Reviews (page 7 of 11)

Dr. Dre kills it, the raps are pretty good, and there's a couple really killer songs. Only problems here are its length and the repetitive nature of the lyrics

This was a fun album. Haven’t listened to much of snoops old stuff. I love the little radio bits.

It wasn’t bad. Snoop’s voice is very smooth.

Serial Killa finally got me looking into the origin of Suicide it's a Suicide (Moshitup by Just Ice and KRS). I have a soft spot for Doggystyle, it is the first 90's rap album I heard (my cousin came back from cultural exchange in the US with a copy) hated it at the time but it grew on me over time.

Not as bad as I'd feared! Not my thing but listenable.

I liked this album a lot when I was a teenager in the 90s. G-Funk was something different from the scratchy samples and base of the gangster rap floating around at the same time. Has this aged well? Musically, yes. Lyrically, no. I’ve put the album on a few times in the last few years and stopped it as it’s just too much to be listening to in anything but a private space.

Very chill rap album that was easy to consume. Gin and juice is a banger.

As ever with this genre, beats and tunes are excellent, lyrical content is mostly bilge. At least there’s some humour in this, but still too juvenile for me really.

Really enjoyed it. Some great sounds. Lyrically it's often a bit silly

Just kind of annoying Stand-outs - Gin and Juice - Tha Shiznit

Really not a huge fan of the 90s rap I’ve heard here so far, but wasn’t too bad. Lyrics were bad but the beats were really good on some of them. Okay overall. Top Songs: The Shiznit, Lodi Dodi

I like Snoop’s laid way back vibe, I think it may be a one of one. Unfortunately I was rushing a family member to an emergency room (everybody is fine now) and then managing the rest of the family around a bonkers day, and my vibe did not click with this album. So many fine tracks though.

Undeniably great hip-hop. Undeniably cringe lyrics.

Eh, this doesn't strike me as either good or bad.

Ahh, the time of the sketches between songs. Sledi znani "Gin and Juice", k je čist fletn. "Tha Shiznit" je kul. In na tej točki se mi je zazdel, da komad zveni ful west coastovsko - in se spomnim, da je Snoop west coast. "Lodi Dodi" je očitno cover Slick Rick komada, k je famously velikrat coveran & samplan (it sounded familiar!). "Ain't No Fun (If the Homies Can't Have None)" je funky as shit, samo ne poslušat besedil ali guglat backgrounda, pa bo. "Gz and Hustlas" je kul. Pa zadnji, "Pump Pump" isto. Zelo ta old skul vajb poudarjen. (Ok, na konc k mulc rappa je kr amazing, Lil Malik!)

Listened previously. Expectations: High - Verdict: Good - Like the previous Dr. Dre produced album, this grooves pretty hard in places. I quite like Snoop's rapping but sometimes it's not the best and can make me cringe slightly.

Ma tko no

Syns det e ganske mye fett her, men den e jo jævlig klein

Best gfunk (I guess) the cover makes me wanna puke

This is so fucking silly...cringe opening skit, "lyrical murderers", he takes a piss at once point, which means that presumably some studio intern had to find or make a sample of the sound of a bloke pissing?? References to pooper scoopers and "burying his bone in a booty". And that's all in the first 5 minutes or so. However, production's phenomenal, and this is as much a Dre album as a Snoop one, though there's some decent hooks ("rolling down the street, smoking endo, sipping on gin n juice") and straight-up bangers ("For All My Niggaz and Bitches"). Lyrically it's aged terribly. Technically the rapping's not great (but not bad for the time). Overall a mixed bag, but better than I expected, especially after the terrible opening.

Artig og underholdende rap, men neppe noe jeg kommer til å oppsøke igjen.

Ah the rap of misogyny. It's not that I don't like this It's that he's not a technical rapper. His lyrics aren't powerful, they're simplistic over amazing beats. Which is probably what he's aiming for, but without the Dre production quality this would just be 2 stars for me despite the icon he is.

Not heard any of his albums before, was ok

normal

After listening to this album, I am now sure of one thing: it was made by Snoop Dogg, and after enough repetition of saying so across tracks, that is now impossible to forget. I am secondarily assured that Snoop Dogg does, in fact, get bitches. Other than that, I am not positive of any further information.

3.0 - Ok

Never listened to Snoop when I was younger. Good rap album. Hard to believe his image has changed so much.

Some fun songs on here Essential listening for a hip hop fan The lyrics are hella misogynistic though

I thought I would enjoy this one more than I did since I really love The Chronic, an album where half or more of the tracks featured Snoop. This was way more nonsensical than I remembered; the tracks are almost cartoonish in presentation, and the beats aren’t very good. Snoop’s flow is easily the best part of the record. ‘Gin and Juice’ is a certified classic, but the rest of the album was either lacking something or downright bad. Low-end 3/5

Fun but forgettable

Tipper Gore can lick these balls.

good production, questionable lyrics

No esperaba nada realmente y lo disfruté una banda. Cómo rapea el dogg es genial. Fluye el tipazo. Las letras medio una mierda, pero los temas son muy disfrutables. 6/10

Snoop def up there as far as must-hear rappers. Will prob spin again. 3/5

I was determined to hate this. The ghastly cover, the juvenile title, everything. But then I found my head bobbin' along. That damn Dr. Dre at it again.

Ballo, ma si sente che era acerbo

This album is a classic, but in my opinion it has not aged as well as expected from a classic. The beats are all pretty similar to each other. Snoop has a great flow and very good invited artists, but I prefer other rappers from the 90s.

Sounds so different from later snoop I'm more familiar with. Not my favorite rap album but it was alright. Decent changes in beats, and liked the flow. Sometimes it was funny.

3.5, местами хорошо

Sounds fine, won't be listening again though - Saved (0)

I got some nostalgic enjoyment out of this, but it's not something I ever feel like listening to again.

The content is generally dumb and frequently regressive, but it is a different take on hip hop that is very west coast and, well, laid back. There are some things to enjoy besides the songs you've already heard, and since I'm Old Skool, I appreciated the Slick Rick cover. I'm surprised I had never listened to this front to back.

3/5 - Juvenile (to be generous), but genuinely funny in parts. The songs were a good time, and I appreciated the less aggressive style, but, honestly, this isn't getting anywhere near my listening rotation.

Good hip hop listen from the 90s.

Lots of smoothness and coolness on the album, but definitely not my cup of tea.

Vulgar and juvenile, and I have no idea why I actually liked this more than the many many other albums in the same vein. At times it gets a bit too misogynistic, but overall it seems to revel in not being anything other than a party album. Not sure I'd listen to it again, but I didn't hate it.

Aside from the couple of tracks that everybody knows, the only tracks that I knew from the album. The rest of the album was pretty boring, I think I am giving it 3 stars just because its Snoop. Funny I was just watching the 2026 Winter Olympics, and Snoop was there, I am not sure why. But that is Snoop to me today, he is not a rapper, he is just a celebrity, a product.

hip hoppy

90’s Rap ⭐️Murder Was The Case

Too much bitch and ho talk for me. Beats were good and they’d probably be fine if I just listened to one song at a time

Love the personality, the flow, the story telling. Great skits and chill bests. But damn, this thing is nothing but misogyny

This didn’t really stand out to me too much over other hip hop of the time. I don’t mind the dated sound but this just didn’t have as many stand-out tracks on it as I was expecting.

I thought I would hate it but actually it was fun! A lot of lyrics are ridiculous (lick my balls?) though. I can imagine being in the early 90s and listening to this!

A little too long, but it’s alright

Snoop doggy dogg

This is one of those cases where I would have appreciated the album more if I had first heard it 20 years ago (or more). I knew the record's two biggest singles, and enjoyed the beats on a number of the other tracks, but the lyrics kept pulling me out of the experience. I've heard other gangsta rap talk about more interesting things than what felt like the thoughts of a very young artist still unsure of what he should focus on.

It’s like ok but very strange

I mean, I thought the albums were gonna be listed according to their releasing year. Just heard ABBA's Arrival from 76 and jumped into this one. Pretty wild change haha. Fortunately, I also like hip hop. Once again, nice for a 30 year old album. I can see and understand a bit more now why they like and respect snoop so much. Nice bars and redoms.

some funky dunky hippity hoppity music but aside from a few standouts im unlikely to revisit

Its been 30 years since I've listened to this album. My friend was a huge hip hop fan and of course had this and listened to it a lot. I guess my opinion on it hasn't changed too much upon relisten. It's got some great beats, sure, but many of them feel a little too similar to know which track is playing. It's a nice enough listen, and yet it's never compelled me to want to buy it.

It's just a bunch of fun and let's be honest, I'm just a big slut for Dre-produced stuff

Funny that we get this right after a Kanye album. I enjoy listening to gangsta rap for the vibes and good beats, but I'm not gonna pretend most of this isn't just lyrical machismo. That's the whole point, obviously, but I get kinda sick of the grandstanding when I'm actually listening to the lyrics.

I am not the target audience here but the beats were good and Snoop can definitely rap

The music itself is great, but that's all on Dr. Dre. This would be a much better album with someone other than Snoop rapping over it.

6.5/10

I had heard Gin and juice and lodi dodi before. I enjoyed the smooth rap style and overall chill vibes. Snoop has good flow and a unique sound.

What the dawg doin? 3.5/5

Doggystyle left me pretty torn. On one hand, it's a silky smooth, catchy g-funk masterpiece. The music is amazing, the blend of jazz and funk samples with simple yet catchy rhythm is beautiful, and it is well produced to boot. Snoop's rapping sounds good and his flow works well in weaving the music together into a really iconic album. On the other hand, the things he actually raps about are extremely childish. The whole "I'm a gangbanger, look at me I'm the toughest mf" crap is insufferable. Speaking of insufferable lyrics, the album is dripping with misogyny. Nasty stuff. For a teenager in the 90's, Doggystyle was probably the coolest shit ever, but especially now, it's very weak lyrically. Then again, how much should I expect from a early 90's west coast rap album? It's great to listen to while playing Grand Theft Auto, but outside of that, I don't really see myself listening to it much. The music gets a 5, lyrics get a 2, I'll just go ahead and give it a 3 overall. Favorite Song: "Gin and Juice"

The beats are cool. But I can't deal with the amount of recycling Snoop has done with his lines. This won't save the coral reef buddy. You can get new lines.

1/20/26. Fun album, always enjoy Snoop Dogg. The big songs are ones that really stand out, while the rest is solid but maybe a little repetitive.

A lot of profanities

It was fine. 90s rap.

Beats are fun but the lyrics did not age well.

ein bisschen langweilig, jetzt weiß ich wo eminem seine inspo her hat

d o double g oder so, gay, catcht mich nicht wirklich tbh, lyrics sind ja mal so repetitiv omg, war influential ig, aber naja

I really like how Snoop's voice sounds. I have no other comments

No es mi estilo

First Snoop album I’ve listened to all the way through. I’ll do that again.

Still like this older stuff, but the early 80 style is better for me

Hm no. Hm hm. Not really my thing.

3/5 fav songs: G funk intro, Who am i? (whats my name) the songs i liked i really enjoyed, and the whole vibe of the album was very good, though some of the lyrics made me a bit uncomfortable haha.

like its fine...i just think his later stuff is a smidge better. also i cringed a lot at the inappropriate parts

The lyrics are often mindbogglingly juvenile. But Snoop’s voice is likeable, and a couple of songs (“Gin and Juice” and “Who Am I? (What’s My Name?)” really gel. This is probably closer to 2.5 than 3.

Snoop Dogg is a legendary Hip Hop act, though I fear that's largely off his features and this album than anything else he's really done. The lyrics are, of course, pretty unacceptable by today's standards, but for the time they were pretty much what all gangsta rap consisted of. The beats can be downright amazing, but the album sort of trails off towards the end and the more times I've listened to it, the less I seem to enjoy it.

Not my thing

gangster rap isn’t really my thing but decent album

Sexism aside, it was pretty enjoyable

Not my thing, but listened all the way through and it’s good wuality

The production is way more interesting and fun. Don’t love the spoken/acted out parts, but I liked it. Lodi dodi was my favorite

This was a good album. A lot of great songs and the DJ theme throughout tied it together well.

Produced well. Often great beats and catchy. Lyrics lacking. Not a fan of non-music tracks

Made me laugh, Apple’s animated album art made me laugh too.

Some of this is fun but a whole album of it is too much

It is fine.

Infantile, offensive and definitely not aimed at me but I do like quite a lot of the tracks. The production is great and the vibe, though now a bit jaded, would have been quite revolutionary at the time.

Definitely not my taste- I can appreciate it but not my favorite

Its full of obsenity, misogyny, chest puffing and weed use. Its Snoop Dogg, what else would you expect from an album called doggystyle by Snoop Dogg. That being said, the songs are good, its funny and the rhymes are really sharp and observant. Its very much of its time but it has influenced hundreds of hip hop songs and albums so deserves its place at the top table of this genre. I could have done without hearing Snoop Dogg having a pee though.

G-funk is definitely a more tolerable form of rap music, doesn’t feel ans repetitive cause the loops are funky as heck, and snoops monotone is easier on the ears than Chuck D’s because he’s way more chill. Though lyrically this was silly, extremely misogynistic and angry. I do enjoy it more than most rap records

Ok now! 3.5 if I could!

I liked the evey day sounds like. It felt like a day in the life if that makes sense. Like a story.

Too many skit-like intros to songs really slow the momentum here. As a New Yorker, that Biggie rip of Hypnotize on Lodi Dodi is a much-unappreciated shot across the bow. The hits are undeniable. Don't think I'd reach for this again in the future. 3.5/5

Great beats. But all the songs are about his dickandballs

Nice album. Love Snoop and Gin and Juice is a great track.

This album is good and very well-produced, but for me today I can’t really sit down to listen to it. I think that this era of hip hop emphasized too much profanity and superficiality

Not really the music I listen to often. But didn't mind listening to the full disk

It's America's Favorite Uncle but back in the day. The G-Funk/Gangsta sound from Dre and Snoop is what makes this album pop like crazy. Dogg's smoothness and flow are solid at his young age on this. And speaking of young, hoo-boy, I was young once too and these lyrics are definitely juvenile. Have I said all that and worse at that age? Yeah probably so who am I to be a prude about it? But the lyrics are definitely problematic to say the least.

Gin and Juice is superb, wasy to listen to

I really liked this! Super catchy and enjoyable. Just don’t LOVE it ya know and couldn’t get past some of the misogyny.

The vibes are vibing. I am not vibing with the lyrics though. It's fun for cleaning your room and having a beat for it but I don't think I'll go back to it.

Raunchy and crude, but wow, what solid beats. 3.7

First - fantastic beats and flow. I can tell why this would be a favorite for those blazin it up every damn day. Did you know Snoop is a G? Hangs with Dre? Smokes the Chronic everyday? If you didn’t, you’ll find out on every damn track. Was hoping for something more.

I always thought I liked Snoop, but listening to this for the first time in ages I've come to realise it's actually Dre that I enjoy. The production on this is lovely, but Snoop himself sort of leaves me cold.

Is there an artist more prolific than Snoop Dogg? The man just churns out albums and hits to be fair. If he were a boxer he’d be considered a busy fighter and successful if the hits are anything to go by. That said i’ve never listened to an entire album. 3 songs in and i know 2 of them so it must have been a big hit. Does it sound like dr dre because he is the producer or is it the ‘west coast sound’ like blues all sounds like the blues? Does it matter? I guess it’s mainly the words and the flow of the rapper. I dont know. This album didnt grab me. It’s not bad but not 5 stars for me. I think there is a bit of schizo to the styles of songs and rap (not that i am a hip hop expert) and sometimes that can work but it didnt tie together as an album for me. Some bangers for sure. Some meh.

totally get why this is here and i do like it. the hits are hits!

"easy dick and the jack-off hour" Recently (controversially) rated at #100 in Pitchfork's Top 100 Rap Albums of All Time, that low ranking should be understood as an intentional distancing technique to filter oldheads. Doggystyle is definitely good but over the past thirty years, might be the victim of some nostalgic inflation. The tricky thing with Doggystyle is that it's objectively leagues better than anything Snoop Dogg has put out since. It's such a flash in the pan that it makes me doubtful of this one's actual quality once it's finished spinning. But then I listen to it again and it's really good. He's never even come close to matching this one. Dre's (and Daz's, allegedly) production elevates this into something just about revolutionary. Dogg's cool, lazy flow is perfectly suited for what's going on here which is a far cry from the boom-bap stuff that had taken primacy during the era. This is far enough away from Slick Rick that his influence seems clear from the jump, a suspicion confirmed by album highlight - Lodi Dodi. Lodi Dodi alone is about twice as ambitious as anything else in the Dogg discography. A lot of the criticism of this album comes from its transgressions; sexually explicit, misogynistic, violent, cynical, etc. It's not ATCQ, sure, and while I can understand people tiring or not fucking with the aggro juvenilia of it all, I think it's endearing. I won't say anything crazy like "it's grand guignol!!" but I can offer a lot of grace to art that is actively stepping on toes especially when the craft way overmatches the content. I've spent too much time listening to Kool Keith to denigrate Snoop Dogg. The album's called Doggystyle, come on. Favorite Tracks: Gin and Juice, Lodi Dodi, Tha Shiznit, Who Am I (What's My Name)

Couldn’t finish it, but there are definitely some catchy songs here.

Oh my god did rappers from this era get extra brownie points for talking about treating women like shit? Sure the beats are good but hard for me to enjoy music that disrespects my entire gender lol

Old school hip hop that hits right

3.5! Fun awesome groovy album but not necessarily one that I see myself revisiting often. New tracks discovered are "Gz and Hustlas" & "Lodi Dodi", so good

I won’t lie, this kinda went off

good laid back grooves. Nothing too in your face, nothing too groundbreaking, but some real good listening. 3.5

This album is of course a landmark in West Coast hip-hop, however, I can’t ignore the dripping misogyny and lack of depth in its lyrics. The music is super fun as long as you ignore the lyrics.

Great beats, low key style, a surfeit of dog puns

Highlights/: the shiznit gin and juice, and murder was the case. (Hearing spooky gangster rap like that was fantastic Lowlights: did feel like it would get a little repetitive at times with some of the songs

Enjoyed this more than I'd like to admit; the first half is just so funny, and great backings too. After Serial Killer it's much more dull though.

Album #200 was Kanye. Album #201 was Eminem. Album #203 is Snoop Dogg. It was nice to have a little break with the Pet Shop Boys yesterday. I liked a lot of old school hip hop back in the 80's, but was never a fan of gangsta rap or much since then other than the artists who really tried to break molds and do new things. This week has been quite a test for me given this, as it's been a lot of misogyny, homophobia, and violence so far (and it's Thanksgiving week for goodness sake). I recall when this album came out, and I found the cover ridiculous and offensive. I'm pretty certain the only song I'd heard was Gin and Juice and I didn't think much of that either. I tried to keep an open mind today, and at least for a while I was enjoying what I was hearing, aside from the constant MF'ing and N'ing of it all. There was a sense of humor there, and even a wee bit of acknowledgment that this was all for show and not his real lifestyle. But the last few songs were just repetitive and it felt unnecessary other than to fill out a full album (this was also thankfully shorter than many of the other records of that time). Musically it was enjoyable throughout, but if it was an EP and ended with Murder Was The Case I'd have been pretty satisfied. Oh, and with a different cover as well.

Loud music, quiet lyrics

Not my kind of music, but I can see the inspiration from a lot of other songs I do like. Undeniably foundational.

I usually don’t listen to hip-hop at all, but Doggystyle felt different from what I imagined hip-hop would be. I don’t dislike this uniquely laid-back, dope vibe. From 2:44 to 3:05 in “Lodi Dodi,” I can clearly hear the melody of Kyu Sakamoto’s Ue o Muite Arukō (Sukiyaki)—both songs share a sense of sadness in their lyrics, which I find interesting. This really shows Snoop Dogg’s wide musical range, though it’s a bit disappointing that the credits don’t mention it.

Good, but a lot of filler.

Enjoyable gangster rap. Horrendous cover art.

Been a long time since I heard this one; it’s more fun than I remembered, back when gangsta rap had a sense of humor about itself. And bangers galore! Snoop is impossibly boring nowadays, but he made a snappy debut.

As a newcomer to Snoop Dogg, I found "Doggystyle" to be surprisingly accessible. The album's G-funk style, characterized by funky, laid-back grooves and a smoother rap flow, provided a distinctive and low-key introduction. The strong production, featuring excellent sonic hooks and samples, enhanced the relaxed atmosphere and gave the music a welcome Pop sensibility, making it an easier listen than expected. I genuinely enjoyed Snoop's vocal delivery and the album's striking artwork makes a great first impression. However, the album is overly long and frequently interrupted by unnecessary skits. Is there a Hip-Hop/Rap album without skits? Overall, I found "Doggystyle" to be a solid and enjoyable listen, but ultimately Hip-Hop/Rap is not for me and it's not an album I anticipate revisiting. Gin and Juice Who Am I

It's obvs a classic, but I've never liked this record. Dre keeps doing the early rap beats thing with a whiny descending scale — like, 3 or 4 different songs. I respect it as history, but I don't want to listen to it. And as much as I love the conscious era of that Common record, I'm an old dad now and rapping about hoes, blunts and casual assassination is gross. 2 stars plus 1 for Gin and Juice, which Ev and I put into a Flash experience to commemorate the ticking of the clock as we all left home for school.

Never listened to one of his albums fully and there is a reason he became such a big name. It's good but I found the 2nd half of the album to be more hit and miss (they're just constantly referencing Dre). Backing singers are great too. Is he a furry though like the cover implies?

The language is somewhat questionable. The music is really good.

Snoop is a hit maker and "Gin and Juice" and "Who Am I" are all timers. However, an album maker he is not. While the rest of the album isn't bad by any means, the rest of the songs don't pack the same punch as the hits. I'd easily give this album a 3.5/5 if I could but it'll get a 3/5 cause its not good enough to round up to a 4.

6/10 Well the best gangsta rap album I've heard so far. The lyrics are still, by and large, offensive and insane, but the rythmn and bass are great and there is songwriting here.

Snoop Doggy Dogg and Dr. Dre still at the door...

Great original rap album, on brand for Snoop Dogg. Good liste

gin and JEWS

Good album, couple of bangers. Hugely influential for the rap scene but lower score bc he raps about the same stuff. Drugs, women and saying his own name over and over.

Although not all tunes really good, some really vulgar and kinda over-the-top as far as obscenity goes, this is a CLASSIC West Coast rap work, one that started its branch from NYC rap (WuTang, Busta, etc.)... this is the West Coast album that stood up to Biggy and started the "rivalry" -- Gin & Juice is probably one of the most sampled hooks in rap history, Serial Killa a big one too. You can love it, you can hate it, but there's no denying that it is a hands-down, must-listen-to-at-least-once classic for rap culture. The longevity of Snoop is also impressive, and it was this album that started it all for him. The MTV video is worth seeing. Silly and goofy by today's measure, but serious "gangsta" for the time.

Influential for better (banger songs) and worse (normalized sexism and harmful language)

"Snoop Double G" is fun to say. Snoopy-snoop snoop dogg. Snoopy dogg o' double G G doggy dogg. Snoopy doggy dogg o' snoop dogg dogg

I really don't understand the Jack Off Hour, on the station that slaps you across your fat ass with a fat dick. Who is the intended audience? Is it those who are trying to jack off during the Jack Off Hour? Is it those with a fat ass looking to get slapped with a fat dick?? Are the men supposed to tune in during the Jack Off Hour or is it a block reserved specifically for the "hoes" and "bitches" Nate Dogg and Kurupt are about to rap to? I find the mixed messaging from DJ EZ Dick challenging to parse to say the least. Anyways, some cool tracks and classic to be found here. Never been a huge fan of the OG west coast rap sound but some beats are unforgettable (Gz and Hustlas, Who Am I, Murder Was The Case). I honestly think it's an abundance issue given how many people copied and emulated the sound for the rest of my childhood. I always prefer the vocals from Warren G, Nate Dogg, and a couple others on this album over Snoop -- but he brought 'em together!

another album i've never heard the whole way through! here we go - lmao the spoken intro is a whole audio story - raunchy as i expected - THE WBALLS RADIO AD iconic - yup this is snoop dogg - "what do you want to be when you grow up" "a motherfuckin hustler" lmao - really like the little dialogue bits - feels like an anticlimactic end to a pretty wild album totally get why snoop got the following he did. i finally feel like a real stoner

Carol Anne enjoyed it more than me lol but it was good and lots of interesting beats and melodies. Higher than 3 but not a 4

I don't really like Snoop as a person, and I think a lot of this album isn't for me... But there's no doubt it made me bop and bounce along with it.

immature or playful? difficult to say - but is fun.

Snoopy likes to drop N-bombs quite frequently.

Love Snoop. Love the effortless chill flow and authenticity. Love what he became. Love a few songs on here - but a lotta fluff in between sucks.

Standouts G Funk Intro Gin and Juice Who Am I? (What's My Name) Gz and Hustlas

This is such a classic album and this is why Snoop is who he is.

dre is the star of the show. snoop isnt all that

All time classic

I like the West Coast low key grooves and Snoop is a fun rapper to listen to, with that super easy going loose bounce and witty turns (he must have worked hard to make it seem that easy), but sometimes there's more to life than weed songs and g-life songs.

G funk intro Tha Shiznit Gz and Hustlas

Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Rap will never be my thing, but this pretty chill. Smooth flow, fun beats. Lyrics are a bit....eh.

This came out when I was in middle school and it was a huge album. Has it aged well? Yes and no. Production is top notch, but the album is plagued by dumb skits and misogynistic lyrics. Still a classic but not perfect.

I already know Mike's review.. ok so Snoop for me has always been a guilty pleasure, I love the guy! Early stuff disparaging or insulting women OF COURSE NO, but that BS was 30yrs ago - the music and the beat.. and Dr Dre.. and Warren G etc etc YESSS sign me up I am a huge fan of all of their stuff, but it's not a 4-5 but a 3-4 while staying true to my east coast hiphop peeps like De La & TRIBE - they get 5s for everything they do/did

This is hard. I love Snoop and the sound of this album, but the misogyny…ugh. I struggled with the score. 2.5.

To be honest, this record has a lot to offer. The rhymes are witty. The samples are used brilliantly, and there actually isn't that much filler.I mean, sure, there's a few seconds at the end or beginning of some songs. But there's no, you know, one.And a half minute skit tracks and s*** like that. This album is seen as legendary.I would have never put it in the legendary category. However, it does as it deserve some attention

Altså det swinger jo. og der er nogle bangers. Men der er langt imellem, og de lange mellemrum er fyldt med weird skits, bitches and hoes og en måske lidt for kærlig tilgang til de misogyne sider af tilværelsen som Gangsta.

Eh, not something I enjoyed the most, but it's not terrible. low 3/5

This was sorta fun 30 years ago. Now it’s mostly just sorta sad.

Laid back, all time classic hip-hop album with brilliant (best?) production from Dr. Dre, great rhymes and delivery. "The album really introduces us to the laid back vibe of the Snoop persona. Very chill. Yes, it's gansta rap with the lyrics but the funk and Snoop make this more chill."

Dre is undeniable. As previously (over)stated, I don't pay much mind to lyrics so the misogyny* doesn't bother me like so many reviewers on this site. Snoop's flow is nice. First time hearing most of these songs. Pretty into it all but nothing blew me away not even the singles I had previously heard. *Is it really that bad? Asking honestly cuz I didn't follow much of the narrative but just feels like party music and there's nothing wrong with that, a lot of rock and roll is deeply misogynistic it's not only rap.

It's crazy that this is Snoop's peak album, and yet somehow he's gotten by on sheer personality for the past 30 years. A legend of the ol long beach scamazz.

Snoop D-O-DOUBLE G from THE LBC biatch. The singles are great, I can understand why it's a classic. Not every song does it for me and I feel that it drags to the end. It is truly G funk, but that's about it for me. My respect goes to the Dogg Pound (7/10, 3/5 on this scale)

6.5/10

This just grooves the whole way. Def an album to put on when ur chillin, doing chores and whatnot. It just makes the time fly by.

Pretty good stuff. I really liked the beats and Snoop's relaxed style. Funny dude

Sippin on jin and juice! My first Snoop album from start to finish. I like his pacing and clarity with his voice. Those are some tight beats. West coast!

Undeniably great flow & great rhymes. But I don’t really need to hear about your private sex life unedited. And I definitely don’t need to hear constant denigration of women. I’m not a puritan — there’s a place for it all; but if you can’t relate to women any other way for a whole album, you might have a problem. Definitely worth listening and definitely influential. But only a 3 for me.

Snoop is a beloved figure and this album kind of shows why. I’m not sure what the skits achieve. But the flow flows.

Misogynistic

who am i was perfectly good, but nothing else was anything special.

I wasn’t really feeling it. It’s got some jams but a lot of it felt like repeats from other songs.

4 but -1 because snoop has become very annoying

It's a classic and I remember it's impact in real time. I also remember it being skit-heavy and sort of beyond belief.

People love Snoop, and his sound is so effortless and cool, the Dre beats are sly and slinky. But the record itself leaves me feeling unfulfilled. This is not Tupac or Biggie skill.

Not bad, some great guests on this. 3.5 rounded down. Heard before? The singles Owned: No. 8/1001, 8/36 (22%) Will I get? no

Snoop's debut. Early 90s. West coast rap produced by Dre. One of the most influential hip hop albums. Loads of chatter sets the scene. Old school hip hop. Snoop has great flow, nice beats.

Entertaining with some good tunes, although quite crass.

Is Snoop Dogg an amazing rapper? Absolutely. Is he a sell-out? Also absolutely. Both things can be true, and holding them in tension actually highlights why Doggystyle lands the way it does nowadays. Set aside the modern persona—the memes, the corporate partnerships, "Snoop Lion" the family friendly rapper, the “Uncle Snoop” cultural ubiquity—and go back to 1993. Doggystyle was a singular force. Snoop arrives fully formed: effortless cadence, rubber-band flow, a conversational cool that no one before him had captured at scale. He doesn’t sound like he’s rapping; he sounds like he’s gliding. And Dre builds the runway for him—G-funk stretched to its most luxurious, sinister, and cinematic form. Lyrically? It’s misogynistic, violent, and unapologetically immersed in the world that shaped him. That tension of a slick delivery over grim reality is the album’s architecture. It’s not moralizing and it’s not romanticizing; it’s reporting filtered through swagger and wordplay. Snoop uses poetry the way a street raconteur uses storytelling: to turn survival into mythology. Doggystyle is foundational gangsta rap, a debut that feels like a greatest-hits reel, a moment when talent, production, and cultural timing snapped perfectly into place. Whatever Snoop became later, this record is the document of an artist operating at raw peak power. That hasn't aged well.

some of this album bangs, some of it is about balls…. who’s to say what’s more important

A great album! No wonder it was groundbreaking. Too much s3x & dru9u5, but no RockN'Roll.

Good flow and it makes sense to be on the list but it's not a masterpiece. I never realized how deep he went on the bit of being a dog.

His star power comes through. Great sound and flow. The lyrics don't do much for me. His voice is getting a little stepped on. Could be the source. Gin and Juice is a very catchy track and enjoyed the nod to Slick Rick with Lodi Dodi. Could drop a couple tracks for a tighter album.

Certainly his own flow and sound and definitely some humor. Storytelling approach to the songs is interesting. But the stories themselves and the general topics are meh.

I have so many memories of hearing the big hits off of this album while I was growing up in the Bronx. Snoop’s flow is one of a kind and the George Clinton infused samples are an inspired choice. That said, the amount of misogyny on this album is incredibly disconcerting and honestly Snoop’s storytelling is a bit dull and uninteresting at times. His vocal delivery and word play (and don’t forget the g-funk production) is what saves this record for me.

Misogynistic raps with a very smooth delivery.

I've heard a bunch of these songs on the radio. This is a great album, but it is VERY explicit. I really like the album, but really can't listen to it. Spotify doesn't have a clean version of the album, even though one supposedly exists. Pitchfork: n/a Rolling Stone: Top 500 Albums #340 (2023) Best Songs Gin and Juice Tha Shiznit Murder Was The Case Who Am I (What's My Name)?

Listened to before: Yes Sometimes it is difficult to put personal taste into a rating. There are albums with obvious weaknesses. There are albums that are well made and which I respect, but they are not my cup of tea. And there are albums like Doggystyle, which are well made, which I respect and which should be my cup of tea. But just aren't. And I don't know why. The production here is magnificent and Snoop is a fantastic performer (although I could go without the misogyny). It just does not click fully. Rating: Thrizzle point fizzle stars

very fun!

really liked the production on this album. unfortunately it was a little hit or miss for me: some of the tracks were great, while others... well, they were there. beyond the catchy beats, can't say i'm a huge fan of the tasteless lyrics, which MAYBE could be excusable if you aren't really listening and just have this playing in the background, though i had to pause and double check what i'd just heard several times on my listen through. oof! 😬 highlights - murder was the case, who am i (what's my name?), pump pump

Mostly solid production and rapping, but not totally my thing. 3 stars

I prefer this slightly to The Chronic. I think Dr. Dre refines his G-Funk sound a little, the rapping is way better, and Snoop does a good job of lightening the mood. There's still a good deal of unevenness here, and the skits are pretty bad, but there's some really good highs here including "Gin & Juice", "The Shiznit", "Murder Was the Case", "Who Am I?", and "Pump Pump". 3.5 stars.

Good listen. Great '90s west coast production. Solid flow, actually pretty innovative for the era when I think about it.

Good record when it came out, but it’s hard to overlook Snoop’s recent hypocrisy and homophobia. Weird, because he was happy once upon a time to cash checks for appearing on “The L Word.” It’s disappointing to find out that he’s actually just a sellout.

Snoop's delivery is velvety smooth and Dre's production is slick but it doesn't really press my buttons. Sadly I prefer the C&W parody of Gin & Juice....

I’m torn. I love the music but don’t love the lyrics. Like I love the track Gs and Hustlas for the music but the tracks For All My Niggaz & Bitches and Ain’t No Fun make me cringe hearing the lyrics. The singles are still fun to hear and I also enjoyed Serial Killa.

Hard to go back to this one, a lot of it sounds embarassing as hell these days. The production is killer though. Snoop has always worked better for me when he’s doing a verse on someone else’s track; I like his lazy flow, but a whole album of it is a bit much.

Not a rap fan but becoming a Snoop Dogg fan.

Say what you will about Snoop but the man is an artist. Great album. Even if he's a fucking sellout.

I hear how classic it is, I just don't like it enough, Yet I find interesting how we can hear major hits like the Chronic piercing through

Picture the scene: Six white boys crammed into an open top Jeep, rambling through the gated communities of Savannah, Georgia, drinking forties, high as fuck, blasting this album and throwing firecrackers at golfers and other preps. We were so stupid. It was glorious. Fuck Snoop for being a MAGA sellout bitch but this record rules.

FUCK YEAH ! ! (Does anybody else remember when Snoop Dogg was Snoop Lion lmfao). If there’s an album in Snoop’s catalogue that has withstood the test of time, though, it’s his 1993 debut, Doggystyle, the yin to the yang of Death Row labelmate Dr. Dre’s The Chronic (also a slay). One thing that’s also made almost immediately clear on Doggystyle is how elastic Snoop’s flow is, where he easily sells the album’s often jarring tonal shifts by subtly modifying the rhythm of his delivery or hardening his cadence slightly. Take the three-track run from “Gin and Juice,” a party jam with some of the deepest electric bass and slickest portamentos to ever grace a ’90s hip-hop cut, to the horrorcore anthem “Murder Was the Case,” with the hyper-surreal “Lodi Dodi,” a sexually charged remake of a Slick Rick song with some piping high-pitched keys thrown in for good measure, sandwiched in between. Any other rapper would seem out of their element attempting all three of these disparate styles, but Snoop, who impressively freestyles through nearly the entire album, sells all of them and sounds totally unbothered while doing so. (Sidebar, anybody that doesn't like this album art is big fat fucking wrong it's iconic). Snoop finishes up the album in a particularly strong fashion. “Gz and Hustlas” is an off-the-cuff track in the vein of “Tha Shiznit.” During an interview with MTV, Snoop insisted that the song was completely freestyle, and if that’s the case, then I sure wasn’t able to tell. Overall, Snoop has lived up to the potential he showed on Doggystyle. Though he’s matured in some ways, in others he’s still the tall, lanky emcee that oozes cool confidence, equally able to kick a fierce rhyme, pull your girl, or lay back and puff some good weed. It’s no easy feat to have millions of hip-hop fans expect an artist to deliver something truly special, but Snoop rose to the challenge and made himself a legend in the process, Huge god damn slay. - 4/5 HF xoxo No shit my coworker was telling me to listen to this album yesterday, what are the chances. Never really listened to Snoops music tbh, least of all his debut, so I'm excited for this. Opening track sounds like a proper introduction not just to the feel of the album but the snoop as an artist. The album properly starts with G Funk intro and doesn't disappoint, the beat is tight, lot of funky samples, great starter. Gin and Juice is probably the only track I'm familiar with, takes me back to college house parties and getting so stoned I go non verbal. It's the Snoop Dogg formula done to perfection, Solid flow, fun lyrics and a chorus that will be in your head for weeks. I was honestly surprised at the variety of sounds you get from this album, organs, wind instruments and a straight up soul choir in the Shiznit and Who Am I. Overall what a debut album and I'm slightly ashamed I hadn't given it a full listen until now, I'm not massively into rap but would happily give this another listen. 3/5 MTW

Some decent stuff on here. Not sure about the album art. Probably won't be seeking this out again.

I shouldn't like this, and yet. 3 stars is counting a penalty for misogyny.

not quite as impactfull as dr. dres the chronic, but still solid.

A G-funk landmark with smooth production and laid-back charisma. Dr. Dre’s instrumentals are rich, funky, and meticulously crafted — perfectly suited to Snoop Dogg’s relaxed delivery, which often sounds like someone lighting up and drifting through stories with effortless cool. It’s a defining trait of G-funk and gives the album its unmistakable vibe. That said, the lyrics don’t always hold up — often juvenile, occasionally grating, and not particularly deep. For someone who doesn’t live and breathe hip-hop, it’s a solid listen and culturally important, but not essential on repeat.

É a última coisa que me importo. 3.5/5

Really funny, classic snoop. Listened to while driving home from work

Foul language aside (and there is a lot) this is a very funny record. What's my name is an all time great rap song and gin and juice is singable (if alone ha). Artwork adds to the album. Bits of it are dated but most records released in 93 are now sadly. Enjoyable from beginning to the potty mouthed end

Great production but got a bit tired of the interludes and skits and also a bit long.

Snoop Dogg’s best work. An album from my younger days. Great fun.

A classic and one of the only gansta rap albums worth listening to. Snoop's flow is so smooth. That said, the back half of the album isn't nearly as strong as the front. Not something I listen to all the time, but I'm down with some Gin and Juice or Who Am I? every so often.

I listened to Gin and Juice a lot as a teenager. The hook is fantastic but I'm not as warm on the rest of the song these days. Which is kinda how I feel about the entire album; it has a teenager/early 20s vibe that is harder to relate to nowadays.

This fascinates me, how he can go from this album to motivational songs for kids. Because of that I found myself laughing at the dialogue of this album. It was absurd.

⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. It’s funny bc I just listened to Ice Cube which was only a year before…but this sounds so much more modern - I think a testament to how much Dr. Dre really shaped modern hip hop music. Some great classics on here!

Love some Snoop Dogg. I have never heard this album before, but I was familiar with some songs, and the obvious classic of Gin and Juice.

I see the appeal. It’s smooth, beats are good. It’s not my genre

That was goofy as hell. While I can't deny the dude is an amazing rapper, I got a little tired of him constantly mentioning gin in every track. I get it, you like (Tanqueray) gin and juice. That said, I thought it was a lot of fun and I thoroughly enjoyed "Murder was the Case" and "Who am I." One complaint is the album's art. Extremely amateurish. 3.5/5.

3/5 definitely good and foundational to stuff afterwards but i never want to listen to the album in full ever again.

I like Snoop Dogg and this was a good listen on a warm sunny summer day but nothing saved to my playlist

I’ve never listened to a full Snoop Dogg album before. Had no idea he was that connected with Dre either. The whole G-Funk thing is a really cool sound, I could possibly enjoy this in small doses and in a different setting. But certainly not great for work at 6 AM.

Not my thing, but enjoyed more than I expected.

Really catchy productions and it put me in a good mood. On the other hand the lyrics are cringeworthy misogynistic. It’s both a 5 and a 1 at the same time.

Great tunes and beats, the melodies of the raps/singing are good, but the lyrics! The lyrics are so puerile almost laughably infantile at times. Hos, bitches, niggas and an unhealthy dick obsession! Wow!

The rap albums on this list have been pretty hit or miss for me, so I'm always a bit wary whenever one is generated. As Snoop Dogg has remained a pop culture figure for four decades now I'm fully aware of his trademark style. However most of his more memorable appearances throughout the years have been as features on other people's projects. I haven't heard great things about his solo stuff, but I'm hoping to be surprised. Also this album cover is awful. Bathtub Forgettable skit. As the tradition entails, the skits of this era have not aged well, not as a concept and not in execution. Kinda adds nothing. Dislike. 2/5 G Funk Intro Fun intro. Funky beat. Decent verses. Snoops brief apperance is fairly memorable. Love the synths over the final verse. Fine. 3/5 Gin and Juice An absolute classic song of the era. The synth in the background is iconic. The opening line is extremely memorable. Fantastic hook. A bit dumb, but Snoop delivers a smooth and likable performance. Great. 4.5/5 Tha Shiznit Annoying skit. Terrible opening. Stylish beat, love the flute sample. Infectious synth. Can't say Snoop is a great lyricist, but he sure can deliver his bars in a fun way. A little bit predictable. Carried by the production and the flow. Decent. 3.5/5 Lodi Dodi This sluggish and dreary beat does not fit Snoop's rapping style at all. The sample isn't exactly great either. Unlikable performance. Interesting vocal feature. So many odd choices, especially lyrically. Ends up just sounding a bit all over the place. Dislike. 2/5 Murder Was The Case I like the dark and ominous atmosphere of the song. The lyrics are fairly evocative for its themes. Great hook. Decent. 3.5/5 Serial Killa Agressive delivery. I like the beat quite a bit, has a solid groove to it. The features are fine, but Snoop himself is definitely the highlight. His verse is pretty memorable as his flow really works on the beat. Kinda terrible hook. Fine. 3/5 Who Am I (What's My Name)? Classic. Interesing vocoder section. Fantastic hook. Fun beat. The verses aren't exactly that memorable. I like the subtle flute sample. Fun song overall. Great. 4.5/5 For All My N****z & Bitches Fun hook. Solid features. Don't love the beat on this one. Feels a bit basic. Goes on for too long. Overall kinda forgetable. Average. 2.5/5 Ain't No Fun (If My Homies Can't Have Any) Bad skit. Fantastic opening verse. Great funky beat. The lyrics are kinda shit, but it's a bit of a vibe none the less. Awesome hook. Great beat. I don't endorse the lyrical content, but holy hell this song is still fun as hell, Nate Dogg and Warren G just kills it. Good. 4/5 Doggy Dogg World Another unfunny, poorly aged skit. Okay beat. Decent delivery. Enjoyable hook. The feature livens up the atmosphere quite a lot. Love the repeating of the hook at the end, the more vocal focused ending really makes the song. Decent. 3.5/5 Gz and Hustlas Okay skit. Great sample for the beat, really catchy. Solid verses. Boring hook. The G-funk synth kinda gets old after a while. Average. 2.5/5 Pump Pump Bouncy beat. Love the bass sample. Bad hook, sounds weak and irritating. Doesn't really have much interesting going for it. Ends up being a bit boring. Average. 2.5/5 Has its good moments, and has its bad moments. Lyrically it hasn't aged well. Even on the better songs on here there's a lot of misogyny which is a bit of a relic of the era. The hooks are pretty great throughout, with awesome samples and great guest performers that shake up the sound a lot. Snoop delivers some really fun performances, where his flows really enhance and add an unpredictable element to the experience. Again he shows why Snoop and Dre remain an iconic pairing, as Dre's production generally works really well with Snoop's style. Overall as a classic G-funk record this has most of what you're looking for, so if you want a bit of a throwback this is perfect. Unfortunately some of the more intrinsic features of the genre haven't aged well. This includes the lyrical contents, but also the horribly unfunny skits that honestly just waste your time. It's fine for what it is, and has its memorable moments, but it's not something I'd put on all too often. 3/5

Snoop has flow and the beats are solid which isn't surprising considering it is G-Funk and Dre was involved in the recording. The lyrics are dated and the skits are meh. Overall, it's fine but not as essential as many make it out to be.

Doggystyle is definitely one of those hip hop albums which has some really good instrumentals and production but some not so good lyrics. I guess the only song i was familiar with before listening to this album was Gin And Juice but it wasn't really the song that i recognized but more so the title since there is an actual drink with that name (with Snoop's name and all) that is sold at the grocery store i work at. I do enjoy all the different instruments and samples in all the beats which is easily what i enjoyed most about this album but a lot of the lyrics did feel overly juvenile and kinda annoying. I did enjoy this album a solid bit but the lyrics did hold it back for me. Best Song: Gz and Hustlas Worst Song: Lodi Dodi

Great music, lyrics are sketchy, haven't aged well. Or maybe weren't appropriate ever? But I will listen to this one again.

It's a pretty good album. Some of the themes and language haven't really stood up to the test of time but the beats are good and Snoop's voice and flow is basically unmatched.

G funk classic that is just so smooth to listen to. Not present across the whole album but Snoop also does some great storytelling on some of the songs, and his flow is so mellow. Some of the most iconic beats and samples to exist in this era of hip-hop. Fave Songs: G Funk Intro; Gin and Juice; Murder Was The Case; Serial Killa; Who Am I (What's My Name?); Aint No Fun (If The Homies Can't Have None); Doggy Dogg World; Pump Pump Worst Song: Tha Shiznit

Not really my thing, but some good tunes. Some times a little too much with the language used.

The sound aged well, the content less so

gin and juice i miss gin and juice

This is one of those albums that I’ve always known I *should* listen to, but never quite got around to. This was a little before my time, plus I was east coast biased when I started getting into hiphop in the late 90’s. Obviously I’ve heard many of these songs over the years, but it’s fun to finally catch-up on the full album… even if the lyrics (and Snoop's politics) might be divisive today. It holds up better if you don’t listen too closely and just surf the vibes.

I didn’t like this nearly as much as Chronic when I was younger, and that hasn’t changed. The beats and flows were solid, but Snoop was just amping up the misogyny and really dumb drug references like it was an aspirational identity. On top of that, most of the lyrics are just dumb. I feel like I’m being too hard on it, but I will say again that the rhythms and production are great.

this is just a very full album if that makes sense, lots of layers and noises and different things to focus on also i've never really listened to that much snoop dogg it's interesting to hear

Felt like way too many bits of shtick/skits given how many average tracks were on here

There's like 4 good songs on this thing and he's lucky they're phenomenal tracks. The rest just feels like filler 7/10

Ignoring the usual misogyny, this was far more enjoyable as gangsta rap goes. Granted in hindsight it just reminded me of GTA San Andreas but plenty to enjoy here both in the music and in some of the fun in the lyrics.

This is alright, some fun beats and snoop has a nice "flow", plus he's quite funny. But man is it repetitive. Every song must contain: 12 n-words; 8 words insulting to women; 5 times mentioning his own name in case you'd forgotten what you were listening to; at least one reference to Dr Dre and 17 dubious puns on the fact he has the word dog in his moniker. (My favourite being (knick knack paddy whack"). Shakespeare eat your heart out.

A cool snapshot in time. Only really know snoop since he became a huge name and more of a feature. Some pretty dodgy tracks mixed in though.

Not my style of music, but late high school/early college memories with this album. Also like the beat/musicality of the rapping.

funky as hell but the rap aint nothing to write home about

A crucial album as the West Coast sound took over the '90s. Snoop has endless charisma as an MC, even if his rhymes aren't intricate. Dr. Dre's synthesizer and beats heralded a new era. Unfortunately, this also meant the end of what we now call the Golden Age of hip-hop. Several aspects of this new era were corrosive. The glorification of misogyny, gang violence, sexual violence, and self-aggrandizing took the place of introspection, political awareness, spirituality, or community solidarity. As much as I enjoyed this album in its time, I resent it now for its harmful impact on hip-hop and the broader culture.

Man... I wanted this on April 20th... That would've been the funniest coincidence in the history of the 1001 albums project. Damn. Anyways, let's talk about Doggystyle... the album, that is. This is definitely an album with a solid case for inclusion on a list like this. For one, Snoop Dogg is undeniably a legend of hip-hop history. Sure, he may be a bit of a sell-out who will do literally anything for money, but his music still has a solid legacy, with this album has the strongest of any in his discography. Additionally, alongside Dr. Dre's The Chronic one year prior, this album helped pioneer the G-Funk scene of West Coast hip-hop, which has proven to still be influential even in the current days of the genre. I guess one could argue that The Chronic's inclusion makes Doggystyle a bit of a redundant pick, but I wouldn't really say that myself. Alright, let's talk about the album itself now. I think it's good. It's not my favorite, but I see the appeal. I'll start with my big sources of praise. Dr. Dre's production is outstanding. It's just great. I don't have much to say. It just feels cool. Snoop's rapping is solid. He's definitely a unique character within the genre, and his rapping demonstrates that. There's some pretty good songs on here, with the singles like "Gin and Juice" and "Who Am I (What's My Name)?" being strong highlights. However, I have problems with the album, mostly in the writing department. Yeah, not only are this album's lyrics kind of repetitive, but they also haven't aged the best. There's only so many times you can hear the word "biatch" before you question what you're doing with your life. I get that it reflects the culture of the time and it does do a good job of doing that, but it's still kind of problematic. Still, the good elements of this album do make it a worthwhile listen in 2025, mostly as a piece of music history. Also, the skits aren't my favorite, but they're not Ready to Die levels of bad for me. I guess Ready to Die is probably the closest comparison I could make for this album. Not so much in the sound, but in the lyrical issues and cultural impact. So, I'll give this album a similar score, which is, of course, a Thrizzle/Fizzle. I'm sorry. High 3/5.

Några riktiga klassiker men resten av albumet inte lika kul att lyssna på.

I thought for sure I reviewed a Snoop Dogg album already. Must have been something he was featured on, I guess. Anyway, as entertaining as this album can be sometimes, it can also be incredibly cringe. I'm thinking Lodi Dodi and Ain't No Fun. I do appreciate that this doesn't take itself too seriously attempting to be intellectual/political, but I won't be listening to it again. Best track: Who Am I (What's My Name)?

I bet hip-hop fans eat this up. Personally, I don't. Not bad though for the genre.

Snoop's rapping is just really pleasant to listen to. His flow is easy to listen to and follow along with. I'm not really sure that I love the content of most of this album, but, musically, the album does kick ass. As a debut album, it's really good. Besides Snoop's personal style, it doesn't do anything that feels world changing. The West Coast hip-hop style was apparently still pretty new, though, I guess. It's good! And I really enjoyed it, but I'm not sure if I would call it great. Favorite Song(s): Gin and Juice, Lodi Dodi

sounds exactly like the 90s but it's kind of monotonous over the course of an hour

A lot of beats that became classic

I liked the riff on Gz and Hustlas. I did not like the constant animal-based innuendos. Furries must love this album

Didn't listen intently, didn't feel I missed much.

Better than expected

I'm with Dionne Warwick about the misogyny in 90s rap lyrics. And Snoop to this day doesn't seem particularly apologetic about it. Still, the sound of this album is impeccable. Three stars. Could've been five without all the "bitches" and objectification.

I really dig the instrumentals on this album, but it does get very repetitive lyrically and vocally after a while.

First five songs i really enjoyed, but i got a little bored around the time of 'murder was the case' and looked forward to the ending of the album. The album got somewhat of comeback on 'Gz and hustlas' but it got homogenous after 1 minute

I honestly thought I would enjoy this album more than I did. I enjoyed the hit songs, but the rest was kind of lost on me. Too much extra stuff; I've never been a fan of skits on rap/hip-hop albums unless executed greatly. Snoop doggy dog didn't pull off the execution.

I'm no shrink, but I think Snoop Dogg has some sort of complex. The skits are all mega cringe about how cool and hot he is. The beats are cool I guess but they get old and the lyrics aren't especially witty or interesting. Gin and Juice if the clear standout but I've heard it so many times that the magic is lost. there's no chance you could forget what artist you're listening to because he said it's name like a million times by the end. Very similar experience to the Biggie album.

Before beginning this album, my assumption was that Doggystyle was going to be very dated in regard to women. I learned: 1) my assumption was correct, 2) this album created, or at least encouraged, the cultural connection of Snoop Dogg with weed, and 3) “Hypnotize” by Notorious B.I.G. samples “La Di Da Di,” which Snoop covered as “Lodi Dodi.” Despite the rampant misogyny, Doggystyle was fresh, even to my ears in 2025. Snoop and Dr. Dre created an album with good hooks and catchy beats. I wasn’t bored, though there was some cringe happening.

I knew a fair few songs off of this album, but don't believe I had ever heard the entire album. But having now heard it, all I can say is this is a STRONG debut from Snoop Dogg. This is yet another artist who had a sense of self from the very beginning. His rap style is incredibly smooth and a little more on the "chill" side. This is the kind of gangsta rap that has swagger. Furthermore, Snoop lacing his music with such a steady and heavy stream of funk sound turned out to be genius; it became a super distinguishing feature of his. This is another 90s rap album that also doesn't pay women much respect at all, but what else is new? This is as dated as much of the rest of the 90s hip-hop on this project, but there's something about Snoop Dogg's one of a kind style that keeps this sounding timeless.

Very fun, and interesting to see how it influenced hip hop.

Sure, the lyrics are misogynistic and dated, but still a solid album. I guess it's a 3/5, could have possibly been a 4/5 if we dropped all the cringy skits...

Here's what I find funny. The lyrics are just a juvenile and stupid as Eminem's but I enjoy this a significant amount more. Still not that much.

Noget af det bedste gamle hip hop. Beats alene gør det fornøjeligt.

Can really hear how influential this was, feels very similar to a lot of modern rap that I've listened to. Have always kind of known Snoop Dog as a bit of a meme, but this is great. Wouldn't come back to it, but worth a listen to expand the owld musical knowledge.

Well, this one’s a head-scratcher. The beats? Smooth as hell. G-funk in full cruise control. Hooks are sticky (surely like the Chronic), the mood's high, and it’s damn near impossible not to nod along. But then the lyrics come in and - ugh, yeah. Full-on time capsule energy, which is fine until it opens and punches you in the face with casual misogyny. It's like the vibe is rolling a blunt while the words are yelling at women from a car window. I get the cultural footprint, but it’s not one I want to keep stepping in. Struggling with a 3 here. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - Gin and Juice - Lodi Dodi - Who Am I?

3 out of 5. Another one that was more fun than I thought it'd be.

I preferred the rappers that weren't Snoop Dogg. It's funky. I probably will relisten to a couple songs, "Gin and Juice" was on rotation prior to listening to the whole album. Dislike all the skits and the misogyny is boring. We get it - you hate hoe's...

made me feel like a gangster

(Shh… I quite liked this one…)

Well, it's Snoop. His laid-back way of delivering his lyrics is his trademark, making his music so unique. Even if you're not into that kind of music, you'll like at least that. Then, the combination with Dr. Dre's G-Funk is a perfect fit. This sounds much less outdated - besides the shitty lyrics - than almost any other Rap/Hip Hop of that time, and thanks to this list, I heard quite a few of those.
