Reviews (page 8 of 12)

I expected more from this given the White Stripes hits and the latest Jack White album. It’s a mixed bag of songs, most of which are just fine. Prefer the more garage rock sound.

Found this one a bit boring but I'm not really a Jack White fan. I guess as a minimalistic indie experiment it's fine, the singles are decent, and nothing really offended me here. Just not really my cup of tea.

Not sure I like this as much as I used to

I enjoy listening to every White Stripes album because they always do such interesting things in a stripped back way. But I do think this is a weaker album.

Standard run of the mill music. Enjoyable mostly for the songs I know

When guitarists make piano albums

Good White Stripes album. Is really diverse and fun to listen to. Uses many different sound styles and as usual they are very experimental with the sound

A bit disappointed, went into the album with higher hopes

Like Jack White and his approach to guitar. This one didn’t quite thrill me as much as others.

I think it's good but not great. Based of this alone I don't understand all the hype about The White Stripes, but from what I saw on Spotify this doesn't look to be their most popular album.

I have been pretty distracted at work so I didn't get to fully digest it, but for the most part I have enjoyed it. Unique sound, easy to like.

I wouldn’t mind listening to this again.

Not my favorite album, but I can appreciate the art of it. Well recorded, and it seems like the product is what they were going for, just not my vibe.

I remember lifting weights to this album back in the day because it was supposed to be good. I didn’t like it back then, but it’s fine. The problem is the hype. Without the hype it’s good.

Decent album

This album felt like it had massive potential, but just never quite reached the level that I thought it might get to. "White Orchid" is the biggest song on here, and while it's fine it doesn't quite hit that apex that some of The White Stripes other guitar-driven songs hit. At other times it does a fairly interesting job being a bit more outside-the-box (e.g., a xylophone? on "The Nurse" and "Forever...", a weird little stomp & clap riff on "The Ghost", a blues-rock song near the end). It's consistently good, but rarely great (and I actually like the departure from the standard guitar-heavy fare). I added a bunch of the songs to my list, but still finished the album with a bit of a lackluster feeling. I haven't listened to much of The White Stripes beyond their big songs. I feel like they've been huge on like the indie-rock music festival scene for years, but for some reason they've never really drawn me in. I imagine I'll see them at least once more on this list, I feel like this album was a bit of a borderline inclusion. I feel like I should like them better than I do, so maybe it'll grow on me. Favorite song: Forever For Her (Is Over For Me) Other: White Orchid, The Nurse, My Doorbell, Little Ghost, White Moon, I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet) 1/21/25

I enjoyed the album, definitely felt experimental. The songs with heavier drums/guitar like Blue Orchid were more enjoyable, since some the singing or other instruments would get chaotic feelings. Certainly feels like something that being in a different head space might make it more enjoyable. (6/10)

Anyone ever seen Jack White and the squeaky voiced one from Police Academy in the same room?

A solid but not stand out rock album. Don’t see myself revisiting this.

-Blue Orchid: Super high energy, Strong energetic Vocals, geiler fetter gitarren sound (layered?) -The Nurse: close vocals, tension rising, - My Doorbell: uplifting vibes, open drums, geiles piano, bluesy feeling - Forever for her: rhythm matching vocals and downbeats, makes slow feeling, weird bells sounds - little ghost: country up tempo vibes - the denial twist: blues classic rock vibes, - white moon: ballad, nice vocals, piano and shakers set a nice vibe, "musical" vibes - Instinct blues: slow blues, nice riff/licks intro, - passive manipulation: beatle like?, - take take take: nice melody in vocals, nice switch up, grooves gets u moving, - As ugly as it seems: acoustic intro, nice guitarin pre hook, nice room acoustic - Red rain: bottle neck guitar riff, nice back and forth between the energy levels, vocal screams a bit over the top, - im lonely: roomy vocals, nice blues piano solo

15/01/25 The album is okay. I know how talented as musicians the Stripes are, but it did get a bit boring.

I really like Jack White and the style of music all of his projects have, but this is one of my least favorite albums of his discography purely due to being lighter and sappier than everything else. They do end up producing a good job at it, but if I am in the mood for music like this, I would choose a different artist who specializes in it. When I listen to The White Stripes, I want to have fun!

Never been a big fan of The White Stripes, but I could listen to this album again.

Respect to the white stripes for not succumbing to the worst trends of mid-2000s mainstream rock. The songs are all good, but there are too few great songs to bump this up to a 4 for me.

It's a White Stripes album. Bluesy, folksy, garagesy. Simple and repetitive, but easy on the ears. 3.5.

Good but not as good as Elephant. 3.5.

Now on my third White Stripes album, I realise I'm just a fan of the singles... or most of the singles. This is put together well enough, in their kind of ramshackle, rough around the edges way. It also has enough skill. It's just that there's lots of filler and there's not nearly enough that stands out, or differentiates itself from the rest. And, sadly, a lot of this is actually boring. Disappointing. I thought the last track was WAY better than the rest of the album, until I realised Spotify had segued into another album of theirs. 2.5 rounded up.

I either loved or hated the songs

Nice listen, but nothing that sucked me in

Never have been a white stripes type of fella.

Bluesy, varied

Plain. Nothing of great interest. Still listenable however.

I feel this is an odd choice if it's the only one. Elephant or White Blood Cells are superior IMHO. Decent.

Some highlights but most of the albulm doesn’t really work for me Favorite song: The Nurse Least Favorite Song: Take, Take, Take

Not my cup of tea

Singles were good

strong start then gets monotonous

👍 "The Denial Twist", "My Doorbell"

some of these songs make my brain itch

Milestone log 3: Day 300! It's insane to think that I've consistently listened to an album a say for almost a year now. As such, I have regrets that I have mis-rated albums, or that my rating scheme is far too lenient. Like 50% of my ratings are 4 stars... that's not good, right? As for this album, it is a far cry from the material that makes the white stripes a great band. Not here for the soppy shit.

Started off very strong but at a certain point kind of blended in with the most mediocre moments of their career.

Man they really get boring quickly, not a good band for albums

This was okay. I usually like the white stripes and Jack White, but this was okay

Not bad at all. Nothing really special.

It’s alright. Some modern rock classics and some tracks I will never listen to again

My second White Stripes album on this list. I guess you could argue enough of a departure to their earlier sound to include this one. I find the piano a welcome addition to the semi abrasive guitar. While a more interesting and diverse album than the other one, I still wouldn't call it great.

Is it good? Yes Do I like it ? No

alright, interesting mix of sounds.

I'm a big fan of Jack White with a guitar in his hand. This album though - it's good but lacks a killer song.

I've only ever heard Seven Nation Army before, and I do like it. But for some reason I never thought I'd like any other White Stripes songs. Based off of nothing really. And totally unfounded, because this album does have some enjoyable stuff. It's a total mixed bag. Little Ghost and White Moon are great. The Nurse is terrible. The rest of the album bounces around ok to good. Best song: Little Ghost

They have better albums

Fav: Blue Orchid Least Fav: The Nurse

Big album for color songs. I lean towards liking Jack White's other projects more than the White Stripes, but the songwriting is simple and very good.

mostly serviceable

I’m admittedly not a huge White Stripes fan. Growing up, my mom was, so I have an appreciation for some of their tracks that I grew up with, but this album doesn’t have many of those tracks. Elephant is much better in my opinion. That being said, Blue Orchid is a banger.

Feels dated. Excellent but no desire to listen to it anymore

No my favorite white stripes, but still decent.

Its OK, I guess I like it. Some songs were really good but nothing stood out to me.

This used to be one of my favourite albums so I was excited when it came up. I didn't like it that much almost two decades later. Interesting how tastes change.

Not my favorite White Stripes album. Got this when released and perhaps a letdown from previous albums. A few good songs but seems like a lot of filler?

Sad to say I'm happy this one isn't on the list; the two Stripes albums we've got are great, and this one just didn't age well for me. It's still White Stripes, so we're looking at a bad pizza situation: there's still great flavor here. But the toy pianos? The marimba? Take Take Take??? Some impulses must be reined in.

Didn't get to listen in full but sounded good

Not for me.

I am not a fan of The White Stripes. I've tried to get into them. I do have respect for Jack White, but this music is just too basic and I don't like his voice. I'm actually upset that I have to listen to a full album of theirs again, but this is the task we have been given... If I had to pick a favorite, it would be As Ugly As I Seem. It isn't a terrible album, but no higher than a 3 for me.

It's good, but not their best. mid to high threes.

It’s great in parts but dull in others.

Quickly becoming a Jack White/White Stripes fan. I do not think this album was a s good as Blunderbuss, I very much enjoyed my listens. There quite a bit of sound variety within each album I've listened, even song to song. Meg's drumming stands out, but man I love how they put that piano to use too. Jack is just a solid musician, his voice and unique musical style brings this all together. While a very good album, some songs that stood out to me include Blue Orchid, My Doorbell, Forever For Her, The Denial, As Ugly as I Seem and I'm Lonely. Side note, this album was released on Prince's 47th birthday! Pretty solid album. He does have better stuff out there. He could have cut out a couple songs, but pretty good overall. 3.5

3.5 I’ve always considered The White Stripes to be more of a garage rock kind of band, so this album came to me as kind of a surprise. It’s by far the most diverse offering I’ve heard from the group, but I found that to be both kind of a benefit and detriment to the overall experience. It’s definitely interesting and fun, but it also kind of feels all over the place and inconsistent - a lot of the stuff here feels more like proof of concepts than it does fully fleshed out songs. Still, I had a mostly fun time with this album, with My Doorbell, Take, Take, Take, and Blue Orchid being my favorites (shoutout to Guitar Hero 5). I’m not really sure what was up with the whole Rita Hayworth thing though - if you focus in on the lyrics, she’s mentioned on like half the songs here. With that being the case, it almost feels like they were going for some sort of concept album, but if so, it’s so loosely tied together that the idea falls apart pretty quickly. Though, I will say, this sent me down a little bit of a Rita Hayworth deep dive, where I learned the actress was actually born Margarita Carmen Cansino, of Spanish heritage. I guess that name was determined to be too “exotic” for a film career though, so she adopted Rita Hayworth to give off more of a homegrown American image - gotta love the entertainment industry. At least it led to a great novella and film. I digress, I don’t really feel like this album is the definitive White Stripes experience, nor do I even really think this contains any of their all-time best songs, but I do think it’s a fun, different addition to their catalogue for sure. While I’m not the biggest fan of the band, this at least proved to me the duo isn’t quite as one-note as I thought.

Although it's good it won't compel me to come back often.

The stark cut from the first track into The Nurse, which is by far the best song on here, is the highlight for me. I had to check to make sure it wasn’t my phone going off. Everything else is par for the White Stripes course. After enough time with this list I can offer my respect to the Whites as musicians. Not often my mood, but they’re both stellar

En handfull hyggliga låtar.

Twas cool but it just kinda rolled by

I’d argue that White Blood Cells is the better White Stripes album but admittedly, that’s the only record of theirs I’d only listened to before now so perhaps it’s not fair of me to come to that decision. That being said, this was still a fairly solid album. It still sounded distinctly White Stripes and, whilst there were a couple of tracks I’d probably skip next time round, I wouldn’t be mad if I had to listen to this again

I don’t really feel very strongly about this one way or the other.

I enjoyed this much more than I expected. More nuanced then the heavy metal I assumed i would hear.

Interesting record with a properly lo-fi production vibe. I'm all for DIY-sounding stuff, but this does feel pretty damn crusty. The guitar tone in Blue Orchid is screaming out for some top-end to my old ears. Definitely a grower record. Favourite tracks: The Nurse, Little Ghost, The Denial Twist.

3.5, good album will listen again. Another solid one by Jack White

the difference between "disastrous change to the formula that carried the band through four albums" and "needed shakeup to the sound that shows a band evolving" is usually a pretty fine line, but for some reason, on Get Behind Me Satan, that line is blurred. i think part of that is simply because there isn't really a HUGE shakeup -- the songs are still the same bluesy, dramatic guitar work + steady rhythms, but with a few extra elements added in in the production studio. a piano hit here, a folk number there, but it's still the same old group with just a few constraints let up. it doesn't feel like a radical left turn; rather, i feel like it's the first album of a somewhat promising band that will become great if they simply turn up their amp and ditch the piano songs. that band would probably be on the level of the White Stripes' first few albums if they did that. one aside: Little Ghost is a cute song and arguably the best on the album. contact me directly to duel me for saying so.

Seems good. Not really my taste though.

Not their best. It's between a 3 and a 4.

Too much marimba for my taste

I liked elephant more, and this seems like a step down on every front. Still some very good songs though, like The Nurse. First half was stronger.

Standard white stripes

not my favourite but not that bad 3.5/5

This was okay. I didn't hate it, nor particularly like it. I don't understand why there was all the fascination with them at the time.

I didn't realise that the white stripes were a married and then divorced couple! Very interesting to read about, the album itself was ok, no complaints but nothing that I really noticed that strongly either

good album, but not great. Had a few little nuggets in there but nothing that had me overly impressed.

Good album, great songs quite various.

Maybe the 3rd best white stripes album? To me this is the transition album from bluesy guitar Jack White to more piano driven Jack White. It feels like he’s been bored of playing guitar basically since elephant came out. This is still a good album though, just not as good as earlier White Stripes. 3.4

It was ok - not the biggest fan of their staccato and sometimes jarring rhythms.

Hmm, kind of a mixed bag. I found a few tracks a little irritating, so I don’t think I can go higher than a 3 this time. Overall, not bad at all, though; I think I’m in a bit of a slump and finding it hard to enjoy most albums lately.

I’m confused so is he talking to Satan or is he Satan

I gave Elephant three stars, mainly because of an inexplicable dislike for Mr White, or perhaps others' obsession with him. Probably should be a four. This is more of the same, so not bad, but fewer standouts - I definitely can't see me returning to it again.

More rock and roll than I was expecting. Didn’t hate the album, but nothing really stood out

Dime a dozen white stripes formula muzak. Fave Tracks: Blue Orchid 2.9/5

I'm not sure why this album makes all the lists. Icky Thump and Elephant are superior, more cohesive and less repetitive.

Not a bad album by any means but starts off with a classic, ripping White Stripes banger that made me feel like I was in for something much better than I got. Pretty significantly dies down as early as track 2, but there’s some good riffs and clean drums sprinkled throughout that make this a good enough listen. They, of course, have far better albums than this!

An interesting sound with some songs I enjoy but also not really something I often want to listen to.

generally like this band but never liked this album that much !!

I only really knew the guitar/drums garage rock stuff from the White Stripes so this album was a bit of revelation with a wider range of instruments on offer, adding piano, marimba and mandolin to the mix. There are also some variations in style too, and I particularly enjoyed the country feel on Little Ghost and the blues rock of Instinct Blue. Nice to hear Meg singing too. True confession - I always thought they were siblings but turns out they’re married!

This album sounds more blues than garage (compared to what they have done before). It has pretty solid songs (great drumming, good melodies) but also some fillers that make the album a bit too long to be really enjoyable.

I liked My Doorbell, but nothing else stood out as either good or unpleasant

Solid. Simpsons: Yes

It's alright

Don't get the big deal with the White Stripes. Mid level rock that any high school garage band plays. Meh.

The pounding drums start to give me a headache. Has aged a lot since high school. Feels like only a few songs are needed to convey the "sound" they're going for. Any more than that is a bit grating. Had to move on about halfway through.

Good album? Yes. Deserves a place on the 1001 albums? Not so sure. Yes, it is Jack White and the White Stripes. Beyond that, does it make me think, "Yes, most definitely this deserves a place here."? No. The argument that Jack is playing more piano, and less electric guitar should not be catalyst for being put on a must listen to list. Seems like there is something that is missing that would put it in that arena. There are albums that are not included on this list and removal of this album would allow at least one more album worth the time and investment. Still a good album in it's own right, and I have no regrets listening to it.

Mostly that soft variant of '00s rock that I'm not a fan of. But the parts where they unleashed their punkiest sounds slap hard.

3.1 stars rounded down

Identifiable but not special

So many albums in this project group around the "7 out of 10" hump. I expected the same here, and I typically round down, but to be honest, I think this is just plain ole 6 out of 10. No rounding needed. This album is an example that the list is too long -- we don't need a list of 1001. (For that matter, 500 would probably be pushing it a little.)

Liked it. Never listened to it before.

170/1001

This was okay. I guess this album being present on this list means I can expect at least another 3 albums by The White Stripes? Seems like too much. Maybe I'm wrong. Definitely important in that early 2000s radio rock sound, and as far as radio rock I enjoy them, but that's generally where I'm okay with them staying - on the radio, not in my personal listening.

Pretty solid.

My Doorbell is a great track - cool vibe ... had me pretending to be a rockstar, singing along to it, haha. Take, Take, Take another one that got me interested. I actually rather enjoyed this album - will revisit.

A bit overrated to be honest

Couple of really weird ones one here

Not as happening as the earlier ones

If this album existed in a vacuum, sure, I'm into it -- I particularly like the piano/Americana tracks (vs electric guitar/weird stuff). But knowing what I know about how weird Jack White is and given the terrible show of his I went to...meh.

My second White Stripes album within a month. This appears to be new entry on list. Bought this CD recently cheap in charity shop following my new found interest in White Stripes. Nice use of all sorts on unusual instruments within the songs make this album different. Love Doorbell Ring song which was worth in itself the small amount I paid for full CD. 3/5 16/8/24

I like this album. It's refreshing that they explore a broader range of instruments. Maracas—why not? It doesn't take long before they are thrashing the drums again and pounding on the piano. That said, it doesn't keep my attention enough to be a go-to album.

The white stripes add some different instruments this time out but the same methodology is deployed. Minimal. Expressive. A little wobbly.

Yeah this was a great vibe! Forget about White Stripes. But they do some solid music. I'm not a big fan or would listen regularly, but I totally appreciate what they are about

I didn't love it. Some albums that mix genres and sounds pull together a coherent whole, this one didn't for me. Liked a lot of the tracks, but not the whole effect.

I think this is better than the other white stripes album on the list, perhaps not as good as the jack white solo album, but that does feel like too many jack white albums on a list like this Doorbell and the closer are the top picks High 3 baby

Robust, charming and eclectic. Fully utilizes the dynamic influences of Jack White with razor sharp precesion. Floats somewhere between old blues album and new era blues rock with subtle nods to Americana and country western and swing.

It’s a decent enough album, containing some nice musical diversions from the usual White Stripes oeuvre and Jack White's best ever riffage on Blue Orchid. But is it a must-hear that deserves its place on this list? Nope (seems like it's since been removed anyway). Plus, the fact they had the gall to not only put My Doorbell and The Denial Twist (basically the same song) on the same album, but also release them both as singles mere months apart, has always irked me.

Love the white stripes but some of this isn’t very good 3.3

Theme of the album felt a bit scattered, but enjoyed over half of the songs in the list. Production felt light which agreed with the tone, and many songs were reminiscent of a modern stones or mccartney.

it's a perfectly okay album that is deeply annoying at times 2.5/5 - 3/5

Blue Orchid only good song. Not a fan of the rest. Not for me.

Stand out tracks: - Blue Orchid - My Doorbell - As ugly as I seem Score: 8/10

Decent but not as good as White Blood Cells or Elephant

That was fine. Definitely had some weirder tracks than I expected. Album cover: B- Very corny

This album feels like a collection of short ditties

Good album with a few undeniable classics. But doesn't reach the highs of their earlier work.

I liked a few tracks on this, but this album is not the strongest in their arsonal. 2.5/5

An obvious change in style and production from the band’s previous efforts. And while I enjoyed the less gritty approach and interesting use of more varied instruments. it just didn’t quite grab me as much.

definitely not their best album. mostly consists of boring acoustic blues pieces. it’s fuel and garage energy that’s the key reason for loving the band, but they’re almost completely absent here nevertheless blue orchid is a banger

I like White Stripes. Would have to listen again to get into a lot of it

Liked it, but maybe not as much as some of their other albums. I like the ones with more energy and distortion a bit more

An interesting choice that has made me question how many albums I’ve actually signed up for So this was the final album in the original 2006 book of 1001 Albums… and was one of the few 2005 records to be included in the list. In the subsequent editions, this album has been removed as other more impactful albums from later years have taken its spot. I’ve had albums from the 2020s in here so assumed I was listening through everything from the very latest edition, but now think it might be a combination of all of them, which brings the total album count up to something like 1080. Anyway… This is pretty good but far from White Stripes’ best. We’ve had White Blood Cells and Elephant already and they are far stronger albums, and I would personally take De Stijl and Icky Thump over this - hell, Jack White’s third solo album Boarding House Reach should really be on here as well Blue Orchid is a fantastic opener, The Nurse is eerie and affecting with a stunning use of marimba, and My Doorbell is one of their catchiest and most fun songs. The album tails off a bit after that though and while there are still highlights like The Denial Twist and Take Take Take, it’s mainly a bit underwhelming in the grand scheme of their incredibly consistent track record. The move from their garage rock roots to a more acoustic and varied sound is really interesting and the overall atmosphere of the record is great - it’s just a shame the songs on the whole aren’t up to their usual standard

Soft 2000s rock. Varies a lot in catchiness in my opinion. Some head nodding songs, and some really boring onces. Includes hit song Blue Orchid as the opening track.

3.5 Not the best of my favorite White Stripes album, but there’s four or five great songs

I prefer when they are more blues. But what do I know, I've never been a big fan, just acquainted with their stuff.

Nice and rootsy. I enjoyed it.

There are some catchy and good rock songs on this album with good songwriting and musicianship. However, my problem - I already had this with another White Stripes album too - that it doesn't sound like an album, rather than a bunch of songs thrown together. Perhaps because it tries out many different styles and doesn't feel coherent enough. The singing wasn't my favorite at times, and it was a bit too bluesy here and there. Overall, a good albums with some flaws.

Get Behind Me Satan is the fifth studio album by The White Stripes, originally released in 2005. For their fifth studio effort, Jack White trades in his heavy electric guitar for an acoustic guitar, mandolin, and... marimbas? This seems to be a fairly big change in musical direction for the band. Out is the hard-hitting garage and in is more soft arrangements. It works for the most part. Some of the songs tend to meander. It's also missing that White Stripes energy. I mean, change is good for a band. This change wasn't exactly bad, but we had become so accustomed to the White Stripes' signature sound that this just doesn't hit quite the same.

There's some things that are really inspired here but at the end of the day it remains just riff rock. I honestly do like the White Stripes, but they're really nothing but a mediocre band that filled a niche of actual human music in a time that synth and heavy production was taking over the industry. There are better bands both in the past and contemporaries. That said, Nurses was a jam that I loved. Instantly joined a few playlists for me. Nothing else had quite that spark for me.

average 3/5

Solid album. It's typical White Stripes with punchy guitar and drums with some blues vibes. It isn't too groundbreaking and drags a little bit, but It's still solid music. ***

From one era of garage rock to another. I found White Blood Cells enjoyable, and there was clearly potential for something more to be realized. On the other hand, Elephant shook me to my core and rattled my bones in the best way possible. Honestly still one of the coolest rock albums of the 2000s. And I think people are afraid to say this, so I’ll just go out and say it myself. Jack White is kind of a genius. But, often with that genius comes change. Change is good for bands, of course. Name one band who did the same thing their entire career and actually made it out in one piece. But change is best in small doses. Get Behind Me Satan is sort of a difficult album to take about. Because it still feels like it has the identity of a White Stripes project. Blue Orchid starts things off very strong. But it is a deceiving opening track. Because from that point on, this becomes something else entirely. The Nurse is pretty much immediately indicative of that. The band begins to sound much less like the pioneer of the garage rock revival era that they were, and more a product of the mid-2000s era of popular rock music. Never did I think I would hear a song from them that had a marimba in it. But there it is, only two songs in. The best part about this more alternative piano rock sound is that Jack is able to properly flex his skills as a songwriter. There was no doubt in my mind that he could write hard hitting and powerful guitar parts. But he wasn’t much else beyond that. Turns out he is also a very competent piano player. I’m also a fan of the production on this album. Some might call it messy, but I see nothing wrong with it. Somehow, the drums, and the sparing moments of distorted guitar, actually sound heavier than before. Those kicks are thumping. I will also not tolerate any Meg White slander around me. She’s awesome. I can totally understand why this is considered the weakest link of their catalog. It’s a good time, but lacking the same substance that made previous records both a good time and flat out well made pieces of work. Rating: 5/10

It's decent but my least favorite white stripes album next to icky thump.

Just ok

Лучшая песня - The Nurse.

An odd album that jumps through a lot of different genres. There were some songs on here I liked but probably not enough to listen to the whole thing again.

Might listen again

The point where the Stripes started to overstay their welcome, but it's tough following Elephant. Blue Orchid is really the only highlight here. The rest is a bit bland. Weird that this album is rated almost a half point higher than a lot of other stuff that is similarly off-kilter.

I’m familiar with the white stripes but I’ll admit I never listened to a full album. Blue Orchid is fun and pulsating. I enjoyed the songs mostly but not as many stand outs for me on this. 3.5

I thought these guys did car ad music? I apologise White Stripes, I was not familiar with your game. This is one of those albums where I can see the vision but it isn't really what I'm looking for. Favourite track: Forever for her (is over for me)

Weird but pretty catchy

Very theatric No 7 nation army :/ Drags in the middle

Get behind me white stripes.

Not their best work. Some good tunes but overall it feels a bit scrappy and undercooked.

Enjoyable

I expected the album to be like the opening track, but that was almost the opposite of reality. Nice but not as good as I hoped.

I mean it's fine. Expected more and didn't really like it very much

A below average White Stripes album is still a good album.

Yes - marmite band - I do like this album but there are still some filler songs on it

Not as good as Elephant

Did not like Jack White’s singing. Instrumentation was pretty good. First song was great.

The weird thing about the White Stripes is that they work better when they lean into the garage aesthetic, and this one always sounded like it was trying too hard to get another Seven Nation Army out there. It's still okay! But after listening to it again for the first time in a long time, I still only remember the singles.

Needed more drums less jack white

Okay!! The marimba being used on so many tracks is a bit interesting, as well as the other instrumentation and arrangement choices separating this from their other albums. But no hits 💁 (Blue Orchid doesn’t count)

I can appreciate the new direction taken here by the White Stripes, largely swapping out guitar and in piano (and riffs for more chords) and losing some of punky intensity for perhaps a more mature sound. At the same time, that is why it’s among my less preferred WS albums. There’s still plenty of great songs (blue orchid, my doorbell, little ghost, denial twist) but the album doesn’t hook me as strongly as White Blood Cells or Elephant and I don’t revisit with much frequency.

My biggest issue with this album is that it kind of melds together as it goes on, which is a shame as it is enjoyable to listen to and has good songs. I don't know if I would put this album on again from start to finish but I would definitely listen to songs from the album. Musically, they are very talented and that shows throughout the album. I would give this a 3.5 if half stars were allowed.

Some good songs, some meh

Probably their least essential album, but it does allow them to play around with new sounds and ideas. For many other bands, this would actually probably be their creative peak, where for The White Stripes it’s just an enjoyable footnote.

This was fine. Not their best, not their worst, some cool stuff on there.

listened on 23/09/25 whilst looking for jobs. least enjoyable white stripes album but still had a couple of enjoyable songs (e.g. blue orchid, my doorbell).

Didn’t really listen to it… I like garage rock, or whatever you want to call it, but couldn’t get into this album…

Probably my least favorite White Stripes albums.

Not sure if the listening notes is where i'm suposed to put the review so I'm just putting this here just in case. Anyways. First Album!! Haven't found anywhere else where the review is so I'm just going to do a short one here for now. This album was pretty mid honestly some decent blues rock songs that I liked but most of it was rather lackluster.

It's an ok album. I've never really got the love the White Stripes gets. They're fine, some good songs, but a lot of stuff I just don't feel impressed by

Huh, another White Stripes. I do like them, but this one was just fine. Not upset I had to listen to it, but not a favorite.

As a recovering White Stripes fan, I remember when this came out. And I remember being disappointed. It’s fine, and there’s one or two four star songs on here, but this is the start of Jack White’s decline. I didn’t like the next album much, either. I wouldn’t put this one on this list, but wouldn’t argue with putting any of their previous albums on there.

While this album isn't in the style of music I am used to from The White Stripes, I still found the album somewhat enjoyable. There are a few songs that stood out to me. I'd consider this a high 3/5.

Very different from their previous release and has a lot of variety. There's an odd phenomenon with the White Stripes where I enjoy their albums during the 1001 but never want to randomly put one on.

had probably heard it before, but hear a lot of the songs off of it often. i do like them, and its a decent album, just not my fave

Meg White doing Meg White things. \m/

It has moments and then it doesnt. The weakest most inessential white stripes. Prob 2.5

Seven Nation Army stans rise up

It's an okay album. The lack of bass in White Stripes music has always left me wanting. My Doorbell is a good track, but overall I found this album to be average. 3/5.

3. Bit bland but somewhat imaginative for a Stripes album.

This has a few gems, but overall a forgettable album. I liked their previous stuff better.

Good album.

Generally quite cheerful melodies, coupled with quirky lyrics. 'Blue Orchid' was a cool song, but other than that I didn't find much to my taste. Not as strong as 'The White Elephant' album we had a few months ago, but quite innovative still, which they should get cred for. Weak 3.

I always forget about this album as I think it's overshadowed by its previous album "Elephant" and its follow-up "Icky Thump". While I think the other mentioned albums are better this is still a decent album. "Blue Orchid" is probably my favourite song with a great riff. "My doorbell" is also a decent song but the rest are kind of forgettable. Listening to the whole album I discovered the surprisingly chill "As Ugly As I Seem" which was nice. "Little Ghost" is a good song but the live version from "Under Great White Nothern Lights" is so, so much better.

Day118 - i think jack white is really talented and makes cool music

nice "passive manipulation" was like woah...and then it ended so soon literally 36 seconds so that was like woaHx2 that "I’m Lonely (But I Ain’t That Lonely Yet)" is a crazy ass song bruh...JSHDFJDFHJ last two songs are crazy too. bruh. *looks at title of the album again* riiiight......

Look y'all, I don't know how to admit to the world that I don't really get The White Stripes. They have some songs that I like, and I can't say that I dislike their music, but every time I listen to them, I just don't understand why everyone has been telling me how great they are. That's not their fault, but it's also not mine, and I hope that this is the last of their albums on this list, and I'm sorry 3/5

Outdated.. seems very of its time.

I thought this album was pretty bland overall. I wasn't very impressed, and I've definitely heard better from both artists on their own.

It’s okay, but not really my style

Meh. Jack White > Meg White, just sayin'.

Some great singles and would revisit..

Piano stabs guitar to death

I hope there are other White stripes albums on this list because I think this is my least favorite of all of their albums. It’s not bad. It’s just that all the other ones are so much better, in my opinion.

Not their best but still great

decent record. i really like doorbell and denial twist, most of the rest is filler to me.

I diverge from the crowd when it comes to WS. Nothing they've ever done has knocked my socks off. It's really good, straightforward rock and I appreciate the stylization. Jack White is a super important person in terms of American music.

Good album, don’t think it’s on a par with elephant, but still different enough to be considered for the list.

Probably my least favorite album from a band that I usually love. I get the impulse to experiment and show you can do more than just bash and crash, but piano-based indie-country-blues (or whatever you call this album's sound) is not the best use of these two's talents. There's still several good songs here, but the whole product is messy and not particularly cohesive: almost feels like a collection of B-sides? Best song: Blue Orchid

I don’t like this one as much as Elephant, but I still enjoyed it. The instrumentation on this is more diverse than prior records from them including lots of piano and even some marimba. Favorite songs were Blue Orchid, My Doorbell, The Denial Twist, and Take, Take, Take.

This the third White Stripes album. It was very similar to others. A couple of well known songs. No need to revisit. The dial did not move much. I will round up.

feels like middle school

I love Jack’s guttural songwriting, blues based riffing, and overall punk aesthetic. Amazingly creative to be sure. Meg’s drumming? Eh, not much of a fan. I get the same punk, “I don’t know how to play my instrument but it ain’t gonna stop me since I have something to say” vibe, but it just leaves me wondering how these songs would go off with a more accomplished backbeat holding the song down. Points for going for it, but yeah…

They were having fun! I’ll have to listen again to absorb it.

Legitimately good album but not what I was hoping for. A bit Samey. Still rather good

Mix of styles. Feels like an experimentation of sorts. 3.5

Blue orchid is the clear standout. Some of the songs that are super stripped down and don’t have the rock feel are not my fav. Overall enjoyed listening!

first track was amazing, the rest of the songs struggled to keep the same standard in my opinion, wasn’t a bad listen, few good songs

It’s the White Stripes, a band that I want to like more than I actually do. The gritty guitars and drums mixed with Jack’s nasally snarl is fun but gets a little samey eventually. It’s cool but but while there are some sweet grooves, it’s not particularly pleasant to listen to after a 5 or so songs.

- the music sounds so classic but wasn’t made too long ago it’s very interesting - good variety of sounds on here - 3.5

- Blue Orchid is a great opener - Variety of sounds, liked some but not all - Fantastic closer

I wanted to like this but it kind of fell flat for me. I like the weird moments and JWs take on the blues. The guitars sounds and the overall sound of the record is pretty cool. The tambourine groove on doorbell and denial were my fav parts. Megs voice is a bummer.

I wanted this to be so much better than it was.

Good album but a little slick for my tastes when it comes to the white stripes

It’s ok

Disco-Metal kannte ich noch nicht … Wirklich abwechslungsreich.

Started strong—good energy; I really liked the drum work. Found my attention wandering for the last half.

TBH I haven't done a ton of The White Stripes; this is a first run through of this particular album. Opens with their distinctly stripped-down sound lead by a quintessential Jack White guitar riff. Despite the "minimal" composition, the mixing is very maximal, pushing for a completely blown-out sound in the drums. Blue Orchid is just riffing along when the carpet is completely pulled into some island-infused xylophone on The Nurse; weird to say the least. Take, Take, Take stands out to me. Feels a bit like a Cage the Elephant song, but I feel like there is a catchiness to it that is hard not to get sucked into. This run through Red Rain is very solid White Stripes. I will say that of the White Stripes albums I have listened to, this is not among my favorites. That said, there is an undeniable talent and energy that came out of their unique union and there are plenty of glimpses of what made them so special here. I find this to be a soft 3 as nothing is outright offensive, but it fails to be truly stimulating. Not to mention, I feel like many of the quirky elements throughout were cheap attempts to be "interesting" rather than actually worthwhile experiments.

Great album name. My Doorbell was fun. Everything else was just some alternative rock to me.

I'm not as familiar with this album as other White Stripes, but excited nonetheless because Jack White fuckin rocks. Blue Orchid gets me hype every time. Such a great opener. Love the juxtaposition of the peaceful xylophone mixed in with the heaviness of the guitar and drums on the Nurse. I like My Doorbell but it gets so repetitive I'm ready for it to end when it does. Always rare to hear a Meg White lead vocal song. Take Take Take has one random part where the vocals go from left to right and back. Was pretty crazy I liked it. This album flows well and sounds great, but doesn't do so much as the other White Stripes albums we've had. High 3.

Blue Orchid was great, everything else less so. Bit boring overall.

Didn't hear them before. Not really good, not so bad

Not bad - I saw them At the Houston Free Press Summer Fest and enjoyed the show.

It aight - 6/10

Not bad sounding, there were some songs that I liked. For an album called Get Behind Me Satan I was not expecting something so laid back

I did not enjoy listening to this. it wasn't bad but like I felt the same ab this as silence. like I can brush my teeth and put my hair up and walk down the stairs and make a cream cheese and bread sandwich(pathetic breakfast but tbh it tastes not so bad and food is food) in silence and it'd be fine but instead I listened to this album while doing all that and its was fine. didn't add anything to my life, and ig not adding anything kind of a negative bc I could listen to something else that would be making my mundane morning taste more enjoyable. I guess 5/10

5/10 - His voice sounded kind of whiny. I did not hate any pieces and I only sort of liked As Ugly as I seem. Although the Nurse was interesting since it sounded like a marimba mixed with random rock accents.

I was locked in on super auto pets listening to this, but I think it was pretty good. 8/10

Many of these songs have real potential to be quite good, but most never go anywhere. A lot go on far too long or get annoying after a few measures.

With the White Stripes, you always hear songs that could have been on earlier albums. That’s what makes them so good. If you like one album, you like them all. This isn’t their best album. If you haven’t listened to The White Stripes before, start at the first album and work your way in. Choice cut: My Doorbell

A little surprised this is on the list as I rate their first three albums all higher. The importance of the White Stripes might be undersold and may have been lost by this album. The simplicity of the band hid the talent and focused on the song writing. I sure hope their earlier albums are on this list.

A solid album from a solid band.

Like a sad little floppy fish, not really my thing (but the album art is amazing and they have 1 or 2 bangers). Maybe its just the feeling this makes in me, like a ping of anxiety.

Good album but not the best work by The White Stripes by a long shot

It is an ok album. A couple of songs are very good.

White stripes are good. Respect the music

Pretty ok

That was all over the place.

Another album I listened a lot back in my youth. Jack White is a national treasure, and Meg White is well, she was there. Hearing this today, it's aged reasonably well, it's a weird album, but far from too weird. But The White Stripes have for sure made some better music than this album. It's enjoyable though! Standout tracks: Blue Orchid, My Doorbell, Little Ghost, I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet) 6,5 out of 10

Fuller sound, like the tunes less than White Blood Cells

For Her (Is Over For Me)'. 7/10 Highlights: Blue Orchid My Doorbell Forever For Her (Is Over For Me)

Hun?! My Doorbell is een uitzondering. 7/10 Highlights My Doorbell! Take, take, take

A quiet album but it felt like rock for some reason. Really good album with a large sélection. Whole thing and not a single un enjoyable song. 3.7/5 Favorite: the denial twist Worst: none

Not sure why this one is here but most likely to listen again of the ones so far

Solid rock album

Some good songs but it didn't flow well

A solid album. I think I like this more than most white stripes I've heard. While I enjoyed this, I don't think it's something I would put on without prompting or for a specific reason (like the 1001 Albums project :) ). It's certainly not music to relax to. It's a band I'd love to see live, it just requires a level of activity and attention that listening on the stereo can't provide. And for that, 3 stars.

An okay album. Nothing really great, but nothing that bad. 3/5 Probably won’t listen again

I don't think I would have previously defined this as the 'Jack White Piano album,' but when listening back again it certainly takes the center stage on most songs. Shows maturity compared to some of the White Stripes previous albums in both sound and lyrical content.3.5/5

I vibe partially 💯

An interesting departure from previous albums. This has an endearing, ramshackle sound that lends itself to the style of music. Kind of like a loose gathering late at night. A very enjoyable album once you stop expecting it to be your typical White Stripes album.

First song - A bit of an odd into? - Very good beat - the guys voice is pretty good too Second song - The calm intro is surprising - Still love the vibe though - Lyrics are cool Third song -LOVE THE VIBE -Lyrics are a bop -Meaning is amazing -The instruments go so well with his voice Fourth song -Good vibes -almost Hozier core -Like it :) Fifth song -Love the vibe again -Melody is amazing and the voices fit so nicely -Cute lyrics Sixth song -Damn this playlist is just a vibe -LOVE THE SONG AA -The dude's voice is so good here Seventh song -Love how the playlist switches up the vibe so much -Nice intro that fades into more drums and stuff -Overall good song Eighth song -Bit of an odd intro imo -Meh -Probably going to be my least fav of the playlist, skipping it Ninth song -Now this is very nice -The lyric meaning is cool -Fire beat actually :) Tenth Song -Pretty good beat -Like the lyrics -Not AMAZING, but I still like it, nothing much else to say abt it 11th song -Nice intro -Like the drums and guitar -Lyrics are cool!! 12th song -Intro is very interesting in a good way :) -Love the sudden burst of guitar -Overall a bop -Cool ending actually 13th song -Again good vibe -Lyrics are cool -Like the song a good deal :) Overall: 7.5/10 playlist, I really liked it!

I had never heard this particular White Stripes album in full, but was excited to dive in, considering it happens to hold my favorite Stripes song (Blue Orchid)! I wouldn't say I was disappointed with what the album held, but it was ultimately less interesting to me than the previous two albums, Elephant and White Blood Cells, both of which are found on this project. The White Stripes are still excellently creative on this album, but they've definitely shed a lot of the garage rock and even blues rock sounds that made them so interesting to me. Don't get me wrong, the sounds are still there, albeit more subtle and stripped. Things feel and sound a lot more generally indie on this album, and at times, even a bit avant-garde. This is about a 3 in my book, which is what I have rated their other albums on this project. That said, this album is probably the weakest of the three inclusions, in my opinion.

Good gems on here. 3.5 solid

A classic that I like from before.

Eerste nummer was nice de rest meh

Cool vibe. Some songs don’t appeal to me but solid rock album!

I have mixed feeling about the White Stripes and this album. I really like the musically and would rate the instruments almost a 5/5. But the lyrics just don’t do it for me. Like a 2/5 for me.

Wasn't into it during the first stretch of the album but I warmed up to it pretty quickly. Once again fun, a bit quirky, and interesting vocals. Truly unique for its time. Reminds me somewhat of Arcade Fire.

Not nearly as good as Elephant

Interesting direction The White Stripes went in. I really enjoyed this album.
