Reviews (page 5 of 8)
I remember this. Mrs. Robinson was the hit song. The album's alright. Not a bad song on it, but nothing great either. There were lots of bands like this at the time. I think in future editions of the book, this is one of the albums that can be replaced. Not because it's bad, but because there's similar better albums on the list. Favorite song: Bit part.
It's fine, sadly it's where they lost me, I hate to say it but I prefer their earlier work
~2.5. Standout: Bit Part. Not much else stood out to me.
The whole album is so polished it became so basic and absolutely bleak. On Spotify there are demo versions included and imho they sound much more authentic and interesting. Enjoyed the 'Bit Part' and really appreciated the 'Mrs. Robinson' cover, it's really good.
Really liked this upbeat album.
Basic alternative rock. Evan Dando is a great songwriter but there was nothing fantastic about this album
Good in the way that a lot of 90s rock is good, but would not stand out among some of the heavier hitting peers. I’m not putting on Lemonheads when there’s Built to Spill to be put on, for example.
Really great album. Not positive I would go back to it much but super enjoyable. Lovely cover of Mrs. Robinson 3.5
It's a shame I can't give it 3.5 stars- some pretty well crafted tunes
Chill, chill, chill, chill. I’m hearing Modest Mouse. Is this “punk pop”? Strong 3.
It’s so 90s it reminds me of the Pete & Pete theme song and Counting Crows. I remember hearing the Mrs. Robinson cover on the radio too. Despite the nostalgia, it’s still just not my vibe.
Power pop isn't really my thing. This wasn't bad though
Good stuff
As a gen Xr, you can’t think of lemonheads without thinking of their cover of Ms Robinson. Back when mtv was a thing, this song was on heavy rotation during the alternative time slot. It goes without saying that it's a banger. I never gave the rest of the album a listen, aside from the track “my drug buddy” which is great. I also recognized the main guitar parts from the title track which is also OK, as is the rest of the album now that I think about it. Not really my jam.
Reminiscent of a lot of 90s alt rock. Not horrible but I'd rather listen to Toad the Wet Spocket, Better than Ezra, or REM. The music from those bands connected more with me.
Feels like a sound track to an early 20s coming of age movie
I didn't realize how much I would dig this album. Although released in the early 90's, it sounds like it could have been released in the late 80's.
Never heard of that band until now. Good vocal and a nice variety of tunes.
Listened to the expanded version and I’m glad I did - it gave me a different appreciation for the tracks on this record. The intended versions of the songs were good, but gave me a “oh I hired this band for your birthday,” vibe. However, the acoustic versions showed me the intended effect each song was trying to convey - I almost wish there was a little jazzy/ rock style drumming keeping time and creating layering. I liked both versions of My Drug Buddy, but found the full version of Ruder less annoying, but not the acoustic. Cool band that you just know inspired so many other groups to create music.
I knew the name, but kind of surprised I never listened to them. It is similar to the vibe of music I listened to around this era. Nice slide guitar. The sound quality is really good and I probably would have enjoyed this more between the ages of 14 to 17. Overall there were no big moments and the rhythm gets pretty repetitive. The album length was a nice break. Does the cover song count? Seems to be a bonus track on a re release. I'm not counting it.
Niet mijn stijl maar wel gewoon goed 3.1
this sounded like the in-between of dino jr and emo which i both enjoy but it never really grabbed me like those two do
Despite the fact that I owned a copy of this cassette at one point, I need to know on what planet this was every something that needed to be listened to before one dies? One of the other reviews is like "this is good, but I can think of a bunch of other albums from that era that sound the same." I'm with that person - how is this unique at all other than the Mrs. Robinson cover? And honestly, by definition of it being a cover, that's also not unique.
The name of the band The Lemonheads sound familiar to me. But after listening to the album, I didn't notice much that was familiar. I didn't find the music particularly impressive. I liked It's a Shame About Ray. I soon found the cover version of Mrs. Robinson better than the original. The rest of the album strummed pleasantly but unimpressively in the background. 3/5
Vinalegt sixties skotið gítarpopp. 3,5
My Grandad’s name is Ray
Meh. Its just another band. Sound is generic to the era. Nothing really special just influenced by the earlier better groups of the same style. Its not bad, actually liked it but not original or diferent at all from the bands before them
Solid pop-punk record, simple and easily accessible
Seems pleasant enough I suppose. Nothing memorable for me though. Based on the the internet I expected a hard rock band.
I haven't listened to much of this band before. They have good energy. Very "90s sitcom intro" vibe. I never noticed there's a "coo coo ca choo" in 'Mrs Robinson' before. Highlight: 'Confetti'
fun-loving sorta remmy album, enjoyable though it got a little blurry by the end
This is a decent album if you’re looking for something lighthearted that captures the nostalgic essence of early ’90s alternative rock. It’s fun to hear some jangly guitars really take the spotlight. The standout track is, of course, their big hit—their cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Mrs. Robinson.” I have to admit, their version has actually stood the test of time surprisingly well.
Is that you, Foos? I don’t have immediate access to a dorm so I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to totally understand this record, but I do remember being a teenager and suspect I’d have hated this if I was one in the 90s. Thankfully, I’m now in my mid 30s so don’t mind the outwardly anodyne just as long as it isn’t insultingly so. Which this isn’t. 3.5 because I like “Rudderless” and hear points of influence for lots of other bands I like.
I listened to this at 1am on a 100 mile drive home....I remember nothing about this
A pretty solid 90's sound. Mrs. Robinson was fun. Nothing really stands out but I enjoyed this.
Quite nice soft rock of the early 90s 7/10
Pretty alright 90s alt rock
Good example of jingly/jangly early nineties pop. Very samey and nothing stands out of any note. The only exception is Mrs Robinson, which stands out like a sore thumb mainly because of the genius of Paul Simon. A beige 3 stars for me.
Punk pop rock but very watered down. Not that I like punk, but this sounds too tame
Good
I had heard the cover of Mrs. Robinson before, but none of the rest. It's fine, nothing crazy, not much that was memorable. Just generic, acoustic guitar-based 90s rock.
Almost pop punk vibes at first but the title track and Rudderless are melodic 90s jangle rockers. The rest of the album is mostly in that vein. I kinda dig it but nothing much is really standing out either. Hannah & Gabi was a favorite. The bonus track is an uptempo cover of Mrs Robinson that was probably the most fun song on the album.
everything feels the same. each song is equally good and has the exact same vibe to it. i think it would take me so many listens to be able to distinguish between them
i really like this its very comfy in a way, but i kinda forgot about it immediately after i stopped listening to it so… thats why its only a 3
Didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. Solid 3.
Just forgettable. Also was surprised to learn they did NOT write the theme song for FRIENDS
A good listen.
Every song sounds exactly the same. The template works, but it's just annoying to hear the same song for 35 minutes. If anything saves this album, it's the 90s nostalgia.
good 90's
01) Rockin Stroll - 6,5 02) Confetti - 6,5 03) It's a Shame About Ray - 7,5 04) Rudderless - 6,0 05) My Drug Buddy - 6,0 06) The Turnpike Down - 5,5 07) Bit Part - 5,5 08) Alison's Starting to Happen - 6,5 09) Hannah & Gabi - 6,0 10) Kitchen - 6,0 11) Ceiling Fan in My Spoon - 6,5 12) Frank Mills - 5,5 13) Mrs. Robinson - 8,0 TOTAL: 6,31 (63/100) Current ranking: 274/353
Rockin' Stroll is a fun kickoff track. On first inspection it seems pretty straightforward, but the drum work is constantly shifting keeping the listener on their toes. The writing on Confetti is damned catchy. I feel like Zack Berman took direct inspiration from this vocalist -- there's a sunken nature to the delivery + echo effect that is uncannily similar to everything of his that I ever heard. The title track shines. Familiar song structure, but it is done well and I actually liked the vocal delivery a lot here -- has a post-punk vibe to it that persists across the album. Found myself vibing along to My Drug Buddy. Nothing earth shattering, but everything about it is nice -- slow thrumbing bass, punchy drums, crisp acoustic, and some backing organ support with nice vocal harmonization. This falls in a similar category to Tuesdays Gone for me -- a blissful, but calm ballad that feels bittersweet in some sense. This was fine, but far from earth shattering. Perfect 3 / 5 candidate.
Good Mrs. Robinson cover. Rest of it was okay. 3 stars
Allison did happen to me.
There's nothing earth shattering about this although I do like the production. Every song sounds good but they all kinda sound the same. Allison's growing a mohawk! Mrs. Robinson is the best song on here and it's not even technically on here.
Enjoyable album, lots of elements of music I enjoy. Instrumentals maybe like the Smiths. 3* Highlights from the deluxe version: the mrs robinson cover (apparently this is making me a S&G shill), knowing me knowing you (I'm also an ABBA shill and these guys make nice covers)
I feel that I should be more critical on this, but I happened to like it a good bit. Very simple vocals, guitar, and rhythm that did enough to get me tapping my foot. Not every record has to be groundbreaking when they can just simply have a good time.
I feel like I've heard this album a lot. Sounds great, but very similar to others in the genre.
Rockin Stroll - 6.4 Confetti - 6.8 It's A Shame About Ray - 6.5 Rudderless - 7.2 My Drug Buddy - 7.5 The Turnpike Down - 6.8 Bit Part - 6.5 Alison's Starting To Happen - 6.9 Hannah & Gabi - 7.1 Kitchen - 6.9 Ceiling Fan In My Spoon - 7.0 Frank Mills - 7.1 Mrs. Robinson - 7.0 Shakey Ground - 6.8
The original version of this album got quite short and holds nothing remarkable for me although I like this kind of 90´s rock. The later added "Mrs. Robinson"- cover version secures them the three stars.
Kind of a lot of acoustic, where the album is cohesive but also leaves me wanting something to change at some point. I did actually like the extended songs more than the base album.
Short and sweet - some rather catchy tunes - snotty but in the arts college kind of way. These guys influenced half the British punk bands of the late 90s from my half bakes recollection - I could hear a lot of Ash, Sleeper and a hint of the Charlatans. However while it’s short it gets quite samey and besides the couple of catchy songs like the title track, Alison and a couple others i already forgot, it’s not the most memorable albums still fun while listening to it.
So while listening to this, I kept thinking king it sounded like a less inspired version of The Replacements. Lo and behold, when it finished, Spotify put on a Replacements song, and it was much better. I enjoyed it, but it was kinda nothing. It felt like it could have been the band that the characters best friend plays in in a 90s teen movie.
It was all kind of a blur. I liked it generally but not too much jumped out at me and re-engaged my attention.
I've never heard of The Lemonheads. They're from Boston, which is pretty cool of them. According to their Spotify bio they broke out around the Nirvana times, and were associated with Oasis and other iconic Gen X bands of the 90s. If the Spotify description is to be believed, they mostly got famous from how handsome the lead singer was. That makes sense as the music all seems a little toothless and same-y. It's a good length and inoffensively catchy the entire time, but it doesn't really do anything great. It certainly is music, and it isn't bad. My favorite song was "Ceiling Fan in My Spoon". That's a cool name for a song and immediately evokes a scene/moment in my mind. It's kind of funny that they covered Mrs. Robinson. It wasn't better than the original. 5/10
rockin stroll- 4 or 5 confetti-5 its a shame about ray-6 rudderless- 4 my drug buddy-7 the turnpike down- dont remember bit part- dont rmeeber alisons starting to happen- 6 hannah and gabi- 4 kitchen- 4 ceiling fan in my room- 4 frank mills- 5 how can you tell the songs apart. favorite track- my drug buddy. shocker
Nothing very special
Very good. 3.5
i second what the guy said about the hackey sack
Love the Mrs Robinson cover and the title track is very solid. Other than that I feel that it is just “ok”
Straight down the middle upbeat background music.
I've got a soft spot for Drug Buddy and It's a Shame about Ray, but overall is meh and feels super dated.
It's an OK album but I'm not sure it belongs on this list. I really like the title track. I like the guitar in Rudderless and kind of like Frank Mills. The rest of the album is meh. It was interesting to learn that Juliana Hatfield was part of the band.
I'd give this a 3. I love the jangly guitars on most of the songs. It represents that slacker era in the early 90s that contradicted the harder darker grunge sound also emerging at the time. There are two alt rock classics in the title track and the Mrs Robinson remake. The rest of the album has a few highlights but it mostly forgettable.
Very meh.
The music isn’t super inspired, but I really loved some of the lyrics in this album, a lot of really earnest songs and feelings. Just want to be a bit part in someone’s life… drug buddy, it’s fun stuff. I especially loved Frank Mills because I just love the idea of the hope to run into a long-unseen acquaintance that made such an impression of you. I think we all have a lot of Frank Mills in our life. The extra b-side song Shakes Ground is also a really nice nuanced song about the love between friends vs SOs. So yeah, really enjoyable lyrics here even if the music is a bit meh and sounds the same.
They will always be known for a cover song, "Mrs. Robinson" and the band that was once pushed by record company over Nirvana. It was fine early 90s jams, but I don't need to celebrate their entire catologue.
A really clean sound dominates this grungy / alt rock trio. Cover of Mrs. Robinson is not to be skipped
M’a fait penser à Elvis Costello dans ses bons moments; dans l’ensemble, assez ordinaire
Итс окэй. Ничего впечатляющего, но мне нравится такое. Лучшая песня - It’s a Shame About Ray.
Fairly pleasant I guess 3.5
didnt Listen to the whole Album but its a shame about Ray and mrs Robinson arr classics
I expected to like it more than I did because I know Mrs. Robinson, but it was rather bland. I think I’ll listen to it again on a train for my final verdict, as I can imagine it would slap a bit more. I need to remember to make Kokos-Curry sauce.
Some of the tracks are really tight and impressively short, and some are very middling 90s indie sludge. Not sure it really needed the expanded edition treatment...
3.5
Unchallenging "alternative" rock. It's pop-rock at the height of the indie wave of the 90s. Not really grunge, this was a solid, typical example of pop music of the time. Easy to listen to, and Julianna Hatfield is generally a credit to anything she appears on. There's some power in the percussion, the harmonies are dreamy, it's really solid work. A few standout tracks, but aside from capturing the zeitgeist musically, I'm not sure I would call this a "must-hear" album. Around this same time, largely because of the popularity of this album and their Mrs. Robinson cover, they were tapped to contribute to the Schoolhouse Rocks compilation album. They did a gorgeous cover of "My Hero, Zero", too. Check it out if you're inclined.
Not a bad tune anywhere in the album. But also no tunes that moved me. The lead singer did not use much range or employ variety. Kind of all trash together for me. Only two listens though. Maybe something will grab me after a couple more...
I am really not sure if this album needs to be on the 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die or not, except perhaps for the involvement of Juliana Hatfield. It’s fine, standard indie rock. It bring me back to some carefree days of the early 90s and maybe it represents that moment in time pretty well. ‘Rudderless’ sounds like something that I could have heard on the radio during that era without knowing who it was. Is it the best example of the era though? I really can’t decide. It’s a good album, with a few strong songs. The only song that I already knew was their cover of ‘Mrs Robinson’, which is certainly good enough, but not as good as the original. Ok, so I don’t know if it’s really significant enough but I definitely don’t hate it.
Is it pop punk? Is it grunge? Is it alternative? It's kinda all of that, but each watered down.
This was kinda a fine listen, light and jangly but with dark lyrics. I kept waiting for something familiar but nothing ever jumped out until their cover of Mrs. Robinson.
I’m a Lemonheads fans but even this makes me question why this album is one I must listen to. This album does not create new fans or many new fans, someone has to bite on it. There is no mistaking what time frame this album came out in. It’s mellow but not too mellow. There’s decent lyrics throughout the album. Vocally Evan Dando isn’t going to wow you or blow you away but he delivers on each song. The music is tight and the production is crisp. There just isn’t a “wow” factor. Mrs. Robinson didn’t cut it when I heard the original and this one doesn’t do it for me either. Then again, this album came out in the age when one song made you a headliner at the biggest music festivals…. Choice cut: My Drug Buddy
some good songs, most not memorable but not offensive either. and drug buddy has been a very meaningful song for me for a long time. i enjoyed this listen but it was not actually particularly good.
The his album was a solid grunge album before grunge was cool. The irony is I don’t remember hearing this album, which predated Nevermind and Ten, until the late ‘90s. The Simon & Garfunkel cover of Mrs. Robinson is still a classic and my favorite track, but I have to give a shout out to Ceiling Fan is My Spoon and It’s A Shame as standout tracks.
First song made me think I wish I had got more into the Lemonheads when this came out in the 90s. Why was I sleeping on this? Also, the song "It's a Shame About Ray" stole a riff from Rush but it still sounds cool here too! Wish I'd spent more time with this one way back when. I'll have to spin this one a few more times.
Run of the mill 90s rock
Meh
Interesting. I kind of liked some of these songs
Another Columbia House acquisition, I got this album in the mid-90s based on the song “It’s a Shame About Ray.” It’s a pleasant listen but didn’t stick with me then too much and likely won’t now. An easy listen from the 90s that I’m not convinced needs to be listened to before death but I don’t hate it.
Groupe inconnu. => 3/5
Soild 90’s alt rock album that doesn’t outstay its welcome, pretty inoffensive which I think makes it easier to recommend to a wider audience hence should be listened to before you die. But not interesting enough for my personal taste.
I dig it. Liked the cover of Mrs Robinson
I think I like the candy more than the band. Pretty chill vibes though. Loved the cover of the Beatles song, that was fun.
Just okay
I’m vaguely aware of this band from the 90s. It’s easy to see why they never broke through in any significant way. Mediocre songs from start to finish; although I did enjoy the little flares of alt-country.
dá 10 mango pra elesh
That's so 90's. 3.
Pretty dece alt rock, the Simon & Garfunkel cover is fun but not even one of the best songs on here. It’s a breezy spin, I get the appeal. C+
Typical 80’s punk / rock
Poppy, 90’s British rock
One of the albums of all time
Pretty good
The sound of many bands in the 90’s that strayed from or rebelled against synthesized sounds of the 80’s. Difficult to tell this group from the rest. Songs don’t really move past the hook.
Very 90s. Lead vocalist reminded me of Squeeze's and the overall sound was like a bunch of other bands of the era, such as The Rembrandts. It's fine, but nothing stand out.
Is post punk pop a thing? The songs all sound the same
It was fine.
Some reasonably good 90s rock.
Rock alternativo. Un megahit (encima cover). Ni fu ni fa.
I don't remember this album being so long. Juliana Hatfield is one of my favourites. Her bass playing in this is pretty rad. Evan's voice gets a bit samey after a bit though.
Ah, this was a lovely spot of poppy rocky sunshine, they weren't too bad were they?
I had an uncle called Ray. Not even sure he was my uncle. He was really old. Maybe my grandads brother? Not sure. Anyway. We called him Uncle Ray. When he died I remember saying to my mum ‘it’s a shame about Ray’. It was a shame. He was a bit of a legend. Anyway, you’ll probably find this more interesting than this album. It’s not offensive in any way. Just a bit boring and samey. 2.5
Ah, the early 90s. It was such an innocent time for pop culture. This album hit right when MTV got serious about college radio bands. Evan Dando’s hair was perfectly TV ready. That’s really all that set this band apart from the 10000 other bands that sounded exactly like this. The Mrs. Robinson cover was an excellent gateway to the mainstream. Lots of indie bands were doing nostalgic covers at the time. It’s a cute album. Better than expected. Not annoying. Indie Pop. It’s fine. Not amazing. Met Dando and Hatfield once. They were sweet kids.
It's A Shame About Ray? More like It's a Shame this album couldn't be more interesting. All jokes aside, its an okay album, just rather generic and safe. There were not many moments that i could go out and say "Yeah, this is something i can remember" and none of those moments really were the songs themselves, just specific moments in them like cool riffs at the beginning of Alison's Starting To Happen, or amusing vocals like at the beginning of Bit Part. I will admit, Frank Mills is a pretty interesting song with some unique lyrics, too bad its so short though. This album is fine, just nothing I would go out of my way to really listen to again. Best Song: Frank Mills Worst Song: Rockin' Stroll
Nice enough. Not amazed. But good.
It's OK but shouldn't get 5 stars. This is pleasant pop released while grunge turned everything up to 11.
De va chilled out nog
которые строки интересные но не музыка, не для меня (
I liked it! It was very listenable alt rock -- not super memorable but a good experience!
The fact that the best track on this album was “Mrs. Robinson” says everything about how I felt about it. And it wasn’t even on the original release. It’s a good, tight, energetic band but their writing isn’t the best here. Not much more to add.
Nothing to write home about here. The songs kind of blend into each other. It all feels safe and familiar, nothing dangerous, nothing surprising. It evokes the kind of music you might have played on a long road trip, one of these where the landscape barely changes. You might have gotten that tape used at a small record store in one of the small towns you stopped in on your way to whatever coast you were heading to at the time, while your friends were stopping for chips and peanuts. You may have played it repeatedly over the many hours you spent in the back of your friend's tiny car, wondering if you would make it over the top that hill you were pushing through. Once the trip was over, you probably never listened to it again. But you have fond memories of these days. You sometimes think about these folks but you doubt you will ever see them again.
This was OK. It kind of sounded like Teenage Fanclub to me, but not quite as interesting.
#212. It's kinda the same as every other 90s alternative rock album, but I dig it. 3/5: yarp
- Like the alt rock vibes - I wish it was a little rockier like the first song but the rest was pretty enjoyable anyway - 3.5
- solid but not as amazing as I had anticipated
Ok, I guess
Some decent 90's pop-punk. Held up by Mrs Robinson
I guess this is what early 90s college radio would sound like.
Meh.
3/5 but only because Mrs Robinson
Standard early 90's alt to me. Nothing bad or great. 3.5
I didn't mind this. Definitely of its time but that isn't entirely a bad thing.
So alt-rock it hurts. The Lemonheads epitomize the scruffy indie band playing in a dingy basement lit with old Christmas lights while their girlfriends watch them from the shabby beer stained/cigarette burned couch. That’s not a bad thing. They are more of a vibe to me than a good band. This album is mid level decent. It is not comparable to far better alt rock bands from the same time period.
I think I had this in my collection once upon a time, but definitely not listened to it for ages, so was looking forward to revisiting. It was good, but not brilliant. Probably why it hasn’t lasted in my rotation!
Good
Blast from the 90s past. Lots of tart, fun pop.
Short and to the point. This album almost feels about 10 years ahead of its time but that's probably why it is on the list. Reminded me of foo Fighters but with more punk than grunge. Overall I enjoyed the album and thought it was good. A little bit more probably would bump this up to the 4 or 5 range for me.
Very much of its time. Much better than the one song I knew (the cover of ‘Mrs Robinson) had led me to expect.
Pretty decent album, some of the songs kinda sound the same. I feel like the Lemonheads bridge the gap between the Replacements/80’s sound and the classic 90’s rock sound
Nifty alt-rock. Also, respect for keeping the tracks consistently very short – an art that feels very rare nowadays. Not every track is a hit (indeed, none of them particularly are) but they are all similarly strong. The mixing and overall sound is pretty high-quality, at the expensive of the music sounding extremely typical of 90s alt-rock. The vocalist has a very pleasant and distinctive voice quality, but it could really do with some harmonies. Some tracks approach this, but more self-harmonising (or collaboration with other musicians!) would really boost the strength and memorability of most, if not all, of the album's tracks. As it stands currently, the tracks, while individually exciting, blend into one another – and this isn't only the fault of the singing, but the singing is the most obvious factor that could be improved upon. Key tracks: It's A Shame About Ray, My Drug Buddy, Kitchen, Mrs. Robinson
I could probably get pretty into this music on repeat listens.
Too many similar songs
This album didn’t really grip me, and I was shocked to hear Ms. Robinson was on it when it came on. I listened to the deluxe version and my favorite some was actually their cover of Knowing Me, Knowing You by ABBA, I love the sort of creepy rock version of the Greta song. But, the original album wasn’t really my vibe.
This album is fine. There are some songs that are every very good, but, as a whole, it doesn't rise above "average" to me, and even though I know Evan Dando is a great songwriter, I don't think this album is consistent enough at a high enough quality - and I'm personally not aware of some larger impact this album had beyond what many other albums at the time had.
Good for one listen. Each song blended into the next, and after several songs, I realized I wasn’t really listening anymore.
Perfectly fine.
It's okay
Ooh, he's such a nice boy, with his lovely floppy hair. And he does that nice song by that nice Garfunkel and his lovely friend.
Mostly dull rock but some songs were nice. The original version was too short, I'd like a couple more songs. Stand-out: It's A Shame About Ray
Titular track is solid, rest of the album fairly mid
Pretty good I remember it coming out
I liked it but it's always a little awkward when the best song on the album is a cover.
Never heard the whole thing. Great early 90's jangle pop. Standout tracks are title track, and the "Shakey Ground".
Meh
Alright album, Mrs. Robinson is definitely the peak, not something I would come back to but fine music that I'm sure some people would enjoy. 2.5/5
Enjoyed this one.
Sonorités très cools, de bons riffs, un côté grunge/punk pas trop agressif non plus. 3,5/5
3.5 solid album, but not mind blowing. Reminds me of a poppy Dinosaur Jr
I’ve never really understood all the hype about this - it sounds like so many other bands from the time and all the songs are a bit samey, so I really don’t know why this is one of the albums that stuck and lasted the test of time. That being said, it is pretty fun while it’s on
I liked this.
I liked this but nothing wasn’t particularly notable
Meh.
Decent songs. Definitely a product of its time
solid dose of alternative rock with most of the songs under three minutes. good album. highlights: “rockin stroll”, “it’s a shame about ray”, “alison’s starting to happen”, “mrs. robinson”
Never heard of them before. Not bad. I like the candy.
Still in that "jangle pop" vein that I wasn't a big fan of back in the late 80/early 90s. Three stars because there are a few songs that I liked well enough, "My Drug Buddy" leading the way.
first listen not as interesting as it could be
Not impressed!
I wanted to love this, I really did. Songs are short and similar, and I can think of other bands that have done it better. 3/5, and only because I'd add it as a road trip album.
Didn't know anything about them before listening, so they didn't disappoint, but also didn't blow me away, really middle of the road for me.
it's alright
Ok-ish, easy listening but did not really left a lasting impression since most songs sounded the same. Their version of 'Mr. Robinson' was pretty nice though. 3/5
These were really pleasant tunes, felt like I was listening to a road trip type album that plays in a movie. Nothing super exciting, but a good album overall. I’m actually keeping the title song and Rudderless so that’s a win.
Really enjoyed this one! Some cool alt-rock stuff going on here, great melodies. Some of the songs blend together, but in a good way because the sound works for me. Never heard of this group, but I like their style. A cover of "Mrs. Robinson" is pretty neat too. Favorite tracks: It's a Shame About Ray, Rudderless, Bit Part. Album art: Seems to be a....painting?...of a woman in front of an old car. Interesting vintage, pop-art sort of style. Why is her necklace clipping through her shirt? No idea. But it's a pretty good cover. 3.5/5
This record is again a pretty straightforward picture of early 90s pre-grunge (or maybe grunge tangential) alt rock. There's aspects of classic punk, grunge, pop. It's not exactly groundbreaking. I remember hearing Mrs. Robinson all the time when I was little and I think that's probably the best song on this album. In the end this album fits in with the rest of the bands from this time that were doing the same thing - Spin Doctors, Gin Blossoms, Better Than Ezra, The Breeders, etc. It's sort of a time capsule of when music was transitioning from the punk and glam metal of the 80s to something heavier and more depressing but there existed a couple years with light, dare I say inconsequential, sort of sparkly sounding alt rock before grunge really took hold.
Better than other 90s music of this ilk. Likeable.
Great album! But this is my wheelhouse for sure. The style takes me back to high school and that nostalgia of the 90’s. However, there aren’t many “bangers” on this album. The cover of Paul Simon is amazing and the stand out song for sure.
Liked the overall energy of this album, I don't think I'll find myself reaching out for it specifically but it's pleasant to listen to. Guitar tone reminds me of AIC sometimes. Fav: Confetti
Ms Robinson and some pretty standard punk
Enjoyable but not very interesting
Album #100, we're making progress! This one has a distinctly '90s alt rock sound. It's generally solid, though maybe a bit unexceptional. The song that blew up on this is actually their "Mrs. Robinson" cover which wasn't on the original release. It's great, and the title track is also awesome. There's a few more solid songs too, but a few stretches where things cool down a bit. Not my favorite thing ever, but the sound is good and it's got some strong tracks, no major complaints here. Favorite song: Mrs. Robinson Other: It's A Shame About Ray, Rudderless, My Drug Buddy, Hannah & Gabi, Frank Mills 12/8/23
2.5/5
Reminded me a lot of 90 grunge like blind melon. 1st listen , but used to have the Mrs Robinson cover on a comp album growing up. 3.5
For what it is, it's not bad at all. But like, every song uses the same chords lol
Classic 90s album!

Songs to strum around the campfire. And their best one is a cover.
Breezy, propulsive early 90s alternative. It’s not reinventing the wheel, but the wheel’s still rolling along at a pleasant pace.
I would have loved these songs had I listened to them at the right time in life, as it is this is a very pleasant album to me that I have no attachment to. Maybe future listens will add context.
Disposable power pop
It was okay some hits, but all very similar overall
This album reminds me of my sister. I flower out from under her bedroom door for a good chunk of the 90's. In my head, it's always been 'her' music so I never really listened to it. On reflection I can see the appeal, sunny tracks that speak of its time and place. I'll probably listen to this more now, mostly to remind myself of her, but also because it's a good album
Compilation of 2000’s romcom soundtracks. It was ight
Big Gilmore girls feels
Pretty dece, seems like requirement for 1001 albums is having a super popular song on it
Music
The Lemonheads sound like a lot of other alt rock/power pop groups from the 90's such as the Gin Blossoms or Spin Doctors. Hannah & Gabi sounds like country/alt rock similar to Hootie and the Blowfish. Their version of Mrs. Robinson is pretty good, and became hugely popular after its use in American Pie 2 and Wolf of Wall Street. This music isn't necessarily bad, there was just so much of it at the time, and I find it hard to differentiate one band from another within the genre. This is a perfectly average album. Nothing really jumps off of the record at you, but it isn't something I was rushing to turn off either. Favourite songs: It's a Shame About Ray, Mrs. Robinson, Hannah & Gabi, Rockin' Stroll, Allison's Starting to Happen Least favourite songs: Frank Mills, Rudderless 3/5
Enjoyable, but nothing stood out for me
I have known this album for a long time, and many friends have pushed me to give this album a listen time and time again. I've actually listened to this from the CD of this album I own. And still. It has never done it for me. It never hit a mark. Never left an impression. It's good, and Dando is clearly talented, but even now, after all these years, this album just passes me by.
Nostalgia the main reaction from me. Very 90s Sydney vibes
The songs are pretty similar and just kind of straight-ahead, but there's no denying Evan Dando's voice, which is very pleasant to the ears. The whole album blurs together, unfortunately. Bit Part was probably the high point to me, but it's also only 2 minutes long.
3/5 It's a Shame about Ray is the standout song on the album.
Easy to listen to. Rating:3.4
It’s making me think of ‘My So Called Life’. So many bands sounded like this in the late 80s and early 90s, The Lemonheads don’t really stand out from the rest, but it’s easy on the ears, pleasant enough indie pop.

Kuulostaa aika paljon tällaiselta 80-luvun puolenvälin post rockilta, ollakseen ysäriä. Ihan kivasti toimii taustalla.
It's nice when an album is brief enough that you can give it multiple listens in the day. It's some good old 90s indie rock, most of the songs being pretty quick, think Doolittle or Slanted & Enchanted, though not quite as great as either of those albums. It's still a fun listen, the title track seems vaguely familiar with me, as does the Simon & Garfunkel cover bonus song (which is lovely). I don't think there's quite enough sticking to me to give it a 4, but I can see myself returning to it.
I don't rate these based on expanded editions and such, but the anniversary/expanded editions of this one have some great songs as well (including Mrs. Robinson). Overall a bit generic, even with a unique sound, but quality music.
Not bad, but mediocre enough that I will have forgotten all about it next week. 3 stars is probably even too generous...
Standard 90s rock. I didn’t hate it but it was all kind of samey after a while. Decent for what it is but that’s about it. Added to playlist: It’s A Shame About Ray
Meh. Right in the middle.
Pretty cute little pop rock songs. Starts out better than it finishes though. 5/10
It's got some nice tunes. Mostly it's just fine
Baffled honestly: the only thing I remember out of this album was the closing track being a cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s song “Mrs Robinson” but it was rock. Wasn’t the best thing I’ve listened to but I wasn't complaining by any means. Just mid.
An enjoyable alt-rock album from the early 1990s but the first half had samey songs and nothing really stood out of the whole album - it also felt similar to other alt-rock albums from the same era.
Decent album. A lot of songs including demo versions.
Nothing special but also not annoying or bad. Just not really interesting
An album of 90s family sitcom intros. Incredibly loving and earnest and genuine, but sometimes it's so sappy that it just blows right past me. Who approved the album art, by the way? I love the cheesiness of 90s album art, but the colors on this one just makes me a little bit sad. A Hulk-colored 3.5/5.
Yea this is good. Nice punk rock vibe, would listen again
Rock alternativo. Un megahit (encima cover). Ni fu ni fa.
This is a fun album. All the songs are enjoyable, but they do start to blend together pretty quickly. There’s nothing wrong with the album per se, but it’s not incredibly inspiring either. Just nice and relaxing. 3/5
Ok album, a lot of the songs didn’t move me. Nice to hear some Boston music. Mrs Robison is still a great cover.
I remember a couple of these. Pretty good 90s record.
Absolutely bang average indie pop. Nothing to see here people, move along.
They can't all be zingers. 90's purgatory music.
A couple good songs, mostly average
This was fine, nothing special but easy to listen to
Maybe 4 stars?
ok. not sure why this is in the list but its of a time when life was simpler and more jangly
It's A Shame About Ray by The Lemonheads is a classic alternative rock album that has stood the test of time. Released in 1992, the album features some of the band's most iconic songs and has influenced countless artists since its release. Overall, I would give this album a 3.5 out of 5 rating. One of the standout tracks on the album is the title track, "It's A Shame About Ray." The catchy guitar riff and Evan Dando's unique vocals make this song an instant classic. Another standout track is "My Drug Buddy," which features a stripped-down, acoustic sound that perfectly complements the song's melancholy lyrics. Other notable tracks on the album include "Alison's Starting to Happen," "Rudderless," and "Bit Part." The Lemonheads showcase their versatility with these songs, exploring different tempos and moods while still maintaining a cohesive sound throughout the album. The only downside to the album is that some of the tracks feel a bit repetitive at times, especially the remastered version on Spotify. While the songs are all strong individually, listening to the album straight through can become a bit monotonous. However, this is a minor criticism in an otherwise great album. Overall, It's A Shame About Ray is a must-listen for fans of alternative rock. The Lemonheads' unique sound and Evan Dando's songwriting make this album a standout in the genre. While it may not be perfect, the album's strengths far outweigh its weaknesses, and it remains a classic of its time.
Mrs Robsinson carried this to the list. The rest was ok.
its like a mix between punk and Elvis costello honestly not bad rudderless is cool and this has the famous version of ms Robinson 3.5
Some good songs, but otherwise. Nit gonna save this album
A little bland, some decent tunes though
It's a shame that It's a shame about Ray didn't make me feel shame for not caring about how or why Ray was being shamed.
A surprisingly early example of pop-punk. Catchy upbeat tunes with playfully clever lyrics, this one is a fun listen. Fav Tracks: Allison's Starting to Happen, Hannah & Gabi, Ceiling Fan in my Spoon, Mrs. Robinson
ok tier ça passe crème sur disneyXD
2.5/5
The first part of the album was fun to listen to. Different, kinda lively. The demo tracks on the second half were painful to listen to in comparison. I'm giving it a three, but likely would've given it a 4 if they'd have skipped the demo tracks.
Easy listening but nothing too exciting
Enjoyed but probably won't rush back to listen
Liked this one
Probably one of the only albums I don’t own that will be on this list from this era. Listening to it now, I realize this is the reason I didn’t own it. It’s not that good. It’s ok. And sounds typical for the era and fairly unremarkable
It's a Shame About Ray is the fifth album by American alternative rock band the Lemonheads. This grunge album was a commercial success, especially after they included the worldwide phenomenon track Mrs. Robinson - which is a cover of the same song by Simon & Garfunkel. I liked this album and its music, and am now interested to see what other music The Lemonheads have made. Great grunge album here.
Perfectly inoffensive and quite nice to listen to on a sunny day in the park. Liked the little grunge sprinkles in there. Would never be mad if it was on but didn't ever grab me hugely. Fave track: Rudderless
It’s fun
upbeat and fun.
Mjög langt síðan ég hlustaði á þessa. Hún heldur sér ágætlega.
sounded like 1992
I had this album soon after it was released because I liked the title track. I remember listening to the rest of the album back then and not being that into it. I’m glad it came up in the rotation because all these years later it’s good to give it another chance, something I occasionally thought about doing since then but never did. Listening to it now, I hear the “jangle pop” style that I definitely missed more than 30 years ago when this album was released. It’s better than I remember. It gets a little bland at times, but overall it’s solid. I had not known Juliana Hatfield was a member of the band when this album was recorded. She’s so talented. Would have loved to hear her sing and lead more on this album. I don’t remember hearing this band after this album. I might check out their later work to see where they took things. Reading the Wikipedia entry on the band, sounds like their were constantly changing personnel.
This 90s stuff always gets me. Reminds me of simpler times I think. This was a fun one. It won't make my favorites list, but I'll probably revisit it from time to time. 6.5/10
Helt okej album men saknar låtar som sticker ut.
There are 2 or 3 singles on this that I actually enjoyed a bit, but overall I just never understood the hype around this one. Sounds like pretty standard power pop done in a typical 90's fashion to me, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but everything just kind of blurs together after a while.
Never heard of "The Lemonheads"...but, I quite enjoyed this album!
Sucesión de canciones un poco monocordes, bastante parecidas entre sí, con pocos acompañamientos, principalmente guitarra, y con una voz correcta. Estilo pop
Good cover of Mrs Robinson, rest is ok
Don't know much about Ray that makes those have a shame for him but what I will say is this: It's a Shame About Ray is a short, sweet and concise collection of songs that peaks throughout with little droughts and ends just as it was bound to go some place else, which is to say a rather appropriate way to end things. Those who have lemons for heads sure do know how to make some sweet power pop. Favorites: Confetti, Rudderless, Bit Part, Alison's Starting to Happen, Hannah & Gabi, Kitchen, Ceiling Fan in My Spoon, Frank Mills.
Never heard this before, but it was pretty good
This is a lot of energy and noise that doesnt seem to get anywhere. Its not that it doesn't sound fine, it just leaves me flat.
Nice
It's got that distinctive 90's sound.
Prima rustige achtergrond rock, verder niet heel interessant.
A good listen
To be honest, I neither like it nor dislike it... I am a fan of the 90's alt rock scene tho, so I did like some of the tracks. Maybe I wasn't born in the right time where I would appreciate this album more.
It almost seems like the progenitor of a thousand bands who turn up in 90s teen film soundtracks. The pop end of the more tortured grunge stuff - this casts a wider more relatable net and manages to be kind of poppy (something I think Evan Dando hated). Nothing is too memorable but all of it is good. It's sort of what you'd get if you sanded the pixies down, have them a lick of paint and a varnish. Less interesting but easier to deal with.
You know their cover of Mrs Robinson? It’s like that
I liked this album. It doesn't sound very 90s to me at all, which is likely a good thing honestly. Favorite track: Confetti
decent
Its okay but, other than the Mrs. Robinson cover, nothing really stands out. I like Rudderless.
While it's a decent rock album, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, every song on the album just blends together. I couldn't tell you any stand out song nor could I recall any other than my favorite. 3/5. Favorite Track: Bit Part
Owes a debt to Elvis Costello and punk bands like Husker Du and The Replacements. Ernest, jangly fun, but I feel like you understand what it's about by about halfway through. Favorite tracks: "It's A Shame About Ray", "My Drug Buddy", "Alison's Starting To Happen"
So Mrs Robinson isn't actually a proper part of this album but a later added bonus track? Well all the grungy kids at school loved the Lemonheads, I never hated them then, and I don't now. Don't love them enough to listen to it 3 times though.
I like their style, but every song felt too similar to get any appeal from this album
Other than their famous cover of a really popular song, there is nothing exceptional about this album. Everything is quite average. Not bad, but not worthy of inclusion for an average early proto pop punk band.
Met hoe goed Mrs. Robinson is is de rest een beetje teleurstellend
Generally likable but not very memorable, and nothing like life-changing. Fun but normie, and a bit tiresome, too, as it's not nearly as clever as it thinks it is. In the end, not much better than just okay.
OK
Pretty good 90’s alt-rock/power-pop. A little too laid-back for my taste. I think Sloan’s “Twice Removed” would’ve been a better inclusion on the list over this record, it’s a little more fun.
An old friend, comfy without being too memorable or making me heart anything new
Overall good albums with entertaining version of Mrs Robinson
It has a charming authenticity to it, an endearing amatuerness. But by the end, it simply gets far too samey for me. I like it, don't love it.
Not a bad album. This has been the second rock album I’ve gotten now (Arcade Fire) and I prefer this one significantly. Hannah & Gabi was by far my favorite song.
I liked it at first then got a little bored halfway in. All in all not bad, I'm sure the best 5 songs on the album would make a better picture of the band than the whole thing.
I know people for whom this is a defining album. Maybe if I’d have bought it then it would be for me too. It’s good. It’s just good. Not spectacular.
It's good, but there is a bit of filler, which there shouldn't be in an album of only half an hour. The best track (Mrs Robinson) wasn't even on the original album and is (obviously) a cover.
6/10 not bad, decently fun to listen to but pretty forgettable , lyrics felt formulaic.
It's pleasant enough, but I can see nothing about this album that makes it stand out in any way - certainly not enough to be rated among 1001 "greats"
