Reviews (page 3 of 13)
Someone must have laced these guitar solos with something because I am obsessed.
This is an old friend I've not listened to in a while. It's a great album. With, of course, their most iconic track. Smoke on the water. This version however also includes the beautiful 'When A Blind Man Cries'. Though it was not included on the original version of the album. Apparently Mr Blackmore hated it, and refused to let them use it. Well this is the second album from the classic mk II line up in this list. Roll on the third, Fireball. Well I suppose you've guessed what score I'm giving it.
Really fun energetic album. Guess I’m the age that enjoys the lame dad rock that other reviewers hated.. plenty here to enjoy. 4.5/5
After four 1 star reviews in the last week this album is a breath of fresh air and very welcome break from the dross I’ve been served up. In their early days and from the time this album was a product of, I was a big Purple fan. Having said that this is probably my least favourite album from that era. Their other albums from that period contain a lot more decent tracks than the ones making up this album. Machinehead benefits from containing what is arguably Purples most famous track, Smoke On The Water. The riff of that track is instantly recognisable and again arguably one of the top guitar riffs ever. Inclusion of that track alone makes this a five star album but it is admirably backed up with two other gold standard tracks Highway Star and Space Trucin’. Beyond that though for me the standard of the tracks are not top Deep Purple fayre but enough for me to give it its obligatory 5 stars. 5/5 1/11/24
Granatenmäßiges Album. Hörenswert.
It rocks
When it comes to early heavy metal, I would argue Deep Purple had as much of an influence as anyone, including Black Sabbath. Machine Head is unquestionably the best album they released, which is an exceptional compliment, considering the quality of music they have continued to release into the present day. The album kicks off with what may be the greatest driving song ever recorded, “Highway Star” Big drums, scorching guitar work, and unbelievable organ. The album also includes the first song everyone in the world learns to play on their first electric guitar, “Smoke on the Water” is still a great rock n roll song, despite the overplayed intro riff. Shortly after that we hit the second greatest driving song ever written, “Space Truckin’” As far as early heavy metal/rock n roll goes, in my opinion, this is about as good as it gets. 5 stars
When I was a kid, my dad told me about a trip he took to Montreux, Switzerland to see Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention in an old casino. In the middle of the concert someone a little ways in front of him launched some sort of firework or flare, it started smoking in the rafters and soon flames engulfed the ceiling. They evacuated and he stood on the lakeshore with his friends and watched the building burn. As he told me this story, he fished out a cassette and put it in the stereo. "A few months later, I was listening to the radio, and someone had made a song about it," he said, and then he pressed play.
Great classic rock staple.
I’ve always heard about this album, but never listened. Kicks off with highway star. What a record so far. Ok, the drum intro to “pictures of home”. Ozzy’s band clearly ripped this off for “over the mountain. This album is great and had a quite an influence. The bass playing on this record is amazing and over the top. Clearly this had to be an influence on Steve Harris.
What a great rock album. Love it.
Dancing on the fence between prog rock and riff rock, then flipping into the blues jams to mix it up (lazy). A classic from start to finish. Love the fat sounds of the guitars and bass, and their signature synth pushing into distortion making it almost like another guitar. All tubes and analogue. No rough edges to be found.
9.5/10. This is a revolutionary album that pioneered hard rock and metal music. Rainbow is one of my absolute favourite bands, so it's great to see some pre-Rainbow Ritchie Blackmore work in this 1001 album project. Although, I am disappointed by the fact that there aren't any Rainbow albums in the project. :)
Machine Head was an album my dad introduced me to when I was really young. At the time, Deep Purple was just another classic rock band in the mix, and I didn’t fully appreciate them until more recently. Growing up, they were always playing in the background, but it’s great to now look back and really understand their place in rock history. Whether it’s hard rock, metal, or prog rock, these guys definitely made their mark. And honestly, how can you not love that Hammond organ jamming along with their music?
This was really good in my opinion. I listened to this several times and will probably go back for more. 5/5
I've only heard Hush and Smoke in the Water from Deep Purple before listening to this album for the review. Highway Star - this just rocks. Awesome tempo and layered guitar bits. I just love this tune, it's so cool and I'm very glad I've discovered it. Maybe I'm a Leo - this one is already, nothing special off about it, just doesn't hit the same marks as the other tracks in the album. Pretty good guitar solo followed by a keyboard solo around the middle. Another solo at the end, okay this is pretty sweet then. Pictures of home - another awesome tune that just rips. Same vein as Highway Star that has an awesome thumping tempo. This has a bass solo too!!! Never Before - a little funkier at the start. Decent track overall, not as epic as some of the other tunes in the album. Helped somewhat by the solo around the end Smoke on the water - can't take this song seriously anymore. It was introduced to me when I was 8 and learning guitar for the first time. The riff is seared into my brain permanently. I guess it speaks to how immortal this song is that it's so simple and catchy that it's literally baby's first tune learning and instrument. Great song overall, keyboard, bass and drum bits were excellent which I hadn't paid enough attention to on this track in the past. Superb guitar solo too. Lazy - really enjoyed the keyboard section at the start. Best parts of this song are either side of the vocals. Particularly during the first section of vocals before the harmonica the bit the song went mild for me before it picks back up again. I did enjoy this track though. Space Truckin' - pretty fun lyrics in this one. Most of the instrumentals were pretty basic but this didn't stop it from being an enjoyable track. Not as good as others in this album. When A Blind Man Cries - this might be my favourite on the album. I liked the slower tempo to close the album out. Vocals were clean and showed off more talent that some of the other tracks. The guitar parts too were sensational. The more I listen to the album the better it gets. Which is taking it from a 4 to 5/5
Okay I thought I needed a really long break from 70s rock, but this album was surprisingly awesome. It has some real stank on it compared to some of the more formulaic rock I’ve heard lately. And the baseline fucking goes.
Good old rock and roll. A great album with lots of classic songs.
Boom there’s yer dinner - absolute classic
Ooft
HNNNGGGGGGGGHHH... perkele.... lazy
Classic old rock. Was against first but surprisingly enjoyed and easy listen
Hard rock masterpiece. Doesn't try to be anything but a fun time. Every song is sick. Simple as that. I'm also remembering that I also gave their live album a five. I guess I'm a Deep Purple guy and never realized. *Heard before.
Holy shit. I only ever knew (and loved) Smoke on the Water. I didn't know the whole album was going to melt my face off.
Weltklasse.
This is the best Deep Purple album. Every song on here is top tier, but “Highway Star” and “Smoke on the Water” stand above the others. Just absolute fantastic 70s rock.
What can I say?!? One of the greatest, groundbreaking rock albums of all time. Epic.
One of the best albums by Deep Purple. DP were really talented and this is their peak!
Previously rated: In Rock (5/5) ************************ Nice to hear one of the best albums after getting one of the worst yesterday (the Liars one). Everything here rocks. The guitar, bass, organ, drums, vocals. Just groovy hard rock perfection. Most people know Smoke On the Water and Highway Star, and some have heard Space Truckin', but the hidden gem here is Pictures of Home. I can't get it out of my head.
Takes just about 2 seconds to realise this album is an all time great. Fuck what an opening. And the rest of the album keeps the bangers coming one after another after another after another. Probably the greatest rock record ever made. Every song is a powerful showcase of pure talent all across the band, with solos from every instrument leaving your jaw broken from hitting the floor. I FUCKING LOVE THIS FUCKING RECORD
It's pretty dadly. Highway star is good but a little too cheesy but I like it. Lazy is the best on the album for me. Despite being cheesy dad rock, the instrumentals make up for it for me and I still love this one. Will I listen to again: 100%
Though I was raised the the classic rock tradition, I was never deep into Deep Purple. But Machine Head is a phenomenal hard rock album. Anyone who's turned on a radio or walked into a guitar store has heard Smoke of the Water, which became the centerpiece of the record. On one hand, good for Deep Purple. On the other hand, it's really the weakest track on the otherwise excellent album. It does, however, feature a very strong and confident Ian Gillian vocal. Highway Star and Space Truckin' are the other relatively well-known songs on Machine Head. Highway Star is one of the ultimate driving jams. The song was built for the highway. It rocks. It swings. It has a filthy keyboard break from Jon Lord. Oh, and it has a great neo-classical multi-tracked guitar solo with Richie Blackmore harmonizing with himself. It's one of those songs that just feels great driving down the highway in the summer with your windows rolled down. Space Truckin' is another heavy groove and a great jam. But the real star of Machine Head is the lesser known Maybe I'm a Leo. It's more straightforward than the other showpieces on the album. But the guitar riff, doubled by Roger Glover on bass guitar, is both heavy and catchy. The drums are rudimentary, but also driving, and so heavy. Ian Paice is hitting the drums hard! The guitar solos are great too. And check that groove on Never Before. The way the guitar delicately weaves through that intro bit is so subtle and effective. What a great album.
Man this album smokes. Every track is standout. Every musician is standout. The vocals are standout. An absolute classic. 5 stars all day, every day.
So good - best Mk. II era album. Have to thank the guy playing it a lunch spot in Austin. Went straight to Waterloo from lunch to get my own copy.
There's only one possible rating for this album 😉😂 God, I fell in love with this album as a teenager.. Highway Star - 5/5 ⭐ What an opener! ..Leo - 4/5 😎 Great simple riffs Pictures of home - 6/5 - Purple at their best 💜 Never Before - 6/5 - almost 70s glam rock! 😂 Reminds me also of "Free" Smoke on the water - 7/5 - Perfection. Musical nirvana 😎👍✅✅✅ Lazy - 6/5 Jazz rock. Great drums, guitar, bass and organ... and vocals too ⭐😉 Space Trucking - 6/5 - Nailed it! ♠️ ...Blind man - 6/5 Perfect. What guitar / vocals! 🌞👏 So, absolutely ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Good old Classic Rock Songs Wow.
Really thought it would sound dated, but in fact, better now than ever. Innovative - along with Zeppelin and Sabbath, created the genre. Cool, catchy, and unmatched performances - Ian Paice is exceptional on here, his playing is on another level. Great band, fun tunes, and if this is "Dad Rock," good! Now I know what my favorite genre is.
That was great. Will listen to again. 5/5
Deep Purple is one of those bands you either love or hate, and I am on the love side with the “Mark II” line up of Blackmore, Lord, Paice, Glover and Gillan. This album has several bangers, Space Truckin, Lazy, Smoke on the Water, and Highway Star- which was the soundtrack background for the one time I drove 125+ MPH in a vehicle at 17 years old. Smoke on the water, while a simple riff, is the signature song everyone back in the day first learned when they picked up a guitar. DP was also the first Rock act to perform with a full orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall in 1969- while commonplace for bands now, it was quite out of the box thinking at the time. For me the is the 2nd best work of the band, 2nd only to “Perfect Strangers” when they got this line up back together in 1984. 4.5/5
Groovy!
Awesome rock album, has some well known hits!
"Highway Star" is a Rock Band classic and "Smoke on the Water" is probably the most iconic guitar line of all time. I've never heard any other songs from this album, but they all rock just as hard. Some grade-A classic rock.
This record is a beast. Never listened to the whole thing. No duds, really liked pictures of home. Each member is a master of his instrument.
I loved this one! You can hear how much they influenced so many hard rock/metal bands that came after. Aside from the obvious hit, it was nice finding some new faves and really diving into their music more! Definitely plan on revisiting.
Shout out to the deranged Zappa fan with the flare gun
SPACE TRUCKING YEAH YEAH YEAH
Great and varied rock album
goede wijn behoeft geen krans
Amazing album
Génial !!! Thats perfect
Recorded in a closed-for-the-winter hotel using the Rolling Stones mobile recording unit, this is a record of the band PLAYING. What you're hearing is what happened with very little "studio" applied. ..... fucking amazing. 10/5
A classic hard rock/heavy metal album, Highway Star is an instant classic, with howling vocals and organ solos. The whole album is easy to rock out to.
70's hard rock. One of the classic first albums pioneering heavy metal. Every song is excellent, with outstanding musicianship and vocals. Over 50 years old and still stands the test of time.
LOVE Deep Purple. Cant say this is my favorite album of theirs but its certainly an excellent 70s rock album
I listened to this album for the first time in July 2022, before I had discovered this app. I had been making my way through the albums in my own way and this was one that stopped me in my tracks. Every track is a belter. Solid through and through. It makes me sad that I lived for 46 years without this in my life. At least I have it there now.
Yeah
great
Lots of solid songs. Outstanding vocals, keys, guitar drums. Great lyrics..
A great record. Thanks dad for showing this to me!
Great record I never listened to the whole album in early years just Smoke On The Water.
Effing classic. This is classic rock, amazing.
3/22/24. Rock and roll perfection for me here. Badass sounding, great vocals, and can’t deny the powerful sound of the organ. Also some great grooves and headbangers.
Classic.
this is the best deep purple lp i'd say. has the most amount of the hits and their best songs in general. even the ones that arent thaaaat well known here are great. shoutout to blackmore and even more to john motherfucking lord. one of if not the best rock keyboard players. blackmore, as i was saying is a great and distinct guitar player too, and although he is recognized as such, i think he deserves more. highway star has one of the best solos of all time and smoke on the water although known for its main riff, has a great solo too. awesome sounding album overall.
Ian Gillan’s wordsmithery never probes the depths of the human condition but it doesn’t really matter, he can still hold a tune. This is a Ritch(ie Blackmore) album of solid classic rock at a good (Ian) Paice and (Jon) Lord are there some good moments. The (Roger) Glove(r)s are off as it hits you with some fantastic Deep Purple hits and even the filler tracks are solid. Though I would urge you to check out the version of Pictures of Home from the Live with the London Symphony Orchestra album.
Gema.
Classic masterpiece
I love discovering how much I missed the dancy / groovy part of rock n roll when I was young. I thought it was all heavy riffs. The angsty side. This Is honestly one of the best running albums I’ve listened to in a while
dun dun dun, dun dun dundun, dun dun dun, dun dunnnnnn
Classic awesome
Classic album from one of the biggest hard rock groups of the 70s
9/10. Was soothing and fun at the same time. I could listen to this all day long. Repetiveness in some of the songs could be seen as mundane by some but I didn’t mind it. Had enough variety and clear talent to me. Was leaning 8/10 and then Smoke on the Water played and I bumped it to a 9 for that classic.
It's crazy to me that Smoke On The Water is the big single from this album. Imo, it might be the weakest song on the album. It's packed full of good jams. A great listen.
- Excellent album! - Great rock beats to work to - 'Highway Star' is a stand out
Classic! Space Trucking! Come on! Come on! Come on!
nice
Classic. My dad's first album. I love Deep Purple, hard to go wrong with their music. The unique thing about Deep Purple is the amount of keyboard/organ they used.
You know it's funny. These guys get remembered as one of the coolest rock groups of a generation, but you go back and listen to the lyrics and they are so abstract and removed from reality that it almost sounds a little dorky in a modern context. I wouldn't knock them for it, but there is a level of imagination you don't hear much anymore from pop musicians. Even some of their more iconic rifts and solos in this album are just a bit silly. Love the album, incredible musicians, ever last one of them, but wow has this album really aged.
Deep Purple could have done nothing to make Machine Head better than it is. It’s an obvious contender for greatest hard rock release of all time.
Liked it way more than I thought.
Rock & Roll del viejo. Dos megahits. Vinilo.
See my review for Made in Japan!! Love a bit of DP!!
Great!
This album blew me away. I really only knew them from “Smoke on the Water,” so I went into it expecting more psychedelic blues rock—and there is plenty of that. But when the opening track kicks off and it’s symphonic metal?! Holy shit, I was not prepared. As much as I loved the bluesy tunes on this album, the metal tracks stole the show. One of the best albums I’ve listened to from this list so far. Favorite tracks: “Highway Star,” “Pictures of Home,” and “Space Truckin” 5/5
Classic Purple
The stage is set, the green flag drops! Let the carnage begin!
Bon début
Highway Star is one of my favorite songs
HIGHWAY STAR - What a tremendous way to open an album! Had to play it twice! Loved this album when it came out - especially HIGHWAY STAR, SMOKE ON THE WATER, and SPACE TRUCKIN'. Looking forward to hearing this thing again. In many ways, this band and this album helped define 1972. I had forgotten this important fact (per Wikipedia): They were listed in the 1975 Guinness Book of World Records as "the globe's loudest band" for a 1972 concert at London's Rainbow Theatre... LAZY cooks. Opening reminds me of The Band's CHEST FEVER. SPACE TRUCKIN' - How many octaves does Ian Gillan have, for fuck's sake?!? I think this still holds up as an excellent album. Can't decide between 4/5 or 5/5. It's weird that I'd give A Night At The Opera a 4 and this a 5, but......... ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ __________________________________ 🎧 LPs reviewed: 31 🎧 LPs left to review: 970 🎧 LPs I found great/relevant enough to be mandatory listens (5): 9 🎧 LPs I *might* include in my own list (4): 10 🎧 LPs I will certainly *not* include in mine (1-2): 8
Slow paced and predictable, not an album I would revisit
Great
Really good songs. Great guitar riffs and solos. Good album overall. 4 or 5 stars
masterpiece
Highway Star is a perfect opener, hard driving with great solos. Pictures of Home also strong, interesting melodies and a big bass solo in the middle. Smoke on the Water too...and Lazy is mostly instrumental with a long intro before it picks up with some intricate lead work. Big chunky riffs on Space Truckin' to end it. Hard rock classic.
This is an excellent album. Solid drums, guitars, and vocals all the way through. 5/5
Ondanks het overschatte 'Smoke on the Water' is de rest van deze plaat fantastisch
This is awesome I new 2 or 3 songs but listen to the hole album and I loved every song need this on vinyl
Machine Head is everything that their live album "Made in Japan" is not: lean, tight arrangements, no filler, no self-indulgence, and an absolute joy to listen to. This should always be the first Deep Purple album that anyone hears.
A+ classic hard rock album.
This is MUCH better than the noodling live album I got as a first album. It's definitely of the time and is all the better for it. The keyboards add a lot to this record and set it apart from others in the genre. Never Before grooves, Lazy's call and response vibes get my head nodding and foot tapping. Lazy in some way reminds me of Boom Boom by John Lee Hooker when the vocals kick in. I will definitely add this to my listening rotation and may even buy to play in the car (with the top down of course).
Bass work is more memorable than I remember!
Brilliant album, a weird story about the recording of the album and the origin of "Smoke on the Water". If you like this genre, this is one of the top albums.
Fantastic!
A rock and also a metal classic! Making a album in a portable studio and in the 70?! God! I love it! Every single song has an amazing riff, vocals, everything. I'd never listen this album before, just the famous songs: Smoke on the Water and Highway Star, so listen to the complete album was beautiful! Like i said before, every song is AMAZING.
A phenomenal albums that so many people forget about exists! Smoke on the water is legendary, sure- but what about SPACE TRUCKIN?? This whole album is what I would show a friend who doesn't enjoy rock to turn them immediately!
Super fun album. Really like these guys a lot. Favorite track: Highway Star
P.S: A música que menos gosto é Smoke On the Water
I didn’t realize how much I like deep purple. This band keeps it rocking and has some great, fun tracks. Keep the deep purple deep.
Classics! A Masterpiece!
Oh, I remember the time when I first listened to this album. I was 17, summer days in August and decided to listen to some nice old-school rock bands. One of my first picks was this album - and it has never disappointed me
Keywords: Unique drum lines, 70s rock, RANGE, Notable Song: Smoke on the Water
What a fookin banger
what can i say, this album has "Smoke on the Water" on it!
- The opening, Highway Star, really sets the mood for the album. It's fantastic. - Album keeps up with high energy throughout and then leaves you with "When A Blind Man Cries" at the end. - 10/10
90/100 Based on the following scale: 1 star - 0 to 19 2 stars - 20 to 39 3 stars - 40 to 59 4 stars - 60 to 79 5 stars - 80 to 100 Ah, Highway Star. I got a speeding ticket when this song came on, even though I was sitting at my desk. Some great songs with minimal filler. Great stuff! Oh, one reviewer called Blackmore's solos uninspired. I almost swallowed my tongue. Then, I looked at their history and had a laugh. Amazing album.
Put your headphones and run like there is no tomorrow.
Excellent! classic
Really enjoyed
Need to have a 6th star for this one!
Very pleasantly surprised. Tons of fun.
Awesome rock album. Personal favorites are Lazy and Highway star. Loaded with organ and I love Blackmore's guitar sound!
Classic. A couple of weaker tracks but Space Truckin, Highway Star, Smoke on the Water and Lazy are good enough to secure its 5* status for me
Great album, really enjoyed it. Obviously know the main hit but album was full of other ace songs.
One of Dad’s favorite albums. Amazingly complex and fun to turn up the volume and blast it.
Awesome
top
Great driving down the highway music! Love prog rock.
Classic hard rock!
Classic rock, pretty fun
Amazing! Every single song is a masterpiece. Definitely, adding it to my personal list of favourite albums!
total classic. Life changing!
A fun album. Most definitely will be adding it to rotation. No song is bad
DUN DUN DUN! DUN DUN DA-DUN!
good
This is the promised rock, this is what they promised us when they said Rock
Excellent album from start to finish. In fact, the only negative for me is that "Smoke on the Water" is on here and we've all heard that played a million times before. "Highway Star" is an excellent opening track and it just carries on from there.
First album from the list I already listened. Short and great album, not bad tunes at all, some songs get burned with time like Smoke on the water but some classics don't, like Pictures of Home, Space truckin, Highway star or When a blind man cries. 5*
Proto metal, with proggish elements and some of the best classic rock staples. Just makes 5 stars, but too many bangers
Gold!
happy birthday to me It’s my birthday. Fun. Anyways, Machine Head is a great early metal album, especially on the faster songs. ’Maybe I’m a Leo’ and ‘Never Before’ are my least favorite songs as a result of this. Also, ‘Smoke On The Water’ gets all the attention, but ‘Highway Star’ is the real best song. I will die on this hill. Anyway, hope I get a good birthday album.
I only recognized Smoke on the Water from the track listing but, oh!, Highway Star sure is familiar, as is Space Truckin'. I enjoyed rocking with all of this today!
Oh yeah! I LOVE Highway Star, Smoke on the Water, and Space Truckin’. Yet I have never before listened to a Deep Purple album. Well, glad that has been taken care of because this album kicks ass from start to finish! I also learned what Smoke On The Water was all about, a nice bonus. Terrific!
Deep Purple were actually a pretty respectable band back in the 1970s, decades before they became a comedy band. Lots of talent on display here from the classic Mk2 line up. This was a fun listen, where I knew half the tracks really well, but hadn't heard the other half much at all. I was expecting this to be a strong 4-star album, based on the fact that I predicted to find the tracks I hadn't heard before were all filler, but they weren't and this is a strong 5 star album.
An absolute classic of an album today! Smoke on the Water has a song riff that almost everyone who ever picks up a guitar learns early on. Apparently the recording studio that the band was to use in Switzerland burned down, leaving the band to seek out another space. The song Smoke on the Water is loosely based on that. Overall, a phenomenal album. Highway Star, Smoke on the Water, and Space Truckin' are all powerhouses. Not my first time listening to this record, and it won't be my last! Favourite songs: Highway Star, Smoke on the Water, Space Truckin', Maybe I'm a Leo, Pictures of Home Least favourite songs: Lazy 5/5
I was introduced to Highway Star by the game Rockband. I spent many hours during college in the Weenie Loft grinding on the plastic drum kit and I could never pull this song off on hard. It's a shame too because the song is fucking gas. Machine Head is an incredible rock album. The fact that these guys were shredding like this in 1972 makes me realize how little I understand the timeline of rock n' roll. My favorite song this listen = Lazy.
Classic
Funny this should be the first album, have been a massive Machine Head fan since their Burn My Eyes debut and am aware they named themselves after this album but have never actually listened to this record. That was a mistake. All I really knew about Deep Purple up to this point was Smoke on the Water. Opener is already sucking me right in. This is my type of album for sure.
Love Deep Purple, love this album. Will always be a classic
kickin'
Rating: 10/10
Magnificent
classics
As good as classic rock gets, full of riffs and leaves you wanting more. No hint of prog so no random noises or filler tracks to hide behind. Smoke on the water is a classic but I thought nearly all the other tracks were a similar level. Mint.
rock on, deep purple. i unfortunately thought that deep purple was overrated in my naivety, but these thirty-seven minutes have absolutely changed my mind. deep purple rocked their hardest on machine head. while i only knew two songs going in, i quickly realized that didn't matter. there was so much to enjoy and appreciate. each song has a significant instrumental section, and they are always unique and fascinating. also, that deep guitar opening "smoke on the water" melts your face off, which is just a statistical fact. with all of their instrumentals, they do come off sounding slightly progressive rock, which was just beginning to find its footing in 1972. with this album recorded in three weeks, there's a natural element found here. these songs don't contain quickly created, unpolished jam sessions. their instrumentals rock out hard and are polished but only to the point of still being natural. 4.5
I don't know what to say here that hasn't already been said; this album is really just killer. Deep Purple shaped hard rock and metal, and there's just no denying that; they were laying the groundwork in the 1970s with this and other albums. This album opens with such a bang and really just keeps the momentum for all ~40 minutes. There just isn't much at all that this album gets wrong, in my opinion, and there isn't much to say either, except for reiterating that this is a birthing ground for metal music and a fantastic example of a genius band not only pioneering the sound, but doing it so very right. This is about a 4.5 for me, but I see no reason not to round it up.
I mean, do I really have to say why this is a classic?
Really great classic rock.
Thank you Album Generator for having me listen to more Deep Purple. I loved the last loud, glorious album and obviously this one is also a monster. Perfectly pointless lyrics but riffs and licks for days.
By far my favourite purple album
Great album
old rock for old man
One of my dads favorites.
I had never listened to a full Deep Purple album prior to listening to this one. I was pleasantly surprised at how good this album was and how many songs that I knew. The bonus edition with "When a Blind Man Cries" makes me wonder why that song was left off the original album. This album definitely deserves to be on the list, mostly because the song was ahead of its time and there are four classic Deep Purple tracks on here.
Hard rock. Fantástico.
Masterful.
The guitar, the base the drums, the riffs. Classic 70s rock. Smoke on the water = iconic. Where tf did Lazy come from - minutes and minutes of unreal guitars. Last song also a highlight. 5 stars!
Super goed album.
A great classic album! Saved tracks: Highway Star, Pictures of Home, Smoke on the Water, Space Truckin’
So much musical energy. Unlike their name, the lyrics aren't all that deep (pretty juvenile). But as far as pumping rock goes, they have it in spades. Their big tunes all have it - Highway Star (frenetic drums and guitar pace and never has an organ been so bitchin), Smoke on the Water (it is so much more than its simple opening chords), Space Truckin (its hooks are so infectious). But the rest of the album holds up just as well - lots of heavy riffs and hooks to bring you in and the combination and integration of their instruments creates a sound that just fills your ears. Loved it.
Duhn-Duhn-DUUUHN, Duhn-Duhn-DuUUhn, Duhn-Duhn-DUUUHN, Duhn-Duuuhn. This. Album. Rawks!! A true hard rock classic. Crazy to think this is from 1972. Every song is great, but the standouts for me are Highway Star (Metal-precursor with an awesome organ solo. You heard that right), Maybe I'm a Leo (cool track), Never Before (lots of hard rock/metal cliches both lyrically and musically, but they were one of the first so they get a pass. Also worth noting how good all of the band members are throughout this album), Never Before (cool groove), Smoke on the Water (a classic for a reason. Great song that just gets stuck in your head. Before this listen I never paid attention to the lyrics or knew what they were about it. It's funny how literal they are about their experience of the Montreaux Casino burning down), Space Truckin' (another song that RAWKS and gets stuck in your head). Hmm, yes, I did just call almost every song a standout. Easy, easy 5.
Brilliant rock album
Classic rock album
Sensacional,
I have a memory of being maybe 4 years old in the back seat of the car when Smoke On the Water was probably relatively new / constantly on the radio and my dad just singing that riff over and over and over. Then years later - well before I could drive - my older cousin took me to see Deep Purple in Niagara Falls; seeing these legends up-close was pretty cool, except for when someone threw an M80 onto the stage and Ian Gillan got pissed and stopped singing to berate the idiot. Oh and it was so loud we couldn't even talk to each other on the way home. Memorable. As for Machine Head - this is DP at their absolute peak. 5 incredibly talented musicians who go well beyond any standard blues rock; venturing into jazz riffs so subtle as to not knock their train off the hard rock track. And they finally got it right with songwriting as well - good pacing and enough variety to make it always a good listen. Plus they recorded this in a hotel which is a few levels of awesome. Thing about this album ... it's kind of like Dwight Gooden's 1985 season. He/they are spoken of in legendary tones and had seemingly quickly reached a status few ever got to before and after.... but even with some great moments to come they never came close to anything like this again. As for the album it's not even 40 minutes long (perfect length) of what was for the time groundbreaking heavy driving music. The key to this band and especially on this album always was Jon Lord on the organ - so much of what I'd thought was guitar as a kid is actually him just cranked through distorted Marshall stacks. Also included: the most played (and most incorrectly-played) guitar riff of all-time. In sum: this is nonstop excellence. Enjoy the 1.53 ERA while it lasted. 10/10 5 stars
Anything with Lazy and When a Blind Man Cries on it is exceptional to start with. Then add the rock standards of Highway Star and Space Trucking. Mix in Smoke on the Water and you have a guarenteed classic. The only question that remains is whether it is better than In Rock - a question that, 50 years later, still does not have a definitive answer.
New
Already listened to this one and it’s quite my thing so I’ll definitely listen again
Undisputed classic of an album with an undisputed classic of a certain song. Surely "Smoke On The Water" must have one of the most recognizable riffs in guitar history. Pretty neat that this album is also 50 years old now. Just some excellent 70s hard rock. Favourite: Smoke On The Water
'Smoke On The Water', 'Highway Star' and 'Lazy' are great songs. The whole album is pure Rock & Roll. 5/5
This is a fantastic album. Highway Star is just amazing and the rest holds up as well. One of those times I'm not rolling my eyes at the "classic rock" in this list. 5/5.
5 Star Deep Purple Album. Big overlap with Made in Japan but the studio album is much better.
Excelente
Highway Star is my new favorite song!
Reading some of the other reviews I'm struck by how tastes differ and how being an originator matters little now. To me though this is a virtuoso performance that never ages and each listen reveals new nuances. Simply one of the best.
Loads of fun and it sounds great. Early metal mixed with a little bit of prog and a lot of groove. Warra rhythm section dat was den
Awesome classic, prime Deep Purple.
Classic
This hit the spot. I needed some early 70's heavy metal on this Friday. "Machine Head" is the sixth studio album from Deep Purple. The band wanted a different recording environment since they felt they had been unable to capture their live performance sound up to then in the studio. So, they rented The Rolling Mobile Studio and were taking it to the Monteaux Casino after it closed for the winter season. However, at the last concert for the season, a Frank Zappa one at that, the casino burnt down. The band actually watched from nearby, saw it up in flames with smoke pouring off and across Lake Geneva. And, this was the inspiration and story to their most popular song "Smoke on the Water." They finally ended up recording at The Grand Hotel in Switzerland with a bunch of sound-insulating mattresses and inconveniences which irritated the band. Nonetheless, they recorded a great album. This is put in the hard rock/heavy metal category and is considered one of early heavy metal albums. I also caught a jam band-type style in a few of the songs. The first side starts ablazin' with the driving "Highway Star." One of the great opening songs ever. Great Ritchie Blackmore guitar and guitar solo. Great organ too. Fast Car, hot girl...Let's Rock! The first side ends with another driving song "Pictures of Home." Apparently, it's about the band missing home during the recording. Guitar, bass, organ and drum solos. Check. The second side begins begins with their first single "Never Before" which was released first since it was thought to be their most commercial song. A decent song although my least favorite on the album. It sounds like a pretty standard rock song for the time. And then we come to "Smoke on the Water" with probably one of the most recognized guitar intros and riffs in rock history. I always loved the drumming too. The album ends with my two favorite songs on the album and both to me have a jam-band feel. Heavy metal jam band if that's a possible category. "Lazy" was their second single and has a bluesy feel with the organ and guitar. Great guitar intro. The album ends with the science fiction-themed "Space Truckin.'" This song just grooves and, yes my head was bobbin.' This album pretty much sizzles from start to finish. It has very straight-forward lyrics which I appeciated. A classic in its precursor to heavy metal category and rightfully in the 1,001 list.
This album is very influential and is considered one of the most important hard rock/heavy metal albums of all time. That hard rock label doesn’t quite do this album a service as it contains jazz rhythms, acrobatic almost funk like bass, and guitar that utilizes scales and modes outside the minor pentatonic. It’s thoughtfully crafted and is a lot of fun to listen to.
It was a while since I listened to Machine Head for the last time. This is one of the albums I grew up to, so I have really fond memories of most of it's songs, but I recalled it being a bit more consistently "high energy". Not saying that tracks like Lazy or When a Blind Man Cries are bad, but there is such a high contrast with Highway Star and Pictures of Home for example that it kind of tames down the whole album pace. Smoke on The Water still sounds great despite being the single most overly-reproduced rock song. That said, this is still one of the most important records of my life, it shaped my taste in music and had it's part on leading me to be who I am today, and hadn't it been for the nostalgia, it probably wouldn't go as far as 5 stars, but I can't help myself.
An understandable classic. From the opening of Highway Star to the last note of Space Truckin’ this is only 38 minutes and it’s fantastic.
Been listening to this album since high school, just a classic rock album. The mkII lineup sounds the most cohesive on this album but I think I prefer In Rock and the rawness of that album to this. The biggest issue is the overplay of some of these songs over the last 50 years, Highway Star and Smoke on the Water I just don't ever want to hear again.
I loved Smoke on the Water, until my guitar teacher pointed out how mundane the subject matter is (there was literally smoke on the water!). But this album has rekindled things between me and DP. It's proper, straightforward rock that never becomes too cheesy or indulgent.
If you don't like Deep Purple, then you should be deaf.
capelu on the ear
Amazing
Smoke On The Water tem um riff excelente.
Now THIS is rockin! Is it me or does nobody ever discuss how FUNKY this band is? Most British bands don’t get this down and dirty part of the blues right, but DP can really stir it. And don’t even get me started on John Lord’s Hammond playing.
Sube a 5. Songs: Highway Star, Space Truckin', When A Blind Man Cries y pues sí, Smoke.
Space Truckin' is one of my favourite songs and Smoke On the Water is so iconic but I didn't know the story so that was pretty cool to learn. Highway Star is a great opener.
I should have listened to this before. Cool stuff.
Eixo que encaminhou o rock pesado.
Masterpiece!
Oh poi c'è 'Smoke on the water', il voto è scontato. E 'Lazy'? Wow!
I like it
An absolute powerhouse of an album, with some fantastic riffs and driving bass lines. Some highlights (not including the better known hits) include Lazy; an absolute banger with a mesmerising organ part, and Never Before; with an intro so good you can't help but pull that stanky face! Top album, definitely going into rotation!
Highway star Smoke on the water Lazy When a blind man cries Chef d'oeuvre
This album was definitely ahead of its time in sound and musicianship when compared to other works of 1972. They sound like a crossroads between Zeppelin and the metal that is to come. Several massive songs throughout with great mastery of their respective instruments.
Hotter than a pepper duel, each instrument plays out of its skin and is so well recorded. Every track a cracker
Some of the best head I've ever gotten
DP at their best
Great Rock album. Love highway star for sure. A bit more upbeat and high energy than deep purple in rock, but still excellent!
BEEF
Great!
Probably a 4 for me overall, but the intro to highway star as the intro for the album bumps it up to a 5. Loved the back half of Lazy
It’s not metal but it’s damn close! Legendary and amazing album
Every track on this record kicks ass
Now we have a classic rock album! Every song is great, Maybe I’m a Leo is probably my favorite.
Great old fashioned Hard Rock
Classic album. This is an essential album for rock lovers, there's nothing much else to say
A classic
What more could be said about this landmark album? It's just great, and a pillar of the development of Rock and Roll during the 1970's. Highway Star and Smoke on the Water are the ones everybody should/will know, but the rest of the album is just stellar too.
Płyta z hiciorami, ale też kilka słabszych. Lepiej posłuchać już Made in Japan
A classic
Une classique 5*
Very good work. The bests are highway star, never before, smoke on the water, lazy and when a blind man cries.
Own it, love it.
Rock & Roll del viejo. Dos megahits.
One of the most iconic rock albums of all time, and rightly so given that it contain the definitive guitar riff. But there is a lot more to Machine Head than just Smoke on the Water. The whole album is a master class of technicality and versatility. Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord combine spectacularly throughout with their relentless solos and catch riffs and Ian Gillan is on top form also. Highway Star, Pictures of Home, Lazy, Space Truckin are all classics - making this a classic album in the truest sense.
Perfect commute album. The driving instrumental and booming vocals just makes you feel cool as you sit stagnate in bumper-to-bumper traffic.
Highway Star - Classic song, good for an opener. High tempo, great solo, just a fun energetic tune. Maybe I'm a Leo - More of a jam, lots of distortion but almost a funk melody to it. Good tune. Pictures of Home - Quick drum solo to open. More of a wailing tune, some Kiss vibes in the vocals. Not bad, but weaker than the previous two. Long instrumental to finish that's very solid. Never Before - Back to the funk, very similar to song two. Good tempo, definite bop. Smoke on the Water - Needs no review, it's the Deep Purple song. Lazy - Very spacy opening. Almost like In a Gadda da Vita, then gets into a high energy dueling guitars instrumental. Space Truckin' - Great tune, heard this one on the radio but didn't know it was Deep Purple. Overall - Great album, lots of jams, front to back pretty consistent and solid with great instrumentals.
I will always love a Ritchie Blackmore project. All of the riffs on this album are perfect, the anthems are anthemic, and Deep Purple continues to be one of my favorite rock/hard rock bands of all time. While all the tracks could be considered highlights, the abbreviated list is: 1, 3, 4, 5, and 7.
Nach wie vor super
Well I have listened to this a number of times, starting out strong!
Actually very good. I always thought about Deep Purple as having their moments but not really interesting to me in general. But I enjoyed this album way more than I expected. The playing is quite 'tight' but technical at the same time. Definitely reevaluating DP and will listen to them again.
Need to catch up on this one
Mood: On the road again.
Classic rock album. Essential listening, though you should have heard the hits already.
Easily Deep Purple's best album. Classic
tanta nt atn atna tant
I love it I need it
pog and the album has more good stuff than just smoke on the water
Deep Purple is one of my all time favorite bands. This album will definitely be a 5 star rating
Crunchy fun
Highway star and smoke on the water how could it not get 4 stars
If you are an intellectual like me you will first and foremost enjoy the splendid lyrics on this album. But if you're more like a raw and simple man you'll just enjoy the riffs and ignore the lyrics. oh and: SMOOOOOKE on the WAAATEEEEEEER I'll try this guitar part in my guitar store!
4.5 maybe only halfpoint for being pretty samey, but all pretty good with a couple all time hits.
Not as boundary=pushing as Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath, but good heavy blues-driven rock.
Pretty classic and fairly underrated album. It is a soft 4 IMO.
Highway Star and Smoke on the Water are both iconic songs. But the album as a whole stands up decently well. I would say that these hits carry it above the average though.
Classic hard rock ./,,/
Cool
This album sounded great and the lyrics were sometimes fun and other times about deep topics. I enjoyed the album.
The songs were great overall, and "Smoke on the Water," in particular, was legendary. It reminded me of a time I had listened to it for a music class assessment in the past.
Excellent album of heavy rock indicative of the period . Long live Rock
Haven't heard a rock album in so long. Forgot how they felt. It was ok to listen to in the start but I can't lie if I say that the songs started getting to me and they sounded banger. Second half was damn good. Solid album and can listen again. Songs I liked : Highway star Smoke on the water Lazy Space truckin Review - 8/10
Cool songs, nice and varied instrumentation. I actually listened to this quite a lot when I was a child, because my dad is a big fan of the album.
The opening riff of Smoke on the Water is so iconic... I had no clue who this band was, but it was a surprisingly nice listen! Which says a lot coming from someone who doesn't listen to rock at all
A classic album that really helped progress metal into the mainstream. A little basic but still so well executed
Not special
My first exposure to Deep Purple aside from Smoke on the Water and Hush. I gotta say I really liked this one. It's oozing with that early metal sound that I've come to love. Highway Star is another great track and I'll be loading it into a more regular rotation. Another good surprise from the list.
heerlijk gitaarwerk
Hell yeah, I've needed an album of bangers
One of Deep Purple's best albums. I am a fan.
An incredible rock album. Legendary riffs, few but impactful vocals. Smoke and Highway alone would make this worth a listen, but Space Trucker and Liar slap so much. A perfect album for road tripping and speeding.
All about the riffs. Better than I was expecting.
Very good instrumentals, good music, more interesting than most
uh been a few days but remember liking it
Good stuff! Almost wall to wall bangers
A very enjoyable album. I am now sold on the concept of going space truckin', although I am not sure exactly what that entails.
Early days of metal
good metal
Smoke on the water is iconic. Highway Star is fun. Nice album in total.
This dumb, relentless thing was my absolute favorite record when I was 14 years old; I listened to it so incessantly at the time that I can still sing along with it all these decades later. For a couple months in 1972, between that and the original soundtrack of "Jesus Christ Superstar" I probably heard Ian Gillan singing more than anyone else on the planet. Anyway sure, the lyrics are dumb, but the guitar and bass are pretty fun - I can see why then-me loved it. "Nobody's gonna take my head, I got speed inside my brain"? That's right sir, you do you.
epic
Not huge into metal/hard rock, but this album was great. I'm a sucker for longer songs, where the instrumental changes, so this was up my alley. Beautiful riffs, and hearing Smoke on The Water after reading where it came from was cool.
Wow! Everyone knows "Smoke on the Water", but holy hell I didn't realize "Space Truckin'" was Deep Purple. What a great song! What a fun album!
I thoroughly enjoyed the album(hence, my rating), but because I already listened to one of their live albums(you know, THAT album), I was a little disappointed. Again, it's still fun riffs, and good classic Rock music though. Favorite Track: "Smoke On The Water".
Just great rock. What more can you say!
I know this album was like a precursor to heavy metal. So far it's pretty good but nothing I'm super excited about. There are some good and heavy jams on it. This is a rockin' album even though it doesn't really speak to me. I think it's pretty good I enjoyed it overall but not sure I would ever put it on.
fun, driving rock. awesome guitars. iconic songs. the organ & keys! favorite songs: listen SotW is an anthem but Highway Star and SPACE TRUCKIN'?? lets gooo.
Although not their best album (for me) this is still a good album, with Highway Star and Smoke on the Water being iconic tracks.
now this is jojo
I was never the biggest fan of this or Deep Purple, but listening for the first time in years....it's fun, well played of course, and more enjoyable than most of the more modern rock entries.
Lekkaaah
Second Deep Purple lp and this is way better. The other one was live somewhere and had drum solos etc. This was tighter and had excellant riffs. I must admit not the biggest dan of the high pitched sceaming but that is the way of heavy rock singers. All in all enjoyable.
Apart from smoke on the wate, one of the most overplayed songs ever. A good album.
The live versions on Made in Japan are looser, more impactful
