This was a fun one. Not too original but still what I like so I'm gonna give it a 4
Very good
Evan Dando has such a great voice
This was a huge album for me back in that time. Listened to it so many times. Was a pleasure to revisit this one. 4.5
Quality 90s rock, may come off as cliche now but I think that’s cause it made a very re-used mold.
A record that came out the year I was born. It's so 90s. The lyric "I've never been too good with names, but I remember faces" resonates with me. I'm a sucker for the 90s alt rock sound but all these songs sound exactly the same. Amazing Mrs. Robinson cover.
Has there ever been an alt-rock album that was more alt-rock than this? This 100% feels like an album that I would have picked up at the South Jordan City Library thinking it was a harder punk album, but then it was an alt-rock album. And since loading up your iPod with as many songs as it would hold was a point of pride for 13 year old Blake, I would have proudly thrown this on my iPod. I would have only listened to it a few times all the way through, but I would absolutely listen to "It's a Shame About Ray," "Kitchen, "My Drug Buddy," and the "Mrs. Robinson" cover often. To be honest, I might have had this on my 80 gig iPod. This is such genre music and totally feels like something that would have ended up on an iPod somewhere. I can't confirm though, so we'll just say this was first go around with this record. Though, I have heard "It's a Shame About Ray." What a classic song. Also, the "Mrs. Robinson" shows up in so many movies. (Most recently The Wolf of Wall Street.) This was great! I love how fun it was. I like how they included some country rock elements (slide guitars and bluesy riffs), cool percussion, and fun vocal melodies. This just feels like summer time. I had a blast with this one.
Danceable and high-energy 90's alt-rock mixed with melodic acoustic tunes. Tight and well-produced. Bonus - nostalgic Simon & Garfunkel cover. Listening to the 30th anniversary release with a dozen acoustic demos - all first class. Enjoyable album. Added to favorites.
This is a fantastic album, one that I’d probably give five stars after some more listens. I’ve listened to it before and liked it a lot, which isn’t a surprise as I’m a sucker for a good jangly rock song with good writing. There’s a ton of charisma here and it sounds great from start to finish. The cover of Mrs. Robinson is an obvious highlight, but the title track and several others are great too and I don’t hear a bad song. Goo Goo Dolls surely owe some credit to this one for the massive Dizzy Up The Girl album a few years later. Lemonheads are a bit of a “what could have been” band, but this was a really great contribution to music in the early 90’s.
very fun 90's indie stuff. nice mix of all sorts of sounds with jangly guitars all the way through
I always did like my nineties music to be on the jangly side. A great album for a summer walk.
Reminds me of early years in Boulder. Like they must have done a Studio C, right?
I never listened to The Lemonheads but this sounds like some other things I liked. I had a good time.
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this. I normally find dad rock to be kind of plain and repetitive a lot of the time. This album starts off that way, but a few songs in, they start to mix it up with some good solos and dynamic rhythms within and between songs. It's also just full of heart. I still don't see myself putting this on often, but for those good occasions, I think it'll hit the spot.
This album feels like the 90s. Personal enjoyment 4/5 Relevance to this list: 3/5
I liked this alright. I never gave the Lemonheads much attention in the 90's, but had heard some stuff here and there like their cover of Mrs. Robinson. I never realized Juliana Hatfield was in the Lemonheads; someone else I haven't thought of in decades, but should go revisit. 3.5/5
I was worried this would be bad, but actually it was good! I like the short length of the songs and it sorta reminds me of Dinosaur Jr, but I think I like this more. 3.75/5
Actually really enjoyed this album - thought they sounded great and a few of their songs were pretty solid. Of course, one of the best covers ever in Mrs. Robinson, too. 7/10.
An absolute low rent masterpiece. Nothing earth shattering, just an album about hanging out that has a delicious pace, great tunes, and seemingly sung with a smile. And then there’s Alison’s starting to happen - such a wonderfully articulated song about perception about someone in your group changing to desire. 4.5 / 5
what a vibe
It’s an ok album, short and simple. But it doesn’t really separate itself from others with this sound. Doesn’t really do much for me. It had a few good tracks though. It’s ok.
Loved this album when it was released and still sounds great today!
I liked a lot of the songs on this album but I wasn't totally sure about Evan Dando's voice. It sounds a bit as if a rock band brought in a singer who was more attuned to solo acoustic instrumentation than rock/punk. It's an interesting dynamic, but I'm not sure it worked perfect for me. Again, there were a lot of songs I liked and I should probably revisit the entire album. I enjoyed reading about the band's experiences with all these other larger acts that aren't that well-known. I also thought it was awesome that Dando helped write "The Last High" with The Dandy Warhols! Such a great song.
Daumen hoch, das macht Spaß!
A classic 90s album with that classic 90s sound.
Wasn’t aware of the Lemonhead before, another cool discovery from this list right on album nr. 1001! Very solid poppy indie rock
A 90s classic but still holds up. 3.5 for me
Love this sound. Makes me feel silly.
Really liked this! Vibey and cool quick short songs.
I really dug this album! They sounded so familiar do it was a pleasant surprise to hear Mrs Robinson. I loved the very late 90s sounds, seemed right out of Empire Records! Only complaint is that songs blended together and didn't really distinguish between each other
I really enjoyed this. There were some songs where I wanted them to rock a little harder and belt out the lyrics a little louder, but it still had a good energy. Lots of catchy tunes and overall a super fun listen!
Now this is some fun stuff right here. Too bad about Ray, though. Friggin Ray.
Liked this a lot classic American early 90s stuff
Listening to this reminds me of the Sunday of Glastonbury 93, feeling very chilled on a lovely sunny day and a bit off my face. Perfect memories. This is such a good album which I just don't play too often. I remember it sounding far too polished back then, but it's aged well. I adore the title track, it's beautifully done. 'Confetti', 'Rudderless', all the songs are excellent. BUT, then there is the single which didn't feature on the original release, which is included on my CD copy, its still a great cover. A high 4.
I don't think there's anything exceptional about this album, but I was driving around while it was sunny out with the windows down and the album just hit the spot. Easy to listen to, solid enough song writing and a pretty quick pace. There are some more heartfelt moments on the album which I thought came across as really sincere and kept my interest. I think I'll add this to any future drives where I need some tunes!
Felt refreshing and fun. Felt like summer vacation.
Starts off with an awesome sound; bopping, sharp guitar rock with a nice tone, smooth, cutting vocals, nice happy riffs. Some twangy steel guitar was an unexpected delight. I'd heard the Mrs. Robinson cover many times before but never knew it was by the Lemonheads -- great tune. Overall very cool vibe, really enjoyed listening. Four stars.
Alternative rock. The Lemonheads have an interesting mix of punk and pop sensibilities -- I knew a couple of their songs but had never listened to an entire album. Musicianship is solid but not elite, the vocals are better than that with a really clear, warm tone and good phrasing. Songwriting is excellent with lots of interesting chord structures, themes and lyrics. The title track is easily the best song on the album (though their almost-punk cover of Mrs. Robinson was the biggest hit) but Rockin Stroll, My Drug Buddy & Hannah and Gabi are all good as well. Glad I got a chance to delve deeper into this band's catalog.
It was a catchy album. i liked it
I always thought this album was underrated a bit especially since everyone knows the cover song/closer that wasn't actually on the original track list. The best song is the cover unfortunately, but this album has some great songs as well and worth a listen, especially if you love the 90s.
Jangly power pop in the mold of Big Star. Good but derivative.
I was surprised with how good this album is. the guitar work and music is fresh and interesting. A bit ramshackle but tight. I think the album feels a little like an adolescent looking to move to maturity fighting its way through. Almost a 5 for me.
I JUST WANT A BIT PART IN YOUR LIFE. I love that snippet. This has some great songs. I own the album (CD), so it was not new to me. Happy to see it included in the 1001.
Quintessential jangly, strummy 90’s alt-rock. Love the sound, love the simplicity that showcases a real songwriting talent. Big fan of the guitar tones, especially the rhythm guitars that sound like either an amplified acoustic, or an electric guitar meant to sound acoustic. Julianna Hatfield is great here, especially whenever she contributes some nice backing vocals. This is a clear touchstone that I’ve managed to miss out on over all these years, happy to begin rectifying that!
I imagine Mrs. Robinson and Mrs. Jackson knew each other. Women in their late 60's they go to book club together, bake together, talk about how their husbands were before the war and wear terrible flower print dress' only.
What a trip to the past. Not my favorite albums of theirs, but still great.
It's pleasant alright. I don't have a strong connection to this though and may be too old to picture myself in something this would be the soundtrack to. A friendly Meh+ from me.
1. 3.8 2. 4.1 3. 3.8 4. 3.8 5. 3.9 6. 3.3 7. 3.7 8. 3.6 9. 3.6 10. 3.4 11. 3.2 12. 2 13. 3.6 14. 4.2
Only knowing this band in name only, this was a pleasent surprise, reminding me a lot of stuff I like. Very solid, melodic power pop with some real beautiful moments with some weird teeth. It starts to run out of steam a little by the final quarter but the less memorable songs could grow on me. Not a huge fan of the Simon & Garfunkel cover but still fun in the end.
YESSSS I LOVE THE LEMONHEADS 🫶🫶 this is a relisten i love this album since i found them from the cameo on the goldbergs. theyre like if nirvana had an indie stoner baby 4.5/5
Enjoyed it very much, heard this album one time before(didn't liked it), but now, awesome chill 90s alt-rock/indie album. 4/5. Favourite song(s): "Confetti", "It's a Shame About Ray", "Rudderless", "My Drug Buddy", "Bit Part", "Kitchen", "Frank Mills".
Any group or music from the '90s wasn't on my radar, since I watched Disney movies and Barney episodes on VHS that decade. I enjoyed this album and would listen to it again.
Has alot of good songers and is high energy
Great listenability. Not one noticeable bad song within. Mrs Robinson being sexy as always. 4 stars.
Мој жанр и епоха, плус један велики хит Mrs. Robinson
Good! I loved the first bit of the album instantly, then it fell off, but then it bounced back on! Zen vocals, fuzzy instrumentals. Fantastic to listen to on a rainy day like today.
Good
This was a fun listen, very radio friendly grunge but it's pretty cool, there's not many stand out tracks on this but it was worth listening to for sure.
I'm a sucker for these early 90s alternative rock albums. The vocal on Confetti sounds like it could have been on one of Elvis Costello's first two records. And the Mrs. Robinson cover is iconic now.
A solid 90’s alternative record. Another one I think I would have really enjoyed in high school. It felt nostalgic even though I have never heard of the band before.
Quintessential jangly 90's pop...shades of the Smiths in some of the vocals
Melodischer abwechslunsreicher Indie-Rock.
My main point of reference with the Lemonheads is the Mrs Robinson cover, which didn't appear on the original release of this album. Still, what's on it is that same sun-soaked thoughtful indie rock very muc of the early 90s. Good stuff
A few good songs. Definitely represents the alternative genre of the time.
It’s a very likable album; accessible and a bit catchy with bits of dissonance here and there in that old college rock way. Enjoyable, but I’m not sure why it’s on the list.
Catchy and fun. 4/5
3.5/5
He kinda shoulda sorta woulda loved her if he could’ve, the story is getting closer to the end.
Really good album full of nice songs, like “Rockin’ Stroll” and “It’s a Shame About Ray”.
The purest distillation of the 90s
Great album, and great great mix too. I normally hate a flattened sound but yeah this is killer.
I love this album. Probably way more than I should. Because this excels at almost nothing. It doesn’t go above and beyond in any particular category. The lyrics aren’t life changing. The guitar playing isn’t mind blowing. It does nothing to prove itself to the listener. And yet, that is that makes me love it so much. It thrives in its own simplicity and plainness, and just exists. It reminds me of that weird uncle in your family, who you are not even sure has a job, but you can’t not love him. There are only three people playing on this, and something I really liked is when the bass player would come in with backing vocals. Her voice is really sweet, so it adds an extra layer of warmth to the music, especially on songs like My Drug Buddy. I found it hard to really dislike this. The album doesn’t try to be anything it isn’t, and just gives you all that it’s got. Rating: 8/10
A really great melody writer and an album that improves towards the end
Really fun. Never really listened to them before
I didn’t expect to like this as much as I did. It has a classic 90s feel to it that I really enjoy.
Fun, soft, gentle, and cute! I liked this one. My favorites were My Drug Buddy and the cover of Mrs. Robinson.

3.5. This is a great example of alt rock.
Liked it fine, but the rating is bumped up because the version linked to happened to be the extended edition. I liked the demos way way more than the actual versions, although that’s of course just my shitty music taste. If it was just those it could be a 5. Favourite song Bit Part.
OK, so this is the first album on this thing that I am immediately replaying. It may just be that I’m a sucker for Indie Rock, but I felt like I had more connection to the songs after one listen than I did to the other albums I’ve listened to so far, there were song where I could pick out a hook, something that engaged me and let me identify the song, which I’ve not felt with the records so far. Maybe I just like short albums. This is less than half an hour, two of the albums I’ve listened to so far have been double albums and the other was Depeche Mode, which draaaaaaagged
Love the casual kind of rock sound, jammin out and telling stories
I feel like the Lemonheads embody what the Beatles would sound like in the 90s, it's a refreshing type of older pop rock
good nineties music
Not bad...
Favourite tracks: it's a shame about ray; my drug buddy
Lovely bit of sad grunge made me wanna commit
Heard of the band, but never knowingly listened to anything they'd produced. A little too recent for me to get into and on the wrong side of the ocean. I quite enjoyed it though. Nothing really, really catchy to grab me and force me to want to listen to this really regularly, but all good enough to be enjoyable and I out it on more than once, which is always a good sign. I like it. With time I could even grow to love this. So 4 stars I suppose.
It's fine, inoffensive, straight ahead rock and roll. Solid but nothing particularly interesting or distinctive. I see no reason it should be on this list. However I did enjoy it all the way through. This album is like Doritos, everyday fare but still, you know, yummy. 3.5 rounding up for being upbeat.
Listened to this once and thought okay, nice. Gave it a second chance and then listened to it on repeat for 3 days. Really love the demos. Good stuff
Probably a 3.5. Catchy enough music, and it was refreshing after I listened to a few albums I didn't really like today.
A solid, fun album. Not all the tracks are standouts but the highlights are REAL high for me.
They sound like a less experimental, more straightforward REM. This album is a little too safe/watered down for my taste but they're not bad. Better second half than first. 3.5 stars but I'll round up to 4.
Didn't understand the appeal of that album at the time. I found it little too predictable and "middle-of-the-road". But decades later, here I am revising my former harsh judgement, thanks to this app. I still think The Lemonheads were treading on old ground once covered by REM or Husker Dü with this album. But in 2023 such a minor flaw doesn't matter a lot. A lot of the songs are effective, and prove that Evan Dando's craft was respectable and even stellar at times, even if the production values vary from "anachronic charming" to "anachronic quaint" . By the way, the barebones acoustic versions of those tunes, put in the bonus tracks of the "collector's version", dont have those dated production issues I've just evoked. Here is where you can truly appreciate those songs for what they truly are, and I advise everyone curious about this album to listen to them as well. 4/5 Number of albums left to review: 624 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 185 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 85 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 113
Enjoyed this more than I expected to - not groundbreaking but some fun drumming over a pretty classic 90s guitar sound. Title track is the favourite once again - 3 and a half stars.
Liked it! Classic 90s!
Maybe 4.5 stars. Mrs Robinson, the opening track, and a few others are really well done
Really enjoyed this one. Highlights include title track, Confetti, Rudderless, Hannah & Gabi. Scrubs soundtrack-esque.
I really liked it. A bit too busy to review it properly, since I’m going on vacation. But it was very good and I’m happy to have heard it. Especially loved the demos, something about them that just make ‘em better! 4 out of 5, easy.
Solid 90s
Very good album, Mrs Robinson remains one of my favourite songs of all time
My preferred Lemonheads album is ' car, button, cloth', but this one a close second
I honestly wasn't expecting much from this album, but there is something about it. It's clearly an alternative rock album, but I would have guessed that it was made a few years later because there were a lot of albums that sound like this around 1995ish. For 1992, this album feels like it has a very mature style of alternative rock. The album flies by pretty fast, with lots of short songs. They have a great pop feel to them, and the combination of acoustic and electric guitars gives the album a very rich sound. The production is also excellent. The album has a very clean feel 4/5, sort of an underrated gem from the early alternative rock era
This is just great. The title track and My Drug Buddy are the standout tracks, that any songwriter of the past forty years would be proud of. Ably supported by a consistent slate of short, sharp blasts of early-90s grungy pop. Four stars. Didn't need to even mention that cover.
90s alt/indie rock. Not very original but a fun short album Saved tracks: It’s A Shame About Ray, My Drug Buddy, Bit Part, Mrs. Robinson
Good easy listening Classic 90s Alt/indie pop A real refined sounds Songs flow into each other making it an easy listen
I can see why a lot of people don't like this, and I can also acknowledge that it's not very impressive on a technical or production level. But, it hits my nostalgia centers so hard. I didn't even listen to this band growing up, but this sound is what my childhood sounded like. It's attacking all the soft spots in my brain and I am powerless to resist. Isn't that what music is, anyway? Something that tickles your brain and activates your memories?
muy divertido, no conocia
Good
I was pleasantly surprised by this album. I enjoyed both the album and demo versions of the songs. As far a grunge goes, this was more towards the pop end of the spectrum. But that's probably why I liked it vs. if it was hardcore grunge. Scale: 5 - My absolute favorites. 4 - Albums I like. 3 - I enjoyed listening to it but wouldn't seek it out. 2 - Didn't like. 1 - Absolute shit.
This was good, probably will listen again maybe
Enjoyable, easy-listening alt rock album. The songs have a happy vibe to them, similar to the pop-punk of the early 2000s, which made the difference for me between 3 and 4 stars
Evan Dando has/has an amazing voice for the 90's genre. It is reminiscent of Paul Westerberg's. Fast paced songs, ballads, etc...Evan could do it all.
catchy power pop melodies abound in this excellent album of pop punk, indie-rock. The songs are instantly catchy and familiar, but they also stand up as good dongs under further scrutiny. Confetti, the title track and Rudderless make side one an almost perfect 17 minutes or so of pop perfection. Side 2 does not see much of a drop off. There's even a nice if inconsequential cover of Mrs. Robinson to end things on a happy note. 4.5 stars
Fun album, reminds me of something from the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack. Might listen to this one again, but not quite on the regular rotation playlist level.
Nostalgia. All the indie kid girls I was friends with at school fancied Evan Dando, and who can blame them. Really enjoyed this today. Enjoy Juliana Hatfield popping her head in with the backing vocals.
7/10
Ok
Honestly lovely effortless pop. Not much else to say really.
7/10. Nice little album, glad it wasn't longer though.
Really nice chill alt-rock album. Enjoyed this on a Sunday morning.
a lot of fun
I dig this album a lot actually. Very cool 90s sound. 4 stars
Alison's starting to happen to me!
It's a shame about Evan Dando?
This is a hidden gem in my eyes. I hear many different genres being incorporated in this record. Alternative rock, folk, punk, even some emo tinges (see: Bit Part). I really enjoyed this album and I can hear influences on bands like the Foo Fighters, Nirvana, and Modern Baseball.
7,5/10
Like it. Yes it is similar to a lot of the genre. But it’s my genre
I thought this album was pretty good, though maybe a little repetitive as far as albums go, and maybe saying something that my favourite song was a cover. Favourite: Mrs. Robinson
Rocked pretty hard for being largely acoustic.
Enjoyable! Have always liked their cover of Mrs. Robinson.
I really like drug buddy, and there's some other decent stuff, but not all of it hits. I'll give it a 4 because of how much I like its best stuff
I've always said that if I had to choose a single decade's worth of music to listen to, I'd go with the '90s. This record is just one example of why. Is it much different from a lot of other albums during that time? No, but so what! The more the merrier, I say! My only qualm is that most songs are too short, barely two minutes long so by the time you fully get into the track, it's already over. Weird choice but okay Lemonheads. You're still good in my book. In fact, better inject the title track, Rudderless, My Drug Buddy & The Turnpike Down directly into my veins!
Good album, Frank Mills is nice and of course Mrs. Robinson 4/5
an album that for some reason makes me happy. pure 90s vibes. some tracks are a bit repetitive, but I love it.
Iron Maiden vibes. Rockig.
better than I remembered.
Have not listened to The Lemonheads a lot, but I liked this album, especially the title track. Nice, clean guitar work and vocals, sometimes that is all you need. The album rocked, but i did I appreciate the acoustic and slide guitar that appeared, however minimally.
god but its not for me
Not just the hits, but the deep cuts are laced with pop influences
Evan Dando and his beautiful head of hair knows how to craft perfect pop songs. He's proof that all of us gorgeous people can be talented, too. Bonus points for the appearance of the underappreciated Juliana Hatfield, and that terrific cover of Mrs. Robinson.
Very mid-90s. Gets better with repeated listens. Best track: Mrs. Robinson
Really good stuff.
Never heard about these guys before. Nothing really special and I probably won't revisit it. But I enjoyed this as a very solid alternative rock album. Fun to listen to and not too abrasive for background listening while working. 3.5 rounded up.
Pretty good, definitely my style
this is the album i’ll play in my car when i try to romance 90s matthew lillard
90's gold, Evan Dando is effortlessly cool.
Rock alternativo
Hotter than a yeti’s Bahamas tour. Really easy to listen to
Really 90s alt-rock. Fun to listen to and each song is nice and short which is always a plus. 3.5/5
I only vaguely recalled this one. It’s really enjoyable. I also was unaware that Juliana Hatfield was the bass player on it.
This is something I will be listening to again, adding to my collection. I knew a couple of tracks, most obviously the cover of Mrs. Robinson which apparently wasn't even on the original release. Did not know Julianna Hatfield was part of this as well. Always loved the album Become What You Are by her...so this is just a nice add on.
an alternative rock album with clear punk/postpunk influences, lyrics are well written and the mrs robinson cover is great
Most of it was really good, but it dropped off in the end for me. I prefer Simon and Garfunkel's version of Mrs. Robinson over this one, but it's not bad.
I only knew them from the two singles that were everywhere. This was a good listen. Some quality 90s pop/rock.
Typical early 90s alt/college rock. If I was a couple of years older, I probably would've been really into them. As it is, it's a good album, one I'm glad I listened to, and one I'll go back and listen to again. I'm sure they were on a bunch that I can't think of at the moment, but I can just see in my head the number of indie/Miramax movies from the 90s that would've used some of these songs on the soundtracks.
I enjoyed. Could hear many bands in them that they obviously have influenced. But did get a bit samey after a while.
-That riff in "Rockin' Stroll" sounds like "The Trooper" by Iron Maiden -I totally interpreted the lyrics of "Frank Mills" to say that George Harrison was a drummer ("He was last seen with his friend, a drummer / He resembles George Harrison of The Beatles") -Pretty nice alternative rock
Love the lemonheads, but this is my first time with this album. Love the title track, Evan Dando's signature vocals are great as usual, and there lyricism and pure pop/punk reminiscent of cotemporaries Greenday but I feel they have a more artful/literary bent with songs that tell real stories. Love "Rockin Stroll" "My Drug Buddy" "Alison's Starting To Happen" and the McCartney like "Hannah & Gabi" lovely album rightfully on this list. A 4 from me.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this album. It seems to have predicted the rise of early 2000s alternative rock and I even heard the seeds of pop punk in there as well.
Pretty good! Had only ever heard Mrs Robinson but was pleasantly surprised with the rest of the album
This is a good album but I don't think it's as important or innovative as people thought at the time.
Oh, so that is where that song comes from!
Good 90s vibes
8'5
Really tuneful jangly indie that leans almost into power pop territory. None of the songs outstay their welcome, so each is like a technicolour splash in the ol' auditory canal. Nothing stood out, which is perhaps a strength - ie, everything here is of a consistent high quality
I don't really need to re-listen to this because I'm never not listening to it in my head. "Rudderless," "Allison's Starting to Happen," "Ceiling Fan in my Spoon," "Frank Mills," the Simon & G-Funk cover... it's everything that I want from this type of music, in that it's perfectly imperfect and constructed with the utmost simplicity needed to lodge itself in my brain. Evan Dando is probably an awful human being, but fortunately I don't have to date him. Also, “Nursery Cryme ” by Genesis. That’s the one to listen to instead of the one that was on this list.
grunge top d+ as demo version são as melhores
Начало альбома более энергичное и интересное, под конец приходили мысли о выключении. Альбом хороший, но я заскучал
Good band, good album, enjoyed listening to it
It's a shame about Evan Dando.. pretty boy Evan was the rage and the scorn of 90's music. Unfortunately, I was a consumer of the later feelings and didn't really appreciate him until after the Lemmonheads heyday. My girlfriend "Beefdog" had this CD and I remember listening to it a lot when we first moved in together. It grew on me and so did the Lemonheads. I know Paul Simon HATED the Mrs. Robinson cover but I think it's the best and most fun track on this album. Great album. It is quintessential early 90's granola rock when Evan Dando was a smoldering Adonis and the ire of Seattle grunge.
this is an all-timer.
This one was good. I've never heard The Lemonheads before but they seemed to lay the groundwork for a sound that was copied over and over again in the 90s
Pretty nice.
Based on the name and the Mrs Robinson cover I always assumed the lemonheads were a punk band that toned it down for the cover. Looks like they rocked it up for the cover. Been really enjoying this album. Stand out tracks - Bit part Mrs Robinson Allison's starting to happen It's a shame about Ray
When the most memorable song on an album is a last song cover, you might think it's an awful album. But this one is fantastic. For some reason, I love the song Frank Mills and the change of tempo/tone throughout the song.
Very solid and enjoyable. Not a lot of absolute bangers, but the album is solid from start to finish and has a great alternative vibe.
Solid proto punk turns pop. "Bit Part"
Solid
Enjoyed it quite a bit. Pop rock, nice.
Jeez that artwork alone is enough to transport me back to 1991. Rare for a band to launch with a cover and then be able to back it up with their own material but Lemonheads did it. My favourite kind of indie pop-production standards don't have to be abandoned just because it's indie pop. A genuine treat to listen to the whole album.
That's Mrs. Robinson
8/10
Pretty good! Easy listen.
I really liked this one. If Nirvana was a cup of black coffee. You know, the kind where there's inevitably some grounds at the bottom. If Nirvana's that, this cup of tea. It's by no means a happy album but it's got a calm melancholy you can take refuge in.
Не дослушал, не оч зашло
Seemed pretty homophobic?
A proper power pop album chock full of good tunes. Evan Dando knows his songcraft. A bit druggy, a bit slack but a joy, nonetheless.
I had a lot of fun with this one! Pretty solid! Glad I listened to it. A lot of good tracks. The "Mrs. Robinson" cover was VERY unexpected, but as a big Simon and Garfunkel fan, I greatly appreciated it. Overall, a very good album.
A fun throwback to my immediate post-college years, this album is nothing complicated but filled with immediately catchy pop-rock songs in the vein of early-ish Goo Goo Dolls. The album gets going right off the bat with "Rockin Stroll" and those first four songs in particular are great. My personal favourite is "Rudderless" in that it stays relatively contained until that very end double time chorus gives a great release. If there's a negative, Evan Dando's voice gets a little tiresome for me (would have liked Juliana Hatfield to sing a few tunes - would have made this album even better, mixing it up a bit) but the good thing is that it's a short album :) that closes with a banging cover of "Mrs. Robinson." Again - nothing specialized but highly recommended. 7/10 4 stars (ranked based on the original release. I'm not a fan of the "extended" album / demos - so if you're in the same boat stop playing after "Mrs. Robinson" (Apple Music))
Cool
Jaa, super!
Evan Dando in topvorm! Stuk voor stuk catchy liedjes.
God I love Juliana Hatfield.
Classic 90's "pop-rock". Obviously Mrs Robinson the most well known / loved track here (and for good reason - a great cover) but the whole album is full of gems.
bra grejer
not bad, some cute little songs there. very nice cover to boot. I liked it, mrs. Robinson is WEIRDLY out of place though.
It's pretty good. I don't know, it's not my favorite. But I enjoyed the time we spent together.
Great album, had never heard of this band before so was a good listen
That 90s sound, surprised I never heard it before
A pretty enjoyable album and it grew on me the more I listened, despite the fact that only a few tracks really stood out for being distinctive. Of those that did, Bit Part was a really sad song with clever lyrics and Confetti was really catchy. A 3.5 stars but I’m generous and will round up.
Mrs Robinson, The Turnpike Down, Confetti, Hannah & Gabi, Kitchen
Cant believe I never really listens to this band before, this rules
Very cool album! I liked every song! Going to listen to these boyz more for sure.
very enjoyable simple rock :)
A fun and jaunty album. Very simple and enjoyable. Favorite song: The Turnpike Down, Hannah and Gabi
Really good
super cool
I really like this style of American punk
Decent ‘shoe-gazing indie’ as Karla calls it, but nothing to get too excited about apart from the Mrs Robinson cover which is great
4
While I know this isn't an amazing album, it's like a big warm blanket for me. I listened to it A LOT in the 90s and listening to it for this put me instantly at ease. It speaks to a specific time in my life. My first instinct was to give a 5 because of how it made me feel, but after thinking about it more it needs to be a 4.
fun album. pop grunge with notes of pop punk
Melancholic.
Really catchy, a bit of an edge. Gives me warm, 90s movie vibes
Some good songs in there
Great album by a good band
Good solid Indie/rock/pop album
Honestly, a lot better than expected. I liked most of the songs.
very very good alt rock album, it is nothing special but the songs are catchy well written and does not bog down
Decently executed 90s alt rock.
Not bad, not great. ★★★
J’écoute la version expended, la seule que je trouv. Du coup il y aura des répétitions Bit part : bien ! L’album n’est pas si répétitif, il est au global très agréable à écouter, même si peu de sons ressortent du lot 7/10
Not bad, but sounds like every other 90s band.
Mrs. Robinson cover was really good. It's A Shame About Ray and My Drug Buddy were my other standouts. Not a revisit for me but I really enjoyed it one time through.
Short and sassy, it’s a keeper and classic to the era.
Def an early 90's burnout album. None of the tracks are bad and with a short run, not a waste of time. "Rudderless" and "Hannah & Gabi" stood out for me on the record. It's a shame that Mrs. Robinson is the band's legacy track. Good cover but they got much better tracks and I'm glad it only made the re-release. Pretty standard strung out on heroin record. Not sure why this one makes the list but I'm also not holding a gru(n)dge...2.6 stars.
5/10… power pop / 90s indie / *1992
Mid
3/5
It’s pretty good. It doesn’t blow me away. Good energy and good tunes, not a lot of standout moments.
This was alright it did have a couple of songs I remembered on this album
Not a bad album but didn't feel it was anything special.
This isn’t a bad alternative album, but it’s certainly not a standout either. I personally like the Mrs. Robinson cover, but that’s because it was one of the first songs of theirs I heard, and I liked the originally well enough. Overall I could take or leave this album. I think there are other bands that were further outside of the mainstream who deserve the recognition more.
Like a mellow Green Day. Doesn't have pretensions to be more than it is. He has a lovely voice.
It’s a Shame About Ray makes its case quickly and honestly — eleven songs in under thirty minutes, no sprawl, no self-indulgence, just Evan Dando’s loose charm and genuine melodic instincts delivered at a pace that never overstays its welcome. The conciseness is a real virtue and probably the thing that keeps this in solid three territory rather than slipping into charitable three. The songwriting quality is real underneath the slightly ragged indie rock surface. The title track is immediately catchy in a way that feels effortless rather than calculated, and “My Drug Buddy” shows a quieter, more intimate side that gives the record more emotional range than the pop-punk energy alone would suggest. Juliana Hatfield’s harmonies add texture throughout without demanding attention. Dando’s voice — loose, slightly sun-bleached, more charm than precision — fits the material perfectly without generating the kind of presence that makes you reach for a record by choice. That’s ultimately the honest limitation. Pretty good, genuinely catchy, and easy to like without being something that earns regular rotation. A solid three that delivers exactly what it promises and nothing more — which at under thirty minutes feels like exactly the right ambition.
Conocia 2 temas nomas, bastante bueno
Bah pourquoi pas
Extra star for Mrs. Robinson. I know it wasn't on the original release, but I always feel bad giving an album just two stars.
Pretty good!
I prefer this version of Mrs. Robinson, sorry Simon&Garfunkle!
The Lemonheads may seem like a random addition to the 1001 albums to hear before you die list, but I was quite pleasantly surprised by the shear quality of It's a Shame About Ray as it really blew me away at times with its' fun and enjoyable Power Pop sound. The singing felt Ween-esc and the instrumentation wasn't anything crazy but just an enjoyable time from front to back. This album may only be 29 minutes in total runtime, but it never feels rushed or underbaked. I would argue this project feels quite perfect in its' runtime as a nice short treat for the ears. I don't think this is an incredible piece of music, but for Power Pop in the 90s I think that this is a very enjoyable album worth diving into if given a proper chance to. Sometimes all you need to do is to be solid to be memorable.
2.5
Alright
Du rock plutôt médiocre.
My Drug Buddy could be the most underrated song of all time
It’s a cute album. Better than expected. Not annoying. Indie Pop. It’s fine. Not amazing. Met Dando and Hatfield once. They were sweet kids.
청춘 하이틴 영화에 나올 것 같다 베스트: 트랙 3
I think if this was the only cd in my car growing up I would love this but it really is forgettable 90s alt rock. The fact that the largest song on here is a rock cover of Mrs Robinson should tell you all you need to know.
A good album, I liked Confetti and It's a Shame About Ray the most.
The titular song is probably their strongest, though their cover of Mrs Robinson is pretty good, but the best thing to come from the Lemonheads was Juliana Hatfield.
Perhaps it’s important, but I’d never heard of them before and they sounded like I’d heard them a dozen times.
It was ok, nothing that really stuck with me. 2.5/5
Much as this record brings warm feelings, it's not even the best Lemonheads record. A solid, workable indie rocker, but far from remarkable.
It’s a shame that Evan Dondo seems to be an asshole, because he writes a pretty catchy 90s alt rock / power pop type tun. A fairly clean sound for the style. Decent listen but nothing that really reaches the next level for me.
Nice little alt rock, pop punk band. Songs were catchy, although perhaps not too memorable. I'll need to give it a re-listen.
It's not bad, but it's fairly repetitive. No picks and a very solid 3/5.
(63/100)
# Album Name: It's A Shame About Ray # Artist: Lemonheads # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Just alright. Shouldnt be on the list. Mrs robinson a banger. # Top Tunes: Mrs R # Would I listen to it again? Dont think so
Its 90s alt rock..... you know exactly what this album sounds like
I almost really liked it but mostly meh.
En fin samling melodiska sånger. Det halvakustiska soundet ger en lätthet jämfört med mycket annan amerikansk indierock från den här tiden. Lemonheads sticker inte ut mest, men vinner i längden.
Oh right, it's the band whose big hit was a cover. That's a tough beat, they can commiserate with Alien Ant Farm and Save Ferris. Except I'd rather listen to those other two because THIS album is middle-of-the-road 90s "alternative," of the variety that made that genre name meaningless. Anyway, another 3 that feels like a 2, but that cover of Mrs. Robinson is a bop. 2.5 grudgingly rounded up.
My parents really like this album it's chill I think
I caught fish after listening to this
Nice stuff 3
Pretty good
Better than couldplay
The front part sounds pretty like anime op style, the back part sounds like old American style 3/5
Classic 90s alt rock but not really my jam
3 sterren.
Pleasant Nostalgia hit for a band I didn't really know
Only got 3 stars because they snuck on the Mrs Robinson cover.
Quite a fun listen. Favourite tracks: Ceiling Fan in my Spoon & Mrs. Robinson, which I think may have been a hit at the time of release and actually owes more to Paul Simon than them, but good fun anyway. 3
Not my favorite, but overall it wasn’t too bad. There were just a few songs I really didn’t like.
Solid alt-pop. I've always like the Lemonheads' acoustic first approach. IMO Come On Feel The Lemonheads is a more solid effort. Even better, check out the Juliana Hatfield Three's Become What You Are, which is much better than these two albums, again IMO! Liked Songs Added: It's A Shame About Ray Bit Part Mrs. Robinson
Background rock
Pretty standard 90s indie, not a bad listen! Might pick it up again after a few months. All in all, just ok.
Such a nostalgia trip for me with a couple of moments that still transport me back to the nineties. Maybe hasn’t aged as well as some other albums from that era but still a good listen.
Good roadtrip music but I wouldnt do it for everyday listening.
Evan Dando’s voice always worked better in slower more understated stuff for me. So when you’ve got this upbeat power pop he just kind of overwhelms it with his voice. It sort of belongs to the same sound a lot of the chiller bands had. Spin Doctors. Del Amitri. Gin Blossoms. It’s definitely better than those artists, these guys can write decent hooks
Surprised this made the list as it's not very memorable, but still a good listen. The Turnpike Down was my favorite.
rated my first 1001 album song-by-song, but there's too many in this one, so i think i just won't anymore. honestly didn't have the heart to say it about the previous album, but it's generic. this is no different. very similar to a lot of bands around the 90's, doesn't stand out that much. still a pleasant listen, though.
An in offensive 90’s alt album.
I never really understood the popularity of this band. Their songs were catchy enough but kinda mediocre. 3 stars. Fave track - it’s a shame..,
Plods along nicely, nothing special to write home about.
It’s a shame about this list that it keeps generating marginal 90s albums.
Es la versión extendida entonces se me hizo bastante largo. En su estilo creo que está bastante bueno.
Very very meh. This just blends into my mental archive of okay rock music of which there are hundreds on this list. 3/5
Great example of 90s alt-rock. Not sure if it is their best version, historically important, or deserves a place on the list. Enjoyed it even though it is not my preferred style. 0 songs added to playlist.
I really liked this type of alt pop music. There were a few bands like this that I liked at the time and this stripped down music, kinda folky is really great
There's nothing truly wrong with Lemonheads . . . but neither is there anything all that terrific. It's telling, I think, that their breakout song is a halfway decent cover of "Mrs. Robinson," since that song is a clearly written classic with great lines and a super hook. None of Evan Dando's composition efforts come close to this. Admittedly, comparing your own personal songwriting prowess to Paul Simon's is a little like comparing your efforts as an inventor to Thomas Edison's (Yes, I'm talking to you, Homer Simpson!), but that lack of composing greatness seems to me a key reason why Lemonheads only ever became "a kinda fun band from the 90s," rather than a truly great group for the ages.
Sounds like a sweltering hot summers day, there are some classics in here, but also a lot of mediocrity.
Mrs Robinson is the famous song
Decent listen
The version I listened to included some demo versions. I found I liked these versions much more, and I wonder how the band felt about the change in sound. Was this album how they wanted things to sound? Was this how the record company thought they should sound? Is it both? Either way, I found the album release version very same-y. It's 90's alt rock at it's most genre-confirming.
