Reviews (page 6 of 8)

It feels like listening to the birth of punk yet it isn't. It feels like listening to a band that inspired the Ramones yet It came out after the Ramones debut. It feels like I would remember those songs as some are very good yet I couldn't sing one 5 minutes after it ended. 3 stars

This is a bop, I love late 70s British rock, turns out. Compared to other stuff I like though, this is reasonably boring. It makes decent background and dancing around music, but it definitely didn't blow my mind or anything.

This is a pretty solid punk offering. Nothing special, just fast-paced and fun.

Teenage kicks & Here comes the summer Songs too short though!

TBH kinda forgettable? Maybe I just wasn't paying attention

Marshmallow punk? They sound so nice. “True confessions” keyboard version stands out for originality (though I would have cut the vocals) 7/10

Decent but I've heard better punk rock.

Really good riffs and big variety of songs. A bit one dimensional but still diverse for a British rock n' roll classic. (79%).

British Ramones. Ramones are better, but this was still good.

I found myself relistening to this a couple of times, but not because I liked it, but rather I think it reminded me enough with other music I did like that I thought maybe I was missing something and if I tried hard enough I would like it, but no I don't. Also I highly recommend not watching the videos, I think I might have ruined Teenage Kicks by doing so.

I didn’t love all of it, and I didn’t hate all of it. Half the album was a 4, half the album was a 1 or 2. And it wasn’t have the songs, it was like half of each song.

Decent punk. Teenage Kicks is a classic, another couple of standout tracks, a little bit of organ and the odd funky bass solo. It does get very samey though and the singer’s vibrato gets annoying.

Decent album, but not as good as Hypnotised.

Album with ups and downs

Very samey, but in a good way I guess. There's a few stand out songs, but everything else is just more of the same with slightly different lyrics and a slightly different tune. Short and sweet, but nothing amazing.

Early punk rock. Nice job.

Pretty sick. I'm not big on '70s punk but this was a good listen. Nothing really stood out to me, but I didn't hate it.

A lovely serve of jaunty, happy, semi-punk. Very tight and well arranged.

Simple irish punky pop much beloved by John Peel. Short snappy working class songs about young love and council estates. Largely forgettable but to the point.

A perfectly fine punk rock record, in the vein of the Buzzcocks or Ramones. Favorite tracks: "Male Model", "Teenage Kicks", "Here Comes The Summer"

They're fine. They sound like the Sex Pistols but easier to listen to. I have concluded that an English Writer & Editor has written the 1001 Albums book because of the sheer number of Brit Rock bands or European bands I have listened to in the last week. There is usually no clear context for these bands and how they changed the music scene in their period. Sometimes the Wiki isn't good enough. For instance, the Undertones are from Ireland -- Derry of all places, and I am pretty sure they were still going through The Troubles during the late 70s to early 80s. This is an important context to understanding another culture's musical history. Then to put them side to side with other contemporary music artists of the period from Ireland, UK, Australia, America, and wherever else -- would be also create better context. :)

bastante buen punk. corto y diver

Good music but the sound is way too clean for a punk album

Just my personal opinion, not a slight of the band or it's multitude of loyal fans. Punk is a difficult beast, at it's best it's emotionally cathartic. Sometimes, it feels a little bit disposable. This will not stay with me, but 3 stars out of respect.

Good Punk!

few bangers, few annoying songs

If you like song one, you’ll like them all. There’s great consistency in this one. Maybe a little too much. Some variation in sound would have been nice.

Early punk. Nothing stupendous but still fun throughout.

This was done totally acceptable, but unremarkable punk

Nothing too good or too bad.

Fun album. Had several songs I didn't know I knew.

The Undertones seem like such a familiar name but I guess it’s just the generic ‘The …’ sort of band name. The album cover also gave me somewhat nostalgic British rock vibes so I could kinda guess what direction this album was going in and I have to say it was what I was expecting but also what I wasn’t. At 26 songs this album does feel like a bit of a handful at times as you’re dealing with a lot of different sounds but I’ll point out the ones that stood out to me first. ‘Family Entertainment’ is a great way to open the album with a rock and roll banger and an infectious chorus, the front man and backing vocalists trading vocals is so catchy. The chorus on ‘I Gotta Getta’ is so incredibly catchy too with a deep guitar riff in the back that gives the song such a cool tone. The following track ‘Teenage Kicks’ has such a classic rock sound it’s hard not to nod your head along to it. The vocalists cadence is so clear on this track which really gives this album some uniqueness as he really does stand out. There are also some cooler cuts on the backend such as ‘You’ve Got My Number’ where the guitars really stand out here, and the final track ‘Let’s Talk About Girls’ which has some raw rock and roll energy to it. This ends up being the pattern in this album that usually the better songs have a longer run time. To add, what really does let this album, which was my worry from the start, is the run time. These are a nice group of catchy rock and roll songs but some of them are just not needed like two versions of ‘True Confessions’ when it is far from one of the best songs on the album and ‘Smarter Than You’ which starts off strong but the vocalist lets me down here, this as an instrumental only track would’ve been great. Personally if this album was condensed down to like 14 songs and some of them were a bit longer then I think I would’ve enjoyed it a lot more. Overall, a cool album with some nice bangers but not one of my favourites, will come back to a handful of songs.

This is some 60s style pop informed by 70s punk aesthetic. And while I'm not a fan of either genre, this is an alright enough album. 3/5

Expected to hate it and quite enjoyed it. Decent.

One of the great British punk bands to come out of Londonderry 🇬🇧 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

Sounded a lot like the Ramones , quick punk album

3,5 if I could give it

I feel like when I hear Bri'ish punk I can just skip it and give it a 3 for sounding good, but homogenous. There's actually some good variety here relative to other punk. I would probably give this a 3.5 stars, but rounded down because it's definitely not 4 worthy.

Enjoyable throughout! Great fun energy. Singer has a cool voice that wouldn't work well in just any genre but it really works here perfectly

Teenage Kicks is definitely one of the best songs of all time. I get why it was John Peel's favourite song of all time. It is just perfect. I love it too. The rest of the album was pretty good too! Hard to find one that stood out like that though. Wish this was a 3.5

Pretty darn good but bit repetitive, guess it was an innovative sound at the time though

It is fine.

Not my "Cup of Tea", but still easy liastening

It's beginning to sound a bit dated now, but it's fared a lot better than most of the punk albums from that era.

Pretty standard 70s punk. Not the worst of its kind but nowhere near the best.

Would have been an appropriate listen in the early 70's... Seems a bit too late for 79

Catchy mix of punk and pop.

I wasn't of listening age when this album came out, and my house had precious little music to begin with. I missed this during the relevant time period, and the US definitely didn't privilege these guys. It's competent work, and the NI significance isn't lost on me, but there's nothing here that makes me sit up and say, "Where have you been all my life."

I enjoyed this album. It was energetic and very enjoyable.

Are teenage dreams so hard to beat?

A great angular, teenage, British punk album. Simple, catchy, edgy, about great teenage things like kicks and girls and hanging out. Great energy although a bit moth-eaten now. No teenager would be caught dead listening anymore and that's for the best. Youth is ephemeral like it's culture. Clinging to this album is like clinging to a hairline. In summary, a good album long dead

Mezzo-mezzo on this.

It’s was a good album and had a grooving sound but was lacking in more extensive uniqueness but was more a just an album you give to, maybe have it on in the background

Re-release was way better than the first. Tempted to give it a 4 for Teenage Kicks and You've Got My Number but nah. 3 it is.

Oooh this is that punchy, short punk that gets me going. Spectacular instrumentally, but the songs were poorly constructed. Almost felt like they were stuck in the sock hop era for a band from the 70s. Not to mention all the repetition in the songs even though they were all less than 3 minutes. I liked it, but I could’ve liked it more.

Härliga, snabba och enkla melodier som jag förknippar med band som The Clash och The Ramones. Humörhöjare. Bäst: Here comes the summer

Repetitive

Poor little Jimmles

fine, nothing world shaking, just fine. voice kind of annoying. whatever.

This was a fun listen.

Fun Punk

Nice listen, enjoyed the lyrics and riffs. Would listen again.

Quite a few good songs on this album. Easy to get to know and enjoy. 3.5

musiciens irlandais sympathiques

Feargal has a great voice. However it is quite repetitive, 16 tracks all with simplistic punk chord progressions. Teenage Kicks still a classic.

A band I've known of for years, but never really listened to. Interesting for historical reasons, but I think the Ramones do this better.

Interesting early punk album

Two albums for this band seems excessive to me. They're fun and upbeat but nothing to really write home about to me.

klingt ganz nice erstes hören: vllt so 3/5 Sternen ^^

When I first saw this album, I confused the Deftones with Undertones and was expecting something completely different than what I heard. This was a fun album. 16 songs in 35 minutes and I think I enjoyed most them. Good, fast, fun and upbeat. Favorite was I gotta getta, but really liked Girls don't like it and Male model. Very surprised this was as old as it was. I listened last week and had a few notes, but re-listened this morning just to confirm this was a solid album.

Diet Buzzcocks. 3

Leuk pop punk plaatje

Okay garage rock! Lidt intet sigende

quick, upbeat and energetic but also pretty dumb! 6/10

6/10. Maybe worth a 7, but I've been being too generous lately. There were a couple songs I kinda liked, and the general sound was nice enough, but nothing really stood out to me as worth remembering.

Ehhh fine. Good energy. 6/10

Fun album. Favorite track: Jump Boys

Funny 80s pop punk record, nothing ground breaking in there but still an easy listen.

I know a girl

Good for what it is, super early punk. It probably broke a lot of ground and influenced many many other groups. But it's not really my style

Good straightforward punk.

A nice wee nugget of a Punk album. A bit of reading required on the context of this band and the time period and you'll appreciate their place in music history a great deal more. That being said, there are certainly Punk albums on this list I find more personally engaging. A nice discovery, but not one I'll return to that often.

Definitely a fun album, I enjoyed the song dedicated to mars bars. Still some strong 60’s boyband influences that I’m not so keen on but for a debut album it’s pretty good, bet it got the crowds going wild way back when

It would be a good album to be getting absolutely shitfaced to but once you peer between the lines it’s then you realise the album isn’t that much beyond surface level Punk Rock.

I’d never heard of this band but they do very much sound like contemporaries of The Clash and Ramones. Probably wouldn’t listen again but I enjoyed it all the same.

Better than the one i listened to before this one, but all the songs still sounded too similar still for me.

Pretty good, I'm pleasantly surprised. Most of the tracks on here are upbeat and fun to listen to. This would definitely be a 3.5 if I could give it that if only because from what I've heard of The Ramones, they seem to be a better version of this band's music.

Cool old style punk

Poggers

This is one I'd give a 3.5 if I could, and as it's not a 4 star it's been downgraded to 3. Many of these songs we part of my introduction to punk, living in Ireland in the late 70s, early 80s, so it definitely induces some nostalgia for me. Raw, fast, simple and fun. Jimmy Jimmy and Here comes the Summer are two stand outs for me, but its Teeange Kicks that's one of my all time favorites from this era.

simple but efficient. Not my style though

Classic British/Irish punk

No me ha encantado, 3

this album was a great mix of pop and punk and rather reflective of music in 1979, i think. i suppose it's punk that's easier to consume because it wasn't as unrefined as other punk can be. i mean, the whole album did have a great beat going. and it could be quite catchy! the lyrics definitely come off as pop-like. an enjoyable listen and wasn't upset about listening to the album a few times.

I actually dug this quite a bit. It was a nice fusion of upbeat, melodic pop punk music mixed with new wave. I felt like it was still allowed to exhibit that punk spirit but without being as messy or chaotic as some punk, which isn't typically my cup of tea. Most of the songs here were jarringly short, but it worked for The Undertones; they had something brief to say, so they said it, and then they were done. Period. While I would say this was good, I wouldn't say it is as great as other pop punk/new wave combo acts that would rise during this era.

Cool album, interesting to hear an early form of punk rock

The Clash I didn't know about...

Punk rock. Tight songs.

Learned about the Undertones for the 1st time about a year ago, in a Derry museum. And I wasn’t immediately hooked listening to their most famous song “Teenage Kicks”, but now that I’ve heard the whole album it’s one of the better songs on one of the better punk albums I’ve heard on the list. 3 1/2 August 10, 2022

Pretty good. Raw. 3/5

Enjoyed the punk/new wave sounds

Pretty forward-sounding pop-punk from 1979. I'd say this is like accessible-punk, nothing bad but doesn't move me like other punk. Teenage Kicks is fun though.

For something solidly in the Buzzcocks vein, this self-titled was a surprisingly conflicting listen. It absolutely requires the single inclusions: Without them, the highs are nowhere near high enough, the curios buried in the tracklist, Casbah Rock's shift in timbre literally at the end. This kind of music is absolutely over-represented on the list, yet the longer I stayed in the Undertones' world the more fun I had with the music. I don't see this sound going anywhere other than all the way into post-punk (a development I would welcome), but there's a sheen of experimentation and Irish friction just under the undisturbed pop-punk surface.

This is totally in my Q Zone

Love teenage kicks, first time having a deeper dive into a undertones album. This is good but maybe gets a bit repetitive

I'm always a bit amazed when I listen to punk bands of this era and find them anything but punk. A result of the generation I was born as they had moved the needle as to what punk is.

So, fan of the Undertones but only really heard those singles. This is all good fun, none of the first 5 are really getting their hooks in me before they're already finished, but hey that's ok, another one will be along in less than 2 minutes. And I guess that's the point. Feargal sounds a bit like Hugh Cornwell on Jump Boys in places, the first song that stands out for me. Here Comes the Summer is fantastic obviously. In, shake it all about, out, done, in a minute and a half. Bosh. True Confessions really stands out from the jangle pop that surrounds it, great stuff. And after that, more fun, fine but fairly forgettable pop punk. So there's 5 terrific tracks here in the middle for me.

Simpa. Ima neki feel good flimski soundtrack vibe

Not an overly special new wave type album. A lot of songs with a short run time.

This was fine. Not a mind blowing piece of music or anything.

A lot of songs, the brilliant Teenage Kicks eclipsing them all

New heard of this band in my life. Pretty cool stuff! I like the guitar interplay. So many times, when I try to listen to punk/post-punk bands like this, I get two songs into the record and decide it's too one-dimensional. Obviously, this 1001 Records exercise doesn't allow me to abandon ship. But I also don't think I would have bailed if I had the option.

upbeat, early punk. More poppy with a touch more 60s garage rock than the Sex Pistols but clearly of the same era. Was obviously familiar with "Teenage Kicks" but didn't know any of the other stuff.

It was a good boppy pop punk album that really showcased the youth of the time. Best: Teenage Kicks Worst: I know a Girl Note: Listened to the 2016 remastered version on Spotify to avoid the anniversary edition.

Not as big a fan as I probably should have been.

Not my style

I like the Undertones but I'm not able to give them a top rating as their music and lyrics are fairly simple.

Some classic tracks and it still sounds youthful and fresh. I liked it more than I'd expected I might. Some of the lyrics haven't aged that well though.

Very much a sound of its times. Got repetitive pretty quickly.

Enjoyable and boppy but immediately left my mind when I finished it True Confessions is pretty cool Obviously Teenage Kicks is a classic and absolutely 10/10

This album was a lot of fun, and Teenage Kicks is very catchy. Some of the songs were annoyingly repetitive, but a good time overall.

This was fun! Classic pop punk and far less annoying than the Ramones, this has aged very well. All the songs did blend into one a little bit, and the obvious highlight Teenage Kicks seems to have not actually been on the original tracklist

I dig it

Good, but unremarkable.

teenage kicks right through the night

This is some of the more listenable early punk I've heard.

I was pleasantly surprised. A band Ive always heard of but for some reason never listened to. Glad I did

Good punk sounds.

Interesting!

Raw youthful punk. Doesn't really stand out though.

Thought it was pretty decent. I kind of got Dead Kennedys vibes from it. But I don't think I liked it anywhere near as much as them.

2022.01.06

album was fine, but reminded me of a knock off ramones. Songs are short and sweet with some nice grooves but nothing to write home about.

Another album from these punksters, and another grab bag of some pretty good punk songs. I can't say I needed another album from these guys, but I can't say I didn't enjoy it either. A few songs I'll take away, but not much else. Really wish there was more that sounded like "Casbah Rock," that was like a punk ancient artifact. Favorite tracks: Casbah Rock, Get Over You, Runaround. Album art: Band pic, shaped like a (casbah?) rock? Nothing crazy, but the design is pretty nice. 3/5

I work in the water industry, and Feargal Sharkey is a prominent environmental activist in the same sector. I sometimes meet him and have to stay cool and professional, while my brain is shouting "Hump his leg! This is the bloke who wrote Teenage Kicks and My Perfect Cousin!". It's a difficult line to walk. I've only ever known the Undertones as a singles band (like most punk bands I suppose) and had a best of growing up. The album has some great songs on it, but in between those, there are 2 to 3 minute songs which run out of steam after about a minute and just carry on. It still has Here Comes the Summer, Teenage Kicks (which was left off the first pressing!) and Jimmy Jimmy so it's by no means a bad album, but of its half hour run time, only 15 minutes or so is actually essential.

Early punk. Nothing stupendous but still fun throughout.

Simple, straightforward but enjoyable punk with almost a 50s vibe of their lyrics.

Seems like every couple of weeks I get an album that's supposed to be punk royalty, and I don't think I've been impressed by one of them yet. I thought I liked punk. Maybe I don't. Best track: Billy's Third

It's 1979 and punk hasn't died yet. Whereas other groups moved on to post-punk, hardcore, or New Wave, these guys were doing pop music with the very same fun themes that made the Ramones so special. Which makes sense with that similar greyscale cover. It's lofi and raw with a passionate vocalist, to engage both punk fans and the popular audience, but I find a lot of songs to be hit or miss. Some grab your attention while others fade to the background. Opening two songs were decent, picked up in the middle from "Teenage Kicks" but started to lose interest by "Billy's Third." Favorites: Teenage Kicks, Here Comes the Summer, Get Over You, She's a Runaround

It was fine. Nothing special, nothing terrible.

Diet Ramones? Poppy. Ignorable. Safe. But not bad.

Certainly, there is nothing profound about the Undertones. This is basic punk shorn of rancor and politics. But The Undertone's energy, sincerity, and utter lack of pretension won me over. The way they attack these big dumb hooks and elemental arrangements as though they were brand new and original is endearing. There are plenty of bands whose members are teenagers but here it's painfully obvious and kind of sweet. As to why they are on this list, I can only imagine that it's because the band is influential. Without them, would a band like Blink 182 even exist? Not that the world especially needs punk-pop or anything. How to rate? I mean, The Undertones executes their concept perfectly--the hooks and energy never flag, and the musicianship, while basic, is solid. But surely ambition counts for something? I can't bear to give them more than a 3.5/5, but I'll put this album on my late 70s Spotify station.

Solid punk basis with pop sensibilities on top. Nothing to write home about (especially some stale non-starters in the back half), but enjoyable rock all around.

3.8 - Others have commented on this album’s youthfulness and that’s exactly what I’m hearing. Youthful in a good way, not in an annoying way, like the Shaggs.

Plenty of honest tenured tracks, with a certain simplicity.

Probably would have preferred an earlier album than a best of collection

Pretty decent batch of punk tunes, with a real Buzzcocks sensibility. Clearly these guys know how to play their instruments well, which sets them apart from other bands in the genre.

It was fun! Good rock n roll.

Not much variety from song to song but I appreciate their youthful exuberance. I hear a few of these songs fairly often when my husband's choosing the music --- Family Entertainment, Here Comes the Summer, Get Over You (which I guess wasn't on the original LP and was a bonus track on the digital stream I found) --- but most of these were new to me. Really liked Billy's Third, Male Model, and I Know a Girl. It's not a style of music that I feel the need to seek out but I don't hate it.

Early punk rock

Pretty solid. Commercial punk is fun.

Good. Didn't blow me away.

Perusjytkeelle peruskolmonen.

Uusi, varsin positiivinen tuttavuus.

This is some nice early pop-punk, really catchy.

Into it

really cool album

Awesome rock album, some parts I didn't care for but some 5 star songs

New band, new music for me. The opening track sounded like it was related to music that I would listen to. A couple of songs I'm not sure about, but we'll give this album an "okay"

I enjoyed it, but I just kept thinking to myself “The Clash and The Ramones did it better.” But I always have that hang up with punk rock. There has to be something in it that’s unique. I did not really find it here. Maybe I need to listen to it again, I dunno….

Previously listened to the second Undertones album. This is their first album and my reaction is pretty much the same. Fun band, catchy tunes, nothing I'd go out of my way to listen to. Solid 3.

It was an alright album. Nothing really well known.

Fun to see some early Irish punk, but not much else stands out or warrants another listen.

Bueno.

Está simplón, pero con calidá

Never heard of them…decent album

Liked it. Lots of short, poppy, punk songs. Not much variety, but the songs are great.

2nd August 2021 Listened on the living room speaker with jen while we both worked at the kitchen table. Love that it reminds me of good vibrations, teenage kicks obviously amazing but the hour does get a bit samey.

decent rock album.

I can appreciate that this is pop punk done well, but pop punk's not really my thing. There are some great tracks on here, but a whole album of it wears a bit thin. Fave track - "Teenage Kicks" is an absolute tune. Also really liked "Billy's Third" and "True Confessions"

Excellent album of pop punk.

All of the songs have the generic 'late-70s pseudo-punk' sound. Like, all of them. Almost exactly the same.

For the kind of punk this is, it's pretty good. But I just can't really subject myself to punk that lacks any sense of grit or danger (I would even consider the Spiral Scratch EP to be more edgy than this and that's on the weaker end of it). Don't get me wrong, there are some bangers like Wrong Way or the opening track. Definitely not boring punk. I just need my punk to be way more abrasive. I find the lyrics to be pretty vacuous. Almost every fucking song is some kind of love song and ya that's just not my thing done in the traditional sense exemplified here. This might have came out in 79 but there are some things here that I associate with 80's corny white dude music. I dunno, I wasn't around when this album came out so I have no frame of reference. It's definitely not bad. Sorry John Peel.

Enjoyed it, better then average? Probably like a 3.5 stars

Quite the energetic set of tracks! Had not heard this band or album before (although I seem to recall the name Feargul Sharkey from something in the 80s, but can't recall what), and it's fun. Very much in that punk-leading-into-new-wave sound, and it's got some catchy tunes here. I enjoyed this one more than I expected to; really feels like pop (in a good way) but it's more raw.

Short album. Short songs. I enjoyed it and it didn't wear out it's welcome.

Nothing special really

So obviously 'Teenage Kicks' is an absolute banger of a song and 'Top Twenty' is pretty great too. I'd never seen a regular studio album with 26 songs on it before so fair play to The Undertones for that I suppose (even thought most are 2 seconds long)! 'Here Comes The Summer' is a pretty good tune as well. Generally, this album is littered with pretty decent little tunes but quantity over quality does ring true here I think. I'm not sure why they felt the need to put 26 tracks on one album but I'm not complaining too much as I think songs like 'Mars Bars' are pretty hilarious. Seems like The Libertines may have taken some influence from these punk rockers too so we can certainly thank The Undertones for that. Decent album. 'One Way Love' gets an honourable mention too as I've got a but of a soft spot for that one.

3.7 fun punk pop fronm the 70s. IMO underrated irish punk band

Punk is not dead but it still hasn't learned how to play the guitar

Solid punk rock album. A lot of it blended together for me, but this genre usually has that effect on me.

Enjoyable enough. Seems to capture certain place and time. Sounds like early The Jam to me.

If it is good enough for John Peel, it is good enough for me.

The Offspring's pioneering grandfather. kind of like a 3.5, most of the songs didn't stick with me but it was a pleasant enough time.

Catchy punk pop. Bouncy and fun. What's not to like?

An easy 3. No weak tracks but no massive standouts either. Teenage Kicks not on the album proper

Punk rock standard music, had some bangers but nothing out of the ordinary within the genre

Punk rock. Bastante interesante.

Correct.

Sounds like pretty standard whiny pop punk rock to me. A couple of interesting sounds here and there, but it's probably more historically important than it is fun to listen to.

Solid pop punk. Teenage Kicks is a classic. 6/10

Pretty good stuff. Wasn't really familiar with them before other than the song Teenage Kicks. Good basic punk rock. 3 stars.

Liked not loved

It's not bad, but I prefer other styles of music.

British Rock. Not completely my taste but definitely uplifting and fun to listen to. Maybe listen again on a road trip.

I don't know about the lyrics, but I've enjoyed it

I've about had my fill of the UK punkish rock foundations. I can recognize this as objectively good (for what it is) though it does suffer from the now tired refrain of monotony of tone.

More my kind of thing. Nice to hear something other than Teenage Kicks, but can see why that became the big hit. That had a full lyric. The rest of the album was eight lines spread across 16 tracks.

it was fine. music I like genre wise. would maybe relisten to a few tracks

easy to listen to punk i like it

A really fun, fast paced race through some of their songs, this Undertones album reminded me of Titus andronicus and the likes. A feel of early 2000s garage bands that focus mostly on thrashy, punk rock, I really enjoyed this album and what it brought to the table. Plus, everyone is Irish, so that rules

Good pop punk album. I could see it being pretty influential.

Classic English punk

Doesn’t take itself seriously which makes it a fun listen

Enthusiasm. Attitude. What an energetic listen! 3.5

Punky, but not too noisy. I don't much care for this but the guy is actually singing instead of shouting, which is a lot more than can be said for lots of the punk and punk-adjacent music on this list

Very forgettable album.

I frankly forgot what my thoughts were because it was a pointless album

Just general rock stuff

More punk from the UK

I didn't have the teenage part of my life that made punk sound good to me.

Bleh punkish but inoffensive enough to merit a 2

KEXP happened to play Here Comes the Summer today and I thought "meh this is pretty basic punk." Well here we are. Inoffensive over all but not particularly enjoyable as well. 2.4/5 -> 2/5

Teenage kicks !

It was alright

Yeah I’m tired of the British punk/rock. This list is kind of biased

Rapid fire, albeit somewhat generic, early punk rock. 2.5

I'm usually into punk rock, but this wasn't great.

Repetitive and dull rock

straight to the point punkpoprock 2.5+/5

British punk, punchy short songs with not much going on... ah well at least the album was short 2/5

Little bit-sized songs that I would generally consider too short to be memorable. ADHD-ass Undertones. Teenage Kicks is the only thing that stood out to me, the rest is pretty much just early mod music.

I mean... It's okay? It gets repetitive and the songs are too short to really get into them.

Coming on the heels of a dreadful chore of an album, these boys were poised for a big victory. My ears were aching for sthg great. And then this happened. Ya’ BASIC. I suppose being early on the scene means boundaries are not yet pushed. But good lord. If I was groaning under the tortuous strain of the previous album, this one bored me almost to unconsciousness.

My parents were both Belfast punks, so I've always been instinctively on the side of Jimmy Jimmy and Kevin the perfect cousin who likes The Human League. I was prepared, then, to give The Undertones debut a bit of a drubbing. However, like my father's own pop-punk outfit at the time, I can't really do it. Yes, it's because they're just young lads. Yes, it's because they're from Northern Ireland. But, also, because they do have pop chops, where others are hindered by punk sloppiness or powered by aimless anger. These are charming little spurts of energy that, no doubt, would have been a thrill to hear or play at the time. The last few records we've heard listened have all clocked in at 35 minutes. Objectively this is the perfect length for an album. But it didn't help Steely Dan's smugness much. It did nothing to combat the flatness of Little Simz. And here, it is no aid to The Undertones' brevity. Their songs are so short that there ends up being too many of them on the record. On too much of Feargal's warble. Or too much of something. Somehow, this is too much. 2 The Undertones is a harmless act. Sweet and easy listening compared to most acts that came labelled ‘punk’. Most of these little blobs of pop-punk should be perfectly digestible. But I personally will never be able to get on with them because of Feargal Sharkey’s voice. That weird vibrato goes through me like a knife. 1.5/5

really did not like it especially the last song girls omfg

watered down punks with only 1 good song Although honestly that song isn't even that good

Teenage Kicks //

Not for me. More like a musical history than music I'd listen to on purpose

Average

Nothing interesting to say about for me

Best Song: Teenage Kicks

I lived in Derry for 5 years so I’ve heard my share of Undertones whether I wanted to or not. Is this a safe space to say I think they’re only okay?

General punk. Nothing special

it was pretty fun. a few bangers and a few stinkers. i thought the last track was way too short, not good and incredibly low audio quality compared to the rest of the album. i gave it a 62 on aoty. sometimes classic punk is a bit too repetitive for me though i think you couldve sang blitzkrieg bop by the ramones over like 9 of these songs and get away with it

It’s fun and moves quick, but it’s still more bounce than feeling.

hey this is a pretty good time! the back half is meh but i like male model and here comes the summer.

Boring

Apart from the good song I can’t think of a single reason as to why this album is on this list. Good song saves it from a 1 star

I mean, sure

Pretty bland

2 sterren.

I thought I would like this but I dont

Girls don’t like it

Previously unknown. Fun.

Maybe I was in a bad mood already but this is making it worse. I won’t give it a 1 because it’s actual music I guess but I really hate this. Idk maybe it was just 6am and not the right time for it.

You can’t just say the same thing over and over again dude

A rather ordinary band with OK tunes.

Fun but pretty reptitive

Underwhelming! Almost all of it sounded like the same song with droning vocals.

Classic indie rock

I'm all about post-punk, but pop-punk is a completely different story.

Extremely watered down punk about getting girls and some other harmless stuff. Where's my 'stick it to the man' songs and where is the message bro. Punk to listen to with your uptight parents. All songs kind of blended together and I got very bored. Not a 1 because some of the music itself was aight.

2/5 Boring album, nothing outstanding. 2 instead of a 1 because it's still listenable, but I genuinely could not tell you any song I just heard.

This sounds like the band that plays at the high school dance of a lame 70s or 80s teenage movie. I'm guessing that the reason this is on the 1001 list is that Robert Dimery got his first kiss while this was on in the background.

I've heard this era of rock/punk a few time before. It's wearing a little thin

What the fuck, I just gave their second album a middling score and now I find out they have TWO albums on this list? Why??

Not really my thing but it’s decent, I like the Ramones a little better

Zu anstrengend

Loving the Derry accent, but not my thing

I can appreciate that this was an early foray into upbeat, non-cynical punk about girls and boredom instead of politics and aggression. And I can especially appreciate that it was notably written in Ireland during the Troubles, when it was probably tough to NOT be cynical and political. But appreciating the context of cutesy, vapid punk is not the same as enjoying cutesy, vapid punk. Most of these songs are fun enough but ultimately a little forgettable. “Teenage Kicks” and “Jump Boys” are infectious, the rest didn’t make much of an impression on me.

My ymse på 1001 album ass

This was a fun group. I Remembered one of the songs from the movie Derry Girls.

Not the ticket for me. Teleported to Jake playing their songs at mums 45th(?).
