Reviews (page 12 of 13)

5/10. Had its moments, but nothing amazing.

Interesting, one of those artists I knew the name of, recognised a couple of his songs, but had never really listened to. I enjoyed the album, and you can definitely hear the Beatles influences

Lime + Coconut = medicine

Liked the hit. Didn’t listen to much else.

3/5 It was alright, probably won’t listen again

Good tracks. Very calm Spirit in the sky is a solid rocker. Terrible ending to that song.

As a first for this listener, the album title started off this whole experience from a bias towards mockery. Starting off, the songs were token 70s, a sense of fun and lack of seriousness --- a remarkable contrast to the culture of America at this stage of Vietnam. We work our way through lesser known songs we finally come across "Without You" and "Coconut" arguably two of the more popular songs engrained within the lexicon of pop culture notoriety yet almost completely detached from Harry Nilsson himself.

Me, listening to this album in real time: This is kinda nice. Feels like a vanity project, but he actually has some chops. Oh this song is good too, but in a different way. WAIT THIS IS THE LIME IN THE COCONUT GUY?!?!? WTFFFFFFFF A fine lil' album that I was happy to find. It's weird that he's the lime in the coconut guy. Is that song why this album was included? Maybe.

Album had me chuckling with just the name since could be Wilson Schmilsson. What a friggin’ fun, light, upbeat, boppy album with a scattering of deeper, perspective lyrics (you can see all the people who seem to have nothing to say to each other, each day they grow farther and farther from each other…faces so tired of facing each other). Immediately hooked from track #1 Gotta Get Up, grabbed by the lyrics of Driving Along, enthralled by the simple 5 note beat of Early in the Morning and who TF doesn’t love the Coconut song?!? Probably my Trek America passengers that I played it for at least once a day on our 6 week trip😊. Could do without The Moonbeam Song even though some interesting lyrics spattered throughout. Nice soulful tune with some solid horns in Down. Always thought Without You was sung by a woman albeit with a deep voice. Or maybe I just thought a man joined in on the chorus. A good song but I’m way over love songs. Didn’t know he had the more known version of Let The Good Times Roll; enjoyable enough. Nice bass on Jump Into The Fire, a good rockin’ tune. Ending on I’ll Never Leave You a little drag but interesting musical melody that some sections had me thinking of Dance with the Sugar Plum Fairy. Again, would have given 3 and a half stars but the repetitiveness and the few love songs definitely don’t constitute a 4 star rating. But album was definitely added to my library and glad I was exposed to it. And now all I can do is picture myself on my motorcycle driving along at 57,000 MPH, now that’s fast!

Not really my thing, but i enjoyed it!

// Favs: Gotta Get Up / Without You / How Can I Be Sure Of You Score: Decent to Strong 3

A perfect example of the seventies soft rock. A pleasant album.

I like the experimentation of this, but I didn’t love the album.

Love the album name, Coconut is delightfully weird and the rest of the album was decent.

A bit of a gem that went forgotten over the years. Aged, yes, but there is some good stuff in there - including 2 outright excellent songs.

I didn’t particularly enjoy the album as a whole, but just enough really good songs on here to warrant a 3 for me (early in the morning, Coconut, jump into the fire) even though I can’t see myself coming back

Great album. See real classics I didn’t know the artist name.

Pretty decent album

Coconut! Without You!

Great humor. Jump into the Fire is a headbanger.

I didn’t know the name but knew some of the tracks. Pretty enjoyable. Lot of it was just Beatles-light but his more vocal Exploratory bits stand apart. I’d do 3.5 if I could but I’ll stay 3.

just fine

Super album, goede classic rock

half assed this listen. was alright, probably won't come back. wtf is coconut? without you is good...

Kind of got some meatloaf vibes Without you. Best song so far

Solid album. Really wish I could give half stars but I can't :/

Some well known songs. I would list to it again.

I didn't know what to expect but I enjoyed it. I'll check out more of his work. Almost straight 70s AOR but not.

I like few notable tracks from the album but overall just not really my type of music.

Great listen, fun album

A very charming old school pop record. Schmilsson.

Pleasant enough, one of those albums where you recognize a lot of the music without really knowing where you've heard it before. Not bad, not great, an alright album.

liked it but i wouldn't really listen to it again

Just started the first song and I already like it... Overall a really nice album, Without you just takes it to the next level. A solid 3.5 to me

im ngl i couldnt find it on spotify so im just listening to his other album, a little touch of schmilsson in the night, and it would be such a great soundtrack for a movie? the orchestral instruments and his crooner type voice is Everything. i feel like a protagonist in disneys old animated movies

Although it was a fairly fun listen, it didn’t “wow” me or elicit any real emotion. Not bad by any means, but nothing special.

Thus guys sounds like he should voice a Muppet named after him

Nice album for a lazy Saturday morning.

Meh. 2 stars goes up to 3 merely because of the coconut song.

Lots of really good songs in there, but a lot of them were slow, so nothing I would really look to listen to again other than Coconut.

Solala

Bester Albumtitel bisher :D Nilsson Schmilsson Popilsson.

Not necessarily my cup of tea but can definitely envision this album playing in the background of spaces I frequent often. Honorable mention: Without You

I really liked 2 or 3 songs.

Well put together and plenty of catchy hooks.

70's AOR. BT: Gotta Get Up, Coconut, Jump Into the Fire

Nilsson schmilsson. More like shearer schmearer!

Pleasant way to start the morning.

Neither here nor there on this one.

It was ok. Nothing to write home about

Harry seems happy here. Strong album name.

Didn't think I'd know any Harry Nilsson songs but there are some stone-cold classics on here. I'm all for the odd choice of album name and album cover too.

Jump into the Fire is echt te gek!

Not a bad listen. I feel like he’s got a similar style to Randy Newman but for some reason I find it hard to rate him as highly. The back half was better and I should come back to “Let the Good Times Roll” and “Jump Into the Fire”.

I’ve seen this album cover dozens of times over the years while flipping through the used bins. After a listen, I don’t really regret passing it up. It starts off nicely with the Beatlesque track “Gotta Get Up” then the swing-and-a-miss attempt at the blues with “Driving Along”. I was off put by the horns on “Down”, but I’ve never been much of a fan of brass (saxophone excepted of course!). Then the big hit “Without You” played, and I thought ‘oh, that’s who sings this...”. The rest of the album fairly inoffensive, and I liked the bass and drums on “Jump Into the Fire”. Covers of “Cocunut” and “Let the Good Times Roll” made me think the songwriting well for this album was pretty shallow. This is a 2.5, and I’m struggling to round up. Did it anyway.

Better than I thought, maybe listen again.

Ehhh. I'm not super into it at the halfway point. Coconut is cool.

Gotta get up slaps. Good ear worm song from the (very good) netflix show Russian Doll. Had no idea he also did 'Coconut'

Without You is the most notable song on the album alongside Coconut & Jump Into the Fire. Not a bad album and was pleasantly surprised as it progressed. Easy to listen to and it goes quick. Really solid 7/10.

Pop rock. Suave, melódico. Agradable.

I remember "Coconut" being kind-of popular back in the seventies. For me, the stand out track on this album is "Jump Into The Fire". I don't think I'd had heard it until Martin Scorsese used it for the cocaine-fueled meltdown scene in the movie "Goodfellas".

Never knew "gotta get up" or (lime in the) coconut were by this guy. Album was pretty average aside from those hits. Album title was funny though.

Struggled. I can appreciate it’s good, but it doesn’t suit my mood at the moment.

Has the lime in the coconut

Inconsistent. 3 overall. Some 4's, some 2's.

Strange. The band is quite eclectic but they definitely can play. The instrumentals on this are good and lyrically is weird. Overall not my kind of music but its still decent to listen to.

Favorites Gotta get up Coconut Let the good times roll

It’s chill

Need to listen to more - this was really good.

First song is like, 70s Tom Goes. His take on "Get Ready". Joking aside, this is pretty easily listening, just throw it on in the background and it'll be fine. Very Radio friendly. Beyond that, doesn't do much for me. I can tell he's got some talent, but not exactly my cup of tea. I wouldn't reach for the radio dial to turn it to something else though. Oh and I have heard "Without You". Very Beatles-esque. I like the harmonies, actually. This one might be my fav on the album, but it's a bit cheesy, but it's earnest so I can't fault it. This was prob the movie/breakup song of the year. Oh god I have heard "Coconut". Not a fan. I remember Coke used it for their Coke with Lime (Put the lime in the coke, you nut). Pretty good ad, actually. It's on YT. "Jump in the Sea" instrumentation is pretty good actually, thought it was a different band that came up through Spotify. The lyrics/vocals bring it down for me though. Really hard to rate, but 2.5 rounded up to 3 for me.

I really liked this! 3.5 rounded down.

I wouldn't have said that I knew Harry Nilsson, but yet, I knew a bunch of these songs. As a Wilco fan, it's cool to hear what is undoubtedly an influence on the songwriting and recording techniques.

First listen was okay. Cannot listen to Without You unironically anymore tho.

Solid good. Sounds like the Beatles.

Album was pretty groovy. I went into it thinking it’d be weird soft slow stuff but it wasn’t! I had no idea he wrote Coconut. The accent is weird in today’s context but I’m sure it wasn’t in 1971. Honestly a fun album. Enjoyed Jump into the Fire the most I think.

Mellow album. Very typical early 70s soft pop/rock. A couple of recognizable songs. Coconuts. Muppet show memories. Not very memorable. 3/5

Would get a 7 if not for the Coconut song. 6.5/10 FT: Without you

There were a few good songs. An album that was much better than the name implied it would be. Not really for me, though. I liked A Moonbeam Song.

Jump Into The Fire!

Pretty meh, bar the first song and the Spanish song 2.5/5 Top tracks: gotta get up, si no estas tu

I just didn't get it. Bang average in every way, with one exception

Forgettable album, there was nothing really that memorable and it just feels like a random hodgepodge of baroque pop folk songs. I don’t really have much to review because this just sounds like a watered down, stripped Beatles record with not much interesting stuff. Highlights: The Moonbeam Song, Without You, I’ll Never Leave You - The tracks i’ll actually remember Lowlights: The fucking Coconut joke song that was placed in the middle of the album

I really liked this album at first, but then I heard the song called coconut and that brought it down a full star for me

Boring

Surprised to find the lp in my collection. I might never have played it certainly don’t remember. Side 1 is standard early 70’s singer songwriter stuff elevated by a strong band of mostly British sessioners. Side 2 starts with a wank cover of a Badfinger song. The sort of mulch you would hear on Manx Radio in the 80’s and 90’s. Not song is about a coconut and is novelty advert music. Then he decided he’s John Lennon and it’s good. But why listen to this when Plastic Ono Band exists and uses some of the same lads on the backing. Then the last song is more of the “BC Camplight sings a shit song” stuff that’s the Nilsson trademark. Still Jump into the Fire is worth an extra star alone.

The only way to describe the music from this album is saying that it's music. There's nothing remarkable about this album except that it's soft and I calm I guess. In fact, I have already forgotten the songs from this album and can't remember a signle tune.

Great name, not so great album

Gosh, so boring, the more pop side of the Beatles

Harry doesnt like chord changes. Likes repeated patterns and singing melodies over the top. That’s OK cause he’s a good singer. Love the cover that became a cover on this and Maria copied Harry to a T, not the original. But overall not a must listen over and over for me.

its a mix of late beatles style and early queen music. i can olso hear a bit of elvis presley there. the album is not amazing, though.

John Lennon and Paul McCartney apparently called Harry Nilsson their favourite American artist. I mention this not to disagree, but to establish that reasonable people can land in very different places on this one. Nilsson Schmilsson jumps between styles — piano ballads, rock, pop, something that sounds like a German cabaret — without much holding it together. Individual songs are fine. As an album it feels like a playlist someone compiled by accident. "Without You" is genuinely great. The rest is a lot of genre-hopping with varying results. 2/5 — more of a collection than an album.

Had a bit of Beatles sound to it. The album was ok

I got strong Sgt Pepper vibes with the opening track. All fairly forgettable until the famous 7th or so track which was great but then instantly ruined by very naff lyrics in the next track. I think he’s singing “add the lime to the coconut” but over and over again. Some good piano but for me not enough to lift it. 2 1/2.

When this came up I was intrigued as I kind of recognised the name but couldn't place it. First couple of tracks in and I thought hmm standard 70s pop singer? I had nearly switched off by the time it got to "Can't Live" and the penny dropped. Does that really justify a place on this list? Not in my eyes.

Not for me

It was cool. Not something I think I'll go back to, but fun to listen to at least once

I remember this being a lot better. Also, I was five, and putting the lime in the coconut made me laugh like a mental patient for hours.

ok mellow

This is music for divorced dads who want to get back with their ex but don’t really care about custody.

I’m not mad by any means, was kinda almost digging it until coconut. what is happening here? I do love how every song ends like he forgot what he was going to say and just faded it out instead

Didn’t really hit for me. A couple of songs in the middle seemed promising, but the album was bookended by pretty boring ones. 1.5-2

I could really take or leave this album. Some fun songs (I have a love-hate relationship with "Coconut"), but altogether pretty forgettable as far as the experience of the album.

Artiste inconnu. =>2/5

Definitely not for me

Mr Nilsson, you should not be doing that dialect.

Kinda goofy and funky

I love how Harrison is in clothes of bath. The album doesn't have passion, is just music.

Without you is so krass. Der Rest gut aber nicht für everyday 2-3

Ein Killer-Song rettet das Album nicht.

Never understood the hype about Nilsson.

fun but meh

this i just kind of nothing , early 70's with lots of kind of gestures to the worst excesses of the 60's . I have heard all these songs done better by other people.

It's a weird album, very accessible songwriting but also feel very throwaway. Without You, despite it being very well written feels very out place amongst the others as it's a completely different vibe. It's cool to know where Coconut, a song I know from the Reservoir Dogs soundtrack, came from.

I don‘t know what to write, in my head is only „lime in the coconut“

It's the kind of music where you say it's fun, but you mean it's trash.

I think living without this is fine.

Kinda mid edd sheeran vibes

A few Okay songs, likely will not re-visit.

I have never heard of this dude before. I think I've heard 'Gotta Get Up' in some ad and that's about it? I have no idea if I am too young to have heard of him or too Romanian. Nonetheless, it seems it wasn't such a great loss not having heard any of this earlier on. It's fine. It sounds like music, just not music that I enjoy. It's not my thing in the slightest and I'm not gonna sit here and pretend I do like it. 'Without You' is by far the best song on this album. Also, 'Coconut' gets too much hate; it's fun compared to other songs on the album. I much prefer that type of song. 'Down' was also a fine track, but everything is just too boring for me. It's folk; what more can I say? I'm trying to be as expressive as I can so when I reread a review trying to remember my opinion on an album, I know exactly how I felt about it and WHY I felt that way. In this case, though, I can't elaborate any more than 'it's folk.' Future me will get it.

Nada demais. Não me cativou.

Passed mostly unnoticed. Nothing stuck really

i was surprisingly familiar with some of these favs: gotta get up early in the morning down without you rating 2/5

Coconut saved it from a 1

Not a fan. It wasnt bad but I still didnt enjoy it

Jump Into The Fire is an absolute banger which deserves to be played loud

Jack Johnson for boomers. Giving it 2 on the strength of Without You but it's barely deserved.

Right in the middle of the mid table of the two stars. Tom.

So boring, man. Goddamn. Why is this here? What bridges did this build? Why must I listen to this before I die?

really interesting album. sometimes melodramatic and sometimes goofy and strange. my favorite songs were Gotta Get Up, Without You and I'll Never Leave You. The latter two songs are such beautiful ballads i will definitley revisit those songs again. however the album as a whole was okay. really like his vocals and the piano. 5/10

I wouldn't call it a classic.

Unique and funky ! Very dreamy. Fav song is ‘Early in the Morning’.

Got excited when I saw the album cover. Actually thought I was going to listen to something cool. He's an American Beatle everyone! Good if you like the Beatles I'm guessing. Gotta Get Up, Without You and Jump Into The Fire are definitely the best songs on the album. Thing is though, why the fuck would you ever make Coconut?? I'm going to actively avoid putting this album on because I don't want to listen to fucking "she put de lime in de coconut she drank em boat up,". All in all it just feels like a bad version of Ogden's Nut Gone Flake.

some thoughts as I listened: - for a long time I’ve found gotta get up to be quite annoying and I fear that did extend a little bit to some of the other songs - quite funny album title - sometimes things are just a little too jangly for me (this was one of the times) - I did like Without You - I was hoping the Harry Nilsson song that lana del rey sings about where his voice cracks at 2:05 would be on this album but unfortunately it wasn’t - omg Coconut was so annoying

Jump In The Fire is a banger but the rest is meh. Just another album of one great song with mediocrity surrounding it.

It’s fine but kinda cheesy.

Heard of him but never knew any of his music. Recognised a couple of tracks. An alright listen

a lot of dif vibes in one album, surf music and classical 70??

this album coulda been half decent if he made it like half as long and just cut most of the stuff. it's just boring with interesting points sprinkled few and few apart.

I'm sure if I were into singer-songwriter albums, I would appreciate this album more, as it does have interesting parts. Like, if he just focused on that interesting stuff more and cut a lot of the filler, it would be better. Not my thing.

Dreamy soft rock with a great ear for poppy hooks and harmonies. Mostly piano-based songwriting with an extreme Beatles influence. It has a very gentle ambling lazy Saturday morning feel to it - floaty and laid back af. It makes the Eagles look hardcore, makes the Beach Boys seem metal. The combo of Without You and Coconut is insane - the two most famous songs on the album seem to circulate independently but are right next to each other - an saccharine ballad so overwrought it hurts and then the goofiest bit of faux-tropical beach bum ephemera imaginable. There's a depressed feel that haunts and undermines the uptempo tracks - truly an album for divorced guys getting day drunk on rum and failing to trick themselves into thinking they're happier without her.

Heard it before. Other than Gotta Get Up and Without You this album is kinda just meh? Nothing exciting here 2/5

Very Blues/rock inspired, it's a really nice sounding album, not much replay ability for me imo but nice music in general with interesting yet good sounding instrumentals, there wasn't much to have me invested or keep interest through the album which says a lot since it is a 35 min album.

Er staat 1 oké nummer op dit album

Lime in the Coconut has never really been my vibe

Mehhhh… 🤷🏻‍♀️ Stand-outs - Without You - Gotta Get Up

Another inessential 70s rock album, I’m so fed up of these. They always have like one decent single that came out of it and the rest is just pure dog water.

I remember Without You from when it was originally released but had never knowingly heard any other Nilsson tracks. They were mostly quite melancholy and a bit depresssing, or occasionally just plain weird (Coconut). I'm sure I'll only remember him for Without You because I won't be seeking this album out again.

Decent album but nothing I’d save for another listen. Never heard of this guy but it reminded me of the e Beatles and on that coconut song it really reminded me of Mac Demarco.

Filled a gap in the musical knowledge, but isn't my cup of tea

Lyrics are silly and repetitive. A couple songs were okay but generally I didn't care for this one.

i listened to this three times cuz i couldn't remember a thing about it after 2/5

Very quiet and lyric based, not my style.

Put the lime in the coconut Not my jam couldn't finish it either

Never really understood the amazement with this guy. His stuff is good and fit the time but didn't seem to break any ground to my ear.

The reality of this project is that someday you get Purple Rain or Born to Run. Other days you get Nilsson Schmilsson.

so unforgettable

Über weite Strecken habe ich mich gelangweilt.

I didn’t find it particularly special. Some fun funky instrumentals, but wouldn’t recommend to a friend or listen again (besides maybe “Down”)

Not much I would come back to but glad to have heard it

Quite okay but not my thang

Tiene un clásico como “Without you”… pero no me encantó el CD

So this is who we have to blame for the stupid lime in the coconut song…

This feels like a sober white persons idea of fun, but not in like a straight edge punk rock kinda way. A dad joke in the form of upbeat non-offensive alternative pop. Not too too bad, but I really wouldn't put this on intentionally.

Can't live

It was okay, but really struggled to understand why this is an essential to hear before you die

Is as though Harry is trying to find a voice for each instrument played.

It sounds like the first part of the 70's. Like the 60's had a bit of a hangover and started to think they needed to change things up a bit. It's alright but not for me.

While ths album has it's moments it also has the bloody awful Coconut on it

good bass but dont like the echo voice effects.

An album with a shitty cover by a hit-making drunk, whose only song I know is the one Mariah Carey covered, and who’s apparently famous for drinking with Lennon. Well-produced pop that leaves absolutely no trace after three listens at work. And yet… it goes down easy. But I won’t be coming back to it.

Some decent songs/moments, but this isn't doing it for me.

exceptionally mid. i was kinda hoping it would be done soon after i got through "without you". i could see myself listening to a couple songs here and there, but as a whole, this album was neither good or bad. coconut is a crime against humanity for sure though. i'm bumping it down to a 2 from 3 just because of that song. standout tracks: gotta get up, down

Dumb but inoffensive 70’s soft rock

“Early in the Morning” was a standout. Some catchy rhythms. Overall not my favorite. It occasionally sounded like a comedy album that wasn’t landing quite right. Reminded me of Jason Segal in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

It was alright. I enjoyed the coconuts track, but Without You just reminds me of Smack The Pony. He has certainly pumped out a lot of albums.

better than offspring - smash for sure.

This album sounded exactly the way I imagine classic late 60s, early 70s music in my head. Overall a decent album I'd put on in the background on a lazy sunday afternoon, but not much more for me.

Meh. 2/5

'Down' and 'Jump into the Fire' are bangers. Didn't know this was the Coconut song guy either. Fun little record.

feels very 70's, fun

One classic

I don’t see much of the appeal. Ya, there’s the two hits, well, one hit and one song you heard way too many times anyway.

It would be 3 stars because it’s just fine… but that coconut song is enraging so this gets a 2

It’s fine

I've been meaning to listen to this record for ages, mainly because of Harry's connections with a certain Liverpudlian beat combo. So when it popped up here, I was keen to give it a go. There's no denying the craft. Harry is a great songwriter and there's loads of interesting melodies and chords. Great musicianship, immaculately arranged, produced and mixed. It's very Beatle-esque, in the way that a lot of 'AOR' music throughout 1970's was. It also contains the original power ballad, 'Without You'. I had high hopes for someone rated so highly by both Lennon and McCartney. Unfortunately, it's mostly just quite bland and polite. The only track that seems to let rip at all (but then only a bit) is "Jump into the Fire". Overall verdict: slightly disappointing.

An album with songs on it. Some fun instruments and intriguing instrumental moments. Bland-ish songwriting on the track list, not a fan of the ballad-y songs. Coconut has the magic. Best tunes: driving along, the moonbeam song, coconut, jump into the fire, i’ll never leave you

Pleasant driving music, laughed and sang along when “without you” came on unexpectedly. Was horrified when the “lime in de coconut” song began blasting out with all the Mike Read energy. An interesting album, don’t like all of it but quite enjoyed listening to it.

Quando não aguentava mais ouvir "Without You", eis que aparece uma versão em espanhol. A faixa "Jump into the Fire" é bacana, mas o disco é fraco!

reminds of Brian Wilson Smile-era and maybe ELO. "Without You" is beautiful, but ultimately a Badfinger song. starts to head into Meat Loaf territory. Coconut is memorable, painful and nightmarish.

Wow this album was very interesting to say the least. For starters I had no idea there was a version of the “coconut and lime” song where it sounds COMPLETELY different from the cover that’s much, MUCH, more well known. Like it’s almost disorienting because your brain is trying to fill in the spots where “DOCTOR!” should be in the song. I also really liked the opening track which got my hopes up cause I didn’t really care for this album as a whole. I listened to this album several times cause I thought it’d grow on me. But sadly, as of right now, this album has not grown on me at all. I just find the whole album to be pretty underwhelming despite his impressive vocal range. In fact, that’s basically burying the lead. The real standout aspect of this album is his vocals are incredible. I just wish there was more memorable music on this album.

Not my cuppa bland tea.

"Jump into the Fire" is the highlight here.

I found it kind of bland and uninteresting. I think the 1970's music really just doesn't speak to me

mellow, and easy to listen to. it was alright, but it was fun knowing where the line and the coconut song originated from.

Couple good tracks. Rest is dates.

Ima be real, this ain’t it chief. Love the album name tho. Like that coconut song (lol) as well and without you

Only really liked Without You, which I never knew wasn't a Mariah Carey original, and thought the rest was fine (except Coconut). Not much into singing-focused music anyway.

A lot of variety though would not go out of my way to listen again

I can appreciate it, but not for me. Jump into the fire is a good one tho

This was a very unmemorable album. Nothing was particularly offensive with the sound, but it just didn’t resonate with me. Even the song I recognized, “Coconut”, is one I kind of find annoying. I’ll chalk this one up to me having a case of the Monday’s. Favorite tracks: - Gotta Get Up - Without You

Very few good songs and quite a lot very weird songs that I don't think fit anywhere. Not a fan of it except for Without me, even though I've read it's also a cover.

There’s no two ways about it: “Nilsson Schmilsson” is a silly name for an album. It’s an effect heightened by the album’s cover art, a photo of the unassuming and bedressinggowned silly saussillson himself standing, seemingly, in his kitchen. And that’s plausibly where we find Harry on track one, rousing to the world reluctantly in “Gotta Get Up” – a song that doesn’t want to grow up. (The song, fittingly for its narration of glory days gone by, that Natasha Leone’s character in “Russian Doll” is fated to hear forever more at the start of her Groundhog Day.) There’s something of a juvenile undercurrent to this record – whether intentionally (as in the limes in the coconut) or because of factors outside of Nilsson’s ultimate control (“Without You” might have once carried more of an emotional gut punch, but by now has accompanied too many parodies to do much more than, somehow, summon the face of Adam Sandler for me). Elsewhere we have big McCartney energy (“Down”, “Jump Into the Fire”), pleasant pedestrian folksy pop rock (“The Moonbeam Song”, “Driving Along”) and a couple more references to the morning. Plenty here to showcase Nilsson’s incredible voice and talent for arrangement; but nothing to blow me away. Can you have the Nilsson without the Schmillson? I’m not sure. There’s a profound knowingness to this album, that’s for sure – I’m just not sure there’s much in it for me.

This is like a less drugged up Bowie mixed with Simon and Garfunkel type lyrics. This guy seems to have a sense of humor based on the album title and the classic British feeling of an album cover which I like to call “ come hither and gaze at me in my night gown as I stare off into space whilst in my kitchen making tea and crumpets”. I’m at a loss here at the moment. I don’t see or hear anything groundbreaking with this album. Ok stop the presses. He does “Without You and coconut”? I get it, in a sense. That’s a big song. And yes I may have bought the album just for that song, that’s how good it is. But those songs alone can’t take the album out of mediocrity. Choice cut: Without You

found this quite annoying

This was largely forgettable for me (except for Coconut, which became stuck in my head and I wish I could forget it). Very meh 70s pop

Yeah I know that Lennon and McCartney thought he was the best American artist but to each his own and Nilsson just isn’t my cup a tea.

Hearing "you put the lime in the coconut" left me shocked, I hadn't heard that phrase in like 15 years. Never thought I'd run into it in the 1001Gen gauntlet. That aside, this was just an okay record to me. Gotta Get Up, Early in the Morning, and Down we're pretty enjoyable, but overall I was pretty lukewarm.

Bland and simple elevator music Not sure why it’s so popular

Below average for modern ears but probably ahead of its time in 1971

Some surprisingly groovy numbers. And some not so surprising schmalz.

listened at work, didn't mind it but won't be revisiting

My first time listening to anything Harry Nilsson. I found this album really timeless and a really well-written pop record, he's a great songwriter, but it's also a bit boring for my taste and I just don't care. Great record though, blew my mind how many songs I recognized that I never realized was him, just not my thing.

Ganz spannend. Werde ich allerdings nie wieder hören

Sometimes annoying, sometimes mediocre Pop, which follows along the lines of the album Cover, in which Nillson couldn't even be bothered to get dressed for the album or even name it properly.

the album is fine i just need it to Go Away lol

Never heard of him, but recognized a few songs. Bizarre album.

Klaus Voormann, Herbie Flowers, Jim Gordon, Chris Spedding).

I've only ever heard 'Everybody's Talkin'' by Harry Nilsson, and I really love that song so I was hopeful for this one. I will echo the sentiment of other reviews saying that he's a bit like the American version of The Beatles. I also want to say that he's not QUITE at the level of The Beatles (and I'm not even a Fab Four Fanboy). It's almost there, but there's something missing and I'm not sure what. 'Early In The Morning' was quite an interesting tune. Minimal and delicate. 'Down' was also a highlight. A bouncy big feel type track. 'Jump Into The Fire' was also pretty good. I had no idea he did a version of 'Without You' or that he was the guy who wrote 'Coconut' so that was pretty cool to find out. Honestly, if you ever want to listen to this album, listen to The Beatles instead and you'll have a better time in my opinion.

I did not recognize the artist when it came up, and was expecting an album that I didn't know at all. But I know Gotta Get Up, Without You, and Coconut (which is fave of mine from being in Practical Magic) Terrible cover of an awesome song, Let the Good Times Roll Overall I don't care too much about the album, but because it has those songs that I enjoy/know and didn't realize were by this guy, I was gonna give it an extra star, but then loses the star for the terrible cover :P

it was ok

A pretty inconsistent collection.

Decent tunes, a little goofy here and there. No this special, but nothing sucked either.

I'm really half and half on this one. Really enjoyed much of the album but half the songs were painful for me. Lime in the coconut is always a joy.

Didn't enjoy the listen. It's artful with great musicianship but his writing has a sort of goofy sitcom-opening-theme-song feel to them. The transition from Without You to Coconut is jarring.

It's like saccharine. It seems really sweet on the surfice but it leaves you empty and you have a weird taste in your mouth.

Didn’t care much for it. The guy who put together this list really favored a specific kind of sound and it’s showing.

Good music funny name but not my style

only 1 1/2 interesting songs

This one is right in line with the Love and Gram Parsons of feeling like just nothing happened in the album. Not necessarily bad, but the drumming bit in Jump Into the Fire was the only thing that caught my attention. Same as the previous two: could be a 3, but I liked it less than Love and Gram Parsons so its in the High 2 range.

Coconut was kind of fun but wasn’t too engaged in this one.

From the description I thought I would enjoy this more than I did. Aside from the “novelty(?)” song about coconuts this was a one and done.

Too Broadway sounding for me, 3.5/10

Not my cup of tea.

not bad. three hits, mellow stuff.

I've never liked this kind of music. I don't really know how to even categorize it. There are a few spots on this album I really like - I'll always have a soft spot for Coconut and I like Jump Into the Fire. But the rest I can do without. It's fine, it's not great. It just is. 2.5/5 but I think I'm going to round down on this one because it just does nothing for me at all.

I read that this was the favourite American singer of The Beatles, and their influence on Nilsson is certainly apparent. Many of the songs sound very Beatlesque, while the harmonies remind me a lot of The Beach Boys. I love the opener and I liked the harmonies on The Moonbeam Song, but besides that, the album did not do much for me. His most famous song, Without You, is probably my least favourite from this after Coconut. Half of this is okay to great, the other half is bad. But the bad parts are worse than the good parts are good. 2/5

Pop, Rock, 1971 -> 2

YESSSSSSSSS. Lime in the coconut!

It's a nice album with the best "Without You" version. But mostly just ok generic rock to me, though the first track did make me think I was listening to the Annie soundtrack for a few seconds.

Why is this American dabbling in brit-pop? The highlight of the album was the unexpected entrance of the accordion and brass on the opening track, which was otherwise just a tired and uninspired reflection on growing up. I just didn't find this all that interesting but it's an acceptable 2.5/5 down to a 2

This was a fine album, some might even say a good album. But then came along "Coconut" and I was forced to relive the inescapable mid-00s meme of a Coca-Cola commercial.

Hippy dippy. I get it, definitely just not for me (2)

The original Harry styles?

Good singing, but not much else. Today was not my day.

Pleasant enough, nothing specific grabbed me though. Honestly the biggest response it got from me was when the album ended so quickly that I thought my music player had stopped prematurely.

Didn't know his name but recognised a few of the tunes. OK, but I'll never go back to him

Pretty boring, but nothing wrong with it. Coconut is a banger

Had heard gotta get up, which is such a banger! The album is kind of boring for some part, but has some good song. The low point is definitely coconut 🥥

Original style, but just not the type of music I would listen to normally

- Apparently Nilsson is known as the "American Beatle." So this might be the first time that I understood why people who did not grow up with the Beatles do not get the hype...because this was not doing much for me. - There is obviously a lot of craftsmanship and complexity at play here. But I did not find much enjoyable to listen to. - "Without You" is solid. "Jump Into The Fire" was similarly strong, but boy did I feel that seven minutes. - I like weird stuff. But this was too quirky for my taste...apparently I only want my quirky to be British. - The fact that "Coconut" was on the Billboard Top Ten makes me simultaneously proud and disappointed in my nation.

This was fun ish, sounds like something my aunt would listen to

really not my vibe but i could see a beatles lover really digging it

Loads of songs I knew, all bad

He has a great voice but the songs didn't really appeal to me, the album might be to old to resonate with me maybe. Even the "number one song" wasn't something I would listen to again if I had a choice. That might be because the cover seems so much better to me though.

Without you is pretty good, rest of the album is just silly

Its fine, the guys voice is good and musically is nice on the ear. It just doesn't evoke any emotion so it gets thrown into the 'boring dad rock' pile.

I'm sorry but this is just not it lol

Couple of good songs

I’m not sure what to think about this. It’s all over the place. Without You is so sappy it’s almost satirical. I actually thought the beyond silly Coconut was written for a commercial. Gotta Get Up is fun. A few other mildly entertaining songs. Just a puzzling album that I could not completely get into.

Ehh, couple of good songs.

You think you’re funny Nilsson? Nilsson Schmilsson??? Really? Actually that’s a pretty good one. Wish I’d thought of that. Anyway this one isn’t it boys

weird.

Felt more like a collection of songs than an album. Some good, some about putting limes in coconuts. 2.5

This was lowkey kinda torture for most of it. Not a fan at all. I didn't know "lime and the coconut" was on this album until I got there, and it was a negative jumpscare.

Meh. Not my genre. Stand-out hit is 'Jump Into the Fire', but I guess I don't really like the slow, chill tempo of the songs listed here. Can see why it is influential, though.

One hit wonder

okay 5/10

ts is mid asl got few goodies ig

Boooring....

Hyvä Laulaja. Myös "eksentrinen" laulelija. Libudibudauchuuuu!! Se oli paras biisi.

If this album got anything right, it was the title. What a boring retread of the 60s. And it gave us the most annoying song? Terrible legacy.

Niektoré dobre ale inak taka nuda trosku

It was short and sweet but the album wasn’t very good.
