Reviews (page 4 of 13)
I love this band and album.
Good.
Really good album, I liked Zero, Heads Will Roll and Skeletons the most.
This is my first 3Y album and I loved every bit of it!
2009. Third album from them. Album was leaked so they had to publish it earlier.
Heads Will Roll geht immer immer wieder.
4.25 - Oh, okay. Maybe I do like this band. I thought Maps was their best song, buts it’s Heads Will Roll and I didn’t know that was their song.
Love the first few tracks on this and though I enjoyed it all, felt it dropped off a bit as it went on though.
Sounds kinda like Metric crossed with Siouxsie and the Banshees. Dancy music with rock sensibilities and a little bit of punk flavor. Some of the tracks use analog synths, and there's a sprinkling of some krautrock sound as well. Very professional deliberate production.
After sampling a Yeah Yeah Yeahs tune once or twice a year over the past few years, finally an excuse to listen a bit more. Gotta say: I had a wonderful time.

This album is pretty awesome. 4/5
excellent album. seems like a more modern take on 80s synth rock. i might consider getting this one. really liked "Zero", "Heads will Roll", "Skeletons" and "Shame and Fortune".
Wow! This blew me away! This was really good! I liked the vocals. I liked the songwriting. I liked the energy. The electronic noises actually added to the song I stead of took away from it. Not really s low point in the album. Solid.
I‘m at a 4,5
Great album, but their best is still Fever to Tell.
Solid album, even though some of it melts together/is fairly forgettable
This was good
Great album! Quite tuneful!
My previous knowledge of the band consists of knowing their name and most often confusing them with the 5,6,7,8s. I expected nothing from this band, as I'm learning to do with this list. I'm frequently disappointed based on my preconceived notions and am rarely pleasantly surprised based on those preconceptions. This album was absolutely in the pleasant surprise category and I really wish I had experienced it in 2009. I think it would have been fully integrated into the list of albums I'd run into a burning building to save. This was really good, and I'm definitely going to be adding it to my personal collection, along with exploring more of their music.
Attention-grabbing intro track goes right into one of the coolest songs ever, "Heads Will Roll"; it's hard to find synthpop that sounds as badass as the massive drama those cascading synth lines + claps create. Karen O's vocal chops are consistently excellent across the album as well- she has a unique, punkish drawl combined with beautiful high vibrato.
For some reason Yeah Yeah Yeahs always struck me as one of those bands that released one good album, followed by an endless stream of mediocrity. How I couldn't have been more wrong! Until now I was only familiar with Fever To Tell, and honestly this is just as good. It's a lot less punky and raw, but is still super groovy and I love how they take a more electronic approach in general, taking their sound in a really interesting direction without sacrificing the sound that makes them so unique.
Canción favorita: Zero, Runaway y Heads Will roll obviamente.
side a is bangers only
Sympa
Love Karen O, she is a great lead for the band.
Pleasantly surprised by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who I really don't know much about other than "Maps", which nowadays just annoys me. Great indie pop dance album. Great voice, production, melodies. Really solid.
A great varied indie rock / pop album.
Always liked the yeah yeah yeahs Simpsons: No
A lot of good stuff here, it does fade as it goes on but still quite enjoyable, really want to give a 4 for how much I enjoyed half of the album...we'll see
A real surprise and a very good album. I'd heard of the band but never listened to them before. This is a belter
Really raised the bar for me on what I could expect pop to be. Also the first release of theirs I was able to pick up on release.
Pretty decent, although not anything incredible
oooo 2009. Heads Will Roll immediate banger on first listen. love the guitars on this album
🐜🦟🐜🦟
Heads will roll - tune. Best song so far. Needs more listens
It’s a 3.5 but I’m giving it a 4. Some of the songs went on a bit too long and were a bit boring but I overall liked the album
Really good sound. I like the energy and the voice. Song"heads will roll" has an awesome sample. I will listen to it many times again. Also liked "dull life", unbelievable song. Overall simple texts, good sound and energy. I don't even know 3 or 4 stars to put. Maybe 4, because I would put this album on my backgrounds for routine many times. Not all songs I liked so much, but 80% is great
Off with head!! Ok so it has a banger song. This is a pretty good album, I would own this one for sure. It's fun!
Très agréable
Hmmm, okay this is an interesting one. It's more my typically vibe, but I've only every heard "Heads Will Roll" before. It reminds me of Florence and The Machines first two albums very very slightly. I think this is one that could grow on me. I actually really ended up liking most of it, which I wasn't expecting. I think my faves at the moment are "Soft Shock", "Dragon Queen", and "Hysteric". This is an album I can see myself coming back to somewhat often
It's Blitz! has a much more experimental tone than previous Yeah Yeah Yeahs works, and I'm here for it. Love the electronic aspects integrated with a really solid rock album. Overall I don't know if the whole album gels for me as well as I really wished it would, but it's got some great tracks and cool moments. The album is uptempo and gloomy all at once. It's a unique feeling that I don't know quite how to process after only one listen. Lyrically and vocally it is restrained and I wish Karen O had let it go a little crazier like how it began with "Zero." The band goes hard and the synth is dying to be unleashed, wish we had gotten a tad more of that. Standouts are "Zero" - this one has been a favorite of mine for years - "Skeletons," and "Hysteric." Overall this is probably a 7 or 8 out 10 for me. Pretty strong, and it's growing on me the more I think about what I just heard. Definitely want to go back for more, and got a few good tracks for my daily playlist.
I was bit nervous to get another Yeah Yeah Yeahs album so soon after not enjoying Fever to Tell very much, but I think this a group that has gotten better over time. Cool It Down is still my favorite album of their's, but this one really good as well.
Enjoyed this beginning to end.
Who knew would listen to the dance till your dead song today. Mostly listened to on the bike so i feel like i should give it another listen in a quieter atmosphere but some fun beats!
Here's a band I really missed out on when they were in their heyday. I had only heard "Heads Will Roll" so was very pleasantly surprised by this one. It kicks off in great style with "Zero" and there's even a traditional Irish feel to "Skeleton." Karen O brings all kinds of energy and elevates the proceedings. Really enjoyed this.
Of those groups coming out of the early 2000s NY indie scene, i think yeah yeah yeahs are overshadowed by bigger groups like The Strokes, Interpol and LCD Soundsystem, but they were and still are a really good band. This is a great indie pop album that sounds both of its time and still fresh. Karen O puts on a terrific performance on most of the songs here, very talented frontwoman. Love the dynamism of Heads Will Roll and the like, but I especially enjoy when they slow it down a bit. Hysteric is a lovely song that I always like to hear.
Pretty good
Fun album so good songs not much replay value
What a strong start with zero and heads will roll. Love the overall vibe with this electro pop that just rocks enough and her piercing voice!
I may not have enjoyed this as much on a different day, but I was really vibing with it for some reason.
8 Some pretty sick riffs and i love the all the distorted basey synths defo talkes me back to me teens!!! Karen O one of the cooolest singers of the noughties for sure
Very cool. Mucho enjoyment
Great high points on this record, I've always wished they'd just rock a bit harder though. The quieter songs can feel a bit lukewarm to say the least
A solid little synth-y album. It gets extra points for Heads Will Roll.
Good
I enjoyed listening to this but I think I need a bit more time with it.
Good
Smooth blend of pristine vocals and electronica without compromise on lyrics or punch. I love the sound of this album, and I like the overall vibe. Very enjoyable.
Delightful
Famous start, and then the second half surprised me with that singer songwriter style 7/10
Yes yes yes to Yeah Yeah Yeahs!
Their third album. Rock / Punk / Electronica. Zero is a really cool opening salvo to have on the album and followed by the energetic Heads Will Roll. Enjoyed those first two tracks. In fact the first half of the album is actually very good. It does a drop off a little after that but is still good and well produced.
This was a great album, really enjoyed the vibe of it. The lead singer has a beautiful and strong voice. 8.5/10 album
What a beauty.
Bueno, me re gustó.
3.5 in my book. Fun distinct sound, would definitely listen again
I hate that I'm saying that an album that came out when I was 25 sounds dated now, but... it does. This was one of my favorites back when it was new, yet the luster is wearing away.
Some of the songs were really quite pretty. I loved Skeletons and Soft Shock. I already knew Heads Will Roll was a banger. Overall, a very solid albun.
Started rough with this one, but it got better.Im not seeking it out but wouldnt mind hearing more from this band.
Indie punk disco, yeah?
Good album
female vocalist<3 indie. pop/punk. leather jacket vibes. dance-y. jams. fun. super cool :)
Good
This was fine. Good background music.
I don't think I ever listened to a song by this group before today. I really liked it
Loved this when it first came out but haven’t listened in forever. Still holds up pretty well!
I don't know how I feel about Yeah Yeah Yeahs as a band name. Part of me is stuck on why it's "Yeah Yeah Yeahs" and not "The Yeah Yeah Yeahs" but I'm actually not sure which would make more sense. I don't know. What I do know is how I feel about their 2009 album, It's Blitz! It's pretty good! I liked this one quite a bit. It's my first album that I've gotten from the project this year to come from the 21st century, so that's neat. You don't really see albums from the late 2000s onward come up very much for this project, so it's always interesting to see if the ones that you do get are warranted. This one? While I like it quite a bit, I have heard that the band's 2003 debut, Fever to Tell, is apparently better, so that would probably be the YYYs pick of the list, but I digress. The album itself is definitely on the more modern side, but in a good way. I like the production. It's clean, but not too clean, you know? Karen O's vocal performance is fun. It's always cool to see a female vocalist for more indie-adjacent projects like this. I like the music here. It's got some cool synth stuff mixed with an indie spirit that I appreciate. "Heads Will Roll" is a super cool song, with none of the others disappointing. Overall, I had fun with It's Blitz! It's not a super complex album or anything, but it's a sufficiently fun time that I enjoyed. 4/5.
Yo this surprised me with how much I liked it but never heard of this album. Flow was pretty good, the vocals were great. I can only remember the Yeah Yeah Yeahs for "Maps" but now I have added "Skeletons" to my playlist. Really enjoyed this album to the point where i have listened to it 3 times already ahah
3.5 started really good, kind of dulle after the first three tracks
Pretty cool. I like the variation of songs while still keeping the entire album to a certain "vibe". There was one or two songs I really liked, but this album makes an impression nonetheless.
Pretty good listen. I dare say most people are a fan of this record mainly because of Heads Will Roll (though A-Trak's remix is way better), but there was some gems in this thing the whole way through.
classic album, really enjoy this kind of rock
Wait that's crazy I've already heard a song on this one. Soft Shock is good. I'm gonna like this one it has good vibes. I like the production and the voice. Heads Will Roll is their original song?? That's crazy. I'm really enjoying this album. I like this sound it's millennial but in a good way. Really enjoyed this one. Favourite: Skeletons Least favourite: Runaway
is this public?
Ale "Zero", "Dull Life" i przede wszystkim "Runaway" też mi zapadły w pamięć i sprawiły, że będę wracał do "It's Blitz!"
Love it
I quite liked it but i would give it a 3.5 if i could. Good start but overall quite forgettable
I've only really been familiar with the Yeah Yeah Yeah's due to the hit song "Maps," so I mostly know them as a typical alt-rock band. The band seems to have grown beyond this distinction on It's Blitz! I realized as it was playing that I also know "Heads Will Roll", but it speaks to the Yeah Yeah Yeah's metamorphosis that I didn't recognize them as the artist. There's a lot more electronic elements here than I would have suspected, and the band's willingness to try different styles is refreshing. They do slip into songs that are reminiscent of their past selves, and that's nice too. I will definitely be coming back to this. Not sure how essential it is, but I'm thankful to the author for including it.
This project is right in my wheelhouse. Heads will roll is an all time track for me. Awesome vocals. Great synth. Easy 4.
Great album and awesome live show.
I wish frequently I was as cool as Karen O.
This is a really, really good album with a bunch of excellent songs. There's another review on this site that says it sags a bit in the middle, and I think that's probably true. But, god, Zero is my jam, and Hysteric is a new favorite. 4.5 stars. Karen O is a legend.
The first songs are great. There are some skips honestly
Prior familiarity with the hits which have seen a lot of radio play over the years. Pleasantly surprised how great the entire album sounded. I will be back. 4/5
Let by two strong “banger” openers, then all sorts of lower BPM electro ballads, the album shows growth in the YYYs’ sound while never losing any heart.
It sounds like the soundtrack to a movie.
This was a fun listen. Not a ton to say tbh. Some classic songs and I like the sound overall.
Best Song: Zero This album is pure nostalgia feeling
I didn't expect to like this one, as I was only familiar with the singles from this album - the aggressively happy and dancy electropop of "Heads Will Roll" first and foremost. But side two, especially the drenched out, almost shoegazy "Little Shadow" and the hymnal "Hysteric", caught me by surprise. I really loved the mellower moments here - and that it culminated in the unashamedly upbeat "Faces". 3.5-4 stars.
A coincidence that I roll both listed Yeah Yeah Yeahs albums in a row. I knew Heads Will Roll which is great., and Dull Life was another standout. I like the previous YYYs album a bit more but still enjoyed this about the same level
I really enjoyed this one. I think I've heard of the band, but nothing triggered a memory, so I guess it's new to me. "Heads Will Roll" is a fun tune that i'm adding to the playlist.
Decent album. Zero, Heads Will Roll, Dull Life, and, in particular, Shame And Fortune, are great tracks. Some, like Skeletons, are quite dull. Better than average for this list.
Johan bändillä nimi
1/15 bekannt 8,5/10 Beste Songs: heads will roll, skeletons, dull life anders aber sehr gut
This one is such a funny and enjoyable album. I didn't expect to like it that much, but it truly is such a great album. Some songs are very good, and the first two songs start the album with a lot of energy. I wish the album sounded more like those first two songs, because it has other songs that are not really my cup of tea. But, as an overall, it's a very enjoyable album.
Gostei de Zero, Heads Will Roll, Soft Shock e Runaway
Really enjoyable album. Consistently good all the way through. Zero 4 Heads will roll 4 Soft shock 3 Skeletons 4 Dull life 3 Shame and fortune 2 Runaway 2 Dragon Queen 4 Hysteric 4 Little shadows 2 Faces 3
Karen O doing what she does best. Smooth, confident and magnetic.
i first thought 'this one'? but it is good.
The songs that I know from this album (Zero, Heads Will Roll) are bangers. The rest of the album is good, I was able to listen through without having to skip anything which doesn’t often happen. There weren’t any standout songs other than what I already knew though. (4)
YYY started more garage rock like then took that energy, fused it with dance beats and came up with this great stuff. Amazing fun and energy and a sense of cool.
*Good indie rock album but nothing was so great to make it a 5.
Better than I thought. Have heard a few tracks before and some new ones.
Terrific album to round out the aughts!
Bl.a. LCD Soundsystem var det elektroniske yderpunkt. Yeah Yeah Yeahs lagde sig lidt midt imellem.
The album with "Heads Will Roll". I liked the indie feel and can see why it was Grammy nominated for the alternative category.
I really liked this album. I have heard several Yeah Yeah Yeah albums before, but never listened to this one start to finish. This is definitely one I'd listen to again. It's a great album as far as Yeah Yeah Yeah's are concerned. I'm not 100% sure it's one of the 1001 best albums of all time, but it was a great listen!
I don't know why the YYYs aren't part of my musical diet more, considering I almost always enjoy them when they pop up. While I'm not sure this is among the 1,001 albums you need to hear before you die, it's very solid.
Very good album. Love me some synth pop. And by Americans no less. Surprised this made the list given the UK bias. I like Karen O's vocals. She's not a great singer but her vocals fit with with the material. Heads Will Roll!
I didn't realize that I knew some of these songs!
opening 4 tracks are the best run of their career, and better than most bands entire catalogue. Saw them on the tour for this and had a blast
Very good one. Had a lot of fun
Pretty good album, starting off with some really good tracks and then the rest of the album was decent. They have this unique sound for their time where it's kind of rock, kind of alternative, kind of poppy, and their lead singer is giving me big time Pretenders vibes which is a big compliment in my back (apologies I don't know her name)
Well that was a blast from the past and a half! It transported me right back to the high top tent at Reading festival 2009! Top notch vocals that demand your attention with grungy guitar, heavy but also delicate at times. A BANGER!
Awesome!
🍳
Especially the acoustic versions were nice
I was only vaguely familiar with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs from their first release or two - which were fine to my ears, but nothing I was yearning for. So by the time this would have come out in 2009, I had already made up my mind that it wasn't really for me and didn't pay attention. Well seems like I should have paid attention. I really enjoyed this - much more musical than what my preconceived notions of the band were. The front half is really great - almost 5 territory for me, but I definitely got a little bored in the back half. That said, a really nice discovery thanks to this project.
A fantastic dive into poppier sounds while embracing all of the charm the band has.
Knew way more songs from here than I expected! Fun album to listen to, but started to lose me as it went on.
Actually really enjoyed this one. Only knew one song but the whole album is pretty good.
The two singles still brilliant but let down by the rest of the album
Ganske bra
Such a strong start to this album. First 5 songs are amazing and then the second half just doesnt live up to the beginning. Still an album I love and revisit frequently.
It’s Blitz,” the third studio release by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, stands out as a fantastic entry in the band’s discography. The album cover is striking and memorable, perfectly setting the tone for the music within. This record showcases a compelling blend of electronic and indie rock elements, resulting in a sound that feels both fresh and familiar. From start to finish, every song on the album stands out, making it a consistently engaging listen with no weak moments. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to the band, “It’s Blitz” is sure to impress with its energetic style and creative production.
What a pleasant surprise this album is, it's been a long time! Yeah, I didn't know the band. Yeah, I like the rhythm and some of the melodies. Yeah, I want to listen to other albums by the band. Yeah, I'm really excited about its rating and I'm giving it a 4 out of 5! Yeahs !! ;-)
Great album. Some innovative stuff, some you have already heard but overall they just have their own style which is really nice.
Enjoyable indie/rock/electronic record with a lot of great vocals and instrumentals would listen again
Mid 4 I saw the yeah yeah yeahs at primavera and watched Mia d go absolutely crazy. Good times. This album is perfectly reasonable I enjoyed it
Yeah! That's more like it.
Never listened to this album before, but coming in as a fan of Fever to Tell. I’ve definitely heard “Heads Will Roll” get some airplay, but that’s actually a lesser track for me. I did enjoy its danciness and electro-influence, but I was really into the build-up to the searing guitar on “Zero” and the tenderness of tracks like “Little Shadow.” Definitely gonna return to this one a lot.
It's very hard for me to separate this album from a time in my life where everything took on new meaning. Karen O has such a great voice and this album is full of catchy riffs and lyrics..Zero, Heads Will Roll, Soft Shock...well I was naming songs based on the track list and realized I was about to name every track. I think each song here left my head bobbing and my toes tapping. It's missing that certain something that makes a 5 star album just that...maybe I'm just being careful not to let my nostalgia get the better of me...
Fun rock/indie electronic type album - kind of liked the OG heads will roll better than the remix.
Very good
Fun album that surprised me, not being very familiar with Yeah Yeah Yeahs other than Maps. Interesting evolution.
This is a fantastic example of 2000's NYC indie rock. Great melodies, great production. A very fine record.
Heads will roll e fantastica!
Love this album. Great energy. Great sound.
I've liked YYY for a while now, although I must confess that my introduction to them as a normie was through Rock Band. Listening to this album definitely made me go "ah okay I know this song, didn't realize it was YYY" a couple of times. They're not quite rough around the edges enough here, it feels like they pull back a bit with it. There are some great tracks: Zero and Hysteric stood out to me. I liked the melancholy, but slightly hopeful-sounding end with Little Shadow. A solid listen, much closer to the type of music I usually listen to compared to the first two albums generated for me.
I was very excited for a Yeah Yeah Yeah's album. The songs I normally listen to from them as typically much more upbeat and I think the singer Karen O does a really great job with that sort of breathy sound. However I was surprised by the amount of slower songs on this album, and while I didn't like them all (Skeletons was a miss for me), it did show me another side to a band I like that I didn't even know existed. No hot takes here, my favorite is the ever popular Heads Will Roll. Overall 4/5
Really fun record, no skips and quite a few excellent jams! I really appreciate that Yeah Yeah Yeahs find a way to be in between genres and mix so many elements well and in a way that is always interesting. Best Track: Hysteric
Some major dance classics, I'll always love you twee. Honestly had major personal preference for the acoustic versions
I had only heard the Yeah Yeah Yeah's lauded debut before, so was curious when I saw there was actually a second album chosen for this list. Released in 2009, a scant six years after the debut, this record shows considerable evolution. No longer an angry post-punk guitar band, The Yeah Yeah Yeah's have developed into an electronic indie dance band in the style of Metric (a band I also adore). There is sharp songwriting here - "Zero", "Heads Will Roll", "Dull Life" and the meditative "Skeletons". I loved the original sound of the band, but also love how they've grown and developed on "It's Blitz!"
Still can't decide if I love or merely like it.
This record grows on me every time I listen to it. Not sure if it will ever be my favorite YYYs record but it’s an another solid offering from Karen O and the boys.
Good shit! 4.75
Cool. Like it.
I liked this one a lot more than the other Yeahx3 album on the list. No singular song was better than “Maps” but it was more consistent.
Straight banger!
I heard Heads Will Roll for the first time in ages recently, and was reminded what a banger it is. This album proves the Yeah Yeah Yeahs had more great tunes where that came from.
Love me some Karen O.
Never heard the Yeah Yeah Yeahs before this project, but they have definitely made me a fan.
Never heard of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs until now. Of course, I knew "Heads Will Roll," but I never connected it to them. This album feels like the definition of an 8 out of 10. It’s really good, and I can hear how it influenced some newer artists. I’d listen to it again, just not anytime soon. Solid 8/10. And am I crazy, or does "Skeletons" sound like a Kate Bush track?
Good! Good vibes all round.
Again, know them for a long time. Few songs have somewhat filler-perception but overall it's a great example what indie music should be.
Karen O is everything and I watched her repeatedly smash a corded microphone—just whipping it around and smacking it against the stage—at Red Rocks a week before I moved to New York, with my sister and Gabby and Salma… and I felt 19 again then and I feel 19 again now. Damn that’s how I want to do comedy—just flip out and smash stuff. I love this album! Also this was such a nice reminder that I love the song Runaway
Grooooossartigi Band!
Great album only reason I give it go ur is because I wasn’t able to finish listening
найс
I heard of this group but never listened to them much. I enjoyed listening to this LP.
Like a disco at the end of the world. Dark, moody, spiky electronics and fierce vocals. Heads Will Roll is a classic.
A really great example of dancey guitar music done right. Imo it's better in every sense than most of the indie/dance sound of that time. It sounds a lot more like a band doing their own thing, compared to some. They were one of them bands who managed to cross over from that independent New York DIY scene into the mainstream without losing credibility, and I think this record is a good example of that. I imagine the 'cool' kids with their haircuts and ketamine like this as much as the arty kids. Karen O is cool as fuck too, her later stuff is fantastic and she's done some great collaborations. Does occasionally drift, probably a few songs too many, but on a whole it's a great record
Know heads will roll but otherwise haven't heard this album before. Definitely taking cues from the dance indie acts of the time, I thought it was really good. Still has the older YYY sound at the core but the electronic side of things added to it. Got a feeling this might grow on me even further but from a first listen there was a bit of filler than knocks a star off.
Only know yeah yeah yeahs from their singles, which were fine but didn't really make me want to go seek more out..... Really enjoyed this though. Knew zero and heads will roll, but think the rest was new to me. Soft shock, dull life and runaway were good too. Thought the acoustic tracks at the end were great too. At least 4, I'll be back
I fuck heavily with this.
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are an indie band I just never bothered with too much before. I liked Heads will Roll but didn’t go any deeper into their discography. I think the reason why is that they released their album Mosquito right about the time I was getting into more indie/alt stuff and that album has one of the worst album covers of all time so I basically avoided them entirely. Anyway this album has an ok cover and is actually pretty decent overall
Banger
Good.
Fun album I like the yeah yeah yeahs
This album was definitely a staple of the 2010s indie and dance scene. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs started off with a gritty garage rock sound, but this album shifted toward a more polished, electronic driven dance punk direction. The track that really blew them up beyond indie circles was the A-Trak remix of “Heads Will Roll,” which became a massive club hit. It’s still a fun album to revisit, but because it was such a defining part of its era, it definitely feels locked into that specific time period. That said, it still holds up well as a high point in the dance rock crossover trend of the late 2000s and early 2010s.
Been meaning to get into the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, awesome place to start. Doesn’t feel like it’s aged a day. Does have a couple of lulls on the first listen, but those will probably pass with another. Even then, the highs WELL outweigh the lows.
Heads will roll is the real gem of the album
A really solid album, there’s been some really solid bangers back to back on here. I think this is another one between 4 and 5, im conflicted on where to put it. The tracks are amazing, and I really like the acoustic tracks too. I’m surprised I haven’t heard these back when it came out
Great album, deliciously feisty
Yeah, that's a solid album, no completely duff track and some bangers. Recommended even if it's not life-changing.
I feel like its got a bit of that disco/post punk stuff that was happening around this time, which I quite like, there's a lot of cool synth stuff happening as well, some of the quite lo-fi basslines and stuff are quite unique. Vocalist is also great and I think was inspired by people like PJ Harvey in quite a lot of places, she's got a great and versatile voice as well. There's definitely a lot of variety in here generally, as the start of the album sounds nothing like the end, not sure if that was on purpose but its always cool to hear some development and innovation in pop adjacent albums. The last song sounds exactly like wet leg do now, so they must have completely ripped these guys off. Favourite songs: zero, heads will roll, soft shock, skeletons, shame and fortune, dragon queen, little shadow, faces. Overall around 7/10
Heads Will Roll, Skeletons, Hysteric
this was really good a few standout songs i really liked
Really fun album, absolutely ADORE the synth work on this one
i actually didn’t mind this, there were 2 or 3 songs i didn’t love but the rest of them i enjoyed more than i thought
Will listen again.
Love Karen O her voice is just a melting pot of emotions that drag you in. Like a duvet the band are tight you can hear different emotions coming through some great songs on hear Zero, Skeletons and Heads will roll. I really liked the acoustic versions and how it stripped back to reaveal her voice more.
Yeah
Not bad. Heads will roll is still a favorite.
Dope
yeah i would say i like it so ill say i like it
(The) Yeah Yeah Yeahs adapt graciously with It's Blitz. The band's peak in my opinion will always be with the self titled EP and Fever To Tell. But the general "Pitchfork" historian consensus says that the band's follow-up "Show Your Bones" was a step back. I disagree since I ate that album up during the pandemic, but that's besides the point. Once a band gets big off a distinct image or sound, they must adapt to keep people interested. By their third record, the band decide to lean more towards synth-pop while still relying on some old tricks. The result is something worthwhile, though not every song hits for me. That's alright though, I feel like there's always something ear-grabbing going on. It's a feel-good kick-ass dance-punk record and that's sick. It's Blitz is bliss (8/10, 4/5 on this scale)
Great keyboard work. Great vocals. Good songs. Solid dance album. I'll come back to this one, for certain. 4/5
Unique sound! Lovely album, theres just an emergy that felt like futuristic riot grrl, this is an album that I wish i could return to more and more
starts off very strong, unfortunately looses a lot of momentum by the end. I rate it Yeah Yeah out of Yeah Yeah Yeah.
8/10
Classic 2000's indie band and sound. But one of those bands I never really got into, for one reason or another. It's not bad, it's pretty good, it just doesn't grab me the way similar artists do.
A very fun listen. Some nice, scuzzy rock that doesn't require you to think too hard about it while listening. It is full of energy and rather rambunctious, but it's not overbearing.
Adding it to my collection for sureee
Yeah yeah iconic sound
Really solid indie rock
Ahh 2009, I remember it fondly. I was getting really heavily into grunge music almost two decades past its peak. As a result, I really wasn't paying attention to the music of the day because, as an angsty 15-year-old, I was probably dismissing it as "boring techno crap" (this was before I really got into Nine Inch Nails, New Order etc., so I was naturally a bit naive). So, as a result, I completely missed out on artists such as Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and with 'It's Blitz!', there's plenty to love for my older, more cultured ears here. With Karen O's etherial yet punchy vocals (sitting nicely somewhere in between Debbie Harry and Kate Bush), and some eclectic musical arrangements courtesy of multi-instrumentalist Nick Zinner and drummer Brian Chase, 'It's Blitz!' is a fun album full of raw energy and eletro-punk pizzazz. I dig 'Zero', 'Skeletons', 'Dull Life' and 'Shame and Fortune', although the big hit on this album, 'Heads Will Roll', is a bit mid. But I cannot fault this album's boldness to traverse different styles, especially in the back half. Its an album that gets more and more interesting the deeper you delve into it. There's so much going on throughout this record (fuzzy guitars, shimmering keys, cinematic string arrangements) that I can't help but be impressed by how daring the music gets in places, not to mention the beautiful production by Nick Launay (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Public Image Ltd, The Slits, Killing Joke). 2009 Sam would've hated this album. 2025 Sam quite enjoys it. Big YEAH! to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs!
4.3 stars rounded down.
I never would have guessed that Heads Will Roll was from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I heard the song remixed a ton, especially in bars. I just never made the correlation that it was them. That’s honestly my thought process for this album. After listening the Fever to Tell and thinking it was okay, that was surprisingly an improvement. All the hard punks elements got replaced with some dance-synth and it actually worked for the better. The songs felt more catchy and Karen O’s vocals benefited more here than Fever to Tell. Nice to see the band evolve in a positive way after feeling less than impressed from their efforts before. Favorite track: Zero Other hits: Heads Will Roll, Skeletons, Soft Shock, Little Shadow, Hysteric, Runaway
Good stuff
Very upbeat album. I found it an enjoyable listen
I vote Yeah (Yeah Yeahs)
Super cool, good fun, enjoyable
I really enjoyed this album
A nice background vibe and I never knew where heads will roll came from! 😂 really a 3.5
3,7/5
I liked it a lot
This was an unexpected gem, at least a rhinestone or opal if nothing of greater value. It confounded my expectations after the first two tracks that are solidly British alt-rock of the era (Heads Will Roll and it’s more famous remix are a classic) to then play through to the acoustic set of the last few songs (minus Faces), all in all pretty enjoyable. Maybe a weak 4 as I did dip in and out a bit in the middle, but a step above the average. Would (and will) listen again.
Really enjoyable album. I might be over-excited after a run of mediocre listens, but this caught my attention from the first track. It's high energy, fun. She has a great voice and, although it feels a bit poppy, it has enough rock to get behind. It's interesting that there is no bass guitar, with the basslines being picked up by the keyboard. I think this mixed with the female vocals gave the whole album a light and airy optimism. There is good variety in the album with some dancy tunes like "Heads Will Roll" but also some expansive, soaring tracks like "Skeletons" with ambient backing keyboard. Its a coherent album that sounds great all the way through and it will definitely be getting repeat listens.
Another killer album from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Karen O and company still feel like the one of the coolest bands of the early 2000s. The high schools geeks turned indie stars manage to sound fresh and a little bit darker with the new synths on their third album. The result is one of their best works that's up there with there high energy debut album. "Heads Will Roll" is an easy standout track with "Dull Life" close behind.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs can be counted for a unique album that doesn't sound like their previous material, or at least not their debut, Fever To Tell. The indie/alternative aspect to this album sounds like it's from the aughts, but the synth and punk sound are straight from the eighties. That combination alone makes for a unique listen. Karen O's vocals aren't typical either, and I love how she doesn't sing to be attractive. Super punk. The lyrics are punk rock; they're more on the dark side, but the lyrics and tone have a bounce and lightness that make them fun. 3.5
Another great Yeah Yeah Yeahs inclusion! This album sees the band become a lot more polished, while still maintaining a unique and fun edge. (While the difference between their first and third albums is rather stark, their second album, "Show Your Bones", definitely serves as a midway point between the two sounds in the YYY's career, and is a good listen in and of itself for anyone curious about their sound progression). Wikipedia speaks of this album making heavy, rather incidental use of an "ARP synthesizer" on this album. I won't pretend to be an expert in music equipment, but I will say that this album definitely has a cohesive, almost palpable sound, and I guess this is the reason why. So many of the individual songs on this album are solid, but this sound keeps the album thematic and just set san incredible tone. I feel like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have always bordered on this kind of punky synthy dance-disco sound, but this album is probably the most dialed in occurrence of that sound. In fact, I would go as far as to say that "Heads Will Roll" has become a crown jewel example of that particular sound, often on rotation in some way or another in any alternative-type dance environment. Great songs, great melodies, great vocals; and overall great as an entire album. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs continue their destiny as a unique act, even among the already strange and unique. To borrow a lyric from "Heads Will Roll", their entire musical process is "dripping with alchemy"; from the point of coming together to record an album to the point of completion on unique and vibrant material, their work has a mysteriously magical quality about it.
57/1001 :: Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It’s Blitz Heard before? ✅ Would I revisit? ✅ Rating: 8 Fav Tracks: Head Will Roll, Skeletons, Hysteric Listen before you die: I guess so? So…I really really like this album. I consider myself a YYYs fan. I’ve never seen them live but that’s probably a miss on my part and every time they put out an album I make an effort to listen to it. And frankly for me they rarely miss… All that said, I’m a little surprised this album is on this list and frankly it’s making me reconsider how good it is. Maybe it’s better than I think? And listening to it again I’m getting that feeling. It’s really enjoyable. It’s less abrasive than Fever To Tell (which I really love) but I think that shows the growth of the band. Karen O is such a great singer with such a unique voice and style. Nick Zinner is all around awesome musician and their drummer Brian Chase is quite underrated. The drumming actually has a lot more of a jazz feel than I remember which is cool and compliments Nicks indie instrumentation.
A coherent album that is consistently full of surprises (and which took me by surprise).
nice and upbeat. brightened my day
Pop Rock with disco synth. bring it on! Favorite track: heads will roll other picks: zero, skeletons, dull life, dragon queen
It’s really good and has some catchy songs without being anything outstanding. Still an enjoyable listen though
Haven't listened to this one in a while, apart from hearing the singles every so often on the radio. Looking back now, this album was probably part of the end of the era that was the 2000s indie rock revival, or whatever you call it yourself. It was something of an end of an era for me too, coming out the year I finished secondary school. I was never a huge YYYs fan, but had great respect for them, and thought they seemed like basically the coolest people in the world at the time. Listening back to this now, I forgot just how many fantastic songs are on it. The first 2 are incredible, and the next 3 are pretty great too. Then there is a bit of a lull in the middle before coming back to form with Dragon Queen. Then the last 2 songs tie it all together nicely.
The third best YYYs album. Still pretty good.
Pretty good, it's a band I've not really encountered much but its in my lane for sure. Maybe not a slam dunk, but many interesting sounds. looking at a 4 early on. Something I might actively put on.
So much to unpack with this album. Gave it two listens and it probably needs more. The lyrics alone need study.
Loved it. Tapered off a bit at the end but very fun overall.
heads will roll origin
Pretty good album.
Once I heard Maps I was hooked. They have a cool blend of rock punk, Pat Benatar. Karen O crying for real on the Maps video was awesome. Real emotion thats why I listen to music.
I don't know why the YYYs aren't part of my musical diet more, considering I almost always enjoy them when they pop up. While I'm not sure this is among the 1,001 albums you need to hear before you die, it's very solid.
I really enjoyed this, definitely worth another listen.
The sound of indie sleaze
Karen O. is one of my favorite female vocalists. She’s the voice of indiesleaze. I should probably listen to more of their albums. This shit rocks.
🔥🔥🔥🪩🪩🪩💃💃💃🎸🎸🎸🎸 wow i really liked this a lot 4/5
(4) THIS IS SO SUMMER
I really liked the album. I finally heard the original version of the Heads Will Roll. The whole experience was flowless 4.5/5
Good
Thoroughly enjoyed this
Nice powerful music. Like it.
Forgot how good this album is... Definitely 4.
I gotta be honest, I didn't realize people cared about any of the albums that don't have "Maps". And I don't even like that song, so it's an even bigger shock that I really enjoyed this one!
I'm sick and I really don't wanna listen to this but oh well. Heads Will Roll is great, but I was disappointed with their other album this list made me listen to, so not too excited. Zero is a good start! Already better than Fever to Tell. Especially like the ending. Heads Will Roll is amazing, when of the most fun songs I've ever heard, so yeah, love it. I'm really liking the vocals on this album! Soft shock is good, even if not the best song out there. Skeletons is a slower, more sensitive moment. Almost like a ballad. Like it! Dull Life tricked me, I was not into it at the beginning but when it gets going I love it! The next few tracks don't really do it for me. They're not bad in any way, just not my cup of tea. The closer too. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this album! I was expecting more of that not-so-well-executed punk they did on their debut, but I'm so glad they ditched that sound. So yeah. Despite the fact that the first half is much better than the second, there isn't a bad song here, so I can't be too mad at it. Good experience!
Karen O has a compelling voice. Heads Will Roll is top tier. Loses some of the NY garage punk edge from earlier work, diving more headlong into the house-inspired synth-indie. Definitely sums up a time, but loses place as this sound was fairly widely established by this point (Goldfrapp broke though 4 years earlier). But YYYs still do it well.
This would be a 3.5. Love Karen O and crew and there are a few 5 star songs here, but also a few mediocre ones.
For a synthesiser focused album I enjoyed this more than I would have thought. Great start of the album we with Zero and Heads Will Roll. Also liked Dull Life. The other songs sort of faded to the background of my mind, not unpleasant (except for Dragon Queen) but drifted away a bit.
I liked it
I liked this a lot. They’ve got a good mix of analog and digital sound.
Loved this album. It's synth sound along with Karen's voice really scratch the right itch in my brain. I do wish that Karen would sometimes like... just let out a bold loud note. That would make a song stand out to me a bit.
187/1089 - It's alright! I liked the songs with guitars better than the songs with electronics, especially Dull Life.
Certified banger. Really enjoyed it
This grew on me over a few listens. The synthesizer sound isn’t as immediate as the mote guitar based sound of Fever To Tell which is an all time fave of mine . The singles are obvious bangers but the rest grew on me. And Karen O is great
81% Best: Soft Shock; Dull Life; Dragon Queen Must-Hear? Maybe
Indie disco floor fillers. Love it.
Karen O is preeeetty cool. Pretty nostalgically linked with going out in the early 2010s.
It was a fun album!
Really enjoyed this album - especially the slow burns, like "Skeletons" and "Little Shadow." I had heard the main hits off this album but like the B-sides even more. Love the production and slow builds. Love the singer's voice. Cutting a point because it didn't resonate with me lyrically, and I think it could have been a bit longer of a project with a few more tracks to fully feel complete.
Another album that somehow passed me by during this era. I like the energetic songs more than the slower feel-y ones, but this was excellent.
It’s a good record. Not as good as Fever to Tell. Could of lost this and replaced with Interpol Turn on the Bright Lights.
Lots of fun!
Never listened through an album as I thought they were a one hit wonder Good album and will be checking them out more
nice voice, great acoustic versions of the tracks too.
Alternative rock. I like the slower songs but a good mix.
Didn't realize that "Dance Till You're Dead" beat came from this album. I prefer this version over the dance remixes.
I liked this album a lot when it came out, but I was also a senior in high school with the same amount of self-seriousness that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs had during & after this album. Or maybe I’m just projecting! Haven’t listened in probably a decade or more. I still like this, but I’ve heard better remixes of most these songs since & do blame Karen O for a lot of cringe bad vocalists in the early 2010s.
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeahs
great alternative album, thought it was a 3 at first but my second listen was better so I will give it a 4
Unlike Mr. Brown, this is in my wheelhouse of music. "Maps" was a song I always liked on Rock Band from these guys (on another album). This was good indie listening, although to Scott's point, it definitely has a 2000s dated feel to it. That's just a nice nostalgia blanket for me. Best tracks: "Zero," "Heads Will Roll," "Soft Shock," "Hysteric"
I've always liked this album and am glad to hear the whole thing, not just the hits, again.
First time listening, was only family with “Maps”, overall an enjoyable album.
Loved it
Once again I'm really impressed by the vocalist here. She's utterly perfect for the kind of rambunctious techno-pop-rock they're aiming for. I wasn't sure what to write that didn't mirror my previous Yeah Yeah Yeahs review, but another review here spoke to me: "Electrifying. Karen O is a rock and roll goddess and the band has a blast on this record. Every song is just a ton of fun, very original, and a lot of good grooves too." I'm not sure that I would go quite that far – seeing as the album peaks compositionally at the beginning and never quite recovers – but it's still darn good. The relentless bass synth in Zero starts off the album on an intriguing, dark, yet hopeful note. Heads Will Roll is tailor-made for radio play, which (contrary to popular belief) is completely fine. The vocalist's tone alternates between smooth and almost whispery in the bridges(?) to brashly matter-of-fact in the infectiously catchy choruses, to somewhere between in the verses. The chord progression here isn't anything spectacular, but it gets the job done. Soft Shock is another great song, with a peculiar high synth that sort of acts as a makeshift bassline while the bass itself is more dronelike and immobile. Again the singing is fantastic, working with the instruments flawlessly. At this point in the album, though, all three tracks have had roughly the same mood and tempo as one another, and the listener is looking for some tonal variety. Skeletons, with its thinner texture and relative lack of a solid beat definitely achieves that – but at the cost of being just a little less interesting or memorable. The album is pretty good from then on, though I wasn't "wowed" by anything else. 4/5 Key tracks: Zero, Heads Will Roll, Soft Shock
Hell yeah yeah yeah!
I like indie from this era, so this was a recipe for success. I think the instrumentation holds up. It's not exactly to my taste, but it's a solid album.
Great sound to this record, synth-pop meets indie rock, some great hits with the rest of the album really solid
Incredible album front to back. Another instance where I knew a bunch of singles but never heard it front to back and I'm disappointed I waited this long to do that. A timeless sound from the early indie era, the guitars are loud, the synths are groovy and the drums slick and heavy. Don't even get me started on Karen O's lyrics and vocal performance, mesmerizing, unique with incredibly versatility. If you like any indie, alternative or any kind of dancefloor bangers. Do yourself a favour and listen to this record. Favourite Tracks: Zero, Heads Will Roll, Skeletons, Dull Life, Dragon Queen, Runaway Least Favourite Tracks: Shame and Fortune, Hysteric
Synth-fuelled indie groves and dance-floor beats along with some lovely ballads.
Very contagious energy.
BAO DMS
like a lot of people my experience with Yeah Yeah Yeahs is Maps, so I was a little bummed it wasnt here, but it turned out to be pretty good! Some good vocals and songwriting here, way more synthy than I thought it would be, and it reminds me of a less intense Chvrches. Runaway was pretty good, but the acoustic renditions of some of the tracks at the end of the album probably caught my ear the best, felt more suited to the type of soft, quiet music this is.
