Pretty solid, surprised I rated the last one so low
Surprisingly enjoyed this! 2.7
Rock, nothing too notable
Don’t love this record, but I get it. 3/5
Lukewarm pop rock. Noisy, uncontrolled, uninventive.
Enjoyed this
There's some good ones on here, but also some very meh ones. 3/5
Good glam rock album. Reminds me of David Bowie which makes sense as he was also making similar music at this time.
7/10. There is something about Roxy Music that just doesn't hit me the same way that other 1970's rock bands do, and I don't know what it is, nor do I know why. I feel the same way about Brian Eno's solo work. I love similar artists to both of them, but I just don't get Roxy Music and Brian Eno.
Very Bowie-esque, very listenable
nothing entirely remarkable about this album, some moments were nice, but this just felt like background filler/grocery store mall music. Not gonna return probably
Meh. Triptych was the most enjoyable
Naja, war ok.
I have always been a pretty hardcore fan of Roxy Music. Didn't happen to have this album so was looking forward to it. Not sure I missed much to be honest. Maybe I am just in a funk or IDK? But for some reason I just was like "normal" with it, as a fan, sure it is listenable. But as a way to introduce the band to the unknown masses? Probably not. It is good for a fan, OK for an unfamiliar listener, and won't work for someone unsure of the genre or style in the first place. I will stop short of saying I was disappointed, but won't put in on my favorites list either.
Opening track was super strong, but didn't quite keep up the momentum.
Similar to another Roxy Music album I’ve had here, I enjoyed the style of music but felt it was easy to tune out. Great background music, nice production. 3.25/5
Some weird songs, but not as many as on For Your Pleasure.
Not bad but not as good as some of their other albums.
Very rude cover but the songs were generally good.
3 5 for the Cover.
Country Life by Roxy Music is a bit different to their more recent albums but still a great blend of glam rock and art rock, showing the band's sophisticated sound and Bryan Ferry's charismatic, crooning vocals. The album is bold, atmospheric, and richly textured, with best tracks like "The Thrill of It All" and "Out of the Blue." A must-listen for fans Mr Ferry and the gangs recent stuff, and where it all started.
A lot going on but still enjoyable.
This was a different and enjoyable listen. I was not familiar with this band. Not quite enough to round up here but better that your run of the mill 3. 3.5/5
So are those chics in the band or….? Anyways, this was ok, prob just not really for me. Honestly the fist song felt like it went on forever, and by then I was kinda switched off.
So this is my second Roxy Music album I’ve gotten. The first one was their debut, conveniently titled Roxy Music. I remember really enjoying that album, as it felt unique and ahead of its time. I felt the same way about this album. But for some reason, I wasn’t into this one as much as the debut. It’s still pretty good, don’t get me wrong. Prairie Rose and The Thrill Of It All are bangers. And the variety displayed here is impressive. No two tracks really sound alike. But these tracks didn’t really stick with me as I thought they would. They mostly get a “that’s neat” from me. Though that might be for the best considering the album cover. I don’t think I want to listen to something and have that image on my phone for anyone in a 3-foot radius of me to see. Favorite track: Prairie Rose Other hits: The Thrill Of It All, All I Want Is You, Out of the Blue, Casanova
Album cover was the best part of the album
They're like Gammon... I would never choose it, but when I do it's nice...
This exceeded my subterranean expectations but still not worth returning to. 2.5/5
Roxy is one of those groups with a rabid fan base and I just don’t get it.
Not their best, but pretty good.
It's alright.
Why? Again? I feel like I've listened to 200 albums that sound like this during this journey. This is a fine album. Track wise it doesn't really feel too repetitive. I don't care for the vocals for the most part. Decent harmonica playing. The saxophone is annoying. I'm feeling grumpy. This might be better but I'm not in the mood to keep trying to process it.
It started really good, then it went slightly worse but it's still a decent album.
The music is pretty fun but it's very 70s hipsters with Bela Lugosi singing
Not bad
This is decent! Couple of odd tracks - but generally fun. Also boobs.
meh
This has some decent prog rock moments but also a ridiculous song about Texas. It's a fine album I guess, but it's not a great sign when the most memorable thing about an album isn't the music.
I dont know how this album is on this list, might be that the sometimes coked up always horrible singer turned me off but the album was just not worth trying to listen to, didnt grab me in any way, only memorable moment was the harmonica solo in if it takes all night if thats even the right song idk. Harmonica was pretty turnt, made me bob my head and say ohhhh yuuurmp, and the gitar and music in general was pretty good all throughout, but why would i ever listen to this album when i could listen to Dirt instead
I definitely hear how this influenced other artists. New wave and New Romantics especially, along with Glam artists as well.
Previously rated: Roxy Music (4/5) For Your Pleasure (2/5) ************************** Looks like this one's falling somewhere in between the first two. Nice album cover, some good music (bass especially), and a pretty good variety. Still don't love the singer's voice or style much.
It’s not bad! But without Eno’s deft touch it’s missing something.
Not my kind of music, still sounds ok
if one piece is peak, the other is mid. Good album, even great at times, but it falls short of the god tier glam rock album I took this for in passing.
If you 2 scantily clad women on my album cover then your music better be hot, sexy, and horny af.... and this wasnt but it's okay
put some clothes on - pretty alright music but nothing bonkers
Interesting album and singing style, probably won't re-listen
Favorites: All I Want Is You, Bitter Sweet, Casanova This was released in 1974?! Feels pretty dang innovative. I've heard a lot about Roxy Music but hadn't listened until now. I see the influence, I see the creativity. I think this is a good album, but not as many songs stood out as I had hoped. Going to stick with 3 stars here. Kudos to the album art, though, for making me act all dodgy while listening at work. 🙃
Good start but it dragged by the 4th track and never got back on track. 3.5/5
As many know, this band has tiers. The Eno years, although I'm not a particular fan of his, we're this bands best. Avalon, their last album was a renaissance of sorts, but the records in between are just basic great art rock.
This aged so well. Rare album where I like the second half more than the first.
Vähän tasapaksuksi jäi 3/5
Ei suuremmin säväyttänyt. 3/5
Look I'm not trying to be a creep, but this is a pretty great cover. And not just because... ya know. I mean, it's not NOT because that. Like I'm all for that. But it's more than that. For instance, I really like how the text is actually kind of bad and near unreadable. Man, okay, I don't know. It's a godo cover. Anyway, I've listened to this a few times now and it's growing on me.
I feel Roxy Music never got their due here in the U.S. as much as they did in the U.K. This is a good listen, although prefer their first album.
I was surprised at the quality of this. I never heard Roxy Music before and generally found thelis album to have a diverse array of styles and (usually) more of a modern sound. Some songs came off as a bit dated and underwhelming but all around good. 3.2/5 -> 3/5
Interesting enough. Slightly more interesting than conventional rock but also less fun.
I’m on the fence with the album. The album cover throws me for a loop because the music is very theatrical. It’s just unusual but well executed.
Dès le premier morceau, "The Thrill of It All", on est happé. "All I Want Is You" est un tube pop parfait, accrocheur, presque joyeux.
This album was good. Fine. ok! Lots of fun! Big songs and big sounds! I don't think I'm going to rush to listen to it again though.
Artier side of glam rock. Comes out firing with the first song with some fire and a powerful but nimble bass like. Ferry is a unique singer that can be captivating at times. The musical interplay, which is an interesting combo of guitars, bass, violin/strinfs, synths, brass or oboe or something? - was more interesting than the songs necessarily. there are some pretty strong instrumental moments. Overall a decent listen but not too impactful to me.
This is a fun one. I dug it.
Album I've heard about, and of course seen a lot of the cover somehow (wonder why) but never actually dug into roxy music other than on occasional underwhelming youtube top of the pops exploration. I also though big brian eno was more involved with these boys but i guess he was just keyboard and left before this album. Anyway its kinda pointless. A John Cale song (fear is man's best friend I think) came on after, and before I realized the album had ended I was thinking they'd suddenly gotten good in the weird way I hoped they'd be. Alas, despite awesome things like having an oboist they never make songs worth it.
It’s sounds like an album I’d like but I couldn’t get anything to stick - maybe it needs more time. Yet by the metrics I’m judging other records it’s forgettable and same-y and no matter how cool Brian Ferry might be - it’s not a good LP.
Some fun one on here but not super memorable for me
I don't know how else to describe it other than "theatrical". I don't know if that even makes sense but it seems like they are playing roles more so than just playing instruments. Very interesting album with a wide variety of styles and pace. Extra bonus points for boobs
Snobby art rock with a leaning more towards the rock. Yes, Bryan Ferry's vocal affectation can seem a tad O.T.T. it fits the music perfectly – I could do without the ironic polka though. Imagine yourself on a bigger yacht with cooler people than you would be if hanging out with other 70's rock stars - this album would be playing. Best Tracks: The Thrill Of It All; All I Want Is You; Casanova
I wasn’t sure about this album when it popped up, because I’m sick to death of 70s music. I have to say, at first, I was very pleasantly surprised! I don’t think that it sounded like stereotypical 70s music, it was very interesting and unique. For the first half of the album, I was leaning towards a four star rating, but I think the back half really declined in quality, in my opinion. I’d probably give this a 3.5 if I could, because I do you think that it is a good, interesting example of 70s rock music that isn’t the stereotypical organ rock.
Nice 70s sound. I wanted to like it but probably won’t listen again.
Started off strong but got boring
Spent the first half of this album really trying to understand the appeal of these. But the second half made up for it when things got slightly stranger, especially Bitter Sweet and Triptych. Ive definitely heard better from these, but its ok. Will be back for a few tracks but not all
Had two albums now and I'm still not sure where I stand on Roxy Music. They have parts which sound brilliant combined with others that are awful. While I'd say on the whole they are interesting enough for a listen I think this sort of art rock needs to be much more consistent to really interest me. Given that the Brian Eno album we had is brilliant I'll choose to believe the good bits are his and the rest are Ferry's.
Out of the Blue is a clear inspiration for both The Cure and The Smiths. Love hearing that kind of thing. Prairie Rose, too, is very Johnny Marr. Don’t love this record, but I get it. 3/5
I probably found the cover the most exciting part about this album. It was okaaaay, I don’t even mind Bryan Ferry’s voice but this was fairly mid for me
I don't know what it is but I am always underwhelmed by Roxy Music. "Avalon" and "More Than This" are OK background music or for studying or sleeping or something. Otherwise I find them pretty meh. Highlight here is "Out of the Blue" which has a Bowie-ness to it.
did not expect to see brian eno in this album
Uhhhhhh I LOVE the album cover obviously! Sexy AF lol. Never heard of these guys. By the name of the album I thought it was going to be country. And by the album cover I thought it was going to be chicks singing. But nope was wrong on both counts. It's rock and sounds decent. didn't get through the album.
Eclectic and interesting but not my favorite.
Pretty indifferent
I’m not quite sure what to make of this. It’s a pretty nice listen overall. A little strange. Much like their other album I had I guess. It’s not going to be a re-visit, but I’m glad I spent the time with it, and got to get a better feel for the band.
pretty fresh and pleasant to listen to, yet nothing too fancy or engaging
As many have already pointed out, the cover art is far more exciting than the album and I'm inclined to say they're not wrong. It's an alright album but nothing to write home about. I wish I could give it an even 2.5/5, but since that's not an option, I'll bump it up to a 3 for making me feel like I'm doing something inappropriate with the cover art on my work computer.
One song sounds like the Stones, the next Bowie.. not really sure what they would sound like intrinsically. Not bad not great for me
Out of the Blue++ Pour le chorus final. Donc plutôt bonne découverte, mais l'album a aussi des morceaux plus faibles vers la fin, trop standard (If It Takes All Night), ou inattendus (Bitter-Sweet) mais pas forcément en bien. =>3/5
at their best at the time
Okay, bit still disppointing
This is the second Roxy album I’ve heard, with the first being their debut, and I can easily say that this is not as good. Songs like the intro, “All I Want is You”, and “Casanova” are fairly uninteresting in the grand scheme of what Roxy Music has accomplished, although I do think the latter two are pretty decent songs. Other than those, the rest of the album (for the most part) evokes a similar creative spirit that their debut does. “Three and Nine” brings a whimsical energy, “If It Takes a Night” shows off their bluesier side, and songs like “Bitter Sweet” and the penultimate “A Really Good Time” showcases the band doing what they do best: making weirdo, unpredictable songs kinda catchy.
Solid album. Good flow. Not nearly as good as their first album though. It's lacking the originality that it had then. 3.5/5
Didn't really need multiple albums from this group but here we are...
Boring slow pop-rock.
:)
Pretty good actually. Lol. New to me. Distracting cover art. Hahaha
Considered one of Roxy Music’s best and most consistent album apparently. Leaves me a bit cold and never draws me in. 3/5
Last third is much stronger than the rest of the album imo
Fun
Some unexpectedly interesting tracks here, which muted the annoying vocals a somewhat, but not enough for me to particularly like it. Stand-out: Three and Nine
I have always struggled to get into early Roxy Music. Nothing on the album grabbed me, but it probably deserves a deeper listen.
I support the censoring, these nipples are ugly Started good. Occasional sax was nice. Got a bit boring towards the end
Solid
Such a shame that my first encounter with Roxy Music on this list was For Your Pleasure, because everything else just seems faded in comparison.
I like art rock. I like glam. But for some reason, Roxy Music doesn't draw me in, even though I think I should like them. I liked the other two albums on the 1001 more than this one (maybe because those albums had Eno? Hard to say, but possible), but even those took "work" to appreciate. Regardless of the album, Bryan Ferry has a great and unique voice and I really enjoy Phil Manzanera's guitar work, but I felt there aren't a lot of standout moments on this album and even most of the good songs are uneven. For example, The Thrill of It All is a good rocker, but it felt like it went on and on without much change. Three and Nine, All I Want Is You, and If It Takes All Night didn't do much for me. Out of the Blue had some great moments - I liked the intro, but then the initial vocal part was underwhelming (the recording quality may be an issue?). That said, it's got a wild violin solo I really liked (no surprise - Eddie Jobson is pretty amazing). On the second side, Bitter-Sweet is fantastic - the only track on the album that I felt was unequivocally great. The rest were only ok. I feel like this is a 3.5, but I'm going to round down because it was underwhelming compared to their earlier albums and because it took a real close listen just to get to a 3.5 rather than a 3.
Decently done. Fun to listen to. Sounds along the lines of Bowie or Talking Heads. Wouldn’t change the station but wouldn’t buy it.
Classic but feels a bit dated now
Sounds more like new wave than disco or aor of its day. Pretty surprised by how much I liked it
This is pretty good. I like a lot of their music but have never really listened too much.
could i write poetry to this? n
Some good stuff, but plenty of misses
It was fine
How the hell did this ever chart as “country”?!
Liked this more than I thought I would, but probably won't listen again
Swäg
booba
It has some good jams, it's very dadly though. Will I listen to again: 30%
4th album. I dont know which are on here but the previous 3 are all better than this. Still like it a little though.
The beginning is okay, then there's too much sax, then it sounds like a Disney villain
Umm I don't have anything to say.. okay I guess
This one was very good musically but the vocals were a bit theatrical
Liked it for the cover. Liked it for the music.
Bijzondere album cover 👀
Pretty much in the middle. Not awful and not great. But I wouldn't choose to listen to this again.
Not my favourite Roxy Music album.
I do love Roxy Music and this had some great tunes but I was brought up on For your Pleasure so that speaks to me more. Casanova was my standout on here. Brian Ferry was always a beautiful, dapper man with a fantastic voice. This is probably more a 3.5 for me…
Not terribly exciting.
I very much enjoy a lot of Roxy Music but I don't think Country Life merits being on this list.
Honestly the opening and closing tracks were pretty strong. Everything in-between kinda lost me though. It's important for an album to keep and maintain momentum (if that even exists in music), and I think this loses its way just a teensy bit. The sound feels ahead of its time for the most part, though. A lot of the melodies and overall song construction feel at home in 80s/90s alt rock/britpop (artsy and a bit lengthy, perhaps a big inspiration to those later artists?)
I don't have much to say. It was good, not great. Last song was good
Jumping back into this album reviewing thing! I enjoyed the sounds of this album but none of the songs really stood out to me. A solid 3.
This was an interesting one. Some songs I really dug. Other songs I couldn’t wait for them to be over. Firmly in the 3 range Fav Songs: The Thrill Of It All If It Takes All Night Cassanova
Mostly average fare, there was one song when I went huh this is a bit different but other than that very standard rocky stuff
Couple of bangers on this one
This album is not spectacular, just average old rock, album art +1.
The Thrill Of It All and Bitter Sweet are good, but that's about it.
Hmm. It’s not quite there for me. Out of the Blue has a classic art / prog rock feel to it. But a lot of it doesn’t hit for me.
Totally fine!
Pretty good. First half is stronger. Enjoyed The Thrill Of It All, Out Of The Blue, Triptych, and Prairie Rose.
Musically, it had some fun parts. Not really a fan of the vocals
Hehe bobba
No Brian but it has the swagger of a Ferry before they hit the lounge singers forum.
Another one of those 70s glam records. Not really bad, but I struggle to remember any of the songs. 3/5
It's fine! I get why people like it! But, it feels more like what would happen if Pulp started a T Rex cover band.
Never heard of Roxy Music but the album seems pretty good!
Oh okay the naked women have nothing to do with the actual album, oh and country life isn’t indicative of a country album it’s rock and not mellow rock either it’s full on rock. This was so strange I’m obligated by my own moral values to give it 0 stars, unfortunately I can’t do that. Seriously wasn’t a terrible album though, generic rock music id buy the album (because of the titties not because of the music) none the less I enjoyed listening to it which I can say about few other albums on this list Favorite: the thrill of it all, out of the blue Least favorite: Bitter Sweet Notable exception: a really good time starts like shit takes a real sharp turn into one of the best tracks in the album 3.8/5
Auch 70er, reißt mich aber nicht so mit. Bryan Ferry.
I kind of like All I Want Is You and almost like Prairie Rose
I was very much hooked at the start but after a while I wanted a bit more from it. I Love the art rock genre generally and this is still a very good album, just not as good as I thought it was going to be after a few tracks. Fav tracks: - The Thrill of it all - All I want is you - Out of the Blue
actually really vibed with this i wasnt expecting it from the cover but it was a solid album. 3.5
Just not my style. Not a terrible album overall.
3.5
Nothing really noteworthy, bit weirder than I thought...6/10
A little dysfunctional on the structure, but a few highlights of the 70s buried within. Can somewhat hear an Ackles influence.
Not quite sure what l expected from this but I feel like I somehow didn't get all of what I thought I should be getting. And no, that's not what she said...
First time listening to this band at all, and I hadn't even heard of their name before this, which I found odd as I am a bit of a music-phile. Anyway. The opener "The Thrill of It All" is bombastic and has some nice backing orchestral stuff going on. Found out one of the guys in the band plays violin, so that's cool. The first few songs on Country Life feel like art rock meets southern rock with Ric Ocasek-eseque vocals. The back half of the album goes more into art rock weirdo territory so I can't give this album more than 3 stars but did dig a few songs. Interesting factoids from Wikipedia: *"Shot by Eric Boman, the Country Life cover features two scantily-clad models, Constanze Karoli and Eveline Grunwald...The cover image was controversial in some countries, including the United States and Spain, where it was censored for release. As a result, early releases in the US were packaged in opaque shrink wrap; a later American LP release of Country Life (available during the years 1975–80) featured a different cover shot. Instead of Karoli and Grunwald posed in front of some trees, the reissue used a photo from the album's back cover that featured only the trees. In Australia, the album was banned in some record stores, while others sold each copy inside a black plastic sleeve. Author Michael Ochs has described the result as the "most complete cover-up in rock history" " Standouts: The Thrill of It All, All I Want Is You, Out of the Blue, If it Takes All Night
I kinda enjoyed it. Little art rock weirdness here and there. Not really any great songs but not really any bad songs either. Relatively pleasant. 2.71 stars
The more guitar an synths there is, the more I like it. Sadly, there isn’t too much of that.
Ágætis Roxy plata og áhrifn á eitísið augljós. Fyrri hlutinn betri. Finnst hún samt ekki jafn góð og For your pleasure.
Like the sound but the songs didn’t hook me
Day32 - i don’t remember roxy music growing up but i’ve been catching up the last 5 years or so.
Buen álbum
Okay, solid. Some fun bass and horns. I wouldn’t have thought to put this in the turn table but it amused me.
good band, meh album
Brian Ferry sounds like he's doing a character. It lacks emotional depth and clarity for me. Not very sincere, but it feels like that's kind of the point (?). Songs aren't very memorable. That being said, Phil Manzanera is extremely good on here. Out of the Blue is a GREAT song though! And you can here the New Wave influence in a lot of this. Not awesome.
01) The Thrill Of It All - 7,0 02) Three and Nine - 7,0 03) All I Want Is You - 7,5 04) Out Of The Blue - 7,5 05) If It Takes All Night - 6,5 06) Bitter-Sweet - 8,0 07) Triptych - 7,0 08) Casanova - 6,5 09) A Really Good Time - 6,5 10) Prairie Rose - 6,5 TOTAL: 7,00 (70/100) Only "Bitter-Sweet" stands out a bit for me, the rest is more or less the same and not very exciting. Actually, quite boring album.
I know and like a lot of Roxy Music songs, but have never listened to one of their albums - today's the day. It's, as expected, glammed out maximalist rock for the most part, with little dips into some surprising territory (honky tonk, German cabaret?!). I love to imagine bands being like "what about this, this sounds cool!" for a whole album. The glam jams worked best for me, The Thrill of it All and Casanova.
Clearly on this list because booba. Nowhere near as interesting or fun as the cover.
Love this album
I want to give this a 2.5. Roxy Music just don’t do it for me and I am really not sure why. And all the men commenting on the boobs in their review is pathetic
Quirky, sometimes catchy and overall good bass. 3.5
Good But not as good as debut album Takes risks But not as many as the debut album Has songs, but none as good as Love is the Drug. Either high 3 or just about a 4. Leaning 4
Some of this was alright. But the 80s Brit scene playlist is wearing thin. I recognize my reviews have suffered for it, and I understand the purpose of this list is to broaden horizons. There's times where I've underappreciated influence based on my own sensibilities and modern comparisons. Maybe this is one.
I’ll never not find Bryan Ferry’s way of singing annoying but there’s some good songs on there
#77 As a Roxy Music fan I enjoyed the album, lots of early 70's influenced (i.e. Lou Reed) but form me "Avalon" remain their gold standard.
Definitely a solid classic rock sounding album. It may just be me, but there even with solid songwriting, cool arrangements and solid playing, there is nothing that actually stands out too much to me about this album. Maybe it was unique/groundbreaking for its time but otherwise it doesn't get me anywhere new.
On “The Thrill of It All,” Roxy Music sounds like this surging, living thing. I can’t always make out every individual instrument. It’s this churning sea of sound with piano and guitar and saxophone occasionally jumping out of the mix. It’s really cool! The rock songs on this album are awesome. I’m not so crazy about the theatrical numbers. “Bitter Sweet” and “Triptych” feel like classic ‘skip’ tracks.
How about this album cover? Wow! I like the first track. It's a great start- high energy in the instruments and high energy in the vocals. Plus some 1970's cop film string parts? Sweet! The album has some nice blues rock moments like in "If It Takes All Night", and some funny orchestral / stage musical moments like on "Bitter Sweet". I feel like overall this album had a bunch of ideas that I liked but not too many that I would say really made me love the record as a whole. I think if I came back and listened I would like it more though!
Erg chill!
I never know what to make of Roxy Music. This is maybe the first time I've listened to Country Life but I've heard other albums and I never know how to process it. It's not bad, and I don't even really dislike it. But I'm always scratching my head at why it has a reputation for being so influential to so many different types of musicians. I wasn't there, but I'd like to understand it. Country Life did not answer my questions. Fine music, the album was nicely paced and hung together very well. It's a 3.
It was fine? I didn’t love the lead singers voice, but I mostly liked the music. I did like how the instrumentation included some instruments not commonly heard in rock bands.
lyrics and vocals meh, music pretty good
Fun to some degree. Enjoyable and good execution
I never got into Roxy Music despite the ease with which that happened for so many of the bands they influenced and some of their contemporaries that shared some of their aesthetics. This record was good, but also it didn't grab me. Maybe it was the listening day? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Perfectly fine I guess.Nothing standout.
Some of this was pretty bland but i particularly liked the songs that became a bit weird. "Bitter Sweet" had fun tempo changes and switched to German in the middle! Not as weird "In Every Dream A Heartache" from "For Your Pleasure" but still it was something. Overall i thought this was ok album with a few good traditional songs in the mix. My favourite was "Out Of The Blue" but the opening track "The Thrill Of It All" was also good. Roxy Music again manages to have a fun Album Cover. I feel this is a strong 3.
Started out rough. Didn't like it at all. About three songs in it started to grow on me. By the end it redeemed itself a little.
Pretty nice. Didn't really grab me too much, I'll admit, but pleasant enough, no doubt. Feels like a 3.5 for now.
Out of the Blue is very strong with great solos but followed up by some eclectic tracks, Bitter Sweet being particularly odd. Good finish though. There's enough highs here.
Favorite Songs: The Thrill of it all The intro of the first song really catches me and left me hopeful for a complex and interesting album. Unfortunately I found it quite monotone. It’s not bad by any means but also not mindblowing.
Generally a fan of the band, but this album is a bit out there in terms of the instrumentation and musical direction. I prefer more straightforward and sparse material from these guys. Love Bryan Ferry's voice, though, it's always so distinctive.
Honestly not bad, some enjoyable tracks but nothing special
It's ok, didn't grab me. Nice album art
One of the more internally-polarizing albums from this projet so far. It feels immediately contemporary, and songs really jumepd out, but I did bump a little bit on the more show-y parts. I plan to revisit to see what really holds vs. what I will let go of. 3.5/5
Hell yeah. Sound great as a band. Loved the drums and guitar. Songwriting not so strong, slipping into novelty on some tracks.
Haven't heard anything like this before. Needed 2 listens to fully absorb this one. Despite being extremely corny at times, the musicianship and originality are certainly there. 3 pairs of panties out 5 🩲🩲🩲
Not a huge punk fan, wasn’t my kind of album and probably won’t listen to again.
Pretty standard 70s rock
3.5, good album, Favourite Tracks: Casanova, Thrill Of It All. Felt quite uplifting though didn't pay too close attention to the lyrics.
Top 3 Songs: 1 - Out Of The Blue (4) 2 - The Thrill of it All (2) 3 - Bitter Sweet (6)
Not really my bag.
I have never listended to Roxy Music, I like it.. Elvis vibes in one of the singers from time to time. Again this is a 3,5, but to be fair to the rest of my notes, I will put a 3.
Not bad, just not that good. Smack bang on a 3. Brilliant cover though (obviously).
I had heard of Roxy Music but not sure I had ever heard a song, definitely nothing from Country Life. That makes context hard. It sounds like it’s way before it’s time. It sounds very 80s with its synths and spacey blow out guitars. You can heard their influence on late Led Zeppelin. I love Out of the Blue and the opener. But most of the album doesn’t stand out. Overall it’s still strong. 7.0
Ok rock, not quite my style
Pretty good.
They are so influential. Always mentioned as one of the most influential groups. I like them. but never loved them like that.
Groundbreaking for the time, some interesting jams and thrilled that I finally made some time to get my Brian Ferry on.
I liked this. Spirited glam rock that was consistent without being repetitive. I don't think I'd listen to it again but it was pretty good! More of a 3.5.
3/10, 30%
Goeie cover. Out of the blue is een banger, fijn die Flanger aan eht einde met de gitaarsolo. Echt een vet nummer. WTF is Bitter sweet voor nummer hahaha All in all, echt een prima album niet heel bijzonder imo maar luistert wel lekker weg. FAVO: Out of the blue, Prairie rose
An a-ok album.
Meh. It was not bad, I could enjoy a few songs in isolation. Not amazing. I was not grabbed in general. It might have been very influential in its time or progressive. But I think it now just works for isolated tracks for a '70s soundtrack movie.
Pretty mid. I understand that it was influential for other influential bands, but this didn’t do a whole lot for me.
This is an album that has grown on me over the years. I really disliked it the first time I heard it, and now I really like it.
Couldn’t quite see the forest for the trees on this one, which is a common conceit of most Eno-less Roxy Music for me.
More rocky than I expected, will listen again, 3.75
Velvet voice for singing sharp lyrics.
Yet another album that had a huge write up about how great it was that left me with the personal impression of just: " *big shrug* it was fine"
Listened Before? No Album Art: 5 / 5 (boobies) Never heard of these guys. Opens on a tear with a galloping bassline on The Thrill of It All. Tonally this song is like an intersection of glam and prog. Bitter Sweet was an unexpected trip. Oscillates between pretty oboe-backed sections and distorted circus / polka + German lyrics for nightmare vibes. Casanova is another standout. Not my closest listen, but I enjoyed what I heard. A lot of it kind of fell to the background with the exceptions noted above. Solid proggy/glam rock, but nothing that I plan to come back to quickly. Middling 3 / 5 for me. Added to Library? No Songs Added to Playlist:
It's unusual to come across an "art rock" album that (mostly) remembers to keep the "rock" part in the foreground. That was a nice surprise. There's still a lot of pretentious nonsense in here, don't get me wrong. "Art Rock" is always going to find its way up its own butt. That's just the sin of the genre. But, as far as it goes, Roxy Music did an alright job keeping to the assignment of making a decent rock album.
I like Roxy Music, but I like some of their other albums better than this one. Don’t think I’m in the right spot for this, so feeling like a 3.5 and will round it down.
I am not sure what I was expecting for this album, between the title of the album and cover art, but this was not it. It was pretty good, although the vocals were a bit over artsy or theatrical at times. I did enjoy the soundscapes throughout combined with the electric guitar.
The album cover is great. Let's see about the message. Very 80's, very Bowie and Lou Reed.
I like the album art more than the album. that being said it was pretty good
First spin didn't do a whole lot for me. Enjoying it more the second time around - particularly the heavier tracks - Thrill of It All, All I Want, and Casanova. The middle songs - If It Takes All Night, Bitter Sweet, and Triptych - while being good examples of different musical styles really end up distracting me. 3/5
Seems like pretty decent Glam, would need some more time with it.
I like this, Brian Ferry is a good singer.
Music 3/5 Album art 5/5
Album cover caught me off guard, music largely didn’t though I liked the last two tracks a lot
Didn't listen much. Seemed ok.
a lot of the songs sounded very Sparks-y but not in a bad way. definitely didn’t sound like it was made in 1974
Solid offering from Roxy Music
Okay, at first I thought "it's not bad, but the man only included this because there are scantily clad women on the cover." Full stop. But after listening to the album, I enjoyed it! And it had nothing to do with the near-naked women on the cover! Got less cohesive and less good in the second half, unfortunately.
I don't think I'd remember anything about this if it weren't for the album cover.
Prima album, niet zo heel bijzonder, niet vervelend. Af en toe originele gitaarriffjes, of andere wendingen.
Like most of Roxy Music's stuff, I don't really "get it." They've always been labeled as art rock, but this album is basically a straight ahead pop rock record, and a not very interesting one at that. To be fair there is one or two tracks that are exceptions ("A Really Good Time" and maybe "Out of the Blue"), but the rest just seem fairly boring Maybe this was what Tom Petty, The Cars, etc. were using as inspiration for their sound?
The album is pretty rockin and the production sounds great. However, I don't find anything here that stands out in the way other art rock groups do. Both Sparks and Of Montreal come to mind. The songs and performances are solid so I can't call myself a detractor. It's almost a four but just not enough.
It's a decent album, although it feels kinda cheap to put some random porn on the cover to drum up controversy
Bit samey after a while.
I was expecting to hate this and even wrote "UGH ROXY MUSIC FUCKEN HELL" before I'd pressed play haha. 70s UK rock, etc etc. Buuuuuuut truth is it's ok. It isn't fantastic, but it definitely isn't outright bad. Some of the tunes rock, others are weak sauce (one even sounds like a dumb ripoff Elvis tune). Did I need to hear it before I die? Of course not. But I was definitely expecting a lot worse. Mind you, I still blame the 1001 albums list for that. My expectations are only low because the overall quality is so low. I'd probably give it a 2 overall... but, ya know, tits. 3/5.
I really didn’t know this album and listened to it 3 times today. It left no impression at all. But at least it’s a start and hopefully next time I’ll start enjoying. Texture and sound are good.
I know this is unkind and harsh to say, but they've always felt like the budget Talking Heads to me. (And I know they came first! But still... what they were trying to do, Talking Heads did a 1000x better.) I actually enjoyed this album, maybe it's because they made more of an attempt to be commercial here, but I found it to be a concisely paced and well-rounded outing for Roxy Music overall. I hate the album cover though. It feels like such a cop out, a sleazy attempt to be controversial and titillate, "oh we'll put gorgeous naked women on the cover because then we'll actually sell some records." You know, as opposed to trying to market themselves as a band. *eyeroll*
I like it, not a lot, but I like it.
Hadn’t heard their earlier work. Some songs are really good.
I enjoyed it but also found it a bit forgettable
Some decent tracks in there.
This album's fine, I've listened to better on this list but I could say that I enjoyed it more than others. I think the song I like the most is If It Takes All Night.
Roxy Music was a bit of a surprise, perhaps it was haste when seeing the album title to assume a country album but getting a rock band instead. It is not always apparent why an album makes the list, and it seems like the original compiler gets desperate at times at the thought of needing to select 1001 of these things in order to sell a book. This is not to say that "Country Life" is a bad album, but it does say that it is an album where it makes you wonder whether or not it belongs here. British rock bands have played such a role in modern music, but at some point "British rock band" becomes monolithic, and this reviewer would rather look at the best of that bunch versus all of them. Roxy Music did not really stand out in this sense, but if the listener commits to the album, it is worth the listen in spite of the aforementioned gripes.
Catchy glam-rock album. Good lyrics, great voice. Love "A Really Good Time".
Good
Had never heard of Roxy Music before, but this is pretty good. Nothing bad but not the best thing either. Generally a good album, but the cover doesn't match the music at all. Fave track(s): Out of the Blue
I really liked The Thrill of It All, the rest of the album was okay.
First half of the album was too theatrical for me. I connected better with blusier, more soulful second half. As a whole, this album did not hit home for me.
Art Rock at its best. However, after the great start the later songs become a bit mediocre.
De primeras me ha gustado "Out of the blue". Sería más bien un 2,5 pero le pondré 3.
7/10 it’s alr
I've never understood the love affair with this band. I've tried multiple times with this and other albums to see what the hype is all about. I only hear Ferry's fairly boring crooning tribble, which is sad given the talent in the band. Sure there are a few decent tracks on this but nothing to get excited about. 2.5 stars
This is the Roxy Music I was late to learn. My introduction was the Avalon album which is totally different than this. I liked this, although I’d only revisit a few of the songs and probably not the whole album. Especially Bitter-Sweet, which sounds like it should be on the Cabaret soundtrack.
I had never heard this album before. And it was fine. No need to put it on again anytime soon, and nothing offensive here, either. Just all around fine.
Better with repeated listenings
Enjoyable record but nowhere near their debut.
They sure don't make album covers like they used to.
Some tuneful Roxy but not much I'd heard before or listen to again
Started out strong, but ended with some weird shit that brought it from a 4 to a 3.
Just ok...did not wow me with voice or music.
I've given this a listen a good few times now! I really like it on the whole it has a good vibe and gives me a good feeling. I love the nice 70s sound it has and the wide variety it really does have. I do feel though that the music doesn't stand out as much as the unique and artful cover which has a fun back story and is obviously eye catching and cool. The music doesn't live up to the cover for me... I like it but it's lacking something to grab my attention and I don't know exactly what that is.
Interesting album with a lot of classic sounds and genres visited. It was impressive but not my cup of tea for a go-to must-listen. At least not the first go around.
The album cover is better than the tracks on the album. It wasn't what I expected and I thought it was OK at best
Country Life is hardly a weak effort, and my inclination to rate it on a curve is in some part because I'd be annoyed to give Roxy all 4s when Steely Dan and even Bowie have 3s (on second thought, Bowie might not in my ranking system, but I went in biased for him!). Compared to the other records, though, I think the beginning and end are objectively a little flatter. The band settles into a weird groove I really dig, and it's hardly a skip.
A whole chunk of GenX grew up with More Than This and their cover of You Are Like a Hurricane. Before Bryan Feery just wanted to croon, there was a whole different Roxy Music. This is a fun record!
Middle of the road on this one...I get that it's influential, and totally am into the sound of it but overall it isn't a revisit for me. It's weird, like it almost hits everything I am into but somehow, something is just a little off-kilter for me that didn't make it overall that memorable for me.
Same again, I listened early on in the day and thought “meh” as you would say Tom, but listened again this evening and enjoyed it more. 3*
Not sure if I like it. Pros are its quirkiness and jams, cons are the vocals and melodies (clunky).
Great listening to this. Has to have influences the Flaming Lips and Tame Impala! That being said, the genre is totally my cup of tea. Absolutely appreciate the greatness though!
This is really more like a 3.5, but I didn't have that option.
Probably the most iconic Roxy Music cover art, but as far as the music goes, it lacks the highlights many of the other albums have. It's good - Roxy Music has a certain level of quality - but it's not one of the band's best.
Not as good as Avalon
listened to before not terribly interesting to me
I didn’t really care for the, quite frankly boring production quality. That’s not to say there weren’t good songs here some were pretty good. Others however just didn’t do it for me.
3.5 stars - I prefer "Avalon" but this is still a solid album. Bryan Ferry is nuts
Surprisingly enjoyable.
Nothing objectionable. Instantly forgettable.
This was cool. Pretty subdued mostly
It's a weird cross between Rocky Horror and The wall. Kinda dig it for its uniqueness, but also prolly won't ever listen to it again.
!!!
I don’t quite click with Roxy Music. This is their second album that’s come up and both times I’ve felt it’s good not great and while I respect the ideas, the execution feels just alright.
Such a great band.
Better than their previous one that came up for me. Sounds like one of the best music producers leaving the band helped the band move in a more guitar focused direction. Still not hugely engaging or enjoyable, but better than I expected.
