Seriously one of the best albums I’ve ever heard
This was really good, short, sweet, and full of emotion and range. Every song was solid and this is certainly timeless. Great intro to dusty for me.
Sure
muy lindo, suena mucho a disco muy sampleable
Cool
son of a preacher man 1969 united kingdom pop, rhythm and blues
Son Of A Preacher Man earns this a 4. The rest are ok.
Pretty good, some stand outs there.
Surprisingly good. Who would have thought it
Gostoso de ouvir. Add ao meu acervo.
really liked this album! dusty’s voice is very nice to listen to and the songs are very pretty too. there are some I didn’t like as much but mostly these are songs I would listen to again. -favourite tracks: THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND and I DON’T WANT TO HEAR IT ANYMORE - MONO VERSION
What a way to kick things off
This is a classic and we all know it and love it. It feels very classic 60s, romantic and melancholy but reminds me most of journeys in the car with my parents. Big hauntology vibes on this on this one for me, casts a feeling of the 60s that I’ll never know.
Just a really solid soul album, such a wonderful voice that’s brimming with charisma. Feels pretty timeless
Lovely voice. Good story telling songs.
Dusty…what a voice. Beautiful. Seriously soulful, sadly perhaps there’s a melancholy undercurrent to all her songs which makes it more intense and emotional.
And here's me thinking Dusty in Springfield But Actually She's in Memphis
Stellar voice, songwriting, and musical arrangements. A good variety in tempo and not too long.
GOING IN: Very excited indeed LISTENED WHILE: morning coffee FAMILIARITY: Listened to it many times SKIP RATE: Played it straight through REPLAY VALUE: Deffo play again DISCOVERY CURVE: Warmed up nicely ALBUM ARC: Pretty even, consistent VERDICT: Absolutely brilliant BODY'S VERDICT: Sitting nicely - Motionless appreciation FAVOURITE TRACK: So Much Love My Rating: 4
the queen of blue-eyed soul. her voice is a dream. a classic. highlights: “son of a preacher man” “breakfast in bed” “the windmills of your mind”
💖

Pretty good record she has great vocals
So talented and misunderstood
Just lovely.
Tastefull, skillfull, and most of all soulfull
Really wonderful. I was only familiar with Son of a Preacher Man before but the whole album is full of beautiful tracks like it. Other favorites are Just A Little Lovin', Breakfast in Bed, The Windmills of Your Mind.
Made my day a lot better, wonderful music with great production. Nothing felt forced, just the music flowing as it should. Dusty > Dust
Good album with awesome feeling. This is perfect for moments where you just need to sit down and relax. Best song was Son of a Preacher Man.
I honestly wasn’t expecting to like this one at all, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was really quite an enjoyable listen and Son of a Preacher Man is such a classic!
Really enjoyed this one. First ‘new to me’ album from the list that I went back and listened to several times.
my queen
Classic album. Amazing vocals and underrated instrumentation especially the bass guitar.
Best Song: Son of a Preacher Man Maybe it is my ignorance but I would think, in hindsight, Dusty Springfield should have been a more powerful musical influence in pop culture from the 60s. I get the Tarantino, "Pulp Fiction" inclusion and all that, but her talent is up there with some of the greats. Part of me wonders, if she had died at 27 like many of her fellow musicians of the era if she would be more well known. Anyway, this is another good album from Dusty. It is necessarily my type of music but her talent outweighs genre. Recommend. 4/5.
very chill instrumentals and vocals. son of a preacher man.
Just A Little Lovin’ // Son Of A Preacher Man //
I'm not much for blue eyed soul generally but this is the greatest BES record by far imo. Son of a Preacherman is one of the absolute best singles of the 60s. The rest holds up pretty well. Dusty’s voice is gorgeous and soothing, like a warm fuzzy blanket. The arrangements are largely schmaltz free. It's a gem if you dig the torch singer thing, and I do
Easy to listen to, and some good classics .
Dusty has such a nice clear voice, really enjoyed this Fav songs: Son of a Preacher Man, Breakfast in Bed, The Windmills of Your Mind
a little long for the style for my own personal tastes, but it is great and her voice is just incredible
This was a nice little surprise to start the week. I honestly have not knowingly chosen to listen to Dusty Springfield outside of hearing Son of a Preacher Man. < as an aside, I found myself rapping along with the lyrics of Hits From the Bong by Cypress Hill, since it samples this song, which was kinda fun actually > It's such a classic song, and beautifully sung by Dusty. The rest of the album follows suit. Her voice has this laid back/sexy feel to it, but she hits every note easily. Biggest Hit - Son of a Preacher Man (duh) Biggest Miss (if I had to choose one) - In the Land of Make Believe Biggest Surprise - No Easy Way Down
Solid 4/5. No notes.
SO PEAK SO GOOD I LOVE IT
Good
So cool. Hard to put a genre on this one, could hear a singer on a cruise ship hitting a bunch of the early stuff. Son of a preacher man is of course a banger. Some cool stuff on the second half of the album. Windmills of Your Mind a sneaky good song
pretty good but got a little long near the end.
It's a little dated but Dusty is an amazing vocalist. She really elevates these songs. Favorites: So Much Love, Son of a Preacher Man, No Easy Way Down Would I listen to it again: Yes
What a voice, and what an album. The son of a preacher man is a particular highlight.
Honestly, I didn't mind it. Her voice was really great points off for not writing music herself, but other than that, not bad, listenable.
7.5/10 Favourite: In the Windmills of Your Mind Least Favourite: Breakfast in Bed
Son of a Preacher Man! Always thought it was Aretha Franklin's song. Great combination of soulful and wistful.
Kedvenc/Favourite: Son Of A Preacher Man Pici korom óta imádom a Son Of A Preacher Mant, a többi szám is tetszett bár nem múlták felül. Jó album, könnyen hallgatható és fülbemászó, még vissza fogok térni hozzá. I've loved Son Of A Preacher Man since I was little, and I liked the other songs too, although they couldn't top it. It's a good album, easy to listen to and catchy, I'll definitely come back to it.
Great voice, great sound, great songs.
Not really usual style but I enjoyed her voice and the old school grooves were nice.
"Great album. Will buy." original review when this was my 8th album. Since then, I've created a group with a friend and listened to 157 other albums (Wow!) Anyway, Dusty In Memphis still is still a stand out all these albums later. When this repeat came up I was pleasantly surprised and found myself humming "Just A Little Loving" all day long.
дуже заколисуюча і розслабляюча музика, кайф . шикарна околоблюзова гітара і чарівний голос
Dusty Springfield really has a nice and soft voice, but at the same time it has character. The orchestral arrangements are also very fitting. It makes listening to this album a really joyful experience. Favourite songs: Son of a Preacher Man (doh!), The Windmills of Your Mind and Just One Smile.
Enjoyable album
once again dustys voice is great and the songs are fantastic but other than son of a preacher man i dont see myself putting on any of these songs
good
finally some good fucking food! lol, i did really enjoy it though, even though i wouldn't say it's one of my all-time faves... very solid album!
An incredible album by Dusty, the musicians, producer and songwriters. So many definitive versions on here and her voice is just sensational.
I like it. 60s Pop country? Smooth all the way through, great voice, interesting choice of songs. Heard before? Some Owned: No: 39/150 (26%) Will I get? Maybe
Lovable.
LOVE!! obsessed with her voice, will be listening for a while
Worthy of the Hype.
Classic blue-eyed soul. Rich orchestration. Some fantastic tracks.
solid
Classy album from a classy lady.
3.5 Somewhat surprisingly, I quite enjoyed that. It's exactly the kind of genre I've admonished on here many times before but perhaps it caught me in a good moment. The vocals are really good, the album doesn't overstay it's welcome, it doesn't seem overly formulaic, and son of a preacher man is a certified banger.
Great Sunday Morning/ Brunch vibes and stellar vocals.
Conheci a primeira intérprete de vários clássicos.
Dusty has an incredible voice. Really enjoyed this one!
sunny winter morning, I was surprised by the sound of this album because I was expecting it to be folky off of my visual impression. Words that come to mind are smooth, warm, a little cozy even??? I enjoyed myself! Favorite songs are just a little lovin and the windmills of your mind (what a fantastic song name I am obsessed)
Lovely stuff! Great songs wonderfully sung.
Really soulful and sultry, and Son of a Preacher Man is such a great song too. When I was listening I was like hey this is like the perfect person to do Bond film. Lo and behold she did! Never heard of her before this but is a nice addition to my mental encyclopedia
Really great. Love love love windmills of your mind, son of a preacher man, and no easy way down
Just under 9 months ago, I started a quest with the objective of listening to more albums. Just under 400 albums later, I'm glad to say I've made a move on that objective. At the very start though, this was the album that started it all since it was the first album written about for the 33 1/3 book series that I've been following in tandem with the 1001 albums project. Months later, I listen to this album with different ears, and I can now appreciate it more. Lots of beauty in both Dusty's voice and the instrumentation that accompanies her. It also blows my mind that I listened to her cover of The Windmills of Your Mind not too long before watching the end of Severance season 2. Special album to me.
I put off rating this for a long time because I couldn’t shake a vague sense of unease about the album. There’s something off about it, but for the life of me I cannot articulate what that something is. Insincerity maybe? The British take on American music? Do I believe Dusty lived these experiences? Does it even matter? Probably not. After a couple of weeks of listening, I decided to ignore my vague feelings, slap four (4) stars on it, and move on.
Smoky, sultry Dusty. She is not fully to my taste but she is one of the singular voices of the mid 20th century and this is a great recording. For some reason my saved notes are no longer saved, but I imagine I commented on the strength of charisma and quality of composition. Not all songs are compelling, but most are decent. An album that’s definitely worthy of inclusion.
Excellent album that has a fair few well known songs. In some ways easy to review as its a showcase of an amazing voice and a composition that allows it to form a timeless appeal. Some songs are a little slow for my taste but I think it just does enough to save the 4 as I cant really fault any specific song. While working I listened to it twice as it was just easy going.
I expected the great voice and a single killer song (you know the one). What I didn't expect was quite how much I would like the rest of the album. The music is excellent. It's like a time capsule that had me wafting along in imagined nostalgia. It's so smooth and stylish with a certain timeless cool and her voice is both technically incredible and easy to listen to. This is outside my usual taste but something in this really clicked with me and I expect repeat listens.
"Dusty In Memphis" highlights Dusty Springfield's famously expressive and soulful voice. Backed by the era's premier song writing talent, including Goffin & King, Bacharach & David, Mann & Weil, and Randy Newman, the tracks are elevated by lush string and horn arrangements, achieving a rich, elegant fusion of R&B and pop. The album maintains a strong sense of cohesion, with the material flowing together well. The only minor interruption is "The Windmills of Your Mind," which, despite its quality, momentarily breaks the album's established mood, and is a little out of place. "Dusty In Memphis" is a fine listen. Four stars. Side One 1 "Just a Little Lovin'" (4/5) 2 "So Much Love" (4/5) 3 "Son of a Preacher Man" (5/5) 4 "I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore" (5/5) 5 "Don't Forget About Me" (4/5) 6 "Breakfast in Bed" (5/5) Side Two 7 "Just One Smile" (4/5) 8 "The Windmills of Your Mind" (4/5) 9 "In the Land of Make Believe" (4/5) 10 "No Easy Way Down" (5/5) 11 "I Can't Make It Alone" (4/5) Total - 48 Average - 4.36 171/1001 92/171 albums reviewed were new to me.
Beautiful singing and a timeless sound for 60s music
The strings starting....woahhhh
Yes, she has a great voice and Son Of A Preacher Man is a deserved classic but I don't care for her version of Windmills Of Your Mind and the rest is a bit anonymous.
Eventuelt ta en "Breakfast in Bed".
Dusty's voice is far from dusty! It is smooth and seductive. These songs hold up to time.
A few all time classics packaged in a blue-eyed soul masterpiece
Classic. Holds up.
So much love, No easy way down, I can’t make it alone och Son of a preacher man, förstås, är briljanta.
I stort sett samma gubbar i kompbandet på From Elvis in Memphis. Stark fyra.
Lots of great songs.
Överlag ett himla härligt sound och fantastisk röst. Flera riktiga bangers!
Många klassiker hör jag!
Vilket mys!
Great voice, some solid pop songs. Just A Little Lovin' sounds like something you'd hear in a lounge. Son Of A Preacher Man was a lot of fun. Don't Forget About Me and Breakfast In Bed keep that energy going. Just One Smile was really nice. The Windmills Of Your Mind was the real breakout. Starts as a sweet slow jam, and gets slightly more upbeat as it goes on. A treat to hear. The rest of the album ends it out chill and smooth. Really enjoyed this album. Best song: Windmills Of Your Mind
Great Voice. Giving me great weekend morning vibes.
Really great sounding album with a lot of songs I knew but never knew who performed them!
Voice has the most incredible tone. The songs are smooth, sultry, seductive and the music itself is great with the string sections being particularly sweet. A fair few numbers you will already recognise but I thought every track offered something. Enjoyable listen. Favourite track - Just a Little Lovin. 8/10
I like this! Love her voice
8/10 The first thing to mention about this album is the recording and production. It’s simply magnificent. If you’ve listened to this album on crappy headphones or speakers and in any way enjoyed it, you owe it to yourself to hear this on a proper system. The dynamics in particular are just glorious. It goes from quiet, almost whispered and sparse production up to these thick, full sounding passages. The strings are beautifully recorded as they ease and swell their way under the rest of the instrumentation. And there’s so much nuance to it. There are little bits of instrumentation that sit deep in the background, but add a quality to the music that isn’t particularly apparent on the surface. Dusty’s voice is really controlled in both feel and dynamic, going from the almost whispered, close-recorded start of Windmills Of Your Mind, through the smoky soul of Son Of A Preacher Man, to the full bodied peak of Don’t Forget About Me. The album as a whole does lean a little too far towards the more poppy side of things here and if there had been an edge more of the smoky soul to some of the song choices, I would be pushing this hard towards a higher rating. The song choice is largely good though, and the album pretty much flies by. This is one of those albums that you could stick on in the background and it would be a perfect bed to a great many things, but it’s also super rewarding when you dedicate some focused listening time to it. I suspect I’ll be back to this again fairly soon, and there’s a good chance it could retrospectively get pushed further up my rankings, as I feel, as good as it already is, it might be a bit of a grower over time too. Just A Little Lovin’ - I love this smooth soul sound of the 60s and 70s. The strings in particular are delightful and evocative. Her voice has just the right edge of smoke to it and there’s a laid back lilt to the delivery, which sits nicely against the more drive on the drums. It’s a shame it fades out so soon really. Great opener. So Much Love - When she goes up to those high notes, she really hits it, and along with the backing vocals, it’s buttery smooth. It perhaps leans a little more towards the poppy side of things, but it's still a brilliant production. Again, some great work from the drummer to inject a bit of extra verve, but it’s never overplayed either. Son Of A Preacher Man - An absolute classic. Again, that edge of smoke on the vocal is beautiful. The horns are so deftly balanced, injecting emphasis and nuance but never overwhelming. The backing vocals are an absolute delight. The inflection of Dusty’s vocal is brilliant, especially during the middle eight and final chorus. It’s an exquisite work. I Don't Want To Hear It Anymore - This is another track where the strings do a magnificent job of bringing stacks of vibe into the recording. Her voice is great again, the inflection she uses brings that edge of despair to the delivery. It’s a decent song, but the performances and recording are again the stars of the show. Don't Forget About Me - The guitar and electric piano in the intro are great here. It’s got a really nice change of feel between verse and chorus, and there’s a nice laid back swagger to Dusty’s delivery. Not an amazing song, but the feel is still solid. Breakfast In Bed - The groove that kicks in with the drums is really good. A lot of the playing is subtle, but full of feel. It’s pretty understated, but it’s undeniably cool. It’s got more of that toe-tapping swagger that seems to be the hallmark of this record. Just One Smile - This is more a more laid back ballad. There’s some more great subtle playing. I really liked the odd moment of flair from the guitar, and the use of dynamic change between the different sections really gives it a solid flow. The Windmills Of Your Mind - There’s something quite intimate about the recording of the vocal here. You can hear the subtlety of the mouth noise like she’s almost whispering the vocal. It's very restrained at the start and gradually builds and almost moves with a slow pulse as it grows. By the end, it’s got a load more zip and the dynamic has completely changed from the quiet restraint of the intro. A great production. In The Land Of Make Believe - This drifts around in a quite lovely bed of sound. I feel like it never really lands on anything particularly hooky or memorable and it perhaps pushes her vocal to slightly too high of a register to be completely comfortable, but it was still a pleasant and enjoyable wash of a song. No Easy Way Down - Smooth. Super smooth. It goes back to that laid back swagger, but again just dynamically ebbs and flows. Some of her vibrato here is just exceptional. There’s an edge of gospel to this, and I find that the little references to blues, soul, gospel etc really add an extra depth to the surface level pop of this record. I Can't Make It Alone - Another one where the strings and the vocal are really the highlights, but every part contributes. The strings in the verse are particularly excellent, and the vocal delivery of ‘something in my soul’ is so good. It fades out a little too quick, but it’s another lovely track nonetheless.
Love this album. Dusty's voice is unmistakable, melancholy and beautiful all at the same time.
I really like this one — it’s just so tastefully done. The horn arrangements, the strings, the groove — everything feels perfectly balanced, never overplayed. Dusty’s voice is smoky and expressive without ever showing off, and “Son of a Preacher Man” remains one of the most effortlessly cool vocal performances ever put to tape. What I love most is the subtlety of it all. The production feels alive but never crowded, and every player seems to know exactly where to leave space. It’s music that breathes. I keep going back and forth between a four and a five — it’s hard to find fault with something this polished and soulful. Maybe it’s not the kind of record that grabs you by the collar, but it’s one that stays with you quietly. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½
i love her voice sm oml, also first album in where I actually know a song! (Son of a Preacher Man) standouts: 1. The Windmills of Your Mind - SO good, uses her voice to its entire potential, stands out as interestingly musically from the rest of the album too! 2. Just a Little Lovin' - the instrumental on this song kills it, an amazing intro 3. I Can't Make It Alone - chorus is so overdramatic i love it def a solid 7 or 8 outta 10
A little girl power, owns her sensuality and is an equal in her son of a preacher man relationship..no cringe for me. The instrumentation and arrangements with the often sultry vocals are easy listening and I'm ok with that. Dusty owns her sensuality and morality (Breakfast in Bed) but opens up to needing a partner in What Do You Do When Love Dies. Emotionally she's all over the place as the record progresses. To all the reviews that called this blue eyed soul...her eyes look brown to me 😂 Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): Son of a Preacher Man, Windmills of Your Mind ⭐⭐⭐⭐: liked it a lot
Beautiful voice. Beautiful strings. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): Son of a Preacher Man, Don't Forget About Me, The Windmills of Your Mind ⭐⭐⭐⭐: Really liked it. Saved a bunch of tracks.
very good
Astonishing voice, that shines in all registers, thanks also to the support of an amazing orchestra. "Son of a preacher man" is the best song
Super fun. Surprised I haven't heard more by Dusty Springfield before Favorite Songs: Son of a Preacher Man, No Easy Way Down
First song was pretty good, really quick and would’ve liked more. Very 70s, type of music you’d hear on 70s on 7. So much love is fun, want to sing along. Good baseline/guitars. Son of a preacher man:banger. Had heard this before. Guitar riff is sick. Don’t like the vibe change from song 3 to 4, but song 4 was really good. Back to the ballad on song 5, no skips yet. Guitar, lyrics and singing voice are so good in every single song. Only notes for the middle is that I kind of wish some of the songs were longer. Love the background strings in the windmills of your mind, also cool song title. Mans if make believe was too short, that was a sound I wanted to keep listening to. No way way down gets the album back on track, once again just a well written song with good music behind it. Cohesive last song, very 70s, not the best on the album but not the worst. Ultimately I was very pleasantly surprised. 3.86/5
Classic
Lovely album
Fantastic voice! So much style range!
A stone cold classic. We all know Son of a Preacher Man, but there are plenty of other great tracks here. Unfortunately, one star off because her final vocal tracks were actually recorded in New York.
The title kinda gives it away; it's Dusty, in Memphis.
I did not know what to expect, but I was expecting to not like this album very much. I was happy to discover it is pretty good. The peak comes early in Son of a Preacher Man, it is a good song. The rest I found surprisingly engaging. Very nice album.
A great artist who was both popular and not afraid to push out from the mainstream
Love Dusty. We named our cat after her! Always good to hear Preacher Man, and Windmills of Your Mind is such a good song. It's a 4 from me!
Being good isn't always easy, says Dusty. And yet she seems to find singing good very easy. As you'd expect, the star of this is the honey-ish vocals, rather than any stellar songwriting, with the exception of Preacher Man, which remains a tremendously evocative song that really envelops you.
I Don’t Want To Hear It Anymore blew my mind.
Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Love this combo of singer and backing band. Enjoyable listen. Always liked Son of a Preacher Man. Hidden gem: The Windmills of Your Mind
Bright and beautiful with a golden gauzy haze. Dusty's voice always has a tinge of melancholy, which resonates with me. I'm more inclined towards Side One over Side Two, but it's all lovely. "Son of a Preacher Man" is the obvious standout, but I really connected with her cover of "I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore"and "Breakfast In Bed" on this listen. Listened on vinyl.
Instant coolness enhancer
Very well recorded and produced album. Good to test acoustics and sound signature, there is enough variety and dynamic range to test any frequency needed. This album really highlights why Oasis became the band that they are today.
Never heard this whole album before I liked it a lot
This album is just a very human expression of love in all forms. Falling in love, being in love, breakup. Happy love, sad love. Everything. I can't really imagine anyone disliking it either. The performances are amazing, she's a really strong vocalist and has a great ability to convey all those emotions into the music.
So good. Son of a Preacher Man is one of my all time faves so everything else pales a little bit in comparison. Also, I wish the orchestra was dialled back a bit at times to let her voice shine
Extra star for Son of a Preacher Man
Nice
Good dusty noises
Fucking vet genre defining album
Good
Gorgeous album, incredible voice, my only qualm is I wish it was longer, some of the songs cut off too early and I thought they could have progressed more
A wonderful example of the "blue-eyed soul" style often sung by white singers in the late 60s and early 70s. More restrained in sound, but no less so in emotional delivery, Dusty Springfield delivers a great album in 33 tight minutes.
Now that's soulful! A wonderful mix of many genres I enjoy, from jazz to bossa nova, anchored by Dusty's enchanting voice. Standouts: Son of a Preacher Man • Don't Forget About Me • Breakfast In Bed • The Windmills of Your Mind
Stripped back sound while still having some bop
Enjoyed this a lot more than her debut album. Has some really great standout tracks; the first three and last two are brilliant, and also Breakfast in Bed, Windmills of Your Mind in the middle. I thought it reminded me a lot of Carole King in places, then Checked the credits to find that she's all over them! I don't think it's as good as Tapestry, but not far off. 8/10
This album makes my soul feel warm.
C'était un album que je trouvais assez 3/5 jusqu'au morceau "The Windmills of Your Mind" qui est exceptionnel et qui monte la note à 4/5.
This is great. She must have made some HUGE improvement between her debut album and this one, because I gave her debut album a 2.
Love Dusty’s voice, some great songs on this one.
Dusty's first debut album was a big hit to me and it put a bar rather high for other Dusty records. Dusty In Memphis goes high but does not reach heights of debut album. Style and production varies naturally during career of any artist. This album takes Dusty towards phil-spector-mood. Cool and good while losing some rawness of debut.
While this album wasn’t quite as juicy as the previous Dusty album, it was nonetheless very entertaining.
Such a wonderful record! Lots of good time music with emotional tracks in there as well. Dusty's voice has always been very enjoyable to me, great production and studio work gives the tracks some extra body. They don't make music like this anymore! What I mean with that is; you can take mediocre pop music to great places by just having professionals working with the sound and recording of the instruments from beginning to end. But you can also ruin a great song with headstrong artists insisting they know what they're doing.
banger
Du miel à mes oreilles
8/10 What a voice - exquisite. As a body of music, it is a bit too smooth, maybe, to lift it to the very top for me. Something about the churning machine of Tinpan alley songwriters seems to take a bit of the heart out of the endeavour - but you cannot doubt how great this album is.
good vocals and some bangers
Dusted
Good but not amaze
8.5
What a voice. What a vibe. Super cool.
3.5

A few absolute classics, but a bit uneven and too sugar-coated at times. 4 stars
I don't think anything else really reaches the heights of "Son of a Preacher Man" here, but I thought it was really good all around. There are a few tunes that get a little syrupy for my tastes, but it's solid nonetheless. Highlights are the aforementioned "Son of a Preacher Man", "Breakfast in Bed", and "So Much Love". 4 stars.
man oh man, if I had one word to describe this album it would be lovesick. it’s so perfect in its romance and longing… “one smile would make my life worth living” and somehow it’s not overly cheesy to me, it just feels genuine for whatever reason. she’s got such a classic voice as well. adding this one to my library, would love to have it on CD.
Feet.
Classic album that gets the job done in a little over 30 minutes.
Incredible singer. Some great songs here but enough filler to leave it teetering between 3 and 4 stars for me. I’ll bump it up to 4 because I loved “Don’t Forget About Me” so much.
7.5/10
This was a really smooth blue-eyed soul album. So sweet, so soft. Like a warm hug. My Rating: 4/5
I felt like I was in Dirty Dancing listening to this. It gave Carpenters vibes. I enjoyed it
Feels like someone mixed the vibes of The Carpenters and Bread all into one and dropped in a little soul. Seems like something Forrest Gump would have on his running playlist.
When I saw her name I was so excited for Son of a Preacher Man. I haven’t heard any of her other stuff. She has a very soft voice to be backed by horns and strong vocalists, not my favorite thing. I wish her songs had a wider variety of themes. Still a great album!
Son of a preacher man will be played at least 30 times in my livingroom. Also it has 700,000,000 million streams on spotify which is insane. This album did something for me. SOLIDDDDD 7.5
I really enjoyed this album. Fave song was probably The Windmills of Your Mind. The more I listen, the more I like. I wish I could rate it like a 7, there were some songs that fell flat but I’ll definitely add a few of these to my library. Good vibes listening to it omw home from a long work day :)
need me an album called Dusty goes to outer space
Cool songs great arrangements great vocals
Chill album
very good
Спокойный, душевный альбом. А хит "Son Of A Preacher Man" - одна из моих любимых песен. В общем, 7 из 10.
Атональные индустриальные шумы под выкрики Кийа!
Quite enjoyed this one. Recognised a fair few songs too.
Son of a Preacher Man already on the Liked Songs, added Don't Forget About Me
Me ha sorprendido gratamente. Una voz que te va llevando a lo largo del disco junto a unos coros que acompañan a la perfección. 7/10
I liked this one a lot more than the other Dusty album. I'd say there were a couple of tracks I really liked rather than just appreciated. Fave Tracks: The Windmills of Your Mind, In the Land of Make Believe 3.8/5
7.3 musical hairspray like? Son of a preachers man
Dusty's voice is warm, beautiful, and soothing. I really liked hearing more of what she has to offer (I've heard Son of A Preacher Man, but the rest of the album doesn't exactly match the vibe of that song). The album is soulful, romantic, tender, and a very soothing, easy listen. I really enjoyed it.
Such a beautiful voice. Son of a Preacher Man and The Windmills Of Your Mind are my favorites.
Really pleasant album and I'm glad I got to listen to it for the first time. She's got a phenomenal voice. Only issues are that it gets a bit samey and in a couple of the tracks I don't think the instruments back her up enough, but it's still a great record Standouts: Son Of A Preacher Man The Windmills Of Your Mind So Much Love
Quite simply one of the greatest female voices of the 20th century.
Dusty at her best. Great songs, great voice, great strings. Just a lovely easy listen.
Short, sweet and to the point.
wowie zowie!! i love music. highlights - so much love, breakfast in bed, the windmills of your mind
Listens: 3 Standout Tracks: Son of a Preacher Man, The Windmill of Your Mind Second Dusty Springfield on the List: I enjoyed this a lot more than "A Girl Called Dusty". Immediately recognized the intro of Son of a Preacher Man as having been sampled by Cypress Hill's Hits from the Bong. Double thumbs up there. And the other standout track is The Windmill of Your Mind, which reminds me of Kero One's Windmills Intro, I guess because of the name, but also I just felt the two songs were somehow intertwined, conceptually. Not sure. Anyways, I think this could have been a James Bond Intro song. It's got a cinematic quality. This album was short and sweet and with two good songs and nothing terribly dull or maddening, I am inclined to rate this favorably.

Voice of an angel!!!!!!!
Fun album.
Todella hyviä biisejä. Siihen tapaan että kuulostaa monessa sämpläyksessä olevan mukana
I never realised Dusty Springfield was British. I liked this album well enough. Son of a preacher man is a great song. The rest of the album however, doesn't hit that height. It's just about good enough to give it a four.
Good stuff
Nothing stands out but yeah it was well made. 7.5/10
Har ju en klassiker, resten låter rätt ok!
A great voice and we'll put together pop songs. More singers need to put more emotion in their voice like this.
Very cozy
cool, but not really my type
3.6
Yep, this is more like it - instrumentation and soul. And so much better than just being the son of a preacher, man.
Sehr cooles Album, smoother Sound und ne tolle Stimme. Die Sängerin werde ich mir merken

What a fantastic album. I knew son of a preacher man but the story of her recording vocals really puts the album in new light.
7.5/10, that voice!!
Excellent 60s country album. Anything with The Windmills Of Your Mind on is automatically good anyway but thi album has enough bangers to stand for itself regardless.
Her debut album, which was on this list earlier, was fun, but this album has some of that same joy plus more depth and range. You can hear how much she has matured as an artist in a few years. That said, some of the later tracks on the expanded edition feel like she's casting a wide net, searching for something that will connect.
I gave her other album on this list a very low grade. Not this one. This one is a banger. Also, I almost certainly knew "Son of a Preacher Man" prior to Pulp Fiction, but its moment in that film, one of my ten favorites since the day I saw it, has become so etched in my memory that I can no longer separate Mia from Dusty.
Poussiéreuse à Memphis.
Songs to belt in the shower 4/5
Windmills of my mind and son of a preacher man
Very chill and gives me a vibe as if i’m in the car with the huzz driving during the sunset. Pretty slay
Great album. Will buy.
Doesn’t quite start off on the right foot, as the first two songs are the weakest, but as it gets going you really believe that this woman had a night with a preacher’s son. “The Windmills of Your Mind” sounds like an epic Bond theme.
Loved the album British soul meets Memphis
i love her voice and truly just how relatable these love songs are for women generally. plus the old sound to it adds a certain special quality that hits my ears just right.
Pleasant
When initially starting to listen to this album, I had very low expectations (we haven't had the best albums this week). HOWEVER, I am so pleased to be wrong, my first immediate thought whilst listening was 'This is giving Aretha Franklin' and upon a little digging they were both signed to Atlantic Records. so fantastic news, I am not going mental. This album is really beautiful from start to finish, 'Son Of A Preacher Man' & 'Breakfast In Bed', are my 2 favourites. Every cut is impactful—from “Son of a Preacher Man” to “Just a Little Lovin’”—and the album filled with compositions from song writing royalty (Including Carole King!). Throughout the album, Dusty carries everything with near effortless candour full of joy, before revealing her vulnerability on the more relaxed Goffin-King set closers, which display her trademark melancholy and uncertainty on love and life and, crucially, herself. It’s a sensuous smorgasbord, track after track of some of the most seductive quality music. A really stunning start to my Friday, I am simply blown away. (I love women) - 4/5 HF xo What a lovely change from Elvis, the incredibly talented and brilliant Dusty Springfield! Talk about another important woman in music and this album is a fine example. Just a Little Lovin' starts us off is spectacular fashion, showing you Dusty's incredible range and hitting angelic notes with ease. All backed by tight a drum line and string section. So Much Love follows in the same fashion and includes brilliant backing vocals as Dusty's incredible range cuts through. Then we have Son of a Preacher Man, just...wow. It has everything that makes Dusty Springfield an icon of the swinging sixties, we love a bit of brass, it's jazzy, it's soulful and the lyrics sound like gospel coming from Dusty. The album stays incredibly consistent throughout with beautiful slower tracks like The Windmills of your Mind symbolising the repetitive nature of memories. Can't make it alone tells a tale of pride and reluctance to mention how much their miss someone they love concludes this album is beautifully poetic fashion. Overall holy shit what an album, Dusty Springfield is an icon of the 60s and this album should have many more listens for me. 4/5 - MTW
melhor e mais bem arranjado que o último dela né mais maduro e até meio sexy. no mais é soul para pessoas brancas, mas é gostosim até vai
I wish I would’ve gave “A Girl Named Dusty” five stars. This is solid 3.5 but will bump to 4.
drei bis vier
Kinda nice
Pretty surprised that this album is English and not American. That aside, definitely a pretty good soul album. Especially pretty good for a white soul album! The highlights of this album are fantastic, topped off by the superb Son Of A Preacher. The lower parts are on the boring side, but still very listenable. Dusty's sensual crooning can become a bit too saccharine at time, but short as the album is, it doesn't overstay it's welcome. In terms of lyrics, it seems like Dusty was a feisty one. Good on her for knowing what she wants and being forward about it - although the morals of Breakfast In Bed do seem a bit dubious. Anyway, it has it's shortcomings. But on the whole, good album.
Chill. Fav: The Windmills Of Your Mind
Listenable to very good.
Good music. Some standards here.
Beautiful album
Good voice, songs are hit or miss
Makes me feel like i am in a fancy cafe <3 This album helps me to concerntrate when reading and overall is very pleasant to listen to/
Very different album to my usual listens, but that's the point of this exercise! Really classy songs, beautiful voice and strings, and obviously very familiar with the hits like Son of a Preacher Man and Breakfast in Bed. Really pleasant listen and really clear why Dusty has so many dedicated fans.
Catching up - Jazz genre. Wasn't sure I'd like it at first, I wouldn't consider this jazz but added a few songs to my liked songs (Son of a Preacher Man, which I'm familiar with, and Just One Smile)
Hmm, I thought it would save my review, but I guess not since I did it in a different browser? Anyway, Son of a Preacher Man was the only song I knew, but the album was great. She's got a really good voice, and the album was pretty cool and groovy.
I've been seeing this woman lately that would call this "sticky sweet", and I'm inclined to agree. Dusty's voice is just buttery and smokey in all the right ways.
This album feels like a relic of the past. It's got the sound of 60s sweeping arrangements. she has a sort of honeyed voice. her vocals are super forward in the mix. It's not my usual jam, I'm not really into vocal drive singer highlighted music, but I get why this is considered a classic. I get why this is an important album and the woman can sing but it sounds like it's 55 years old, which of course it is. The recording is just too dated to me. It's great, it's just not for me
Super soulful and Son of a Preacher Man is an all time great track.
Very good, very nice. Strange that she is british.
Perfect, timeless voice. Beautiful music.
I hadn't heard this before, but I really liked it.
Too many songs about loving in the morning for a 5.
Nicely done, great Voice and production. Every artist should record at least one album in either Memphis or Berlin in their career as I don't think a bad record has ever been made on either of those cities.
Windmills of your mind goat and great orchestation
Very sweet
Great album, great tones. Originally thought they were a band. Saved a couple of favourites
Great voice and a few outstanding songs. 4.4.
This isn't my favorite Dusty album, but it's still great. Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5
the title makes it sound like a live album for some reason? (it isn't.) what it is is very good though. dusty springfield has an excellent voice and you can tell she's just pouring out all of her emotions into this album. it's a really cathartic listen. while it does sometimes lean into 60's cheese, I don't really mind. favorite song: "i don't want to hear it anymore" overall: 8/10
It’s a well done album full of songs that are short and sweet. That in itself is an art form that has disappeared in the modern world. She has a great voice and I appreciated the orchestral backing. It’s a great, easy listen.
Chad. One of the best female singers.
Great singer. Pretty classy
Очень теплые ощущения вызвал альбом, будто сижу в детстве с мамой на кухне, пока она готовит завтрак. голос великолепный, пару песен запали в душу, но некоторые прошли мимо приятный альбом!
Surprising soulful and grooving for an English bird
Warm and comfortable
Significantly better than the other Dusty Springfield album on this list (so far?). She seemed like she learned to sing finally and the songs weren't terrible. Several of the songs sounded familiar even though I don't think I've ever heard any of them. Not bad, even for a country record. 4/5
The palpable feeling of longing and reflection captured in these recordings makes this work timeless and endlessly re-playable. At times saturated with pure emotion, and at others a distant, retrospective, haunting lament. Though these songs are not inherently dark thematically and lyrics are most often filled with a hopeful longing, Springfield's voice lends a dynamic counterpoint to this, coloring her words with this awesome depth. What I love about this record shares many of those same intangible features that I adore about Scott Walker's 3 & 4, it's extremely personal, human, isolated, introspective, yet amplified to this epic scale - this is what a great record is at it's core. So Much Love - Springfield paints a picture that sets the tone and character for what is to come, as well as confidently demonstrating super early into the album that she is master of a stinging post-chorus refrain. Son of a Preacherman - I had never noticed just how much the drums make this track. Its placement in the running order punctuates the first side of this work, demonstrating Springfields dynamism. I Don't Want to Hear it Anymore - Again, that post-chorus refrain is loaded this raw dawning melancholy that has kept this track on repeat. Side A draws to a close with Breakfast In Bed, a track that combines the dual dynamic forces that have built and teetered throughout the preceding songs. Though as a standalone track it doesn't feel as strong as some, it signals an awareness of what the work is as a cohesive whole, making us want to continue our journey on Side 2. Just One Smile kicks off a secure and familiar second act that is disrupted by Windmills of Your Mind - it doesn't fit, in the very best way. The stylistic change is contemplative, serious and heavy as hell. In terms of mood, it for me parallels, Walker's It's Raining Today, interestingly also released March 1969!) This rainy feeling only continues into No Easy Way Down, a track that feels like it's about falling from the heights of love. An ending relationship. As before, it is contemplative, melancholic but equally strangely hopeful. I Can't Make It Alone then offers return to the subject after time has passed, expressing the profound difficulty that lingers in the continuing situation of an ended love - self doubt. It is an extremely honest and vulnerable note on which to end the album and gives her audience only a question mark. The more I listened the more I got from this work. Initially the track order felt cohesive though not conceptually or melodically, but Springfield's ability to evoke mood, and the instrumentation of American Sound Studios makes this work so extremely consistent, that a narrative concept emerges after a few listens. This is a great album.
Not something I would typically listen to, but I can definitely see why it's on this list. Nice, easy morning listening.
Smooth as butter. A warm sonic hug. I would have never thought to seek this out or play this album. It strikes me as a great album to have on while making a proper dinner with ingredients when having plenty of time, or maybe when we have guests come over. Nobody could possibly object to this, super pleasant. Every song being 2:30 makes it accessible for dumb-dumbs like me as well. The only song I know I've listened to is Son of a Preacher Man and associate it with Pulp Fiction. Checking my iTunes catalogue I realize I (legally) own a copy of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels OST where they feature Breakfast in Bed. On youtube music In the Land of Make Believe 83K listens. Son of a Preacher Man 82 mio. I'm curious how many albums on this list have this 1000-1 ratio.
Never listened to much Dusty, but wow her voice is incredible. It's smooth as butter and oh so soulful. Now the songs themselves are not really what I'd seek out but for what I did listen to, I'm very glad I did.
Only knew one song but saved others to my list. Really nice albun
very nice voice. have heard parts of some of the songs before. very 60s, in the best way possible.
Enjoyable beyond the single
Real good, she’s got a great and recognizable voice that rivals modern superstars
Another Springy Dustfield. This time the finale. I'm surprised ol' Dusty had another millennium album in her, though I guess it makes sense. An album comprised almost entirely of covers wouldn't make sense if it didn't belong to a greater picture. I've heard absolutely zilch about Dusty in the time since the last album, though I'll continue to assume in good faith that she was, in fact, an iconic musician. I did not like this album on the first listen, though I came around to it quite a bit on my second go. The pop songwriting is good across the board and the instrumentals are all pretty immaculate - especially on "The Windmills of Your Mind". I quite like Dusty's vocals. The sultry performances are very of-their-time while also managing to be pretty distinctive. It's impressive how airtight this album is. It's difficult for me to gleam whether Dusty's vocals or the instrumentals are the stronger part of this album as they're remarkably well-suited to one another. It's also difficult for me to pick a favourite song out of the bunch. It's probably "I Can't Make It Alone". The soaring instrumentals are a point of commonality across most of the songs, though I especially like how that song builds towards it's crescendo. The aforementioned "The Windmills Of Your Mind" was also a good tune. It differentiates itself nicely from the other songs on the album with it's bossa nova influence and the "rolling" quality that the songwriting has is also pretty nice. "Breakfast in Bed" is the best showing in the songwriting department. It's very effective at holding my attention - also due to the way in which Dusty's voice rolls and oscillates. Other highlights include the "plucky" instrument from the chorus of "I Don't Want To Hear It Anymore" and the strings on "Just a Little Loving" Book time. Let's see. This album was an attempt to recover Dusty's career after female vocalists and pop music got btfo'd by rock in '68. The album had a troubled history - Dusty went mental and dropped all of her Memphis recording staff into a vat of acid (real). Had a successful single and reviewed well, but failed to revitalise her career. Dusty hated the finished product and refused to listen to the album until a year after release. Looks like Dimery is throwing a bone to the critics and music historians by including Dusty. I guess I can't complain. I like putting on airs and holding my pinky up high when the time calls for it, though I'm doubtful as to how iconic Dusty is when her career died after five albums. That being said, I did enjoy this album and feel tempted to return to it in the future. I guess I'm grateful to have listened to this one before I cunk it. ==================== Edit (8th of July, 2025): This album has held up quite nicely in the time since first listening to it. No other pop album has captured an elegant and sophisticated mystique quite like Dusty In Memphis. An endearing relic of a bygone era. Original rating: 3 stars Amended rating: 4 stars
A very pleasant listen. I knew more songs than I thought. I can understand why she’s highly regarded, even though it’s not something I’d typically listen to.
Dusty es amor.
A classic and great song interpreter. Particularly liked “No Easy Way Down”, which I had not heard before listening to this album.
Sweet 60s soul record. What a voice she had, really phenomenal. Nothing negative to say about this one, stone cold classic and will seek it out to own on vinyl.
Soulful, catchy, and beautiful. Great album . Weird that son of a preacher is on it twice ? But otherwise great album
7/10.
7/10…soul / soft pop
Sometimes I rate albums based on how well they put me in a good mood, and this one put me in a good mood. It also made me feel strangely inspired. I want to be Dusty Springfield, effortlessly cool and perpetually in love.
I like that she is the original performer on more of these than last time. I also like this more than the last one. Not much to say other than solid songs and solid vocals.
Dusty uczy mnie wiele o kobiecości i intymności. Jest coś pięknego, łagodnego i kojącego w tych kompozycjach. Mocne 8/10
Ts slaps windmills of your mind single-handedly brought it up to 8.5/10
Even though this isn’t rock it’s so fire and The Windmills of Your Mind is a beautiful song 1) The Windmills of Your Mind 2) Just One Smile 3) Son of a Preacher Man
I expected to like this album more, but it was a lot of the same thing and nothing came really close to Son of a Preacher Man. Good stuff, no doubt about that, just a little too much of the same thing.
This was a wonderful listen! I knew her name, but I don't think I could have named a song before today. I can hear her in so many artists, some performing today, and many who are no longer recording. To have people like Aretha carrying the soul torch on this side of the Atlantic at the same time Dusty was doing that work in the UK is quite a thing. Loved it and, as a bonus, it sounded wonderful, even the mono version I listened to!
good
Dusty is just a classic! Great album!
Chilleren, meget cool slut 60'er. Blev lidt træt af det til sidst. "Don't forget about me" kammer lidt over. Ellers rigtigt godt og gad godt have det på vinyl.
Great album. Very enjoyable listen.
sans commentaire
This is so much better than “A girl named Dusty”. It’s astounding how much better she isn’t when she writes her own interesting music and stops singing children’s nursery rhymes.
Sexier and sultrier than I expected. Oh and lush production.
Dope
Enjoyable album
Country. A couple of fun songs throughout.
Actually enjoyed this more than I expected. This was nice. Loved her voice and the strings in the background (but also the music more generally). I don’t know when I would return to this but it was great to have heard this.
Lovely and reminds me of my mum somehow. What a voice and what a way to convey sorrow etc. through just her tone!
Pretty fun!
the doors open. come inside and make yourself a drink. mia.
It's great to hear an album from Dusty Springfield with that Atlantic sound. It's a lovely soulful record and of course her sweet yet husky toned voice is superb throughout.
Quality tunes great vocals vwry nice with a coffee and a sunrise.
Soothing and soulful and lovely. And it also has 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 track as well, bonus!
Mixed feelings on this as an album. Did I enjoy listening to Dusty Springfield, yes very much so! Do I feel this is anything more than a loose collection of cover songs? Not really. That said, Son of a Preacher Man is a stellar track... an extra star, thanks to Mr. Tarantino!
Not always my absolute *favorite* style of music, but there's enough variation here to keep it interesting, and Dusty's voice is marvelous. 3.5/5
i *absolutely* love this oh my :))))
Really good album and she has a beautiful voice as well but it’s also just not really my thing.
Big Album, small review. D Dusty weiss wie mer am Timon siin hörgang glücklich macht. Dusty zum zweite het nomal chli me brilliert wie dusty zum erste. 4 Dusties fürs Dusty
