Reviews (page 10 of 13)
I hope the sledge family made a fortune off of “Big Willie Style”
3.2 Probably a top-end disco album. Some of the songs were repetitive. Some pretty funky basslines throughout, but they were hidden in the mix a bit.
6.5/10
I'm not fun & it's a bit too smooth for me. Curiously seems to be right on the line where if you left it more sparse, ditching the synth & making the piano part more minimal I would like it a lot, and if you went the other way & smoothed it over more I would hate it a lot. I don't know if the title track has been ruined by overuse in advertising, or if it always sounded like a song destined for ads, an unpleasant earworm. Worst song on the album, only one I disliked listening to.
I appreciated listening to this having learned the Nile Rodgers context of it after having Chic come up a couple months ago. It’s not as good, but it’s still good. Remarkable how many one star reviews are like “Ugh! Disco SUCKS!” People probably born in the 80s, like me, still totally affected by butt-rock radio campaigns from the mid-70s lol
It was different
Enjoyed this album
First two songs were pretty generic disco grooves. Too long but I could see the clubbing appeal. Can see a lot of disco influence on daft punk for example, songs just fade out instead of ending sometimes. It didn't make me listen to the lyrics really.
This was not what I expected from a band called Sister Sledge. I didn't dislike the music, but wanted something way heavier.
I know the title track off of this album, but I think that's the only Sister Sledge song I'm familiar with. However, earlier this year, I read Nile Rodgers's memoir, so I know a fair amount about the background and composition of this album. I loved Chic's C'est Chic, and I love Nile Rodgers' work as a producer and musician, so I have high hopes for this album. This album fell a little flat of my expectations. Overall, it has what I would expect from a disco album: funky bass lines, glamorous string arrangements, and airy vocals. Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards's fingerprints are all over this album, both in the songwriting, and in the musicianship. Nile's guitar playing is really great, and Bernard's signature bass lines are infectious and dance-inducing. The Sledge sisters sing well, and their vocals are a good match for this Chic-adjacent sound. The highs on this album are really high, with songs that are catchy and infectious, but the lows are dull and tedious, without adding a lot to add to the genre. "He's The Greatest Dancer" was a great leadoff track for the album, with a great bass line, dreamy vocals, and some great string arrangements to round out the sound. The lyrics ooze with late seventies disco aesthetic, and this was one of the most fun songs on the album. The title track was great too (the 1995 remaster on Spotify doesn't have the full version of this song, which was frustrating), and was really engaging for a longer disco song. "Thinking of You" featured my favorite piece of Nile's guitar playing on the album, the soft vocals were excellent, and I loved the drum solo towards the end. The rest of the album was a bit of a snooze though, with some sappy love songs that didn't land with me. These songs tended to rely more heavily on piano melodies, but they just weren't as fun and infectious as the songs that relied more on guitar playing. Still, this album was pretty good, but I had higher hopes for Nile and Bernard.
Enjoyable disco album
If I have learned anything through this project, I have learned that I really like the way Bernard Edwards play bass guitar. I, of course, knew "We are Family" and knew the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates adopted that song and cocaine on their way to winning the World Series. I have a feeling that combination also pushed this album all the way to the top of the charts. I knew three songs on this album, which is two more than I thought I would know. This is a first cousin to the two Chic albums on this list. I enjoyed those two albums and I enjoyed this one in the same way. Perhaps I should not lump all three in together but it is easy to do considering the writing/production thread. I am not sure I would even consider some of these songs to be disco, especially the slower songs. I did learn that "He's the World's Greatest Dancer" is the sample used in "Getting Jiggy wit It," which was new, fun knowledge. Would I listen to this album again, I am not sure I would, but I also would potentially recommend it to someone if the occasion arose.
I don't really like this type of music but it was still good, especially lost in music
Love the disco staple sister sledge!
Standard disco, nothing impressive but still enjoyable.
Track 1 basis of will Smith song :)
great album. plenty of hits. high 3* 72/100
I just knew that was Nile Rodgers the moment I heard the guitar. These ladies can sing and harmonize like crazy. While I think Chic came out with more bangers, this album follows the same enjoyable template that laid the ground for house music with its grip Iness and repetitive nature
That's definitely disco.
R&B disco and soul funk, so many samples from this album alone!
Fav: Easier To Love Least Fav: Lost In Music
Entertaining but not quite great 3.33
Couple of decent songs, an alright album as a whole but not my kind of music.
Some bangers but not enough between them.
Would probably give it 2.5. A couple well known songs that I like but I don’t love it
Oh the disco that discos, this is that
Very good
It’s a good bit of disco and more songs on here than I knew I’d know but it’s not for me. Disco just isn’t
Disco - long but good
"He's the Greatest Dancer," and "We are Family" are the bangers on this Chic produced disco album. 3.3 stars rounded down.
A disco album that doesn’t really sound as fun as I thought I would. Maybe it just hasn’t aged all that well.
On the one hand, seminal pieces of music. On the other hand, I never want to hear them unless I’m very drunk on a dancefloor.
Some great disco pop music. First track had me confused, never knew that's where that beat came from
Some good songs on here. The song We are family has hit a point where I can't see it as a song and more just a piece for movies or commercials. Will I listen to again: 10%
STANDOUTS: He's the Greatest Dancer We Are Family OVERALL: 2.75/5
frankly repetitive
Great
Some fun disco songs, but also some slower ones that don't do it for me
liked it
Fun, funky, soulful. Sister Sledge encapsulates what makes soul…soul. Great vocals and melodies over vibrant and upbeat rhythms. This music always brings a smile to my face and gets me moving before I even realize my body is just naturally grooving to these tunes.
solid but not my bag
Decent album, a bit like chic but a touch more commercial
The hits hit for sure. "Somebody Loves Me" is such a snooze fest, jeez.
This is absolutely a pleasant listen, with many hits on one album (including the really famous 'We Are Family'). This does feel very outdated and not more special than music from ABBA or Donna Summer, contemporaries who do the job better in my opinion. 3 stars.
Some fun, soulful tracks. Opener is comfortably my favorite.
Will Smith covered this I had no idea
I was excited for this album because “We Are Family” always makes me think of “The Birdcage”. The rest of the songs aren’t bad but they are not quite on the same level.
Disco music no está mal tiene el tema we are family hiper bailado
The hits are fine, but the deep cuts are bland.
Decent disco de disco TF: You are a friend to me o we are family
Almost a smooth jazz album, even with the disco beat. I don't recall hearing these songs, aside from the famous one, back in the day. It's pleasant, and very highly produced. A solid effort. I'm really tired of "We Are Family" as it's become a prime wedding song. Even though it's great it's lost its luster from overplaying. Still, solid 3 stars.
Good ol disco! I can enjoy disco because I think it's just good to have music that's fun instead of just trying to have such serious music all the time. I also appreciate disco because of how it might have created the punk scene. Not a bad record at all but I would probably only listen to it under certain circumstances.
It's interesting to me that disco never really fused into anything else. Maybe because it's already watered down funk, R&B and soul so it didn't really have anywhere to go? I'm not really sure, but this record was super fun. It's groovy, poppy, kind of silly, but overall just really fun. I totally get why this was the music of 70s and 80s gay clubs. Its awesome. If I could bring this album into one word, it would celebration. This record is just a celebration of life, music, party, family, friendship. Nothing overly deep in terms of music or themes, but it isn't striving for that. And I think the world needs music like this. One note about musical evolution: I do like how disco is kind of building progression music. It actually reminds me of EDM. So maybe that's it, maybe EDM was the evolution of disco.
A true standout piece of the 70s, We Are Family has stood the test of time, paving the way for the R&B genre as a whole.
We are Family is a 5 star song. Some cool grooves but didn’t love any of the songs.
This is fun to listen to but u don’t need to hear it agsub
Although not what I would choose to listen to it is extremely fun and catchy all the way through. High 3.
Lost in Music is one of my fave songs of the Disco/70s era. We Are Family and He's the Greatest Dancer are also noteworthy songs from then. Very listenable album.
This was a fun listen. It makes you want to dance and I found myself bobbing my head in time with the beat through most of it. That said it's probably not one I see myself returning to for the whole album often. There are a few stand out tracks, a few I passively enjoyed, and a couple I was very "eh" about. Some of the tracks seemed to go on a little long to me, but maybe that is the norm for disco (which make sense for dancing out on the floor)? I don't have an overly developed ear for disco as it wasn't one I listened to growing up, or one I have explored a lot independently. That makes me wonder what I might think of the album after I have some more under my belt from this list. For now though, it falls solidly to a 3 star.
Nunca me ha emocionado la canción We are family. Pero bueno, cantan muy bien.
Monica Bullman’s favourite album- nearly a 4 but realistically only one track comes to mind
Not much to say. Important highly influential post-Motown pop soul with great production. I’d never play it at home
Heel nice wel. Eerste nummer echt god den natuurlijk we are family. Verder zakt ie echt wel erg in helaas
Pretty good. No fat on the album, so many strong basslines, good vocals. I can dig it. 3.5.
Bouncy fun with a bunch of hits
I love hearing originals from more famous songs that have sampled from it. Opening track hits you with 90s nostalgia for Gettin Jiggy with it by Will Smith. We're lost in music is another familiar tune and a strong follow up to the opener. The disco groove made me bop while holding my sleeping baby. Thereafter aside from the title track which is good but so cheesy, the sounds seem to blend. Not a fan of the overbearing romantic lyrics
3.4 great, but nothing special faves: hes the greatest dancer, lost in music
I mean "We Are Family" is a culturally important song -- people play it at so many events. And it was interesting to recognize other tracks that were sampled, e.g. Will Smith used the music from He's the Greatest Dancer in Gettin' Jiggy With It. That said, it's not the kind of album I would go back to often.
Like some of the other disco era albums we've listened to, this loses a bit one the slower ballads, but I love it when it's upbeat amd danceable.
We Are Family was a mainstay in my house growing up, despite the fact that my parents hated disco. I’ve long known Sledge, though I hadn’t listened to the rest of the album. Key tracks were aside from the Title track, are He’s a Great Dancer and Thinking of You, boosted because of the stellar bass work of aficionado Bernard Edwards (Boomers know him from Chic; Xers know him from Rappers Delight, and Meillenials don’t think music existed before them so they don’t know shit).
Getting jiggy with it! I recognized that sample right from the moment I turned this one on. This is a pretty good disco album. I could see throwing this into the mix when I'm in an ABBA kind of mood. We are Family is an all time classic and should be played at every wedding reception.
Nile Rodgers always brings the fun 🕺🏽
Over powered by the over played We Are Family single. 70s RnB/Disco
I like the funky beats here, but won't go out of my way to listen to this again. 3/5
Pretty "meh" disco album. We Are Family is a standout but not a particularly interesting album.
The Greatest Dancer Lost In Music We Are Family Very funky and good to dance too. Beautiful voice and great instruments. I would like it more if there were more verses to the songs.
fun!!
Disco.
3/5. 'Twas fine
I have no idea why, but this album makes me think of watching cable tv as a kid in the ‘80s.
I wanted to like this more than I did. I find that lots of dance music, be it disco or electronica would benefit from editing. Some of these songs are real catchy and fun and then they just keep going and going and going and going and going and going and it’s like okay. Now I don’t like it anymore. Maybe if it went even longer then it would go back to the point that I like it again. But probably not.
I'm not big on disco, but there are certain tracks that knock it out of the park. And, to only call this album disco would be a disservice (discovice?) because there's several great funk beats in here. I really liked tracks 1, 4, and 6. The titular track 5 is perhaps a song that will stand the test of time because of how much it is still referenced and used in pop culture. The rest of the album was okay, but not terribly memorable to me. I would give this a two since I'm not likely to return to the album, but 50% of the album being noteworthy kind of warrants a boost of some kind, so I'm rating this at a solid 3.
Average
Mark Ronson owes royalties to Sister Sledge. Daft Punk too probably. Honestly a lot of musicians. First song was great. Rest of the album didn't capture me as well but it wasn't bad. Pretty fun stuff though.
A cold, rainy afternoon and Sister Sledge warmed it up. Great listening and it brings back memories of younger days roaming clubs with my friends.
Classic disco music. Did not listen to the four remixes at the end of the album, I had gotten the picture. But, the experience was good. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It’s a bit repetitive, go figure. Standouts: He’s the Greatest Dancer, Thinking of You, You’re a Friend to Me, and One More Time.
I've never been big on the song "We Are Family," so I entered into this listen with some trepidation. "We Are Family" holds up much better in the context of the album, in my opinion. I'd only ever heard it pumped through speakers at some school event or other mandatory celebration. I'm relieved that the original seems to be a huge hit for a good reason. Overall, I enjoyed this album just fine and am glad to have a disco classic under my belt, but I can't say that I'll revisit. Highlights: Lost in Music, We Are Family, One More Time
I remember “We Are Family” well, I was a Pittsburgh Pirates fan when they adopted the song during their 1979 World Series winning run. It’s a fun song, a real stand-out, and was very popular at the time. I also recognize “Greatest Dancer”. It’s all somewhat generic disco, but very well put together, it all sounds great. This is a Niles Rodgers / Bernard Edwards project, they wrote all the songs, and produced the album, and played. These co-founders of Chic have left their marks across countless songs / artists. That said, there’s not a lot of variation in the vibe. A couple slow dace songs, but it’s all danceable. After all, this is primarily dance music. Don’t expect a lot of deep social commentary. Don’t look for mind blowing musical virtuosity. Nothing groundbreaking. But that’s just fine. This album delivers exactly what it promises, and that’s ok. 3/5
Pretty enjoyable.
Is exactly what it is. Every now and then you can hear the disco funk that Dave Grohl was so inspired by. I like the other stuff better than the famous family one.
awwww freak out.
It's a fun album
Was a good get ready on a Friday night with the gals type of album
If you liked dancing and cocaine in 1979 something tells me this was a big one
Iconic, but only pretty good. I find the songs overly repetitive. This is a true edge case; I wish I could rate it 3.5 stars, but I think I’ll give it 3. Maybe 4, we’ll see how I feel tomorrow.
I was in HS when this came out. I wasn’t all that impressed with Disco generally our this group in particular and wrote it off as one hit wonders. But now 40 years on, and especially after listening to so much other bad music on this list, you realize how good this is. True harmony in the vocals, and good range, snappy update music….yeah this is definitely far better than probably 3/4s of this 1001 albums. The 70s - even our bad music was better than today’s.
Nunca me ha emocionado la canción We are family. Pero bueno, cantan muy bien.
Groovy and great, but I'd have to be in a really specific mood to listen to anything but the title track.
Tasteful disco with rock solid performances and engaging songs.
That unmistakable Nile Rodger’s sound is what makes this album great. Solid 3. Disco!!!
We Are Family still slaps but the rest of the album was meh for me.
This was in surround sound, which was done pretty well. Enjoy the duo of Edward’s and Rogers, but outside of the hits this was just OK. Loved “We are Family” in its 8+ minute version. In 1979 I started my first actuarial job in June, and then in the fall, this was the team song for the Pittsburgh Pirates when they played the Baltimore Orioles in the World Series. Somehow I won our office pool on the series, picking the underdog Pirates.
Can't relate!
The three hits are super dope, Thinking of You, too - the rest I've already forgotten.
Blind album, know the hit. Hit was a hit for a reason and the album less so
Classic 70s disco sound. The songwriting is fairly basic, but the lyrics and vocals performance stand out as being catchy and approachable. Very much a product of the time and I don't know that I see this as an all-time classic sort of album. Still a fun listen though.
good record! a 3.5 fosure. I was already familiar with the song we are family and the rest of the album was surprisingly also almost as good! Sum good funky momens on this record.
We Are Family is the breakthrough album from Sister Sledge. Written and produced by the very Chic Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers, the album features strong songs, great musicianship, wonderful harmonies, and clean production. Edwards and Rodgers also provide fine guitar and bass, respectively, throughout. Back in the day, I was petty much anti-disco, but now with a few more years on me, I'm overall, more open to it and enjoy several of the songs.
Another one that was better than I thought it would be. Like many disco albums by the 3rd or 4th song it all kind of runs together but the first half of the album was solid.
It's disco. That's about as much of a reaction that any disco album will get out of me. Still some decent/fun songs. Top tracks: He's the Greatest Dancer, We Are Family
Energizing
funky
This is much better than I expected. Basically every song was too long though. Still a strong 3.
There are some absolute bangers in this album (“We Are Family” and “He’s The Greatest Dancer” to name a couple)! Although it didn’t wow me I’ll probably keep it on rotation and dig more into their discography. Disco doesn’t get much love these days but the genre has some forgotten gems worth exploring.
Pittsburgh Pirates 1970’s theme.
Good album. Nothing mind-blowing for me.
Was not made for me but I still had a fun time. Disco ain't normally my thing but this was enjoyable, albeit repetitive towards the end. Fav songs - He's the greatest dancer - We are family
Cat: great grooves, pretty classic! Some is meh and something seems off. But all in all they’re pioneers
Not sure how to rate a disco album
It's not for me, and several of the songs stretch way too long, most notably the title track (which is quite possibly the worst on the album). But I can see the appeal.
Upbeat album. Can tell the disco influence
Yeah it was fine. Just not exactly my cup of tea.
2 hita i njihovi mixovi su nice, ostalo meh
Fino funky, al opet nis memorable osim 2 pjesme.
They sing "oh what wow" 23 times, which does make the case that "he is the greatest dancer more convincing", and I would now like to see him dance myself. I didn't quite feel the passion come through in "lost in music" - the words say that they've never felt so alive and are ready to quit the 9 to 5, but the voice says it's just a song. I had some fun listening to this, even danced a little to a few tracks in the middle of work, but I'll probably never listen to it again.
Eh, it was okay. Very much of the era, and at this point I've heard these songs so much they're basically Muzak. Still, contains a few good bops.
We Are Family is probably the worst song on this album. Solid album otherwise.
Not bad but just kinda fizzled for me after the first half. Would revisit later though.
3.49 stars, so it rounds down. I liked it! It did kind of taper off at the end in my opinion but the beginning was dope.
Solid Friday vibes, even for a girl who usually isn’t a huge fan of disco.
love the groovy basslines, to me they were probably the most interesting thing. i found myself concentrating on them and the smooth vocals the most while listening. i got a bit bored with the remixes but all in all a nice soft album! fave songs: lost in music, thinking of you & one more time
Some bangers on there.
I don’t think I like disco
The Boyz on top of their game! 7/10 Highlights: Lost in Music Thinking of You
Wow I can't believe they made a song about me all the way back in 1979 Best Song: He's the greatest dancer Worst Song: N/A A true 3.5 star album
Don’t think I would enjoy this album but it was a fun listen. We Are Family is so overplayed but the rest of the album was good.
I unexpectedly grew muttonchops and a mustache while listening to this.
I'm no disco superfan, but this is one of the good ones, because it's got THE FUNK in it. Also: samples and beats that would end up in a million hip hop songs.
Best songs: He’s the Greatest Dancer Lost In Music We Are Family 3/5 overall
Jan 27 2024
Not my type of music, but still a very solid album. Some tracks were a little dull, but I enjoyed the album. Great bass parts and tone. Probably closer to a 3.5
Album sounds good, but only the singles really truly stand out
“We Are Family” is possibly the most overplayed song of all time—and does not need to be over 8 minutes long. So, I was not super excited going into this album. It’s alright. It’s not the worst, but it’s not really my style. I instantly knew the opening track but hadn’t realized they sang it (and of course it’s famous for being sampled in “Gettin Jiggy Wit It”). It’s a pretty typical disco song. The rest of the album is more of the same: disco and slow-tempo 70s ballads. The reggae vibe on “You’re a Friend to Me” was kind of interesting, and the guitar solo on the closing track was fun. Beyond that it was mostly fine but not really memorable. A lot of the lyrics aren’t bad and the singers have beautiful voices. I’m just not a big fan of disco or schlocky 70s soft rock. I’m not rabidly anti-disco—I wouldn’t turn it off if it happened to come on, and I’d dance to it in a club, but I’m not specifically seeking out disco nights or anything. 3/5
Disco sucks but We are Family can still get it
The titular song takes me back to Elementary/Middle School and Cove Camp. This song was family friendly and so of course was on steady rotation. There was this one kid who could belt the Sister Sledge voices super well. All of the camp counselors and other campers were super impressed and kept making him sing it. I thought I did it pretty good but he was obviously better, and I was quite jealous. Nevertheless, I enjoyed my listen through of the album. I went back to “Thinking of You” and listened to it again later in the day - I’ll probably sample it for the mixtape.
This a landmark album even if it's only for We Are Family. I'm pretty sure we all heard it at a young age from our parents or in movies/tv shows/commercials and it’s stuck around almost 50 years since. On top of that, there are so many different samples taken from the other tracks that eventually turned into hits of their own (looking at you gettin' jiggy with it Will Smith). A great disco album with great rhythm and catchy lyrics, no wonder people wanted to get up and dance. The genre and musical styles might be a little outdated but really there isn't much to dislike about this album. Best tracks are We Are Family (obviously), He's the Greatest Dancer, Lost in the Music, and Thinking of You. Also, the original album without all of the remixes is super short.
Some good tracks, including the original for gettin jiggy wit it. Better than expected, but "we are family" is still schlocky.
Thought I’d like this better
funky
Such a groovy album and I got surprised by the good old we are family track.
Börja bra men förblev lite för repetitiv. Definitivt ett underhållande album. Bästa låter är Lost In Music. 3,5/5
Impressive; great rhythms
Great album, never really would have given it a chance if I had only looked at the hit song. “We Are Family” was actually my least favorite, but may just have to do with overhearing it. 3/5
Probably would have liked it better had the song we are family not been constantly played during the 1979 World Series by the Pirates
Nice disco pop some good songs aside from the big hit.
It was an easy listen but not really my jam.
Sweet, soft...
Bluesy disco, repetitive
Pretty good but did not enjoy how repetitive it was 7.5/10
An album I guess I was aware of but it had never occurred to me to listen to the album. I have wanted to diversify my music taste for a while and this seems like a good way to break out of the typical sad/indie pop I’ve been listening to recently. Much more chill than I anticipated but not a bad thing. I enjoyed this album
Classic, solid disco pop. Didn’t hate it, don’t have much enthusiasm for it. Pleasant to listen to.
Classic soul
70s pre-disco r&b…that’s about all there is to know
The first 2 tracks are absolute bangers! Got me moving right off the start. The rest doesn't quite get there for me though, so the album ended up feeling a bit long. "We Are Family" extended version is cool though. Had only heard the short version. 3/5
Good start , first song must have been sampled by will smith back in the day ( getting jigggy with it) But I didn’t get into the rest of it 3 of the songs I really liked though 2.5
Good album. Almost want to give it a 4.
We are family!
de svänger de får man ändå ge dom! stabilt
mysigt album
Two Mega hits
Not my style but still fun
Danceable with slick beats. Sweet but not dynamic vocals.
A solid run of late-era disco. I don't think I need to hear the title track ever again though.
Par de clásicos
Really a Rogers/Edwards album with the Sisters Sledge as singers. Rogers influence was all over album, which was a highlight.
disco!!
Different to what I normally listen to. Overall decent and enjoyable. Favourite song He's the Greatest dancer.
Fun album. I love that the first song was what Will Smith sampled for “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It” and “We Are Family” is classic.
It’s not the album but the genre that I’m just not that into. “We are family” will live on forever and is a great anthem of family unity! Saw Sister Sledge at a fair and they opened and closed the show with it, rightly so!
Loving the guitar the voices are really good but I'm not super interested in the subject matter if that makes sense nothing special overall, wouldn't be _mad_ to hear it more, just certainly not my preferred music.
Perfect start to a Friday. Get going with the boogie. I wanna hear Tragedy cover “Lost in Music” Can’t hear the title track without thinking of every wedding, reunion, and milestone birthday party gathering I attended growing up. Bunch of Italian/Irish moms and aunts tearing up the dance floor.
Groovy! 3.75/5
I came into this only knowing We Are Family which is perhaps its curse. There were some really great disco grooves but it always left me wanting more. At its best it still felt like wedding music. It’s like the yacht rock of disco, yacht disco? It’s really a 3.5/5 and I can’t round up because I’ve assigned 4 stars to meaning I’m going out of my way to listen again later and this doesn’t quite break through.
The three big hits are fantastic, but the rest of the album is a bit repetitive and feels like filler wrapped around the good bits. 5 stars for the three hits, but reduced to 3 stars due to the duller sections.
Loved them!
Fun and funky
"Lost in Music" und "We are Familiy" sind natürlich Klassiker. Kann man sich gut anhören. Rest sind Schnulzen ;-)
I like that it was dance music and upbeat with great messages to get my spirit up for the day. You truly can’t go wrong with disco. However all the songs kind of blurred together cause they sound so similar. I would rather listen to bee gees if I’m gonna dance to disco!
Easy listening Disco music. Not much more to say. Everyone knows the one song.
Quite good for a disco album. “He’s The Greatest Dancer” is probably one of the best disco songs ever, in my opinion. Nile Rodgers production is top tier here. I don’t always love listening to disco, but this was enjoyable. Their voices are beautiful, and the songs are fun. And I totally understand why this album is on this list.
Really solid entry in the annals of disco's golden era. I might rank Donna Summer's "Bad Girls" above this one, but it's definitely in the mix.
Thoughts before listening: 70s soul/r&b. The title track is awesome, but I don't know anything else about this record. I'm expecting a mixture of funk and disco songs with a couple ballad torch songs thrown in a well. Review: Okay, this is a cool disco record that reminds me of the Chic album I got earlier. Disco isn't something I seek out and listen to regularly, but I have been pleasantly surprised when those albums come up on this list. The musicianship on these tracks is just so much more organic sounding than dance music from the 80s and beyond. This album is no exception with great basslines and cool little guitar licks throughout. Right out the gate I know the groove in the first song He's the Greatest Dancer without recognizing the actual song...this must have been sampled on something from the 90s (I cheated and its on Gettin Jiggy With It). Lost in Music is another very good song, and of course the title track is iconic. There are some songs on this album where I am little bored, but overall I enjoyed listening to this. 3 stars.
Some classic disco songs, but they are a little repetitive for me. Album was funkier than I expected too and you could hear the talent behind the production.
good vibes
yeAWHH love the sound of the guitar
As a Pittsburgh Pirates fan, I think I'm contractually obligated to like "We are Family". The good news is that it's by far the best song on this album, Willie Stargell was onto something. Honestly I think this is kind of a mediocre album with a few decent songs and one great one. The R&B/disco thing is kind of fun, but it gets old pretty fast. I generally like slower songs on most albums, but the ones on here were a bit of a miss for me. When you take away the up-tempo disco vibes it falls pretty flat. "We are Family" is fire though, just straight good vibes. Favorite song: We are Family Other: He's the Greatest Dancer, Lost in Music, Thinking of You 12/12/23
My biggest gripe with it is that it feels too repetitive. It gets bumped up to a 3 thanks to “Thinking Of You” and “We Are Family”
Nice listen, upbeat. Already familiar with the title song. I enjoyed listening to the bass in particular.
Good funky album, some big songs on the album and enjoyed it.
12/8/23. Classic soul album. Will never get enough of Nile Rodgers' guitar playing and feel good songs from this.
Silky, highly produced disco-era music. This isn’t a genre known for a lot of front to back great albums, but this one has some solid grooves courtesy of the ever-excellent Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards. On the whole though, it was basically 2 outstanding songs and a fair amount that was unmemorable, but I enjoyed it. Fave Songs: We Are Family, He's the Greatest Dancer, Lost in Music, Thinking of You, Somebody Loves Me
Really fun album!
I only like the dance songs!
"my creme de la creme, please take me home" If I never have to hear the track "We are family" in my life again, I would be glad. Not sure why they needed to put all 3 different versions on the album. I wasn't expecting much from this album but it sent me to a very funky place, and I didn't dislike it. "He's the greatest dancer" might be one of the most danceable tracks that has ever graced my ears, and I think that's the main draw of this album - something to get down n groovy with. (playlist track). "Lost in music" has a really nice chorus with a funky guitar backing, I could really hear someone like daft punk sampling this track. Beyond these starter tracks, I was let down by this album. 3/5
this was FUN the first 2 songs make up for the fact i never want to hear we are family the song ever again.
Disco isn’t an album-based genre, but this one works more often than not. Great one two punch to start and the title track is the centerpiece - a classic song despite being a wedding reception cliche at this point. The few slow tracks have me knock this down to three stars. Go listen to The Fall’s cover of Lost In Music if you haven’t heard it.
C'était pas trop mal j'ai bien aimé la dernière chanson (one More Time)
I don’t remember why
Finally
I think Disco is for healthy, happy people who like to dance, which is why I can't relate... But gave it a couple listens, and there's some good songwriting in there to appreciate, a good vocal groove, some great guitar at times. Not one for me, though.
Could be better, not my cup of tea
80’s vibes pretty good
A fun album I enjoyed. Won't revisit as songs felt repetitive but it was overall enjoyable. 6.5/10
Solid disco album, a number of forgettable tracks buoyed by two of the greatest disco songs ever made.
He’s the Greatest Dancer - 7/10 Lost in Music - 7/10 Somebody Loves Me - 7/10 Thinking of You - 7/10 We are Family - 7/10 Easier to Love - 7/10 You’re a Friend to Me - 7/10 One More Time - 7/10 TOTAL - 63/80
nice song
An absolute classic!!!
Onpa freesi soundi näiden edellisten jälkeen!! Erilainen (niihi verrattuna) mut ei sillee jääny mitää liikaa mieleen.
I really should listen to more r&b soul. Really is an incredible period in music. So outside what I normally listen to and it was awesome.
Quite liked some of the songs
In the disco/R&B/pop world this album would rank pretty high, especially the title track and deservedly so but is it something I would reach for when I felt like listening to something? Probably not. I wouldn't knock it but it's not my kind of thing.
As much as I love hearing Nile's guitar and Bernard's oh so funky bass, the rest of it leaves me cold. The vocals are sterile. I can hear they have good pipes but they sound reticent.
disco time, but nice
Classics on here! Good stuff. Wouldn’t listen to it day to day though
You'd be hard pressed to find another artist that puts so much CHARACTER in their songs. Tom Waits, while his vocal delivery can be off-putting for some, puts more feeling into his each note than most others can muster in entire albums. His wheelhouse seems to be both New Orleans-style dreary blues and schmaltzy ballads, both of which can be found in spades on Heart Attack and Vine. But he brings such a uniqueness to them that I find them endlessly interesting. I expect to revisit this album again soon to uncover more layers of the onion.
If I needed dance music, I would probably pick this, another surprisingly good album.
It had me tapping my feet from the first beat, and I was pretty pumped for an hour of We Are Family-esque vibes to kick off the weekend, but it started to drag pretty quickly and the album overall didn’t give me that deep down tickle I was looking for. Three stars feels harsh and I wish I could add a half star in there at least, but maybe I’m just a grade inflator. We Are Family is such a great song though - impossible not to feel good when you hear it.
I really did not need 20ish minutes of We Are Family but otherwise it’s fine.
There are so many iconic singles, which makes it a classic album. I couldn't get into it, though.
"He's the Greatest Dancer" and "We Are Family" are legendary disco tracks. The rest was okay. 5 stars for the former, 3 for the latter.
Solid album, started stronger than it finished
"We are indeed" - Hammer
Fresh and funky, but not really my sound
It's good
"He's the greatest dancer" and "We are family" are, of course, incredibly fun, while "Lost in music" has a hypnotizing quality that reminds me of my all-time favourite "I feel love" and of daft punk (but maybe that's just Nile Rodgerd on Get Lucky?). The others are a bit more forgettable, but still overall really really well executed.
Great
I love music groups made of siblings or family members, and there are a lot of them! Gives me hope for the future. This album was a lot of fun- I also love funk and this was pretty funky. It’s been fun seeing different pioneers in their genres so far here. Three stars
I like 70's disco. He's the greatest dancer was my favorite. I'm not sure I can give it 4 stars because I found some of the slower songs less exciting and I am not sure this is an album that I will go back to in the future.
I guess it's okay, Nile Rodger's guitar playing is really evident throughout
Packed with bangers! He’s the greatest dancer is up there with my fave disco tracks - loved it
A solid disco album, with some great funky bass lines and instrumentals. Having four vocalists adds a lot of dynamics to the music. But it is just slightly boring, and each song sounds kind of similar to the next, so everything just blended together in my head, and nothing stuck out to me. We Are Family is a classic song though. Rating: 5/10
"We Are Family" by Sister Sledge is an album that's best known for its titular track, a disco anthem that has become a timeless classic. Released in 1979, the album is a reflection of the disco era and the vocal talents of the Sledge sisters. The title track "We Are Family" remains the standout, featuring infectious grooves and memorable hooks. However, beyond this iconic hit, the album can come across as somewhat unremarkable. While tracks like "He's the Greatest Dancer" and "Lost in Music" maintain the disco vibe, they don't reach the same level of recognition or enduring popularity. The album's production is emblematic of the disco era, with lush orchestration and danceable rhythms. In summary, "We Are Family" is a solid disco album with a standout title track. However, it doesn't quite maintain the same level of excellence throughout, which can leave it feeling a bit one-dimensional. A 3/5 rating is fair, reflecting the album's mixed level of impact beyond its title track.
Not as fun or uplifting as I wanted them to be but the hits are great floor-fillers.
Some r&b/disco staples. I can hear the songs that have been sampled by other artists
Nile Rogers production with a couple of solid singles to go with the titular 80's anthem. A bit of a one hit wonder as far as the album as a whole goes but it deservedly finds a spot on the list as a positive representation of the era.
Not really into disco much... not too bad though.
Good!
Im often not that big of a fan of this classic disco style because it all sounds very similar, but its well done here and still an enjoyable listen.
Nice but not really my cup of tea
It's cute as fuck
I felt like part of the family.
Not bad but gets a little tedious on a whole album
Enjoyable overall
Wow - there's a LOT of disco sucks hate here. Come on, what's not to love, Nile absolutely drives this funky train along. (Completely unnecessary remixes included - HARD agree)
- Discoooooo - great beats that are very groovy - Nothing I would go back to on a regular basis, but it was fun
- groovy dance music - title track is a classic
Trying to be objective because I'm not a huge disco fan. Sounds like the Seventies. Lush composition and lots of technical skill. Some catchy tunes, and the title track is infectious.
Probably as good as disco gets for me. 6/10
The problem with putting disco onto an album is that it can sound repetetive, which is perfect for the dance floor! But can be a bit boring as an album. Solid tracks and some iconic track though!
Previously only ever heard the song We Are Family, and never really liked it. I was pleasantly surprised when the first song began and I actually really liked it. This album softened my opinion on disco. Still don't like the song We Are Family Though. 3/5
It’s a bop
Voz femenina profunda. Algo de ritmo discotequero de la época.
The production is obviously very good. Opening track will always remind me of "Gettin' Jiggy wit It", thanks a lot Will. Somebody Loves Me is probably more my vibe these days, slow and R&B... Thinking of You also really good. We Are Family has been so overplayed, but for good reason. It's anthemic, really catchy, and means a lot to a ton of people... ok this bridge really jams and I doubt I've ever heard it! You're a Friend to Me... so smooth, this is great! I love the guitar playing on this. Not on my list of must-haves, but it is remarkably well done and a classic. Maybe a little tooo polished... it's groovy and nice but not especially moving or impactful, but 3/5 for being so damn slick.
During the disco craze of the late 70s, there was SO MUCH disco music being created. It was overwhelming. Even stars that were notable for other styles of music were pumping out some disco tracks, such as the Grateful Dead. This means there was a lot of good disco and a lot of BAD disco, and most of it was bad. This, however, is an exception. It leans more on the funky side of disco with great instrumentation. "We Are Family" is such a killer track too.
Good vibes, disco magic ✨
Don't mind a bit of disco, thankfully this didn't drag on too long so I finished the album and it didn't feel like a slog. Really liked "you're a friend to me" - much slower than the rest of the album and was a real nice way to change it up
Upgraded from 2 to 3 stars on the strength of the iconic status of the title track. The rest of the record was a fun disco record but nothing remarkable.
6/10. Hard to judge, some days disco is what I want to listen to, other days it just reminds me that I'd rather be listening to funk.
I’m feeling like a sister right about now
Fun!
Interesting album, half of the songs are all time classics, half the album is repetitive, boring, filler. 3.5/5 Fav track: Lost in Music
Surprised with how many classics appear on this album. Sometimes I'm not sure if disco always wins me over entirely, but there was heaps to enjoy here. The dancier songs stood out far more than the slower tracks, but that's ok. Fave track: Lost in Music
Title track is outstanding. Because it’s so good, I’ll give the album 3 stars, even thought there’s nothing else here that I really find engaging. Reasonable background music. Sometimes boring & repetitive. I love Nile Rodgers. I love his guitar playing. But most of this album doesn’t do it for me.
Disco sould. Catchy, pretty much to a fault. Title track is the standout.
A couple of classic disco trackers, but most are over long
A very flat 3
Very well put together, classic classic classic. Feel good listen. Not my cup of tea for a daily listen. Rating comes from how much I enjoyed it, still a very good record.
Some classic songs on here, not really my thing and some filler, but good fun and danceable
Easy listening, not an album I see myself coming back to with any regularity but a pleasant album to have on as you go about other things.
A fun album with disco grooves that make you want to dance, much maligned in genre, I like the engaging energy it brings.
It's all very pleasant and has some right tunes on it but the fact that the remixes are much better suggest that the sound isn't quite right.
Disco orígenes
Typical Disco bidness.
Disco would be dead by the end of 1979 and you can kind of hear why in "We Are Family". While chock full of great danceable hits, you could say the same about the past decade. This album doesn't do anything to rise above its contemporaries and aside from it's title track has not left a huge impression on the music landscape. This album would feel right at home in 1977 or 1973 and is sort of a testament to how stale everything had gotten by the end of the decade. Taken at face value this album is great. Short, sweet, danceable. But then again, so was everything else.
Doesn’t hold up. But still some good songs.
I rated the Chic album from the same year 3 stars. This one is slightly better. More varied, some songs are better, some songs are not that long. But it's not worth 4 stars. Favorite song: lost in music
5 stars for the bass playing and guitar noodling. 1star for the rest.
