Yeah! Punk music! Hell yeah!
Unexpected but enjoyable. Raw, fresh, naive, 50s pop combined with new wave. Sound like a bunch of lads who have just got their instruments and having a blast. Simple direct songs. No over production going on here. Cover art 1/5
Groovy
After all these years, the tones on that album sound super fresh, a fun album from start to finish!
Fun upbeat energetic punk. Early punk Rock feel. I'd go back to this. 4/5
Punky, kinda fun and upbeat
Easy listening and fun garage punk album of a band I'm glad to have discovered. The lyrics are quite plain and straightforward, but they are great at expressing the wishes and fears of the British youth of the time. There are some bangers, the most notable being Teenage Kicks, but I personally enjoyed a lot the keyboard version of True Confessions.
Listened before? N This is my first known exposure to The Undertones. This was a nice surprise. I thoroughly enjoyed it! Pros: Rocking, Peppy, Punk-ish. Referred to as pop-punk by Wikipedia, I pretty much agree. It's not modern-style pop-punk, but it is pop-punk nonetheless. You can hear the influence of The Ramones all over this record. Anyway, all of this is good news for me. I really liked this album. Cons: Repetitive lyrics (it's old-school punk, so this is expected), a couple of songs just didn't do it for me. Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: Teenage Kicks, Get Over You
High energy with some rock-a-billy undertones. Hah, undertones... that wasn't intended but it fits. Digging this album.
A band I had never heard of with a really solid album. If you had told me it came out 3 years ago, I'd have believed you. Definitely didn't sound like it came out in 1979.
I am have nothing to say
It's a great album! Fun to listen to and catchy tunes... Loved the guitar and harmonies!
Great album. Love the band.
not bad
Sounds like a basic rock record, good tho
Very fun album. Definitely a pleasant listen.
Fun stuff
Pop-punk. No está mal.
Struggle with Feargal Sharkey's voice but it's energetic punky
So much of this sounds like Delay. I hear a little Against Me! in here at times as well. I like this a lot. Very melodic punk. Proto pop punk even.
Can’t dismiss The Undertones as just another punk rock group. I gave it a good listen and heard influences from the styles of the 50’s through the 70’s and yet their sound is original. I especially liked the guitar on Teenage Kicks. They push so hard on Jump Boys that the drummer can’t keep up with the fills! Solid album.
Gotta say I liked their second album better. This one is still fun and energetic, and they know how to hook you to start an album (Family Entertainment is a great/catchy opening track and Girls Don't Like it is similar at #2). But it was a bit more uneven and didn't always keep ahold of me. I know their style and this whole genre is often juvenile, but some songs I thought "really, you wrote about that?" (case in point, Mars Bars...and I love Mars bars). The main guitar riff in Teenage Kicks sounds oh so familiar - like they ripped off Anarchy in the UK or God Save the Queen. Or maybe some song after them that I know ripped them off? Still a good tune, but left me wondering. Might be rating them a bit high because of how much I liked their sophomore release.
It's funny. I wasn't too excited about the other album from The Undertones but this album was a good solid rocker from start to finish. I can imagine that these guys were a real hit live.
dopeness
Urgent
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Family entertainment, Girls don’t like it, Billy’s third, Emergency cases, Mars bars
Simple and cool as fuck.
Straight ahead punk
-Nice, solid classic rock-esque album -I liked it, although nothing stood out -probably go back and relisten to most tracks
The precursor to my beloved pop punk! I’m a sucker for this sort of thing and found this to be an incredibly enjoyable listen that I had on repeat all day.
This is a good one to bring up the mood from work too. The recording quality doesn't seem quite as good as Ash - 1977, but it is also two decades older. Probably still going to give this a 4.
Excellent
Enjoyed this a lot more than I thought! I usually don’t dig the original punk bands so much, this was a great album!
Great early pop punk. Fun and simple
she's a runaround
You can feel that 70s vibe. Really enjoyed it, but again long.
Enjoyed this- "over you" being my favourite. The Vaccines doing a good job of keeping this sound relevant today
Me gustaron Get over you y One Way Love.
Was v tempted to give a 5. Very consistent considering the number of tracks
Upbringing sunny post punk effort with great melodies
Hey ! Hey ! Hey ! Yeah 3.7
I'm torn, because the highlights are simply great, but there's a fair bit of material that just churns away. When it works well, Sharkey's odd, bleating voice and the frequent use of repetition is electrifying - 'Here Comes The Summer' being the prime example - but songs fall flat when it misses. Also - I'm not a teenager in the late 1970s, to whom this no doubt sounded fresh and exciting, a marriage of punk spikiness and pop sweetness, but here in 2021 it doesn't quite pack the wallop. Still, there's considerable craft and some nimble songwriting on display here, so a solid four stars from me.
Me gustaron "Here Comes the Summer", "True Confessions (Keyboard Version)", "One Way Love" y "Top Twenty". 8/10
nice hip punk shit
I liked the stripped down sound, driving drums
More brit rock, hell yeah. Enjoyed the stranglers more, but these guys are clearly Alt. Rock of my youth, just transported to the early 80s
Never heard of this album or band previously. This is pretty great.
Solid early punk
THIS IS SO GOOD
Really fun! Gotta love Mars Bars
I like a few of the songs they feel very soundtrack walking to the pub lol but some of them are annoying
Heerlijke authentieke punk
Some great simple, melodic pop punk tunes.
Catchy short tunes. Leaves you wanting more. Enjoyed this album
Good Irish punk
Didn’t finish the album yet, but I liked what I heard😎
Last 3 tracks easily the best. Boss lyrics for days. Not my usual thing but enjoyable enough to listen to again. 7/10
Just a solid little album.
With breakneck precision and attention given to the climate that would house such material, The Undertones crafted a gritty and realistic power pop-punk album that runs the gamut in regards to the topics at hand and the emotions it elicits. Teenage Kicks, and John Peel's long known endorsement of it, is the key to the whole shebang but the whole album of just as worthy of that adulation. Favorites: Family Entertainment, Male Model, Teenage Kicks, Jump Boys, Here Comes the Summer, Get Over You, Billy's Third, (She's a) Runaround, I Know a Girl.
Catchy, punchy 70's punk. Maybe a tad same-y throughout, but I always appreciate these quick punk rock albums. Angsty, moody, but no frills and right to the point. Good show, now I can proceed with my morning.
ok
this album is fine. it's some pretty decent pop punk, although it's of an earlier style than i usually listen to. it's not got much bite to it though really? i guess i prefer my pop punk a little on the punkier side. i like the energy of it, the vocal vibrato is fun, and sometimes there's an electric organ which obviously i enjoyed. but overall the sound is just, very standard for pop punk of the time, and doesn't really stand out in that context. i suspect it's only here cos of "teenage kicks", but that's not even on the original release, so who can say. wouldn't be the first time something like this has happened though. that fucking cornershop album springs to mind...... i guess it's another "ascended 2" situation. i like the sound well enough but i'm not actively seeking out any of the tracks on here, yknow?
This is good, but not great. I tend to lean more towards post punk and hardcore rather than pop punk. This album is also a little too Bri'ish for me (I guess you had to be there). Still a pretty decent album though, but not something I would seek out again. Mid 3.
Good pair with Iggy the day before.
It’s a fun listen and of course there are some obvious bangers. I like a wee bit more variety though so this isn’t really for m. Also not a fan of that Sharkey warble. Still gets a 3 though
I was engaged. 3.5.
a short record, and maybe that’s why it still works: it doesn’t overstay the feeling.
Fergal Sharkey, great name! Leader singer of a great pop punk band that had some great songs and now he is campaigning to save our rivers. Good on you and thanks. PS enjoyed the album!
Back to back I am guess late 70s British punk rock that apparently was all the rage then. Like the last record more polished then let’s say the Sex Pistols. Couple catchy songs. But kinda corny at the same time. It’s fine. There’s a market - give the people what they want.
the lyrics were a bit rancid at times (and i don't mean the band; i mean that the lyrics were smelly and gross) but the music was good and it was easy to listen to - nice guitar tones and if i didn't have a bunk knee i would have been dancing
Less polished than the Buzzcocks, more garage than the Ramones
p435. 1979. 3 stars. Almost perfect 34 minutes of punk/pop. Great riffs and tunes, let down by filler. When it's good, it's brilliant. There is a direct line from this to Green Day.
Good punk. Sounds a bit like the clash but not as political
J'ai bien aimé!
Fun, light punky power pop that is a catchy, easy listen. Songs are pretty straightforward with a backbeat and brief melodic riffs, the singer’s somewhat kooky voice singing songs of late adolescence. Songs can be a bit same-y, but they’re also short and quick with minimal thrills. Is it revolutionary? Not quite. Is it a fun listen with a few earworms to lodge in your brain? Certainly.
Fine. Like a knockoff Clash. British.
Another Meh. Lyrics boring & repetitive. Music was fine but nothing I’ll seek out again
Mashup of a bunch of different punk sounds. Not terrible.
meh
𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘜𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘴 sits somewhere between punk rock and new wave. The songs have the speed and energy of punk, but they’re far more melodic than a lot of bands from that scene. As a result, the album is easy to listen to and generally enjoyable throughout. What stands out most is how straightforward it all is. The band focuses on catchy songs rather than attitude or experimentation, and for the most part that works. Nothing here completely blows me away, but it’s a solid record that knows exactly what it wants to be.
This is a tough one cuz there isn't a bad track on the record, but there aren't any REALstandouts either. The track True Confessions had me holding on for more, hoping they introduced a more varied style, but alas. The subject matter remains juvenile, however relatable.
Good instrumentals and good lyrics. It was a very fun album to listen to, just good music in general. Although, nothing stands out to me like it did in other rock albums. Nonetheless, very excited, simple and good album. Favourite song in the album - Teenage Kicks/Here Comes the Summer No. of favourited songs - 2/16 Rating - 3/5
Fun, upbeat, clean rock.
Great length. Sounded fine, nothing I haven’t heard before though.
Very listenable! And short! Just not rlly my type of music. Reminds me of Cruisin for a Brusin from Teen Beach Movie
6/10
Short and sweet, pretty good punk vibes
It‘s a really good album tbh but the songs all sound very similar. That‘s not necessarily a bad thing. For me it always shows the character and uniqueness of an album but I think they could have had a bit more diversity in there but I still really liked the album and the sound of it although it could’ve been a bit more diverse (as I said).
I enjoyed the guitars on these tracks and the general straightforward and stripped down nature of the tracks with lots of hooks. I found the singers ululation a little bit grating sometimes. I recognized Teenage Kicks probably from some British punk playlists. Overall I would put on Wire or Sham69 or Swell Maps first if I'm in a British Punk mood. Maybe there is enough room on the list for them all
functional!
Fun. Sounds like a skateboarding album, but nothing I'm eager to revisit
Short, snappy and mostly pleasant, I think the first half of the album (all 15 minutes of it) is relatively decent pop punk and there were elements that might have inspired grungier sounds coming a decade later. However, it’s definitely more lighthearted and less countercultural than say the Sex Pistols. Teenage Kicks is a genuinely great song that has stood the test of time (maybe to a lesser extent Here Comes The Summer) but Jimmy Jimmy (I can’t believe this got released as a single) was repetitive to the point of oblivion. Most of the rest of the album, the tracks are so short that they don’t tend to stand out but are reasonable to listen to.
A mild-mannered punk that conjures up a flash of songs that inspire a carefree youth. Catchy hooks to keep you in the moderately fast lane. It's like each short format song and its jingle is the 70s version of music TikTok, getting you through the content and keeping your dopamine levels up. It does have merit in its punk form with a gritty vocal well suited to its punk roots, and the simple rock band assemble adds to the garage start up feel but not consistent though the entire album. Very 60s rock and roll at times e.g. "Get Over You" and the dodgy organ sound in "Here Comes the Summer" is an example where pop / rock doesn't add merit to this form of pop punk in my opinion. Not bad but cant see myself wanting to listen to this whole album by choice other than the occasional song visit.
Punky teenage kicks
nice
It's punk. some fun songs
203 / 1089. A worthy addition to the list, even if only as representation of Northern Ireland's punk scene in the 1970s and 1980s. "Teenage Kicks" is a piece of pop punk perfection. 7/10.
fine but not my style. liked a couple of songs in there
Honestly this reminded me a lot of the Ramones. I like their stuff- it all mostly sounds the same. I feel like they should have been more popular.
Not a bad album, but there are just too many other albums of this genre I would listen to first. 3 stars or C+.
Irish shit. Picks up with the teenage one, and has some fun bits, sounds a lot like everything else of the era and locale in large part.
"punk-pop" seems really obvious listening to them. And in that sense, they are energetic, with simple but catchy songs. I think that despite their abilities to make songs that don't feel as repetitive or monotone like other punk bands, they also can be a lot, 26 in some release. And that makes it a lot different in the experience. 10 good punk songs under 30 minutes are a good experience. An hour, not so much.
I really hate the way he drags out some of the tones.. it's pretty distinct for him. Reaaallly playing with the border between punk and new wave..
Never heard of these guys before, though this is obviously a punk album when going by the cover, band name and year of release. Honestly, I'm kind of growing to love the punk albums. Not because I think the music is any good, but because the genre predictions are always really quick to write and the albums are 35 minutes at most. Let's get into it. Yeah, another punk album awight. Maybe I'm just getting used to the punk style, but I thought this was a better offering than my other outings with the genre. The most noteworthy aspect of this music is how varied it is. The vocal melodies are jumpy and distinct, the guitar riffs are gripping and pack a lot of punch, there's an admirable level of variety to the music and the youthful lyrics are fun in how tongue-in-cheek they are. "True Confessions" is a particularly interesting song to me, both as one of the few subdued punk tracks I've listened to and for its proto-grunge guitars. The mixing is pretty good, too. This album toes a fine line between a noncommercial, lo-fi sound while also having a decent bit of depth to the instrumentals. Sadly, what hurts this album is what hurts most punk albums in my eyes - the track lengths. While I do commend this album for how varied and competent it is, the abrupt lengths do leave the songs feeling a little unsubstantial. Still, I think I can safely say that this is my favourite punk album I've listened to - at least from when the genre was in its prime. Book time. The Undertones are Irish - I wasn't expecting that. The band's biggest single "Teenage Kicks" was excluded from initial pressings of this album, presumably at the request of the band. The entry closes out by calling this album "...perfect pop." despite its short runtime. Wikipedia says this album was met with glowing acclaim from critics and has received enduring praise in the years since release, but doesn't appear to have charted anywhere. Yeah, I'm favourable to this album. It definitely has a leg above the other punk albums I've listened to, and it seems the critics would agree. I cosign this inclusion.
Middling. 3.5
I was completely unfamiliar with this album. At first, it seemed to be in the pocket of my taste, but… idk, as it went on, I wanted it to be over. I grew tired of it. Fast/ repetitive, not enough bass. It just didn’t work into me. It stayed on the surface and made me itchy. But I kept wanting to like it. Strange experience really. 3 stars for the desire it instilled for something more. Boolean: yes, I suppose so… but can’t say I would want to again.
Album 184. The Undertones — The Undertones (1979) 16 songs, but only 35 minutes. I like it. Very enjoyable and easy pop punk. 3/5 Liked: — Teenage Kicks — Get Over You
Buen álbum punk. Suelto, pegadizo. Entretenido.
Love the tone and sound! Wouldn’t regularly listen as it’s not quite new wave enough or not quite Beatles enough Favourite tracks: “male model” and “I gotta getta”
Yeah always find The Undertones annoying to listen to, I think it's high school themes and the singers voice😆
The English Ramones. It's fine but I can't see this changing anyone's life
solid
Pretty alright pop punk. I can definitely tell how it layed the blueprint for all the pop punk to follow in the 90's, similar to the Ramones. Not really my thing though. Key tracks: Teenage Kicks
Pretty basic britrock album.
There's nothing wrong with this album, but nothing stuck out to me. There isn't much charm here. I did like the album, though. I would listen to it again. Maybe one day I'll find the charm.
Very much the Clash to my ears.
I don't want to sound rude about this album, mostly because I do like listening to it, but it is pretty simple (and by today's standards) pretty tame. I also don't think it's particularly noteworthy. It is a solid listen, though. It's an album that almost everyone will not have strong feelings about. Maybe in the late 70s that would have been the case, but I'm not even sure about that, honestly. It's fine. Not something that I would say needed to be listened to before dying, though (unless I'm missing some important context). Favorite Song(s): I Gotta Getta, Get Over You
Dollar store Clash
I like their sound. They sound like a lot of the bands from the 60's and 70's, but I like it. Fun!
This album was difficult to find on YouTube, so we started off on a bad start already. Then, I see it's that immature teenage angst Punk, and I'm already getting nervous. As it turns out, it had some catchy tracks, and the production is excellent. It's still a bit angst-like though. Favorite Track: "Girls Don't Like It".
Enjoyable as far as punk goes
Solid fun. 3.5 stars.
Reasonable
Super solid mid-wave punk. Nothing super unique but danceable and fun. It’s just a little to one note?
Pretty fun album. The wobbly vocals aren’t my favorite but a product of the time I guess.
One of the better British punk albums on the list so far. Upbeat, quite energetic and a fair few catchy songs. The short runtime is nice. I like a short, snappy album and this was a good 'un.
Undertones are fun and very influential but I think this album was underwhelming, I think because teenage kicks is so good and the rest of their material doesn't live up to it. Kicks has a bit of heft and the other songs are a bit more breezy, nice for one listen but without hooking me back for another. Here comes the summer is the best of the bunch and the only one I recognised. Want to like this more than I do but think it falls into the more influential than genuinely great category.
it's 3.5
Sugar coated punk rock from and undervalued Undertones. Could literally hear the Go-Go's ripping them off in real time on some of the tracks.
Raw. Youthful. Energetic.
Fun, simple and lighthearted 3.5/5
Pop punk used to be one of my favorite genres and listening to this was really fun. I give it 3.5
Sure! It's loud. At this point in the list it doesn't sound super innovative, but, I suppose that's fine.
I was quite interested getting this. I knew and liked Teenage Kicks, having heard it via John Peel, but I'd never listened to more by the Undertones so I thought of this as a good chance to explore more. Glad I did, but it hasn't inspired me to get more into them. It isnt bad, it's decent enough punk but on balance not my thing. Appreciate it for what it is though, its well done and I'd like it more if I liked punk more.
nice guitars
Decent. Won’t be listening again though.
Good and fun. More punk than the other Undertones album on the list.
Good, fun, simple. They are here for a good time not a long time.
This was a fun rockin’ punk album. I like this debut better than the other album we just had but it didn’t quite jump up a star.
Im usually all in for this retro pop inspired punk rock but I have to say that it gets old after a while. I do still like this. Just it goes in too long for me. Cut a few tracks and it gets much more listenable. Couldn't tell you what can go but somethings gotta. I do like the old-school 50s or early 60s styled punk. Its always been good. Ramones rule and this is in the same vein. It feels like watching grease at 1.5x speed. Teenage love and chilling with your friends after the football game type vibes. Going to the sock hop. Its a fun thing. Im just overwhelmed by the 40 minutes here and like almost 20 tracks. Its alot. Still had some fun for sure. A couple saves. Good record for sure. Im just dogging on it some
Probably a ground breaking Brit punk album, but not much variety in musical value of each song.
As not a huge fan of punk or of the punk pop that this is clearly an early example of, I was somewhat surprised to find myself enjoying it! _Teenage kicks_ is obviously a highlight but even excluding that (which the original release apparently did), this would still have been a great listen, full of youthful energy Incidentally, it was only a couple of years ago I discovered that Feargal Sharkey was the singer for The Undertones.
Why does he sing like a sheep?
An average (soft) punk album. Not aggressive at all, not very original. The Clash, The Ramones did and The Toy Dolls is doing it better.
OK but not my cup of tea
Some good tunes some so so.
Buen disc punk.
I liked it!
Punk rock
Ramones, if they were 20% more polite and British
This was fine. Kinda fun, but largely unremarkable. 3.2
This was a cool album. I enjoyed listening to it and it wasn’t a long drawn out listen. Not the most spectacular album ever but it definitely was good.
original short attention span music...? I liked a few songs especially bc it was reminiscent of the clash, but crucially, the clash were more versatile. this just about grasps a 3
Enjoyed this more than I expected too, and John Peel had a point about Teenage Kicks.
The Clash did punk better, but I don’t think these guys were trying to beat the Clash. They seemed comfortable doing what they did, and for that I respect them.
i love the guitar work on this. any album with a bass solo is incredible. this is pretty good. so far i really just haven’t cared for tracks 2 and 4. it’s kinda falling off in the second half. true confessions is sick though.
Many great classics on this one, what a great first album!
Not all the songs played but I got enough. It was fine.
Fine little punk album that had at times what seemed to be splashes of pop punk, hints of The Dead Kennedys, and one song that was a bit Talking Heads-ish. 3.5⭐️
Yay, another obscure British punk album! It seems this band has one well-known song("Teenage Kicks"), so I don't get why they have two albums here. As for the actual album, it is very fast and punchy punk with pop hooks and lyrics. Nothing here is above average quality, and the lyrics are very standard. Even "Teenage Kicks" is distinctly average pop-punk from the late 1970s. It is a fun enough listen, and the songs are mercifully short, but I'd be hard pressed to call it essential listening. It is, however, preferable to the very similar-sounding Elvis Costello.
A debut punk album on the cusp of the 80s. There's a Northern Ireland lilt and attitude, though the musical content stays youthful and focused on lowercase troubles.
If you distill this list down into the absolute average album in both quality and sound, it’s this.
First time hearing this one. I like this type of music and they're pretty good, but my cup is already full. I don't need any more right now.
3.5./5
I enjoyed this album. The singers voice did get obnoxious towards The End.
Fun little record. Great sound.
Keep it in the Family is the siscon anthem i needed. this is pretty decent early pop punk, which doesn't quite have the energy that i love so much about the later stuff. the drums are definitely a big point against this to me. deserves to be one of the 1001? this is a pretty big part of 70s pop punk, maybe the most notable album by a band without "cock" in their name. i think it has enough importance
2026.02.04.
Quite good actually
Second album from this (to me) previously unknown band. The voice was immediately recognizable, though I hadn’t remembered the band name. I like this album well enough, like the last one, just wondering why there are 2 of them on here. The band didn’t seem to make it out of its own decade.
Good
A few bops
Voel me ontzettend aangesproken bij I don't wanna be a male model. Of naja, eigenlijk vrij zeker. FAVO: Family Entertainment, Teenage Kicks, Get Over You, True Confessions
There are a lot of albums in this era with a similar sound, but I think this is one of the better ones. The hits on this album are really solid, and the filler isn't too bar behind
Closer to 3.5
Very enjoyable. Reminded me of The Clash in very positive ways. I'd be happy to return to the Undertones any old time.
Liked it
I liked some songs and Teenage Kicks is 1D Herstory
Its ok, some catchy parts (I like "Jump Boys") but there are other albums like this that are better.
New to me. Pretty fun.
Some other user reviewed a thought that is very much my own. Some of these albums, such as this one, are enjoyable enough while they play, but you have no desire to purchase or remember them afterwards. Thankfully, this list has also led me to some albums I'd buy. So I'll continue despite the fact I think the Rolling Stones 500 greatest albums is a better list.
It was enjoyable.
Nice
A few good tunes, vocals aren’t my vibe
I think these guys liked girls
Yet another album that would have been completely fine to not be on this list. I’m getting more disappointed in this list by the day
Best Track - "Teenage Kicks"
I gave this a couple of listens. I enjoyed it, but also didn’t have any major takeaways from it. It’s hard to find value looking back on a band like this when bands like The Clash and Wire exist.
Etwas zu unsagend
3.5 Stars
Was hoping it would be more punk, but couldn't say I disliked the album.
Helt ok, litt pstereo vibes
Short songs, didn't stick long enough to get annoying, not a ton of hits but the ones that worked stick in your head
This was a fun listen! Great to learn more about these bands playing this style of music at a time that was just before I got into listening to music. I suppose I would not have been able to hear this back then anyways as they probably weren’t on mainstream am/fm radio but hearing it now it still sounds good!
Good. Highlights transition from punk to post-punk. Couple of guitar lines/sounds made me think of Peter Buck! That’s a good thing!
Lively. ★★★
whatever
Ok, don't really remember it but like an old school boy band.
“Are teenage dreams so hard to beat? Every time she walks down the street” Fun simple punk songs filling out a run time which whilst short is the perfect length to avoid outstaying its welcome. It is clear on one full listen why the standout track which saw The Undertones become one hit wonders is “Teenage Kicks”. It’s catchy, fun, and an all around good time. There are other tracks on here which offer similar such as “Girls Don’t Like It” but they don’t quite hit the same highs. Solid from start to finish and easy enough to listen to but doesn’t quite offer the same edge or intrigue as other punk albums released around the same time (see “London Calling” also 1979).
i liked that it had this witty, angsty lyricism to it which suited the composition of the songs, but i fear that it’s going to be a rather easily forgettable album for me
pop punk at best, great for kids finding their musical feet as it were. Lacks the anger to be effecive punk. pleasant enough ditties I suppose.
Sterile as anything. I wasn't keen but it's not the worst I've ever heard. Little boppy tunes suitable for the car I guess. I saw them live, an opening act at a free festival. That's what this album is ideal for: people who go to festivals because they're free, not because there's music on.
Just another one of those list albums that is like “yeah it’s rocky and sounds like 30 other bands on the list and had this one good track on it that justifies its inclusion on here but man I will forget this album in a week” Really nothing else to comment on it
I finally get the answer to the question I never asked: what if the Ramones were British?
Great record. This is like a 3,8
Fine, just nothing that truly sucked me in.
I listened to the wrong version of this album so I shouldn't give it points for "Teenage Kicks" I guess. I liked it overall, a good time. 3.5
bonus star cause i love feargal sharkey. this is tight and fast and punchy and an excellent harbinger of what was to come
Fun but why did they have at least two albums on here?
Short and sweet.
I would say above average punk rock record.
Fine
Tolerable positive-punk.
Simple
I enjoy the urgency the music has, but some of the vocals are frankly annoying (see Male Model and I Gotta Getta). Teenage dreams so hard to beat and that is true of Teenage Kicks , which is one of the best songs of all time. Here comes the summer also provides a catchy more poppy detour. Overall it cant help but feel a bit overshadowed by Teenage Kicks.
When you grow up in my part of the world it is to the soundtrack of The Undertones and, specifically, our unofficial national anthem - “Teenage Kicks”. It may be under that guise of nostalgia that I enjoyed this album as much as I did. Snappy and punchy songs of its punk era done in its own way - you’d be hard pressed to mistake Feargal Sharkey’s vocals for anyone else. As much as I enjoy “Here Comes the Summer”, “Get Over You”, and “Jimmy Jimmy”, it really is “Teenage Kicks” that stands out and does something odd inside my chest when I listen to that opening line. Yes, lyrically it’s a bit simplistic, and is pretty same-y sounding (“True Confessions” aside which at times reminded me of “I Feel Love” by Donna Summer, which was odd). It could lose a couple of tracks off the end. But it will always remind me of home.
It's good solid pop punk but not enough variety to score higher or keep me coming back.
Short, punchy, energetic. Simple lyrics and somewhat forgettable songs nevertheless are fun enough while they're playing that it draws no complaints from me. While it's not an album I would be hunting to put on, it's also one that I wouldn't mind coming up in the rotation every so often.
I'm going to issue the harshest insult for a 3 star album. It's a very poppy punk album. Just ok the edge of actual punk but not quite. Too many different chords in the songs (4-5), the lyrics are distinguishable and would like to tempo to be faster for a lot of the tracks. The number of songs < 3 minutes keeps to their punk roots though.
With a name like this, these guys should have waited a couple decades and come out as a late 90’s ska band.
Man, groups in the 70s just loved to sing about having sex with high school girls.
Very reminiscent of other early punk albums, like The Clash or The Ramones. Didn’t really stick out to me much though. Not bad, but not memorable.
Solid early pop punk per usual from the Undertones. 16 tracks in a little over 30 minutes is also admirable.
This was a decent album. I thought they would be like The Clash, and it turned out that way. Kind of elements of pop punk. Looks like they toured with Clash, too. Teenage Kicks stood out to me. I also liked True Confessions. This was pretty good, but not groundbreaking. 3 from me.
Teenage Kicks will forever be one of the greatest songs ever written Jimmy Jimmy and Here Comes The Summer are great singles too The rest is fun but not essential
This is some good rock and roll music. B-
Kept me entertained but there was nothing special here
Pretty fun and upbeat.
Nothing really new or interesting from these guys, but it's far from bad and it really feels like the album is speedrunning itself anyway with how quick the songs are. I admire it.
Not a big fan but some nice songs in here
Sympa mais pas particulièrement choqué
Chill
I’d never heard of this Irish punk band before but this is a great record
A fascinating first time listening to this album, I really enjoyed the energy and of course Teenage Kicks is classic. It would take far longer to rate this more highly, but it's a good 3, but amazes me how cool Fergal Sharkey comes across in this setting when he seems like the most square man now!
Pretty enjoyable punk record. Just the fact that it houses "Teenage Kicks" alone gives it an extra star. However, it continues to be an inconsistent album.
Sellasta brittiläistä perusmeininkiä ajalta jolloin teinitytöistä voitiin tehdä biisejä.
As much as this is just your average punk album, it's a format the never gets old. Lots of songs that are only around 2 minutes each that flow in and out of each other really well, and the whole time they are angry about something that isn't quite obvious, but they get passionate enough about it such that you feel like you can get angry about it with them.
My favorite British punk pop surf rockabilly shoegaze garage band, and there are many!
2.5
Generally enjoyable although it's an hour long and almost all the songs sound the same. I like Teenage Kicks but I don't like it 26 times in a row.
You have an easy coming style to them. They are easy to listen to, easy to understand. A punk vibe w a pop twist. Nice album
3.5, pretty good.
Fun punk with lots of hooks and a playful, carefree attitude. I like the bouncy bass lines throughout. “True Confessions” was a surprising twist — more of a new wave style. A few of these songs actually lean towards new wave in addition to having classic punk riffs.
It's pretty alright! But just alright.
A solid effort in punk rock like many we've gotten before, with a burst of poppy energy across 16 brief tracks. However, I am actually dropping half a point from this for the (admittedly petty) reason that this album, which has Casbah Rock on it, made it onto the 1001 Albums list, while Combat Rock by The Clash, which has Rock the Casbah on it, isn't! Who made THAT decision?? Still a 6/10 even with the point reduction, though, which means 3 stars either way on this site's scale.
Do you want 16 of the exact same song all packed into a short album? Then this is for you! (It was fine. Not a must-listen)
Kind of left no real impression on me. Not aggressive enough to be punk but not interestingly instrumented enough to capture my attention. Totally fine.
Jump Boys is good. Late 70s British punk mildly similar to Sex Pistols. 3/5
Muy entretenido y suena sorprendentemente moderno
Pretty basic punk/pop punk which isn't really my thing. Sounds like a poppier Ramones, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but much prefer pop punk circa the 90's or 2000's. Plus, I'm just not a huge fan of the poppier instrumentation while they still keep the more standard punk vocals. So yeah. Fine, just not really my thing.
Fun, similar to the Ramones, not the most unique thing but it sounds nice
Energetic, but a bit forgettable on the songs. 3/5
There wasn't anymore memorable about the album nor was it terrible. Another solid 3 from me.
16 tracks in under 35 minutes. What could be better?!?
Very classic sounding punk rock, need to do more research to know what else was out then. Bit surfery and overall fun if not a bit repetitive.
5.09
Forgot I saw these live until this listen
Bit of a standard punk album. The music is ok but I did not find it very special
Like this was good actually
Kinda liked this one.
I love the economy of punk music. 16 songs clocking in at 35 minutes. Get to the point! This album feels familiar though it’s my first introduction to The Undertones. That’s probably why this album gave me the epiphany that there isn’t anything new. Just rehashed and repackaged. Solid songwriting. I didn’t hate it but it didn’t make me jump out of chair either.
Sound like a lighter version of the Ramones. Okay, but not likely to listen again.
Better than their second album, for sure. Still, there's better pop punk.
Good stuff! Had a fun time with this one. Unfortunately, it reminded me of the fact that there is 100% a band I know that does a cover of Teenage Kicks and I cannot fucking find out who it is. I've been searching the internet for like an hour to no avail. What the fuck!
Only being familiar with the singles previously, this was good fun. True Confessions stood out as being my least favourite here, but overall a good listen. I was reminded just how good Teenage Kicks is. Enjoyed this!
I liked the guitars, mastering isn't the worst I've heard, however the songs themselves just aren't that interesting. The vocalist sounds like they are being strangled.
Some recognisable songs. It's a decent album but a lot of songs sound very similar
Solid
Ashamed to admit that I never listened to this album in full before yesterday, mostly due to the post-traumatic stress of having to play and sing Teenage Kicks at every family gathering from 1998-2007. I really enjoyed this album, lyrically it's a bit weak with the most predictable relentless rhyming couplets from start to finish. Music was great though
-took a few songs to really start enjoying this but i ended up liking it more than i thought i would -it’s sort of fun and accessible compared to most punk (??) or punk-adjacent albums. nothing revolutionary for the genre by any means but not bad enough to shit on in any capacity -Favorites: Wrong Way and Jump Boys
3.5 This is a punk album I sorta missed - I think if I had spent a lot more time with it, I would have gave it a 4 or even 5 but as a missed classic I'm not going back to this so I'll go 3. Wish there was a 3.5
Default music. Fine.
Feargal Sharkey has been around my area quite a lot. Complaining about the amount of sewage being deposited into the River Wharfe and the adverse effect this has on cold water swimmers and more importantly in my view, the trout. So he’s come a long way since this album was released. It’s another one that I had on CD but stupidly sold it cheap when I thought I was going hook, line and sinker (gedit?) towards streaming. What I never realised was that their biggest hit Teenage Kicks was an addition to the rerelease so I suppose it depends which version we are reviewing and how many stars it gets. Teenage Kicks is a blast and raises the star count on its own. With that addition and Get Over You this album becomes a bit of a greatest hits. A good album of its time but not one nowadays that I will reach for. That is apart from Teenage Kicks which is a song you never tire of. 2/5 without Teenage Kicks 3/5 with Teenage Kicks so let’s assume I’m reviewing the rerelease. 26/9/25
More british pop punk... Sounds like the last 3 we've had. Nothing bad here though and some nice riffs.
Pretty good
I really like punk, I mean, I really really like punk, and I did enjoy this album, it reminded me of the Damned, The Buzzcocks, Sham 69, or the UK Subs, but unfortunately, the latter is not on the list. It actually sounds like a lot of how late seventies punk bands of the UK sounded. Which makes me dare to question, why this album is on the list? Not bad, nothing special either. 3/5
A fun, but fairly unremarkable listen.
Cool Brit punk sound - hearing some Beach Boys and Ramones influences. Short tracks. Favorite songs: Here Comes the Summer Teenage Kicks Get Over You
fun enough and utterly unremarkable
Meh
Fun but nothing special, would listen in the background happily
okay, first five tracks had me ready to GIVE UP... mindless "PuNk" music... but something magical happened when i got to "teenage kicks". it actually had musicality, there were harmonies, the instruments had purpose, and it even had nods to 50s/60s do-wop kind of music, which i thought was really fun! the rest of the album was so much better - it's almost like they made a great album but at the last minute were told it needed to be "more PuNk" by the label so they churned out some drivelous punk tracks and slapped them on the front end. i actually "liked" several tracks from the second half of the album on my spotify and look forward to them cycling into my mixes! i would play this album when a group of teenagers is going out for a night on the town. for the most part they're a good group of kids, but one or two of them are into the darker scene, maybe looking to stir up some trouble later in the evening (get in a FIGHT?! buy DRUGS?! SHOPLIFT??!)... but for now they're heading out into the city with their fake id's to have a good time and let off some steam!
Two punk albums back to back? Album generator you rascal! I thought it was decent. The carnival organ, and the lyrics about unrequited love were a interesting change of pace for the genre. I'm not sure I would listen to this album again, but there were moments when I would tap my toe, or be sent to times when I had a giant crush on someone. It does say something when Spotify started doing smart shuffle after the album was finished and I had no idea it was another artist. I listened to like 3 songs not by the undertones before I realized my mistake
estuvo bueno, cortito y conciso
