lazy was an interesting song theme to hear over a hard guitar. No complaints.

Highway Star is one of my favorite song of all time. This album also has a little ditty call smoke on the water, which I think is pretty popular. Not a very long album, but what it has super impactful.

An obvious choice for this list. Could you imagine living an entire lifetime without hearing "Smoke on the Water"? As for the album as a whole, it's mostly killer with a wee bit of filler.

Not the best Spinal Tap album, but pretty good!

Good album. Smoke on the water is an all time great.

Love me some smoke on the water.

Just a pure Hard Rock gem through and through. I do think In Rock is a tighter package and that these songs would be perfected on Made In Japan, but as a Hard Rock album this is canon

Hell yeah, Lazy is a track/10

I had the best taste in music when I was 8 and learning how to play guitar

Great Album. Throughly enjoyed it. Classic Rock!

Good listening. From the start to the end.

Good stuff.

Insert Shaq "I apologize. I was not familiar with your game" meme here.

What an excellent album! I had never listened to this all the way through, but I'd heard a couple songs from here that I really liked. Definitely will be in rotation.

I gave a previous Deep Purple album three stars and it wasn't as good as Machine Head. If I had to choose my favourite Deep Purple record (I'm not really a big fan), it's probably Machine Head, not only because I recognize several songs on here, but also it's where the band comes together and produces a solid collection of songs. I don't love it, but to me this is the album Deep Purple will be remembered by.

Loved every second of this album.

BANGER

Have on vinyl: As of today, Yes. Rating: 8.4 Fav Song: Smoke on the Water is iconic, but I'm digging Lazy today. Notes: Bangers

Groovy riff rock that behave the basis for "classic rock" radio stations for now and forever. No shortage of toe tappers and head nodders

Easy 4 stars 🤘🏼

I very much enjoyed it

Another album that hit hard at the right time. I enjoyed way more than I anticipated. I'm not usually one for a rockin' guitar solo but boy did I dig the wailing on this album. Excellent opener with Highway Star and by the time Smoke on the Water hit I was already a big fan. I do think Space Truckin' and When a Blind Man Cries could have been edited out to make this darn near perfect. All this said, I'm wavering between 3 and 4. Oh what the heck, we need more kindness in the world right now! Rock the fuck on!

This is an absolute classic. If you like hard rock and early metal you will love this. It starts with one of the greatest rock songs of all time highway star. And then it also contains the most played chords of all time with smoke on the water. I’m pretty positive that what like 80% of people learn on guitar first. Great album, they got a lot to offer other than the two massive hits. Don’t sleep on this classic.

solid classic rock

Hard Rock, 1972 -> 4

Classic rock. The first album I owned way back in 1973. Young preteen sophisticated me venturing into rock and roll. 😅

I know they tried capturing their live sound on here, not sure how close they came. All I can say is that Lazy track would have been incredible to have experienced live.

Loved it. Never once listened to this album. Just know the hits. But I thought it was pretty solid all the way through.

A classic

What a great album. Yk my first metal album was AC/DC and I rly enjoyed that but this one knocked it out the park. Amazing guitar solos, riffs and just beautiful all around tbh. Ofc I knew smoke on the water before this but like it was just a great an album and that song might be the worst on the project. Favourite songs include Lazy and Highway Star. This is a great transition going from rock to metal would listen again. 9.5/10 4.7/5

See? Dad rock can be good I just have to be in the mood for it. Wanted to give it a low 4 but I had a lot of fun so a good 4

This album makes me feel like I'm driving the coolest car imaginable as fast as possible while drinking the most thirst quenching lager beer (laws be damned), I feel *cool* listening to this album because this album sounds like it knows it's playing some of the catchiest and meatiest riffs in a way that many hard rock acts try and totally fail at. Basically: yeah this one's awesome what else can I say?

Was good. Smoke on the water carries the album but is a classic

Solid album. Fun, interesting and overall enjoyable

Opening track is amazing, the rest is average/slightly above average

Some stupid with a flare gun.

I've never checked Deep Purple more than the over played songs on the classic rock radio. But I must say I kinda like this. It's a solid album with no skippable songs imho. I don't know if this would make me check more Deep Purple albums, but this was a nice surprise.

A massively famous album by your friend's dad's favourite band. I've heard two songs from this album before (the two you might expect) as they get a lot of play on rock stations in my area. I'm fairly confident that I know what I'm getting into. Hopefully a fun kick-ass hard rock fiesta. I do find this specific subgenre of rock to often be a bit limited, but Deep Purple is considered one of the best bands to ever do it so I'm not worried. Highway Star Classic. Good energy. Has a bit edge to it. Never paid attention to the vocals. Think they work very well. The guitar work is of course stellar, the obvious highlight here. Would also like to shout out the drums, really sets the foundation of the track. Fun. 4/5 Maybe I'm a Leo Truck commercial riff. Really like the vocals on the first verse, the way the melody is sung creates a cool effect. I love how the mix treats the bass. Great mellow energy, takes its time without being boring. Good track. 4/5 Pictures of Home The drumming in the intro kicks the song off well. Don't dig the how the vocals are mix. Mediocre chorus. Seems a bit by the numbers, doesn't really do anything special or interesting. The solos are doing a lot of heavy lifting on top of what is a fairly uninteresting track. They do however manage to show off their instrumental talent salvaging it somewhat. Fine. 3/5 Never Before Groovy little rhythm. The drums are stellar on this one. I love how the guitar is written, works as a great support piece for the vocals. Doesn't seem to shy away when it is its turn to be in the spotlight either. The song lacks a bit of a kick, doesn't resolve some of its vocal in a satisfying manner, leaving it sounding a bit flat. Ends a bit abruptly. Decent. 3.5/5 Smoke on the Water The riff banned from every guitar shop. Probably the instrumental sequence that has been butchered the most times in history by amateurs learning their first instrument. What an iconic track. Based on an unbelievable true story, great piece of music history. A song which is hard to imagine was ever new, feels like it's just always been around like some sort of pillar of reality. The "Happy Birthday" of rock. For how iconic the guitar riff is it's the moment the bass comes in which is the highlight for me. Also when paying attention to the song as a whole the keys stick out as underrated, they really add texture to the mix. The story is told in such a direct way, the lyrics are really easy to follow. It really is an inspired song, deserves the hype. Quintessential. 5/5 Lazy Really out of nowhere intro. Spacious and psychedelic. Crazy work on the keys. Was not expecting an instrumental jam like this. Find myself nodding along. Great chemistry. The lyrics are fun. Love me some some of that harmonica, breaks through the denseness of the rhythm section. Was not expecting this to be this good. Fantastic. 5/5 Space Truckin' Holy 1970s those lyrics could not be from any other decade. "Everynaut" alone should put you on a list. The chorus isn't too great. Fairly generic if not for the lyrics and the extremely overbearing guitar riff. The dramatic falsetto over the words "Space Truckin'" will never not be funny to me. Terrible song, had fun. 1.5/5 When a Blind Man Cries The drama... The tension... Sleepy bluesy guitar sounds good. Works well for what it's trying to deliver. The main star here is the guitar and it plays its part to perfection. A bit limited, not much else going on so ends up falling a bit short as a song. Decent. 3.5/5 Good album, nothing too crazy or unexpected. Just solid throughout. Ritchie Blackmoore's guitar playing is definitely deserving of the praise it gets, and understandably the main highlight of the album. If I were to nominate an unsung hero I would definitely single out Jon Lord on the keys who consistently adds great texture and dimension to many lf the tracks coming in at just the right time to add a little flourish to the track. I would also like to shoutout the writing on the lyrics, as they were fantasticly easy to follow without becoming too predictable and just generally solid apart from on "Space Truckin'" where they frankly came across as riduculous. All in all good performances and songs in general. Only really drops points because of personal preferances. 4/5 stars. Fave track. Lazy (tied with Smoke on the Water) Least fave track. Space Truckin'

Bangers fra start to finish. B3 orgel galore! Hørt litt på Made in Japan, live plata fra samme år. Shit de må ha vært rå å se live back in the day.

Krótkie, treściwe. Podoba mi się. 4/5

01) Highway Star - 7,0 02) Maybe I'm a Leo - 7,0 03) Pictures of Home - 7,0 04) Never Before - 7,5 05) Smoke on the Water - 10,0 06) Lazy - 7,5 07) Space Truckin' - 7,5 08) When a Blind Man Cries - 8,5 TOTAL: 7,75 (78/100) Current ranking: 190/480

Exceptional guitar as we'd EXPECT, especially on Highway Star. Only song I didn't like was the ballad at the end which is pretty dull. Great to hear more by them than the of course excellent Smoke on the Water. Love Pictures of Home. Great harmonies. Great instrumentation throughout Lazy (disproving its title amirite). Love the syncopation on Space Truckin'.

It was good rock music. Not my jam but it was a good listen for sure.

Not Boston/Boston but close

AMazing Album. Highway Star and Smoke on the Water are two of the greatest rock songs of all time.

Hell yeah. I had highway star as my midi style ringtone back in the flip phone days. Shit RIPS.

I came in skeptical for another old rock album that for it's way here on some guy's nostalgia. There's no playing around though- this is some tasty stuff. I was fully in it, head rocking, all that jazz, until Smoke on the Water. Maybe it's because it's all anyone could 'play' in middle school music class when they got out the guitars, but I couldnt seriously enjoy the song. Which is a shame, considering its probably more interesting than I ever realized.

Rlly good Felt influential

This is about as classic rock as a classic rock album can get. I'm a big fan of Deep Purple, but this album is a little hit or miss to me. There are some of the greatest tracks they ever made on here: Highway Star, Lazy, Space Truckin' and When A Blind Man Cries are some of the best songs Deep Purple has ever played. The solos are amazing on here. On the other hand, Smoke on the Water has gotten boring after hearing it for so long and the other songs on here aren't that interesting. Overall not as good as In Rock.

Very nice rock

It’s hard not to open up this album and immediately go to side two track one Smoke on the Water. Every guitar player learns this riff as one of their first. But beyond that it is one of the most recognizable songs in classic rock. Despite the simplicity of that riff, Songs like Highway Star and Pictures of a Home, remind you that Richie Blackmore is one of the best guitarist of the classic rock era. I also have to give a shout out to bassist Roger Glover on his fat solo on Pictures too. This entire album is just dirty, dirty good. Ian Gillian became a huge influence in Iron Maiden and so many bands coming out of the UK in the late ‘70s. I don’t know how much Deep Purple I really need, but I’m glad I found this one!

Random thoughts: * Highway Star is underrated. I think they use that song on one of the Guitar Hero games. * Smoke on the Water is so classic. What a great guitar riff! I still get pumped up every time I hear that. * The lyrics to Smoke ion the Water are the literal story. There are no layers. It's a literal retelling of what happened. I can say that I knew Frank Zappa was name checked in the lyrics but didn't know the story behind the song. Never paid enough attention to the lyrics. That is a testament to the music for sure! * Space Truckin got my head bobbing! Cmon! * This reminded me of Thin Lizzy. There are the top tier 70s rock bands: Zepp and Black Sabbath. And then there are the next tier down like Thin Lizzy and Deep Purple.

Unexpectedly fun

Obvious classic of “Smoke on the Water”, I was surprised treading the Wikipedia to learn about the backstory. I think the “Live” process of recording definitely benefited the final product, and it was a solid listen.

I don't think I've given Deep Purple much of a chance, but the little I've been listening to I've enjoyed quite a bit. They get a little harder than I ever expected. Is Smoke on the Water actually iconic or a classic, or do I think that just because I went to Clark and that was the bands bread and butter? I didn't realize Highway Star was them and it was from the early 70s, it's a banger, maybe a little longer than it needs to be. A lot of these songs feel a little long honestly. I really like the lead guitar tone and the drummer is a beast, bass player gets a little lost in the mix but he's doing some work. Dude has a great voice on some of those high spots.

Smoke On The Water has been ruined for me by a million shitty marching band covers, but the story behind it is pretty fucking Rock & Roll. Some ass hat shot a flare gun off at a Zappa concert and burnt the place down where Deep Purple was gonna record this album. Who knew 🤷🏻‍♂️. Overall, I liked it. Definitely more Rock than Metal, but I can see those early Heavy Metal seeds starting to poke their heads out on this thing.

Surprisingly heavy and listenable. Didn't know much beyond 'Smoke on the Water' going in. 'Highway Star' is a helluva opener......made me want to hop in my car and start doing burnouts.

Great album.

I thought I'd had this album already, but this makes #3 of Deep Purple for me. That seems like too much. I feel like this list would have been complete with just this album from them. As iconic as this album is, I've never really connected with it, or with Deep Purple at all for that matter. I mean I have great appreciation for the musicianship on this record but it just kind of seems cheesy after 50 years. Guitars and bass are amazing throughout though, so you can't fault it really at all in that aspect. I mean Ritchie Blackmore and Roger Glover played so well together it kind of made the band. This lineup of the band anyway. I do get a little tired of the organ in this kind of music, it just doesn't ever seem to fit to me. I think that's where the cheese really sets in. It's a little hard to rate this one because although it's not something I would really listen to all the time, it is undeniably a good album. I think I'll go with like 3.5/5 and will round up for the guitars and bass.

They do smoke on the water! Pretty good album

Smoke on the Water is really good and the rest of the album is not quite as great but still quality. Definitely a classic rock album that needed to be on this list.

liked this one, theres some crazy talent in this band. not always my thing but some super awesome songs in here.

This album rocked my socks off

For some reason, I've found it hard initially to see through the facade of it being "The Smoke On The Water Album". But it's more to offer, including some attractive groovy tracks, and some sadder ones, finishing with a When A Blind Man Cries which feels really deep. Hesitant 4. Maybe I wish it was something more?

Loved this album, it felt jammy with great guitar parts but also felt much more refined than Deep Purple In Rock. Favorite songs were: Highway Star Lazy When a Blind Man Cries 8/10

These people are riff machines. "Maybe I'm A Leo" has me moving in my chair. This makes me the thirteen year old in me want to pick up guitar. They aren't slowing down. "Pictures Of Home" is filled with shredding. "Smoke On The Water" was THE song for new guitar players to play in school. It's iconic. "Lazy" is my favorite song yet. "Space Truckin'" is an amazing concept. I would like to Space Truckin' around the stars. Unfortunately, sci-fi has made me worried about getting stuck on a distant moon's penal colony, waiting to gather enough credits to buy a ride back home. 8/10. Rad album.

Don't quite know why I don't listen to this record more. Proper 70s rock. Blackmore's playing is impeccable as is Paice and Lords. Lazy is ace.

Really good playing--I just wish the lyrics and vocalist could keep up

Short but oh so sweet, great album from a great band.

That was REALLY good. 5 guys. 1972. Smoke on the Water - I've never enjoyed it as much as in this context. Banger.

This album, and Deep Purple in general, was an important influence on several rock and metal artists that came after them. I think people forget about context when listening to music from this list and dismiss a lot of it just because it's "old", or not their preferred genre. Are the songs a bit simple and lyrics lacking depth? Yeah. Do they still slap? Yeah. Is it "dad rock"? My dudes, the album was released in 1972. Of course it is. Loosen up.

very good. Thoroughly enjouyed

Highway Star - 5/5 Maybe I'm a Leo - 4/5 Pictures of Home - 3/5 Never Before - 3/5 Smoke on the Water - 5/5 Lazy - 3/5 Space Truckin' - 4/5 Average score - 3.8/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ real solid album. didn't care much for Pictures of Home

I like the song number 4, 5, 7, 8

Hard rock is so fun, man. Deep Purple's Machine Head is perhaps a bit overplayed, but it's full of iconic banger with great riffs, impressive solos, and fun vocals nonetheless. The only complaint I have is that this album feels a little low energy. It's hard to explain exactly what I mean since I'm not familiar with music production terms, but the mix feels a bit barren, if that makes sense. There is not enough layers, not enough going on. Still a great album, but I wish it had more detail.

I could've sworn that I already listened to this album via this list, but I'm realizing it was Deep Purple's "Live in Japan" album (which shouldn't really count). Anyway, this album should be appreciated more for its technical ability displayed by the group, as opposed to the lyrical content. Iconic guitar riffs, drum solos, and the organ playing among others are front and center all throughout. Yes, I guess this is "dad rock" through and through, but that shouldn't be interpreted as slanderous. This group and the associated singles have garnered a reputation for good reason, and it's just good ol' classic rock. Best tracks (excluding the overplayed "Smoke on Water"): Highway Star, Lazy, Space Truckin'

Solid riffs with a bit of pyschedelia thrown in, not bad at all

banger after banger

Fun early metal album

Excellent stuff

Iconic

Still seems weird I never listened to these guys before this list. In Rock, I really liked and have listened to a lot more since it came up. Gave it a 4 when in hindsight it should have been a 5 (and therein lies a bit of an issue with this list in that it’s really hard to rate an album you don’t know a 5 straight off the bat). Anyway, I do like this album but not quite as much in comparison. This one feels more measured, which isn’t a bad thing, it is more varied perhaps. But I just prefer the slightly more unhinged nature of In Rock. Yeah Smoke on the Water has a legendary intro, but nothing on this album has the same mental experimental brilliance of ‘Child in time’.

Classic

Yeah pretty good.

Just some really solid classic rock. 4.1

yeeeaaahh yeeeaahhh yeeeaaahhh space truckin! this is head and shoulders above the rest the finest rock and roll work of the 70s

Just give me a Bud Light and put me in the garage with one of those caged work lights hung over a rafter because I am a 40-something year old dad puttering around okay. This song has not one but TWO (2) great road trip songs on it along with Smoke on the Water which is, yes, very overplayed including the time a couple of kids did it at karaoke at the skating rink once, but it is still very fun.

Classic early blues rock album. Early metal vibes for sure. Smoke on the Water, Space Truckin, and Highway Star are the classics but Maybe I’m a Leo stood out to me. Cool groove.
