Reviews (page 11 of 14)
i will always maintain they have the exact same appeal as AC/DC, songs with great tone that are really fun to chant in a stadium, not much more. this shit just isn't moving idk, maybe i just think the gallaghers are wankers
Oasis was formative or me, but I prefer "Morning Glory" to this album.
They’re kinda cheesy, but boy do I have a soft spot for this era. 3.5/5
I don't particularly like Oasis although my teenage self was known to belt out Wonderwall in the clubs. I listened to this a couple of times to see if I was missing something but I thought it was just okay. Fairly non offensive but boring Brit Pop. Highlights: Live Forever Supersonic Cigarettes & Alcohol
This was a lot of fun, but I don’t think it’s aged particularly well. This band’s lyrics are pretty silly and it’s just not that interesting to me anymore. Of course, my opinion is probably tinted by getting too many Britpop bands from this list, already.
Oasis has one good album and this isn’t it. Personally, I’ve just always preferred Drive Shaft so maybe biased.
Not maybe, that’s definitely Oasis
When they said I should feed my head, that to me is just a day in bed.
pretty good overall with some great singles. a+ instrumentals. not a shocker that this is one of the things that propelled guitarpop back into UK charts
Good to finally hear this album after hearing the name so many times over the years, thought I would know a song on it but alas I didn't, which Is a bit of a disappointment in that regard but the songs were overall good, might have to come back to it after some time to see if it changes my opinion.
Kinda longwinded but I do like it. Not as quintessential as what's the story morning glory but in some ways better; songwriting is sharp and whole thing sounds together. best tracks: rock n roll star, supersonic, married with children.
3.5
Definitely maybayyyyyyyyyyy Yo this album is LOUD.
Solid britpop album that’s surprisingly hard-rocking and guitar heavy. It’s a nice album to listen to but I didn’t really hear anything special about it. I would listen to it again but it seemed too paint-by-numbers to be on this list.
ok. Good pop
I have never been a big Oasis fan, and this album changes nothing about that. While I like the opener Rock'n'Roll Star quite a bit, the remaining songs (except for the acoustic closer Married With Children) bring nothing new to the table and leave a lot to be desired in the variation department - especially absent are memorable melodies. This album, then, is just OK ... ish. 2.5/5
Gives me nostalgia about pretending to like them to be cool in high school. But some songs genuinely do hit lol
Oasis did a great job on this one
Another one that didn't grab me as expected. Weirdly only just had a Blur vs Oasis discussion with someone on the weekend. They claimed that the first two Oasis albums top anything Blur ever put out which I think is total bullshit.
Quite a catchy sound and good, clean alt-rock guitars. Not a big fan of the singing. 3/5
Britpop was not something I got into when it came out. Grunge was in its last throes (weird as I write this, it's the anniversary of Cobain's death...). I watched a documentary on Britpop, and saw it was basically Blur vs. Oasis. I didn't know this album was such a big impact on the scene. Critics were looking for the next big thing, and this was so bright as opposed to the stuff from Seattle, characterized by doom and gloom. The problem at first for me was I couldn't separate the band from the dysfunction, so it took a few songs for me to get into the music. But I did come around after a while, even though the band was (for the most part) homaging so many other works. One song I gravitated towards was "Cigarettes & Alcohol". In Wikipedia, Alex Niven typified "Cigarettes & Alcohol" as a "twelve-bar blues rock song" and "a classicist boiling-down of the Rolling Stones' rebel rock archetype". But I mean... come ON. It is so obviously "Get it On" bt T-Rex. Even so, I don't think of it as them ripping them off, I think of it more as an homage. Because really the whole album is that, an homage to those great bands that came from Britain in the 60s and early 70s, but with a new shine on it. Everything old is new again. Anyway, I liked the album a lot more than I expected to ("what, no Wonderwall?"). And many of the songs were pretty catchy to me. But they weren't very distinct. They still had a bit of that 90s sheen to it. It didn't feel like they were loosening up until the end with songs like "Cigarettes & Alcohol" and "Married with Children." But that might just be me.
On the plus side, this album RAWKS. On the minus side, Liam Gallagher's voice and his behavior annoy the crap out of me. Not to mention all the "second coming of the Beatles" over-hype crap makes me automatically want to knock this down a point or two. Funny thing is I wrote almost the same thing for their second album. At least they're consistent. 3.
Hard rock. I liked it- I think I need to listen to it more to give it a higher rating. I personally felt this its just a bit too hard rock- if it wasn’t so loud I think i would have liked it better. I personally don’t like that mid to late 90s sound of harsh drums.
There's some great songs, but also some songs that could be more catchy. 3.5/5
Great! I prefer "What's the Story (Morning Glory)", but this album is wonderful as well.
Definitely...Maybe.. good - I haven't been much of an Oasis fan for most of my life, but now hindsight makes me appreciate them much more. This record is not as good as others - despite having some great tracks here, it does not feel like one that I would revisit. Good, but not their best.
If sneering had a voice it would be this. If all the instruments were tuned down slightly Liam Gallagher would probably be in tune, but unfortunately they weren’t so instead it just sounded like someone had plonked a peg on his nose.
eh it wasn’t bad but it wasn’t really especially good or anything.
The only song I know off this album is Supersonic but I ended up really liking it so I hope the rest of the album is as solid. I honestly really enjoyed Cigarettes and Alcohol, the message behind it was super dark but the way he says sunshine in the chorus really annoys me. Digsy's Diner was really good too, and no annoying pronunciations set me off while listening so that's cool. I also thought Married With Children, from the first couple riffs I started to think, "Wow this is pretty cool." I still think my favorite is still Supersonic but we'll see if anything changes.
This rocks more than that its successor, which I gave 4 stars a year ago, and in my memory this album was the better album out of the two. But today the vocals are irritating like hell. Together we flyyyyyyy blah blah. To be fair, on a different moment, I might enjoy it again, so 3 stars.
I saw Oasis in a tiny pub when their first single was released. They were crap. I feel warmer towards them now but they do magpie a lot of stuff. The swagger is good.
Pretty Mid. Glad I made it this far in my life without listening to an entire oasis album. Probably would’ve liked it more if I was younger.
The instrumental are great but the vocals sucks
Amazing in 1994, feels a bit one-note now, the follow up was more interesting
Banco oasis la vdd 7/10
A man said "sUnShyiiiiien" Never really been an Oasis fan but was pleasantly surprised. Fave track - Supersonic
Songs are quite long and a bit repetitive favs - Supersonic Digsy Dinner Married with Children
Banger
3.5 - It’s like drinking some national lager, like a Budweiser or a Carlsberg or a Heineken - satisfying enough though neither interesting nor memorable. At best it provides a backdrop for good times with friends.
Didn’t hold up as well as I hoped, although I admire how liam can get so many syllables out of the word “shine”
Another Oasis album? I gave Morning Glory 5 stars, how much more fucking pandering do the Brits need?!? How the hell haven't I heard any Beatles yet? For the first two tracks, I liked the familiar Oasis sound but a little grittier. I was thinking I hadn't heard any of this music before until Live Forever came on and an omnipresent 'uuuggghhh' surrounded me. Gonna live forever. Right, forgot about that one. Supersonic is a fine song, but I'd like to hear it faster and tighter. Overall this album is pretty good. Nothing stands out too much, just consistent. I love the spirit, but maybe the song craft is not quite developed. I just never got hooked by this. Maybe it's a bit dated. It is interesting to hear the seeds of what Oasis will become though.
I can't say I like these guys as individuals or understand their status as superstars. It's OK but it's their swagger I don't like.
Not their best album. Middle-of-the-road Britpop.
not that keen on vocals; but the lush guitars and cheery pop tunes are enjoyable. Actually, the vocals are mildly irritating. typical white man whine at the end of every long note really gets on your nerves. no lyrical standouts, but god the instrumentals are fantastic. faves: live forever,
3/5. A fairly good rock album but some songs do not hit. They seem like pop songs forced onto rock songs.
- I feel like Oasis was the Coldplay of the 90’s
Okay--I vaguely recalled some of these songs, and thought it was pretty good, then wondered, "Wait, who's Oasis?" So I looked at their top songs--which are all from their later album and include... Wonderwall. Of meme fame. And Champagne Supernova, etc. I like this older album a bit better, it was more cluttered and had scratchy edges which I enjoyed. Overall though? This just isn't long-term-love music for me. It's good alt rock.
I was really hoping to give this a low score. I hate Oasis. All of it. I listened to this album a year ago and hated it. So why don't I hate it now? This is bearable now, perhaps due to my slow appreciation of noisier rock and electronic music. The vocalist is whiney and the instrumentation is too loud and busy, but not in an aesthetically pleasing way like many shoegaze bands I'm into. More than any other Britpop band, Oasis takes inspiration from the Madchester movement; I'm hearing a lot of Happy Mondays and Primal Scream. It relies on the same repetitive formula of conflicting swirly and groovy guitars and woozy drawn-out vocals. It's not as versatile or interesting as bands like Ride. A lot of fans obsess over this album. Has a ton of hits that were big in the UK, in addition to the fan favorite "Slide Away". They're dispersed well to keep audiences engaged. For me, the only standout is the pop hit "Live Forever", it's catchy and full of energy, and I like the jangly guitars. The only issue is the solo is a bit on the generic side. I can see why this record was so influential with middle-class anthems like "Cigarettes & Alcohol" but besides the hooks and cheery instrumentation, it feels unnecessarily busy, as if it's trying to say a lot without actually saying anything. On the other hand, it was hard for me to hate any of the tracks. And trust me, I tried. "Bring it On Down" is out-of-place, starting out with a Joy Division-like gothic intro and then turning out to be pretty forgettable. Many songs start to get annoying by the half way point due to the extensive lengths, but this is the worst with "Shakermaker". I could see the appeal of "Slide Away" which probably has his best vocal performance and powerful guitar chords to emotionally impact audiences, but it still felt empty to me. This might be a grower. Favorites: Live Forever, Up in the Sky, Digsy's Diner
3+
I didn't quite get it but I could with more listens i think
It's good, but "whats the story morning glory" is better. It was their first album, it was definitely different than the mid-90s grunge music.
I think this means we are officially done with Oasis since there are only two well known albums. Enjoyed this one about as much as the last one. Just a couple of guys jamming in a small apartment by the looks of the cover. After listening to the whole thing, I think I liked their other album more, nothing really stood out for me on this one.
Really didn't expect that we'd get a second album from Oasis after getting the one with "Wonderwall" AND "Champagne Supernova." There are a few tracks on here that I liked, and I especially enjoy the chord progression of "Slide Away," but I can't help but think of other albums that deserve a spot here instead of another from these guys. I mean, they're pretty good, but this isn't "1001 Pretty Good Albums," a list like that could be made at random. Decent album, but it's on the chopping block. Favorite tracks: Slide Away, Live Forever, Supersonic. Album art: Guys sitting around, laying around in a flat I presume. Brainstorming on their next pretty good rock album. Title's perfectly wishy-washy too. 3/5
3+
I always gave my son shit about this band, saying they were nothing but a modern Beatles. I know that statement is not true, but still doesn't make me a big fan. Also, those guys have the most punchable face in music. I'd like to beat the shit out of both of them. Pretty sure I could take both, at the same time no less. But I'd buy them a beer after I kick their ass..... Rock n Roll star was first song and probably my favorite song on the Album. Know Live Forever and Supersonic from the radio and enjoyed both. Songs that surprised me and enjoyed, Up in the Sky and Married with children. Overall, wasn't a bad listen. I'll say a 3, but really a 2.5 because these guys just look like they should get their ass kick anytime they show their face
Some good hits but not as solid as their first album
Knowing them only from “Wonderwall”, this was pretty good. At its best made me think about underwater cities, which is a winner for me. iirc there’s like a fan feud between them and Blur? going off this, I think I’m probably Team Blur
Mediocre and muddy
Pretty good vibes going on. Certainly sounds like the 90's
Needs a relisten but I like the rough sounds
Definitely OK
Some nice British 90s rock. Honestly pretty good if you forget they are the band that made wonderwall.
It's fine. Oasis is fine.
Pretty ok, finally some not metal.
Not their best album - that would easily be What's the story morning glory'. Some great tracks on this but in retrospect it sounds a bit unsophisticated in both the production and arrangement..
Some bangers with the rest being kind of annoying
So now it's time for the less known album of one of the most overplayed bands in history (in commercial radio and whenever someone has a guitar in hostel). There is a lot of controversies around the group, especially Gallagher brothers, but I think the quality of music talked louder than other non-artistic excesses they provided to tabloids. The only one I was interested in was their rivalry with Blur, which died pretty early on. Definitely Maybe is a proper example of the brit pop/rock genre that started afresh in 90s, but the album was still leaning into a little bit heavier tunes, taking some pages from grunge and even late punk. The record has fewer of the big hits Oasis produced on later albums, which makes this one really consistent and very equal all around. The songs flow from one to another In a cohesive way, making it easy to listen to, but also making it a little too predictable and overall uneventful. It is very easy to listen to the whole album on autopilot, just forgetting something is on in the background. The two supposedly highlights of the record, "Supersonic" and "Cigarettes & Alcohol" don't have that magic yet, as they would achieve with Wonderwall, for example. Overall its a very nice album, just lacking any spark, but clearly showing that the band is capable of much more in the future.
I can’t seem to find the words for this album. Maybe this is a product of its time, preaching to the youth of the 90’s. Maybe it’s the overwhelming sound they produce. Maybe it’s the bias from the Gallagher Brothers inevitable falling out and impressive feats of being C*nts. Maybe it’s the fact that you can visually identify a diehard Oasis fan from how much of a moron they are. Maybe I can find the words to describe the general ambivalence towards this album. Yes, definitely maybe.
A'ight
I was more team Blur back in the day. But I did still appreciate the musicality of the Oasis camp. This album was better than I remember it and very polished. Don’t quite understand how the Gallagher brothers managed it.
I understand there is a loyal following for this band. This album has a good sound but, for me, there was something missing, something sterile...or hollow maybe, that left me a bit empty.
Great to hear how it all started. Not one I'll go back too
Nice, classic 90s British pop sound. Fav track: Live Forever
Good album. Can't believe I've never heard it.
Wasn’t horrible. Like some of the music. Would listen to it again but wouldn’t add to playlist or spend money on it.
Powerful, straightforward rock and roll, with a lot of that English flair that Oasis specializes in. To me, they are an obvious extension of the Madchester sound of the 1980's with a cleaner and more powerful vibe.
Overplayed and a bit whiny in places
I liked Live Forever and Cigarettes & Alcohol, but to me a lot of the album got repetitive and just sort of background music.
The first album from Oasis. I've got to say that the second one, (What's the story) Morning Glory, is a lot better. There's a few good songs on this album such as Live Forever and Supersonic but overall every song just blends together and there's not really anything that sticks out.
Nostalgia. I remember it being better.
Some solid tracks where the whine was dialed down. Overall, their best moments were overshadowed by their worst.
Not as good as Morning Glory, but pretty good album 4 "Live Forever" was the early wonderwall. 3
I like that old style of genre. Beginning of the album is a time stamp to that era
One of the better Britpop albums that I’ve had the misfortune of coming across on the generator so far, which isn’t saying much really. File under: another one of those albums that I know is objectively great but doesn’t do much for me personally.
Like most things to do with Oasis, this is over rated. I can see why it stood out in the early 90's though.
Great rock energy on this album but if you played a song I couldn’t tell you if it was on this album or not.
It just feels like an inferior version of the revolver album by the Beatles, just 30 years later
I definitely maybe want to hear this one again and again. 3/5
Definitely dated.
Never been an Oasis fan
I thought it was fine. The classic sound of the 1990s. The group definitely helped to inspire a entire generation of music like this, so full credit there. The album itself doesn't really thrill me; it's not bad, just not spectacular or exciting. Not an album that I will come back to often, but I do understand the iconic nature of the album and the heavy influence it has had on the industry. Fave tracks: Shakermaker, Cigarettes & Alcohol
samey
Sounds like Oasis.
I never really thought this album was all that great when I first heard it ages ago. It's not terrible but I never understood the hype. Live Forever is pretty terrific but outside of that its a lot of songs ranging from "listenable" to "good" with a couple annoyances thrown in "Shakermaker", I'm looking at you. I think they got better with the next album. I actually think Be Here Now might be overall more enjoyable than this one as well. Now that's a hot take!
Prefer this over Morning Glory. It's alright I guess. 6-7/10
Much, much less interesting than Morning Glory
solid, not as good as I remembered.
Jusy super standard. Not awful, but not for me
Heaps of Merseybeat, psychedelic and pop trivia. Nevertheless, the album set a sales record for a debut album. (6/10) FT: Live Forever, Up In The Sky
I'm struggling with this one. It just completely faded into the background on both listens. When reviewing the track listing I was like "huh Supersonic was on this, Cigerettes & Alcohol" no recollection at all. Maybe because nodoby is home and I decided to play this on my speakers instead of using headphones?
I wanted to like this album more than I ended up liking it. "What's the Story Morning Glory" is much more my style. A lot of these songs blurred together for me, so nothing stood out, but it was a fine enough listen. I'll give it a 3.5, rounded down to 3 for this scale's whole-number system.
Samey by the time you get to track 3.
Definitely Maybe by Oasis (1994) I was intrigued to read (Wikipedia) that in a 2005 BBC poll, this record was #4 on the list of most overrated albums ever, but in a 2006 NME poll, it was voted the #1 best album of all time, finishing just above Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles (1967). Are you kidding me? What’s going on here? Don’t get me wrong. This album is good, but clearly there’s a divergence of opinion. I just note this in passing. Lyrics here fall into a pattern of fizzling at the end of each song, unraveling into repetitive poetic codas before the demands of musical closure. This, on top of the standard weakness of superfluous phrases being used to fill out the metrical scheme renders these lyrics mildly clever at best. And the message of the weirdly out of place closing track “Married with Children” will make you not want to be. The music is good, with electric rhythm guitar recorded using heavy sustain, and nice chord progressions that are easy on the ears yet with enough variety to keep the listener engaged. This the central feature of everything that’s good about this album. And it’s also the most ‘American-sounding’ feature. Sorry if that disappoints the blokes on the other side of the pond, but there it is. Lead guitar stylings by Noel Gallagher are ok, but not flashy or soulful. There’s a nice drum groove by Tony Carroll in the opening bars of both “Live Forever”and “Bring It on Down”, but elsewhere the percussion is merely standard. And Paul McGuigan’s bass playing is usually just ‘in there somewhere’. Lead vocals by Liam Gallagher are consistently characterized by this cloying, exaggerated, drawn out rounding of vowels which, I suppose, serves to compensate for a very limited range and a very deficient timbre. [Picture this: Wouldn’t it be fun for four guys to sit down in an Italian ristorante in Brooklyn and all together order lasagna the way Liam Gallagher repeatedly pronounces it on “Digsy’s Dinner”? They’d be thrown outta da place.] And his falsetto is really bad. This band would sound a lot better with a different lead singer. But if you like the multi-layer rock rhythm guitar textures that you’ll hear on this album (and I do) it’s quite satisfactory. 3/5
I can see the appeal. It isn’t bad, it’s enjoyable but not ‘great’.
A lesser outing as compared to the masterpiece of 'Morning Glory' that would follow in '95. That being said, this isn't a bad album by any means - one can hear the slow churn of early grunge mixing in with Britpop, even if the two disparate genres still seem a little at odds.
I thought Wonderwall was on this album?
Like it more than I expected. Is it just more or is this mix very muddy though?
Oasis songs all sound pretty similar, but with that, it is easy listening. Solid album
I remember this being released, fairly sure it was played many times where I worked but a good chunk of this still seemed unfamiliar. Supersonic was played everywhere and maybe, because of that, was one of my least favourites on here. Shakermaker and Married With Children are ones I would come back to.
Better than 'What's the Story Morning Glory', this one has a few tracks I genuinely quite like but on the whole it's still not a brilliant album - Oasis just not super my thing
I can absolutely see why some people love this. It's catchy, fun, uplifting, and energetic. But its also not very tight, samey through and through, and personally Liam's vocals really get to me after a while. I still liked it, but definitely no more than that.
This very much reminds me of the mid-90s: overblown and bland.
This was ok, Sunsheeeeiiiiiinnnee
A tad rudimental, no? But for all that, effective rock 'n' roll. My views on Oasis have mellowed with age, and I've come to appreciate the idiosyncratic vocal delivery pitched halfway between John Lennon and Johnny Rotten. A nice, stompy collection of of big rock numbers that delivers subtlety like a smack around the chops - and all the better for it.
Bland and boring and sounds like everything else bland and boring, or at least it spawned its own brand of bland and boring (which they do very well, mind you). In either case, no thanks.
I looked supersonic but not enough to want to listen to this album again.
Fine rock album.
Siblings always produce really good music when they hate each other. 3.5/5.
Ihan hyvät rallattelut. Omaan korvaan ehkä turhankin puhki soitettu bändi eikä vuosien tauonkaan jälkeen tunnu mitenkään raikkaalle.
Ehtaa Oasista
Oh wow. So Oasis ISN'T just Wonderwall. Yeah this album is much better than Wonderwall. But nothing really stands out on it's own imo. It's just okay.
Ég átti „Wonderwall“ plötuna en kannski kom þessi í safnið seinna. Ég var alltaf meiri Blur maður þótt ég heillaðist alveg aðeins af þessu hráa. Alvöru plata, 52 mínútur.
This is better than 901 of the albums on this list. Oasis is fantastic. However, their two big hits on this album sound very similar. Starts off with slow drums, followed up with guitar riffs, etc... Very Oasis, which is not a bad thing. You can probably get your Oasis fix with "(What's the story) Morning Glory" and be fat and happy. I don't think this album adds anything that Oasis hasn't achieved with the other album on this list.
Not a huge fan of Oasis but it is ok I guess.
I had very low expectations going in. Never really liked their radio stuff. But I was pleasantly surprised. Didn't blow me away, but there are some very good tracks on this album. 3.5 stars.
I don’t think I ever listened to Oasis for a protracted period before and honestly wasn’t that impressed. A monotone and kind of grating guitar sound, pretty dull drum and bass, and lyrics that are superficially glib but not really saying much. Workmanlike rock but is there any real innovation?
Meh. It was OK.
Sounds super 90s and really dated. Songs go on way too long and probably could have cut a bunch of them. First time listening to Oasis and probably first time I've ever heard a full song by them and I'm not impressed. I'd give it 2.5/5 but I'll round up to 3 since for the Wonderwall meme and guitar players.
This is fine. It was fine when I listened to it in 1994. Never understood the massive hype around this band.
Wow. NOT what I was expecting. I’ve listened to a ton of Oasis and love them but I’ve not listed to this specific album lots. Some gems, but a lot is frankly not good.
Mixed feelings. Some hits on here, a LOAD of nostalgia as a Manchester lad, but it's not a great album to listen through. The production is just so aggressive that the snare rattles my teeth, also the plodding tempos are tiring. Columbia was a nice surprise though. I don't think I've knowingly heard that before. Good for what it is, but not a killer.
Introduction to Oasis. Pretty good band. Pretty good album. Don’t know if this album is worth introducing the world to Liam and Noel.
Oasis just not my tempo. I have no nostalgic connection to this album (which seems to fuel a LOT of the praise in these ratings), it all sounds a bit samey, and every song could have a good 60-90 seconds shaved off.
Well, I felt throughout the listening that this album met me at the wrong age. (Also, pop songs were used to be so long )
Third favorite oasis album out of Be here now and Morning Glory but still pretty fun. Enjoyed live forever
What I just heard is probably one of the best summarization of the '90s alternative rock tsunami. Unfortunately, that's what "Definitely Maybe" seemed to only do, it just summarized rock sounds of its time. They did it well though, but focusing on the sound for almost an hour? It gets tiresome after a while. I only knew Oasis as the "Wonderwall" boys. It was narrated that their name was used to be "Rain", after the Beatles song released almost three decades earlier. Apparently, Oasis based their sound on the mentioned track. But while one can hear The Beatles's "Rain" in it, the sound of "Definitely Maybe" is heavily grunge-like. The grunge and alt-rock songs of '90s and even the '00s can be heard in these rock songs driven by the deliciously hazy guitars. It's so '90s rock. Unfortunately, this makes the album generic. But it's still fun nonetheless. At least in small doses. It's interesting how it went from this to "Wonderwall". Even the chill closing track is different from it. Perhaps they're still finding their sound here.
Hatsikidee 3 punten.
Listening to the remastered version. It sounds good, the songs are nice but I don't really connect with them as I would 10 years ago. Some of these songs will definitely go on a playlist of mine.
It is Oasis - Has Slide Away, so that is nice.
Decent but forgettable
I could have sworn I liked oasis but this album really didn't do it for me.
enjoyable. but not too much
7/10
A generous 3 for nostalgia reasons. Definitely reminds me of being a 90s child.
6/10
Good songs but not a lot of them catch my attention or stick out as really good to me. I really enjoyed Live Forever and the last three songs: Digsy's Dinner, Slide Away, and Married With Children. I've loved Married With Children for a long time now and have never heard anything else from this album so I was surprised to hear that it sounds completely different from all the other songs. The production is stripped back and the vocals gentler. All the other songs kinda sound the same to me with the songs I mentioned sounding the best. I'll listen to them more in the future and maybe give the album another listen. Sometimes albums really grow on me after another listen.
Enjoyable. Kinda feel like you had to be there though. Lots of nice guitar
great album from the britpop era
Innocuous 90's rock.
So much of this album is a lot of the same. Doesn't quite take me on a "journey" the way my favorite albums do. That isn't always a problem, but I am not in love with Oasis' sound. Good music, but not necessarily for me. 3.5/5
A decent album. I was not familiar with really any of the songs but they had a 90s feel to them. This album did not have any of really well known songs.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Heard most of the good stuff already on the radio.
Still their best, but on relistening it's so lumpy and uninspiring - just walls of barre chords, pentatonic solos and nothing lyrics. It hangs together purely on Liam's sneer and volume.
Rock n Roll Star - meh (2) Shaker maker - pretty solid song. (3) Live Forever - groovy and catchy (4) Up in the Sky - opening rift is nice, not bad (3) Columbia - meh song, kinda generic (2.5) Super Sonic - Quite the bop (4) Bring It Down - okay (2.5) Cigarettes & Alcohol - boring (2.5) Digsy's Dinner - groovy (3.5) Slide Away - love the guitar in this too long (3.5) Married with Children - nice ending, chill (4) Album is not bad, but the quite a few of the songs sound similar and I got bored with them. Live Forever, Super Sonic, and Married with Children are the best songs on the album. 2.8/5 Stars
Has that mid-90's "buzz balad" songs. Funny enough, this album contains none of the songs that I associate Oasis to.
Solid, competent album. Showed that Oasis had more range than I was expecting.
Hasn’t aged well
Not even their best album
Despite how unbearable the Gallagher brothers have become, this is a pretty kickass album. I'm not the biggest fan of Liam's voice, he just sounds a little stale to me, but I think the direction the band takes their music sort of makes it blend well. With something to prove for their debut album, Oasis comes out on top to give you a straight rock and roll album that brings that exciting live crowd energy right through your speakers. It espouses fun, positive sounds that were definitely a contrast to the popular dark, despairing tones grunge was emanating. However, I think the album is very one dimensional. It doesn't deviate much from the sound it creates in the opening track, and while that's not necessarily a bad thing, it doesn't make it a great record that I would really want to listen through again. Songs start to blend together in my mind, and you can tell they sort of took the foundation of some songs and expanded on them later for their popular hits. I'll probably just play some songs here and there as I want. Overall this album seemed like it was a bigger deal for the UK than the US with bringing back Britpop and rock to popularity, so it doesn't hold cultural significance for me. Favorite Song: Live Forever Least Favorite: Shakermaker
Never sat to listen to this. its a good album. not a favourite
this definitely struck me as more pop-punk than britpop, which I appreciated. a couple of tracks stood out but a lot of this just couldn't help but fade into the background, it didn't really grip me. 6/10
One of the things that irks me the most about Britpop is the abundance of 4-5 minute-long songs that seem to go nowhere. Also, Oasis overuses the word "maybe". Maybe if it wasn't in the album title and also the word they said the most in two of their most popular songs it wouldn't bother me as much. Ultimately, this was meh. 5/10
Just a few strong songs.
Not bad, not huge on oasis but some good tracks
Ahhh the famous Beatles tribute band........
First listen. Nice
I loved this album when it came out. I struggle to listen to it now because Liam is such a massive bellend. It turns out I cannot separate the art from the "artist"
not much oomph, bland but good. classic oasis
Good album but not “what’s the story morning glory”
Digsy’s Dinner and Married with Children were fun, and the rest of the songs weren’t bad exactly, but I found it irritating to listen to.
You know what. Not that great. These guys are whiny in retrospect
If I were to compare the output of the Brit bands of the 90s to their cohort grunge bands from the US, this is less dark and more melodic. Overall, I'm not really into this sound and I feel bad for the kids who missed out on the first wave of it in the 70s and the second in the 80s. The compositions and delivery are top drawer and it's easy to see why they were so popular. Supersonic is an anthemic debut single, Live Forever is good to, Cigarettes & Alcohol is totally Bang-a-Gong, but I'm sure Rick Beato would explain away that one, and apparently T-Rex borrowed it from Chuck Berry.
Had a few good and great songs but felt very repetitive. Not my favorite but didn’t hate it.
Very upbeat and happy. Would not listen to again.
Not as good as Morning Glory, but with some solid songs on it still.
I don’t like this band
Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. Some good tracks
A solid 90s rock album. I thought the drummer was kind of the standout for me on this album. I also realized that while I don't dislike Oasis at all, Liam Gallagher's voice isn't one that draws me in and at times even annoyed me a bit. Looking forward to hearing their other work on the list to see if I may be able to connect a bit more to it because the obvious talent and ability is there.
they just sound so much like oasis ya know? i liked the last song though
I like Oasis as much as the next person but I couldn't get through 3 hours of them. It was more my taste but a 3 hour album starts to sound repetitive as the songs go on
Definitely not more than three.
Definitely maybe ... i guess I’m not an oasis fan. That voice just doesn’t vibe with me.
Play Wonderwall! I think the British went all in for Oasis with this album, greatest band since the Beatles, etc. We Americans needed the broader range of their much better follow up record, and precious Wonderwall, a timeless acoustic torch song that countless aspiring guitar players would try to cover and use to get laid. I thought this album was great in patches. Some catchy songs. They keep the same sonic palette for the whole album - the big wall of chiming guitars are always ringing. It never lets up. There's no pauses for contrast. Play Wonderwall! Play Champagne Supernova! Play Cast No Shadow! The lyrics are full of convenient rhymes, but I really like the couplet on the final track "your music's shite, it keeps me up all night". B-
Hmm ok britpop but not necessarily something i can see myself coming back to often, it was alright tho. Better than i expected it to be and far exceeded wonderwall
God but not great, a lot of filler songs
Quite good but I need to be in the mood for it
I've never listened to this album and shamefully have always held the stance that I don't like Oasis, so I'm excited about this one.
Rock 'n' Roll Star: wtf? Oasis used to sound like this? what happened! rest of the album: oh this is why, because they sound like every other alt rock stadium band, though its hard to tell because they have always been aggressively generic. Married With Children is look ahead at the Oasis sound of (What's the Story) Morning Glory
Feels less polished than What's the Story. Since I've never listened to this album before, I don't have any emotional attachment to it. It was OK, didn't make me excited.
This album can really only be defined as loud. And for what reason? Beyond me completely
C'est correct. Rien de plus rien de moins.
Nice
Quite enjoyed this. Like the wall of sound production. Didn't find Liam Gallagher quite as intolerable as my teenage self used to! Fave track - "Columbia". Don't recall ever hearing it before, and liked it - I guess that's how I'd feel about the rest of the album if I were hearing it for the first time now!
Ehh
I respect Oasis and I REALLY like some of their songs, but they produce a wall of impenetrable sound that has always been unappealing to me. That's what most of this album is like for me, but I do have a soft spot for "Supersonic." I also liked "Bring it on Down," don't really know that song well, same with "Cigarettes and Alcohol." I appreciate "Married with Children" as a song and as an anomaly on this album.
Not bad, but not as good as I was expecting considering all the accolades. I really enjoyed this but I know others like a lot more than I do.
Kinda middle of the road but they did cover I am the walrus
Oasis never really did much for me and still don't. I actually expected to dislike this more but it's tolerable. I understand why people like it but as with a lot of music, I think it comes down to something in the vocal delivery and lyrics that irks me.
I find Oasis utterly vapid, that is likely influenced by the Gallagher brothers being so up their own asses. I find it tolerable, but nothing I'd ever go to listen to. The music is indifferent to me, but their drama is kind of ridiculous. Surface-level 90s Brit Pop to me.
Obviously you can hear the Beatles influence- but that’s ok.
Fav Song: Married with Children
definitivamente talvez.
Oasis had many of the hits of my childhood, this album had plenty of new songs I'd not heard.
3+ hour double album.. ugh it was fine if i just listened to the first disc
I liked this album okay, but in the context of this list, it suffers from the same problem that a lot of recent albums do. The list is absolutely saturated with Brit pop, and after a while it's hard (for me at least) to discern the merits of individual albums. In isolation, I think this album is pretty good. The production is excellent and a lot of the songs were likable. I can see why this would have proved to be a nice counterpoint to grunge/alternative in the mid-90s. However, this list gives me a new 90s/00s Brit pop album to listen to every week, and they're all starting to blend together 3/5
Never been a big Oasis fan but this album shows me that I’ve been wrong all this time.
I'm not sure this needed to be on the list. Best track: Supersonic
December 31st, New Year's Eve :\ Good album, one of the more enjoyable vocalists out of the Britpop albums I've heard imo, and I think that's a make or break for this genre, where a lot of it starts to sound samey. Standout Tracks: Rock 'n' Roll Star, Shakermaker, Cigarettes & Alcohol, Slide Away
Just kind of sounded monotone. Maybe it hit differently in the 90s.
Not my kind of music maybe definitely for now it may change but it made me really focking sleepy
So dull
Definitely maybe not a record I needed to listen to before I die.
definitely maybe? more like definitely mid. don’t really understand all the hype, it’s not a bad album it’s just not good either. there’s a few good songs (live forever, married with children) i don’t know, maybe just not my thing. i prefer blur
not my vibe
192. ok
This is perfectly pleasant pop rock through a radio friendly filter. The edgiest thing about the entire thing is that full wine glass on the floor in the album art. This is also about as exciting as a McDonald's vanilla shake. You know exactly what you're going to get with each track, and the most dangerous thing about it is maybe a sugar rush and a brain freeze. Oasis is not the new Stones, and they're not the new Beatles. Get off it. My Rating: 2/5
Well, I like a few of the melodies and structures. Shakermaker was alright. The rest of the album though, well, I think of it this way. Y'know when you hit the grocery store and they have the speakers up so you can hear the radio? And every now and then, they've got a random banger playing? Like, oh shit, Shoppers Food Warehouse is hip with Parliament, that's cool. Hey, Giant is playing some cut from Things Fall Apart, neat. That's a nice little addition to your grocery run. But most of the time over the speakers, there's just sort of airy, guitar-y music playing. Like, a band that could be one of a million other bands, kinda samey and safe and all. This album is kinda what I'd expect to hear in that situation. I know a lot of people like Oasis for the escape from grunge attitude and that's cool, lighter more optimistic music is cool. But I dunno if it has to be boring, and this kind of is to me.
Reasonable debut from the Burnage guys
i really couldn't tell if the song was over and the next song was playing or not. The riffs are pretty repetitive but this applies to oasis' entire discography. frankly, i listen to oasis when i need an energetic background music. i find it hard to stay focused throughout an entire song let alone an album. but they're an iconic example of brit pop-rock i guess.
Whine.
I like oasis but this is garbage
I really don’t get the comparisons between oasis and the Beatles. Especially when the stone roses are right there. It’s not bad. It’s just really generic. And i can help get wound up by the swagger you can hear through the songs, which i’m sure some people find endearing.
Very generic, not really my music. The only one I liked and the one I already knew was Live forever
TRES HORAS?
Definitely maybe one of my least favourite bands from this era. A couple of ok songs but really not my thing at all.
yeah, sure thing man. help yourself to the fridge, i'm gonna go paint some grass and watch it dry, and you let me know if you find anything interesting, alright?
First time listening to this in over 20 years and I can’t help but feel that (despite the recent reunion hype and hysteria resurfacing) that time hasn’t really been all that kind to this record. A couple of bangers aside, this was a particularly knackering listen. Plus it provided the template and precedent for every shite band with a mild attitude for the next 20 years to bleed the industry dry. We’re having lasagneeerrrr
I'm so used to hearing Oasis as soundtrack in 00's romcoms that I find it strange listening to them normally.
Ready Player One referencia???
was expecting more judging from the reviews, nothing overly offensive but i got bored once i realised every song sounded the same. wouldn't put myself through listening to the whole thing again
Never liked Oasis, tried my best to give it a proper go in good faith. True to form, it opens with two of the worst songs I’ve ever heard. After listening to them both, I felt like there was just a little less colour in the world. I’ll concede, songs 5-7 have their moments and so does Slide Away, but I always feel like I’m trying my best to ignore the vocals so I can enjoy the rest which at times is pretty cool. They’ve never been for me, not the worst album I’ve ever heard but also didn’t change my mind.
I am slightly familiar with Oasis but haven't dug into all of their stuff. I have 9 songs liked by them so far - but all are on the albums What's the Story Morning Glory? and Dig Out Your Soul. I don't think I've ever listened to this album before. Curious if I will recognize anything. Thoughts while listening 3 times ... 1st time through: - wow - this is really annoying - The vocals / singing style are very grating - the unrelenting wall of sound arrangement with all instruments turned up to 11 all of the time is also very irritating - I did sort of recognize "Live Forever", must have heard that before - Best song so far is the last song (Married with Children) because they ditched all of the annoying production 2nd time through - the first song "Rock and Roll Star" seems like the most generic rock song ever - "Up in the Sky" and "Columbia" are decent 3rd time through - - I was curious what else came out around this time. Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream, Cracker Kerosene Hat, Pearl Jam Vs all came out the year before (1993). These were released in the same year (1994) - Pearl Jam Vitalogy, Portishead Dummy, These were released the following year (1995) - Radiohead The Bends, Chemical Brothers Exit Planet Dust, Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. ALL of these are so much better than this. - I ended up liking "Live Forever", "Up in the Sky", "Columbia" and "Married with Children" Liked songs on Spotify: 4/11 Rating: 2/5
Married With Children
Definitely Not.
I like oasis but wouldn't rate this that high but a solid 5.7/10 album
not really feeling it.. just not really a sound that i care about at all. everything about it is so grating and annoying fav tracks: columbia, married with children
Polished but to what end?
Meh.
I remember listening to this album at the time. It was ok, but not great by any means, and a fraction of the album that What’s the Story Morning Glory is. Not great.
I've always thought I'd missed out on Oasis but honestly I just don't really like it. I can't help think that they sound like someone doing an impression of earlier bands but in a fake Manchester accent.
Ough. the rock is a little butt
Massively overrated
Way worse than I remember. Genuinely boring record.
I really just do not see the appeal of this band. Some serviceable if down-the-middle rock songs, but I really don't hear anything groundbreaking here. Also Liam Gallagher has a whiny voice. 2/5
Basically every Britpop group sounds like they’re ripping off The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, but these guys aren’t even trying to pretend like they’re doing something new. Add on top of that the very annoying vocals and corny 90s pop-timism lyrics and it’s easy to say I didn’t like this one. If you want to listen to Oasis, I’d say just listen to the hits, cause there is nothing remarkable here.
I'm leaving this with two stars, though it's more of a 1.5 stars for me. Derivative and deadly dull. The best track is Live Forever. I'll never forgive Oasis for the way they bought lads, lagers, and louts into British indie rock. Legit ruined the whole scene and for what?
there were some songs i liked but honestly almost all Oasis songs just sound like the same chords played over and over again aggressively and a teenage boy yelling as much as he can because he thinks it makes him a better singer
Hey let's just try a bunch of different stuff and we'll eventually put it in our 1 popular song everyone clowns on. Okay maybe a bit harsh this is more raw but fuck I'm bored
Oasis again!!! I'm so happy!!1!!
Terrible start - and doesn’t really improve much. Is the whole thing just noise? Why was this so big? I don’t get it. Sounds like shit - Who mixed it? 🤷♂️
An album that i loved on release but i very quickly jumped from the Oasis wagon and i likely haven’t listened to this since the mid to late 90s. That was largely due to a dislike for the Gallagher’s which has only grown since then. But I thought it’d be interesting to give it another listen so many years later. Of course I’ve heard most of these songs in the intervening years, they’re impossible to avoid but what struck me is just how basic they are lyrically, almost laughably simple, like nursery rhymes for pissheads. Musically I have to admit that they’re hooky but there’s nothing here that’s challenging and most of these songs have been so overplayed it’s like a cloth wrought dry. The two songs that stood out in that respect were _Columbia_ and _Slide Away_ which weren’t singles and so I’ve avoided for a couple of decades.
I'm not a massive oasis fan. I've tried hard to get the thing that everyone else sees, but it just sounds super generic pop music with a manchester accent
I'm not a huge Oasis fan. It's certainly a classic but doesn't really hit for me.
it got old really fast
Trash LMAOOOOO
🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑 (an uneven distribution of 1-4 star songs skewed by skeevy thievery) This score comes down to the context. I come from a Blur family, but I'm not so Jingoistic than I can't enter this with an open mind, and for the first five or so songs, I was having a good time—I'm not sure what's so special about Oasis, since I heard nothing other bands around this time weren't really doing, but they do that thing well and I was enjoying it. Once I got to Super Sonic, the Weezer-y, nineties, whiny guy schtick got to be a little bit insufferable, and I could tell even beneath the rock I live under that MTV rode some of these into the sunset. Even that, though, felt dubiously smarmy when certain harmonies hit, and I'll admit it—I sorta got it in glimmering moments of "Slide Away" and "Live Forever" (or was it "Up in the Sky"?). To me, in isolation, this is Oasis: cloying pop at worst, fiery rock at best. But here's the hitch: Oasis cannot exist in isolation. Ambushed by the opening riff of "Bang a Gong" retitled mega-hit "Cigarettes and Alcohol," I already felt territorial (and don't tell me it's because there's a limited amount of chords in rock and everyone's ripping everyone else off—there's coincidence, there's influence, and there's this, which anyone who's not a bad actor can plainly see), but this was before I read the lawsuit that ensued from "Shakermaker's" plagiarism, which made me feel like a chump for enjoying that song. I can—and not even that begrudgingly—forgive "Shakermaker" because it's clearly tongue-in-cheek parody, but knowing in retrospect that Noel and Liam Gallagher both thought they were the next John Lennon really limits my capacity for grace. Regardless of how hard they rock, or even how competently they can create a decent rock hook, knowing that these pompous blowhards got away with not only their plagiarism but their delusion of grandeur (still lauded by knowing music critics today) stacks me against this album. Two stars because of some fun performances and occasional bursts of talent, no more stars because they didn't create more originality with said talent. 1: Bad | 2: Okay, No Desire to Revisit | 3: Good, Conditionally (OR Inconsistent Mix of Qualities | 4: Great (OR Technically amazing but missing the sauce emotionally) | 5: Amazing
i don't "get" them really. maybe the other album.
Not really a rock kinda person but Live forever wasn't too bad.
The singer is scientifically engineered to annoy me
Like trudging through a swamp for what feels like 2 hours
This was ok album that had songs that I forgot once the next track started playing. Wouldn't mind listening to the songs but definitely wouldn't pick and choose to listen to this. 2/5 Best track? Maybe Supersonic.
Liam Gallagher is an obnoxious boor who can't write a song. Let's take Live Forever Maybe I don't really wanna know How your garden grows 'Cause I just wanna fly Lately, did you ever feel the pain In the morning rain As it soaks you to the bone? Maybe I just wanna fly Wanna live, I don't wanna die Maybe I just wanna breathe Maybe I just don't believe Maybe you're the same as me We see things they'll never see You and I are gonna live forever What a load of absolute twaddle. And he then goes on to sing the same verse/chorus another two times, the lazy git, a tactic he repeats. Noel can knock out a decent tune and they kind of reinvented the indie stadium rock sound after the Cult defined it with love, but can't override the annoyance that I feel everytime I see his stupid self-satisfied, punchable face, or hear his faux-Manc posturing vocals. Sun-sheeee-yine - fuck off!
What a boring album. Look I'm no fan of oasis to begin with. The only song I remember from this listen was live forever and I don't think I'd ever willingly listen to this again. 2
This has really popular songs but I can separate the Gallaghers from their work
Definitely No 1.5/5
Maybe, Definitely, an album. Hard for me to say much more than that. I have never cared much for Oasis, and this one is no outlier in that regard. This was tolerable, but I don't see why I'd revisit it. I feel the need to review it harsher because it's so well-regarded, and I don't like when an album or band is so popular but their output is so milquetoast. 2/5
- their voices are annoying - every song is Wonderwall - not a fan
The 90s popular rock scene was just atrocious. Most formulaic, bland genre until 2010s country. All songs are basically the same so no highlights for this album.
I wasn’t impressed in 1994, I’m not impressed in 2026.
It’s been awhile. They were definitely channeling the Beatles. And I had forgotten how much this album rocks!
- I think this is one of those things where if you didn't listen to it when it came out, you can't really understand the album because future bands incorporated so much of what made it fresh when it was released. - It's not innovative, weird or foundational enough to stand out 32 years after release so it's just kind of ok to a first time listener - halfway through the album I lowered the volume - Cigs & Alcohol is pretty good
Would have been a ten for me in 2005 but not really my vibe.
Not much of a rock guy, but nice voices
60
Never bought into the hype around Oasis. Ordinary sing-along pop rock made for that stadium feel. It's good at that but not my bag at all.
I never jumped on the Oasis train ... and this album has not changed my mind. It's fine, but I'd rather listen to The Verve.
Went in an oasis hater, left an oasis indifferenter 2.5/5
I am teetering between a 2 and a 3, the sounds just aren't doing it for me. I hate saying "it all sounds the same" as a critique since the true critique is "it all sounds the same and I don't care what it sounds like." I could listen to Mac Demarco all day and all his songs sound the same. I'll take Wonderwall and some of their other hits, but I don't think I need an entire Oasis album.
vocals are a bit annoying but i like the instrumentals
Why do people like this band so much? The 90s were truly the nadir of music. Flaccid groups like OASIS were allowed to proliferate despite being LOUSY
I'm gonna be honest, I only listened to a couple songs. Oasis is very popular in Japan, and I already resented them for that, and listening to a bit of this just confirmed for me that their music is very mediocre. When it comes to music, a lot of people in Asia seem to care more about appearances than substance (their pop idol culture is egregious); I just imagine them being like "wow look at these cool white guys with long hair playing cool music," while their brains are turned off. It's not the worst music I've ever heard, but .... yeah
I'm torn between a 2 and a 3, but I think I have to give this one a 2 (I'd probably be willing to do 2.5, lol). A lot of the songs seemed to sound kind of the same - and not all that interesting? Wasn't particularly a fan of Oasis when they first came on the scene, and I guess that's still the case. It's not terrible, just, like I said, (to me) not very interesting.
Just seems kind of ordinary and uninteresting. It's not difficult to listen to particularly (though I do find the snark difficult at times), I just kind of can't be bothered with it. One of the other records sounded like uninteresting acoustic pop, this one sounded like uninteresting late blues rock a bit more
