Reviews (page 11 of 13)

Not bad, if you're in the mood for some Chic-style funky soul music.

This is essentially CHIC in everything but name. Nice, but nothing special and not much variation. 3/5

There’s a short drum roll to kickstart the record and then Nile Rodger’s guitar riff and the funky bass groove hit the speakers. After 50 seconds you are in no doubt who is at work here, Nile & Edwards are part of this family. The first two tracks are legendary dance tracks. The imprint that songs on this album have had on society is huge. There isn’t a wedding party that hasn’t played at least one of these classic disco tracks. Somebody Loves Me slows the pace and stays around too long, a little filler! Then we have the mid-paced banger Thinking Of You with a gorgeous guitar riff running through it, and then the crown jewel. We Are Family, Sister Sledge’s calling card and a gorgeous disco classic. For me the album quality drops a little on the three closing tracks, but I’m not a real fan of disco or soul. What is undeniable is that this is an iconic record. The Chic Organisation headed by Nile Rodger’s has influenced so much music in my life. This won’t be a record I would put on at home, but I have danced many times to the big tracks completely lost In music.

good bbq/cookout, sunday cleaning music.

That kind of disco isn't my thing but my in-laws were visiting and they actually liked the music I put on for once, so thanks for that.

I wouldn't call it a disco masterpiece, but it's a nice and enjoyable album. The ballads are quite boring, but the upbeat and dance songs are A1.

It was okay.

It is an okay album, relaxing and nice to listen to.

That Nile Rogers guitar is so iconic, immediately recognized it in the first song. Such a great album to groove to.

A classic song surrounded by many other solid songs on this album. I enjoyed the album as it felt like a reinvention of some classic Motown albums. Aside from the big hit this album has a lot to offer and will be revisited. The vocals are great and it has a nice blend of disco funk. 7.2/10

disco tinged melodies punctuated by prominent bass lines. this type of music isn’t normally my thing, although they are very talented. having said that, “easier to love” is pretty damn catchy.

ive never liked bonus tracks on albums specifically remixes. for me it takes away from the original song and makes the whole album feel much more commercial. makes it feel less genuine yknow? liked the other tracks especially the first it's got good bass

Funky disco

Solid 3.5/5, with two tracks that standout, and Nile Rogers producing is always a plus, but feels a bit too generic and bit difficult to listen as an album.

Very disco , of the smooth kind- Kathy Sledge has an amazing voice, I enjoyed this

These guys pumped out some magic in the 70s. A solid album for sure.

A classy and boppin little album of cool, cool R and B with more than a tinge of disco. I enjoyed this.

Honestly not really my cup of tea

Nice and funky

Its aight

Album was alright, not a huge fan of disco but I like how every song has a different flow. Not a bad album at all but not really something I would come back to. 6/10

Rytmikästä hyvää soul funkkia

Can't relate but not bad.

"We are family" was the theme of the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates (my memory most every time I hear this song). "He's the Greatest Dancer is good track as well.

Solid album. 3 monster hits and everything else is great R&B/Disco music. The disco era had some crap, but this is a good representation of the better disco music available. Really enjoyed this.

On your mark, ready, set, let's go Dancefloor pro, I know you know I go psycho when my new joint hit (woo) Just can't sit Gotta get jiggy wit' it, ooh, that's it Now honey, honey, come ride DKNY all up in my eye You gotta Prada bag with a lotta stuff in it (uh, uh, uh) Give it to your friend, let's spin Everybody lookin' at me, glancin' the kid Wishin' they was dancin' the jig Here with this handsome kid Ciga-cigar right from Cuba-Cuba I just bite it It's for the look, I don't light it Illway the an-may on the ance-day oor-flay Give it up jiggy, make it feel like foreplay (woo) Yo, my cardio is infinite Ha ha Big Willie style's all in it

Sometime in the early 80s my family was having new carpet installed, so there in our main hallway was a 12 foot carpet roll. My siblings and myself must've annoyed the living hell out of our parents by walking back and forth on the thing singing 'We Are Family' over and over. But then again, we were occupied… While this is really a Chic album, Sister Sledge did the right thing by handing the reins of their projects to Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards. They are answer to the argument 'Disco Sux'. 3.5/5.

Kinda fun

Does anyone remember when they took the song "We Are Family" and used it in a commercial for "Pepsi Free?" "We Are Pepsi Free"? No? Just me? Anyway, the first song... "He's the Greatest Dancer.".. I hate to be pick on lyrics, but "One night in a disco..." (um what rhymes with 'disco...?' Ooooh, I know!) "on the outskirts of Frisco..." I just feel like they did not try very hard there. The hit.... the deluxe edition has remixes of it and "Lost In Music." Definitely did not need that. But even so i felt that the song kind of went on a little too long. Besides the first song, the other songs i liked. I liked the whole violins thing. It worked well with a lot of the music. Probably my favorite was "One More Time". But most of the songs felt... light to me. Not a deep meaning in any of them. But I guess there wasn't supposed to be, right?

I'm torn - the two biggest singles (He's the Greatest Dancer, We Are Family) are massive. Wonderful vocals and sublime funky instrumental backing. The other two singles (Lost in Music, Thinking of You) are not as good but pretty good. The funky beats are still there, but the vocals aren't as outstanding. Maybe Kathy Sledge was the real jewel because vocals are best on her tracks (3 out of the 4 singles plus one other) and the one single where she's not lead (Lost in Music) aren't as good. And then when the sisters sing together, the harmony has a dated ho-hum sound. Kathy's vocals sound timeless. And the non-singles just don't have the same cool instrumental work in my opinion. The album is a definite 3 for me and close to a 3.5 but not a 4..

4 or 5 great songs.

Loved: He's The Greatest Dancer, Thinking of You Liked: One More Time OK: The rest Nice funky disco album not my style but would definitely add the first 2 songs to playlists. 2/5

That was fun -- I'd have that on in the background again. 3.5 stars

Disco!

This was alright. Very disco, which I kind of like.

We Are Family is a classic but this album is not good. I don’t think disco is really meant to be in album form. Light 3.

Anout as good as disco gets, but still disco. 5.5/10.

Day 1 I'm rating these albums song by song and then taking the added total to come to a score. I know this probably isn't the best or most fair way to rate them but I think it will be best in terms of overall listening and coming back to songs. I'm also listening to the albums by searching them on YouTube and going to an album playlist. Also, take these reviews with a grain of salt, compared to a lot of people I've listened to very little music. Hopefully these 1001 days will expand my music palette. He's the Greatest Dancer - 9/10 - this song is awesome Lost in Music - 7/10 Somebody Loves Me - 5/10 Thinking of You - 6/10 We Are Family - 7/10 - overplay probably affected the score but it's still a good one Easier to Love - 7/10 You're a Friend to Me - 5/10 One More Time - 5/10 *I'm not including the 2 remixes for We Are Family and Lost and Music since I don't think a remix does too much for a song.* Overall: The scores add up to 51/80 or about 64%. Until tomorrow.

Such disco. Great lines in He's the Greatest Dancer \"One night in a disco on the outskirts of Frisco \" and Lost in Music \"I Quit! my 9-5\". We Are Family is such a classic.

The amount of cocaine and people on their way to pound town while listening to this album is off the charts. Sniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiif

In reviewing the credits, I see that this record should be stamped "Powered by Chic" since Nigel Rogers and Bernard Evans wrote and produced the songs and most of the back-up musicians were Chic members. The sisters were talented, but were in search of the allusive first hit for most of the seventies until NR & BE came to the rescue. "We Are Family" is one of the songs from the disco era that I most despised, but listening to it now I can appreciate the signature guitar and bass from the Chic guys. "He's the Greatest Dancer" & "Lost in Music" are tracks I reacquainted myself with over last decade and quite like. The ballads are cringe-worthy.

Respect.

Not bad

3.5/5. Nile Rodgers is a very talented individual.

Noice.

All quite similar sounding songs. Good disco however

A solid disco/soul album with a handful of memorable bangers, I've obviously heard the title track before (who hasn't), so I had an idea of what sort of thing was in store for me. I wasn't too keen on the slower songs although they weren't awful, but overall the album made for a really easy listening experience and a good intro into the 1001 albums I should hear before I die. Favourite songs: He's the Greatest Dancer, Lost in Music, One More Time

We are family is obviously a 5 star song, and while the rest of the album is fun and upbeat, it doesn’t all feel like 5 stars to me. 3.5 stars overall

Never listed to this and only know We Are Family from weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, etc. Not my preferred genre, but really strong vocals and a good grove.

Fine disco. The hits were great and the rest were fine. I’m not angry that I heard this but I don’t think I’d ever put it on again.

A fun 70s disco album with a couple of huge songs I especially liked He's The Greatest Dancer, for its amazing dance groove. 3 stars

Kiitoksia albumista! Kiitollisuutta.. osoitan... 3 tähtöstä 🤩.. Noh yks läks... Toinen kuoli.. neljä.. kaksi.. keskiarvo... tähtösten.. heh elämästä.. kirkossa kävi virsiä veisaamassa... silti kuoltiin heh.. 1/3.. 2/3 odotellessa..Hoi! Albumit nuppiin Hoi! ennenkuin hauta hautaa............................

Some fun songs and a hit

I only knew their big hit We Are Familly. Some very fun 70's bops and ballads. Favorites: One More Time, Somebody Loves Me -- and of course We Are Family. Found Free on Spotify, now THIS song is a good one.

I'd never listened to the whole record from Sister Sledge but, like most, was familiar with the album's title track We Are Family through all kinds of media. Taken as a whole this is a solid entry into the disco funk genre. I enjoyed it a good deal for what it was. And, this record makes no bones about what it thinks are its best songs, from titling the album after one of them to other clues. For example, I listened to the 1995 remaster which adds as bonus tracks 2 additional remixes of We Are Family and 2 more Lost in Music remixes as well. Some unevenness is forgiven and, in all honesty, I think this record is also responsible for the band Deee-lite like a decade later.

Boogie boogie disco classic

Quality disco-funk, rest of the album inevitably struggles to match up to the big hitters

Quite fun, bubbly pop. It reminded me of a supermarket lemon mousse. Very manufactured, but the idea is there. Without Nile Rogers it would have been unbearable.

"Gettin' jiggy wit it!" (Gah, curses Will Smith!) Definitely feel all of Nile Rodgers' contributions on this album. Some of the tracks were a bit drab, but overall I had a good old boogie to the popular disco tracks. 3.5

Great singles. So-so album tracks.

Just like that Chic album, I don't feel like I'm the right person to judge an old disco LP (like many others in this group). The first three singles taken out of that album are great (including the hit "We Are Family", obviously). The fourth single is a little lackluster in comparison. And everything else sounds like "anecdotes in music history" to me. I can't help feeling that the album format is not kind to such sorts of old genres originally designed for the dancefloor. Maybe someone should write a book named "1001 *12-Inch Records* You Should Listen To Before You Die". I'm pretty sure Niles Rodgers would be quoted quite a few times in that *other* book... Number of albums left to review: 719 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 140 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 69 (including this one) Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 77

banco pero chill. 7/10

I wish every song wasn't so repetitive. Cut 1-2 minutes from each track and this would have been 4 stars.

I think the Sledge Sisters should seriously consider renaming themselves the Angelic Vocal Sisters. These ladies have the most pleasant voices to hear. This music is definitely made for the disco club, at least the upbeat tracks. The bass is grooving, inducing hip swaying dance moves. It works best for me as a background accompaniment to something else: a party, Wordling, or maybe cleaning the house.

stay timeless glisten sparkle shine sunday morn

Classic Discoey soul....We are family will forever have a place in my heart and mind, after watching Willie Stargell and the Pirates win the World Series....but, beyond that...just not really my cup of tea....

Nice pop soul album, cool to listen to and as amateur of the genre I felt like some upbeat tempo were nice touch. Great hits in the album and good cohésion ! Small 3.5/5

Nile Rogers is a bit of a genius. This is him...Lets Dance by Bowie is him. Like a Virgin is him. Also Chic, early hip-hop, the 80s, Daft Punk. He is a giant of late 20th century music. Anyway 4 massive hits on here that are joyfully stretched in their original form. I just don't know if 70s disco is s bit of a cheap art form. That sounds awfully snobbish. 3.5

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this. Really catchy riffs, discovered plenty that have been sampled on other works and it was really easy to listen to.

Nothing special, a bit too repetitive but didn't annoy me that much

Lots of classic disco, perfectly satisfying. Captures a mood and an era quite distant from today. Exciting but maybe not 100% for me

Old school funk. Good but probably wouldn’t listen again

Four massive hit singles and a lot of cheese. You can very much hear that this is a Chic album in everything but name. The singles are great, but some of the schmaltz was a bit of a chore to wade through. Lost In Music is the banger here, and almost as good as the version by The Fall. 3.5 stars.

Four killer singles, rather weak elsewhere. This has the Chic fingerprints all over it. Sister Sledge are all about the good times, and not break up ballads. This would have made for a brilliant, brilliant 12" EP. A little too diluted with all the slushy stuff.

Thoroughly enjoyable. First two songs were really cool

-A perfectly fine soul/R&B album. Some nice bass lines throughout -It has the "We Are Family" song

p425. 1979. 3.5 stars. Perfect snapshot of classy late 70s disco, packed with hits and with Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards on top form. Well done of its kind, but as with all disco it outstays its welcome. Not essential listening.

Very cool. Goes on a bit long.

3.5 - Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards sound incredible on guitar and bass. And there are some perennial classic dance hits on this record. But, again, I associate disco music with wedding parties.

A lot of these songs had interesting things going on in them. I just wish some of them were shorter, or that they progressed further. Still, not bad. My favourite songs were He's the Greatest Dancer and We Are Family.

It’s like each individual song is good but they all sound the same and I find the album generally boring. 2.5

Classic sound, but not my jam for a whole album

The sisters sledged this one.

I like

Prefs : He's the Greatest Dancer, Lost In Music, Thinking of You, We Are Family Moins pref: You're a Friend to Me

Not normally my style but I enjoyed it.

She has a beautiful voice. If I were into disco I'd give this another listen.

Okej, funkigt disco album.

It was okay, some iconic tracks but bit formulaic

Better than I expected. The album has a good flow, and can't really argue with good R&B/soul music.

I'm not really into R&B but found this to be a decent album. We Are Family, Lost in Music and He's the Greatest Dancer were the highlights.

Great R&B record, that's been sampled a ton throughout the years. Cool to hear the real thing from front to back.

Weird to hear more of We Are Family other than just the chorus in an advert

i <3 disco

A couple of bops.

What? What? Big Willie Style? Yes! Right off the bat, I'm getting jiggy in my seat. It's like the beat walked right up on stage and slapped me across the face. But those are some brave rhymes - disco ~ Frisco, dance ~ trance, conceit ~ complete, still ~ kill. Still, disco of this sort makes me think of that scene in The Jerk with Steve Martin, or maybe that one time I actually watched Studio 54 - a creepy, over-sexualized meat market that would never fly today (at least not this overtly) - and you know there were some serious penicillin prescriptions floating around those clubs. The same vibe pretty much continues - "we're lost in music, caught in a trap, never turning back". It's probably the twirling brown-tinted disco lights combined with the ecstasy and the syphilis. But then - "we are family"! One of the mainstays of 70s nights at the local dance club back in the 90s, it brought everyone to the dancefloor like the Derry Girls during Rock the Boat (if you know, you know). On a side note, I wonder if they have "early aughts" nights at the club now, where everyone gets dressed up like Destiny's Child and complains about Nickleback? But I digress...The rest of the album was pretty forgettable, but bonus points for sampling Will Smith in the opening number (oh, wait...)

We are family obviously a banger and I really liked he’s the greatest dancer All around super groovy, bass is sick throughout

Good vibes Overall.

sister sledge - we are family 1979 - disco r&b album that you’ll definitely recognize some songs from even if you dont think you know them fav - somebody loves me - super vulnerable and delicate vocal performance that sells the emotion of the song - great string part halfway through - 10/10 song least fav - we are family - by far the cheesiest and most dated song on here - also doesnt have the same fantastic lead vocals as most other songs on here

Finally got to know who is behind this timeless hit :p All songs sound like the famous we are family

Funky. Well produced. A little boring

Disco estándar, We Are Family es la más conocida por mucho. Nada muy sorprendente sin ser necesariamente malo.

I thought it was fun to listen to the birth of a million samples! The greatest dancer and we are family are bops, forever and always. I really liked easier time love, and somebody loves me was so painfully sad.

loving the vibe love the fun sounds to reminisce about we are family and the other songs were fun as well.

2 strong childhood memories associated with the legendary title track: 1 - dad driving me and friends to my summer birthday party with at least 2-3 times the legal limit of 9 year olds literally crammed into the station wagon, all of us having the time of our lives belting out this song (which was the summer hit and on the radio every 15 minutes) 2 - Willie Stargell Check out the bass on this album (Bernard Edwards - RIP) - especially on the title track and "Thinking Of You" - an album highlight. Very VERY 1979. That could hit different ways depending on your view or mood but I for one could almost always go for homemade cake, wiffle ball, hide and seek, a classic World Series, and fun singalongs that remind me of it all. 6/10 3 stars.

landmark recognizable disco-funk chock-full of samples. Definitely a vibe, but maybe not for a whole album. 3.5/5

Pretty good stuff

Funksticles

first listen funky and dancy

I can clearly see why some [many] of the tracks here have become classics, even if this type of music isn't my regular cup of coffee. Nice detour from the usual!

Definitely carried by Nile Rodgers; the backing tracks mostly groove with that guitar, and the rest of the band too, but the songs themselves are mostly just "pretty alright." The album definitely loses any of its steam in the ballads, unfortunately.

What the hell dude, I just had a Chic album two days ago. No one man should have all that disco. I'm gonna get disco poisoning. It's disco all right. I don't think they intended this to be played while driving a car but it's funky enough to be enjoyable background music. Nothing mind-blowing though.

En håndfuld vanvittigt stærke sange; særligt Dancer, Lost in Music, titelnummeret og Easier to Love. 3,5

Some real hits that last to this day.

Funky, but kinda samey

catchy beat. some great tracks but only a few I would come back to. one of those albums u know is good but ur not crazy about.

Disco, but really good disco

Not a fan of disco

Olin kauhuissani että ei vittu ihan kauheeta. En edes muistanut kuinka hittipainoitteinen tää on. Aika peruskauraa sinkkujen osalta mun vinyylikeikoilla. Toki samalla siirappista mut jotenki toimii. 3/5

Hyvä fiilis ja hitit toimii. Etenkin Greatest Dancer rullaa kyllä niin kivasti vuodesta toiseen. Ehkä muita kohokohtia liian vähän, että antaisin nelosta. 3,5/5.

Pas trop ma tasse de teh

on commence un peu à s'ennuyer

3’8 Kinda chill. Perfect for october evenings close but near to rain.

Disco is the best. 5 Maybe just a 4 Maybe a 3. Those remixes were really boring.

Solid first album. Wasn’t what I was expecting but a decent change up. Excited for the next one.

Solid disco groove

I like Nile Rogers, but endless variations of his disco guitar riff become a little tiresome after a while. The songs are all nice enough, but a couple go on as if they were 12" singles - fine if I want to listen to an extended version but such things do not belong on a standard album in my opinion. There is a little variety, so it's not all disco, and it's like a Chic album only better. Those overly long songs, though, have made it a three-star rather than four-star album.

Mjög næs, kemur á óvart hvað ég fílaði rólegu lögin vel líka.

Skemntileg

alright and funky

Some classics. Firmly catagorised as 'not bad'.

So good individually, but put all these great songs on one album and after about twenty minutes you start vomiting.

This was fine "somebody loves me" is a pretty song

Very good album as a whole. First two tracks were enjoyable to listen to- the title track might be a little over-saturated in standard radio/commercial play, but it's still a great song. There were some slow points in the middle in the end, but overall still liked it - solid 3.5/5. Nile Rodgers' influence is also strong throughout.

It starts so so well but there's some absolute shit near the end. I also hate Spotify adding on remixes and bonus tracks

Another disco classic. Everyone knows that disco is at it's best when it's fun, light, and easy. For that reason, I can't really care for the slower ballads because they end up losing the momentum of the album. Nile Rodgers is an obvious name to shoutout given his track record, but listen for Bernard Edwards on bass as well. He lays down the best grooves and has a track record that is just as storied as Rodgers'. Anyway, pretty good! This is the sorta stuff that would inspire all-time great such as Daft Punk so I'll pay my respects.

Not bad but also won’t search it out.

Not bad We Are Family is a fabulous song and elevates this album to classic status but the rest of the album is pretty mundane and strictly follows the formula. The formula is good though... so there's that 3.5 🌟

Banger after banger on this one. Not the sort of music I'd usually choose to listen to, but this is good.

Solid late-70s disco, and We Are Family is iconic. As with a lot of disco, it can get a little same-y throught the album, but still a fun listen.

An important album for Disco- and dance lovers. Whether this also applies only to listening, I am not sure. (5/10) FT: We are Family, Lost in Music

Desto bättre är He's the Greatest Dancer. Bästa låt: Thinking of You.

Pretty good album. Easy to get people up and dancing to a couple of these songs. As for listening alone, it does drag on a bit.

This is basically heavier porno music with words. I mean, it's fine, but let's call it what it is.

3.5/5 nice disco sounds, I'll have to relisten

Quality factory output but not particularly inspiring.

Funky, fun album. Good vibes, performances are great!

Nunca me ha emocionado la canción We are family. Pero bueno, cantan muy bien. 3

Alright

1979 - Disco intro. Classic disco sound. Great crisp vocals, smooth, calming effect. Some pop tones and lyrics, but its funk drive makes it very listenable. Nothing outstanding either. Many song are somewhat forgettable.

good upbeat zone out. maybe for cooking

Decent album. One well known song. It definitely had a 70s vibe to it.

Funky and fun. Their influence is apparent from the first second of the first track. Greatest Dancer is sampled in Will Smith's Gittin' Jiggy Wit' It, and the rest is history. The Disco genre is tricky. It blew up and then died a miserable death, but what Sister Sledge does is not lean too far into it. The Bee Gees did a similar thing, but maybe occasionally let the disco define them, which hurt them. This stands a little more apart. The title track is definitely the crown Jewell, and that song is timeless.

The songs each drag on a bit too long and follow the same tempo more or less. It’s not a bad disco album, and having a hit like We Are Family definitely helps as well as a good run time. I think the lack of an even bigger song or two is what keeps it from being great.

Decent but nothing special, songs all sound very similar

groovy funk, but gets a bit samey as the song continues

Great - but maybe faded glory because everything is so familiar? A lot of absolute classics.

The list of personnel involved with this album is studded with legends. A fine album if disco is your bag. What about the rest of us though?

I didn't note anything so much special about it, but I can get a lot of samples that were got from this album to create great modern hip-hop songs, so I got how much it influences modern songs, reason that I think that justifies the presence of the album in this list. For the album itself, it was a nice experience, but just it.

Good times. The Sledge Sisters kick it off with a song dedicated to Matt (He's the Greatest Dancer) and keep the floor at a light simmer for the whole album. I love the positive family and friendship vibes throughout - it's hard to pull off so much joy without seeming corny or blind. We Are Family I can't feel anymore since the it was covered countless times by 90s/2000s TRL diva ensembles at award shows, but that's not the Sledge's fault. Good times B+

After hearing the Daft Punk influence I looked it up and realized this is a Niles Rogers album, which doesn’t surprise me given that funky Niles Rogers strumming throughout. Wondering if this is the first album with the Niles Rogers sound? The singing on this album has a very distinct sound, I think it’s the vocal harmonies from the chorus style sound, very enigmatic. This is a tight album, sounds good. A little one note. I was leaning 4 but by the end I shifted to 3. PS They should get credit for gettin’ jiffy wit it.

I was surprised that I liked this album as much as I did. Positive, catchy songs and great R&B guitar grooves. Probably won't listen to it again but I enjoyed it. 3 stars.

Buen disco disco. Agradable

A good album that evokes some honest emotion, but a little repetitive. Of course I love the standout single, but the rest of it sort of faded into the background for me.

He's The Greatest Dancer "Oh, what, wow / He's the greatest dancer"

Best dancer 🕺🏼

I only knew We are Family the song before this. The rest of the album has some solid disco tracks but nothing else as memorable as the title track.

An all time classic anthemic song in We are Family. I don't think I've been to a wedding without this song playing! The whole album is very disco pop and familiar sounding. Best: We are Family, Thinking of you. Worst: Somebody Loves Me 3.5 Stars

While not exactly an *original* concept, the fact the title track here has been adopted by the Campbell clan at any and all gatherings with a DJ gives this album a minimum of 3 stars. I'd really like to give it a 3.5. The fact that the next day I can only remember the title track and the one that Gettin' Jiggy Wit It ripped off... err I mean sampled... means it falls to the 3 star side. Enjoyable listen though!

This album is most well known for the song "We Are Family," but the entire album has a similar vibe/tune. This R&B/disco music is great to put on in the background of a cocktail party, or really during any time that some chill, but groovy music is needed.

This was a fun listen

Excellent Funk & Soul record. "He's the greatest Dancer" and "We are Family" top tracks

Nota:5/10

Fun disco

This is a great listen, very nostalgic, fantastic production values, lots of familiar songs that are well known for good reason. I liked it.

Valitettavasti lento jäi kuitenkin lyhyeksi ja edes We Are Family -hitti ei riittänyt nostamaan levyä kolmosen yläpuolelle. R&B fiilistely ei oikein tahdo upota.

My score is pretty much entirely based on strong legacy, songwriting, superb musical proficiency and an interesting sampling history. Mad respect for this, although it's a bit too slushy and cheesy for my personal tastes. 7/10

1 well known song, nothing else really caught our ears.

Starts off solid, the hits are there, then the album filler is rehashed hits

Nice old disco music

I liked some of the songs, though they weren't my style. "He's the greatest dancer" is pretty catchy.

Disco setenetero estándar. Sin hits, pero solvente.

Disco, R & B. Soul. Funk. No está mal. Bastante movido.

I get it. A little repetitive.

Too Jazzy and upbeat

Paar gute Grooves aber insgesamt eher langweilig.

The hits are: - "He's the greatest dancer" - "Lost in music" - "Thinking of you" - "We are family" But there were some others later in the album that I enjoyed as well. It was a fun listen for sure. It's happy music.

Welcome back to Disco! It seems sweet and light... like cotton candy. Nothing controversial...

Never listened to that album. Know Sister Sledge for "We Are Family" song. Top track: We Are Familiy.

Oh baby the album starts with that lick they used for Gettin Jiggy Wit It, now I know where it comes from! Of course "We Are Family" is a classic but I did not know who the artist was. This is really eye opening for me. Some of the songs and themes are just way too feel good earnest to even be enjoyable. Glad I heard this but probably won't seek it out in the future.

Overall the album is good. Not all the songs are hits for sure but I didn’t hate my life. I enjoyed the upbeat positive experience

I didn’t know they did Jiggy

First few songs are great but wasn’t into the rest

Some good songs some are just a bit slow and boring though

Funkayyyyy Discoooo. First track is quite nice. Then it sort of went downhill for me. Not bad at all, just not my thing. I feel like a broken record with that phrase.

2.5 rounded up. Kinda boring.

Favorites: He's the Greatest Dancer, We Are Family, Lost in Music, Thinking of You, Easier to Love, One More Time Primarily a back up band, Sister Sledge made a name for themselves with this album. Produced and written by the legendary Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic. There was surprisingly little to no collaboration between Chic and the sisters in the creation of the songs. Nile Rodgers has said it is the best LP he has produced. 'We are Family' track was recorded in one take, with Kathy Sledge not knowing the lyrics ahead of time. Nile Rodgers would feed her one line at a time through headphones to make it sound spontaneous.

Familiarity: 3/10 Notes: Classic Disco sound, unfortunately not a sound I can take a whole lot of. Slogged through it, begrudgingly. True Rating: 6/10

funky and groovy. better than I expected knowing the famous song on the album.

I really enjoyed the album. However, I'm never a fan of a bunch of remixes in the album. 1/3 of the album was remixes, which is pretty lame.

Didn’t realise that all of sister sledges hits were on one album!

Classic girl group sound, funny song about how well a guy in the club is dancing and a good one about love.

couple good listens, the song we are family is a classic

3.5 . Some solid tunes on this album. Funky goodness on a monday

This is a great listen, very nostalgic, fantastic production values, lots of familiar songs that are well known for good reason. I liked it.

Good vibes, will probaby try to listen while I have sexy time.

This is another album that I think is generally good, but I don't understand why it's on this list. It's a disco album, so far as I can tell it's not a groundbreaking disco album. It has some big hits on it, but I'm left wondering why I should listen to this album in particular out of the disco genre. Not a fault of this album, more of an issue with the list itself 3/5

Title track bangs obviously and it's a dang classic u know. Nice to have heard the whole album the song is from, nice funky vibes. Chill, easy listen for some upbeat good tunes.

Menevät biisit toimii kympillä ja ilman slowareita levy olis jopa erinomainen

Disco, pop-RnB, vokal, dansemusik, hits

Top notch strings. I had never heard of the Chic-Sledge connection, but it makes sense now. Many vocals are strong, but outside those highlights it lacks energy.

Not bad. Not quite my style though. Was really neat to hear where the "Jiggy with it" sample came from though!

I cannot be bullied by the nice reviews into giving this anything higher than a 2!!

The songs are repetitive, but alright. I'm sure it would be good for disco, but not a fan of just listening to it.

He's the greatest dancer - 3 Lost in music - 3 Somebody loves me - 2 Thinking of you - 2 We are family - 4 Easier to love - 2 You're a friend to me - 2 One more time - 2

Listened to the first three songs. Wasn't enjoying it too much

Gute Intro-Songs für thematisch passende Fernsehsendungen. Nichts für meinen Plattenspieler.

2.1 1x not bad but not my jam

Not very great, nothing that stands out

I don't particularly care for disco but this has a little more funk to it. As much as I like the touch of funk it's still disco therefore boring. I mean disco music is meant for dancing so being repetitive is in it's nature. Also because of the repetitiveness the songs seem extra extra long. It really feels like there are two hit songs on this album and the rest is filler.

Title track is a classic. That's about all I've gotta say about that

I know the title track because it was the "theme song" for the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates. Speaking of baseball, I would imagine a copy or two of this nonsense was destroyed during Disco Demolition night at Comisky Park. Disco Sucks. It always has, it always will. I've got a t-shirt that says so. It's catchy, but not good. Neither is anything else. 2 stars, one for the nostalgia.

Not for me!

Love this, the singles, particularly “Thinking of You” are amazing. Top of the two stars. Tom.

Aside from ‘We are Family’ and ‘He’s the Greatest Dancer’, the album is mostly forgettable.

Wanted to like it more than I did - not my favorite

Not style of music I enjoy. Some very nice instrumentation and production and a couple of well known tracks.

Another perfectly produced Nile Rodgers record that sounds completely sterile and dead. There are a few good melodies, of course, but pretty much every song drags on WAY too long for the amount of ideas it contains, they just go on and on and on...

I dont get why I'm listening to this- oh they sing we are family. That made the album worth putting in the top 1000 right 2

We are family...the end. Well, okay, Good for you. Great song with a lot of disco repetition. I was around in those days. I didn't like it then (except for the family song, which is undeniably great...in the single version: short/sweet). 2 "for the family" stars.

I don’t mind disco but this was pretty sappy and definitely too slow for for dancing

Ok, but not really my thing. Theres something here that I just don’t personally like, but it’s hard to put a finger on.

It wasn’t bad, just really mid. No songs stuck out to me and to be honest it was like listening to the same song over and over 8 times. Overall, I would give this a 2.6/5!

172/1001 First listen. I can get into disco but it’s gonna need to be a compilation of the best. An album of this is a bit off the mark and just too much for me. 4/10

2.5/3 - I can't tell if I was just not in the mood for disco today, or if this album just wasn't my jam. While it has some fantastic tracks, We are Family, He's the Greatest Dancer being standouts, this one just wasn't pulling on my ear.

A little draggy outside of the singles which is fine - sometimes an artist’s best album is their greatest hits.

Garbage disco.

I'm not a disco fan but I found this acceptable for a while.

There are a few funky grooves that are fun but nothing about this recording raises it above the level of typical disco fare. The title track is certainly in contention for most prototypical disco song in pop culture. If you wanna indicate that something is 70’s disco, it’s a go-to song. The lyrics on the whole album are childish and totally meaningless or at least unimportant. I seldom if ever in a disco mood so it’s a pass for me.

Some fun bass lines and funky rhythm guitar. Unfortunately, this is a disco album and it sounds like one. If you’re into that, you might like this album.

It's a good one, but not for me

Really didn’t expect to start with the riff from getting jiggy with it. This was pretty good and over in a flash, which was disappointing.

It's not a terrible album by any means, but not particularly memorable either.

Not my jam

(38/100)

Some good vibes and some decent songs. Kinda bored after awhile.

not my thing

Once you ignore "We Are Family" the album is pretty not too bad.

Not my genre

Did you know "We Are Family" was nearly 9 minutes long? I sure didn't. The wonders of radio edits. This one didn't grab me too much, to be honest. I really enjoyed "He's the Greatest Dancer" and how one the song "ended" there was just another 4 minutes of solid jamming to follow. To be fair, I did start rapping "Gettin' Jiggy Wit' It" a bit during that part. The rest of it...eh? Much of it was slower or mid-tempo, and just didn't grab me. The last 5 minutes of "We Are Family" was a far less interesting jam than "Dancer" was. Fair, but not great.

If I was rating purely objectively this would probably get another star, as it's objectively "not bad" music, but I just find disco/Motown/funk etc deeply unenjoyable. Too upbeat, happy, exuberant...and who wants that from music?? Also this feels a bit pedestrian even as far as disco goes. "Somebody Loves Me" and "You're a Friend to Me" are absolute drivel, and the album just doesn't seem to have as many hooks as I'd expect from top-tier disco. 2 stars is a fair average of an objective (3-star) and subjective (1-star) rating I think

One good song (extended version ftw). Great instrumentation though.

File this one under: nails what it aims for, but just not for me at all

I've never been interested in Sister Sledge beyond their massive hit, "We Are Family." After listening this album, I'm not encouraged to extend myself. I like disco, probably better than the next person. I find the music fun. This album was just okay.

Title track bops but the rest falls flat. Product of the times but there's not enough here to warrant a spot on this list.

Had some nice grooves 2.5

A bit too cheesy for my taste

Coming in, I thought I would only know one song from that album. I was right! Overall some groovy songs, some lengths, but nothing to write home about.

Title track is good. Lost in music was ok. The rest of the album could have been the same song. It would be inoffensive in the background, but I wouldn’t put this on.

This was a boring exercise in persistence for me. There is one good song that is famous for a reason. The rest were too repetitive and dragged on too long. Disappointing because I generally enjoy this genre.

The opener was great and the title track is iconic but has lost its effect after being played into the ground over the years. Classic disco but I just get so bored. Thanks to one of the top reviewers for explaining that disco is about having fun. No shit and the gall to say that like it is enlightening. So patronizing Rating: 2.4

how interesting can 5 remixes of the same song be dude

Clean, clear vision from Bernard and Nile. Disco was once maligned, (guilty) but it has its place, and Nile is a master. That being said, it is a bit one note, and was pretty well trod territory by this time.

Couple of memorable songs

Disco! For a whole album?? I remember dancing to "We Are Family", but never played the whole album. The songs are very repetitive, little content. Hmm, that guitar, is it Nile Rodgers? Why yes it is! But then - reading Wikipedia makes me wonder, should this really be known as a Sister Sledge album, or what?? Wikipedia says "Edwards and Rodgers would only show the songs to Sister Sledge once the sisters were in front of the studio microphones." - eeeeuuuuwwww!!!!! I wonder how the sisters felt about that! Makes the album seem like product just for the sake of $$. I rate it Poor (3/10).

Edwards/Rodgers are badass, but this album is too disco for me.

I mean, We Are Family is a good track, but this just isn't my style.

A decent 70s sound, production, songwriting, and singing. A fine album with some big hits from the time. Not the biggest fan of the whole thing, though, with some okay tracks in it. 200th album generated.
