Son Of A Preacher Man Breakfast In Bed The Windmills Of Your Mind

Bomba, tohle jsem si moc užil. Dusty je charakter

Fantastic album, well written and composed

Like a match made in heaven, Dusty Springfield and the masterful musicians assembled for this album weave tapestries that belie the connection between the U.K. and the U.S. when it comes to soul brilliance. It is tempting to consider what it would be like if Dusty had maintained the creative momentum of this album and made successive stabs at the endeavor but this one-and-done venture is just that and what a good time it was.

This album is a classic! Every song is a banger!

Love Dusty

I am in love

Banger. Got plenty of time for this. Did not know she was British.

NO SKIP ALBUM

Another stunning example of perfection from the pure anomalous year that was 1969. Son of a Preacher Man was my first introduction to Dusty via Pulp Fiction The Windmills of Your Mind comes is also an incredible tune

Great album.

One of the most beautiful and soulful voices of the 60s This album includes reditions of classic songs, Son Of A Preacher Man, Breakfast in Bed and The Windmills of Your Mind. A great album of the 60s

HAIKU REVIEW Voice like no other Backed by the best musicians Transcends Memphis soul

Didn’t know about Dusty before, but this album was actually great.

As good as it gets, easy five stars. Enjoyable start to finish. How can you not love that voice.

Best of Blue Eyed Soul. Absolutely fantastic. 4.5 stars

Absolutely loving it!

Outstanding

Perfection

So fun and lovely. Shocking news: dusty was born and raised in London!! 4.5/5

Discovered this album after watching pulp fiction in middle school. Loved it then and love it now. 4.4/5 but we will round up

Waking up and getting busy was hard this morning. This is just what I needed, the dynamic duo. Is there anything better than eating Betty White's Dusty Muffins while listening to Dusty in Memphis? I think not.

Just with Son of a preacher man deserves a 11/10

A very warm album

Dusty has soul for days. Love this album.

Slightly shocked to find that Dusty Springfield recorded both "You Don't Own Me" and "Son of a Preacher Man." And "The Windmills of Your Mind" is just the best version of it, even though Dusty apparently hated it.

The windmills of your mind

Beautiful

"Dusty in Memphis" is the fifth studio album by English singer Dusty Springfield. The initial sessions were recorded in Memphis with a team of musicians including The Memphis Boys' Reggie Young (guitarist) and Tommy Cogbill (bassist) and backing vocalists The Sweet Inspirations. Final vocals and the orchestral parts were finished in NYC. There were apparently insecurity and stubborness issues with Dusty and the recordngs in Memphis. Three producers were used and the songs were written by LA and NYC-based writers Brill Building Sound which included Gerry Coffin, Carole King and Randy Newman among others. The intent was to mixed pop with southern soul. Initially, the album did not sell well but other artists (Elvis Presley) followed her lead to record similarily in Memphis. The album is considered one of the best albums of all time and was put into National Recording Registry for its significance by the Library of Congress in 2020. Dramatic strings open and carry the first song "Just a Little Lovin.'" Dusty's incredible voice and the backing vocals of The Sweet Inspirations. And what can you say about "Son of a Preacher Man." A song originally written for Aretha Franklin who later did a version. The piano, the drum kick, horns and that guitar lick. Surely, one of the best songs of the 60's and Dusty's most famous song. Piano, pyschedelic guitar, horns and drums lead the Gerry Coffin and Carole King song "Don't Forget About Me." A change of pace of sorts. The second side starts with two songs less reliant on the backing vocals. "Just One Smile" is strings, drums and more R&Bish. Congas and a spanish guitar.are added to "The Windmills of Your Mind." It's gentle with a bossa nova beat. The albums ends with another Coffin/King song in "I Can't Make it Alone." Piano, strings and a slow beat. A perfect way to end with the soulful backing vocals. It's hard to think of a better representation of the blue-eyed soul genre. Outstanding vocals and backing vocals and great arrangements. It's hard to imagine that because of the Memphis experience Dusty only pick two of the songs, "Just a Little Lovin'" and "Son of a Preacher Man," that she liked for the recording. Regardless, an all-time classic.

Fabulous. A proper pop singer showing that the genre can be so much more than lightweight bubble gum pop peddled by the likes of Taylor Swift & Britneeeeee.

Vad är väl en kväll på slottet jämfört men en dag i Memphis med Dusty?

A beautiful album. The great American song writers, the great American Sound Studios house band. Everything about this oozes the sound of Memphis Soul. Dusty's sound, her voice, her phrasing is all perfect.

Wow, what a voice! I haven't really listened to any Dusty Springfield before but I'm definitely open to hearing more now. Love her delivery! Fave track - this version of "Son of a Preacher Man" is excellent - I should maybe listen to the Aretha version along side it. My top pick, however, has to be "The Windmills of You Mind". She starts off sounding aloof, maybe even drowsy, and her voice transforms over the course of the song - fascinating!

Can't beat a bit of Dusty

Another masterpiece. Can hear how Dusty has influenced the likes of Amy Winehouse and Adele nearly four decades on with the beautiful string arrangements, a flawless voice and the ability to transport you to a smoky, sultry bar in the city at midnight surrounded by individuals dressed to the nines. Son of a Preacher Man may be the most popular track off the album; not close to being the best though. Perfect from front to back.

Fantastic

Beyond musical talent and skill, the best quality that music can have is its ability to make you feel something. Whether that's smile, cry, remember a memory, or evoke any sort of emotion in your cold heart. Dusty in Memphis makes me smile. It makes me strangely nostalgic for a period in which I have zero memories. It makes me think that this is probably some of what my musically-inclined grandparents listened to in their youth. It paints a picture of a simpler time - whether or not that is true is another conversation. It also impresses with its covert variety. There are sweeter tracks like So Much Love & Son of a Preacher Man, but also songs like The Windmills of Your Mind - much bolder that it can become a Bond song. Imagine all that being contained in a single, 30-or-so minute package.

Flawless

Beautiful simplicity

Is it the singer? Or is it the songs?Shouldn't it be both when it comes to this masterpiece? Songs written by, among others, Carole King, Randy Newman and the late Burt Bacharach. But Dusty Springfield takes every goddamn one of them and makes each song her own. This is as good as it gets, folks. An album worthy of its lofty reputation and then some.

Some really delightful standards in a really delightful voice. What a great album

GO ON, GIRL!

What a record, what a voice. A major broadening and deepening from the limiting girlieness and overengineered pop of just five years before, the singing is deeply soulful and ravishingly sexy (“Just A Little Loving”, “Breakfast in Bed”). The longing and anguish in her voice are completely credible – one not only feels her pain (“I Don’t Want to Hear it Anymore,” “Don’t Forget About Me”), but gets it in a near-visceral sense. The lush production is borderline overdone; one would’ve loved to hear an unplugged version of this. But the arrangements are terrific throughout, especially on “No Easy Way Down,” “So Much Love,” and “Can’t Make It Alone.” And check out “The Windmills of Your Mind”– which she pulls off impeccably and intriguingly (the understated, suggestive arrangement helps) when so much could have gone wrong. Indeed, these songs transcend the considerable limits of the late-’60s excess to achieve timelessness.

This happens to be one of my favorite albums of all time! Bringing Dusty to the heartland of soul music was a stroke of genius and produced the best "blue-eyed" soul album ever produced.

great oldy

Amazing voice, beautiful songs.

Great album and production

Very good

She’s amazing

Loved it. Mellow, feminine voice, relaxing...

Again, it's Dusty. But this time the songs are even more consistently brilliant.

Dusty is perfect

It was so good I listened twice. The second tin through was even better.

That's gotta be a 5

First time hearing this, and fuck it’s perfect isn’t it?

Didn't need to listen to this again. The songs and the voice live in my heart already.

I was not familiar with most of these tracks, and I am so glad to have been introduced. A lovely album!

Springfield's full, soulful voice is the perfect instrument for these timeless tunes. Beautiful.

I love this album so much and every time I listen to it want to listen to it more. Dusty Springfield is perfect for Memphis. “Son of a Preacher Man” is a powerhouse hit, but there is so much else to love here. There’s a wistful quality Dusty brings to even the upbeat tracks. No one does love, loss and hope like her. I love every song.

Don’t forget about me is my favorite

Soulful wonder.

YEEEAAAHHHH!!! WOOOOOOOO!!

Great music for getting it on

Lovely. Songs I knew but didn't know her.

Like father like son. Femi adds a touch of western songcraft to his fathers Afro agit funk which probably makes this easier for newbies, but the beat and the commitment is still there. Recommended.

Beautiful, lyrics taking you on a subtly sensual path. Dusty’s voice is smooth and melodic with clear diction such that you can appreciate where each song takes you.

Love her!

I get why it’s considered a classic to this day. Dusty’s voice is exquisite, and the highlight throughout the album. She just sucks you in; it feels like Sunday morning sensuality, oozing with romantic yearning. My favorite tracks are “Just a Little Lovin’”, “So Much Love”, “Son of a Preacher Man”, “I Don’t Want to Hear It Anymore”, “Breakfast in Bed”, “Just One Smile”, “In the Land of Make Believe”, “No Easy Way Down”, and “I Can’t Make It Alone”

Perfection.

I think I just fell in love. One of the most soulful records I've ever heard.

So great. Had to listen twice.

I really enjoyed this album

I loved this album. After this I wanna keep listening to Dusty's work

Amazingly soulful sounds and fantastic instrumentation.

Sublime 6 stars

Very soulful and easy to listen to. I loved hearing The Sweet Inspirations singing background and of course “Son of a Preacher Man.”

Wow. What a versatile voice she has. A bit of cheese on here, but in the lovable sense. There are other 5 star albums on this list that I feel are better constructed than this one, but purely for replayability and enjoyable aspects this has to be a 5 star selection for me. Fave track is son of a preacher man. Duh.

10/10 based af

This album is amazing. Great from end to end with fantastic production quality.

smooth, nice voice and I like the vibes

Worth many replays! 5/5

An album with earworms!

What a pleasant surprise! I haven’t heard of her before, but now I see why she is a legend! Great album, crystal clear voice, great production. I loved it!

Such a beautiful, soulful voice.

Soulful vibes fr all the way through. Soul music just does something else to me. easy 9/10

Such a golden, glittery feeling of warm nostalgia.

What a great album.

No comment needed

Phenomenal. I loved every second of it.

Dusty Springfield has such a beautiful voice. The Windmills of Your Mind could be a Bond song.

Son of a preaching man Yowza Just a little loving This why to do the album generator

Wonderful.

just a little lovin' is pretty good. it's good! love it!

Yes, yes, yes! City's dusky voice excels throughout this excel-lent album. Every track is brilliant but Windmills of your Mind blows mine!!

Dusty is just a great singer. This album was well-produced too. Nailed it.

Smooth.

Another classic record on this list. I take a lot of these records for granted because they have been in the catalog for so long. Dusting this one off and giving it a recent spin reminded me of what a great soulful album this was.

Loved it. Class melodies and vocals

Wonderful 👏

Gran voz, buena instrumentación. A pesar de que todo gira en torno al canto, las cuerdas le dan un toque muy "espectacular". La batería disfrutable en todo el disco, pero sobre todo en Breakfast in Bed. Me gustó también la letra mareadora cantinflesca tintanesca de The Windmills of Your Mind.

Yeah this was good

Fucking awesome. Dope chill vibes

Dusty! After 2 Dusty albums on this list, I have a newfound appreciation for her. I had always known "of" her, but never intentionally listened to her. This album is better than "A Girl Called Dusty", and nearly gets to 5 stars for "Preacher Man" alone. What a great, great album.

What an amazing album!

Love, favorite yet

This is so easy listening. Every song is a banger

Yeh, great

Very good

So easy to listen to

357/1001 Dusty Springfield - Dusty In Memphis Heard before? ❓ Revisit? ✅ I suspect I probably have heard this album sporadically in its entirety, as I know my mum has it, but never really knowingly sat down to fully listen. Either way, lush vocals, lush arrangements. Yeah this was a great album to enjoy this morning.

8.1/10 Favourite Tracks: Windmills of Your Mind No Easy Way Down So Much Love

A pleasant Monday morning surprise. I didn’t know Dusty Springfield beyond “Son of a Preacher Man”, but this is some nice, soulful, and very well-written music. It has a great atmosphere.

Son of a Preacher Man is the only song I know by Dusty Springfield. But listening to the whole album, I’m surprised some other songs aren’t as equally well known. She has a unique voice, the musicality of the album is very impressive and sounds great. There’s a lot to like here. Windmills of Your Mind was a nice change of tone and energy. The album was short and sweet, overall. Also, love me a gay icon.

Dusty has a great voice, and a few of these songs are absolute classics.

Сара није слушала, јебу је структуре Марко 4

Dusty’s vocals are the sonic equivalent of a warm, smoky whisky by an open fire on a winter night.

I don't know exactly how to describe it, but Dusty In Memphis made me imagine I was a 1960's housewife daydreaming out the kitchen window while drinking a cup of coffee after the husband and kids have left for the day.

Album 240. Dusty In Memphis (https://open.spotify.com/album/5FRB5oQaHxlDNe6gMGuzu2?si=YFEzCL4kRyuzNZCGigVIjg) — Dusty Springfield (1969) Classic magnificent Dusty’s album. 4/5 Liked: — The Windmills Of Your Mind — I Can't Make It Alone — Son Of A Preacher Man

otro gran alnum de Dusty, me encanta

What a voice.Soulful. Incredible Memphis musicians. It’s one of those records that is drenched in quality and authenticity, but still appeals to a broad audience. It probably converted more than a few housewives into soul/r&b fans. 4.2

Enjoyable listen

Gorgeous voice singing great songs, what's not to like? 😊

Love Dusty and this is her best album

This album is just gorgeous. Dusty’s vocals are perfect for the tunes and Son of a Preacher Man is such a great standout track. Just lovely.

Enjoyed this, very smooth

*Dusty in Memphis* stands as a soulful masterpiece that perfectly balances Dusty Springfield’s sophisticated vocal delivery with the gritty, rhythmic backbone of Southern soul. The album is anchored by undeniable highlights like the infectious "Just a Little Lovin'" and the radiantly joyful "So Much Love," while tracks like the tense, evocative "I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore" showcase her incredible ability to inhabit a song's emotional landscape. While some tracks, such as "In the Land of Make Believe," lean into an experimental vision that may not land for every listener, the record maintains a compelling consistency, particularly when Dusty leans into the danceable grooves of "Don't Forget About Me" or the dramatic, crescendo-building finish of "The Windmills of Your Mind." It is a quintessential listening experience that captures a unique intersection of pop, soul, and R&B, earning a well-deserved 4/5 rating for its lasting influence and timeless vocal performances.

It’s crazy that a blond Englishwoman has this much soul. No offence to her rip. I didn’t recognize her or the album, but then I heard it an so many of the songs were familiar I was really taken aback that I don’t know about her. Preacher man and windmills slap so hard. It’s soulful, it’s poppy, it’s deep and emotional.

Dusty In Memphis is smooth and sensual, even to the point of sounding genuinely romantic. It's honestly a very sweet pleasant listen. Dusty Springfield is an amazing vocalist, and she absolutely sells the tone she is going for here. And there is some musical depth here that can kind of blind side you if you don't know what this is; just look at The Windmills Of Your Mind. This is a landmark for women in rock history, and I think it deserves a 4.

Its nice, she got a good voice. Not calming which i find intresting for an album like this but it does make it unique. I like it. Picasso

I did not expect much, maybe another mediocre folk musician from the 60/70's but this record blew that out of the water. Some pretty nice soul. Not much that really blew me away, but pleasant.

An album that feels like home, soft, comfortable and I wish it'd been longer.

Sweet vocals, lush arrangements. A lot to like here, with the crowning glory of ‘Son of a Preacher Man’.

I'm in love with her voice. Spectacular work. 4.75 rounded down to 4. Favorite tracks: Just a Little Lovin', Don't Wanna Hear It Anymore, The Windmills of Your Mind

Much better than the last shit the generator gave me. It of course has son of a preacher man which I've heard a countless number of times and a bunch of other stuff I am not familiar with. A very fine 60s album of one of the best female singers of the decade.

Wow, I finished this and immediately wanted to start it over. What a lovely collection of songs (written by some of the greats like Carole King and Randy Newman) sung by such a lovely voice. The first time I heard Son of a Preacher man was in my college dorm when one of the other music students told us it was a song she'd used as an audition piece. We asked her to please please sing it for us, she did, and I wish I could have bottled it up for keeps. Her voice was heavenly. Luckily so is Dusty's, and that song is just one of many gems on this album.

This version of Windmills goes craaaazy. Whole thing is so smooth. Liked it a lot more than I thought I would

!!!!!!THE ONLY ONE WHO COULD EVER REACH ME WAS THE SON OF A PREACHER MAN!!!!!!

Solid singer songer writer proto-pop album.

A treat. Dusty Springfield was really special.

Bebés siii dance dance

Soulful and heartfelt. Every note and beat of this record is near perfection. Breakfast in bed, just a little lovin and son of a preacher man are amongst the best records released in the 60s. The only slight issue with this record is it tails off badly towards the latter stages. It is such a high level to fall from though

Her voice is sensational, just an easy listen

Favorite Track: Son of a Preacher Man

Just lovely. Beautiful production.

The 60’s vibe is quite pleasing and a perfect answer to all the psychedelia that was beginning to bring me down. 4 Boolean: yes

Great voice backed with some pretty good arrangements, def a great one that only lulls every now and then. The title threw me off tho, titled like a live album. Highlights-Just a Little Lovin', Don't Forget About Me, and The Windmills of Your Mind.

Absolutely lovely! A treat to revisit this!

Dusty has such a lovely voice, it's a true pleasure to listen to her music.

Top : Son of a Preacher Man Flop : In the Land of Make Believe

Another amazing oldies album! Super chill and i love the spanish vibed guitar playin in some songs!

Emotionally charged blue eyed soul with beautiful vocals. Son of a preacher man is a classic that I’ve play over and over again. A lot of depth in this album.

Très très cool, je pourrais réécouter !

Can’t not love Dusty

A great soul album! Dusty’s vocals here are really nice. The band also does an amazing job providing instrumentals for Dusty’s vocals. The highlight of course is ‘Son of a Preacher Man’. It’s a great showcase of Springfield’s soulful voice accompanied by some excellent instrumentation.

4/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/dusty-springfield/dusty-in-memphis/ Went in expecting nothing. If anything, I had my doubts, thinking this would be a country record (pretty unfamiliar with Dusty Springfield and the name just always connects to country for me). But this is actually really good! Will definitely listen to this more to grow my appreciation.

I had never heard of Dusty Springfield before this, but I think this album was a great introduction. I really like this one!

Listened to on my Apple AirPods Max. This album really has some depth under it's hood, behind the weak album cover with a dated hairstyle and the title's impression of a 'just another love-laden pop release' from someone who would seem familiar to me as a 60s-era variety/talk show performer. In spite of my weak first thoughts just based on the cover alone, and my lack of knowledge of Dusty Springfield, this album surprised me in it's variety of sound, it's lyrical quality, and the voice of Dusty herself, which is really emotive. 'Just a Little Lovin' makes a great first impression with this jazzy kinda progression combined with sultry delivery, and at track three I arrived upon 'Son of a Preacher Man', in a surprise way similar to listening to Harry Nilsson's 'Coconut' for the first time, in the sense that I've heard it plenty of times but had no idea that this artist made that song. Could it be because of an undercurrent of appropriation felt in the tracks? Maybe. But they are still undeniable as interesting and enjoyable songs, particularly for me Preacher Man for it's funky feel and catchy chorus. 'Breakfast in Bed' was a bit of a surprise as well, a love song that unapolegetically indulges in adultery, with these kind of taboo lyrics delivered assuredly, which I though was quite interesting. The "you should leave her for me" theme of song is not necessarily uncommon, especially nowadays, but it rarely gets so blatantly sung as this, the "yeah she broke your heart again and you came to me, and all I want is for you to stay in bed for breakfast the morning after" just comes off particularly strong, maybe also due in fact to the time period in which this released. Another highlight off this album is 'The Windmills of Your Mind' which is written in almost pure simile and backdropped with this minimalist guitar and percussion that makes it feel like a lullaby, before building and eventually exploding into this fast paced drumming with bass and piano flourishes and a strong orchestration. It's just a great sonic journey and is so well composed. Now, what certainly helps create this album's collection of sounds and vibes is that a lot of it is not original material, which degrades the album a bit for me. Beyond just the lyrics which I believe Dusty didn't have a hand in, there is a good amount of covers on here too. But Dusty's voice is great, and the performances from the instrument sections is strong all around, so it's hard to hate that fact too much. They at least feed into each other very well for what can be pretty disparate in terms of actual sound, mostly because of their love-focused lyrics. And I want to make a point of that quickly, because the lyrics of love are really forlorn and yearning compared to many others, so there is this sad atmosphere to the whole thing that Dusty's voice really helps thoughtfully convey. I also thought that--although the album has a great range of sounds while staying cohesive--the choruses left me a bit unimpressed on the whole, with most forcing themselves into a louder and bombastic tone that a lot of the songs don't carry with throughout, which can make them feel a bit disjointed. Overall, this is a great collection of songs that is soulfully sung by Dusty Springfield and excitingly performed through all the instruments. There are plenty of little flourishes throughout that perk up my ears, and I found myself really engaged with the lyricism.

Necesito volver a escucharlo pero me gustó

Were her feet ten feet off of Beale?

Meio bunda, mas é legal.

Žavinga, tikrai, galima klausytis.

Dusty has a beautiful voice, and ‘Son of a Preacherman’ is fantastic, but the rest of the album all kind of blends together. Still a beautiful record though.

It's refreshing to hear something other than the Dusty tracks everyone knows. Great randlge as a singer and the backing and/musicians are phenomenal.

You might not remember when I said Dusty was a greatest hits artist. I still don't disagree with that, but this album goes a long way to remedy that. What a VOICE. Even though she hated it, apparently.

Warm and cozy, probably the highlight of blue-eyed soul in Britain, at least until Amy Winehouse came along

Before this, my entire knowledge of Dusty Springfield was "Son of A Preacher Man" and that one Pet Shop Boys song. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this. I wasn't expecting it to be as soulful and as uptempo as a lot of it was. I will admit that the slower songs really did nothing for me, but that's just my own problem to deal with.

Dusty What a change of pace but what a treat this felt like. Every note perfectly place, every string, every lyric landed so smoothly. The whole album felt like a different moment. Like that coffee in the garden before the world wakes up, like watching the sunset over the sea, like holding a drink in your hand and listening to the ice crack as it slowly melts. This was to be enjoyed as a single musical moment. For an album seemingly born from frustration, and one that was doomed to commercial failure it comes across as a unmitigated triumph. Only blemishes were some misplaced sitar on In the Land of Make Believe and I still don't know if The Windmills of Your Mind sits comfortably in this set. And the closer is a bit of a weaker song after the heights of the rest. But I'm nit picking if I'm honest. Best Track - Could be almost any but Breakfast In Bed is the one the got the repeated plays. Worst Track - Land of Make Believe for those sitar embellishments. 8.5/10

Wow everything so far is really pretty; the lyrics, instrumentals, voice, etc. I also love the album having a late 60's vibe. I also like the beat of the album this is deficiently a happy day album. But something is still off giving it a 4/5

A collection of very proficient soul tracks. Lacks the punch that more straight to the point souls has for me, but it's an enjoyable record through and through. Much better than her earlier records.

What a voice, so smooth delicate and warming. So many great songs here, I’m ashamed to say I’d only really listened to Son Of A Preacher man before, so really enjoyed getting through a full Dusty album. Loved it Best Song: Breakfast In Bed 4.0/5.0

What a voice, what a a woman. Really simple and beautiful music, haven't had much sound like this for a long time, its a sound i long for every now and then.

Este sí po

What a great voice, poignant yet smooth like butter. Son of a Preacher Man is a classic and I’m very glad I got more familiar with Dusty’s work.

Much better than her other album on the list, starts off with 3 absolute bangers. A few just alright songs keep this from a 5 for me. I find it crazy it failed commercially though, I just don't understand why. There's great tunes here and Dusty can really turn it up vocally when the song needs it

I quite like this. Dusty has such a lovely voice and she is able to create such vivid imagery through this. The blues influence is so nice, the album has a very timeless feel to it and really resonates today still. 'Son of a preacherman' is the stand out by far, but the whole album flows well and it doesn't really have many lows. The opening to this album sets the tone so well and really gets you excited for the album. Great stuff, really influential even up to today. Fav Track: Son of a Preacherman

Deffo four stars, never really listened to much by dusty but was pleasantly surprised.

It’s nice, I really like her sound and her voice. 3.7!

Dusty is a long-ago love that I still can't hear enough of. I guess Goffin/King should get some cred here too, and the Southern soul that inspired her. No Easy Way Down haunts me to this day.

Love Dusty - son of a preacher man is a timeless classic.

5 * ! Never heard of this artist before. Great voice! Accompanying music is nice. Definitely will listen to again

Very glossy and beautiful.

No es mi gusto

The magnum opus of 'blue eyed soul', with terrific song choices and fantastic performances.

mange klassikere

Intressante Stimme und Musik, Kraftvoll und schön

What a delight! After kind of hating the other Dusty album on this list (which boils down to her doing adequate karaoke to songs with identical backing tracks as the originals), this one completely took me by surprise; it's so, so much better. There's a great variety of songs by some of the greatest names in all of 60's songwriting (King, Newman, Bacharach etc.), delivered with lush, almost sizzling hot arrangements, while Dusty's warm and hazy voice gets to shine at its very best. Makes me feel like a bun in the oven.

This is an album that pretty much perfectly encapsulates the changing times of the western world- Fully recovered from WWII, exiting the peak of the civil rights movement, and men on the moon, entering into a decade of promise with glitz and glamor. Picture a big-ass boxy 60s car cruising down the Vegas strip or sunset boulevard, without a care in the world

Surprisingly good. And not much into ballads, but I listened to this in one sitting. Very soulful and interesting. Dusty's voice is alluring and powerful.

Some classic songs! Can’t help but think of the scene in Pulp Fiction when I hear “Son of Preacher Man”!

Sweet, soulful voice

Great discovery, the record has very comforting and soulful vibes. Favorite tracks : Son of a preacher man, Just a little lovin'

I knew Son of A Preacher Man and Breakfast in Bed I probably had heard somewhere. I was surprised that most of the tracks had the same level of quality and it was solid all the way through. Definitely worth hearing.

Canta tan limpiecito que da sueño, en el buen sentido jajaja. A pesar de estar corto no se sienten mini las canciones

pue que no haya canción que suene más cool que son of a preacher man. gender goals como suena esa rola

Better than expected - I'll listen again

Full Album Thoughts: Album Rating: 3.9 (A) I somehow ended up with both Dusty albums on the 1001 song list within the first 2 weeks. Woof. Expect the words Smooth and Grove throughout the individual track notes. I cant quite put my finger on what the qualitative improvement is, but I can really feel it compared to the earlier album. The experimentation with structure and accompaniment and overall "vibe" lands a lot more coherently here. Like, I can put this album on and there are No Skips... which uh... actually gives it an edge in my tastes for overall album ratings! Track Thoughts: "Just a Little Lovin'" B+ I mean yeah we are in for a bunch of Love Songs yet again. But they're jazzier. This is a waltz. It still feels a bit like Film Score music. This sets the tone for the album, I like it a lot more then other songs from the previous album, but I dont actually love it as an opener. "So Much Love" A This song's structure is more dynamic and I really like the back up vocals to fill out the production. The drums are a bit more jazzy though, which I think helps drive the song. "Son of a Preacher Man" S Oh hey this one escaped containment! Yeah you cant really go wrong with this grove. Will we ever extricate this from Pulp Fiction? Dusty is singing more subdued here, and yet its still a very powerful vocal performance. I think these songs feel less like "Orchestral Pop" and more like there is a rock band accompanied by horns... which you know, is excellent! "I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore" A+ Oh there is the orchestral strings again. I actually really like this voyeuristic point of view for the song. This feels classy, but also a little too close to "Film Score Music" again. There is something eerily familiar about the plucked sting after the "walls are much too thin", that I just cant place. "Don't Forget About Me" B Actually, you know what, the breathy and distant placement of the lead vocals here... they take me out of it. The overdrive guitar, with its little runs and trills, I kind of wish it just went full rock-solo instead of restrained yet too ostentatious snippets. The actual kick in of the chorus is boisterous enough, but I kind of didnt want to wait for half the song to get up there. "Breakfast in Bed" B- Again, not really enjoying the subdued vocals. Bedroom voice. Not really doing it for me. Its got a smooth trumpet solo, its got those badump-badump drum grove that I really like, but idk this is just a total tonal miss for me. "Just One Smile" B- Sorry I zoned out here. Its a nothing song. Again. I was really enjoying the more Rock and ocasionally jazzy songs, but we are back to orchestral. "The Windmills of Your Mind" A Fuck this song keeps coming up for me here. I dont know what compelled me to watch The Thomas Crown Affair for the first time recently, but then its also used in the Severance ending (spoilers) and here we are again. I actually am deeply in love with the structure of this song, but I am partial to its initial delivery by Noel Harrison... this is such a fascinating take making it a more Spanish guitar inspired interpretation! Heck actually as this builds... this stands on its own as a Unique Version. But I am like, actively obsessed with this song these days (within the last year) so idk if its getting a glow up because of that. "In the Land of Make Believe" B- I keep saying these songs are... well not overproduced, but there is alot of instrumentation that leads to that Film Score sound, so here we have a more stripped back song, with some strange choices of instrumentation (I do love a good sitar and some bongos), and yet... I kind of dont really think it suits Dusty. I think she is singing too high for her register. "No Easy Way Down" A Oh yeah lets get right back in the groove with that organ, the drum waltz, the strings... this is classy. This is exactly what I want. This is smooth jazz-esque that I appreciate. "I Can't Make It Alone" B- Too laid back for an ending song. A nothing ballad. Dont hate it, dont need to hear it again. The trick of "I cant make it alone" with doubling the vocals is a neat little wink I guess.

This was a good album. Easy to listen to. A bit repetitive and the songs all blended together, but I had no problems with it.

This isnt a voice you can fall out with. Some classic standards and orchestration. The best compliment i can give it is that three generations all commented on how nice it was when i played it.

Beautiful album.

The older I get the more I like this album. She has an outstanding voice. It has a raw feeling of the early 70s. 8.25/10 Top song Son of a preacher man (duh)

Bra! Son of a preacher man är ju en klassiker och väldigt bra fortfarande. Gillade nästan alla låtar. Dustys röst är perfektion! Tröttnar aldrig.

Preacher son!

This is an album for people who love a Singer with a capital S: Someone who knows how to use their instrument and interpret a lyric and phrase a melody and belt and holler and also be lilting and tender and seductive and fun. She really was one of them ones.

Great stuff, one of the most perfect singing voices of all time, plus a haunting version of Windmills Of Your Mind. A wonderful listen.

classic ive never heard before

This was a treat.

Just A Little Lovin' Early In The Morning' 1001 Albums Generator 258 (3/30/2026) This is a really incredible soul singer making a pretty good album. Dusty herself is far and away the best part of this album, and she warrants no lower than a 3/5, even if the band was just farting into mics and she was singing over it. And luckily, The "Memphis Boys" (as the backing band was called) were pretty good at their instruments. And the highlights, especially the eternal Son Of A Preacher Man, are enough to drag up the forgettable bits of orchestral pop up even further. With that said, No Easy Way Down sounds like an extremely cheesy 80's/90's adult contemporary song, so I guess it's ahead of its time in a weird way, but it's one of the worst songs here. In The Land Of Make Believe and Just One Smile are also pretty weaksauce. But this is a good bit of soul. 4/5. Favs: Just A Little Lovin' Son Of A Preacher Man The Windmills Of Your Mind Least Fav: No Easy Way Down

OK, OK, so you gotta hear this. So, Jan's shower is going on right now, and she's singing "Son of a Preacher Man" and everyone's just staring at her. The song is about losing your virginity next to a church, and guess what - she's been singing for the last twenty minutes!

i was surprised by how much i enjoyed this actually well done dusty

I liked this! Not much to NOT like about this, but I loved the overall sound of this and the 60s pop vibes. Favorites: Son of a Preacher Man, I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore, In the Land of Make Believe

Never spent much time with Dusty outside of the big hits. What a talent! Love the voice, great arrangements. I'm sure the moms go crazy over this one.

No. 149 What a sweet and lovely pop album.

I don't know what it is, and there are some fabulous songs in this album like The Windmills of Your Mind, but I haven't liked it that much. There's something in Dusty that doesn't convince me that much, and that makes me feel her music a bit bland, insipid, at times repetitive once the songs have been playing for some time. And she has a very warm voice, that's great, I love how she sings, that's not the problem... But the songs don't go much deeper, are not that interesting. At least, not as much as they could. Because here are good ideas, but they all end up feeling bland for one or another reason. I've liked it, to be honest. But I hoped to find this album much more of my taste. And, honestly, I haven't found it.

A fun soul record. As classic as it gets and some good versions of classic songs. I swear I was imagining this to be some American country rocker lol

Okay Album. Could listen to it while doing some work.

sjajno

I enjoy this smooooth listening

pretty peak

Really enjoyed this one, added a few songs to my soul playlist from here. Picking a favourite song was difficult but I’ve landed on ‘The Windmills of Your Mind’ - didn’t add it to my soul playlist but I just love how it builds and the almost haunting start so wanted to give it its place on my 1001 songs from 1001 albums you must listen to before you die

Late 60s early 70s continues to be the best period for song writing and it’s not even close.

Like a door that keeps revolving in a half forgotten dream Or the ripples from a pebble someone tosses in a stream Like a clock whose hands are sweeping past the minutes of its face And the world is like an apple whirling silently in space Like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind

Actually a pretty pleasant listen. I went into this thinking this would be country or old folk that just wouldn't gel with me but it was a nice pop-soul blend that while it's not my style, I can appreciate.

Excellent!

A great singer, liked this more than I expected.

Lovely voice and musically very sweet.

Good soul music

What an amazingly intimate yet powerful voice. I loved the chord progression in ‘I Don’t Want To Hear This Anymore’

Really good. Incredible sound for a live record. What a voice.

Echt weer slay

I didn't expect to like this album as much as I did! Great vibes all around.

ja hele extra ster voor son of a preacher man, heerlijk !!

I wasn't familiar with Dusty Springfield's work outside of a few select well known singles, but this album is proof enough that she's got real talent and her deeper cuts are well worth checking out.

I liked this – wonderful tracks, brilliant production and what a voice. But yet again, despite the high score it is not something I would buy.

Tarantino can't be wrong.

Great album, I never would have guessed that "Dusty Springfield" is the name of a British woman lmao. She could sing though holy shit

Positively gorgeous soulful music. I love the story behind the recording as well. Favorite track: Son of a Preacher Man

Bra platta från när duktiga artister sjöng in låtar från duktiga låtskrivare. I Don't Want to Hear it Anymore och The Windmills of Your Mind var bäst.

Nearly a 5, but still great

It is a crime that they link to the 'remastered' version. But otherwise it's dusty Springfield and co at full power. If that's your ham this is pretty fantastic. For me you can occasionally hear the English soul diva stumble on the material

What a great voice. Enjoyed this album a lot.

Wait, you're telling me Som Of A Preacher Man isn't the best song on this highly regarded album?

Started as a 2 (I was kind of tired, wasn’t really feeling the dated sound)… until The Windmills of your Mind blew me away, and brought the whole thing up to a 4… there’s also a few fun do-whops and the all-timer everyone knows.

Романтичный, нежный, сладкий на вкус и немного приторный альбом.

Solid old-timey pop album, I love her voice so much. Beautiful and full of soul. Standout Songs: Just A Little Lovin’ Son Of A Preacher Man Breakfast In Bed Just One Smile I Can’t Make It Alone

A great artist. Nice soulful voice. Great album.

Overall Rating - 4.00/5 (8.00/10). Very good album. I've always liked Dusty Springfield's voice, so this was an easy and pleasant listen for me. Son of a Preacher Man is absolutely perfect for her voice and style. Well produced, well orchestrated, and everything fits together.

Not my favourite Dusty album. I much prefer Houmous & Chutneys ‘Dusty In The Loft’ 4.3 6/12 Breakfast In Bed

Dusty's voice is gentle and sweet, though I guess I expected some of Aretha's passion. Maybe the soul here is not all-encompassing, it's finding beauty in the small moments.

Holy moly, this album is so much better than the first Dusty Springfield album I had to listen to. I actually enjoyed this. Stand-outs - Just A Little Lovin' - Son Of A Preacher Man - The Windmills Of Your Mind

Such a sweet summertime album. So much soul and skill. I liked it. Son of a preacher man is one of my favorite songs of all time

Loved it. Love her voice. The 60s vibe. Easy listening.

This is blue eyed soul. Good, blue eyed soul.

SON OF A PREACHER MAN

Really great!! Love her vocals and her soulful style.

Classic Americana. For Dusty to put something out like this and to be so well-regarded is a feat for a woman at the time, even one as clearly talented as she is. I enjoyed the album as a whole, and I LOVE the song Son of a Preacher Man.

A great album that reflects the 1960s very well with the emphasis on better production, orchestration, arrangements with Dusty and her golden voice at the forefront. I wouldn't say it is something that you need to listen to from a musical perspective, but see it more as a historical document.

This album is such a nice vibe. I didn't think I would like it very much and it took me a few songs in before I really bought in. This is not music to challenge you, it is music to turn on low in the background while you cook dinner, or sip iced tea on a Summer afternoon. Very chill.

Excellent. Really enjoyed it.

Adorei a vibe

Delightful. What a voice!

so beautiful and serene. thank you ms. dusty

Makes me feel like a woman (I’m a man)

I am feeling nice today because I had a fresh slice of cookie cake :)

The voice. The strings. The pleading. Raspy and dreamy, I love Dusty.

Solid grooves front to back, why haven't I listened to this sooner

really loved

I didnt know I knew so many Dusty songs!

Exceptional Voice, exceptional lady.

Really liked her voice and vibe

Something quite mysterious and melancholic about Dusty’s voice. Thoroughly enjoyed.

You cant hate dusty. Voice like delightful soup

Timeless. Iconic original voice, creates a classy ambience whenever you need... that sort of thing. Enjoyable.

Love her voice Was a very enjoyable album

This is a really good album. A few songs were really great. A couple weren't amazing, but none were bad. This genre has been hit or miss for me, but this one is good.

Amazing short songs love Michelle Good vibe

why is everyone in memphis? get out of there Highlights: Song of a Preacher Man, Windmills of Your Mind

Saved? ✅ Would listen again? ✅ Would recommend to anyone? ✅ Would buy on Vinyl? ✅

Never listened to Dusty Springfield (not related to Buffalo Springfield), and this is a decent sized gap in my big brain stored for music listening and trivia. I'm kind of biased toward the American R&B over the British kind because well, we invented it. Same with the Blues, but that doesn't mean the British don't do it badly, unlike most of their national cuisine. Dusty is a great great singer, and I don't know what else to add. Smooth and quick album from a classic mid 20th century singer. Lots of crazy shit was happening and going on in 1969, but here's this British woman who can actually sing.

she might not want to hear it anymore but i surely do. idk why son of a preacher man was so popular with the amount of songs on here that outshine it by miles. saved (5/10) - I dont want to hear it anymore - Just one smile - The windmills of your mind - In the land of make believe - No easy way down

Blast from the past. Soothing music and lovely voice

Erg leuk

so dreamy!

we love Dusty Springfield in this house

What an amazing opening 3 tracks: Just a Little Lovin', extolling the virtues of morning sex, So Much Love and Son of a Preacher Man. Breakfast in Bed and Windmills of Your Mind great songs too. Dusty's voice is sublime and super sexy. Never knew she was from London, assumed it was deep Southern soul!

Beautiful voice. Great lyrics. Captivating storytelling. Big big fan! Especially loved The Windmills of Your Mind.

This album feels like a warm comforting hug. This album feels like a nice hot chocolate in winter. This album feels like the spring flowers blooming. This album feels like a lovely summer picnic with loved ones. This album feels like the most comforting comfortable-ness that ever comfortable-d 4.5 / 5
