Reviews (page 5 of 8)

Gotta admit, I'm kind of tired of Teenage Kicks these days. As it turns out, I've never heard any other song of theirs before. None of these are as good as Teenage Kicks, but they are fresher to my ears, at least. I wouldn't take them over the Buzzcocks or Ramones, but might take them over Stiff Little Fingers.

Fine but forgettable

sai cansado nesse, mas não é ruim

pop punk setentista!! diversão purinha. 16 músicas em 30 minutos, é disso que nois gosta! bacana!!

Catchy songs with a slight edge.

Starts off strong, gets a bit sandy after a while. You’ve got my number, wrong way , Keep it in the family and TK are my highlights on this one. Well mixed.

It's 70s punk, so it's annoying, but it is more musical than you normally get with that genre. It has the decency of being only 34 minutes, which saves it a star because I was definitely starting to get annoyed with it. As it is, I'll give it 3 stars for not being Sex Pistols lite.

Some great tunes, and as often: When they left the basic punk formula behind to do something more with it, it was even great!

Was pretty good but not as iconic (for me) as something like the Ramones. Different styles I know but can’t give everyone high marks

No longer available on streaming

Nydelig kos pønk! Veldig lang plate, men mye gromlåter.

Pretty standard classic rock, but there's some punk influence there too; you can tell this band is forming simultaneously as the Clash. They're not quite as raw and definitely tend towards pop rock, but that punk is still in the background for sure. It could definitely be more original, though. It's like the Beatles/Stones with an edge.

Short, sweet, and catchy. If you want to do e into the England punk scene I guess this could be included. There ain't much to say I guess lmao....

I take back what I said in the last review: if forgot the Stooges. Bar the Stooges though, again British punk is just better than American punk. While I don't adore this album it has far more going for it than the Ramones or the Dictators. Sharkey's voice is a whole lot more interesting and has a range and the instrumentation (not just guitars!) also adds to it. And it has actual hits.

male model almost sounded like the blitzkrieg bop

Early pop punk? Perfectly fine but very samey throughout, songs are 3 minutes or less so easy to breeze through.

rock and roll good mood

This is fine for punk. It just hasn't aged well. I don't know off hand if it was revolutionary at the time. But it just sounds like everything else.

Great weren't they, I loved them. A brilliant singles band, perfect punk/pop. Apart from those singles and Family Entertainment which I knew from a Best Of tape nothing really stands out. But they were great, and although I never saw them live at least I saw That Petrol Emotion and they were fantastic :)

Fun album, sounds ahead of its time, a lot like some indie rock albums twenty years later. Was a bit like The Strokes at the start. The singer’s voice has always annoyed me though!

Love the accent coming through. Very fun album. Love the oddness of the riff in True Confessions - Keyboard Version in contrast to the rest of the album. Great riff in I Know A Girl too. Mars Bars is so funny - love the plate shattering sound.

Reminds me of The Ramones, which makes sense, it's the same era (1979). It's a fun enough album, but it doesn't have the same level of catchy hooks as the Ramones.

Teenage Licks is another one of those songs I've heard a million times (probably on Kexp), but never knew who sang it. The rest of the album is solid punk/rockabilly without being exceptional.

Good old fashioned classic 1970s British punk rock. Good enough for me

It bops but I do feel like I'd rather be listening to the Jam

6/10 Punk isn’t my thing, but this was at the upper end for me. Did its thing efficiently and melodically. 16 songs in 25 minutes is real getting it done stuff. Best: Teenage Kicks

Lol, JUST had an Undertones album the day before yesterday. I guess I can’t say I was underwhelmed this time because I had an idea of what to expect. To use a cliche, I was whelmed. Well, that said - maybe from going in with expectations - I thought this album was better than “Hypnotised.” Maybe a little more genuine, like it wasn’t trying too hard, and it didn’t get as close to the edge of being irritating. Overall, a fun, if forgettable, pop-punk album.

Tight adolescent-themed rock band!

not bad but probably won’t ever revisit

I'd never heard of these guys. This was a fun album, typical teenage boy/young male adult material.....it's been awhile, but I can still relate. A gentler punk style than some of the other bands of this era.

The Undertones took a queue from the Ramones and cleaned it up a bit. A lot of the same sound but right off the bat I was in so the whole album was a good, quick rock-punk romp. "Jump Boys" and "True Confessions" stood out as top tracks with the later straying from the standard formula. Not sure why they threw on what sounded like an early, gravelly demo version of "Casbah Rock" at the end but whatever...it was only a minute long. 2.58 stars.

Pop-ish punk for the time had a snappy beat to many songs, but nothing really stuck on me. Not bad though.

Pretty good, paints a vivid picture of the times effectively, groovy.

Somehow enjoyable and forgettable at the same time.

Like so many other early eighties punk influenced bands both musically and lyrically.

Too easy-listening and compressed 80s production.

Dead Kennedys meet The Beach Boys?

Some good stuff here. But I can’t figure out if it feels too slight or too rushed, however I ended up zoning out by the halfway point. 3/5

Fairly innocuous pop fare. Nothing stood out as great or especially bad.

for most of it i thought it was a fairly standard brit/punk type deal which is not really my thing. it did get kind of funky and more new-wave-y near the end though which i warmed up to

Solid late 70s punk/rock album. However, compared to their contemporaries like The Police and the Clash, nothing really stands out.

Ei ehkä mahtavan mielenkiintoinen, mutta pitää kyllä loppuun asti otteessaan! Hieman tanssittavakin. Ei kuitenkaan villi.

Loistava soundi (putket kuumana). Ihan ok biisit (plus yksi lähes ansaittu klassikko). Kuuntelin kaksi kertaa putkeen. Matala 3, koska luotan heihin.

Good songwriting. Sounds similar to the Ramones.

It was alright.

These boys bring the juice… right out of the shoot it was game on..

Classic brit-punk sound, but Irish. Don't hate it, clearly influenced by the Clash and the like. Good but not amazing really. Singer vibrato irks me a little.

Decent classic punk. Songs about girls, relationships, girls, job, girls.

This is kinda what I imagine the Archies sound like

Fun and fast punk.

They were called the Irish Ramones by some, and they sound like it. The lead vocals are great as well. If I’m being picky, by 1979 other punk bands were doing more in the space (and this is harsh because they were so young on release). I am giving this a strong 3. Because even though I consistently enjoyed throughout, there aren’t enough memorable tracks to keep you coming back.

It's worth checking out the video for Teenage Kicks. Puts the record into context when you see how young they were. Northern Ireland's answer to the Ramones. Would love to rate higher but quality veres from the sublime to the ridiculous.

To my ears the Undertones are on the more sugary, poppier end of pop punk than Ramones - perhaps being a better indication of the future direction of the genre. It has an adolescent charm, like time travelling back in time to a school disco. It would be difficult for me to totally get what it would have sounded like as a teenager in 1970s Northern Ireland. There are some nostalgic qualities that almost sound like their harking back to traditional rocknroll. Teenage Kicks is the clear stand out track, but I was also quite struck by the quite strange True Confessions which sounds like a Joy Division bassline with Gary Newman meets XTC vocals. The 48 second closer Casbah Rock mission statement “you won't get pop at the casbah rock” is a genuine headscratcher that's a silly way to finish the record. Others passed me by leaving a smile on my face but without much incident.

Fun! I had never heard this band before. Nothing particularly revolutionary but certainly not something I disliked.

Mixed feelings here.

The album has a cool 70s punk sound, similar in parts to The Clash or even some Sex pistols in the riffs. The rhythms and overall sound are very upbeat and all the songs are quite fast and short, averaging at about two minutes each. They also have simple, easy lyrics and simple vocal lines as well as groovy drum fills and catchy riffs, which makes it fun to listen to and sing along, maybe even dance a little. There is a little variation in the details, sometimes the guitar fills have more of a vintage rock’n’roll feel instead of the classic punk sound, the vocals vary somewhat between punk, rock and more mainstream calm feels. However, after a while it does get a little repetitive and even though the album is only 34 minutes long already, perhaps it could have been split into two shorter EPs to avoid some of the more outstanding songs, like the iconic “Teenage Kicks”, being lost in the mix. The alternative would’ve been to add a little variation, even though the sound is cool overall and some might prefer it this way, the band does show the ability to add a complete break in the sound with the outro song and this is missed on the rest of the album.

Good stuff, reminded me a little bit of an artist I got a little while back on here, that artist would be the buzzcocks. The sound is similar though I will say I enjoy buzzcocks more, this album is still perfectly enjoyable. The songs are easy to follow and have that energy and carefree style you recognize from any other punk album like this, this is to me a good thing because you can just put this album on and chill out to it. The guitar work is pretty run of the mill in my opinion, nothing super special but fine nonetheless. In my opinion this album doesn’t offer much you wouldn’t get from any other album like this but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth a listen because it’s still a fun album. Favorite Tracks: Teenage Kicks, (She’s a) Runaround, and True Confessions.

It is fast paced, it’s uplifting, and the simple lyrics about girls and doing hood rat shit with your friends is enough to set the mood. Honestly though, Undertones debut album is largely forgettable.

its serviceable british punk rock thats more listenable than most, kinda gives Ramones vibes. I feel like if there was less of the genre on the list, then this would stand out a little more.

Slightly better than the other albums that sound like this one. Still won’t be returning to it

These guys seem like they were ahead of their time. But, sadly, they’re behind my time.

Not bad!

British punk rock

Early British punk

This is clearly a precursor for some of the more modern bands i like. Pretty cool. A side was much better than B tho

Pretty cool, but kinda dated

Simpatico, ma niente di che

Fun listen, pop-punk really, suffers from being a little repetitive, Teenage Kicks the standout, which is truly a great song. Sharkey's vocals are the star of the show, band is great but his vocals are another level.

Decent.

Great proto-pop-punk sound. Can definitely hear echoes across all kinds of bands: the Hives, Futureheads, and so on. Alas, the catch with The Undertones is they are deliberately singing about teenage concerns, half throwback to 1950s/early 60s bubblegum rock and doo wop, half Ramones impersonation. Which partly makes sense, they were 18 and 19 year-olds - which is pretty dope considering the guitar sound, rhythm bed playing, and vocals. But, even at the height of my own teenage punk phase I’d’ve been like guys, let’s grow up a bit eh?

Wrong Way

Like a precursor to The Ramones maybe? Who are also not great.

Irish pop punk, enjoyed it 3.5

Very indicative of late 70s/early 80s punk(especially BritPunk). Much like the Buzzcocks. Energetic and bouncy fun.

Pretty standard classic punk.

This is the kind of pop punk soft new wave that defined my musical listenings of the 80s. Easy to get through, not bad, but also not terribly memorable. Solid 3.

I enjoyed most of this but became very repetitive. Multiple less good versions of teenage kicks became slightly tiresome

The name of the band sounds familiar to me. I don't know if I've heard any of their music before. You can still hear the punk. The album was fun, even if the music sounded a bit thin. 3/5

I don't know what so different about this punk album but it was feeling particularly bland today.

I like this style of music but this specific album felt forgettable

Thought this was a pretty cool punk album. Fast paced, fun to listen to.

This album is so bipolar, it's got some really solid songs followed by complete trash...I think the good outweighs the bad but the bad is bad enough that I can't really give it more than a 3

- kurze und knackige Platte (was auch auf jeden Song zutrifft) - insgesamt unterhaltend und launig - werde ich sicherlich mal wieder hören

An energetic slice of life, hitting right at the youthful disaffection and nocturnal ambitions which bubbled along under the surface of The Troubles. Never quite had the fury of Stiff Little Fingers, but it definitely feels they were heading out in a poppier direction - there's a direct link from here to Dookie! Favourite tracks: Male Model, Teenage Kicks (of course), Get Over You, True Confessions

It's so funny how 45 years of retrospect makes this kind of punk sound so essentially like 50s rock-n-roll just a notch faster and slightly more distorted, but the chord progressions and harmonies and hooks are basically the same. It works, though, hey, it's a good formula for having a bopping good time with your (leather jacket wearing and safety pin pierced) best girl!

A fun, short album with some good energy and catchy hooks.

I can see the appeal

First time hearing the original Teenage Kicks instead of Kodalines version I'm so tired and depressed but descent album

Not bad, not great. 2.5/5

Punk at its finest however it was over long and got a bit samey at times.

Fun little punk rock album. Songs were quick, album was an easy listen. Grab a beer, and put this one on at a house party for a good time.

Rating: 3.5/5 | Favorite Track: Family Entertainment --- The Undertones are a fantastic classic punk band, but I prefer their singles like "Teenage Kicks" and "You've Got My Number (Why Don't You Use It!)". The first side of this album is really fun pop punk, but the second side really starts to drag. I want this to be a 4/5 album, but it doesn't quite make it.

This was okay. It was kinda like punk-lite.

Fun music

It was good, but not great - some feel good classic punk rock but nothing else above that

Don’t take this the Wrong Way, but this felt like some so so Family Entertainment. I hear some Girls Don’t Like It.

Pretty middle of the road music that, by today's standards, feels like its suffering to real lack of imagination and technical prowess. As someone who's gone through over 800 albums on this list I am now confident that this is just the way punk be.

Really fun. Captures a real teenage angsty feel.

Some fun punk

First time hearing these guys and they do a good job of what they're going for. The number of tracks vs total album length is hilarious. I enjoyed hearing it and can tell why people would be fans but I doubt I'd come back often. I could see this being influential to future artists. Strong 3.

This feels like punk that's safe enough for middle class white guys to like, edgy for the seventies but not offensive - "I'm so different!" You say, listening to this in the stereo in the car you bought with dad's money

I’ve heard plenty of Undertones over the years but not heard their debut until now. Liked this one though — The Undertones sit in a really warm and comforting place for me and I can’t help but have a good time listening to them. Not mind-blowing, but enjoyable.

There are a few riffs that feel similar to other songs that (I’m fairly sure) came after this, so I can see how it could have had some influence. However, all in all it just doesn’t come acato me as a really strong album. After a while they pretty much start to sound like the same couple songs. I’ve also never been a fan of making the chorus just singing the title of the song eight times. That happens way too often here. It’s not an awful album - I wasn’t angry about listening to the whole thing - but I can’t see ever listening to it again.

Sounds a little like a lot of things but not enough of any one thing to make you want to listen again.

I’ve had a run of mostly shit albums for a while now, so maybe grain of salt, but I was pleasantly surprised by this. They’re like a Northern Irish Buzzcocks. Fun, unpretentious (post-) punk.

Decent rock! Reminded me Of Green Day

Teenage kicks is an amazing tune. The rest of the album is fine but unspectacular. High 3

Upbeat rhythms and a spunky sound, but lyrically it’s not that interesting. These bad boys might steal your daughter, but at least they’ll remove their flat caps when entering the house.

Fun album for the punk/rock genre but no particularly memorable tunes for me

The songs were short at least and sometimes catchy

Enjoyable, but nothing memorable.

2.7 2x short but decent catch up 3/13

One special song, many pretty good songs

favorite song: I know a girl. Overall score: 6.0/10

They have a certain sound to them, kinda surf vibes a bit. I like the guitar throughout the album.

Oh look, two days in a row of late 70s punk bands I’ve never heard of. Think that makes 10-12 so far. This one isn’t terrible.

I just really don’t enjoy this style of singing! It’s a shame, because otherwise I really like it. Teenage Kicks is amazing and I can’t believe I’d never heard it before.

Short and sweet little album.

This is bang average.

This is a good punk album, but it's a little repetitive. "Teenage Kicks" is a classic, it's always enjoyable. Nothing else stands out much. "Casbah Rocks" is raw and fun though.

Good tunes but just not my cup of tea unfortunately. Great to try it though, thx!

A really fun, manic and compact album given the number of songs on offer. All tracks offer something new and interesting, while never overstaying their welcome, rarely past the 3 minute mark. Best Tracks: - Teenage Kicks - Wrong Way - I Know A Girl Worst Tracks: N/A Rating: 7.5/10

Fun and easy to shake your head along to, but not especially memorable. There are so so many albums like this on the list!!!

Also das war schon was. Blieb irgendwie hängen.

I thought there wasn't a lot of variation in the music across the album but the actual lyrics were fairly good. I like Feargal Sharkey's voice, and overall I rate the album as quite good

Teenage Kicks is my most favorite track on this album. It has all the wavering-voice horny angst of a teenager. The rest of the tracks are all right-sort of Ramones/ punk sound-fine for a background listen.

3.1 Second one by these. Again, some good stuff but definitely drags as it goes on, with the wobbly voice getting old by the end. Teenage Kicks is a belter though.

Fun quick listen

barnslegt pönk sækir sjálfsagt talsvert í eldri form bílskúrsrokksins. fín lög inn á milli. set 3,5 á þetta.

First? 3,5/5 Again? 2,5/5

I only knew Teenage Kicks, and liked it. The rest of the album is more of the same, but usually not quite as catchy. Well sung and played but a bit plain for punk, for me.

The Undertones sound like they existed on the cusps of classic punk rock and early New Wave. At times it sounds more like The Ramones and at others, it almost resembles early Talking Heads. The songs are very short, doing what they need to do and then ending as quick as possible. That could sound exciting, energetic, or frustrating. In this album it's a bit of all three. The Undertones seem to have paved the way for some of the pop punk bands that would take a similar approach in the early 2000s. It's an ok album with a few stand out tracks. But ultimately, for punk, post-punk or new wave, there are better options out there.

This was pretty good. I think almost Clash level stuff. Strong 3

Feel good summer time punk. The singer reminds me of Dead Kennedys Favourite Song: Male Model

Bright boyish punk rock, full of loud hooks they keep hammering on you. Not my favorite, but pretty fun. Best song: (She’s a) Runaround

The Undertones is solid and fun, has a couple of iconic tracks, the rest of it has a high floor low ceiling vibe, listenable and enjoyable but not something that stands the test of time aside from Teenage Kicks (not originally on this I believe) and Here Comes The Summer. Still, a 3, better than many recent efforts.

This was decent - wants to have a similar vibe to the Stooges album, but really it's a bit more cuddly and poppy, with the singles being a lot close to pop than punk really. Nothing super memorable (other than Teenage Kicks that has really stood the test of time), I think it's a straight down the line 3 for this one.

Punk opened the doors and the Undertones crashed in. I think I recognized that wall and half the people sitting on it. And half the riffs and half the attitude, but the other half of everything is totally original and mad. The simple algorithm is perfect.

not a punk guy but this had its charm

Not bad but not good. I found it fairly forgettable, but I did hear many other bands in this. An influence for things I do care about, and that isn’t nothing!

While this was a fun punk album and slightly ahead of its time, I found it a little repetitive. Still a fun quick listen for a Friday morning, and I enjoy any album in this project that introduces me to a new punk band. Notable Tracks: - Family Entertainment - Here Comes the Summer 5/10

ok - but not more

Teenage Kicks Here Comes the Summer Get Over You Jimmy Jimmy True Confessions

Definitely paved the way for many modern bands today, some absolute classics in this album. Pretty solid

Teenage kicks is one of the best songs of the 20th century the rest of the album was pretty meh.

Good Punk Album. Songs were too short it feels like this stupid tiktok music era with songs sitting at maximum 2 minutes. This triggers me a lot when every song feels like an fking interlude... But the songs themselves were pretty solid but mostly forgettable

The Undertones! The band that wished they were Houmous & Chuntey. Almost as fun but nowhere near as funky. 3.4

First album I've been given that I've already completed, and I love it, actually got me into the Buzzcocks more than themselves

Pretty rockin

I think this might the punk album I like the most so far.

Liked it a lot more than anticipated. Good song writing

Nothing stood out but sounded fun. Reminded me of the Ramones

A little tame at times but mostly good punk from a band I've never heard before.

Just a high quality succinct and to the point early pop punk record. Catchy and a lot of fun.

The guitar was cool in some spots, but generally a generic British punk record.

Nothing says punk more than a turtle neck and puffy jacket

Two undertones records?! This is the only one that should be on the list.

British Ramones. I liked a handful Rating: 3.3

Literally just a carbon copy of Never Mind the Bollocks. Same exact sound but without the edge. In a world where that album doesn’t exist, this ranks higher. As it is, though, this just shows zero originality.

I like other bands in this genre more, but this was solid. Also, I get anxious when I see 16 songs on an album. So that played in a bit here, too.

nice but really fucking long. i like it though. but listening to a punk album that long, i tend to get lost in the songs

Love hearing NI chime in with their interpretation of (at the time) Pop Music. The Undertones have two albums on this list and at first I was thinking they couldn't possibly have a need to be so overrepresented here but after a listen to this, their first album I am corrected. Very different and a wide variety of Pop, Post Punk and New Wave make a cosmic sound for this disc. 3/5

This is punk I can get behind, unlike most other I’ve heard. Catchy, poppy vibes going on here. Teenage Kicks and Family Entertainment were my faves.

Definitely enjoyed this!

Nothing bad, but also nothing incredible either. Just a solid punk album.

Alright

hmmmm. thought this was fine

This is nothing special to me, happy little songs that all sound a bit the same. Their only advantage is that they are short.

I love punk. This is a very solid record. The issue is i don't think it really rises to a level that necessitates. A score above 3. It probably influenced lots of bands, but taken on its own, I'll say 3.

I was a social distortion fan in the day and this has that same feel. This type of music was very popular back in the late 70’s and 80’s. This spawned all the Green Day’s and alternative rock of the 90’s. This isn’t easy listening, but it really is very good. This is what you like to hear at a bar from a live band.

Another unknown to me. I dig the energy. I heard some Buzzcocks influence, which is always good.

Fun upbeat early pop punk. Nothing special IMO but I guess that’s what hindsight does. The opening track is quite literally “we have the clash at home” vibes. Also seems like they took a page out of today’s streaming world with the super short songs but fill up the track list. I’d definitely revisit this one. It’s repetitive but fun, and thankfully since it’s so short the repetitiveness really doesn’t matter.

Competent but not memorable 3.2

Eh this one was ok.

This list is so random. That was fun! I loved how short it was. Honestly might come back to this in some moods. Short, aggressive, fun, feel like I'm there. 3/5

It’s been nearly 3 years since I listened to The Undertones’ sophomore effort but I remember feeling almost exactly the same about that album as I feel about this. That is to say: generally likeable with its peppy, poppy take on punk and youthful humour, but I never found myself thinking ‘wow, what a great song!’ (although this one does at least have Teenage Kicks on it) So while I’m really not sure that *both* albums qualify as ‘must-hears’, either one of them in isolation would be a worthwhile inclusion, as each seems to be a decent representation of what The Undertones contributed to music.

5.5/10 The frontman's voice is pleasant, but there's nothing special or catchy in these songs. 🤷🏼‍♀️

not bad but not for me 3

I feel like I'm supposed to like this, because, hell, John Peel loved "Teenage Kicks" to his dying day (and beyond)... and I do like that one song a lot, but the rest doesn't hit the same highs.

An influential band with some great power pop punk songs.

Typical punk lad rock. Not bad, but doesn't jump out at me. 3/5

It completely lacks the interesting variation present on the follow-up album, leading to a pretty generic pop punk album that struggles to separate one song from another during its short run time. What helps its case is the fact that the formula is strong enough to make it almost hit for most of the album, but it rarely if ever hits its mark, and so it's just mediocre instrumentals with lyrics that admittedly are weird enough at times to grab your attention, but, still, it could be doing a LOT more.

Okaish Pop Punk. No need to relisten.

Got some good songs on it for sure, I really like true confessions. I think it's The Understones best song, was a shame for it to not have the guitar version on it. The One spotify linked to had "Teenage Kicks" on it also, which I don't actually think was on the original version of the album.

Not as good as their other album and a lot of these songs sound identical, still decent

Fun…..zu lang…songfragmente….mars bar??!

Sweet, sweet, pop punk.

Super fun pop punk. 3.5.

Pretty good, but Hypnotised is better and also on this list, so I think just that one would be better.

Punkier than I'd imagined! Quite enjoyed it

Above average post-punk. It's pretty poppy actually.

At first I liked it, but got tired of it midway through. Still decent.

Instead of making overtly political punk, they wrote about chocolate, girls, and boredom. It sounds like five kids in a room just trying to get the songs down before their ride home shows up.

My favorite candy growing up was Coffee Crisp. Its slogan was, "a nice light snack". Being that this was a Canadian treat, the slogan was also translated into French: "Un goûter léger". I think that suns up The Undertones: "Un goûter léger".

Punky. Poppy. British. Nothing else really outstanding about this very mid album. At least it doesn't wear out its stay. 3/5

Very good for what it is. A respected guitar oriented punk band, and it’s legit stuff, I just don’t hear the melodies or the color in the music to encourage repeated listening for me…

This was fairly enjoyable early brit-rock-pop. Sounds similar to a lot of other things I've heard through this experiment but was a solid outing.

Poppy, lively, energetic. Hints of punk throughout with a fast-paced vibe. Pretty decent record.

This album was nice, clean cut and short. It just felt like a nice almost introduction to rock music as nothing too much or too little. I respect it however I don’t see a huge importance to it in my opinion.

More Feargal Sharkey! Much like their 2nd album, but I think I like this a little more. Immediately accessible with a nice gentle touch of that late 70s not-too-scary UK punk. Short (16 songs, 35 minutes) major-melody aggressive tunes with vocals that are almost annoying but not quite - perfectly appropriate. Never a favourite but it's fun rock. 6/10 3 stars.

Didn’t we do this? Feargal Sharkey is a fine singer and they are fine instrumentalists. But one album is enough.

They were big in Derry. I wonder npow if they are on the Derry Girls soundtrack at all.... Says the wikipedia page. The shivering voice of Feargal Sharkey cofnuse me, as it reminds me of DK. So there is punk and other styles happening. Its entertaining and confusing the familair sounds - and there is a moment where I think its a Tone Loc song, buts its just "teenage Kicks'. pleasant enough early English rock, and a history lesson. is it big and inluentialand special enough for a top 1000? who knows. My guess is its a lukewarm one

Like I said last time their name came up, I was never a fan, but that was mainly because of Sharkey’s voice. Musically, this is quite interesting. Hardly surprising they reissued it within 6 months of its original release date so they could includeTeenage Kicks - their first single(1978) & best-known song - on it. Better thannI expected.

Teenage Kicks is, of course, a classic. We enjoyed this album but it wasn't a standout one.

Short but sweet. I liked the raw yet polished sound.

I enjoyed this but didn’t love it.

3.5. Good stuff but I'd rather listen to the clash or the ramones

mehr gefälliger rock aus grossbritannien. und feargal sharkey - die stimme kam mir bekannt vor. guter beat, nette gitarren - mehr nicht.

Nice fun punky sound.

good punk rock record, short and sweet tracks, pretty short album overall but was decent

Starts out as a fun and the the starts to get old. Lots of tracks but all similar sound.

Never heard of this band. So far so good. Fun album. Will I remember it probably not.

had a few really good songs but apart from that i wasn't a fan of the vocals as it felt like borderline shouting at times.

#225. It was OK. I tried to get into it, there just wasn't a whole lot there. It reminds me of like PG-13 Dead Kennedys or something. Maybe that's not the best description, UT it'd the first one that came to mind. 3/5: tolerable

Highlights: Teenage Kicks, Here Comes The Summer

6.5/10

Not bad

The lyrics on this feel quite juvenile, and looking at the cover art I don't imagine the members are much older than high school age. Not everyone can make good lyrics, but they did have good instrumentals at least.

I don't know how many of these punk/post-punk UK bands we're going to get on this list, but it's getting hard to keep trying to differentiate them.

Irish punk music that delivers quick and punchy tunes

short and had energy the whole time, it was ok

Particularly like (She’s A) Runaround

I kinda liked it. Something like the Ramones meet the Kinks, both bands I liked, but came across as sort of dated. Maybe it's like those movies that break some new ground but seem derivative if you've seen a bunch of movies afterwards that steal all the best bets. Still interesting for historical context for me.

Good music!

This is great punk/grunge. Sounds good and messy. "Teenage Kicks" is fun. I think "Jump Boys" to "Get Over You" is a low point in the album and could have been left off. Now that I've continued listening, the quality really dips after "Wrong Way." Or I just got tired of the sound. Either way, this album didn't need to be 26 songs long.

Je pense que j'ai mieux aimé que Hypnothised, mais ça reste que ce n'est pas le punk le plus impressionnant ou qui brise les barrières. De bien meilleurs albums sont sur cette liste. 7/10

Es buen punk, tiene teenage kicks which is an amazing track. Pero siento que fue bastante repetitivo. 6/10.

It’s a pretty good 3, but it’s just sort of… safe. It’s hard for me to find the specific words I want to say, because I do think this album has some pretty energetic tracks throughout, but none of them are necessarily that memorable. It’s not an Apocalypse Dudes situation where I felt like every song just sort of blended together, but it is a point where the quantity of the album creates diminishing returns on the quality of the album – at some point, the soundscape loses its luster, and even with the 16 tracks here all being relatively short, some of them do feel unnecessary, even with some decent variety within. It’s a good listen, and I’m sure it’ll resonate better and perhaps more deeply with someone else, but for my money’s worth, this is an album that you take all the songs in, throw on a playlist, and then just go “oh, this sounds cool” when it comes up on shuffle, and never think about it again afterward. Hence, the 3, but it could go up to a 4 later. The guitar work was absolutely stellar though.

These guys were much ahead of their time, now, I'm sure. I'm not sure how much I like it since it still sounds generic to my ears.

Just OK

A bit too basic. Teenage Kick is amazing. The guitars sound like That Petrol Emotion

liked the rock/punk rock vibe of the music. solid beats.

The Undertones is the debut album by the Irish rock band The Undertones. This punk rock album brought a fresh sound to the genre and was critically acclaimed as a result. The young band may have produced a run-of-the-mill rock album, but it has soul. I enjoyed the vibe on this album, with "Teenage Kicks," "Here Comes The Summer," & "Jimmy Jimmy" being the standout tracks. If you're a fan of punk rock, then you should like this album.

Interesting, kind of early punk album. I enjoyed it, partially cause how short it was, but overall it was good. 3/5 Might listen again

Not bad at all -- nice poppy little tunes.

While this half hour of family entertainment did make me get my teenage kicks, much like a summer mid budget action flick, it came and went without much though afterwards.

Competently crafted punk rock that's most definitely a tier or two below the more household names of the genre.

Poppy and punk mixed together. Energetic and a bit fun.

Really good. Sounds like the Clash meets the Ramones. A strong 3

Some OK UK punk. Other bands did it better and are more recognizable because of it. Some good tracks on here tho, good listen overall.

Enjoyed this! I know the song Teenage Kicks, which is great. The rest of the album sounds similar.

pretty solid. could i write poetry to this? y

A fine album. Really enjoyed where Spotify took me after this album was done.

High tempo, good time rocking. A lot for next generations to draw from.

Not grating by English punk standards but also not amazing by those standards either. Pretty average and only thing I’ll remember is that one of the songs was sampled in a one direction cover of one way or another by blondie.

Punk, aber eher Rock. Kann man sich anhören, ist mir aber von Rhythmus her zu hektisch.

They remind me of The Clash and Dead Kennedys, some songs are alright but I'm not the biggest fan of their overall sound, 5/10

A fun album. Listened to the version with the big singles on it, but the whole album was decent. Will listen to it again for sure.

Completely fine pop punk. I like the lead singer's vibrato.

Fun! 3.5

A fairly good album, it has the classic song Teenage Kicks Wich I really enjoyed. I also liked Family Entertainment, Jimmy Jimmy and (She's A) Runaround.

Reminded me of The Clash and the Sex Pistols Cars, Ramones and Romantics. Band is from Ireland.

Catchy pop punk rhythms. Great sounding guitar work, they were certainly not sloppy with their time like a lot of bands in this genre can be. Interesting layered vocals with a weird tremolo/vibrato at times. Too many songs that just fade out because they reach a state of endless repetition, but not all of them. Anyway, the music is fun, and wouldn't be out of place in a Tony Hawk game.

Rating: 6.5/10 Good album overall. The first half is great, very catchy with plenty of fun guitar riffs and melodies. After a certain point the charm of this album starts to wear off, the second half is decent but the ideas start getting repetitive and some of the songs start feeling redundant despite the album's short length. Favorite songs: the first eight songs. Worst songs: Get Over You, (She's A) Runaround.

It never really deviates from it's one dimensional path

The Undertones self titled debut is shocking for a band coming from Derry, Northern Ireland in 1978. It’s so bright, the first comparison it brings to mind for me is The Beach Boys. But they are not The Beach Boys, they play hard and fast. Everything is very tight and simple, teenagers playing for teenagers. 7.4/10

2.5 - I like the singer's voice, but it suffers from the same problems as most of the punk albums I listen to do. The ending was nice, and the bonus songs were better, but I'm going off of the initial release's track listing, so. Better than some punk I listen to, but this album doesn't stand out too much.

Bravi ma non memorabili

I was not familiar with this at all before hearing it. It's punk, in the direction of The Clash, but it almost reminds me of the Strokes. It's fine, nothing objectionable, but nothing really stuck out about it on first listen.

Fell asleep

Absolute gem of a power pop record. No duds noted as it stays fresh while breezing through 16 tracks in 35 minutes. Though it’s more of a casual surprise than memorable spin. It is definitely a background record, good for the road, doing chores around the house or a quick work out.

Good enough.

For most of the album this was looking like a mediocre off-brand Clash knock-off, but it was actually the bonus tracks that got my ears to finally perk up, in particular Mars Bars was a great song. 3 male models out of 5 🏋️🏋️🏋️

Fun, punchy and fast moving English punk with bit of a pop sensibility. Lyrics aren't particularly deep, but they're about what you would expect from this kind of band. "Teenage Kicks" is a classic of the genre. Fave Songs: Teenage Kicks, Here Comes The Summer, Get Over You, True Confessions, Listening In

Teenage Kicks aside, wouldn't find myself listening to this much.

Solid powerpop punk album

The Undertones - The Undertones 6/10 - 3/5 Pretty repetitive. Many songs blur together, even though they're decent. Seems like The Ramones but not as good.

A few bangers and not overly long but felt a little 1 paced at times

Not sure if the other songs are all measurably worse than Teenage Kicks, and it's just because I've been exposed to that one so much that I think it's a banger. Probably a 3.5

What a badass album!

The list gave me two really good punk records in a row, but I feel that this record didn't live up to my newfound expectations of punk. It's a little boring, and a little all over the place. Not bad by any means, but it could be a whole lot better.

Очень неплохо

Demasiado previsor. Poco innovador. Rock con estilo y escuchable, pero sin más. Válido para cualquier momento

just fine. similar tone throughout entire album. its lively and kind of a product of the time.

This is how I imagined rock and roll to sound when I was younger. Wouldn't listen to it again on purpose, but liked it more than David Bowie.

# 135 : Who, What... Early British punk that rocked on. Had a bad day? Play the Undertones and kick something. Short songs with a fast tempo mean It's all over before its begun, but there is so much here. Favourite Track : True Confessions

There was a tempo-driven energy that lessened the barrier of entry made it easy for me to casually enjoy the experience and disregard the lyrical content or any feeling of repetitiveness. I found the accent on the vocals refreshing compared to the overabundance of British-based banks. This and The Clash have helped me realize I can like punk rock and tend to be drawn to it over more heavy/hard/grungy rock. It felt long for 35 minutes but was nice to have on while not having to give it my full attention. 6/10

Du bon punk un peu trop flat à mon goût, il manque de piquant

I'm not a big punk fan but I liked this quite a bit. There's something very relatable throughout all these songs, on top of the authenticity, energy, and angst. After this album I listened to some Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, Sham 69, and the Clash. Damn if it wasn't all good stuff!

Punk rock is 16 songs in 34 minutes 3

I liked the idea of it but could not make it through the whole album.

male model is funny, i know a girl

Fun punk pop.

I have known who Feargal Sharkey is forever, but I didn't know he was the singer in The Undertones for some reason. John Peel really liked 'Teenage Kicks', it's a good song. It is a bit samey, but a good samey?? It's a good three-chord pop-punk song they play 16 times! 2.5 stars / 5 stars.

Hadn't heard of this band until teenage kicks came on and was like oh yeah that thing. It was perfectly adequate.

Not my favourite genre, but I did enjoy Feargul's vibrato vocals despite usually disliking such delivery. Teenage Kicks is a great song.
