Reviews (page 10 of 12)
You know, I really find Jack White annoying. I've given his music a chance on numerous occasions including this one and I just can't get into it. I find it to be retro in all the worst kind of ways. Palatable tracks: "Passive Manipulation" and "Red Rain"
please shut up. don’t make me listen to this again.
this album felt neverending and jack white’s voice is grating me. these songs are literally doing NOTHING. make it stop!!!!!!!!
Well I get why they took this one out. For one it is a transitional album, they get properly weird on Icky Thump for the whole thing (still a very patchy and goofy album that I don't like). This one lays their influences barer and I like that idea in theory but the songs are just not there. This isn't even a band I like but I want there to be electric guitar if I'm going to listen to them and a weird amount of songs here don't even have THAT .
terrible idea.... unbearable
It's weird going from a banger that is Blue Orchid to a song with a xylophone but alright. And the rest of the songs are head-scratchers too... Standout: Blue Orchid
They hit a wall that every two-piece band hits, the direction they chose to go in was incredibly annoying
Eh, it was fine for a moment. Not interesting
Production is good but it’s not great even for the white stripes
Un poco decepcionante, aburrido, sin alma. Un paso atrás para su discografía.
Good listen but probably won't return. There are some very low lows in this album.
I get why some people love this, but it’s not for me. Not totally unlistenable, though.
Enfadonho.
I’m bored but guess I liked blue orchid
Scrapbook dog ends
Just … okay? Some spots are higher points than the lower lows.
iconic album name
My 4th favorite WS album
I get them confused with The Black Keys, and I am always disappointed when it is not the real The Black Keys.
Just didn’t do it for me.
It's like Black Orchid is from a different album, as the album quickly degrades afterwards. Disappointing.
I thought I liked the White Stripes, turns out I like that one song from the White Stripes. Blue Orchid was okay, but the album quickly descended into what seemed like shit David Bowie impressions and weird noises (David Bowie basically). "The Nurse" was particularly difficult to get through and took me back to an encounter I had with a nurse when I was a kid. I had my TB injection at school but had a reaction that made my arm swell up enormously, so I had to spend a week in the children's hospital and missed my school trip to the millennium dome.. the one stand out memory I had was the nurse that would come in at night and give me my injections.. I pretended to be asleep whilst she did it, because she was horrible. Jammed the needles in and seemed to make sure it hurt.. you know, real Letby vibes.. for all I know it could have been her, before she got famous.. I was around for her earlier work. I'm glad I wasn't around for the White Stripes earlier work, as that feels like it would have been marginally worse. 2 stars because apparently the Millennium Dome was quite shit anyway.
I genuinely can’t tell if they were trying while making this. Except for on Blue Orchid
Ikke helt forståeligt med så meget Jack White på den her liste.
I enjoyed the radio songs, the rest were absolutely forgettable.
No one can convince me this belongs on the list
I thought I'd like this. But I didn't. "My Doorbell" is a simplistic nursey rhyme of a track in the same shit league as Lennon's "Imagine". How either song became a hit is anybody's guess. Other tracks are in a similar vein. The whole album sounds tinny and, although others have complimented the drumming, I found the drum sound is weak and like it's been recorded on a toy set. "Instinct Blues" is a tune up? And Meg White can't sing. Anything else? No I think I'm done here.
Kinda amateurish, not really a fan of the songs or their sound
This didn’t really do anything for me
I was well and truly over any interest in the Stripes by 2005 so I’d never heard this. What is this project without a gimmick? Merely a collection of OK blues songs.
Not for me. Can't get over Jack White's annoying voice.
Feb 3, 2026 - I'm having trouble....catching this album's vibe?
I will probably never get into The White Stripes, not my style. But shoutout to Meg White, she's the way cooler one. Despite her drumming being mostly quarter note bass + snare beats while hammering on a crash cymbal. She learned drums on a whim just dicking around on her boyfriends set, then married the guy, HE took HER last name, and that guy is still recognized by that last name and the name of the band. Jacks a coward, I hope Meg is doing well and rich AF and getting piped up on a beach in the Caribbean.
So as someone who has only heard 7 Nation Army and Jack White solos in other tracks, I expected this album to hit harder. While I appreciate the vocals in places, there were far more lullabies and steel drums than I'd have ordered on this album. Nothing really grabbed me and I'm not sure why this album made the list (perhaps the other 2 white stripes albums are worthwhile?) 3/10
(from my previous WS review) - Jack White seems like an aggro creep. Yes, he speaks out against the current Fascist regime in the US, but he assaults people and thinks "honour" is a reason to do so, doesn't speak about and blocks people who ask him about his views on genocide, and harassed Karen Elson. So, yet another band to add to the boycott list. - I listened to this album when it came out and got tired of it pretty quickly. Like all White Stripes albums, it has about a handful of bangers (this one is super front loaded) and the rest is totally skippable/forgettable filler that go on way too long, too. - His voice was particularly bad on this album - just so obviously out of tune. The songs felt too overdone/polished to make the bad singing work - it needs to be more garage-y for that to work for me, so his strained voice stood out too much here. - On the bangers, I like the instrumentation (piano, marimba, cool guitar licks), restrained at points and huge in others (e.g., The Nurse). - Wavering between a 2 and 3... are the bangers good enough to push it to a 3? I don't think so... I was pretty bored after the first handful of songs.
Listened Before? N IDK man, this one didn't really do it for me like the other WS albums. I think it's just getting kind of old at this point, and I miss the guitars. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: My Doorbell
I love the White Stripes but this album did not do it for me.
After hearing the (pleasant) instrumental of My Doorbell in so many car commercials, I was surprised to find Jack White giving one of the most annoying vocals of all time here.
Last White Stripes album from the generator, thank god. The older I get the more annoying their music gets. The 2nd song where Meg hits those drums like Slayer just hired her gave me a headache and the rest of the album after that was a miserable experience. Genuinely maybe just 3 good songs on the whole thing 2/5
C’est globalement bien mais c’est avant tout bof
Hit or miss for me. Some of the grooves I really got into, but ultimately wasn't enough for me give it more than 2 stars.
I really thought I liked White stripes before hearing this album. Hard to listen to for sure. Would not recommend.
Not offensive
Blue Orchid er en banger. Marimbaen i The Nurse høres ut som noe fra debuten til The The.
Me costó escucharlo. O no.
like mid...im not gonna listen again
not really my thing, first two songs feel very stagnant. Whenever I listened to a track I felt the urge to skip it Favourite track: n/a
Semmi érdekes nem történik, a dob csörömpölésnek hat, tucat számok
Interesting
For me the White Stripes are almost good. I generally like the sound, good driving rock. I just do not like the vocals, which makes it hard to listen to. I had a previous White Stripes album that was a solid 3, I like the vocals even less here, so despite this having potential with a good sound, it only musters a 2 as I really dont want to hear it again.
An un-Stripesy White Stripes outing: marimba, piano, weird arrangements. I liked the first and last songs, but the kooky morass in the middle was weak.
Listened while working. Not particularly engaging. interesting sonically, but didnt bang. Had some highs towards the end though
Not for meeee
Veel harde instrumenten dus stemmen lastig te horen vooral veel drum hoeverder in het album hoe zachter de liedjes werden ook steeds betere liedjes
This felt like a weird detour of what the White Stripes are good at, to something nowhere near as compelling. The switch from guitars to piano and marimba didn’t open the album up for me — it mostly flattened the energy. Jack White’s theatrical vocals feel more like a bit than a breakthrough here, and they rarely land with much weight. A couple songs stick, but most of it just drifts by without leaving much of an impression. Not bad, just oddly forgettable.
truly terrible but at least they're attempting something interesting also why is the mixing so gross
It was alright. I feel like they have way better stuff than this? More blues inspired than I realised. There wasn’t a song I hated and I LOVED Passive Manipulation, Meg rocks. Fine album.
This my second album of theirs - White Blood Cells was first - which I quite liked, it was a strong 3, so I rated it a 4; I just rounded up. I'm not sure what they did since that album to this one but this one fell off a giant cliff after "Blue Orchid." I feel like Jack White's voice got more squeaky and fragil-sounding, which I feel impacted my listening experience. The instrumentation was quite lacking except for "Blue Orchid" and "Red Rain" which also contributed. Highlight Song/s: "Blue Orchid"
Rating: 5/10 So weird and unnecessary that this White Stripes album is here. This has to be their worst one, it’s like they forgot the songwriting on this collection, they drag on and don’t really do much interesting stuff, and typically don’t even rock too hard with more of a focus on bluesy piano and softer songs. It’s ok at best. Highlights are opening track Blue Orchid and The Denial Twist, if the rest of the songs were fun like this I would have enjoyed it quite a bit more
I thought I knew The White Stripes, but I realized I only know Seven Nation Army. It's like half kinda decent, half these guys accidentally made a song thirteen times in a row 4.6/10
Quite poor.
two stars for Meg White. what a drummer
Dynamics in the early aughts was a rarity. Good stuff, but mostly well trod by them by the time this was released.
....ehhh..? I didn't hate it but it's not for me. Standout: The Denial Twist • I'm Lonely (But Ain't That Lonely Yet)
Actually quite irritating
Don’t like nearly as much as icky thump
Not a fan of The White Stripes. There are other albums from this band that are more palletable.
Fine
likes: blue orchid, the denial twist, take, take, take
Given their rep, I thought I'd like it more. There's obviously a lot of musicality here, but I'm not digging White's vocal style nor the artsy tracks on the album.
Obnoxiously experimental
Good album, not great. Best two songs have the exact same backing track and you can’t convince me otherwise
Not really my vibe for the majority of it
Meh.
A real head scratcher for sure. There are a few good tracks but what on earth were they thinking with some of the vocal effects and instrumentation. Definitely not their best effort
OVERALL: I don't know what happened between White Blood Cells and this, but something went wrong. I gave WBC a 3, which I would probably increase if I could, but this feels like a clear drop off in quality. The songs here feel less connected, both as an album and as standalone songs. It's also a lot more focused on piano and blues, which I like but don't really work for the White Stripes. Blue Orchid is the clear best song here, while The Denial Twist and Red Rain are small bumps in quality. Little Ghost is so annoying that I really wanted to skip it after 30 seconds. With that said, the lyrics on this album are great. The stories told on many songs are pretty compelling and have great messages, they're just ruined by a dry or forgettable instrumental. It's not horrible, but comparing this to other albums on this list makes this look much worse. It's not getting a 3 because I think WBC is better, so unfortunately this gets a 2. SONG AVG: 6.5208333/10 PERSONAL RATING: 5.75/10 Blue Orchid: Second stripes album from this generator. I don't like the vocals, but I really enjoy the energy. Pretty simple musically, but works very well. Very intense. 9/10 The Nurse: What the fuck? How did we go from the intensity and rawness of Blue Orchid to this? The beat is so goofy and doesn't really fit their style. The marimba does not fit in at all, and the song gets worse as more instruments are introduced, especially the piano seizure. I guess it's good lyrically, and it gets a little better at the end, but I don't like it that much otherwise. 4/10 My Doorbell: Another major stylistic shift. The piano stands out, but I can't tell if I like it or not. Jack's singing is fine, and Meg's drumming is fine as well, but this track doesn't really seem like their style. Pretty catchy, though. 7/10 Forever For Her (Is Over For Me): I like the lyrics and the story, but the marimba/piano thingy sounds so out of place (not the main loud one). It's just kinda okay other than that, the chorus is nice I guess. 6.75/10 Little Ghost: This ain't it, man. I only like the lyrics, literally everything else is annoying. 2/10 The Denial Twist: I guess this is good? I like what Jack does with the lyrics, and the instrumentation is actually good this time. I guess his vocals could be a bit better, but they're fine. 8.25/10 White Moon: It's so mid. Longest 4 minute song of my life, although the lyrics are good I guess. 6/10 Instinct Blues: Literally the opposite of most of the previous songs, great musically and pretty interesting but awful lyrically. I did not need to hear Jack White tell me how much he wants to have sex. It does sound good, but the lyrics heavily limit the rating. 7.25/10 Passive Manipulation: Interlude. I guess this works well as an interlude, nice to hear what Meg's singing sounds like. I guess it could be a bit more interesting, but I probably shouldn't expect much from an interlude. INTERLUDE/10 Take, Take, Take: Nice story, but the song doesn't really have anything interesting going on. The instrumentals are solid, but pretty repetitive. You could hear like 10 seconds and know what the whole song sounds like. Carried very hard by the lyrics. 6.75/10 As Ugly As I Seem: Pretty nice ballad, I like the lyrics. It has no chorus, which is pretty interesting. The use of hand drums are fine, they work well with songs like this. The instrumental is boring, but that is to be expected for something like this. I don't know if I like it, but it's probably objectively good enough to warrant a decently good score. 7/10 Red Rain: There are parts of a good song here, whenever there are lyrics it's good, but between all the verses and bridges and stuff, not much is going on. It's still mostly good, so that's nice. 7.75/10 I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet): I guess this is a good album closer, but this is not what I think of when I think White Stripes. Once again, another song that's really good lyrically but not anything special otherwise. 6.5/10
“You’re given a flower But I guess that there’s just no pleasing you Your lip tastes sour But you think that it’s just me teasing you” I have often been unconvinced by The White Stripes. Their hits are undeniably brilliant and when they are good they are great. The same can be said of Jack White’s playing. Stellar in places but some hail him as one of the all time greats and this leaves me slightly perplexed. This album did little to change my mind. The opener “Blue Orchid” is one of the certified moments of brilliance I’m talking about. A thumping riff backed by Meg White’s exemplary drumming, and over the top of this kind of instrumental Jack White’s voice sits perfectly. Unfortunately, the album immediately begins to go awry. The guitar gives way to a more relaxed piano backing which in my opinion suits neither Meg’s drumming nor Jack’s vocals. The piano playing itself also lacks character and makes me long for the return of the distorted guitar. There are flashes where the piano works such as on “The Denial Twist” which feels much heavier and more what you would expect from a White Stripes track where the guitar is swapped out for the piano. The keys are being slapped in a more Fiona Apple-esque way and this makes for much more energy. We get a nice taste of Jack’s playing on “Instinct Blues” which comes across as quite improvisational. I may be being overly critical but it does often seem like the heavy distortion masks a lack of soul and technical ability when it comes to Jack White. He has always seemed capable of writing excellent catchy riffs but falls down a tad when it comes to anything beyond that. I really really wanted to like “Take, Take, Take” but structurally it is just all over the place in a way that I found tremendously distracting rather than it enhancing the song. Despite my criticism of the piano earlier on the album I actually quite liked the closer “I’m Lonely (But I Ain’t That Lonely Yet)”. I can’t particularly explain this, it just seemed to round everything out nicely. This is not The White Stripes’ best album by any stretch of the imagination. I much prefer “Icky Thump” and from the songs I know are on “Elephant” I would expect to enjoy that far more as well. However, it was worth listening to it to get to hear the high points and “Blue Orchid” absolutely slaps.
The second White Stripes album that I’ve listened to and unfortunately, I’m still unimpressed.
I was struggling to come up with some rationale for why this album showed up, since I don't really like Jack White. Thinking about 2005 in music, yeah, I guess this was probably pretty popular since people who liked 7 Nation Army would have propped this up. I belong to neither of those categories, so I have some difficulty in defending this album's presence on this list. I have to therefore assume the author included this on the two bases I cited before, and thus conclude that the list author continues to exhibit a lack of (a) taste, (b) interest, and (c) depth. Listening to this, I pondered: what was I listening to in the mid-2000s instead of this? Of that, what best-fit White Stripes substitute would I nominate in this album's place? In seeking my answer to that curiosity, I discovered yet another abysmal truth: Neither Tool nor Audioslave appears on this list, NOR DOES FUCKING "SONGS FOR THE DEAF". Outrageous. Go listen to Songs for the Deaf instead of this, and understand why I will now have a monumental difficulty in continuing with this project. Fuck you and your shitty taste in music, Robert Dimery.
Pa znaš šta, nije ni toliko loše koliko sam zamišljala, nisam ih nikad zapravo preslušavala, znam par hitova. 2/5, 3.5/10
It’s a 2.46 but it gave nothing
I went from unenthused to vomiting
noioso
Couldn’t get into it
Interesting ideas but I mostly wanted him to plug the guitar back in
the whiplash I experienced coming from Zeppelin 3 (good drums) to this (bad drums, and if you disagree, ya wrong). Singles were great and gave a good nostalgia buzz, the rest was fairly yite. 2.5
Naah. "Thinking about my Dolphin when they are gonna wing it" must be one of the more funny things I misheard.
No
I think satan didn't get behind them
Probably my least favourite White Stripes album and I think a definite start of the end of the band. Meg isn't a great drummer and it shows on this album as they tried to move away from their signature power sound into something more subtle. Some of that clumsy charm that carried through the first few albums started to wear off a little.
Not typically my favorite genre of music. Enjoyed some songs in the moment and some I was just waiting for to be over. Felt slow and repetitive. Probably won’t listen to again Tops songs: Blue orchid Take take take Skips: The nurse My doorbell Little ghost
I find an entire album of The White Stripes too much, I don't mind the individual tracks but as a whole I'm not really into it. 4/10
Not my taste, did not feel thought through
So whatever the White Stripes had going that made me love Elephant so much, this ain’t it. I respect the idea to go into a different direction coming off of Elephant. But did it have to be this? It feels like they shifted way too much into the blues rock territory, and what the fuck is with the marimba? Most of the songs feel annoying to me, which never really was the case with Jack White. Half the time, I’d check how much time a song had left and it would be only halfway. I hope to God this was a weird one-off, because this was very disappointing. Favorite track: Blue Orchid Other hits: The Nurse, Take,Take,Take, I’m Lonely (But I Ain’t That Lonely Yet)
Tyvärr mycket tråkigare än elephant. Ett par bangers
2.3
Millennial rock, not my thing.
Shouldn’t be on here when compared to their other albums. Some pretty forgettable numbers in here, but a couple good songs: Denial Twist is a standout, and so is white moon. I also think My Doorbell is fun and kind of like their early stuff.
A little disappointed by this one. I really thought I was gonna enjoy it more but found it just okay. Parts reminded me of Physical Graffiti, last song sounded like Black Sabbath’s rendition of Changes.
Not biggest fan of white stripes but good I guess?
Old style! Starts out as a 4.
Best: "My Doorbell" Worst: "The Nurse"
Honestly, it was fine? Not a big fan, but didn't hate it. No takeaways
Never really cared for the White Stripes. Jack's voice grates on me. This album's no different.
it feels very empty
Track 1 started on a positive note, downhill from there.
Didn’t really enjoy it. I like some White Strips songs but they weren’t on this album. However, I really enjoyed “I’m lonely, but I ain’t that lonely yet”. If you like this genre I’m sure you’ll enjoy it, but it wasn’t for me.
Hva faen er The Nurse? Drepte momentet helt fra åpneren. Helt ålreit ellers, var nære å skippe et par av sangene her. Syntes de mangler noe i lydbildet i og med at de bare har to instrumenter av gangen, men det er sikkert litt smak og behag.
For me, this album contains interesting material that needed a lot more work to be ready for release These sound like demo sessions where ideas are simply being thrown out for consideration, rather than for our listening pleasure
Rating: 5/10 Was not feeling this one, sounds like more of the same thing they always do but watered down.
OK - I don't get it - a lot of quirky music with the production values of a lousy garage band.
This is the second White Stripes album I’ve encountered on the 1001 Albums list, and I’m finding them increasingly hard to enjoy. Overall, Get Behind Me Satan feels fairly boring, lacking the energy or inventiveness I’d hoped for. “My Doorbell” stands out as a fun, catchy moment, but it’s not enough to lift the album as a whole. What I’ve realised is that my main issue with the White Stripes is Jack White’s voice—it grates on me in a way I didn’t expect, especially considering I’m a fan of Opeth, whose vocals are far more extreme. It’s not the rawness or pitch, but something about the delivery that just doesn’t sit right.
The opening track is a banger even though i’m not a fan of Meg White’s drumming. There’s a stripped back quality to this that makes me wonder if i could set up a four track and produce something - in terms of production quality maybe. The album is mostly carried by Jack White’s singing. Some good tracks, some meh.
Meh not bad but not my fav
Mouais je suis pas fan du style en fait je croi
Novel sound. Cool to hear the marimba in this context
This is boring :(
yeah i dont know why this is on here... this is their worst album by a good amount, i think the other 2 albums already here (white blood cells and elephant) are the only 2 needed ones, if there had to be a 3rd it should have been icky thump, not this mediocre boring album
never been my thing but go off
Maybe a 5/10. Give it a generous 3/5 Track 2 sounds like the rug rats theme tune
I listened to it and it was ok? I guess? Just makes me feel absolutely nothing. My only standout was Instinct Blues which I didn't quite like that much.
Getting flashbacks to listening to Blur's self-titled album here because the White Stripes are also a band that I could only have named one song by ("Seven Nation Army") before today and I'm once again starting my journey into their discography with a mid-career album that I feel like I'm missing some context on. I can imagine that either White Blood Cells or Elephant probably would have been a better place to start, but hey... can't win 'em all! From the opening moments of Get Behind Me Satan, it was obvious that this album wasn't going to be for me. The vocals on "Blue Orchid" are so grating and the instrumental is fast yet fairly straightforward – it just doesn't come together in a satisfying way to me. I had similar feelings about the rest of the album, though there were a few key moments that stood out (which I'll detail below). The Nurse: This song is composed in such a funny way – genuinely gives me a similar sensation to listening to 100 gecs (and GBMS came out like 12 years before they were even a thing). Little Ghost: A fun little dip into bluegrass! Still not really into the vocal style on this album, but I feel like it works better here than on other tracks. Apparently Jack White wrote it in 10 minutes at a friend's house, which checks out. The Denial Twist: This is the kind of music I actually expected to hear on a White Stripes album and it's not bad! I could see myself coming back to this track from time to time. I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet): A stripped-back, emotional closer to the album. I wish it was capping off something I enjoyed more, but I can appreciate it for what it is. I'd be interested in hearing the first take with the mandolin and drums included. Highlights: The Nurse, Little Ghost, The Denial Twist, I’m Lonely (But I Ain’t That Lonely Yet)
Boring, frontloaded, bad mix (sounds flat)
One White Stripes album, I can understand that. But three? That's plain ridiculous!
- not what I would consider the best of the White Stripes' career. the one thing I knew about the band growing up was "whoa, they don't have a bassist!", but putting the guitar in a bass role while making the piano the main instrument in more than one song here just isn't it. the guitar doesn't function well as a bass tone-wise, and the fact that there's a vocal doubling effect in some songs just doesn't sound like it has the same spirit as their other music - I heard the marimba (vibraphone? unsure) pop up in one song and thought it was a nice surprise, but then when it came up again in the very next one, I thought "oh, I guess this the new gimmick for this album" (it did indeed pop up a few more times) - the lyrics were fun, though; "Little Ghost" felt like something out of Adventure Time that Finn might sing. I enjoy the whimsicality of the White Stripes' discography in general, and it seems especially present here, but it comes across as less participatory and not as sing-along-able as White Blood Cells or their other efforts to me
I'm bored. Maybe the simple arrangements could be forgiven if there were any substance to the lyrics, but there isn't.
nah
this was... fine. i feel like it was really daring in a lot of ways, but also a series of unfinished ideas.
Started off strong, but that dropped down right after that.
MULTIPLE White Stripes albums??? Are you kidding me???
A few good moments, but not an exciting album really. And from a brilliant band, what can ya do.
Not for me. Expected more from white stripes but you can’t win em all
Very white stripesy- sounds good in headphones but not sure about the content
i want to like The White Stripes, but they just don't do it for me. It may be the leads voice or the genre itself, I'm not sure. The first two songs were fun and full of energy, but the rest of the album felt meh. I found myself liking parts of some songs, but they were missing something that kept me from giving it a like.
found this vaguely annoying. i just don’t find the added instrumentation interesting and this is not a hot take, but jack whites voice is so whiny. 2/5
I have to say, I do respect, yak, white and his musical prowess.I'm a rack and tears listener. However, this is where the white stripes really just outstayed their welcome.I mean, it's called garage rock.Revival, and you revived it like five years before this.So what's there left to revive? You're still doing the same loud punchy things.I mean, I do like the doorbell song.I think it's fun and an interesting concept. But the rest gets a little same
Nicht meins
Fine garage rock, doesn't grip me. 5/10
Disjointed
Is this really gonna be another album where the first song is a giga rager and the rest is abyssmal dogshit? Well not abyssmal dogshit but not good I guess
Too many songs feel like pastiches of better artists' songs: I hear Paul McCartney, (lots of) Led Zeppelin, and even Tom Waits- lending the record an identity crisis. Just go full alt rock, or full blues, or full "marimba rock" or whatever those first few songs were. Blue Orchid makes for a great opener, though. This is ultimately Greta Van Fleet-core with better production.
White Stripes have always been one of those bands i like the singles of, but not them more generally. I really like Jack White’s solo stuff and his work with the Raconteurs, but just not the White Stripes. I’ve suspected my issue is Meg’s drumming and this confirms that view. She makes the majority of the songs sound the same, which is why other than the singles ‘As Ugly As I Seem’ and to some extent ‘red rain’ (although the drumming nearly ruins the latter) due to her more limited contribution .
Great album name and short, snappy songs, but that’s about the height of the positives I have about this album. At least 3 of those songs sounded the same, and I don’t mean “had the same vibes” - I’m saying they were a literal copy and paste job between tracks. You’re not an actual garage band; you are literal Grammy winners. Come on, now. I have also never understood what there is to like about Meg White’s drumming but it does give hope to us all that we, too, can become actual Grammy winning rockstars.
Figured they would have more bangers considering how popular 7 nation army is...
I’ve never really listened to the White Stripes, but know a series of people who like them. And since Seven Nation Army is an excellent song, I was interested to see how this was. Unfortunately, I was pretty disappointed with this album. The songs are pretty simple with limited hooks. The singing is below par. I read that it cost less than $10k to produce this record and it shows. A subpar effort.
There’s something a bit irritating about this album. For the first few tracks, I even start to fear it’ll become contagious; I’ll take my earbuds out, greet a colleague, and immediately get punched in the face on account of how fucking obnoxious I am. It isn’t the guitar tone, which is often exquisitely produced. It isn’t the drums, which do that disarmingly simple thing they always do on White Stripes records and always pretty much rule. It isn’t even necessarily Jack White’s voice which is… no, it’s that. Anyway, pettiness aside, we can forgive him. Once you open up to it, this is a perfectly OK album. There’s most of the usual White Stripes stuff, just nothing as energetic or iconic as on previous records. Really, if I’m being harsh, it sounds a bit like Jack and Meg are themselves beginning to bore of being White Stripes by the time “Passive Manipulation” – are those lyrics saying what I think they’re saying? – and “Take, Take, Take” roll around. Anyway, not to worry – this record still probably sold about a billion units, and helped deliver us into a truly dreadful era of shit “Blue Orchid” inspired arena friendly blues n’roll bullshit. On reflection, turns out it was contagious after all.
Not for me i think
Not a fan of the vocals or the way the songs end so abruptly. The songs don't tie in well together. It doesn't feel like a collection of songs that belong together
- Verassend plezant - 2 nummers toegevoegd aan MMMM
They were in decline by this point.
Get Behind Me Satan feels like The White Stripes got bored and threw together a weird mix of ideas that’s hit or miss at best
iha ok
Ja da hanis eigentlich scho immer gwüsst: Kei "seven nation army" kein Timon. Selberschuld. Irgendwie au komisch wie d band vomene weltwiite banger eigentlich doch nur e recht durchschnittlichi biz-rock-biz-indie-biz-irgendwas-band isch. Irgendenwas het mi irgendwie gnervt, weiss aber selber ned genau was. Darum "two nation timon" - ab is Bett!
Not a bad album, the instrumentation is quite intiguing with a mix of very different sounds that sometimes go surprisingly well together, but sometimes fall flat. I don’t care much for the singing, which feels like generic pop (or pop-country) to me. Lyrics are super boring. The guitar is nice though, too bad they don’t use it more often ! And the blues parts (like Insting Blues) were definitely more exciting. An interesting experiment that unfortunately shows the inherent limitations of duo formations – it lacks in depth and complexity, and I think they would have really benefited from a third musician. Not something I’d listen to again, but I’ll give them a 2,5* for effort and originality.
The opening track was great! The rest was pretty dire
seemed more subdued than white stripes more popular songs. Jack White gives it his all, caterwauling all over the place. I appreciate the passion. The production didn’t do anything for me though. Not my cup of tea
Wasn't my favorite, Jack White's voice was annoying me and some of the songs felt really annoying outside of Jack White.
Came in with no expectations, and couldn't find any tracks to latch onto.
It’s really not my style of music but there were some tunes that I liked
Definitely some catchy bits here but not really my style
It has such a great start and then it keeps going down. Blue Orchid and My doorbell save the album.
Turns out minimalist watered down blues rock still isn’t my thing.
Didn't care for it, not my preferred music choice.
Not a favorite of mine but listenable for the most part.
This one felt pretty mailed in. Either he wrote this in a couple weeks or the well ran dry. I do enjoy the arrangements more so than on their earlier records. As I've said, I felt they leaned on the novelty of not having a bass or other instruments a bit. On the first few tracks having the piano and bass is additive. He's got a pretty good guitar sound on a lot of this.
Sounds like Jack white ran out of ideas on this album, and Meg doesn’t have the chops to help him out. You can really hear her lack of contributions here, as every song has the same basic, repetitive, and straightforward beat with very little variation. I suppose that could be that the songs themselves were written that way, but they still could have been vastly improved by a band member with some actual input. Either way after blue orchid and my doorbell, the rest of the songs are pretty workmanlike and dull. Sort of feels like watching LeBron in like 2008 with the cavs. Impressive what he could accomplish by himself, but it was time to get some better teammates if he wanted to have a real shot at the chip.
Boring honestly. 2/5
Doesn't stand the test of time. Belongs back in 2005
I came in with hope. It left around track two.
I really like the hits in this album. The rest of it is so forgettable that I had to go back and re-listen to some of the 2nd half of the album. I'm all for White Stripes, but why THIS album on this list?
I like a few songs, but the album becomes really samie after a while.
I was into it here and there. Was that country? I did not even know Satan was addressed.
It didn’t click for me, maybe I needed more sonic cohesion. 2.5/5
I thought this might be good at one point and then it wasn’t
The Hardest Button to Button (jk not hard at all)
3/10
Blue Orchid is fun. LOVING the 'Under the Sea' sound off The Nurse. My Doorbell and Forever For Her isn't bad. Little Ghost is fun - I like their duet whimsical ones. As Ugly As I Seem is good. I'm Lonely is good - funny lyrics too. The rest are alright.
Started strong then turned abysmal.
I think it was ok
Нет, не интересно, иногда даже раздражает
Meh, not really for me.
I like the white stripes but this albums pretty mid
the white stripes are kinda bland sadly
2.5
feels so painfully millenial i might open a burger restaurant with exposed brick wall and metal furniture.
Ugh
Kept waiting for Seven Nation Army that never came (idk any other white stripes music). It was okay I guess
As with most White Stripes stuff, this album leaves me kinda cold. I don't mind it, but it doesn't really do anything for me. I know Jack has a reputation for being experimental, and I would normally like that, but it feels on the ordinary side of experimental.
Eh
Meh.
Pues nose, no me aportó nada. Tienen un sonido unico y reconocible. El hecho de que sean un dúo tiene merito, pero al mismo tiempo hace que suene todo muy seco nose. La producción es bastante mala, especialmente en las baterías y no me gusta especialmente como canta. Destaca "As ugly as i seem". Subjetivamente no me gustó mucho y objetivamente tiene puntos buenos y malos. 5/10
Surprisingly did not like this much at all. I normale quite enjoy anything Jack White, but the marimba and weird choices in songs caught me off guard constantly in a negative way. You can still appreciate the talent, but it's not for me
I liked some of the White Stripes stuff growing up, but this album was pretty disappointing to me. I like the first song and the last song, but the rest was “meh” at best.
Ngl. I was falling asleep.
This album felt a bit like one extremely long song that meandered around until it finally ended. I didn't really enjoy it, so it gets 2 stars.
Never liked them, still don't.
There are great tracks on this album but I found a the transitions jarring. A glam rock power house start gives way to a a-tonal song that I'm not sure has an end. Then what follows is a fun series of rock/folk/punk tracks that I'm not sure count as any thing more than high fidelity experiments. 3 stand out tracks. I'd have kept the three good tracks and the finale and kept working. Blue Orchid, My Doorbell and The Denial Twist plus I'm Lonley as it's a solid answer to a question that wasn't quite asked.
This is not what I was expecting from a White Stripes album. Most of these songs felt like unfinished demo tracks. Why did they decide to put a xylophone/marimba on so many songs??? A couple of good White Stripes classics, but overall I was disappointed.
Okay. Not a popular take, but this record is not my jam. A couple of high notes, but overall, pretty meh. He rebounded like a mother, though.
(meme of me pointing at a pic of Jack White) I've had enough of this guy
This sounds like it was recorded in a toilet. It's an interesting departure from the usual meat 'n' two veg of The White Stripes. But I think they work best with a back to basics approach.
-ehhh, didnt love it
Really did not care for the instrumentals on here.
ykw i didn't like this as much as I should, just based on whatever else I listen to. I didn't hate it per se but I don't think I'll be coming back to this one. dare I say it was a touch gimmicky? outrageous I know coming from ME but maybe if I discovered this 10 years ago and formed an emotional attachment to it then, this would be a very different review but alas here we are.
Not my favourite offering from Jack White. Some decent rock tracks but also has a tendency towards quite cutesy songs that sound like they should be in a children's programme. Also some tracks where it's a single hook that gets over repeated.
Didn't do it for me
I appreciate that they tried a new sound with this album, but this was just not for me.
I tried, honestly I did. Just not for me.
Big mix - marimba, and rock, and ballad and soulful piano? Lots of intention behind this, but it’s a little bland in terms of rhythm consistency and I’m not a big fan of the vocals. Anywho, 2/5.
I really thought I liked this but NO, I really don't. it isn't what I remember and I only got through 3 or 4 songs. I'd have it as a 1 star but kept one because at some point I did enjoy.
uhm once again an album started off great and then fell off for me. really weird. just odd. got really intense randomly and it just didn’t hit for me. i don’t get why there this but there’s no dave matthews band on this list at all.
first song was fun but it got really annoying after that
Not for me - I can't get past the squeaky voice and the terrible drumming.
I didn’t hate this album as much as I thought I would! I didn’t recognize any of the songs and I probably wouldn’t ever listen to it again, but it wasn’t too bad.
The White Stripes have made some great songs, but they're not on this record.
Wanted to like this more than I did but it was underwhelming overall
1-2 good songs, not enjoyable as a whole
I didn't like this one that much. Jack White's squirrely voice can be something that sets his music apart from the rest or makes me want to never hear him again. "The Nurse" was an interesting narrative exploration but a terrible song. "Little Ghost" is one of the worst songs we've had to get through in this entire album project. The second half of this album is thankfully much tighter. "Instinct Blues" and " Take, Take, Take" were my favorites with "Red Rain" being a nice piano ballad and witch up too.
The first song was incredible, the thundering guitars really struck me, but it didn’t keep the energy, and managed to fail at their different approach
Not my favorite album of theirs. 2/5
Not my type, however decent album
not my thing
White stripes without 7 nation army? What!? I kid, it's nice to see an album from a band that for most is a one hit wonder. That said, this album was not for me. I wouldn't choose to put this on.
2 Stars (5/15)
The novelty had worn off for me by this point to be honest - White Blood Cells was definitely the peak for Jack and Meg in my opinion. There are highlights, and when it grooves it still sounds as good as The White Stripes have ever sounded. In the end though, the self-inflicted manifesto that set them apart from the crowd early in their career only offers diminishing returns here and the attempts to branch out with more varied instrumentation only highlights the limitations of the punk-blues jam format.
A very unique sound that is not for me
it was okay
Meh! 2/5
In the goal of constant reinvention, they forgot to write good songs
I like the White Stripes, but they’ve always been kind of quirky and weird. This album is especially hit or miss. Some tracks I really like, and others left me saying to myself “what the hell was that?”. Overall it was ok. Maybe I’m just a greatest hits kind of guy when it comes to them.
Hmm. At best, two White Stripes albums should be on this list. Probably not this one. God, My Doorbell is an annoying song. Strong memories of turning the radio off whenever Colin and Edith played it on Radio 1. Most other songs are just boring.
Overall opinion: Meh. I mean..the album had some interesting sounds/instruments that i haven’t heard a lot in other albums, but it was lacking a lot. Just meh. The only song in the album I actually enjoyed and wasn’t waiting for to finish was as ugly as I seem, I didn’t mind that one.
I like this even less than their other albums on here.
Little underwhelming, I love jack white but this one didn't quite do it for me. Not many memorable songs, but still fun. There are other albums I would put over this one for the white stripes/jack white
Nope don't need to listen this before you die. Maybe 2 good songs.
I don’t know how else to describe it besides it sounded like a middle school blues band. Love the white stripes but this wasn’t it for me.
jack white and the white stripes make shitty music that’s unpleasant to listen to. probably my biggest qualm about this list is how much i’ve had to listen to these people
holy shit they made the song from paranorman. my little sister was really scared of the song little ghost so when we got to the credits of that movie she'd lose her shit for some reason. she must been scared of mediocre music, idk i wasn't feeling this one. not bad just whatever
This album was just not for me. I was more confused the whole time rather than enjoying it. ;(
I like the acoustic tracks, but the rest left me cold
It is fine but definitely not essential listening.
Unique
I criticised Elephant for being too simplistic. This one if far from that in all fairness. But that doesn't make it better. Like Elephant, the slower songs are the weaker ones, which seems to make up a majority of the album. Some stuff was catchy, sure, but it wasn't anything special. Blue Orchid on this album is what Seven Nation Army is on Elephant. It sets such a high standard for the rest of the album that the rest of the songs just are nowhere near. I appreciate the variety of the songs, and I'm all for experimentation, but this wasn't it.
I know and like the first song, but apart from that this is an average, not that great rock album... It sounds very flat. Is it because of the production? Or because there is no bass? It feels like something is missing
Okay, this is a very mixed album for me. It has some great songs; next to that also a lot of songs I would normally skip. In the end, it will not be added to my recommended albums I would advice to friends.
They're one of those bands that you think you SHOULD like because they're cool....but whenever I try to listen to them I'm bored. It's a sloppy album, and they are not strong vocalists. I can hear other artists' influence on THEM but I fail to hear their influence on others.
What ???
eh
Repetitive crash/bang neo-garage rock. It's fine, I guess, but doesn't really do much. Never really understood the Jack White obsession. Feels uninspired. Couldn't wait for it to be over. Not for me.
To me, this sounds more like half finished ideas than a complete album. Maybe that's what they're going for. It's an album of song pitches.
Not a huge white stripes fan. But there were some good songs in an overall forgettable package.
По мнению А: 3/5 По мнению С: 2/5 ИТОГОВАЯ ОЦЕНКА: 2/5 (31.01.2025)
Thought I'd like it, but no.
Meh. Would have been quite content never listening to this album. 2 stars given for the noughties indie club scene nostalgia that Blue Orchid and My Doorbell bring.
Found it somewhat reductive compared to earlier and later garage rock.
Ok
Sinänsä kiinnostava instrumentaatio ja ihan ok biisejä, mutta ei vaan tunnu missään kohtaa "lähtevän". 2/5
Completely unknown band. Some nice surprises sound wise. Weird in other ways. I managed to listen to the whole album. It was OK.
Started somewhat strong, but became stale pretty fast. The White Stripes just aren't my jam. 2/5
I like listening to Jack White talk about music…
говно, только норм первый трек из гитар хиро 5
The first part was solid, the B-side less so.
Just not a jack white guy
Ick. I don’t like this at all. No energy to elaborate.
It was not for me. Very weird and not in the way I like.
Know this one too. Some decent tunes here, but big dropoff from the three that came before it: Elephant, White Blood Cells, and De Stijl
Not my thing
Out on the stripes. I'm OUT
Still stripped down to the basics like their other stuff. I'm having trouble loving this album, though. Not as good as their other efforts. If I hadn't known it was the White Stripes, I would have turned it off sooner.
I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet).
Fácil y sencillo para toda la familia
It's hard to pinpoint exactly where it went wrong but I did not enjoy this one. The album cover is also terrible. Favorites: The Denial Twist Least Favorites: The Nurse, Little Ghost
Nothing to offend. Nothing to excite. 2* is harsh but I want something to revisit if I give 3.
Bought this at the time and remember being disappointed. Few good songs but the rest of it is poor.
The Shite Stripes
not bad but about half way through I was kind of bored with it
Jack White really does seem to think he’s better than he actually is. A long way short of the White Stripes best.
Blue Orchid, Denial Twist, and Red Rain are great, rest are kinda meh
meh
I didn't really care for this like I did the other one we listened to.
Wasn't a bad album but man it took me three days to get through this so I dunno what to rank it as. 3 for being mid? 1 for taking three days? Middle ground it is
sounds like pop indie
Blues rock sounds that you've come to expect from The White Stripes. Not my favourite, but still not bad. I can see this being hard to listen to, if you don't already like Jack White or The White Stripes.
I was fully expecting this to be a drawn-out celebration of all that is mediocre in rock. And about half of it was. The other half, however, teeter-tottered between above-average enjoyable blues rock numbers and other songs that made me genuinely question; A: if they were genuinely songs that the Whites thought were worthy of releasing, or if they were satirisations of themselves, or B: if any self-proclaimed ‘fans’ of this band could genuinely unironically say they liked them. Besides these few songs that baffled me, e.g. “The Nurse”, it was for the most part what I outlined. The most mid-2000s chart-topping attempts at rock possible.
Some good songs but different for me than i expected
I stopped listening to The White Stripes after Seven Nation Army song hit so hard it was everywhere. I loved the first few albums by the White Stripes but as they became more produced the sound became more classic blues rock vs. sparse garage rock. A subtle distinction. That said, I did really like some of the less well known tunes on this album. And Meg White is a treasure -- seriously her drumming and singing is the best. If they removed the two massive hits (Blue Orchid and My Doorbell) I would listen a lot more. (I think Jack White got high and was waiting for pizza to be delivered when he wrote the Doorbell song.) Blue Orchid is far too overplayed at this point which can ruin any good song.
Far more shit then I remember it being :(
One or two songs aside, I’m convinced that anyone with a weeks practice with a guitar, a piano, plus a bottle of Jim Beam could get pretty close to the producing a similar work.
What an oddball album ....maybe the word to use is eccentric? I've never really listened to a White Stripes album, but there are some cool sounds on it. The music is kind of all over the place feel wise. It's not that I disliked it,.but it seems like the kind of album that would need some time to grow on you.
I've always been pretty hot and cold with Jack White and his musical escapades. I've found that I don't really care for his style of blues-rock (or any blues-rock for that matter) and most of his works have 1 or 2 good tracks a piece. Get Behind Me Satan falls right in line with my opinion and didn't do anything to change it. Blue Orchid and My Doorbell are the only songs I truly enjoy without any sort of rationalizing. 2
Gonna let you in on a little secret: when it came to the great color-coded blues rock duo rivalry, I prefer the Black Keys. That isn't to say I don't like the White Stripes either though. If anything, they have a "rawer" sound that's a bit less informed by psychedelic soul and Led Zeppelin and a bit more informed by classic garage rock, mod i.e. classic Who, etc. They're both at the top of the genre in their respective era, but I listen to them for two very different things. That being said, this is the most perplexing addition to the list so far. Every song (besides the incredible opener Blue Orchid) sounds like a minor variation of the exact same song. It's so forgettable compared to White Blood Cells or Elephant with nary a standout track. I'm on the ropes here, it's not particularly awful but it sets a high bar at the start and IMMEDIATELY disappoints. Unfortunate start to the hard rock selection of the list. 5/10
Rock, but kind of covers a broad genre - some is folksy, others are experimental or harder rock, ballad, but none of it is my thing
Vocally I want to die. I don't like it that much so far. Instrumentally it's decent enough. Didn't like.
This is the third White Stripes album in the list. Please don’t force me to listen to any more of Meg’s drumming. A big plus that she actually isn’t doing a lot of drumming on this one, but at the same time it’s definitely not Jack White’s songwriting at his strongest.
On paper I should love the white stripes, but I do not. I've listened to this and I think it's because I don't like Jake Whites singing style, or just his voice, on little ghost it's an unbearable country style. The best track for me is passive manipulation, the throwaway song that Meg sings.
