I found the title track but couldn't find the album. The song was fine.

Really not my thing. There's some good moments and I did like H2O Gate Blues. The delivery is passionate and the piano is great. Just not for me.

Not bad album at all. Reminds me of some of the earlier jazz ones we've had. I had to listen to this on YouTube, so I got the full album experience - I had no idea when the songs changed and that was probably for the better. Jazzy but still not my thing 4/10

It was a groovy journey with a few tracks that rose above. Bit too much flute for my taste!

Too slow, uninteresting

An interesting and probably more popular in its release time than now kind of album. Gil seems to be the kind that likes to speak melodically to various piano and flute tunes. Some of his singing is really good. The yazz flute gets a little tiring but the piano is good. I feel this album would be better if it was just a more jazzy r&b style but that’s now. The 70s trends were different. 5.0/10

Just so not my thing. I appreciate the influence it has had, but as I don't like jazz and I don't like rap, it's just not for me. It seems that the beauty of this album is 99% the lyrics, and I don't really care for lyrics that much.

Fuck this album for not being on Spotify but that being said it felt a lot like the Marvin Gaye what’s going on type of music where it’s just slow tempo social commentary. This definitely isn’t as good as Marvin Gaye though

OK classic 70’s soul, but not exceptional

Gil Scott-Heron's politically and socially charged lyrics over Brian Jackson's sparse jazz keyboards. The concept is taken furthest 'H2O GATE', a live spoken-word track about the Watergate scandal. I would have preferred the album if more of it was like this track, which has the greatest emphasis on the words over the music. As it is, the album is academically interesting and influential but not something I'd return to. (Not on Spotify). Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: The Bottle Date listened: 22/04/22

A few other albums exist on Spotify from this artist, but strangely, this album is missing. Fortunately, I was able to track it down on YouTube. In addition to this being a perfect example of a concept album, it's certainly a protest album as well; the theme carries all throughout but if you haven't been paying attention, it is especially overt on the track Terminal Passage. Overall, the album is filled with strong poetic lyrics directed at America's treatment of Black Americans. Behind its political lyrics, this album is backed by some good, emotional vocals, and a pretty standard blues and soul flare. I am really glad for the opportunity to check this album out and hear its message, and am pleased that the author was able to find this and thought to include it in the project. Musically though, this is not really my jam.

This jazzy, soulful, blues album was produced by a vocalist-pianist duo in the 70's. The themes on the album deal with African-American culture within inner cities. At release, this album was in short supply and overlooked by critics. For these reasons and after the popularity of its only single "The Bottle", this album became a hit in the underground jazz and hip-hip scenes. This album is considered the best from Gil-Scott-Heron as a result of its rarity and commercial success. Once a CD version was released in the 90's, this album easily sold over 300,000 copies and is still on its way to gold certification. This album was a great listen because you can hear the beginnings of the hip-hop trend in music, blended with the "soul" of blues music. However, these music genres don't tickle my fancy as much as other ones, so I can't rate this album too highly.

This album isn't on Spotify. They do have the title track and I listened to that to get the gist. It didn't make me want to seek out the rest. It's not for me and I'm okay with unfairly writing it off. If the album art is ugly I have a hard time believing I'll like the music... *shrug* feeling brutally honest today I guess. Is it wrong to judge a record by its jacket? Maybe. But it's why they were invented. That's product marketing, baby!

Do disappointing. I live a lot of Gil Scott-Heron's poetry, but this just sounded like lift music. I'd heard The Bottle, which was the highlight, but failed to lift the whole album up.

Kind of sounds like he is just making up lyrics as the song goes on. I also don’t know how to describe it but he sounds like he is fake singing. He also doesn’t really go with the background music. This is like a 5/10 jazz album without the singing but like a 2/10 with the singing. The longer it went on the worse it got. I am now convinced someone was playing at a jazz bar and this guy just like walked in and started singing and no one stopped him. 1/10

It took me 10 days and a free trial of Apple Music to listen to this as it's not on Spotify. The anticipation has only made the disappointment worse. Messy, stream-of-consciousness jazz, that thinks it's infinitely cooler than it is. Just after announcing a 'blues' track, it's ruined by atonal chat over the top. I will never listen to this again. Jazz is exhausting.

I can't get past Scott-Heron's voice, especially given a trebly vocal mix that makes it almost painfully reedy. Otherwise, this would be a particularly noodley but otherwise innocuous jazz album. Maybe it would help to be stoned, but I wasn't. I turned the volume down at first because the mix was almost painful. Then I got bored after about ten minutes and turned it off.

H2ogate Blues is a must listen to track in March 2025. Otherwise this was a tough listen for me. ‘ Daddy Loves you ‘ is the kind of song this fella to played for his kids and was added to the album in error. Like Ben Folds Five without the humour or dare I say it, soul.

Oh my god.... Was.... Interesting? Too slow, waaaaaay too slow... It was good to hear it, just not something I want to hear again, sounded so dull and monotonous that I was dreading the next track

This seems custom made for me to hate. Just a big jumble of things I don't like in music. I guess I can see how a certain type of music can might like this, but I'm not the type.

I'm 4 minutes in and still wondering when the first song begins. Seems like just one long introduction. So, without further ado, I'll categorically state that jazz musicians can't write actual songs. Fast forward a few times to see if anything changes - nope. It's the most boring form of jazz on the market. Why do people like this stuff?

Oh man, listening to this on headphones was headache inducing. The constant fade from left to right channel, pulsing back and forward. Why would this be considered a good idea. I need some panadol.

What is bro yapping about? Half of this didn’t even feel like music, lots of talking with indiscriminate jazz in the background. The tracks without drums were very boring which felt like most of them. I wasn’t keen on the flute sprinkled throughout either. I feel like if I read about what he’s talking about I’d ‘get’ it more, but I don’t want to have to research to enjoy an album the first time. For some reason I predict dad will like this though 🔮

I enjoy instrumental jazz as much as the next guy, but adding vocals ontop can really ruin the listening experience for me, especially if they're slow, pervasive, and not melodic. 1/5

I can say two things: I am glad I can say that I listened to it and That’s 45 minutes I’m never getting back. Music was ok. Musicians were not very talented. The lyrics were insipid. GSH is a poet, he should have found someone to sing for him and musicians to play for him. This was a vanity project. 1 star

The Bottle was the one semi alright one for me. I'm not a big blues listener, but I can see where some would see a few tracks as super early inspiration for albums that came out 10-15 years later. The backing music was more enjoyable than the vocals to me. Some decent poetry in the lyrics though.

I guess i was expecting something like "Revolution Will Not Be Televised" and got a low-key soul/jazz record. Not really my thing.

Not sure why this is on the list or why I had to listen to it. Every song sounds the same, and they're not anything I would ever choose to listen to again. Except the spoken word H2Ogate which at least sounded different (but still wasn't good.)

I'm certainly not the target audience, couldn't care less about the topics brought up. Musically this is tiring

Nope. I listened to the song Winter in America on Spotify. Couldn’t find the album. Review of the song: Jazz and a lecture. Found the album on YouTube and listened while driving and running errands. Because it was on YouTube I had no idea what song was what, and a few times it skipped to a totally different album. I did my best. This album gets a 5/5 for difficulty of listening! I didn’t like the electric piano/organ or the Pan-flute(?). Didn’t care about the song for Bobby and wasn’t moved by the one about first love or the one about domestic discord. At the end there was a poem about Watergate that was interesting…. Mildly. It name checked Frank Rizzo. I’m sure it was sensational at the time. I would have liked a lot of the songs more if there were no words.

Another boring AF, soft-jazz, elevator-disco album. Painfully uninteresting. I kept thinking it'd pick up at least a little bit. But it didn't. For the first 20 minutes, it just got softer and softer and softer... to the point that I started feeling legitimate anger that I had to listen to something so pointless. Starting around track 4, "Back Home", the album picks up the pace a bit but the lyrics are still childishly soft and meaningless. And dear LORD the jazz flute. I don't know that I could hate this more. What a waste of time.
