Reviews (page 13 of 14)

Dreamy soft rock with a great ear for poppy hooks and harmonies. Mostly piano-based songwriting with an extreme Beatles influence. It has a very gentle ambling lazy Saturday morning feel to it - floaty and laid back af. It makes the Eagles look hardcore, makes the Beach Boys seem metal. The combo of Without You and Coconut is insane - the two most famous songs on the album seem to circulate independently but are right next to each other - an saccharine ballad so overwrought it hurts and then the goofiest bit of faux-tropical beach bum ephemera imaginable. There's a depressed feel that haunts and undermines the uptempo tracks - truly an album for divorced guys getting day drunk on rum and failing to trick themselves into thinking they're happier without her.

Heard it before. Other than Gotta Get Up and Without You this album is kinda just meh? Nothing exciting here 2/5

1 hitje, maar voor de rest soms wat onsamenhangend en geen slechte muziek maar niet mijn smaak

Very Blues/rock inspired, it's a really nice sounding album, not much replay ability for me imo but nice music in general with interesting yet good sounding instrumentals, there wasn't much to have me invested or keep interest through the album which says a lot since it is a 35 min album.

Er staat 1 oké nummer op dit album

Lime in the Coconut has never really been my vibe

Mehhhh… 🤷🏻‍♀️ Stand-outs - Without You - Gotta Get Up

Another inessential 70s rock album, I’m so fed up of these. They always have like one decent single that came out of it and the rest is just pure dog water.

I remember Without You from when it was originally released but had never knowingly heard any other Nilsson tracks. They were mostly quite melancholy and a bit depresssing, or occasionally just plain weird (Coconut). I'm sure I'll only remember him for Without You because I won't be seeking this album out again.

Decent album but nothing I’d save for another listen. Never heard of this guy but it reminded me of the e Beatles and on that coconut song it really reminded me of Mac Demarco.

Filled a gap in the musical knowledge, but isn't my cup of tea

Lyrics are silly and repetitive. A couple songs were okay but generally I didn't care for this one.

i listened to this three times cuz i couldn't remember a thing about it after 2/5

Very quiet and lyric based, not my style.

Put the lime in the coconut Not my jam couldn't finish it either

Never really understood the amazement with this guy. His stuff is good and fit the time but didn't seem to break any ground to my ear.

The reality of this project is that someday you get Purple Rain or Born to Run. Other days you get Nilsson Schmilsson.

so unforgettable

Über weite Strecken habe ich mich gelangweilt.

I didn’t find it particularly special. Some fun funky instrumentals, but wouldn’t recommend to a friend or listen again (besides maybe “Down”)

Not much I would come back to but glad to have heard it

Quite okay but not my thang

Tiene un clásico como “Without you”… pero no me encantó el CD

So this is who we have to blame for the stupid lime in the coconut song…

This feels like a sober white persons idea of fun, but not in like a straight edge punk rock kinda way. A dad joke in the form of upbeat non-offensive alternative pop. Not too too bad, but I really wouldn't put this on intentionally.

Can't live

It was okay, but really struggled to understand why this is an essential to hear before you die

Is as though Harry is trying to find a voice for each instrument played.

It sounds like the first part of the 70's. Like the 60's had a bit of a hangover and started to think they needed to change things up a bit. It's alright but not for me.

While ths album has it's moments it also has the bloody awful Coconut on it

good bass but dont like the echo voice effects.

An album with a shitty cover by a hit-making drunk, whose only song I know is the one Mariah Carey covered, and who’s apparently famous for drinking with Lennon. Well-produced pop that leaves absolutely no trace after three listens at work. And yet… it goes down easy. But I won’t be coming back to it.

Some decent songs/moments, but this isn't doing it for me.

exceptionally mid. i was kinda hoping it would be done soon after i got through "without you". i could see myself listening to a couple songs here and there, but as a whole, this album was neither good or bad. coconut is a crime against humanity for sure though. i'm bumping it down to a 2 from 3 just because of that song. standout tracks: gotta get up, down

Dumb but inoffensive 70’s soft rock

“Early in the Morning” was a standout. Some catchy rhythms. Overall not my favorite. It occasionally sounded like a comedy album that wasn’t landing quite right. Reminded me of Jason Segal in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

It was alright. I enjoyed the coconuts track, but Without You just reminds me of Smack The Pony. He has certainly pumped out a lot of albums.

better than offspring - smash for sure.

This album sounded exactly the way I imagine classic late 60s, early 70s music in my head. Overall a decent album I'd put on in the background on a lazy sunday afternoon, but not much more for me.

Meh. 2/5

'Down' and 'Jump into the Fire' are bangers. Didn't know this was the Coconut song guy either. Fun little record.

feels very 70's, fun

One classic

I don’t see much of the appeal. Ya, there’s the two hits, well, one hit and one song you heard way too many times anyway.

It would be 3 stars because it’s just fine… but that coconut song is enraging so this gets a 2

It’s fine

I've been meaning to listen to this record for ages, mainly because of Harry's connections with a certain Liverpudlian beat combo. So when it popped up here, I was keen to give it a go. There's no denying the craft. Harry is a great songwriter and there's loads of interesting melodies and chords. Great musicianship, immaculately arranged, produced and mixed. It's very Beatle-esque, in the way that a lot of 'AOR' music throughout 1970's was. It also contains the original power ballad, 'Without You'. I had high hopes for someone rated so highly by both Lennon and McCartney. Unfortunately, it's mostly just quite bland and polite. The only track that seems to let rip at all (but then only a bit) is "Jump into the Fire". Overall verdict: slightly disappointing.

An album with songs on it. Some fun instruments and intriguing instrumental moments. Bland-ish songwriting on the track list, not a fan of the ballad-y songs. Coconut has the magic. Best tunes: driving along, the moonbeam song, coconut, jump into the fire, i’ll never leave you

Pleasant driving music, laughed and sang along when “without you” came on unexpectedly. Was horrified when the “lime in de coconut” song began blasting out with all the Mike Read energy. An interesting album, don’t like all of it but quite enjoyed listening to it.

Quando não aguentava mais ouvir "Without You", eis que aparece uma versão em espanhol. A faixa "Jump into the Fire" é bacana, mas o disco é fraco!

reminds of Brian Wilson Smile-era and maybe ELO. "Without You" is beautiful, but ultimately a Badfinger song. starts to head into Meat Loaf territory. Coconut is memorable, painful and nightmarish.

Wow this album was very interesting to say the least. For starters I had no idea there was a version of the “coconut and lime” song where it sounds COMPLETELY different from the cover that’s much, MUCH, more well known. Like it’s almost disorienting because your brain is trying to fill in the spots where “DOCTOR!” should be in the song. I also really liked the opening track which got my hopes up cause I didn’t really care for this album as a whole. I listened to this album several times cause I thought it’d grow on me. But sadly, as of right now, this album has not grown on me at all. I just find the whole album to be pretty underwhelming despite his impressive vocal range. In fact, that’s basically burying the lead. The real standout aspect of this album is his vocals are incredible. I just wish there was more memorable music on this album.

Not my cuppa bland tea.

"Jump into the Fire" is the highlight here.

I found it kind of bland and uninteresting. I think the 1970's music really just doesn't speak to me

mellow, and easy to listen to. it was alright, but it was fun knowing where the line and the coconut song originated from.

Couple good tracks. Rest is dates.

Ima be real, this ain’t it chief. Love the album name tho. Like that coconut song (lol) as well and without you

Only really liked Without You, which I never knew wasn't a Mariah Carey original, and thought the rest was fine (except Coconut). Not much into singing-focused music anyway.

A lot of variety though would not go out of my way to listen again

I can appreciate it, but not for me. Jump into the fire is a good one tho

This was a very unmemorable album. Nothing was particularly offensive with the sound, but it just didn’t resonate with me. Even the song I recognized, “Coconut”, is one I kind of find annoying. I’ll chalk this one up to me having a case of the Monday’s. Favorite tracks: - Gotta Get Up - Without You

Very few good songs and quite a lot very weird songs that I don't think fit anywhere. Not a fan of it except for Without me, even though I've read it's also a cover.

There’s no two ways about it: “Nilsson Schmilsson” is a silly name for an album. It’s an effect heightened by the album’s cover art, a photo of the unassuming and bedressinggowned silly saussillson himself standing, seemingly, in his kitchen. And that’s plausibly where we find Harry on track one, rousing to the world reluctantly in “Gotta Get Up” – a song that doesn’t want to grow up. (The song, fittingly for its narration of glory days gone by, that Natasha Leone’s character in “Russian Doll” is fated to hear forever more at the start of her Groundhog Day.) There’s something of a juvenile undercurrent to this record – whether intentionally (as in the limes in the coconut) or because of factors outside of Nilsson’s ultimate control (“Without You” might have once carried more of an emotional gut punch, but by now has accompanied too many parodies to do much more than, somehow, summon the face of Adam Sandler for me). Elsewhere we have big McCartney energy (“Down”, “Jump Into the Fire”), pleasant pedestrian folksy pop rock (“The Moonbeam Song”, “Driving Along”) and a couple more references to the morning. Plenty here to showcase Nilsson’s incredible voice and talent for arrangement; but nothing to blow me away. Can you have the Nilsson without the Schmillson? I’m not sure. There’s a profound knowingness to this album, that’s for sure – I’m just not sure there’s much in it for me.

This is like a less drugged up Bowie mixed with Simon and Garfunkel type lyrics. This guy seems to have a sense of humor based on the album title and the classic British feeling of an album cover which I like to call “ come hither and gaze at me in my night gown as I stare off into space whilst in my kitchen making tea and crumpets”. I’m at a loss here at the moment. I don’t see or hear anything groundbreaking with this album. Ok stop the presses. He does “Without You and coconut”? I get it, in a sense. That’s a big song. And yes I may have bought the album just for that song, that’s how good it is. But those songs alone can’t take the album out of mediocrity. Choice cut: Without You

found this quite annoying

This was largely forgettable for me (except for Coconut, which became stuck in my head and I wish I could forget it). Very meh 70s pop

Yeah I know that Lennon and McCartney thought he was the best American artist but to each his own and Nilsson just isn’t my cup a tea.

Hearing "you put the lime in the coconut" left me shocked, I hadn't heard that phrase in like 15 years. Never thought I'd run into it in the 1001Gen gauntlet. That aside, this was just an okay record to me. Gotta Get Up, Early in the Morning, and Down we're pretty enjoyable, but overall I was pretty lukewarm.

Bland and simple elevator music Not sure why it’s so popular

Below average for modern ears but probably ahead of its time in 1971

Some surprisingly groovy numbers. And some not so surprising schmalz.

listened at work, didn't mind it but won't be revisiting

My first time listening to anything Harry Nilsson. I found this album really timeless and a really well-written pop record, he's a great songwriter, but it's also a bit boring for my taste and I just don't care. Great record though, blew my mind how many songs I recognized that I never realized was him, just not my thing.

Ganz spannend. Werde ich allerdings nie wieder hören

Sometimes annoying, sometimes mediocre Pop, which follows along the lines of the album Cover, in which Nillson couldn't even be bothered to get dressed for the album or even name it properly.

the album is fine i just need it to Go Away lol

Never heard of him, but recognized a few songs. Bizarre album.

Klaus Voormann, Herbie Flowers, Jim Gordon, Chris Spedding).

I've only ever heard 'Everybody's Talkin'' by Harry Nilsson, and I really love that song so I was hopeful for this one. I will echo the sentiment of other reviews saying that he's a bit like the American version of The Beatles. I also want to say that he's not QUITE at the level of The Beatles (and I'm not even a Fab Four Fanboy). It's almost there, but there's something missing and I'm not sure what. 'Early In The Morning' was quite an interesting tune. Minimal and delicate. 'Down' was also a highlight. A bouncy big feel type track. 'Jump Into The Fire' was also pretty good. I had no idea he did a version of 'Without You' or that he was the guy who wrote 'Coconut' so that was pretty cool to find out. Honestly, if you ever want to listen to this album, listen to The Beatles instead and you'll have a better time in my opinion.

I did not recognize the artist when it came up, and was expecting an album that I didn't know at all. But I know Gotta Get Up, Without You, and Coconut (which is fave of mine from being in Practical Magic) Terrible cover of an awesome song, Let the Good Times Roll Overall I don't care too much about the album, but because it has those songs that I enjoy/know and didn't realize were by this guy, I was gonna give it an extra star, but then loses the star for the terrible cover :P

it was ok

A pretty inconsistent collection.

Decent tunes, a little goofy here and there. No this special, but nothing sucked either.

I'm really half and half on this one. Really enjoyed much of the album but half the songs were painful for me. Lime in the coconut is always a joy.

Didn't enjoy the listen. It's artful with great musicianship but his writing has a sort of goofy sitcom-opening-theme-song feel to them. The transition from Without You to Coconut is jarring.

It's like saccharine. It seems really sweet on the surfice but it leaves you empty and you have a weird taste in your mouth.

Didn’t care much for it. The guy who put together this list really favored a specific kind of sound and it’s showing.

Good music funny name but not my style

only 1 1/2 interesting songs

This one is right in line with the Love and Gram Parsons of feeling like just nothing happened in the album. Not necessarily bad, but the drumming bit in Jump Into the Fire was the only thing that caught my attention. Same as the previous two: could be a 3, but I liked it less than Love and Gram Parsons so its in the High 2 range.

Coconut was kind of fun but wasn’t too engaged in this one.

From the description I thought I would enjoy this more than I did. Aside from the “novelty(?)” song about coconuts this was a one and done.

Too Broadway sounding for me, 3.5/10

Not my cup of tea.

not bad. three hits, mellow stuff.

I've never liked this kind of music. I don't really know how to even categorize it. There are a few spots on this album I really like - I'll always have a soft spot for Coconut and I like Jump Into the Fire. But the rest I can do without. It's fine, it's not great. It just is. 2.5/5 but I think I'm going to round down on this one because it just does nothing for me at all.

I read that this was the favourite American singer of The Beatles, and their influence on Nilsson is certainly apparent. Many of the songs sound very Beatlesque, while the harmonies remind me a lot of The Beach Boys. I love the opener and I liked the harmonies on The Moonbeam Song, but besides that, the album did not do much for me. His most famous song, Without You, is probably my least favourite from this after Coconut. Half of this is okay to great, the other half is bad. But the bad parts are worse than the good parts are good. 2/5

Pop, Rock, 1971 -> 2

Der var da glimt af noget særLiiiiiiime in da coconut....

YESSSSSSSSS. Lime in the coconut!

It's a nice album with the best "Without You" version. But mostly just ok generic rock to me, though the first track did make me think I was listening to the Annie soundtrack for a few seconds.

Why is this American dabbling in brit-pop? The highlight of the album was the unexpected entrance of the accordion and brass on the opening track, which was otherwise just a tired and uninspired reflection on growing up. I just didn't find this all that interesting but it's an acceptable 2.5/5 down to a 2

This was a fine album, some might even say a good album. But then came along "Coconut" and I was forced to relive the inescapable mid-00s meme of a Coca-Cola commercial.

Hippy dippy. I get it, definitely just not for me (2)

The original Harry styles?

Good singing, but not much else. Today was not my day.

Pleasant enough, nothing specific grabbed me though. Honestly the biggest response it got from me was when the album ended so quickly that I thought my music player had stopped prematurely.

Didn't know his name but recognised a few of the tunes. OK, but I'll never go back to him

Pretty boring, but nothing wrong with it. Coconut is a banger

Had heard gotta get up, which is such a banger! The album is kind of boring for some part, but has some good song. The low point is definitely coconut 🥥

Original style, but just not the type of music I would listen to normally

- Apparently Nilsson is known as the "American Beatle." So this might be the first time that I understood why people who did not grow up with the Beatles do not get the hype...because this was not doing much for me. - There is obviously a lot of craftsmanship and complexity at play here. But I did not find much enjoyable to listen to. - "Without You" is solid. "Jump Into The Fire" was similarly strong, but boy did I feel that seven minutes. - I like weird stuff. But this was too quirky for my taste...apparently I only want my quirky to be British. - The fact that "Coconut" was on the Billboard Top Ten makes me simultaneously proud and disappointed in my nation.

This was fun ish, sounds like something my aunt would listen to

really not my vibe but i could see a beatles lover really digging it

Loads of songs I knew, all bad

He has a great voice but the songs didn't really appeal to me, the album might be to old to resonate with me maybe. Even the "number one song" wasn't something I would listen to again if I had a choice. That might be because the cover seems so much better to me though.

Without you is pretty good, rest of the album is just silly

paar goeie nummers maar zeker ook een paar stinkers.. gaat van 100 naar 0 en terug... enkele keren...

Its fine, the guys voice is good and musically is nice on the ear. It just doesn't evoke any emotion so it gets thrown into the 'boring dad rock' pile.

I'm sorry but this is just not it lol

Couple of good songs

I’m not sure what to think about this. It’s all over the place. Without You is so sappy it’s almost satirical. I actually thought the beyond silly Coconut was written for a commercial. Gotta Get Up is fun. A few other mildly entertaining songs. Just a puzzling album that I could not completely get into.

Ehh, couple of good songs.

You think you’re funny Nilsson? Nilsson Schmilsson??? Really? Actually that’s a pretty good one. Wish I’d thought of that. Anyway this one isn’t it boys

weird.

Felt more like a collection of songs than an album. Some good, some about putting limes in coconuts. 2.5

This was lowkey kinda torture for most of it. Not a fan at all. I didn't know "lime and the coconut" was on this album until I got there, and it was a negative jumpscare.

Meh. Not my genre. Stand-out hit is 'Jump Into the Fire', but I guess I don't really like the slow, chill tempo of the songs listed here. Can see why it is influential, though.

One hit wonder

okay 5/10

ts is mid asl got few goodies ig

Boooring....

Hyvä Laulaja. Myös "eksentrinen" laulelija. Libudibudauchuuuu!! Se oli paras biisi.

If this album got anything right, it was the title. What a boring retread of the 60s. And it gave us the most annoying song? Terrible legacy.

Niektoré dobre ale inak taka nuda trosku

It was short and sweet but the album wasn’t very good.

Nilsson Schmilsson, Meh Schmeh. Nice voice, clean arrangements, has a certain appeal but could've done a whole lot more with what he has than this. Coconut is quirky but doesn't fit the rest of the album. Somewhere between a high 2 and a low 3, he seems to be more famous for his friendships with The Beatles than his work in its own right.

I've owned this record for decades. I pull it out every 2-3 years thinking maybe I'll finaly realize why people seem to like it. Still just sounds like a soulless pop cover band. On the plus side, it is really well recorded.

A little classic old school folk, mixed with a little european.

Really good covers of songs. I have never heard of him, apparently he got drunk a lot with John Lennon back in the day. Anyway, not bad but not sure that I need to listen to it again. If you want to chill out and listen to covers then this would be a great album.

"Without You" is well-known. "Coconut," apparently, is as well. I don't know why.

It’s alright, just sounds very showtuney and musical like sometimes. A few cool songs

Without You is a decent song and Coconut while not bad is not exactly a masterpiece. The rest is mediocre at best with the longer tracks being far too long and irritating. 2 stars because of Without You.

Rating after the weekend is more difficult; I don't quite remember if I wanted this to be 2 or 3 stars. Wasn't the best but wasn't that bad

well, that was a fairly bad time, at least if you're me. coconut has, of course, been a favorite since reservoir dogs resurrected it, and jump into the fire was surprisingly fun. uhhh, also, i was a little surprised to hear the line in gotta get up about how the sailor would come to town, pound her for a couple days and then split. i'm not offended or anything, just surprised that got past whatever decency checks would've still been in place in 1971. anyway, apart from all that, i just can't stand this kinda sickly-sweet stuff. really not for me, sorry harry

Three songs in, this is definitely not my jam. This is the music that you get embarrassed about when your parents sing along to it when your friends are over, especially when they attempt the high notes. Listening to this, it's obvious that The Beatles were an outsized influence and, in the same way that Bush was accused of trying to be Nirvana in the 90s, I imagine Harry was accused of trying to be The Beatles in the early 70s. Okay, so Without You is a good song that I wouldn't mind hearing again. Coconut is silly. Obviously, a recognizable tune but I can't imagine being anything but annoyed by it. It's the kind of novelty song that's inescapable for a summer or so and people sing parts of it in casual conversation like some kind of punchline in and of itself and you kind of smile and hope they stop but don't want them to think that you think that they're being cringey. I would not doubt you at all if you told me it was The Macarena of its time. I skipped it twenty seconds in. Sorry, Harry. So the back half of the album does away with a lot of the sillier bits and is more listenable, if not necessarily memorable. I wouldn't mind having everything that comes after Coconut just playing in the background as something inoffensive and somewhat pleasant to drown out silence while working or eating or something. All that being said: I can see the appeal. I imagine I'd have been more interested in this kind of thing if I'd been around in '71, especially if I'd been in my later 20s or older at the time. These are well written pop songs, they're just very of their time, like a house with wood panel walls and a very Orange/Yellow/Brown color scheme and a shag carpet. It's the best a house could possibly look with that aesthetic, constructed and decorated by the best contractors in town. In many ways it adds polish and flourish to a well worn but still popular style. But it's still a house with wood paneled walls and an Orange/Yellow/Brown color scheme and a shag carpet. Hopefully they're at least holding some wicked key parties in there.

OK, 1-2 good songs but overall it is quite boring. Dated sound..

Ок, но. Лучшая песня - Gotta Get Up.

Boring.

(Not) Elvis

After a couple of really good albums, it was time for Harry Nilsson to cash out. That's what you're listening to here.

This type of Randy Newman cheese pop is just not my thing. I guess it's well written and performed, but I felt nothing while listening to it (other than mild annoyance).

I mean, the cover says it all. The familiar songs are still the familiar songs and the rest is the rest.. Ennui...

No thank you?

It didn't quite match my personal taste, but besides that I don't have much to comment on.

It's inoffensive and decent, good performances all around really. But barely any of it hooked me at all. I can't hate it or even dislike it but I'm just very unaffected by it. Fav songs: - Without You

Boring background music.

I get why he's referred as the US version of Lennon/McCartney. However lyrics are often uninteresting. Without you is really nice

Just so so. Would not listen again by choice.

1. get up - 1 2. driving along - 0 3. morning - 1 4. moonbeam - 1 5. douun - 1 6. uuithout you - 2 7. cocunut - 1 8. good timez - 1.5 9. fire - 1.5 10. leave you - 0 11. eztaz tu - 1.5 12. zure of you - 0 13. moonbeam - 1.5 14. maze - 0 15. zoldier - 0

Nilsson schilsson more like Nilsson make better music, son.

Not a fan but not total crap

No, not for me. Didn't know his name, but I do know 'Without You' - great tune, the only good one on the album though.

Hmm. Ok

Nothing unique or grabby

Didn’t know what to expect here, so went in with a clear mind. Started off thinking it sounded like the kind of thing my Dad would probably listen to (maybe he does) but after a couple of songs I just knew it wasn’t my vibe, though he’s got a nice voice. Without You is a classic and it was nice realising that Coconut was the “put the lime in the coconut” song but I can’t say I’ll probably ever put this on again.

Opens up straight away into something that sounds like it should be in a musical... not a good sign for me. The simple vocal over a reverb-drenched organ definitely creates a cool vibe on Early In The Morning though. Down starts cooking, but still just feels like something is being held back. Oh right... Without You... Followed up directly with Coconut. I feel like this album has officially been weaponized against me now. Hey Harry, did ANYONE ask for a honky tonk version of Let The Good Times Roll? I'm guessing 'No'. Jump In The Fire makes a very solid attempt to redeem this whole affair, complete with a bitchin' drum solo. Definitely the standout banger on here. Probably should have closed out the album with it, instead of the banjo-tinged funeral dirge that was given that honor.

Several hits but not my interesting generally

Thoroughly forgettable, I have 0 intention of ever listening to Nilsson again.

How do you go from "Without You" to "Coconut," this is bonkers. I did like "Jump Into the Fire" and the album art. There's maybe three good songs and then a bunch of snoozes. A lot of it reminds me of kid songs, it's also too schmaltzy. Not a fan of this Harry.

A catalogue of what was wrong with the excesses of the late 1970s.

This album was super annoying

This album held me hostage.

Eww. It's like Paul McCartney but I mean that in the worst way possible. Very corny. 1.54 per track.

Fun, but a little mellow for a jog! Let the good times roll, Coconut, Without You

not my cup of tea, but an interesting album. I liked a couple of songs from the album

mariah carey did Without You better also in 6th grade science one of my friends (gay icon sam thorn) kept singing the coconut song and so another friend finally snapped and said "i'm gonna put your head in a coconut and shake it all up"

Really?

Good opening track didn’t really care for the rest

2.5 I feel like I was just tricked into listening to a Beatles album. Being that this came out a year after their breakup, this guy was clearly taking a page out of their book either for his own personal success or to try and keep Beatlemania alive. And sure enough, after looking him up, the dude was apparently friends with The Fab Four and sometimes even referred to as “The American Beatle”. Well, I definitely hear why that is, but I don’t think he’s really doing anything noteworthy or transformative with their sound. For the most part, it’s innocuous enough to never piss me off, though it definitely feels like he was trying to at times with stuff like Early in the Morning and Coconut. I had no idea the latter was originally by this dude, and while I can admit there’s a certain catch to the song, its charm runs really thin really quickly. Goddamn, sitting here hours later, the song is still stuck in my head, driving me crazy. Is this the reason this album made the list? Not much else of real note. With the exception of Jump Into The Fire, I appreciate him keeping these songs short, though ironically, that ended up being my favorite song on the album and one that I think would have benefited most from having a runtime in the same general ballpark as everything else. Oh well - not a bad album, but pretty gimmicky, and mostly meh. Curious if Beatles fans are a bigger fan of this one.

I guess I prefer my 70's singer-songwriter to be a little more earnest

I thought this was fine

naja..

Hmmm. Some good, some not so good

Amazing, after sooo many years I have learnt the origin of the song KEN LEE. To be perfectly honest, I never looked for it, but to stumble upon it is a pretty good feeling. And suprising thing is - the song is pretty okay, but so different than the rest of the album, which is, simply put, terrible. It felt like I was listening to a parody record and I just weren't in on the joke. But no, it's a serious stuff, just very boring and dated.

I like ballads but this is a bit sappy, eg, The Moonbeam Song. Coconut is just silly. Some of the more rock oriented songs are better like Jump in the Fire, but not enough to save it. Closes with another really slow ballad. Zzz.

Music for dads who don't listen to music. This is what I expect Billy Joel sounds like to people who hate Billy Joel.

скушнявкинс, но коконат забавный

2/5 it was okay. I don’t like the coconut song. Nothing super special to me about this one, it was kinda silly. 2/5

This was okay. Nothing too exciting for me. Recognized a couple songs that didn’t realize were his.

Songs were mid to bad.

so la la

Stopped halfway through. Boring but I liked the third song

Now I know who wrote the Coconut song!

Props for being very talented and interesting. There are some grooves (Let the Good Times Roll) but I can’t say it’s for me. Out of the couple songs I recognized, Mariah’s version of Without You was better (as is Si No Estas Tu), Coconut is better as a Coke commercial since it only lasts 30 seconds and I prefer how The Cars let the good times roll. Also, agree on the 10 pt or half stars. This is prob a 1.5 for me but will save my 1’s for absolute hate. So…is every album from the early 70s?

Not my thing.

LIME IN THE COCONUT JUMPSCARE

Oh, it's THIS guy. I mean sure, it's pretty fun. Without You is iconic and deserves the praise. Jump Into The Fire was a standout track, funky groove and great instrumentals. Subjectively not that enjoyable for me, I don't know what it is too specifically, but something about the mixing leaves much to be desired.

Apart from "Jump Into the Fire", I didn't care for any of these songs.

Bis auf „Without you“ langweilig

I can’t liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiisten to this more than twice. Pretty shit big single aside. Just very run of the mill except the questionable “you put de lime in de coconut” which… I don’t even know.

Known before: Artist/Some songs Standouts: Coconut 5/10

A couple of songs are ok-ish, a few are forgettable, that coconut song is terrible.

I liked Jump into the fire, that's about it. Will I listen to again: 0%

Not quite my thing. Decent easy listening. Small bump for lime in coconut 2.1/5 remastered version 55m

I really can't stand "Without You". It's so schmaltzy and overblown. And Coconut seems a bit racist these days with the fake Jamaican accents. Overall I'd say that something about this album rubbed me the wrong way.

You put da line in da coconut!

Didn't care for it. Sounded like background music made for commercials to me.

not horrible, just not my cup of coffee.

When I first saw the Nilsson Schmilsson I thought it would be completely new to me - but turns out I have heard some of the songs and covers of the song over the years! Sounds like an off-brand Beatles. Not unlistenable but I won’t be listening again! Weirdest track: Coconut

a bit steely dan on first impression? a bit beatles-y, a bit bob dylan (or actually i think i'm just saying that because there was a harmonica on let the good times roll). it's defo steely dan-y though. very 70s. Without You has been memed to death but its hook is so good! i also liked the brass on Down. Jump Into The Fire also good, the textural buildup in the second half made it. otherwise this was a bit meh sometimes (Coconut is strange as fuck it made me very uncomfortable i do not know why). not a particularly memorable album however i really do love the title

A solid enough album knocked down to 2 stars for showing me the origin of the "put the lime In the coconut" line is a fuckin TERRIBLE novelty song

5/5 album cover.

Some good songs, some weird ones (looking at you, Coconut).

Interesting album, not really my cup of tea. Coconut still goes hard.

whatever, man. forgettable

Moyen j'aime pas trop en faite

Lots of different sounds in this album. The origin of "put the lime in the coconut?" Let the good time's roll origin? Favorite song "Jump into the Fire" Worst song "I'll never leave you"

felt scattered no theme, a couple decent ones.

Jump Into the Fire might be fun on a roadtrip, but there wasn’t much for me here in this album. The only song I recognized was Coconut and I found the full-length version very annoying/irritating rather than fun. Forget the bellyache, it makes me feel delirious and weak with fever. Gotta Get Up is not available for me to listen to on Spotify as of Oct. 2023, but I have a feeling I’m not personally missing anything.

C Gotta Get Up 4 Driving Along 2 Early In the Morning 2 The Moonbeam Song 2 Down 4 Without You 3 Coconut 1 Let the Good Times Roll 2 Jump Into the Fire 1 I'll Never Leave You 4 I'm a Harry Nilsson fan, but he's definitely not the most consistent musician. My favorite of his albums is The Point! which is this awesome concept album about this rounded kid Oblio in a pointed world and how he and his dog Arrow get banned from society for being unlike everyone else.

nilsson schmilsson

Kan ikke lide det Without you eller hvad den hed var okay

Well, that wasn’t great.

This was very difficult for me to get through. I did not like the high pitch sounds of the instruments or his voice

Listened to the Grammy winner - Without You. Yuck. Not to my taste.

I wasn't sure if I have ever heard anything from Harry Nilsson, but I had in the back of my mind that he is a songwriter. Hitting the sixth track ("Without You") I knew I was right about the songwriter, even though everything else on Nilsson Schmilsson to that point was new to me. There is some energy on several tracks that I appreciated ("Gotta Get Up", "Let the Good Times Roll", "Driving Along", "Jump into the Fire"). About half of the tracks had a harder time reaching me. These track sounded more like "adult contemporary" which feels like it's written to not ruffle feathers. "Without You" fits solidly in this group. The album for me mostly sits within the "okay" range, but if I have to take the album as a whole, "Without You" and "Coconut" are the album's defining downfall. I have heard "Without You" as performed by Air Supply too many times and did not find a remarkably positive appreciation for the track as performed by Nilsson. "Coconut" on the otherhand feels like it's almost a mockery of the track itself, even though I can't imagine a way in which to perform the track in a straightforward manner. "Coconut" is too silly and feels out of place with the rest of the album. As the second track on side two, "Coconut"'s presence is jarring. Add on the baggage of how pop culture has utilized and referenced this track and the combined weight is too heavy to round up to a 3 star review.

Can definitely see how he influenced the Beatles, too bad I’m not a fan of the Beatles

Not my thing. I’ve never seen the big deal about Harry Nillson. The coconut song has to be one of the most annoying ever though.

"Nilsson Schmilsson" by Harry Nilsson, released in 1971, presents a mixed bag of pop and rock experiments. While it contains the widely celebrated track "Without You," much of the album feels disjointed and boring. Nilsson's vocal prowess is undeniable, but the eclectic mix of styles, from rock to novelty songs, lacks cohesion. "Coconut" and "Jump into the Fire" offer flashes of brilliance, but they're overshadowed by the album's overall lack of direction. "Nilsson Schmilsson" might be a cult classic for some, but it struggles to maintain a consistent quality throughout, leaving it with a feeling of unfulfilled potential.

ništa specijalno, ok je, fino je, but not memorable, tipa 4 ili 5 od 10 imam osecaj da cu zaboraviti i ime pevaca, kao da ga i sad znam ono

it was alright. not really any rememberful moments on this record

OMG Lime in the Coconut song. It has been years since I heard that song. Otherwise the album was good, in line with laidback 70s vibes

*Track 1: Gotta get up* I knew this song from the tv show Russian doll and I recognized coconut too. loved the heavy piano. the upbeat songs were more memorable and I liked them but the slower ballads weren’t as good. i didn’t give my full attention so maybe I missed out on some of the songs.

Una ensalada. Raro disco y se rescata poco.

Songs calculated to send Jacob into a rage

Other than the occasional uplifting bass sequence i did not like this one bit

An album and artist i really want to like, but just don’t. I like his voice and unpretentious persona but the songs do nothing for me.

New artist to me, but the Beatles already did the same thing but better

Ni susta nit gusta

Some recognisable snogs there.

Okay. Alternative/R&B

+ Without You Coconut

Alright, some decent bits

He is a strong composer and performer, no doubt. Some nice songs on this album.

Nilsson Schmilsson. Meh.

I am actually surprised this album has such high ratings… everyone has a different ear for music I guess

It wasn't really my thing, but there were a few songs I thought were cool.

I paid very little attention to this album as I was driving around. Honestly, I was unfair to it. I will give it two stars because nothing stood out enough to catch my attention. That's pretty mean of me! Sorry Harry Nilsson!

The sound of cheese.

Not what I was expecting, but some of it grew on me. Definitely has a Beatles feel to it, and as I read up on the artist, found out that he was very close to the Beatles! It’s a little too pop for me, but I really enjoyed the 3rd song, Early in The Morning, and added it to my favourites list! Also didn’t realize this is the guy that sings “coconut”. That was a shocker when it came out! Apparently this was a fave of my Aunt LuAnn’s. Makes it a little more interesting when you can picture someone you know Jammin to it.

I did not really like this album. None of the songs were very memorable other than the singles Without You and Coconut. It didn't seem to really hit any emotion very well and when it tried to be funny it just came off as awkward. Also the singing in Coconut feels weirdly racist.

"Jump into the fire" is pretty cool, but the rest is a bit meh

Nothing very compelling. It seemed like an average pop album. I give credit for the influence of different cultures on some songs.

Ehh turned it off

Very traditional and too-much-common pop song from the 70s/80s. Maybe he was a pioneer somehow at that time, but today is one of the blandest music I've ever listened to.

Like the The Beatles or Paul McCartney but annoying. Best song: Early in the Morning (I dig the bluesy vibe). Worst song: Coconut (just awful, play on repeat to make your neighbors question their sanity).

I respect him, but I just can’t get into the song writing. Too much like Randy Newman.

this was yucky.

I know this is an important album, and the musicianship is good. Just not my cup of tea. 2

He hung out with the Beatlies ddin't he. So no surprise the best of this sounds like early solo McCartney. The worst of it sounds like....Without You. Being less than generous because that song is unlistenable to, it's a two.

lime in the coconut is from this album lmao didnt really get into the rest of it not even sure how to classify it genre wise

I actually really like his voice, although I think it was much better used on another album – a little touch of Nilsson in the night. My folks had that album and I always liked his vulnerable timbre and that little warble. If that had been the album of choice, I would’ve been a little kinder but I just found this a bit of a bore. It would have been a 2.5, slap bang in the middle, but I’m all Nilssoned out.

(Happy Halloween) You put da lime in da coconut. Don't care. It's boring and I didn't win the Binding of Isaac run I was doing while this was playing in the background. More like Nilsson Smellshit. Ha. Great album commentary as usual. On a more serious note: I don't know about this one. Nothing caught my attention here except for the "Coconut" song, which is a delightful level of stupid that I'm a sucker for. I don't even get the Beatles comparisons.. just because it's pop from the late 60s - early 70s doesn't immediately make this guy the "American Beatles". Also as a sidenote: I wish I got something spookier for Halloween. Y'know? Give me "Tinderbox" by Siouxsie & The Banshees, any Joy Division album.. Or Crazy Frog's 2009 cult-classic "Everybody Dance Now". Now that's a terrifying one.

KEN LEEEEE. Diba diba dout uuu.

I've heard and re-enjoyed "Gotta Get Up". It's a good upbeat song that gets you ready for... not a great album.

Second half is better but don't know why I'd listen to this over dozens of other singer songwriter albums

Didn’t do much for me and Without You made me think of Peep Show, but quite enjoyed the rhythm section and riffs on Jump Into The Fire. That’s about it. Seventies indulgence.

Ken Leeeeeee! tulibu dibu douchoo.

Not bad but not for me

Strange liked the first song the rest was a bit like weird pop. Was ok but never really got there again.

several songs

Another irrelevant album (and a bit cringe with that coconut song) that is here due a single song. This time it ain’t even the original one (this is the second time I encounter such situation during this list). Well, without you is a good song then.

Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: Without You Date listened: 11/04/22 Harry Nilsson seems to have forged a career out of novelty songs and popularising covers of recent minor hits by other artists. 'Nilsson Schmilsson' indeed.

2/5 not good.

Early in the morning

Tuntuu kamalan vanhalta olo kun noi Gotta Get Upin sanat nappaa näin. Early in the morning kans hauska neppailu. Muuten aika meh, ja Coconut on niin ärsyttävä renkutus (ihan sama onko tahallaan)‚ että sakotan yhden tähden. 2/5

Buen disco

I liked (and knew) Without you and coconut. The rest of the songs sound uninteresting and tiring. Kept zoning out and having it as background noise, even if I was actively trying to listen to it.

Coconut was lit, Gotta Get Up was very Russian Doll. 5.5/10 overall.
