Reviews (page 6 of 8)
Perfectly fine. Nothing stands out for me though.
Yaaass! More Roxy Music!!! And then, I listened to it. It's OK. It's no where near as weird and good as the first album in our rotation. It's still better than most of the early 70s junk we've had - but I think I'll stick with the earlier album.
Wasn't sure what to expect with this album, other than two attractive (mostly) naked women on the cover. Wasn't disappointed.
Unerwartet ok.
p322. 1974. 2 stars 70s art rock for lounge lizards. Well done, but oddly soulless and emotionless. Only a couple of standout tunes, certainly not enough to repay repeated listening.
I'm not sure about this one. I realized that I know and like some of their music (and Brian Ferry's) from the 80s well enough, but I hadn't recognized that when I first listened to this. What I did notice was that although I did like some of the interesting instrumentations backing him, I thought Brian Ferry's vocals and melodies in these songs had a weird, disconcerting quality to them that I wasn't so fond of.
This one did not sit well with me. I don't know exactly what it was, but it was all rather grating my ears and nerves. It is not like it was terribly noisy or anything, but something about it was unpleasant and unsettling for me. The album cover didn't help...
Mama Mia pizzeria this cover art 🥴 It was fine, but I enjoyed the other record I had from Roxy Music a little more. I felt it had more unique tracks, while a few here seemed pretty straightforward alternative rock. A few really cool songs on here nonetheless. 5/10
ok
70’er engelsk rock, avant garde stil, poppede melodier,
Starts off well. then a bit samey.
It's a catchy one that's easily a 3 and maybe a 4 for me, it's polished, skilled, not too long, creative and Bryan Ferry's voice is always great.
I quite like this, but feel like it's missing something... mainly a decent middle... there's some good stuff at the beginning and the end, but they go a bit into prog rock without the sophistication in the middle. The proper glam rock songs are pretty good, would happily listen to those again. If It Takes All Night takes the pace down a bit, which is fine, but then leads into Bitter Sweet and Triptych which are utter dross. Gets a bit better towards the end, but not more than a 3 overall.
Boobs
slow start then goes batshit in the middle - peaking with 'Casanova', which is a great tune fades out at the end
Enjoyed this but nothing could beat Love is The Drug in my opinion
A nice surprise
- The Thrill of It All – Good lead up to the vocals. Strong guitar work throughout. Like the violins too. Good song! Perhaps a bit long, but a good experience throughout. - Three and Nine – A nostalgia tune for the days when three shillings and nine pence could get you a ticket to a movie – and an escape from the hardships of life into fantasy. Not a fan of the opening instrumentation. The harmonica and synths aren’t my thing. Bass is cool though. Sax is nice too. The main melody just doesn’t click with me. - All I Want is You – This one opens loud. Not necessarily big, just loud. It’s a whiny love song, so not my thing. Some of the music is good. Even adjusting my volume, it still feels weirdly loud at times. It’s only really this one track that hits like a freaking sledgehammer (and not in a good way). - Out of the Blue – Intro is good, though a tad long. Weird, almost space rock style bass and synth intermissions for a couple bars don’t really quite fit. Most of the individual parts of this song are good, but the total effect is really jarring and unpleasant. A shame that this could have been legitimately a top tier track if it wasn’t so schizophrenic. - If it Takes All Night – A peppy “cheer up” love song that may be ironic (it’s British and sounds happy, so yeah, it’s probably ironic). Not my kinda track (that harmonica…ick). - Bitter Sweet – The ballad. It’s darker and slower, truly taking a somber note. Interestingly, where theyir love songs used gratuitous French, this one uses gratuitous German. Fitting, I guess. Not a fan at all of the weird…dark polka(???) at a few parts. It really doesn’t work for me. - Triptych – Artsier tune. Another ballad. Some more anthemic, almost hymnlike moments. It’s not one I’ll listen to again, but it’s a more realized execution of their ideas compared to the previous track. - Casanova – Seems to be Bryan Ferry mocking his own glam-rock persona. This is another weirdly loud one. It’s a solid track (though not one I’ll add). - A Really Good Time – Don’t like the tone in the intro. Ultimately boring. - Prairie Rose – Nice guitar in intro. An anthem to Texas from a English band isn’t something I expected. Not my thing, but a competent track. On a roll of English rock albums, and this one certainly has it’s own identity, but ultimately it’s not quite as high as The Stranglers or The Smiths in quality. Some tracks almost get there (Out of the Blue in particular would be fantastic if the good parts actually fit together into a pleasant listening experience). I can see the ambition, and some of it really does work, so I can’t put it too low, but the fact that the ambition often exceeds the actually quality is a notable flaw. I wonder if I’m just in a weird mood or if the mastering was really as bad as my ear suggested on a few songs. I’m far from an audiophile, but Casanova and and Alli I Want Is You legimitely sounded like they just cranked the volume up to unreasonable levels and called it a day. Varied instrumentation and decent singing at least makes it listenable, so it gets a 3 for me. More like a 4 in ideas and a 2 in execution. Top Tracks: - The Thrill of it All – Solid rock anthem. - Prairie Rose – The guitar solo is probably the best musical moment of the album.
A good 70s rock album: fun, enjoyable, not memorable.
Decent album. Great cover. 3/5
First listen. I feel like this is a band I should have heard of but I can’t say I have. Good stuff.
Very disappointed to find out this isn't a punk album by a bunch of chicks singing about being cottage core lesbians frolicking in the woods during a summer of love. Instead it's one of those records with a cover designed to sell to men. The feeling of the album is soulful and electric. If it takes all night is cheesy garbage. There's something deeply condescending about the lyrics in a few songs that distracts from the quality of the sound.
Good, not great.
I know this is pre (sophisticated) multitracking; I know that I’ve been spoiled (in both senses of the word) by 320 kps and WAVs. . Still. The sound balance on this is absolutely atrocious. The melodies win out, but only just - and at the expense of the rhythm that does exist, and does seem to be quite adventurous. Pity…
One one hand, this album does sound pretty good. There’s an urgency to it that I think is missing in other glam rock albums (looking at you, Transformer). It sounds good, and it’s occasionally creative. On the other hand, there is a cloud of unoriginality and douchiness over this whole thing. It just feels really masturbatory and I don’t really give a shit. 3 stars I guess.
Litt cheesy
Absolutely all over the place. Some of it ("Out of the Blue") I really like, some of it is just chaos.
Kinda okay brittish prog rock, fine but pretty meh.
Never really listened to them but I've seen this infamous cover. It's pretty enjoyable. Catchy with nice riffs and some great arrangements.
Pretty good, never listened to roxy music before. Glad I've heard them and really enjoyed a few songs. I enjoyed the album but I won't be listening to this a ton. Favorite songs: * Prairie Rose * Out of the Blue (Mark Mothersbaugh vibes) * Casanova Rating: 3 (good).... album cover is a 5 though, amirite guys?? 😉
Pretty good. Sounds like a precursor to Britpop. Album cover would give Marco Rubio a conniption which is a plus. 3/5
It was cool. There was some songs I really liked but overall it was just fine, not something I’ll go back to.
I’ve had 2 Roxy Music albums already and I really disliked them. This offering seemed much more palatable. I think maybe Brian Ferry has tempered his vocals a little or maybe I was in a better mode because last time it really grated on me. Better without Eno, who would have funk it?
Every song sounded different, but none were highly memorable. Appreciated the instrumentals - good guitar leads, fun basslines, and a nice mix of supporting instruments (violin, saxophone, harmonica, synths, piano). Vocal performance did nothing for me.
Kids LOVED dancing to the fourth track.
A bewildered man shouting at a cloud
It was fine
Pretty good arty glam rock. I think I prefer For Your Pleasure that I reviewed a few months ago. Listenable nonetheless.
It gets a lot better as it goes along. Still not what I'd say is "good" as an overall project, except for that album cover of course! That's great!
Pretty nice
Fine, 80s pop music. Exploitative cover art.
Really enjoyed Bitter Sweet and Casanova and more than a few songs reminded me of Bowie. Will definitely listen again.
I enjoyed listening to this album. Some of the guitar riffs and vocal style contained elements that reminded me of punk and post punk. Stand out tracks for me were "Three and Nine", "Out of the Blue" and "Bitter Sweet"
Wasn't really listening until Bitter Sweet. That one peaked my attention a bit. The rest of the album felt alright. Others have gone over similar ground in more compelling ways (Bowie, Queen, Danny Elfman, et al).
Liked "if it takes all night" especially, overall was alreet
Not bad, another Roxy Music album full of weird Brian Ferry-isms.
Another from Roxy! Apparently this one is after Brian Eno's departure, so they don't quite have the same edge they did in the last album we heard. Still, some solid tracks here and there. I wish it were more memorable is all. Favorite tracks: Three and Nine, Bitter Sweet. Album art: AWOOOOGA, hello! Interesting that these ladies are the girlfriend and sister of a musician in Can, another band we've had. I can't imagine he likes looking at this one. Very racy, but very memorable, much more than the music within. I'm almost relieved that this isn't my favorite Roxy Music album, because if I were to buy one I'd feel a little scared getting this. 3/5
Somewhere in the same velocity of Bowie and Sparks (and T. Rex). Where Bowie went weird and spacey with it, these guys seemed to keep it tight. The production on this thing is cacophonous, feeling like you can actively hear every single instrument used. Favorite tracks: "Out of the Blue", "Casanova"
A good listen but not memorable for me. Art rock.
Good voice, good easy listen
I want to love this so much, if only because of the album cover. The first song to truly sound "country" is "If It Takes All NIght". But that's not my problem. Ferry is such a fine crooner, but he's really all over the place here... and the rest is a bit too extremental...yeah, I created something new as well.
I had never heard of Roxy Music. The album was good. Might give it another go to see if anything pops out.
This is put together a bit better than their self-titled debut (appeared earlier on this list).
Gross cover
3.5 stars
Not bad. Never really listened to Roxy Music much before. Would listen again, but wouldn’t buy it.
It's not a bad album. But without Eno they clearly had to hit the cheap shock tactics to keep people interested. Out goes the exciting bizarre music of before, in with more standard, but listenable, FM rock with a crooner over the top. It's not bad, but you'd struggle to love anything here.
There was a nice mix of different sounds and styles. A good listen
Didn't hate it... Didn't love it.
I'm not really getting on with his voice, and it gets a bit too weird in an uninteresting way in the 2nd half of the album. Will probably not put this on again, but was also not offended by it.
It's okay. Inoffensive background music.
"All I want is you" and "Out of the Blue" are the two songs that stuck with me more after first listening. I feel this is an album that can potentially grow on me, but for now, no first love.
Had no idea what to expect here; knew absolutely nothing about the band going in. It was decent. Not life changing by any means, but mostly enjoyable. Yet another 3.5 star album imo.
To paraphrase an old Steve Martin joke, did you know that Roxy Music NEVER wrote me back? And after all the time I spent holding up this album with one hand. But let's not be juvenile, we're here to review the music. I think I would probably be a Roxy Music fan if it wasn't for Bryan Ferry's vocals. I just find them vaguely creepy. I like the music, the songwriting, and the production though. They definitely had their own style. 3 stars.
Interesting. I knew the name but not the music. Hearing that they were doing this in '74 is what makes it interesting for me: I hear a whole lot of later acts in this, so this band must have influenced a LOT of late-70's and 80's "glam rock" and punk/art-rock influenced bands. It's very well done, some incredible musicians playing on this record; it just sounds a little dated to my ears mostly due to how many bands that followed their time sounded like or tried to sound like them. Impressive.
What best represents this highly fascinating, sometimes enjoyable yet rarely catchy sound of this unconventional species of art-rock? A couple of boobies, of course.
A two star album with a four star cover. Let's split the difference.
some glorious moments, but feels like a chrysalis for careers as yet unborn
Boobies hehe.
6/10
This may have been my first time listening to a full album from Roxy Music. This album did not change my opinion of the band. The music was okay, but I don't imagine that this album will come to mind for a re-listen.
Bueno nomás
Interesting sound, I like the upbeat pop overtones. Funky sounds for sure.
Enjoyed Bryan Ferry's interesting singing as always. Didn't blow me away but I dug it for sure
3.5
2nd listen. Starting to grow on me. 3/5
Niet zo kut als ik dacht eigenlijk. Ook niet bijzonder spannend.
Muziekaal best creatief en divers. Ik vond dit prima te pruimen. En ook nog een +puntje voor de albumhoes ;-)
Geinig.
MMMeennnssseee
Bit chaotic. Just didn't love it not sure why
what is the point of the cover art i don't understand like the music is sick but the cover art makes me so uncomfy i really do like the music though i am morally conflicted as to how i should rate this
great uh, album cover.
I think this is the most eclectic album I’ve had so far. Each song is completely different from the other but the album as a whole still has a strong identity. Hard to pinpoint fav songs but: bitter sweet
That cover is scandalous! The music is pretty bland. This is another one of those bands that everyone seems to like except me. I have neither positive or negative feelings about this band, it is straight vanilla. Roxy Music always gets lumped into music that I somehow missed and should spend some decent time getting to know. But, even after two listens, it is entirely forgettable. I hear some Beck in there, and some Talking Heads and some Rocky Horror Picture Show. It's kind of all over the place... The music backing up the sing-song-y delivery of the lyrics is decent, specifically Out of The Blue has some great sounds grounding it, but the style of singing is filled with fiber and makes me want to poop. Another album that leaves me asking "Why is this on the list?"
Not a Roxy fan, but that's decent.
bang average, easily forgetable, great cover
It’s fun, but it is weird. It’s funny how unconventional Roxy Music were, and how popular they were. But would I listen again..?

not bad!
The album has a good sound, but it fails to have an identity as it sounds like a blend of T Rex and Bowie. It sounds lifeless despite being theatric.
Not bad but just very uneventful
Interesting. Everything started to blur together towards the end, but the energy was pretty good.
So this is my 100th album on this journey. One hundred down and still haven't had anything from The Beatles (or any of their solo work), Bowie, Springsteen, no Led Framing Zeppelin, no Marvin Gaye, or anything Neil Young appears on. I've only had one album from the infamous "Highest Rated Albums" list (Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" and that one is surprisingly too high, pun intended). On the other hand, I've already gone through all Pet Shop Boys albums (all of them are a 3). This isn't a criticism at all. I've given 16 albums a 5 rating, and many others received a 4. I got my third Brian Eno associated album yesterday, and I thought this album would be two Eno's in a row. But this one was after Eno got pissed and left the Roxy World. The opening track slaps, and then I started to miss Brian Eno. I doubt a song as wretched as "Bitter Sweet" would be here with his input. In fact, side 2 is some tough sledding. But there's more Roxy Music and A LOT more Brian Eno to come on this list. Actual rating is 2.5, but it's bumped up for the audacity of that album cover.
I have heard people talk about Roxy Music with great esteem, but I'm not sure I get it.
Disappointed Eno had left Roxy Music by this point. The result is fine, but nothing that sounds very interesting to me.
As with a lot of the music from the 70's, this really isn't my jam. With that said, it's not entirely unappealing either. The lead singer's got a decent voice, and the instrumentation is varied enough to keep it interesting. I'm giving this a low-3 stars.
ok, too arty for me in parts was ok
not bad
2nd listen.
May not be the place for me to start with Roxy Music.
Ok, not my favorite, but definitely a pretty important sound. They sound like an influence for Tame Impala ona. Few songs with their binaural tuning and stuff, same with some guitar bits. Went to their artist page and found some iconic 80s tunes of theirs and saved them.
not sure
Easy to listen to with a bit of funk.
Missed listening, will review now
Boring
Filled the background with noise.... I won't need to listen to it again
Enjoyable and interesting. Excellent in parts but a bit grating in others. A pretty solid 3 for me
Nie gehört aber gutes Album!
Gut bemerkenswert ist das Cover über dessen grad an Chauvinismus ich länger nachdenke als über die Musik. Im Kontext der Zeit und auch nicht eindimensional
Bonkers but entertaining enough
Very fun album. Although I liked the self-titled a little bit more.
Generally nice, but at the same time a bit too indistinguishable from noise (probably due to its rather offensive sound).
pleasant
I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I always had in the back of my mind that Bryan Ferry was a foppish dandy that should be ignored. But the album had more heft than i thought it would
Have listened before. Reinforced my opinion that Roxy Music have written some brilliant songs but I I prefer them all in one place on a Greatest Hits album.
Normalillo, igual me pilló sin ganas
3.5
Muy bien producido. Me lo esperaba más pausado.
A’ight
I wasn't familiar with this Roxy Music album, but really like some of their others. This didn't really grab me, and I gave it three listens. I don't know what's missing - it's not quite weird enough maybe? The lack of Eno? Fave track - "Casanova" - it had a little bit of that "In Every Dream Home a Heartache" swagger...
Nice.
New band to me.
very good
Started off strong but kinda lost me towards the end there. Cool to see Bryan Ferry’s roots though
Gött lite rock-ösigt med tydligt 70-tals sound. Gillart.
1974. Key Songs: The Thrill Of It All, Prairie Rose
It was fine, all the songs sounded similar. Was not the biggest fan of this.
This sure is a 70’s rock and roll album
Not sure what to make of this one. Music is a bit cliche and kind of all over the place thematically, too hit and miss for my liking 2/5
2/5 Distracting in a bad way.
Ei
Twice I’ve listened to this album now trying to fathom the main reason it’s on this list- maybe it’s the risqué album cover?!? Anyway it’s not bad but not great either. ‘The thrill of it all’ sounds decent as do a lot of the songs musically, I enjoyed ‘prairie rose’ too. unfortunately vocally and lyrically it’s not for me. I was bored and the album blended into one big sound. Best track- ‘the thrill of it all’ Worst track- ‘Casanova’ 5/10 middle of the road.
eh
My least favorite Roxy Music album. Praire Rose is a banger, the rest are very hit or miss, mostly miss.
Wow. I did not like this. Nothing worked for me except Phil Manzanera's guitar which was pretty great. Not great enough to make me listen again.
I know the cover. Never heard these songs so far and I don’t get the hype.
meh nada para destacar
"Casanova", "Bitter-Sweet" і "The Thrill of It All" - єдині треки які заслуговують на увагу. Все інше скіпаю. Оцінка: низька-середня 5
Great cover. Not so great music. 2/5.
BOOB!?!?!? OH NO WHAT'S HAPPENING IN MY PANTS!???!
Poxy music Like a really uncool, not talented Talking Heads
like being at a fancy party and not knowing what's going on
Not quite what I expected.
Nothing really stands out.
2.5
A bit dull
Previously unknown. It was OK. Sounded more modern than I expected.
Very strange. Experimental, with some interesting songs but overall not good. Claire not impressed
Album cover is the best part of this album lol
Regular, es art rock, el disco es escuchable, no lo vamos a negar, pero no me dice nada, no me transmite absolutamemte nada. Si lo tengo que definir en una sola palabra serie "vainilla" o "soso"
really liked one song, otherwise did not enjoy the singer's voice and the vibe
most guys are getting through this album because the album cover has titties and fair enough. A+ marketing. All I want is you is a banger tho
2,5
Couldn't wait for this to end
I enjoyed it in parts, but I don’t really like Bryan Ferry’s voice, idk why
ngl i lost it when it started going german 5.2/10
profoundly mid
Potpourri but if there was nice lemons and cinnamon mixed in with dog turds
I’m sorry but i just couldn’t
The Brits are at it again. I could convince myself this was a three despite the fact that soft rock is generally sand paper to my soul. However the weird review here where a guy here keeps comparing glam rock to women’s lingerie has left a bad taste in my mouth, so I’m bumping it down for that.
This is the second album I've had on this list from Roxy Music and I still can't put my finger on why other than it's an English band. There certainly don't need to be 3 on the list. The music is fine for what it is, but not as outstanding as I am being led to believe. They're highly regarded and I am guessing that's by people that were living through their existence and not listening to them 30-40yrs later. Everyone's tastes are different, but I much prefer the post-Roxy 80s music of Bryan Ferry to this. Also..... boobs.
this was the first album of my experience that i had a hard time listening to. It started out super fun and listenable, but went down hill so fast.
Please god tell me there are no more albums from Roxy Music on this list.
Apart from the last track a relatively dull album. Not keen on the singing voice or the singer. I expected more.
- Not my favourite Roxy Music, but a few good songs and some interesting instrumentation throughout, but especially on Out of the Blue. - The amount of instrumentation was a bit overwhelming, and made me feel anxious. - The songs didn't really make an impact on me, as I can't really remember them and I tried listening to this a few times. - I think the album cover sold more copies than the music did.
The album cover made me think it would at least be two women singing. It wasn't. I was utterly disappointed. The album is okay, but the disappointment was too much. 2/5
meh
I remember the album cover vividly; the music not so much.
I really really hope this is the third AND FINAL Roxy Music album I'll be listening to in the course of the challenge. I have established that I'm not into this. It's better than the previous two; I thought The Thrill Of It All was good, but it descends into more silly camp glam new wave and I just can't be bothered.
lol my fault for expecting grrl punk
Weirdly theatrical
All I Want Is You
Bäst är The thrill of it all.
2.5
Instrumentals were good
kinda meh tbh
0/10 bekannt 5/10 Beste Songs: the thrill of it all, all I want is you, Bitter Sweet
Atrociously boring.
Nothing special from this album. 2.7
Ok, Roxy Music. More 70's pop/rock. Dull/unmemorable. What is this doing here?
I have never been able to get into Roxy Music's arty pop rock. Gave this a careful listen. Still can't.
A few glimmers of the moody vibe I associate with Roxy Music, but this album was all over the place, and not in a good way.
Having already tried to work my way through Roxy Music’s discography, I’m not surprised that it still doesn’t click for me. And yet the album starts pretty well. I can easily acknowledge the influence Bryan Ferry had on the music of the 70s and beyond. But then… I lose interest quickly, too quickly. It’s eclectic and creative, sometimes even intriguing, but it leaves me with little to no emotion.
Not super familiar with him, aside from a few greatest hits, and gotta say this was disappointing. Not really sure who this is for. There no Steely Dan that is for sure.
Hit and miss for me.
The Thrill of It All All I Want is You
I preferred the later stuff.
I liked a few tracks from here, but more than half of the record was kind of meh. Favourite Track(s): If IT Takes All Night, A Really Good Time Least Favourite Track(s): All I Want Is You, Prairie Rose
Irgendwann im März 2026 ~ ein Wirrwarr an Momenten ~ Immer wieder probiert reinzukommen, aber ich kann mit dem Album nicht so viel anfangen.
Dienstag 10.03.2026 Spaziergang Domäne Dahlem vormittags, Philologische Bibliothek Obergeschoss
Weird album for me... Loved a couple songs like If it Takes All Night and Prairie Rose. But most of them just felt overdone, but not in the fun way like Queen. Not sure how to feel about it.
Ну в общем, ничего особенного я тут не услышала. Тетка с красивыми сиськами, улет 5/10
(3/7) mid
Not for me
It is a well produced, engineered, and instrumentally performed album of art/glam rock. The instrument choices certainly don't get boring. The album itself is neither pleasant nor unpleasant. Like Bryan Ferry's vocals, it just kind of croons in the same narrow bandwidth, no matter what else is going on. Plenty of okay to good hooks for the verses, but the chorus hooks never kick it up to the next level. A tad lyrically heavy for my tastes. I can see how this influenced both the hair metal and indie genres in the 80s and 90s. "Triptych" sounds like it might have influenced goth rockers that would arrive about a decade after the album. I did not add any tracks to my collection.
chaotic, like the soundtrack from a musical, but less melodic. not my cup of tea.
The background singers in "all I want" sound like the seagulls from Finding Nemo. This is what I imagine singing impersonators sound like when performing covers on cruise ships.
This album was… fine. I could see how someone could be into this music. Not a fan of the lead vocalist’s voice, though some of the instrumentation was enjoyable. Just kind of meh about it, so much so that I can’t really think of anything else to add.
Helt ok, ikke noe for meg. Sterk 2.
Tja
not for me
Not my jam
Poundland Bowie
Not my cup of tea. Didn't enjoy the voice and the songs were a bit all over the place. Disappointing.
I gave it one listen, and nothing really popped for me. There were a couple early songs I enjoyed, but the whole ordeal was a little underwhelming. 4/10
GOING IN: Not fussed really LISTENED WHILE: Morning coffee FAMILIARITY: Know the artist, not the album SKIP RATE: Played it straight through REPLAY VALUE: Once was plenty DISCOVERY CURVE: Never happened ALBUM ARC: Pretty even, consistent VERDICT: Fair enough BODY'S VERDICT: Statue mode My Rating: 2
Not sure you HAVE to listen this before you die, but I didn’t mind it
I don't understand the hype. Cloying voice and sounds pretty generic.
I barely remember this, the instrumentation was sometimes good but the vocals were bland and boring High 2
Some cool songs like I liked triptych. But felt repetitive and boring overall
Interesting and different, but not very good and some songs are sonically irritating/unpleasant. 2 - a good album but not my thing
2 out of 5 Some songs were chill but got very repetitive after awhile. Not a big fan of this.
Look I have come to LOVE Brian Eno, but does Roxy Music need 3 albums on here? That's just filler at this point. On "Out of the Blue" you can hear that Eno bass, which is distracting from an admittedly impressive guitar solo. I'd go as far as to say its just a tick or two below Free Bird, partially because the mix seems so muddy. The back to back of "Bittersweet" and "Triptych" took things in a trippy direction. I appreciate the experimentation, and at the same time it kinda lost me here. What's here that I havent heard on a million other 70's albums? Maybe a 3/5 on substance alone, but I’ve gotta 2-bomb this thing for not being the best of the THREE Roxy Music records on this list smh
I enjoyed it for the most part but I also didn’t care to listen to the entire album. All of it is a bit the same. I did like Out of the Blue because there were parts that reminded me of Tame Impala’s older work. Overall, would listen to if mixed into a playlist of other stuff but probably won’t listen to the actual album again.
Wowie this is bad. His voice is so terrible and the production is really muddy. I knew Roxy Music was bad, and they just keep getting worse with every album I hear. How are they so acclaimed? They're God awful.
I listened. It was okay. I won’t listen to it again.
70s rock that sounds 80s
Listened to the first 2 songs then the holidays started… again didn’t love it
Holidays
There is a lot of good rock bands and albums from this era. This isn't anywhere close to the top for me. The slow rhythms just don't really work well enough to get me interested in wanting to keep listening or hear more.
Kind of horny. Overall a bit weird. Not my cup of tea.
Not a fan
I know I should like it. I like so many bands that cite them as an influence. I listened to it twice. Could not get anything out of it. ☹️
Cool album cover, wasn’t super into the music. I listened to it last week and have really forgotten what it was. So I’ll say forgettable.
It's weird because I love singers in bands who were obviously influenced by Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music. David Byrne from the Talking Heads and Ric Ocasek from the Cars are two examples. But these singers have only picked up on the good parts of his voice. That vibrato he does at the end of every note is hard to handle. That said, if they had a singer that I liked this could be a four-star album. But if I can't get past the vocals, I can't get into the music. So the best I could do is two stars. The songs aren't that memorable either.
It was ok. Maybe a bit dated.
Boobs lmao
it feels to me like there is not much social about this other than the obvious
This is listenable but not for me
bleh
Oh my God. Titties. HYGYESSSSSS. In a continuing trend of this list dredging up artists I listened to a long, long time ago, the last Roxy Music album I listened to was nearly 250 albums ago - probably the largest album gap I've had to date. I haven't been living a Roxy Music-less existence to this point, however. I've rolled three Brian Eno albums in the lead up to this triumphant return. I don't remember much about Roxy Music's debut beyond it having some weird vocals and being decent at points. Hopefully this final album from their included discography will leave a stronger impression. This album kind of came and went, I'll be real. I can respect the unusual instrumentation and quirky vocal styles, though there isn't much going on here which hooks me. Still, not a terrible listen overall. "The Thrill of it All" is a good opener. The guitars are pretty sweet. The vocals less so, but it averages out to a good tune overall. "Out of the Blue" has some similarly good guitars, and I like the dub-esque percussion in the background. "Bitter Sweet" has a nice, sombre sound. I like the delicate piano. "Casanova" has a fun vocal style, and the funky instrumental is pretty cool, too. Book time. A bit of a transformation within their sound. That's about it. Wikipedia says that this album is "among the band's most sophisticated and consistent", charted well in the Yookay and has a respectable critic backing. Hmmmm. I can probably let this one slip by. It's pretty unique-sounding, even if I don't feel much towards this album. I cosign the inclusion.
No private session used for Spotify. Never got into Roxy Music and this album cover reeks of desperation, I like it and have spent too much time admiring it, but it seems like if the music was great they wouldn't need to have a cover like this. Anyway, the way the dude sang bothered me, music wasn't bad though. I listened to it twice, but I won't listen to it again, might enjoy the album cover some more though.
I really enjoy the music in particular the bass lines. The singing can be good but it can also be grating and repetitive.
This site needs a NSFW filter, I listen to my daily album at work! Did people buy this because of the cover? Synthy pop, some Elvis, some ren-faire. Was ok. 2*

I just don't like Roxy.
not a fun time
Pretty average glam rock
I hate when male bands have women as the album cover and no women are singing
I've heard of this band. Not sure i have listened to much of their stuff. First track is decent. Nothing that flies out of the speakers for me. Eh.
Best cover they ever did. (Not the best album though)
Album art is nice. Album itself is forgettable.
not a fan. i think i liked the other one we’ve listened to by them better
I like Roxy Music but have never listened to this one before. I didn't find it very engaging. 2.5 stars
Title track is cool, rest is just alright
👍
What’s the appeal of sophistication? A striving for an unattainable lifestyle of the idle rich? A perfection of the form, enabled by years of study and mastery? I don’t dislike later Roxy Music, Avalon is a legit triumph, but the glam rock era just...it’s like a James Bond film, all glitz and cheeky action in service of what exactly? The vibe and feel, I can see how that all must’ve been exciting for a brief window, but even then, was it all that outside of the UK? Listening to these records, which I am clamouring to find catchy songs or hooky melodies anywhere, it’s again that phenomenon of being told about a really crazy party someone went to that defined their entire personality. That Ferry, a working class-born striver himself would eventually become a lite-Tory really completes the picture of sophistication’s empty promise.
What did I expect with this album? Well, not what it actually turned out to be. It's not country, that's for sure. I wasn't really impressed by this album. It was okay. Quirky. Creative. I really don't care for the vocalist, and the only standout to me was the bassist.
complicated. kinda catchy. vocals. brass.
As usual with Roxy Music, the music in itself is _fine_ but it just doesn't engage me, even when I'm trying to find things to appreciate with the music. I guess it's just not my thing 2/5
Automatic one star deduction for the album cover.
Bit shit
Way too close to Billy Joel boring for my taste.
My stepdad had this album and for years I just assumed he didn't let me listen to it because of the cover. Now I know he was just protecting me from the music.
2,2/5
Good 80’s band. Good music, and sound.
Like many people my age, I have bought albums based on ONE single and have been terribly disappointed because that's the only decent track on the album. This is the kind of album that younger me (fuck it; me today) would buy based on the cover art. The difference between this album and the former is that there's at least one track on the album I liked. While very much suited for elevators, I don't think I could bring myself to trap people in a box and force this on them if I owned an elevator. This album kinda sucks ⭐⭐
This did almost nothing for me.
Did not like it
No thanks.
Not as great as I remember
👀
not my cup of tea
Little too glam for me
Listening to Roxy Music feels the same as listening to the xx. These are people who are too cool for me and would roll their eyes if I was sat next to them at a fancy restaurant
Not much there beyond the album cover
It's fine, not that special for me though
Much more theatrical. I liked their first release better, it had a little bit more edge and grittiness to it. At least if I'm remembering it correctly. Not for me.
This is the first Roxy Music album I didn't love on the first few listens. Not sure why. When I need a Roxy fix these days, it rarely is the one I play. When compared to the first two, the songs pale in comparison. Perhaps the middle of the road direction they took after Eno left was not a direction I was on at the time. I tend to lean towards the first 3 albums of their catalogue these days.
This thing sounds pretty incredible. None of the songs are super sticky but you can tell this is 4-6 very talented people making good music even if there are not very many Good Songs on this record.
Hot album cover
High 2s, enjoyable. Iconic of the time.
Good but not quite my vibe
Boring dad rock with synths as a saving grace
Never got into this tbh
Much better than the last Roxy music a lot of shit at least some redeeming songs
I've never heard of this band, so I was excited that this might be an album by a rock group lead by women bc of the cover but it was the 70s so it's just dude rock. This list greatly underrepresents women artists. That's not really Roxy Music's fault though. I found this album to be mid. Nothing stood out to me, but it wasn't unpleasant either. The lyrics were a whiplash going from songs about religion to love songs to break up songs. It was exhausting in a way that didn't leave me satisfied. Also, I just generally want to leave religion out of my rock music.
Didn't really excite me, they have a solid enough sound, just didn't overly enjoy it.
It’s ok. I preferred the Avalon album. This one is less ethereal but I can hear what is to come.
This is the third record by Roxy Music that a got. There's 3 on the list. It's a transitional album towards the smoother style of their later work, which is not on the list because it's not very good. The album probably influenced bands like Pulp and maybe Duran Duran. I like the other albums, but I don't like this one very much. Favorite song: All I want is you.
Not good - not one song on this album that I cared for
This is a little too over-dramatic 70s music for me, but there were highlights including the bass playing. Liked Songs Added: Out Of The Blue
2/5
meh. did nothing for me really
Not bad, but a bit dated (as per the album cover)
This cover always had quite the impression on me. But I had never taken the time to sit down with the music behind, so here I am now. The first track is quite good from the get go. By track four (with an open and unfatigued mind), the album proves to be satisfactory. That bassline on Out of The Blue makes the song. After that, the back-half varies with some songs that pass me by and some that I do enjoy. The arrangements on this album are ambitious which is a word I can use to describe Roxy Music as a whole. But I don't know if this record has tons of staying power besides a handful of tracks. By the end, I feel as if I could've gotten more besides the tits and bush on the cover. Prairie Rose does end well however. (5/10, 2/5 on this scale)
it's like whatever. i liked the bad german!
I know you aren't supposed to judge an album by the cover but this one just really gave me some ick from the start. The naked women gave me no insights into the music but then as I listened it made me feel a little incel vibe, like I am weird and strange but now that I have money I can get hot women to pose naked for me. Also what did this have to do with "Country Life." The music on its own was okay, but nothing was special or different.
low 2, please stop putting roxy music on this list i don’t get it
Pre-listening thoughts: whatever I did not care about Roxy Music’s last album. Why are they on the list three times???? Post/during listening thoughts: am I supposed to form an opinion about this? It’s so generic and unexciting. Turns out Brian Eno wasn’t a part of this one but idc Roxy music is still his project so I am continuing my beef with him. I liked the opening track and then liked everything that came after it a lot less. 4/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: The Thrill of It All Least fav tracks: If It Takes All Night, Triptych
They've never quite done it for me - shades of Bowie and Sparks, but nowhere near as good. That's not to say that this is an entirely rubbish album, there's plenty of interesting moments, but as a whole package, it's just not as clever or as important as you suspect everyone involved believed it was.
This is my second Roxy Music album, and I had higher expectations. Some songs were okay but overall the album felt derivative. Will give it another listen at some point.
