Reviews (page 2 of 13)
While this wasn’t difficult to listen to, i did have to question why was I listening to this. First little bit of the album had some good things to it, and then it fell flat. Never recovered after that.
Not what I expected, not for the better. Take your euro synth pop back to the early 80s and leave it there. Except for "heads will roll," that’s perfect for a Halloween playlist. Also, I'd like to hear that with a Pete Rock remix, a Butch Vig remix, an industrial mix and a house mix that uses "Dance, dance till you're dead" very prominently. 'K thanks.
More no no nos, amirite?
I don’t wanna. Nooooo. The first Yeah Yeah Yeahs album surprised me and wasn’t horrific. The 2009 scares me. Let’s see. This is an odd one. I’m sitting here kind of slack jawed. I can’t in good conscience say that this is “bad,” but man do I ever not like it. That chorus is nails in a chalkboard and the music is just electro pop that just sort of sits there. Main keyboard riff isn’t too bad, but the rest is gross to me. Oh I feel like I’ve heard this song before. Apple commercial? Boring electronica. This is music that is meant to be interrupting conversations at lousy nightclubs. Repetitive and devoid of musical value. Some autotune crooning. Autocroon as the kids call it. Maps redux. Why create this? Why bring this to the world? Is there not enough suffering? This is an atrocity. Minus a billion stars. Skeleton feet? Skeleton me. That’s it. This is so bare and horrific. I am grasping for something to hold onto. This song is a descent into hell. Dull life, eh? Hmm. I wouldn’t remind the listeners of the word dull. Oh god. It’s electronic Mumford and sons. This is bad “btw.” Oh yeah here we go. I thought it was going to a big buildup for some crescendo. If it actually did that instead of just staying with the boring intro, it would’ve been PERFECT for some Hollywood ensemble comedy with an all female cast. Alas, I have to table the writing for Bridesmaids 2 and live with this blaring in my ear. Yes, please do a whisper ballad, we’ve had too much fun! (we haven't). Fuck this was brutal. This is, ugh let me check my notes, another pop song. My Mouth, OUR HOUSE! It doesn’t even seem well played? Wow! That’s an annoying chorus. To be fair to them, this sounds like it could’ve been released 8 years later. I mean chart music was still dreadful in 2017, but they had an early track on a shiny brand of terrible. Her “sweet” voice doesn’t work for me, so when it’s so heavy in the front, it’s not a win. Cash is NOT good for you fans of excellent SPEED network game show, Pass Time. What would the crossover be between people who know that show and read this review? 100% I assume as I’m the only one who fits both descriptions. This song is sappy and unpleasant. Pass. The obnoxious drums in the background ruin any softness this one had, but it was nice to leave the Berlin synth dungeon for a few bars. Bars? Like liquor establishments? Accidental pun? I don’t know. Who cares. This sucks too! This is my personal hell. It has the palpable desolation of a parking garage. Barren concrete erected where something vibrant once stood. By “something vibrant” I am referring to music, not previous Yeah Yeah Yeah’s works. My bones ache. Please give me a good album. 0 HIGHLIGHTS: What is a Highlight? A bright spot? A song I love? It can be either. A pleasant surprise, an amazing song, and even the best of a bad bunch. Oh yeah this thing had none of that.
Didn’t do much for me. There’s none of the raw edge they had in the best parts of their early work. The first one that really felt like it didn’t belong in the top 1001 albums, regardless of personal taste.
Really really poor. Generic and unoriginal pop. How is this even in the shortlist for 'reasonable attempts in 2009' let alone the Greatest albums ever produced. Have I mentioned how pathetic this is?
Couldn't make it past the first song. Nuff said.
More like the Shit Shit Shits
Very much not my style. Heads Will Roll is obviously a monumental contribution to pop and electronic music, but couldn’t be further from my preferred style
I gave this the old college try... Convinced myself to be excited, immediately realized I was right not to be. Participated for approximately 1/8 of the recommended duration before calling it quits, then felt guilty so returned to try again after sufficient time had passed. Concluded life is too short and moved on to more enjoyable pursuits.
Heads Will Roll Soft Shock Dull Life Shame and Fortune Runaway
I forgot how strong of an album this is of theirs. Highly underrated part of their canon.
Added to like list
Upbeat classics
In my bones, this one!
"The last cool person named Karen" says another wise reviewer. Couldn't agree more, yeah yeah yeahs are electrifying. Highlights: heads will roll (classic), zero (great hook)
For an album ehich has Heads will roll this is very chill
Yeah Yeah YEAH 👅💋
I've liked the Yeah Yeah Yeahs singles, but haven't really listened to an album. But this was great! I liked basically every track to some extent. Standouts were Heads Will Roll, Skeletons, Shame and Fortune, Hysteric, and Little Shadow. The acoustic versions in the deluxe album were also really nice. Honestly, awesome album top-to-bottom.
god they are the Perfect band, truly
Awesome and a lot of fun. Innovative, catchy and a hit from start to finish.
Fun and energetic with some softer tones coming in.
Loved this album but it was tough because I heard remixes of some the songs before listening to the originals. Heads Will Roll, Soft Shock, and Little Shadow were my faves.
I love this band. I love when this band is heavy and ruckus. I probably always will associate this band with Fever to Tell, because that record really intrigued me as a teenager. This, however, is a really cool turn and evolution of the band. I actually like our clean and self reflective it is. The songs are all moving in a way thats easy to get lost in. Which is a trait of this band, no matter what they're doing, but I like this grounded approach. Yeah Yeah Yeahs are a incredible. I could listen to them any day.
Great album, love the vocals, lots of tracks added to my playlist.
This album defined my late teens/early 20s. Loved it then and love it now.
Pojma nimam, če sm at the time kdaj poslušala celega, sicer. Všeč mi je začetek z "Zero". Tak, samozavesten ritem. Ma ne, cel komad je samozavesten. U, smo že pr "Heads Will Roll". So far, all bangers. In to velja do konca albuma.
This was a great one! I really enjoyed it. Every song is fun and unique, and I often found my head bobbing along to the beat. There were a few tracks that stood out to me, but "Zero" and "Dull Life" were my favorites. "Soft Shock" was the only track that I was familiar with on the album, and I like it well enough, but I probably liked at least half the album even more.
Instant 5. There’s not a bad song on this album. It’s danceable, it’s punk and lead single Heads Will Roll is brilliant. Karen O’s vocals are phenomenal throughout, especially on Skeletons.
what the fuck was going onnnnn in 2009 good lord
amazing listen. Added to my phone. Not a bad song. First 3 are the famous bangers, but the deeper cuts are still magnificent. Melodic, thoughtful, with great atmosphere; has that classic YYY buzz vibe underneath it all. Karen O's voice perfectly balances the digital sound palate.
I feel slightly devastated that this type of music isn't popular anymore. more of a pop/pop-punk turn from their earlier work. but still love it.
Never listened to the album and loved it. Couple of catchy driving songs, mixed with a few slow melodic others that have the band's unique sound.
It's objectively probably a 3 or a 4 but a 5 in my heart.
honestly i really liked this
I was only familiar with the first two tracks until today. I really like this one.
I love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I saw them perform with symphony backing and it was truly incredible. This is such a good album. Very nostalgic for me
That was a killer album all around.
I like her falsetto. Nostalgic
Had to get out of my chair and shout!
Ethereal and heartbreaking. I love the drift in the void that follows that hyper fun burst in the beginning, like it's never enough.
Amazing! Love Karen O's voice and energy!
7/10
FIRE! FIRE! FIRE! Right from the start with Zero this album is amazing. Heads Will Rolls is so catchy even though I prefer the remixed version more. So may other catchy songs here like Skeletons, Dull Life and Dragon Queen. The guitars and drumming go so well with the female singers soft voice. Easy 5 star. Will be on my highlights at the end of the year
Yes newer music is better. First four songs are all great, none of the songs are cringe and it's over before it gets boring
Born too late to explore the world, born too early to explore the universe, born just in time to enjoy New York-based synth-punk trio Yeah Yeah Yeah's tertiary 2009 album 'It's Blitz!'. Fun, bombastic, and cool as ice, it's blitz: the 'totes epic' sound of the summer you never had. Following a stunning triple-hit of openers (including the radio-staple house-party classic 'Heads Will Roll') is an album that loses its static-shock steam as it goes on. Even still, it's all such a neon-hued entertainment that it's hard not to adore. fav tracks: Zero, Heads Will Roll, Soft Shock
Great
No. 143 This album rocks! Was already a fan of the first two hits, and I found the whole thing very engaging and interesting.
Second YYY album. Very different from Fever To Tell.
Great album. Loved listening to it, made me very nostalgic for that era of Indie pop. I hear a lot of influence thought new music of the 2020s that can be traced back to this sound. Karen O's voice is so perfect for their sound. I loved the track "Skeletons" the most.
Superb
I know tiktok loved Heads Will Roll, so I should too, but Soft Shock >> Heads Will Roll <= Runaway
When this album came out I was 31, newly separated, and completely adrift, and I had no idea until this year that this album existed. It would have been really great to be into at the time. Need a forensic accounting of how Passion Pit and MGMT were so present at the time and this was somehow invisible to me.
Way ahead of their time. This has been my ultimate favorite
When to listen: Driving upstate in the sun. Yea, it's moody, but it's got a ray of light to it musically that I love. Starts great, lags a bit as it goes through but that doesn't change my rating.
The first two albums by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were pretty good, but this is where they knocked it out of the park. There's a cohesion to this record that's sorely lacking from their others (especially the ones after this one), and it feels like all three members were at the top of their game here. Despite the fact that it was released in 2009, I still see this as one of the defining albums of the 2000s, and the best album to come out of the boom of New York bands from that decade.
Love this album so much....
runaway's insanely good
Okay this rocks
Loved, loved, loved this.
I am the target market for this album. I knew some of their songs beforehand and I was expecting the synth-heavy goth rock Siouxsie sound but I wasn't expecting to be reminded of bands like Splashdown or Metric or Eisley (especially in Hysteric).
If I were to get a tattoo, it would be say Yeah Yeah Yeah or be Karen Oh's fringe.
I was very hard on the first yeah yeah yeahs album for being basic and derivative, but with this album they went a totally different direction and ended up making something that sounded pretty new. This is one of the defining albums of that whole NY era and maybe best encapsulates the feel of hipster Bushwick world in the 2000s. Hysteric is a great song, as is zero. Heads will roll isn’t my favorite but can’t deny it’s catchy. The punk dance combo feels pretty fresh throughout. Have been going back and forth all week on this rating but it’s been a lot of slop lately on this list so I’m feeling generous.
just kept growing and growing and growing on me to a scary degree. the crowd favorite bangers that the record frontloads (and the relative lack of which going forward accounts for most of ppls reservations with this) are amazing and fun but i was rly worried that the record would have too limited a bag of tricks when these ones clearly work so well and theres no reason not to run them into the ground. but no, the record goes on to be on the whole more churning, atmospheric, and often indescribably beautiful...while still maintaining an aesthetic coherence, and ability to just slam the serotonin buttons over and over, like a less abrasive version of the effect lightning bolt has on me. and like, its hard to top lightening bolt, but adding synths and pretty singing is a pretty fucking worthy attempt. i feel like ive been taken off guard with surprise highlights so many times in this project recently!
I was excited to revisit this one as it’s been in my collection since it was released but I got stuck on a couple of songs. “Zero” might just be one of the best songs of all time… and following that up with “Heads Will Roll” is a nearly-unrivaled one-two punch. However, the album has so much more to offer. Karen O’s variety of vocal deliveries help keep every song interesting, and the increased use of synthesizers over YYY’s previous albums add welcome texture. Soft Shock, Dull Life, and Runaway have great hooks I’d remembered — but forgotten they all came from the same album. I was newly impressed by the groove on Dragon Queen, a new favorite after two plays. In returning to “It’s Blitz!” I found an album that seems to have grown on me without even listening to it. I’ll be coming back for more, and delving a little more seriously into the rest of YYY’s stuff that I’ve missed over the years. Fantastic.
This was great. I enjoyed it. Stand out song - dragon queen
Yeah yeah yeah!!! This album rules. A bit of a nostalgia bias here because this album came out right in the middle of my college tenure and was just constantly on at every party and dance club. Heads will roll obviously but also zero and skeletons. I've gotta say this album hit just as hard and sounded just as fresh to me today. Also love the album art and title. Just all around fantastic album.
Love it. It’s turned down a notch from fever to tell but Karen O carries it off brilliantly. First two tracks are the bangers but the rest more chilled and thought provoking. Yeah worthy of the 5
Listened driving to and from rehearsal. Not sure how I missed this one when I was in my indie rock obsession in university back in 09. Absolutely loved this one! Bangers from front to back.
Heck yeah! Love this album!
Excellent!
Karen O and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are so impressive, and this whole album was great. I love the subtle techno notes and the beautiful vocals and rhythms. Five stars!
Not my usual style but I can recognize a perfect album when I hear one. Zero, soft shock and hysteric acoustic are brilliant. And of course the iconic heads will roll
This album showcases a band - and a voice - that can inhabit different emotional spaces, but is always grabbing your hand and leading you Somewhere. There’s an energy and quality that makes me glad to join them. Love the rock-pop vibe, urgency, and relative lyrical quality - all of which which reminds me positively of my favorite album from Paramore (their self-titled from 2013). Favorite songs include most of them. I was disappointed with their earlier “Fever to Tell” but really, really enjoy this one. 4.5/5.0
I love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I haven't jammed a full album before. I really enjoyed Heads Will Roll. Great album. I am fining myself straight vibing to this. I would listen again.
Punky and fun, but don't know if I would listen to it again
yeah yeah yeahs ate with this one, a solid 5/5
Really, really good this. Yeah Yeah Yeahs the most bankable band in the biz.
I was OBSESSED with Karen O when I was 16, and this album was the reason Fav songs: Zero, Skeletons, Heads will Roll
Ok heads will roll just rocks. I kinda like skeletons, its a bit of a pace change, but reminds me of "of monster and men" songs, and i love them. I just checked, turns out they covered them! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvgcBYAyTyk I love this band, and song. I like hysteric. I think in spite of a couple of 3/5s on the album, the couple of 6/5's songs on it gives this my first 5
Uhhhh, yes please! Back to back perfect.
Excellent album with a lot of diversity to the sound of the songs. Hard to get tired of her voice. Obvious banger is Heads Will Roll. Nice switch up with the acoustic versions at the end as well.
Yeah this was sick. It's a pretty mad feat for one record to be such an influence on modern indie, pop and punk. Respect to them. This was class. 8.5 / 10 Best track/s: Dull Life, Zero, Runaway, Soft Shock
This was an amazing album. I wasn’t too familiar with it but I was familiar with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I did not expect to like this album so much, but I was surprised! All of the songs were great, and I loved how the first half of the album had more upbeat songs, and the second half had slower songs.
5/5. Outstanding album that I think everyone should give a full listen at least once. It's a fantastic piece. The singer is wonderfully expressive, using volume and texture to greater effect than most. I feel this is somewhat at the cost of vocal melody execution, which can feel loose and outright lost at times. Maybe that's by design. The instrumentation does more than enough in putting a strong structure around her voice. That's where the Yeah Yeah Yeahs really kill it for me here; the way they use their keyboards and guitars is supreme. Final thoughts are that every song is good in its own right. I was expecting to like "Heads Will Roll" the most, but several beat it out. There's a lot of variety here, and at no expense to cohesion. They maintain their iconic sound the whole way through. Awesome. Standouts: Dull Life Runaway
Loved the singer, the songs so much on first listen I'm just slapping a 5 on this to confirm at a later date. Zero immediately reminds me of Bjork on A Day Called Zero. Other songs the playful way she bends her really pure voice outside of a pure tone like Molly Rankin, always singing just on the edge of badly, love that. Also the bagpipe synths and military drumming on Skeletons, beautiful.
Love this album! Solid all the way through imo. I wasn’t certain why I had listened to it a ton. My sister who was visiting claimed it was her doing. Regardless my old iPod had a lot of Yeah Yeah Yeahs in rotation. Probably not the entire album but most of the tracks were familiar. There also must be a remixed Heads Will Roll track that I’ve listened to on a dj set on heavy rotation.
I’ve been meaning to listen to this album, and damn it’s good.
love
Nota de musica yeah!
I wish more people talked about yeah yeah yeahs
I was unfortunately checked out of current music for much of the 2000 aught's - partly because I was married to a person who had almost no interest in keeping up with music, and I partly blame living in NYC where there wasn't much in the way of alternative radio, and there was no extra money (or interest) for going out to shows - and so the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are exhibit A of the types of bands I was missing out on. This album is perfect pop-rock and I feel like a dummy for never having heard it. Better late than never.
Great
Hadn't heard of them, will definitely listen to more of their stuff
loved it. Heads Will Roll is maybe over-played and made me think this wasn't going to be great. Every song was better than that one.
reminded me of my youth. maybe thats why i give it high score. Its dripping with nostalgia of my high school years and all the great music that came out in the 2000s.
And i thought that Fever To Tell was a great album. It's Blitz! managed to take everything that made that album great and cranked it all the way up to 11. It already has a lot of the same musical beats i expect from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs including the loud and rough guitars, Karen O's vocal style and a lot of the same lyrical themes from that album. But the one big thing that this album added is an ARP Synthesizer which ended up turning this album into more of a synth-punk album and i love what the synths added to this album. The album also never hitched at any point and remained consistently enjoyable throughout. I absolutely loved this album and would definitely give some songs way more listens. Best Song: Heads Will Roll Worst Song: Skeletons
I've never really asked any of my peers about this but I suspect that for many of us who came of age during the Great Recession the term "recession pop" is never going to be cute or funny or ironic on account of the sheer fucking horror it invokes - your upcoming internship vanishes, then your evening/weekend job cuts everyone's guaranteed pay and just goes straight commission, then you wander into a job fair where there's exactly one (1) employer hiring for non-engineering majors and it's fucking Allstate Insurance, then your dad calls and tells you he got laid off again, and at some point you just wander, dazed, back to your shitty apartment down the hill from campus (stopping at a pre-med advisement seminar along the way because you can pretend to be anything for free pizza) and hope somebody's throwing a party tonight. *We're going nowhere so we'll just dance 'til we're dead.* *It's Blitz!* isn't strictly a recession-pop album (although there are feints in that direction, most notably on "Heads Will Roll") but it's maybe the best representation of what that exact time felt like - the Yeah Yeah Yeahs camped out in Tornillo, struggling to find inspiration, writing and rewriting and tearing up their progress and rewriting again, spending money they don't have on a record that'll never make back what they owe. "Skeletons" feels like the sound of an entire generation marching towards its own funeral. And when Karen O sings "Run, run away/ No sense of time" she's modeling our collective coping mechanism. It's the soundtrack of a life spent forever in the red. I love it and it also hurts to listen to.
Loved it
This has to be one of the best albums of the 21st century. Not a bad song on it.
Nice
Already love this album 9/10
Loved it.
One of the rare occasions where I'm giving a five to an album that I'd never heard before coming across it on this list.
My favorite album of their
Yes yes yes!
It's better to burn out than to fade away".
Such a great album. Karen O's voice is magnificent. 5*
I liked this album a lot. This was my first experience with this group and these songs. I will seek out more music from this group.
I love the heavy synth and moody dance beats here and the slick production, but Karen O's breathy, emotive vocals always grab my attention over everything else, delightfully! All the tracks feel unified without being samey; I only knew a few Yeah Yeah Yeahs songs going in and will definitely be seeking out more after this! Best: "Zero" Worst: "Hysteric"
hjälpte mot flytt ångest
Loved the vibe of this one!
Love the yeah yeah yeahs. I was introduced to them with Maps but I find this album more polished and interesting.
I knew Heads Will Roll already and I'm glad I got to hear more. I enjoyed it a lot.
Yeah yeah yeah!!!
Such wonderful 2000s/2010s vibes, truly wonderful. Perfect level of chill but also hype. Who knew they made heads will roll. Fiya!
Great hits and nice songs overall! Heads will roll, Runaway
As much as I love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' more rock first couple of albums, this is my favorite. It should be used as an example of how to "go electronic" while still staying edgy and not alienating your fan base.
Tremendous album! Magnificent!
Haven’t listened in ages….total banger!!
I love the vibraphone-esque tones on Soft Shock This album reminds me that there is a ton of great stuff out there that doesn't really make its way into the public listening sphere. Going into it I thought "this will be an easy 4 star" but it is better than I thought. The build and flow of the songs are masterful
zero hysteric
A great album. Not sure why the debut isn’t the album in this list unless both are included.
🙂
Solid, never listened to them before, great from the first note.
Best album of all time???
I had high hopes for this since the Yeah Yeah Yeahs wrote one of the best songs of all time - Maps, and definitely my favorite song to come out of the early 2000s scene in NYC. I wasn't disappointed this album is really good. I love how the group meshes synth, drum, and guitar into such an interesting post-punk dance soup. I saved more than half this record for future listening and I'll be listening to this in full a couple more times for sure. Really solid and it took so long for me to listen to more Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Great addition to this list, they are keeping on the tradition of NYC art-rock that Talking Heads were doing decades earlier. 5/5
I love this record.
I like this one. I might put it in my iTunes. I didn't know one of the songs was theirs. I liked the alt rock sound. It reminded me of when I was in school. Which was when this album was released. I am not sure how I missed it
Heads will roll natürlich ein zeitloser Banger.
I listened to it twice and really enjoyed it both times!
I thoroughly enjoyed this album. I understand why it is so popular now. Is it a reach to say that this inspired the sound of MBDTF? Solid 9.
Suprisingly amazing combination of indie rock and electronic music. While album includes alternate versions of 4 songs, their accoustic nature amplifies soft vocals to the point where they are better compared to original versions. While rating it 4 would be logical, since I see little chance of relistening the whole project, it includes Head Will Rolls - it's a 5. +Heads will roll +Soft shock (acoustic)
Wonderful and so happy to get this A1 gift from this great musical toy! She’s just so excellent and the tunage so varied and compelling.
Own this one on vinyl, had to spin it at one in the morning (at a moderate volume) :-) 13 year old me thought this is a perfect record 28 year old me thinks this is a perfect record
yeah
For Heads Will Roll Alone, it’s 5 stars
Just in time for football season!

Loved it! I knew some of the songs, but the entire album is so cool.
Honestly loved this. So fun, good range and depth. Can’t believe I’d missed it!
I'm pretty sure I've never been cool enough for this music. That doesn't mean I don't like it. It's a great combo of weird, catchy and hyper-produced. I actually quite liked it. Well done to all three Yeahs.
Before this, I really only knew the Yeah Yeah Yeahs from that time the lead vocalist got featured on a song by Swans. Now I know that the one thing Dance-Punk was missing is women, as is the case with most kinds of dance and punk, and quite honestly just music in general outside of pop. I love the atmosphere of the whole album and the singer herself brings a lot to the overall sound. A good mix of some dancey stuff and some really nice, layered, artsy songs. Also this album's Runaway is significantly better than Kanye's runaway, fight me.
A thrilling reinvention. With synths replacing raw guitars, 𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘉𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘻! turns dancefloor-ready beats into something urgent and emotional. Karen O’s voice is the anchor — soaring, snarling, vulnerable — often in the same breath. From the explosive 𝘡𝘦𝘳𝘰 to the aching beauty of 𝘏𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤, the album balances energy and intimacy with ease. It’s bold, stylish, and deeply human. A rare case where going pop didn’t mean selling out — just leveling up.
Love the raw power of this one! It’s tough to rival the awesomeness of the first three tracks here. Solid album from beginning to end.
Loved it! Makes me wanna listen to more. Great instrumentals and vocal work. 'Heads Will Roll' is amazing and my fave pick from the album.
I haven't even finished this album yet as I'm writing these notes. I usually do, but I don't need to for this album. First time listen, and I will have this bitch on repeat. Maybe I'm biased because I love alternative music, or that I'm already familiar with a small handful of songs by the Yeah Yeah Yeah, but I do think it's the biasness talking when I say this album is really, really good. Side note: One of my all time favorite album covers
Loved it
How have I completely forgotten about this album? It's fantastic. Welcome back!
Deffo saving this - good recommendation
I can’t believe I’ve never listened to this album. I knew heads would roll but the whole album together is fantastic. Hysteric and the acoustic version blew my mind.
Heads will roll fire album yayyyy
The glitter's all wet :)
Love the YYY. Beautiful album no skips
2008. New York. Synth-punk, alternative pop, synth-pop, pop rock. !!!!!
Awesome upbeat vibes. Comparable to M83. Kind of dance rock like Racing, but smoother and more airy and synthy. Some more ambient stuff thrown in there too. Fantastic album
Solid
Would like another serving for this please. Amazing vocals, first two tracks got my attention. Rest was quite some change in pace but still loved it.
A masterpiece of 2000’s indie pop. Gorgeous album.
A true bop. Reminds me of the days of labouriously adding the correct album covers to each pirated track on iTunes so that there were no blanks when flicking through them on my iPod nano. I am old.
5/9
Good stuff
this banged
Loved it! So solid from top to bottom.
AWESOMEEEE loved the vocals
Close to perfection. Just brilliant
Great album! It's more polished, but it still has a "raw" feel.
An extremely strong one-two punch to open the album with "Zero" and the iconic song "Heads Will Roll". However, it mellows out after that and doesn't maintain the electricity of the first two tracks. Still loved it though - especially the incredible album cover, which I think is one of the best ever. 4.5 rounded up
Yeah yeah yeahs bang hard. I am surprised to see this one here, even more excited because then Fever to Tell is somewhere as well. Sick.
Yeah!
Loved this album when it came out and it’s still fantastic. Even played Hysteric at my wedding.
Karen O and co. can do no wrong o7
Fantastic - the first 3 tracks are literally perfect 2000s Indie bangers
I really love this album. It was not my first listen to it, a lot of the songs blend electronic sounds with guitars and the vocals over it are just a joy to listen to.
Classic album from a great band. Great variety and nothing that felt like filler
There are a few albums that I've willfully consumed to death, this is one of them. I wore Blitz! out over the course of several years when it was released. Now, when I see this in my library I actively avoid it, fearing another listen would degrade the experience, the album and the band even further. This was a nice excuse to bring it into the light, blow off the dust and get into it again. That was nice. Now, let's wave goodbye. Put Blitz! back under the floor with the other albums and bands like BRMC, Built to Spill, Parquet Courts, Air, and so many others...
Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ third album starts with a blitz. “Zero” and “Heads Will Roll” will get the crowd going, but it's “Skeletons” and the other slower tracks on “Its Blitz!” that make this electronic revolution of YYYs sound work. Despite changes in their sound, YYYs still maintained the mix of frenetic energy and passionate restraint that make their albums so fantastic.
Took a dancier turn from Fever to Tell and it works great for them. Still very identifiably Yeah Yeah Yeahs but with a shiny new toy.
Good shit.
Very nice! Very energizing!
Nice Voice, great energy.
Of it's time
One of my favorite bands, just excellent rock.
Loved this so much, have never listened before but will be on heavy rotation now
I'm not sure how I did not know this album existed when it came out because it's right up my alley.
Excellent. Nostalgia.
Excellent album love it!!
What this has done is remind me how much I love this album and I don't listen to it enough! After two very punky albums this is the perfect balance of punky and melodic. Some absolute bangers. - side note find the footage of Skeletons performed at T in the Park with the bag pipers. Brilliant.
Don’t have much to write, I really loved this all the way through. Not my first exposure to the YYYs but I’m not hugely familiar.. but this fit my vibe, certainly for today
This album is fantastic. About the third listen and I started to get it. Especially the acoustic songs at the end. Solid.
I liked it a lot. The Isley brothers are a classic but I’d never listened to an album all the way through. This type of music, while objectively fantastic, is not always what I want to listen to. But it’s great nonetheless the less
Even if this isn't as baller as their first few releases, this is still a (mostly) fantastic listen from front to back.
Indie sleaze... Heads Will Roll changed my life
Absolutely fantastic. I really loved this album. After I was finished I immediately checked more out from them.
I love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but this is definitely not their best album... Although, I'm conflicted with how to rate it.
Incredible album! So many hits and the acoustics at the end are so unique to their originals.
Not quite as great as the first two, but still ..
Hysteric, zero, heads will roll, soft shock
Definitely had all my favorite songs from this artist
Always liked the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and love heads will roll. The rest of the album is pretty good as well. I’m not sure it is a five star album, but I do like it significantly more than the last few albums I gave 4 stars to so here we are.
Includes the fantastic "Heads Will Roll". A very energetic and fun album.
I loved this album. I came into it only knowing one song, but left with multiple on my playlists. Would listen again, did listen again.
Do potańczenia i do podumania. Czasem rock, czasem pop, czasem dance (till you're dead). 9/10
Standout Tracks: - Zero - Heads Will Roll - Soft Shock - Dull Life
What a great album. This is my nostalgia
Lär ju va deras bästa skiva. Runaway, HEads will roll etc. Tredje skivan tydligen. Kanske borde lyssna mer?
First five star album! And finally a female voice. The gender balance of this list so far is horrifying.
I was going to give it a 4 but after compulsively listening to it another three times throughout the day, decided it has an undeniable appeal and deserves that extra star.
whatever
Mega, some songs I have heard before a lot and just a familiar tune
Fairly certain the Yeah Yeah Yeahs will always be a 5/5 for me.
What a surprise! All it took for me to like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs was for them to basically change genre completely. Great album.
I loved this album when it came out, and it's still holds up 15 years later. What a fun and nostalgic listen.
Fell in love with YYYs in high school. This album is so nostalgic and absolutely holds up. 5/5
amazing albu, Karen O is an artistic genius
Great energy. Liked every song
Another amazing record from Karen O and Co. This is one that was on constant replay for me when it was released. Really all of their albums are great and I’ve enjoyed keeping up with them over the years as well as Karen O’s solo and side project offerings, make sure you check out Lux Prima with Danger Mouse after diving back into the back catalog. Over recent years the single Heads Will Roll has become a Halloween playlist staple and I’m here for it.
Heads will roll
I loved this album. Listening to it felt cinematic, I could see the story they were trying to paint through the music which is always beautiful. I think the acoustic versions are the highlights of the project, I would like to hear the acoustic version of all of the songs tbh.
Love this album. Karen O's voice just exudes that confidence and cool that hooks you in. The songs are powerful and electric. Makes you want to rock out on the dance floor like a carefree youth.
While it doesn't have any single song that's as good as Maps, it's overall a much better album than their first.
Fun, usually-quite-energetic album, with some staying power. Based on just one listen, I’d say either my favorite songs were in the second half…or maybe it just grew on me. Either way, “Runaway” stands out, as well as “Dull Life” and the “Dragon Queen” for very different reasons. Let’s call it 4.6 so I can round up to a full 5.
FUN
Indi-rock. Not my cup of tea.
Rap vibe
I haven't heard much of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but I've liked everything I've heard. This, however, is next level greatness. Too often when a band starts off as guitar/bass/drums and then adds synths, it's because major label execs got their hooks in, brought in a flavor-of-the-month producer, and tried to squeeze a hit or two out of them. In this case, though, the synths and keyboards are a sign of a band growing and maturing. It's an amazing record. Also, "Heads Will Roll" slaps.
Yes please!
It's a good album
Holy shit I loved this album. Excellent vibes all the way through, even added a few to my playlist. Similar vibes to Sleigh Bells. Good tempo throughout the whole album and would love to listen to more of their stuff
It's hard to classify exactly what genre the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are in. Indie dance rock? Pop rock electronica? Heads Will Roll was the dance rock hit from this album. I love Karen O's voice. This came out the same year as The XX's album and you can hear some echoes in this. We're all prisoners of our own times. It's hard to make an album where no songs are duds or filler and everything doesn't sound identical. This is good. Little Shadow is different but showcases what's great about the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
I think the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have a 3 perfect album trilogy and this is the final piece. Zero is a perfect song. Personal enjoyment: 5/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5
Oh to be 22 again.
sehr gutes Album
Good album, the way which the band used an Alchemy Synth was unique and punchy. There was one song in particular that shone past the others in terms of lyrics, in my humble opinion I'd have to say it was Dull Life. I really enjoyed the baseline, drums and vocals on this song, and the upbeat sound contrasted well against the misery of the lyrics. I honestly thought the chorus was the best part of the whole song, "we've seen the nightmare of the lies that you speak, the beast that I lie beneath is coming in". It's been a while since I've listened to an album with lyrics that were as poetic as these, so I'd absolutely recommend this album to anyone that likes Synth music due to its variety of tones and high production quality
I've said it before and I'll say it again, this tour was one of the most fun shows I've ever been to. I havent listened to this full album in years but "Dull Life" is one of my favorite Yeah Yeah Yeahs songs. Holds up! Dance jams, rockers, and Karen O slow ballads, I just love this crew.
this record makes me feel like i'm a british teenager doing drugs for the first time in a field
Margaret’s favourite
A nice suprise
This was the era for sure, I think the negative feelings I harbour towards this are entirely rooted in the music that I know was inspired by this, and most of that is shite. But yea what do I know 5 stars
Mega!
This album fucks. No other way to put it.
Love me some Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I'm of the opinion that they only got better since their debut, and this one is a massive step in that regard.
Electro glory from the height of 2000’s electropop
nice, punky feel
Mellow nice. I’ll try to relisten.
Desconocidos para mí. Me voy a hacer fan.
Better than I remembered, and I remembered it being great.
Eh. Not really my vibe. End track was kinda good. They compose the music good, but the lyrics are kinda random.
Always loved Karen O’s voice and that indie sound with buzzing guitar licks. Their breakout hit Heads Will Roll is iconic marvel. I found most every song on the LP compelling. No wonder Spin rated the album top 2 of that year
On review 203 I said I had never heard of this band and loved it. Now 729 days later (almost exactly two years) I have seen them live twice and love them. So what a great discovery from this list.
Love this album, it was one of my favorites in 2009
LOVE THIS ALBUM SO MUCH
4.5 - Thought this was going to be a solid 4 album, but it was actually so good. I had only really listened to the big hitters, but this album had so much more
I take back every bad thing I’ve said about the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. This shit slaps
own
AWESOME
Fun nostalgic
Super good stuff!
I was so excited to this as my pick of the day. Any reason to listen to this album is a great one. 5 star classic
Totally my kind of music! One of the first albums I've received that I’ve enjoyed from top to bottom.
So so fun!
Ah, a Yeah Yeah Yeahs album, and one of their finest at that. "Runaway" is an eternal masterpiece, and "Zero" is a perfect opener.
I think this album is like an isolated triumph of pop based rock in a time when it stands as an anomaly. I wish there were more albums that had this lush fun edgy feel.
One of the most enjoyable albums I've listened to in a while.
Loved it! Super upbeat and great jams
I LOVE this band/album. So good.
A rock revolution that was instrumental in the craze.
Interesting. 5/5
Great fucking album. The more dance/pop oriented sound fits Yeah Yeah Yeahs really well, and Karen O has a superb voice throughout. It nearly lost me in the middle, but quickly brought my attention back into it with all strong songs til the end
Yes. More of this.
Absolutely fire, I have heard it for the first time 10 years ago and it still hits hard.
I only knew Heads Will Roll, first time hearing the whole album and I really dig it! Post-punk is one of my favorite genre but oftentimes its woefully underrated/unoriginal a lot of the time. Not this album, the punk voice with the heavy rock tune mixed with the whacky electronic noises makes the whole thing masterful!
This was a surprisingly good album. The vibe is upbeat and cool. Very consistent. A very easy listen.
Really good, never heard this before besides "heads will roll". Solid album.
really fun super vibey every track good 5/5
I liked hysteric and zero and skeleton
A few things. This far in, obviously my perception of 4 vs 5 is evolving. I did Fever to Tell as a 4, but that's because I really liked some songs, but mostly the more minimal ones. But this album has a lot more atmosphere to it. Skeletons is really good. It also has the acoustic version of Hysteric which means a lot to me. Also, Little Shadow is just a beautiful song to me. So, this one is a 4.5 for me, despite Fever to Tell being the more appreciated one.
The purpose of this exercise isn't really to be objective, but even then I *really* can't be objective about this. "Zero" is one of my all time favorite songs, and as time has gone on I've warmed more and more to the ballads, which I initially didn't like when I heard this album years ago. Sort of funny the YYYs did a synthpop album one time at (what's now) the midpoint of their career and decided to never do that again. What's even funnier is how naturally it worked for them. Fuck it...
Knew the first three songs ripped, nice to confirm the rest of it dies too!
A lovely album from beginning to end, grungy guitars and keys, Karen O howls and growls and can sing so softly and sweetly. Fantastic album and extra cool to have the deluxe version on Apple Music which had additional acoustic versions of the songs.
Finisiomo rey
This was not what I was expecting after listing to and loving “fever to tell” an album of raw emotion. This album is much more refined, with synth and dance beats but Karen O’s voice and lyrics remain just as powerful. This album is amazing, I’d call out a few favorite songs on the album but they are all great. Listened twice and the arrangement of the songs is perfect. Turn this one up! This album gets a 5 plus from me. In looking at the album art of “it’s blitz” I have to compare it to “fever to tell” which like its music is chaotic, loud, powerful maybe even a little ugly (but in a good way). “It’s blitz” is very clean, very polished but still a powerful image. Amazing how both albums cover convey the music within. And both covers could be art on the wall.
I loved every song. Amazing!
Fantastic. One of the best albums I’ve seen on this list (along with Beck’s Guero). This might have been the peak for them, as far as I’m concerned. One of my favorite albums, period.
Oh man - I had but written off this band as a relic of the noughties garage rock revival - but what a banger factory of a record. Song after song of memorable hooks and even though I’d heard this over a decade ago - I felt it was just yesterday that I was playing this album. Who would have thought the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are a breakthrough for their era. Good stuff.
Second best Yeah yeah yeahs album (after Cool it down)
I like the album a lot and you can tell it’s from 2009 cus they had so many eggs back then and they were cheap so it’s kinda interesting to see how they were so wasteful back then w egg respire ces. Lord only knows how many times they took that photo too tbh I’m disgusted
Very iconic, definitely got some hits!
♡ one of my favorite bands ♡ favorite: heads will roll, dull life, and runaway
