Reviews (page 10 of 13)
Knowing the hits but not the albums it was fun to dive in. I enjoyed it. Interesting concept of first half traditional rock songs and second half instrumentals. I enjoyed them. Did it blow me away. No. But that’s fine. 3.5
Album is good but not revolutionary. Heroes is good as is Blackout. Would probably not seek out this album to listen to it again.
Haven't listened to Bowie all that much. Lets see what all the fuss is about. Starts out decently, but then just gets weird. His voice sounds like he's half yelling half crying. It's not bad, but how does he have NINE albums on this list? The instrumentals are decent background music. Best song: Beauty and the Beast
I've heard this album before. Fripp's guitar work is amazing. This reminds me of a lot of 80s bands that were influenced by this 1977 album. But like most Bowie albums, it's pretty inconsistent.
The 1970's were a very fruitful period in Bowie's career. Not only did he, in collaboration with famous NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson, solve Fermat's second last theorem and confirm Einstein's conjectures about space-time, he also developed the field of cryptography which would eventually allow him to amass a fortune in Bitcoin. His future assured, Bowie was able to focus his considerable talents in other areas such as developing pinball machines and science fiction writing. In just six weeks he created the epic pinball game Dune, and the equally epic spinoff book under the pseudonym Frank Herbert. This album is not the soundtrack for that book. Instead, reading very carefully between the lines, it tells the tragic tale of his doomed 1974 love affair with an East German bagel baker. Sadly, the Wall came between them and Hans the baker was killed when the escape tunnel he was digging with a spatula collapsed on top of him.
I usually expect a fun, commercial-yet-complex sound from David Bowie but, unlike Low or most of his earlier albums, the commercial part is really lacking here. Bowie and Eno's creativity is possibly unparalleled for its time, and I'm aware that "Heroes" was contextually important for musical contemporaries – but it doesn't hook me in anywhere near as effectively as Ziggy Stardust, Blackstar, Low, Station to Station, or Aladdin Sane (all of which are on this list). Briano Eno's contributions are top-notch here, particularly on the side 2 track V-2 Schneider. The background synths are a nice contrast to the "bloopy" ones (which are less enjoyable), the guitar playing is solid, the drums are more or less a continuation of the proto-80s feel in Low. Based on general consensus from the reviews, it seems like Lodger is a continuation of these trends. I feel that, at this point in his career, Bowie's vocals start to abandon the early/mid-70s quirk and charm that most earlier albums showcased, and that really brings an album like this down – especially for such an iconic rock figure. 3/5 Key tracks: Heroes, Blackout, V-2 Schneider
I always liked Bowie. But I only ever listened to collections, hits, and I had Let's Dance. Otherwise I never listened to earlier albums in full. This one appears quite experimental/ avant guarde for the time. I guess that's no surprise since one of my favorites, Robert Fripp, plays on the 1st half, and Brian Eno dominates the 2nd. There is good solid rock in the 1st half. Heroes itself seems to be more popular than ever. The sounds on the 2nd half appear to blaze a trail for new age music. Some is interesting but most fades into the background as it appears meant to do. The one song reminds me of Andreas Wollenwider (spelling no doubt wrong) and his mellow jazz fusion. I'm sure the trailblazing experimentation of the album lands it on the list. But it just doesn't land consistently for me. 2.6
A whole week without a Bowie album! Thank god this popped up, I don’t know how I was going to make it! There are too many Bowie albums. This one was fine.
Tiene muchas mejores. No encontré la versión apropiada.
Its not bad, but I would say it is unsettling. - 7. Wish the pop/rock songs weren't all in the beginning, because the album gets a little too dark midway through. You don't need 4 ambient songs. Luckily ends with an ambient/pop mixture on the last song "The Secret Life of Arabia".
Just not that good, with the strong title cut standing head and shoulders above the rest which is more dross and drudge than sturm und drang. As so often, the over indulgent Bowie begs his listeners’ indulgence without offering sufficient return. That's especially true of side 2 (one's speaking as an ambient/Eno fan). Whichever editor likes him so much as to include this many Bowie records might need to have a think about the fanboy instincts.
like david bowie, makes some cool music
This is my second David Bowie album in the rotation, and again, I've been disappointed. While it still displays talent, and has some smooth instrumental pieces, it just didn't blow me away like some of his other songs. Favorite Song: "Neukoln"
I am unapologetically fanatical over David Bowie, but I sometimes feel that David Bowie owes me an apology for this album. Of all of the Berlin Trilogy albums, this is the most difficult listen. Low may experiment more, and Lodger may be the more erratic, but Heroes is the album where Bowie is most focused on breaking rules just for the hell of it. And despite the fact the title track is arguably Bowie's most iconic, romanic, and earnest track, the balance of the rest of this album feels deeply pretentious and committed to busting pop music conventions that, it turns out, do serve a needed purpose. Tracks like Joe the Lion and Beauty and the Beast are frustrating, certainly feels like Bowie had the framework of a decent rock song, but decided "hey, what if I tried to make this sound like shit by screwing around with intonation and singing with the worst possible phrasing I can imagine?" Why, David? (We all know why: because you're David Bowie. And that's often more than enough to justify whatever strange decisions he aas making). It would be unnecessarily cynical to overlook the bright spots on this album. The title track speaks for itself. Moss Garden is gorgeous. Sons of the Silent Age is viscerally mysterious. In between those clusters are songs like V-2 Schneider and Blackout, where Bowie seems to have found the rare balance between focus and innovation. I wish there was more of that throughout. 3/5
I really wanted to love this album. I'd built it up in my head as something monumental, something that would shift my perspective, something I could be cool enough for. Turns out, there's not a ton of "there" there, after the brilliant title track. (Even if I do think the single edit is more effective than the longer album cut.) Actually that's not entirely fair... I definitely enjoyed the instrumental set of Sense of Doubt - Moss Garden - Neuköln. (Maybe throw in V-2 Schneider for good measure.) They're not at all what I was expecting and I quite enjoyed the stretch. But then we have to deal with the stuff which sounds like Bowie and Eno trying to look smart, instead of just being smart. I could do without Joe the Lion or Sons of the Silent Age. Beauty and the Beast has a good hook but feels like they doesn't actually want you to like it. Blackout and The Secret Life of Arabia felt accessibly pleasant, but I think that's because they're on ground Bowie tread more successfully elsewhere. Sometimes it's nice to be reminded that you're smart and cool enough without having to have the right album prove it.
Some songs are good. Others just okay.
The author definitely has a thing for David Bowie, this is my SIXTH Bowie album. "Heroes" is iconic and my favorite Bowie tune and it's easily the best song on here. The first half of the album wasn't bad but the second half lost me. Did they run out of songs so they decided to pad the album with forgettable instrumentals? 2.5/5 with Heroes pulling it up to a 3.
it's bowie. iconic, but I don't like all that bowie.
Besides Heroes, I'm not a fan. I prefer glam rock Bowie
Solid album, but didn't like it quite as much as low, the first of the trilogy. The songs weren't as unique to me, while I was engaged through low I didn't get the same from heroes
This is an almost good album. Glad I got to listen to it before I die.
Side one was a good time. Really enjoyed the addition of Fripp. Lyrics are lacking and no true stand outbtrack other than Heroes. Side 2 is a head scratcher. Two decent songs and 3 weird synth noise songs. Every time I get a Bowie album, I get the sense he should have released fewer albums and condensed the great songs onto fewer albums.
This album started off great! First track was a banger, Heroes is a total classic, and I mostly enjoyed the first half of the album. But what the hell with a few of the second half songs. It came back around with the final track, but he really wandered off into a weird, ambient forest after V-2 Schneider in a way that felt totally disconnected from the rest of the album.
Great!
Everyone has that one major artists that they just don't understand the fanfare over, and David Bowie is that artist for me. This album is widely lauded, and I did enjoy it mostly, but it never reached the heights that I expected it to, given it's legacy. I enjoyed the Brian Eno-led production, and found the ambient tracks in the second half to be quite interesting. They were much more in keeping with the supposed German Expressionist inspirations for the album. I feel, with Bowie, that I'm just missing something that his biggest fans aren't. That could change, as insure there will be other albums of his on this list. It may even change if I listen to this album again. Highlights: Beauty and the Beast Sons of th Silent Age Sense of Doubt
Harbinger of musical genres to come
Apparently I know very little about David Bowie because I expected this to be a pop vocal album. And I’m disappointed that it’s not. The back half of this album is way too artsy and ethereal for me. Nice enough to listen to, but not to return to.
This is comparable to "Low" for me. I used to write this album off as the album that had the best title track/single off of any Bowie album and the rest I didn't care for. That being said, there is the expected great variety in styles across the tracks. Moss Garden may be my favorite instrumental piece of his. Heroes is an undoubtable banger. The Secret Life of Arabia is a cool closer. V-2 Scheinder has some amazing saxophones in it. Definitely not near my favorites of his but undoubtable Bowie still delivers a solid listening experience on this one.
Not my favorite Bowie album, but not too bad.
Is this my last Bowie album? Maybe? Finally? I'm scared to check, in case there's more. Oh god, there is more. I'm unwittingly being dragged through his entire discography, aren't I? Anyway, this album has one of the two Bowie songs that I actually like, "Heroes." The rest of it did nothing for me, but Moss Garden was a pleasant listen this morning at 7am. Neuköln reminded me of Kraftwerk which would make a lot of sense given this album was also recorded in Germany in the 70s, but apparently its inspiration came elsewhere. Man, I really thought I had something there.
Heroes is an awesome song, but there's some losers on this album to be honest. 2.5
It was pretty cool. Liked the last couple of songs. Felt like I was on outer space.
Moss garden slaps. Why aren't more people talking about moss garden when they talk about David Bowie. Change the album name to MOSS GARDEN!!!!!!! 3.5 stars.
I wish I could say that I really enjoyed this album, but it didn't make me feel any type of way really. There was too much straight instrumental at the end for my taste, but overall it was an okay listen, if not boring.
Not my favorite era of his career. Title track is solid though, and a few other good moments. The atmospheric stuff is kinda cool.
Disparate uneven offerering with Brian eno being drafted in to fill 5 unfilled minutes. Don’t believe the hype. 3 stars although certain songs deserve more the unevenness brings it down for me.
Whilst containing Bowie's best song - the title track - this is not Bowie's best album. In fact, its not even his best album from the Berlin trilogy of albums, that is 'Low'. In many ways it provides the blueprint for the follow up. An opening side of progressive pop music whilst side 2 drifts more into the experimental. 'Sense of Doubt' is where the atmosphere of the cold war really comes to life and, ok, side 2 is truly cutting edge and brilliant.
It’s Bowie, so extra star for that. But other than the title track I wasn’t overly impressed
One good song.
Heroes is David Bowie's eighth studio album, and the second of his three "Berlin" albums. These were done in collaboration with Brian Eno, and the pair pushed Bowie's avant-garde rock towards Eno's fascination with synthesizers. The title track is one of Bowie's biggest hits. The sound of that song, and much of the rest of the album, are part of the the foundation of 80s pop. The album is uneven, and most of the songs co-written with Eno are the low points.
The production is fantastic on this, and Heroes is one of Bowie’s most impactful and evergreen songs for good reason. Beauty and the Beast is a fun opener as well, but unfortunately there’s not too much more of interest on this album. The more ambient second half is just very forgettable, especially when compared to Eno’s solo work at this time and the back to back Bowie bangers of Station to Station and Low that preceded this
<3 Bowie
Not nearly as good as Low. First side of songs are ok ( Heroes is the standout obvs) . I prefer the more experimental instrumental side. 2.8
I wish I got Bowie. I know he is adored by many, and I like his hits. And all of Ziggy Stardust. But in general, I find him mediocre. Here were are with his 12th studio album, and he hasn't had a lot of hits by this point. This album has one. That's all. I get that it's not all about popularity, but typically high quality work (of the type that Bowie fans think he produces) receives more commercial acclaim than what Bowie has gotten. For the record, I think I actually like the second, more experimental, half. If I were rating this solely on my opinion, it would probably get 2 stars, but people whose music taste I like adore Bowie, so I reckon I'm missing something, and I'll rate it based partially on how much I think it needs to be on the 1001 list. Given that, it moves up to 3 stars.
Pretty good
Farklı duygular oluşturan bir albüm özellikle albümün sonuna doğru şarkıların birçok filmde kullanılabileceğini düşündüm.
3 out of 5. Outside of the title track this is where Bowie's music starts to lose me a little but like a lot of other albums it took me a while to get into it may be something I just haven't found how to appreciate just yet.
I like Bowie but there's too much Bowie in this list.
Definitely different. Experimental and at times odd? Not a lot to sing along to
This is a lesser Bowie. Instrumental is interesting but what I'm here for
Pretty good.
It's fine. Not really special to me.
Heroes is a great tune but a lot of the others fell a bit flat for me. Why does it sound like he's singing from the corner of the next room over? I didn't mind the soundscape ending but it was a bit strange.
The title track is fantastic, of course. The rest of the Bowie tracks is okay, but doesn't really stand out very much. Most of side B is a kind of interesting Eno/Fripp ambient project, not at all what you would expect from a Bowie record. Really strange decision to include this here, reminds me of George Martin's B side to the Beatles' "Yellow Submarine", that I don't ever listen to.
The title track really stands out here, I love the sound and underlying story. But not much else on this album really gets me that excited.
Fine. Still don’t see the Bowie magic. At least this one had a couple more experimental interesting tracks
nice, i prefer low but still good, rly enjoy moss garden
Still Bowie, but far from this best stuff
very solid 3. tempted to bump to 4 bc of the song heroes bc it’s genuinely so good, but one song i’m in love with isn’t enough so 3
An iconic and significant album where experimenting actually fits well. Some more uninteresting moments that don't quite fit but what album doesn't have strengths and weaknesses? Really interesting sounds that must've been completely new at the time though. Highlights: Beauty and the Beast Blackout
FAVO: Heroes, V2-Schneider, Sense of doubt
Two albums in one; the album opens strong with classic 70s Bowie diverse rock, but takes a turn at the half, progressing onward like a soundtrack through some dark spiritual journey or awakening, dragging a 4 down to a 3 for me.
Eh, it's a bit random, no? A formidable slice of culture but as an album, Heroes feels like a rather weak collection of things that haphazardly happened during studio time.
I was never a big Bowie fan before this project, but I have definitely become one after hearing a few so far. So I had never heard of the Berlin trilogy before. It started off great but that ambient second half…not my thing
Honestly I think this is a pretty overrated Bowie album. The title track is pretty great even if I'm a little fatigued by it and there are other good songs too but the instrumentals really make this album lose momentum. It's still a decent album overall but I don't count it among his best.
Normally this would be a straight 5 stars as it's David Bowie, but to every rule there is an exception and this album is it.
Very disappointed in this. Only song I liked was the title track, which saves it from being a 2. Tracks like Dense of Doubt and Moss Garden really slowed it down and felt out of place
Heroes is a good tune. The rest of the album was fine.
I like Bowie but this just didn’t do a lot for me. I’m sure I’m missing something but I just wasn’t massively impressed
First half is the epitome of what inspired the next generation of dad rock (90s and 00s bands going back to their roots), second half is refreshing «rock musician tries going experimental». I don´t dislike this album, but why on earth does everyone talk about Bowie? He was talented, but not that talented.
-Not necessarily my favorite of his work but it’s not too bad, I really like the three ambient tracks toward the end -Favorites are Beauty And The Beast, Sense Of Doubt, and Moss Garden
This gets a 3 based off Moss Garden and Neuköln alone.
awesome vibe but the only track i ever want to hear on this is heroes
Bowie's second album release of 1977, impressive! I'm so used to his rock and pop sound that the second half of this album, mostly ambient new wave music, was quite a surprise. Sense of Doubt was effective and off-putting. On its own this album had no highlights beyond Heroes, but I'm glad it was on the list so I could learn a little more about this artist and his range of work.
I don't mind some Bowie, and the first half was fairly decent, but the back half just kills the vibe. Secrets of Arabia with the big save right at the end of play!
Not sure what this is. Feels so weird. Might like it might not. 3*
I like a lot of the ambient stuff, but of the "regular" songs only 'Heroes' stands out as a song I'd listen to on purpose. Standouts Heroes Sense of Doubt 3/5
angsty memories there!
Started out as "normal" Bowie pop. Ended up as trippy ethereal head music. I enjoyed it. Heroes is a great song. Surprising that was the radio hit given it's over 6min long and radio's infatuation with the 3 minute track.
Most of the songs don’t do it for me but there are some high points forsure.
initial listen: must have fallen asleep halfway through the album but it’s not bad i think? if i had to pinpoint it to something i know, the vibe reminds me of don’t you (forget about me) but that might just be because they’re both older songs lol……. some of the first few songs are quite catchy esp heroes but the second half is mostly instrumentals?? 🧐🧐 interesting choice update: moss garden is pretty tho!! very space-like. overall the album is pretty cool, i’d listen to it again when i’m in the mood!
I might be in the minority here but other than "Heroes," which is a great song!, I just never jived with all of the second half space instrumentals. It felt like two ideas shoved together, like an old Yes album or something (side one is the singles, side two is the space opera).
Great but I don’t really like Bowie the musician.
Interesting musical variety
This album gets carried by Heroes, which is an amazing song. But apart from that one, this one just seems nothing compared to Ziggy. 2.8*
This is as much a Brian Eno album as it is Bowie. Not my favorite work from one of my favorite artists.
Heroes is undoubtedly a masterpiece of a song. The album, not so much. I prefer Ziggy and Aladdin, personally.
Sense of Doubt giving John Carpenter horror vibes Heroes reminds me of Moulin Rouge, whose cover is maybe more familiar than this classic. Very high concept, especially the final few tracks.
Not my favorite Bowie album. I prefer his older stuff.
I enjoyed it, just not as much as I hoped I would, I love Bowie so this was kind of a disappointing listen for me. highlights: Heroes, Beauty and the Beast, Sons of the Silent Age, The Secret Life of Arabia.
I didn't like this as much as young Americans, but still solid album.
Interesting album. There's some cool arrangements here between Brian Eno and Robert Fripp, and there is a whole ambient side of the album that's kind of far out. There are some solid songs, but I didn't particularly dig the lack of structure on the vocal side and across the album. It's an amusing album, but I also feel there is this deeper Bowie mythology around his career and eras that is overrated (unless, of course, you are a huge fan). ***
The risk and ambition of this is admirable but the result is not enthralling for me as album shifts to ambient orientalism.
Whoa, I am still pretty early into this project and already three Bowie albums. I imagine I will have heard everything he ever recorded by the time it all ends. As far as this one goes, "Heroes" is rhe only song I knew, and, is a terrific song. The rest of the album seems more lime just an experiment. I think the album would grow on me if/hen I have the chance to listen again. It is a good album and I am glad it was included, especially given the players. The instrumentals are intriguing and very listenable, when in the right mood...
First side is up and down. Heroes, Beauty and the Beast and Joe the Lion are fun. Second side is meh at best.
The most enjoyable Bowie album so far. At some points I almost forgot I was listening to anything at all
2 Bowie albums in now. This is very different from Young Americans. Few good songs and then quite epic instrumentals. Surely not his best work but does leave me wanting to hear more. 3.5 stars
As someone who has had recent fairs with Bowie, I really never saw much about this album apart from the title track and the ambient tracks. Great stuff however.
Interesting instrumentals. Kinda spooky at times. Love the experimental orchestrations. Different from what I’d expect.
Boring pop. A couple of the last songs completely changed the sound compared to the rest - those where more interesting, but nothing I would go back to.
Sort of zoned out after Heroes until there was a bit of singing in the last song.
Not Bowie’s best, but still an interesting effort with some good songs. The album starts with 3 strong tunes, particularly album opener and Heroes. This album sees Bowie experimenting more, along with collaborator Brian Eno, to make something a bit more experimental and electronically influenced. The main problem here is the lack of cohesiveness. Side A is typical Bowie affair of unique and danceable pop tracks. Side B is pretty much an ambient album. Don’t get me wrong, there are some really nice soundscapes there…but having Beauty and the Beat/Heroes on the same album as sense of Doubt/Moss Garden just seems like a strange fit. I’m never sure when I want to listen to this album because of those disparate feels; and thus I usually only listen to the front or back end depending on what I’m looking for.
Correcto.
Three stars because it's Bowie. Minus two because instrumentals.
2nd half very cool and instrumental, also perks of being a wallflower movie of my youthhhh
I surprisingly didn't love this album. I listened to it twice and still didn't really get it. I'll give it 3 but really 2.5
Just not my favorite Bowie album
Liked Moss Garden as reminder of time in Japan. V Schneider my favorite. Surprised so much instrumental as I usually love Bowie’s sultry voice. Wanted to enjoy Neuköln for the German tie-in, but didn’t 😔
Not sure what it is, I'm just not the biggest Bowie fan. I don't hate his music by any means, but I also don't love it either. A very solid 3 for me.
I'm a fan of Bowie, but I don't enjoy the albums as much as I enjoy the hits. My favorite Bowie are the poppy hits, so maybe it's just not for me to go deep into. Heroes was the only track on this one that stood out to me.
Didn't think too much of this one until the instrumental songs near the end
I of course know the title track, but beyond that this album was surprising, and often not in a good way. It’s a little too icy and weird for me, and Bowie stretches his voice further than he should to mixed effect. The instrumentals also didn’t really land for me. All that said, I get that it’s one of those albums you probably need to invest some time into to really “get,” and I appreciate just how odd and experimental it is. Best song: Heroes
5/23/24. Wasn’t crazy about the ambient songs toward the end, but will always enjoy Bowie.
this is my eighth david bowie album i've heard as part of this project, but what surprises me most is how different all his albums are. heroes is mostly in an electronic, artsy space. i was reminded of brian eno's ambience reputation during the instrumental parts, and lo and behold, eno was credited on a number of songs on heroes! their collaboration makes sense, especially since they both were part of beginnings of glam rock, though separate from one another.
Seeing as this is another album within the "Berlin Trilogy", and another one that I had not heard before, I couldn't help but compare it to "Low". Well, in my opinion, this album is just not as good as "Low". But it's still so good. Again, this album and project reminds me of just how far-reaching David Bowie's career was. Each album included here was influential for one reason or another, and each one sounds unique and formed in its own bubble. It's true artistry. I was actually weirdly surprised by the final three tracks on the album: "Moss Garden", which then segued into "Neukolon", which segued into "The Secret Life of Arabia". They has very clear Asian influences, but there's a sense of electronic and ambient Bowie-isms dancing under the surface of these songs. They're felt very "old meets new". I was caught off guard by how intriguing this trio of songs was.
I liked learning about Bowie's years in Berlin. Seemed really good for him after so much madness. Ironic since Berlin wasn't exactly chill at the time. The story of him playing the song "Heroes" live in Berlin and being able to hear the crowd on the other side singing those lyrics is very moving. I appreciate the experimental nature of the album, but Heroes is the only song I ever come back to.
It's very middle-of-the-road Bowie
If I was rating just Heroes this would be 5 stars. But the rest of the album is mediocre by Bowie standards.
First Bowie album I’ve listened to, I don’t know if this was a great introduction into his work. Definitely more experimental pop, kind of spacey and ethereal, but in terms of the music nothing really caught my ear. C teir.
“Heroes” has been a favorite song of mine for some years now. I’ve connected with it on a personal and emotional level a few different times. I find it to be a powerful song that sometimes goes forgotten when Bowie’s greatest songs are discussed. So I was excited to hear the album it originated from. The rest of this album is…ok. The first one songs are kind of a hot mess, especially when considering the drastic tonal change from those to “Heroes.” “Sons of the Silent Age” and “Blackout” are more tonally consistent with “Heroes,” but still don’t quite match the emotional highs of the title track. What follows is an instrumental suite that takes up the entirety of the album’s second side (save for the final track). These are good, and even reminded me of Pink Floyd instrumentals in some places, reminiscent of tracks from “Wish You Were Here” or “Animals” (albums I would love to be assigned…). These are beautifully done (namely “Sense of Doubt” and “Moss Garden”), but they aren’t what I come to a Bowie album for. I come for him, his voice, his poetry. Perhaps that’s just my misconception of him as being a singer-songwriter but not someone who plays instruments on his own records. (The joke was on me when I checked the personnel listings for this album; Bowie plays 5 instruments in addition to singing) Still, it wasn’t what I was looking for, so I wasn’t as invested. That doesn’t detract from the overall quality of these pieces, though. The way I look at this, there’s three great songs on this album (see below), two really ok ones, one bad one (the final track), and some lovely instrumentals. That adds up to 3 stars for me, which sucks because after the fifth song I was ready to give it 4. Standout tracks: “Heroes,” “Sons of the Silent Age,” “Blackout”
I have a love/tolerate relationship with this album: love side one, tolerate side two. If I owned this on vinyl I would never flip it. Beauty and the Beast and John the Lion lead up to my favorite song on the album and for the artist, Heroes. Unfortunately, side 2 sounds a lot like Radiohead was attempting to make a movie soundtrack (#moonshapedpool) and I kind of want to walk at the theater ASide:Classic! B-side: pass!
Wow! Besides Heroes this seems like a mid album. Maybe I need to listen again at the right time. 🤷♂️ I’m interested in what you will say. I always write my reviews before I read yours.
Heroes!
Beauty and the Beast 3.6 Joe the Lion 3.7 Heroes 4 Sons of the Silent Age 3.5 Blackout 3.3 V-2 Schneider 3.6 Sense of Doubt 3.4 Moss Garden 3.2 Neukoln 3.2 The Secret Life of Arabia 3.4 Score: 3.49
Fine, I guess? I liked "Heroes." Better than the one with Fame on it.
Aside from the title track, I'm pretty sure I haven't heard the rest of this album's songs, and it's an interesting journey. I'm not sure I enjoyed the B-side as much as, say, the parts of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" where the songs blended into each other, but it's still fun to hear the Bowie/Eno/Fripp collaboration across the entire album. (Brian Eno is everywhere, btw.) I also found it really helpful to read the Wikipedia entry for this album and how it was created, as I would never have guessed that the vocals and lyrics were almost tacked on at the end (except apparently with "Sons of the Silent Age"), and that everything was largely recorded in the first take. It's really impressive, given how layered and seemingly cohesive the songs, and most of the album, are. I'm also glad to have read that this album came after extensive collaboration between Bowie and Iggy Pop, as we (or really I) left David Bowie's timeline with "Ziggy Stardust"'s Iggy Pop fascination and emulation. Also very cool to read about the legacy and influence of the album, especially the later Philip Glass adaptations of "Low" and "Heroes" into symphonies. I'm almost tempted to give this 4 stars, but it feels like it's not quite *that* good of an album, at least for me.
A few very good songs, but it isn't his best album.
Good but not their best
Dragged towards the end
1. Beauty and the best 7/10 2.) Joe the Lion 4/10 3.) Heroes 9/10- Probably my favorite track. Reminds me of the mid 2000 movies of a kid living that suburban life with no worries. 4.) Sons of Silent Age 6/10. Great jazzy tune infused with electronic melodies but was not fan of the singing/talking 5.)Black Out 4/10. such great guitar riffs but really did not like david bowie singing. should of left off as a instrumental 6.)V-2 9/10. great use of david bowies voice with guitar riffs. this is what i envision as a new david bowie listener. 7.)Neukoln 8/10. Jazz trumps all! synths go hard too
Definitely not my favorite Bowie.
Not crazy bout it. Heroes the best song ever tho
I was somewhat grateful that the second half was mostly instrumental tracks because I had to evaluate less songs. There were some decent songs but most were not hitting for me. Sounds interesting but not my thing.
Some bangers but I really didn’t enjoy end
I probably need to immerse mayself a bit more in the Berlin Trilogy to fully appreciate them, because at the moment it isn't quite up there for me.
This was serviceable Bowie... until the album took a strange left turn on the back half. Overall, relatively enjoyable.
Pretty good pre-80s Bowie album. The back half really took a weird turn with the somber instrumentals, but overall pretty enjoyable.
Very good, I was not expecting the more ambient tracks to be there but I think they were my favorite part.
The 8th of 9 Bowie albums another one that is just fine. I live in Berlin so I know how liked this album is here but it's a whole lot of meh. Nothing mind blowing and kinda dull at points. Bowie is fine but I don't think he needed so many albums.
bis auf den Überhit "Heroes" doch eher mittelprächtig
I know I've heard this before. I could never hang with my brother from another mother without some Bowie entering the chat. But this time around, this leaves me cold. The Eno-ish experimentation on the back half of the album does little for me. The title track, of course, is impeccable. Unexpected banger: Joe the Lion.
I've already had Low and rated it 3 stars in the past so it's time to have a day of reckoning about David Bowie in Berlin. It wasn't all that great... Don't get me wrong, the first half is stupendous but, like Low, the second half falls apart as Brian Eno gets a little too involved and it's all new agey ambient instrumentals all over again. If you took the first half of Low and the first half of this and smooshed them together it would be a top 5 all time album. Bowie in Berlin was more than the sum of its parts.
While I’m always happy to see TTWD on this list, I have to say Heroes is among my least favorite of his, and probably the weakest link in the Berlin trilogy. What saves this from being more or less forgettable is the title track, which is rightfully one of the most legendary songs of all time.
Great song. Groovy album for a first time listen
more experimental with Fripp and Eno than straightforward rock ones. not my favorite Bowie album. It kind of loses me towards the end
Songs I live and sings a I just don't get.
Decent album, not much I didn’t like, but also not much that impressed me. 3/5
ehhh just okay
Side 1 is great. Side 2 is filler
I don't really care for Bowie. This was decent though. 3/5
Usual Bowie output. one banger, a bunch of filler, and some weirdness tacked on. I still don't get the hype.
ну норм
Not the best album but it’s bowie
The production on this is stellar, notably with the second half instrumental tracks, but when it comes to the more traditional Bowie-led vocal tracks, they’re oftentimes pretty forgettable. However, “Beauty and the Beast” is awesome and “Heroes” is one of the greatest songs ever. It’s the stuff like “Joe the Lion” or the final track that leave some individuality to be desired.
Want to rate it a 2, but it's Bowie so I can't. The title track alone compensates for the boringness of the rest of the album to bring it up to a 3.
In Philly they call this album “Hoagies”
Oddly catchy tunes. ODDLY.
3.4
Less lyrical than expected
Good album. Not best. But, has good songs.
Not my favorite Bowie but mostly instrumentals and it was interesting. I loved all the instrumental tracks but the lyrical tracks just didnt do it for me secret life of arabia was okay. Nuelkoln was one of my favorites as was sense of doubt. You just get these feelings from these songs and wow. sons of a silent age and heroes are the only lyric songs that will stick with me. This is a 7/10 but closer to a 6 for me so. I am glad I heard it
This album is good for the title track and not much else. Overlong soundscapes more than anything, and I don't enjoy the crooning vocals. Not awful, but nothing I'd revisit. Fav track: Heroes
Good
“Heros” und ein paar Experimente. Das ist die Quintessenz dieses Albums. “Jo the Lion” & “The Secret of Arabia” sind ok. Die restlichen Stücke der in Betlin aufgenommen Platte sind sehr gewöhnungsbedürftig.
Heroes is of the greatest songs ever written but the rest of the album is kinda meh.
this was really fun and beautiful and i love texture in music. obviously i know Heroes which actually was not a standout on the album….there’s far more interesting stuff in here. i liked side A way more i’m not in an ambient mood i WILL Listen again
It's cool, just not the best for the office
Боуи конечно фигура значимая, но при всём моём к нему уважении только 3
not my favorite but its gud
Great title track, but some guff too.
Good stuff from a strange man
A load of absolute guff, and one of the greatest tracks of all time
Just not near the best Bowie
Starts strong but the second half is lacklustre atmospheric instrumentals that sounds dated
sehr esoterisch
Great title track. The B-side is instantly forgettable. Maybe it was special when I came out.
David Bowie is a legend and there’s a lot of his music that I really enjoy and think stands the test of time, like Heroes from this album. But I just didn’t feel much of a draw from this album as a whole. I thought there were only a couple good songs and even though they were gorgeous, the instrumental songs at the end were too much of a surprise. I’m stuck between a two and a three on this one, but I think I’ll give it a three because I’ll come back to it at some point and I bet I’ll appreciate it more the second time around.
I like heroes. By heroes, I mean the song. By the song, I mean the Wallflowers cover of the song. By the Wallflowers cover of the song, I mean the movie The Replacement. What I'm saying is I like the movie The Replacement.
Started off good, but then there's that weird boring instrumental part. Not my cup of tea.
Yep decent, usually really don't like the b-sides on bowie albums but these were pretty good
Heroes is one of the greatest songs ever The rest is fine
Standouts: Heroes, V-2 Schneider. Interesting b-side. Bowie brings out the middle school contrarian in me and this was perhaps a bit eye opening but not enough to change my mind.
We could be hero’s is on here
Didn’t contain any of my favorite David Bowie songs but it was a fine listen.
Fine song. Album is a good listen, but the song is the reason we’re here.
Last few songs kind of lost me. Can't imagine how many drugs were ingested during the production of this album.
The album personally wasn't for me. It was a great listen regardless! Never had listened to it before so it was a new experience.
Despite Buoy being one of my favorite artists, this is not one I listen to very often. I have to be in a certain mood/zone to appreciate all the instrumental tracks on the second half.
This album is solid enough, though not as incredible as some believe based solely on the reputation of the title track. And let's get it out of the way: "Heroes", the song, is an unbelievable piece of work. But as for the album...a mixed bag, to say the least. The second side holds several atmospheric instrumentals that, while perhaps "art", aren't so enjoyable as music. And the remaining tracks range from good to meh. As much as I adore Bowie, I really don't know if this album should be on the list.
Some great songs but not his best by far
6.5/10 Drugs, lots of drugs Bowie is at his most “sounds like someone doing an impression of Bowie” here All of the music is impeccable here, such a quality tight group Much prefer the electronic second half Best: V-2 Schneider
I really have been disappointed with Bowie, this is the 2nd or 3rd album that I've listened to and I really havent enjoyed them much. Too many long instrumental sections/ tracks. He has such a great voice I dont want to listen to a long repetitive section to get to it. Title track was the standout on the album. I will listen again and see if my opinion changes, I was working on my car when listening and I wonder if that was not the attentive listening situation needed to enjoy the album.
Heroes is really the best song in this album.
Yay ! 3,5
This one is so close to hitting that next level, but it just can't quite match my favorite Bowie albums
Fine, I think I love Bowie as a person more than his music but a good listen still
I enjoyed the album. Never been a huge Bowie fan but thought it was a very listenable album. Liked its construction.
David Bowie is an enigma to me. I know that he was a groundbreaking and very talented musician responsible for some of the best recordings in the last 60 years. There is an odd album of his I like in full and an odd track on other albums but in the main I just don’t get him. I have tried to listen constructively numerous times. In particular to his “Berlin Trilogy” of which this is one and which many say was his finest hour But they are littered with tracks which sound to me disjointed and without melody. On this particular album, “Heroes” stands out from the rest which at times degenerates into tuneless meanderings. The instrumental tracks on side 2 seem meaningless to me. Neither dance or ambient they seem to serve no useful purpose on this album and to me instantly forgettable. Just why David Bowie does this to me I don’t know as I do know he has heavily influenced musicians who I do like. There is a Bowie album in this list which I know I will rate at 5 but unfortunately this to me is worth only 3 and it only gets that because of the influence this album has had on others but not me.
Une fin étrange à l'album, mais pas inintéressant du tout dans sa globalité. A réécouter.
I know David Bowie songs, not David Bowie albums so I was excited to see this come up. But … I’m underwhelmed. Heroes is fantastic, naturally, and I also enjoyed Sense of Doubt, but that was about it.
Sense of doubt er eins og the beast úr Sicario ... Moss Garden er flott stemning. Heroes er klassík auðvitað
Not my favorite Bowie album though Heroes is a fantastic song. And the worst Bowie album is better than most artists' best.
Heroes // Sons of the Silent Age // 3.5/5
Kind of mid in my opinion, half of the album is just sounds Top tracks: Heroes
Si
Why does Bowie always flub the last few songs?
some fun ambient stuff, didn't love the singing stuff
Didn’t really get into this. Bit too out there for me. Shame, I was very excited about listening to it 3.0
I know very little about Bowie. He has an interesting sound for the late 70s. It sounds very much like 80s music. Over all it is OK album to me. If I am in the mood for 80s I would listen again. 3/5
Pretty interesting album. Only ever listened to Ziggy Stardust before so didn’t know what to expect. The title track remains a banger, the rest of the album was good without blowing me away. The Brian Eno second half was really moody, though feels disjointed from the first half of the album.
I like Bowie, soooo
3.5 side a was alright with Heroes being a great song. Side B was much more enjoyable. The soundscapes were good v-2 Schneider being the highlight
Heroes is a great song, the rest went in one ear then out the other.
Nothing special but heroes is a bop
B Beauty And The Beast 3 Joe The Lion 3 Heroes 4 Sons Of The Silent Age 5 Blackout 3 V-2 Schneider 3 Sense Of Doubt 3 Moss Garden 3 Neuköln 3 The Secret Life Of Arabia 4 Massively overrated POS.
Listened to black star instead cus i was more interested and it (blackstar) was very interesting and experimental so quite cool
Not as good as his others, elevated by the title single.
so strange that it turns ambient halfway through but i kind of loved it
For me, this is the worst of the late-70s era Bowie albums. It's Dave, so obviously it's still got a lot to like and is still better than most other things, but it feels a tiny bit pastiche-y at times, which I think when Bowie goes full croon, he can do. Clearly, the title track is a masterpiece, and I think might be in the running for the best male vocal performance on record. It's remarkable that it still remains potent, despite being used on every BBC Olympics montage since ancient Greek times.
Another day, another Bowie album. This record was great. As a whole album, it doesn't make sense. It was a lot more experimental than I thought it was going to be. The title track Heroes really did not set up the album in what I thought it's sound or tone would be. Which isn't a bad thing. But the album did come off random. Sense of Doubt, Moss Garden, and Neukoln are the three songs that really don't sound like they belong on this record. They're not bad songs, but it sounds like a 3 track EP was randomly put in this record. It definitely threw my groove off. The final song, The Secret Life of Arabia brought me back with what the first half of the album felt like. I thought I'd like this record more than I did. David Bowie is still one of the best artists to grace this earth. Can't wait for more.
Rock, Pop, 1977 -> 3
A bit too experimental for me. Some great tracks, but overall not as strong as some of his other works
Great musicianship.
Some decent songs, one famous one then a weird instrumental portion at the end of album
Okay, not my favorite. Preferred the songs with vocals.
Great music, one time listening didn't feel enough for giving a rating, I'll give it 3 stars though
I had never listened to this album in full until today. In fact, I don't think I've ever listened to a complete Bowie album except for his greatest hits album "Changes" and his final album "Black Star." I know his hits and that's about it. With the introduction of new music, I like to take time to learn about the album, songs, and the artist. What I found interesting regarding this album is the way the songs were written. Only one song was completely written before recording began and for the rest (non instrumental songs) the lyrics were written as Bowie stepped to the mic. That's pretty awesome. I also learned that this is the second album of his three Berlin albums, and I'll need to listen to the other 2 to see how they flow together. In regards to the songs on this album, the only one I was familiar with was the title track, "Heroes." The other songs on side one don't really do it for me. I don't know where I stand on Bowie's catalog. I love the hits, but I don't know if I'll ever find myself wanting to listen to his full albums. As with all music, we all have different tastes. I understand Bowie's place in music history and as I've stated, I genuinely love a lot of Bowie songs. Listening to this album, while it might not tick all the boxes I'm looking for, I can see why it's seen as one of Bowie's best. 3.5 out of 5 (but I can't seem to figure out how to do a half star)
Not my vibe but I did like the song sense of doubt
Not super into Bowie, but I do like some of his songs and Heroes is probably one of my favorites. It's been covered many times over.
Track 1: fun parts in this one. Track 2: I like the guitar part. Track 3: okay title track song not a lot stood out. Track 4: intro is cool with the sax build up. Track 5: I like the electronic synth in this it’s funny to hear it go crazy. Track 6: not anything major. Track 7: fun instrumental. I like that it sounds like a movie score ish and is eerie with the bass. Track 8: good transitions and I like the occasional string that comes in. Track 9: I kinda like how it has a same theme as track 7 and keeps the instrumentals going with a wild sax. Track 10: the build up for this track wasn’t worth it. Overall: 7.1/10 nothing to wild about this but I really liked the three instrumental tracks.
I like the first half/side a lot. The instrumental tracks break the flow of the album. They aren’t bad and I might not skip them but I’d never seek them out and I’ve already forgotten them except there was a pretty cool part a little over a minute into Neukoln.
Man, it is really weird. Liked the previous two from this list better
Title track is one of my favorites but the rest not so much - kind of tuneless and searching for a hook in an operatic style. Some cool sounds and production with the synths and stuff, but not put to much effect. The ambient Eno tracks at the end are great though. Best of Berlin Bowie would be a welcome release as in between the hits there's lots of mediocre stuff clogging up these mid to late 70s albums.
I like. Heroes am besten, Rest ok. 3,7
not bad, just don't like bowie that much i don't think, the instrumental tracks towards the end were my favorites 3/5
I don't hate listening to David Bowie because the songs are terrible, I hate listening to him because the songs are almost good. Most of these tracks have funky basslines I groove along to despite myself, but they are like...almost funky? And then Bowie comes in with his tin can voice and it ruins everything for me. I didn't hate this thaaat much.
I like Heroes, and I like a lot of Bowie, but most of this album is not for me.
Starts off really strong, but goes downhill and gets weird quickly
i just dont rly like bowie ig
Enjoyed the instrumental stuff
A 5 star song stuck in the middle of a 2 star album, I'd give it 2.5 but will round it up. Really quite poor. But by this stage of his career he could fart into a microphone and people like the hipsters giving 5 below this would go mad for it.
It's kinda good. Groovy, interesting, and the instrumentation is what I tend to like. It's also kinda generic and there's noise in here that I'm not loving. The Secret Life of Arabia is a nice groovy song. Overall it's been a decent album. A few bad parts but mostly enjoyable, classic rock with a little bit of an edge.
I know of Bowie from his radio hits and reputation. I'm not sure if my expectations were too high going into this, but I found this album pretty underwhelming. Ok so I slept on it and came back to listen again fresh. It's better, but I wouldn't call it great. The instrumental tracks, while interesting, sound like they belong on a different album.
Strong 3
An album of mostly strange noises, but not in an offensive way. “Heroes” is a near perfect song.
Known before: Artist/some songs Standouts: 3. Heroes Rating: 5.5
Known Before: Artist/One Song Standouts: 3. Heroes 6.0
Not my favorite Bowie, but a fun album to explore
Sounds good, not my cuppa tea tho, but i love the intro and the dongs with little to no singing
Има 1-2 мн силни песни, ама другото не ме грабна толкова
Better than the first Bowie album I listened to. But just not a big Bowie fan. 3/5
Groovy
2/10, 20%
I liked a few of the songs, some were too artsy
"Heroes" is by far the best track, the rest isn't amazing.
ok but a bit too wild / high-pitched for my taste. heroes is certainly great but the entire album doesn't fully convince me.
Apart from Heroes, didn't love it. :(
Nice album that loses its way at the end
Good.
Heroes is a good song
Love the energy and have deep respect for Bowie, but if I’m honest his music always makes me feel like you kinda had to be there and I wasn’t and I guess still am not.
Not much of a Bowie fan but there is no denying he has a great voice.
I like the title track, "Heroes." The rest of the album wasn't my cup of tea
I can't say I really took to this album, other than the great title track, it is a bit off the wall and not to my taste
Never loved David Bowie’s full albums, always finding them about 1/4 genius, and 3/4 filler (with exceptions being Blackstar and Low and most of Scary Monsters). Upon listening again, I found all but Sons of the Silent Age (which was just fine, nothing special) excellent traditional Bowie songs. The experimental songs on the back half just felt out of place. Not bad, relatively interesting, but felt much less integrated than the second half of Low, which works as an stunning and vital companion to the first half. This set of songs just felt disjointed. Finished strong with The Secret Life of Arabia though. Favorite track: Heroes. Least favorite track: Sons of the Silent Age.
Heroe’s is that song that gets overplayed during NHL playoff broadcasts every year so maybe I’m just sick of that song. As for the rest of the album, not his best… Beauty and the Beast sucks, Miss Garden and Neukoln and weird and droning but I actually kinda like it and the Secret Life of Arabia is actually pretty rad. This is a weird one from Bowie and not all good but not bad either 3 stars
Some hits. Some nots. Not a huge Bowie fan, so what do I know?
Maybe apt that the next song I played after listening to this album was Taylor Swift’s “Anti-hero” The only song I really liked was “Heroes”
Always good
Some nice tunes on here, Heroes being the standout for me
I know it's a compilation, but I really liked Changesbowie far better.
I feel like a bit of a traitor for this rating, but it was just okay for me. Fav song: Heroes
Another great offering from Bowie, it’s no Aladdin Sane or Hunky Dory but still worth a listen. 3.5 stars.
this was okay, but felt short. very soulful but a little self-congratulatory.
Definite not my favorite Bowie album
I see the point, just not my cup of tea
OK.
I'm not a huge David Bowie fan, but I recognize his talent and what he did for music and art throughout his career. This was a little too melancholy for me in some places, none of the tracks really stood out, but they all had his distinct style.
It's more of a 3.5
Not really my tastes honestly
10/6/2023 - second side mainly instrumental
Interesting album, definitely shows the time around it was made. There's a saxophone in the Neukoln song that sounds just like a sax on a pink floyd track...like just like it. Some kind of experimental sounding stuff, a little disco-y on some songs. Nothing really makes me go wow, Heroes is good. V-2 Schneider is pretty fun...
Some songs sound modern as hell but some lyrics seem a little dated. Could do without the extremely long piano and horn duet midway through. Definitely some enjoyable parts , some songs worth a relisten. The soundscape part of the album seriously drags it down though. Starts off well enough but ends annoyingly
nice
Not the worst Bowie album I've heard, but genuinely I don't get the (excuse the pun) hero worship. Heroes is a decent track. The album is just OK.
I like David Bowie... but this album is all over the place. Maybe a bit too eccentric for my liking, overall. Obviously Heroes is a great song though! I guess I'm a bigger fan of David Bowie's hits and not his full albums.
Besides the Eno shit this is pretty good.
meh
Going into this only knowing one song from the album (Heroes) I was a little disappointed by the rest of the song. I was working a bit on my computer so maybe need to give it another focused listen. Split between three and four stars for this, might sadly have to do three but Heroes carries the album.
moins bien que ziggy hein
Heroes the song is amazing, the balance of side 1 is much better than I expected. Side 2 consists of massage style instrumentals. Appreciate and reapect the artistry and musicianship that is Bowie, for whatever reason his deep tracks have never connected with me. Over all it was much better than I expected.
It was just ok
I love David Bowie, but not this record. That said, even lesser Bowie is still better than most.
Pre-listening thoughts: BOWIE!!! Looking forward to this album immensely even though some have told me that David Bowie is better to listen to just jumping from song to song rather than diving into his full projects. I literally only know the title track from this album so I'm very excited to know more of Bowie's work. (also sorry for this but the cover looks like that pic of bat boy from that tabloid article SORRY SORRY) Post/during listening thoughts: This is pretty much exactly what I expected from knowing some of Bowie's other work - I really enjoy it. Very rock but also sort of campy pop? Synth driven but it's so cohesive and striking (the front half is). Heroes (the song) never gets old. It's cinematic and larger than life. The soundscapes are... interesting. They're sort of odd on an album like this. It's like somebody threw a wrench in the energy that was accumulating. Like I forgot what album I was listening to. They sound like the music my mom would play as a yoga teacher with random brass accents thrown in. God the end of Neukoln is... bad. Like really bad. Redemption definitely strikes with The Secret Life of Arabia. So so weird to have those two instrumental tracks in the middle of this album bc now the energy is back but the album is over?! Overall 6/10. Would def revisit the front half! Top Tracks: Beauty and the Beast, Heroes (duh sorry but it's so good), The Secret Life of Arabia Least favs: Moss Garden, Neukoln
Songs considered the best on the album. These songs appear on some of the best of David Bowie lists I found online. Heroes, Joe the Lion, V-2 Schneider, Beauty and the Beast.
David Bowie is a chameleon and this album is all over the place. I liked the Eno-esque ambient stuff at the end of this album and Heroes is timeless, but the majority of this was kinda, meh. Maybe the point of DB, is that he's never a one-size-fits-all... everyone likes some of him, nobody likes all of him.
I’m ready to conclude: David Bowie was not a musical genius. He pushed boundaries musically. He pushed boundaries theatrically. He was a big, unique personality. I’m somewhat confused by the multiple instrumental tracks in a row. I like his music, but not consistently enough.
