Reviews (page 7 of 12)
Decent and different. Not my favorite but an ok listen
Noen skikkelig bangers, men ellers ikke det beste de har gjort.
This honestly had some pretty interesting tones and textures (although lacking bass guitar.) Jack White has a very agile voice
Not bad. Not great. Pretty good flow and a listen to from start to finish.
Super boring and bland
The White Stripes piano driven album. Sounds better than I would've thought! Favorite track: Blue Orchid
Better than Coldplay
Banger of an album
Nice enough album but didn’t have their best song on it 6/10. Quite random noises at times
Favorite Track: Instinct Blues
uneven, even for JW. But not bad. 4 for songs, 3 for the whole album.
Well. It starts real good, then it fades... making it overall pretty average. Not my fave White Stripes album.
not their best, but fun
Average, 3 stars.
Some of the songs were cooler than others.
Enjoyed this one more than White Blood Cells, but I still find that their music just doesn't stay with me, apart from the singles I already know. My Doorbell, Blue Orchid, Denial Twist and Take Take Take are all great, but the rest of it I can take or leave. I think Meg White gets too much hate as a drummer, she's great and gives them a very recognizable sound.
Oli parempi kuin luulin. Pitää kuunnella uudestaan. Varovainen arvio sen takia. 3,25/5.
some good, some meh
I find Jack White to be one of the most over-rated musicians of the last 30 years. There is no way this is essential listening. This album is just another example of the benign mish mash of genres that The White Stripes generally offer up. There are more piano based tunes on here than previously, which doesn't help, and the guitar based 70s rockers fare better imo. Its not great, and its not dreadful. Its just a bit flat and I can't see myself revisiting this.
A few great tracks, but not their best.
Paar gute Songs dabei. Blue Orchid und I'm Lonely fand ich gut.
good but meh
Fun! Nothing stood out to me but I like the sound.
Ihan ok kokonaisuutena, vähän erikoista mutta pari oikein hyvää biisiä, mm. I’m lonely
2005 I've got two albums from TWS, plus a Jack White solo, but I'd not heard this offering before. I can however confirm that it sounds like all the others. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ I can listen to one of the others Generic ★★★☆☆ (6/10)
Jack White has more talent in his pinky than I have total. The skill is undeniable but the White Stripes have never really been my bag. A few good songs I hadn't heard before.
I'm not always a fan of the vocals and other than two songs, I'm not seeing myself listen to this album again. But it is good music.
It's an alright album, I don't personally think it's anything amazing not I wouldn't turn it off either. Perfect 3 star candidate
I can't figure out why I want to like The White Stripes, but they just don't do it for me. The album is interesting, and some songs are worthwhile. I'm just not a fan. Dunno.
Simplistic enough, though it doesn't grab me
The Good: We’re in front of satan… The Bad: I’d rather be able to see what he’s doing… The Ugly: … What? Marimba? There are those who view The White Stripes as godlike, which probably explains why the album is named as it is, and then there are those who don’t… Not that the album is bad… it’s actually pretty good for the time frame. However, if you compare this to rock albums by those who ruled rock when rock ruled… well, then this is just another rock album that somebody has plastered on a 1001 list… 3*
Pretty good, but didn't stick with me.
Interesting entry in the overall list. Banjo on Little Ghost brought it. Listened before? N Saved tracks? Y. A couple Favorite tracks? My Doorbell, Forever For Her (Is Over For Me), Little Ghost, The Denial Twist ⭐⭐⭐ Liked it. Saved some tracks.
Good record but it doesn’t quite reach the heights of Elephant or White Blood Cells for me.
It irks me that this is in the list, because there are 3 better white stripes albums. Are there going to be 4 white stripes albums in the whole list? Seems unlikely. So, although this is still good, my irritation prevents me from scoring more than a 3
slower blues rock, a few great songs. I prefer Elephant, but for fans this is a good one to listen to
Love Jack White, but not my favorite White Stripes album. Still, damn good
Album is good, but doesn't quiet have a few standout tracks that you come back to. Favorite track: the denial twist other picks: blue orchid, my doorbell, little ghost
Aside from "Forever For Her (Is Over For Me)," this is a steady descent after "Blue Orchid." You can hear the White Stripes pushing the boundaries of their sound, but none of that lands quite like when they stick to what they do best.
You Took A White Orchid And Turned It Blue 1001 Albums Generator 118 (09/15/2025) The third White Stripes album that I've listened to on this list, Get Behind Me Satan, is unfortunately my least favorite. Some moments of genius are interspersed with misguided experiments. Blue Orchid is a great, classic White Stripes tune, and The Nurse is really interesting. I can't say that I necessarily like it, but I respect it. I really like how the drum groove of The Denial Twist sounds almost trip hop-y. I feel like that's kind of an insane thing to say, but it's great. Instinct Blues is another great song that has the sound I have come to expect from The White Stripes. This is the least guitar I've ever heard on a White Stripes album, opting instead for piano and marimba on many of these songs, and I think it suffers for it. The soft songs, as usual, are some of the weakest songs here. I don't really like Forever For Her (Is Over For Me) or Little Ghost. White Moon is quite boring and Passive Manipulation is another bad jokey Meg interlude. As Ugly As I Seem is a good almost country-esque acoustic song though. It has a very 70's sound to it. Cool song! Get Behind Me Satan is the definition of a "mixed bag". It is certainly the most eclectic White Stripes album that I have heard, but that eclecticism does not always lead to positive results. 3/5. Favs: Blue Orchid The Denial Twist As Ugly As I Seem Least Fav: Little Ghost
Better than expected. Never would've imagined that that fucking doorbell song was the white stripes, but there you go
Interesting for exploration but not critical
Hit and miss. Definitely some hits on this one, but others just fell flat. 3.5/5
The transition from Blue Orchid to The Nurse was weird. I thought my phone suddenly started playing media from somewhere else. In general, this was fine. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): My Doorbell; Little Ghost; The Denial Twist; Take, Take, Take ⭐⭐⭐: Liked it. Saved some tracks.
Very all of the place, first song, instinct blues is great, an ... where great. The rest was kinda mehh
Some really solid songs in this selection.
I just don’t like this type of music.
I can appreciate Jack White, but I’m not a White Stripes fan. The songs on this album with little to no drums were great and enjoyable. But Meg White sure loves her cymbals. Any song with drums just turned into noise for me and lost all musicality.
I can appreciate it but I had to turn it off because I found it unlistenable while trying to do work. It's too experimental, and half the songs end up in a carcaphony of cymbals an noise.
Music and vocal are really great with a unique style. Some big hit songs on this one that are probably embedded in pop culture enough to have heard them without listening to the album. It's good stuff but isn't really my thing. I can see how someone ten years younger than me would have this as one of their top albums but I was probably just a little too old when it came out.
I wasn't feeling it but it's good I guess?
This is very different than the previous album by The White Stripes I listened to (Elephant), but I’m not sure if I like it better. I like the pianos that are present here, but Jack White’s voice can be annoying sometimes. I’m very torn between a 3 and a 4.
# Album Name: Get behind me Satan # Artist: White Stripes # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: I like the WS. Megs drumming on this album takes a very central focus point. Shes a good drummer. The album is very hit or miss for me. Has several good tracks but also goes off into weird directions. When this album hits, it hits well, but when it doesnt, its a bit of a random shit storm # Top Tunes: Blue Orchid / Doorbell / Forever for her / Denial Twist # Would I listen to it again? Only a few tracks
This is a good album, but not great. It's not even ranked as one of their own top albums. I do like the way it was recorded with a drum-forward sound. It sounds good. Pitchfork: 7.3 Rolling Stone: n/a Best songs Blue Orchid My Doorbell Take, Take, Take
Me sorprendió para bien :) Muy buenos!
Meh. No es de los mejores de la banda.
surprisingly I didn't find them displeasing
Amazing open to a quite mediocre album.
It’s ok
Enjoyed it in parts but would be in no rush to listen to the album again.
Big step down from Elephant, they try new sounds that I feel don't really work, not yet ⭐️Blue Orchid, The Denial Twist 68/100
siempre un viaje
Having a hard time reconciling myself with this album... I enjoyed it as a whole, and my musical tastes tell me I should rate this higher, but it was a bit weird a song at a time. I feel I enjoy the White Stripes in general and really love certain tracks but maybe this hit me on the wrong day, today I can’t rate this higher than a 3
3.2/didn't feel cohesive but i could enjoy parts
I find the album interesting. But find Jack Whites voice slightly grating. And feel like it’s missing something with the minimal instrumentation. Some decent standout tracks but on the whole the album feels a bit rushed and not overly cohesive. Would give 2.5 stars but will round up to 3 as the album grew on me as it went on.
No strong feelings, ended up going down an internet rabbit hole about Rita Hayworth after reading the wiki for the album.
Unexpectedly I quite enjoyed some tracks. 'My doorbell' was strange but captivated me.
Not as good as the other Stripes
3rd White Stripes album!? It'll have to be special Blue Orchid is strong, Nurse has an African feel? Actually interesting Okay, all songs are decent. This is probably the best of the White Stripes albums on the list (so far!) White Moon and Instinct Blues bit more boring, typical Stripes Best track - Nurse, The Denial Twist 3 or 4 stars? Call it 3 in the end
I always enjoy the White stripes
Dad- NA Mom- 6 Mike- NA Lori- 7.5 Michael- 7 Miles- NA Cole- NA Avg- 6.83
I liked this one more than Elephant but it didn’t feel all that special. Meg White really is everything to this duo, she’s so good. I prefer In The Cold, Cold Night as her song but I was glad to see she got a little bit of vocals on this too.
Never fully listened to an album from them before. Much more varied instrumentally than expected; I went in thinking Blue Orchid (the only song I heard from here before) would be a good indicator for the rest of the album. I do have a personal bias towards idiophones so enjoyed the non-drum percussion; but outside of a few songs, none of them really clicked for me. 6.5/10 Favorites: Forever for Her (Is Over for Me), The Denial Twist, Red Rain
really solid album, 3.5 but will round down to a 3
Would give it a 3.5 if I could. Went into the album expecting basic grunge rock vibes, and was surprised by a lot of the Stripes' choices. Dynamic percussion, vocals, and guitar, as well as a surprisingly high usage of the piano added a lot of complexity to the album which took me by surprise many times. I understand why this is considered an album you need to listen to before you die, the only reason I'm not giving it four stars is out of my own personal enjoyment. While there were some standout bangers like Blue Orchid and As Ugly As I seem, I won't see myself listening to the album again anytime soon. Still a great listen though.
Starts off with a banger then kind of tapers off. Every song sounded like it was from a. Different album altogether but unkind of liked that. Not a huge fan of the album as a whole though Specific - 3.4 Fav song- blue orchid Least fav- forever for her
Each song had something I liked but there weren't any I really loved. Favourite song: Little Ghost Least: Instinct Blues
Mostly innovative but it started to sound the same after a while
SEVEN NATION ARMIEEE
Fellinluvwitha GIRL^O^
I can tell that we are gonna be friends XD
Was a big White Stripes fan growing up and to me their music now just feels absolutely culturally irrelevant in nearly every way. Still a few bangers though and even the non-bangers are fine. Sometimes I wish they leaned into the garage style like 5x as hard and just made it sound like absolute shitty fucking cardboard but so it goes Fav song: Red Rain or Instinct Blues
The tension between the one who wants to be the travelling electro shock blues man and the one who wants to go home.
Jack White is very creative and I like some of his production ideas, but I feel like these songs were slapped together during a studio jam session with nothing particularly outstanding.
I appreciate the variety in arrangements on this record, it does help keep it interesting. But, at the end of the day, it's not enough to tip the scales for me. I love so much of Jack White's work. The White Stripes albums... they are hopelessly hampered by the two-musician formula. I'll take a Raconteurs album over this every time. Or a Jack White solo album. Love the indie spirit, love that this is regarded highly. I get bored.
A solid album, though I'm not sure it warrants inclusion on this list. You can really hear Jack's influences on this one, which I like, but it's not as inspired as the other two albums represented on here. Hard to know what to give this, so I'll go right down the middle, even though I think it's probably better than a 3.
The level of depth and musicianship is raised here as the band evolve.
This was.... fine? I was expecting more from THE White Stripes but this was just... middle of the road? Nothing too special here
This was fine. They shouldn’t let Meg sing, though. Oof.
When I think of The White Stripes, I think of Seven Nation Army, regardless of all the other amazing Jack White songs I've heard throughout the years. This album felt like that energy, matured. Still aggressive and rebellious, but also self reflected and aware. I can see the talent, but I also feel like if this is a high quality highlight, there's not much else for me to see here.
I liked some of the aspects of rock in this album! Not totally my vibe but I enjoyed the listen.
One amazing track. The rest is meh.
Get Behind Me Satan might not bring anything new. It’s your typical White Stripes album with great guitar work, loud drums, a song with “little” in the title and a couple of acoustic numbers. At least is a record that could keep up with the myth this duo created back in the 2000s.
I liked the use of different instruments in all of the songs. Got pleasantly surprised at the begging, the rest were just fine. Not really my favorite
Musically, pretty awesome, but I could smell the pretense through my AirPods.
Lots of rock stuff as expected, which is quite good, and its also cool how full quite a lot of these bits sound with just drums and guitar, you don't really notice the lack of bass. But there are also lots of acoustic/quieter songs, some use interesting instruments, like the one with a marimba or xylophone or something. I'm not too keen on the fake rockabilly voice which I think (hope) he puts on. Some parts feel a bit dated, like some of the vocal bits which sound like ACDC, but I think are actually much better that ACDC, as they feel more natural/less strained. Favourite songs: blue orchid, the nurse, forever for her (is over for me), the denial twist, take, take take, red rain. Overall around 6/10
Jaha?
Not their best
Good! A part ot e 'The White Stripes' I've never heard before. Refreshing and all around every song was somewhat, 'different' -- nothing underlying to connect them from a sound standpoint.
A departure from the guitar driven punk\garage rock sounds of the previous albums. Art is reaching, and they were reaching for something greater here. I'm not sure they reached it, but they gave us at least one more great track.
Solid. But this isn’t an essential White Stripes album, is it? I appreciate, though, that the band was open to some new sounds. Marimba FTW!
I’ve come around a lot more on the White Stripes in later years. Blue Orchid is a banger. The rest is pretty good.
At times a solid 4, but then it slowly ended with me losing that feeling.
Not essential White Stripes, still good but not great. Probably the least listened to album from their catalogue for me personally and if I never hear it again I'll be ok with it
THIS WAS NOT THAT BAD....it's not their best but it made me want to get a coffee in williamsburg nonetheless
It's a White Stripes album, so it is good/great. But I'm not sure why this one in particular got picked. Maybe it is the most varied, I guess? Like most White Stripes albums, it has a number of great tracks, but also some misses. I do like My Doorbell and the songs with some marimba on them, but the back half falls off a bit. Gonna go with a 3, while other WS albums will be higher.
their sound kinda blended together into one same old at one point and left me wanting something a bit different
This is fine
I enjoyed a lot of tracks on this album but something about the album as a whole didn’t flow together very well for me.
Certainly the Garage Rock Revival of the mid to late aughts, and the Stomp Clap ascendency of the early 2010s would have not had the momentum behind it were it not for The White Stripes. This album showcases The White Stripes influence on the latter, which the crunchy guitars and low fi sounds typical of their work fading away to Mandolin and Piano. The White Stripes were clearly tend setters and architects of that movement, but I am not sure the new direction of this album fully resonates. I couldn't really pick one song that I really enjoyed that got under my skin, but I find that with the White Stripes I often usually need to find the song I like out of their entire collection as opposed to liking their sound. In contrast, I could easily listen to 2002's "The Big Come Up" by the Black Keys (a band clearly influenced by the White Stripes) and find myself enjoying it all. I am not sure if it has to do with the nearly always borderline whiney Jack White's voice, or the often odd Americana departures that always take place in their albums, but something just doesn't hit for me even though I know the musicians are talented and the music well wrought.
Elephant? Yes. Should be on this list. This one? Not so much. Not that it’s bad, but it’s not essential in such a list. So many great albums not on this list.
🍬
No me dice mucho. No es mi estilo.
Still a bit annoying
The white stripes minus the guitars
I think this runs just shy of a 4 for me. Some really good tracks on this, but I think I prefer The White Stripes in a less blusey mode.
Alright
Blue orchid absolutely fantastic. That song alone is worth greatness. The whole album sounds like a variety of things. Nothing hits like first track, but that doesn't mean other songs aren't fun and also get stuck in my head. "I'm thinkin' about my doorbell, and when you gonna, when you gonna ring it"
If the guy who plays for entirely too long at Guitar Center was inspired by The Beatles White Album. Not bad, but not very structured and way too noodly. Also entirely too many bells (doorbells or otherwise).
More piano than I expected. It's pretty good but I'm not sure it needed to be in the book.
Oh. Not elephant or white blood cells (wonder if it's my own bias thinking that they're more important?) Doorbell is so good. I feel like the rest of the record struggles to keep up. The last track is a classic white stripes country ballad - really nice work. Was this the first time he used that kind of octave pedal sound? It's more electronic & modern than I remember from earlier records.
I understand why so many people like the white stripes and jack white is a great guitarist but I just cant get that into it
Mid but in a good way
I mean it’s alright
Wait, does that mean eachother IS Satan? Does devil make apple point studio music microphone? God is gud saved to be sure #revelations. That is my impression of real people (supposedly) who comment on local news posts on Facebook. They really have their finger on the pulse. I think it takes early onset dementia and an internet connection to really break through and see the veins of the world exposed. Where does the lifeblood flow? Tell us, oh retired steel plant worker from Knoxville. Is the local vet executing marmots in service of the dark lord?? Only you can break the curse. Anyway, it’s the White Stripes! A later release from them, but an album that certainly had an impact on young me. I will recognize a lot here. Let’s see how it holds up. Blue Orchid - I am a sensitive guy. I believe I read a negative review of this song like 15 years ago and it stuck with me forever to the point where I believe the sneering music reviewer community hates this song like poison. Even if that is true, I can’t deny this song. The high pitched vocals are electrifying, the stark drums do exactly what they need to and this is a perfect rock opener. Snarky internet reviewers be damned. Hey. Is it suddenly brimstoney in here? The Nurse - Nursery rhyme type music with brutal, off-time stabs of rock. This track is off to a fascinating start. Interesting song that never fully got off the ground. I liked the intentional clash of instrument styles. My Doorbell - This song was UNDENIABLE for 9 year old me. Would I trust that little guy’s taste levels? Probably not, but listening to this song as an adult, I can’t help but be overcome with a sense of sweet nostalgia. Opt me out of the insightful critical eye here. I’m too busy here in 2005. Forever For Her (Is Over For Me) - The Marimba is back. This song was kind of a sleeper. Not my favourite. Little Ghost - Alright. A little bluegrass moment. Hell yeah. I like it. The Denial Twist - another fun rock song. Nothing mind-blowing but it works pretty well. White Moon - Nothing much to say on this one. It’s fine Instinct Blues - There is some of that grit and heaviness I expected coming in. Well, actually I expected this to be fully sanitized for radio, but this is actually bluesy and pretty aggressive. Passive Manipulation - What the hell is this vocal. I like it. Charming in its awfulness. Fun interlude. Take, Take, Take - Did The White Stripes invent this sound? I know Cage the Elephant goes this way as well, but who came first. I’m sure somebody will be screaming that some Britpop pre-vival (predicting the revival before the genre officially exists) band from 1982 wrote this song or something. Whatever. This is a good track, wherever or whenever it came to be. As Ugly as I Seem - A song title that had promise, but a middle of the road track. Red Rain - We’re back. Even with the Fischer-Price Xylophone on full display, the riff and production choices here are hard as hell. Great rock song. I’m Lonely (But I Ain’t That Lonely Yet) - An odd ballad closer. I like the spirit of it in general. Just as a bizarre outro, but as a song itself? Maybe the album ends with Red Rain on the next listen. I enjoy the White Stripes. This is probably something I’d revisit regardless, but I do have to say that this was missing a lot of the urgency that I enjoyed from their earlier work. Bands often mellow with time, and I think they were nearing the end of their creative “rope” if you will. And if you won’t? I don’t care. It’s my review, I’ll use tired cliches if I want to. I won’t even add the accent to cliché. Well I will that time. Whatever. Stop bothering me. The trademark songwriting and bursts of energy make this a solid album, albeit a slight let down from their 2001 effort. With all that out in the open, if you’re looking for creative rock music with fun flourishes AND you like artists that are part of murals at the Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown, PEI, oh buddy have I got the album for you. 3-3.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Blue Orchid, My Doorbell, Take, Take, Take, Red Rain
Artistically interesting, but not my thing.
fine but unmemorable
Never been a fan of this band. For me it's rock you hear in commercials. It's not bad but I just don't enjoy it.
Wasn't a fan of the novel sounds.
Blue Orchid is good, but the rest of the album doesn't reach that height.
Not bad. not great.
Nice. Perhaps not the best album by them, but its good. 'As ugly as I seem' is fantastic.
I remember buying this album off the strength of Elephant, and mostly being... confused. There's sparks of brilliance in there, and I wanted to believe that Jack White had handcrafted a slice of all kinds of Americana to make a truly widespread album, but listening back now it's just not all that. Also apparently it was done in less than two weeks, so it's less "artisanal" and more "throw everything at it and rush out of the door". Blue Orchid still goes hard though.
Good, but this is like the 3rd white stripes album I'm getting. Just pick one I guess.
Note before I start this: I don’t think I’m gonna be able to make it through this. I kind of hated Elephant, and I don’t expect this to be anything different. But, we’ll see. Alright, this is better than expected. It’s far more varied and interesting than Elephant. Alright, the more I listen to this one, the more I like it. Funny thing is that I don’t remember this album getting nearly as much attention as Elephant, but it feels like a more fleshed out, mature White Stripes. I recognize some of the songs, but the other songs that I don’t recognize because of the radio are so much more interesting than the filler on Elephant. I’d listen to this record again, though I don’t love it so much that I’d put it on repeat. This is probably a solid 3-star approaching 4-star record for me, which is probably high praise considering how bored I was with Elephant.
I like the feel, but the schtick gets old
Not nearly as good as their first album. The drums need to be remixed. 2.5/5
Blue orchid is so good. I wish the lead vocal could do better though. Such a nice song. Also liked the marimba in the nurse. Reminds me of the nurse who got fired because she stripped off for her patients. Overall it’s a pleasant listen but I’m not sure if I like his voice…-1 for vocal performance.
Blue Orchid is such a killer track. short, sweet, and rocking to the point. its a good one. i didn't struggle getting through this album at all, but i did struggle seeing on how this made the list. i really like Jack White, but part of me feels like this made the list due to his progression as an artist. without knowing the first three White Stripes albums really well and being able to understand his progress as a musician/songwriter, this album years a bit more to be desired. definitely not a bad album, but it seems like there is more going over my head.
I've never been the biggest The White Stripes fan outside of "Seven Nations Army". It's not that I think they're bad, they've just never really grabbed me. This album was interesting. It was more varied than I thought it would be with some standout songs. It's still not something that I'll come back to though.
*I like (don't love) the White Stripes. *Fave Song - My Doorbell (also the only one I already know on this album) *Starts out pretty standard Jack White - mellow and melodic, but still interesting. Turns into more experimental, and I'm just not here for it. *Research - I didn't know White was Meg's surname and Jack took it when they got married in 1996. This was their 5th of 6 albums after breaking up in 2011. RATING - 6.5/10
OK, but nothing special
I've always felt Jack White is a criminally underrated musician of this generation. However, feel like he may be better in small doses than a full album as he does get old after a bit. I felt like the first half of this album was a lot stronger than the second but still a good listen. 6/10 (3/5)
Every White Stripes album I've listened to has been interesting and worth listening to but this wasn't one of my favorites.
I'm giving this a very generous 3 stars. Many of the songs were lackluster, but tunes like "My Doorbell" saved it from being a complete snooze fest. I appreciate the white stripes were going for something different here - not just sticking to their usual formula . I respect it, but ultimately it's just not as good as some of their other albums.
Some fun songs but ultimately not all that much grabbed me
A surprising range, I feel like this album covered multiple genres
Their crazy garage rock image was replaced by quirky garage drum and vocal, which was pretty fun, but not for the whole record.
Let's go!
Liked it better than I expected to. Particularly the last track. Still probably won't return to it
This is my first white stripes album which is unfortunate because this is widely considered their weakest. While not bad in any way I understand why. If this is the worst then I'm excited for the others
K-Rect
Plutot plaisant!
Maybe the best White Stripes album I have listened to...I appreciate the weirdness. Never been a huge WS fan though...always felt they were really overrated. 3.5/5
I find it often to be the case with the White Stripes that their albums will have a handful of really good songs, and then a bigger handful of forgettable noise rock. In this case, I imagine that if I was to own this record then side A would get plenty of play, with side B being very neglected. I really enjoyed the first half of this album. The second half left me bored.
It’s good but I can’t appreciate it.
Not my favorite White Stripes album. Give me more guitar and less piano
Hadn’t listened to this one in a while. Always gravited towards ‘White Blood Cells’ and Elephant but this one, though deviated from those, still was solid in its own right.
I like this album. Except for a few songs.
Pretty decent. Some good songs but other than the unexpected instruments it was just regular 2000s rock
For the bluesy-rock of the White Stripes, there is definitely some experimenting going on here. Even so, you can hear that almost instantly recognizable sound that they have. While Jack White gets most of the credit, I think Meg White is an underappreciated drummer. It is just as much the drumming as the guitar that gives them that sound. Great group, interesting album.

Okay okay. I listened to this a lot when I was 18 or whatever. I liked the White Stripes, but they were never mine. They were never my shit. I'm finding it to be a pleasant listen. But similar to when I was 18, it's still not my shit. Less guitar forward on Get Behind Me Satan, taking some chances which is interesting. MY DOORBELL is suprisingly dancy. LITTLE GHOST hits like Jack White doing a weird lil folk song. THE DENIAL TWIST sounds more classic white stripes. Syncopative piano chords vocals that are punchy and expressive. Splashy cymbals. Some sort of fuckin shaker that holds it all together. TAKE TAKE TAKE follows a similar formula that makes the white stripes so good. RED RAIN w dat slide. Its a high 3 for me. Solid album but theres more to come from Jacky.
Blue orchid is great. Feels like Marc Bolan would approve. The Nurse calms it down again before upping the fun again with My Doorbell. Really like the way the words spit out. Little Ghost is fun but the ones around don't leave much impression on me until Take, Take, Take. It was difficult to get into at the start but by the end of the song I enjoyed it. I'd skip Red Rain. I'm Lonely is a good ending.
Anthemic, varied. Some great singles and a refreshing level of experimentation. It doesn’t always gel together. Weak 3. I don’t feel harsh because they have better albums Blue Orchid, My Doorbell, Red Rain
Lots of good individual songs but no overall integrity to the album. Arrangements are bare / interesting. Big drum sound. Deconstructed rock (?)
A handful of hits are mixed in with what sounds like b-sides. It’s quite exciting if this is the worst The White Stripes record because it’s really not that bad. Makes me want to get more familiar with their discography. I especially like how skittish and ridiculous My Doorbell is.
Enjoyable but not my genre, enjoy the stranger tracks.
To be honest, I was hesitant to check out The White Stripes because I thought they were your typical pop-ified rock band. What I heard on this album, however, was quite a bit more interesting. There's nothing groundbreaking here, but it's pleasant rhythmic music with a decent amount of variety. However, most of the songs feel like they're missing something. It is way too minimalist (although not quiet or slow), and I think the songs would've benefited from more layers. But overall this is still good and a pleasant surprise by a band I wasn't expecting much from. 7/10
Don't really understand why this is the White Stripes on this list, but Blue Orchid and The Denial Twist are great songs, among their best. 3 Stars.
not as catchy as i've expected
Meh, I don't know this was fine. The White Stripes are cool enough, but could not imagine being super in to them and listening to them a bunch. They have better records than this for sure.
A nice collection of songs, but one that lacks the power and impact of their previous albums.
i'm not a fan of the band or jack white's bullshit in general, but i do have a bit of nostalgia for this one - my best friend in high school was a big fan and a few of these songs were on mix tapes we traded- the whole first side was pretty familiar. the nurse is a stand-out track. but even the 35-second song feel too long by about half.
Not much new to say about White Stripes. This is a grab bag of styles - a bit of a Beggars Banquet. Pleasant enough, but I feel like I've heard it all before. Competent Rock & Roll.
Jack White has plenty of style. I have to give him credit, even if it's not really my thing. He sings like a strained, smaller Robert Plant, and this band conspicuously lacks bass. Well done for what it is.
I can’t fully get behind this album, or any Jack White project, for that matter, but I’ll gladly walk at Satan’s side.
some very nice music but i listened to this while studying so i didn’t pay much attention. i will be listening again
I’m a big fan of the 2000s indie rock revival but I found this album very mid
I like how they have a consistent red-white-black album cover theme
"Blue Orchid" is such a strong opener. I've always loved how the guitar sounds in that particular track, heavy but not quite distorted, thanks to the guitar pedal. The album sonically jumps in different directions from there on, settling more into piano-driven melodies and into some use of the mandolin and marimba among others. I'm sure this was a shock for some coming off the release of the much more garagey/bluesy rock "Elephant" from two years prior. This is most definitely the group's "experimental" album. This work isn't generally what I think of when someone mentions the White Stripes. However, I've always been fond of this album's singles and Jack's admirable experimentation in the songwriting/production + Meg's steady hands on the drums make this album feel simultaneously fresh and familiar.
I can remember a time where if I heard this for the first time I would have liked it, but it just seems too whatever and normal now.
While I've grown to appreciate some earlier White Stripes albums only recently, I still can't get into a lot of their catalog. This album has some moments that get my attention, but overall it didn't do much for me. I might try it again at some point, but it's not an album I'll be rushing to replay. 2.75/5
Was looking at a 2 rating until "Take, take, take." Really enjoyed that one and the songs that followed.
not as bad as i thought, still a little corny. i still don't know if i vibe with meg white's drumming, some songs the simplicity works and some it really doesn't
I feel like I was listening but not hearing. Yesterday was a weird day so I wasn't in the headspace to vibe. I love The White Stripes so I have heard many a song from this album. Going to rank it 3/5 cause I enjoyed but it didn't change my life or have insane production flow.
There were some special chemistry between Jack and Meg White. White stripes didn't invent anything new, but they did have their own vision, which definitely is audible in all of their records. Also, one of the best live bands i've seen!
I like White Stripes fine, but some of their music is just too artsy to me. Feels like Jack White is hell bent on being artsy as fuck, making rock music with glockenspiel by leftal force if he has to. Lots of fine tunes on this one too, but I prefer their White Blood Cells and Elephant.
always a fan of different instruments, some really catchy tunes but some just forgettable unfortunately. i think i expected or hoped itd be better? 3.5/5
Look man I appreciate the White Stripes but I just couldn't do it. Stopped halfway and went back to other Brit Rock.
The aughts picks on the list get really lazy. I know, everybody wants to create, nobody wants to maintain. If you need three White titles, which you don't, as we lack... So Many Aughts Records, De Stijl is better.
Really don't know why this White Stripes album was chosen. I love the White Stripes but this is far from their best.
The White Stripes have made some great albums … and some average ones.
This is the third album from The White Stripes that this list recommended me, and in comparition, it is the worst of the three. My main problem with this record is the lack of the presence of the guitar. In the previous works, a lot of the energy came from the incridebile tone and riffs of the guitar. Now, you are just left with a paino, Jack's voice, Meg's, a marimba and some occasional guitars. All of these elements are not bad, in fact, the White Stripes' style and sound is still present and recognizable, but it lacks the punch and power from their previous albums.
Early indie, but doesn't hold up very well
I didn't love it, but I liked it. No one song stood out to me.
Fighting the urge to rate this lower, just by virtue of being tired of this album and the songs on it. I can't deny how influential it was and the kind of hold Jack White had on the genre at the time. Good music, interesting presentation at the time.
Not a huge white stripes fan but there are a handful of hits on this album
Pretty decent album, good songwriting, quite different to its predecessor, more mature. But that's a shortcoming here. I prefer the more aggressive style of them ...
Doesn’t hit as hard as when it first came out. Still good, but not worth a ton of relistens.
I know a couple of these tracks, but did not expect this one to be in this list. This band is very interesting. Always thought the White Stripes were interesting.
It was fine, couple of good tracks but don't think it's amazing
This is a very OK album. Was kinda boring but I quite like the last song. Good length too. Always appreciate when an artist understands how boring they are and don't make you listen for long.
A bit of a step down from white blood cells and elephants, 2 albums I absolutely love, but there still is Jack White's genius all over this album so it's still good. It's definitely weirder than their others so it might have to grow on me but I still enjoyed it.
Probably gets better the more I listen to it and get into the genre
Muy buen álbum, White Stripes transmite la energía necesaria para enfrentar un día aburrido.
Good album from a great band, but admittedly maybe only their 3rd or 4th best record. They get a little bit of "The Who" sort of treatment on this list where this is maybe their 3rd or 4th time on it and I don't necessarily feel like every release needs to take a spot on the list. "Blue Orchid" is a solid song, and there are many cool moments where they feature a marimba and sort of like early-iphone-commercial sounding riffs which is cool, but the compositions themselves aren't completely memorable for me.
Yo this is the perfect album for a rainy day like today. Some bluesy, moody, 00s garage rock. The White Stripes are exactly what I wanna hear right now. I haven't heard this album or The White Stripes in general in such a long time. Its definitely not as good as their previous two albums but I think its the next best thing from them. Nothing could make me hate this album. Favorite track: Take, Take, Take 3.5/5
Some really great tracks. At times this verges on annoying, though. When it locks in it's great to listen to, but more than a handful of songs never really get to that place.
I am aware of this album’s reputation as the worst white stripes album. And after elephant just having listened to the first couple tracks, it’s not as raw as the other white stripes albums, a song like the nurse is actually really interesting but sounds more like it’s adjacent to the white stripes than sounding actually like the white stripes. Firstly you have the singles honestly I wasn’t hugely fussed on blue orchid it doesn’t sound very white stripes. Denial twist and My doorbell are good though. They’re all just rock songs really. Then you get into it a bit, white moon is pretty cool. Take take take I’d describe as pretty cool I love the drum. And red rain is awesome. But there’s lots of stuff I’m not thrilled by in the same way. Little ghost is alright, I like the folky twist but not a favourite of the ‘little’ songs honestly. Instinct blues honestly feels like an attempt to capture the zeitgeist of ball and biscuit back from elephant. It’s an alright album I prefer white blood cells and elephant though 3/5
Moments of brilliance. The fuzzy riff in Blue Orchid is a thing of beauty. The album feels theatrical, like a haunted vaudeville show. It doesn't ALL hit for me. But the highs cancel out the lows.
This was an ok album. Honestly of all the albums out there, do we really need two (so far) albums by the white stripes? I like the sound, it’s fine. Just surprised I got another one.
11. This album is pretty good. A lot of loud music in this and I like it. Also the Lyrics are very punk, very nice. Overall it's a good album, would I listen to it again? Probably not. Favorite Song: Blue Orchid Least Favorite Song: My Doorbell Overall Score 6/10
3.5 - Pretty good!
Wasn't better than White Blood Cells or Elephant for me!
It was pretty good
I like some of the songs, but they would have been a lot better with a better singer. Favorite song: instinct blues
Like the White Stripes and Jack White so no problem with this per se. Enjoyed more acoustic tracks. And guess no point beating the wider variety of artists line over multiple choices by fewer because this list is what it is, 3 Star, but would have been higher if wasn't 3rd J White have had so far, out of only 165
this album had a really good intro and then everything just fell apart afterwards. tho there were some good songs in-between but overall this album was okay.
Sure, I guess.
Bit slower and subdues than the first one I listened too
"Blue Orchid" what a greaaaat song to start with. Funny use of the xylophone during the first songs. "The Denial Twist" and "Red Rain" these 2 are pure bangers for suuuure. Clearly not the best album for me from the White Stripes. But the vibe in it is soo special and really interesting.
not a huge fan of TWS, aged better on me than i thought though
Hmm tror faktisk ikkje eg har hørt da før
Hadn’t heard this in a while, still sounds great. Jack White pushing the boundaries
A bit more annoying than I wanted it to be.
Estuvo ok
heard this many times as a teen, will try not to let nostalgia blind me Blue Orchid - 5/5 The Nurse - 2/5 My Doorbell - 4/5 Forever For Her (Is Over For Me) - 3/5 Little Ghost - 4/5 The Denial Twist - 5/5 White Moon - 2/5 Instinct Blues - 3/5 Passive Manipulation - no rating Take, Take, Take - 5/5 As Ugly As I Seem - 3/5 Red Rain - 3/5 I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet) - 3/5 Average score: 3.6/5 (rounding down) there are some classic tracks here, and i'd normally round up an album score like this one, but White Stripes have released faaaar better albums than this if i'm being honest meg white carries these tracks as always
point1.
Some good guitar playing and some catchy tunes, quite a diverse sounding album but nothing spectacular.
A total shift from what they were initially, experimental no doubt and it works. Rare cases of an artists or a band who decides to totally shift sounds and nails it
I like some of their tunes but overall The White Stripes never did it for me and that streak continues here.
An alright listen but I feel like this band has better albums as well.
I had fun
Have on vinyl: No Rating: 7.9 Fav Song: My Doorbell Notes: Like a lot of White Stripes, I want to like it more than I do.
Way more musical than what I was expecting from The White Stripes. Still has that stripped down sound, but the variations of instruments and exploration of genres makes this one a fun listen to me.
3.25/5 enjoyed a couple of the songs and the piano aspects of it but overall not for me
Pretty solid album throughout but nothing stood out to me (except the marimba in one song)
Just okay.
Regrettably I am that very specific age where every marimba just sounds like the Rugrats theme
meh
Ok
its alright
skulle kanske varit lite mer gitarr?
White stripes loud and rockin. Some experimental sounds and folky influence on this album took it in a new direction but overall a good time to listen to
An interesting mix of tracks. Quite enjoyable. Probably deserves more than a 3. Did you know you can sing Janis Joplin's "Mercedes Benz" to the tune of "I'm Lonely (But I ain't That Lonely Yet)"? The temptation to do so is very strong. 3/5.
I’ve always thought The White Stripes were slightly overhyped and this album doesn’t do a great deal to change my opinion. I can’t quite decide if this record highlights the fact that by this point they’ve started to believe the hype or just started to run out of ideas.
It's a little erratic as an album. I didn't really know where it was going
3.0 I don't really get the white stripes. They just seem pretty mediocre. Ok garage rock. One of those bands where a greatest hits album would be pretty decent, but each album seems to be 3 good songs + 7 or 8 filler.
I was surprised by another White Stripes album here. But it really is pretty good.
It's a decent effort from the most confused couple in rock, with some colour and variety added from piano plus a little exotica from the marimba. Not sure I would call the result anywhere near outstanding though.
What do you do after releasing a commercial hit album like Elephant? Well The White Stripes decided to follow it up with the experimental Get Behind Me Satan. All in all the album is OK but it lacks the cohesion that you get with less experimentation and I think, for me, that’s to the detriment of the songs
Good but the one before was better
Competent but doesn't really stand out from any of the other White Stripes stuff
Just another ex-1001 album!™ http://1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie.wikidot.com/album-artists-a-z-ex Usual stuff, I liked the singles but not too fussed about the album.
Like it 3/5
Slow paced, two songs were good (blue orchid and the nurse)
Nothing stood out for me on this. Nothing wrong with it, but I can't see myself listening to it again.
I liked this album, but there were only a couple tracks that I really liked. They make some weird choices in some of their songs like a marimba and then loud out of sync, distorted guitar rhythm over the top. And there’s a bit of piano pounding which always turns me off. Blue Orchid and I’m Lonely were my fave tracks. 3/5
Listened to this while browsing properties in Portugal, dreaming of leaving this shit-show. This album was a decent enough backdrop for that. The first track is a total banger...could not stand Doorbell...some good moments...some clunkers. Almost a 4...but not quite.
Okay, like a couple songs here
Meg gets a raw deal. It would have been easy to touch up her drumming in post. Keeping it as it is was a conscious choice. That aside. I actually remember nothing about this album, even though I saw them when they were touring it - Hammersmith Apollo, perhaps? It’s pretty anonymous, I think.
Legal
Not something I thought I would get into but had some saving graces. Only a 3 star though
Não me interessou.
Decent
Four for a few of the songs. I like their creativity and can listen through the album but would skip most of the songs if shuffled into my playlist.
First time I’ve listened to a WS album all of the way through. Fun album.
This record was on repeat in our household when it came out. Likely because it was one of the few newer vinyl records we owned. These were my indie sleaze good ol days, and listening to this will always make me think of that time. It has some stand out tracks, certified bangers, but there’s a lot more filler on this album that I had forgotten about.
medium rare rock
This is kind of interesting at times. Some blues, maybe the smallest dash of funk once or twice, and a vocalist adjusting their tempo to sound less like a lyricist and more like an instrument. I can see it making sense to have this on the list as a style. Doesn't blow me away but worth hearing once.
This has some pretty well constructed music. It also all feels very much like a person trying to emulate some songs they like. Not necessarily a bad thing. Art is layers of inspiration. It just takes some of the soul away. It means I'd mostly seek out the originals before thinking to put this on. Time will tell. I think this was removed from the list. That might be a bit harsh.
Honestly, this is one of the weaker White Stripes albums to me. I prefer their loud garage rock sound over this more acoustic sound. They do some experimentation which is to be commended but it isn't for me. Give me more like Blue Orchid.
I don’t hate the White Stripes, but I don’t love them either. It’s interesting because they are adjacent to or often considered similar to many bands I do love. So it goes
32/1001 - I try to be analytical while reviewing, but this album struck me with a strong personal response of complete neutral-ness. This is one of the most average albums I've heard. It sounds well made, they know their instruments and voices, but I don't feel one way or the other at the end of the day.
The frist track, Blue Orchids reminds me of solething familiar and as everything familiar it's quite pleasant. I kow the name White Stripes but it's not what I have in mind, then I realize the duo guitar_drums I am thnking about was made of two bloke, it stirkes me: it's the not the WHite Wtripes but the Black Keys I am thinking about. And I knw why I know the White Stripes: their previous hit THE SEVEN NATION ARMY with its signature bass guitar line. In overall the second listening of this album is not bad a quick glimpse at the texts reveals a diversity of themes with a not too shallow approach. The vocals are nice. Some tracks could have benefited a better orchestration.
Belle découverte de cet album, très sympa à l’écoute mais un album somme toute assez classique, rien de particulièrement notable à mes oreilles
2nd. The White Stripes album in 3 days. I love that none of their albums sound exactly the same, and clearly they are experimenting and evolving. I still think that their albums have a high ratio of filler. I love their sound(s), and I love a select few of their tracks, but even the shorter albums are just too long.
blue orchid- 5 the nurse- i like the xylophone, everything else is ass. 5 my doorbell- its giving jackson 5.... 4 forever for her- 4 little ghost- 5 denial twist- 2 stop stop stop white moon- 4 instinct blues- 4 i dont wanna do this anymore
It's the White Stripes at their most mediocre
Favourite song - blue orchid 2.5 stars
The first track was great, and I’m thinking to myself that this was going to be an unearthed collection of WS goodness. The rest got mediocre until the final track. And I love “I’m Lonely,” having no idea it was on this album. One more great WS song would have made this four stars.
6/10 - not really a fan but not terrible
Love Jack White’s work, but this is a bit of a meh album
It was OK. Lots of different sounds. Decent music but not amazing.
couple of good tracks, but nothing in the rest of the album stands out
It's good! Solid 3/5.
Basic in production, piano-driven melodies, experimentation with marimba. Sounds more like alternative rock + country + blues than grunge and punk. Favourites: My Doorbell (upbeat, Motown sound), Little Ghost (mandolin, Appalachian-style folk melody, bluegrass), Instinct Blues (raw, swampy blues rock about sexual frustration)
This pales in comparison to elephant. This is when I stopped liking the band and when they got too commercial. A precursor to solo Jack White which pretty much sucks
Pretty much perfect
It took me until the 4th song (Forever for Her) for me to determine i didn’t hate this. Forever For Her was my favorite song on here and some of the remaining songs were pretty good.
