Reviews (page 8 of 13)

Neil Young is cool, I always forget but I shouldn't

Admittedly I probably didn't listen to this as closely as I should have. It didn't really catch my attention, but it wasn't bad.

I’ve not generally been a fan of Neil Young but one album on here with Crazy Horse did surprise me so I’m more open minded to him now. “See the Sky About to Rain” is a stunning song and I can really dig the feeling. The next couple of tracks didn’t do much for me, but the title track is great lyrically and again I really like the slow vibe. There’s some nice guitar work here. Not consistent enough for me but 3 stars is a fair rating as I did like a few songs and the general feel.

Damn hippy music

4/10 meh

Didn't recognize anything on it, but still good.

нормальный обычный поп рок 74

Alright

“Let’s go to the beach beach” not bad but the album cover again is throwing me off, it’s not Neil young feeling. The album itself is not bad though.

My rating 3.4. I’m just not a Neil fan. The longer I listen the more I think , ok, but what’s the fuss about????

Love the vibe of this album, sounds like you are sitting in a room listening to then play for you. Pretty boring by the end though. 2.5/5

Aight Fave track: Revolution Blues

I fw some Neil Young. 3.5/5

S’écoute bien (relaxe), mais paroles depress.

2.5/5 - Youngs vocal range can be grating and times. Some of the songs are fun, and worth re-listening to. I can see why fans of his music would probably flock to this album in particular, but to my particular taste, its just.... Fine?

Great background album round the house, so songs that never fail to be relevant even 40 years later

i liked it. i had only heard some song of his and i like the beach country vibes

Even as an unmistakable Blues Jam Skeptic, I've got to say: this kind of mellow, melancholic Blues Jamming is pretty neat. It is oddly comfortable to wallow through the lethargic wastelands conjured up in these songs, but still I've got to admit I prefer Neil's more focused songwriting, and there are at least 5 of his albums I'd rather put on.

yknow i listened to the entire thing and dont remember a damn thing

It was alright. Not my favorite of his albums, but fine.

Some good twangy guitar, good vocals, all in all a nice time. See The SKy About To Rain was really relaxing, with some great guitar work. On The Beach, Motion Pictures, and Ambulance Blues have a nice chill vibe. Best song: See The Sky About To Rain

It's not good Neil it's not bad Neil it's decent Neil. Walk On, Vampire Blues and Ambulance... Blues are the highlights for me.

Neil Young is a great songwriter who has yet to pierce my heart in any meaningful way (or justify SEVEN solo albums on this list.) I love the album cover though, which encapsulates a type of sunny, breezy alienation, like the songs themselves.

Quite good.

Chill folk rock. Sometimes a little boring, but generally pleasant. At times, Neil Young's singing reminds me of Bob Dylan, but I think Young has a better sounding voice. I prefer more traditional sounding folk, so my favorite track would be "For the Turnstiles". A solid album.

just nice!

Never been a fan of Neil Youngs voice. The songs on this record are not bad, but not very good or memorable either.

99/1001 First listen. I mostly know only the hits. I’ll listen again when I’m in a Neil Young mood. Love the title track. 5/10

liked it more than I anticipated.

3.5 marked down

Didn't mind it at the start, but the sound was quite repetitive.

Not my favorite neil young album by far (and I can't wait for them to presumably come). Still the ditch records are pretty good

Too simple for me I mean no songs here are really bad, but they are just too simple and boring for my taste. I mean the outro “Ambulance Blues” are 9 minutes long, but has just a simple guitar groove and a boring atmosphere all the way through. Some tracks like “Walk On”, “Revolution Blues” and “For the Turnstiles” are good but nothing manages to really stand out. Simple music isn’t bad music but in this case there isn’t quite enough going on for me so I’m giving this a 7,5. I recommend this to fans of Bob Dylan and Soft Folk Rock.

It's never a good sign when I forget the album shortly after listening and have to check Spotify to remember if I listened to it.

Neil Young get's personal here. It's hard to say what the overarching theme is here, (if there were one, it would likely be past reflection), but I wouldn't say that's to the album's detriment either. Young has clever lyrics and should be commended for the vulnerability and bluntness he gives. The album itself however is quite slow, even for something under 40 minutes, and many tracks can end up feeling drawn out due to Young's instrumental emphasis, something which I grew to dislike as the album progressed. It's not entirely my cup of tea, but I can see many enjoying this.

Mooi album. Lekker rustgevend. Mooie stem

Love the music, really don’t like Neil young’s voice. Sounds very weak and frail to me, someone who can’t sing at all.

Pretty classic. Wish i could give 3.5 Why do all Neils's have the sauce ?

Okay, but every Neil Young song sounds the same

I like Diamond, but not my favorite stuff

Walk on, Vampire Blues,

This was okay.

Solid sounding album with no real low points. Doesn't quite have the songs for me to love it but liked the vibe and sound of the album. I got notions of Jack White and Beck 'Sea Change' from Neil Young's voice & acoustic style.

ugh I wish I could give it a 3.5, because it's incredibly listenable and sometimes very resonant, but I find it's too indulgent for Young's love of rambling introspective lyrics and looseness of form that ends up being poor man's Dylan

Meh, ha estado bien

Far more enjoyable than I was expecting - when I saw Mr Young pop up again on a rainy Thursday morning I did initially think "Oh God, no, please" but the first few tracks were nice and varied, warm and even playful at moments. The honking guitar tones were a nice touch. Its a relatively short album. Nothing life changing and you generally know what to expect from a Neil Young records. I'm feeling generous this morning so it gets a 3. On another day it may have been a two.

Chill vibes, maar niet echt mijn ding

"walk on" gaf me line dance vibes! de rest was mehhh beetje boring

3 Niet super wauw maar wel gewoon een mooi album

Solid album. Surprised no tracks were bigger in his career. Can't all be Harvest I guess.

Not unlistenable Neil! I am impressed

Realistically this is a strong 3 for me but I also listened to it high while taking a bath, which is i think the most ideal way to listen to it, so a 4 it is! (I found Vampire Blues kind of hard to get into but I now realize it was supposed to be commenting on the oil industry, which is based, but I was too distracted to his silly way of singing I'm a vampiiiirreeee~ i will try to listen again later) Edit: maybe predictably I dont remember like anything from the album and I haven't listened again so thisnis going to a 3

First off, I love the cover! Okay so overall, while there are some really good instrumentals on this album (e.g., guitar in vampire blues for example), overall this album is incredibly slow and not one i would have on repeat. There's definitely something formulaic about the album and it's very country rock/bluesy rock which is not my cup of tea. Also lyrically, some songs are a bit... what? I would give this a 3 star as it didn't irritate me as much and does make for some good background chill listening. It's a vibe.

I've never heard of this album so wasn't quite sure what to expect. Was not expecting such a folky record but I think I like it. A nice change from the last Neil Young album I listened to. Favorites: Revolution Blues, For the Turnstiles (love the banjo) Would I listen to it again: Probably

Beautiful album. The electric guitar in this was phenomenal.

Neil Young definitely sounds better with a stripped back instruments, maybe even just a banjo. So aside from the opening track, I think that hit the mark. Not a huge fan of his voice generally but appreciated it enough that I enjoyed two straight listen-throughs.

I wasn't sure I had ever heard any of this, although I had been meaning to for years. Then "Walk On" jumped out of the speakers and I recognized it within the first two chords. What a fabulous opening. From there on in it's mostly dark and edgy blues-by-numbers, often interminable and sometimes sleepy. Although I shouldn't complain too much because the most standard issue song here ("Vampire Blues") was for me the best of the bunch. "For The Turnstiles" gave me chills, and reminded me that this is one of Jason Molina's favorite albums. Oddly enough, I'd much rather listen to Songs:Ohia than old uncle Neil most days. The album isn't so much uneven as it wore me down by the second listen. Very hard to rate something that starts so strong, is so influential and well beloved, but is in the end kind of meh.

Alright. His voice is quite whiney and annoying . The sad songs at the back end were good.

On the Beach is equal parts bluesy and folksy, carried by a deliberately low-energy atmosphere that can feel almost drowsy at times. Wistful harmonica lines drift over sedated acoustic guitar and banjo, reinforcing the album’s weary mood. Neil Young’s vocals are restrained and deliberate, delivered with a calm that feels less like comfort and more like quiet resignation.

Melancholic just the way I like em

3.4/5 12:20pm Sounds like something Kidist would like. Definitely has more potential with more listens. Will report back after my second round. It's good, I will have to circle back.

Didnt listen enough. Nothing stood out

Whelming album. I do like Neil Young and to be fair I think his music is the sort to build appreciation of over many listens, but I'm a braindead zombie zoomer (zoombie?) with no time nor attention span. fav tracks: See the Sky About to Rain, Vampire Blues

Dull and repetitive but not unpleasant. Background music for Boomers.

This was definitely a good listen, It wasn't too boring but idk if I have any stand out favs yet. I did like the oldy rock feel it had. ( Don't crusify me idk music terminology) It was jolly and had some of that layering I like you know. I should probably go back and give it another shot later on

Another solid Neil Young album but probably not what I’d reach for from the 2 I’ve heard on this challenge or the other ones I already know… at least off the back of one listen. It is one to explore further though, perhaps we need a Young Discogs!

Hard to beat 70’s Neil. I prefer the live version of these songs more though.

I’m a vampire baby 🧛‍♀️ is an all time great. Plenty of snoozers to go around on this album too tho.

Huge respect of Neil but this is not for me i think. But good album anyways.

I liked the novel "On the Beach" better

Good vibe. Great guitar 🎸

How many Neil Young albums must I listen to before I die?

Quite depressing for an album called "On the Beach"

I couldn't get into this; it just didn't make me enthusiastic about listening to the whole thing because these days this kind of American folk rock isn't very interesting to me. Admittedly I've never gotten into any Neil Young since I was super into "After the Gold Rush" when I was in 9th grade. So this is well done for what it is, I think, just not for me these days. If it were playing in a coffee shop I wouldn't leave to get away from it, but I'd probably complain about the place afterwards like "well yeah the espresso drinks are good but the last time I was there all they were playing was all this sleepy Neil Young stuff." Three stars

Another Neil Young album. Young is never the artist I'm in the mood for, but I'm never upset when he comes up. This one was alright. Very intrigued by the story on the album art. What the hell even happened there? Key tracks: See the Sky About to Rain

Just can’t get on with Neil Young’s voice. Music is great, But vocals are not for me 3/5

I wanted to rate it higher because it’s Neil Young but it was just alright

My God how many albums has this man made? Or rather how many of his albums are on this list? To be fair I actually quite like Young and his ramblings and this is one of his better efforts!

Betydligt luftigare än förra albumet med Young. Gillar country-influenserna.

Neil and his janky voice. I am mostly a fan, so have high expectations. At least it's not a live album. What would he sound like in the Age of Autotune? Listened before? N Saved some tracks? N Favorite tracks? For the Turnstiles, ⭐⭐⭐ Liked it well enough

haven't listen to it

This is #day478 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… by now, I've had two Neil Young & Crazy Horse records, one Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and now a Neil Young solo record. If you ask me whether I can always tell them apart… well, I don't really. Anyway, this is a revisit review after Tonight's the Night, and despite the vocals, I'm actually kind of fine with the bluesier side of the record, even if I'm not quite buying the country side of it. Let it be a 3 out of 5 this time. Looking forward to #day479.

Far better than I expected as I usually don’t like his yowl

Based on the album title you’d think this was a light, airy album, but the name is a misnomer, On The Beach, is dark, angry but slow and quiet. Young is at his best angry and loud in my opinion so the album falls slightly flat. 7.7/10

Okay for a neil album. Not his best and not by far his worst. Just overall okay, rich and warm melodies contrasted with Neil's sharp vocal styling.

So far the first song "walk on" is my favorite but I do really like the sound of this album- nothing has jarred me yet. Kind of a short album but it was an ok listen. 3/5 because I liked the vibes

I had not heard any of these songs...

some solid stuff. coupla nice melancholic road trip sounds

This was very much just fine. Feels better than a 2. I did like the use of strings in ambulance song and the banjo and vibe of Turnstile song. This is my third Neil Young in three weeks. He’s fine but I don’t see what’s so great.

OK, I'm about Neil Young'd out. (This is the third NY album we've had, and all fairly recently.) I liked the opener ("Walk On")! And the second song too. It appears that 1974 is my personal sweet spot for Neil Young. Musically, a lot of this reminds me of what Dylan was doing around this same time, which of course makes sense. It also reminds me of MJ Lenderman, who I've been listening to a lot lately. Similar vibe. I like this more than Ragged Glory, which I also gave a 3 but was more of a 2.5. This is a 3.5.

Not my favorite work of Neil Young. It takes a lot of talent to overcome his whiney voice. 2.5/5

Not a Neil Young fan but this was enjoyable

3.25/5 Even though this is now considered Dad rock (like a lot of classic rock from the 60s/70s) - I still mostly liked it. I prefer the jam-session/bluesy/rock songs the most. Some of the folk songs are a little tough. Yeah, Neil Young can sound whiny & drugged up. Though sometimes that actually works? Top Tracks: -Revolution Blues -On the Beach

Pretty well written folk songs but his performances don't really add anything meaningful to them

Chill vibe 🌊

Perfectly pleasant listening

Neil dies an album, people love it. It's not Harvest tho.

it was fine. it was just more Neil Young.

I like this album from the couple of listens I have given. Is it slow at points? Yes. It is also a darker album from him. If these do not suit your style, you really might not enjoy it. Walk On doesn't seem to fit the rest of the album to me for some reason, but its good enough. Revolution Blues, and For the Turnstiles feel most immediate and they are fun to listen to. This one begs for additional listens.

Not bad but not really good. One song sounds like Ohio.

It's ok, a bit over 3 but not a 4.

Honestly not peak Neil Young for me, but still really good.

“(Heart of gold) put me in the middle of the road Traveling there soon became a bore, so I headed for the ditch. A rougher ride but I saw more interesting people there." Interesting take on success! Such an iconic and recognizable voice. Loved the harmonica in See the Sky About to Rain, need to bust mine back out again.

It’s ok

Folk county rock. Reminiscent of his other stuff but no standouts.

pretty good, but i prefer after the gold rush. this one was a bit more relaxed and polished.

its okay

Not a highlight Neil record, but thoroughly enjoyed. I love For The Turnstiles sung by Be Good Tanyas. Now I know the original.

I love Neil Young. I was in the Young camp during the arbitrary Young vs Dylan battle that went around my high school - now I'd pitch my tent in both. Admittedly this is an album I hadn't listened to much. It has the great characteristic Young tape warp - is this a demo lo-fi feel of 70s Young. Good tunes, it doesn't speak to me like Tonight's the Night and After the Goldrush do but maybe I've forgetten a few of my tent poles. Highlights: The two 'blues' tracks are good, though the questionable practice of white musicians playing the blues or just ripping off blues artists hasn't aged too well. Neil's isn't tooo agregious if that is any consolation. I love the strained, slightly out of tune vocals, guitar and slide guitar on For The Turnstiles. Lowlights: See the sky about rain

I found it hard to rate this album, it’s somewhere between a 3 and a 4. Apart from Mirrorball, I’d not listened to any Neil Young albums before this process, however, this is the 3rd album I’ve been dealt (the other 2 with Crazy Horse). I enjoyed this more than Rust Never Sleeps but not as much as Ragged Glory. Repeated listens would no doubt help here and I’d be open to returning when I get the chance.

3.7 really enjoyed

How'd that car get under the sand like that?

I pretty much only enjoy country/folk rock when it’s closer to rock. This album leans a lot more into its singer-songwriter side and is more calm and relaxed than Harvest, for example. Not my favorite style, but it definitely isn’t bad. When there’s more rock elements, it’s kind of good, otherwise it’s just meh.

Started off so strong with the first few songs but petered out by the end.

Solid. Not my favorite Neil Young.

Really liked it. Should probably listen to some more Neil Young.

It’s aight. We’ll see. It’s nice but we’ll see. It was aight.

It's not bad. Neil Young isn't the most gripping artist, but this one isn't bad. I didn't get to listen as intently as I'd wished, but it's ok. I may try and go back to it.

ok, better than the other one

I really like Walk On

Decent.

Not bad, kind of relaxing. Not really my jam though.

Solid! Liked the music but none really stuck with me

When I listen to Neil Young on the radio I am generally annoyed and change the song but somehow listening to his full albums I have a different reaction and enjoy him a bit more. Can't quite explain why but here we are.

There is so much nesl on the list. It’s frankly outrageous

Fine little album. Some songs though, especially the closer, went on for a little longer than I would have hoped.

something very nostalgic about this. like an ending or a montage theme song.

Iha jeba

Never done Neil Young really before, like robert plant and a more folky Led Zep. Enjoy.

Similar to the first Neil Young album I got in this generator, this one was half good. In this case, however, it was the first half of the album that really shined. Starting at For the Turnstiles it starts to get a bit weak and the tracks either have very pitchy vocals or drag too long. A middle of the road album gets a middle of the road ranking for me.

Good album. Feel like some of the songs meandered a bit too much but still made for good accompaniment to my commute home. 3.5/5

I don't know about this one. I like a lot of Neil Youngs shit but this one was kinda meh. It's my 3rd or 4th Neil album so far and he's very hit or miss. I got his greatest hits cd many years back and I'll probably stick with that for the most part.

Enjoyable but kind of boring. Nothing really notable on the album

There is nothing essentially wrong with this album. There’s a few nice blends of different genres that all create a comfortable, unchallenging vibe. Perfectly serviceable background music. A bit unfortunate to have this on the back of Tea For the Tillerman and only 6 albums beyond the previous Neil Young album. I’m not sufficiently clued up to know which Neil Young albums best warranted inclusion but that’s too quick a turnaround!

Again!! I really like the musicians I just find some offence with the vocals. I dont care if the lyrics are profound, artistic, shakespearean or whatever. His voice just pisses all over the musical fire. Can somone just re-do all these albums just without Neil singing. Find someone else please. I mean how much better does a song need to be "Vampire Blues" is great.

Probably the best Neil Young album so far, musically. I liked the slow bluesy vibe. I still find his voice annoying and there is too much Neil Young on this list.

I think his voice is not my favorite. Lots of gems and good turns in the lyrics but not entirely my speed.

A bit melancholy for me

Not his best, but it’s still Neil Young

I've never been a Neil Young fan, but I liked this album. After reading the Wikipedia about it, maybe I prefer the stripped-down, less produced version of Young this album captures. And normally I wouldn't be psyched for a nine-minute album closer, but "Ambulance Blues" is great. It's a new day, y'all.

Slightly depressing, nothing outstanding, vocal is hit and miss. 2.5/5. Raising to 3.

Favourite track(s): Walk On; See The Sky About To Rain; On The Beach Great opener, with anthem potential! Overall, the instrumentals paint the melancholic mood of the album really well, although I could do without the one on Ambulance Blues. For The Turnstiles also sticks out in a negative sense. Youngs vocals can be harsh on that track and a few others but otherwise fit the mood. The texts range from interesting (Revolution Blues) to painfully simple (Vampire Blues - oil, we get it). A clear vibe, a few really strong tracks but in parts a little too meandering (in particular the closing track). An album strongly tied to a particular locale, which may make it hard to identify with.

Starts off a bit dull, but picks up during Revolution Blues. Still a couple of generic moments after that, but also some great stuff, like the title track. Peaks at a four, but because it’s a bit uneven… 3/5

Could see it becoming one of my favourites of his with some instant classics Second and third song stand out immediately. Second half of the album slower burn will have to listen again. Enjoyed it a lot though. Think he has one of my favourite voices ever.

3.4/was chill

Started out really good, very upbeat jolly music. An total to contrast to yesterday's Nick Cave contribution in every way. It tailed off towards the end unfortunately which was a shame. His voice was more consistent than on his other entries which helped. Hadn't heard any of the the songs before, which sort of begs the question why is it here? As it didn't have the aspect of a landmark album. But I enjoyed it. Is it worth a 4? No, but it is a very high 3.

Felt a little at times like this was a contractual obligation. Some tunes were better though

Another mixed bag of songs. His vocals were considerably better than the last album we had and he clearly writes some good songs, with the upbeat ones being the best here. However, there are some duds on here and the country twang present throughout really annoyed me.

I like Neil a lot. I recall Dad playing Harvest a lot when I was young, and I discovered Neil's harder side in college. I've bought a lot of Neil's albums, but I hadn't listened to this one. I enjoyed this, especially the second half. But it's not an album I needed to hear before I die. 3 stars.

It’s really not great, but not bad because it’s Neil young.

Good, Not my favorite Neil Young

This is a raw & emotive album full of folk rock songs that I largely enjoy. Ultimately though it also feels a little disjointed in parts and folk is never going to be my favourite genre. A good album but not one to remember.

Day 70 First listen- An enjoyable album, the tracks really pulled me in and the melodies in some tracks were soothing and I love his lyricism. (3.5/4)

This was a listenable album. See the Sky About To Rain, For the Turnstiles, and Motion Pictures were the most interesting songs for me. You can enjoy however every song on this album and not feel bored. Neil Young does have better albums, namely After The Gold Rush, which leaves an impression.

Cool cover. Songs didn’t do much for me personally.

The thing is, there are actually some decent songs but his voice does them absolutely no favours. They could make some banging cover versions though

In this album, and ably assisted by his so-called ‘honey slides’, Neil Young captures the difficult to achieve and even more difficult to maintain state of “being body stoned to a biblical degree but still coherent enough in thought to have a pop at Big Oil.” And, as per usual, it’s really good. “See the sky about to rain” is just as sweet and whimsically melancholic as you’d hope from its title, while the various “… Blues” (Revolution, Vampire, Ambulance in order) make for a powerful triptych of attitudes – folk’s own Garden of Earthly Delights. A record that demands you nod along, and for a number of reasons.

Liked the blues-iness of this and generally enjoyed it musically, but it feels like something I'd need to give closer attention to to really appreciate.

I've been listening to Neil Young since the early 90s and at almost no point in that run have I been able to get past his voice (give or take a song here or there, e.g. "Cinnamon Girl.") Which is a shame cause there's a ton of good stuff throughout his catalog. His lyrics are profound. The music is urgent and thoughtfully crafted, even in the folksier corners that I'm usually allergic to. I *want* to love him and there are plenty of other lead singers with nasal, kind-of-annoying voices that I love. So what is it about Neil Young that cuts me off at the pass? Anyway, I never got to a point on On The Beach where the music was so good that I didn't focus on his voice. "Revolution Blues" came closest.

Another album of Neil Young bangers. Second album of his I’ve reviewed following Harvest. I may even like this album more than that one. Maybe. I gave it a 3.9/5, and I’m going to give this one the exact same rating. It’s really good, still a ton of fun Harmonica riffs, and a solid measure of pretty Rock songs vs jamming Rock songs. As close to a 4 star album as you can possibly get. The song “Revolution Blues” is my favorite song on the album, and it’s really not even close. That song absolutely makes the whole album, and without it I think this would fall to about a 3.4 or a 3.5. That being said, I still don’t think this album has a bad song, I just like that one that much more than the rest. This is something I’m actually likely to return to, and some other songs like “For The Turnstiles” are good enough to make the rotation of songs I frequently listen to. Great job with this one Uncle Neil.

Has rich metaphorical value that I enjoyed. I think it was quite impressive however, i did not enjoy some of the songs

It’s alright. As always, don’t love Young’s voice, but there’s a lot of great guitar work and writing in there.

This is about the same as any other Neil Young album. Pretty boring with a couple solid songs

Not bad

Sparky start. I wanted more grit, less gloom. It's my birthday. How many "blues" songs do we need? Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - Walk On - See The Rain In The Sky - Revolution Blues

Some decent folk melodies with a few tracks I wasn't a fan of. Nothing offensive, nothing truly standout, so a 3 seems about right

Very unforgettable. Honestly don’t remember a single thing about it. I didn’t actively dislike it though

Though there’s a simplicity on this album, character is in the songwriting, conviction in the composition. There’s a rawness. Musicians just making music. The vocals sound bleak, rugged, emotional—wry and bitter at times. It pulls me in and makes me feel indignant, like maybe there ought to be a chip on my shoulder. Using unique sounds for atmosphere is very effective on this record. Organ on “Vampire Blues,” Wurlitzer piano on “On the Beach,” djembe, slide guitar, harmonica, fiddle create textures that feel intimate and stirring. Guitar solos on “On the Beach” was the best moment on the album for me. The record is kinda a downer, but I enjoyed it. There’s not really any hits, but the longer it went, the more I just felt it. Musicians just making music. I’m torn on what to rate it. I’m not sure how often I’ll revisit it, but I am glad I heard it. 7/10 Standouts: Walk-On On the Beach Ambulance Blues

pretty good album i liked it. Not the style i would usually listen to. honestly kinda sad lmao

Cover 6.5 Uh... First heard Neil Young in the 90s when I was in highschool. I hated his voice. FUCKING HATED it. So, after 35 or so years of not even giving him a shot, this comes up, my first Neil Young album. I braced myself and got some tissue in case my ears started to bleed. His voice is not great. When people who can actually sing cover one of his songs, that's basically how I prefer my Neil Young, interpreted through a lesser-grating, non-whiny, non-nasally voice. But listening to this, I actually didn't mind it as much. Granted I'm older and my hearing isn't what it used to be. In the end, Not As Grating on My Ears as I Thought It Would Be.

I’m more familiar with Neil Young’s Harvest. On the Beach doesn’t reach its heights. On the other hand, there’s nothing here as, well, odd as a couple of Harvest’s tracks (e.g., the orchestra appearing out of nowhere). On the Beach is steady and solid. I still prefer Harvest.

70s folk rock.

I liked it

Decent

I really like Neil Young but this record was just OK for me. It felt a little bit too much of his formulaic singer-songwriter classic rock with the same blues chord progression and after a handful of the songs it became too repetitive. It was hard for me to get past this repetitive composition device, but I could look at it after finishing the album and realize that there are some standout moments in here.

Solid album with a couple of classic tracks.

Was mainly in the background. I love Neil Young. Album certainly deserves to be on the list.

I like Neil Young quite a bit, but mainly Harvest and some of the newer hits. I struggled to get into this, perhaps it's one you need to study the lyrics on. I know it is considered one of his best. I'll keep listening!

Nice album, not the best Neil Young I have heard

It's Neil Young so its good, but isn't really my jam, still saved a few songs though.

Was ok, not blown away however

Walk On - Nice; very easy-going and sort of nostalgic. I like "Some get stoned, others get strange". See the Sky About to Rain - absolutely gorgeous - so sweet and wistful. Revolution Blues is fun. I like the riff and the contemptuous way he sings "I'm a barrel of LA-AFFS" On the Beach - pretty dull verses, but the instrumental bit is good. Motion Pictures (For Carrie) - very sweet and wistful - love the harmonica. Ambulance Blues - again, very sweet and wistful. Nice end to the album.

Solid album chill and short, rly liked title track and see the sky about to rain

Very bluesy and quite melancholy, some cool uses of the guitar Fav: see the sky about to rain. A bit eerie in how it preempts the darkness to come

Country?

Pretty bland overall, but not bad

cool and bluesy but im not a huge fan of folk rock

I kind of struggle with Neil's music. Like I feel that there's something there that could interest me but now a few albums in of his, I'm not sure his stuff is really for me. I can respect it, but I wouldn't say I loved it nor hated it. 6/10

just about a great album very chill but never boring

This one started off strong, and I thought this would be a 4 star album. It's still a strong album, but to me Neil Young straddles being earnest, soulful, singer / songwriter with coming across whiney. A couple of these songs tipped too far into the whiney to award 4 stars.

The 1001 has made me an early Neil Young fan. That said, I don’t know if this album qualifies as a “must listen”. My imagination suggested that good Ol’ Neil was exhausted after six years of straight touring so he got a kilo of anything off the Cheba Hut menu and went to Jimmy Buffet’s beach, and this album metastasized. It’s a solid mid-level album: not bad, not particularly memorable, just a solid listen in a non-listen way. On the Beach is a great example. It very bluesy and laid back but lacks any specific climactic point. Vampire Blues (one of three songs with ‘blues’ in the title) was tongue-in-check humor that is probably funnier on the beach with Neil. This one is listenable but not a vinyl priority.

Random thoughts: * Another Neil Young album!!! * This was a good listen. It's pretty chill and no hit songs really jump out here. * Vampire Blues and Revolution Blues were fun. * Walk On might be the most upbeat song on this one. * I'd need to listen more and I'm sure there would be more to discover. Someday I might start a Neil Young phase.

Classic Neil Young but nothing special stands out

You know what you’re getting with Neil… it’s the same and yet comforting. I don’t know that I need to listen to seven albums that hit the same notes and frequency but there we go. Not quite Harvest or After the Gold Rush - I might have just stuck to those two. But this is solid fayre!

This was rather good, and I'm not the biggest Neil fan. I hadn't heard any of these before and I liked all of them. But holy hell, there are 7 Neil Young albums on here. I mean, come on. The dude's good and all, but it's not like this one is all that different from his others. So, minus a star. It's not his fault, but still.

Yes, a slow burner I think (though I listenes 1.5 times). The two songs with "blues" on the title plus "On the Beach" my highlights though also the wnd of the disc was nice. 9 songs. Maybe I will listen again. My first Neil Young Album.

I love Neil. His voice feels comforting and familiar. This was a brand new listen for me, I should put on more of his albums in the background on a casual afternoon.

It's fine.

Not Neil's strongest work, but still passable. It's his late work that becomes truly unlistenable. Hope that the best albums are also on this list 👍

good sounds, especially when we talk about folk rock, again one song is outstanding bonus for the album cover

4th Neil Young album... But it’s all right. This one was actually good. Not fantastic – I doubt I’ll ever use that word to describe a Neil Young album – but quite enjoyable, at least. I really prefer Neil Young when he does country-blues or country-rock instead of just pure country (or worse, nasal whiny ballads), so this album was right up my alley. All the "blues" track, and especially Revolution Blues and Vampire Blues, were pretty cool, and On The Beach was a superb song. Still not my kind of music, probably won’t listen again, but I had good time reviewing it.

This album was mostly easy-listening background music for me. I like the harmonica, I like the bluesy rock elements mixed with the country elements. There's some sweet guitar on here. Some of the songs I didn't love, like "For the Turnstiles", but others like "On The Beach" I really liked. "Walk On" was a jam. The rest of the album was different from this song. I loved the riffs. The album was very low key in the back two thirds and didn't really keep my attention. It was really nice background music though. I feel like maybe I'm being a bit harsh with a six. Maybe on a day where I'd paid more attention it would be a seven, but today is not that day. 6/10

cool album art but pretty ok overall

Boring, still Neil Young, but boring

Didn’t enjoy the experience of this all the way through

I like

Had a few tracks that might stick with me but the others were kind of a drag.

meh, einziges lied das ich mochte war walk on. ansonsten eher mittelmäßiger 70s rock was nicht schlecht ist aber auch nichts was man unbedingt hören muss

Whiny folk singing interrupted by moments of boomer rock brilliance.

Hadn’t heard this one straight through before, but of course had a song or two. Neil Young is always Neal Young… just is what he is. Some bluesy numbers. Solid, but not the pinnacle of Neil Young.

I thought this album was good, though it didn’t blow me away. Again the rating system on this website is too limited, so I’d maybe say it’s a strong 7 on a first listen. I think the magic of Neil Young’s music is usually in the lyrics, and for whatever reason his lyrical stuff doesn’t hit me until subsequent listens. Maybe this will improve in my mind as time goes on.

Typical Neil Young. Not bad . 3 stars

Has its place. No stand out tracks and as an album hangs together well.

J - 3/5 Best Track - "Walk On" F - DNL

I did not use a private spotify session for this one. Very moody music, not on the beach mood, maybe sitting on the prairie watching the prairie dogs, while wondering if this life is still worth living. It's not bad, just won't make it on rotation.

Was fine, nothin crazy. Short album so didn't get too repetitive. Best song: Walk On Notable(s): Vampire Blues

Meio melancólico, mas é Neil Young!

Not the best Neil Young has made, but definitely worth hearing.

I first heard this album years ago. Possibly around the time it was released on CD, and I hated it. In the intervening years, I have tried it a couple of times and it has grown on me. It’s very much a “be in the right mood” album. It’s not background music, it’s music to turn in on yourself with. Sitting down and actually listening to it today, I think I appreciate it a bit more for what it is. It’s the sound of a disappointed man reaching his breaking point. It’s rough around the edges which adds to the rawness of the emotions he is channelling, but it’s still a very consistent chill album. On The Beach (track) goes on a bit too long for me, and the low-fi mood continues throughout side two. I enjoyed side 2 less, and got shades of Sister Morphine by the Stones from Ambulance Blues. Including the length. Overall, it’s a bit of a mixed bag for me. It starts off well, but loses me at the end.

Actually been a while since we've had a Neil Young album and this one started off great. I was thinking it was going to be my favorite from him. It actually seemed a little poppy, which I liked. Then it morphed into just another Neil Young album like the other 25 of them on the list.

Starts out very well with two amazing songs. annnnd the rest is fine. He really loves a song with blues in the title huh. it was great and then it turned into a neil young album

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Beating a dead horse, but there’s no reason for this many Young albums, especially with how little variety there is between them

funky. wanna play this in the beach for sure

I didn't know this album. Nice

Another Young again ??? This one’s better produced, Neil’s whinny voice works well and the electric blues tracks like Revolution Blues and Walk On are really cool. The ending gets a bit too emotional for my taste, though I enjoyed a lot Vampires blues and On the beach. Nice overall, deep, not necessarily a masterpiece, but Young never really tried to make one,

Really good, love starting off with that quintessential California sound. Nothing stood out enough for me to be returning to this album but happy I listened.

Fin og nærværende lille sag. Jeg nappede den i et lyt som bare føltes helt rigtigt!

6/10 Favorite: Walk On

I liked the start but I got a little bored by the end Will I listen to again: 25%

Great set of folk country tracks, with every track containing a poignant commentary on some aspects of the state of Young's life at the time. That said while quite enjoyable, there is not much in the way of standout tracks or tight cohesion that would elevate this record, making it enjoyable but not an exceptional listen to those not absorbed in Young's self mythology

This is now Neil Young's 4th album in this project. When I heard it yesterday, I thought it wasn't that bad. Today I can't remember why I thought that. It doesn't seem to have made much of an impression on me. 3/5

Ok, not my thing but can appreciate the music.

Lacked the variation of his later albums

High: Motion Pictures Nothing stood out for a low.

I liked listening to Neil Young, didn't recognize any of the songs but I've got a few new go tos for chill listening days! Didn't care much for the second half of the album, but hoping to have another neil young album to explore in the future

I didn't think I'd enjoy this album but it's actually pretty good

oh, well, I think he's done much better on other albums, such as the live record rust never sleeps.

3 stars. Kinda sounds like a great album, but I'm not sure any of it is about anything. Just some jammers jamming and a guy singing - Dad rock. But not in a bad way I guess... - I feel like this has all the pieces of a good album, but underneath the surface it's actually pretty garbage

Not my favorite Young. Doesn’t have the oomph of some of his best. 3.5 Stars

I've been mostly a superficial Neil Young fan. Love his hits, singles and well known stuff. This album had none of that but it was still an enjoyable listen. Love that the album cover and name is juxtaposed with lyrics about alienation and sorrow and filled with pretty down beat songs.

Enjoyed this. It wasn't amazing but ill probably listen to it again.

I liked it a lot more than expected

Enjoyable - easy breezy. feels like it could be a grower highs: on the beach, motion pictures lows: none

it wasn’t bad, i listened to it on the way work while driving next to the beach so it kinda matched the vibe. would hear it again

I really enjoyed some of the songs, especially the ones that were more upbeat and had a faster pace. Sometimes his voice sounded a bit shrill or the songs were slow and a bit boring, but overall I enjoyed the sound.

A pretty poignant day, so unsure how much that is influencing it but ‘Walk Away’ felt like the perfect opener for the day and lyrics so resonate and fitting (23/6/25). Loved the soul, lyrics and heart in ‘On The Beach’ (song) and felt a solid collection of songs, with a nice flow throughout. Helpful to know about the ‘Ditch Trilogy’ and makes sense of a lot of the themes and lyrics. The decline, isolation and existential themes throughout, as well as some more upbeat tunes and reflections. However, feels like the mood and sentiment declines as the album progresses. And maybe capturing of the journey, and also interesting the order was reversed on other editions (3.5)

Definitely not as good as his work with crazy horse but this was still quite enjoyable. It started off with a very catchy opening and basically went into a very bluesy guitar focused theme with folk and country aswell. A lot of it was a bit generic or just outright not good (for the turnstiles for example) but on the beach really stood out to me, it’s 7 minutes long and it felt very pink flloydy to me, it’s hard to explain but it’s the way the his vocals are and the drums, it kind of sounds like a song from wish you were here. After that though a more mellow folk song and then an 8 minute bluesy track which was quite a nice closer. Favourites: walk on and on the beach. Overall, 6/10.

His voice is kinda eh but i can dig it. Surprisingly bare feeling, after all these albums with so many harmonies. This is a guy in his yard on a campfire thats kinda annoying about stuff

Liked "See the Sky About to Rain," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues." Enjoyable, but likely won't return to it.

I’d never heard this Neil Young album before. I’ll need to listen to it again to rate it any higher than a 3 though, wasn’t paying attention enough to the lyrics. But it’s not Harvest.

It's fine I guess 2.5

i liked the tracks the further into the album i listened. favorites = on the beach, motion pictures (for carrie)

An enjoyable listen, mellow tunes.

I didn't mind it

Enjoyable, well presented, but slightly unremarkable.

Lagom Neil Young bara. Någon bra låt. Lite gnällig. Hmm.

Really enjoyed this one, the opener is a real head swaying bop of a folk rock song. The harmony vocals in the chorus between the hits of guitar over the kick drum hit so hard. The little break before the second verse is exceptionally good. Love the wurlitzer and slide guitar on the second track, theres a bit around 50 seconds where they play together in such a satisfying way. Then the closing three tracks are a real nice string of slower paced songs that just have this lovely heavy drift to them, you just get lost in the worlds they create. Will definitely be listening to this again in the future. Favourites - Walk On, See the Sky About to Rain, On the Beach, Motion Pictures (For Carrie), Ambulance Blues

Meh. Didn't feel like I was on the beach

See the sky about to rain - nice song Revolution blues - Nice guitars Motion pictures - nice harmonica

Not my favorite Neil Young record, but it's not bad.

I know he’s a titan and it’s a well made record but too depressing for me to listen too often

Just such a vibe

Nice easy listen, enjoy the songwriting a good amount, folklore-heavy and metaphorical. I think the blues cuts are by far the strongest in the album, however, with some great, simple, and more recognisable lyrics and production choices. I don’t see why the album is called ‘On The Beach’ either, considering it isn’t a very summery or upbeat album; maybe that’s the irony! The title track, however, is phenomenal and the drum production on it is really satisfying. Still, somehow my first introduction into Neil Young’s prolific catalog, but I feel he has way better out there for me to try.

Helt okej, kände inget wow men kan tänka mig att den skulle växa på mig om jag lyssnar fler gånger.

Hate the voice, but like the songs. And the rough production.

Listened before?: No Good but not entirely memorable.

Oh, Neil Young. CSN&Y meant so much to me growing up. But I just don’t vibe with your solo stuff. I see the songwriting prowess; the sound does nothing for me though.

The album grew on me as it progressed. The last two tracks were lovely. I found some of the album unmemorable. 3.5/5

Who knew the beach could be such a sad and lonely place?

One of, if not the, first grunge albums. Dark and heavy - especially the lyrics. Would be insanely better on vinyl. Still, not even Uncle Niel's best work. 2.5

Bra, men litt ujevn. (Some mange Neil Young album er).

Glad i han Neil. Lenge siden sist med denne plata. Jo, noe blues her også. Tittellåta er blant mine favoritter.

The title track is beautiful. Definitely adding this album to the rotation.

first listen music 4 voice 3

Ok album, uten at jeg blir helt revet med. Er ikke så glad i vokalen til Young. Fungerer best på tittelsporet.

Good! 3, not what I would automatically put on, favourite song: vampire blues!

i love the music. cheery beats. Creative song names. I honestly didn’t expect to like this album cause it’s so old, but the guitar is too good.
