iconico, avrei dovuto ascoltarlo per intero prima. tra metal e melodie, anche testi profondi e tecnica elaborata.
Classic metal album. Intoxicating and energetic. It's songs are all powerful and incite you to move.
I like this album
This is a solid offering from Metallica. Thrash gem.
Play some fuckin SLAYERRRRR!
Metallica has great advantage over other heavy metal bands. And it's pretty simple. James Hetfield can sing with a clear voice. You can hear it on this album. He does it with ease. You can hear what he is siniging, instead of the usual heavy metal vocals. It turns the perfomance in the great direction. Add the original guitar riffs. Boom. You get a great album and one of the greatest metal bands in the history overall.
My dad listened to a lot of Metallica when I was growing up.. Things like Alice in Chains, Metallica, Even some early Kid Rock (lol I know) was on often in the garage as he worked on bikes.. Now of course I have listened to Master of Puppets before but I never really gave Metallica my full time of day. As a teen I loved metal like Slipknot and as a young adult I was more into bands like Power Trip or Loathe.. So relistening to Master of Puppets as a complete work, I was reminded how sick this band really is.. I won't get into a full review of each track that I loved on this album but my favorite song on this album is 'The Thing That Should Not Be'.. It starts with a slow build but quickly you're led into this buzzsaw power metal riff that you just want to start moving to. My one gripe with this album is I don't find it as replayable as some other albums.. Once I've listened through once, I feel satisfied for awhile.. anyways, I love this track. I love this album. I love Metallica. Some of the greatest metal of all time for sure. Overall: 4.4/5
Disposable Heroes is magically manic, complete with fake finish. Hammett's solo is also quite musical instead of his usual jarring speedshow. A bit more light and shade and a bit less Orion would give this 5 stars.
Staple of my late teens
Classic Metallica. Not my favorite of theirs, probably top 3. their best sounding album of the 80's
Not a fan of Metallica but there are bops on here for sure.
A classic metal album. Metal is a very hit or miss for me. But, I gotta say..there was very little wrong with this album. It's nostalgic, there are a bit parts where it's a little bland, but I don't think it affects the album to say it's bad.
Is this or "... And Justice for All" the best Album?
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. I've been all over the place with Metallica on this list but this one I liked. Or maybe I was just in the right mood for it.
It's interesting to listen to this now. It's been a long time. In my brain, the vocals aren't nearly as sludgy as they are on this recording. I don't know if it's the difference of equipment, or if the CD is mixed very differently, or what. I'm fairly sure my main way of listening to this album was on cassette and it was a portable system, nothing fancy and the system I have now is definitely light years better. The songwriting is strong, and they definitely tapped into something that wasn't in the forefront of metal at the time. Faster tempos, more sophisticated topics. I would never have suspected that the title track would make a monster comeback 35+ years later... I do think this is my favorite Metallica album, though it's a lot less clearly mixed listening to it now than it is in memories in my brain LOL
I'd give it five! But reality is - 5 should be for those albums I'll Love Love which is only my own music taste... this is a AGREAT album! Amazing drumming and guitar.... just Love it. Not a huge fan of his voice tho... :[
Some of their best. Opening with Battery and MOP is a great way to bring the heat
Good
I didn't get around to this until later in life. As I get older, this one gets better.
I grew up listening to this album. It was up there with Ride the Lightning in how different it was. Changed the face of heavy metal.
I'm more surprised that it took me so long to listen to this album in its entirety
Impeccable rhythmically. It's crazy how humans have come such a long way musically, that's possible to create this. Especially heavy powerful playing. I like the theme of the abuse of power. So well executed.
Good metal music
Metal that feels solid to this non-metal fan
Bangerz
good thrash metal classic album, aged very well and is still a banger.
Legendary album for a reason. This era of heavy metal was such an apex for the genre, it was just so full of epic symphonic progression that keeps the energy building and changing 4.5/5
I thought Megadeth had some sweet rifts but this was even better. I was boopin and boppin
Not normally my thing but really enjoyed
A timeless album that is still headbanging worthy.

No review needed.
I loved it! Doesn’t maintain the pacing as good as some of their other albums but it is unapologetically aggressive throughout
Amazing album, fantastic instrumentals and voice performances, but I don’t really care for the lyrics, and the songs could drag on for a little too long. But those flaws are overshadowed by their pros. 8/10
Awesome record. Have loved forever. Still goes hard.
F’ing Metallica! I’m not very much into this kind of music anymore but they always have been the exception! Standouts: Master of Puppets, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Others: Battery, Damage Inc.,The Things That Should Not Be, Disposable Heroes, Orion,
Love love love...all of it.
Fun album, it feels like very melodic metal. 4/5
Never listened to this album before. Good all around. Wish they still sounded like this.
the album was pretty good. i listened to it with my dad. i don’t think he liked it too much 😭 my favorite songs were “Master of Puppets,” “The Thing That Should Not Be,” “Welcome Home (Sanitarium),” and “Orion.”
Peak Metallica imo
Finally some REAL music. Middle school boys RISE UP!
Never actually listened to this front to back, which is a cardinal sin for any metalhead. Really enjoyed it though, Metallica are at their best when they're experimenting and having fun. Orion really demonstrates that
Pure Metallica. The title track is worth the price of the album by itself.
Can’t go wrong wrong with the OG metallicas
Really good great piano and drums and vocals 100% would listen again
I WAS BORN FOR DYINGGGG!!!1
9/10
Classic album! Title track is obviously the star of the show here. That song alone has inspired many! Opening track opens great, but kind of fizzles once it comes in. Overall really classic 80's Metallica. I think I like Ride the Lightning a tad more... Probably a 3.5 though, I'll round up.
It starts with my all-time favorite Metallica song: BATTERY!! Great album, have been hearing it a lot of times during my younger years, as I had many hard-rock fans among my friends.
Nostalgia
I think this album is a little overshadowed by And Justice For All. For some good reason, but Master of Puppets has a lot to offer. This was the loudest shit available at the time. That's gotta count for something.
I'm not a huge metal fan but I can dig some Metallica. This has some real heaviness but with musicianship missing from some of the more terrible death and thrash metal. "Master of Puppets" is the albums star and with the pointless and seemingly endless war in Ukraine raging "Disposable Heroes" is as poignant as ever. Orion also was pretty good
Not really into metal but this was just objectively an excellently crafted album. I’d obviously heard of it before but this was my first time actually listening to Metallica, and I was pleasantly surprised. Pretty good!
Muy pesado, tiene su jugo pero para darle más puntaje necesito escucharlo un poco más
Master of Puppets is the third album by American heavy metal band Metallica. It received widespread acclaim and is considered one of the greatest metal albums of all time, as well as being a cornerstone of the thrash metal scene. It is certified 6 times platinum in the US and was the first metal album to be added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress for being culturally/historically/aesthetically significant. This important thrash metal album is a banger - no question about it. Even if you're not a fan of metal music, Master of Puppets will have you headbanging along to the rocking drums and shocking guitar riffs. It's an awesome album that I think everyone should listen to!
i almost skipped this because i never thought metallica were half as heavy as they were supposed to be but this record kicks ass and i'm not afraid to say i was wrong
Ja ha haft stark antipati mot metallica sen klassiska skivan men dehä va nog banger
Some real good stuff in there. Totally my style.
AJ: sooo I’ve listened to Metallica the same way I started with Pearl Jam. I didn’t listen to albums right away besides Ten and The Black Album. I liked a couple tunes on Ride the Lightning before my mom threw it away. But through radio and live albums I heard a lot of both of their popular songs. So hearing Master of Puppets as the second song on an album instead of a car chase montage is really cool. Never knew it was 8+ minutes! Crazy assholes. So heavy, so fast, but so tight. Fuck Lars. 🤘🏻 Cat: pure gasoline. Just epic shit. The guitar harmonies, the time changes, all masterful and legendary.
3.5 i respect what metallica did for the genre and i liked this a lot more than i expected i would. however i would still rather listen to the bands they inspired. a very solid start though.
Super happy to see this pick today.
Good
Metallica is pretty cool, but might not be for me
This album is a masterpiece of thrash metal and most likely edges out "And Justice for All" as my favorite Metallica album. The overall tone is dark and ominous that successfully mixes in-your-face thrash with melodic instrumentation to give the album a generally complex sound. Favorite Song - Orion, Master of Puppets, Welcome Home (Sanitarium) Least Favorite Song - The Thing That Should Not Be This song was very monotonous apart from the solo No Skip Album? - No, I could see myself skipping "The Thing That Should Not Be"
Metallica - Master of Puppets Album released 3 March 1986 Genre - American Heavy Metal. First thoughts: not my type of music. But a lot of the songs surprised me. Knew of Master of Puppets from Stranger things but starting with Battery and into that was amazing. Some of the songs were a little lengthy which brought it down for me. 4/5
Favorite Song: Welcome Home (Sanatarium) There’s a reason Metallica is famous.
This was great. I've never really listened to Metallica before. It's got elements of rock from that era that I typically don't enjoy, but there's just so many bits that elevate it throughout. From those staccato like shred notes at the end of Battery, to the more operatic moments through out, something in each track stood out and roped me in. Would have been better if it leaned into some Doom, but that's the case for all music, so won't mark it down for that. Fav track: Master of puppets
Held up as a pinnacle of the genre and its not hard to see why. Hetfield's delivery is perfect for the overdramatic, grand guignol lyrics. The band employ an impressive amount of light and shade over the albums runtime, but the shreds and headbangs are where it shines. Not my go-to brand of metal and never will be, but this was a great fun listen and a perfect entry point into one of the genres most indelible bands. Fave track: Master of Puppets
One of the strongest bookends of songs we’ve had - super strong opener and closer, and everything else in between just happens to be pretty enjoyable too. Some great production and chemistry here to land some energetic and politically aggressive headbangers. I never knew I was secretly a fan of thrash metal. Fave track: Battery
listened to again not my favorite genre of metal, but i still respect the hell outta their legacy and this album is an uncontested classic
This Album was the first one I got to share with my dad. ...And justice for all was the second. This album helped me get into Metal and I'm forever grateful for them.
Brilliant album that offered many Metallica classics!
You know it’s not bad. It’s really quite good. I’ve played it three times and can enjoy listening to it. What I like: Intros and middle eights. They’ve got a good grasp of rock dynamics and know that if you have 30s of acoustic noodling/slow strumming then the crunching riffs come on even stronger. Twin guitars. Always a sucker for some double-guitar interplay. Bits of this, the best bits, sound a bit like Thin Lizzy. A good thing in my book. It’s not really thrash though is it? If it is its the slowest thrash ever. So there’s actually room for tunes, singing, musicality etc to come through. It is intense. There’s no number about a lady in a red dress to be found anywhere. Doomy lyrics. It was the eighties. Ronnie was joking around with the nuclear football, cruise missiles and the like. Not to mention the height of Thatcherism over here. So lyrics about death, destruction, madness, conscription and cannon doddering and general catastrophe are just fine. And the screaming, roaring delivery really sells it. Riffs. Huge riffs. Riffs from outer space. Riffs carved from the side of Mount Rushmore. If these riffs were an actor they’d be Brian Blessed shouting from the top of a Welsh mountain. What’s not so good. The inessential instrumental. When your other tracks are called things like Leper Messiah, The Thing That Should Not Be or Sanitorium then having an instrumental called Orion rather lets the side down. Like YYZ on Moving Pictures its the heavy metal equivalent of the hip-hop skit. Where’s the screaming? Not that it’s bad, just that it’s not really needed. They could do with an edit button. Most of the tracks clock in at the 6 minute mark which given the sound is everything up to 11 can get a little exhausting.
A fucking classic. Not my fav Metallica album (Ride is) but man...this is a top 10 album.
Almost perfect.
If not their best album, it's their second best, behind "...And Justice For All"
I guess I've gone back-and-forth on Metallica a lot. I listened to them a fair bit in the late 2000s, but hadn't touched it in 20 years. Then early in the 1001 journey, I was thinking about how music tastes could change over time, and was curious to go back and listened to some Metallica to see if I felt the same way about it as I used to. At that time I determined that I didn't like it as much as I used to. But then less than a week later the generator gifted us with Anthrax, which was clearly far worse heavy metal. Then we got Megadeth just a few weeks later, and maybe those experiences helped me understand the value of Metallica. A year later we listened to Metallica's self-titled "Black" album, and I forgot to write a review. I think I liked it, but still maybe not the way I used to. But "Master of Puppets" is the Metallica that I was looking for the whole time. This album and "Ride the Lightning" were my favorites. With the black album and their later work, I don't like the way James Hetfield uses his voice as much. Here the vocals are raw and intense, and don't try to be anything else. The drums are pounding, the guitars thrash. "Battery" is great, and then the beginning of the title track is a little lackluster, but by the time the solo half-way through "Master of Puppets" hits the band is firing on all cylinders. From there it's a sprint to the finish. It can all sound too similar at times, but it's broken up by amazing guitar solos, and the whole thing is wrapped up at track 8 before it wears out its welcome. I'll have to go check out "Ride the Lightning" again, and I guess "Metallica" too so I can fill in that missing review.
4.5 really, only not giving 5 cos don’t won’t to feel cond
Do all of the songs sound alike? Maybe, but when that sound is "greatness" who cares?
Good metal, but it overstays its welcome. If you’re looking for an all time great, I’d recommend something like Sabbath, not this.
This is the Metallica of my youth, and still top tier metal in my book. The lyrics are a little basic and the singing, while very competent, isn't much more than that. The music is impeccable though, and just a good time when I'm in this genre mood. Holds up very well.
Good tracks here but I'm not a metalhead.
Hard hitting kings of thrash are at it again with this pearler of a album. Noise with a message as it hits your eardrums that is so anti war it looks like it is putting bouquets in tank gun barrels while wearing a Tiananmen square t-shirts. A true metal classic and worth multiple listens and is going straight into my metal playlist. Favourite tracks - Master of puppets, Disposable Heroes
Much better than the black album.
Overall: 8.5'tan 9/10
This album has some great riffs and impressive guitar playing but most of the songs sound the same. The album was also dragged out way too long. This could've easily been forty minutes and it would have still had the same effect on me. With other genres I normally wouldn't have a problem with repeated riffs and chord progressions but when I'm listening to thrash or metal I want to be stimulated the entire time and not have to listen to an 8 minute instrumental song and this is coming from a big jazz fan. Every song on here is good and I would enjoy each song on it's own on separate occasions but when listening to this as a project the repetitiveness stands out to me I give this 7.5/10, would probably rate it higher after a relisten but I most likely won't for a good while.
PURO ROOOOCK!!!
I literally was complaining about all the psychedelic rock and ask for some metal. boom. I like the album didn't know they had an instrumental to be honest with you
4.0
I love the band, the album is strong but I am only a fan of individual songs and some specific solos. I am not sure how I feel about the album as a whole. Its great to hear some of Cliff Burton in these songs, and the album has a huge significant value which determined my rating despite not being a huge fan of this album specifically.
The guitar work is amazing. I honestly don't remember much else. I wouldn't put this on in every situation, but it's a good album to pump you up...or wake you up.
An all time classic
Pretty much Metallica at their peak, though I slightly prefer RtL. Well produced without being “slick,” and mature without being self-indulgent.
This is Metallica's third album, but one could argue that it was their most prolific and polished up to this point. It matched the tenacity and highs of prior efforts with their major singles, but also had a solid B-side. As a result, this became a more mainstream hit, but also made their sound that much more influential on the growing music of the time. It wasn't just loud music, but melodic and haunting.
This is not my favorite Metallica album as that would be "...and Justice for All" but this is an essential album to listen to, as this is the album that helped continue to bring the thrash metal genre more in to the mainstream. This is the album that helped set up "hardcore" Metallica fans to be disappointed with every 90's release. Even if you don't like thrash metal, this album helps set the precedent for other bands to come.
I’d been looking forward to this album since I’d never listened to it all the way through. I have to admit I’m biased toward the black album because it’s what I grew up with (which I know is heresy to some) but I can still appreciate the importance of this album. It also helps that it rocks and is both fun and heavy unlike sepultura albums. The title track is definitely the best but I also enjoyed Orion a good amount, which probably just shows my black album leanings.
Seems weird that Metallica and thrash metal peaked more than 35 years ago. I would have said almost as weird as the people who think Metallica still have a good album in them, but that latest song, Lux Æterna, was actually pretty good.
Damn I liked this a lot more than I expected! Strong guitar gets me every time
Of the big 4 thrash metal, I consider Metallica to be the most accessible, with slower, groovier riffs and memorable structures that appeal to non-metal fans the same way Black Sabbath did a decade prior. The tracks tend to be pretty diverse, showing a lot of what thrash has to offer. Besides the titular track, I wasn't too impressed by the first half's compositions, but I was really swayed in the latter half. Of course, they're all incredibly talented, and the production is clear and appropriate. Battery: A powerful opener representative of the genre with speedy power moments meshing flawlessly with a slower melodic middle section. Not a complex song and doesn't stand out from the genre, but certainly shows what thrash is about and what Metallica can do. Master of Puppets: Their doomy masterpiece that wastes no time getting into the action, full of memorable hooks and moments that keep you on the edge of your seat. The chorus is catchy and has an incredibly build up for anyone to sing to. Nearly 9 minutes and yet every second is exhilarating, composed of several distinct movements and repeating motifs. The Thing that Should Not Be: Probably the darkest and doomiest song, with vocals, bass, and lyrics reminiscent of Black Sabbath. Really awesome squeely guitar solo in the middle section. Other than that, I found most of the song to be forgettable and drawn out. Welcome Home (Sanitarium): A melodic atmospheric proggy piece that reminds me of Rush or later bands like Faith No More or Dream Theater. Pretty forgettable. Disposable Heroes: Fast, loud, and exciting but repeats itself a bit too much, working against its length. If only it were a bit shorter, I'd love it, but it's still one of my favorites. Leper Messiah: Flows well from Disposable Heroes with its speed and power and has a great bass sound. One of the highlights for sure. Orion: A jazzy and groovy instrumental piece that feels classical in its structure at times: my 2nd favorite track. Damage Inc: The fastest and technologically impressive song on the album.
ok
Great album. For being an hour long it went by really fast.
J’aime Metallica, écouté souvent Master of Puppets, Back to the Front. Le metal me met toujours de bonne humeur, et les prouesses des musiciens (guitare, drums) m’épatent
This is good. Own it.
Okay Monday morning, let's rock the fuck out then!! \m/ The title track is the gold standard template for high octane metal. It's that premium shit. The rest of the album keeps up the psychotic pace, there's not a dull moment here. Lyrically, it's so much more intense and interesting than the garden variety "hail satan, we think we're badasses" stuff you heard from a lot of other metal acts at the time. It paved the way for a bold new era of metal. The album art is very compelling too, it meshes seamlessly with the album content in such a satisfying way. Black album is the magnum opus though.
This album went hard AF with "Master of Puppets" being the obvious best song. 8/10.
Such a great album. Almost perfect
- me (a dumbass) at the beginning of this: i thought metallica was metal? then the song gets going like oh okay yeah there it is - just looking ahead at this tracklist this has a lot of 8 minute songs too like girl please don't be as repetitive as Sound of Silver i can't take that again - these songs are all blending together tbh, but i do enjoy some loud music overall impressions, out of all the albums i've gotten so far (this is #14) this is the closest to something i would listen to on the regular, but nothing specific about it really jumped out to me.
Really good album, very enjoyable
Classic
3.5/5 good but repetitive
Never listened to a Metallica album, some really good songs but they all had about three too many choruses in them and by the end of a few I was bored. Would definitely listen again mind.
Thoroughly enjoyed it. Master of Puppets was great of course, but also really enjoyed Leper Messiah.
This isn't Metallica's best album but its still pretty high up on my list. Could the album be shorter, yes. Would I want it shorter, hell no!
I've never listened to a Metallica album before.... Not forgiven the Napster debacle. Hard to not do some head banging! Enjoyed it and it was pretty much as I would have expected it to be. Very dramatic.
rtl better
Endelig nåke bra
it is good, but then
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Battery, Master of puppets, Disposable heroes
Great album, Master of Puppet and Welcome Home ( Sanitarium) are master pieces, overall I love it but I think it is quite redundant between songs, and the riffs although great kind of sound similar. Solos always do the trick but we are missing something to get higher than a 4.25
Not into this
4.4 - When I’m in the right mood, this album fucks. I especially love the title track’s guitar interlude and screaming solo.
Great Metallica album, good flow, but Battery is a hard listen
Man, I forgot how tight this band is. This album defined the heavy metal genre for the second half of the 80s. Though I don't feel like it's their best work, it really set the stage for the complete domination of the heavy metal scene. It was a staple of nearly every teenage boy in my high school. Brought back a lot of good (and bad) memories of high school for me! :)
Great metal bridge for all listeners
I've listened to this one before, didn't give it a second listen. I might another time if I have time.
This is what Metallica should sound like. Fast, loud, driving and heart and soul in every chord. This was a good one, boys.
Never been the biggest Metallica fan, but i do appreciate their work. I rarely listen to them actively, but i do not mind if they're played and i've heard most of their discography in some capacity. This album is a solid listen even if you're not the most avid fan. It does not really have any filler or bad songs in it ( unless you consider Orion as such. I can see 8+ minute instrumental being too much for some). It is not my favourite Metallica album, but i could understand why you would choose it as such
Really solid album. It’s totally my style so I can’t go all the way to a five but really enjoyed the guitar work and the drums. I’d never listened to a Metallica album and was pleasantly surprised
Brings back memories.
i can't 5 it. but this album was really great.
A classic – heavily influential. I don't know if I've ever listened to this album in its entirety before now. Title track is obviously the most well-known, but don't sleep on "Welcome Home" and "Orion".
Good ol classic Metallica.
I had two cans of Monster today, biking back and forth between our old apartment and the new house, trying to get the last of our stuff out. Heart racing, music pumping, I mean, man, I got stuff DONE today. Was it the energy drink? Was it the riffs? I still didn't understand a single lyric because Hetfield sounds the way he sounds (not as bad here, but still). Whatever it was, I was a beast today. Brutal.
One of my favorite metal albums and my favorite Metallica albums. A little repetitive towards the end, but enough songs stood out to make up for it. 4/5
Second Metallica album I’ve listened to and it was good. I’ll have to listen closer next time to the lyrics
je réécouterais un album de métal de metallica
4.25
The electric guitar parts are fun, I can see why people would like that. May have to listen to lyrics more. I will say that most songs sound the same but it’s probably my uncultured ear. The left one.
Is it Metallica's best? Possibly, yes, competing with Ride the Lightning.
While this may come as a surprise, I'm not a huge metal fan. I sure do like my heavy rock in general, but I had this album on cassette back in the mid-'80s and didn't bother getting it on CD when I was building my collection, so that says something. But damn, you have to love the scope of these tunes. Everything is majestic, tight, and while the songs wind and stray, this band is fine-tuning the art of bringing it back to repeated and recognizable themes on this album and there is a musicality and songcraft that sets them apart from their peers. And Lars on drums is pretty darned good, in addition to all the other noise this band makes. This was the album that started Metallica's acceptance into the mainstream, which, unbelievably, did not alienate the band's ultra-dedicated fans. They found a way to maintain the metal majesty and attitude and just kept sweeping more people into the fold by writing songs that resonate and brandishing an attitude that straddles the best of metal and "popular" music. Even the cliché lyrics — sanitarium! — ring as honest, and I've grown to appreciate the dry drum sounds and how every instrument sounds isolated from the others. It's a lot to take in as a whole, but this landmark album holds up, in my estimation. Master! Master!
one of the best of its kind
Solid metal album
Classic Metallica. I listen to a lot of metal so I know just how influential they are. Solid album throughout. Great thrash. I just wish the bass was louder.
I was already a fan of Metallica before this, but it was nice to listen to some songs that aren't in their top 5. I would say that it requires a specific mood or moment. Pretty good all around, might listen to this whole album again if I don't know what else to listen to. Master of Puppets and Battery are definitely the banger outliers.
A really solid album from fairly early in Metallica's career. You can definitely hear the influence of Diamond Head and the twin guitars are reminiscent of UFO and Thin Lizzy. Standout tracks are the brilliant Master of Puppets and The Thing That Should Not Be. A few other tracks are a bit plodding, but overall a really good listen
You've got to be in the right mood for this album but this came up on a day that I was in that mood. Great album. Love the intensity of it.
Honest to God thought I could smash through a brick wall listening to this album. The bass and drums are heavy throughout and there’s a reason Metallica is notoriously one of the best in the heavy metal genre. Highly recommend listening to this when mowing the lawn- you will think you can mow 20 acres no problem.
This album gets you up in the morning.
It's a thrash classic for a reason. 7-8/10
5/13/2022 - ALBUM #107 Today's Album: "Master Of Puppets" by Metallica - This album was on that I have been excited to get to since it's popped up on the generator. I've always wanted to get into Metallica because many of my friends have raved about them, but never giving them a close listen caused me to write it all of as overblown noise and terrible vocals. Going into this album, I played it casually on a set of speakers while doing housework and really just found it mediocre and at many points fatiguing to listen to. However, giving this album a listen with headphones for the 2nd time was one of the most impressive experiences I have had with music to date. To start, the performances on this album are, with no bit of sarcasm whatsoever, perfect. I might not personally always love or be in the mood for some of the melodies here, but there isn't a single time where the song feels held back by the instrumentation and there are so many moments throughout the record where the playing is so next level it's hard for me to visualize how it was even recorded. The production also is killer, with all of the instruments feeling really well placed in the mix and the tightness of the guitar riffs and drumming really shine through in the recording. The whole record flows incredibly well, balancing the heavier songs with more accessible songwriting and I think the overall theming of the record is incredibly well done, comparing god and religion to some sort of puppet mastery in the title track and going on to call Jesus a "Lepper Messiah" in the track of the same name. The title track is easily one of the best of the album, with this really cool dropped beat at the end of every 4th measure and the solo at the end expertly implements their guitarwork into this really awkward time signature. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) is also a fantastic track, with a great building atmosphere and some sonic aesthetics that I would never expect from Metallica, but holy cow do they just rock the shit out of this entire track. The soloing is always a highlight on all of these tracks but the ones in this track are particularly amazing. Orion is truly a perfect track in my opinion. The band really just lets loose and travels through so many different sonic landscapes, many of which involve some of the craziest guitarwork I have ever heard. Damage Inc. is an incredible closer to the album, with not only a great intro, but an insanely fast chugging groove as the track gets going and a really cool vocal delivery when whispering, "Damage Incorporated." The instrumental break at the end has some of the fastest guitar riffs I have heard and barely sound possible. It's a really chaotic and exciting way to end the album and although I don't love the way it ends off rhythmically, it is still a fantastic finisher. Overall, this album blew every expectation I had of it out of the water and has introduced me to the world of heavy metal in one of the best ways imaginable. There are a very small amount of moments where the heavier tone of the album gets a bit much for me, but when I really put myself in the mindset to listen to Metal music, it really gets easier to see how few and far between those moments really are. Give this album a listen if you have ever wanted to get into heavier music and have been waiting for an entry point that's worth it. Highlights: Battery, Master Of Puppets, The Thing That Should Not Be, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Leper Messiah, Orion, Damage Inc. Score: 8.5/10 Exceeded every expectation for metal music I had
This is my first time listening to Metallica! Their sound encompasses a range of metal subgenres and they switch back and forth between them making this a wild ride! I definitely hear the heavy metal drama of Sabbath. Then they get into more dark and thrashy sounds that I typically associate with metal. And the guitar solos! Some real melt your face shit! There’s even some psychedelic vibes on “Orion.” I dig the anti-war lyrics too. The album cover says a lot and songs like “Disposable Heroes” are really powerful. Highlights: “Battery,” “Master of Puppets,” “Disposable Heroes,” “Orion”
Parte subito in modo molto aggressivo. Bellissima la title song. Mi pare si perda un po', alcune canzoni sono belle, gasano e caricano, ma non quanto avrei voluto. 4
Presque envie de sortir les caras du frigo Prefs: Battery, Master of Puppets, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Disposable Heroes, Orion, Damage, Inc. Moins pref: Leper Messiah
Full points to Metallica for carrying on after the death of Cliff Burton, cos we would've lost some great music had they chosen not to continue at that point, but this would've been a tremendous note to bow out on if it had come to that. This is them at an early peak.
Heavy
Great metal album
Lot of good tracks.
What do you get when the Swedish Chef cooks spaghetti? Pasta of Muppets. Hetfield, the ever-faster poet, pumps out the lyrics but I think it’s not quite on the same tier of some of their other albums.
It's textbook Metallica; massive energy, driving riffs, incredible harmonics, powerful drums, interesting and gritty to it's core. An album of classic tracks with Welcome Home, Battery and Master of Puppets. It's a solid album, maybe not their best album, but it's certainly Metallica being Metallica.
I prefer the more melodic slow parts as opposed to the crunchy fast strum parts but it’s still a classic. Master of Puppets the song is a masterpiece
4/5. Best when played loud! Metallica is one of the few metal bands that I like. These guys are awesome - glad I got a chance to see them in concert. This album is "before my time" and I only listened to it after some of their more mainstream albums came out. Master of Puppets, is definitely in the same realm as those others are. Standouts: Master of Puppets. The rest are really good too!
I’m not super into thrash metal, and some of the songs go on a little long, but there are some super interesting ideas and dynamic shifts that took me by surprise. Prime example was the middle section in “Master of Puppets”, just really compelling and epic guitar moves.
This is again a tragic case of personal bias. I like this album. I really, really like this album. The progression of Master of Puppets into The Thing That Should Not Be into Welcome Home is fantastic, bespoke song placemets. However. I'm simply not a fan of prolonged, repetetive instrumental sequences. They're good, they're impressive, they're just not my thing. Still, anything below 4/5 would be a robbery, in my book.
I'm in two minds here. On the one hand "Master Of Puppets" must have been a huge thing when it came out and definitely sounded fresh. The song "Master Of Puppets" is widely considered one of the best pieces of music in history (a well deserved title). But on the other hand I can't help myself from comparing it to later trash metal albums, and it pales in comparison. Apart from legendary "Master Of Puppets" and "Orion" I don't think there was much more standing out. Nevertheless, I consider it a classic.
Znam na pamięć, ale przyjemnie było wrócić do tego albumu, bo ostatni raz przesłuchałam go w całości prawdopodobnie jeszcze w czasach gimnazjum. Szepty w Damage Inc przesuper. Mocne 4.
I got so much work done today. What an album. I'm really into the instrumental. Best track: Orion
One of the most iconic metal albums. It's fast, aggressive, and here to make an impact. "Battery" opens with soft classical acoustic guitar before bursting into energy that carries all the way through the album.
What a surprisingly fun album. A couple of monster hits followed by some really solid metal. It even manages to avoid most of the cheesiness of some of the OTHER early metal bands (I'm looking at you Megadeath). Nothing to hate here and a lot to love.
One of those albums that sounds generic now because it was so groundbreaking that it got imitated for 20 years. Metallica are douchebags but this album is still a classic.
4.95 toujours un classique a ecouter, jadore.
I should listen to more metal.
This is probably the sweet spot for Metallica to me. Not as heavy as the earlier thrash stuff but before they started doing lame ballads
I'm not typically a thrash metal fan, but I did enjoy this more than I expected. Some of the songs dragged on a bit too long though.
Awesome early Metallica! 4/5
Intense. Furious.
It’s 55 minutes and only has 8 songs. This I like. The obvious 8.5 minute title track is the highlight. This is thrash done right.
Metallica's best album, 4 to 5 stars, classic thrash metal from the late 80's
Arguably Metallica's best album in my memory, but when I listened to it today, I did not enjoy it as much. The first tracks, and especially the title song, are brilliant, but about halfway in I got a little bored with the sound, especially the wild guitar solos, which nowadays sound quite old-fashioned.
Drulluþétt!
Klassieker, maar precies wat doorsnee.
A brutal and athletic barrage of metal from the single most distinctive sounding metal band ever. Not a huge fan but I can appreciate the artistry here.
I never got deep into Metallica, and I'm past the age where thrash would be casual listening, but this is a really good album. Really, really good.
Liked the previous Metallica albums more, because I'm more of a trash metal fan, but certainly a couple of great songs on this album
hollowed-out mixing, directionless angry vocals, and some questionable guitar technique do not detract from how strangely catchy this album is. just headbang all your troubles away, man
Peak Metallica.
Toll, aber nicht so toll wie das Black Album
The only Metallica album I really like. Most of the songs are on my workout playlist.
4.5/5 is more appropriate, very good and will relisten.
Nice album, first time listening
This is on constant rotation on the car stereo. Never bettered to my mind.
It's the best Metallica album I've listened to, enjoyed it. I'm not always a huge Metallica fan, perhaps because they're so highly rated I go into it expecting such great things. But it is nice, accessible metal with some good hooks
DEATH METAL
Classic
Not a huge fan of Metallica, but undeniably iconic, unique, and foundational for thrash metal.
Voor mij echt een album van Metallica wat de band zo groot gemaakt heeft
Deze classic nog nooit in zijn geheel gehoord. Erg tof!
Why is it that I liked this album so much? What made it so listenable? This isn’t usually “my” genre. But I enjoyed the rhythm of it, and it made me move the whole time. I liked the use of lyrics as sound. I liked the lyrics as a message. I liked the vocals—hard but not ugly. I liked the guitars and percussion—so much hard energy but always rhythmic and musical. I can’t fully explain the difference with other albums, I just liked this one. I would play it again. Phrases I will steal: “the thing that should not be,” and “bow to leper messiah!” The title track really, really swings I think. And “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)” will be a good drive-to-work anthem.
Good but I get a bit tired of it. Needs to be shuffled into other music.
classic thrash for a reason!
Daft but a lot of fun.
Классика от метлы. Очень хороший альбом.
It was good, but I liked Black Sabbath more.
я бы не слушал на постоянке, но в целом круто
Powerful riffs and brilliant energy. Can see how this album was so inspiring.
Very good, each track seemed better than the last. Favorite track is probably Welcome Home.
This was my first real metal album - had it on tape - and I think still holds up. Battery is just a great opener and I don't think the rest of the songs every let me down. Sanitarium is also that mix of heavy and ridiculous that I just love.
classic album one of their best
Yeah enjoyed this quite a bit.
4/5
Good album. Its no wonder they where so big back then. I've grown up on modern metal, but you can really appreciate their music. Will listen to again
Pretty good
Loud and fun but the songs really run together and get exhausting.
First time listening: 7/8 albums liked. Solid rock album. I love songs exceeding 4 minutes to be honest, but ironically the 8 minute one was kind of odd to my tastes. Other than that, very tame music for metal, but great nonetheless! One song saved
classic
I absolutely love this album, maybe my favorite album by Metallica!! The title track still slaps to this day.
Great metal album love it
Couldnt tell the songs apart, or even artists as I was listening to Iron Maiden after the album finished and didnt notice. But enjoyed it 7/10
Typical metal sound. Love Master of Puppets.
It was a good listen, but I find this album somewhat overrated within the metal community. It's good, especially in terms of musicianship. But I find the songwriting somewhat bland. I do like Welcome Home (Sanitarium) a lot and always have. But on the whole I find the album just good and not at all the masterpiece many metal fans make it out to be.
Not a huge Metallica fan, but that is a good album.
Fun and satisfying listen. DRUMS!
Bacana demais! Porém passou minha fase já
I feel like this is where it all started for Metallica’s rise. Such a good album full of thrash.
Actually kinda good
Never heard this album, but certainly can see its influence.
Rhythmically interesting and some great solos. Tracks were too long. “Orion”
Vibez
Pretty good! I'm not really a metal fan, but the guitar work is obviously skilled. I think it's mostly the vocals I don't care for, but here it works well.
Stabilt album. Jag kommer ihåg när denna skiva kom. Jag var 12 år och tyckte att det var för hårt och snabbt. Jag var mer en Alphaville och Howard Jones kille då :)
Masters of their Craft. This music makes me want to lift weights, fight, drink, and end up at a tattoo parlor getting inked on my back with a picture of Zeus throwing a lightning bolt into the eyes of a jet black panther.
The Thing that Should Not Be and Sanitarium are some of the best hard rock/metal tracks ever. Solid album, though slightly less interesting on the back half.
Very heavy but I would listen to this while working out. I do like the song Master of Puppets.
Classic album I’ve never fully listened too. New songs I liked- Battery, Welcome home, Disposable hero’s.
While I’m not the punk I was in high school who listened to this album a thousand times in my friends Camaro I really enjoyed this trip back to hear this again.
This should be 3.5, but I’m feelimg generous today because this pairs well with a threshold bike workout.
Great album
Classic metal album, timeless sound. Though gets a bit old at times.
Was surprised, better than I thought, but Metallica is definitely not my bag
Good album, bit too raw for my personal taste
What can I say? MASTER MASTER
1986. Key Songs: Battery, Master Of Puppets, Damage Inc.
The best Metallica album! Thrash heaven!!
Bekend album
Pretty good, not exactly my cup of tea, but I could see why people like it.
I enjoyed this while it was on, but I wouldn't go out of my way to own this or listen to it
not really my genre, but I can still appreciate it.
There are classic individual songs, but as an album, it's too much at once. Might be a problem with how I view the genre.
Interesting that this was only a few days after a Megadeth album… trying to start a ruck? 😂 Still don’t get thrash/death/doom/etc but the singing and lyrics were better on this than the Megadeth album. It’s ok. About as excited as I can get for it 🤷♂️
It’s Fine. The songwriting isn’t reeeeally up to scratch for me. Playing is fine Bit I’d rather listen to van halen. But I didn’t hate myself while listening
Good album from the metally boys
A-siden er betydelig bedre enn B-siden.
Oh son las 8 de la mañana… I’m into it. Not my style, but it made me feel powerful.
fire
IDK, a lot of love for this one and most of it just washes over me. Maybe the victim of a million copycats. Some great shredding here, but I think a couple of times Lars couldn't keep up with the timing so it sounded off. Master of Puppets the song is an all timer, but the Metallica rhythm guitar sound and James' voice always feel a bit off for me. The Black album is definitely better.
I would give it a 3.5 if I could, I like thrash and I think there is some really good and iconic stuff in master of puppets but it loses points for being a bit unfun and sounding like mud tbh
Not the biggest fan of Metallica but I'll give it 3
Not the great album I listened to with Sandman etc in high school
Another victim of the five-point rating scale. This is better than a three, but a four seems like too much. Hmmm... Loved it when I was 12. It just feels so bloated and overwritten listening to it 30+ years later. I'll save the 4 for Ride The Lightning. Oh wait, that's not on the list??? Shameful.
jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj
Thrashing good time.
I'm sure I've listened through this album before but most of the tracks except the highlights aren't that familiar to me. Master of Puppets and Welcome Home (Sanitarium) are the best tracks off the album and the only ones I'd really consider spinning up again, even if Master of Puppets runs a little long for me. The rest falls right in line with what I expect from an early Metallica album, crunchy chun-chun guitar interspersed with Hetfield yelling words and the world's weakest drumming behind it all doing nothing at all but keeping time. I still think Lars is a mediocre drummer at best (he gets better on later albums but still isn't creative as his peers). I thought the guitar work on Orion was pretty decent.
Thrash metal isn't my thing, but I know there are a ton of folks that love it, and this album more or less defined it. The performances are strong and tight, and unlike something like the Slayer album I reviewed earlier, the lyrics are actually mostly comprehensible and actually have something to say. And "Orion" stands out as proof that the band can do more than just thrash. Not something I'd seek out to listen to, but a great exemplar of its genre.
My final thoughts can sort of be summed up as "Eh?" I think. There's some things I really like here, good guitar riffs and drums, some songs I like more than others. But overall this is not an album I want to be listening to frequently.
Most of the songs sound the same. Gets a bit boring. Nowt against them. I can appreciate them and i did like bits of the album; but i just cant take bands like this serious. Corny metal music! Generous 3
Better than the first Metallica album I listened to but lots to be desired. Master of puppets is solid the rest I can do with it without.
Like lowkey no thoughts about this album. It was fine. Some good parts and some bad parts. At some point everything started to sound the same. 3/5
They are way better when they have bass! And it's not bad at all but definitely not my thing
I'm just not into metal
I can appreciate how good the album is from an unpersonal opinion, the band sre incredible muscions. the melodies and talent in playing the instruments are very good. The songs are also lengthy wich is great. However it's not my music taste at all, i couldnt casualy listen at the bus stop for me. Its not somthing I would listen to unless I was drunk at a gig. So it's about a 6.5/10
great music, too "metal" for my liking, used to be addicted to this tho.
6.5
Faves: Welcome Home (Sanitarium) Orion (specifically that bass section in the middle)
meh
3/6
They must've thought the album title was so tuff when they came up with it 🥀. Favorite track: "Onion"
Pretty cool, heavy rock
It’s Metallica doing what Metallica does
St s4 core
Og sånt her må man høre på på bursdagen sin! Takke mæ til alle andre gaver enn Metallica. (Æ skjønne det ikke, for det e jo bare bråk og trommer som går for fort?)
When it comes to thrash metal, Metallica has been the most successful band to bring it home. I am not a huge metal guy but I appreciate the musical skills involved. I like Metallica and I think they have been able to make the genre more listenable. Master of Puppets may not be their best album, but it did echo across the industry. Dark themes of war/PTSD with heavy guitar and drums are common for the band and Hetfield has the perfect delivery. This record deserves a spot for the impact it had and I'm betting we get at least one more from them...2.62 stars.
Even if I'm not the biggest thrash metal fan it's hard to deny that Metallica are masters of their craft and deservedly the most cited and influential band. They carved out their lane, honed in their sound and were able to really revolutionize and popularize the genre by making it more appealing to the masses. Master of Puppets is a perfect example of this as it is full of the cliches that you see elsewhere in the genre, yet nobody else has been able to match anywhere close to their popularity. While I don't regularly go to Metallica I can't deny that in small doses I enjoy them. They are really effective at walking the fine line between the melodic sounds and extremely skilled instrumental work. Hetfield's vocals are powerful and effective without diving into demon-wretch status that turns me off otherwise. While Metallica is never listed as one my favorites I also don't go out of my way to turn them off when I run into them. I can't see any argument against Metallica appearing on almost any list. 2.99 stars
Orion actually made me stop doing what I was doing, which was not really Listening to the album... But that's only enough to bring it up to a 3 for me. I understand that this album is important to others, but it just doesn't do it for me. I can only Listen to a couple Metallica songs before I get bored. Oh and I should probably use the word douche canoe in here somewhere... Because of the Napster drama and all.
Me gustó el álbum, un poco extraño, pero siento que eso es lo que le da un toque especial. Me gustaron más unas canciones que otras, pero está padre que el mismo álbum va contando una historia que, según yo, tiene relación con la portada.
⭐️ could be interested, maybe for workouts?
My third favorite in the discography. This stuff was heavy for its time for sure. SoCal heavy metal through and through. Right on the cusp of switching to that butt rock black album nonsense. But, bottle it up and keep it in the 80s. Metal became so much more than this and as a result is much more niche and sounds alot better.
had its moments but all sounds kind of similar song to song
I'm sure I would love this if I was in to Heavy Metal
Soy más de hard rock que de heavy metal, supongo.
It just isn't my thing. The guitar work is great though.
Fun. Don’t love the vocals, and the songs are too long and repetitive. But fun to exercise to.
Would be much better if he kept his mouth shut.
They are technically brilliant but they leave me oddly cold - I'd imagine seeing them live would be a note perfect rendition of songs from the album. Weirdly joyless
Probably would have been great when i was a teenage,, but not so now. A bit repetitive.
"мастер ляльок" "дер пуппен майстер" "ле матр де пупэ́" единственное реально гениальное, что сделала metallica - название. потому что в детстве я думала, что любой металл - это про них. ну а так молодцы суки чо скажешь прост с утра ебать так мозги не нада пж
