Reviews (page 6 of 6)
Lots of pootling about on the keys. Meandering, lots of analogies and metaphors, very political, but not overly interesting - more of a manifesto than a music album. Appreciate its place in history. Would have preferred The Revolution Will Not Be Televised
113/1001 First listen. Sounds like it’s being made up on the spot. Just generic noodling. I’m sure there’s more artistry here but it’s over my head. 3/10
Smooth sounding jazz (both the music and the singer's voice itself). While it does have its groovy moments, it's just not for me.
Jazz poet, hoo boy, glad I've not got to listen to it because Spotify doesn't have the album.
Not my type of music.
Strange choice - I'd have thought Revolution Would Not Be Televised or either of his first two studio efforts would've been a more prescient pick. I think this is a bit wonky
Kind of boring
Not my kind of music.
Horatio Velveteen but without the charisma.
2.33
It’s alright in parts, but overall a bit boring.
Ah, nice enough sound but toooooo laid back for me, zzzzzzzz...
Some really boring mellow jazz with barely-sung vocals. I especially dislike the intermittent parpings of the flute. I like the lyrics, a whistlestop tour on race and inequality in America, but not enough to listen to this album again instead, of, say, reading a book about it.
Never heard of this album or artist before, and frankly this cover is throwing me for a loop. I've no clue what to expect. Is this going to be a psychedelic album? Soul. Jazz. Blues. Dead wrong on my prediction, though I can respect this spread of genres. Not my cup of tea, as usual. I enjoyed this as something to space out to, though there was nothing in here which held my attention or impressed me. There's a lot of dead air on these tracks, and many of the songs are stretched out to hell and back. If I am to be positive, I think the piano numbers are pretty nice, and the vocals from Scott-Heron/Jackson are both well-suited to this genre. Book time. Influential within African-American music. Scott-Heron is widely considered to be the "godfather of rap". Particularly influential with regards to its subject matter. Yeah, sure. These guys seem to have earned their stripes. I cosign this inclusion.
Lovely voice but only a couple of good songs. The start of the album was agonisingly slow.
no bueno
Only listened to 1-2 songs because not on spotify. Those were okay.
Had long, boring lulls.
Not my favorite. The instrumentals were alright... But I didn't like the singing
An album that I thought I should like, but just couldn't get into it
Was alright, but nothing to get particularly excited about
Found it pretty dry
Bit wanky. Dangerously close to heavy jazz flute.
Hard to find! Smooth, jazzy. Happy that I now know there's a piano guy called Brian Jackson (iykyk). Not that exciting though tbh...
Not really for me
I can see why people say they like this, I can see why it's important. It's not "good." It simply is not one of the best 1001 albums, or an album you'd need to hear. I'd never say to someone, "oh shit you gotta hear this album!" 2/5.
Overall, relatively forgettable album with the exception of the spoken word piece about Watergate.
Didn’t listen
Started very good, but kinda droned on as the album continued.
Ok. Not as much spoken word as I expected. 2/5
Lite jazz.
I still fear the jazz
Uinspirerande
2.5
probably bc i just listened to bb king immediately followed by miles davis but i’m respectfully bored i need a complete vibe change
Not bad but definitely not my vibe and kinda irritating
Cool for certain vibes but not as much my thing
This was okay. Annoying that it’s not on Spotify though.
#603. Jazz 2/5: jazz
I have to be honest - I'm not feeling it. Wikipedia says "Winter in America has been recognized by music writers as one of the prominent examples of early rap" and I'm sorry, what? This just sounds like smooth jazz - where the fuck are people getting "early rap" Music writers love to group black artists together, even if they're completely different genres. Anyway, I don't love it. I feel bad giving it two stars, but I never want to listen to it again, and that's kind of my litmus test.
I couldnt find this on spotify. I listened to a live version of a few of the songs, but the performances were kinda shitty. Not really fair but moving on
Not bad as background music, but if I actually focused on and listened to it, it was not great.
This was mostly incredibly boring. It was talk singing over piano noodling. The two songs where there was actually structure and other instruments were fine but nothing special. Watergate blues was interesting, it made me realize the US has been through shitty stuff before and came out okay, so it gave me hope for the future.
Pas facile.
Not really for me,
Jazz
Not on spotify?
Jazz? Didn't find the full album.
fine
The backing jazz piano/keyboard is nice. Kind of reminds me of something from Charlie Brown or Hey Arnold. That's about the only good thing I have to say about this. Not a fan of the voice and it's all just really boring. 3.75/10 (1.875/5)
Nothing Memorable
Some of the lyrics are quite powerful - relevant - timeless, but too often everything feels a little aimless and ambling. I guess spoken word doesn't really draw me in enough to have the content overcome the approach.
forced singing voice a bit. lots of focus on vocals and seems shout-singing at times. lovely jazzy music, but there's better out there.
Maybe it was the version I listened to, but the production is absolutely abysmal on the electric piano on the first track. The vibration of it and its constant changes in volume made the song positively unlistenable and I almost stopped the album entirely. However, I persisted and found some really great (parts of) Jazz/R&B crossover gems. Nevertheless, not one of the songs came even remotely close to justifying its length, with many tracks ending with two or three minutes of repetition. Additionally, the slow jams were less jammy and more drifty, leaving me frustrated – as did this album as a whole, because it has a lot potential. Addendum: H2Ogate was a beautiful take-down of Nixon. 2.0/5.0: Disappointing
Not the best a little boring
maybe eh gut, aber not on spotify also werd i's eh nie hören
27/02/25 I do tend to like my jazz albums. I don't think this was one that really excelled though.
This left me really looking forward to the end of it, which is a shame as I was keen to hear this! Not my cup of tea it seems.
Like some of this, mostly the upbeat funky ones. The slow songs didn't do it for me as much.
Not my favorite.
Hate when I have to listen to these on YouTube but very good
Album not available. Other stuff was aight.
It had its moments but overall it really struck me as a parody of a lounge act in a seedy bar of the 70s
I’ll be perfectly honest…this did nothing for me. I don’t really like 70s jazz, blues, or soul, and this was the personification of all those things. I appreciated the lyrics, though.
Jazzy but not that gripping
Some pretty boring stuff here
It was okay
Mostly annoying
I was gonna give this one star but then H2O Gate Blues came on and I got a kick out of it
I can imagine H2O was groundbreaking. The rest is boring.
not my cup of tea.
It’s fun to listen to him call out all the political criminals on “H2Ogate Blues”, but apart from that this was a loooong listen for me. Doesn’t help that I can’t stand the flute and struggle with jazz appreciation. I would have given it one star but that song, which is way towards the end, bumps it up to two.
Interesting sound, very mellow, but not my cup of tea - Jazz poetry? No thank you
I wanted to like this album more than I did. I can't say I remember a single one of these tracks. While listening I know that everything sounded good, but there wasn't really anything to grab onto.
1.5
Talent and skill is undeniable. Really incredibly interesting to see this album isn't on Spotify or streaming besides YouTube.
Boring
This is one of those, yeah, sure, the political part is good, it’s interesting, you ever read Nixonland? It’s like that. But uh. The music? The fun of listening to this? Not really. It’s just not an enjoyable album.
too inconsistent. also not on spotify.
Not my thing at all
I had never heard of this album nor these artists. What a politically charged and timely album despite being 50 years old. I particularly liked the tacks Back Home and The Bottle. I really loved the song H2O Gate Blues - such a powerful song about the events in 1974. I’m not huge fan of the flute in jazz, I always think of the awful Zamfir, but it works for this album. Overall, a soulful and delightful album.
Political jazz music. Nah. It’s like combining squash and oatmeal. Not a good combination for me.
It wasn't available on Spotify....altho he had a ton of other music on there. Not everyday listening type stuff....fine background jazz.
4.5/10
Trop minimaliste.
Decent music and vocals just not my vibe
The album started off kinda dragging for me, quite contemplative and melancholy. They were working out their troubles, but I couldn't stay engaged. Unfortunately I found the music a bit boring and repetitive at times, and the vocals were not that interesting either. Every line seemed to end with a word containing extra syllables added, like smile became smah-ha-hile, girl became guh-huh-hurl. But I was craving something more lively and melodic, less droning music and meandering melisma. “The Bottle” brought some energy, finally, with its bouncy bass line and funky flute. a dolla-nine, get a bottle o’ wine! a dolla-nine, get a bottle o’ wine! a dolla-nine, get a bottle o’ wine! a dolla-nine, get a bottle o’ wine! Then we were back to another soporific number after it ended. The only other one that grabbed me is “H2O Gate Blues”, which I quite enjoyed. The more things change…
Couldn't really get into this. It sounded like a few guys doing a rough rehearsal. The talent was there, but the songs just didn't go anywhere. No dynamics. The bottle song sounded like they were trying to practice one section of of a song over and over. Two chords for seemingly ever.
Not my thing but it was kinda interesting. Had to listen to it on YouTube which sucked.
Well, some of this is a stone groove, and I think maybe Benjamin Clementine is a fan? But I much prefer Benjamin. Gil's voice is cool but the tracks, dare I say, get a bit boring. Emma would love the flute solos!
I like him but don't like the ultra slow jazz style of most of this album. One big exception is the live track, 'Watergate Blues' is great.
Did I really need to listen to this? Yes it has social implications and messages. Yes it paints a picture of a guy disappointed with the civil rights movement. But, the delivery and craft does not hold you
wow. i get it. relevant message of the times and likely still important today. but not this musical approach, and certainly don't need the soulful poetry lecture.
This was a unique listen. A mixture of 70s political poetry, jazz, blues and soul. Very much a product of its time. The vocals and piano often seem out of sync for the first 15 minutes, giving off a strange vibe. It's like they were on different pages of the same sheet music. While it's not necessarily what I was anticipating, it's exactly what I was expecting (if that makes sense).
This was a bit of a meh, especially in comparison to the revolutionary Pieces of a Man. Plus I couldn't find it on Tidal nor Qobuz had to resort to youtube. Anyway did not find it in anyway essential. One great song that I know, The Bottle so that helped but the rest didn't connect 2.5 stars
Wildly inconsistent in terms of quality and was such a chore to listen to
Bit twiddly
A fairly boring album from a musical standpoint. Doesn't move the boundaries on a jazz or blues front, nor from a production standpoint. About the only thing that differentiates this album from others is the lyrical subject matter. Perhaps would have been better as a poetry chapbook. Currently unavailable on any of the streaming services in the U.S. Had to make do with an album length file on YouTube, so it was not a pleasant listening experience. Perhaps having better access to it would have increased my rating.
it's fine, not my jam Will I listen to again: 0%
H2O gate was interesting, overall fine just not for me
Ekki minn tebolli.
I find this excruciatingly boring. I hear the musicianship, but it doesnt connect to me, at all. I would give it 1,5 stars, but since i cant i'll give it 2, just because I have to reserve 1 star to stuff that are REALLY crap.
Bluesy, political topics of the 70’s, racial.
20 minutes before sing with chords and a beat. I know it's jazz or whatever. But this is just sort of naval gazing. And many of these songs don't have an ending. They just sorry of face out. I suspect it's because they aren't real songs. The message may be great. But the package is lacking.
Rating: 5/10 Meh.
p327. 1974. 2 stars. Sharp lyrics that are still relevant today, let down by meandering jazz improv with no trace of a tune. Not essential listening.
A bit of a mish-mash of an album. Some of this I loved - for example the We Beg Your Pardon 'interlude', although I am not sure I would play that on repeat. The heart is in the right place but the style varies so much on this it was hard to settle down and just listen through.
It's mostly poetry or spoken word over jazz with not much I would classify as a song. Worth checking out The Bottle, though. Hard to find on streaming services.
classic youtube only shit album
Ok but not for me
Couldn't find this exact album on Spotify or other music site. Listened to a play list for same artist and name that maybe has these songs. Enjoyed some of it. But, seemed to lack a little snap.
Not for me - although some good vocals
Not on Spotify is disappointing. I like to check out lyrics I may have missed or misunderstood, so already not liking. Then I thought the music was decent, but then I started hearing the gogdamn flute. And it seemed to get more and more prevalent or maybe I was just so annoyed, but it seemed like I was hearing a lot. NO DAMN FLUTES, PLEASE! Overall, I thought just OK. Not really my thing and the flute just kills any momentum. I did like the lyrics in Your Daddy Loves You. I would like to think all children KNOW their parents love them more than they will ever know. They will realize when/if they have their own child. Again, was OK. Don't think I would revisit or relisten even if on Spotify. 2.5
Improvisational vocals...interesting, cringe at times, but interesting. It was especially interesting to hear the musicians attempt to challenge each other or trip one another up but in ways that serve the song as a whole. Interesting is probably the best word I have for this. May listen again someday. 2
Ok
Toch slechts 2 sterren.
I like other GSH that I’ve heard. Unfortunately this didn’t grab me at all. I enjoyed some of the electric keyboard sounds and lyrics but that’s about it.
Dne
Well it seems to be a work of some artistic integrity, but I just found most of it desperately dull to listen to. It got better in the second half; The Bottle was a welcome injection of jazz flute infused energy, and H2O Gate Blues was pretty great too - the one track where GSH's topical poetry really comes to the fore. Between them they did more than enough to earn the album a second star.
Not my jam. Not offensive, but not my choice. Super wide stereo experimentation.
Rating not a reflection on the artists, who I am sure are legends at their craft. It's just that this feels like strapping a VR headset to your ears and engaging psychonautics mode. Not for me.
Reading the article I was thinking this was a jazz album. It's not but certainly has some jazz influences. Maybe because of that and the African influences and certainly the themes of the songs (esp H2Ogate Blues and the title track), it reminds me of the masterpiece "Songs in the Key of Life" in some places, but certainly not as good. I didn't mind it but I probably wouldn't listen to it again.
I really struggled getting in to this one.
it might need a closer listen, maybe the lyrics are great? but it just seems like very soft jazz rock which is not appealing to me
Eh. It's cool, but it's not good. 2
I am not into jazz. And I am definitely not into spoken word. The first few tracks were enjoyable, but the last few were extremely difficult to get through, I found myself counting the seconds waiting for it to end. I respect the concept and intention behind this, but I would not willingly listen to it again. Also, it’s not on Spotify, so that was annoying.
No está mal(PSP)
Not on any services I use. Except the title song and it's live. Didn't get me there.
Nice but not great, some nice jazz in the background. H20gate blues has the poet lyrics I thought I was going to get for the whole album.
'The Bottle' is great other than that, I would have to be in the right mood
The band sounds great. Felt interrupted by the singer. Sounds 2&3 started getting going then the rest of the album dragged again. Most likely another better off to see live.
Kind of weird political slow jams. Not really good, but I could at least sit through it.
Meh, not the style for me. Well produced though.
Prefer Bridges.
Oh just put it on Spotify please. After revisiting this on YouTube I can conclude it’s not worth the hassle. Generally annoying, pretty jazzy, slightly stressful, occasionally funky, mostly boring.
Hatunnosto tälle taiteelle, vaikken otse innostunut liiemmin. Kerran kuunneltava ainakin
H20Gate Blues was cool - that's kinda what I thought the whole album would be. Unfortunately, the rest of it was pretty lame.
the bottle was great. didn't care for the rest.
At first, I was pleasantly surprised and liked it more than I thought. I didn’t expect it to be so funky and fun music. Then I looked down and realised I was playing a totally different album. Thanks YouTube. When I eventually went back to the correct album it was as I feared. Not enjoyable at all. I’m sure it had fantastic and far-reaching impact at the time but I cannot deal with it now. The Bottle was an interesting song.
Reminded me of Stevie wonder and war. I like the concept and I like the sound but it's not what I would listen to
I listened on a Friday. Couldn’t remember anything about it by Monday.
Pretty jazzy Heard some Stevie Wonder, War in there. Just not my thing
Not what I would normally listen to. But I appreciate the talent and musicianship and songwriting. Reminded me a bit of Stevie Wonder and War
I found the title track but couldn't find the album. The song was fine.
Really not my thing. There's some good moments and I did like H2O Gate Blues. The delivery is passionate and the piano is great. Just not for me.
Eh. No thank you
Incredibly boring.
Nope -- music that makes you think < music that makes you feel. The only thing I feel when listening to this is that I am 'supposed' to like it. Stop bossing me around Gill Scott-Heron.
Absolutely boring. The jazz background is bland and the singing is uninteresting.
Hørte typ 2 sanger. Helt ok.
Not bad album at all. Reminds me of some of the earlier jazz ones we've had. I had to listen to this on YouTube, so I got the full album experience - I had no idea when the songs changed and that was probably for the better. Jazzy but still not my thing 4/10
It was a groovy journey with a few tracks that rose above. Bit too much flute for my taste!
Too slow, uninteresting
An interesting and probably more popular in its release time than now kind of album. Gil seems to be the kind that likes to speak melodically to various piano and flute tunes. Some of his singing is really good. The yazz flute gets a little tiring but the piano is good. I feel this album would be better if it was just a more jazzy r&b style but that’s now. The 70s trends were different. 5.0/10
not something along my tastes
Did not like.
cant get on Spotify
Not really my style, but I like it more than I would have expected...that said, I'll never listen to it again
Just so not my thing. I appreciate the influence it has had, but as I don't like jazz and I don't like rap, it's just not for me. It seems that the beauty of this album is 99% the lyrics, and I don't really care for lyrics that much.
Fuck this album for not being on Spotify but that being said it felt a lot like the Marvin Gaye what’s going on type of music where it’s just slow tempo social commentary. This definitely isn’t as good as Marvin Gaye though
OK classic 70’s soul, but not exceptional
Gil Scott-Heron's politically and socially charged lyrics over Brian Jackson's sparse jazz keyboards. The concept is taken furthest 'H2O GATE', a live spoken-word track about the Watergate scandal. I would have preferred the album if more of it was like this track, which has the greatest emphasis on the words over the music. As it is, the album is academically interesting and influential but not something I'd return to. (Not on Spotify). Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: The Bottle Date listened: 22/04/22
A few other albums exist on Spotify from this artist, but strangely, this album is missing. Fortunately, I was able to track it down on YouTube. In addition to this being a perfect example of a concept album, it's certainly a protest album as well; the theme carries all throughout but if you haven't been paying attention, it is especially overt on the track Terminal Passage. Overall, the album is filled with strong poetic lyrics directed at America's treatment of Black Americans. Behind its political lyrics, this album is backed by some good, emotional vocals, and a pretty standard blues and soul flare. I am really glad for the opportunity to check this album out and hear its message, and am pleased that the author was able to find this and thought to include it in the project. Musically though, this is not really my jam.
Unfortunately can only listen to title track - fracking YouTube for the rest just wasn’t worth it
most of it wasnt on spotify so i only listened to a bit. Wasn't really in the mood for jazz music, but seemed like it would be enjoyable if I was
Funky-blues. Niet erg speciaal
This jazzy, soulful, blues album was produced by a vocalist-pianist duo in the 70's. The themes on the album deal with African-American culture within inner cities. At release, this album was in short supply and overlooked by critics. For these reasons and after the popularity of its only single "The Bottle", this album became a hit in the underground jazz and hip-hip scenes. This album is considered the best from Gil-Scott-Heron as a result of its rarity and commercial success. Once a CD version was released in the 90's, this album easily sold over 300,000 copies and is still on its way to gold certification. This album was a great listen because you can hear the beginnings of the hip-hop trend in music, blended with the "soul" of blues music. However, these music genres don't tickle my fancy as much as other ones, so I can't rate this album too highly.
This album isn't on Spotify. They do have the title track and I listened to that to get the gist. It didn't make me want to seek out the rest. It's not for me and I'm okay with unfairly writing it off. If the album art is ugly I have a hard time believing I'll like the music... *shrug* feeling brutally honest today I guess. Is it wrong to judge a record by its jacket? Maybe. But it's why they were invented. That's product marketing, baby!
Meh
Понравилась Song for Bobby Smith.
According to all my searches this album doesn't even exist lol. How do I score this? I listened to another album of his on Spotify from 72, was jazzy. Not my thing. 2/5.
It was ok
Not really my bag
Do disappointing. I live a lot of Gil Scott-Heron's poetry, but this just sounded like lift music. I'd heard The Bottle, which was the highlight, but failed to lift the whole album up.
Not that great of an album and I didn't really care for it.
Not on Spotify
Kind of sounds like he is just making up lyrics as the song goes on. I also don’t know how to describe it but he sounds like he is fake singing. He also doesn’t really go with the background music. This is like a 5/10 jazz album without the singing but like a 2/10 with the singing. The longer it went on the worse it got. I am now convinced someone was playing at a jazz bar and this guy just like walked in and started singing and no one stopped him. 1/10

I hated this. It wasn’t on Spotify or Apple Music, so I had to listen to it on YouTube, which is annoying. I just wanted it to be over.
not sure I listened to the entire album as it was not available on Spotify. I listened on YouTube. It is just a spoken word/poem reading. Definitely impactful but not anything that I am going to listen to
Can’t find the album anywhere
I didn’t like
1 - TERRIBLE
It took me 10 days and a free trial of Apple Music to listen to this as it's not on Spotify. The anticipation has only made the disappointment worse. Messy, stream-of-consciousness jazz, that thinks it's infinitely cooler than it is. Just after announcing a 'blues' track, it's ruined by atonal chat over the top. I will never listen to this again. Jazz is exhausting.
2/10

Sorry, mit Jazz kann ich nichts anfangen.
Well talkative not my thang and also from another time and black , jazzy kinda but no thx
mehhh. it was a cool vibe but i'd like it to be more funky
i couldny find this album.
Jazz/R&B,Funk, not sure.
Yet another album not available to listen to…
About as bad as it gets, sounds like a pub singer on a cheap keyboard.
Shit
Probably not my thing tbh but there was quality and I liked the political message. I wouldn't listen to it again though
Utter dreary dirge
I respect the hell out of Gil Scott-Heron, but that doesn't make this a good album.
missed this due to technical problems
Dull aimless mixture of jazz, soul, and spoken word making something like Soft Jazz.

Do not think his vocals are particularly listenable or engaging.
Culturally not connected to this, so didn't get the message or struggle. Not a fan of performance art, spoken word or rap etc. So a 1

Not for me. 1/5
I can't get past Scott-Heron's voice, especially given a trebly vocal mix that makes it almost painfully reedy. Otherwise, this would be a particularly noodley but otherwise innocuous jazz album. Maybe it would help to be stoned, but I wasn't. I turned the volume down at first because the mix was almost painful. Then I got bored after about ten minutes and turned it off.
Can’t find this - not available on Spotify?
nope
nee nee nee... had hoop omdat ik 'the revolutions will not be televised' wel OK vind... maar dit was echt niet te harden
H2ogate Blues is a must listen to track in March 2025. Otherwise this was a tough listen for me. ‘ Daddy Loves you ‘ is the kind of song this fella to played for his kids and was added to the album in error. Like Ben Folds Five without the humour or dare I say it, soul.
I hated this. 1/5

Not available on Spotify
Eh. Not my preferred style.
First song - really annoying (almost upsetting rapid panning between left and right). Other than that it's the most dull easy listening album 0/5 (can't select 0)
The album wasn't even on Spotify, but I found the title track and it ended a long streak of good albums ...
Dull as ditch water
Oh my god.... Was.... Interesting? Too slow, waaaaaay too slow... It was good to hear it, just not something I want to hear again, sounded so dull and monotonous that I was dreading the next track
This seems custom made for me to hate. Just a big jumble of things I don't like in music. I guess I can see how a certain type of music can might like this, but I'm not the type.
I'm 4 minutes in and still wondering when the first song begins. Seems like just one long introduction. So, without further ado, I'll categorically state that jazz musicians can't write actual songs. Fast forward a few times to see if anything changes - nope. It's the most boring form of jazz on the market. Why do people like this stuff?
Oh man, listening to this on headphones was headache inducing. The constant fade from left to right channel, pulsing back and forward. Why would this be considered a good idea. I need some panadol.
Sadly this is almost unlistenable to me, it’s everything I don’t want in the music I listen to.
Album not available in my region :/

What is bro yapping about? Half of this didn’t even feel like music, lots of talking with indiscriminate jazz in the background. The tracks without drums were very boring which felt like most of them. I wasn’t keen on the flute sprinkled throughout either. I feel like if I read about what he’s talking about I’d ‘get’ it more, but I don’t want to have to research to enjoy an album the first time. For some reason I predict dad will like this though 🔮
what happen?
Non on Spotify.
Spotify was unable to find the album, but I did find one of the tracks on the album: "Your Daddy Loves You". Jazz-soul-funk. Not for me.

Horrible
I can say two things: I am glad I can say that I listened to it and That’s 45 minutes I’m never getting back. Music was ok. Musicians were not very talented. The lyrics were insipid. GSH is a poet, he should have found someone to sing for him and musicians to play for him. This was a vanity project. 1 star
Politely, no thanks.
Link did not work
1970s R&B Kloot style with cheesy organ and flute. Melodic, but that's about it. Would've been a two, but loses one for the politics. A 1 star

Laulelua banaaleimmilla mahdollisilla taustoilla, joita määrittää erityisesti jazzia tursuava, pintaan miksattu piano.
But I feel bad about it
Not wasting my life listening to this
The Bottle was the one semi alright one for me. I'm not a big blues listener, but I can see where some would see a few tracks as super early inspiration for albums that came out 10-15 years later. The backing music was more enjoyable than the vocals to me. Some decent poetry in the lyrics though.
Definitely don't enjoy the soul r&b stuff
couldn't find the album
I guess i was expecting something like "Revolution Will Not Be Televised" and got a low-key soul/jazz record. Not really my thing.
Not sure why this is on the list or why I had to listen to it. Every song sounds the same, and they're not anything I would ever choose to listen to again. Except the spoken word H2Ogate which at least sounded different (but still wasn't good.)
I'm certainly not the target audience, couldn't care less about the topics brought up. Musically this is tiring
So very, very boring. I dont care how good or important he lyrics might be, this is a chore to get through.
Slaapverwekkend saai.
I know he is cool but this was a bit dull….
Nope. I listened to the song Winter in America on Spotify. Couldn’t find the album. Review of the song: Jazz and a lecture. Found the album on YouTube and listened while driving and running errands. Because it was on YouTube I had no idea what song was what, and a few times it skipped to a totally different album. I did my best. This album gets a 5/5 for difficulty of listening! I didn’t like the electric piano/organ or the Pan-flute(?). Didn’t care about the song for Bobby and wasn’t moved by the one about first love or the one about domestic discord. At the end there was a poem about Watergate that was interesting…. Mildly. It name checked Frank Rizzo. I’m sure it was sensational at the time. I would have liked a lot of the songs more if there were no words.
Another boring AF, soft-jazz, elevator-disco album. Painfully uninteresting. I kept thinking it'd pick up at least a little bit. But it didn't. For the first 20 minutes, it just got softer and softer and softer... to the point that I started feeling legitimate anger that I had to listen to something so pointless. Starting around track 4, "Back Home", the album picks up the pace a bit but the lyrics are still childishly soft and meaningless. And dear LORD the jazz flute. I don't know that I could hate this more. What a waste of time.

Couldn't get on spotify, tried listening on youtube but it wasn't for me. There was a lack of structure to the songs.
I wanted to like this, expected to like this but was underwhelming.
Dull
Wake me up when it's over.

bad, made me angry, lame.
yuck
Incredible album.
This was just strange. No idea how to explain it.
Dull, aimless jazz music. There may have been a message in there somewhere, but I missed it when I fell asleep. Vocals weren't particular interesting either.
