Reviews (page 12 of 14)

This was good on a technical level but not really my style, a bit too twee for me as a concept album

At any moment this album could turn into a more interesting, Radiohead-esque project if it wasn't so squarely aimed at people high on acid

Not really my thing.

4/11, 36%

This album started out very strong and I enjoyed the first 3 songs quite a bit. Fight Test is one of those songs I think could get very stuck in my head with repeated listens and I enjoyed the world building and storytelling in One More Robot and Yoshimi Pt. 1. Unfortunately, the rest of the album quickly lost my interest and I didn’t find anything else all that exceptional except for Do You Realize??, which is a pretty solid song. Overall, don’t think this is a bad album at all, and perfectly listenable, but not something that I plan to revisit.

Strange mix between beautiful melodies and off-putting passages. So we end up in the middle, just like that other Flaming Lips album. 'Coyne has claimed that he was unaware of the songs' [Fight test] similarities until producer Dave Fridmann pointed them out.' Yeah, sure.

I gave it a whirl, but it's not for me.

I'll be honest. I had this album on and nothing about it caught my attention as good or bad. I barely remember it, even while I'm listening to it. Solid 3 for background music.

I think this could be a 4 with further listens. One of those times where i recognised a few tracks that spotify already puts in my mixes, without me knowing who they were by. Has unusual sound and vibe, and album art that makes me wonder if i've micro dosed lsd today

Some good tracks, cool cover

leuk& rustig

1st song kinda sounds like father and son by Yusuf definitely a different sound than I'm used to overall, intriguing and glad I listened but not extremely memorable. pretty experimental for me, maybe if i revisit in a different mood could be better.

Yea I mean the hits are the hits. Very well produced almost experimental. Very very early 2000s eclectic indie sound. But you can hear who they influence in that sphere now. Overall not super listenable, just because of the experimental sound/nature, the songs I like the most were the actual songs.

Cat: well, I definitely like this more than the other Flaming Lips album we listened to! More funk. More grit. More groove. AJ: Some cool noises for the acid kids. Yoshimi part 1 is pretty cool. Space mush. Not sure how anyone listens to them alot.

not my style. but ok

Not bad

It’s fine! Parts are fun and some lyrics are good.

I enjoyed some of the sounds on this album, but I find it surprising that they can produce a song a beautiful and meaningful as ‘do you realise’ and then have so much unrelatable nonsense on the rest of the album.

Fight, Title song, do you realize??? very good songs. Rest neat but forgettable

Smart, innovative psychedelic rock with layered and complex arrangements and production. Not my cup of tea but, as a musician, I'll go back and deconstruct some changes and harmonies in this album to figure out how they did that.

This album surprised me by having a better second half than first half, a trait which most albums aren’t able to boast. Both halves were good, but I enjoyed the latter more because it delivered the excitement promised by the title and and cover art. The first half was, honestly, boring as fuck. Though I recognize, like The Flaming Lips’ whole discography, it was original and innovative, I wasn’t able to get into it. A lackluster beginning with a pretty solid closing. 3/5

Outta spacey vibes Only listened to it once no strong thoughts sorry

Modern hippie music I suppose.

Fun, sweet, a bit too ethereal , so pleasant background music. Would be good in a Sunday afternoon. I like the effects laden bass and guitar.

Hmm, I liked the feel of the album, but it is just not for me. ’Fight Test’ and ‘Do You Realize?’ were the ones I enjoyed the most. Overall good, just not something I would listen to again. 3/5

I didn't really get this album. Was an ok listen but nothing was particularly memorable. 5/10.

Up 'til now, I have not heard a word of The Flaming Lips. The music is psych-rock -- atmospheric with heavy synthesizer and special effects, mostly acoustic guitars, good bass lines. No distortion ... every thing is sounds clean. The lyrics are introspective and mature.

It looks like a boring rock electronic-like album good enough to be on the list of 1001 boring electronic albums to listen to, but some songs like "Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell" and "Are You a Hypnotist??" makes it a little bit more remarkable of attention. I liked it on a Friday morning, but it's not the perfect fit for any other mood.

Cute and fun! Saw the Flaming Lips live many years ago and it was a fantastic show. This album doesn’t have the same energy I remember, but it was still really pleasant

This one was very pretty and almost alien. I loved the little bleep sounds scattered throughout the album. What knocks this one down for me is that the vocals are very annoying, he sounds whiney and congested most of the time. Some of the melodies aren’t that strong either. It's pretty solid though and I would revisit it.

Fun album. Love Yoshimi

Had to listen to this a couple times. I liked it but not sure really why.

I like the part where Yoshimi goes " wop wop woooooop", but I am not sure if he had to do it for 5 minutes straight. It's okay, it has a unique sound, feels interesting, but doesn't blow me away. I expected much, MUCH more from such cool art on the cover.. 3/5.

Was alright but a bit weird. Didn’t appreciate the track with screaming. Would be absolutely terrified if that suddenly started playing while I was alone at night.

Kind of seemed like a more "modern" take of 70s sounds. It was good background noise. None of it really stood out for besides the same titled song pt 1. Probably wouldn't listen to the album again, but it was solid.

7.5/10

A decent but unspectacular album that is only going to be remembered for its first track that is so obviously inspired by Father & Son and the worst denial ever made about said inspiration being purely coincidental

I like it but all the songs go on too long

This album is mildly hard to rank, because I feel as though this supposed to be some sort of otherworldly experience judging from the composition and lyrics, but considering I'm as sober as a judge right now, this album tended to be a little boring. I really enjoyed Part 1 of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, and knew this before going in because of my significant other and Rock Band, but the rest of this felt pretty samey with some bright spots shining through. There were some musical effects that had hairs on the back of my neck tickling a little, but otherwise an album that's certainly just okay.

Solid alternative album

Sci fi pop? Ok.. interesting

favs: Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloon, Fight Test worst: In the Morning of the Magicians

Indie pop with a healthy dose of electronica for good measure. I liked this one quite a bit at first, but it somehow got old the longer the album ran. Still 3/5

Really nice, with some welcome trip-hop vibes

Meio mornao, apesar da boa qualidade sonora

It had me in some moments and lost me in others.

Post-pop indie that's tolerable.

Boring, radioheady style but it's ok!

interesting rock style. Like a little electronic with some crazy drums.

-"Flight Test" is a nice, very happy, pop-rocky song that really contrasts with the extra story-like elements in the beginning and end of the song. The main portion reminds of something that would be in like Lego Rock Band haha. Calm and very happy rock. -Cool bass line in "One More Robot / Sympathy 3000-21." rest of the song is just okay -"Are You a Hypnotist??" is very ethereal and Pink Floyd-y -"Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 2" and "Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia)" are both cool instrumental tracks. The former was a cool rock jam and the latter was cool with the horns and stuff -This album seemed like a good idea but it was poorly executed. The "environmental" sounds in the opening track make it seem like there are going to be darker portions of the album but the cool dark moments never really return. Was quite dissapointed.

Maybe the quintessential Flaming Lips album, but I don’t think it is the best one. It is good, but not consistently so.

Enjoyed more than I thought, but not my cup of tea.

It would be tragic if those evil robots win.

Geinig bandje.

Zo samen 2,5 sterren.

I like how The Flaming Lips reinvent themselves with every album, even if I don't always particularly like the inventions themselves. The peculiar case of Yoshimi is one of those: it's OK, musically, but doesn't exactly knock my headphones off. Do You Realize, however, is one of those songs that do.

Fun concept, but not super into it.

hoped to enjoy this more

Oh... Yoshimi!

not my favourite style, but has some nice tunes

Oon kuunnellu tän albumin joskus muutama vuosi sitten ja sieltä oli jäänyt mieleen aika hyvin muutamia kappaleita. Nyt uudelleen kuunnellessa kiinnitin taas ehkä eniten huomiota niihin samoihin kappaleisiin. Muuten tää jäi ehkä vielä vähän etäiseksi. Suosikit: Flight Test, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1, Are You a Hypnotist??

It was interesting, I recognized the song "do you realize" I'm not sure where I heard it though, possibly a commercial. It sounded like a concept album, all the songs related to each other with the theme of fighting pink robots. Overall it was ok

Fallega jolly tónlist, skemmtilegt þema. Fílidda.

Dont make me like you, Flaming Lips 3.5/5 so 3/5

Прослушано! Не зацепило, ни о чем.

Good vibes but overall slightly confusing. Would listen again but in a “I want to be different” way that girls in 2000s movies do

Good first song, sounds a lot like Cat Stevens' Father and Son. The rest was good, if a little weird. Probably not my vibe, but put it on and I won't complain

Pretty decent

I want to give this album 3.5 stars... since I have to choose, I'm going to give it 3. But I do like it!

That first track is sooooo freaking good. Does the rest of the album keep to that high standard? Alas, no. But this did come out just when concept albums got hip again, and it did try. Struggling between 3 and 4 here ...

New achey futuristic album dedicated to the hostile takeover of evil robots. Ethereal and chill sounding despite the lyrical content.

Starts pretty damn awesome, but falls off on the second half. Still pretty cool album.

I found this one entertaining.

Pretty good songs, but the digital effects are a little overpowering. Seemed unnecessary at times.

Just finished it. The album is nice and the order of the songs is very good too. It somewhat feels like you’re listening to an musical audiobook. A trippy psychedelic one.

‘Do you realise’ will always remind me of Canada, main dude was crowd surfing in a big bubble! Few good tracks, some a bit meh.

Rock experimental. Cosas interesantes. Escuchar nuevamente.

I gave "The Soft Bulletin" a 5 star but this one didn't click with me like that one did. It's a little more left-field. The production is great, but sometimes works against the songs with how kitchen-sink it can be. Favorite track: "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1"

An album which perhaps got a bit thinner on a relisten. Yes the melodies are stuck on wistful and yearning, and the vocals on falsetto - and over a track or two the Lips formula here is great, over a whole album it becomes a little samey. I prefer (don't shoot me) the albums which precede and follow (Soft Bulletin and Mystics) as though they were never lovelier than here, in the other albums there is more variety.

Interesting concept

Surf rock type feel. Psychological rock, can't really head bob to it but good to sway to. 6/10

It has three stonking tunes for a lot of the rest feels fairly like a filler. Cover art 5/5

Worth listening to for Fight Test, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, and Do You Realize?? The rest is pretty forgettable.

Didnt listen to the whole thing. Kinda boring but not necessarily bad. 3/5.

Quite odd, like the synth and quite futuristic, was okay.

I remember the band's name but that's really about it. Not sure if I'd ever heard any of their songs from this or any of their albums. I'm glad this project introduced them to me. This is a very good album. I like their sound and style, and they compose and perform solidly. Nice mix of instruments and all layered so well. I'll have to check out their other albums.

that one song was really good

not bad, not sure it’s really for me though some good quirky alt rock for sure.

Honestly disappointing. Not because I had high expectations, but because I didn’t want to call it trash and sound so subjective. In its defense I thought maybe I wasn’t in the right mood for it and therefore couldn’t enjoy it but it wasn’t great. I appreciate it that it was definitely a story.

Only knew ”do you realize” from before but the album as a whole is alright.

A bit squelchy and weird for my liking. Do you Realise is beautiful but does really elevate everything else above middle marks.

A wild ride with some fun songs throughout.

Pop psicodélico. Ni fu ni fa.

spotify prøver alltid å sette på ein sang fra detta albumet til meg, men eg liker den ikkje men egentlig ikkje så ille album generelt

It it is not at all a bad album, however alternative is a hit or miss for me. There’s a lot of things I can acknowledge being good while not liking it for my personal taste.

Genre: Neo-Psychedelia 3/5 Well, thank goodness it's just these two albums from these guys. The Flaming Lips practice in self-indulgence more than a lot of their listeners realize. This album is a few things: it's goofy, eccentric, and very over-produced. It has some good songs on it, especially Do You Realize, which might be my favorite I've ever heard from these guys, and certainly is a song that's better than anything from The Soft Bulletin. However, this album feels like a big, loud mess and, while I understand that's the intention to some degree, there isn't much in the ways of very enjoyable listening experiences. The title track, a song I've played in Rock Band 3 a lot, is the most tame song here, but that doesn't mean the synth bass isn't completely distracting or that the added production elements (glockenspiel, editing of the acoustic guitar) blend well together. Other than it all sounding like a big mess, the vocals are grating. I do not like Wayne Coyne's voice on any of the tracks here, even when draped in overblown harmonies. As hard as I'm being, this isn't a 1 or a 2, mostly because you can feel the passion here, and you can hear how this may be rewarding to some. Overall, The Flaming Lips are an interesting group, worthy of crafting a decent song here or there, but I struggle to find the high art in all of this.

I accidently saw the Flaming Lips at Red Rocks, sometime around when this album came out. I was really there to see Cake. In any case, I don't remember their set much one way or the other. What I remember the most is that either Lips quit early or Modest Mouse didn't play; someone wasn't feeling well. This jug band, the Hackensaw Boys, which had played earlier, before most people had arrived, came back to the stage to fill in, initiating one of the most joyful experiences I've ever had. 9,000 drunk people dancing with enthusiastic abandon to music we would never usually hear. I am pretty sure they sold all the CDs they brought for their merch table that night. I know I bought one. Good times! Anyway, back to the album at hand. Love the cover. Digging the music. Pretty, chill, with weird lyrics. What's not to like. Well, after a while, it does drag on a bit.

I found the beep boop electronica a little trying on this one, while there was a lot of fun parts.

Kinda funky, won’t be rushing back to it though.

Good band not exactly wht Id like but it doesnt dissapoint me

Intriguing sound, experimental and electronic influences, definitely not something I have heard, or typically listen to. The idea of the concept is interesting but the album did not flow as well for me as it probably should. It deserves a re-listen and a focus because I’m sure there are detailed and special moments present in the music and lyrics. I may not have been prepared for them.

First song bangs but they stole it so???

Loved it when I was a younger man - saw them play it live - not quite as magical through the lens of time, but still pretty good in places. Mad as lorries, and delightfully so

I realized that I don’t like the flaming lips.

Fine. 3.5

I like

okish very slow

meio viajado, mas é legal uhasuha

I'd heard a few songs here and there from this album on Spotify playlists before but I'd never sat down and listened to it in full. I'm of a mixed mind. It's an interesting album but I don't think something I'd listen to in full. Also very concept-albumy to me and out of context the songs don't really work.

This was pleasant enough. I thought it would be a little over the top but it was more chill than expected.

Was nice and chill at parts but the next day I really only remember liking one song. :/

A varied, fun adventure, qlbeit one that i wouldn't go on too often.

A thought I had: The Flaming Lips make music for children. Not saying there's anything wrong with that, or that you need to be a child to enjoy it, but the squelchy bass, pretty soundscapes and gentle/surreal lyrics sound tailor-made for kids (maybe that's psychedelic music in general to some extent, but this band in particular). At first you think they're being ironic somehow but they're not, and I guess that's part of the appeal. Anyway, it's another record I wanted to love but ended up just liking. It's less of a concept album than I expected, and more instrumental. Do You Realize?? and Yoshimi pt.1 are great. The rest sounds lush and dreamy but the songs aren't as strong. 3.5.

I quite liked some songs, and others didn’t really do anything for me. Favorites were Fight Test and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1.

Nice background. Rather alternative/progressive

Not sure what I have heard but there are some nice melodies with sparks of bagpipes.

Like a cross between Neil Young and Grandaddy. Interesting but not engaging.

Wow. Was I confused on who this band was. I've always thought they sang New Age Girl from Dumb and Dumber. Look who's dumb now.

The concept album that is not a concept album (at least according to the band)! This album has a good sound to it: indie rock with some progressive sounding instrumentals. It was interesting, but I can't say that I loved it on the first couple of listens anyway.

Not bad, but too experimental for my taste

qweqwewe

Weird but in a good way. Mindless, no profundities apparent unless the listener has an existential infatuation with "Do You Realize?". The Flaming Lips are melodic, the vocals are balanced well with their music, this is a good listen if not a little depressing towards the end. In a vibe that emits feelings of Scott Pilgrim's more subdued playlists, the change in pace is welcome and certainly not boring, if that is how the listener feels.

More recognisable tubes than I thought

Fun, but less enjoyable than I expected.

You know, it's not a bad album. But it does tend towards the "weird for the sake of being weird" side of quirky. Songs about robots will never not be cheesy and this album leans into the cheddar. But, for all that, the musicality is solid, the performances are fun, and the production is great. It's just ... well, it's just really goofy.

Very '90s and '00s radio vibes on some of the songs. Very... uh... wtf is going on vibes on some of the others... LOL. Like I completely understand the 'musical art' of the album, but idk if those tracks are for me. There were definitely some songs that I really enjoyed to be fair, but the album as a whole probably not for me.

Happily surprised with this one.

Reign of Kindo covered Do You Realize?

Nothing terrible, nothing outstanding.

I remember everyone loved this tears ago and at the time I couldn't get into maybe over hyped. 2 decades on wouldn't say I would get over excited about it but pleasant enougth the concepts a bit lost on me. Don't what the beef with robots is?

I wasn't overly familiar with The Flaming Lips. I enjoyed this album. The opener Fight Test threw me slightly, I initially thought it was a Cat Stevens cover, (then I read the back story on Wikipedia, interesting!)

Interesting album, with some very lovely arrangements. I don't love Wayne Coyne’s vocal style, but you have to give the band credit for creating something rather unique and beautiful. Fave Songs: Flight Test, Do You Realize, In the Morning of the Magicians, Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell

Nice, Radiohead-like

// Favs: Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Pt.1 Score: Strong 3

Canciones relajadas, sosegadas, con ritmos un tanto electrónicos. Quizás un poco falta de chispa. Agradable de escuchar.

Now here's an album that I'm intimately familiar with, but have cooled off to over time, putting me in an interesting spot. How do you rank something like that? Ultimately, it's not a bad album. Some of my change of opinion is based around outside factors - my overall opinion on the band, their musical output since then, Wayne Coyne's ego and behavior. This probably ranks somewhere in the middle for me... a pretty solid indie/alternative rock album, but not revolutionary by any means.

Some good tracks (1 and 3) but just fine overall

Love a concept album but was hoping for more

It was a cool sci-fi indie

Was this one of the weirdest things to gain popularity in the early 00s? That was a pretty vanilla, mainstream era in American culture I think - boy bands, rap/rock, etc - those were lame, but not weird. Flaming Lips were/are a little bit weird. "She Don't Use Jelly" was almost a decade before this, I think? So they'd been around, but I think it's interesting that this album got as much attention as it did in 2002. Apparently it's not a concept album, according to Wayne Coyne. Could have fooled me. I guess it just is a very thematic album. Kinda like the Arctic Monkeys album earlier this week, replacing all the themes of urban nightlife in Northern England with the existential angst of fighting for survival against pink robots? Further confusing the concept album question is the fact that this was apparently turned into a musical... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbujal3IcZM... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ As for the music... I really have no idea how to talk about the music. I kinda like it, kinda don't. That's all I got.

Has a few feel good songs but the robotic songs are pretty bizarre for the average listener.

LIstened to it a few times. I know the title-track and might have heard Do You Realize before. Everything else was new to me. Has some interesting sounds, but overall, it isn't something that grabbed me. Standout tracks: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Part I. Fight Test, Do You Realize.

Not bad.

Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Fight test, One more robot

An interesting concept album, and can definitely see how they adapted this into a musical. A lovely soft rock/sci-fi vibe throughout the whole album, somehow reminds me of Neon Genesis Evangelion (maybe that's just the album cover) Best: Fight Test, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1 Worst: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 2 2.5 stars

i tbink it was a completely average album, i think it was just too similar for me but i did like over all the sound. but the genres were strange but nice sound!

Fun, chill, some 60s and 70s vibes, some grunge.

I really like the album art track 1- the vibe was nice and could bop to it if I was in the right mood track 2- good transition, very psychedelic, like mike tvs song in willy wonka, feels like a post apocalyptic world after the mechanical uprising when the first plant grows again track 3- feels much more happy than the last track, love the backing vocals, good vibes, interesting use of synths within majority guitar, so far the whole album feels like I'm tripping on acid, are the robots a metaphor for like depression/drugs?, vibe got darker at end track 4- wtf is happening, the battle between the robots and yoshimi/him? overload of synths and screaming, a wild ride, idk what's happening but its kinda fun, will never listen to this song again tho track 5- back to the psychedelic vibe of track 3, no vocals for a while, 2 tracks, there we go, reminds me of Harry styles, feels hopeful with instrumental but the lyrics allude to giving up/surrendering, a bit of a spacey vibe to it, like floating around in the universe with no set location, just being a free spirit roaming around space, this is a long ass song, the drops are very nice whenever the music stops and picks back up track 6- vocals are very quiet so I can't hear what he's saying but love the vibe, very peaceful, this whole album so far has felt like a lucid dream, harmonies gave been nice all the way through, not a fan of a fade out track 7-feels like stepping off your spaceship onto an alien planet where their civilisation is much more advanced than your own and feeling out of your depth, feels like floating, lovely vibe as usual, songs are starting to sound very similar which isn't a good sign, outro was nice track 8- called its summertime so should feel summery, is giving quite a summery vibe, reminds me of a flashback to summer in a coming of age movie, showing a montage of all of the summer highlights with your friends, I really like this one, I never really like closing a track with drums track 9- intro of counting down was fun, epic vocals with echo, FLOATING IN SPACE, light happy instrumental with dark lyrics 'do you realise that someday everyone you know will die', key change feels very worshippy, this is one of my faves so far, bridge is very good, closes with opening line which I like track 10- gives the same vibes as the rest of the tracks after the sudden change in do you realise, pace is picking up, ties together album themes of looking into the future and hopes/dreams looking forward, track 11 (last track) - strange as all we have is now felt like a strong closer and this could be a complete tonal shift from that, looking to be just an instrumental track like track 4 but slightly less chaotic, slightly, feels a bit unnecessary

Um sonzinho bem gostoso com uma música incrível no meio.

I absolutely fuckinggg loved this album, I think it was the lyrics that got me, and the fact that it was a bit weird, amazing stuff!

3/5 interesting but not enough

- life and death - What is the light is masterpiece

“Do you realise” has been stuck in my head for 2 days. Spotify played it in random order, so I can’t give a precise opinion.

This was great. Very much enjoyed. Not my usual.

Decent, if unremarkable.

proper druggy and decent - sometimes a bit wishy washy.

Not really my thing but very listenable

Sometimes hits me as an acquired taste. Sometines it just hits the spot.

This was ok, some interesting stuff but also some quite forgettable. Do you realise is haunting.

flaming lips ripping off cat stevens.

It was alright, trying to be ethereal at moments and Japanese manga at others. But not my cup of tea to be honest

Labios labios!

bueno... aunque el estilo no es el mio... yoshimi batlles se les gira la olla...

Weird...

Bardzo spoko muza, ale wokal mi się nie podoba. Tekst też taki sobie

I liked it

How the future was imagined 20 years ago. To me it's interesting and calming, but in parts a bit annoying and shallow.

Pretty fun little record.

Mad I never listened them before, great album.

This was a lovely surprise, which I hadn't heard before.

I liked it. I give it 3* because I probably won't choose to put it on, if somebody was listening to it though I'd happily leave it on. They're obviously decent at writing I enjoyed the layers to their songs it's just preference more than anything. Just didn't grab me as an album but wasn't bad by any means.

Nice to have heard the album. But it will not go into my playlist.

Some really good songs, some meh. Definitely different, and my kind of weird. Will improve with more listens.

A cool out there album

Pretty good album, had some fun with the psychedelic nature of it

Good album, cool vibes, interesting songs i dig it.

First time listening to the full album. It was okay, and had a lot more going on than just Santa's and aliens.

I like it but all the songs go on too long

Aaron music

not my type, still pretty good.

I like it but I don't love it

Some of the songs were bordering on unbearable but there were a few good ones. Not a fan of some of the lyrics and the electronics could be a bit much at times.

I like the concept and the guitar and sounds but I don't really enjoy his voice, gave it a try a few months ago as well. I guess it's just not for me

I liked the electronic sounds, but the lead singer's voice was 2 twee 4 me.

This had its moments. The production is really good. Musically, for me every time something interesting happened it would descend in to blandness. The opening track seemed to lean on Father & Son too, which bothered me and I found that being apparent throughout listening (“Hold on, isn’t this…?”) which kinda put me off. Not a fan of the vocals. Pretentious and pompous. Would not revisit.

It wasn't terrible, but it was maybe a bit too strange for my tastes.

Tried again, but still haven't understood the fuss about The Flaming Lips.

Day 1/1001: The Flaming Lips, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots - 7/10 2002 Alternative Fight Test 6/10 One More Robot / Sympathy 3000-21 5/10 Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt.1 4/10 Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt.2 7/10 In the Morning of the Magicians 5/10 Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell 9/10 Are You a Hypnotist? 7/10 It’s Summertime 5/10 Do You Realize?? 9/10 All We Have Is Now 7/10 Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloon 7/10

It's giving "we have Radiohead at home."

убираться под это не круто, поэтому мне не зашло

There's no way these guys weren't high whilst making this. This album feels like I'm in the back of a van whilst it's going down country lanes at 70 mph and I'm getting thrown around.

The only reason I know of The Flaming Lips is because of one track. I can see why, the rest of the album is fine. Nothing special.

Nothing special

It was boring. The music just faded into background noise.

Look into the band members one of them has cool green hair It’s uplifting I’ll give it that I really liked the end of the second track In the morning of magicians is one I could find myself comforted by Are you a hypnotist too- reminds me a little of the tempesst

Okay sure, I guess...

did not catch me at all but not bad music

The starts album its good but in the middle its bad, strange sounds because mi lower vote

Josuck >>> Jochime I concur, indeed, that the second is greater than the first. Infection by boring diagnosed. Laughter echoing from mine own placement in the chamber of observation, notwithd. Stange creatures crawling forth from other than the lake of Hali brings forth shallow observations of mortality and the unknown. Lyrically, ignoramuscient insultation of both the artful and the knowledgeable. Sungd praises from unfathomable amalgamations of those made whole by the weed, and those described by the last character gazing in a mirror. Sonically uninteresting, resting between the worst of tintinnabulationary guitar masturbation and uninspired use of base electronic assets.

Was interesting at the start then just got boring towards the middle

I don't get it.

i'm sure this would have hit for me if i had given it a chance in younger days. but listening to it in full for the first time today it's not really my jam. it's sweet but i kind of instinctively tune it out.

just not my thing!

Do you realize is the only good song on this

This is definitely an interesting concept for an album, just the execution left more to be desired. The first few songs seemed like the band was getting their bearings straight, then "In the Morning of the Magicians" and "Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell" were good, but then the back half of the album just teeters off.

This album felt disjointed.

the best part about this album is the strays Radiohead caught in the reviews

I am beginning to notice that I really don't like white guys singing everything in their falsetto voice. It always sounds to strained. The vocals really take away from my enjoyment, it might be a good album musically. But I don't like it

One to come back to. Do you realize?? is probably one of my top 100 songs of all time, but the album in which it is situated is rather disappointing. The album starts off well and is probably something to enjoy whilst carrying out mundane chores. The folky guitar and vocals are the highlights. It then gets progressively weirder as they start to settle into the theme of Yoshimi undertaking this galactic battle. If you are trying to go about your day with this as a backdrop, good luck to you my friend. All we have is now is where they frankly lost me. So all in all a mixed experience

My lips be flaming. Very strange album, quite crazy even. Not a fan

hiçbir şarkısı benlik değil. son şarkının başlangıcı fight club esintisi verdi btw.

Ei oikein lähtenyt missään kohtaan. Soundi hyvä mutta kuitenkin vähän tausta musiikiksi itselle jää.

Good, but not a 3

Ughhhhhh

It was just not really my cup of tea. It sounded pretty boring

It’s time to accept that The Flaming Lips is a very boring band with the odd standout track. This album is no exception. Also Wayne Coyne just seems like a bad dude. For every good track, there are 3-4 super dull ones. Wacky can be good but it helps when you’ve got the melodies to back it up. I’ll give the production a thumbs up. Best: Fight Test Worst: take your pick, plenty to choose from

instrumentals and production is very interesting and creates a clear vibe, but vocals are flat and feel expressionless, bringing the whole experience down - super fun concept tho

I hated this. I knew off one or two songs, but it was clinky clanky (best way I can describe). I understand why it might be people's vibe, it has the mellow somber vibe, but the strange instrument interruptions made it weird for me.

I don't get the high ratings—boring, unremarkable, nothing memorable, generic synth pop rock.

Unremarkable

Kind of OK but it's a bit too ethereal to really enjoy.

Boring and nondescript. Really not into it at all.

I think I like the idea of the Flaming Lips being out there shaking up expectations, a little more than I actually enjoy their albums Probably the sense of the unexpected that I appreciate, and sometimes one or two of their tunes will land in a way I like Keep at it guys!

For some reason I found this album really dull, despite realizing it shares a lot of similarities with other artists and albums I've enjoyed over the years, and I think it probably all comes down to the vocals. The lead singer's vocal style just puts me to sleep. I do think there's plenty to like on this album but unfortunately I disliked the vocals that much that I just couldn't appreciate it it all. Also that rip off of Father and Son at the start is a pretty unfortunate introduction to this band's work. Favourite tracks: Do You Realize?, All We Have Is Now, Approaching Pavonis Mons

I may have liked this a little bit more had I listened to it on a different day. As it was I came to it after an extended journey into some really old school sounding industrial bands a friend recommended me. This album, on the back of those, just felt so tame it jarred. I was never a big Flaming Lips listener in the first place as they’ve never really been my thing. Sadly, they continue to remain not really my thing.

It’s ok, sounds like cafe music.

I hope I don’t have to listen to this band again.

i can see why the album is a classic, and it has interesting ideas. some songs resonated with me, but overall i didn't love it. the theme of robots gaining sentience and emotions rings hollow to me at the moment.

The songwriting and production here is competent but the neo-hippie/post-psychedelic vibe of this record doesn't ring my bell, nor do the moon-eyed and/or bizarro lyrics (in "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, Pt. 1", it sounds like singer Wayne Coyne is just reading a list of bullet points). It also doesn't help that Coyne has a thin, colorless voice that doesn't do much to sell these songs. There are some pretty instrumental stretches here (especially in the closing track) but they're not compelling enough to make me want to spin this album again.

5 seconds in: this is groovy... not sure i love all of the singing over each other in "The Test"- funny ending sounds squishy and outerspace-y, reminds me of the red blob guys in stray oh theyre screaming. 2-3/5

Good in parts

Pretty undistinctive. I confess to not giving it my full attention, listening to it while following a recipe. I think it was the vocalist I found least interesting. There were a couple instrumentals--full songs or portions I don't remember--that sounded more intriguing.

God Damn, I hate Indie! Blah! Self-indulgent crap only a fragile, over- educated, over-medicated twat might enjoy. Sometimes that’s me. Damn it, I hate when that happens!

I don’t know why I had a synthesizer farting in my ear for this entire album. Really wasn’t a huge fan of this one. Whiny vocals coupled with just strange sound effects behind the music gave it a much too silly atmosphere. Do You Realise is kind of okay and stands out as essentially the only track I’d return to, but even then is ruined by the weirdest ambient sounds?

It was fine. Jangly guitars and slightly tuneful meandering with futuristic phaser noises

Shite. Clever shite, but shite nonetheless.

I finished it more for out of obligación than enjoyment; it's not my musical style, calm music isn' really my thing, or at least music similar to that

No es mi estilo, no lo escucharía en mi día a día, pero tiene lindos sonidos.

i didnt like that, the sound was so strange

Partially known. One song I love and then progressively less interesting.

Very meh, songs strange songs

Not my style of music. I really did not like it.

Mellow and obnoxious.

Came back to this one a few days after it was recommended. Interesting sound, don't completely hate it, but i don't think i would come back to it that much, just not my style. i'm sure some people love this sound and will enjoy it, but not a personal favorite for me. kinda wanted to give up on it before it finished, but finished it. i just dont care much for the kind of childish sound, cutesy sound effects, vocal delivery, lyrics. idk just eh

Still not convinced…

One song in and I'm liking this much better than the other album they had on the list. It gave back that goodwill pretty fast. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1 has great music but these guys cannot quit with the lyrics that are better suited to a comedy album. The up and down continues as Pt. 2 is not good. They should have called this album "Music You Love When You're High and Literally No Other Time". The Shins do this music better. Do You Realize?? is the hit from this album and on some commercial. The lead singer's voice is cartoonish in the worst way.

Something about Yoshimi makes me feel gross. The druggy vibe isn't fun. To me it feels more like "I felt like crap and took too much which makes me feel extra crappy" more than anything else. The lyrics are dorky and the instrumentation is annoying. I can't imagine sitting through a three hour live version of this.

it was alright, some cool sounds that almost won me over but something was not clicking for me

-not my favorite flaming lips album -nothing of note to really say about it -it was fine background noise

There are so many things happening all the time and none of them are interesting Highlights: "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1", "In the Morning of the Magicians"

I think it's time for people to recognize what I've known for a long time. The Flaming Lips are not a special band. This album is better than the rest of their oeuvre but I will not ever seek this out again.

Never understood the hype for this album, it's really not that good. Is it experimental? Yes. But that doesn't make it good.

One of those albums that make me feel gaslit. Highly praised but it's a bad version of father and son followed by boring generic songs. Extra point just because some of the bass lines are decent

2.5/5. Not overly exciting but nothing bad. Definitely some good tracks. Average

Meh. Not terrible. Not great. Just meh.

I do like this album. Highlights are high. A lot of it really passes me by though

It’s …. Strange.

I didn't particularly enjoy this one.

2.0 - Weak

This album doesn't belong in the list: It has no authentic musical message, just a mishmash of whatever was cool at the time it came out, laid on top of generic melodies and bland monotonous vocals. Also, how lame is adding a sample of a cheering crowd to a non live album? How's that not exactly like a laugh track?

Love the albumart but the music is forgettable and frankly kinda all over the place. Too mellow while trying to be creative results in 50 minutes droning electropop.

Un-offensive, bordering on bland. Melodic in parts but this is music to send you to sleep on the sofa on a Sunday afternoon. Opening an album with what seems to be a plagarised track doesn't set the scene well.

Me he aburrido. Es de esos discos que parece que me tendrían que gustar y al final nada. En general a este grupo no termino de pillarle el punto. Me guardo "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1" y poco más.

It has a unique sound, which I respect but there aren't really any songs here which stand out to me. The album does mesh well together though

the lyrics ruined everything

Flaming Lips have always annoyed me a bit, too coy by half, but I quite enjoyed going back to this, Fight Test is a really good song. Tom.

Some nice melodies but mostly profoundly irksome

i genuinely did not like this, not my style, some songs were good such as ybtprp2 but p1 was horrendous, was expecting something along the lines of since i left you by the avalanches in terms of production but it's giving bowie-sparks lovechild

Eh, this was pretty mid. Nothing wrong with it but it just wasn’t that interesting to me either

I found this one to be pretty boring tbh,not really my thing at all. "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 2" was pretty cool. Also the cover art is fantastic. Other than that I really wasnt interested.

I'm convinced you need to be tripping balls to truly appreciate this album. I did enjoy the "flow" it had and would love to see how they make all the different weird noises scattered throughout. If The Strokes is the alt/punk kid in high school, The Flaming Lips is the alt/stoner kid. Didn't realize "Do You Realize??" (haha) was part of this album and honestly, I get why it was the only stand out but it also didn't seem to really fit with the rest of the album. Another ablum that wasn't really for me (I was ready for it to be over by the last song) but glad I have it a shot.

not bad but not groundbreaking to me. some songs have "filler" spaces/moments and are fairly repetetive - like they dont know what to put in them

The songs are not memorable and enjoyable, the sci-fi-like instrumentation is irritating.

Never heard a lick of their music. Only know of the singer running around the top of crowds in a bubble. Very boring music.

So cringey

i only recognize one song on this album and I remember it being in the movie 50 first dates (is it a remake??? idk). not my style but good listen. should have paid more attention to the lyrics.

Another mediocre album

not my vibe

Ab „in the Morning of the Magician“ fand ich das Album sehr eindrücklich. Das Album war sehr experimentell wie auch das Thema und hat aber trotzdem Spaß gemacht zu hören.

what i imagine someone who is performative + indie would listen to - honestly, not memorable? i think it was really interesting that the album had some robotic elements to it but i could not get through the full album since i felt so bored.
